Welcome!
Hello I’m new
Hello everyone!
I have never played DnD but always been intrigued and would love to learn

D&D facilitates heroic fantasy, often in a medieval/Renaissance-era setting. Lots of folks see the system as flexible given all the hacks and homebrews, but making it fit a different context seems like a lot work compared with finding a more appropriate system.
any other new person wanna talk about characters and campaigns in PMs (message me)? if not all good, i just don't wanna flood a channel
I’m just wondering if it’s weird that my friends and I haven’t ever ran any campaigns with a single book..
is it bad that i only make D&D characters that are human and realistic?
Why?
Like why do you think it's bad?
D&D is a game - the point of a game is to have fun
ik but like one of my characters are just the guy form content warning 😭
and another is my bloody basterds characters (IOS game)
another one is a Ready or Not swat officer
You can get and use character inspiration from all sorts of places/media. As long as it fits your group's D&D game and is fun for you to play, then it doesn't really matter what strangers on the internet think 😉
also where would the best place to get a game because i really want to play but never got the chance to

newbie rule question
does it matter in wording for action/bonus action? Like if I cast a cantrip and a spell does the cantrip have to be the bonus action and or can it be the action and the spell be the bonus if that makes sense?
They're not interchangeable. Bonus Actions are Bonus Actions, you can't turn them into actions.
(yes, the term 'bonus' can be a little odd)
okay so then I guess my question is does it matter if I use the bonus action first, like using Vicious Mockery and the say Silence would I say " I use my bonus action to us VM and then my action to cast Silence"
cause I can cast a cantrip as a bonus as a bard right?
Well, is something letting you use Vicious Mockery as a bonus action?
What would be letting you cast Vicious Mockery as a Bonus Action instead of as an Action?
thats where I am getting confused I guess, from Roll20 "A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action"
A feature can only be used as a bonus action if it specifcially states it is a bonus action to do.
That's if that spell can be cast as such, like a Shillelagh, Compelled Duel, or Healing Word, which have casting times of 1 Bonus Action.
A spell's casting time is detailed in the spell's description / meta information, alongside its range, school of magic, and name.
oh okay. there it is, it will literally say bonus action vs action. The wording on Roll20 made it seems like the bonus/1 action were interchangeable if it was a cantrip or am I just dumb and reading that wrong?
They are not interchangeable (but yes wording can be confusing)
They're not (interchangeable), and that rule is specifically on casting multiple spells - If you cast a bonus action spell, the only other kind of spell you can cast on the same turn would be cantrips costing 1 action
it should read A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of BONUS action"
No, that's not what the rule is for
That's if you cast a spell as a bonus action, like Healing Word
then you can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action.
So you can't, say, Healing Word, and then do a Flame Strike spell, for example.
But you could do Healing Word (Bonus Action) and Sacred Flame (Cantrip, 1 Action).
If it were this way, you'd have no bonus action left to spend on that 'another spell'
ok, so I could do a Bardic Inspiration (bonus) and then Vicious as the action
Easily, freely
But not the other way around, for example.
Also bardic inspiration isn't a spell, so it wouldn't cause that rule to matter on your turn, so you could still cast a bigger spell, like a Hypnotic Pattern, as your Action.
ok ok starting to click, as of now my bonus is limited due to my build and level. There will be spells (depending) later that can be used as bonus but they will say bonus so I will know the difference
I am just asking some dumb newbie questions so perfect timing
Yep. The rule you were talking about is specifically for casting multiple spells on your turn and one being a Bonus Action.
There's an alternative, the new 2024 rules, which is as simple as
You're only allowed to cast a spell using a spell slot, once on your turn. (but casts that don't spend slots, such as a free cast from a Species, a Class Feature, or a Feat you picked, are fair game to "stack" cast, provided you have the Action / Bonus Action to do so!)
I was asking on the difference on bonus vs action and cantrip, I thought I could use any cantrip as a bonus action
No, all spells will detail their casting time.
On DNDBeyond, there are two cantrips that are bonus actions, from 2014 version, Shillelagh and Magic Stone.
Basically, all other cantrips are going to be actions, except for stuff like Mending that specifically takes a minute
I got hung up on the wording from Roll20 thinking I could do both a action and a ccantrip as my bonus"A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action"
That's specifically a rule for Bonus Action Spells, making it so you can't also cast a Fireball on the same turn, for example.
mods?
No, no. It can happen any time on your turn, as long as something allows you to take it. And sometimes some bonus actions will be "immediately after" or "as part of"
And homebrew is a whole can of worms that basically tips the game on its head - as a Newcomer, sticking to the base rules as printed is advisable, so you know what everyone is working off of first before any weird unique things.
But-
That limits you from casting whatever spell as a bonus action, whatever level it is
even if you're a sorcerer who used a class feature to make it a bonus action that one time
And then going and casting a fireball or hypnotic pattern on the same turn, because those example spells are not cantrips.
It also prevents you from casting a bonus action spell, and then counterspelling someone trying to counterspell your spell. (as Counterspell is a spell which is a Reaction casting time, specifically to interrupt and stop a spell from happening)
Does anyone know about a VTT app that is mobile phone friendly? Roll 20 is not doing it for me
Owlbear Rodeo might do the trick. Provided the DM doesn't load it full of CPU intensive extensions...
I don't know of any that are great, tbh.
Owlbear Rodeo may just win for being the simplest
appreciate all the help, the wording on that AND my session last night got me confused
How do i begin a game?
Remember:
If in doubt, it's as simple as it says it is.
And then think about the specific context. For example, the bonus action spell rule is for casting multiple spells, the timings of each, and the limits imposed by casting one with the Bonus Action specifically.

I cast True Strike and then the DM was asking what I wanted to do with my bonus action and I thought I was missing something, she was just looking for my attack I guess. Then a message from a fellow player gently reminding me Vicious Mockery was my best cantrip and the wording from a quick google search from Roll20 got me all twisted lol
The DM was probably just asking if you had a bonus action you wanted to use
I'll often do a quick "action, bonus action, move" check before going to the next person
There's also the new true strike from the 2024 version of the game which is now its own thing with an actual use-case
it seemed like a decent choice but I'm starting to think my first sheet isn't going well 😅
yeah so you don't have to scroll I got hung up on this tiny blip from a google search and my DM asking that question I thought I could use cantrips as a bonus action but I get it now
"A spell cast with a bonus action is especially swift. You must use a bonus action on your turn to cast the spell, provided that you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn. You can't cast another spell during the same turn, except for a cantrip with a casting time of 1 action
but I got it now
it will tell me
yeah, roll20 is kinda naff for formatting. The context of that rule is effectively for casting multiple spells on your turn.
If you only cast 1 spell on your turn, you can completely ignore it, it's not relevant if you're only casting 1 spell on a turn.
Thats why I come here, far less shameful than on the table. Thanks again! now if I had questions about a specific item that would be the lore chat?
well, what kind? Rules are #dnd-rules , dnd lore is #dnd-lore
But this is still a good chat to use for teaching the basics
I think this one would be a DM question actually as I type it out, it would fall into the homebrew or an experience vs some black and white answer. I got a ghost lamp last night and just curious on the lore besides the couple sentences that describe what it does
The narrative of how the thing works is up to the DM. I meant more for stuff like, how does X work (simply), how do magic items in general work, and so on.
yeah, I figured as soon as I started typing it out. Well again super helpful, I only embarrassed myself like 10% which is workable lol
Yeah sure!!! I get home from work at about 1 (in around 3.5/4 hours) if you’re free around then! Sorry for such a late response. It’s been a crazy busy day and a crazy long shift lol

Hi! I’m new to D&D. It’s nice to meet yall.
helo
Hey, if anyone has Xbox and wants to talk about a potential campaign, message my account “Army xDestroyer” and meet your potential party members, all current potential players are in NA timezones we are newcomer friendly and are more than willing to be patient with you. We also have 2 veteran dnd players so we are confident that your experience can be comfortable
Hello people :D I've been a casual DND player for about a year, but recently my DM had to quit and I'm looking to become the replacement DM for my group, in time... so I'm here to learn and get some practice under my belt. I'm hoping to meet some other novice players interested in doing some text based rp to help me flesh out my homebrew campaign. I'm also down to just chat dnd things or help people brainstorm for their own campaigns. I'm just real excited about the universe and telling stories so feel free to message me if you want to chat ^_^
hello there people, never actually played DND but always been wanting to. Just don't actually know anyone who does so I am mostly here to learn and maybe get to join people for experience.
Any one up for a game of dnd
Have you tried checking #looking-for-players ?
So the way that works is you look at the various posts there to see if there's something that matches your availability, check the thread to make sure the DM hasn't posted something like "applications closed", and follow the instructions (if any) to make your interest known in that thread.
Hi all, i joined this server a week or so ago because although i never played DnD, I've been very intrigued by it from watching some youtube groups, and playing some DnD inspired games. Hoping to finally experience it for myself via this server
As Mr. Smith said, Try checking Looking For Players
ok thanks for the heads up!
Good luck, hope you manage to find a game, Dont give up even if it takes a while :)
Here's iamrazorwing's guide to finding a game: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view?usp=drivesdk
im browsing the channel right now and schedule is more or less the hardest part seems like most posts there are people living on the other side of the world lol
Ahhh Guessing you're from Oceania?
somewhere in SEA actually
SEA? meaning like Phillipines and Indonesia?
ahh yea that sucks, I'm in New Zealand and if it werent for the fact I have nothing going on atm I wouldnt be able to play much if any dnd
hopefully I do find some DM thats ok with a newcomer and has a schedule that somewhat matches mine
oh do you have any tips like things to prepare for someone who's essentially never played DnD?
There's the Free Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules) and in the post below, the Handbooker Helper videos.

thank you so much, and apologies if this is supposed to be something that could have easily been found withing the server already
Personally I would suggest two specific things. Get on Google or the search engine of your choice and look for
- dnd actions cheat sheet
And - dnd character sheet explained
sure will do! thanks again
Are all the artificer cantrips available at lvl 3?
Per the class table: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/252717-artificer artificers get cantrips starting at level 1.
Yes but I'm making if it's all cantrips
You can pick from all the cantrips an artificer has access to starting at level 1 is what I'm saying.
You only get to pick a couple but as you level up you can get more.
I'm new so I'm gonna ask this question:
Does being an artificer require materials to make stuff?
Yes - the artificer class is not part of the free basic rules.
You would need to own the book or be in a campaign with content sharing enabled and someone in that group would need to have the book with that class in it.
Ohhh thnx
I understood that. I wanted to know if all are available to pic k from.
Thank you
So then yes, starting at level 1 you can pick two cantrips from the list of all cantrips artificers have access to.
as someone who usually gets home from work after 8 is there really any groups that dnd that late into the night
Yes. The hobby is global. Your evening is someone else's morning.
Timezones make this easy
Look for availability, not matching time zones is my recommendation
yeah but im saying the existence of different timezones make finding ppl available at any given time easier, i shouldve been more clear
Hey just wondering how do battle maps work with combat as I'm looking to dm with a group of friends so am just curious to learn the basics
generally, if you're using a grid, each square is 5 feet
maps/grids are important so that everyone knows where everything else is
Ah ok thanks
I’m new to dnd
Haven’t played a game before yet
I’d like to try because it seems super fun
Welcome to D&D, wheather it's the roleplay-combat, or just rolling the shiny rocks, always a good time
To match with my friend group
Oh ok
Sorry
I know that there’s like a set amount of stats you have and you can change them
There’s a character sheet
There’s like dice rolls for your actions
I played fallout I imagine it’s like SPECIAL
These are true things
I know there’s classes but I’m not certain what they do
I also know about the races
I recommend checking out the free basic rules to start

hello!
i’m currently building my first character, and for the faith option do i put the religion or deity that i want to follow?
Either honestly, but I would discuss that more with your DM as they may have different pantheons than what you want.
ok, so basically its safe to leave it blank for now?
It's safe to leave blank
Thanks!
No but you shouldn't post your age in this server, it's against the rules
Certain tables may have age restrictions, but they'll usually say outright if they allow players <18
Ok
If you wanted to find a game with your peers, perhaps check to see if your school, library, or local game store has a D&D club
Otherwise online is a great option
Thanks so much
What’s a good starting character type
Like race and class
I like Goliath but the CON seems complicated
Pick whatever interests you! There no right or wrong answer.
Are you referring to Stone's Endurance?
If your Constitution modifier is +2, for example, Stone's Endurance simply lets you reduce the damage you take by 1d12+2.
my friend told me monk is a good character if you are new cause its not a complicated class
Some classes are indeed simpler than others.
But none of it is unknowable. If a more complex class is what sparks your interest, I say go for it.
What would the best class be to start with as a new player ?
What kind of class do you want to play?
Not sure yet I was looking at a fighter or trying to find a class that will benefit people I play with
Yes
Fighter's a good choice if you want to keep things simple.
And they've got a lot of pretty flexible build options.
So if you wanted one that could lend your teammates a helping hand (mostly in battle), it's doable.
I googled best classes for Goliath and it said monk is a good one so maybe I should make a Goliath monk
But if you wanted to focus primarily on playing a support role, a spellcaster class like Bard might be a better fit.
Thank you that helps a lot I’ll play around with a bard and a fighter to see which one I perfer
Bard does have a lot more complexity than Fighter, though.
If you wanted something in the middle, then maybe a Paladin or Cleric could suit your taste.
So I’m having a bit of trouble figuring this out and maybe I’m missing something in my reading. But what’s the difference between a sorcerer and a wizard?
there are quite a few differences even though they both are spell casters that use a similar pool of spells
thematically wizards study and learn a 'science' of magic, while sorcerers are born with innate magical affinity for spellcasting
wizards main stat is intelligence... sorcerers main stat is cha
wizards tend to have a wider selection of spells and can learn more spells to pick from to memorize each day... sorcerers have fewer spells they know, but can cast them more often
Narratively, wizards study magic, while sorcerers simply are magic.
TL:DR
Wizards cast spells from books.
Sorcerers cast spells from innate awesomeness
Wizards have access to the largest selection of spells in the game, so they're great for flexibility in planning ahead.
sorcerers also have a few ways they can 'alter' spells as they are casting them. making them faster, bigger, more selective in targetting...
Sorcerers can customize the spells they cast in ways that others cant, so they're great for tailoring their spells in the moment.
So it makes more sense for my character to accidentally become a sorcerer cause I guess you can’t accidentally learn magic
You can change the narrative without changing the mechanics.
Something commonly referred to as "reflavoring".
definitely... sorcerers are often just 'born' the way they are, because of a magical being in their lineage. their powers may manifest at some point... like mutants in marvel
But yeah, a character who gains accidental control over magic better fits the default narrative of a sorcerer.
For instance, you could play a wild magic sorcerer, which can cause all sorts of unpredictable side effects when you use your spells.
That could be a good fit for a character who's been accidentally given this power and, as a result, has little control over it.
That would work out cause she’s a teen who has no intention of dealing with magic and now she has she’s mad about it but is still trying
Just gotta decide on spells now
whats CR?
challenge rating
how does it work
so a challenge rating helps to determine how difficult a fight is for your DM
also if you are druid, what you can wild shape into depends on CR also
Hi
Every time we enter this magic shop in my campaign my DM makes it a big deal to emphasize that everything is purple on the inside does this have any significance or should i be asking a specific question? my group is confused about why he emphasizes so much on the purple just didn’t know if we should know something without asking him
I'm unaware of a D&D narrative that 'purple inside' would indicate. It sounds like something personal to him or his campaign to me
Are you playing Waterdeep Dragonheist?
This is just part of the story. Not something we can answer for you here
well I havn't read that source.. laugh. hopefully it gets clearer over time
should i be asking any questions or it’ll unravel itself?
Role play it however you see fit
so it's not personal to him if he's running a module.. it's personal to whoever wrote the module... heh
It’s sort of Taboo for us to give you any hints or answer questions about the plot or events or worldbuilding of a published adventure
wait... Colossus's name is purple too? coincidence?! yeah prolly....
I just found out about alignment, how does that work?
Alignments are explained in step 4 of the character creation process in the 2024 rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2024/creating-a-character#Step4ChooseanAlignment
It helps with roleplay, not too important otherwise
The purpose of an alignment is to give you a baseline understanding of your own character's personality and internal feelings, to help you role play as them
Here's the free version of rules linked above:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#Step4ChooseanAlignment
Whoops. I didn't realize the PHB had been content-shared with me, so I thought I was using the free rules 🙃
Are there any like zombie clown campaigns?
I'll be honest: I don't think I've ever heard of a zombie clown campaign.
bummer
I don't believe "zombie clowns" are a theme in any of the prewritten published adventures, but many DMs like to create their own story instead of running one of the official ones. Their themes and plots are as varied as the human imagination
There are space clowns, though. 👀
I’m gonna play dnd for the first time on Friday (I’ve never played before at all) wtf do I do
Step 1. Read the rules
Step 2. Make a character
Step 3. Roll some dice, act in character, and have fun
rules 😓 I thought you can do anything in dnd
Yes and no
How does character creation work also bc like for example if I wanna take every animal I see ever how would I do such
The rules help give structure to the story and keep everyone on the same page as to how things work within the game.
But where the story goes is all up to your group.
D&D is very much a rules driven game. You can narrate and improvise things to some extent, but generally speaking, and especially when in combat, your powers and abilities are based off what you chose during character creation, which is a structured process with set options
What do you mean by "take" them?
Tame* auto correct
I’m new as well lol it’s a tough start until you get comfortable talking
uh oh I hate talking to people (idk any of the people I’m doing it with I’m joining a club at school)
is anyone hosting a campaign
yeah how does this work

Ooo that looks tight
How would I tame animals
There are no rules for that, so you'd have to ask the DM.
If I wanna tame a bunch of animals what should I do in character building stuff
😓
Can I be silly goofy in this game or will I get yelled at and lose
It's a matter of the table culture. Some folks tend to be more grounded and serious; others are fine with constant antics.
What would you assume a high school club to be more like
Taming animals is not something covered by the rules. It is not an intended game mechanic. There is a ranger subclass called the Beast Master, which lets you have 1 specific animal, or various different animal spirits depending on which version you are using, but even the Beast Master cannot just go out into the wild and tame an animal they find. The beast companion is granted to you as part of the character creation process
I suspect it'll be pretty silly, especially if everyone's new and there's no trust to be vulnerable and earnest.
The best person to ask about this is the club itself!
So I can’t go up to a dragon and tame it instead of fighting
You cannot
I’m going on Friday
😓
What can i do then
dragons are intelligent creatures. They can talk and think for themselves.
I wanted to make dinosaur and dragon friends
Read up on the rules, then go talk to the club about what kind of games they run
You have to read the rules then choose specific abilities during chaacter creation
Are the rules consistent or does it depend on who I’m playing with
They're consistent.
There is a rulebook
How do I find rules and how long would it take to read the rules and how much of reading it is needed
The rules are consistent for the most part but not consistently enforced.

D&D just got a big update to its rules, but not everyone has switch to the new version yet. You'll have to ask your club which version they are using
Old rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
New rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
is there any monster that like clones a PC and then the PC is fighting themselves?
Dopplegangers can disguise themselves as a PC, but they won't gain the same abilities and powers that the PCs have
darn thats what i was looking for, same stats
That generally won't exist in D&D
ok, i thought something existed like it in BG3 during the shar gauntlet but wasnt sure if it was real or not. also if anyone has seen the show frieren and remembers the golemns in the labyrinths thats pretty much what im getting at
I understand what you are referring to, but that is not a creature in the normal rules of 5e.
Players and Monsters are balanced very differently. Players have low HP, but deal high amounts of damage, and have extremely powerful battlefield control abilities. Monsters have high HP, but deal considerably lower amounts of damage, and have more mild battlefield control abilities. If a player was to fight something with the stats of a player, it would not be a balanced fight at all, because it would only take 1-2 hits to kill either side
hmm thank you this info is very helpful
Do I have to make my character equipment stats and backstory before a session or when it starts?
That's ultimately a question you should ask your group.
If you don't have a group yet, I'd recommend coming up with a few loose ideas for characters you might enjoy.
Then when the time comes, you can work with your group to pick the best fit and add any finishing details.
Alr
Will this game help me make friends
Hello all, may I know usually how will dms prepare their battles map? Will they make their own or is there any share resources for different situations? Thanks
How can I be extra silly goofy
Like class wise what’s the most silly goofy I can do, what gives me the most freedom to be silly goofy and not do things the way it’s intended
It really depends on preference and how the group is playing. Some people draw their own or make them with map software, some people use the ones given if they're running a published adventure, some people scour the internet for stuff that's close enough
Hello. I am new and only learning about the game for now, what's up with the new rules? will everyone switch to the new version or not?
I would think some people may, or may not. Perhaps games would be formatted such as (D&D 5e or D&D 2024) to know the variation
Hello! I am new to D&D and got interested due to Baldurs Gate 3. I understand that the game is not completely accurate to the real thing, but I would be interested to learn!
can someone help me make a Satyr Bard?
I haven't played D&D in a whole year and tbh completly forgot how to do everything.
Hi everyone! I'm new to D&D and am interested in playing in a campaign. I became interested through campaign videos I saw on YouTube as well as Baldur's Gate 3. Nice to meet you all!
Hello. Can I join a campaign. I'm newbie, zero experience. I just created a character: Human Fighter 1.
Hey guys, I am new too but didn't want to leave you hanging too long, a bot should drop a starter link here soon or you can scroll up. #find-a-game is a great place to start, there are also some paid sites I know of. I went that way as I wanted something quick and accountable but there are a lot of great resources on here. I started with videos and BG3 as well and I am on my 3rd session and man am I glad I made the jump
You might try over on #character-discussion they can def point you in the right direction
i did try that. i was ignored :/
I'm sorry to hear that, what were you looking for?
help making a satyr bard lol
a Satyr Bard, sounds fun. I am playing a bard right now
im so used to using the same build over and over again. either monk -> drunken master or dwarf barbarian
sooo im trying something new for coming back to the game.
Do we make our characters on dnd beyond ?
i tried that but i need to pay for a satyr lol
O
def, and if they don't have all the content that you want don't worry. I find once you hook up with a DM they share all their material so you can pick more stuff
Ooo cool

I would read through the class descriptions and see if anything jumps out at you as soundling like a particularly interesting base for your character. Once you know what class you want to play it should let you know in its description what priority you should generally have for stat allocation
Thanks! i heard that the grung might be bad at later levels and can make some problems cause of the saves. is there another like uhhh good fighting race
If you feel like playing as a lil frog dude, I cannot encourage you enough to just go with your heart, regardless of if one of your racial traits doesn't scale particularly well
If you want to go with another race, any race will do. You cant really go wrong with choosing your race, since racial traits usually aren't that impactful on the capabilites of your overall character, that usually always stems from your class
Huh alr thanks!
Hiya :] I'm planning on making a dragonborn bard build and I'd definitely like some roleplaying tips for this whimsical man! Because I've read that dragonborns are kinda gruff/stern but idk
Dragonborn, as with any race are of free will and can come in a wide variety of personalities. Dont feel like you need to adhere perfectly to the race description if it doesn't fit your concept.
As for roleplaying tips, I would consider researching the type of dragon your dragonborn resembles (red, green, gold, amethyst, etc.) and perhaps steal a personality trait or two from that type of dragon
Thanks!
I have an idea that might be absolutely broken if possible
Yo wassup

Hey guys, my best friend and I wanted to try playing DnD and were wondering how difficult it is to find a DM? I'm not ready to ask just yet, but wondering if i should even bother and start thinking of someone else.
looking at the chats in looking for a player, looks like none of the threads are answered much less anyone for a DM
if you aren't having luck here there are some pay sites, I went that route as I wanted to start right away and the accountability of it, plus with two of you I bet you could fit into any pre-exsisting group that is down a few players
they even have one shot adventures so you don't have to commit right away
Hey Dublin?
Whats up?
How get stats above 20?
oh yea! quick question whats a backround?
I think you can do it with a magical item but I am not entirely sure
like I am reading this "In the Dungeon Master's Guide, there are a handful of magic items that allow players to increase their Strength to a set value: Belt of X Giant Strength, which can also be combined with a Hammer of Thunderbolts, allowing strength score between 21 and 29. "
Your background is essentially where your character came from before they became an adventurer. Perhaps they served in a temple as an Acolyte of their faith, or perhaps they were a blacksmith (which would be covered by the Guild Artisan)
😮
Yeah, so Strength is the one stat that can get above 20 most easily with the various Belts of Giant Strength. The other stats are pretty much hard capped to 22 if you find the various magic tomes that each increase one stat each to 22
What about Boons?
do they change stats or just backstory
that I do not know
A background will give you two skill proficiencies and either;
- A tool proficiency and a language
- two tool proficiencies
Or - two languages
Additionally you get a background feature, that will give you an minor ability to do something specific to your background
Like Sage's Researcher
I dont see any Epic Boons in the 2014 rules that increase your ability scores
Lemme check rq
Boon of Undetectability but thats the only one I see
In answer to your actual question, they wont change your stats
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
👍🏻
Boon of Night Spirits, Boon of Combat Prowess, and Boon of Fate are the ones I can use on my D&D Beyond character
It's in a friends campaign and has access to a bunch of stuff from different books
Each gives a special ability and a +1 to a stat that can stack to 30
Ah, I'm afraid I can't say im too versed in the 2024 rules yet. But yeah those look like good choices if you want to bump up your ability scores
With the items you mention you might be able to get strength to 30
ALr last question i believe. how do i fill out the stats for my character. i was told that i get 8 in default. i have 27 extra points that i spread and 15 is the max.
Lemme try that rq actually, combine the items and the boons
They shouldn’t, as the belt’s description states that it doesn’t work if your score is already equal to the belt’s score or higher
However, 2024 epic boons are all restricted to level 19+ as far as I’m aware, unless your DM/friend has lifted that restriction
You'll want to refer to this table
Essentially yes, all your stats start at 8. You can spend those 27 points to increase the scores to those listed in the left column, by a point-cost equal to the number in the right column
So, if you want to give your character a 15 in a stat, you need to spend 9 of your 27 points
Note that going from 13 to 14, or 14 to 15 costs two points instead.
you're a lifesaver you know that. Also does (8 + your Constitution modifier) mean i just add 8 to my constitution ?
so like 8+5 and then +4?
to get to 15
Nah, that 8 + Con is likely in reference to your hit points. That means that your hit points are equal to 8 + Con modifier
ohh ok so do classes give stat buffs. Or is it just some of them
Mostly races
Increases to your ability scores will also come from Feats and Ability Score Improvements. You'll get your first one at level 4
Classes and backgrounds affect your skills which give you modifiers on certain rolls
Different dices do different things. In general the d20 is the most common die, used to make skill checks, saving throws, and attack rolls. The rest are usually used for calculating damage. I would check out #learn-to-play as well as this channel’s pins which have a link to the free basic rules which have more info on which die are used and when
Thank you very much
nice
Yep!
are you using the 2014 or 2024 revised rules?
Where are you reading the rules?
im not lol
Oh hahah yeah probably want to read through the rules as you go, they're set out in a step by step process that you should be able to follow as you go
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
They're also ✨ free✨

👍🏻
oh yea is there any point in invested in strength of i can just use dexterity
I got the 2014 version right now because I signed up for DnD beyond
If your a class like a fighter paladin or barbarian it would be better to put points into strength
Even I don’t have the revised version
The 2014 one is probably better for new players
im going for monk grung. I already have the perception and maxed out dex and con. And now im thinking whether i should put more into strength or wisdom
Heya I’m new here and very excited to learn all about d&d seems really fun!

Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Wisdom definitely
Perception is more important than strength
But strength is pretty important for monks since they add it to unarmed strikes
hmmm alr. Wait why is wisdom more important? is'nt grappling like op for grung
should i do strength and then later in uhh any campaign i add to wisdom
Wisdom for perception
Yes
alr 13 speed for grappling. I choose atrhletics and stealth as my skills
should i change to acrobatics
ooh thanks. what do i put fot features and traits?
Your like monk features that give you certain abilities
And racial traits like the Goliath has a feature that lets the acclimate to different climates
Stuff like that
wait wait what abilities do monks get
You can check in the handbook
Read through the monk section in the basic rules to find out

wait for saving throws do i mark the proficiency that the monk gives
Are you playing as just a monk or multiclassing?
multi classing maybe into fighter
im just filling out my sheet rn
You only gain saving throw proficiencies from your starting class. Multiclassing does not give you more
alr so i just darken strengthand dex
A monk’s saving throw proficiencies are Strength and Dex not wisdom and Dex
yea mb i just saw
Hit Points at 1st Level: 8 + your Constitution modifier wait what does this mean
Greetings. I am not new to DnD, but I cut my teeth on the original boxed sets and Advanced D&D, did a smattering of 3.5, so I am effectively new to the 5e rules, but not the concepts
What is your Constitution score, if you have it yet?
+3
wait wait
wait 16
The +3 would be your constitution modifier.
So you have a modifier of +3
So 8 + your constitution modifier = 8 + 3 = 11
ooooh
Right
Welcome! I always enjoy it when a D&D veteran gets back into it and tries 5e for the first time. It’s quite enjoyable to hear their opinions and discuss how the game has changed over time. You’re hopping in at just the right time, as the 2024 rules revisions have just come out, so you can learn the new update with all of us
Fair enough. Not everyone is jumping to the new version right away, so no harm in learning the 2014 version first
@fallen surge I do NOT like the multiclass rules. They make it painful to be multiclass
Yes, that’s kinda the point. Multiclassing is a high risk, high reward option, that should generally be avoided unless you’re going for a very specific build or synergy. You can’t/shouldn’t take a level in cleric just because your rogue worships a god, for example
@fallen surge Agreed, and there is enough variation in the character classes and subclasses to meet almost any idea, with a little wiggling. I just used to have a thing for fighter/thieves. I really loved the swashbuckler subclass from AD&D, but I am finding ways to get there through other means
I don’t know anything about the AD&D version, but Swashbuckler is a rogue subclass in 5e as well. It was published in the supplemental book Xanathar’s Guide to Everything
@fallen surge I haven't gotten out of the books mentioned above yet. It is probably quite similar. AD&D was more numbers-heavy, including tables for how specific armors fared against specific weapons, they worked around the idea of a "thAC0" with the base AC being ten and then going down(!). It was cool once you got used to it, but a lot of that was still leftover from the miniature games. There is a better word for the latter, but it escapes me. Armies of miniatures battling armies of miniatures.
I believe the term you are looking for is War games. And I’m familiar with the concept of thAC0, mostly through memes and references. One of the more recent published adventures Wild Beyond the Witchlight has a character named Thaco the Clown
@fallen surge LOL
But, we should probably keep this discussion on the topic of 5e
yo what are feats and how do i get them
@fallen surge Probably. I do like the finesse rules. They really help a thief (or any non-warrior character) when it comes to not completely sucking in combat
Feats are an small powers or abilities you can choose to gain at certain levels when you level up, instead of increasing your stats
alr thanks
So, small terminology thing. In 5e, “thief” is the name of 1 specific subclass for the rogue class. It may confuse people when you talk about a thief character to mean anyone particularly dexterous or stealthy
what other stuff do i put in my features and traits other than racial traits
do i add the buffs it gives
Whatever you gain from your class and subclass if you have one at your level
im just making one for future campaigns
@fallen surge You are correct and I am falling back into terms that I have known for decades. My apologies.
Similarly, “Warrior” is not a term at all in 5e
Right. I did nto want to use the term "Fighter" because of what it excludes
I’m not actually sure what category or group of classes that is supposed to refer to. You could say “martial classes” but rogue is a martial class
Barbarians, Rangers, Paladins, Fighters, and possibly Monks
Why would rogue be excluded from that group? What meaningful distinction is made there?
I would rarely consider a Rogue to be a front-line combatant
Ah. Melee vs ranged. There are melee rogue builds, but they are much less common. That is what the swashbuckler subclass specializes in. It’s a rogue subclass that gives them better melee capabilities
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!

I do agree that the swashbuckler is usually a better fighter than a regular thief. The Arcane Trickster just isn't something I want to get involved in at the moment. I have enough to learn about the game without getting bogged down in the spells, too.
I often made my Rangers and Fighters ranged instead of melee in 2e
And you can actually go either way in 5e
Ranged monks are a little harder unless you're a Kensai
But it never hurts to get used to the game before you worry about spells
That is the general advice we give to most newcomers, yeah. No class is so complex that you can’t learn it as a beginner, but the less magic you have, the simpler it will be to learn.
@main fulcrum I rarely ran Rangers. Not because I didn't like them, it just didn't work out that way, but they can be good ranged attackers, along with fighters.
can someone give an example on using countercharm?
As a sorcerer who needs to rest to replenish his expended spell slots how does that work? I’m so used to BDG3 where I rest when ever my slots are at the bare minimum but how would that work in a campaign how often does one rest
I'm still new but we have rested pretty often in my campaign
Iv only ever used it on BDG3 and it has to be a casted a higher level then the spell being countered or else it won’t work
like at the end of each session so far and we have had 3
but you could be midfight or about to fight when a session ends so I guess we have been "lucky", also a beginner game so there is that
Three rests? Out of the whole campaign?
It really depends on the game
So, you can only long rest once per 24 hour period. Long resting means going to bed for the day and sleeping 8 hours. The game world doesn’t pause for you like it does in BG3, so you can only long rest when it makes sense and is safe to do so. We can’t really answer “how often” that will be because it’s highly dependent on the group you are playing with and the story of your game
You might have sections where you're resting multiple times in a session and sections where you can't rest for sessions at a time
i don't think you need to sleep for 8 hours, you only need 6, you've got 2 hours of light activity
Technically correct, yes
Unless my party is traveling, they don't usually get more than 1 in a session
and some species only need 4
Also known as, don't spend all your spells in the first fight 😁
Interesting. And resting is the only way for a sorcerer to replenish his spell slot so my next question would be, how often do you get into combat in 1 session
Also depends. I've had sessions that are all combat and sessions that are none
Fully noted 😅
depends on who you pick a fight with lol
it comes up fairly often because of ppl taking watch and like if you get woken up early or w/e
Usually at least a couple in my experience
The better question is “how many combats do you get in per adventuring day” because 1 day does not always mean 1 session.
As a level 1 sorcerer with almost no slots how would y’all recommend to go about a fight? Let the party handle it and just you Cantrips to support
yeah we had a session with a ship battle (whole other thing) a session of market and plot and then a two battle mystery session so I guess it really depends
Ahhhhh true true true, I haven’t played my first game yet but I’m excited and super curious. Session 0 starts Tuesday 😭
as a bard thats what I had to do, I'm also on crowd control until higher level is what I am finding
Cantrips are definitely going to be your primary tool for the first few levels
I’m so glad I asked in the chat all the feed back is top tier ✅
Also depends. Sometimes that one spell (or two) is enough to turn the tide, but you are then limited. A Wizard has to use his resources carefully in gameplay. They can be the most powerful, but if they are drained, they would be in desperate need of assistance.
Idk if I’d say “desperate need of assistance” is quite accurate. Cantrips are weaker than weapon attacks on average, but for play at level 1 and 2, they are still comparable
Fair enough
is this server heavy pay to play?
no, theres a section for paid games though in the looking for play channels and stuff
i want to join a weekly game or even daily lol i just really wantt o play
I'm pretty new and will be running the starter set for completely new players. why does the adventure have a DC 10 perception check when all the pre-mades have passive perception >10. Am I missing something? maybe i don't understand passive checks?
@wooden forge Online or in-person?
Online
#find-a-game is this sever's place to look for games
Otherwise, Roll20 has a game-finder. There are also several facebook pages and subreddits for LFG (Looking FOr Groups)
Ok
Its considered polite to give the Basic Rules a read through and give Character Creation a go before joining a table though, if you like
Hello im new to dnd , i recently went to a place where there is a dm that hosts a game and helps people to learn, i created my character ( a dragon born cleric) and played a one shot and im interested to continue learning and finding groups to play online
Passive perception is, as you said, a passive check versus an active one. They’re usually used when there’s little to no pressure on the players to perform a task carefully and/or quickly. For example, you’d use passive perception to notice a trap door while taking a few minutes to rummage through a room, or while taking an hour to search every ship at a dock for a certain flag.
Regular checks are made when a task needs to be done under some sort of pressure, usually time. Perhaps a task can only be done once, needs to be done quietly, in a few seconds, requires adept attention, etc. An active perception check may be used to notice something quickly, notice something that’s hard to see, etc. If I had to guess, those DC10’s are being made under some kind pressure
oh okay. in this case they're walking up on a pool and make the check so in some sense its time constrained
what does a druid do ?
Hello everyone
Druids are powerful spellcasters who draw on the magic of nature and the elements to cast thematic spells.
They also can wildshape into animal forms
how do I make a character
Pick a class, pick a species, pick a background, and assign your ability scores. Here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character#CreateYourCharacter
what level?
Just for practice? Start at level 1. Once you get the ideas of what things go where, try a level 4. But any game you want to join will have their own requirements.
so ill need to make a new character per game
That's generally the case (with the exception of Adventurers League play) as each DM will have their own requirements for their own games. That said, you can certainly re-use an idea for a character, just bear in mind the history of their previous play might not fit the continuity of a new game.
Heyja! I dmed for the first time and we used printed out character sheets from DnD Beyond. But they were kinda complicated
Are there better and simpler sheets for first time pnp/dnd players?
Aso how do DM's keep track of the hp and innative of same looking monsters?
I had 8 Wolves in a combat encounter and quickly got lost.
I don't think my players noticed but I just guessed which enemy got attacked or whose turn it is
You can use whatever you want as far as character sheets - all a character sheet needs to do is present the needed info to mechanically run a character in a game. Could write it all out on a postcard if you wanted to.
As far as initiative tracking - can use a sheet of paper and list each creature/character and their initiative role and then re-list them in order.
For this, I’d label each wolf (wolf 1, wolf 2, etc) and track health like that.
^ Yeah that's a good idea.
You can also list that on your initiative tracking sheet as well - e.g. list each creature, their AC, and HP in order of their initiative
This!!! My biggest tip for new DMs is to consolidate paper space.
I gave them all numbers on paper and also the inniative but on the battlemap itself I got lost
The figures all looked the same
They had all the same AC and HP so I just wrote a little note above the innative order
hey im new to d&d what build should i use for a draconic
Draconic what? And #character-discussion would be a better place for character concepts
If you really want to start at the beginning, try Peril in Pinebrook, it's a free adventure that's basically a tutorial.
We started with wolves of welton! But I'll look that one up. Thank you
are they by chance any new dms willing to let me in on a session 🤔
Check #find-a-game for help finding a group to play with!
what dnd books should i get? there’s so many and idk if they’re all worth it
Have you played yet? You can rely on the free rules before dropping money so you can be sure you like the hobby before you invest in it.
i have not played yet, i was considering buying some basic books bc i know the dnd beyond website doenst have everything, like it only has core core stuff
thank you though!
The Player's Handbook is the core book of the game, so that would be the first purchase if/when you do decide to buy anything. Beyond that would depend on what additional content you want (specific subclasses, rules, etc.).
Basic books came be very expensive for some people, you can play dnd for free 🤷♂️
I just want to know I just rolled 14, 13, 11, 22, 15, 16. Are they good or idk? It's for my character sheet
If you're rolling but don't have a DM to witness the rolls, they're invalid, but it's fine for practice. It is impossible to roll a 22, though.
#dm-discussion is maybe the better channel.
I don’t know if should use that one or this one thanks
Oh yeah it's just practice, I'm currently playing around to see what works best for me and character making
Thanks!!
Those are good stats, but a 22 is impossible. The highest you could get with a roll is 18.
Ohhh
Yeah I realized I made a mistake on it, so I'll put my min 8 and max 18
If you are rolling 4d6 drop the lowest min is 3 max is 18
Ohh so it's ok to roll 4d6?
Ohhh
Is there a website for online dnd groups?
In what sense?
You roll 2,3,4,5 you drop the 2 and your score is 12
Depends

Ok, I got a little lost tbh
You take out two of the dice or??
In the looking for players channel, do I like message the person asking for players?
Yep!
Thanks guys
Or you could post an ad in #looking-for-dm by following the instructions in #find-a-game.
Pretty much yeah and I recommend you be specific with what you want and if you are new and all
Roll 4 d6 and out of the 4 results you discard the lowest dice roll
It's that simple? Then it's not as hard as I thought tbh
heyo guys im new in D&D, I don't understand a LOT of stuff, and i also need help understanding the "character sheet"
could someone help me build my character later? Ill ping when I'm online to create i if you want to help.
Okay this might sound dumb but I'm completely new to dnd. Is there like an official DnD company? Do they sell minis? I want to buy minis to build and paint for a tabletop but can't find anywhere to do so
i don't know much about it but i think you CAN like, make an 3D model and 3d print it..... but i think like Hasbro or whatever the company from d&d is sells pre-made character pieces
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.

if you have a 3d printer at your home,of course.....not everyone haves one of those (specifically being the expensive they are)
i have the D&D Beyond app eith the rulebook installed, could you help me make a character and understanding the sheet later? Because i am currently having classes now,and i can only try to make an character on my lunch break, because it's when i have the most time
I dont have a 3d printer
D&D is published by its parent company Wizards of the Coast, who themselves are owned by Hasbro. I’m not sure if WotC directly manufactures minis but they do license certain vendors to do it for them. You can probably look online for official minis products or check your local game store.
do you like, know a placd which haves public 3D printers?, you can also aswell just use like a small crumbled paper ball...
That's what my friends told me.
like me i would just like make some paper and then use it lol
Wizkids tend to make a lot of the adventure tie in minis
It’ll be best for you to read through the basic rules and fill out the character sheet as you go along. DDB’s character creator is a nice tool to aid with that but it can be confusing to new users (mostly the first page of the creator). If you come across any confusing points while going through feel free to ask them here though

im confused about the skill points thing, like wisdom, intelligence, charisma, etc. also about how the dice works with attack. Haven't gotten to that part yet on the manual but im just asking
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Making an attack starts with an attack roll to determine if the attack hits.
You roll a d20, add any applicable modifiers, then compare it to the target's Armor Class (AC).
D&D 5e is in the middle of a rules update so I’ll link you to the relevant section in both the 2014 and 2024 basic rules, which will answer your questions. Keep in mind the full 2024 free rules won’t be released for another 5 days so don’t worry if some content is missing from them for now:
By skill points I’m guessing you’re either asking about how to generate ability scores and/or what each one does. This will be covered by Chapter 1 and Chapter 7 of the 2014 Basic Rules. In the 2024 Free Rules it’ll be found in “The Six Abilities” and “Step 3: Determine Ability Scores” sections.
Making an attack typically involves making an attack roll, adding relevant modifiers, then applying damage if the attack hits. This is covered by Chapter 9 of the 2014 Basic Rules and the “Making an Attack” section of the 2024 Free Rules. Some spells require attack rolls or saving throws, which have special rules. More info about those can be found here for the 2014 Basic rules or here for the 2024 Free Rules
If your total equals or exceeds the target's AC, your attack hits. Anything lower is a miss.
The damage you roll for the attack will be specified by whatever attack you're using.
If you're attacking with a weapon, for example, you'd roll the weapon's damage dice (which will vary depending on the specific weapon).
Is the essentials kit worth picking up if I have a few starter sets?
If you want another good starter adventure, sure.
Hi. Any good videos on how to learn to play?
Also is there a pdf of the players handbook?
Can we make a character alone or do we have to be in a party first?
You can get free access to either the 2014 Basic Rules or the new Free Rules.
The Basic Rules is a little more complete at the moment (there's more content coming to the Free Rules next week and beyond).
But I think the Free Rules does a much better job of teaching the rules.
Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School are good resources on that score.
It usually helps to have a party first, but it's not necessarily required.
Thanks a lot!
What I'd recommend is to come up with a few loose ideas for characters. Then when you do find a party, you can work together to pick the best fit and add any finishing details.
Even if when I look for A DM who would accept me I kinda feel a little .. intimidated
Andnim supposed to be the adult
same i just joined today
Maybe I should just look for one locally...but I dunno
Yeah, finding a group can be a daunting task, no matter how long you've been playing. 😅
I am in Oklahoma till January or till my job move me somewhere else
You might try looking for what's known as a One Shot, where the game's entire story is told in a single session.
Those can be a good low-stakes way to get started.
If you've got $20 to spare, this month's Virtual D&D Weekend starts tomorrow. That's probably the quickest and easiest way to jump in.

its like the character stats or whatever idk the name, like his qualities...
i know absolutly nothing so im very scared of trying this game out
Yes, those would be the Ability Scores, which are described in Chapter 7 of the basic rules. Generating them is in chapter 1
but if theres this big of a community its gotta be a good game
oh
Yeah, Strength/Dexterity/Constitution/Intelligence/Wisdom/Charisma
Welcome! This game is very fun with a big community haha
hello i am new to both the game and the server
i know the rules and i want to have fun
hi, i am new to everything of D&D but i want to learn an play
This channel's pinned messages and #learn-to-play would be a good place to start!
oh ty!

Ty
Is that Mii character?
Anyway, if you have a gaming store near you, there more likely will be someone running D&D at said store. You can also buy the 2024 version and run a simple dungeon crawl with friends. My brothers and I learned the game by having one of my brother's friend run a game for us.
I was lucky, honestly just chat around see if anyone is willing to accept someone (idk if ur new to the server or new to dnd so mention that if so, it's how I found mine, they were willing to teach 4 people including me)

Druid is a class on its own. I suggest reading the basic rules section on the Druid for more info

HiHi
Hi! I am sponsoring a game club and was looking for tips on starting new players. I will have individuals of all different experience levels and limited time. I am used to having hours with a party, so suggestions would be great.
Not really, but I'm an advocate that most themes can be achieved through reflavoring existing official subclasses
Choosing a Draconic Sorcerer, with the white or silver ancestry would give you a good base to enhance the damage of cold-damage spells. There aren't a massive amount of cold damage spells at every level so you may need to get creative with reflavoring. You would also need to reflavor the various draconic themed features to be something else
Playing a Phantom Rogue could really play into the mysterious nature of the Yuki-onna. Being spirits that deal in death, also plays well into this rogue subclass' themes.
A Way of the Ascendant Dragon Monk could imo be a really cool concept if you do a lot of reflavoring. Reflavoring the Draconic Presence ability to take on a spirit form that helps with initimidation and/or persuasion would be fun, and using Draconic Strikes to voluntarily only deal cold damage when you make your attacks would give you that important aspect of the Yuki-onna
I did find a homebrew yuki-onna
Its generally advised for newer players to steer clear of homebrew unless your DM is specifically permitting it for their campaign. It can be unbalanced or straight up not allowed at some tables
I see...
The Yuki-onna is really giving off a lot of hag vibes. Have you considered playing a warlock that has made a pact with one of these entities in exchange for magic?
Now my head hurts...

Warlocks cast magic through someone or something else, rather than reading spells like Harry Potter.
Sorry I assumed you had read through the rules first to get an idea of what all the classes were
Tbf I'm 5 years in and still have to Google how some of the classes work XD
First time seeing a player playing an artificer this campaign "You get a what?! And it has LEGS?!"
I just wanted to play something I'm interested in xD
definitely do that, having a really focussed point of inspiration for a character is a great help
Try out the dndbeyond character creator.
I am
For free you can try out a limited range of options. If you join a game your dungeon master can pay to share premium content with you.
Yea
I don't know I'm new xD
Yes
Most if not all of those terms
No
I'm doing so on dnd beyond
I just don't know what class to pick...
They're all fun in their own way
I wanna be able to do both magic (main damage) and melee
Best bet is probably warlock but most classes have a way or doing that
I noticed blood hunter
Most casters can do that. College of Swords bard for example or Bladesinger wizard.
At lvl 3 you get a subclass which opens up more option.
Blood hunter is from critical role
Imma choose blood hunter as my class
Is the hexblade the actual patron?
Your warlock patron, the one who grants you strength
Am I crazy?
What do i get?
Acrobatics, Arcana, Athletics, History, Insight, Investigation, Religion, and Survival
-_-
Warlock lvl1, "Otherworldly Patron"
I'm trying to make a character...
You just gaslit me into thinking the warlock patron wasn't real
Blood hunter is an interesting choice, but if you don't already have a game to play in just know that some DMs don't allow that class. It's partnered content but not one of the typical D&D classes like Warlock, sorcerer, fighter etc are
When you try to do something in game you use one of the skills to do it. Say you wanted to climb a cliff, you would roll a d20 see what you get and add the modifier from that skill. If the number is high enough, if it's not, you fail.

Thank you
When you pick a skill like this you add your proficiency modifier to it. Think of proficiency modifier like general competence. It's how much better you are at anything you've actually trained for. It goes up over time.
If you don't have proficiency in a skill you can still use it it's just slightly harder. You're less likely to convince a guard someone else stole that cool amulet for example
Dex and intel
I don't want to play a warlock. I've chosen blood hunter
Acrobatic is Dex I assume
Dexterity affects your ability to hit and do damage with lighter faster weapons and increases your ability to dodge and sneak. Intelligence is used for wizards casting spells, understanding books and scrolls and investigating things.
It's a homebrew class from critical role
Intelligence?
Acrobatics, Arcana, Athletics, History, Insight, Investigation, Religion, and Survival
These are my choices
Most dms probably won't let you play blood hunter though
Yes so you add your proficiency bonus whenever you use that ability to avoid something like a spell. Someone lobs a fireball at you, you use your dexterity to dodge out the way.
I'm slowly losing motivation to use blood hunter
I really wouldn't go with it.
Ugh... then what do I play
For your first game I'd go with something like a fighter or rogue
Your dm will be able to help you with a lot of this.
Nothing wrong with using a premade character
I understand, but I want to use a character I made and have an attachment too
Perhaps you could stick to character making. Try things out. Once you're comfortable with your grasp on the rules start hunting for a DM.
If you come up with a character concept I can help you with creation
Are their any terms for a dnd group/session type that focuses more on having fun then like a hardcore roleplay or combat simulator?
What does the nature skill do?
Lighthearted maybe?
Just make random characters to hone your knowledge on how the system works.
Stuff like foraging for berries, noticing weather
Ohhh ok that makes sense
Identify any natural phenomena as well as plants and animals.
That would fall more under survival.
Animals can also be animal handling too.
I said identify.
Holy cow there’s a lot to put in a character sheet
If I’m not good with art could I grab a free image off of google
I really wouldn't get too bogged down in it all.
I'm using dnd beyond
@lyric fjord? I am not sure if you have read about the basics of DnD but if you haven't start here instead.
I have alley
Most classes have 2 key ability points. So long as those two are high your character will be ok. Just focus on the basics.
What is that?
It is a sickle with a chain on it
No but you could reflavor something like a whip to be one, pending DM approval
No but there is a sickle and there are chains.
No but you can work with your DM and group to reflavor a weapon (e.g. keep the core game mechanics but describe it as the weapon you like)
Kusarigama's are used for disarming and restraining.
All melee weapons just do an amount of damage
There are sickles in this game. Whether your DM allows you to use a sickle with a chain on it, it's a different thing. Some DMs might be open to the idea while others might not.
Certain classes get the ability to do that.
Weapons that do something specific tend to be magical items, something that DMs don't often give away.
You're not going to learn everything, it's impossible. But if you come up with a character concept we can probably help you make something mechanically similar in game.
A magic/melee class that primarily uses ice attacks/magic
That is probably going to be a warlock or sorcerer
Ummm... I am afraid a lot of spells in DnD require verbal components.
Ugh
I am not sure why this is a deal breaker for you.
What is your definition of a verbal spel?
Saying the spells name
Sorcerer does have the ability to cast some spells without a verbal component
Bards can cast spells by just swearing at people
If I'm a bard I'm being a meme bard
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeo, Im new here, want to play a game of d&d and wanna know how it works and allat
All bards are meme bards. I'm a bagpipe playing goblin and I've never looked back.
In DnD you have to say a very short incantation in order to cast a spell. However wizards don't announce the name of a spell as if they're in an animated show. 😅
What do I pick
Arcana, Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Persuasion, and Religion
Yer you just have to something. Even if it's just RAAAARRRRRRR
Ask yourself this. What is your character good at?
Also think about how much combat do you think you're going to do/do you want to do. If you make a character based solely on combat and most of the game is just doing stuff in town you might now have fun.
I'll take deception first
What does Arcana do?
It's understanding magical things. Like if someone has a spell cast on them.
Arcana is knowledge on magical rituals, creatures as well as spells.
What kind of creatures would your character have a habit of mingling with? Are there any creatures your character would have studied?
What religion you follow.
Doesn't have direct mechanical impact but if you're in a campaign where there's a religious conflict it might be really important
Typically a lot if not most characters in a DnD world look up to one or more gods. However it's not unheard of for people to just not care about any of the gods.
This is all really stuff you should decide after you know what game you're in. A GM might say that religion doesn't exist in their world.
That is unlikely but possible nonetheless.
I'm onto the abilities
True. But any kind of wider world backstory stuff you should speak to the DM about before the game in case there's anything important you need to know.
so i picked True Strike (2014version) like a noob not realizing just attacking with two weapons has better odds. Any suggestions on being able to use this spell more efficiently.... or at all?
cast it one round before combat starts
No. You have picked the only spell that has no good uses.
There's also lots of abilities which require advantage
The new version of true strike is an entirely different creature. Much more useful.
totally, I am hoping my DM will either let me change it for lack of knowledge since we are stilling to the 2014 rules
or go 2024
I honestly can't imagine he wont allow you to change to something different
as a bard would i get any of those?
oh my god I forgot it was only you who got advantage
I thought you could apply it to someone else
if you multiclass into rogue having advantage lets you do your sneak attack
yeah its not useful at all lol, but the new one is but I will see if they will let me change it. I am a skeletal bard that detaches my hand for mage hand so I am leaning towards them saying yes
that's a good idea, another thing I fouled hard on. "create a level 6 character" proceeds to go full bard...
That is absolutely badass. Also yer its definately more useful, so useful in fact I've just realised it might be problematically powerful for one player in my game if he takes it XD
you also get advantage from being hidden, and rogues can hide as a bonus action. And they do sneak attack if another ally is fighting them.
and thinking about it hiding before comabt also gives advantage making true strike useless there too.......
prob why they rewrote the whole spell hahaha
and its a cantrip so if you use it on a character with multi attack you lose 2 attakcs
yer but they seem to have somewhat overdone it....
As written it seems to apply to ranged weapons.
They didn't make true strike better, they just made it a different spell
yeah still new it reminded me of the green flame blade
me reading this as I've just agreed to give my player a 1d12 musket on a caster 👀
yeah I am reading it now, I don't see why you couldn't use it ranged as it is worded now
dang
why would you ever use another cantrip now
gonna dump on that musket
It doesn't have a 5 ft range like the blade cantrips?
heavy crossbow is 1d10
(a weapon with which you have proficiency and that is worth 1+ CP)
So my buddy convinced me to try playing dnd but I know nothing about it can someone help me
cast on self

HI and welcome! the info the bot just dropped is helpful, it goes over the basics
I guess if they got rid of the Self (distance) ranges that might effect the blade cantrips too
sacred flame is 1d8, 60ft and has a dex save lol.
and true strike can just switch to being a melee attack
thats a big oversight, but I know what I am picking for my new campaign that IS going 2024 lol
I am SO glad I asked about this
There are still times when sacred flame might be a better choice
This is the thing with the new rules, they're similar enough that you don't spend the time looking at them closely and then you turn up and a player starts casting true strike and you're blind sided by this now really powerful cantrip
if there's an enemy with super high AC but low dex I guess but that's rare.
the only reason I did was cause I got made fun of twice! why'd you pick that so I looked at the new one today lol
"idk cause I am new"
True strike was always a huge meme. People would take it as a joke.
Or you have disadvantage for some reason. Or there's invisible total cover, or you're a cleric
I need help with the points
What radiant damage
The fact that they let you use your casting stat for the attack is probably the strongest part about it.
I don't understand.
i think this nails it though, just laughing at meme boy then BAM!
I don't understand the ability
I didn't mention radiant damage? So I'm not sure what you're asking. I was just listing reasons you might want sacred flame instead
sorry WHY radiant damage, my autocorrect has been on a mad one today. Got muted when it autocorrect something from stunt 👀

basically it just adds damage to any weapon attack and you can decide if that damage is radiant or just more of your weapons damage. they didn't add a limit if it was ranged or not
Anyway, what part of the scores are confusing you?
Ability points are your innate physical qualities. Strength is damage with big weapons and carrying capacity, dex dodging, light weapons and most ranged weapons, int wizard spell casting, wisdom spell casting for druids, clerics and monks I think, charisma is persuading people and spell casting for warlocks, sorcerers and bards I think.
They're creating their first character, they don't know what ability points do
It's also not a cleric spell last I checked

How would I distribute the points between the 6 stats?
Generally speaking, you would determine your base stats with one of the standard methods and then choose which number to put in each ability
depends on the class. A fighter would have high strenght and/or dex, high constitution. A wizard would have high inteligence.
Where are you getting stuck?
I couldn't pick what Stat to put points in since my character is a high elf dragonic bloodline sorcerer
Charisma for spells, dex for dodging
Those are the big ones?
For a sorcerer yes
Well, and everyone needs CON.
Constitution. Constitution is so very very important for a fullcaster
Glass cannon
Hello I wonder if there's any DnD game or is it possible to play as a Vampire? Since I've found this homebrew section: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/528209-vampire
I think damphir are vampire spawn
I think vampire the masquerade, but I haven’t played it
Vampire the Masquerade is a very popular TTRPG
Damphir too
But also ask your dm and maybe you can use/make something homebrew
What do I pick for equipment?
Yet I have my own reasons why I don't like VtM myself and they happen to direct me here as a alternative.
You would have to get specfiic DM buy-in to use this. The main reason for this is that Vampires have many issues stemming from their curse that make them... difficult, to use as PCs. They are obsessive and cannot develop a love for anything without it destroying them emotionally. Its a sad existence, and not one prone to being trusted in an adventuring party
You should think what exactly you mean by "play as a vampire".
Aren't Dhampyrs half breeds that are not only weaker but also not even undead or immortal at all which makes them "half assed" and not the full thing that is.
Probably some finesse weapons like daggers or sickles would be for your weapon
you dont want to be a full vampire, for the reasons I stated above. Being only half of the real deal isn't entirely a bad thing
I'm not sure tbh, but the great thing about dnd is you can just change it if the DM is ok with that. Be a vampire spawn
Also gives you a goal. Become full assed vampire
Yes I do want to be a full vampire
You could have your sorcerous origin be a vampire too, if you want some backstory stuff
I don't want to play as a Dhampyr
Then you'll need to find a group that's okay with that
What aspects of vampire do you want. What is full vampire to you
Yeooo, never played dnd in my life and just made a character with the tool thingy, can yall let me know if im missing something?
They are obsessive and cannot develop a love for anything without it destroying them emotionally.
So Vampires are default are automatically abusers pretty much? Aren't Kindred/Cainites already this due to their own beast within?
Essentially yes, anything they had a love for in their life is driven deep into their mentaility to the point of obsession.
Finished
Scroll down to the 'Dark Desires' paragraph under the vampire statblock and tell me it would be a good fit for an adventuring party
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17043-vampire
You could also be a drow that has a curse that forces them to drink blood. Drow have sunlight sensitivity so that might work
I wonder if it's possible to ignore this or rewrite the rules?
For sure possible, but that'll be a discussion for you and your DM
Yeah you definitely could ignore it
If you want an official solution, Dhampir is the best bet
Once again I don't want to play as a Dhampyr
They're not the full thing
May I ask what part of the Dhampir turns you off it?
Like, what part of the vampire do you absoluttely need that the Dhamp doesn't do
Because they're not immortal and they're weaker than actual vampires
Also they're still alive not undead.
You understand immortality is kinda game breaking right
I'd imagine most DMs familiar with the game will give you a major No on this front.
If you want to play an immortal character, that is stronger than other PCs you will have a hard time playing that at any table. It is best and fair to be on the same power level as the rest of the party
Don't care about that which is exactly the point with Vampires in the first place.
Its not a matter of your character not caring, its a matter that your DM and other players will
Its like playing with a hacker in a video game, its not fun being on entirely different levels of capability
You might be able to find a DM that goes old school Vampire lore, your body dies then you are a useless cloud until you feed
DND is a team game. If you want something like that it'll need to be some weird high level game. You're not going to be a full fledged lvl 1 vampire while the rest of the party is casting true strike
I think the best solution to that have the entire party to be vampires then.
Or either that different type of supernatural creatures.
That sounds like a good time
I mean you might be able to find a DM that will do that but its a little OP to have an immortal team. But if you can explain it, for example I am a skeletal bard cursed with life in my game, I have advantage on my death saving throws as I was able to explain enough about my character, not game breaking but I have an edge but understand I can still be killed
You could probably convince people to give that a go for a session or 2 but being immortal gets kinda boring real fast
Playing OP characters is the point
Playing powerful characters is a point of 5e, yes
Give the character the curse of the mimic
when you get to level 20, you're practically a god
We're probably well outside the realm of #dnd-newcomers by this point. This may be better for #dnd-discussion?
Yeah let's steer thing back to helping newcomers learn the core game rules and mechanics
What’s the difference between a GM and a DM?
Ultimately trademarks and copyrights
They are the same thing though - someone who's role is to manage and guide a TTRPG game and often makes rulings and interprets results.
Oh alright
It means Game master and Dungeon master respectivly
Can you guys give me tips on how to make a wizard character
#character-discussion would be a great channel for this discussion
mage armour is a really great spell, if you have high dex you can have respectable AC even as a wizard
Sure there a tons of different types of wizard what will be your playstyle
Any advise for a new rogue?
also 2024 rules or 2014
which has more options?
I'm going to nudge the detailed character discussion to #character-discussion
This channel should be more focussed on helping new to D&D folks learn core game rules and game mechanics
Oki
Hello! I was wondering what a paladin does? I know that they are a type of knight and priest mix? Is that right?
It's like a fighter + cleric mix.
They have some neat features like auras of protection that can help them and their allies within range improve their saving throws.
They are pretty good at dealing out damage using their smite feature - they can expend a spell slot to do more damage on a successful hit.
Okay. Does the range and how much damage they do depend on species?
No? Range is based on your weapon's characteristics. Unless you mean movement?
I mean both? Idk anymore.
So your movement speed is determined by your species (and sometimes buffed by your class or reduced by your equipment).
Your attack range is determined by the weapon or spell you're using.
Which channel do I go to for advice on character building?
Ty

i'd like to join a game but am a beginner
thats okay, there are a lot of us like that. If you don't have any luck in #find-a-game there are lot of other options
i have a question on how i should make My character, a friend of mine said i should do a Changeling Warlock since my character has a unique anatomy, and certain abilities built into the character, and i was looking on how i would be able to implement it into dnd terms
if your character is of a unique species/race, I would just recommend homebrewing a race
races do what they say they do, but not anything else
changeling states that
You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your game statistics change.
so if you want actual mechanics/abilities tied into your unique anatomy, you should homebrew something or find a homebrew that suits your fancy
Hhh, Okay, I mainly dubbed the species name as an Omni-Human considering it has several capabilities that humans wouldn't normally have including Durability control, Elasticity and elemental Control. also some Select few having Dual soul or fusion capabilities
I'll see how i can do it
Your best bets for translating your existing character into D&D would probably be asking in #character-discussion if any races / classes get you close to what you're looking for, or #homebrew if you want to make your own thing 👍
Aight
So how do you even get into this game?
Hey! there are lots of ways, you can start with the bot drop above, there is also #find-a-game. Personally I watched a bunch of people play before jumping in and started with a pay session

Hi all! I’m super new to dnd. Like basically novice oops. Where do you get started? And how?
Sorry if that question is too vague!
Welcome! I'm new too, #find-a-game is where you go to look for games but the above that Zero dropped is the basic beginnings
Thx!! It all looks v intimidating tbh
I’ve always wanted to play but only knew ppl who were already in campaigns or who didn’t play at all
I know the feeling, there are a lot of great community members here so hopefully you get connected quick. You should look for a One Shot, they have beginner ones that are a single session so you learn the game through playing
Ah that would be great!! I was reading through the rules and got overwhelmed lol
I learn better by doing yknow
