ohh right right
so, When i shape into a giant scorpion, i get scorpions armor + dex and con modifier?
No, you get 10 + con + dex, or the scorpions AC
whichever is higher
No they do not, as attacks are n checks. you can use reckless attack for advantage though
Who is more important/powerful between Demons, Celestials, Devils, and Elementals?
Not really something we can answer. They are different groups with individuals of varying power levels/importance
And that can change across settings and even DM-specific games
Damn
True
This channel is also more for helping new to D&D folks get started with the core game rules and mechanics
Why would you like to know?
True sorry
I'm just interested in their differences
Besides I don't really understand elementals
Can I nudge this discussion over to #dnd-discussion
Sure
There is the 2014 version of the spell (requires 2014 Players Handbook) and a 2024 version of the spell (requires 2024 version of Players Handbook).
Make sure you have the book (or are building the character in a campaign with access to the book) for the spell.
ahh makes sense
How do the martial arts of a level 1 monk work with other weapons?
Do I just add the 1d4?
Monk Weapons are simple melee weapons without the two-handed or heavy properties, plus shortswords. Monk weapons use their own damage dice, not the martial arts die.
If you're using anything with the two-handed or heavy properties or shortswords, then you do not add the d4
So if I use a quarterstaff,
I roll 1d6 and 1d4?
And then add the results together? (For damage roll)
Kind of. When you're using a quarterstaff (or any monk weapon), the damage rolls are separate for your attack and bonus action unarmed strike.
Let’s say you’re a level 1 monk with a Dexterity modifier of +3. You attack with the quarterstaff:
Roll 1d6 + 3 (Dexterity modifier).
You roll a 4 on the d6, so your total damage is 7.
Then, you make an unarmed strike as a bonus action:
Roll 1d4 + 3 (Dexterity modifier).
You roll a 2 on the d4, so your unarmed strike damage is 5.
So the total damage for both attacks would be 7 (quarterstaff) + 5 (unarmed strike), but they are considered separate damage rolls.
Did that clarify it?
Yes, thank you
Good morning everyone
mornin
It adds 1 bonus attack + dexterity
Yessir
Thanks 🙏🙏
Np!
And just FYI, it doesn't give you an extra bonus action, the martial arts IS your bonus action. It just give you the option of using the feature for an unarmed strike. 👍🏽
Yea
Like, it isn't one extra turn
Just that bonus attack
Yee
Quick question is it possible to have a bonus action when you are raging
If your class has a feature for that, then yes
Ok
Raging does not stop bonus actions (it does impact spellcasting/concentration)
Oh ok thanks
Wait can a quarterstaff add a dexterity modifier instead of a strength one? (It's versatiles)
Yes
Yes
Can all versatile weapons do that?
Yee
So, the only weapons that can use dex are finesse, versatile, and thrown?
If it says it has the versatile property, you can use dex or str
Sorry, I was having a brain fart. Versatile weapons mean they can be used one handed or two handed. Finesse weapons are the ones that you can use either dex or str
Oh damn
The weapons that use dex are finesse, thrown, and ranged
Yea
Hmmmmmm
On DnD there isn't any "bleeding" effect or something like that from using a dagger right?
5e does not have a bleeding effect in the normal PHB
Sick, thanks
There isn't a general mechanic/condition for bleeding, just like there isn't one for burning. Instead, a weapon (or monster, or whatever) that causes bleeding would have that special effect explained in the description. I would say that it's up to DM discretion
Yea
hey guys, I am interested in dnd since the narrative and choices was making me intrigued to play one of dnd
lesgooo
tho I am new to the info since I already know some basis of classes and roles that I am unsure on what to assign myself so yea

neat!
If were to multi class as a barbarian and Druid what do u do
How do you mean? Are you already a barbarian, and want to multiclass?
If so, you just wait until your PC levels up, and specify that you're putting one level into druid. Then you just go into the PHB and add the necessary additions to your character as needed from there (Ie: Hit die, Spells, Feats, etc.)
Yup I’m already a barbarian
Cool, then you'll just follow what I sent in my previous message
Alrighty
do I need to choose the race from D&D or can I be creative with races?
just wanna know
That's up to you DM. Talk with them and see what they allow in their campaign
Most D&D games will stick with the normal game rules and options.
But you can always check with your Dungeon Master and group and see if they are okay with homebrewed options (homebrew being stuff you or the community create that are not formally part of D&D)
Yeah I'd ike to try it out. Been reading over it myself.
There's an alignment chart. You can find it easily online. It's more or less where your PC falls morally
So I just started dm’ing with my friends any thoughts for what I could do
yea but like what kind of alignment? lawful and neutral and chaotic?
I guess I'll take that as a yes
Here's a video that can explain it faster and better than I can over text lmao: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7ANzMWd4xI

Thank you
ok I have 2 extra questions
yuh
do I make exp for the blank sheet 0? since I am new
if so, then what do I do for those stats about speed intelligent etc.
Have you taken a look at the basic rules yet? The first Chapter covers stat generation
And yeah XP should be set at 0
Depends on if your DM is running it through EXP system or milestone. EXP system can get kinda convuluted, so I would put a 0 there for now. If your DM is running it in Milestone based system, you can ignore that EXP line.
And for those stats, I'd read through the PHB so you can get a general idea on the rules for making a character
nope, there was some I got confused with
like for example, and that's my 2nd question: what is the background for the top most in blank sheet?
but since you said that, I should check it out
sorry for wasting your time
No worries! This channel’s pins and #learn-to-play both have a link to them
Nah, you're all good man. Just read through the PBH and you'll find all your answers and more
As for background, it’s essentially your profession pre-adventure. More accurately it’s the part of your adventurer’s like that has most defined them, giving them extra skills and abilities. There are a few options in the Basic Rules, more in the PHB and other adventures, but there are also rules for making a custom background if the existing ones don’t quite match to your liking

If I have a soldier backstory, but leave the military, do I still have the military rank feature?
Yes
If the feature doesn’t state a condition for losing it, the general rule is that you can’t lose it
question: does Flaw mean I have to say something like a secret or trauma so I will be easily exploitable or is it also a personality trait like being stubborn or being gullible?
It’s more so the latter
So if I desert will I still be welcomed in military encampments?
That’s up to your DM
oh so perssonality?
Pretty much. It can include trauma or secrets but doesn’t have to
well I'll try to put flaws as a trauma or phobia and/or secrets
Specifically the text of Military Rank on encampments state you can access friendly ones where your rank is recognized. That part specifically is up to your DM if an encampment is friendly and recognizes your rank. If you decided to desert I would expect it’d likely make getting access to your former military harder
My advice for flaws is to make them relatively simple and unobtrusive for the party. For example, say you want to put “Reckless” as a flaw:
- Bad Method: Greg the Barbarian is reckless so he’s quick to violence and often charges into battle without thinking, even in inappropriate circumstances (i.e. in public, w/o looking for traps, after being disrespected at a noble gala).
- Good Method: Greg the Barbarian is reckless so he often wants to take the high risk high reward route to solve problems. He has no qualms about risking his life to aid his teammates and is willing to put himself in harm’s way if it’d mean they have a better chance of surviving, which often means he’s a little more beat up at the end of a battle.
thanks
ok so question about how to use my points, what do I do?
You mean your stats? Are you using point buy?
I am new so I have no clue, I just want to know how do I determine the point stats system
since he said that
Exp setting doesn’t matter, that’s for leveling up your character not setting your ability scores
ok, what about stats? does it really matter or do I need to be a specific class to gain the extra bonus points to make the rolls worth?
Basic Rules Chapter 1 goes over the 3 methods of stat generation:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
I recommend using Point Buy (described in the “Variant: Customizing Ability Scores” header) or Standard Array (described but unnamed at the end of the 3rd paragraph of the link I sent).
Stats do matter for your character as it determines what they’re good at both in and out of combat. Classes will typically have a “main stat” (as described in their class pages), but classes don’t give out extra starting stats. Your race does (if you later switch to the 2024 rules which come out later this month, your background will provide the stat bonus instead)
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
oh I have to do step 1?
What do you mean by Step 1?
Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
No those are all different methods to determining your stats
No that’s one of the methods for generating stats
Pick whichever one you want or that your DM allows
As I said you should be using Point Buy or Standard Array if you haven’t found a game yet where the DM has said otherwise
Rolling for stats is usually not used unless the DM says so and the rolls are made in front of them to prevent cheating
is point buy on a website? if so then I havent logged in since I was doing the blank sheet
Point buy uses a certain amount of points from a pool. You choose where the points go
D&DBeyond’s digital character creator has an option for Point Buy
I don’t remember how it works though
Otherwise the link I sent you has instructions on how to do PB
Same thing for the link the bot posted
You can find the rules for point buy here:

Hi @tranquil ether . What do you want to know?
How to make a good character sheet and be able to play a game.
DndBeyond makes it pretty easy though, creating a character
well now I feel like an idiot
Hey! are you confused too? cuz i am lol
yea I am
I joined after playing BG3, i found the setting to be cool and wanted to try the game
since I was lookin forward to play DnD as a my own custom character
Pfft easy for you maybe! You might be an eldritch god for all we know!
that's entirely possible of course... first you want to find a Dungeon Master though to work with so they can approve what you want to create for their game
ok now that I am done with making my own character
what do I do now? since I am now lookin for DM to try the game and done #find-a-game
Do i start creating my character now?
oh dang, i didn't know we're starting like that lol, just a sec
well...obviously? you cant play a roleplaying game if you dont have a character or smth
No i didn't know i was supposed to create a character and contact a DM, i thought i have to contact a DM and THEN make a character.
mb
oh, well you do you
I just want to find a DM so I can ask some question regarding my OC
alright
Order doesn’t matter that much imo. Some DMs are ok with premades, some like you to make a character at the table
Making a character before joining is recommended in either case because it’s really good for learning the rules
true... but if you want to create your own original content or rules, you would definitely want to have it approved before trying to join someone's game
mmmmh, do I buy Book of Ebon Tides?
I’m pretty sure they mean OC as making their own character instead of making homebrew content
If you want, you can ask for more info in #third-party
dnd beyond has most of the rules

Hellow everyone
Hiiii! I'm new to D&D and tabletops in general for the most part! I've only ever played 3.5 a bit but I'm looking to get into 5e. Only other ttrpg I've experience playing is Cyberpunk:Red. ^-^
Hi I’m looking for a game going group anyone got a free spot I wont to start playing dnd
weclome everyone
if you're looking for a game, check out #looking-for-players
Ok Ty
and of course see this for the rules and such
Hey, new to the discord but been at dnd for probably 30+ years?
3.5 was my favorite
Not a fan of how they've reworked druids
Used to be the forever DM, but thanks to a head injury I haven't DM'd for a few years, tried once and couldn't manage to pull off the old magic, trying to get back into things
Not sure what else to say
that doesn't sound very new to me welcome
The bot commands start with /looking-for then select dm.
The bot then gives you a form to fill out.
Once you submit the form, it creates a post in #looking-for-dm and then attaches a thread to the post.
Use the thread to communicate with folks or to clarify things or correct any information.
thx

Looks pretty good at a first glance! A link to the sheet itself would be easier to review than the PDF.
You probably want a higher Constitution, though.
That’ll increase your max HP and help keep you alive.
A higher Dexterity would be good, too, unless you’re using heavy armor.
Speaking of which, I don’t think you’ve equipped the armor you do have.
soundboards, fun or annoying?

I just went to test it.... does not play nice with discord, just sounds way off. Worse than my voice lol, lesson learned
Well, there is one for burning, now.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/rules-glossary#BurningHazard
Monk's Martial Arts die replaces the normal damage formula, not additive.
So you can deal a die of damage + your Dexterity modifier, with unarmed strikes, instead of 1 + your Strength modifier, in damage. And with a martial arts die of a d6 or higher, you could use a Dagger (normally a d4), and use a d6 (or however big your martial arts die is) for damage with it.
Greetings I am JET I am rather new to this game but always wanted to play it. Heard it's like a roleplay game. But isn't sure how to play it but want to thouhg

hey I'm new just had my first game with friends this evening and it was great so i figured i could join dc
I made a Human Paladin didn't want to go crazy on my first character but i have plans on some other stuff if i get hooked
We played a campaign about goblins my team was kinda throwing but i saved the day with a perfect roll on a Divine Smite and we all shared out 100gold!
Also we were all beginers so I'm sure we missed on a lot and probably messed up some rules but it was super fun and I'm already thinking on 3d printing some figurines
Mistakes are inevitable, even after years of play. So long as everyone's good sports about them and you all make fewer of them, it should be no issue!
The best part of the night was my turn when i came up the a stone and wanted to recruit a him to our team(rolled 20). "With you'r best voice and acting you invite the stone to the team and the rock with passion answears: "..." ".
there was a dramatic pause and we all busted out laughing
What’s the question?
Hello, I've been listening to alot of dnd stuff, allways been wanting to do anything dnd related for a while. Any books that could help me kinda understand a little more about it? Specifically 5E sense that seems to be the most popular.

I bought the Players Handbook, Dungeon Master's Book, and a starter kit (lost mines) a few years ago with the full intent of learning as a household how to play, we've never used any of them. I've never played before, but I'm getting an itch to want to play for the first time, once again. With the 2024 edition looming, I've been wondering, do I get rid of my old books (money's tight for a new book purchase), and pick up the new PH since that's what all new content will be based on, or should I hold onto the old books just in case i find a group that wants to stick to the slightly older rules?
The general formula of the game hasn’t really changed in the new books.
I think you’d be fine to continue with the books you’ve got.
I'm new as well and very similar story, I got the new book cause it was on sale so I said why not but the general consensus is get the free version, its gonna be awhile before people make the switch and if you need content your DM should be able to supply
But you could check out the D&D Free Rules if you want to compare for yourself:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Thanks you 2.
My DM is running a homebrew campaign starting at level 8. I'm a relatively new player and want to play an Aarakocra Way of Shadow Monk, but it's hard to find info without paying for D&D Beyond.
've heard some Unearthed Arcana changes were added to the Monk class, but I can't verify how accurate that is. Right now, I'm using the 5e Wiki, but I'm not sure how reliable or up-to-date it is. I've also read that without certain changes, the Monk class isn't very strong. Any help would be appreciated
Goat 🔥
Hey everyone, I am brand spanking new to all of this (never played and dont know how to play or make a character). I really enjoy watching others play DnD and love the concept but I have No clue on what im doing when it comes to the very basics and I was hoping some kind adventurer may take me under his wing and show me the ropes. Thanks!
Same actually
The basic rules is free on dnd beyond.
The website is owned by WOTC, the company that owns D&D, so it's one of the most reliable sources to learn about the rules and mechanics of D&D.
I don't recommend the wikis for two reasons.
- The first, it can often contain false or homebrew information because any random person can change the wiki page.
- The second, wikis will sometimes contain pirated information and sharing pirated content on this official dnd server is not allowed.
Since you're already a part of campaign group, you should explore these options to figure out what would work best for you and your group.
Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only

5e is pretty easy to pick up
I've played since it launched in 2014 and really do enjoy the ease of useof the sytem. Super easy to teach as well
@tacit forge a lot of DM's have shared content. If you're just playing as a player you can probably get away without having to buy the 2024 book right away
What are the books with new (sub) classes, spells or smth like that?
yo, now that I am done with creating my character as an OC, where do I go to find groups for DnD so I can learn more from experience?

i just played that app and this seems really fun
Just joined
Hello👋
Question about buying items. If I'm not playing can i just add an item for it's full price(on the app) because yesterday we got into a cave and non of us had torches and no rope to get out and get some so could i just add that kind of items(for a price ofc)?
How much attack bonus do you get with an unarmed attack?
That’s up to your DM if they would allow you to retroactively purchase items like that.
Unarmed strikes are a weapon attack using strength that deal 1+Str Mod bludgeoning damage. You’re considered proficient in unarmed strikes regardless of your character
You might have a feature that modifies or changes this damage, such as the Tabaxi’s claws
Oh so +3? (My character has 13 strentgh)
Yeah, assuming you’re level 1 your rolls would then be:
- 1d20+3 for the attack roll
- 1+1 for the damage roll
Wait wdym +4 for attack roll
Yeah, monk’s martial arts feature modifies the damage and stat used for unarmed strikes, which you can read about on their class page
Wait whoops miscalculated a bit, I’ll correct my values
Yeah it should be 1d20+PB+Str mod, I accidentally put +2 for your Str mod when 13 STR should only give you +1
Yeah the martial arts feature lets you do that
In fact, Monk’s unarmed strikes do their martial arts die + strength or dex
Hellooo... Been watching a few D&D YouTube channels for a bit. Not finished any but slowly getting there. I'm new and have no idea about any of dnd stuff, like dice rolls, stats.
At level 1 it will change to 1d4+Str/Dex, but as you level up the die size will grow
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
Thanks 👍
And would the attack bonus be +5?
+2 proficiency and +3 dex?
yep
And you'd do 1d4 + Dexmod damage
(Addendum: The 2024 Monk, in the 2024 Player's Handbook, ||currently only in early access given to Master Subscribers who preordered and people they share with||, starts at a d6)
And can I do a normal attack while im unarmed, and then add the 1d4?
not add, replace
On the Handbook it says I can either replace it or add it as a bonus action
If you do an unarmed strike, Martial Arts lets you use Dex instead of Str, so Dex+PB to hit instead of Str+PB to hit, and instead of 1+Str damage, you can do 1d4+Dex damage.
What's the exact wording you're looking at? Copy and paste
"When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or nonk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action."
Page 78
That's making an unarmed strike as a bonus action.
It's an entire, separate attack. As an unarmed strike and as a Monk, you can use Dex+PB to hit, and 1d4+Dex damage, instead of Str+PB to hit and 1+Str damage.
So I could
Do 1 attack unarmed, doing 1 blunt damage
And then use this bonus action to do another attack unarmed, a 1d4 + dex modifier
Right?
Not 1 damage
1d4+Dex damage
every time you ever do an unarmed strike, you're allowed to do it as your monk feature says, using Dexterity, and with an actual damage die + mod, instead of a flat 1+mod
So can I do a 1d4 + dex modifier, and then use my bonus action to do the same again? Or can I only do one?
You can indeed use your Action to take the Attack action, making 1 attack, doing an Unarmed Strike for your attack (and as a monk your unarmed strikes can be dex-based and use a d4 damage die), and then since you did that, use your Bonus Action to make 1 unarmed strike attack (same benefits as said before)
Of course, these assume you hit your attacks - which is helped by being able to use Dexterity, as you want that super high as a Monk, since it also governs your armor class and a few other things you do
How’s everyone’s day been
So I can do basically 1d8 + 6 (I have 3 dex) of damage with one turn?
Pretty good
Can I join if that’s ok with all
The convo?
No, you can do 1d4+3, 1d4+3
...
1d4+1d4
3 + 3
(2d4 is better than 1d8, as even if you roll terribly, two 1's are better than one 1)
Yeah but it's basically the same, but yeah I meant that
I can do 2d4 and +6 on one turn?
(if it hits ofc)
Important distinction
But yes you can do a total of 2d4+6 total damage on a turn, as a level 1 Monk, with that +3 Dexterity modifier.
somewhat. A barbarian can do 1d12+5 damage (because barbarians get a damage bonus for Rage feature) in one hit. A rogue can do 1d8+1d6+3 damage in one hit.
Wow
Fyi, I only know in depth the fighter class
Damn
I thought monks were pretty weak
People tend to say that because they go from being a raw statistical powerhouse, to more of a... combat utility class
Which, don't get me wrong, is very nice to have, like "go run down the caster and spam stun them"
But it's not necessarily "do forty trillion gorillion damage to the boss monster" like some other classes can achieve
Yeah true
But yes, it's possible you might find a DM who has early access to the 2024 revision of the player's handbook, which includes basically buffs to everything, like making monk start with a d6 martial arts die and end with a d12, instead of the aforementioned version starting with a d4 and ending with a d10.
Ohh hey. I'm here. I knew the D and D.
tyvm
is it a good idea to use steams tabletop simulator for dnd to manage character sheet and stuff?
can you recommend other software to make dnd easier or funnier?
Untitled presentation
Owlbear Rodeo and Kenku FM are my 'weapons of choice'
ok, now im curious because of the names 😄
owlbear rodeo is a virtual tabletop with next to no bells and whistles, just at base, a board to put images on and move them around. You can add extra bells and whistles with extensions.
Kenku FM is a discord bot you kinda make, but basically use it as an application on your PC to play your local audio files to the call.
All in all, even I got them to work, they should be within the bounds of newcomers
owlbear rodeo looks awsome. any tips, how to manage all those things, a character bringst, like all the spells, passives, level ups and stuff?
Owlbear Rodeo is just a virtual tabletop for essentially just, images on each other. So you can see a map of grass, and who is where, and measure areas.
You'd use other things for character sheets, usually. My group uses DNDBeyond sheets, Owlbear Rodeo as a VTT, and use a Discord Call to talk on.
Dumb question, but is it bad I always end up becoming the party's "face" in the games I've played?
Mind you, I've only really played one shots with newbies, and I am myself a newbie.
But I am worried that I am gonna become a problem player who steals the spotlight.
You're aware of the potential issue which is a massive step in avoiding the issue of that issue happening.
You can just say "It looks like I'm the party's face character... Just so yall know, I don't necessarily want to hog the spotlight." and ask people how they feel, do they feel spotlight-robbed?
That's fair. The problem with newbies is everyone seems like they are unsure and want to follow a leader.
But I should ask other players if they're okay, and if they want more time in the spotlight
damnn it's the next day after out first session and i just gathered 8 people that would want to play is it fine to play a campaign for 3-5 players in 7? (one will be a DM) i guess it could streach a bit but not like we are damaging the experience right?
do you mean experience as in leveling up or the experience as in because too many people?
most DM's will know how to pivot for an extra player or two... the only problem I do see is it can slow the game up some
doesn't everybody get xp for a killed monster?
off you made me question myself
we went with XP 🤷
If I buy any of the DnD Beyond books do I get access to the races/classes that come with it?
weren't sure about milestone since we (including dm) played for the first time
yes
Sweet!
have to buy the digital form of the book though, Braver
I prefer using the milestone, it's easier to keep up with... like you finished this one section of the cmpaign so now you all level up
Milestone easier for new dms to keep track of, it's like ok they get to x point in story level up
are you all using a module for the campaign?
can they be mixed? for example i could play in another group that uses milestons and i lv up and just keep the xp? and could our Dm even if we use xp say that we found something or whatever and everyone levels up?
that would be up to your DM but usually it's one or the other
you want to keep all the players at the same level, at least I do
is that on the official DnD Beyond page?
yeah, you can buy the digital books in the DnD Beyond marketplace
Generally your character will be unique to a given campaign. You wouldn't be able to bring a character from one game to another with all their achievements and progress retained (Adventurers League would be the common exception).
Correct
ok so i choose the "digital" option right?
yep
in the marketplace above add to cart it will give you the purchase options... digital+physical, digital or physical
just make sure you clicked digital
uuuuugh i hate that you cant post screenshots
you can DM me the pic if you want
ok gimme a moment

Not BG3 though since I doubt my crusty ass computer can run it.

Have you tried Solasta? Good DnD 5e PC and console game
Solasta is a good DnD game, definitely lower budget than BG3 but still good.
Jinx. #dnd-media message
I've heard of Icewind Dale being decent, and people also enjoy Neverwinter Nights. Idk if you played these yet.
And ofc the first 2 BG games have modern remasters
im trying to run my first session zero with three new players, and I was wondering if anyone has any links to free rules thatll be in the 2024 phb that I could use to help my three new players
lol my bad should of checked what everyone said in that channel
These are the free 2024 rules. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I believe all classes will be available after the PHB's full release.
ah thats annoying they r limited
I believe DnD beyond has some of the rules posted now but won’t have the full rules until the 17th
Do any of your players have the PHB can share content if they have master tier
Well the PHB is a $30 book, they can't just give that for free
wish i had money ngl
Honestly though I have the PHB and such but I’m waiting to switch to 2024 until the DMG and MM and beyond works some of the kinks out
And what they offer for free is actually really good
At least for the 2014 stuff
You're only limited in subclasses and feats
You have everything else
Realistically speaking, the free content in the base rules is a lot.
To put it into context, if you level up at the end each session and each session 3 hours then you'll have 60 hours of play time going through all 20 levels for one class and subclass.

Okay, thanks
Hello, if you buy the rule books in physical form, there's no way of getting them in paperless form on dnd beyond ?
You would need to buy the physical + digital bundle.
Looking at the market place:
The Digital edition is only $10 when you choose Digital + Physical bundle.
how do i play dnd brah
#learn-to-play check out the various links in this channel.
If you have some questions after that, please ask questions
ok too much stuff,, i lost my dnd phase just by looking at it .. ..
maybe next year ill commit to it,, bye
my suggestion if the reading seems like too much you can always watch people play. then when you feel like you have the idea jump in. As a new player I learn something new everyday but at first the reading didn't seem fun, now I can't stop
like someone please help I can't stop
the first session was scary but the community here is awesome, most people want to teach you and everyone has a different learning style
jump in, its worth it
they even have one shot one on one's. Just you and the DM on an adventure teaching you the mechanics
its just a lot to remember and i probably wont since i have to get ready for gsces and all that stuff.. and even if i do decide to watch or something its definetly going to be awkard (i'll probably not learn anything))
that sounnds very awkward.
I won't lie, sometimes it is, then you meet someone who does a Orc voice or really gets into character and that all fades away. Some players don't role play, some do, just depends on how you want to play. I currently am listening to pop music in pirate theme to get into character, would I be a little embarrassed if someone from work saw me, maybe? But here you get to be and play the way you want. I get the awkward, believe me but the landing after the jump was well worth it, hope to see you around
Hello, I'm new to playing DnD. I do know some stuff sense I've been watching and hearing dnd videos but I have no idea how to use stuff like dnd beyon or where to sign up for a campain.
Hey I just joined the server! I’m trying to start my first game of dnd
Hey! If you guys both scroll up a bit there is a bot drop that will point you in the right direction. I would go with all the free stuff on Beyond before buying anything but they have a lot of great free tools
the #find-a-game would be another place to start if you have the basics down
thank you
Thank you!

Hey! I'm new to dnd and I need a DM so if you wanna DM please text me!
Check #looking-for-players 🙂
Thank you!
Your best approach is look into one shots, community campaigns such as West Marches & Adventures League , and other events that cater to new players.
Ohh okay I see
So far, do you know what parts of dnd you gravitate towards?
I have this idea if you wanna hear it in dms
i just have no idea where to start, i adore the idea of making up a world ect ect but actually getting into it drains me.. but thank u for the advice anyway
It’s fine to mention it here.
My point is simply to seek out many different types of one shots as it allows you to try many different things in a shorter amount of time.
For example, play a variety of adventures where combat difficulty is different for each one.
Oh okay! I'll mention it here then!
So I wasn't looking for a one shot I was looking for someone to dm ny own dnd campaign I made up basically
The name of the dnd campaign is The Medevlian School For Gifted Students :3
I played 1, one shot but never played dnd again until now that's why I'm still kinda new to dnd 😅
You probably want to post in #looking-for-dm following the guidance in #find-a-game, but be warned your use case is not the typical one honestly
Hi guys, I am new here. I know it was probably asked a million times already but I was wondering if it will be possible to create a Eladrin Druid that follows the Circle of Wildfire in the 5.5e?
How do i post?
Read #find-a-game carefully
You’ll be hard pressed to find a Dungeon Master that will want host a campaign that you made as opposed to one they’ll want to make and run themselves.
Your best bet will be to run such a campaign yourself or to find an adventure book that is a closest to that type of adventure. As there are adventure books that DMs enjoy running.
Oh okay I see
If you’re referring the the new 2024 players handbook, the answer is yes as it still DnD 5th edition. Even with the 2014 any race/species can work with any class.
Cool, thank you for the answer 🙂
what is paid looking for game what does the paid mean
You have to pay to get a dm
which one do i click on to find a game with a dm already
or do i have to pay to play at all times
Looking for DM ig?
I'm sure that's not it, cause otherwise the server would kinda lose it's purpose
true
Looking for DM is for players to advertise themselves to see if a DM wants to fit them into their game
Paid looking for game is for people to look for a professional DM to provide a game for them that is better on average and usually have more experience
Payment varies, sometimes it’s per month, per session, per year
That kinda stuff
So for @elfin sun looking for players would be the move right?
Since that's how you just join a campaign

Other options
Genuinely scared me ngl
Probably, he can find a DM who fits his criteria and see if he fits the DMs criteria as well
Unless he wants to pay
Yep, cheers you helped me as well
Glad I could help
im way too awkward to play dnd on a call,, is there any type of game modes that uses writing
Play by Post is what you are looking for. Asynchronous text based
thank you
Your best bet is going to be play by post games hosted on dnd beyond.
Take the time to read the PbP Rules and FAQ, first: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post/2069-pbp-rules-and-faq-please-read-first

Question, what are the limits to leveling up?
Like do I just stop at lvl 15 or smth like that?
The maximum is 20
Max level is 20. The method of leveling up is either through XP or milestone. This is dependent on the campaign you’ll be playing.
Hello
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and check out Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). Those should help get you started. There are a bunch of other resources as you encounter new challenges as well.
what is a short and long rest in battle—??
You cannot do either of those in battle. A short rest allows for half of your total hit pints to recover as well as some abilities and spells lots. A long rest replenishes everything
Good evening,
Just joined and thought I'd start by saying hello 😄
Hello 👋🏼
is there a limit on how many short rests you can take before you need to long rest?
There's no limit to how many short rests a character can take during an adventuring day. A short rest is a period of downtime that lasts at least one hour, during which a character can eat, drink, read, and tend to wounds. That being said, your DM might have an opinion if you start to abuse this by making it unsafe for you to rest.
as an addendum to this, most groups won't take more than 1-3 short rests a day, although if you're in a dungeon or other dangerous place, it makes rests more dangerous
thanks, i was just curious.
1-3 usually
hello!! I have never played d&d before so please be patient with me!!
So I've looked a bit around on dndbeyond and roll20, but I feel a lot of options aren't there, is it very uncommon, wanting to make a kobold as my char?

Only stuff in the free basic rules/SRD is available for free - for other character options, rules, etc. you or someone in your group needs to buy the books to have access to that.
That does make a lot of sense to be honest
I'm trying to get in to dm'ing and I'm wondering what books i should get
you need to buy the book that the kobold is apart of. unfortunately WOTC removed the ability to buy individual items (I can not fathom why, they basically stopped me dead in my tracks from buying anything)
I'm not sure I'm following, don't I just need to get the book with monsters to add kobold?
i beleive kobolds are in "Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse"
Oh you mean individual as in down to the specific race I take it?
Yes if you want to unlock the race. but just a few weeks/months ago you Used to have the ability to buy select items from books... instead of buying a $30 book you used to be able to buy just a race/species for like $2. but sadly they removed that feature
Ah right!
Well... I'm a 40k player too, so $30 seems okay xD
I made somewhat of a character I just have no clue what long rests short rests are, what moves to give them.. wtf a druid does
ah well then good luck haha
long and short rests are breaks that your party will take and are the main way you get back expended abilities.
For example, Sorcerers and Warlocks get a lot of abilities back on both short and long rests, while other classes like Paladins only get a few abiltities back on short rests.
i just started in march and was enjoying spending small amounts of money here and there to collect races and feats etc... only found out they removed it when i went to buy the Owlin race (which i think is the last one i dont own) and it was trying to force me to buy the whole book. havent bought anything since then.
any one got some dm tips?
Additionally, rests are used to naturally restore hit points, a long rest will restore all of your hit points back up to maximum, granted that you aren't interrupted. To regain hit points on a short rest you have to spend hit dice which are also refunded on long rests.
depends what kind of advise you're lookin for
wait is this what those little boxes are for on dndbeyond when you click on a short rest?
general dm'ing tips
thank you
yessir
I completely understand you, that does seem like nicer options, but I guess its business 🙂
well defintely talk to your players is the main thing I'd emphasize. make sure you're having fun just as much as they are. A session 0 is also a fantastic way to start if you already have a group. It lets you all lay out your expectations for the game, what kind of game you all want to play, the setting, any interpersonal character stuff, etc.
so for example my paladin character from March says 1d10+2 total:3 so does that mean i can take as many short rest as possible before a long rest but can only take 1d10+2 three times or 3d10+2 one times before i can no longer heal during short rests?
what level are you in this game
3
ok, so if you're a level 3 paladin, that means you will have 3d10's. these are your hit dice and during a short rest you can choose to use any number of them. You'll roll the hit dice you want to use, then add (I think) your constitution modifier to the total and regain that much HP. Once you've used all your hit dice you can't use any more until you finish a long rest which will restore them.
OOOH OK yeah we definitely did this wrong lol.
it was all our first time, including DM but it we had a blast. We will def adjust whenever we play next haha
sounds good, glad to be of help. Any other questions?
nah thanks for the help tho!
no problem!
Guys do we start at level 1 and level up during a story or do we stay at one certain level at the start
depends, I am starting a campaign at lvl 1 but I joined a group at lvl 6. I also joined a text based version that started at lvl 4 but I think for the most part you level up unless the DM tells you otherwise

As many as your class/species/etc give you
Okay dokay thanks
If it’s a multi class campaign, can I just multi subclass?
Like glory pal and conquest pal?
The normal rules don't allow for that
Nope
For new players, it's best to avoid multi-classing until you understand the core D&D rules. Otherwise, you might end up with a character who isn't good at either class's strengths.
Good point, ima wait till I do a real campaign
I just been playing with dnd beyond
How do materials work for spells? Every spell has them but all the campaigns I’ve watched I don’t think they ever been mentioned
If a spell requires material components, you have to satisfy that requirement in one of three ways:
- Provide the item itself. (This is the only option if the item has a listed gold price or if it’s consumed by casting the spell.)
- Have a component pouch (a bag that holds all the items you’d need to cast spells). You need a free hand to access the pouch when casting.
- Use a spellcasting focus permitted by your class. You need to have the focus in hand unless the focus itself says otherwise.
So is the focus like a staff. And you can cast spells as long as you have the staff but if you lose the staff you need the materials.
Pretty much!
And then there are ones which say it needs to be worth at least X money
or ones that say they are consumed by the spell
(or both! usually consumed things are also costly, to my recollection)
In those cases, you always need to provide that, no replacing it with a basic staff or wand or whatever, each time you cast it.
Revivify, for example:
a diamond worth 300+ GP, which the spell consumes
You’d need the actual diamond (since it has a stated cost), and you lose it once the spell is cast (because it’s consumed).
Mhm
Whereas Minor Illusion just requires some fleece. The fleece of a minor illusion is assumed to be part of a component pouch you have. The costly diamond is not.
The fleece of a minor illusion, as it isn't stated to be costly or consumed, can also just be replaced by a focus.
Also bear in mind that a spellcasting focus won’t work for any spell without material components.
And if a spell has both material and somatic components, you can use the same hand for both.
Hey so I’m new as shit like never played before it I’ve had an interest in playing it for a couple years now I know a little bit like some classes and seen the newest movie (although Ik it really doesn’t have anything to do with the game) but I don’t know where to get started I went to my local game shop but they don’t really do newcomer games so I came here to see if y’all did some newcomer games or could help me learn the ropes
What do you mean by this?
a spell that's just V, S, or V+S, these three combos have no M, so you don't need a focus for them
except artificers
It’s not just that you don’t need one. You can’t use one for those combos.
Yeah, you don't need it for those combos, it can't be jammed into one of those combos.
A spellcasting focus works only for spells with material components.
Ahh ok I think I get it thanks
I have never played DND before, so forgive me if I have stupid questions
are there guns in dnd?
Dnd has multiple settings, some have guns
You can also reskin a crossbow to a gun if your dm is fine with it, it's a game where you play make believe, you can do anything
Pistol and musket but very setting\Dm dependant
that's cool, just wonderin' if a cowboy would be feesable
with like a revolver and such
I wonder if potion tipped/filled bullets would be possible lol
There is a hand crossbow that you can dual wield like the demon hunter from diablo 3, you can reskin that to guns if your DM is fine with it
There are some in universe believable sources for guns too, some gnomes are inventors, deal with explosives and stuff
Also
The artificer class has been made for a more modern setting but is generally accepted everywhere and specifically mention guns
And modify equipments
ooh fun!
Hello happy people . Is there anyway I can join a upcoming online campaign ?
Check #looking-for-players 🙂
hi! if i were to discuss a character idea, where does that go?
thank you!
This advice is good: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet
My own list is here: #dnd-newcomers message
You can also search the server using “dm advice” and/or “dm tips” as keywords. You'll find plenty of good suggestions!
hi guys i need help can someone help me pless
That’s what this channel is here for. Feel free to just ask your questions, rather than asking for permission to ask
we r playing the game and we have problm betwen the dm and one of the players the player want 2 make a sorceres charctar that havent learend magic in tower the dm says that every charctar of sorcerers have learend only in tower and havent left tower unless in an old age which one of them is right bec it becomming an anoyying thing sry for my bad english btw
Well, the issue is that Wizards are the kind of spellcaster that does things via study.
Sorcerers are just innately magical, and that magic in them wants to be cast.
In the normal lore of D&D, sorcerers are naturally gifted with magic from their bloodline and don’t learn it in a tower or magic school of any kind.
HOWEVER part of the DM’s job is to create the lore for their setting and establish its rules. So if they say all sorcerers learn magic one specific way, then that would be true in this DM’s world, even if it’s not true in any other D&D game.
thanks alot for the fast answer i love ur community so much its a nice community with nicer people thanks alot guys lv u from the heart < 3
srry for this but i need u if u have time and i need 2 add u 2 our group just 2 help ending this disagremnt if u can if u cant i understand
u allready helpedalot just by ansering this
I am currently on my way to work for the day, so I can’t join your group unfortunately. If it’s any additional help, I will say that typically when a DM want to do something very different from the normal lore of D&D like this, it’s important to discuss it before you start playing. We typically call this discussion “session 0.” Because while it is the DM’s right to create the rules and lore of their setting, they shouldn’t surprise any of their players with it, and if it doesn’t match up with what they player wants from their character, this could obviously lead to issues, as you can see.
If I might make 1 suggestion, perhaps the DM could allow this character to be someone special, who learned magic in a different way than everyone else in their world. That could lead to some interesting story development. But that’s just an idea I had. They don’t have to allow that. Having a clear and open discussion is the most important thing
act this solve everything and disgreeing with ur suggestion would b wasting of our time that would solve the whloe problem thanks alot agine tut brother hope u l have a great day
Hello everyone, so I'm a fairly new to DnD I've played small one shots here and there over the past 20 or so years but I have twins (10yr olds) and they wanted to play so I've taken the initiative to start a homebrew campaign and am wondering if anyone had a favorite site or anything for keeping story beats or help with music maps things like that. We have played 4 sessions including session 0 it's gone great so far but I want to keep building the world and have all my thoughts and ideas in a better spot then 2 spiral note books lol. Was thinking about posting this in hombrew but wasn't sure
It's a better question for #dm-discussion. I know Obsidian.md, World Anvil, and Kanka.io are common recommendations for campaign management!
I'll post it there thank you! And I'll look into all of those and see what sticks
Good morning all, I am very new to the community and DnD in general! I am curious where or how to start to learn the game? I did create a character on DnD Beyond but don't know where to go from here. Is it best to try and start playing to try and understand everything? If there are any recommendations that would be amazing and I apologize if these are silly questions

It genuinely depends on how you begin playing. Are you hoping to join a bunch of strangers? Then you increase your odds (and reduce the burden on them) by doing your best to learn as much as possible. Read the rules and #learn-to-play. Watch/listen to some recorded games. Watch explainer videos like Handbooker Helper or WASD20's Rules School. Join a tutorial session at your local library, game store, or via the virtual weekends (see the server's Events tab).
If you're playing with friends, though, then you can learn together, and if you make mistakes, well, that's part of the experience. It should be fun regardless!
Thank you for this and that makes sense. I really have no one to play with that I know personally, so I will try all of the above that you suggested and can hopefully join a campaign with some people who are willing to take on someone new
Some folks do advertise they're open to new folks, but plenty don't. I would recommend asking if they're open to new players, especially if a particular game sounds interesting to you.
Hello! How may I be able to find a group in these trying times? 👀
If you want to expand your search beyond this server, I collected a number of avenues into one handy document: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view

How does dual weapon fighting work?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#TwoWeaponFighting
When you take the Attack action and attack with a light melee weapon that you're holding in one hand, you can use a bonus action to attack with a different light melee weapon that you're holding in the other hand. You don't add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack, unless that modifier is negative.
If either weapon has the thrown property, you can throw the weapon, instead of making a melee attack with it.
that too
At least for 2014 first:
Example: You are a level 1 rogue, with a Dexterity score of 16 (giving a modifier of +3).
You attack with a Shortsword, for +5 to hit, doing 1d6+3 damage if you hit. You can then Bonus Action attack with - let's say another Shortsword - with +5 to hit, but it does 1d6 damage, no +3.
2024 edition:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/equipment#Light
When you take the Attack action on your turn and attack with a Light weapon, you can make one extra attack as a Bonus Action later on the same turn. That extra attack must be made with a different Light weapon, and you don’t add your ability modifier to the extra attack’s damage unless that modifier is negative. For example, you can attack with a Shortsword in one hand and a Dagger in the other using the Attack action and a Bonus Action, but you don’t add your Strength or Dexterity modifier to the damage roll of the Bonus Action unless that modifier is negative.
It's basically identical, (phew) just been moved around, now is part of light instead of being two things referencing each other.
So I can either attack with one rapier and do 1d8 piercing damage + 3 (dexterity modifier)
Or attack with two daggers, making 1d4 piercing damage +3 + 1d4 piercing damage?
- You can hold any two one-handed weapons and attack with either one.
- If you have Extra Attack, you could use each weapon once, or either weapon twice.
- If both weapons are light weapons, you can also take the bonus action described above.
I think you've got it!
But yes, the rapier attack is just your action, but the dagger is your action and the second dagger is your bonus action.
Also, there's no "off hand" thing in D&D, before you ask 😅
?
Oh wait, a rapier is only finesse, can I use a rapier and a dagger?
"Off hand" is popular colloqualism for two-weapon fighting, to describe the weapon used for that bonus action.
But it's misleading because your actual hands don't matter.
If you attack with your right first, then use the left for the BA, the left takes the penalty.
If you attack with your left first, then use the right for the BA, the right takes the penalty.
And you can reverse order whenever you like.
Finesse just lets you use Str or Dex, your choice.
Light is what lets you get the special extra jab in
A rapier doesn't normally qualify for Two-Weapon Fighting since it does indeed lack the Light property.
So the light needs to be in to be able to dual wield?
The Dual Wielder Feat removes the requirement for Light weapons, and would allow you to use a rapier.
Can a Rogue have that?
Otherwise, both weapons need to have the Light property in order to do this dual-attacking thing.
No way fr??
It's just a feat anyone can take, so yes, you can attain it as you reach higher levels
Ohhh ok
I meant at lvl 1
In the 2014 rules, there's a couple race choices that would let you start with that feat.
You need to take it as a Feat, when you're at a level granting you a feat
In the 2024 rules, you need to be at least level 4.
2014 dual wielder is just, a feat, anyone can take it as a feat, when they get a feat.
2024 dual wielder needs you to be level 4 or higher, and have your Str or Dex score be 13 or higher.
However, 2024 dual wielder has to start with a light weapon, but can let you stab with a Rapier still, for example.
Okkk thanks

With the rogue's expertise, can I make a skill have a +10 bonus at level 1?
If I have proficiency (+2), it depends on dexterity (+3), and with the Expertise the bonus is doubled, wouldn't that make It 10?
+5 from your ability score, and +2 * 2 from your proficiency bonus and expertise.
No
Re-read the ability, expertise only doubles your PB
Only your proficiency bonus is doubled, not your ability score modifier.
Ohhhhhhh
Expertise only doubles your proficiency bonus, not the whole modifier
Ohhhhhhh
So instead of 2 is 4
Yep
Yeah seemed too op, thanks 👍
So if your ability score modifier is +3, you'd have a total of +7.
yeah expertise is great
yesterday i bought some dice and tomorrow my paladin will be printed
cant wait for my gf to paint it 😂
so I am literally new in D&D, what should i do first, create character or?
There's no right or wrong answer there. Creating a character is as good a place to start as any.
#learn-to-play has some additional info that can help you get started.
big thans man, do you recommend any website for playing D&D online?
roll20 and Dndbeyond are 2 most popular 🤷
you can have both i think you can conect them together
There's no official connection between those two, but there are some third-party extensions for it.
Looking for games or actually playing the game?
well im lookin for game master I guess, to answer your question, I wanna play the game
There’s a channel here for DMs looking for players
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008
That’s how I play, along with owlbear rodeo virtual tabletop.
what's that?
oh like a hub
Basically a website-based system where you can have a map with character tokens on it, so you have a way of visually representing the game. It can get fancier, like integrating the rules of DND, dice rolling, etc
actually cool. I did that, if in the future you decide to play let me know
If you check out the channel I linked above there are quite a few games that get posted, so you can probably find one fairly quickly. My games are full at the moment
Thanks. have a great day mate
You too! Have fun playing 🙂
hello i was wondering if some one could help me make a person
Wizard, human and I kind of have a back story but still in the works on that part I just don't understand the sheet thing
Where are you stuck?
The chapter here does a really good job of walking through the character sheet.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
I guess it's more I just want to make sure I'm doing it right than anything like I make the character sheet then I look at it and I just feel like it's wrong
You're welcome to share a link in #character-discussion if you want someone to look it over.
Ok
guys my friend is making a character for him self and is asking about the numbers on the left i think its just if you want to take a random one right?
and also if she is an elf she should know elvish form the start or no?
By the numbers on the left do you mean the stats section of the character sheet?
no no no on the dndbeyond when you choose a language
1d12 and there are numbers for each one
Ah yeah then
and what about knowing elvish
And she doesn’t need to know elvish if she doesn’t think her character would or she doesn’t want her character to know elvish
but she send me a screen where she doens't have it on the "choose a language"
If she’s using 2014 elf w/o using TCE’s origin rules then yeah she’s forced to take common and elvish
It's already built in so not showing as an option.
okay thanks!
What's the best tool for a charlatan, colored liquid, tricked dice, marked cards, or the signet ring of a fake noble?
There's no "best" option, just whatever you think your character would have or could benefit from
These tools exist purely as a way to facilitate role play, and have no actual mechanical use or benefit. They might be useful in the story or plot of your game, or they might be used for problem solving or making money, but they don't have a tangible mechanical effect that you can point to and evaluate. It just comes down to what you think is the most fitting for your character, and what you think you will be able to use the most effectively

D&D is not a video game. There is no queue for you to join or button you can press to start/join a game. Playing D&D is as simple and as complex as getting a group of people together in person or online, and simply agreeing to play D&D together at a certain time.
FYI dnd isn’t like an mmo it can take a while to find a game
These are the steps for the 2024 rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules/creating-a-character
If you are brand-spankin new to D&D I think the best place to start and learn is find a one shot and talk to the DM about what you want to play like and accept the best sounding premade character. You might feel overwhelmed by from-scratch character creation, or the concept of commiting to a campaign sight unseen. Hands on is an excellent way to learn.

What rolls have you done so far? If it’s for stats, i recommend using PB or Standard Array instead as it’s more likely to be accepted by the average DM (usually rolled stats are done in front of the DM as an anti-cheating measure)
The Basic Rules Chapters 1-6 walk you through character creation. If you use a digital sheet like on D&DBeyond, the character creator will fill it out for you
can anyone help me with my campaign???
i am a new DM and have my very first session 2 months from now. i decided that i will make my own campaign but need help reviewing it

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The bot posts above should be able help you get started.
the bot will help me review my campaign???
I know a bit about this but this fits better in #third-party I'd recon

Awe you poor thing. I’ve watched Legends of Avantris so I kinda know bits and pieces.
I’m trying to get stuff on paper so maybe I can find people to play with
Maybe look up a tutorial on YouTube!? That might help. I wish I could help you but I’m pretty new myself.
That might work
Sure do you have a character sheet infront of you or do you need one?
I’ve only watched a campaign but never participated in one, but I really want to.
@glass mesa I need one
I suggest you look up Handbookerhelper by Matt Mercer
Alrighty
Matt Mercer is amazing!
@random galleon what should I do for a sheet?
DnDBeyond is a pretty good app for creating a starter character... it walks you through the process step by step, at least for the free public rules
in the end it'll produce a full printable and copyable character sheet for you
You need to know your race, class, starting level and starting equipment.

@random galleon ok while I’m watching these should I try to find people to play with to figure out my starting level?
Yes #find-a-game explains how to find a game
@random galleon are you currently in a campaign?
No can't help you there

@random galleon ok thanks for your help
Iam in need of a deep help
Elaborate?
I have know nothing but some of thT guy who palay wired game with his friends on youtube
So like how thing work
My eyes
K
Just learning myself. My daughter got into it but her group fell apart so I'm going to be acting DM. I've never played before.
To be a player? Ofc not
I can't understand you with that sentence. I'm sorry but I do not know what you want.
If you're not planning to run the game, you probably shouldn't use #looking-for-players
You can post in #looking-for-dm but I'd generally also recommend reaching out in posts on the LFP channel too
There are significantly more players than DMs so it's best to be proactive
So I get a dm than look for players right
The DM may already have other players
I have an important question
Tarraques have spikes on their back, right?
So which monster is considered a predator to a tarrasque
Nothing afaik. I think that's kind of the point
i wanna do a human rogue (bc im not 3' 1" irl) is that a good combo or should i just swallow my pride and go halfling?
Nothing wrong with human rogues
Hey everyone I just joined, I’m kind of interested in learning more about dnd because I’ve never played before, I’m actually taking more of an interest into fantasy like that in general
Could I use cutting word on my teammates?
technically yes but i’d advise against it
Perfect, when I get a campaign ima use vicious mockery on my barbarian to get him to rage
It’s gonna be fun
oh damn, smart idea
you could use custom lineage if you want at least some of the benefits of being a Halfling. Alternatively you could just flavour your character as a human raised among halflings, explaining why you’d get their features instead of a humans
@rough wyvern ok thx
that doesn't make a barbarian rage though.. you're just damaging your teammate and giving them disadvantage on their attack.
i might be miss-remembering things but isnt there a barb subclass where they gain more rage the more damage?
none that I can recall. None of the 2024 Subclasses have a feature like that for sure.
hi im new to dnd and im trying to find a party/group to play with that will help me learn the game
Hello, and welcome! #learn-to-play is a great place to learn the rules, while #find-a-game is this server's way of getting players together
In my experience, unless a listing says otherwise, any table you see advertising an open position will be totally cool with taking on a new player. Just be transparent about being new, and be open to learning

im new to dnd and no clue what im doing would love to be taught cause im really interested in dnd
hey yall. im making a rogue buuuuut im notr really into daggers and want to use some sort of finess sword like scimitar. can i still dual scimitars or would i have to multicalss or should i just use daggers? im pretty chill with any of those. just dont wanna make my own decisons 😝
yo saaaaaaaammmmeee
I don't think rogues are proficient with scimitars normally, but you could do the same thing with shortswords
Don't think you can post images in this channel
We can't post images here. You can link images though.
k nvm the thx
oh one more thing. as i was making my character and picking starter equiptment on dnd beyond there wer like +3 daggers which was crazy. are those allowed as a lv 1 starter?
Highly unlikely
You'll generally want to stick with the starting equipment per the rules unless your DM tells you otherwise
👍
also if i pick my short sword proiciencywhat do u recommend as my 2nd
or should i just do tried and true dagger and shortbow
Generally nice to have a ranged weapno option
cool. is there a way for me to import my character sheet so someone can check it or something. my first character. i want him made right.
Hello I'm new my name is sam
yeah if you want to toggle the privacy setting on the sheet from Private to Public and just post the link in #character-discussion you'll be sure to get some feedback

Welcome to the club 😂
Question, can I make a dragonborne that’s short like a kolbald but still use a breath weapon?
Prob like you could just have a like 4 foot tall Dragonborn with a growth disorder
As long as your dm allows it

Hey yall
I was trying to add find familar to my character sheet but cant seem to find it on dndbeyond, is it something I can even add?
You can find that under the Extras tab. That’s where you can add familiars or beast companions, pets, etc.
Can I play dnd alone?
is it possible to create a companion without choosing one that is provided in the extras tab?
If you're just starting out, things like Solasta do a great job of showing you how it works, so you know how to get into it more easily! 🙂
(it can be difficult knowing if you're "doing the right thing the right way" in terms of mechanics etc if you're doing it alone)
Ty
Yes you could use DnDBeyonds homebrew tools to create homebrew creatures/monsters that can be selected.
Does any one have any reccomendations for physical spell cards I can buy? Idk how to even keep track of spells and remember what dice to roll with without something like this
That depends on the class(es) you play. The company makes cards for different spell lists and sources.
should i make a character before or after finding a game?
You can always make a 'practice' character before a game, or start working on an idea, but it generally is best to tailor a character to a game after you've learned more about it.
DMs might have houserules, or different ways to generate stats. And you can make sure your PC will work will with the group and campaign idea.
ok thank you 🙂

Hello
hello im basically new to dnd
Hello all, my friends and I want to start play DND and I will be the DM, may I know is the 2024 version is a better option for me to purchase compare to 2014 version? Also, is the new PHB itself enough for DMing the game? I don't want to buy the 2014 DMG and need to buy the 2024 version in the future. Thanks for helping.
I think the 2024 version does a much better job of teaching the rules.
But you're welcome to compare the free Basic Rules (2014) to the new Free Rules (2024) if you want to make a more informed decision.
As of right now, there's more content available in the Basic Rules, but more will be added to the Free Rules as the PHB, DMG, and MM are released.
When the PHB is released on September 17, for example, they'll be adding the remaining classes, plus more spells and feats.
Same, I just recently did a short introduction campaign with some friends but we won’t be continuing with each other since we live very far away
Helloo!
Heyo. Just joined myself
hi hi! I'm somewhat-beginner DM and I need some help setting up a campaign. I've been playing a lot of Tactical Breach Wizards recently and I really enjoyed the "current-day cop/investigator wizards with weak but versatile powers" shmick. Is DnD a versatile enough system for running this kind of campaign?
Hello
Welcome welcome!
Yes welcome
what is PHB and DMG and MM stand for
Sorry, those are the three core rulebooks for the game.
Players handbook dungeon masters guide and monster manual

I have a question about what 5e is exactly. Is it the standard rules to follow?
"5e" is a colloquial term referring to D&D fifth edition.
They've changed the rules for D&D a few times, which has created these separate editions.
It's the most recent rules but a new edition that's like a 5.5e is releasing in like a week
Fifth edition is the current one and the most widely played.
It's official name is dnd 2024
No, the official name is still fifth edition.
Not for the next edition
The revised core rulebooks releasing over the next few months (starting with the Player's Handbook next week) are still fifth edition.
Didn't realise it is still 5th
The game devs and WoTC have been pretty clear it's the same edition
hi
Hi
Hey there!
Okay so to join a campaign I need ti familiarize myself with the 5th edition rules

Having some idea of how a character sheet works and some of the core mechanics will help
Which is why we do suggest looking at the free basic rules
Some players play different editions though, I think the second most common is 3.5
It's certainly possible to join a campaign with no knowledge of D&D, especially if you've got a more experienced group to help you learn as you go.
And arguably, that's the best way to learn.
Buuuuuut...
Unless you've got a group already lined up, learning as much as you can about the game while you search can help increase your odds of getting accepted into a group.
Ultimately, there's no "right way" to get started.
Lots of people take lots of different paths.
I found it helpful to have both players who know what they're doing and having the core rulebooks. It was nice having rules officially explained and explained by players
May I know is the free rule like a part of the PHB?
Yep
Basically all the main rules, plus some of the character options.
For example, it includes one subclass for each class.
Whereas the full PHB has four each.
The full book gets you more subclasses, backgrounds, species, feats, and spells.
I see
Thanks for answering
I think I will wait for 2024 PHB and DMG, and use the free rules before these release
That's what I'd do. 👍
