ah
i sent you smthn that explains the build better than i could
There will be multiple generation methods offered in the rules, I recommend using either Standard Array or Point Buy. Rolling is usually only done in front of DMs as an anti-cheating measure
If you’re using D&DBeyond for character creation it should be an easy toggle in the creator. If you’re manually filling out a sheet and using Point Buy, I recommend looking up a 5e PB calculator for help
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
The bot post above elaborates on the three methods mentioned by StarOfTheLight
Hello! can someone please introduce me to D&D a bit? I am absolute beginner, just read about it a bit just a minute ago.
Well how much do you know about d&d?
Do power words only work if a target has 100 or less hp at full health or do they just need to have 100 or less at the moment one hits them?
Hello its my first time ever being a DM and actually my firstish time playing D&D and if anyone could explain things to me that would be wonderful cause my first session is in 6 days
pretty much nothing.
When the spell is cast, if the target has 100hp or less, the spell takes effect. Otherwise nothing, even if they eventually get low enough
No but I mean it as, if a stronger being is whittled down to 100 or less hp, would the spell work?
Thank you for clearing that up for me
Well basically then dungeons and dragons is a table top role playing game, the only thing you really need to play dungeons and dragons is some friends and anything to gauge outcomes (dice, spinner, coin flip, etc.). You can create character sheets to try and flesh out a character with stats, these will influence how likely an outcome will be for example if you are stronger (higher strength stat) you’ll be more likely to carry an o next than someone who isn’t. A good place to start making a character would be d&dbeyond as the character creation feature is a very easy to use. It also has a lot of explanations on the different stats and mechanics of the game on the website and built into it as well.
This is a basic explanation of the abilities you have as a character taken right from d&d beyond
ooo, interesting, imma try that. Thanks!
Awesome, I hope you enjoy playing the game!
I hope that too!
Also one piece of advice for you is that everyone is a group is on the same boat so never feel shy to let your hair down and role play your character if you want, no one would judge you and people who do are definitely not the ones you want to be playing with in the first place.
thanks, Ill keep that in mind and dont worry I am not shy on the internet, not usually atleast. o/
any help would be appreciated
Best of luck then and come back for any other clarification you might need
If you need help with npc’s that tag along with the group,I’d say get to know the groups players personalities and try to incorporate those into the npc evenly so the whole party is happy
And for voices just practice, like I practice all the time cause I’m still working on then, also don’t wait to start planning a campaign, jump on it and start ahead of time
well ive got all that just and ive been working on it for awhile i just need tips its my first time and its a homebrew so i wanna make sure i do it right
Brand new to DnD. I have an online group to play with and session zero is this Friday. I know some stuff about the game but I just want as many resources about the game I can get (I can’t afford the handbooks rn :/). Any and all help is greatly appreciated
Try not to be nervous,it’s ok if you make a little slip up here and there, just use that to learn, and you’ll still have fun!!
If you add me on discord I can make a campaign on dnd beyond and you can use the handful of books I do use
can you give me a checklist of the neccesary of the things i need cause im thinking im forgetting something
Have you read the basic rules yet?
Usually that’s the only thing 100% necessary. Everything else is varying degrees of optional
Your main story you planned, but be ready to improvise because stories never go to plan, and be creative, don’t limit yourself just to the story you planned, and overall just have fun and like I said it’s ok to slip up everyone has or will,so it’s okay😁
i got back up plan a through z like 5x over
Well remember,no matter how it goes,or if you think you didn’t do good,I want you to remember you did amazing and we’re all proud of you!!
Hey, looking to try dnd for the first time, I’ve made characters before but never got into any games
If you wanted to find a group using this server try reading the instructions in #find-a-game !
Idk if that would fall under someone just showing me the ropes but I’ll look, thanks
Did you need to learn the rules or just find a group?
If the former I recommend checking the pins as well as #learn-to-play which have links to the free basic rules and Handbooker Helper video supplement
Thank you star! You’ve been very helpful
Np!

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

Thank you
anyone handy with the Alchemy website/app
I am. Feel free to ask questions in #third-party
How do i find people to play with in person locally?
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Show that you took the time to read the posting by mentioning aspects of the campaign you find interesting.
- Tip: Show that DM fun isn't an afterthought by asking what makes the game fun for them.
- Check out #looking-for-community to find community-style games like West Marches, one-shots, and more
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
I think the best move might be to check out your local table top gaming cafe or store. They’ll likely have an adventurers league group that you can join and the DMs there will likely have other campaigns they host.
I'm getting so keen to play and keep learning but everyone that is willing to play is also rather new
HI, im VERY new to dnd, been wanting to play it for years and even make my own homebrew! would love to get to know the community and find friends. I know Absolutely Nothing about dnd besides what ive learned from baldur's gate 3.
So, I just finished a 2 year collegiate program and I suddenly have 20+ hours per week to dedicate to something fun.
how can I use Roll-20 to fill that time with joy?
This channel is for asking about getting started with D&D, if you have question about third-party tools, #third-party is the best place to ask
oh, thanks
Do you guys recommend following the material components rule for new players?
I'd have them first focus on spell slot management.
Materials can wait a bit although I'd suggest enforcing it for those spells that are significant and consume the material (e.g. resurrection).
But do whatever makes most sense and is fun for you and your game.
Kinda, yeah.
It comes down to two categories, Care and Don't Care.
Care: If it says "worth at least X money" or if it says consumed by the spell (or both). Examples being Revivify (costly, consumed), Identify (costly), and so on.
Don't Care: Anything else. The fleece of minor illusion, the silver wire of alarm, the bat guano of fireball. A component pouch is automatically assumed to have whatever non-costly stuff you need, and a focus as appropriate for one's class can replace them.
Breaking it down into these two "categories" helps a lot, I find.
So we should only worry about high level spells for material components?
No? Identify still needs its pearl, Revivify needs its diamond dust, and so on
ah ok
The only components you need to really track are costly ones, such as those (Identify is reusable, but an investment - Revivify is consumed, so 300gp worth of diamond dust is gone every time revivify is cast)
How would you come across the niche components in-game?
Usually buying them in a town. In a pinch, a DM could have them be among loot hoards.
Sometimes it's as simple as "While we're in town I buy a 100gp pearl and 300gp of diamond dust" and if the DM just says "OK" then they mark off their GP and mark that they have the identify pearl and one revivify casting's worth of diamond dust
Would it be best to tell the DM our spell's material components so they can add it to things like loot?
Might as well try.
gtg now thanks for the help :))
To attack I must choose an enemy, roll a d20 to see it hits, and if the number is bigger than the armor class of my enemy, I roll again for damage of my wepon, right?
(attacking without spells)
Yep.
You roll a d20, add your attack bonus (usually abbreviated as +# to hit), and if the result meets or beats the target's AC, you hit. On a hit, you do what the attack says happens on a hit, which is usually damage.
(and ofc considering the enemy is within reach)
It even goes for spells that call for attack rolls, like Fire Bolt, Shocking Grasp, or Eldritch Blast.
Wait wait, what do I add with the d20?
Oh ok
The attack bonus of the weapon?
If you're proficient with what you're using (like a Fighter proficient in all weapons, using, say, a Longsword), you would add your proficiency bonus. Then you add the appropriate ability modifier.
For melee weapons, Strength. For ranged weapons, Dexterity. If the weapon has the Finesse property, you choose either one.
For an attack from, say, Fire Bolt, it's your spell attack bonus as detailed in the class, so proficiency bonus and spellcasting ability modifier (like a Wizard's Intelligence or a Cleric's Wisdom)
Okay so
I have 16 strength (+3)
And a greataxe
(1d12 slash)
And im a dragonborn
So, I would have +5 attack bonus right?
dragonborn wouldn't have anything to do with it here
It would be +3 if you’re not proficient with greataxes, +5 if you were
For a level 1-4 character
I'm a soldier, im proficient in all martial weapons
Do you mean fighter?
Soldier is a background, not a class, but I assume you mean fighter
but if you were, say, a level 1 paladin, barbarian, or fighter (https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/classes)... You'd definitely have Proficiency with a greataxe. At levels 1 to 4, your proficiency bonus is +2.
With a +3 Strength Modifier, and a greataxe, you have a total of +5 for what the greataxe calls for.
So you are:
- A dragonborn fighter (with the Soldeir background) using a greataxe?
I have strength 16 (+3), and I want to attack with a greataxe (1d12 slash)
As a level 1 fighter I have +2 proficiency bonus, so I would have a +5 attack bonus right?
Yes
That would be correct yes
Okay so
So, with a greataxe, a level 1 to level 4 of those classes, with 16 Strength score giving a +3 Strength Modifier
You have +5 to hit and +3 to damage, on top of the dice you usually roll (like the d20 to hit, and the 1d12 damage of a greataxe)
Ok, you have proficiency with all weapons then, so it's a +3 from STR and a +2 from your proficiency bonus
When I roll a d20 to see if I hit, will I +5 the number it gives me?
Yes
No
yep. So in this case
We roll the d20, add 5, and check the result. If it meets or beats the target's AC, we hit. Since we're attacking with a greataxe, on a hit we deal 1d12 + Strength Modifier slashing damage. So, roll 1d12, add 3, you dealt that much damage.
Oh
You only add the +3 from STR
You add Strength Modifier and proficiency bonus to Hit (+5)
You just add Strength Modifier to damage (+3)
Ohhhhhh
As a rule of thumb, your proficiency bonus goes only on the roll to hit, nearly never on the roll for damage
See enemy
d20 +5 to try to hit
d12 +3 for extra damage
For example, this theoretical character, attacking a Bandit. The bandit has AC 12.
You roll a d20, add 5. If it's 12 or higher, you hit, so roll your 1d12+3 damage.
Got a number wrong
There
Think about it like this:
To Hit: d20 + ability mod + pb + any other mods (i.e. magic weapons)
Damage: weapon die + ability mod + any other mods (i.e. magic weapon)
That's correct?
Yeah
Yup
To be fair, it's high only at low levels
Yeah but I thought it was comparable to like, 5-10
5-10 AC?
Yeah (I was wrong)
Nah they’re very different haha
After creating the character im reading the combat rules and im learning attack rolls right now
Yea lol
In fact, statistically AC improvements get better the higher your old AC is
Oh cool
For example, the benefit from going from 20 to 21 AC is generally better than going from 10 to 11 AC
You can draw or stow 1 weapon on your turn for free
Nvm on that last bit that I deleted
Ok so
I need to test something
I'm in the streets, and one dude pulls a knife or smth and says he's going to kill me
1st, see who has higher initiative
Right?
(by rolling a d20 and + initiative)
The DM would generally call when initiative is rolled, but yes that is the first thing that would happen before combat starts
Okay
Initiative is a d20 + dex mod
Uhhhh
I roll and get a 17+1 and he gets a 4
So I attack first right?
Your turn is first, yeah
Okay, now can I do this in one turn:
- Take out greataxe
- Get close to him (he's like, 10 ft appart and I can move 30)
- Roll for hit
- Roll for damage
Yes, though I’ll breakdown how that would work in combat terms
Yes. I would add to 4. IF you hit
Yeah ofc
Lets go im understanding it 😭😭😭
-
You draw 1 weapon if you didn’t have it out already (this is a “free object interaction,” not an official term but commonly known)
-
You use your movement to get within reach of the enemy, typically the distance your weapon reaches (greataxe is 5 ft.)
-
You use your Action to take the Attack action. You then roll to hit the enemy.
-
If you hit, you roll your weapons damage.
Ok yeah I get it
But are you 100% sure the weapon damage roll only adds the proficiency bonus? Not the strengh one?
It's the opposite.
The weapon damage adds only the ability modifier
Oh
Maybe there are very niche cases in which you also add the proficiency bonus, but in general, the only thing added to damage is STR (or DEX for ranged or finesse weapons)
So to see if the attack lands
d20 +2 (My proficiency bonus)
And if it lands (the number is higher than the armor class)
1d12 (greataxe) +5 (proficiency bonus and strengh)
Oh
Is this true?
No, you do the opposite
Roll to see if you pass your enemy AC: 1d20 + ability modifier + proficiency bonus
Roll for damage (the one you do to see if you hit): the damage dice + ability modifier
Yeah
From this message, it seemed like you swapped the two things
To see if the attack lands
d20 +5 (My proficiency bonus and strengh)
And if it lands (the number is higher than the armor class)
1d12 (greataxe) +2 (proficiency bonus)
Yeah mb
Yeah, that's right
No problem 👍
To see if the attack lands
d20 +5 (My proficiency bonus and strengh)
And if it lands (the number is higher than the armor class)
1d12 (greataxe) +3 (str modifier)
What
But my strengh modifier is 3
The proficiency bonus doesn't count on damage rolls?
No only on attack rolls
Sorry, I read a 3 on the d12 😅
Yeah it's ok
But yeah, as the golden rule:
Your proficiency bonus goes ONLY on rolls to hit and ability checks in which you are proficient
(And also other things regarding spellcasting, but remember these two if you are playing a martial character)
Hello
Hey there im looking to getting into DND and playing online with other, need some help to figure out what to use and just other information THanks 😄
I couldn't help ngl😅 I joined yesterday myself
Visit #learn-to-play for everything you need to get started!
- [What is D&D?](#learn-to-play message)
- [How does it work?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Where do I join?](#learn-to-play message)
- [Frequently Asked Questions](#learn-to-play message)
Welcome! You can check the channel pins as well as #learn-to-play for a link to the free basic rules! I recommend watching the linked Handbooker Helper series by Critical Role which is a great supplement to the rules.
Don't worry about memorizing everything, but be familiar with character creation, combat, and skill checks. I also recommend making a character as you go along for rules practice. After that, try finding a game! In this server there's #find-a-game (read the instructions carefully!). You can also get feedback on your character in #character-discussion or #optimization depending on the nature of feedback you want. And of course, feel free to ask any additional questions here!
I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask but is it important to learn about the different editions, like 5e, 4e and etc?
If you wanted some links to online tools (esp for online play), here’s what I recommend:
- A Digital Sheet Hoster such as D&DBeyond or roll20
- A Virtual Tabletop (VTT) like roll20, Owlbear Rodeo, or FoundryVTT
- A digital dice roller (commonly integrated in the previous 2)
- A communications app, such as discord

No not really unless you plan to play those versions. They’re generally incompatible with each other on a systemic level. I’d compare the transition between editions to the transition from GTA 2 to GTA 3 or Fallout 2 to Fallout 3; same DNA, but wayyy different everything else.
I’d just focus on 5e as it’s the most current and popular edition, as well as the easiest to learn.
The current game and one that is discussed here is 5th Edition. Older versions are discussed in #dnd-elder-editions .
Cheers!
what would you reccomend between dnd beyon and roll20
I use both, personally, along with a plug-in that integrates my DDB sheets into the roll20 website
So they do different things although with some overlap.
DnDBeyond provides a digital toolset to help with playing D&D: digital character sheets and digital dice, shared dice log (DnDBeyond campaigns), content sharing if one of the folks in a DnDBeyond campaign has a Master tier subscription and has eneabled content sharing on a DnDBeyond campaign, ability to purchase and view digital versions of the books, other tools like encounter builder, and a simple token and maps tool (Maps), and Avrae (a D&D Discord bot which can connect to your DnDBeyond content).
Roll20 is primarily a Virtual Tabletop (VTT) that provides an area for a group to view maps and tokens. It has a shared chat area where dice rolls can be shown and other features. It also has other features as well - but again it's primary purpose is as a Virtual Tabletop.
Roll20 also allows you to include multiple game rulesystems if I'm not mistaken. But those cost additional money.
Thankyou for this imformation it has been helpful, i think ill use dndbeyond for my character sheet and i guess which ever vtt the dm uses
what would be the best way to find games to play
which is?
It's content (rules, monsters, subclasses, magic items etc) made by the people who are playing the game
Ie it's "brewed" at home
oh ok
There are three broad classes of D&D content
Official (1st party) - Content made by Wizards of the Coast, the people who make the game
Homebrew (2nd party) - Content made by the people who play the game
3rd party - Content made by companies other than Wizards of the Coast
Have you read the basic rules?
maybe i should do that
Check out #learn-to-play, that should guide you through getting started
Hello everybody! I wanted to get into dm ing (no, not dm ing minors) but i would like to see how a real dm does his job first. I am oprn to tips and tricks and etc etc
An epic way to learn that imo would be youtube
Keep it simple run a few one shots
Don’t add homebrew stuff
Tell a fun story and don’t worry if you make mistakes
are there any websites online where i can read the 2014s Players handbook ?
Like JRWI and crispy's tavern
Not without buying the book or being in a campaign that shares it. You can access the free basic rules though which is enough to get folks started and all you need to start playing D&D: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
alr
im just a human with a great sword and uh health stuff
oh, then you should be fine with the free basic handbook
As in does your PC (player character) need to be male, or as in do you need to make a PC now?
make one now
You can make one whenever you feel comfortable, or wait until you join a game to make one. No pressure either way
in what sense? like to play with? yes and no, some DMs prefer that you make your character with them on the first session, some will let you bring a character in premade.
You can make a practice PC before joining a group if you like, and might be able to use them in the game, but it's usually a good idea to make a new PC specifically for a game you've joined, after you've talked to the DM about the game and discussed it with the group. That way you can tailor them to the game.
is there a way to play by urself and try to just try it out ?
Is that also true for one-shots?
It can be, though in my experience OS are usually more relaxed about bringing in premades
I think it just depends
D&D is a cooperative game. There are some solo modules on DMsguild, but they act more like choose your own adventures + board game mechanics than D&D properly.
So, is it always fine if you join a group without a pre-made?
oh ok
I think so! In my experience usually you’d bring a rough concept or two (or three..) of characters you’d like to play and then finalize/make the character after joining the game
I think it just depends on the DM, I am playing two games right now, one the DM liked my premade enough that she brought it in, the other is making me wait until session 0
pirate adventure and I am a skeletal bard, just had the right hook I guess
Cheers! That helps alot and can I just ask, what is the normal time taken for a one-shot?
Brook?!
All the one shots I have seen have been pretty standard 3-4 hours
Nice! Thanks
DUDE! you have no idea lol, I don't watch that ONE anime and made Brook 100%
got shamed HARD!
Lol, that sounds rough
someone was like "why does this sound so familiar"... oh Brook, the next 5 messages were "banishment" lol but its all good just gonna lean hard into it
Guys, what does the infusion 'armor of tools' do
Dude i read Brook and got instantly intrigued i need to get a life 🤦♀️
naaaaah, its all good here my friend
I get it... I'm takin a break from all that as well, got real addicted
why have one life when you can have many, thats why I love DnD
I think it might be better to ask in #dnd-discussion
Ive been watching since 2010 and i have to constantly catch up 😂
too real
I reached 300+ in a month by only watching at night, min 3am 😭 😭
from what I can tell it means you can infuse a tool, so instead of having to pull out the tool using an action it is on the armor for 8hr
oh my god crazy, i used to be the same but now i cant stay up watching anime to save a life 😂
like a the thieves tools, you wouldn't have to "pull them out" they would be at the ready for a mission lasting 8hr
Lol, fair
still cost an action to use the tools from what I am reading
I read so much manga, manhwa, webnovels and etc, that my screen time was 40%
as I look at my 3 screens one that runs anime 24/7..... maybe I do have a problem lol
i defo need to get back into reading them, it's been a while since i read any 🥲
Fair...
omg how
i cant multitask when im watching
the curse/blessing of controlled ADHD
Blessing, imo
i watch everthing subbed too, so i gotta be focused 😂
if I don't have 5 things going on at once 3 or them, will never get done
pure weeb here and gotta be dubbed
Yeah dubbed is just ugh
ah makes it easier
I know I know, *hangs heads in shame
What's a VA?
thankfully I got a buddy at work that will not stand for that, he gives me the must watch list
Maybe take this conversation to #non-dnd-topics? So the channel can stay clear for folks who use it to get started with D&D!
voice actor
you got, sorry
Yeah we shoulsd
Appreciate it!
Hi
HiYa
Welcome!
welcome
Hello 👋
Same ❤️
Glad I'm on the same page with someone
#learn-to-play has some good info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
So am I. I did a little research, but not much.
Fr same
Ty will make sure to check it out
Is your pfp from heluva boss?
Yeah why
It's really cool looking
Thanks
Morning everyone 🙂 new to the page looking to hear about what’s going on in y’all’s campaigns if you’re in any.
This channel is for helping new to D&D folks get started with D&D - e.g. explaining core game rules and mechanics, answering basic questions, etc.
Maybe try your question in #dnd-discussion
ive never played dnd before, how do i make a character or smthn?
What time are the new book released tomorrow?
You can make a character on DND beyond website
They are doing maintenance from 5-9 am Pacific. I'd expect the book to be available shortly after that if not right after that maintenance window.
Can I grapple in combat if Im holding a 2 handed weapon?
you need one free hand
Dumb question, but what is an inspiration point?
I get that they're given out by DMs when certain characters behavior or action impresses them
But what do they actually do?
If you have inspiration, you can expend it when you make an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check. Spending your inspiration gives you advantage on that roll.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#Inspiration
Advantage is roll 2 d20 dice and take the higher result.
Hello I have a question if play a spells based character how do I get them do I think of them or I earn them ?
Depends on the type of spell caster
Warlocks made a deal with some kind of magical creature for example
Sorcerer/ wizard
Sorcerers know a limited number of spells gained through leveling up.
Wizards gain spells through leveling up but they can also find them and add them to their spellbook through the course of an adventure.
Ohhh. Sorry I misunderstood your question 😦
But yeah, iamrazorwing is correct. You will mainly get spells by leveling up.
With a few other sources, like scrolls.
Thank you for the help🤗
Hii
A two-handed weapon only requires two hands when you’re using it to attack. You can otherwise hold it with a single hand.
That said, if you use your other hand to grapple, you won’t be able to use that weapon until you release.
Oh nice
Thank you
How would i know when to tell my players to roll and such,
usually if it's skill check refer to dnd book they have good grasp of what each skill check correspond to
sometimes it's up to you as a dm or you can ask people in dm-discussion if you are still unsure
What can a grapple be useful for?
stopping a enemy from fleeing/moving
climbing , weapon, traps. just off the top of my head.
I did not thought of that, thank you
No like, to enemies
Also it can also make someone unable to do anything now that I think about it
And maybe that could stop it from dodging any attack
well i dont think you would hit your party members with it or set traps for party members. lol
How can grappling an enemy help with climbing?
use enemy as a counter weight.
K thx
Wow, true
And yeah for traps and stuff, just throw it there
hello i just bought my starter pack a few days ago
What are the advantages of fighting with a mount?
hello
momentum
Is that on the Players Handbook?
It would be an increase to your movement speed since you would be moving at the mount's speed, not your own
But a lot of DMs handle mounted combat differently so there may be differences
Can my mount Dodge while I Attack? Or can I only do 1 action?
they can jump, stop, or collide.
i don't think they can dodge
The mount can 'Dash, Disengage, and Dodge'
"It moves as you direct it, and it has only three action options:
Yeah that
So can I do this?
You have your own actions and then you can select from that list of three. So they can't attack for example but they could charge you in.
at a gallop horse dont dodge. lol
But does only the Mount dodge or both of us?
they jump over, they try to stop or they collid/move through.
Just the mount
You can only take one of three actions so if they dash one round, they could dodge in the second
But i'm on top of it
The mount dodges and it doesn't affect me?
i just double check the mount can indeed use dodge action but for themselves only
This is a good guide for mounted combat: https://rpgbot.net/dnd5/characters/mounted_combat/
Thank you
at a dash the rider can try to tunr them. but a horse does not dodge. lol
i like to think that dodge action is a state of mind of trying to dodge so it make sense if you are the one targeted that won't help
I still don't understand if it basically counts as an bonus turn or not
but horses dont really think when riden. the rider tells the horse what to do.
This is a section of the rules that's a little vague so it's best to work out the best option for your with your DM
They can only move their movement speed in a round so if you chase them, probably not
If you let them go then totally possible
not necesseraly especially if you can catch up to them
So if they Disengage and then run away, when their turn ends I can either don't chase them and the combat ends, or move towards them and attack (if there's enough reach) right?
Yup, or a ranged attack would work
Happy to help!

Hello
Hi, I where can I find an info about DnD world setting? Like, map, town, area, etc., or it's depend on the campaign?
It’s dependent on campaign
Most 5e modules are set within the Forgotten Realms setting, which has it’s own wiki if you wanted to learn more about it
If you wanted maps, usually a DM will provide it for the area you’re in.
Ah, I see. I tried to create my character sheet and stuck at the background cause I don't really know about DnD that much
I got into this rabbit hole because BG3 and I'm loving it already lol
Write a vague backstory without place names
Follow Enoki’s advice. Be vague about locations & organizations so when you join a campaign, you can work with your DM to fill in the specifics. For example, “Geralt grew up in a small fishing village before attending a magical university” is nice and vague
Thanks! I'll working on it
Is it okay if I'm a newcomer as a Warlock or Sorcerer even though I never played DnD with an actual campaign? though I have experience with myself and books, I understand the complicated deductions and rules over hand playing a difficult role
Answer these 3 questions with a short sentence or paragraph
1- where did you come from
2- how did you get your skills/powers
3- why are you out in the world
Simple backstory done
ofc not a problem
Absolutely fine! In my experience it’s much better to start off by playing a class you’re interested in without regard to how complex it is
Alright, thank you
what about the Personal Characteristics? Do you guys usually keep it short or more detail?
I'd like to keep them short but not sure if it'll be less interesting
Most interestingness will come from how you play the character at the table and what your character does over the course of the adventure, not necessarily from the words you write on your sheet
depends on your dm
I keep mine fairly brief. It should be enough to quickly reference your personality while giving good guidance as to how your character would react in any given situation
Got it!
Look at the background and there are examples of personality bonds ideals and flaws
These are for you and don’t need much DM input (unless you pick something that could be problematic )
When you go to join a campaign do they want specific classes and races?
Can anyone sorta guide me in building a character sheet
What you trying to build?

question on leveling up a Bard
I've roleplayed in text rps but not properly in actual DnD. Any advice for a complete beginner who has never done a campagin?
I can change one spell when I do, does this include cantrips?
No
so I could change all three at level up if need be?
Since that rule is in the section called “Spells Known of 1st Level and Higher”, it applies only to spells known of 1st level and higher.
Cantrips are largely permanent.
oooh
Though there’s an optional rule in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything that would let you change one cantrip at levels where you get an Ability Score Increase.
man I made a bunch of mistakes, I jumped in a game first time and they had me go level 6. I should have spent more time researching
Talk to your DM. They might let you switch anyway.
Heyy 👋
hopefully, thanks
I'd say watch a few sessions on youtube or just jump on in on #learn-to-play
or a beginner game on #find-a-game
First ask your DM if they’ll even let you.
why do you wanna do that ?
#homebrew could help. You're familiar with the rules, right?
I created a character
Creating a subclass is tricky, though. I definitely wouldn’t advise it for someone who hasn’t played the game yet.
I’m brand new 🧍♂️ but my friends told me to
That’s like trying to build a new part for an engine without understanding how the engine works.
Oh
Sounds like you might want to start looking for a game.

Got it 😭 I’ll watch it first ik the basics but that’s all and I’m not confident
What did you want this homebrew subclass to do?
Does anyone who knows how to play the game help me set up my first game
idk why your friend suggest to make a homebrew subclass make no sense
just ask question here

So, I dunno really how to start this but here we go, I have a wolfkin barbarian with a somewhat detailed backstory and I suppose my worry is that, I don't really want to over-do it. I've rped before in different ways but never DnD so I dunno how much emphasis is really put on backgrounds so guess that's what I'm asking
Sorry for the round-about way of questioning it, I'm a little overwhelmed by how much there is here to look at and absorb
Hello!
Hi!
Honestly backstory can be however detailed you want, it can be "I ate a glowing rock and now i have magic" or it can be super complex. There is never too much backstory.
Maybe it's a self concious thing. Luna's got a pretty detailed backstory and I guess I'm afraid of coming off as protentious if hypothetically, everyone else in the party is some variation of "i ate a glowing rock and now i have magic"
Putting effort into your backstory will never be a problem for a DM, who at the end of the day is likely the only other person at the table to ever read your backstory word for word. You should however try and refrain from ~~writing ~~ handing them multiple pages worth of backstory, to be respectful towards your DMs prep time.
I've done lots of creative writing for my university course and a big thing they preached is basically not wasting the reader's time with waffle, so I'm totally on board with this.
I think Luna's backstory is like, a few paragraphs? Or something
Maybe a page, I dunno
Ok, so I suppose some useful information for someone coming from your background would be that a backstory for a D&D character shouldn't be like any other piece of creative writing, where the goal is to immerse and entertain a reader. More so, the backstory for a character in a TTRPG should create problems and drama in your character's past, that a DM can use to motivate you to adventure.
I'm pretty sure you can add a bit of your backstory detail into the campaign as you roleplay.
Aw no gifs allowed? sad times.
Is that allow?
Many people like different things about dnd, with some people like making a complex backstory and others like just casting cool spell/fighting. Making a detailed backstory doesn't mean you are pretentious, it means you like making detailed backstories.
But I'm listening
hello!!!
as long as its simple changes and not drastic changes that change the whole campaign.
Definitely a great way of doing it. Some of the best parts of character's backstories I've played with are the details theyve added impromptu
My cousin and her husband mentioned this when I asked them for advice about this. I guess it's more of a self-assurance issue on my end. I've never properly done a TTRPG or DnD campain but rped in other circles, and I've been told off for making detailed backgrounds before even though I think I was pretty alright in a rp context but now I'm questioning
I think of it as you reveal your backstory as the campaign go on it might make others want to know your character more
and with some tragic story it's even better at some moment lol
Especially because many times these details are much more believable as they are triggered by something in the moment, rather than when you sit down to craft an entire story beforehand
Yeah I could definitely see that as being a good way to generate interest
Something I've personally experienced though is having a super secret backstory, only for the character to die at level 3 with nobody knowing anything about them, or all the problems they were yet to solve from their backstory
Like for instance, Luna is technically a noble as she's the heir to her clan's throne but she doesn't talk about it and would only ever present her scroll of pedigree when she's basically backed into a corner. So as far as anyone knows she's just some random wolfkin wandering about
And the reasons are 1) she doesnt see it as other peoples' business 2) her mother warned her about flaunting her noblehood since it can lead to issues and 3) it's more of an "you never asked" situation than actively hiding it
From a player perspective, a three sentence backstory is a way to telegraph the broad strokes of your character to the other people at the table. It can help them be prepared for when revelations occur, and can help you both work towards exploring your character's history in a collaborative fashion.
I totally get your feeling, I'm also worried about my DnD backstory too. At first I was like how detail I should be so I asked in this group and end up with about3-4 sentences and I'm actually happy about it
Hello I'm new does anyone know how to find someone to play with like over text
I could probably squeeze her backstory into 3-4 sentences if I really wanted to so that'd work
Squeeze it well, I mean.
Honestly, even when I do write a longer backstory I don't expect to tell the whole thing to other players in advance (no one wants to sit through that). They get the elevator pitch version and maybe other details come out over the course of playing as relevant.
Ive never looked to join one of those games, but the term that should make your search a little easier is 'Play by Post'
I'd say try #looking-for-players , but I'm also new so i'm not sure
Oh yeah people have said that the DM is probably the only one who'd have a full context of the character
Which works for me, really I like collaborating
Okay il try look for something like that
Only the dm and said players have access to the backstory but during the game feel free to share as much as you want
It'll probably be tomorrow that I look ofr a game, since it's almost midnight here and I have work tomorrow. Just dunno if anywhere would accept a wolfkind but I've got other characters too
All sounds very good to me
Thanks for the advice and encouragement, folks. I feel a lot more settled now
I'll do the same too. Already done with character now the rest is just find somewhere to join in
I also think that if your backstory specifically has certain secrets, it's more fun (for me at least) if those secrets are only from the other characters, not the players.
If something is a secret from me, I can't really enjoy that aspect of the character. If something is only secret from my character, I can play into it and/or laugh about it too
also I choose dueling style for my fighter but DnD beyond kept change it to two weapon fighting 😔
Having DM planing something relate to your backstory is so exciting and scary at the same time lol
ngl i kinda wanna go with the whole "is actually a noble" thing purely cause I think it'd be funny since Luna is exceedingly stoic and laconic you wouldnt know unless she told you. Which she wont. Cause nobody asked so she doesn't say. And it's not like the rude way of "durr nobody asked" it's literally "you did not ask me a question so I didn't think I had to answer."
She's intelligent and very perceptive but she IS still a barbarian so
Hello
hello
Hello!
Hello!
If it's not pointed at you you keep quiet I like that approach
This is the kind of thing where I think the distinction between secret from characters and secret from players makes a difference. If you want to keep it a secret from the players until they ask, it may well end of being something that only you ever know and are amused by.
"Luna!" "Vhot?" "Why didn't you tell us you had xyz amount of gold" "Urgh... I do not answer question's zat vur never asked!"
Suppose that's one thing I'm not very experienced in, like what to tell other players and what to keep to myself
I'm sure at one point the DM might point it out for other player for you
I find it hard sometimes to what I know to what my fighter knows.
But I also find it hard as DM if they haven't taken notes
My rule of thumb is if it's something I want the rest of the party to know, I tell them (even if it's a secret in character). If it doesn't matter one way or another, I don't
. Maybe it comes up later, maybe it doesn't.
'you notice that Luna have a larger bag of gold than the rest' or something like that?
yep, that's the one
Oh you just reminded me to double the number of Mimics in my players coin bags
I meant coins I swear I meant coins ...... No I didn't
uh oh.....what have I done
They brought it upon themselves they killed a dragon. Stole it hoard but one of the dragon's minions was a hagrid type fellow who accidentally let Mimics in the Hoard my players haven't questioned why every so often the bags get more gold or why they now have to do more business in the black market as normal shops won't deal with them.
It's not that evil
and oh boy the black market guy won't be happy when they find out the coin is a mimic
He's slightly unhinged and he'll find it interesting
oh, so they only doing business with that guy only right?
hey guys I'm new to d&d👋

did the mimic ever take anything from the party?
i know it's just a coin but gotta ask
maybe potion, scroll, etc
Hey folks, this channel isn't really for discussion about game happenings, so maybe move to #dnd-discussion?
Not one coin thousands
oh right, sorry
Ok no problem
Appreciate it. It helps keep the channel clear for questions about the game and such.
I have an idea
What if there was mimic armor
It looks like a hide grade armor but it kills the owner in their sleep.
Ah people can't sleep with armor
Not the channel for that?
I forgot

I have family that played dnd specifically, considering my first session was a one shot from an autcon. I’ve only grown more fond to try more.
Kinda hard though, especially when my family is sometimes unable to do work through to make it easier.
My dad played the older versions like somewhat around e2 or e3.5 essentially.
My brother is likely playing e5 these days and has been longer for me. My dad use to have stuff for everything but it was sold or something likely.
Personally, as someone that still is new to dnd much. I think it’s reasonable to not rush either and start slowly
@frank cosmos have you perhaps tried learning the rules through watching videos instead of reading?
Generally though, if you're having trouble working through the character sheet I'd take a sharpie and physically divide the sheet into its seperate parts, and focus on each one at a time. comparmentalize
@glass summit Yeah, but I feel as if I just hop back in and learn by hand I could get a better hang of things, although I don't want to annoy other players or the dm by being a fool 😭
Nah dont feel bad for leaning on their experience
They were new once and know what its like. Theyre also more than likely massive nerds about this stuff and will be more than happy to talk about it
That is a relatively good thing to hear! Ty random stranger! My confidence has been boosted
Hey does anyone know how I make a “looking for DM” request thing. Tryna find a dm for our campaign
If I wanna do something dnd related, I’d be looking for someone that’s willing to accept as a player and help me through the steps online. Because I never tried online before :^
However I’d likely would have to wait until I’m no longer in a unit apartment because my family is moving this month
ok so i have a character and found a game. starts in about 20 mins. running vecna eve of ruin. i know next to nothing except for the summary the dm gave me. ive never played on a VTT and this is my first game. any advice or tips would be appreciated.
ah here we go
WHOS IN TEXAS?
Born in. lol
Hi, my name is Makayla, but you can call me Kitty or Kayla if you want. I’m new to D&D, and have wanted to try it for quite some time now! I’d love to make some new friends and go on awesome adventures with you!
Hey Hey everybody. I've played DnD a couple times, and I figured I'd join the server finally! My favorite classes are Cleric and Barbarian, and I love good stories!
I’ve got no idea how to play, lmao. I’m gonna buy a die and check out some books at the library tomorrow :3
before you go spending too much on a new hobby, you should know the Basic Rules can be read for free online
My town’s library is free, plus I don’t need any wifi
If I played BG3 before what eles should I look into about D&D 5e?
I knew there's some different but how much?
Double casting "action spell, and bonus action spell" doesn't work with dnd rules unless your DM allows it.
Hi, I am new to D&D. I bought the starter set on Friday. My name is Samantha and my husband (Ryan) and I play Neverwinter on Xbox but haven't played D&D a long time ago. we are both trying to get back into it. we are from Lansing, MI.
welcome!
Hey all - I'm not new to DND but new to online DND like this. I was hoping to join up a game free or paid starting within the next 1-6 hours? If anyone has a slot and pls message through
Just so you're aware, it's very unlikely for you to find a game within 6 hours on this server. People don't run games here, so there aren't direct sign ups.
Your best bet would be to look through #looking-for-players and see if anything seems interesting
Yeah, very short notice on that one, but, I’ve heard of stranger things happening.
Also, it's generally a good idea to organize a game more. I've never been in a game that took less than a week of group prep that also worked.
Question for the DMs. Do you prep for each chapter and for a few maps in advance or on the fly? Im thinking about story specific stuff, traps etc? Do you just memorize everything or do you spend 5 minutes before each map looking through it?
prepare for what you're likely to encounter very soon, like next-session-soon.
In general, prepare "quantum setpieces" - like if you plan on the mcguffin being in the temple dungeon... it could be a jungle temple, a desert temple, a mountain temple... Bandit encounters, for example, or bounty hunters, whatever - can be basically anywhere.
just a shout to all the new people like myself, gets easier every session. Just finished one and it was great
Hi can anybody help me with dragons of storm wreck island?
hiiii
howd u start brooo?
Check out your local game shops and see if any of them are looking for new players, online posts, or get a group of friends together and try it that way.
Hi guys never played DnD online before only in person any advise will be helpful
Im currently running it. I changed a whole bit cause I'm making this the prelude to rise of tiamat. What's the problem?
playing online isn't very different than playing in person. find out what system your group uses, virtual tabletop like roll20, dnd beyond for character sheets, discord for voice chats. The main thing is making sure you aren't talking over the other people cause it can be hard when you aren't able to see each others face.
Well i would of if theres on near my place haha, i dont think dnd is THAT big in the philippines
WE have a few actually in South Africa and comi con will have 2
i know we'll be having a renfaire who will have a dnd area next year but yea not sure
keep an eye out then, and if you can convince a group of friends to try it out, the basic rules are free and an easy way to start out
Ask in places where nerd/alt culture is, book shops, craft shops, libraries, weird goth candle shops
lol one of my friends even went and put a craigs list ad looking for players when he first started
So im trying to figure out how to calculate attacks and what my players have to roll doing an encounter. Lets say a play chooses to hit a goblin, what do I have to do? I can roll the d20 but how do i calculate what is a success and whats not?
Im using the dndbeyond encounter system btw
There should be monster handbook
You add the "To hit" modifier on the attack to the d20 result, then compare the total to the Goblin's Armor Class (AC) on the statblock
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#MakinganAttack
If you go to DnD beyond encounter you will see all monsters stats as the dm obviously if your a player it would be so much more fun if you don t look at it haha
So if the goblin is AC 15 and i roll 16, I get a succesfull hit? In the case that there are no modifiers?
You would hit with 15 and higher.
How does the critical hit work then?
What weapon are you trying to attack with
You crit if you roll a 20 on the d20 before modifiers
Crit is a roll of 20 or 1 right?
A critical hit is a 20 and you roll double the amount of damage dice for that attack. Rolling a one is a critical failure
“Ability Modifier. The ability modifier used for a melee weapon attack is Strength, and the ability modifier used for a ranged weapon attack is Dexterity. Weapons that have the finesse or thrown property break this rule.
Some spells also require an attack roll. The ability modifier used for a spell attack depends on the spellcasting ability of the spellcaster.
Proficiency Bonus. You add your proficiency bonus to your attack roll when you attack using a weapon with which you have proficiency, as well as when you attack with a spell.”
I think what im having the most trouble with is, how to navigate these things quick on the go. Lets say, a mage cast a spell. Then i have to check the players sheet for their stats and the look up the spell in order to calculate what the dmg is and then i have to do the same for the monster
So they would have their own sheet with their characters already written out and should be calculating their side of the damage. Then you would tell them if it hits or not
The spell they cast should say if the enemy needs to make a saving throw or if it’s an attack roll. A spell attack would be their proficiency +spell casting modifier to hit
- 3 MODIFIER
+5 SPELL ATTACK
13 SAVE DC
So this is what is says on the sheet for a spell. Does this mean it has to hit for 13 or higher to hit?
Or is it 8?
Or maybe 8 to hit and 13 for the reciever to avoid?
So say they cast fireball, all the creatures in that area must roll a 13 or higher on a dexterity saving throw or take the full damage
Okay, that makes senbse
If they cast fire bolt, it’s their roll d20+5 and would have to get a 15 or higher to damage the goblin
Yes, each monster will have a different AC stated on their stat block
Of course~
it means when anything calls for their spellcasting modifier, such as using Dispel Magic on a high level spell, theirs is +3.
When they have to make a spell attack, it's +5 to hit, such as with Fire Bolt or Shocking Grasp.
When something has to make a saving throw against a spell they cast, it's DC 13, such as against Burning Hands or Charm Person.
I’ll addendum this by saying critical successes and failures only exist for attack rolls and death saving throws. Skill checks and other saving throws cannot crit succeed/fail
(At least, not by the rules as written)
Which for the sake of newcomers is what we should be sticking to
^
And lets say a player wan to use perception to scout the terrain, what dertermains the succes criteria?
The DM decides a Difficulty Class (DC) of the check based on what they're doing
Their active perception would be their d20 roll plus their perception modifier (Wisdom) plus their proficiency bonus.
The guideline for a DC is the following:
DC 5 - Very Easy
DC 10 - Easy
DC 15 - Medium
DC 20 - Hard
DC 25 - Very Hard
DC 30 - Nearly Impossible
Oh dang, i got that on my notes. I was just unsure when to use it
This is based on the average person (a commoner) having a +0 in each ability
So for example, if you think the average commoner would have about a 50/50 chance at succeeding at something, that'd be an each (DC 10) ability check
It's important to remember that Player Characters (PCs) are well above average, so could very well automatically succeed at some things
So if its dark and a player got darkvision 60ft, it would make it easier, and I should account for that?
Well if they're trying to look at something further than 60 ft away and it's total darkness, they couldn't possibly succeed as they cannot see anything
But if you want to modify the difficulty of something based on more contextual aspects, that's where disadvantage and advantage come in
Is there such a thing as an eldritch bard, if so what would that look like?
My thoughts are pretty much impowered bard skills at the cost of the players health
I see, that was a dumb question hahah. I think i kinda understand now. In the end, its not set in stone, the DM controls with a lot of freedom
So for example, say there's a wall the PCs want to climb
- You decide it's a Strength (Athletics) check to climb
- You decide based on the wall and how sheer and craggly it is, it'd be a Medium challenge for the average person, so you set the DC to 15
- One of the PCs is carrying something cumbersome, so you decide it's a little harder for them, so they have disadvantage on the check (roll two d20s and take the worse of the two)
A player with darkvision sees darkness as dim, which would still be disadvantage on their perception check on things relying on sight
No, there's nothing official like that
darn it
what is each saving throw used for exactly ? cuz i simply cant find out or imagine what attack or thing it would be that a charisma or a wisdom save would be used for it
It's used for game effects that require a save, such as fireball or banishment
Basically any effect where it's less about you hitting the target accurately and more about them evading/resisting the effect
A game effect will tell if you it requires a saving throw
hmm i see then a strength saving throw would be like resisting a throw and a dex would be dodging and constitution for not getting drunk ig but i still dont get and perhaps int for some magic stuff but then again what is charisma or wisdom used for ?
Maybe try just flipping through the rules (the chapter on using ability scores) and looking at some random spells
If you have the DMG, it has a section in chapter 8: running the game, on Saving Throws
It explains some typical context/reasoning as to what kind of save goes for, generally, what kind of effect
fair enough
You could use multiclassing rules to pick up some levels in great old one warlock or aberrant mind sorcerer, and use it to empower the concept you’re going for with bard, tho.
Hi, I'm new to dnd, I just bought the essentials kit and I'm looking for a party to join who could hopefully teach me or host online games.. or even just teach me basics in a call or something.. thanks!
Hey so I recently played my first game of dnd and I’m hooked and already preparing for my next campaign. I was looking into Hexblade Warlock as that really appeals to me, but I’m a little confused on how they work narratively. Can someone give some examples of what some hexblade warlocks stories would be like?
It really depends on the campaign itself as narrative storytelling doesn’t need to be tied to a chosen class.
Though it might be worth checking out this video by pointy hat about warlocks in general: https://youtu.be/VMC_kcUKdhw?si=iRl7kOi3cKv72wp6
Will do. But how does a hexblade patron work? Does the patron give you a weapon or is the weapon itself the patron? Or can it be either?
One of the things that might be hard to grasp at first but you'll learn more as you gain experience is that "Lore/Flavor" and "Game Mechanics" are two different things. A warlock's patron is an example of lore/flavor. The book has written suggestions for how it is intended to be handled, but it doesn't actually affect your gameplay or change the rules of the game. A very common saying in the D&D community is "flavor is free" which essentially means that if something is not a game mechanic, you can change it to suit your needs. You can't change the rules regarding things like how many dice you roll, how many times you can use an ability, what damage type you do when you attack, etc. But you can change things like what it looks like when you use an ability or who gave you your powers.
If I remember correctly, the intended flavor for a hexblade warlock is that the weapon is your patron. But I've seen it played both ways so many times that I genuinely can't remember if that is correct or not
Its definitely a lot simpler if you stay within the suggested flavor to begin with, but for hexblades specifically, the difference between the blade being the patron and the patron gifting you the blade is so minor that people do it either way without a second thought
I'd pull up the book to double check what the official wording is, but D&D Beyond is currently doing maintenance, so I can't access it
Given that the raven queen is an example Hexblade patron, iirc, I've always assumed the sword isn't supposed to be your patron, just a connection to them
But I've seen the other version plenty
New to DND and searching for a DM to DM a game for me and my friends stupid character idea, where do I ask?

i'd like to know about the spore subclass or the "the last of us" of druids as it has been apparently nicknamed
The Circle of Spores Druid was originally printed in Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica but reprinted in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. Did you have any specific questions about it?
Where can I find an online game?
thank you

Basic Rules are free and you can make, I think 6 characters, with a free account
The free basic rules are great for getting into it. You don’t need to jump into it with 20 different books and 40 subclasses. It’s a great way to learn the basics.
When is dnd 6 edition coming out
The revised fifth edition Player's Handbook comes out September 17th.
There are no announced plans for a sixth edition.
Thanks
Can someone explain to me what class is a artificer and what can they do please 🙏
Artificer is the name of the class. It is the 13th class in the game. It was originally published in Eberron: Rising from the Last War, but it was later republished in Tasha's Cauldron of everything. It is not in the Player's Handbook, nor is it included in the free basic rules.
Artificer's class features focus around imbuing objects with magic. They can create temporary prototype magic items called "Infusions" and their subclasses can create unique weapons or other inventions that only they can use
That's sounds so coool
I certainly think so. Its my personal favorite class

So I just got done reading the learning page and such, how do I go about doing a PBP? Like finding a group that does PBP?
Search the looking for channel or other sites
If you want to expand your search outside this server, you can find play-by-post (PBP) on the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search PBP or play by post as keywords using Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function.
is there a group playing right now thats willing to bring in a newcomer, will use dnd beyond and looking for a dicord voice and/or video game session

D&D takes some time to learn, and new folks are joining the server all the time, so one-on-one instruction is really not feasible. Do you need to pay in dnd beyond for additional character creation options? i literally have 0 experience with this shit
ay
hai
i know a good website for char creation
I do
but it has everything for free
granted, you have to find and write everything yourself
but it gives you complete control over your character's stuff
dnd beyond?
Cause for example i want my character to be a goblin but that option isnt a thing
OHHHHHHHH SHIT YOUR THE BEST
Oh.
bruh
So can DM's use alternative character sheets to dnd beyond?
I don't trust dnd beyond, it take AGES to load, I would just download the sheet PDF for major items and track in a notebook
cause when i look in "looking for players" it says they do it through dnd beyond
wdym
wait so if i join a campaign does the dm NEED my character sheet or can i be in charge of it? ive never joined a dnd campaign before
you're in charg eof it
Omg that makes it so much easier
but you should tell your dm what it is
np
My friends and I have just started getting into DnD, I was wondering if anyone had any tips DMing and how to learn?
make simple characters/npcs to learn stats and stuff first
also its fun

?dmtips
The bot posts above have very helpful information for a new DM
that works too
Thank you
Thank you

oh boy thats alot o.o
It's a one stop shop for things you might want quick access to.
You can surprisingly skip a lot of stuff before jumping into a game.
Best example is just starting with pre-built character and taking the time learn how combat works.
time to do reading lol thank you
Take your time and remember no one is expected to have all the rules memorized so go at your own pace.
If I am looking to start playing online is getting a DnD Beyond subscription worth it?
Nah, just use what is available for free. You probably shouldn't need more than 8 character slots yet
Does making your own moves/spells make the game more/less fun?
why would it?
Homebrew is almost a staple of the community. It lets players make their own spells, feats, and subclasses, and so on.
For newcomers, it's recommended to get to grips with the game as it is, before trying to change it or add new parts. Like adding new parts to machinery, it's best you know what's going on and what the ramifications are.
However, as far as the game goes, something like the minutae of which way you swung your sword doesn't matter, just that the attack is being made, what it's targeting, etc
Hiya, I'm Liv! I'm new-ish to D&D, meaning, I played Baldur's Gate and joined a one-shot once. I'd love to find a EU/UK group to play with... and patient people who don't mind teaching me.
Hey liv!! I’d love to play with you, but I’m not in your time zone and I think scheduling would suck. I hope you can find a good party!

Heyy, I'm having a session in a few days with my players, I'm kinda new to DMing. We are gonna be playing Stormwreck Isle, when should I show maps to my players? Should I wait for them to explore a bit and then give them a map to see the places they explored, or should I give them a map the moment they enter the place?
Any ideas how wepon Mastery works on barbarians and fighters?
The wepon Mastery points
There's no weapon mastery 'points'?
Ik that at 1st the list says 3 wepon Mastery but idk what that means since the disc says I can learn 3 kinds of martal and simple
The disc?
Dsicription*
Weapon Mastery
Your training with weapons allows you to use the mastery properties of three kinds of Simple or Martial weapons of your choice. Whenever you finish a Long Rest, you can practice weapon drills and change one of those weapon choices. When you reach certain Fighter levels, you gain the ability to use the mastery properties of more kinds of weapons, as shown in the Weapon Mastery column of the Fighter Features table.
you pick three simple or martial weapons
You can use the weapon mastery properties of those types of weapons
You can change which three weapons you've picked each long rest
Oh I thought they actually like spell slots
No, it's right there in the description
Your training with weapons allows you to use the mastery properties of three kinds of Simple or Martial weapons of your choice
Hey I’m a new dnd player, used to play in hs but that was years ago and only w close friends. I’ve been watching a lot of videos on character making and figured a bard half-elf would be a good way to go since I’m musically inclined irl and would be fun to whip out a uke or flute randomly.
Is that a good/safe combo for a new player?
Hey I ran stormwreck too. I changed it a bit cause I make it the prelude to rise of tiamat. My DM style is theatre of mind and I describe the maps the best I can. I rarely show them. When I do its because I didn't explain well but I cut off parts. Like for example the myko cave, I show them the place where the octopus appears but not the whole cave as a whole.
ive never played dnd but i wana learn and have fun with the game
Why wouldn't it be? Sounds good. The best combo is the one you're having fun w.
Power play or min maxing is not my style so if that's what you're asking, idk.
would anyone consider teaching me or is there a yt totourial?
Tons of yt videos online and the basic rules are free to read. You should start reading them first and watch some yt content
: D
sweet thanks main 🙂
ye, I heard about this way of DMing, i might give it a try, but im not the best at describing places, and from what i've heard from my players, they like it when I present maps and allow them to place themselves on the map, especially on fights
Yeah fights can be chaotic, i make it how i feel. If they dont know hownthe settings looks i paint them roughly how its set but nothing more. I usually run games via discord so I stream anyway (setting the mood w Spotify songs and having a picture full screen of smth story related) nothing to wild but just smth to look at so I can switch to paint in a sec.
But for your situation, if you wanna show maps, I'd do it little by little and not the whole thing. But that's just me. You can try w the dragonrest map. If u first start the campaign, the very first map is dragonrest so you can show it fully to them and see how it works, its the hub anyway
okay, thanks!
can someone explain the game to me😭😭
i am entirely new but i already did a character (just for fun)
i haven't played 1 game because i am kinda scared to make a mistake

Welcome. The bot post above has some great resources to help get you started. If you have any specific questions, you can ask them here and we’ll be more than happy to help, but it’s a lot easier for us to answer questions like “what is a saving throw” or “how do I make an attack roll” rather than “how do I play D&D”
If anything in the guides and rules posted above confuses you, please feel free to ask for clarification though!
ok thx 😂
Mistakes are inevitable, though. It's important that the group is open and honest about how they deal with "mistakes," though, and I think you'll find that lots of players and DMs are accommodating.
Hi, I have NEVER played DnD before. I even FOUND OUT abt the game last year. I know pretty little about the game. I kinda wanna play it, but I don't have the physical stuff. I wanna play a game to try it out but I have nobody around me who is interested
You can find folks to play with online, and you don't need to buy anything. The Basic Rules are free, character sheets are free, and you can roll dice digitally.
But does it still feel the same as playing table top?
Of course not, but that doesn't mean it's better or worse! Just different.
It's different, but I still find it a lot of fun. And between not playing and playing, I'll take playing!
Okay thank you!

I've plaid a little bit of D&D but I havent had a full game sadly, due to moving things I am just wondering where can I find a decent list of faiths?
perhaps this resource may be more useful then: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
This is a guide written by one of the other members of this server, with far more detailed explanations of how to play D&D online or in person
The Forgotten Realms wiki has more information.
thank you
Have fun going down the forgotten realms rabbit hole if you decide to keep reading more of it
Okay thats good, I was just wondering because I tend to enjoy monks or going into more Necromancer type stuff So was just wondering what my options were. I've read a little bit Just didn't see that many faith options where I was reading lol
Ultimately it'll be up to the DM what the pantheon looks like, so I recommend keeping it vague ("I follow the sun god") and you can tweak it when you join a table.
Faiths and religions are very often left up to interpretation of the DM or players. Most of the time, gods are specific to the setting you are playing in. If you are playing in an established setting like the Forgotten Realms or Eberron or Greyhawk, there may be a list of specific gods that are part of that setting, but they don't transfer over from one setting to another. Sometimes a DM may add or remove gods from these settings to suit their stories and lore. And if your DM is creating their own setting, that could mean they are creating entirely unique gods for it as well. Ultimately, its far better to choose a faith by having a discussion with your DM to figure out what works for their setting and their story, rather than picking something from a list online

Sorry, guys was redirected for this channel by mistake
Ok thank you
im finding it very hard to find a game lol, besides im highly inexperienced. Would you guys recommend playing any of the baldurs gate games to get an idea about how the game works before i join a game?
Not for all games, I'm a professional DM, so my games i usually charge per player which usually means you will get a more elaborated experience, but there's free games and they could be good too!
While it's similar, it takes liberties with the game rules to make for a smoother video game experience. Some folks can see the difference; some get tripped up.
You might look for Adventurers League games locally, sign up for a learn-to-play session during the virtual weekends (see the Events tab in the server), or just expand your search to other avenues.
Ok thank you
Honestly, baldurs gate 3 is the only one that will give you a notion of how to play the rules, but the experience of the real rpg is diferent, in terms of freedom of choices and even in rules.
Baldur's Gate 3 while an excellent implementation of the rules won't teach you anyting about roleplaying which is what the game is a roleplaying game.
some places to look would be here on this discord under "find a game" your "friendly local game store" or sites like startplaying.games. you might also check the dnd beyond forums on the website.
As someone who is pretty inexperienced in DnD and has played Baldurs gate I do think it helped me in terms of understanding combat/classes and general lore better. But the game also does a lot for you and there are differences in gameplay. I would still recommend it but it's more of a general idea/understanding instead of a tutorial if that makes sense? (Is it okay for me to share my opinion here I literally just joined)
I think it's fine to chime in. This channel isn't really a discussion space, but I think you made a very relevant comment!
BG3 is alot of fun and it helped me clarify some rules at times i didn't realize that i didn't understand. probably not a real good introduction to real roleplaying though.
Yeah BG3 is great but it does lack the roleplay that you get at a table or online game
Also the game is just a lot of fun in general and has so many options I would recommend playing it regardless of how much it helps. I personally still struggle with finding ways to include myself in rp though but that comes with experience ig
Hello!
i mean if we could get everything we needed out of playing something like BG3 we would never play actual d&d with humans at a table
You could play those yes but don’t take what that game teaches you for gospel
I'd love to actually
how do we find you on startplaying
I think advertising outside of the LFG channels is against the rules.
unfortunately i'm stil in the weeds on a few personal things happening or i'd run an introduction to d&d one-shot
In my profile its the link
ok great ty
For like a year now I've been wanting to get into DnD but in the server I did join replies are like pretty slow and stuff and I'd love to have something like sessions since I'm missing live-interaction I think? I don't have anyone to play with irl and my two friends who are interested haven't played either (And Idk if I wanna DM and be a player)
SAMMMMMEEE
Complete noob with no experience so im scared to ask to join any parties 😵💫 Been wanting to get into D&D for awhile and thought I’d start here, I have general characters ideas in mind and such but thats it.
Does anyone know good places to start? I can’t tell what advertisements would be beginner friendly, is that something people normally list?
I love writing characters but I don't really ever get to use them
Have you read the rules? Watched any videos?
So real

What's sad is: My fav teacher wanted to open a DnD club but she had to decide between dnd or drama and she chose drama -> She recommended I check out the comic store in the city for posters/ads but I am too socially anxious 💀
I just read the rules, some stuff I think is locked for me? Not sure lol Do you have and video recommendations?
Hey, guys @high sequoia and @arctic turtle How about we newbs do one of our own? And get an experienced DM with us
When I first was getting into D&D there were so many LFG postings on all the various places that specifically said "new players welcome"
Id be so so down
I wouldn't mind
There's the learn to play, but honestly you will learn, playing... there are sites like startplaying and other that you can find DMs
NOICE
Handbooker Helper (linked above) is a good intro. You can also find recorded or live games on YouTube and Twitch, just to see how play proceeds.
Thank you both! Ill go look into it right now
Caveat: D&D played by non-actors and professionals is a little different, so don't regard those shows as the baseline. It's the difference between a Hollywood production and your local theater troupe.
Yes thats true, especially with new player who understandably take their time to come out of the shell
Ahhh timezones suck
but startplaying is paid tho isnt it?
But it's kind of our job as DMs to give them time to shine and enjoy the game, already had players that in session 1 said absolutely nothing, but with time became the bard of the group kk
The trick is to focus on sharing availability rather than a timezone. If you can play at night and someone else can play during their morning, go for it!
they used to have $0 options but now the lowest is $5
Thats another thing im a little worried about, Don’t get me wrong I love roleplaying and acting but the fear of embarrassment gets me every time
that's unfortunate, $5 is a lot in my currency lol
If you play with strangers, that's definitely an uphill battle, but hopefully with time and trust, you'll feel comfortable!
I know but in looking for players most ppl have their sessions at like 8pm my time on saturday's/sundays and I have school so that kinda doesn't work
understood, look around here on the discord under "find a game" and the dnd beyond forums then. you will find plenty of free games. i think some DMs started charging minimal amounts on game finder sites so that people would not back out.
I had my own RP server (Not nearly as complex and DnD but still a lot of management) and I stayed up like 8 hours once for a murder mystery thing (tbf it was during summerbreak which ends next tuesday) so I won't be as available
Nice
ah yes that makes sense actually, i was wondering what's the penalty in this server for backing out
even though i dont know much about the game yet, i can atleast understand this much that even a single person backing out can ruin the experience for everyone else
In my RP server there were 18 ppl and I think like- 14 of them backed out it was hell
Take baby steps, eventually you will be able to express yourself, that help me out of RPG as well...
Luckily I could kill them off as it was a murder mystery thing but it took so much last minute work to ensure it all worked out
you don't need alot of people to play even just two people can play if one plays the monsters (DM)
a DM and two players is often good for really good RP heavy games
Oh I know, it was just based on something that usually has 16 players
I kinda combined 2 anime/games and started on the lore
some of th ebest games i've ever been in were just a couple of people in a text chat on discord
it doesn't have to be complex
Yea it'd be less stressful and more cozy I think
I made another server for like- the aftermath of the 2. killing game which plays in a dystopian world etc. but I am totally taking my time with it so like it's not gonna happen anytime soon
i can do that with my friend who also happens to be inexperienced lol
that's a great way to start one of you can be the DM and the other can be a player.
I'm making it more DnD like though and not make it a Killing Game to allow me more like- freedom in a way
it can and it can't, you need a minimal number of players, if a players leaves and that minimal number is still there, DM will have to do some adjustments but it can still go on.
look around for people you know who are interested. the key to finding players is finding people who are interested.
Looking for opinions on explaining how to create a character to a new player using who, what, where, when, why & how
The What and How is your mechanical side of the character, what skills are you going to be proficient in, what are they good at what aren't they and how do they approach a problem using those skills.
The Who, Where, When and Why is the roleplay side. Why are they that class, Where are they from, When did something important happen to them and who are they as a person at their core.
What do yall think?
I'm gonna ask my friend who's never played but would be interested, if he'd understand said explanation (We always come up with concepts but never actually find anyone to play with)
This guide is very good, for new players and even for DM, i'm posting on foruns that i miss. thx
I like it. I do think this question might be better in #dnd-discussion. This channel is to help folks get oriented to the game, not so much a space for newcomers to discuss.
Glad to hear!

What's better between a Light Crossbow and Heavy Crossbow? I struggle to see the pros and cons there
heavy is more damage and range ig
So, if I've both weapons I should rather use the heavy one
i think heavy is 2-handed, isnt it?
It is, that's right
then you cant use any other weapons while holding it
I don't have anything for off hand atm
then use heavy
Yea, I'm legit.. well naked because I lose everything
I don't even have an armor lol
I found these 2 weapons tho
Btw, my DM told me I could take a free feat at level 1 and I took Observant
Is it good?
