Discord with Avrae to handle dice rolls/dndbeynd character integration
See #ddb-avrae-help for more info
Thanks đ Since i've no first hand experience then i don't really know what even makes a given platform good for PbP.
Hey! completely new to D&D (as in currently reading and watching all the how to play things possible) and I have a question mostly to any DMs: How do you usually go about handling new players and what can a new player expect from their first session?
Well, the more effort a new player puts in to learn the rules beforehand, the smoother that first session will go. I think everyone understands that if youâre playing with a new player, then youâll have to explain some thing to them as the session goes on. But DMs have a lot to keep track of, so in general, players should be keeping track of their own character, and their abilities and stats and HP on their own.
Thank you!
Your first session will most likely involve some amount of all three âpillars of playâ which are Combat, Role Play, and Exploration. Combat is the most rules-oriented aspect of the game, which means that theirs strict rules for who can act, when they can act, and what they can do. Role Play is a bit more free form, and generally refers to things like talking to NPCs, solving puzzles, and interacting with your fellow party members. Exploration is the act of navigating the game-world and solving its challenges outside of combat. Travel, dungeon crawling, tracking something through the woods, etc.
I played dnd not too long ago once with some friends from a friend and eventho i wasnt that close to then i enjoyed it alot as a player but now im trying to get my friends to play fnd with me snd i have to be a gm but i literally dont even know how to start a premade game can someone please help me out thanks alot for anyone reading this
Understanding the rules is key to running any adventure, so this would be the first step: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Hello, is it alright to ask here something about classes or should i do it on another channel?
What's your question?
@wild onyx I was creating my character for the fun of it, and i was going to go for a shadow sorcerer and multi class with Genie Warlock. What i wanted to ask are the levels at which you get the invocations.
@wild onyx I kind of wanted to do a lvl 14 shadow sorcerer and lvl 6 genie warlock
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#Warlock
The warlock page tells you when it gets its invocations
@timid locust Got it, thx
Also is this a message best for the newcomers channel or is the better in the world building one ?
I apologize, but I think this question would best fit #dm-discussion . This channel is for explaining the basics of DnD to new players.
Ok thanks, much appreciated

Hi everyone, I'm new to D&D and yet to play (I've made a character at least I think I have) and want to find a group but am apprehensive. I've an older person, with no experience of the game and know noone that plays. I'm a little uncomfortable with new groups of people particularly when joining a group that may already know each other and perhaps have been together for a while. I just wanted to see if anyone has some tips or advice about getting involved?
You could try Adventurers League, which is D&Dâs organized play program. Itâs not necessarily a consistent group, and you can just play for one session rather than being committed for the long haul. Westmarches play is MMO-like, with a stable of DMs and players who sign up for specific quests as desired. You could also look locally for tabletop programming directed at new folks so you avoid the fear of the built-in group.
And you could always just advertise that youâre starting a group, and people will probably show up from all corners!
Can some one help me I'm new to all of it

I'm new I want to watch someone play that's it I don't think I can play very well
Some classic Live Play videos that people recommend are Critical Role or Dimension20.
Plus D&D is its own category on Twitch! https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons
Hey all, i am curious about a thing, i think it depends on DM, tho i am curious what you think. Let's say for ex you are reading a book on medicine, or survival can that help increase your character's proficiency in that skill?
There are rules for gaining additional proficiencies through training while in game, but these require extended periods of downtime, and not just reading one single book. More typically, itâs played the other way around. If you know that at your next level up you will choose to gain a proficiency in a new skill, then before you get that level up you might have your character seek out a book or a teacher so you can explain where you learned that skill from
Quick question, can wizards switch out spells on long rests?
Another question, can i use mold earth to make 10 tiny pieces of rock (if there is none around) to then use animate object?
Yes they can prepare a different set of spells from their known spells on their long rest.
Rules as written doesn't say if that's possible (spells do only what they say they do) and would require the DM to approve or not.
Hey guys, quick question here. So when making a character, let's say I have specific abilities scores that I want, that have to do with my character's backstory. In that case am I allowed to manually input my Ability Scores instead of rolling d6s for them or the standard array?
The third option is Point Buy, which lets you spend points on your different ability scores as you see fit.
You can find the rules for that here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores
Ahh, yes I'm aware of that method but the thing is I want my Strength score to be 6 for backstory reasons which is not possible in that method. So are there any ways to do that independently or does the dm have to agree?
Thanks!
There are no official rules that would let you choose a six in any score.
Rolling is the only method that could (randomly) produce a six.
I see, then I'll just use the Point Buy, thanks a lot!
Hi

Welcome!
Hi
So uhh how do you play dnd
I mean I watched a simple tutorial but yknow there are some questions
What questions?
#learn-to-play has some good general information to get you started.
Ok thx đ
Ultimately the Basic Rules have everything you need to know to play.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
But if youâve ever got any specific questions, folks here are happy to answer them.
The arakora have hands right? Like the picture on DnD beyond doesn't show human like hands but not truly bird talons either.... Do they just shred everything they touch or is that personal preference
https://www.dndbeyond.com/avatars/thumbnails/25746/804/420/618/637880558236223926.png
Looks like they have hands and taloned feet
Wizards are fun!
hello! im new to Dnd and wonders if anybdy wants to play using the roll 20 bot on vc?
Bro if I wasn't a guy would have kissed ys
I wanted to play with some1 but I didn't have the courage to ask
I wanna play
@thorny beacon I'll happily join you
Hey folks! Please do not solicit or organize games inside these normal discussion channels. Please use the LFG (Looking For Game) channels or direct message folks (but be careful and considerate). To learn how to use our LFG channels please read #find-a-game
I have problems making the message about the game
So the bot commands to post in the LFG channels start with /looking-for - so simply type that and you should be prompted by Discord to select dm or players or community or paid.
Select the one where you'd like your post to be posted and the bot will give you a form to fill out.
Fill it our and hit submit.
The bot will then create the post in the desired LFG channel and create a thread on your post which you can use that thread to provide any updates, clarifications, or communicate with would-be DMs and players.
Is there a filter for one-shots?
Youâd need to search manually using Discordâs built-in search function.
does anyone know how to have a dnd session with friends online
Discord to talk, roll 20 for the board, and dnd beyond for character sheets(or paper if there into that)
DM makes the campaign on D&D Beyond, invites the players to add their characters, and the campaign log will keep track of the dice rolls. Then you just need a way to communicate.
You can play Adventures League.
Theyâre comprised of one shots.

If i ambushed a surprised enemy do i still need to bypass its AC to be able to hit it?
Yes - to hit an enemy you must meet or beat the target's AC
Thank you
The basic rules has a section on Surprise: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#Surprise
In generaly, at the start of combat you determine if anyone is surprised. Generally people call this the surprise round.
If you're surprised, you can't move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can't take a reaction until that turn ends. A member of a group can be surprised even if the other members aren't.
Wsg
I asked some friends and they couldn't give me a straight answer.
If you have Tavern Brawler can you still attempt the bonus grapple if you have an offhand weapon?
When you hit a creature with an unarmed strike or an improvised weapon on your turn, you can use a bonus action to attempt to grapple the target.
It just says you have to hit the target with an unarmed strike or improvised weapon first.
Ahhhhhh, okay, apparently I'm just blind
Can someone explain me how the damage works?i just started lerining the rules
Damage Rolls
Each weapon, spell, and harmful monster ability specifies the damage it deals. You roll the damage die or dice, add any modifiers, and apply the damage to your target. Magic weapons, special abilities, and other factors can grant a bonus to damage.
- Basic Rules, Chapter 3, Damage And Healing, Damage Rolls: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#DamageRolls
Thanks
Keep in mind, damage dice are only rolled if an attack successfully hits. Though some attacks cause special effects in addition to or instead of damage.
Like burning?
Not to worry though Grass, if you have a beginner friendly DM, he'll tell you exactly what to roll in what order and how to apply your bonuses.
Thanks id play with someone but i dont wana mess anything up
I joined a campaign that was specially advertised for beginners. Most the questions you probably have are something you'll pick up with just a session or two.
Not exactly.
For example, there are certain special abilities that can cause a target to fall prone, which is a condition that a player character or enemy can get.
Ok
This is true.
Though players are encouraged to learn what they can beforehand.
Main reason is Dungeon Masters put time and work into setting adventures for their players.
So anything that can be done to meet DMs halfway helps foster healthy relationships between two.
Grass, one thing I would say is that if you want to strategize... Ask the other players. Otherwise, the others will just ignore any comments you make. I have tried to strategize by just kinda whispering or sending DMs to ppl in discord, but it didn't work. Unless you basically call a huddle and kind of negotiate, it'll be hard. However, if you do strategize, the DM might throw you some extra curve balls :p
Communication in general is always recommend in and out of game.
If you're playing online through VTT, I wouldn't say private messages get ignored.
It more that people have their attention focused on the VTT.
In those instances send message in the VTT chat, some even allow you to private message people directly through the VTT.
Thanks

Is the damage dealt the sum of the number on the dice+atribute+proficiency? Or I don't add proficiency into it?
In the case of Attack Rolls, your damage is usually [roll of the damage dice] + [ability score modifier]
You only add your proficiency bonus to damage, if the effect dealing the damage specifically calls for it
Thanks

oke
are there any spells that counteract darkness
counteract the spell darkness, or just someplace being dark?
I think it's kensei monks only do that
Hey! New guy here!
Looking to join a game. Thinking of making a dragonborn or goblin character
post in Looking For DM, check out Looking For Players
Got it. Thanks!
Monks can use many weapons as long as they fulfill the requirements of a monk weapon listed under their martial arts feature (aka shortswords + simple melee weapons that don't have the 2-handed or heavy property).
Kensei's just get to have more weapons available to be monk weapons. In particular, martial weapons & longbows.
hello people!
What does the +(#) to hit mean from the monster? Do i add it to its d20 AC roll if for example it has +6 to hit?
Do i still add modifier to a monsters attack?
The +X is the monster's modifiers, so you just add that to the monster's d20 attack roll

You can add it manually via the homebrew tools, provided you keep it set to private.
Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Thank you for your help! I'm just trying to find my way through the game!
When you say I can't publish it or I have to keep it to private can you share it with your DM? Or is this to dissuade sharing between people who haven't bought/making characters for others?
Seems pointless to make a character and be unable to show it to a potential party? Maybe I'm misinterpreting the rule
Any homebrew you create is automatically shared with any campaigns you're in.
Users are only allowed to publish (to the global community) things that are their own original work.
Since anything you got from a book isn't your own original work, those things cannot be published.
But you can use it just fine without publishing.
Ok ty
What should I put for bonds on the character sheet? What does it mean by âbondsâ basically.
Bonds are anything your character has a strong attachment to. Your friends, family, hometown, an organization youâre a part of, etc.
Personality Traits, Bonds, Flaws, and Ideals have no mechanical effect. Those 4 things exist as role playing prompts, to help you get in character and make your character feel more interesting as a person. They can be whatever you want them to be.
okay, thanks.
can someone explain alignments to me please
Similar to what I just said with PBIF, alignment exists as purely a role play prompt to help you act âin characterâ during your game
Thank you!
There's basically two scales:
Evil <-> Nuetral <-> Good
Chaotic <-> Nuetral <-> Lawful
You effectively pick one of those from each scale, for one of nine possible combinations.
And it's meant to indicate your typical attitude.
Alignments are uses to describe what kind of person someone is.
It's more of a descriptor than something you must follow.
What would you put in attacks and spell casting? Iâm using a Harengon barbarian with a great axe, does that affect anything?
You could list the details for your axe under attacks.
i.e. your attack bonus, the weapon's damage, etc.
Doesn't sound like you've got any spells, so you can leave that blank.
i have no idea how to do anything in dnd im stuck on characture creation please help
What have you got so far? Where exactly are you stuck?
whats the difference between milestone and xp
How do you make homebrew characters in DnD beyond mobile? I don't see a button for it in the character creation page
When your campaign is using XP, you'll regularly earn experience points for accomplishing tasks in the game (most commonly by defeating monsters).
When you get enough XP, you level up.
Milestone focuses on the story instead, and the DM simply has you level up when you've completed some major event in the story (like defeating a boss).
Are you creating your character on D&D Beyond, though?
If so, that whole first page of settings is something you should discuss with your DM.
yeah
If you don't have a DM yet, feel free to just skip that page.
ight
Leave them all at their defaults, and you can come back and change them later if needed.
After you create a character, there's an option in their character settings that will let you enable Homebrew Content for that character.
And then you'll also need access to whatever homebrew options you want to use.
Yeah I have that enabled but I'm trying to generate the options from scratch at the moment
That's not done on the character sheet.
You can open the main menu and select Collections > Browse & Create Homebrew.
#ddb-support can help if you have any further questions.
Oh ok thanks I'll check that!
what do i do when it wants me to set hp
if someone would dm me i need help on characture creation
I'd go back to that first page of character settings and switch "Hit Point Type" back to "Fixed".
Unless your DM told you to roll for HP.
i dont have a dm i am very new
Then yeah, just leave that whole first page at the default settings.
But to give you an actual answer here:
ok i have no idea in which order to do things
Each character has a hit point die (or hit die for short).
The size of that die depends on your class.
ok the class i chose was barbarian
Hi, Iâm extremely new to dnd, can anyone have tips when creating a character and the best program to do it
Cool. So barbs use a d12 for their hit die.
At level 1, every character starts with the max number on that die (in your case, a 12).
And then you add your constitution modifier to that as well.
That's your hit point maximum.
are there any pre built worlds that i can give to our newcomer dm and play that for the first time ? (the entire group including me is a newcomer to dnd)
When you level up, you roll the die (or take the average) and add your CON modifier again.
The Fixed option in D&D Beyond uses that average to automatically calculate your hit points.
my hit point max is 12
Welcome! I like creating my characters on D&D Beyond (the official site), but there's lots of other options out there, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters
at least i think it is
Quite a few, yeah! If you're all brand new, you might consider getting the Starter Set, which is specifically designed for newcomers.
https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/category/starter-set?pid=SRC-00094
If you're a barbarian with a +0 Constitution modifier, then 12 sounds right.
well guess what the place i live dnd dont exist at all in all 30 ppl maybe 1 has heard of it so i doubt i could get my hands on the starter set and tbh i have been hand crafting everything rn and finding sources to the rules and character sheets and dm screens and all that so yeah ..... budget is basically homebrewed to the max
Gotcha. If you're just looking for free resources, there's always the Forgotten Realms wiki, which details basically the current "default" setting for D&D.
https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
yeah thanks for that but what im really looking for is a pre generated story that we could use to get a true grasp and feeling for the game and how it runs
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
- Baldur's Gate 3 Set
- Baldur's Gate Gazeteer
- Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth
- Giants of the Star Forge
- Honor Among Thieves Bundle
- Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden Dice Set
- Intro to Stormwreck Isle
- LEGO: Red Dragon's Tale
- Lightning Keep
- Monstrous Compendium Volume Two: Dragonlance Monsters
- Prisoner 13
- Unearthed Arcana Playtesting
âď¸ There's a couple sprinkled in here.
Descent, Giants, Intro, LEGO, Lightning, and Prisoner are all adventures.
Yeah. There was a big LEGO set released a couple months ago, so they put out a free adventure for it.
damn nice
There's also Frozen Sick.
hi
If you are doing this in dnd beyond you can watch this video that goes overseas the character builder: https://youtu.be/vgXhB0YTS08?si=ZK0vmPoVkIm1XSwU
This video goes over rouge, however it is very similar to choosing any other class: https://youtu.be/vgXhB0YTS08?si=ZK0vmPoVkIm1XSwU
i'm trying to figure this gc out đ
hmmm which one is simplest tho i doubt u would have read and know all of them so yeah i dont really expect an answer and thats all right
what type of life style would be good for a nomad who travels alone
so a drifter
Lifestyle is campaign dependent and you may not always use that mechanic so you can skip it for now.
k
Intro to Stormwreck Isle and Frozen Sick both start at level one.
Frozen is probably a bit meatier than Intro.
hmm i see, interesting indeed
Which may be good or bad depending on what you're after.
well what im after is just to play dnd thats all
do i need to use a weapon as a barbarian if so what class specializes in hand to hand combat
Monks are typically the primary unarmed combatant.
You can also find dozens of free D&D Adventurers League modules here on dnd beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/d-d-adventurers-league/1664-d-d-adventurers-league
im looking for one with good strength
But there are certain barbarian builds that can do it, too.
are the barbarians fast
nyo ho! i will make sure to use this as well
Fighters can also fight hand to hand through the unarmed fighting style.
Your base speed will depend on your race/species, but barbarians do get a speed boost at level 5.
(Monks similarly get a speed boost.)
whats the best race for unarmed combat
Nowadays any race pairs well with any class. Particularly because now races give you the option choosing which stats get the racial bonus.
race? if you are not using the unarmed fighting style then something with natural weapons
is that worse or better than just one
It's usually recommended that new players avoid multiclassing.
It can be fairly complex, and a new player may accidentally make a very weak combination of classes.
it's not worse.
if you mutliclass you'll be OK at more stuff
if you single stuff you'll be very good at certain stuff
don't multiclass
so for unarmed should i do fighter or monk
up to you. whichever you like most
Monk is the more classic of the two for unarmed combat.
Multi classing is not recommended for new players because requires more to learn at once and can end up resulting in a character that isnât very good with their abilities.
An unarmed fighter will be more like the big tough guy who beats his opponents down
An unarmed monk will be more like the nimble martial artist who strikes at weak points and darts around the battlefield
There's other considerations. You'd have to take the unarmed fighting style and eventually find a way to make your unarmed strikes magical if you were to go fighter over monk
im not seeing unarmed as a fighting style on the option list
With the upcoming updates for monks, some of the the things that originally require strength , such as grapples, can now be done with dexterity if you are a monk.
Unarmed Fighting Style is part of Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Unarmed fighting style is not in the PHB/Basic rules. You need to purchase Tasha's Cauldron of Everything to use it
im sorry? wtf is thaaaaaat
Tashaâs is another book.
never mind then i have some stuff in the back le me check
If all you have is the free basic rules, then stick to monks.
i have the starter set the players handbook the essentials it and brass/copper dy somewhere
In general you will have a much easier time if look at the content you have available to you and use that to build your character
Hi
Hi, i'm totally new and I started a character sheet (hill dwarf, fighter) but i have no idea how to craft a backstory or motivations ? if anyone have any tips, it's the first time i'm on a discord server
Hey guys which proficiencies are the best?

For character backstories and motivations these three videos by Ginny Di can help .
The first covers common pitfalls players can fall when coming up with a backstory: https://youtu.be/S1YW7oUzs0s
The second focuses on guidelines you can use for character goals for proactive roleplaying: https://youtu.be/DXUnEk4cuYI?si=WSZSR2BII3jwsvED
The third is about Ginny re-creating her character using the insights she's gain over the years as a player and GM: https://youtu.be/QnFStvEOVcA?si=P-I33-AV5oZSi-t3
Of all proficiencies or just skill proficiencies? The former is more open ended, generally whatever your class gives you is good enough though Armor proficiencies are generally nicer to have than to not.
In terms of skill proficiencies generally Perception, Athletics, and Stealth are generally more common in my experience, but they're not necessary to have. What matters more is what proficiencies you have in comparison to your teammates. Overlap is fine, of course, but I think a party that can cover each others weaknesses is better
Armor proficiencies? There are no defensive proficiencies, they all do stuff like taming animals or having better senses
Proficiencies are not just for skills. You also have armor, tool, weapon, game, and vehicle proficiencies
Huh?
Have you read the free basic rules yet?
How do you apply proficiencies to equipment, and how exactly do the vehicles work?
Proficiency means the same thing for almost everything you can have proficiency (the exception is armor proficiencies).
Proficiency in something means you can add your proficiency bonus to the relevant check. For skills its when you need to make a skill check. For weapons its when you make an attack. For games/tools/vehicles its when you need to make a check to use them.
Armor Proficiencies work slightly differently since you don't really make any checks with armor. Instead if you try to wear an armor you're not proficient in you have disadvantage on Strength & Dexterity ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls, and you'd be unable to cast spells.
Where do I apply tool proficiencies? In the character creator?
If your character will get any tool proficiencies it will be in the character creator, yes. Not every race/class/background gets tool proficiencies however
Does Human fighter folk hero get tool proficiencies?
Default Human doesn't get any tool proficiencies, but Variant Human can if you use their racial ability to get the Skilled Feat.
Fighter doesn't get any tool proficiencies.
Folk Hero gets proficiency in Land Vehicles and a single artisan tool of your choice
All of it should be detailed in the relevant sections of the basic rules
Oh that explains why I didn't get the land vehicle. It was just a proficiency
Also, isn't this game in a medieval fantasy setting? What vehicles would even be there?
Vehicles refers to either carts, horses, and carriages by land, or boats and ships by water
Horse? That's a living animal
Anyways, my main reason to be here is that I'm looking for a campaign

?
I am just curious
I don't understand what you mean
D&D has a set list of options for what you can pick from for your character's race, class, and other abilities and such. You can try to make a character based on whatever you like, but you'll need to keep it within the boundries of the rules of the game

Hey does anyone know of a good website where you can import a map and then use like counters on it as the characters, I tried roll 20 and it was just to complicated for what I wanted to do
Owlbear Rodeo is pretty straightforward.
D&D Beyondâs Maps is even easier, if youâve got a subscription.
I have them all saved to my pc, does owl bear allow import?
Yep!
Awesome Iâll check that out thank you so much !
Hello
Guys how do I change my DnD prof pic
hi
small question: how do you know if your character is right with the story of dnd?
Theirs no "story of dnd"
Each DM and each table has their own lore
their own universe and restrictions
But generally, sticking to the PHB is a good idea that will work in a generality of campaigns
Oh ok. Thank you
are there any good discord servers where people are running one shots, i want to try out the new discord roll 20 but i do not have time for a full campaign
Look into westmarch servers
Hello,I'm completely new i've never touched DnD before but it seems interesting so i want to try the game, but im unsure where to start. Should i start with Baldur's Gate 3? Should i go straight for the game or something else?
Baldurs gate is a verry fun way to learn the mechanics
But BG3 is not a place to learn table ethics, only pure game mechanics
Thats still improvement for me i've never touched anything related except the movie, so should i go for the game?
Only if you think youll have fun with it!
It is not a required step to learn dnd
I wouldn't try it if i wasn't interested in the game too. So its less of choosing whether to play, its more to wait or not.
Sure then go for it,its a good game
its more fun with friends thought
Thanks for the help.
Oh okay

Hey, glad to hear you've taken an interest from BG3. While there are many similarities, the rules are quite different in a lot of ways, so checking out the rules in the above botpost is a great place to start
When you feel comfortable feel free to check out #find-a-game for this server's place for getting players into games
I read up on the rules and played an interactive tutorial but now I am wondering what do I need ready before I try and jump into a online campaign? Should I already have a character sheet?
You can give character creation a go, its a good thing to practice but not necessary
if you feel comfrotable with the rules then beginning your search for a game on #find-a-game , subreddits, facebook pages, or roll20 is the next step
Do you mind if I ask what would you do personally to find an online game?
I dont often play onlline. And when I do its because an in-person game is forced to go digital. If I was looking for an online game I would be looking in as many different places at once to speed the process up and get a broad variety of options for tables to join
Thank you so much!
Hey, I'm completely new to D&D. I was recommended by some friends that this is a good place to explore basics of character writing and roleplay/acting? Like I am trying to build a portfolio and have character design and art; but my characters are currently appearance-only. I wanted to give them goals, personality, narrative role in a plot.
Are there any templates or guides for narrative writing like for a character you create ? Or plot structures ?
I assume the Dungeon Master is the plot. And then the players "act" as characters they create for the story ?
Mainly trying to make some of the characters I drew more than just appearances but also having personality/ goals/ story behind?
I've never played D&D and am not sure if this is the best fit. I'm interested in any groups that are more roleplay focused ?
Those are some good questions.
The DM acts as the world and everyone/everything in it, whereas each player typically assumes control of one character. The DM describes the situation. Players tell the DM what they want their characters to do, dice are possibly rolled to determine success/failure, the DM narrates the result. Lather, rinse, repeat. While the DM tries to prepare some material for players to interact with, players also shape the narrative by their decisions; plus, the dice can send events in a new direction. The result is a collaboratively fashioned story with multiple hands on the steering wheel, as it were.
If you search YouTube for how to write a D&D character's backstory, you'll get a variety of advice for how to approach it. There's no one-size-fits-all method. A popular framework on this server is the three-sentence backstory: 1) Where are you from? 2) What shaped your history? 3) Why do you adventure? While you can do this on your own, part of the appeal of tabletop is working collaboratively so that the character you play fits the specific game you join.
You can certainly find groups that focus more on roleplay, but D&D isn't the only tabletop RPG out there! A big part of D&D is about killing monsters. You can definitely inhabit a character by playing it, but the game does fit into the heroic fantasy genre, meaning it's not suited to tell any sort of story.
That's a lot of blather, but I hope it helps clarify things a little!

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnât competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The bot posts above provide great resources, including some free adventures you can run.

thank you Mr Smith
@wild onyx i was making my character as a variant Human, and i got a question about languages
What's the question?
does each race has it own language? or do they speak in one in particular?
I too have a question
Common is the common tongue that many humanoids are conversant with. Many races have their own languages too, such as elves and dwarves and giants and orcs.
how the hell does a tiefling work? as in am I born of a demon and a human? Or is it a bloodline thing?
At some point in the tiefling's ancestry, fiendish influence entered the bloodline. There can be many ways for this to happen.
thanks man!
alright, to be genuine with you I picked the race for the +2 charisma
could someone mayhaps look at my character to see if it is at least playable?
Pop over to #character-discussion and share what you've got.
thank you mr smith
Hello, I'm new here and new to D&D (mostly). Happy to be in this community đ
Welcome!
Is there any DMâs looking for newbies??
@burnt grail if you look in #looking-for-players you can find posts that were made by groups looking for a player. in #looking-for-dm you can make a post saying that you want a DM. #find-a-game explains the it better than me lol
Thanks
Besides the excellent links Zero shared, youâll want to give the Basic Rules a read. This guide is also pretty clear and succinct: https://howtogm.guide

Hello I'm new to dnd I would like to ask how do homebrew spells work?
To simplify: Intelligence is knowledge and the ability to recall/memorize information. Wisdom is intuition and your senses. Charisma is your force of will/personality.
Homebrew spells work the way the spell's description say they work. But whether homebrew is allowed or not is up to the DM. It's also not recommended for newcomers, making it not suitable for this channel.
Roleplay doesn't necessarily have to reflect stats.
Thematically speaking:
Intelligence is your ability to know and recall information, as well as your ability to figure things out given a set of clues
Wisdom is your ability to observe your surrounding and make inferences about things
Charisma is your ability to convince people of things, either truthfully or deceptively, as well as your ability to perform in front of a crowd
Mechanically speaking:
Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma are stats, and the rule will tell you when to use them and what to use them for. You might have to make an ability check using one of these stats, or a saving throw. Depending on what class you are playing, you might use one or more of these stats for certain abilities. For example, clerics use Wisdom for their spellcasting, while Wizards use Intelligence
In roleplay:
Don't feel like you are bound to role play based on whatever your stats are. Your stats are a mechanical aspect of your character which help or hinder you at succeeding at certain things, but when you are just talking to other characters or going about your character's life, you can have whatever personality or character traits you like. If your character has 9 Intelligence, you can still role play them as super smart if you want. It will just be mechanically harder for you to pass intelligence based ability checks and such. But reading a book or answering someone's question doesn't always require an ability check
Stats are game mechanics to help the game run
The actual character is more than just the game stats
Hi I'm new
Many people have different opinions about what the "correct" way to play D&D is, but the only correct way to play the game is whatever makes it the most fun for you. Stats help facilitate success or failure at certain things, but they do not dictate your personality or character traits. Some people will try to "role play their stats" as a way of making it easier on themselves if they are struggling to figure out what their character's personality is, or what they would do in a certain situation. But even if you do want to use it as a guideline, you're not forced into it, and its not a rule
Many people have different opinions about what the "correct" way to play D&D is, but the only correct way to play the game is whatever makes it the most fun for you.
To Colossus's very good point I'd add "for you and your table."
Yep.
Yes
Again stats don't "make" the character.
There are some mechanical impacts in some cases but they are ususally spelled out by the thing that is causing a ability score reduction.
Generally though lower stats just mean lower chances of success on ability check rolls with those abilities or skills - but remember characters aren't supposed to be the best at all the things. You're playing with a party and other characters can assist or fill in those "weak" points of your character.
Having a low charisma score means your bad at convincing or persuading people to do things. If you wanted to role play your stats, this might mean your character comes off as gruff or grumpy, or it might mean you get nervous in social situations, or it might mean you're just not great at stringing together your word. But if you don't want to role play your stats, then you can just ignore it. When your DM asks you to make a persuasion or deception check, you'll have a little bit lower chance of success than average, but that doesn't have to mean you're stumbling over your words or acting mean.
Basically what we've told you. That they don't
You can also look for people who have similar ideas and expectations about the game that you do. There are so many people playing out there.
It affects your chance at success. Whether incorporate that into your role play or not is up to you
stupid teams
What's wrong?
Correct. If you have to make a charisma based ability check, such as a persuasion check or a deception check, you'll have a lower chance at success than normal.
But game mechanics and role play are two seperate things
Some people would use their ability scores to influence how they act out their character and some people donât; itâs really a personal choice and one to talk with the DM about
If you make a persuasion check and fail, that doesn't have to mean the speech was bad, it just means it didn't convince the person you were trying to convince
Hi
Thematically (purely flavor), low charisma means your character might be awkward, aloof, or otherwise lacks a force of personality. Mechanically, it is reflected in having a less of a chance at succeeding on Charisma based checks.
If you have the a low charisma score, then when you have to make a charisma check or saving throw, you'll have a lower chance of success. That is the ONLY thing it does, mechanically
Nothing is stopping you from doing that.
Most conversations your character has will not involve making a charisma check at all
Language has nothing to do with charisma
Your character can act however you want them to
You can have a charisma of 10 and take profs in charisma skills to give you a slight bonus
Ability checks are only made when you do something that has a chance of either success or failure. If something will always succeed or always fail, then you do not make an ability check. So, if youâre just talking to someone, like youâre discussing the weather or buying a meal or planning what quest to take or whatever, then you wonât need to make an ability check for that, which means your charisma score does not affect it.
The only time youâll need to actually use your charisma score is if something could either succeed or fail, like asking someone for help, or lying to the guard to get out of a crime or something like that, then you will need to make either a persuasion or deception check. And like I said before, if you make a check and fail, it does not mean you were rude to them or spoke poorly or were super nervous. It just means what you said didnât convince them. Why it didnât convince them is up to you and your DM
If you're a bird person, do you take disadvantage when flying AND attacking at the same time?
Not unless the rule that lets you fly says so.
There are various player races that have a flying speed, and none of them give disadvantage on attacks while flying
Ok I was thinking of an archery guy that flies as a character. Trying to see if there was a loop hole against me
They often prevent you from using medium or heavy armor.
But again: you'll have to read the specific rule to see what the limits are, if any.
The primary dangers of flying are being knocked prone (you fall from the sky) or being restrained (again you fall from the sky). So being 40 feet in the air has it's dangers
Not to mention getting knocked unconscious! You'll be closer to death after hitting the ground and taking the fall damage.
same thing
Then find a way to factor in History proficiency.
you get 2 from your class and 2 from your background
So one of your background proficiencies could be history
You can also pick up the Skill Expert feat to get expertise (and proficiency) in a skill
Anybody have tips for a first time DM?
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:

This is good advice (https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet), but I think you should read that whole guide.
This is my short list of recommendations: â #dnd-newcomers message
Search the server for dm tips and/or dm advice and you'll find even more!
Thank you as well
A feat represents a talent or an area of expertise that gives a character special capabilities. It embodies training, experience, and abilities beyond what a class provides.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/customization-options#Feats
In a way, I guess?
At certain levels, characters get what's known as an Ability Score Improvement.
It is somewhat comparable
to perks in other kinds of games yeah
By default, that lets you increase your Ability Scores by two points.
Alternatively, you can forego that increase to choose a Feat.
They're somewhat like class or race features, but each one is its own independent thing.
So much like your class and race features, they let you do something you couldn't do before.
Improving your ability scores often increases the power of your existing abilities.
But feats are definitely more fun.
There is indeed.
The Mobile feat increases your speed, and lets you ignore difficult terrain when you Dash.
And when you make an attack against someone, you can then move away without them getting an opportunity attack against you.
Hi, can someone help me? because i want make with my friends Dungeons and dragons ( board game ), and i dont know how i can make mechanicks of dungeons, bosses and characters help

Welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the free basic rules linked above. We also have a set of videos if you're more of a visual learner, and we have the #learn-to-play channel for more resources.
If you're looking for a game after having read through the rules, you can begin your search on this server in #find-a-game . Finally, if you've got any specific questions, we'll be happy to help you here!
@timid locust @uncut terrace thanks
This server also has a ton of people and rules In it which helps
alright, i read whole rules, i know the characters, but how i can make now board game? the map
Well, most of that comes to ya. There's some good sites for it from what I recall, but its worth it to make a map by hand. If you start off on a pre made campaign, they tend to come with maps.
I don't understand the question. What do you mean by "make damage mechanics"? Are you not using the normal rules of the game?
im using the normall rulles of the game, but what damage should the weapons have?
The damage that weapons deal are listed next to them in the equipment list
sorry, but what list
It can all be found from the basic rules listed in the bot post above
As in it deals 1 piercing damage.
and how many hp are bosses must have? because i dont see anything about bosses hp (im blind)
the HP of a monster depends on its challenge rating. there no single number
If you're planning on putting together an encounter for your players, it's usually recommended to use a pre-written adventure. There's a few free ones you can use.
Where are these free adventures?

and even if you make your own adventure, I advise try to stick to the encounter building rules and use official monsters when starting out. once you got a handle on how the game works, you can start making your own stuff without breaking any math by accident
Should I get Xanathars guide to everything or tasha's cauldron first?
Not really a newcomers question but... both are great books to have.
Both are good. I'd personally recommend Tasha's, though, as it has a lot of quality of life improvements.
I'd probably go Tasha's unless you really prefer the Xanathar's subclasses
Alright, #dnd-discussion then?
Yeah if it doesn't fit in any more specific channel (see #channel-guide to see all our many channels and their purpose/topic)
@main fulcrum @timid locust Alright thanks đŤĄ
hey, how i can get some items in dnd? np. sword, or spell book itp
Each class has a list of starting equipment that they get at level 1. If you want something that isn't in your starting equipment, then you will have to buy it in game, by having your character go to a shop or something of the like
you sometimes also get some as loot
It's listed under the individual character backgrounds and classes.
on any reliable source for the rules, I personally used d&d beyond, its a char builder, but will fill your inventory with starting eq
can anyone help me? but I have to send this photo and it's not possible on this channel, can someone DM me?
If you need to post an image, you can upload it to an image hosting website like Imgur, then post the link to the imgur page here
hit points ? it says 16 (if you don't roll them) or 3d6 + 6 if you do
ah, okay
so they hit 16 per hit yes?
no, its his health
no it has 16 Hit points total
the damage it does is written under the Actions section
I would highly recommend reading through the basic rules before starting to put together an encounter.
it might be confusing at first but hit point in d&d refers to health always
a
for example if it attacks with its Warpick, it will roll to hit (+4 on the attack roll) and if the roll meets or beats the Player Character's Armor Class, it will do either average damage (6) or you roll the damage (1d8+2) your choice
ooh, i see
also, CR 1/2 isnt really a tough boss for anyone unless you have less than 3 players in the group
Lv 1 max hit die plus con mod
Your HP is determined by your class
As that determines your hit dice
But yes, what Enoki noted - your level 1 HP total is your max hit dice + constitution modifier
So yep!
So 10 + con
if say your con mod is +2, you'd start with 12, and gain 1d10 + 2 every level.
Then for 2nd level you can either take the average + con or roll the 1d10 and add your con to figure out how many hit points you have at level 2
So take what you had at level one, add 1d10 + con to decide what you have for level 2 (or take the average and add your con modifier)
yes
unless your DM has specific house rules about this, you can either roll 1d10+con mod or pick the average (rounded up), which is 6+con mod per level after the first
1d10 + 2 exactly, (if your mod is 2)
level 1 is always max on the dice, all levels afterwards are rolled or average
So that would be a +2 constitution modifier
no, 10 +2 for level 1, then add 6+2 for level 2, if you take the average
if you roll, its 12 (Level 1)+ 1d10+2
are you asking what the total of 10+2+6+2 is?
because you will need to do basic math like this on the fly multiple times per dnd session
Are you building this character on dndbeyond?
Then Dndbeyond will do the simple math for you
10+2+6+2=20, yes
Is there a DnD way to make your own healing pots?
Xanathar's Guide to Everything has rules for crafting, but generally any crafting of items requires DM review/approval.
Darn. Ok thanks
i wanted to print cheat sheets for my players for our first session this sunday... i accidentaly asked for A3 prints, now they have normal character sheets, and their spell sheets are huge, as well as their cheat sheets
i'd send pics if i could
You can use an image/file hosting service and link to that
But printing mistakes happen - I wouldn't worry about it.
I was watching these videos and one said you need to make a character for a book or game.
What about the opposite?
Like what if you wanted to shoehorn in a fantasy character you've been dying to play to any story.
Or what if for whatever reason you submit your My Hero Academia OC? And wanted to roleplay as them in the story?
Can you clarify what you mean?
In those instances you'll either need find a campaign that is already compatible with that type of character or find a group that wants to build a campaign fits that kind of character.
Keep in mind, that will be more difficult to find.
D&D has a set list of options for what you can pick from for your character's race, class, and other abilities and such. You can try to make a character based on whatever you like, but you'll need to keep it within the boundries of the rules of the game
If you want to create a D&D character thatâs based on or inspired by something from another form of media, itâs important to remember that youâre making a D&D character first and foremost. Itâs best to think of it like âwhat would this character be like, and what powers would they have, if they lived in the world of D&D instead of their own world.â You canât always just port them over 1 for 1
My main goal is to figure out how to write and roleplay characters or OC I have draw of but not much writing for
I just have images but no like text ?
I'm sort of new to all this so I might not be using correct terminology
I'd also add that trying to to shoehorn a character that doesn't fit in a particular campaign tends to disregard the the work a Dungeon Master put into creating the campaign setting.
For roleplay, what has helped me is creating various goals that can help me as a player guide my characters actions during play,
Agreed. Itâs important to make characters that fit into the world youâll be playing in. If your want to play a character that went to UA High and studied to be a professional hero, but those arenât a thing in your DMâs world, then you might run into issues
One of the books I've been reading has provided a good example.
The TLDR is that the PC's sister was kidnapped by the fey and replaced by a changeling. However, 20 years later, he has received a message from where in a dream that she is still alive.
So the character has a long term goal to find his kidnapped sister.
While he has two short term goals, The first, find a way into the Feywild and figure how she was able to send a mesage via a dream.
This give the DM two NPCs that they can use to initiate roleplay and help guide the story. While it gives the player the opportunity to have the character to follow any paths that mention dreams, the fey, or the feywild.
My OC Yomi is a second year at UA and wants to be picked up by a hero agency to spread awareness of the danger certain quirks can cause on one's own body. She has no superpowers or combat abilities what's so ever, she is just required to anchor herself because she was born with no mass and constantly floats upwards and was actually related to Uraraka.
Now I want a character like this in a setting that has nothing to do with My Hero. Is there a D&D roleplay setting where this works ?
(This is just an off the top of the head random idea)
In general the power system and fantasy of MHA is significantly different than that of D&D (as are most manga/anime universes) so youâd probably have difficulty directly translating your OC into 5e rules. It may be better to find the closest analogs to your character using actual character options (i.e. Stain could be a Paladin that makes liberal use of the Hold Person spell). The easiest translation will generally be your OCâs personality, which is usually setting agnostic and therefore easily swappable to different universes.
Is D&D the only roleplay format, what are other types? Is there some commonality or general guidelines to all Table RPG?
You'll have better luck with a superhero TTRPG such as MASKS a new generation or The Marvel Multiverse TTRPG.
D&D is one of many TTRPGs. There are superhero based ones such as Mutants & Masterminds. If youâre talking about the format of the game itself, D&D can be played online or in-person with a few special styles such as Play-By-Post (PBP) games (text-only, asynchronous) and Westmarch games (semi-asynchronous, multi-DM ventures with many more players than usual), or Oneshots (single session adventures)
Another off the top of my head example is Shyvana from League of Legends. What if I wanted to roleplay as her.
In League of Legends she doesn't have much motivation or goal at all. She is just "impulsive, brash, assertive, immature" half dragon who comes off as a bully.
(I'm just giving many random character ideas).
Shyvana is an example of a character who basically only exists as an appearance for the majority of people. She just has appearance but no real writing or plot
Would I find a DM or group first and build a character for that world ?
Or post several characters I want to roleplay and see if they get picked up?
I'm completely new to this and mainly am curious about roleplay. Not about the math and numbers. (But I will still do basic numbers)
D&D is first and foremost a game of math and numbers, with roleplay on top to give it some flavor.
If you aren't interested in that part, there are lots of other systems you can google that focus much more on roleplay and less on rules/numbers
Your best approach is to find a DM/Group firs and build a character that you'll enjoy playing, your fellow players will enjoy playing along with, and your DM will enjoy DMing for.
The first approach leans towards good communication and establishing healthy group dynamics.
Hi im new to dnd could someone please explain the basics to me?

Welcome! #learn-to-play has some basic info to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
Maybe just some tips since Im meant to be playing soon
Ive played a similar game to dnd which my friend made but that was once a year ago
There is a section called Basic Rules in the quick links in the linked post, it doesn't get any more basic than that my friend.
What are some games more about roleplay but still with math numbers. Just not a focus on math numbers
(Also what about Magic the Gathering characters? Could I play as Garruk, or Nissa or Chandra ? Like their level one version ?)
How can I get a game going here in discord.. I know a little about howâs itâs ran and what not. Just looking to join a campaign
Im a little new, Ive watched people play before and own the players handbook but never played before. Before I look for an online session should I already have a premade character?
You should know how to make a character. It's not a bad idea to come to the table with general character concepts rather than fleshed out/built specific characters.
Games aren't held on the server. If you're a DM, you can post in #looking-for-players to advertise the game you want to run. If you're a player, you can post an ad for yourself in #looking-for-dm. Doing either requires following the instructions in #find-a-game.
If you're asking how to play D&D online, this article should help: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
#non-dnd-topics would be the best place to ask about other non-D&D tabletop games!
Where would you recommend I search for my first TT RPG experience ? Like where I get my first DM ?
I am a bit worried if I just pick a random one as I won't have any clue what is to look for
I wanted to ask about one of these videos again where they go into detail explaining Adventurers are "level 1" and this "level 1" shows they have more superpower/magic than the average commoners. But could you create a character that is a commoner ? Like a Bard who doesn't fight at all. Or like a Chef? Or like just a character that is more into politics ?
Is combat the only method of gaining EXP? Can a character just "not do combat" ?
D&D does have a leveling system; as you gain experience (or reach milestones in the storyline), you'll gain levels, which entail new abilities and features. The game really excels at the heroic fantasy adventuring party, exploring, going on quests, and killing monsters. Barring DM approval, you'll pick a specific class (https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes) and combat will almost certainly be part of the game; how your character participates in it is another story.
You can play a support character, and some games do have less of a focus on combat, but combat is one of the core pillars of the game since it appeals to a semi-specific image of fantasy. Classes like Bard are great for supporting allies when things get tough.
True pacifist characters might not work at every table, since when push comes to shove having someone actively not participate in any way (meaning not using support stuff either) will generally drag the team down
I'm opening my starter set now!
So like the example of that My Hero Academia OC can't translate to D&D because that character has no powers. Its a character with a power that would be more harmful than helpful to self (like uncontrolable levitation)
And if the character has no intention of combat in their backstory/personality, probably it cannot be do much.
Shyvana probably can work if use her as a base for create a first character in D&D or something? Like translate something like that into D&D?
Characters from any media rarely translate to D&D neatly because they were made without the same restrictions. It can be loosely done, but it's always an act of translation, not direct importing.
Well no powers could be represented by not being able to cast magic. You generally canât just give your characters âpowersâ even if theyâre not helpful like uncontrollable levitation.
But I could intentionally make a useless character and make the character's backstory/narrative explain why they are less powerful?
Remember D&D is a team game. Would every player like to play with someone âuseless?â
One thing about D&D (and any tabletop game) is that it's a social game, meaning you should pull your weight in the game. It's not just about your fun but about everyone's fun.
It's easy for new folks to see it as a game of imagination and assume you can do anything, but really, it has rules to facilitate certain sorts of gameplay and stories. Like you can't be a shopkeep in Elden Ring because that's not how it's designed. D&D's design similarly enables certain ways of playing and disincentivizes others. D&D has flexibility to it, but remaking the system in major ways would be a ton of work.
It's not a class, but you can describe your character however you like, provided the rest of the table accepts it.
You can absolutely make a character thatâs purely narratively self-limiting, like lacking confidence or knowledge. Being given a power however is a mechanical device which holds larger implications since it can lead to outcomes that circumvent the rules. For example, uncontrollable levitation could be easily manipulated into being able to being able to reach high areas or scout ahead, circumventing normal features you can have such as flight, the fly spell, and more.
And Chef can be a great narrative reflavor of some abilities. For the record reflavoring is changing the narrative description of an ability without changing the mechanics. Itâs often said flavor is free, but flavor does have limits (i.e. wanting to flavor your garb as Sailor Moon attire when the game takes place in a dark fantasy setting). Itâs always good to clear any reflavors with your DM.
Using a chef framework, you can pick a spellcaster and flavor your spells and abilities around food. For example, you could say that you cast the spell Aid via giving your teammates a morsel of food to boost their durability. As a bard, your spellcasting focus could be a drum flavored as a giant mixing bowl. You might also consider taking the Chef feat (feats are special character abilities you can choose to gain at certain levels, Iâd look into the basic rules to learn more about feats).
hey! i am currently working on creating my first character and wanted to do a dual class between a monk and a rogue. i was curious if anyone else has experience with a character like this and has any advice
Youâd want DEX, CON, and WIS as your highest scores, and youâd probably want to use shortswords to capitalize on both Martial Arts and Sneak Attack.
Multiclassing can be tricky, though, especially if itâs your first character.
What specifically are you looking to get out of that combo?
my idea was to have a character who was brought up in a monastery and still wants to strive for peace and justice. she gets frustrated with the peaceful approach the other monks praise since she grew up in a war struck place and sees how ineffective peace is without any sort of violence if that makes sense
Actually, youâd need at least a 13 each in DEX and WIS to even be able to take both classes.
so she's willing to do whatever it takes so no other kids have to grow up like her, main focus is monk but some rogueish behavior if that makes sense. almost like an antihero maybe?
Rogueish behavior doesnât necessarily require levels in the Rogue class.
i was thinking aarakocra for the race to help with that, also with the kind of gray world view this character has
Your characterâs personality can be whatever you like, regardless of your class.
i am new and there is so much info (love) but from what i've seen monks are mostly peacekeeping focused right? like she would be the dirty side of the monastery if that makes sense
i'm just trying to figure things out sorry if it doesn't make much sense
They donât have to be.
They can be peaceful or combative. Depends on the game and the world you're in đ
Multiclassing is largely a mechanical choice, sacrificing power for versatility.
i'm not in a campaign yet although i want to be! i'll probably join one here but i wanted to have a character made up and a backstory kind of fleshed out first lol
that makes sense
Youâre ultimately giving up the strongest abilities in one class for the weakest abilities in another.
gotcha
In some cases, you can find complementary abilities that allow for some really unique combinations.
^ this and your character can really be anything you want them to be. Generally, your best bet is making something you love and a character that will participate in and be part of the group
But Iâd generally recommend multiclassing only if thereâs a mechanical incentive.
okay!!
If itâs just the story holding you back, then you can simply change the story.
thank y'all for the help so far! there's a lot that goes into making a character and it's definitely confusing lol
Thatâs another benefit to sticking with one class: thereâs a lot less to learn.
definitely lol
Feel free to ask any other questions as they come up!
Mainly roleplaying (there's not a lot of mechanical rules in D&D for them, it's often up to DM discretion)
Musical instruments for RP and tools for RP too but also crafting
ah okay!
i tried looking it up but i can't really find an explanation of what each one means. do y'all know somewhere i can look it up?
The free basic rules should have them listed... let me see if I can get a URL directly to the spot...
Ah here we go: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#Tools
thank you!!
Usually you find a game before making a character
As each dm has their own character rules and lore
For exemple, DM 1 may not like multiclassing, DM 2 might now allow artificer,DM 3 may be running a verry lore specific campaign about magic
etc etc
What is the average price I should expect to pay to play D&D ?
Like some Dungeon Master charge money per week
Well normally 0?
If you're starting the hobby you should start with free dnd games
So you make sure you like the hobby first before buying in
fair! i am just a very indecisive person so i wanted to have like one or two characters just to send to the dm! then they can tell me what i should change
like just a basic build out character and some idea of a backstory to make it easier
Thats fair, may I send ya a message if you dont mind?
yeah ofc!
Hi just wanted to say hi and introduce myself! Always wanted to play but I live in the middle of a cornfield basically 𤣠so thought Iâd learn more and maybe make friends here
Online play is a great solution if you cant find peeps to play in person!
Yeah I think thatâs going to have to be the move. Our towns game store closed and the closest adventurers league (I think thatâs what itâs called) is over an hour away đ idk how many people would want to play with someone completely inexperienced though
Alotta people run newcommers games
hell im running one right now, just go in #find-a-game and look at the posts
Awesome thatâs really great to hear! Iâll check it out
Make sure to read the instructions carefully
Hold on Zero has a great paragraph on how to find online games
ill see if I can find it and copy paste it here
!online
Well I tried
I appreciate it anyways! Lol
XD
I cant remember Zero's exact name so I didnt find the paragraph
But hey I sent you a pm, if you have any questions just ping me or message me
Or a team member of the mod team
Well no you cant ping them but like you can ask them for help when they're present in the chat
Remember,dnd is a team game!
Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
Hey dude do you remember the command for the whole "play online" paragraph?
Id need it right about now
?tag new online
I think if I were to make a Chef Bard Politician who does nothing it would still give the party perks even if I wanted it to be useless. I would have to be a wizard actively casting fireball on allies for no reason to be "not a teammate"?
The Bard would give allies +6 bonus or something by just "being in their presence"
If I do literally nothing the DM will probably do something like that no ?
Not doing anything is also not being a teamate
Thank you
...No?
Thanks you guys! Iâll have to check all this out
Thats called an Aura and only Paladins have those
And even then its not as drastic
Hihi
Hi đđť
Welcome to the hobby, check the pin messages for the whole introduction thing
How dose one start
I'm trying to learn So I can spread it to my homies, so we can play those anime ones or whatever
What do you mean by anime ones?
I was looking up online, that's not like a Naruto, Bleach, homebrew
Me and my friends do our own thing with the rolling bot So I decided I should try to learn it and then show them how its done, then, so we could probably do it
Dnd doesnât really translate to anime very well but if you and your friends are having fun doing it go for it
Basic rules and videos guides are linked in the pins
I'm very much so a Visual learner I just hope that videos aren't too confusing
Some of the youtube videos i've been watching been trying to watch just yapping to much
Or a ramble
The handbooker helper ones are quite good and to the point
hallo
hi i am new and was wondering if i could get in contact with a dm so i could learn the basics
Have you looked at the basic rules?
hello, im looking at doing D&D but im a beginner and i have no experience what so ever, im looking for someone to help me through my journey. maybe even play a few short games to help me understand.

i have only talked about playing and have never play an actual game, willing to learn and try new things, im 22
Power lvls and abilities, it can be done but takes a lot of homebrew IMO
Why don't you look over this and try putting a character together for practice?

so i'm still really confused on how range works. so i see a javeling that a tridrone has atm: it has "30/120" range. does that mean it has advantage anywhere from 30 -> 120 feet? and then disadvantage outside of that?
Close! It's a normal attack to to the first range. Past that, up to the second number, it's with disadvantage. You can't attack further than the second range listed.
ohhh i see tysm!
hello i'm new to dnd and want to know somthings before my first session
What do you want to know?
Hello, sorry to disturb, however i was wondering how i can see how much time has passed after i posted in find-dm channel?
i think a week and a few hours passed but i am not sure and unable to write
Hi everyone. I'm very lost lol đ
I'm not sure where to find games a d to submit the Information
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
The #looking-for channels are not for normal dicussions. Instead you use the bot command to create posts in a specified channel (see #find-a-game to learn how to do this). Once the bot creates a post for you, you may not post again in the channel via the bot for 7 days. Once the 7 days are up, the bot will remove your previous posting and you can post again.
Use Discord's serach in that channel to find your post.
Good day fellas, is it always hard to find a game for a newbie?
As hard as any social endeavor when you're new to the scene I suppose.
Just be patient, keep looking, keep demonstrating to the community that you're a good fit... and you'll eventually find the right group/game for you.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Most groups are fine taking on a new to D&D player as long as they show they've put in work to try and learn the game on their own (so the rest of the group doesn't have to spend their valuable game time teaching you all the things) and that fits the vibe of the group.
Yeah, that sound good, ill keep working on the knowledge part then
Things you can do to improve your chances:
- Use HammerTime to showcase your availability: https://hammertime.cyou/
- The tool displays a time stamp in viewers own timezone.
- This avoid any confusion regarding Time Zone
- Ask the Game Master what makes the game fun for them.
- Show that their fun also matters and that they are not just there to entertain the group.
- Mention what aspects of the campaign you find interesting.
- Anything that highlights that you took time to read the game ad goes a long way.
Thanks for the info, lets just hope DM`s will answers me because for now i had no luck, but fingers crossed
Well a lot of the times DMs will get applications in the double digits.
If youâre also just responding with just âIâm interestedâ youâre going to blend in with all the other replies.
Also started a discussion with DMs here: #dm-discussion message
The responses from DMs will provide some insight.
Oh no i dont do that, i actually DM ppl saying that im new and that i am interested in their campaign and would love to join, just so they know that i will probably have a lot of questions, but still 90% is just ignoring me, It would be cool to at least say "NO".
If DMs get dozens of responses, they wonât always be able to respond to every applicant.
Even if youâre just saying youâre new, youâre interested, and would love to join , that too can blend in with other responses.
Itâs more effective to mention specifics about a campaign posting. Some DMs, myself included, will add something in the listing to filter out applicants.
Yea i did read about your "Tangerine" strat, i actually never seen someone use it. But yea, i guess ill try to word myself better when dming someone.
During Covid I would run free one shot's on Roll20 and I would often get 50+ applicants lol. I rarely responded to any unless I was accepting them to the game. Just too much.
Even if it doesnât include instructions or questions to answer, anything that shows you took the time to read a DMâs post will go a long way.
in the character sheet in the middle there is a place for attacks and spell casting does it mean i can only use 3 attacks at all times since there is only 3 slots and like carry only 3 weapons ? and another thing do weapons level up and get better over time or no its just the ones in the equipment and there is no upgrade to them besides the character level up
No, you can list as many as you like, it just has three spaces because that's how much space it has
Weapons do not, by default, 'level up'. You'll generally find rarer and more powerful magic weapons as you adventure
Hi, Iâm totally new.

Question so to share my books I just need to host the campaign? Or can I still share the books if I join one
Like not as a host
ah i see thanks
Youâd need a Master Tier subscription: https://www.dndbeyond.com/store/subscribe
You donât have to host the campaign to share, just be part of it.
Hello there!
Hello
Hows it goin?
Alright and you?
Decent all things considerd, played an insane amount of Baldurs Gate 3, maybe too mutch actually ^^'
That's nice
Well so so, spent around 150 hours at this point, never really got trough the whole story, im at act 3, and...there are things that frustrate me really bad.
Oh wow
Just as a heads up we have #dnd-media for chatting about other D&D content without spoilers (including BG3), and #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers if you want to chat BG3 indepth including spoilers.
149.5 to he exact but it has like couple of hours of idle doing nothing as my catto demanded loves and affections

Ahh yeah Baldurs Gate 3 where people like me got into a sort of DnD like word and now want to explore it further.
I wonder are there like seriouse DnD play troughs? All i seen so far from DnD content are the monty python revision basically
"play through" isn't really a term we use for D&D, but to answer your question, the level of seriousness or lightheartedness of any given campaign depends entirely on the group you are playing with and the experience you all want out of the game. It can be whatever you want it to be
I have a lot to learn i really only have Baldurs gate 3 as experience and bits of videos from online but what i want to do and experience i simply cant do in baldurs gate 3 in a way i outgrew it with sheer ambition i guess
Sounds like the tabletop game will be perfect for you then
Also saw a video of the German LARP convention which looked awesome, even with my horrible non existent social skills i would love to attend one of those
LARP and D&D are different games, just FYI
Ohh yeah i know that mutch but they share some simularitys.
Some, sure
Plus both look real fun i think
gotta ask is it best to pay for a game for the first time or jsut find a random group
DnD weapon idea the Legendary Kemotox Spray.
hey guys i've been learning a lot of the rules and gameplay of 5th Edition D&D, and i gotta say i really want to have a go ! Where and how do i get started in having a go (whats the best route to getting into it)

I do wonder, which version of DnD people use most often? Like Baldurs Gate 3 is like DnD 5th edition but the newer DnD edition limits magic.
5th edition is the most popular version at the moment.
There is a refresh currently in progress but it is intended to be backwards compatible
I mean Baldurs Gate 3 and a little of information gathering basically confirmed why in DnD 5th edition magic is limited unlike the older version where you could do some insane magic...i wonder if people miss it.
Now i just need friends to play DnD with...yeah...hmm...thats gonna be tricky...
I had been learning about 5th Edition for some time but I have been playing Baldur's Gate 3 which has grown my want to play actual D&D
I had been looking at and using 'Roll 20' for online character creation and know that (a ten min refresher will get me back) pretty well, but just need people to play with now
I had also watched on YT 'Swindlers Den' Lost Mine Of Phandelver playthrough and really want to get at it lol
I only see like Chuckles shorts, DnD character creations, ZacSpeaksGiant shorts
Magic has always been limited in D&D wdym? In previous editions there were certainly more powerful and numerous options, but a big criticism as a result was feature bloat & imbalance. That being said 5th edition is the most popular edition by far, though if you wanted to ask about previous editions Iâd check out #dnd-elder-editions
Well what i mean is like Pre-Netheril time Karthus used 12th level spell after the incident the maximum magic level is 9th level
Mythra limited the maximum magic level.
Yes indeed, in the Forgotten Realms setting. In general spell levels higher than 9th were not player options but instead narrative devices. 3.5e did have something called Epic Spellcasting, but that wasnât the same as being able to cast 12th-level spells.
So what your saying is that even in olders generation 12th level magic wasn't as avalible basically and more used as a narrative device rather then regular magic
Pretty much. Itâs not like 9th level spells were ever chump change anyway.
Yeah but if you want to do something like Ainz Ooal Gown character he uses super tier magic
I assumr it's above 9th level magic
That doesnât have a direct translation to D&D since the power system is different, alongside most if not all other fantasy media
If you wanted to make a character similar to Ainz, you could certainly try to find the closest analogs to his abilities via the official character options
Yeah i mean the goal is to match it as closely as possible, in Baldurs Gate 3 Escanor can be pretty fun even if not 1 to 1 but closely matched
How do you put in a profile for #looking-for-dm
hey guys. was hoping for some advice. Im hosting my first dm session tonight and my plan is putting the map on a projector. Im wanting to also control the movement of their character on here also. does anyone know a simple site to do this?
Roll20 is a free option, Foundry is paid but they're both virtual options
You can make characters, maps and run the whole game in their interface
The instructions are in #find-a-game.
Like Legands of Avariants?
Avantris?
Reminder:
Youtube content is not a reflection of dnd
If you want to find something for DnD immediately, then yeah join the #find-a-game. I joined a campaign I found through meetup.com that takes place in Discord. There's probably other places you can look too!
Yes
If you want to get a good idea of what a campaign would actually be like, then find a VOD of a first session for beginners.
Hey my glorious and shiny wonders of the world
Where can I be adopted for a nice freaky game
hello everyone! I am very new to the game of dnd, as I only have three games under my belt, but I have been craving to play some more and learn more about the game! also I really wanna give DMing a shot but I want to learn a bit more about the game first lol

@formal marsh I don't know your exposure to DnD prior to your 3 sessions, but I can tell you I'm 5 sessions in, I'm trying my best to learn about different elements of the game, and I am still learning SO MUCH MORE every time I sit down to study. I advise you to go through an entire campaign at least before trying to DM based on what I've picked up. There is just so much to learn. It's very important to be able to understand what your players are doing and be able to spot potential balancing problems with character builds etc early. Otherwise if you end up with an overpowered monster or player, you won't be able to offer fun challenges...
I think you don't need to be a complete expert, but at least experienced
oh yeah no I agree 100%! the group I played with was about 4 people big but makes it very difficult with our work schedules and I have been having a dnd itch lately lol So I figured to find a discord server and when I can maybe try to join a session and really start getting into the game lol
You looking for a once a week type thing? Or even more frequent?
I am hoping for once or twice a week honestly, specifically Tuesdays and Wednesdays since they are my days off and it would obviously be easier on those days
I'm afraid it'd be a bit late to join the campaign I'm in since it's already at lvl 3, we also have too many ppl as is but.. This server has #looking-for-players
yeah no worries, I will most likely be using that section when I can and get some campaigns going! but thank you for considering the idea of me joining yours! much appreciated thank you!
Another thing I'd recommend is watching and learning what you can from series like this:
Note, I just quickly looked it up, this one in particular may not be high quality, but it's just to kind of give you the idea to study some series, watching from the first session. First sessions are FUNDAMENTAL!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DvQqpWGsSs
oooh thank you! I will definitely check them out! thank you so much!
I should start an archive of beginner friendly DnD campaigns and sort them into playlists...
hi
oh that wouldn't be a bad idea at all! if you do, I will definitely start checking them out!
@full spoke sup!
Hello Mario! Welcome!
oh awesome! I myself, only have like 3 sessions under my belt so we are practically in the same boat lol
yea
Mario, have you ever watched a DnD session? A vod, or stream, or in person?
nopee
all i know is from a friend
and he didn't say much
Have you read any literature?
he played as a magical piece of paper đ
nope
It's not a problem if not, I'm just trying to gauge how much you know.
You've played your share of RPG video games though I assume?
that shouldn't be a problem, I mean as long as you want to learn there shouldn't be an issue. we start somewhere right?
kinda??
i played skyrim
That works perfectly
isn't that kinda a rpg
So Mario, the first thing you'll want to do before playing is to spin up a character.
yea
You don't have to do anything and you don't have to know much
There's 2 places you can do it

That's one place you can go hahaha
Hey, you got a link or something to a DnD guide for armor?
Just wanna review some stuffs.
Free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Armor mechanics? Or what? You want to reference specific types of armor?
Yeah.
I was wondering if I could use starting chainmail on a fighter or a paladin and add a helmet that wouldnât change the AC and was only there for aesthetic.
It would just be a neat thing for the design.
what does ideal mean
I mean you have a lot of freedom because DnD isn't a video game. There's no cosmetics or whatever that limit what you can do. You decide everything.
Mario, do you know what race and class you would want to play?
What about a character name?
HmmmmâŚ
I think it really depends.
Just really on the DM, and how fluid they are willing to be with characterâs visual design.
Flavor is free - you can describe your armor as whatever (with DM and table permission)
Mechanics are not.
Exactly, the only thing limiting your character is the armor type, but as for what your armor looks like, that is ENTIRELY up to you! My Artificer has medium armor, but as for what that armor looks like is ENTIRELY up to me!
its not late to try to do this
im gonna go to sleep
if am gonna make a character or something i need not to be sleep depraved
and am probably gonna need to be on a vc with someone to walk me through thisss
Goodnight guys
Gn
goodnight my dude
sleepy time

Check out the free basic rules first and if you have any questions, feel free to ask here!
So I'm blind and was wondering if anyone would be willing to teach me how to play DnD I've always wanted to play but am unsure due to not being able to see the dice etc just thought I'd reach out here
If it's physical, you can just ask someone to read out the numbers for you and hand you the correct dice! For online, there are a couple of little text to speech programs you can use for some dice rolls, or simply asking siri/alexa/google to roll for you which will read out the result, or you can allow the DM access to your screen through discord to keep track of your dice rolls accurately for you.
I'm new as well, but there is technology out there that will help with this for sure
Thank you I use a screen reader so maybe I can have it read a digital dice to me or something like that
Yeah! At the end of the day, a lot of DnD is theatre of the mind, so once you get used to the systems you need for it, you shouldn't have too much of an issue, just growing pains like doing anything new.
Depending on how bad your vision is, you can possibly get larger dice/increase the screen scale which would help too
That makes sense! I'm looking forward to trying to play I just have to find a party or something
#looking-for-players has been where I've been looking personally, checking out reddit as well might find you some, especially if you explain your situation I'm sure there's plenty of people willing to help
I wish I could, but as I said I'm brand new as well, I can't teach what I'm not comfortable with haha
Same
well ill offer to help people if they want to ask me about anything im not new to dnd but im not very well versed so ill do my best tol help with my limited knowledge
Alot of people say they use foundary vtt is it worth it?
I can't figure out how to use the demo to at least try it
unfortunately im not familiar with foundary
but i suggest asking someone who uses it
i started by using dnd beyond then got really into the baldurs gate franchise lol
Oooo
how do i create a new character
In general, go through the character creation steps in the free basic rules (or players handbook if you have it)
And ask if you run into specific questions
Ok Iâm def new to dnd
can someone tell me the basics for the game
Sure! Here come some links.

Hi I'm new to the game and would like to start playing as a game master. I have a hard time understanding things by reading books or watching videos so if someone is up to teach me the rules, how to play, etc... my direct messages are open. I sometimes make pronunciation mistakes because English is not my native language (I'm French) but I try my best.
I'm not aware of any official ones but it may be worth looking for some French dnd servers. You'll likely have an easier time understanding the rules in French considering dnd is a relatively complex game and you said your English isn't very good.
Well I looked for one but didn't find any. So here I am. And yeah what I meant by I don't have a very good English is more of a pronunciation problem, I should have been more precise.
Yeah I've done a quick search and I can't find any either. I don't feel I could do a good overarching explanation of the game but I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
I don't have questions for now since I don't understand anything
Hi everyone, i am new to DnD and have a few freinds that like to play it, I am currently trying to build a campaign and think I have a good idea but need some help creating it, please feel free to steal this for your own future games as well
message or add me so we can talk about this and maybe make a really good one shot campaign
Could be a good idea to post in #dm-world-building
if this is for me i appreciate the helkp
It is, and no worries. Just explain the ideas you have and someone will likely help
i made a new character but idk if its okay or not
im so confused idk if made the character correctly or how yo actually join a group
send the character in #character-discussion
do i have to have a character paper to play irl? or can i use my phone?
i have dnd beyond
That works great
oh ok
sorry to disturb, however i have a question, if for example i have a warlock then i dip one level in wizard, would i be able to copy spells in the tome then use the warlock spell slots to cast them?
Yes, you would
nice đŽ
if you have high stats its a fun multiclass, but a 13 in cha is a bit high
helloo
hello
because i wanted to do like an echo fighter and undead warlock pact of the blade and i remembered that wizards can copy scrolls to their tome, and i was wondering if i could implement that using the warlock spell slots
oh no youd only be able to cast spells with the warlock spell slots
You csnt put warlock spells in the tome
