Tomb of Annihilation is not a great newcomer adventure...
ohhhhh
that's a big... Yeah don't be upset that's a good book!
Like feel free to play it later after your players have gotten to grips with the game mechanics and understand how to make more optimal characters
but you will want to work up to it. Do read it and understand the campaign for when your ready though.
I wanna host it but my narrating is questionable
hey so is mine but people still pay me
Mainly because I find myself repeating words or stuttering
its about the experience not just 1 subject
Start small run some one shots until you want to move upto longer formats
sorry! i didn't know that was crossing the line bossman
People play D&D to have fun, not always to have an amazing narrator
Makes sense
Yeah, you have to find your niche.
Also for fellow dm’ers, do you guys have any ideas to stop interruptions ( rules almost) or is that too strict
Do you have a party setup already?
like friends who are waiting on you to learn the game?
okay. So step one is learning d&d and step two is getting a party. Are you playing in irl or virtual table?
That’s fine, for DMs forming a group is significantly more easy.
^yes!
I have a bunch of physical items such as condition rings minis books etc
try card shops?
I wanna start doing online tho
like seeing if there are people playing, a board to post up an add "lfg" etc?
Just because I’ve heard there’s cool online resources
oh even better. Dude there are millions online looking for free games. I know. 😂
Then you’ll have an even easier time forming a group.
As you start DM'ing, feel free to check in with other DMs in #dm-discussion.
But my general tips are:
- Focus on fun
- The game mechanics and rules help folks to have shared expectations - use or ignore the rules as needed to focus on having fun
- Set expectations and boundaries - what's allowed player behavior and whats appropriate topics and no-go zones?
- Enforce those expectations and boundaries - this is how you ensure everyone, including you, has good, safe fun.
- Take breaks to do quick look up rules if needed and snack and bio breaks
- Make rulings in the moment - try to be fair and consistent. Look up the actual rules after the game and discuss changes with the group for how you'll rule similar situations later.
- Focus on fun.
so my homework suggestions for you:
- Go check out that 19 video series i showed you (swindler's den)
- Read the SRD (can someone get my buddy a link please?)
- Create a campaign room on beyond site
- Go get a roll20 account
- Start or join a Discord Server
- Go to beyond Forums and say you need players.
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1w1r6WpHWLT57UjYXNZOYBylmZnp-QoQA?usp=drive_link and then look through this folder and read the materials. its 100% my homebrew one-shot.
Is beyond forums a site?
yes. its apart of d&d beyond.
I’m a minor, so do you think people would still join me
yes!
Basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
Cause I see most campaigns 18+
just make sure you set your standards for who joins.
So some folks will have issues with minors just because of the social/legal issues but as others noted, maturity and standards matter more than actual age
Makes sense
^that. Some people dont feel comfy with a minor in the room.
As I able to say my age in this sever ?
so you need to feel out those ones. And honestly there are a lot of minors begging for a game.
No - see our User Safety section in the server rules
Ok
You can give age range or something like "15+"
undead can i link to lfg forum?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/looking-for-players-groups <- lfg forum for D&D.
if not allowed it'll vanish. You will see all ages looking around over there.
Yes but make sure to explain what the link is (need to provide context).
That and make sure the link's content meets server rules.
i think i did it right, correct?
Nah that should be good since you provided context
there are lot of places to look for games or advertising them other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/looking-for-players-groups/201756-17-y-o-looking-for-a-group-to-play-5e-with <-- here is a young person looking for a game (this is a listing within that lfg forum i just posted)
Also if your above the age of 16 (we're strict on that rule over there because of legal of course) you could join a west march to help learn. Hang out for 3mo and we'll teach you how to DM.
i won't list which one i'm staff on cause - not promoting in wrong channels but that's also a good place to learn/find people who will try out your "table" as i call it.
hey I dont have a pc but I want to get into playing dnd online because none of my irls have the time to run games. how does someone whos a total noob even start or is it even possible without a pc setup?
do you have a tablet?
or any form of computer device?
no sadly unless console counts 😭😭
Smartphone?
yeah :Pp
You can use roll20 with a phone. Not easy but you can!
okay cool I just downloaded the app
So with a smartphone you can manage a D&D Beyond sheet. If that character is in a campaign it'll report your dice rolls. You can also use it for voice, on a group call or Discord.
You don't necessarily need a PC to play D&D Online.
While your options will be limited, the best mobile friendly options will be using the dndbeyond mobile app to build your character sheets and using Owlbear rodeo as your Virtual Tabletop of choice.
I have a laptop and a iPad
owlbear is better for mobile?
😂 future dm coming through. Dude you already got the setup for a good dming experience.
But my laptop is questionable
I’m saving up for a pc
I wanna get like a rlly good one
That will last a long ah time
It's available for mobile and tablets.
Like not a pre built one cause I don’t trust pre builts
I'm DMing on an early 2015 macbook pro.
You'll be fine.
Ok
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
Check out the instructions in #find-a-game and read them carefully
perfect davyd is here cause i was looking and forgot. Trying to be helpful but i don't use the lfg on discord.
Warhorn is a site that people use to organize gaming events. For D&D in particular, it can be used to find D&D Adventurers League events.
so im checking this one out. looks cool
For newcomers, I recommend starting in adventurers league because the it can provide resources to help get into the hobby.
Given AL keeps things rules as written, it allows people to learn how to play in a way that promotes learning and experimentation.

hi 👋 my friends and i are completely new to this kind of stuff but are wanting to learn. i was wondering if maybe anyone had any particular resources for being a DM for someone who's never played AND also doing it remotely. of course I've found so many resources just by searching, but I figured I'd ask around in case there might be good guides for our particular circumstances (remote + everyone's a newb)
?tag new online
That post above covers the basics of playing online. The Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014) are important to understand on a general level, and if reading them doesn't fly for you, you could always check out video explainers like Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School.
The best how-to-DM resources I know of for getting started are this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). You don't need to watch all of the videos; the first handful should be enough.
Some adventures are designed for new players and DMs like Dragons of Stormwreck Isle (intro here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1582-intro-to-stormwreck-isle-your-free-introduction-to), The Silvyr Tower (https://www.shacknews.com/cortex/article/437/the-silvyr-tower-a-dampd-5e-one-shot-written-specifically-for-new-dms), and DMsGuild adventures like The Last Harvest or The Entrance Exam (https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?filters=0_0_45393_0_0_0_0_0&keywords=new dm&src=fid45393).
Hopefully that helps. For more in-depth conversation and advice, you'll wanna check out #dm-discussion!

Can someone give me an example of an Investigation check, and a Perception check? I don’t know the difference
I like this breakdown from Reddit:
Perception is noticing there is a book case, investigation is looking through the books.
Perception is discovering a body in the corner, investigation is examining it.
Perception is looking for an escape route, investigation is looking for the switch that opens the passageway.
Basically, if they're looking around in a broad space it's perception & if they're carefully examining or combing through something it's investigation.
Investigate a library to find so useful information, perception - look out for danger whilst on watch guarding the camp
i know im not the one who asked, but thank you
Silly q, we started a campaign while learning to play (my partner is DMing, me/ her sister and our best friend is playing) we were trying to work out when levelling up do we do HP, stats, spells, proficiency etc
You'll get HP on level up as well as any abilities/features described on the progression chart for each individual class. Here is the fighter's, for instance: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/10-fighter#TheFighterTable
@night lily Zero's post and the one just above are good for orienting you: #dnd-newcomers message

Oop sorry for taking so long I'm just readying Abt smth and yes plz
I mean did you have specific questions? The resources above cover a lot of the fundamentals.
ohh kk srry just got nervous and confused about Abt stuff
If you have questions, you should ask them! Folks don't usually let questions go by without an answer, though it may not be immediate.
Kk ty
heyo! still a bit new to dnd only had one playthrough, im thinking about being a warlock with the undead patron? is it good? is it bad whats the playstyle like sorry i have a lot of questions
It's alr, not the best but definitely not bad. I've heard pretty good things about it. I mean, best way to learn is experience so try it out.
well i do just wanna make sure im not the guy holdin the team back haha
Do not worry about that. The game is asymetrical, everyone has their strength and weakness’. Just have fun!
Form of Dread is your survivability feature, which you can activate as a bonus action.
Get a balance in when to use it, since in early levels it is quite sparce, but eventually use it back-to-back 🙂
I doubt you'll hold your team back. Just have fun, no hastle. Either way, dnd is a luck based game. Just have fun
any other fun patrons you guys would recommend ? that you think is fun in ur opinion not what everyone thinks @oblique scarab @autumn quartz
Im not the most familiar with warlock patrons, but i think it's called hexblade?
I heard it's strong 🤷♂️
I like the genie, but more because of the insane ammount of options. Not perse recommended to new players.
may i ask what you mean by options?
The choice of the kind of Genie your patron will be, with its own expanded spell list.
Next to the Pact Boons and Eldritch Invocations of course.
ooh like the eefreeti djo and stuff?
Yes
what are you opinions on the old one?
sorry im asking so many questions

Would a dex or strength build be the way to go for a fighter / battle master dual wielding smaller weapons at first but later larger ones in each hand
What do you mean smaller then larger weapons?
Are you planning on taking the Dual Wielder feat to be able to use two non-light weapons ?
Generally, you want STR for melee weapons.
Unless you plan on using only ones with the finesse property.
What type of shenanigans can a rogue get into?
Theft
Shenanigans aren't exclusive to rogues
Just make sure your fun with these shenanigans doesn't come at the cost of the enjoyment of others at the table.
What’s good online sites for dms
Yeah, I don’t do anything that’s harmful or hurtful as shenanigans just things like before. An enemy boss is defeated. I might know do a teasing taunt at it just like a Nana boo-boo.

Hello everyone would this be the right place to ask about one shots?
Uh can I ask when before starting... Does it need the D&D stuffs? Like the dices n yeah, just aksin
D&D uses dice yes. You don’t have to buy physical ones. Virtual dice rollers are especially common for online games.
what would you do for instant kills? if for example, a regular human enemy was swung in the head full force by a great hammer while they were on their knees, would that just blow their head up? or if a stronger character could just straight up crumple a smaller person to death?
Depends on their health!
'Commoners' typically have 6 to 8 hit points..
So, if the attack does that much damage? Yes, absolutely, they're pulversized, and technically prone since they're knealing, meaning it'll hit with advantage!
4hp average for a commoner
A maul deals 2d6 bludgeoning damage, so 2-12 damage in a swing. That commoner has a 2/11 chance to survive a strike from a maul. If the wielder of that maul has Great Weapon Fighting (GWF) style tho 💀
By the way, the maul in question is your greathammer
i just had my first ever session 0 and it had me wondering about combat like that. at the very end, i clobbered someone in the head and a friend crushed someone’s spine with their hands. i have to assume this was because we were already 4 hours in and the dm just wanted to end, but if something in real life would absolutely mess somebody up would it do so in the game?
Probably? It depends on what it is!
You gotta roll for most things, 'n most things have stats associated with them..
Ohh I see thanks
But other quick question before starting a character needs to be made right?
You get to have a bit of poetic licence where dealing the final damage to an enemy, they don’t get death saves so reducing them to 0hp is death then you can get the cool “how do you want to do this” moment
Some one wanna start a campaign I’m new tho
Y'can go to #looking-for-players to find open games!
Hey I’m currently making my first ever dnd character, im planning on doing a tiefling warlock I already got the character sheet I’m gonna send it when im ready :) I’ll probably get some things wrong t-t
It’s okay to make a few practice characters - just be prepared to rework them once you have a game. That way you can ensure the character fits the game and works well with the rest of the group.
It’s not strictly necessary but it can be a great way to get familiar with the rules and gauge your interest in the various classes before joining a game!
Sometimes a DM will allow a premade character which can save you some time as well. If you do make a premade, try sticking to official content only, and keep your backstory somewhat vague. This will allow you to easily tailor your character to the DM’s world
Ohh I see ty
But well how should I find a DM? Sorry I'm like doing this for my first time ^^
depends on your needs you can see if people near you like dnd or you can look online. #looking-for-players has posts to find dms

Check out these resources - I’d recommend giving the free basic rules a skim. Focus on learning how to make a character (see first 4 chapters or so). Then learn the mechanics for making attack and damage rolls, then skill checks and saving throws. Don’t try and memorize it all but rather get a feel for it. Then try and make a character. Don’t worry about how good it is - this is just practice. Then I’d suggest looking for a group to join and start playing.
Ah, ok, I’ve done the character creation before, just as my first attempts to get into dnd, maybe I can find my character again
But definitely will be looking at the rules and stuff
Could not find the character, looks like I’m starting from scratch again
No problem. GOO is fun, especially RP wise. But also the Awakened Mind feature is very strong.
Hello, me and my friends are a group of 5, I'm going to be the Dungeon Master, I'm really down with being the dungeon master, however I am actually having trouble picking up on what I should do. Can someone please tell me, at least where we can start a campaign?, they've already made charracters on dnd beyond, however I'm having trouble starting a campaign, due to a lack of map, and an outline to follow.
Edit: if yall have any adventure books that you guys can recommend me, pls do tell me
2nd edit: for experienced dms, I would also like to receive personal tips
Alright thank u
If you want a basic adventure, try Lost Mines of Phandelver, Dragon of Icespire Peak or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. These are all starting adventures for players and DM’s. Most of the adventures are fleshed out enough to give you a fun time.
hey guys im new to DM role gonna be starting my first virtual session here soon and was wondering where you all go to get your maps?
New here to DND

What are the lvl 1 stats for warlock tieflings
You decide the stats of your character using the character creation rules
Oh okay thank u so much <3
Where do i find the paladin feat "blessed" warrior? Is it in xanathars?
And how does wild magic work ..
Blessed warrior s a fighting style you and select at lvl 2
Wild magic works as the sorcerer subclass says it does
Blessed Warrior is a fighting style, not a feat. It was introduced in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
As for Wild Magic, it’s a special system for Wild Magic Sorcerers. When they use certain features, they might have to roll for an effect on the WIld Magic Table found within the PHB
Weird i don't see it in tashas .. I have to take a look again then.. thanks.
Barbarians also have their own wild magic system with their Wild Magic subclass, though it’s much different than the Sorcerer’s
Alright thank you !!

im new to dnd can someone help with it and what to buy for beginner
whoops failed to spell
So like, I got my character and their stats made
So like, now what? Do I give them weapons or armour

I’m mostly just having a hard time over all I have my stats a skills but I need help with the rest
Also is there a website where you can play dnd for free? Or do I have to pay to play
You don’t need to buy anything right away. The basic rules are available for free in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play . In general for paid content I recommend a starter/essentials kit for beginners. You might also consider the trio of the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual.
Have you read through the basic rules yet?
Yes
Wait, could I just make my own game, story and lore and play with that?

You could host your own game, that is generally the role of the DM
If you can find a group of people to play with, you could certainly be the DM!

If it’s your own world & lore then that would be called a homebrew world
Nice
Being a DM requires a bit more prep time to understand the system and mechanics, but it's very possible for a new player who puts in the effort!
No, StarOfTheLight is correct
The term homebrew covers three things
- Custom made settings and campaigns
- Custom game options such as subclasses and monsters
- Custom game rules (aka house rules)
So, basically the game mechanics and classes are the only “official” parts of dnd, but everything else is Fanmade?
That's what D&D is. The system is D&D, the actual game of D&D depends on your DM.
Officially made settings and adventures do exist but using them is optional
Cool
That is, of course, unless you're playing modules.
No, there are official settings and campaigns and lore in addition to the rules
You don't have to use them, but many people do
So I’m guessing there is beginner level campaigns too
There are campaigns that provide more guidance to newer DMs and limit the complexity, yeah
Some suggestions would be
- Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk
- Dragons of Icespire Peak
- Dragons of Stormwreck ISle
- Wilds Beyond the Witchlight
Certain campaigns definitely work better for beginners than others. You’ll have a much better time with an adventure that starts at level 1 than one that starts at level 10
Nice
Hi, I've been looking at finding a DnD group as it's something that's really interested me but haven't managed to find any in my local area (with my limited searching) however I was suggested to find a discord where people may play online. If anyone knows of any good groups that this would apply to I would be grateful for any recommendations

ive made my first character how do i play?
Can you name some specific things are you having trouble with?
If you’re looking for a game check the dyno post above!
Find a group to play with - scroll up to see the find a game message
i dont know anything also nobodys playing right now and noone wants a newcomer
its hard to find anything there
Plenty of folks are ok with new players. You have to be patient though, as it can take days or even weeks to find a game.
thats the problem
We don’t actually play on this server so please use the LFG channels to find a game. Also check other websites and servers (see #looking-for-community
Many groups are actually beginner friendly but don’t explicitly advertise themselves as so. Have you asked a poster directly if they’re beginner friendly yet?
You might need to adjust your expectations. DnD isn't like an online multiplayer video game, it's something that takes a lot of set up and coordination. Have patience, keep reaching out to different games, and eventually you'll find the right one for you!
If you want something with a fast turn around time, then it might be worth starting out with "One Shots."
A One Shot is when you play an entire adventure in a single session, rather than over the course of a few weeks. Its much easier to schedule something that's a one time event instead of a long term commitment.
Full campaigns can be extremely tough to schedule and coordinate, because you're trying to find a group of people that all have similar playstyles and want to tell the same type of story, who all have an opening in their schedule at the same time, and can commit to that time slot consistently, for a long term period, potentially up to a year or longer. Its not the type of thing you can just click a button and automatically find a game
i know this before even about to enter in after i reading everything then knowing it's like uh ...round or called session to play group... that's the basic thing i know...a
A session is basically just any time you've gotten together to play.
But never knew about "one shot"
Whether that's two hours or all day.
A "round" is the term used to describe turn order in combat
a "session" is the term for the actual event of playing D&D
a "play group" is the group of people you play D&D with
A one shot is a game meant to be played from start to end in a single session. It doesn't continue in a later session.
I thought DnD gonna be liek boardgame liek monopoly that's why I've been avoid to get into DnD almost year 😭
counting is my weakness aaaa
But good to know there is DM exist instead of counting every soul i collect
Sorry i mean y'know monopoly boardgame where you need to pay thing, etc, etc
but i join the group where DM mention it's gonna be fast session but don't know as y'all mention it's about 2 hours or all days
It can be as short or as long as the group wants it to be.
There certainly is a little bit of math in D&D. Most game actions require you to roll a d20 (20 sided dice) then add a number to what you rolled, to figure out your total. Playing online can help with that since some websites like D&D Beyond can automate that and handle the addition for you. But to set expectations, I don't think you'll be able to avoid math entirely
Oh sheesh i forgot about the dice
as long I'm in group instead of iRL that people yelling at me that i need to pay 2k but I'm holding few 200×5 paper,I'm fine
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I never win so far in that any boardgame for my experience so playing in group that probably can help me instead of yelling "give the bank 3k!1!!11!" I'm all fine with math
D&D's math is basically adding dice and modifiers.
You don't "win" at D&D, so you don't have to worry about that
With the occational need to double something or cut it in half
Ultimately D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
Whether your characters succeed or fail, it helps shape that story.
The rules and the random roll of the dice do, too.
😞 it's too true
Silly q time when levelling up, apart from the class specific things at said level, and rolling for HP increase, do we get any extra stat pints, proficiency bonuses, or saves, armour class increases????
It's not a bad thing...
D&D isn't competative, it's cooperative
No, you only get what your class features say you get at that level
ASIs (ability score improvements) are part of that progression
Ah ok so the actual level guide when it says you get these things at these levels includes ASIs, etc too thank you
hello I just pick up the essential kit and starter kit for dnd dose anyone have any tips for starting
Get a group of players and have a lot of fun 🙂
What is initiative
Whenever a situation occurs that requires detailed breakdown of the moment to moment actions players and monsters might take, then you can use initiative to keep track of that. Combat is the most common use, but it can also be used for chases, escaping dangerous situations, or anything similar.
Initiative is an abstraction of time, and breaks the game down into rounds and turns
As soon as hostilities happen the DM can call for initiative to determine the order of combat.
Oh that makes sense but what if I am only playing with one player
Since us humans can't do millions of calculations per second like computers can D&D is a turn-based game so we can determine what happens every round (6 seconds) of combat.
You still need to keep track of the monsters turns too, so initative should still be used in combat
It doesn't matter because you still have to decide the enemies as well.
Oh well it’s just one problem left and that’s like when my player is attacking monsters and all the monsters roll higher than him won’t he just die from all the damage?
Read the order of combat rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#TheOrderofCombat
The monsters still have to roll to hit...
True
That is why it is important to have more than just 1 player, but it is the DM's job to balance combat for their party, to make sure they have a chance to win.
Ok
And this is why one PC is not advisable. D&D is typically played with 3 to 5 PCs.
Thanks bye
If you only have 1 player, don't use the same number of monsters that would be a challenge for 4 players to beat
Perhaps fill out the ranks with sidekicks.
Sidekicks are a great idea, yeah
True I do that sometimes sidekicks are great once my player was in a prison hospital wing and the healer help him escape by burning the hallway for a distraction
How should I handle combat as a dm, because I’d rather do cool things in combat instead of just cast spell or attack with sword kill them then move on to the next.
"Cool" is a function of description more than mechanics
"The bandit hits you with the sword"
"The bandit, blood sleeting across their eye, lunges at Negoshi the Wizard with his chipped and rusted shortsword"
It's all in the flavour
i just made my character what do i do

Yeah like for example the goblins get to high ground and rains arrows on you for strategy or they use dirty tactics such as throwing dirt?
If you want to start tweaking the rules, that's your prerogative as DM, but remember that unless for every tweak you let the enemies use, you also let the players do likewise, things will start to feel lopsided
And every tweak you introduce becomes another thing to track and keep in mind
Ok
Throwing dirt could just be you describing how the goblin is disengaging from melee
Where is a good place to search for campaigns? I want to try starting one for the first time
I have a pretty extensive guide for where you can search. I didn't deep dive into Discord itself, but searching for servers using keywords like LFG, D&D, and similar terms should turn up even more possibilities.
you can look in the #looking-for-players channel and look around at the listings, see if anything piques your interest!
Thank you!!
Hey
If I am making a character how can my strength thing go over 20
It can't. 20 is the cap for players before magical items.
You could be a level 20 Barbarian I suppose
How do I join as a dm on here
But my ability score to modifier says it can go up to 30
We don’t actually run games here so there’s nothing to join as a DM
Certain magic items allow you to raise your ability scores above 20, and 30 is the maximum for that
For PCs the cap is 20 without magic items or special class features.
Monsters and NPCs can reach those ability scores, but players can't without high level items and abilities.
Any time you roll for a saving throw, ability check, or attack roll, if your character has proficiency in the type of roll you are making, you add your proficiency bonus to the total
No need to ping people directly to get a response - people are offering help out of the goodness of their hearts and out of their own free time. Please be patient, someone will see your question eventually.
To give an example: imagine you have two level 1 characters with the same Dexterity score; they both have a +3. They both roll for stealth, and one character has a proficiency in that skill. The one with no proficiency would add +3 to their roll, whereas the one with proficiency would add +5 (3+2), so the one with proficiency is a little better at stealth and more likely to succeed.
Do not solicit or share personally identifying information such as exact age. See Server Rules for more info.
Wait so all skills and saving throws stay the same as the ability score/og-modifier unless it’s a proficiency?
With a few exceptions, but generally yes!
Proficiency represents your being more skilled at certain skills, saves, weapons, etc. by dint of giving you a bigger bonus to your rolls.
The general formula for all saving throws, ability checks, and attack rolls is 1d20+Ability Score+Proficiency Bonus (if applicable)
Ability Scores only go up if you get to a level where you get an ASI and put that ASI in that ability score, sor aside from that, Proficiency Bonus is the main thing that scales as you level
But what does it mean when my players say I’ll take 2 levels into barbarian and 1 into something else I can’t remember?
That's multiclassing.
Multiclassing is an optional rule which allows a player to take a level in a different class instead of their starting class when they level up
If you and they are new, you should probably steer them away from it.
so a level 1 character can only have 1 level in barbarian but a level 2 character could have 2 levels in barbarian or 1 level in barbarian and 1 level in fighter, for example.
Though I do agree with razorwing. This optional rule is not very beginner friendly and best to be avoided until you gain more expirience with the game
Thank you. You all are amazing people you have helped me so much in one day.
How many people can play at once?
Typically one DM and 3 to 5 players.
As many as you like but usually 5 is a good number
There's no limit, but the game runs the most smoothly when there is 1 dm and 4-6 players
Yeah you need to be careful how many players you have otherwise it overwhelms the DM and the table
The more players you have, the more work it is to balance the game and keep everyone engaged
Too many players would slow things down since combat is turn-based and some players may take a few (or even several) minutes on their turn. Also, it's harder for everyone to take a turn in the spotlight, particularly during roleplaying situations.
How do I know when a players turn is over?
Whereas too few means encounters become more deadly and are harder to balance, and overcoming obstacles becomes increasingly more difficult
When they're finished with all of their actions/movements.
This is usually promoted by the DM as "Is that the end of your turn?"
Typically you just ask the player if they are done
How many are they allowed to do in one turn?
Remember that every character has a limit to the number of things they can do each turn, depending on their class and abilities
1 action, 1 bonus action, and whatever their movement speed is
Read the order of combat:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat
For DnD, are text-based campaigns considered uncommon? I can’t seem to really find any-
They're not as common but people do run them, you just have to keep an eye out
Text-based campaigns are slower due to their nature of communication so they're not as popular.
They're not the default by any stretch, but they are out there. It may require more patience than usual.
Well, I guess I can wait for a few more days
Remember you can search in Discord for text in messages, and Roll20 has an option to search for voice, video or text games.
Make sure you're casting a wide net. This server isn't the only place to look
Colossus are you a moderator for this channel?
Oh well your really great
I appreciate that
You can find play-by-post (PBP) on the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search PBP or play by post using Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function.
You can also search #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community with related terms: text, PBP, (play by) post.
Huh... I consider myself lucky then cause I am in a few and DM them too. Right now we are slow - things up in the air, but Post by Post is a good kind of slow; and you can enjoy old events with them.
Hi
Would anyone like to help me with the ability scores on my moon elf sorcerer? 🙂
Are you asking about how to distribute your scores?
yes!
That'd be #character-discussion, then!
Oh! thanx 😄
hey i'm new to the dnd community is there anyone that can help me figure this out

Also probably better to post a link to your character sheet than a wall of text.
Yeah I tried to send a photo but it wouldn’t let me.
How do I create a link to my character sheet?
Did you make it on dndbeyond?
I printed the pdf out and I wrote on it. Is that bad please tell me how I must do it?
You can use whatever way you find comfortable with.
No that’s fine, so take a photo and upload to imgur and share here or #character-discussion
It looks short a skill. Are the stats rolled? they look higher than you can get with point buy
Yeah I asked an AI to look at the image and change it to text he got half of it wrong.
If you have an image of your character sheet, you can upload that to an image hosting site like Imgur then paste a link to the Imgur post here
I rolled a d20
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
the 3 methods for generating your stats are shown in the bot post above. Rolling a d20 is not one of them
And as a wizard you don't want a 4 Int while having a 20 Cha.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sheet-pdfs/Rattyschof_128699633.pdf this is a basic wizard that dndbeyond generated,
I highly recommend you re-read the free Basic Rules.
There also seems to be an issue with your AC and Initiative Bonus
Your AC should be 10+Dex Modifier
Your Initiative Bonus is just your dex modifier
Your dex modifier is +3 but your AC is 12 and your initiaitive bonus is +4
https://youtu.be/NC_u0WChyvA?si=PjpXTB_E0NRMX73D good video guide for building a wizard
You have 2 sorcery points, and you gain more as you reach higher levels, as shown in the Sorcery Points column of the Sorcerer table. You can never have more sorcery points than shown on the table for your level. You regain all spent sorcery points when you finish a long rest.
Does this mean a sorc at level 1 has 2 sorc points? Level 2 would have 4, and level 20 would have 40?
What so wait I don’t know?
That is not correct
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/6-sorcerer#TheSorcererTable
This table has a column called "Sorcery Points" and tells you how many you have at every level
Thanks! I was reading the class blurb as I was tweaking it and it was confusing this is more clear
You could always start with a premade character. This is one for wizard character specifically: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/109960413
Bro I am so lost
What steps have you taken so far?
hello! um me and my friend are pretty new to dnd and vaguely know how the game works and got some pretty basic characters made but we got on here to hopefully get some help navigating the complex world of dnd and hopefully some help on where we can find beginner friendly campaigns since this is a little confusing haha...^^;;
I made a character, i think it was okay, but i have no idea what im doing
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
pretty much same as this person

This may be a dumb question but are there any text based games via Discord?
Thanks. Just curious because that might work with my schedule.
Such text only games may be referred to as Play By Post (PBP)
Thank you. So it's still considered PBP even if it's digital?
Yeah that's just a category name. No mail required
And technically typing something in discord and hitting enter is also a 'post'. So the definition still works
how do i find games online
You can check out open games on this server under #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community. You can also make a post for yourself under #looking-for-dm. Alternatively, you can look at online platforms like Roll20, Facebook or Reddit for open games.
Keep in mind that there are a lot more players than DMs so it might take some time to find a game

Thank you. I appreciate all your help. I'm looking for a game so I'll check out the links you provided
What are the best websites to create a DnD character?
D&D Beyond has all of the official options and even some third-party stuff.
DnD Beyond seems to have a paywall for some of the options, though-
All websites will. The only material for free legally is from the Basic Rules/SRD. The rest costs money.
You can just start with the free SRD content
Ditto Zero. If you use this material (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) and decide you still wanna invest some money, go for it. But no sense making that decision if you haven't played and discerned if you like the game or not.
For context, the free SRD gives you one subclass for each.
If you play something like D&D Adventurers League, where you level up at the end of and play all the way up to level 20 in one class.
At 2-4 hours per session, you would get** 40 to 80 hours of play time** from one of twelve classes.
Does anybody have a free-online character sheet that i can use to play a one-shot with my family

oki oki!
woah that tutorial game was fun, and I've never seen it before. did help, and even though I'm not as new, it was still awesome.
n-now I'm interested in trying it .w.;
if that was some elaborate hoax to make me to the tutorial game, I think it'll work.
it wasn't a hoax I don't have any spells in my spell list for that.
It was actually decent, and I wish I knew about it when I started playing. It's a lot more limited, but it gives you that idea to grasp onto, and let's you climb up the ladder on your own (what I mean is it is a great starting point to get the idea of the game, then you'll eventually figure the rest out. It'll only take like 15 minutes at most, but it's cool :D)
i have never played but always want to play where can i start
Right now, I've just gotta find... a group, which seems like it might be a touch difficult ;w;
but I'll figure it out, dun worry :3

when will it start?
I... I don't know. I don't HAVE a group yet. I'm looking for one.
ok
Yeah please use the appropriate channels (or private direct messages) to organize any D&D games/groups - doing so outside of the LFG channels is off-topic and will be moderated.
Is there a character sheet that is empty and can be filled out without having to print it (or pay)
you can use the basic rules stuff and use a form fillable PDF :)!
You don't have to pay for the character sheets - the only thing that is paid are the additional options that books unlock and provide (additional character options and rules). You can use DnDBeyond with the free basic rules materials. If you want more character options you can either buy the book on DnDBeyond or be in a DnDBeyond campaign with content sharing enabled which allows everyone's books be shared with everyone else.
I‘ll look if i find one
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/resources/1779-d-d-character-sheets for character sheets (includes the PDF fillable ones as well)
You can also use the dnd beyond character builder and use that.
That way you can either print it or use the app to use your character sheet while you play.

hi there
Hi
If i want to create a character on dndbeyond using the giff or loxodon race since they aren’t free to use am i suppose to buy the book and that unlocks the ability to use them in character creation?
Yes, you will need access to the books they're in (the giff are in Planescape and the loxodon are in Guildmasters’ Guide to Ravnica), by either buying the digital book(s) or be in a campaign where they are shared with you.
That said, your DM has final say which playable races are in their campaign setting (I don't allow either of those in my campaign, for example).
so if I have a dex of 10+0 what would I need to stealth through something? 11? or does it need to be higher than the enemy's casual perception?
the difficulty class for stealth checks varies on what is happening. It could be a creature's passive perception (if they aren't on watch), but that number can change depending on the creature.
so the 10 points on my character just defines the potential for a +1/+2 etc to my roll
right?
Stealth is based on your Proficiency Bonus (if you're proficient in the Stealth skill) plus your Dex modifier.
the ability score affects your ability score Modifier and the modifier is the number you add to things like skill checks and attacks.. so having a 10 is a 0 modifier so you add 0 as your modifier and profiency score if you have it in stealth
aw naw I dont have ANYthing in stealth...kinda boned ya? xD
To build on Jayn's answer you can find the full table for modifiers hre: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
you can still roll a d20 and score well.
Then you roll a d20 plus your Dex mod (+0).
OH ok thanks! the modifiers are just like boosts then?
They will give you either a negative (for ability scores below 10) or positive (for ability scores above 11) bonus to your rolls.
and these levels arent set in stone? they increase as you level up occasionally yeah?
Yeah, when you're reading class features you will see levels your character will get an Ability Score Improvement, which gives you the opportunity to increase them
Hey im brand new to being a dm and i was trying to play the frozen sick campaign on dnd beyond can anyone help me set it up and make sure I have everything i need?
#ddb-support Can help you out.
Though if you're referring to using their virtual tabletop called maps, that is only avaible to those who have the master tier subscription.
I have it (the free trial)
They're ability scores, not levels. Levels imply increase in power such as class levels or spell levels.
Hello! I’m totally new to DMing and I’ll be setting up a group for my colleagues in September so I’ve joined to get some tips over the summer ☺️
Welcome! You can chat DM stuff with other DMs in #dm-discussion so I'd suggest heading there.
My number one tip is... focus on fun. We play D&D to have fun so make sure to try and keep that the base for your D&D games.
im like a very very new DM and i need tips or any unspoken rules that i need to hear (Also gonna watch some vids on it)
- Safety first, fun second, everything else third
- Session zero is your best friend (this is increasingly less unspoken)
- You will make mistakes. They will not matter as long as everyone is having fun
- Make rullings while you play. Look up rules afterwards
- The DM is a player at the table just like everyone else. This means both the DM is entitled to have fun, and the DM is not "special" or "more important"
- D&D is collaborative; and everyone contributes towards the fun of the game. It's not DM vs Players, it's DM with Players
- Communication is key; if there's a problem, discuss it
- Out of game problems CANNOT be solved through in-game actions
- There's no wrong way to play D&D as long as you're following point 1
- When discussing D&D outside of your table, remember that the only shared language we have is what WotC has published; this goes for rules and lore.

I cant find a vid on how rolling for actions work sadly, can someone link me into a vid that helped you understand it? or a book or a post
hey havent played before can someone help me kinda learn some stuff so i can know if i want to make this a hobby because it sounds fun so if someone could help me out it would be helpful
Check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel
When your DM asks for a roll, you roll a d20, add the relevant modifiers such as ability modifier or proficiency bonus and see if the roll meets or beats the target, usually a Difficulty Class (DC) for ability checks and saving throws, or an Armor Class (AC) for attack rolls
ok thanks i have always wanted to learn and some friends started so i was trying to learn but dont want to commit to buying books yet
so the thing is, im gonna be a dm, its all our first time last night. but what im picking up is, like for example, all things that take skills or any action that can be affected by stats need to be rolled?
Yeah you can start playing with just the free basic rules - then if you like it you can invest in books to add more options and rules to enhance your game
Have you read the basic rules?
Yeah some of my friends asked me to join but they are more experience and dont want to hender them in any way so am waiting to join
NOPE me and my friends just found a book and played in the dark, it was fun but it felt like we were all doing something we shouldnt have been
That would be the place to start
not yet just am farmilar with the classes, race, and how the game works to an exent not realy the mechanics
That wasn't directed at you, but the person I was replying to
thank you guys this is what i was trying to get like a general idea thx
we had hella fun last night, especially since when I added a kind of bs rule, where whenever they would get loot from a chest, id ask them to roll a d20 for determining how good items are gonna be. They were hella into it someone rolled a nat 20 from the start, the next roll was a 1 so it was HELLA ironic
Any idea till what time the dndbeyond website will be down
hmmm
The announcements did say 1 hour, but it's over now so you're good
As mentioned, we have #ddb-support for D&D Beyond questions

I have my own set of tips here: #dnd-newcomers message
Why is a death called a tpk
Total Party Kill. It's when all of the player characters die.
Oh, thx
Hello 👋
Welcome!
Hello!!!! Im like super new to dnd and I jsut wanted to ask if the character sheets are done before or during the sessions?
Since I did some research and saw that there were the stats and stuff....
I'm pretty sure it's done before. I am also new to the game but I like to watch campaigns
Thank you! ^_^
Np
Typically before, but there's something called a Session Zero where everyone gets together, asks questions about the campaign, the DM discusses boundaries, rules, and safety tools, and sometimes there's character creation
Ohh !! I see I see
Sorry for the additional question, do all Dnd sessions begin with all characters at the lowest level? Or does it also depend on the DM?
depends, many campaigns (including official adventures) start above level 1
hi i made a character on dnd beyond but have no idea what to od now
can somebody give me tips
i reallyy need help

is the character modifier map in the 2014 handbook found on DND beyond?
or is it in a paid rule book I probably dont have ;p
I don't think I've ever heard of a character modifier map before.
bad description on my end. its the chart that shows the threshold of points to get you from a +1 to a +2 in your ability load outs
i forget if I googled it or if its on a page somewhere in the rules
Thankfully it's quite easy. A 10 in your ability score is a +0, and every 2 points change the modifier by 1.
So:
- Ability Score 8 is -1
- Ability Score 10 is +0
- Ability Score 12 is +1
- Ability Score 14 is +2
Etc
thanks fellas 🙂

What do you mean by "board"? Do you mean maps?
Helloo
Yh preferably call of cathulu
So, you might be confused about something. This is the discord server for D&D. D&D is the name for one specific type of tabletop role playing game. Call of Cathulu is a different game entirely
In video game terms, its like the difference between Call of Duty and Halo. They are the same style of game, but very different genres and rules
Welcome!

As subclass i took the life domain class. As a race im going to play a goblin, my freind advised me to be a goblin (i orginally wanted to play a deva but my friend is also new and he said thats too complicated). We now got to the point where im on my charackter sheet and i dont really now what points i should invest etc, the only thing i know is that i take a high amor class because i should stay alive. Now i dont really know the abilitys or how it works, can i decide what i take? Can i decide to heal teamates twice in a fight if i use my bonus action the normal action ( i dont really think thats possible😅 ) etc. I would appreciate some help

That is a different ttrpg altogether.
In other words, the only channel to discuss Call of Cthulhu is #non-dnd-topics. You'd probably get more traction in the unofficial Roll20 Discord server or any dedicated to CoC specifically.
Ty for the help guys
hi
Welcome to the server! Are you new to D&D?
How do I figure out my AC
can us end a link?
This chart has the main info. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#ArmorandShields
Your race and class might affect AC as well, though.
Unfortunately no. But Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function should be all you need.
alr ty
does anyone have any tips to flesh out a backstory and make it not seem as boring? or more interesting?
Answer these 3 questions with a short sentence or paragraph
1- where did you come from
2- how did you get your skills/powers
3- why are you out in the world
Simple backstory done
The best story is the one you play at the table
Even great hero’s can come from humble beginnings
alr, ty 🙏
https://youtu.be/p3N3gv1dTr8?si=-Q7j0ilxaoWHptoR video from the dungeon dudes on creating a more indepth backstory
There are a lot of ways. For in-depth discussion, head to #character-discussion.
My tips:
- Keep it short but substantial. The three prompts Enoki mentions are good because they get at motivation and some relevant history.
- Secrets can be fun, so see if you can make one or two secrets that can emerge in play. Do check with the table first about the general nature of those secrets if you think they'll introduce friction or discomfort for the table.
- Include connections, whether that's to specific NPCs, an organization, a town, or other players. That not only gives the DM stuff to work with, but it makes you feel part of the world.
- A general improv exercise: whatever your first idea is, push past that to your second, and then your third. So if you have a personality for, say, a goblin that's just a little ball of chaos, how can you make that less predictable? This is easier said than done, but stealing bits from characters you like is a good starting point. The final mish-mash should be, if not unique, then hopefully more complex than the first thought.
alright, thank you both for the help, ill be sure to implement and use them
Yeah the NPC thing is good to work one into your backstory. Work with your DM on possible locations so you could during the campaign have the “hey I know a guy” moment

I would recommend DMing in D&D's Community Campaign Adventurers League.
You can pick a AL adventure module that you like and run it multiple times for different play groups.
Doing so can help you build a lot of experience in a short amount of time.
Plus some Adventurers League Discord provide resources and assitance for new DMs like provide Co-DMs upon request.

My first ever character that I’m creating and I’m so excited if I ever find a group my character is a aarakocra Hyacinth macaw
Yep
I’m using D&D Beyond
I’m trying to think what class I should put them as
Take your time learning about each class and go from there.
True
What kind of cool moments do you want your character to have?
When danger appears, what’s their first instinct?
I’m not sure
Well, the sub classes I have that would be that would be great, but they’re not the fanciest they’re pretty vanilla are Circle of the Land
Basic Rules (2014)
Champion
Basic Rules (2014)
Way of the Open Hand
Basic Rules (2014)
Hunter
Basic Rules (2014)
Thief
Basic Rules (2014)
Yeah
Any ideas
Or any suggestions?
Understand that subclasses become available at level 3 and that at certain levels a character gains subclass abilities.
Focus on the core classes and see which appeals to you.
Either in aesthetics, play style, etc.
Play a monk.
They're straightforward, their versatiliy can allow them to be good with melee and ranged weapon attacks, don't require a need to keep track of weapons and armor, and with the updates to the class come september they'll be able to do a bit more in and out of combat.
can some one explain to how the looking for players bot works? trying to send a invite but i think im doin the command wrong
In any channel where you are able to type, type /looking. You should see a list of options pop up; select the appropriate channel for where you want your ad to appear, then hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post in the channel you selected.
Where do I find people to join my campaign

Hey, I'm pretty new to Dnd. I was introduced through BG3 but that felt very barebones. I'm looking to learn this game, if there's any group that needs another il join. il be back in about 30-45 mins from posting, feel free to dm me
You can make have the bots make a post for you in #looking-for-players .
Read the instructions in #find-a-game to set it up. Since you’re a DM trying to setup a group you will likely get responses fairly quickly.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries

- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.

Hey guys, trying to get into dnd, any super chill games going so I can kinda start getting used to it? Or any advice anyone has?

Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
should i be in 2 campaign at the same time? i had my first-ever session last week and i kinda want to gain more experience, should i do that?
Yes - but whether you can play the same character in both campaigns would be something you'd need to discuss with your DMs and groups.
thank you
As long as the games don't interfere with each other or your other obligations, go for it! I've been in three or four campaigns at a time when I had time and energy.
Didn't know that was an actual issue for tables.
Hey, im not too sure how to get started I installed dnd beyond and made a homebrew character but how do I play is it possible online...

^ Check out #find-a-game (read it carefully)
Its more of "hey how did your character get this magical sword?" in campaign 1 when you got that item in campaign 2 and issues like that.
In those instances I keep two separate notebooks and character sheets to avoid confusion.
Oh, I see. Well, I feel like a reasonable player wouldn't give all those goodies and abilities to a character who just joined an adventure.
If you're new to D&D I recommend holding off on hombrew until you have a very good understand of the game's rules and mechanics as you may not know how it can impact other parts of the system. Plus the use of anything homebrew will heavily depend on DM approval.
where do you guys suggest i make a character sheet?
D&D beyond or in the character builder of your virtual tabletop of choice.
You also have the option of using an editable pdf of a D&D character sheet.
For new players I recommend dnd beyond because it is automated and goes over the character creation process as you build the character.
alright, do you suggest a virtual tabletop?
While you don't need a virtual tabletop to play online, quite a few people prefer it when playing online because it gives you something to interact with.
is there a program you suggest? im not inclined to use Dnd beyond because its paid
The character creator is free on dnd beyond.
If you're referring to MAPS, their virtual tabletop that is currently in alpha, that will require someone in the campaign group to have a Master Tier subscription.
well, its free until you want to make anything past the base subclasses. I tried making an undead warlock and that wasnt an option. is there a work around?
In regards to virtual tabletops there are quite a few out there:
- Roll20
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Foundry
- Alchemy RPG
- Fantasy Grounds
- Maps by Dndbeyond
These are some VTTs that are getting the most attention currently.
Each one caters to different aspects of play, so feel free to check out all of them.
alright. thank you
To quote the dyno bot.
Accessing Content on D&D Beyond
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
Yeah I figured that, I made a homebrew race because I wasn't happy with any of the races that are default, but thanks for your help, I'm currently trying to find a dm
At the end of the day D&D is a product.
And like any product , the people who made should be compensated for it.
i am in three and just became an addict recently lol I have three different characters so it is easier not to confuse them but sometimes the game play itself get mixed up lol
For people one a budget, I recommend visiting your local library to get access to D&D books and use that.
fun and confusing lol
It is important to pace yourself.
One of my players is in roughly 7 total campaigns.
wow that is crazy lol

whats the easiest site to make a dnd?
how do i use the bot in #looking-for-dm ?
"Make a D&D" doesn't make sense. Do you mean a character? A map? A campaign?
Follow the instructions (carefully) in #find-a-game
Yes I meant Campaign
You don't need a site to make a campaign
You just write down your notes
You can use anything; loose paper, a notebook, word, google docs
Or go all the way to a compendium tool like World Anvil or Obsidian
How about maps? I've been struggling making my own.
Check out the pinned messages in #dnd-maps , lots of map making tools are listed there
But again, you don't need anything fancy; some paper and markers and you're good to go

when a creature has a stat like . Mele weapon attack +4 to hit reach ft, one target hit:9 (2d6 +2) can someone explain this to me
the way i read it is thta you do 2d6 + 2 then take the roll and ad +4 to x
yoo
Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post to look for players. (Guess he deleted the post?)
Melee weapon attack
This is telling you information about the action. It's an attack (rather than a saving throw) so the rules for attacks apply. It's a melee attack meaning it's made against a creature within 5ft (or longer if the weapon or creature has reach) and uses Strength as the ability modifier by default (some things change this) and it's weapon attack, meaning it's not a spell attack (this matters for certain other rules)
+4 to hit
This is telling you what you add to the d20 roll
reach ft.
You seem to have missed some info here, but this is telling you how far the monster can reach when hitting
one target
This is telling you how many 'things' (creatures, objects etc) the attack can target (aka effect)
Hit: 9 (2d6+2)
If your attack roll hits (the d20+4 meets or beats the targets AC or Armor Class) you do damage equal to rolling 2 d6s, adding them together, and adding 2. The bit outside the bracket is telling you what the average of that is in case you decide you want to save time by not rolling
ohhh ok thhhx
than what’s the point of like the strength stat for example
You're replying to a literal example of "the point" of it; it's used for attacks made with melee weapons (as the default)
Maybe you need to rephrase your question?
for damage you roll a dice and then add your attack modifier to it and weapon modifier to it, but what does the base strength stat do
It doesn't do anything, other things in the game reference it
?tag new skills
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
Such as in my example above, it's added (along with other bonuses) to default melee attack rolls
hey where do i go to look for players?
Read #find-a-game very carefully but also you can look through #looking-for-dm and see if any of the folks there want to join your D&D group/game.
hello where do i go to ask about adding a homebrew class to dnd beyond?
I just answered you in the other channel you posted.
thanks my internet is slow so this just posted
Any recs on how to join a new campaign as a newbie
Are you talking about finding a game, or actually joining one that's already accepted you as a player?
I was just about to ask how to join a new game, like finding a game
go to the channel #looking-for-players and read some of the descriptions, the most important part is that the campaign premise interests you
if it does, you’re way more likely to jive with the party and get some experience
also make sure to state that you’re a new player, if you do anything “wrong” people will be way less harsh
Thank you for the advice dreamy ^~^
no worries my friend
iamrazorwing has this helpful guide: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view?pli=1
I might be a bit out of luck because I have only specific times I can play, and I only have my phone due to no home Internet
But basically, look around, have patience, be prepared to be flexible. DMs also like it when you carefully read the information they put out about their game.
Of course, if you're wanting to play a game, it makes sense to pay close attention. A lot goes into being a dm, so it's only polite to do such.
Nonetheless, thank you for the helpful advice!
Is my dexterity modifier my initiative modifier?
Yes.
So if my dexterity modifier is +2 my initiative modifier will also be +2 correct?
Yes.
I just tried to dm last night and it went terribly
But then why is there different places to write them why not
Only because it was impossible to narrat without getting interrupted
that happens
Was it online or irl?
(I was doing online toa)
Pause and tell your players to stop interrupting you (and other players).
I tried that
And?
when they dont listen, i just deafen on discord for about 10 seconds
They just keep making jokes and side convos
if that doesnt work, might be time to have a talk with the players or reevaluate who you’re playing with
If they continue given them one warning. If they continue after that, kick them.
They are putting their fun over yours. The DM has the right to fun as well.
Yeah most def
Why only 30 minutes?
Anyway this is more #dm-discussion territory.
Kk
Some things change your initiative bonus without changing your dexterity modifier
Like what?
Jack of All Trades and the harengon trait are two examples
I'm a new player

I'm new to the whole d&d watched some YouTube videos and I'm interested in the game so I'm wondering is there any pdf rule books for d&d or smth
There are no PDFs of the commercial rulebooks. There is a PDF of the free Basic Rules, however: https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
I want a complete rulebook
It is a complete rulebook
Oh alr
Yep, the Basic Rules just don't have all of the character-creation options.
And another question am I supposed to change my character every time I'm playing or no?
It's free and it has everything you need to get started. Think of it like a video game demo and if you like the game you can buy the full version (aka the Player's Handbook) later.
You'll change your character for every adventure in all likelihood, but not for every individual session.
You typically have one character for each campaign.
but I can't pay so yeah imma stick to the basics rules
Oh alr
It all depends on the Dungeon Master (aka DM).
You may play a character once for an one-shot (a very short adventure that lasts one session) or keep playing the same character for years in a long running campaign.
If you join a table, the DM will probably share their books with you to use.
Oh then that's great because I'm not very creative with characters and others so one character and only is the best for me
Oh alr I didn't know that
Thanks you so much guys
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Basic rules still has some great character options.
Ummm another thing
I know how to speak English and understand it but because of some accents and slangs I might not understand it
You can just ask your question, that’s what these channels are for.
Will this be a problem for me in the course of the session?!
That's on the individual table.
Oh yee I see
In those situations it’s best to let your group know beforehand. Doing so can avoid confusion and allow a group to think of a solution if one is necessary.
The key to any successful game group is to communicate.
Thats Nice because sometimes when someone have a very strong accent or talking very fast I can't understand a thing
That’s fine.
I’m deaf, and even though I wear hearing aids, I can still miss what people say.
That’s why I tell the groups I play with beforehand and ask people to rephrase what they say when I don’t understand what was said. I also do what I can to help and make sure I am in a noise free environment when I play online.
Im new to dnd, ive always wanted to start playing and ive only really just figured out i can do it for free and online, ive read the learn to play and ive read the basic rules, im just about to make my character using the character sheet on dnd beyond, can anyone help me with making my character?

Oh I'm sorry to hear that and also thx for your advise
I’m fine being deaf 🙂 it’s not an issue for me.
Idk if I used a good word or no
Wait bruuuuh
How am I suppose to describe what I want to do in the game 💀
You describe what you want your character to do.
Wait i never thought about choosing a name
I get that I mean like how like I just say go and open that door?
Yes.
how do i choose a good name for my character?
How about atlas
Oh so it's easy then
yeah but i want a full name or something
The welcome message has a podcast of people playing dnd that you can listen to that teaches some the basics.
D&D isn't a video game where you click on the door. You have to tell the DM that your character is going to open the door. The DM will then respond by saying the door is 1) unlocked, 2) locked, or 3) trapped.
Ohhhhhhhh
You can just say "I'd like to open the door"
Or if you want to do it in a specifc way, you can explain how!
"I wanna carefully open the door, to peek inside witrhout alerting any potential enemies inside"
or
"I open the door by kicking it in, hopign to catch any enemies by surprise!"
Oh so that's how it actually works I thought it's like you just say you open the door and it's done
Also how do different types of dices work in the game???
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
I mean you can also just say you open the door! Those were just examples for if you have some additional goal by doing so 😛
The d20 is used for attack rolls, saving throws, death saves, and ability skill checks.
Uh OK
You dont need to ping me each time
What are death saves and saving throws
Read the free Basic Rules.

Does anyone know what kind of race would be good for someone who wants to use offensive type spells? (i dont know if this is a thing or not but im just gonnago for it)
Your class will be most important for determining what spells are available to you. Some of the elf sub races have a few magical spells, but nothing too impactful.
Warlock, sorcerer, and wizard will probably have the widest assortment of damage related spells.
im struggling with choosing my race though, honestly im really confused
It's a negative/positive bonus you add to your rolls.
How does that exactly work?
It's negative for any ability score below 10 and a positive bonus for any ability score above 11.
Ohhhh
Have a read: https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/races#ChoosingaRace
If you really can't pick one, pick a few and roll a die.
Or make the same character in several races, see which vibes with you most.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
what language is most useful to learn in D&D
OK
Another question What are the special traits of humans
anyone know?
Everything is in the Basic Rules.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/races#HumanTraits
it doesent exactly say common in the character builder..
does anyone have tips for finding a game as someone new to dnd?
I believe all races learn Common by default which is why (Tasha's optional rules not withstanding)
The best languages to know as OldMan said is based on the setting & campaign your DM is running
alright i got another question though, what does it mean faith in the character builder.
For example, you'd find better use out of knowing Giant if you were going to play the Storm King's Thunder adventure, but Infernal would be more useful to know if you were playing Descent Into Avernus
Faith is optional, but it refers to if your character worships or believes in anything in particular, such as a specific diety or set of dieties, pantheon, or philosophy
alrighty thank you
For example, a Life Cleric of Lathander would probably put Lathander in the faith section
Guys can somebody help me with making a character...
Is there anything specific you need help with?
- Search far and wide; there are tons of places to find other players and GMs.
- Have some idea of what you like/don't like (and/or want/don't want) out of the game and communicate that to the table you're applying to. It should be a good fit, not just an available one.
- Don't limit yourself to your time zone. Instead just focus on shared availability. If someone wants to play in the wee hours for them but it's your evening, go for it!
Ive created my character, ive hopefully sorted out everything i need to know, what do i do next. Find a team?
You've grasped the basics of the rules?
i believe so
Then yeah, go find a group!
