Are you referring to the equipment lists?
Yes
It's listed right there at the beginning of the background information, before the tables. See here.
Can someone help me in the creation of my first character sheet?
We can help out here! Where are you getting stuck?
How does one calculate saving throws
Ability mod for most of them and the 2 you are proficient in is ability mod + prof bonus
what do you mean by proficiency
So if you were prof in str save and had a str of 16 (+3) at lvl 1 you have a prof of +2 that would be a total of +5
Every class is proficient in 2 saving throws
Proficiency is determined by your character lvl you should be able to see what it is on the class table in the class description
Hi! I've only played DND once but I can't find anyone to play with, does anyone know how to play online?
Hey I’m new and I dunno how to find a DM here I have a player but idk if it’s okay (I used a dnd beyond thingy to help make him)

Hello I am new and I would like to create a character, is there anyone available to help me?
Sure, but I normally make stupid characters so it might not be for you
That's fine with me, it's just to get started I would also be fine with creating a sentient potato
👽
How about a piece of bread that never goes bad and floats using magic hand which it uses indefinitely
Btw that is one of my favourites to play with
It would be beautiful
Loll
So how do we start?

Yes but I would need help creating the character first no? or do I look for the game first?
the dm would be able to help create the character, and finding a game first will mean the character will fit in better
You can certainly create a character now if you'd like! But think of any character you create now as a "practice character". There's no guarantee the DM will allow it when you finally find the game, after all.
Okay, thank you very much to both i will looking for the match
You can practice he’s a playlist of how to make 4 of the classes https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPjdPog_vKX1vnjf68Sx2jcq1OtVUSA2i&si=lGLVy_pVa47cf-8a

I have a question, I have been thinking (since I don’t have a good memory) to have a notebook to write my actions down or plan ahead. Would that be great?
Sure sounds like a plan
Sure, if it helps you out while you play!
I once had a friend who wrote out all his actions in combat on flash cards
i talk here right?
I have been thinking about since it will help me concentrate (I can get distracted easily) and maybe a fidget
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there are some cheat sheets here too
Im trying to find ways to make my experience more comfortable without bothering
That’s actually amazing, might note it down
Turn reference sheets are great I still use one

i do have one question that ill probably ask once i finish reading it all
That's what we're here for!
Yes, I have been thinking about it since I want to keep track of things probably also to help any future dm I play with because tracking actions and stuff is not easy
Plus for the good memories too, like silly jokes I could write down
Yup,especially for new players
Had a player in my group who noted every dad joke he made
Worth it
hm alright so a while ago i was tryna get into dnd, and on the website i downloaded some game for the computer for dnd, is that used at all? im not entirely sure
I can't be sure without a name, but I'm fairly certain it's probably not DnD. DnD is a game played in the imagination, and isn't a video game.
"I got a restraining order against the entire celestial plane and I will not elaborate on why."
There are a few programs online which can help visualize and track the things you're doing in DnD, but it's just for reference.
i dont think it was entirely a video game, i think it was like a "hub" of some sort (video game was the best way i could describe the kind of software)
Perhaps Tabletop Simulator? That's one of those programs to help visualize and track the game.
when you downloaded it the titlescreen was like super crazy looking, very nice artwork
Golden, now I know my idea of the notebook would be awesome
im assuming i should probably create a character right? before i attempt trying to find a game?
is it possible (and if so how) can my character stay like hidden as much as possible during the campaign, like even from other party members when not in combat, not like invis just like hiding in the shadows or behind objects or something so that others dont know where they are?
I dont think thats a good idea
look with your dm,but having a character in a coop game...Not doing coop stuff can be annoying
But I guess rogue would be the most fitting class for that
You cannot conceal your location from other people at the table. You can make it so their characters don’t know where you are, but not the actual people playing with you.
i dont mean they wouldnt coop, theyre backstory is that their like deeply mistrusting so theyd just stay hidden from everyone unless needed due to safety concerns
yeah thats what i mean
Then change their backstory
D&D is a team game. If you made a character that doesn’t play well with others, than it doesn’t fit the game
wonder if i can make a character that uses like short ranged portals for combat or something
im not saying they wont help or coop with others, just that i want them to try and stay hidden as much as possible
thatd be cool ngl...
There are lots of abilities that can let you teleport as a bonus action. Classes, races, spells, etc
i dont mean stay hidden and let everyone else die or something, just stay hidden unless needed
i think it would be crazy good for support in a fight, like i could help my team mates move around in a fight or redirect projectiles
Usually what I'd say is: any character you create before you find a group is a "practice" character. There's no guarantee your DM will accept it in their game, so be prepared to make a new one, but it doesn't hurt to try putting one together for some practice!
I understand what you mean. But that would still be a huge hinderance on the game experience
how?
Unfortunately abilities that move allies or redirect attacks are pretty limited, and often only available to high level characters.
aw rip
do i use emcumbrance?... thats the weight stuff for holding items right?
You can certainly work your way to them in the future though!
Because it would constantly involve doing your own rolls, not taking part in role play, forcing the other players to deal with the fact that your character is being a loner or distrusting them, and just generally putting a large amount of extra work on the party and DM
It's a cool idea for a movie or book, but probably not for a tabletop role-playing game.
i didnt say they be like completely seperate from the party, theyd be as close as possible to the party just unnoticed by them, if the party needs something from them they need only say and my character can reveal themself or something? my character would still do anythign they needed to without even being asked too
lol is the primordial language option like letting you talk to ancient powerful creatures lmao
It's the language used by elemental creatures
ohhh that makes sense
whats abyssal?
like sea creatures?
they would still take part in the rp if needed, even possibly being able to like listen to what npcs say behind the parties back or something, and if i think of something like puzzle wise or whatever that the rest of the party hasnt considered id still say it?
Abyssal is the language of demons.
Slightly different from Infernal, which is the language of devils. DnD makes a distinction between the two, which are different kinds of fiends.
the other party members wouldnt be hindered at all by it, save perhaps momentarily if they have to go wait where is ___? but in like combat or whatever theyd need only tell my character what to do and theyd do it?
Think of it like this: if this is what your character is doing for the majority of the game, the DM has to prepare and act out every single encounter twice - once for the party and once for you. Not to mention, you wouldn't always learn something new, so all the rest of the players would be sitting around waiting while you attempt to gain new information that might not even be there.
It's interesting, don't get me wrong, but it's logistically challenging to the point of being a detriment to the table
i just said i would be there, id be like the charcter in the back of the room still listening to the encounter just unnoticed?
isee i see
Apart from seeming cool and looming in the background, this only just adds more complication to every encounter.
if an encounter happens where the npc or whatever it is actually definitely needs to know im there then sure theyd show themselves, but in most cases if the npc is just like telling the party info my character would still be there to hear it same as the rest of the party?
Not to mention you'd never get to directly interact with any of the conversations your party was having.
i would if i wanted to? im confused if the charcter is in stealth are they just seperated from reality or somethgin cause thats what its sounding like, why cant they just be in stealth when they wanted to and come out when they needed to? aside from die rolling to go back into stealth that shoudlnt be a problem?
youre making it sound like my character being hidden means they would be completely seperated or even in a completely different location to the rest of the party?
in actual combat i wouldnt be hidden from my party if thats what ur worried about?
"I step out of the shadows and join the conversation that I've been eavesdropping on..." Is only cool once or twice. After that, it starts to get a bit annoying.
do i pick standard array, manual/rolled, or point buy for my ability score generation method?
I would recommend Standard Array for your practice character
You have to remember that “stealth” is not magical. You’d need to be behind something or far enough away to actually hide. If your party is in a building, you’d have to wait outside. If your party is in a dungeon, you’d have to be around a corner or in a different room. If your party is in a forest, you’d have to be several feet back or far above them.
Your DM will decide what they're using for the actual game.
It’s not like Skyrim where you can just crouch and suddenly people can’t see you
i should just ignore the "other modifier"/"override score" boxes right?
I'm not very familiar with DnD Beyond myself, but that sounds right.
and sorry for asking so many questions its just kinda confusing
Not at all, that's what we're here for!
i dont want my character to be in stealth literally all of the time, only when possible ofc, i still wanted to be as close to my party as i need to be, my current character has +8 on stealth so i thought theyd be able to be hidden pretty well in most environments while staying close to the party?
and its unlikely id need to do that too many times, id onyl really need to if i needed to like ask a question or something no one else has thoguht of?
im presuming a dungeon would be dark and like my charcter wears dark clothes which is why i was asking if stealth would be possible, and surely in a forest i can just hide behind a tree very close by?
and a building must have plenty of hiding spaces, whether its a simple as hidding behind like a door or something surely?
is it necessary to be so far away to remain hidden or something?
okay thinking about this now i think a sorcerer may be a bit complicated, whats a fun support class that is easy to build?
also what do bards actually do, like do they attack or do stuff with music?
you say bard and i think musical person
Your DM will determine what situation are or are not appropriate for your character to hide, but in general you either need to be behind full cover or heavily obscured.
surely its still possible to do that in most situations whilst remaining close enough by to be able to at least hear any encounter? i mean, obviously being like alone in an empty room with my party or somethign would be impossible to be hidden, but most other situations it shoudl be possible to be behind full cover, if full cover means not within eyesight of any other characters?
does a thick tree not count as behind full cover if my character is at such an angle as to not be visible to other characters?
i get it will all be at the DM's discretion, but surely it shoudl be possible (especially with a high stealth modifer) to be hidden during a lot of situations?
Your stealth modifier does not affect when you can hide. Whether or not you can hide is determined first, then you roll to see if you are successful at doing so or not.
"Full Cover" means that your body is fully covered from any onlookers. Typically this means you'd be behind a wall, or around a corner. What type of cover a tree can provide is entirely based on its size and shape, but most typically it would only be 3/4th cover.
Idk,as a dm,hiding isnt verry available, like, you're in the middle of a grassy plain at noon, theirs no way you hide in there
yeah i do get there are some situations where it is basically impossilbe, but for the forest what about if i liked climbed a tree and looked down upon the setting? i would probably be visible if anyone looked up, but if i am not noticed climbing up the tree then would that count as being hidden to anyone who doesnt look up?
They could hear or smell you
unless theyre race is some kind of animal with a good nose, how often is it characters are able to smell other characters?
NPC or monster you mean
Just to be clear, it certainly is possible to play a stealthy character. Stealth can be a very useful skill for certain situations, and it does make for a good playstyle. The important point we are trying to make clear is that its not something you can do in everyday situations, or just passively. It should be something you do when the situation calls for it.
thats the part i dont understand, there are a lot of everyday situations that logically would make sense for it to be possible to be in stealth, passively may be a stretch but is it like literally in the rules or something that it is very hard to be hidden often?
im basically just like imagining most scenarios in my head and can think of many hidding places where i should be completely hidden from veiw?
"passively" is a thing you can maintain stealth by moving at half speed
so it is possible?
Yes but is it playing as part of a group
to an extent. Being blatantly visible by the opposition breaks it as always
yeah obviously
im just imagining my character taking advantage of any corner or object which they can hide behind, cause there are so many situations where there has to be somewhere they can hide behind whilst staying close enough to the party to be almost a part of interactions?
rogues generally dont have to stay close. (split the party) they are the only ones triple moving to get back to their party
Honestly, if you're in situations where the mechanics don't matter, you could just describe yourself as talking from behind the bush/up the tree wherever
that is what i was imagining happening a lot?
“Ok team we’ve just go to pop in this shop and find the magic item”
“Where’s Dave”
“Oh he’s behind the bins again”
sort of, except hoping the party would more just assume that my character is nearby than constantly be looking for them
what do u mean tho the mechanics dont matter?
I can see it getting old and annoying for the party
what do i put for a faith?
speak with your gm
Any gods you have faith in
If you're just hiding from your own party, then it's more flavor than anything else
oh i dont have one of those yet im just making a character cause someone told me i should before trying to find a game
It only matters if you're actually trying to hide from an enemy/sneak in somewhere etc
basically yeah, but also like in case some npc/monster attacks the party my character wouldnt be noticed as the rest of the party might be (tho ik that would rarely happen)
#moderator-support but it was prob the pdfs cause they don’t exist
as long as they quickly realize/ are told my character is likely always nearby and to not keep trying to look for them, it would only be annoying if they actually need my character for something, and most situations where that might happen my character could reveal themselves before they need to ask for them e.g. coming up to a locked door and need my character to pick it
Oh thanks. Also i was asking if i need dnd beyond?
i just really want to know how it might be possible, like would i basically just need in every new situation to say the character is gonna hide ___ and roll for stealth?
also wanted to know how much that does carry over for combat, like if im in stealth already and combat starts would i still be in stealth and able to sneak attack enemies unless they have like come from a direction where theyd be able to see my character?
yes it is the only way to be hidden before combat
Are you a rogue ?
yeah
Then yes that’s one way to get sneak attack
no you can get sneak attack multiple ways
basically i just want to know, if the situation gives an oppertunity can i basically constantly be in stealth and hidden from my party and everyone else (npcs, etc,) and then be able to sneak attack enemies from that stealth?
also when the party is like moving between locations how possible is it to remain in stealth?
do i share the link to my character in character discussion?
i want people to like tell me if i should fix anything or somerthing
If you move at normal speed you make stealth rolls at disadvantage
Attacks cause your stealth to break, so you can't be sneak attacking and constantly be hidden. Some racial and class features expand the options available to you for hiding (like a gloomstalker ranger or halflings hiding behind other people), but it will be an easier time for you to recognize that sometimes it won't be an option and/or the DM will have features on their side of the table that will make it more difficult for your character to hide.
You also want to consider your concept in relation to the rest of the party - you want to make a concept that works with the party rather than being solely focused on one concept.
If you’re referring to travel pace, I don’t think that’s correct. You travel at half speed when using stealth. It is straight up not possible to move at normal pace stealthfully.
For anyone not aware, this rule does NOT apply during combat. It refers to overland travel
is there a place used to review characters? or do i just send the link to my character sheet in the character discussion channel? idrk what im doing so i would like someone to like.. tell me what i should change on my character and stuff
Yep! Head on over to #character-discussion.
Yeah prob misremembering the rule
maan too bad i cant make a character thats an elemental, thatd be so cool
It depends on what you’re talking about. If it’s small scale movement like the party is going from one room to another, or one building to another, then it would probably just be another stealth check, depending on how the DM wants to handle if. If it’s large scale movement and the party is going from one town to another, then you would be traveling stealthfully, which means you move at half your normal travel pace, while the party travels at their normal pace. So, you would obviously get left behind, unless your entire party agreed to move at half pace with you.
Ok
are you saying you cant move while stealthed?
never mind you are talking about travel pace
In combat or social situations, hiding does not affect your movement speed. During overland travel, it cuts your travel pace in half
No, that’s not what supreme sneak does at all

Okey thank you
Is there online versions of this that we can do like turns via texting or something? Or is that dumb
That's called play by post, and is a style of campaign
Interesting! I don't think I'd have hours in a row for a session so maybe that could be a good way for someone new like me to learn and be able to quickly google things. But I can also see how it would be detrimental due to people not setting aside time. Are these play by post games usually pretty good?
That entirely depends on the group.
What’s the best class for a yielding
Define "yielding"
Any class can work well with any race
Tiefling are often (stereotypically) associated with rogues or warlocks
I agree that any class can work. But, I have a favorite Tiefling Neutral Cleric character concept, who wears super colorful clothing and believes that true neutrality is achieved via a balancing of extremes, with prayers offered to various deities of all different alignments within any particular pantheon that holds sway in a region.
I'm pretty sure my only tieflings are a barbarian and a paladin currently
Bad boy/girl tiefling rogue or warlock
👋
Hi
The big dnd stereotype is the "tiefling bard"
Hello! I'm new to D&D and want to ask, if here is a person who can speak german to play the game? English is also okay. I'm just not fluent in it and because of the issue with the time shift.. :>
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Enschuldigung! Hier, es Englisch nur.
Sorry! Here it’s only English.
I don’t think data sheet is the right word.
For the game, “character sheet” is the word. “Character” means the person you play.
dndbeyond.com is where most of us make our characters and you can usually find games in the #find-a-game channel.
Hello everyone
I know most campaigns are like year+ are there any like 1 month campaigns like a little slight play thru to get a feel for the game before getting into an intense year+ campaign? Just trying / looking to learn the game better
I think I remember seeing a name for what you mean
I’ll try and find it
tysm
I think what you are looking for is a one shot?
Is like short adventures
I plan on also maybe trying that first
Since it’s probably more simple and gives you a insight
That’s it thanks!
hi all!! just recently got interested in dnd and hoping to learn how to play some day :D
new to DND, like never done it but I have a group of friends including me who have gotten very interested in it and I have NO IDEA how to set it up 😭
Cant find any good videos tbh.
Anyone able to help me out with that lol

nah i joined like 10 mins ago :p
So when people join a campaign, is it done over texts or vc?
why does this game have to be so hard to get into...
Because there are way more players than there are DMs.
No i mean understand it...

ok thank you

My basic question is, what advice would you give to your past newcomer self? (This just for advice stuff lol, generally question so everyone can answer.)
I don't remember being a newcomer because it was 40+ years ago
Watch/listen to other ppl DMing
Almost all of my knowledge comes from making characters I never play when I'm bored in class
My knowledge is not delegated to the right things now, especially since I like DMing so much
Don’t start with a spellcaster. If you do, ask someone for help picking spells and learn the rules for preparing spells. Make sure that you know what your spells do before you try to use them.
For players: Take things easy, you don't need to memorize everything in the handbook to play, and having the handbook with rules with you is not uncommon if you need to look something up.
As DM: You don't have to prepare everything. if you've got a few encounters, NPCs, a map and a general plotline lined up, then you get far enough with just that and a bit of improvisation. Players fill up the majority of the time of a session with roleplay and decisionmaking.
Hiii I’m really new to all this and know literally nothing about dnd. I’ve been getting into rp recently and dnd seems similar but a little more fun so I’d love to learn more about it somehow 👍🙏

Omg yes 😭
Yeah I thought about it and I'm not really good with memories so it's really nice to be able to you know read some of the rules time to tike while in session or anything really
not completely sure how to add up the hit points when multiclassing, ive read the rules but all i can guess at is that i have 2d8 from have a level in rogue and artificer, but idk whether my total hit points should be 14, 15 or something else with a constitution modifer of -1 from what the class says about hit points at higher levels?
You just gain the hit points for the new class states in hit points at higher levels
So a character that started rogue then took 1 level in artificer would have 8+con mod hit points at first level, then 1d8 (or 5) + con mod more at second level
yeah i dont understand that it says 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per Artificer level after 1st, but since i think i have 2d8 does that mean i have a total hit points 14, 15 or somethign else?
I think you’re confusing hit dice and hit points
maybe?
You have 2d8 hit dice
yeah
You have, with a -1 con mod, 11 hit points if you take the average for the second level
how?
In your case it’s identical to single-classing either of those classes, bc they both have the same hit points per level
ok....
7 (8-1) for level 1,and an additional 4(5-1) for level 2
wait why 5?
Because that’s the number of additional hit points you gain for each artificer level after 1st…
I will say, multiclassing is not recommended for new players for multiple reasons
Also having a -1 con mod is not a good idea at all
yeah ik, but im playing as an assassin who tries to remain hidden as much as possible
im thinking starting in like second level of rogue to get the bonus action to hide or dash after attacks
another possibly silly question, is it posible to multiclass in the same class, to like gain different subclasses in the same class? the rules for multiclassing say u can gain a level in a new class, but woudl like the same class again count as a new class? 😅
What part of that needs artificer?
No, you can’t
ok figured
Taking another level in the same class is just… not multiclassing
magic + i like the sort of tech aspect
You can get magic with the arcane trickster rogue subclass
Again, really don’t recommend multiclassing for a new player
yeah but then i cant take the assassin bonus damage stuff
It’s very easy to neuter your character via it
The bonus damage from the assassin subclass does not come up much
You can be an assassin (career) without being an assassin mechanically
yeah ig
is there like a practice/demo dnd game i can join, one that like wont actually affect my character for future campaigns and is just to get a feel for the game/practice at how best to play?
Your character doesn’t carry across campaigns
You make a new character for every campaign anyway
you do?
Yep
It's not like your permanent record from school that follows you into later life.
(He joked)
yeah ik i thought tho that like the death saves and/or damage taken as well as like experience might follow into different campagins?
surely a single campagin wont bring a character up from 1 to 20?
But yeah, make characters to practice, to experiment, to get feedback, but unless you're playing more than one campaign with the same folk each experience tends to be individual.
It may carry over between sessions within a campaign
Most campaigns don’t, but most characters therefore don’t reach level 20
It’s very rare to carry a character over between campaigns
how much/often do characters even level up during campaigns?
Damage taken and death saves are far smaller scale things, they generally reset every couple sessions at most (when you long rest)
You may want to look into the gloomstalker ranger if you wanted a magical assassin type
Varies a lot
And slows as you get to higher level
Around level 1-3 levelling up every couple sessions is pretty common
Most campaigns end before level 11 or so
ok
Yo im new to dnd and i dont know where to start. I get some of it but i have no clue on how the dice work
Ok thxs
as a rogue how much might i need strength? like should i give it a high roll?
ohhh ok
I would make it one of your lowest stats
I just looked at the basic rools and it didnt help
so every attack a rogue might do uses dexterity then?
I really doubt you fully read through them in that time
Yeah
I couldnt find anyrhing about dice
what about acrobatics tho, that uses strength so how often might it be likely id need the extra acrobatics modifer?
That information is distributed through the entire thing
Oh alr
You mean athletics?
Acrobatics is dexterity
hey
yeah thats what i meant 😅
im really new to dnd
It’s not uncommon to use it, but proficiency or expertise in it is more than enough
ok thanks
It’s not worth raising strength much just for a single skill you can supplement in other ways
And you can often use acrobatics for the same things as athletics
They have a lot of overlap
Take it bit by bit
yeah im reading through the server guide
All you really really need to get started is to look at ability scores, then check out races and classes. Basic Rules are free and have what you need.
so whatever i get from rolling the dice, added with the ability score i rolled on, is the final score i need?
Depends what you are doing
do i get to pick which dice i need?
so lets say i use my sword to attack one of the monsters, that needs strength?
No, the rules will say. Ability score checks, attacks, saving throws all use a d20.
Have you seen the Handbooker Helper videos yet?
ive been watching some youtube guides

but what about a ranged weapon that doesnt use finesse? can rogues still use dexterity rather than strength for every weapon despite it normally needing finesse to make the choice?
(not just ranged weapon but any weapon that doesnt have finesse)
all ranged weapons use dexterity
and not using a finesse weapon entirely negates the rogue class
oh.. 😅
the main feature needs a finess or ranged weapon
ok thanks 😅
hello
new to dnd, watched some dnd sessions and recently got a lot of reels about dnd and my curiosity got the best of me
can someone explain what druid circles are? like a club? do druids have to be in some kind of clubs with other druids
It's just a loose shared set of philosophical princples
Two Circle of Wildfire druids may have absolutely no connection to each other, but they share the same ideals and principles
Oh okay are these principles something druids find and choose to follow or is it more like something their raised into or chosen into?
They don't even necessarily exist in-world
Oh okay cool
Both? Neither? Some combination thereof?
wonderful
i feel like online dnd games is a thing but just wanted to check if thats right?
?tag new online
ok thanks
where would i ask to join a like online dnd game for new people? (like with patient DM who would likely have to answer many questions on what im allowed to do?)
In this server there’s #find-a-game , but the more ways you search (i.e. Reddit’s r/lfg, Facebook groups, LGS, etc) the greater chance you have of finding a game. Most groups in my experience are beginner friendly even if they don’t advertise as such, so it’s always good to ask when looking to join a group
If you have questions related to the mechanics of the game, most DMs I feel should be happy to answer. If you’re asking right out the gate for homebrew stuff (especially a lot of it) or to play a character that doesn’t mesh with the DM’s world, I would expect that would limit your options.
ok
I know for a fact there's at least one in #looking-for-players that should suit, though I can't speak for availability.
Hello
is there any way to like filter it/ask more specifically for campagigns for new players?
Under their post you can ask, not sure if there’s specific filters for it however
And hello Turbo!
Wisdom, it will tell you the relevant ability for spell casting in the class description
Like is it the entire score or just the bonus
Like say i got a wisdom of 14 that is +2
So is my spell casting ability 14 or +2
the allies and organizations part of the character sheet, do i have to choose from like recognized organizations or can i just completely create a new one?
That's something best talked about with your DM
i was hoping to make like all of the characters i create assassins and be like part of the same assassin organization
Certainly something to hash out with your DM!
ok
i know nothing about the game but really want to learn so i can play

Welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the basic rules linked above. We also have a set of videos if you're more of a visual learner, and we have the #learn-to-play channel for more resources. If you're looking for a game after having read through the rules, you can begin your search on this server in #find-a-game . Finally, if you've got any specific questions, we'll be happy to help you here!
thank you! you’re the best!
Would this be the right channel to ask questions about being a new DM?
here or #dm-discussion
I'm still fairly new to D&D but the idea of DM'ing is interesting to me. I'm curious if there are recommended beginning adventures for a new DM or if I should just pick one that sounds cool?
Any of the starter sets, Wilds Beyond the Witchlight, or Phandelver and Below are good fully adventures
One-shot anthologies such as Keys from the Golden Vault and Candlekeep Mysteries are good in terms of low prep/investment
DM's Guild have lots of one shots as well, and they currently have a sale on
There's also some free adventures on D&D Beyond
Thank you!
The druid class table will tell you where you get your spellcasting ability from, which is Wisdom as Enoki said. That isn’t necessarily numerical, it’s just telling you which ability to derive your Save DC & Spell Attack Modifier from.
You may be confusing it with calculating your Save DC & Spell Attack Modifier, which use:
- 8 + Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Ability Modifier (Save DC)
- Proficiency Bonus + Spellcasting Ability Modifier (Spell Attack Modifier)
As you correctly guessed, that spellcasting ability modifier is +2 since it derives from your spellcasting ability’s score (14 WIS)
For some specific single-session beginner-friendly adventures to check out: The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's pay-what-you-want stuff. The Green Blight is connected to a very handy how-to-DM guide (https://howtogm.guide/), and The Silvyr Tower is meant to walk the new DM through the process of running the adventure. Peril in Pinebrook simplifies the D&D ruleset, which may make it easier to jump into.
Adding on to this, I really recommend Candlekeep mysteries it’s one of my favorite campaigns I’ve played in
If you're going to add to someone elses message via reply, please turn off the ping
Oh sorry
Didn’t know I could do that, that’s fun
But for a beginner campaign that’s tied in together closer than something like Candlekeep, I would say dragon of Icespire peak. I’ve both played it and run it and it’s pretty easy for both parties
Thanks!
I think my favorite short anthology book is actually Journeys from the Radiant Citadel. But those are all good suggestions :)
Hi I'm new and I'm going to be asking dumb questions buuuuut.... Would it be possible to have my character built around using mimics as tools - trying to tame them etc
It would be very difficult to do that mechanically
Mimics are monsters, and there are no written rules for how to tame a monster
D&D doesn't really have a monster tamer class. The closest are probably things like beastmaster (which gets a beast you could flavor as a mimic) or drakewarden (which gets a drake you could also flavor as a mimic)
Darn. Im too new to know any of what that means... But I just have a hilarious imagery in my head of like a guy using a shield to block a blow from an enemy and it bites down on the sword
So you can't "build" your character around that, but when actually playing a game of D&D you could talk to your DM about potentially allowing it via a skill check or something like that. But it would be fully up to your Dm to allow it or not allow it in the first place, and determine how difficult it is if they do allow it. Its not something you should try to plan a character around
Flavor means describing it that way even if it's not how it's working mechanically
So you could say your shield did that, but it wouldn't actually do anything different than a normal shield
Any actual differences you'd have to talk to the DM about and get approved/worked out with them
I guess rather than mimics it would have to be illusion/magical items that just do a similar visual effect then? More of a realistic approach?
As those items also don't currently exist in the base rules, you'd still be left with the options of describing it that way/getting the DM to make special items for you. But that's more likely to be successful than taming mimics imo
Generally speaking, you have a lot of freedom in describing your character. But anything related to actual mechanics (new items, abilities, rules changes) has to run through the DM
Ah ok thanks! I had a whole character arc (assuming it lives to a higher level) based around that premise
Like a few sentences worth not a Ted talk haha!
I'll just go back to reading the rule book now :p
Thanks!!
I know it might be dumb for me to ask, but idk is there like a option to just do some sessions to just learn dnd with other people? Like have some people done it and stuff? I’m actually finding it really hard to grasp the rules and all the stuff on my own and I think it would be more comfortable doing it with other people while having fun
I’m not entirely sure what you’re asking. How is that different from just playing D&D?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Learn-to-play sessions are occasionally offered through the virtual weekends (see the Events channel on the server). Sometimes game stores, libraries, and community centers offer tabletop programming catering to newbies. And some websites like StartPlaying offer tutorial sessions for a price.
Me and my friend are looking for new people to play dnd with we are learning to dm ourselves and we could probably help you grasp the rules more
It is playing, but in tutorial mode if that helps you understand
Heavy on tutorial mode
Thanks!
I recommend getting started with adventurers league as it played rules as written and it’s adventure modules for levels 1 characters are designed to teach players the basics.
In the meantime you can listen to the Join the Party Podcast. It is an edited recording designed to teach newcomers the basics of dnd :https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
Ohhhh
:0 epic, I'm still grasping basically everything... Let's say I get lost really really easily
Thanks!!!
That is an official race, but it's up to the DM whether they allow it.
Ah okay
It has rules governing its ability to change shape, and anything beyond that is the DM's call.
As razorwing mention changeling can change their appearance. Can’t go into much detail beyond that as it goes against server rules about paid content.
Hey, I’m new to dungeons and dragons. I already have a character set up, but I don’t know how to join a campaign
Have you read through the instructions in #find-a-game?
Nope
That'd be where to start.
I didn’t even know that was a thing
Hahah no worries at all it’s a lot to look at when you first start

I'm new to dnd what are the easiest ways to learn the game?
My post above can help you get started.
Thank you
If I want to have an inconsistent race backstory that fuels my characters motivation is that allowed? Like human touches cursed relic and transformed to being an orc and the objective is to return to normal or accept new life for example? I'd start at lvl1 as the "new" race for clarity it's just a fluff piece but might make for an interesting backstory and or set up for future macguffins
This is something you want to talk to your DM about.
As old man said talk with your DM about it
In practice your best approach is to use a changeling race to reduce the extra workload that would add to you and the DM.
Generally it’s best to use a campaigns setting, tone, and adventure hook as the basis for creating a character.
Again, talk to your DM. They may not allow changelings, orcs, or whatever in their campaign setting.
Oh interesting! So is it more of a chicken and egg situation or do you usually get a brief description of the campaign and then build a character?
Probably changes from person to person but I tried joining a group last night but they wanted full characters prior to joining 🤔
It's best to have concepts of different characters without getting into the specifics like the playable race and their backstory. You can tweak it once you find a DM and know more about their campaign setting.
Oh so like an example of that would just be like "class, alignment, and points distribution"?
Every group will have their own rules and culture. Whether they want you to make a character before or after is up to who you are playing with.
Generally speaking, its better to make a character after joining, because then you can be assured that the mechanics and backstory fit into the world you'll be playing in. However, making characters is fun, and it can be a good way to learn the rules and introduce yourself to some of the mechanics. So, its alright to make a character first if you want to. Just keep in mind that changes will most likely need to be made after you join a game
Point Buy / Standard Array are the safest way to generate ability scores. Most DMs want to witness rolling (assuming they allow rolling).
I've been using standard array and rolling makes sense. What is point buy? Just like picking exactly what you want for each section?
Thanks! I have been using DnD beyond to make some basic classes for wiz sorc and maybe a third just to get a better understanding of what goes into a character
I've skipped things like equipment and hyper specific things. Found a few broken ideas or silly stuff but it's been mostly rule-of-cool stuff
It will vary from group as there are different ways groups approach starting a campaign.
Some start with the players creating their characters together first so the DM can use that exchange of ideas as the basis for building a campaign.
While others will start with a campaign premise first and build characters to fit naturally into that campaign.
I’m sure there are other ways but these are just two to give you an idea.
Ok thanks! Maybe my next step is to find a group with a dm and just trial by fire it as I go :p
Thanks!
You could also start with D&D’s community campaign called Adventures League.

Well, for one, you don't need to learn everything all at once. That's like jumping into the deep end of a pool before learning to swim.
You have a few options: you could watch some games played on YouTube or Twitch just to see what it's like in action. (Podcasts also work for this.) You could read through the Basic Rules. You could watch the Handbooker Helper videos (or WASD20's Rules School). You could sign up for a learn-to-play session through the virtual weekends linked in the server's Events channel. Or you can do all of these in increments. Read one chapter. Watch one video.
And of course, you can ask questions here on the server!
The way I learned was through JoCats crap guide to dnd series! Informative and silly!
That's really fair, one step at a time
Also taking notes of the recommendations cheers man
Question, I saw that the new Handbook made changes to all the classes did Spore druid get any changes?
Cause I didnt see anything
I'm not sure what subclasses are/aren't in the 2024 PHB, but I expect the folks in #1026901431132885064 do!
Pretty sure Spores wasn't one of the subclasses included in the 2024 PHB
Correct spore druid is still thesame
Hi
I'm super new but I've been less interested in the level progressive system and more into fun, story-driven progress. Is there is a specific category for that?
Are you asking about searching for a game or navigating the server channels?
Gotcha. I know that if I'm going to be matching out notes I'm guaranteed to miss something and get lost.
DnD is pretty reliant on its class system in general. You can certainly have games with fewer mechanical interactions, but it's still a core of the game system.
If you're looking for a pure roleplay experience, I'd recommend searching for role-playing forums or other game systems.
Was just looking for a proper term for the type of progression I'm more comfortable with
It’s important to keep in mind that D&D is one specific mechanical system, made for a specific style of play. If it doesn’t quite match up with the game experience you are looking for, there are other role playing games out there
Oof "forums". Haven't heard that word in a long time
You still progress through levels in D&D. As mentioned, there's the experience system, which is more math-based, and milestone, relying on story checkpoints.
I was there, Gandalf. 3000 years ago.
If you're after something more free-form, then another game may be better suited for your needs/preferences!
I'm sure there's plenty of discord servers dedicated to long form RP
Fair. I'll check that out
What other RP games are there?
There's a whole tabletop RPG industry! Going into more detail would be for #non-dnd-topics.
I thought the DM’s hands are pretty open in dnd when in it comes to these stuff
Noted
Kids on bikes is a more free form story based progression system
Hi I was wondering if I could join a game I am very new and just wanna try it out
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
hello !! ^^ i’m very new to this and to this discord. where should I start?
You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to look for games on this server, actually!
Hi how can i make a thread on looking for dm
Hey, I never played the game before I just know the basics, can anybody help me?
I want to learn about abilities.
I found a site that is for beginners
I want to set my ability scores but I don't know how many scores I have
I just want to know how many points can I put into them
You can do whatever you want. The DM sets the scene and you do whatever.
Different abilities (like how good you are) depends on your class and feats
Roll four d6s ( a d6s is a 6 sided die) and add the three highest numbers to put into a slot.
Okay
If your DM allows, reroll ones
What you put on each depends on what you want, but it's most helpful if you put the highest that will help for the class
Thank you very much! I think it's a bit OP but DM will fix it I suppose.
That's just what our DM allows. It's called hero rolls or something
Hello i am a new player in dnd and i was wondering if there was any groups i could play with
Same wanna look together?
Can I join
Oh you're a DM?
Yeah that be cool
No i just started and dont know the first thing about dming

Thanks
Cool
Let's post there then
Bet
Ya that sounds smart

You will need to use one of the commands

Hello, I’ve never played before, but my friends and I want to get into DnD and I have a question.
I have this idea in my head about a character who is similar to hulk, in the sense that the angrier he gets the stronger he gets. Was thinking maybe the anger level changes what my attack modifier is, or maybe what die I roll for damage. Is this a thing that can be done? Is there a way to implement something like this?

for thief tools, whenever i get proficiency for them, is it just a specific tool from the list or all of them
Proficiency in Thieves' Tools gives you proficiency in all the components of the tools. Thieves' Tools "includes a small file, a set of lock picks, a small mirror mounted on a metal handle, a set of narrow-bladed scissors, and a pair of pliers" (PHB p154).
Call me stupid, and, yes i am, but i have difficulty wrapping my head around the concept of proficiency.
For example, the rogue of the party might have proficiency in Stealth while the fighter might not. That basically means that the rogue will have a bonus on any Stealth checks and the fighter doesn't gain any bonuses when sneaking around. However a fighter will be able to use greataxes more easily due to having proficiency with them, something rogues aren't proficient with.
At level 1 your proficiency bonus is +2. Your proficiency bonus gets higher as you level up.
Proficiency bonus is how the game shows that someone knows how to do something while still having rolls.
What are the goblins bonuses?
I recommend watching the Handbooker Helper video on paladins.
Where can I find it
That's the monster, not the race?
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
They didn't specify.
The playable goblin race isn't free so we can't post its details here.
Thank you
i totally know how to play d&d (i dont)
Honestly me too
Here.
bet
thx for that
The player race gets Darkvision and Nimble Escape like the monster does.
Plus a couple times a day they can deal extra damage to a creature larger than them.
And if you’re using the most recent version, they’re also harder to charm.
My dm is letting my teamate grung use his skin to make vials of poison and then sell it for 100 gp each
Is this allowed
Its allowed by usually looked down on
Yeah, most DMs wouldn't allow something like that. But if your DM allows it there's nothing you can do.
hi im new i wanna get into dnd how should i make a character? are there any websites to help me make one?

Dndbeyond has a character builder that simplifies the process.
yall, should i add my "atk bonus" onto my "to hit" rolls or not?
Yes.
thank you
what about my damage
The damage depends on the source: weapon, spell, or magic item.
See the weapons table for the base damage for each weapon
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#Weapons
currently using avrae google docs as character sheet, should i put my atk bonus onto my damage rolls too?
No, you don't add your attack bonus to damage.
Have you read the Basic Rules yet?
How can I be a healer whilst being a wizard/mage
uhm..
If you're still learning the basics, I recommend using dnd beyond for your character sheets.
I would highly recommend you read the free Basic Rules. Making a character without knowing what you're doing is going to make yourself more confused.
You're going to need to read the rules eventually.
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here
Take the healer feat when you are able to.
Specifically a character levels that where you can take a Feat or an Ability Score Increase.
Could I summon things (like monsters but it would take a toll depending on how strong/big they are(
From what Nuhuh has told me I think he wants to be a wizard that casts healing spells.
Lol
There are ways, but those methods go beyond the scope of #dnd-newcomers
But could I summon monsters? (It can take a toll on me depending on the monster)
The game does have summoning spells.
Each are specific on what you can summon.
As for it taking a toll on the spellcaster, that is represented by all leveled spells through your available spell slots.
They're a limited resources so you have use them wisely.
I don't think any conjuring spells affect you physically in a negative way.
Ok
There are specific spells that can conjure or summon monsters.
Alr
Yeah there are several summon spells.
I believe some are exclusive to certain classes.
There are certain spells that if things go wrong might cause your summons to turn against you.
So, I can be a wizard, I cannot do healing magic if that correct, but I can summon things and I don't have to have my magic focused on it, so I can also do spells that's can back fire against me depending on the roll, and I'm able to use pretty much any magic?
No.
No to which part?
Healing magic tend to be domain of divine casters like clerics, druids, and paladins. Artificers have access to Cure Wounds too.
Okay
Did you like reply to the wrong message?
The summoned creatures won't turn on you (unless the specific spell says otherwise). I recommend you read the spells.
Okay
Remember this channel is to help you learn the game. It would help if you actually read the free Basic Rules instead of asking vague and generic questions. We're more than happy to help you learn the game but you need to put in effort.
So, what I'm thinking is that I could be a cleric, I can use healing and divine magic correct?
I did say "if things go wrong". I didn't go into specifics for a reason.
Again, read the spell descriptions.
I do that.
I think I've got a hand of it
Check out #learn-to-play and read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here
Okay, I'ma save that for a bit later

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

Hey is there a way to replace spell slots me and my dm are trying to simplify the game (dont say spell components)
Wait do i say this in dnd newcomers or dnd rules?
Replacing spell slots would actually fall more under #homebrew (unless you're using the official variant rule of spell points in which case #dnd-discussion would be okay)
#dnd-rules is more for "how does this official rule work in this given context"
Feel free to check #channel-guide to find the most appropriate channel for a topic
hi i wanted to ask about a campaign that i stole (im a new dm i have never played dnd ever before so thats why i stole it) but i used chatgpt to help me with a lot of it but i read the rules and it said ai content is not allowed so can i ask here or do i need to delete all the ai generated stuff and then come back and ask?
I think you just can't post it here.
Do not post any AI generated content on this server - it's in the server rules.
I highly recommend running a module instead. I bet you it's way better written than whatever a machine can spew.
ok thanks any modules you recommend?
I highly recommend Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus. Currently playing it and I am extremely invested in the story.
i just watched some people play that actually, is it possible to play that campaign in maybe 1 or 2 days?
If you manage to find a DM that is willing to run that module then sure? Finding a good group takes a bit of time and patience though.
ok thanks for the help im gonna start to prepare this now i have 1 day left, i think i know the general story and im gonna make something similar to it (or just find one on the internet)
so how would my character get/have a bag of holding?
Your DM would likely provide it as a reward/treasure.
is there any way to like start my character with one or would that just also be up to the DM?
That would be up to the DM
ok thx
Generally starting level 1 characters do not have magical items
k

i dont think it says anywhere, but if your multiclassing can u get 20 levels in each class? or does ur overall level cap at 20 so the levels in each have to add to 20?
The total levels from your classes add up to your Character Level, your character level cannot be higher than 20
aww ok
Could someone suggest me a race and class / subclass to play?
I was thinking about some "draconic" race like Dragonborn or Kobold.
Dragonborn vengeance paladin
Or you could put a list of race/species in a table and class/subclasses and roll some dice and see what random numbers suggest as a character (or use DnDBeyond's random character generator functionality).
For the Dragonborn I would go with a Fighter or Paladin and a Kobold a Rogue or Monk
Hey Guys I'm searching for someone to play some D&D games
Gotta' check through the #find-a-game page to find a group 🙂 It may take a bit of time unless you want to DM your own game.
Which dragonborn scales (breath weapon and resistance) are the best in most situations?
Probably better in #optimization.
I'd say either Red/God (fire) or Black/Green (poison/acid). Fire is just something that you'll always come across and if your exploring a dungeon there'll be a lot of traps that could be poisonous. But that's my opinion.
so normally to stealth attack enemies ur whole party would need to suceed with stealth right? but if my character was already in stealth from even my party, then would that mean even if my party fails to hide from the enemies my character could still be hidden and able to like surpise attack the enemies?
As long as you yourself are hidden from the enemies view you can preform a sneak attack.
ok
Rogues have special sneak attacks too if they're near an ally
k thanks
But as soon as you attack you are no longer hidden

Hii im so new to this like, lost

Morning! How common are tutorial-esk campaigns? Is there a lack of DM's or it shouldn't be too hard to get started? After enjoying BG3 wondering if I should try DnD
Am i obligated to have some mystical name for my character granted they're human?
They're not plentiful by any means, but they are out there. Learn-to-play sessions are offered through the virtual weekends (see the server's Events channel), StartPlaying has tutorial games at a price, and you can occasionally find tabletop programming for newbies at game stores, libraries, and the like.
Lots of friends said i gotta try this out and idk how to make characters and stuff
That's probably a question for the DM you play with. There's no specific rules for naming.
Read through the links in the bot post above!
Very fair.
personaly myself i like the dragon born race
berserker barbarian and acid breath is very nice
You seem to be confusing the rules for hiding with the rules for surprise.
If your party attempts to hide from a creature, the creature will see anyone who’s stealth check is equal to or below their passive perception, and will not see anyone who’s stealth check is above their passive perception.
A creature can only be surprised if it is not alerted to any sign of danger, so you can only surprise them if your entire party successfully hides from this creature. If the creature sees one or more members of your party, but not you, then they will not be surprised, but you will still be hidden
ok
Your best bet is to check out the find-a-game channel out. People post games they're running there all the time (it's a bit of a rush to get to them before they fill up at times)
Is it often that a new player friendly game comes along, or it a rare site to see?
I think most games are generally welcoming of newcomers.
Everyone who plays D&D was once a newcomer themself.
I do think it's less common to see games explicitly advertised toward newcomers, though.
So if you see one you're interested in, it never hurts to ask.
Thank you
hello am new to dnd like really new and i wanted to start a dnd with one of my friend and i will be the dm what do i do?
Welcome! I think the easiest way to start as a DM would be to run a short, prewritten adventure.
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is a good one specifically designed for beginners.
thank you soo much

Hello, I am new to Dungeons and Dragons, and was wondering what I need to get started. I saw there's a 2024 version of the Players handbook, is that what I need to get, rather than the 2014 version?
im new too
but someone recommended to just look online for a pdf
instead of buyin
Hello!
- It's against server rules to share personal information (such as your age and location).
- This channel is for people new to 5e, and who would thus need help with learning how to play. You might be better off interacting with a conversation in #dnd-discussion!
Sorry about that. Mistook the Newcomers section for being proper for introductions. Errors corrected.
Uhhh what’s 5e again
The 5th and current edition of Dungeons and Dragons
Yes
Hmmm alright thanks!
The only Events channel I see is the al events. Is there a different channel you are referring to for more information on the virtual weekends?
hey guys! im in a campaign with a point buy system. i have a lv 3 phantom rogue. what kinda numbers are we looking at for that?
Hello I am looking for a group and a DM. I am a new player trying to learn the game
human so +1 to all.
strength 11
dex 17
con 13
int 9
wis 10
cha 15
Is this good? or should it be more even for dnd?
Same
That was really weird. It copied the ad and not the actual video. I fixed it. He goes over spells and spell slots in this video.
oh! lol

What does a 60/40 game style mean?
It's likely talking about combat to roleplay balance. But I couldn't say which way round that would be without context.
Ideally you’ll want to aim for even-numbered scores as much as you can, since your ability score modifiers increase on evens (and stay the same on odds).
If the numbers you shared here are before the human’s +1 to all, that’s great.
they are
If it’s after, then human really isn’t doing you any favore.
yeah i know hahaha

D&D Beyond has the basic rules in an easy to read format. My suggestion is to take things a step at a time and not look too far beyond the basics, and maybe have a go at making a practice character on dndbeyond to help things click as you read them. You don't need to worry too much about getting it 'perfect' (there is no perfect- just what is fun) and more getting a feel for it.
When you play the rules will click into place more.
initiative is basically just a dexterity check, as in it's a d20 + Dexterity Bonus. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/combat#Initiative
Hit points are based on your class and your consitution modifer. On your class table it will tell you what your 'Hit Die' (HD) is. For example, for fighters it is a d10 https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/10-fighter#ClassFeatures
At first level this would be maximised (highest possible). So for a lvl 1 fighter with 18 Constitution (+4) her HP would be 14 (10 +4)
Oh okay thank you
What’s my dexterity modifier when my dex is 8?
Basically to calculate modifiers you can think of 10 as the base line. Every two points above 10 is another +1 (So 12-13 is +1, 14-15 +2 so on). 9 is -1 and every two points below 9 is another -1.
So 9-8 is -1. 7-6 would be -2
Another method if easier is (Score - 10)/2 (round towards 0)
18 Dex = (18-10=8) /2 = 4
8 Dex = (8-10= -2)/ 2 = -1

Hello I'm new and was wondering if there is eneyone that culd help get me started?
On my char sheet, in the equipment section there are little nodes with letters (CP, SP, EP, GP, and PP) what do they mean?
You can always ask specific questions in here and we can try and help!

Those are currency. P = piece, and the first letter is what metal. CP= copper piece, GP = gold piece.
EP is Electrum, which is a rare coin worth half a Gold Piece, and PP is platinum which is worth 10 gold pieces.
Thanks! How do I determine my skill numbers btw?
Skills are the relevant ability modifier (For example, Acrobatics uses Dexterity, Athletics uses Strength, Medicine uses Wisdom) and your Proficiency bonus if you're proficient in that skill.
So say I have 17 Wisdom (+3) and am Level 1 (so my prof bonus is +2). I'm proficient in Wisdom (medicine) so it's +5, but not proficient in Wisdom (survival) is it's +3.
So my charisma is 16 so +3, and I’ve got a proficiency in charisma and persuasion so would my persuasion number be a 7?
Nope. You've got a +5. Because proficiency in charisma isn't a thing, you mean proficiency in charisma saves which is a different thing altogether than ability checks
If you have proficiency in an ability directly, it's for the 'save'. For example, for fighters:
Proficiencies
Armor: All armor, shields
Weapons: Simple weapons, martial weapons
Tools: None
Saving Throws: Strength, Constitution
This means if you ever have to roll a constitution save against something like a spell or poison, you can add your proficiency bonus as well as your ability modifier.
In the case of charisma saving throws, they're often used against effects that would teleport you against your will, for example. That's what you're proficient at.
Exactly
I can't link it, but it's between id:customize and id:guide on desktop. I'm not sure what the interface looks like on mobile.
At first level at the very least
Wait am I accidentally including a proficiency there
Well, if you're proficient in arcana. If you're not, you just have a +1
And skills are like a bonus to the rolls related to it right?
I suppose it's one way to put it, but a more accurate way is to say that a given skill is linked to an ability. It's always formulated as "Ability (skill) check"
Like "A DC 15 Strength (athletics) check"
So if I’m doing a roll for athletics and I get a 10, my +4 skill in athletics will turn it into a 14?
Yes, exactly
Ok thanks
Now the only thing I have left is my attacks and spellcasting on my sheet and idk what to put there
And to have a +4 in athletics at first level, you would need to have 14 or 15 strength and proficiency in the athletic skill
For equipment I just out chain mail and polearm
Oh and prob a torch
Your attack rolls work similarly. If you are proficient with the attack, you take the ability you use for the attack (strength or dexterity for weapons, a mental one for spells), and add your proficiency bonus
Ah ok
I'm new to dnd and there really isn't a dnd space at all in my city (all the group chats are dead and all my 2 game stores don't have any players). where do i start? i bought the dnd essentials kit at my local book store.
Have you read the rules?
i just started going through the mini rule book this kit comes with
That'd be a good first step. There are also explainer videos like Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School on YouTube. You can find games on YouTube and Twitch if you want to see how gameplay proceeds.
We have Looking for Group/Game channels on the server if you're interested in connecting with others to get a game going.
What are some good resources to use for DND? [digital]
ive been watching die of laughter is that ok for gameplay wise?
I don't know it, but I wouldn't take any single show as the way to play. Just recognize it as a single example. Watch different ones, even for a few minutes, to see the various approaches.
That depends on what sorts of purposes you need said resources for!
Looking for NPC statblocks, for instance, is very different from a virtual tabletop or campaign manager.
I dont really know myself lol, im pretty new so I dont neccessarily know what I need myself. I got the basic rules n shit but thats it tbh LOL.
All you really need to play D&D is people, dice, character sheets, the rules, and an adventure. Anything beyond that is extra. Maybe once you get playing you'll discover what you need and then you can ask for more targeted recommendations!
What about like monsters, etc?
You can find monster statblocks in the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/monsters#MonsterStatBlocks
@harsh fjord is there a way to get a full list without it being in alphabetical order to sese what there is
Hi!
Someone made an Excel sheet of the Basic Rules monsters: https://www.reddit.com/r/dndnext/comments/2deaje/sortable_basic_rules_monster_list/?rdt=38700
i just joined the server
Welcome!
u need access dnag
dang
Sorry, that's all I could find.
Thats fine, preciate the help
i have played tested with some friends but I have never had a proper dnd campain
and I've been looking to play sometime
I made a half-elf rogue who specializes in cons/stealing. Can I double check - will this guy have any spells I have to worry about or am I good? I’m a bit rubbish at the whole spellcasting thing at the moment.
You mean spells cast against them? Fireball is always a bad time for anyone in range of it.
can a tiefling be in not just FR, but eberron, Ravenloft, & dragonlance, too?
Can someone simplify the difference between a dex based fighter and strength based please?
From the perspective of someone who hasn’t played this game before
They can bes yes as explained in the adventure league players guide. For more details head over to #adventurers-league
arcane trickster is the only rogue subclass that gets spellcasting, so if you don't choose that you're fine
Strength based fighters are going to excel in all melee weapons because most melee weapons rely on using strength.
While a dex based fighter is going to excel in bows and crossbows because they rely on using dexterity.
The only melee weapons that use dexterity are those with the fínese property like the rapier does.
Thank you! Perfect. Will picking one over the other cut you off from any key feats or proficiency or maneuvers or anything?
hi, where do i start to learn the basics of dnd? i kept seeing this guy on youtube shorts read dnd 'world heritage' reddit posts and it got me interested in wanting to try the game, sorry

@little shard have a look at these resources
ohh okay, thanks
I just wrote this for new players with some stuff you can get to play:
I watched a video about a guy getting stuff just from the dollar tree, and having enough stuff to be able to host a session, it was really cool, but the reason I say this is because he only bought:
construction paper,
miniatures (like kids toys not expensive ones),
Dice,
wrapping paper (upside down has grid lines like a play mat),
markers (to make a DM screen).
index cards (I think he got these, didn't show the behind of the DM screen tho),
paper (he wrote down his character information on paper instead of printing character sheets),
(he also used basic rules, but you have a phone so you can see that anytime).
So yes you can play for pretty cheap if you do it like this so it's not just theatre of the minds.
BUT truthfully all you need is dice, character sheets, basic rules, pencils and friends.
idk if I can send the link of the video or not so I won't but it was awesome, one of the reasons I wanted to start dnd, because it was a creative way to play, and the game itself was also very creative and fun.
Not particularly. Though if you lean into a strength based fighter you'll want to make dexterity your dump stat and thus your dexterity based skill roll will be lowered.
Thanks so much!!!! That’s what the things I read seemed to indicate but I wasn’t 100%. Appreciate the help!
soo i read a bit of it (ill finish reading that stuff/links tmrw. its getting late for me) but i just wanted to ask is it allowed for me to possibly make a character thats a feral cat (as in a walksonfourlegs cat) or is that too normal-reallife-y
anyone have a free campaign thats starting i could join?

There are catfolk, but you can't play a housecat in D&D normally. A DM may allow that, but I'd guess your chances of finding one who will permit it are slim. Basically, it doesn't fit into how the game plays.
aw:( okay, i guess ill just have to hope my friend gets enough free time and motivation to learn how to dm (they mentioned maybe doing so before, some months ago, anyway) cus theyre used to my shenanigans so im sure theyd let me lol. thanks for answering my dumb question
You could also DM a one shot where they can be a player.
That can provide good way to spark that interest and motivation to get into dnd.

Ah okay! Thank you

I understand a tiny bit of dnd as i used to play it like 3 years ago, I'd still call myself a new player but how do i find more people to play with, I've looked at nearby places in my area and nobody plays, is there a way of doing it online?

I'm also new to DnD, looking for a mentor I've always wanted to play but never knew how to
Scroll up a smidge, there are posts from Zero and the Dyno with plenty of helpful links.
Hello I'm new and would love to run a basic Campaign with someone that knows how to play. I've always been very interested in D&D and would love to lean more about it

#find-a-game for here and Spread your net wide there are lot of places to look for games other than here `iamrazorwing's Game Finding Guide
@fresh fable i have been looking at rool 20 as whel but it hasent suseded yet
How long have you been looking?
@fresh fable a long time my

Casting stat? How?
Ability score improvements at lvl 4,8,12,16
It also increase as your proficiency bonus gets higher
So next lvl you you can put 2 points into charisma
Sometimes you can find items that increase ability scores like charisma, but they are typically fairly rare and some DMs don't like using them at all.
@fresh fable if you want i can send you my charakter sheet
Post a link here or #character-discussion
Looks fine but you need to equip your armour and weapons so your attacks show up
the dm is showd it to sead ther is no flaws
As Enoki said it mostly looks fine you just need to equip your weapons & armor
ok
However, I noticed you started out with a revolver, which isn’t one of the weapons a Rogue can start out with (nor do they have proficiency in firearms). Did you homebrew a special version with your DM?
Is it just me or is your proficiency bonus doubled for all your skills
You’ll also need to give yourself proficiency in Revolvers (or firearms in general) in order to use it effectively, since Rogues don’t get proficiency in firearms
Oh just a couple
it was maed with point buy
An evil thief whose closest bond is with his own weapons and wants to embrace darkness. Well, it's your party...
What class and subclass are you?
im huma roge
I was looking at their sheet ^
Ah whoops slight misread
Yeah they have expertise in those skills where their PB is doubled
Your DM? I though you we struggling to find a game
yes im that game is still in production
i have no idia if that game will hapin or not
bro your profile pick is scary
thife roge human
As Mr Smith implied, just make sure your party is ok playing with an evil character with presumably criminal/evil goals
Also make sure you add Revolver or Firearm proficiency to your sheet or else you won’t be able to use your Revolver
ok

Inspiration is something granted by the DM. You can only have one Inspiration at a time. Using it gives you advantage to your d20 roll (attack, saving throw, ability skill check).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#Inspiration -
Proficiency Bonus is the modifier (which is based on your character level) you add to d20 rolls you a proficien with, such as weapons attacks, spell attacks, saving throws (based on your class), and ability skill checks (you choose these with your class).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#ProficiencyBonus -
Certain spell attacks and hazards (traps, poisons, diseases) may require you to roll a saving throw to avoid partially or completely its effect. The DM will tell you which ability score saving throw to roll for.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#SavingThrows -
Some skills. Be more specific.
-
Speed. This is the number of feet your character can move during their turn in combat. Your character's speed is determined by their race and possbily class (see monk), feats, and/or magic items.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/adventuring#Speed -
Alignment is roughly what your character's ethics (law/chaos) and morality (good/evil). Alignment doesn't define your character but rather the opposite.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/personality-and-background#Alignment
@lyric fjord
Arcana
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#Arcana
Your Intelligence (Arcana) check measures your ability to recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, the planes of existence, and the inhabitants of those planes.
Religion
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#Religion
Your Intelligence (Religion) check measures your ability to recall lore about deities, rites and prayers, religious hierarchies, holy symbols, and the practices of secret cults.
Animal Handling
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#AnimalHandling
When there is any question whether you can calm down a domesticated animal, keep a mount from getting spooked, or intuit an animal’s intentions, the DM might call for a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. You also make a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check to control your mount when you attempt a risky maneuver.
Medicine
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/using-ability-scores#Medicine
A Wisdom (Medicine) check lets you try to stabilize a dying companion or diagnose an illness.
I have never played DnD but I want to try it out and I don’t know how to join a group of people to play with
Nudge up to the Dyno post just above, there are some helpful links there.
Thanks
@lyric fjord before we get in trouble come over here.
The best one i'd suggest, watch swindler's den.
Yes - per server rules, please stay on topic
See #channel-guide for directions to the best possible channel for specific D&D topics
back to our convo. Yeah swindler's den - lost mine campaign.
Cause as a kinda newer dm I want to make the experience as fun as possible
highly suggest you listen in on that. Grizz was a new dm for that whole series. Its not MATT MERCER - the legend as some call him. Not everyone is matt mercer and running these epic voice actor campaigns.
They're more what your going to be doing. No one will ever compare to matt. That guy is really fricken good at what he does. His work is incredible and well his party is all voice actors. You'll never get the matt mercer table. And that's okay. Even he says that's okay because that's theatre not d&d. They're creating a story that people want to watch, your creating a story your players want to live in.
but youll watch grizz fumble through the book, be unsure on how to rule things, a player may say "hey this is the ruling" that's the type of dming you should start with.
as for learning d&d mechanics. Grab the players handbook & Dungeon Master Guide. That combo will teach you everything if you read the books cover to cover (aside from reading every race, class, and background cause that's not important to memorize on day 1)
Ok
Or basic rules and a free adventure is all you need to start DMing
My main issue is just idk trying to find a good idea for a campaign and sticking with it, also combat it a lil confusing
^i always forget about the srd
I like to make a whole map and towns and new weapons etc..
Peril in pine brook is a good start for first time SMs
you'll get there. Do you own any of the books or campaign books?
