a lot of your early sessions may go slow as you are figuring out the rules. What I recommend is during the game make a decision on things as quickly as possible, write the question down, and later throughout the week go and research it. That way the game still moves forward, everyone has fun, and you have plenty of time to figure out how it actually works
will keep in mind!
they asked if they could make there own characters for next time
thats a no go then?
I mean, its your game so why not?
i dont want them to be OP, or is the character creator of DND beyond good?
I would recommend starting at level 1 so you can learn all the tiny simple things first because it gets more complicated as you progress in level
Making their own characters will help them get invested in the game and world
oh I don't think you need to worry about them being op
Just follow the steps for character creation in the basic rules or on the DND beyond site and it'll work out just fine
perfect
the biggest contributor to OP characters would be lucky rolled scores, so just say they need to use standard array or point buy
Yes, I'd definitely recommend sticking to Standard Array for ability score selection
just standard starting equipment from class and background
Each background and class have their own starting equipment
yeah i have found a page about starting GP
Yeah, that's where you'll want to get that info
starting GP is an alternative to that which I wouldnt recommend for new players
Mostly because it makes things more complicated. Check out how the classes grant you starting equipment, for example: it's all nice and simple
because the choice of potential gear to pick is enourmous and picking the right stuff requires some experience with the game. plus DMs might want to veto stuff like horses if it doesnt fit the game
and how do you make your players level?
You've got two options:
- Complicated, but extremely fair: track the xp given by each monster they kill and level them up according to xp charts
- Simple, but up to interpretation: just grant them a level whenever you feel like they've done something important
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at 1st level and advances in level by adventuring. Gaining a level improves your attributes, can unlock new class features or new spells, and generally increases your might as an adventurer.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. In these campaigns, experience points (XP) fuel level advancement and are most often the reward for completing combat encounters. When your total XP reaches certain thresholds, you gain a level.
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
A character can grow to a maximum of 20th level. Your DM might have you begin at a higher level, or might end the campaign at a lower one. Some games continue past 20th level with the use Epic Boons.
(exp can and should also be granted for doing things other than killing)
If you'd like to have your character reviewed, it'd be better to post it in #character-discussion
ok sorry
I’m new to dnd
We should include in the whole new player advert shtick something about base human politeness towards dm's

Up above is everything you need to know
Thank you kindly
So, I'm trying to make a EK, but at level 3 I don't have a EK option?
Cuz ya need to buy the book if you're doin a dnd beyond sheet
Ah, I see, thanks
Okay listen I've just been trying to find a group my group of 2 years stopped playing recently and I've been literally searching all day to no avail so we're would I go to look for a group thanks.
Does subscribing to DnD Beyond agrant me access to creating the class?

depending on the book, sometimes they let you buy just a subclass for D&Dbeyond for like 3 bucks
Not any more
A la carte purchasing of specifc items is no longer available with the new marketplace
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
oh for real?
Yes it was a recent change.

man that was my favorite thing was just being able to buy the one thing I wanted instead of the entire book
Well... I guess I have to wait until Sept 17?
Do you mean for the 2024 Players Handbook? Then yes.
If you mean the 2014 Players Handbook, you can still buy that (and can continue to buy it after the 2024 book release).
Zero has a good overview of some major places to look: #dnd-newcomers message
You can also check out my Looking for Game/Group guide for even more options of where/how to search.
Let me be fully honnest with you, aint no way any dms will accept the new phb,at least not as soon as it comes up
currently the dnd community is in a bit of a "revolution", so I doubt that dms will accept any of the new books untill things have settled,so I advise buying the old phb, the changes to the new one are so minimal ya can just homebrew it in later
I have studied for some time now (like 2-5 hours) and the only thing I really studied is most of Basic Rules character creation part 1 and the whole parts talking about Dwarves and Elfs. Should I be worried?
No,dnd is a verry complex hobby,no shame in taking your time
no? everyone reads at their own pace.. character creation can cover a lot of ground. No rush, take your time. and the chat can help if you have any questions about what you have read
good to know it's normal to have this little itch on my brain, thank you and have a great day!
That’s not the common opinion, and it’s reductive and misleading to state otherwise to newcomers
Have ya been anywhere on social media lately?Everything about people being generally unhappy with one dnd
Plus, only the new phb is coming out,so its hard to have a game of a new edition when no actual dm ressources are provided :<
most of the new things I thought were kinda fun and interesting
Yes…? I talk in this server everyday, and there’s a general consensus that most of the changes are improvements while a few of them (looking at Ranger and Paladin) are more disputed
Me too especially the monk rebalance, but from what ive read people are unhappy with the rest
Let me make it clear this discord dosent promote anything against wotc in the slightest so almost all negative comments are removed, try to look in more neutral spaces
ello, hows everyone doing?
That’s simply false, this server explicitly allows anti-WotC comments as long as everyone is being respectful.
Uh... not true. Criticism is fine if it's kept civil and productive.
Well thats odd last time I said something about the ogl I was insta warned for "promoting negative and false information",even thought the ogl incident was pretty darn real
this discussion isn't really suited for a newcomers channel we have an entire section for the 2024 books here: https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1026901431132885064
And we do allow criticism as Noob and Sam have specified.
We've been doin great, how might we help?
eh im kinda just chilling right now, a bit confused on how to find a game, the amount of text in the ' find a game ' channel makes my head spin TwT.
If folks have further questions about server rules or a moderation action, please come to #moderator-support and simply state "I'd like to speak with a moderator" and we can create a private thread to discuss things. And now back to D&D.
Try taking your time about reading it,no need to do it in a single sitting
Take breaks, drink water, and read the information at your pace
If you have any questions or missunderstanding about a specific portion of the text,we're here to help
Yeah don't feel like you have to "know all the things" - I've been playing this game for a while and I still mess things up (even when it's on my character sheet in front of me!)
But don't skip too much of it either,or else you might look in the wrong channel (happened to me an akward ammount of times)
if you are a player looking for a game you can look in #looking-for-players - that is where a DM will go to post about their games and player requirements. You can reply to the threads for those posts to get involved.
To make a post of your own as a player looking for DM you'd use a command to post in #looking-for-dm - the commands are all in #find-a-game /looking in almost any channel should auto-prompt with options like looking-for dm. when you type that and hit enter, a form will populate for you to fill out and submit.
Does that help?
As a note: you cannot type in the chat bar in any of the looking for channels.. but can type the commands pretty much everywhere else
ive only played one campaign before with my friends and it never properly ended, we had to stop due to people being too busy
As a reminder #looking-for-dm is where you want to go to make an application if you're a PLAYER looking for a dm
#looking-for-players is where DMS put out campaigns for players to join
Number 1 ennemy of dnd is scheduling
yeaa, main thing i remember doing is trying to pick a lock... failing... and ripped it off out of rage.. task failed successfully?
Hey as long as its done did the troubles really matter?
fair enough lol
sure here is kinda a brief idea. Everyone has different sets of things they are good at depending on how many points are in their scores. When you are trying to do something, the DM will likely ask you to roll a d20 and then you add onto whatever you roll based on how good you are at the action
You take on the role of an adventurer, and take part in an epic fantasy story where the other main characters are played by the other players at the table. The antagonists, side characters and narration of the world around you is played by the Dungeon Master who will present the party with all manner of challenges for them to overcome
just "dice" basically
Ah ok
yeah like a d4 is a 4-sided die
Cool
d20s are the most common one you will roll for things
Good to know
Ok
Next things character making/designing are there any specifics u need to do?
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
Cool
lots! we can start with something simple. What kind of fantasy character are you trying to create
I'm not sure
The best way to get started with learning to build characters is to read through the Basic Rules
I only joined this sever cos ive seen a lot of dnd vids and the like and was interested in what it was. Not sure if im wanting to join a campaign or whatever it is
Ok

Theres also a few other links, if reading isn't really your vibe
reading through the rules is definitely the way to go. D&Dbeyond is a website you can go to and start working on creating a character
Ok
I'm thinking something along the lines of a rouge mountain dwarf with the ability scores as:
Srtength 15
Dexterity 14
Constitution 13
Charisma 12
Intelligence 10
Wisdom 8
Is that any good? Still other stuff to sort out
I wouldn't recommned having a low Wis score because there are a lot of Wisdom saving throws and ability skills.
so this may seem weird but you really don't want to have high strength on a rogue
Ok
I would swap Wisdom with Strength.
Good to know
the top 3 highest I would do would be DEX, followed by CON, followed by either CHR or WIS depending on if you think you would be talking more or not
Rite
I want like a stealthy dwarf
So
DEX 15
CON 14
WIS 13
STR 12
INT or CHA 10 then other 8
yeah so DEX is used for stealth and sleight of hand (pick pocket type stuff). On top of that, you use weapons that have a property called "finesse" which mean that you use DEX when calculating the damage instead of STR (technically optional).
Ok
yeah I would do the INT as 8 and the CHA as 10 but you can make a case for either. Its honestly not uncommon to even have the STR being the lowest score you have because most everything you have will be calculated with DEX
Im gonna look at equipment now
Im thinking just a hide or chain shirt then a dagger (simple melee), rapier (martial melee), maybe a sling (simple range), hand crossbow (martial range)
I assume I can only hv one melee and range
nah you can pick multiple melee or multiple ranged weapons if your starting equipment permits it. It's just generally unneccesary
it depends on your Class and Background
Ok
Well class is rouge hvnt figured background out yet
Wanting some kind of stealth theivery equipment
As a rogue you should get Thieves Tools as part of your starting equipment
They will let you make Abilty Checks to pick locks, disarm traps and other sneaky stuff
I got a question if someone can help me out in a few about a set up
Hopefully pickpocket with people ideal
feel free to post whatever questions you have, no need to ask for permission
Cool
Proficiency in the Sleight of Hand skill will let you do that well. If you want to be reallllly good at it you could choose it as one of your 'Expertises'
Ok
Well I made a wood elf ranger with a soldier background. I rolled for the stats but I feel like I messed up
how did you roll?
I got,
Str 8
Dex 17
Con 11
Int 11
Wis 10
Cha 12
I mean, seems fine to me
So, so far I hv a mountain dwarf, rouge, ability scores are
DEX 15
CON 14
WIS 13
STR 12
INT or CHA 10 then other 8
Hvnt got a background made up yet put pickpocket and people ideal
Theives tools
Weaponry is a dagger or smth light and quiet
Did you use dice or Point Buy?
Okay, don't assume when you have a DM that they'll let you keep that character.
DMs prefer to witness dice rolls.
This any good?
If I do want to get into D&D fully then I would need to buy dice do all the rolls for extra points or whatever buy I think for only learning this stuff tonight this looks good
Yes that seems like a fine character - can always check with folks in #character-discussion if you want more feedback.
Ok
I'd make sure to use the starting equipment your class starts with
See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/classes#ClassesSummary (find your class - it will list their starting equipment). You can start with that equipment (listed under Equipment for that class).
So mine would be a hand crossbow and a rapier
I am new to DnD I just started playing with a group of friends and I have no idea what I am doing. They directed me to use the SourceForge 3.5e Character Maker and I have been trying to use the Necromancer HandBook to create a Dark Spell caster but I have no idea what spells what feats and what skills I should be going into. I'm level 2 now and I don't seem to be very effective at all; is there a good 3.5e vanilla rule set Wizard planner I can use to try and make a decent character out there?
So you're playing D&D 3.5 edition? I'd suggest checking in with the folks in #dnd-elder-editions.
The current edition is D&D 5th edition.

I don’t know why you’re asking us, ask your friend if it’s okay.
well that makes sense, have a great day :)
I mean its funny, but like ask THEM
Can Druids control sugar is it still a plant?
Because I want to be the muffin man in dnd
Will Drury lane be a campaign setting? 😂
how common are homebrewed campaigns with 60/40 rp combat?
Decent-ish, im currently running a homebrew game 60% combat 40% rp, the reverse should be easy to find
i havent played dnd since I was a kid so reading all this again and watching a few videos makes me wanna play! I am a better hands on learning than by watching yt videos, but anyone have recommendations for somewhere i could learn in a shorter amount of time. I wanna try a small campaign this weekend
Keep your eyes on the server's Events tab for the virtual weekends, which do feature learn-to-play sessions! If you're willing to spend some money, you can find learn-to-play sessions on StartPlaying, a website for paid tabletop play. (Free ones on that site are harder to come by, but they do exist.)
Thanks. Sounds like fun

yay thank you
Feel free to ask questions as you work your way through those links.
thank you!!
if I'm being completely honest, i got into this becuase of stranger things. i have no prior knowledge, but this is all so cool :))) cannot wait to get addicted
That's not an uncommon entry point for folks. Hope you find yourself a new hobby to love!
anyone have a dnd beyond campaign i could join to create a character, now that i cant buy seperate i dont got enough cash to buy whole books ?
That'd be against D&D Beyond's terms of service.
Check the pinned messages !
so, how common are dms that incorporate backstory stuff
same, i just came here from a podcast
Can't tell you the % on that,if you want a guarante on quality look into paid dms
ah dam
Sadly its hard to know the dming style of someone in advance
In my experience it's dependent on both the campaign and the DM. Some campaigns take place in areas that have little to no relation or involvement points for a character's backstory (i.e. if most of your backstory involves living in an obscure village on the Material Plane and the campaign takes place in the Nine Hells). Some might be in a format where backstory is largely irrelevant, such as a dungeon crawl or west marches style of campaign.
In any case if you want a DM that puts a decent emphasis on including player backstory into the campaign it's always worth it to ask before joining. Worst case they say they don't and you can either compromise or move on to find a different group to play with.
Reminder and wwarning:
Dnd is not at all the same experience than the one seen in fiction, as most movies and mentions of it only put on the "hight intensity moments", dnd has a lot of things and rules to be aware off,so don't hop in expecting dice rolls and epic battles during a first session, if you want theirs a ton of youtubers out there that simplify dnd for newcommers to understand!
Dnd does contain a fair share of roleplaying and improve from the players part
what its NOT thought is make believe,as there are strict rules in place,so make sure to check those out!
lucky for me i got into dnd by a podcast
are there one offs in this server?
Podcast dnd is also extremely unrealistic with actual games
Lemme give it to ya, you're not a 5 star voice actor, and your dm isnt Matt Mercer, so you really have to make sure that actual dnd is the experience that you want
I advise hopping into a one shot first
Something to get into dnd without committing to a full campaign
well, im trying to do my first campaign as a play by post
Thats great,hope it goes well!
Different campaign styles are great for different players, it's all about finding the right match. PBP games are less common than traditional format games, but there are occasional listings posted in #find-a-game
(I never tried play by post I really have to test it some day)
Just need to be patient
To build on this, you'll get better results when you use a campaign's setting and premise as the ground work to create a backstory over making one in a vacuum.
For example, let's say that a campaign adventure is about protecting a young prince, who is the soon to be future king. For that campaign, a backstory that explains how a character became a knight is going to be integral and easier for a DM to incorporate into the campaign.
sadly it looks like vc and by-session is way more common, so it'll probably take a while before i get my first campaign
Trying different avenues for finding a game really helps. Outside of this server I recommend Reddit's r/lfg subreddit for PBP games specifically.
How do I get started with dnd

whats a book of lore?
Happy to help
Can you clarify what you mean?
Like a book about the dnd lore?
#dnd-lore shoulld have an answer.
In a Scholars pack that you can get as a base item for wizard, there is a book of lore. I searched and found nothing on it
It's basically flavour with no game mechanic benefits.
maybe the dm can make it have info on a certain part of the lore in their world or something like religions or history or something
Y'all can anybody help up w dicecloud I did smth and idk how to fix it

Why does Hippogriff have a high Perception, when its Wisdom modifier is +1 and its PB is +2. It should have Perception +3, or am I missing something?

thank you! I did check most of the things provided and I'm looking through how to get started with being a DM, my one question now regards the "styles" of DND I don't know how to deal with that
As a new DM, you won't really have an idea as to what kinds of games you like to run just yet. The usual recommendation is to follow a pre-written adventure to get a handle of the game before anything else
My recommendation is to run a prewritten adventure that is “beginner friendly” (a lot of them are pretty easy to understand), I recommend dragon of Icespire peak
Hello! Where can I create a character sheet?
You can use D&D Beyond or fill in a blank PDF (https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/DnD_5E_CharacterSheet_FormFillable.pdf).
I will look into that thank you very much :D

What are good die for a starter?
What do you mean good die? Any dice works if that’s what you mean
I just recommend getting a full set of dice, most importantly a d20, d6
I still recommend getting others though
Just get a standard polyhedral set:
- d20
- d12
- d10
- d% (a d10 but the sides go 10, 20, 30...90, 00)
- d8
- d6
- d4
You can get 'expanded' sets that include 2d20s for advantage/disadvantage, and 4d6s for stat rolling, but that's not essential
There's no specific brand or style you need. The number of faces is the only thing that matters
For clarification, d6 (for example) just means "A six sided dice"
You can find them pretty cheap at a local gamestore
Yeah, cheap dice are fine
Or use dice online
Hey everyone, i am going to play my first game as a dungeon master. I might ask questions from time to time. Thanks for having me
They're not going to be "unbalanced" whatever,
I hope you enjoy your game we are happy to help
I've seen a bulk thing of 7 sets of dice for like £7 on Amazon
You probably don’t need that many dice but it’s a good deal
True, but my Autistic ass misplaces things all the time
A local group I was looking at makes you pick a colour of dice too
Which doesn't make sense to me
That's not a standard requirement of the game, but people can be particular about dice
See, I didn't think it would be.
I took upon finding the book for dragon of Icespire peak, I read some bullet points and I will finish the whole thing to make sure I get a full grasp on it but how do I find players? I tried to follow the instructions but I don't know how to use the Bot provided in the channel

A player tried to punch another one. He got 7 on a dc of 10, so i said his punch grazed.
The one that was being punched was a halfling, does that matter?
Do players have to do a initiative check, or do we use the initiative value stated on the character sheet to determine which player starts first.
Lets say a player randomly hits another player, does that count as a surprise attack?
Lets say a player wants to hit a another player, what kind of dc do they have to make? Dexterity or strength. And does the player being attacked have to do a dexterity check to dodge? Or does that only works traps and stuff?
Btw we are playing the fifth edition starter set
@uncut beacon So there's a lot going on here, have you read the basic rules?
I'd say it's a surprise attack, and to treat it like any other fight...
PVP is kinda beyond the scope of this channel, so let's stick to the basics
We kinda did read until chapter 2. We decided to check as we go but its been slow. We are enjoying it though
Wait is this Discord server for playing or learning
- PvP (Player vs Player) is generally frowned upon and you should decide out of game with the whole group if its even allowed
- grazed is not a thing, and punches are attacks, so no DC. it woudl be to hit vs. AC
- Initiative is called before an attack is executed. Dm might rule this as surprise but RAW, you cant get surprise without successfully hiding before
- Attacks are made against a creatures AC, not a DC
- Halflings specifically do not have any ability that would change their AC, few races do
- The initiative modifier on a character sheet is just that, a modifier. Each participant in a combat rolls a d20, adds their initiative modifier, and you go from highest to lowest
- Surprise isn't a type of attack, it's a sort of condition and has it's own rules

Oh
and you can find games here that are off-server
Folk do organise games here over in the #find-a-game channel.
Ah ok
Okay guys thanks
In any channel where you are able to type, type /looking. You should see a list of options pop up; select the appropriate channel for where you want your ad to appear. Hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post in the channel you selected.
Are all games played through this discord or just meet dms and players here?
Games aren't played on the server. This is a discussion place and folks organize games using the Looking for channels.
This is all seems a bit daunting
You don't need to learn it all at once! No one does.
ah thank you
There are the learn-to-play games through the virtual weekends, advertised in the server's Events tab. Otherwise, you just need to ask folks if they're open to newcomers.
In my experience, big DnD community servers that host games often have fairly regular newbie friendly games
And any group who would be disappointed by a new player's lack of knowledge instead of helping them along is maybe not a great group to play with. You just need to find folks you're compatible with.
That said, the pinned messages in this channel and #learn-to-play do have lots of info so you're not starting from zero.
davyd can you recommend any material I can read for new players?

Not Davyd, but those are a good start
like, you reading them new material or do you want material to read?
everything seems too complex to start with, i want to start with something simple and work my way up
KickAceGuy are you new too?
the links above are pretty good at giving you new info step by step
It's a lot to take in, but once you get into it, it starts to make sense and get easeir
I feel it would be easiest to learn by playing
Hence the learn-to-play sessions I mentioned.
Not many folks are good with just bringing on strangers who made no effort at learning.
Oh I didn’t realise they were actual sessions
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there are some simple term guides and a turn guide here
It's actually kind of the opposite. Going into a normal game with no information slows the game down and is rather disruptive to the other players. Unless you're joining a game specifically for new players to learn the ropes, it's best that you do some reading up on the rules.
The effort you spend to try and understand how to create a character sheet, how combat works, and how skill checks and saving throws work the more you'll get out of your first D&D game (and more likely to get into said first game).
You don't have to know everything, you don't have to memorize it all - but being familiar with it will make you a better player at the table.
Some people learn faster and better by doing the thing they want to learn to do, than to just read about it.
I have read about the dice rolls and character creations but classes and races I have no idea on. Septre is exactly right
I come to 5e after playing 1e/2e for 20+ years, so I've a grasp on the basics of character building and the like. Just 5e has extra stuff that I've never used and new things to offer.
If you feel you have a decent grasp of things, do feel free to try and find a game. See #find-a-game to learn how to use our LFG channels here to find a group or game to join.
When I make a character, I have a class in mind, then I read to see which races are favorable for that class and how their racial traits may affect the stats needed for that class. 🙂
Sure, that's definitely true, and it's why some places offer those new player specific games.
But think of it like this: if a player is unwilling to learn beforehand and joins up with a normal game, it's like they're unprepared for a group activity. Every time they need to stop the flow of the game to ask questions that they could have answered by reading the rules, it's going to become frustrating for everyone else who did put in the time to learn.
I wouldn’t say you are inconveniencing people, everyone was new at some point and all the tables I’ve played at are welcoming of all lvls
can someone teach me how to play

I'm not saying to jump into an already established game as a newbie, unless the DM is cool with it, or you have a friend or two already in that game willing to help you out... If your a newbie, it's always best to find a game just starting, or one especially created to help newbies to learn.
Welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the basic rules linked above. We also have a set of videos if you're more of a visual learner, and we have the #learn-to-play channel for more resources. If you've got any specific questions, we'll be happy to help you here!
I'm certainly not refuting that - it's just unlikely that your average game is going to only have new players who specifically haven't read the rules.
👆print yourself out some of these I still use one after years of playing
I've not run into too many people who have not read the basics. And those who haven't, just hadn't done so yet cause they were overwhelmed and didn't know where to start until someone said, "This is a good spot to start," even if it's like chapter 5 of the PHB (just picking a random chapter lol).
But yeah, def at least watch some youtube video's.. Lots of them out there that are entertaining and you don't realize your learning while being entertained.
Well, this conversation is happening specifically because someone doesn't want to read the basic rules.
Are you saying I do not want to read the basic rules?
I wasn't referring to you, no.
Okay good
I didn't see anyone flat out refuse, just people saying they started and were overwhelmed with information and got confused. Which is totally normal.
and I will totally share this extra information with a friend who's also new to 5e... some cool stuff here...
5e is the newest dnd edition right?
That's correct
But not everyone uses that right?
Not everyone, though probably it has the largest player base among the editions.
No. I'm an old schooler.. 1e/2e ... a lil of 3.5..
People still play older editions but the majority of D&D players play 5E.
I just dm’d dnd for a group who have never played it. I never have played either. The blind leading the blind. I kinda made an easier and quicker version of the rules to learn and play. The dice rolls are scuffed but it is fun. It’s what brought me here. I’d like to try a character role in a real game
how do you work a character sheet? like how do you put inthe stat points, abilities, ect?
I mean, that's really the key: if you had fun. There's no competition for who's playing the realest version. But if you want to learn, there are multiple ways. The Basic Rules linked in the pins are the fundamentals. But you could also watch YouTube videos such as Handbooker Helper or WASD20's Rules School. Or jump into a learn-to-play session, which can be found through the virtual weekends or on sites like StartPlaying (which do cost money, but them's the breaks in the modern age).
We have all played Fallout so I just used the SPECIAL stats from that. I just switched Luck for Magic
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
I just made it whatever the points you have in that trait it adds directly to dice rolls, but it just made for insanely high rolls
Eg 5 in strength and roll a 5, 5+5=10
That's a core mechanic for tons of RPGs: roll a die, add a number (usually connected to stats or skills), try to meet or exceed a target number. Or roll under.
See the bot message just posted.
Also read the first chapter of the free basic rules as it goes through creating a character sheet step by step.
thanks
It was fun but we wanted the whole story finished in one night (just so they could get a taste of dnd and see if we would like to make it a regular thing). We did not finish it all tonight 😂
“D&D 5e” is one specific game, with a specific set of rules. There are other tabletop games out there, and people play those too. But this is a server specifically for 5e. It sounds like you and your friends made up your own game instead
this usually depends upon how the DM wants it done, though the PHB makes suggestions on how to do it. Best to talk to the DM before rolling up a character.
thank you
The conventional advice is to practice making a character so you go through the process (and hopefully come to understand some of the rules). Don't expect to use the character as is, though, because the DM and table you join may have specific parameters. But you know more than if you'd never tried at all.
hides the 13ish characters she made just to see how different racial/class/kits/etc work
Nothing wrong with that!
I've been making copies and changing stuff everywhere for 2 weeks now 😂 got a much better understanding of the different classes and their features
i have ideas for a dwarf wizard who chose the school of necromancy
I come to 5e with 1e/2e knowledge, so I'm not a total newbie.... lol ..
Man the absurd amount of characters I’ve made just for the heck of it
i think i should print out the character sheet
Hi I'm new
hi new, I'm...okay I will stop
Dang, beat me to it 😂
😭
Is it ok to to play with strangers I have no friends
And if so, where can f
I find a group
Sure, probably a good chunk of the server does just that.
sure, lots of people play with strangers
#find-a-game is where to start your search.
I have a quick question. I am looking online to get some models for a game and I am unsure what to call the structuers and buildings. Like if I want to have a 3d castel and Trees and what not is there a D&D site for that stuff or do people just order random models from places to fit there needs?
Not really a newcomer question, try #dnd-minis
I make mine
So me as a new comer not sure where to go asking that here is the wrong place?
Correct, which is why I directed you to the right place
This channel is for newcommer topics; getting started with D&D, beginner questions, etc
For topics beyond that scope, such as your one about finding miniatures, we'll direct you to the appropriate channel
Is there a way to filter on looking for players by "allowing newcomers" or smth
Here specifically? Not really. You'd need to read the descriptions or just ask
You could search for "newcomer" or "beginner" in #looking-for-players
Can't speak for other platforms, but given that as part of finding games you should be asking questions anyway, "Is this a beginner friendly/appropriate game?" is just as good as any

Thank you so much! My 11th grade homeroom teacher got me into seriously but I gave up on trying cause I couldn't find anyone or understand whatbto do so this helps a lot!
Do I really need to read all the basic rules before getting started
well you dont need to know all of the rules by heart but its a good idea to at least understand your own character and general game mechanics
its totally normal to check the book on somethign you dont know
The recommended pieces to know at minimum are how to create a character, how combat works, and how skill checks work.
Plus, you don't need to read every class and race in full.
You don't need to memorize them, but its definitely a good idea to give everything at least a quick glance. There will 4 other people there to help you remember anything you might forget, but you won't want to bog down the game over every little thing as you play
Will we be able to do it in video or will they always be text based?
Some tables play using text (this is called play-by-post), some do it with voice and video, some are strictly voice.
When you say "do it" are you referring to playing the game, or just learning the rules?

What does it mean higher powered campaigns?
Yeah, Sorcerer's are born with their powers, wizards learned it
Probably higher levels or a more difficult campaign, with expectations that your character is built well.
Mechanically, Sorcerers get their spells off of charisma instead of intelligence, they have access to metamagic
The sources on character preferences, are they allowed?
And they have more class features
Wizards get their spells ability scores off of intelligence, get more spells overall
You probably will need to ask your DM
They have different mechanical features. To put it super simply:
- Sorcerers have fewer spell options, but can power them up
- Wizards have many spell options, but have fewer tools to amplify them

Yeah I can try to help with character creation stuff, sorry I'm dealing with a few people right now
People keep telling me half elf is better then a Tiefling at bard but this is 50/50 people keep saying different things and i heard mostly because Tiefling has better feats but half elf has better stats?
Both are good for bard, I recommend playing what seems fun
alright
#character-discussion is probably a better place to get more input!
good enough for me
So you needed help with character creation correct?
Alright, so if I remember correctly you were asking about sources and what to use
I am on Dnd beyond
Cool
Alright, so when in the menu of character preferences
Im there
You don't need any of the sources, Dnd beyond already gives you the books you have bought in it. The other stuff aren't core rules really
So things like Homebrew rules, Magic the gathering content
Those are rules that aren't necessarily needed to make a character, and most DMs don't use them
i dont anything at all about d&d but it looks interesting and i kinda wanna try it 👀
Alright so the way D&D beyond works is that you can buy books online on the website and use them on the website
It is official Wizards of the Coast so it isn't a scam

I recommend the links Dyno just sent
would a vampire warlock or a vampire monk work btw?
Yeah, you can play a vampire if your DM is cool with it
Most of character creation revolves around what your DM says they are cool with
So I can't help a ton when it comes to things like saying whats allowed and whats not
D&D doesn't have vampires as a player option per the rules. The closest is a half-vampire option called a dhampir
Playing
Obviously you can make your own rules for D&D (that's called #homebrew ) but that's beyond the scope of this channel
Someone better at explaning this stuff can probably help you better than I can tbh
For now, none
This is not really true, and not helpful advice for this channel. There are very clear rules for what you can and cannot do in character creation. Some people might go outside these rules, but that is definitely not recommended for beginners.
If you don't have a DM to tell you what sources you're using, it won't matter
If you're just making a test character, you can leave the source toggles as-is
does this server host beginner campaigns for poeple like me?
No games are hosted on the server, but you can find learn-to-play sessions during the virtual weekends (see the Events tab).
Dice rolling on or off?
Optional features, Optional class features on or off. Customize your origin, on or off?
Advancement type Milestone or XP
Hit point type fixed or manual
Use prerequisites Feats on or off, multiclass requirements on or off
Show level scaled spells, on or off?
Encumbered type, use, no use, variant
Ignore coin wait on or off?
Ability score/modifier display mod top or score top?
This is the stuff I have 0 clue on choosing
Yes, yes, yes, yes, milestone, fixed, yes, yes, yes, use, on, modifier top would be my suggestions probably
Sorry, no
Just leave the defaults. Don't worry about it.
That'll depend on your DM
And yeah, defaults work fine for practice characters too 😁
How do I find a dm?
Practice character? Don't mess with the settings. Just go through, grab a race and a class, use the Standard Array and see what you can do.
Okay

Thank youuu : )
Quick question, if I play as a Rock Gnome and make a music box, can I use the music playing to like hypnotize the opponent?
Hi! I hope this is not a dumb question, but are dnd campaigns played in one session or can you play it little by little? I have never played but I am very interested ^^
There are short D&D adventures that last one session, those are called one-shots. You could have characters just for that one-shot adventure or possibly others if the same DM wants to continue with you on future adventures.
There are short adventures that last a few sessions or a few months.
Then there are campaigns that could last one (real) year or more. My current campaign has been going on for two years and will last at least another two years.
Unless your character has a class feature or the music box has a magical power, a mundane (non-magical) music box won't give you any game mechanic benefits, such as "hypnotizing" enemies.
oo interesting... thank you and have a great day!
Thank you sm!! That helps a lot and mb sorry for asking I am very new and I really don’t have any idea how anything works yet!!
Don't apologize. This channel is to help new players out to learn the game!
So I'm arriving here green like a leaf.
Which edition would be better for me to try and learn? I hear I should avoid 3E.
5E is the latest and most popular edition.
5e is the latest edition, and that's what this server is primarily used for
While D&D isn't light on rules, there are so many resources to learn them for 5e, and they supposedly lack the granular detail of earlier editions. So that (relative) simplicity contributes to its popularity.
Hi guys, how close does this get to the actual d&d experience? It being virtual and all. Never played it and was looking for an adventurers group for ages. When I had finally found one, I couldn't find a GM and when I FINALLY got a GM that was ready to go, the group already disbanded.
Also, can I invite people to this disc? We were discussing d&d in another discord and she let me know she was a gamemaster and if there was a digital version of d&d she would like to be the host.
So I searched far and wide, and I found this version / community 👀
Sorry for the shameless copy, I had posted this in discussion and had the feeling I wasn't in the right spot there
I answered your question here: #dnd-discussion message
Hey what do you reccomend is the best way to play DND online while it being as close to real life as possible? I've just come from watching a DND game and I'm interested
Thanks, I did read it.
How would we be able to create a digital adventure though? Wouldn't we all need the same digital game we entered or create the same game we mirror?
?tag new online
Appreciate it
Thank you so much
How groups play varies. Some just use text. Some use voice. Some use voice/cameras. Some use a virtual tabletop for maps and tokens. Some just rely on imagination. As long as you have the basic elements of the game (character sheets, the rules, people and a means of communication, dice, and an adventure) you can play.
can someone please the way that damage is calculated? i know this is stupid but i'm still trying to find it and nothing ;-;
It depends on the weapon or ability you're using. What kind of character do you intend to play?
i didn't decide yet but i'm checking the classes chapter of the basic rules and the hit die part is confusing me
Hit die and damage are separate.
wait wha
Your class's hit die determines your HP, not damage.
but how much hp is that then
The weapons chart shows the damage dice each weapon uses.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014/equipment#Weapons
For example, a longsword does 1d8 slashing damage plus your Str modifier.
oo nice
Each class gets their max hit die at level 1 (so the highest number), plus their Constitution modifier. A fighter uses a d10 hit die. If they have a +3 bonus to CON, their level 1 HP is 13 (10+3).
The individual spell's description says how much damage the spell does.
oh so the constitution is basically hp...
Yep, more or less.
still really need to check that, since i'm probably going to be a spellcaster
thank you both so much!
hope i can make it up someday ^^
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
you got it chief :)

With what?
What exactly did you need help with? Have you read the basic rules?
50%
Even as a DM you should familiarize yourself with the fundamental rules found in the free Basic Rules.
Understand character creation, ability skill checks, and combat work before you head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
As DM, the players will look for you for guidance.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
Additionally, check above for some tips and resources!
Maybe try something more streamlined like Peril in Pinebrook. It's not the full rules of D&D, but it might be a good on-ramp.
#character-discussion is the place for that!

Alright, so were you able to understand what an Ability Score is?
i think my struggle is my dyslexia-
lemme read it- or try
okay it's the "personality" points like in cyberpunk
Unfortunately we don't have voice channels here on this server. Perhaps a reader program could help if you struggle with text?
We also have videos that might help you out better than the text rules. Here's the one on Ability Scores
should i find a dm first?
You can.
Though your chances increase the more you know.
Think of it like this: before you find a DM, any character you make is a 'practice' character. There's a chance your DM will allow you to use your practice character, but it's not guaranteed
In the meantime you can play this tutorial game https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en

thx
It's a rules revision that is supposedly backwards compatible with 5e.
Some folks will stick with 5e 2014, some will make the jump entirely, and some are hoping to mix and match, but we don't know yet how well that'll work in practice.

Heyy everyone
I am a new comer and I want to know more about DnD because I am curious about it, is there anyone who can help me to learn some basic things?
Have you looked at the basic rules?

I am reading the rules
Is there anything more specific you’re having trouble with?
i want to ask one thing about the video
Which video?
Does those videos help me to learn completely about dnd?
Introductory videos
The "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos. What about them?
yes I guess
Not completely. They are a supplement to learning the rules to other methods.
Such as the basic rules pdf
They're tutorials, not the rules themselves. You will still need to read the rules.
gotcha
i have read all the rules, I want to learn about dnd specially about the games and characters
The links above will help you get started.
Like how to join a game?
And what do you mean by characters, if you don’t mean character creation?
yeah
Check #find-a-game
should i try to find cool class and race combos and make a list of which are useful, fun, interesting and just straight up unfair (if there is some)? maybe it will help
All classes have something that make them fun to play.
Start with what appeals to you and go from there.
Nowadays the new racial options let the player choose where to apply stat bonuses.
So pick something that interests you.
Can somwone recruit me please? Me and my friend really wanna play

Just as a heads up, the moderators ask that people request games in the looking for games channels.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- AL provides a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
There’s many depending on what you like
There’s Tritons, Sea Elves, and Tortles primarily
I did
I’m interested in the water genasi
Water genasi are great
Making a post in #looking-for-dm is a good start.
Though because there are more players than Dungeon Masters out there, players need to proactively reach out to the posts in #looking-for-players by DMs looking for players.
If you'd like I can make some recommendations to help speed things along.
Hey I'm kind of newer and I'm trying to build a druid but I'm really lost on writing a backstory, particularly writing a motivation for my character to adventure that will continue to motivate them for the whole campaign
Are they already part of a campaign?
I’m like a very big fan of sea stuff and the water genasi seem the most interesting
I kinda want to know more about them
hey! I'm new-ish to DnD. I played half a game once, haha, I'd like to get into a campaign uh... how do I go about it?

Hello! New DnD player going into their first game with friends. Trying to create characters before we play on Sunday. Does anyone have any good resources we could do to start creating a character. Maybe a step by step guide to making a character?
I'd check out this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play , which contain a link to the free basic rules
This channel's pinks also has a link to the Handbooker Helper video supplement for character creation
In addition, I recommend using D&DBeyond since their built in character creator is very well refined
My gym said dnd beyond’s app isn’t as good as regular paper n pen, I just don’t know what book to get first
That’s a matter of opinion. I find D&DBeyond more convenient since it handles all the math for me and presents the sheet in a clean format
But you are limited by the content you own or (a fellow player with a Master Subscription) owns through DDB when it comes to character creation
If your DM wants you to use paper sheets then the Handbooker Helper videos and basic rules are still relevant
So how many spells can you know. I'm using dnd beyond to make a wizard and you can know spells and have them prepared. How many can you have known.
How do i post in the “Looking for players” channel?
I want to post a game
Read #find-a-game carefully - but the bot commands start with /looking-for then select the type of post you want to make to have the bot give you a form to fill out and submit. Once submitted it creates the post in the propper channel and attaches a thread to your post. Use the thread to make any corrections/updates or handle coordination with prospective players.
A level 1 wizard knows 6 level 1 spells and can prepare a number of spells equal to their wizard level + Int mod
Then every level thereafter they can learn 2 more spells of a level they can cast
Gotcha. My DM started a 1 shot and wanted us to make them level 5.
I'm new so I'm still picking up on this lol
Thank you tbough
DDB lets you “learn” more than that since wizards can learn more spells via scribing between level ups. At level 5 a base wizard will know 14 spells (not including cantrips)
Since you’re starting at level 5 learn might want to ask if you can add a few extra to represent you using their scribe feature before the campaign starts
No
We'll start the campaign in about a month
Gotcha. I did choose the sage background too. I'll ask to make sure
Hi! I'm just wondering, which stats directly like combat each other? I understand dexterity (specifically stealth) combats wisdom but I'm wondering what the others combat (idk if thats even the right word)
What do you know about the campaign so far? Do you know the setting, premise, themes, and tone of the adventure yet?
Hi! I am just wondering what kinda backstory would would work for a tabaxi fighter, and her background is a haunted one
Stats aren't what are contested, it's certain skills. When the book doesn't have a rule about a type of contested skill check, the DM determines what needs to be rolled.
Each case is always a little different.
For example, when someone tries to grapple someone, the person performing the grapple makes an Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target’s Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/phb-2014/combat#Grappling
With stealth checks specifically, a character would make stealth check and the DC for that is the passive perception of the person they are trying to hide from.
You can learn more about how stealth works by checking out this video by the animated spellbook: https://youtu.be/XgUEm6_yXCs
Is the character already a part of a campaign?
Yes
What do you know about the campaign so far? Do you know the setting, premise, themes, and tone of the adventure yet?
It's mostly just through montains and small towns
ohhhh that makes more sense, thanks
When making a backstory I recommend using the campaign's setting, premise, and tone as the ground work to build a backstory that compliments the campaign.
For example, let's say that a campaign adventure is about protecting a young prince, who is the soon to be future king. For that campaign, a backstory that explains how a character became a knight is going to be integral and easier for a DM to incorporate into the campaign.
Ok thank you so much that really helps
No nothing
Happy to help
I also have some videos by Ginny Di you can check out that can help.
The first covers common pitfalls players can fall when coming up with a basckstory: https://youtu.be/S1YW7oUzs0s
The second focuses on guidelines you can use for character goals for proactive roleplayind: https://youtu.be/DXUnEk4cuYI?si=WSZSR2BII3jwsvED
The third is about Ginny re-creating her character using the insights she's gain over the years as a player and GM: https://youtu.be/QnFStvEOVcA?si=P-I33-AV5oZSi-t3
When you can ask your DM try to learn what you can about the campaign and use that as a basis for creating your character's backstory.
Okay
The answers I gave to JJ up above can also help.
Ic
I can make the call to adventure related to the campaign when I know but I want to have a basis at least
just made a character on D&D beyond to thew best of my ability, completely new to this whole thing, what else should i do next. Really intrigued in all of this and just want to make sure i do things by the books
Exactly
Ideally a backstory should answer these questions.
- Why is the character actively pursuing the adventure hook?
- Why do they need to team up with the party?
- Why does the party need them?
You can share the character in #character-discussion if you'd like feedback on the character to make sure you didn't miss anything when building your character.
If you haven't already you can check out this 3 minute video by One Shot Questers.

awesome, thank you so much
How do i do combat and actions? This game really confuses me
The reference sheet that I linked in the message above breaks down and explains combat.
Got it thanks alot
Anyone able to give some advice on a minmax level 5 build for a one shot?
#optimization would be a better place to ask.

Don't worry too much because i know a few people who jump in without fully reading the rules and understanding the game.
But the problem is, you won't have a good understanding of D&D until you either jump into a game and have a bunch of stalls from not knowing the rules or you start reading the rules and googling the questions you do have as most of the time the websites will cite you right back to an official book where you can learn not only the rulings but where to find them.
Try listening to these dnd podcast:https://www.jointhepartypod.com/listen/beginners-start-here-wedding-party-i
It's a recorded game session but what makes this unique, is that whenever the cast uses a new mechanic, they take a moment to explain what the mechanic is and how it works.
Oh ok
Yep, it's been edited specifically for D&D beginners.
Then you'll want to share that at #homebrew
If you're new to dnd, it is recommend that you hold off on homebrew until you have a decent understanding of the rules and mechanics of dnd.
Yes please
No piracy is all. So there are certain sites that share "the books for free" and material from them for free. Can't list names or flagged, but just remember if its d&d official related only post beyond links.
Main reason why homebrew is not recommended for newcomers is because it can have unintended consequences when you have it work with the core mechanics.
It's like building an engine part and trying to install it before taking the time to understand how an engine works.
But if you have no frame of reference, how do you know something is balanced? 😅
A budget friendly approach is to check out books from you local library and input the info manually.
The free Basic Rules has everything you need to get started. If you join a group the DM typically can share their physical/digital books with you.
I'm already about to turn in for the day.
In the meantime feel free to ask others for feedback and reach out to DMs in their looking for players posts.
Things you can do to improve your chances:
- Use HammerTime to showcase your availability: https://hammertime.cyou/
- The tool displays a time stamp in viewers own timezone.
- This avoid any confusion regarding Time Zone
- Ask the Game Master what makes the game fun for them.
- Show that their fun also matters and that they are not just there to entertain the group.
- Mention what aspects of the campaign you find interesting.
- Anything that highlights that you took time to read the game ad goes a long way.

Yeah, something like that
Not sure when tho, but some sneak peaks have been released or something
In September of this year, they will be releasing an updated version of the Player’s Handbook, which is meant to act as a replacement to the original one. New versions of The Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual will be released later as well.
Officially, these updated rule books are still considered to be “5e” and we differentiate them by referring to the release date of the books. There is the 2014 Players Handbook or the 2024 Players Handbook
so that's not 5.5e
cus i got confused, somepeople say 5.5e will be released this year
Yeah some people are using that as a shorthand, but it’s not accurate
The change between the 2014 5e rules and the 2024 5e rules are no where near as large as the changes between 3e and 3.5e.
ooh thanks god
I almost thought it was a bad time to start playing.
was playing in westmarch setting
so it'll be very long term
wont be fun if the rule drastically change when playing
The biggest thing that’s changing with the rules update is the player options. The classes and subclasses will get new features and abilities. The actual core rules of how the game is played are 95% the same
Do you think hex-voker builds will be greatly affected?
If any you are free, could you help me create a character via vc
well this build will combine magic missiles and hexes obtained from 1 lvl dips to warlock.
good morning, could someone please help me understand how skill checks check
like if you do a stealth check how does it work with your stealth
Honestly I kinda want to play DnD but don't have friends to play with

Now you have a friend 🤝
Wanna try find a new game?
Sure
You tell the DM what your character wants to do. The DM decides what checks are needed and tells you what to roll. For a stealth check the DM will ask you to roll it and you would roll a d20 and add your stealth skill modifier plus any other bonuses. This would be your stealth check and the DM would use that info to decide what happens.
Also note that organizing or soliciting games outside of the LFG channels is off-topic and will be moderated.
But if you are looking for a game /group to join, take a look at the posts in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community

I checked that tho
I'm just super confused
Nvm found it
Oh my two braincells are already suffering
Welcome to d&d lol
Don’t think you have to memorize the rules or know it all. Start with learning how to create a character.
Just take it slow and feel free to ask specific questions here as they come up
How does one exactly find a DnD campaign
My 2 braincells 😭😭😭
Yeah but start by making a character I used the d&d Beyond app for it so you should try that
Check #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community and your local game/book stores
I tried
(can't FREAKIMG SIGN IN)
Lol I just used my google account
I'm sorry for you
It just says login error please sign into a Google account on your device settings and try again
Try reinstalling the app
Already did, twice.
Hmmm
Hey y'all, anyone know a good place to learn the basics for someone who knows nothing about DND but wants to learn?
Then when I do what it says, it says I already am signed in on that email
I can send you a copy of the character sheets so you cud make one if you want.
What about the oh-so tedious math
Hmmm idk Just wanted to help
The app do be broken asf lmao
Lol
It's so shit can't even sign in
I don't think I've ever been so confused before 😭
ive been a player for a few oneshots but ive been interested in being a dm for a few premade oneshots
what is the time investment for a sesssion?
Is DND really like somewhat an RP? Like, I'm trying to find rules for when you're actually PLAYING but all I can find is skill checks and save something's whatever they're called
I'm so confused I'm sorry for asking dumb questions 😭
Yes RP is a part of the game you just act as your character
How can we add character in the game?
You find a game #find-a-game and then created a character to play in the DMs campaign
Dnd isn’t like an MMO where you drop into a game there is a bit of prep work to do before you start
ohh okokk
I am trying my best to learn about it but failing in some little things every time
Basically for RP say you are talking to a guard to gain access to a town, you could RP you persuading them to let you in depending on what you say the DM may ask for a persuasion check or if you RP really well they may not even ask
I'm a newbie DM
I'm thinking of making an ethical litch in my dnd campaign
Long story short
He lives in a village and asks people if they are willing to sell their body after their death and the money goes to their family and if they body is damaged beyond repair he will return their ashes to the family
How many gold pieces should he pay them?
Folks report good success with Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragon of Icespire Peak, and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. The last in particular does a better job than the others in assisting the new DM. You could also run modules designed as one-shots (but you don’t have to finish them in one session). There are several newb-friendly adventures in this vein, if you want suggestions.
I have arrived, I’m new I have no idea was going on but I just need basics. If that’s ok C:

You may want to look at #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community and see if anyone is open to spectators. #looking-for-community might be the best because you could potentially join a westmarches server which often have many games running.
YouTube and Twitch both have D&D games on them. Twitch has a dedicated category, in fact: https://www.twitch.tv/directory/category/dungeons-and-dragons

Does anyone do like online sessions here? I wanna play like, a 40k space marine (normal barbarian normal stats, just a spooky cool looking dude with armor that technically does nothing) and I've also got a monster hunter homebrew book that's pretty cool
Hello all, I have played a few campaigns with a character I made from DnD Beyond, however I have acquired a few books from a garage sale and was wondering if any you kind people would help walk me through making a character on paper, rather than DnD Beyond (So I dont have to buy a book online I already have physically) Thanks in advanced!
Hello everyone i am new to this.
I intend to start a campaign with my friends and i decided to be the DM.
What is the fastest way to go through the basics ?
Do i need to read the entirety of the 3 manuals so i could start to develop a campaign?
Just read as you go gang. Being a DM takes experience. You can't hit it all at once.
Just wanted to make sure i play by the book.
Ive heard players are really hardcore when it comes to this game and i dont want to ruin the fun
You won't ruin the fun
As long as you make it fun you'll be fine.
Don't stress.
so I see there are a lot of new people joining constantly
not being the only one does make me feel a little better 😄
There's lots of new people joining the hobby every day. Great time to start learning!
FYI you might want to change your user name to use normal txt, it’s a server rule
Hey i wanted to play dnd with my friends for the first time. Sadly it‘s really confusing and i wanted to ask someone who could maybe explain everything because we don’t get anything
Just dm if someone wants to help

hi im new to dnd
Check out those links above
Hello all, I have played a few campaigns with a character I made from DnD Beyond, however I have acquired a few books from a garage sale and was wondering if any you kind people would help walk me through making a character on paper, rather than DnD Beyond (So I dont have to buy a book online I already have physically) Thanks in advanced!
You might try #character-discussion since it sounds like you're not really a newcomer
I assume you bought the Player's Handbook? If so, read the first four chapters on character creation
Thanks, yeah i bought the players handbook and tashas cauldron of everything
should I get the player hand book. I haven't played a campaign yet
The Basic Rules are free. It has everything you need to get started. You don't need to buy any books to start.
hellow
Physical dnd books are going to have their MSRP printed on the back.
So when buying any used books, use the printed prices as your guide.
Also depending on the books, you can buy them new at a discounted price at retail and online stores.
hi new to dnd as in want to play but i need to know if the DM needs to make notes for the 5E campaign books or if the campaigns have more than enough information to make a playthrough
Hey, what things should I do before trying to join campaigns? Also is there anything I should know when joining campaigns? 😭
I mean try to find ones that are just starting
if u get a chance to join one that’s mid way through the main quest it’s real confusing n no fun
I played bg3 and watched quite a bit of dnd just stuggled to find a way to join xD thanks. Do people accept newbies? Never played before
What kind of notes are you imagining a DM might need to make?
certain additions like extra encounters, information and content of dungeons i ask because our dm had created notes when he DM'ed for pathfinder
Adventure books provide a good baseline, but the DM will almost certainly need to add/delete/revise because the module only accounts for so much. It doesn't presume to account for all possibilities, nor does it tailor the game to the specific party.
And even trying to stick close to the book, a given DM will probbaly make notes for themselves for easier reference rather than searching the book for relevant info.
ok thank you
There are third party adventures on sites like DMsGuild. Not every adventure needs to be a hardcover campaign
what would be a good dnd module to buy
or most fun
im playing with people who have played but in very different ways so a begninner module would not be the best but i kinda need guidance
Curse of Strahd is NOT something I would recommend to new DMs
Whats a half feat

Hello everyone! I created a character with a character sheet and all but I don't know how to play them in combat/out of combat. Could somone look at me character sheet and explain how my combat would look?
Sure, did you build it on dnd beyond?
I'm not sure I just used a site that showed spells for the class and added it to a seperate character sheet. may I send it to you?
We generally recommend sharing character sheets on the server so people can get the most feedback.
To make this process easier, why don't you tell me your chosen race and class and I can share with you a premade character you can use for comparison.
Wanting to get into DnD but before I join a local group irl. I kind of want a little knowledge, do I get to tell the DM what type of race & class I want to be? For example I want to be a halving & i want to specialize using a whip as my main hand. What type of class am I looking at? 100% new so any input is greatly appreciated
Is it a learn-to-play game or just a jump in and get going?
sometimes you get to bring what you want to a game, sometimes a DM might have certain species or class restrictions. Halflings are generally accepted at tables.. A whip is a martial melee weapon so you'd want to look more to a fighter or barbarian, paladins - classes who start with proficiency with martial weapons.. why the whip?
https://imgur.com/a/qxeEsjw Here you go
Is there a reason you made a level 11 character?
Yes I am joining a campaign halfway through
A whip is just my favorite weapon of choice for almost any mmorpg type game I play so I figured I’d want to stick with the whip. I was scheming a halfling rouge that has like a magical vine or thorn whip not for superb damage but maybe like some tricky bleed effect or a snare. I truly have no idea what is and isn’t allowed just trying to get creative without becoming impossible
What are the guidelines that the DM asked of you?
Knowing that help for better context.
How do you mean
- Does the DM ask for standard array, point buy, or rolled stats?
- Are you allowed to start with magic items? If so what is the rarity limit?
- What source books are players allowed to use for character creation?
We rolled my stats, I have vorpal so yes magic items allowed. All books as far as I'm aware
Your DM approved a legendary magic item?
We should move this to #character-discussion at this point.
Yes he allowed the sword but it will only work on draconic because there is an upcoming dragon war we will be participating in
Before we move this to #character-discussion Are you new to dnd?
Yes
If you're new to dnd, I would recommend choosing a simpler class since you're starting at such a high level.
Particularly something that is simple to use but effective.
I will be using this character
All right, just understand that it may become overwhelming as you try to figure out what abilities to use and how they work.
I'm aware that's why I'm asking what my combat would look like. Like explain a combo to me
Is titles/alias allowed for npcs to call me like in mine the two iv put in is the handsome hunter and the kingpin slayer cause both involve stuff in my backstory is that ok would those be considered a sort of feat and wat is exactly a feat
Also where would I Dhar my character sheet
Share
#character-discussion if you just want general feedback. Or #optimization if you want feedback on how strong the character is.
Feats are special abilities that your character can pick up at certain levels. The cost is that you're turning down the opportunity to turn down your ability scores.
The use of those titles is probably something you’d want to discuss with your DM.
Ultimately the DM controls everyone else in your game world, so whether any of them use those titles depends solely on the DM.
Ok even if nobody uses them could I still them in my back story
Because I really don’t feel like rewriting my backstory

I don't really know where to ask this, but how similar is baulder's gate 3 to 5e?
I'm thinking of playing the former to play fun builds and stuff from 5e

There are some similaries but specifically bg3 made some changes to 5e to translate better for a video game.
I am looking to do the reverse
but maybe this isn't the place because this is a dnd server not a bg3 server lol
This can be moved to #dnd-discussion for bg3
There is also #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
Though the main ones is that you can't level up past level 11 or 12 in the game so keep that in mind.
Can’t wait to get started my wife daughter and I will be starting as soon as I finish reading the rule book I got with the essentials kit we are all newbie’s any tips would be greatly appreciate
Hey a question about Paladin's Holy Symbol.
How do you embed them into shields or wear them?
Do you need to go to an armor smith to have them fitted into shields and rings/necklaces?

They're painted/inscribed on the shield. Don't overthink it.
And the different types of holy symbols are just for role playing purposes right?
they are all the same.
Mechanically they're the same. Narratively they're different.
yeah I was definetly overthinking this. I am deep into the rabbit hole.
Gotcha Thanks
Thanks looks like a ton of info
Hi I'm new to the game and I don't have clear a thing about character building, who decides what my character can do at the beginning? Do I give him some abilities or does the Dm decide everything? Thanks in advance
I recommend you read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
