My characters story is kinda like the guy from baldars, I need to need to get it
Are you looking for a group to join to play D&D?
Also note that Baldurs Gate 3, while based off D&D, does a few things differently for video game purposes.
Get!
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Yes*
I’ve really been wanting to get baldars, just having trouble getting commissioned
We have some LFG channels - make sure to read #find-a-game carefully as it has important info and instructions on how to use the channels.
I'd recommend checking out games posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community (that's D&D community servers and they can have a variety of different types of D&D games)

Welcome!
Hi my name is Vincent! Im new and here’s my character, he’s an elf who was bit by a vampire
He’s got black hair, a purple cloak and I gotta do a bit modifying to the costume I might work on
Nice! If you want feedback on it I’d see about sharing the sheet to #character-discussion !
Hello there! I go by star and I'm new to dnd.

I am reading it slowly but I much prefer asking people
Well by asking people, they're just going to tell you what the rules say
So it's just reading the rules with extra steps
I second the rules reading suggestion. If knowing now would help then leveling up is done through the XP or milestone system, both ultimately controlled by the DM
XP: Killing monsters, doing quests, etc grants XP, once you get enough you level up.
Milestone: The DM decides an appropriate moment to grant a level up, such as before/after fighting a boss or completing a story event.
Ohh okay!!
I just read something about a hit die but can't wrap my head around it, please help
Hit Dice are used to regain HP during short rests. When you take a short rest, you can roll any unexpended hit dice and add your constitution modifier to it and regain that much HP. The Hit Dice are then "expended". You get half of your total Hit Dice back after long resting
I see, so what about the part where each race uses a different die or something like that
Each class has a different sized die, representing how hardy they are.
The class determines the hit die
Because that's how the math works for converting from ability score to ability modifier
It's so that a number between 3 and 18 can be converted to a reasonable bonus to a dice roll
(3 to 18 is the range of results when adding up three six-sided dice)
hi so im starting a campaign with my friends, and we're all just beginners looking to have fun. im a tiefling sorcerer and i was wondering what some typical cantrips and spells people go for are? the list of spells is so long its kind of overwhelming haha. my teammates are a dwarf monk and a dwarf paladin
If you’d like help building your character and choosing your spells, #character-discussion or #optimization would be the best channels to ask for help in
I hope they have a trench coat
oh i see, ty!
I have too many questions. Does the dm tell you how much gp you have at the start orrr
Your starting gold is actually something determined by the normal character creation rules
Your starting weapons, armor, and equipment are also determined at character creation, based on which class you play
thank you
..how to calculate AC? I see it's 10 + dexternity modifier but then there's some features and spells that make it different or something
That’s your AC if you don’t wear armor and don’t have a feature that changes your unarmored AC (i.e. Monk and Barbarian)
Generally, each armor type says how to calculate your AC while wearing it
You might get additional AC bonuses from other sources like holding a shield (+2 bonus), having a magic ring of protection (+1 bonus), or having the defense fighting style (+1 bonus)
Since you’re level 1, don’t worry about the magic item bonuses since you wouldn’t normally start with magic items
Alright! Speaking of levels, you need xp to level up, but is there a given amount of xp you have to reach to gain a leveů?
level?*
The type of armor that you wear determines how your AC is calculated. Each one has its own formula.
There are some class features that also give you alternative ways to calculate your AC. You can only pick 1 method at a time though. You cannot stack features like that together
?tag new levelup
Gaining a Level
Typically, a character starts at 1st level and advances in level by adventuring. Gaining a level improves your attributes, can unlock new class features or new spells, and generally increases your might as an adventurer.
There are two common ways to determine when you gain a level, and your DM will let you know which is used in your campaign.
- Experience Points. In these campaigns, experience points (XP) fuel level advancement and are most often the reward for completing combat encounters. When your total XP reaches certain thresholds, you gain a level.
- Milestone. These campaigns let the story drive advancement, awarding levels when adventurers accomplish significant goals in the campaign. Many official adventures use this method.
A character can grow to a maximum of 20th level. Your DM might have you begin at a higher level, or might end the campaign at a lower one. Some games continue past 20th level with the use Epic Boons.
If your DM uses the XP method of leveling up, then yes there is. The link above shows how much XP is needed to to reach each level
Oh okay I think I'll go for milestone. Seems easier
Your DM should inform you which method they use. Most DM’s in my experience use milestone anyway
That's the thing. I am supposed to be a dm. It's both mine and their first game and I sacrificed myself
Then yeah, if you want to keep it simple, milestone is the way to go.
thank you!!
Which books should i get to have all the classes etc covered? (Got the core 3)
Would it be
Xanathars and tashas?
Tasha's is the only book with a new class: the artificer.
But both Xanathar's and Tasha's have subclasses aplenty.
Aight thank you. Yeah subclasses are important as well.
hey, kinda new to dnd, haven't really played any games but I follow one or two podcast so I sorta understand the basics, it always seemed really fun and I would like some help to find a game ig, if anyone can give me info about that, that would be sick

welp, i dont have enough friends and my communication skills are not good anough so no complex rules and dm
but thx
If you’re trying to find a campaign these Iamrazorwing made a guide here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
Key thing is for players, the best approach is to proactively search for a campaign group as there are more players than DMs.
thats common sense imo
where do I write down stuff like having proficiencies with longswords etc?
Bottom left section of the character sheet under Tools and Proficiencies.
explain me hitpoints quickly please
Basically your health set by your con score and hit dice
At lvl on you have max hit die + con mod so a wizard with 14con (+2) would have 8hp
how do i find a DM in my area?
IRL or online
also does anyone have any idea if i should buy the starter pack ?
irl
i have no idea how to play and only understand in theory not practice
can someone vc quickly and help me out?? I'm helping people create characters and I suck

Until then, we're providing you all the necessary tools to understand how to go through the character creation steps yourself
They literally show you how to make a character or just use the help tips option on beyond or you can get the app to generate character for you based on a few options
they dont show the classes i need
Thats all in the players handbook
What class?
Because lets be honnest for a second,do you really think someone is gonna take 4 hours out of their day to teach you 1 on 1?
Like ya gotta be autonomous in the dnd hobby or else youll get stuck,a lot
And im sure that if we recommend you the right youtube videos itll me like second nature in no time!
Sorcerer/bard/warlocks all have the exact same stat distribution
https://youtu.be/CeIJKkpDvBY?si=3e8hTqbaL_vXl4Mx sorcerer build video
I know, can you not ping me please you are rude and I’m trying to help
I am in no way rude,im literally helping
You are being rude by just being generally insulting to me right now
I just stated that all 3 classes use the exact same stats
Lets say that each spellcaster prioritizes a stat
im showing this to 2 people while trying to understand it myself im losing sanity
Ooof, maybe try to learn it by yourself, and help those people later?
Itd work better if you have a general idea of what things are before trying to explain them
we are learning together kinda
i might be able to help! if you're still down to vc?
have made quite a few characters with those classes before :)
yes please!!

Hey, how do I get perms for #looking-for-dm
The instructions for how to use those channels are in #find-a-game
I posted in there once a couple months ago
The Find a Game channel is just a list of instructions. You do not make posts there
In that channel, it explains that you have to use the server bot to fill out a form, and then the bot will generate a post for you in #looking-for-dm based on your answers to that form
does anyone want to do a call and give me some tips and tricks. That sounds more fun than watching vedeos ?
Of course. That’s what we’re here for
Multiclassing is an optional rule and you'd need to be above level 1 and have the prerequisites met to do it
Multiclassing is the process of taking a level in a new class instead of taking a level in your original class as you level up. So it’s only possible to do so from level 2 onwards, since you can’t have a level in two different classes at level 1
ohhhh
Also mutliclassing can make things more complicated so we'd generally suggest new players avoid it at least at first.
Agreed
thanks for the help, i'm gonna try and make a character now
So quick question, I've already made a character and all that but I'm new and I don't know what all the dice mean
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
The d20 is your general "do stuff" dice. The others are typically for damage and healing.
I was talking to someone earlier today who knew a little bit more and I know the pyramid. I know the d20 and all that. Do any of the dice do with the d20 does or anything like that?
What do you mean?
Ability checks, saving throws, and attack rolls use a d20.
oh, another question actually, whats the general consensus on rolling dice to to determine a characters stats?
Every game feature will tell you what dice to roll and how many. The dice don’t “do” anything specifically. You just have to read your abilities to know what to roll
That's a d10 - roll two of them, one taking the 10's place and the other the single digit place and rolled together you can mimic a d100 or percentile dice to get a range between 1-100.
There's no consensus. If you don't have a DM, don't roll. They may not use rolling as a method, and they probably won't accept rolls they didn't witness.
Hello 👋
the one that goes from 00-90 is the percentile dice, the 12 sided dice goes from1-12
So here's another question. How many dice should I start with?
A set of dice (including a d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20) should be enough!
Or a digital app if allowed.
oh no, now that i'm looking at buyable dice online my brains going all wild about it
I'd recommend holding off on making any big purchases until you've tried the game and are sure you like it. Otherwise, a single set is relatively inexpensive.
👍
Or try to make your own dice!
Try to make a full on diy dnd set bcz why not?
Or try to combine dice, like a d10 and a d6 or a d4
And why not all three for a d20
Im joking now
okay, so i plan on making a warlock character, can someone experienced just sit in a call with me and walk me through that and kinda tell me what would probably be best
Mostly its not about "the best" even tho sometimes it is. You just need to have fun building your character and using it
But thats my perception
ha, perception, i get it
anyways i have no experience writing stories so i would have no clue what would be good and what would be terrible, i just want some help crafting the thing that would be good for me
Even tho i am "kinda" new i do know important things about dnd
The story imo rarely affects the gameplay. well unless you were doing some bad shit and everyone wants to kill you
Well besides merchants cuz they be chillin
i mean yeah but backstories important, like there has to be a reason this character joins the party or why this character does what they do
If you put it like that yeah. Some people just join for the heck of it. Never played nor never seen an actual campaign, ive seen just some fun things in my yt shorts
i mean so did i, i just need someone who's played atleast a few sessions of dnd to help me in my adventure of building a warlock

thank you. i hope to have fun here
Please redirect me if I’m asking this in the wrong place. But me and my friends are doing a one shot and none of us have experience of DnD beyond watching stuff (except the DM but they’re unsure on this question) and I just wanted some advice on which is the best online character creator for beginners? I see there are so many out there and some are very different to others so I’m just unsure what’s best
Dnd beyond is recommended because it automates the process and has a beginner tutorial in character creation that explains character creation.
You can also jump in with a premade character and get started right away https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
I recommend D&DBeyond since it's the offical toolkit for 5e, and it integrates the basic rules very nicely
Thank you so much both @wheat crystal @true musk
Does a flat damage reduction get applied before or after calculating a resistance?
#dnd-rules Should have the answer.
How do I play I just made a character
I know how to play DnD but not online, should I still ask here?
Ask your question, and folks can redirect you if there's a better channel!
Do most games hosted here use Roll20? If so I'll make an account for it
Most? No. It is a popular platform, though, and you don't have anything to lose since there's a free tier.
You'd recommend making one then?
Sure.
When it asks for my first and last name-is ok to use a fake one? Does it show first+last publically? Sorry if I sound paranoid
Roll20 has been out the longest, so it has a decent amount of the community out there. However there are more Virtual Tabletops available.
A few out there:
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Foundry
- Alchemy RPG
- Fantasy Grounds
- Maps by Dndbeyond
These are some VTTs that are getting the most attention currently.
I've used aliases, but I don't believe it shows first and last publicly.
Are games here usually voice or text?
?tag new online
so games here are voice? I think that's what I got from the guide
Many games use voice but there are text-only games as well (often referred to as Play By Post).
The original D&D game was designed around 1 DM and 3-6 players playing at the same table (thus the tabletop RPG term)
ah ok, that's in the "how does your group play" section?
Yeah - your DM and group will determine the way they'll play and what tools, platforms, and services they'll use (or not use)
is there anyone who knows how to play D&D on tabletop simulator? i just bought it and i have no clue on what im doing
Probably have better luck checking on TTS's channels for folks that play D&D there...
Anyway that topic would be best suited for #third-party
what are some good faiths for warlocks
I’m doing my best to create a good Barbarian Goblin character but I needa find a campaign to play it in
Ask your DM what setting their campaign takes place in
Any faith that’s possible in your DM’s world. You could dedicate yourself to a certain diety, or perhaps a philosophy or universal concept
Check with your DM and group as the setting may help you decide on something that works well for that.
Also note having a faith in a deity is not required in D&D
You can have a cleric or paladin who don't worship any deity
not in a campaign at the moment, just trying to make a base character that once i find a campaign i can adjust slightly to go well with the campaign
Same here
Then pick something that sounds interesting to you - and be prepared to adjust things once you have a game/group to play in.
Soooooooooo....... Do I start off by creating a character or finding a game?
Creating a character can be great practice, but most often you’ll create or heavily modify a character for a campaign
Oneshots tend to be more accepting of premade characters
Oneshots as in Glass Cannons? Or is that a different term?
A oneshot is a single short story, typically intended for completion in a single session
For example, I recently ran a oneshot where the players broke into a prison, got some information from a prisoner, then left. We played for a little under 4 hours, which is on the shorter side for a oneshot
Interesting
4 hours is about perfect for a one-shot imo. Though they can easily range from 1 hour to 8+ depending on the group
Ah I see

How much should i read up on in the rules books both the dm manual and players guide before i join a game?
The basic rules cover most of what you need. As a player it’s pretty helpful to make sure you’ve got character creation right, as well as the combat rules and how to do skill checks
Ok ok thank you🙏
Hey guys! i’m very new to the dnd community and im looking for a group to do a campaign with! i have little to no experience and will honestly probably need help with some stuff but im willing to learn and I want to get started with somebody!
Within the Basic Rules you only really need to know the rules for your specific character. While I'd personally recommend reading them all so you have all the options to choose from, if you find the race, class, or background that fits what you want to make, you don't really need to read any further in that chapter
e.g, if you decide you want to play a Bard, you dont need to read any other class, really

Because i dont have a group yet should i make a couple characters in case i use content that the dm doesnt allow or isnt using ie warlock patrons from xanthers
Being allowed to use Xanathar's is usually a pretty safe bet so you shouldn't worry about that too much. Making several characters to refine your knowledge of the process certainly wouldn't hurt though, practice makes perfect
Personally, I recommend character concepts over fully built characters.
Mhmm for sure, making several concepts and picking the one you like the most is an excellent method for any creative work, TTRPG characters included
I have a question I am trying to figure out what race I should for my character the ones that I am really interested are Aarakocra Elemental Evil Player's Companion Half-Elf
Basic Rules / Player’s Handbook Tiefling
Basic Rules / Player’s Handbook thoughts?
Why not just make three characters, one of each race?
Not to say you need to learn three different classes. You can keep the class the same, but maybe you find you like the features of one race more. Or you start figuring out a backstory and find that one iteration of the character comes more easily to you.
True but which one ? What if I had to choose one
I’m saying the process of making the character using each race could help you choose.
You’re right on that and I had read the descriptions
Yep it is sure hard
I like Aarakocra because their birds and I think they’re interesting. However, the one thing that’s drawing me back is their flying speed. Which is 50 For half elf there’s a lot of things I could say I really like they are Walking in two worlds but truly belonging to neither, half-elves combine what some say are the best qualities of their elf and human parents: human curiosity, inventiveness, and ambition tempered by the refined senses, love of nature, and artistic tastes of the elves and unable to fit into either society, choose lives of solitary wandering or join with other misfits and outcasts in the adventuring life. Which I think it makes it so compelling. Another thing too is. EXCELLENT AMBASSADORS
Many half-elves learn at an early age to get along with everyone, defusing hostility and finding common ground. As a race, they have elven grace without elven aloofness and human energy without human boorishness. They often make excellent ambassadors and go-betweens (except between elves and humans, since each side suspects the half-elf of favoring the other). For Tiefling I think they are unique and interesting and there’s something about them that makes them so compelling. As a player option. Number one is To be greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the lot of the tiefling. And to twist the knife, tieflings know that this is because a pact struck generations ago infused the essence of Asmodeus — overlord of the Nine Hells — into their bloodline. Their appearance and their nature are not their fault but the result of an ancient sin, for which they and their children and their children’s children will always be held accountable.
Number two is Tieflings are derived from human bloodlines, and in the broadest possible sense, they still look human. However, their infernal heritage and honestly honestly, I think they’re so flavorful for Tiefling
#character-discussion could probably weigh in. You could also do some digging on YouTube and the Forgotten Realms wiki to learn more on each race, see if the lore stands out to you. I agree tieflings are pretty flavorful, which partly accounts for their popularity.

I am a bigginer and I have very little experience but I know the basic rules I'm looking for a campaign or a party to join and I am very open to learning
The bot post above and my message below that have you covered.
I’m new as well and I’m want to join a campaign quick because it’s the summer and I’m bored and am very interested in dnd
does anyone know how allowed the Blood Hunter class is? like is it likely to be shot down/not allowed
Idk I couldn’t find it on the class thing In the game setup
Because ima blood hunter
It’s homebrew, so ask your DM but probably no
😦
You’re generally expected to have read the Basic Rules prior to joining a campaign, but you can check out the instructions in #find-a-game
The bot post above and my messages go over the basics of dnd and how to find a group.
Just keep in mind that it takes time to find the group in the same way of any social activity.
One reason is because it takes time and work for a Dungeon Master to prepare an adventure.
Hello newcomer here
Hey guys, new to DnD here.
What roles do you suggest are the easiest to play as a beginner for learning?
All classes are easily playable! Spellcasters take a little bit of extra work to learn, but it’s not impossible. Here’s a list of my personal suggestions.
- Fighter - Pretty simple, great choice for a beginner.
- Paladin - Really fun, gives you a nice alternative if you can’t decide what spells to cast, great for beginners.
- Cleric - Commonly considered the easiest spellcasting class, great for beginners.
- Rogue - Nice edgy flavor, pretty easy to keep track of for beginners.
What if i want to druid and rogue at same time
uh wassup im new, i came from tales from the stinky dragon and i just wanna know how dnd works and play, but if i can't play at least know how it works
The only class I advise beginners to stay away from is Warlocks, because their spellcasting works different and a few bad choices can lead to you feeling unsatisfied and bored
Multiclassing is not recommended for new players because it requires you to learn both classes and can easily lead to building a character that isn't good at either things each class excels at.
Oh thanks so you were saying i should just pick one class
Thanks Sam, I was very interested in Paladin while I was reading up on the handbook.
Do I need to know everything about Paladins to effectively play a DnD campaign?
Or rather - what am I expected to know and learn before I can join a game?
Yes, stick with one class for your first time playing.

This is my recommendation to all beginners:
I suggest you read the Basic Rules, or at least Chapter 1, the relevant parts of Chapters 2 and 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 7, and Chapter 9.
And another thing how it people get stat point
Thank you Good Sir

Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Pre made should make things easier.
Standard array or point point buy is recommended because they are both consistent and reliable methods for establishing your character stats.
hmmm okay and i want someone to review my character sheet where i can send

Question I made my first character on DnD beyond is it viable for use?
dndbeyond is a common place people make their characters.
Whether or not it was built correctly, would be another matter.
In which case set the character sheet to public and share the character url #character-discussion if you'd like some feedback on it.
the link
be sure to set the sheet from 'private' to 'public' so the link works for others
Posted it
hey uh, is it true you can have a complete dnd game with just the module, mb some character sheets and a notebook?
Hello, was reading the rule book - it only mentioned the starting gold for 4 classes.
As a paladin, what's gonna be the starting gold?
If a class gets starting gold, it is stated in its starting equipment
Otherwise, you’re reliant on your background for starting gold
okay thank you
so a baker for instance as a background will have about 60 gp as his savings since a skilled artisan can make 1gp a day.
am I on the right track?
Backgrounds will state starting gold, if any, in their starting equipment section
I’m not seeing a baker background
okay thank you, I will read more into it
The Guild Artisan background, if that’s what you mean, starts with 15 gp
oh sorry, I didnt see the background section
What was y’all’s way of getting into D&D, or any advice to help this be less intimidating?
dnd podcasts are a great way of learning the flow of the game or like the basics, doesnt even have to be like a tutorial or anything, literally just any podcast throw on an episode and youll get an idea pretty quickly of what theyre doing
and theres also the obvious answer of things like baldurs gate ofc
Honestly the only podcast I’ve enjoyed has been Dungeons and Daddies which I think is fair to say isn’t the best intro lol, I’ve been meaning to check out Critical Role though, I hear they’re also pretty good
my friend hosted a dnd session for their birthday and I poured over rules, classes and spells for 2 days straight
you can't get around learning the basic rules
That’s what I’m learning so far is the basics, like understanding modifiers (like -1 in charisma checks), how initiative works etc. I might need to watch a video explaining the initiative so I understand it better tho, same with spell casting
critical role in my opinion is a very deep dive into dnd some podcasts that are a little less hardcore would be like just roll with it, jocat's heart of elynthi, etc
Honestly? Look for random streams on YouTube and Twitch. Stuff with 500< viewers. That'll get you the best insight into what D&D really plays like
but on that note jocats crap guide to dnd is very good
I’ll check that out, I learn way better from visual/audio than I do from reading
initiative is just a dexterity ability check
however there are certain bonuses that can add to an initative ability check (for example, the alert feat allows you to add +5)
yeah, you add your dex modifier and any other applicable bonuses
Ohhh okay
but unlike an ability check there's no "difficulty" (DC) number to overcome, it's just whoever's higher goes first
Yes that I knew, and natural 20’s supersede ones achieved by bonuses correct? Like a nat 20 beats a 19+1
no
No? They don’t go before?
for ability checks and saving throws, nat 20s are just numbers
only when rolling to attack is a nat 20 a guranteed hit
Ohh okay
that's what the rules strictly say, but certain tables will treat nat 20s as a guranteed success no matter what you're rolling for
it never hurts to ask the dm before play
that's what session 0 is for, to clear up stuff like those expectations
Good to know; I’ll keep that in mind
the handbooker helper series on yt is helpful, check it out if you need it
hi everyone i am gardergnome i am kinda new to D&D i use to play with some coworkers of mine when i say i use to play i did 2 nights of playing so about 8 hours total

For all the new people Im sure you have questions; ask away
Hii I'm a fairly new DND player, and I wanna try joining a game, how do I do that? I'm still confused on the "find a game" channel TT
have you read the instructions in #find-a-game (carefully)?
Hello!! its been a really long time since I've dipped my toes into the world of D&D. I Need some help freshening up on stuff. If someone can private call that would be preferable.
Why not just ask your questions
Voice chat is a very big ask and borders on inappropriate
Just saying hi :3 I'd say I'm fairly new to playing (I've been absorbed in D&D campaigns for more than a year but they are very slow moving so I still feel new, lol). Also very excited to DM one day, I'm a nerd for worldbuilding and storytelling <3 Until then, I can revel in drawing characters doing crazy stuff on adventures :3
You can edit messages
And just ask
This channel is literally for people with next to no understanding of the game
So i dont know how to to add thing on D&D beyond. I wanted to share my sheet to show what i remember what my PC was and I just to understand the UI guess. I Sold all math rocks years ago.
What do you mean by "add things"?
DnDBeyond will actually guide you through the process of creating a character sheet.
I used all paper stuffs. I wanna try an online campain but i dont want to feel dumb and ask a bunch of things.
The fastest way to get answers is to ask questions
No one can help you if you stand in your own way and refuse to ask
I wouldn't worry - I've played this game for years and I still mess stuff up
Hey I'm new to dnd I failed at dm'ing a school club now I'm looking to play I'm wondering if anyone is open to teach me the ropes? I'm hoping to play an artillerist artificer that's varient human with the urchin background
So i did my PC. I rememered my DM was really nice and we leveled pretty quickely. I was a level 10 (5barbaian/5duid)
Okay, well maybe discard that PC seeing as it's been so long and just start fresh

I apperciate the link. I will read it I just struggle with written stuff. thanks for the help though!!
You may find the "Introductory videos" linked above useful!
I also want to continue using that PC. I get that but itst all text stuff. The souls series is my favorite type of games. Ill admit I did need help understanding the lore of t he game. I liked listening to people that knew more. Sorry but i don't retain much by reading things. I like to learn thing by doing (with some instruction).
Well this is a text-based forum, so you're out of luck if it you don't want to read
Could someone please explain spell slots to me aswell
I tell my players to imagine or to just use coins
That's not explaining them
Spell slots are the resource you use to power your spells
Each spell requires a spell slot of the same level or higher to cast it
For example, to cast a 1st level spell, you can use a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd level spell slot
Ouh...
Your class will have a table that lists how many spell slots you have of each level
For example a lv3 wizard has 4 coins of lv 1 spells and 2 coins of lv 2 spells
For example, at first level you may only have 2 spell slots of first level
Whereras at a high level, you might have five 1st level, four 2nd level, two 3rd, and a 4th
Some spells even do better things if you use higher level spell slots; for example fireball (a 3rd level spell) does more damage if you use a spell slot higher than 3rd level
I don't have any of the books anymore. I came from a homebrew so i would like a more dumbed down explenation. I feel like im walkin inro a whole new game. I'll try the (find a game part) but I don't know how much a DM will be willing to explain things.
A more dumbed down explanation of what exactly? When u played homebrew the dnd rules surely applied?
The basic rules are free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
What is concentration?
It's a requirement of some spells; you can only concentrate on one spell at a time and there are multiple ways your concentration can be broken
My DM just pretty much let us do what we wanted. we only ment once a month for a sesion (3ish) hours. we did't have to worry about spell costs, materiels ect. kinda treated it like a FF gamee. I really liked it. it was fun to play. the RP was fun and at the end it usualy turned into MTG night.
When your concentration is broken, the spell you're concentrating on ends
Well that doesn't sound like D&D, this channel is D&D newcomers
We can't offer information on playing the way your DM did, just the way the game works as written
So which class do y'all think is the most versatile, as far as everything in dnd goes?
I came here to learn Offeciel thing. i want to try and find a new DM and try and play my charecter. with a officiel rules. im trying to learn as much i can befor i enter so i save mysely from askin dumd questions.
Spellcasters can do a whole lot! Wizard is a genuine Swiss army knife
Then you can start by asking questions and engaging with the resources people provide
I dont have die so i dont know i roll for things usung D&D beyond
What's the difference between fighters, monks, and barbarians?
Digital dice are free from countless places; websites, phone apps, discord bots
D&D Beyond has a digital dice roller built into the character sheets
They're all martial classes, but here's the simplest rundown:
- Fighters attack in bursts and can heal themselves for a quick fix when in danger, and can use heavy armor
- Monks are quick and agile, and supplement their normal attacks with many punches and kicks
- Barbarians can enter a rage state to deal more damage and take less
Oh, then I'd like monks the best
I understand that. HIt/DC+8 damage slashiing 1d8+4. Slashibg 1d10+4. I get 2 swings per turn how dow i add that
You'd repeat the whole thing twice.
Make an attack roll. If it hits, roll for damage.
Then make another attack roll, and if it hits, roll for damage.
What's more useful in the long run + stats or ability's
What do you mean by adding it?
Assuming you've gone through the character creation process as guided by D&D Beyond, and levelled up your character, it'll already be added to your sheet
I'm not really sure what you mean by that. Could you clarify?
Do you mean ability scores (like STR 15) and ability score modifiers (like +2 STR)?
If so, they're inherently tied together.
Your modifier depends entirely on your score.
do i add the 1d8+4 and 1d10+4??
Where are these dice expressions coming from?
str is 18 +4
No, what feature or ability is giving you those rolls?
I'm gonna guess you're looking at a versatile weapon.
The damage die for a versatile weapon changes based on whether you're using the weapon with one hand or two.
I was looking through all of the races and some have things like +2 constitution and +1 dexterity and they had like one extra ability/ whatever you call those extra traits and some had none of the basic things ( constitution, dexterity, charisma, wisdom, strength, and intelligence ) in place for more race-based traits
A longsword, for example, does 1d8+STR damage when you attack using a single hand, but 1d10+STR when you use it with two hands.
You never add the two dice together.
barbarian versatile weaponns and martial
All races grant ability score increases. It might be detailed under one of the other traits further down in the race description.
battle axe
just on
Ah, I was getting confused by all the different types of races
There's like 60+
Barbarian human
start with the ones in the basic rules given you're a newcomer
No worries, it can be overwhelming at first. Every race has an increase to ability scores in some fashion, but ultimately their abilities are more or less balanced fairly equally between races
You also have stat increases by class too
Then you deal 1d8+4 damage.
The 1d10 does not apply.
No you don't, classes don't increase your stats
Unless you're referring to ability score improvements as you level, in which case you don't have to worry about those at level 1
That's getting ahead of yourself
Assuming you're referring to ability score increases at level four (and a few select levels later on), then every class gets those as well
so if i get 2 hits per action i roll for damager and the roll 1d8 twice
Yes, it's really overwhelming I'm struggling to navigate the character sheet as is
You should read this chapter: https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/combat
You make two attack rolls (1d20+STR, compared to the target's AC). The number of times you roll for damage depends on how many of those attack rolls hit.
You could end up rolling that 1d8 between 0-2 times.
Take things simple and easy to start. The basic rules has a step by step guide to filling out your character sheet!
@smoky adder thank you!! the d&d beyond confuse me a litlle bit. the 1d10+4 is what confuses me.
Also there's another sheet specifically for spellcasting
That's correct. If you're playing a class like Monk, you probably won't need to use that sheet at all
So is a warlock basically just a person who got their magic by making a deal with a magical being or is it just a slight variation of wizard
Pretty much
Your first interpretation was correct
Warlocks trade for magic; wizards study magic.
Sorcerers simply are magic.
Clerics and paladins use the magic of the gods.
Druids and rangers use the magic of nature.
Warlock seems like a pretty bogus class tbh, why would trade for magic if you can learn it. Or are their "special ones" who can only use magic
The answer to that depends entirely on your character.
In terms of game mechanics, it's a completely different story.
People like to play warlocks because it's a class that allows for a lot of versatility. You can build warlocks in a whole lot of different ways.
People like to play wizards because they have the largest selection of spells, and can learn even more spells during play.
What can warlocks specifically do that other magic users cannot?
Regain spell slots on a short rest.
Pact Boons and Invocations are also hallmarks of the class.
And where that build versatility comes from.
Game mechanics and narrative are two different things. The narrative of warlocks is that they make a deal with a powerful entity to be granted magic in exchange for something. The game mechanics of warlocks is that they have unique spellcasting features, class customization options, and in and out of combat utility
Ultimately every class does things that other classes cannot.
going to ak if someone can Privite call me.. please and thank you
Private call you for what, exactly?
i learn bettey via audio or doing. and havin someone give me a run down helps a lot for me
Can someone help me
i want to understand the chararecter sheet better
What do you need help with anyway?

Hello and welcome! If you're new to DnD, the best place to start is with the links above! The basic rules outline everything you need to play, and I've heard great things about the introductory demo. If you need in-depth videos about specific topics, the Handbooker Helper videos are also really good. Finally, we have #learn-to-play for more info!
What’s a DM
The game master the guy or woman who doing the storytelling and making the rules and managing the campaign you’re in
Dungeon Master
There people who play D&D on discord but I didn’t do this. I did my way that I found local D&D community group on Facebook and did a meet up interview with my DM where he checked if I fit in with his group like a personality test and I passed that. We spoke in a cafe over coffee
Oh
Check #find-a-game
Which is better usually playing dnd in person or online
I did like 8-10 sessions so far in person I never did online and meeting new friends it is great
Being mute and disabled can’t do in person and finding a game online is hard
Being mute? Like can’t talk?
Yup
Your the first person that understood right away what mute means lol
Amount of times ive had to explain a few times to same people and dms kept tagging me just asking that question not even campaign inviting me it’s annoying so thanks
Really? That is shocking. How does it affect? Accident from injury or?
Reason how i got it, its personal but infection at birth
Okay I won’t ask further about it. I think you find a group eventually! You got great taste in things from your bio I actually think you would fit in my group if you were local to them
Thanks been rough trying to find one but I can’t stop won’t stop!
Might try looking at some of the D&D community servers posting in #looking-for-community and see if they have any text-only/play by post games
Our next upcoming campaign is gonna be HP inspired
I avoid those so far the experiences have been horrible rude to super slow players dragging sessions out not gettingdome
Metal, hope that goes well!
Where country you from? Imagine if you were close that would be a riot.
US
Aw man, I’m UK!
A lot of dnd players seem to be UK or at least the cool ones
Yeah they all been cool here so far my dm very helpful
Glad to hear your dnd experience is going strong
So, I am rather new here, but the first campaign I got involved in, I immediately got excited not as much about the gameplay as the cartography (the DM had a good map, but I volunteered to help make it more detailed and intriguing, and he agreed to it)
Is there any place in this server for someone to volunteer as an official cartographer? I would be doing it on my spare time, so I wouldn't be able to make too many maps, but I do love cartography, and would love to help others on their maps if anyone wants me to do so
I've been playing for almost a year. I've only played evocation Wizards. I'm about to play Bard for the first time in a very powerful battle.
If you want to offer your mapmaking skills, #dnd-advertisements is the place to go.
And if you want to show off what you've made, give it a go in #dnd-maps!
Thanks, there are so many chat channels in this server that are simply invisible to me. I keep having to add new chat channels to my list on this server

What chanel do i need to go to meet a DM
Looking for dm
Gotta wait a few more days then i can make a post my party has been trying to find a dm for awhile now
Yes.. prefably online. It's that's possible
Yes the channel is for online

alright today i gotta do rolls!
Can someone briefly explain how we can start playing dnd with friends? My English is a bit clunky and that makes it harder for me to understand the basics which are written in websites/players handbook or videos. We don't even have characters yet..
what is your native language, maybe there is a translation? going over every rule you need to start playing will be enough text from anyone here that it wont solve your problem with understanding what is written (also takes way to much work)
My native is Turkish but since it's not popular in turkey I couldn't find some 'good' tutorial
I was able to find a youtube channel in my native language but she seems to explain everything complicated (at least for us)

What do the letters next to spells mean? It says components it was on tashas caustic brew
It says components:v,s,m,rotten food
So dose verbal only really matter if silence has been cast?
Or if you're trying to stay quiet, yes.
Also for tashas caustic brew is the M the rotten food or is it something else?
A spell with a verbal component requires you to speak it out loud, so you couldn't stealthily cast a spell with a V component
The M is the food, yes
Ok cool
And for the S dose it matter at all dose it only come into play ic your hands are tied or smt?
hi anyone know how i can get to join a campaign
Did anybody else notice when creating a character in dnd beyond most of the text you can't read because the background and text are white, or is there a way to fix it and I'm dumb

So question, what are the basics to filling out ability scores?
Ps: I'm also trying to fill it out via dnd beyonds character sheet
?tag new abilities
If you're learning, feel free to pick any of the above methods. But be prepared to adjust your character to suit a particular DM's game and method for generating abilities.
Hi my name is Blake and I’ve always wanted to learn to play d&d but I don’t really understand it, I have watched a few YouTube videos and I think I’m starting to get it, I have the essentials kit and starter kit, the main thing I definitely still haven’t understood is, how do you know when a monster is dead? Thank you
Every creature has a set value of hit points, know as HP. When a creature takes damage, you subtract an equal amount of HP from the creature. When a monster hits 0 or less HP, it's dead!
So what's a faith
It's whatever God (if any) your character worships in particular
You can leave it blank if you'd like.
Uh, as a Monk, would it be a crime to be atheist
If I have a battlemaster fighter Giff with. +3 dex, proficient in firearms, and fighting style of +2 on ranged weapons, what is his attack bonus on a pistol?
And +2 proficiency as he is level 3
Nope. You can choose to worship no gods in particular if you'd like
That would be a +3 from dexterity, +2 from archery, and +2 from proficiency.
3+2+2=7.
Wow...okay thank you!
hello everyone I've never played D&D, but i have the starter set. my character is a half-elf druid. does turning back in a half-elf count as a transformation and is half-elf + druid a smart choice?
Half elf Druid works just fine!
I assume you're referring to the ability you get at level 2 as a Druid, Wild Shape, right?
yes
You are turning from an animal back into a Half-Elf. May I ask why it matters if it's considered a 'transformation' or not?
like if i am surrounded by thieves and i cant do anything. i turn into a rat to run away (between there legs ore something) and turn back because a rat has one healh poin
because you turn into a animal or back i a half elf
Turning into a small animal does not negate the Opportunity Attack rules
transform=turn into. right?
Transform = change. The rules for how and when you can transform are all listed in the Wild Shape ability.
same
Suffice to say, it usually costs your action to turn into a beast and then use your bonus action to turn back to normal. You only expend one of your two Wild Shape uses when you turn into a beast. It's free to turn back to normal.
What's a bond again?
Dexterity is a stat. It's about how fast and nimble you are.
Verry smart use of the ability, but if said bandits see you transforming, chances are they're gonna kick your ass still
Your bonds are the social connections you start with, and how they affect your character
Since the rat has 1 hit point, a bandit hit will remove your transformation and do a bit of damage to your real healthbar
Ah, I'll save that for when I'm in the campaign
Can you have more than one weapon
Are you asking if you can start with more than one weapon, or if you can wield more than one weapon?
Start
Your starting equipment is determined by your class. Some classes start with more weapons than others
cool strat for new peeps with wizard that knows level 4 spell, take polymorph and use it to save dying teamates.
I'm a monk, what does that mean
you get stuff like a simple weapon, darts and some other cool trinkets. your main source of damage is going to be unarmed strikes( i.e. punch or kick people). unless your playing a kensi monk
Well I wanted to have a javelin and darts, is that allowed
you will earn ki points at a later level which allows you to do cool stuff like catch arrows punch more or do class features
yes because monks are proficient in javelins and spears
Cool, that's why it has the plus one
What are all the basic gameplay methods, cause there are a bunch and I have no idea what any of them mean or do
to build a monk do dexterity then wisdom then constitution. the dex means you move faster, wisdom is for your unarmored defense and ki points and con because you need health as you will be going up close and personal
also monks use dex or strength to attack
Neat
Hello how does one find a campaign and how can one play on discord (i dont have dice nor anything related to DnD)
what monk are you thinking on playing?
?tag new online
There are types?
What weapons you can start with are determined by your class. For the monk, this is what you start with.
Equipment
You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:
- (a) a shortsword or (b) any simple weapon
- (a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
- 10 darts
i use this site alot. it details the classes
my personal favorite monk is way of mercy. allows you to do damage and heal people by punching them
Zero's post here (#dnd-newcomers message) covers some of the most popular routes to finding a game. There are still more options, but try those out first.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- Provide a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
You beat me to it
I think it comes out even; you beat me to the punch plenty of times.
I like the usefulness of the astral self but I hate that I have to wait for my dice to increase but it looks like fun, but since it's not listed in the character sheet do I just say which one I am when the DM asks or is it irrelevant
If you don't own the book that subclass comes from it won't appear as a subclass option when you reach level 3 in that class.
If the character is level 1, the subclass won't appear in most classes.
Ah, so it doesn't really matter to me then, well that sucks
Are me and my friends able to play the game completely free in a discord call or something
Yep!
The Basic Rules are free, character sheets are free, you can roll dice digitally.
And the DM can write their own adventure or grab one of the many available legally for free online.
There are also virtual table tops that either have a free tier or are just free to use like roll20, Owlbear rodeo, and Alchemy RPG
Not that you need a VTT, of course, but yes, free ones are available!
Hello, it would be really nice if someone could explain the basics of DnD for me, like in a voice chat, if possible, because the rules that i'm trying to read for DnD on DnD beyond are a bit complicated

thank you
Are you able to give some examples
Three examples were listed in the message you replied to
Happy to help
Remember you don’t have to have everything memorized.
Just take your time to understand how your character works and you should be fine.
Can you elaborate?
hello, I have a question already. What exactly is a death saving throw? or rather how do i succeed it?
Yesss i found a campaign and my first session is tonight
Sorry i was a bit busy couldnt read properly
No worries
When your character is reduced to 0 hit points, they become unconscious and must start making death saving throws on your turn. You roll a d20 and if it's 10 or higher you get a success. Under 10 is a failure. You do this until you have three successess or three failures. On 3 successes, you stabilize at 0 HP and are unconscious for 1d4 hours at which point you revive with 1 hit point. On three failures, your character is dead and can only be brought back through spells like resurrection.
On a natural 1 you fail 2 death saves, on a natural 20 you come back with 1 hit point and can start your turn normally.
But yes see the link Zero linked to
Whats 1d4 hours
You roll a 1d4 and that's how many hours before your character comes back to conciousness with 1 hit point.
Is it real time hours
I see
how much time passes when is entirely up to the DM
you can say your characters take a rest for 1-4 hours, and if the DM lets you then the character is back up and kicking
How exactly you get hit points lowered
enemies attack you - they can bite you, use swords, throw fireballs or lightning bolts, or whatever other ways of dealing damage
maybe certain environmental hazards, such as a long fall, a pool of acid, etc
if something would probably hurt you, it would lower your hitpoints
Its basically health?
essentially
Yep, that's all it boils down to usually
I'm looking for someone to play with?
the amount of hitpoints is just a way of quanitfying health
Is that a channel?
it's a set of instructions

Can players divide into diferent groups to follow different paths? Like me and my friend wants to go inside the cave but others want to lurk into deeper forest. Is that possible
That’s possible, but not recommended
Usually splitting up the party increases the danger for both groups
And can divide GM attention, which may cause one group to wait a significant amount of time for the other one to do their thing.
You can but generally not recommended for a few reasons.
- Combat encounters are usually designed to fight the entire party. So splitting up makes it dangerous.
- It forces the DM juggle more things at once than one thing at a time.
- Limits the interaction between players.
In my experience it’s usually better to split off during:
- downtime moments or very relaxed exploration such as shopping around a city
- when it may be required as a possible solution to an encounter
Hello, i want to ask another question the guide states that proficiency can't be used on more than one Dice Roll. Is that meant for the whole campaign? Or just for a predetermined in game time?
Thanks y'all 🙏
I have another question too, sorry if I'm being annoying..
How do we keep track of our stat points during the game? Do we immediately change them as soon as we level up or something. Or are we not even able to level them up during the game
when talking stat points, do you mean your base 6? Strength, dex, con etc?
No clue
Your character sheet will have a section where your character's stats are displayed.
At certain levels in a class, you will have the opportunity to get an Ability Score Increase (ASI) or take a FEAT.
Aside from those instances, the base stats for a character never change.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
adding on to this, there are certain magic items that are able to increase your ability scores
however, there is no gurantee for any one campaign to have these magic items, it's entirely up to the DM
so the vast majority of the time, that's the way

Any suggestions on how to find games that are australian time zone friendly?
My recommendation is to focus on availability over timezone, as that provides more opportunites to find more players.
Use a tool called hammertime https://hammertime.cyou/
It provides a timestamp that displays a date and time in the viewer's own timezone.
It's not uncommon to find play groups that have people from all over the world.
I get that, it's more of that i looked at the #looking-for-players channel, and all of the games are around 1am or 8am for me which i can't do due to work.
I take you're a player and not a DM?
No worries.
me too i think i have the dm role
ohh i don't cool
(GMT+5:45) i have this time zone
Your best bet is going to be to use hammer time to respond to looking for player post that you believe are close to your availability and confirming it with hammer time.
Adventurers League might be your best place in the meantime as there one player that I know lives in Australia from I know they play quite often.
I'm pretty sure Melbourne has a decent size AL scene. Not sure about anywhere else.
Plus online games of course
Definitely check out Rataoskr's recommendations.
In terms of other time zones, morning Europe games should be evening games for you, iirc. I agree with Zero that time is more important than time zone overall
There you go, the Queen of Squirrels gives a thumbs up.
Nvm found a link as to what it is
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Hi, so I'm very new to this (as in just started learning about it 20 minutes ago new) and I want to ask, how do the dice rolls and modifiers work? I've read a bit on it but it doesn't make all that much sense to me 🥲 any help would be greatly appreciated
yeah im having the same issue
Welcome to the hobby, I recommend getting started with my welcome message here: #dnd-newcomers message
Check out my welcome message here: #dnd-newcomers message
Hey there, and welcome to the hobby!
In D&D any time the outcome of an action is uncertain we use dice to tell us if the action succeeded or not.
When that happens you roll a specific die (usually a 20-sided die) and add relevant modifiers to the number rolled. This result is then compared to a number called a Difficulty Class, and if your result is equal to or higher than the Difficulty Class your action succeeded.
The links Zero405 posted should give you more details, on all that!
Depends on the group. While in person, my group sessions could last for like five to six hours.
This will highly vary from group to group. The usual seems to clock around 3-4 hours. Some groups go for longer (as I have in the past), some groups are very succinct. It will depend!
dam.
Nowadays, I set my games to last at least 3 hours, and no longer than 3h30, since most of my groups play online, and attention span while in front of a computer is quite different.
For in person groups, usually my sessions last 5 - 6 hours. But remember, this is time spent with friends. There's plenty of chatting, eating and catching up that is done in that time too.
just so i know, you just need a notebook, char sheet, and module to play right
bare minimum
And some dice 🙂
You don't even need the module. Just a copy of the basic rules should be enough to get you started!

can someone help me in dnd discussion
i think the only problem dnd poses is time
There are many ways to play D&D. If time is a constraint, maybe look into Play-by-Post (often shortened to pbp).
Take a look at this article: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp
hello can i john
oooo sounds v nice
this sounds perfect for me, because although i have a bit of time, it's the consistency that matters and no one i know is actually interested in dnd
Then I suggest going through the pinned posts in this channel, and familiarizing with the rules, at least enough for you to create a level 1 character, and then look for a group. It's not uncommon to see PbP games in #find-a-game.
i dont need much time consistensy in pbp right? since anyways we're basing it off text and can just pick up off where the last interaction ended
Each DM determines the rate of posting. Some require at least one post a day, some are more flexible, it will depend on whoever's running the game for you and your group. As long as you have time to write a paragraph regarding your actions it should be fine.
alright i kind of think im ready...?
gotta always take a leap of faith before knowing where you're going

Welcome to the hobby, @frail spear and @west nimbus!
These links can help you immensely to get your toes into the game: #dnd-newcomers message. Take a look and fell free to ask any questions ^^
Thank you I will take a look at the link
The introductory videos are a god send and are produced by the Critical Role crew, really good stuff!
Bet I have looked at a lot of videos on lore and that kind of thing always wanted to play but no one to really show me the ropes so I really appreciate it
Maybe we can team up, lol
Any time! The Basic Rules should have all the rules you need to get going, along with the Handbooker Helper videos that should set you up for success when playing. Any questions you have, you can just come to us and we'll do our best to help ^^
Thank you really appreciate it
maybe maybe
Hearing yall talk about aussie time gave me the idea that I should also find games in that time cause of how my schedule is like--
Ong
All three of us need to team up
Frfr
In Sydney rn it's like, what, 5pm? It's 2am for me, so this is perfect time for dnd, frfr
yeaaaah
Some people play early, some people play late, people play all over the world. Don't every think "there are no games in my timezone therefore I can never play."
Its 9 am for me in Germany. There's a lot of different ppl in here from a lot of different timezones. You'll get your game.
Im hoping to find a group soon
A question: a pc is now lv 2 wizard, how do I know if he gets a level 2 spell or more level 1 slots? The chart in the phb just shows me the maximum of prepareable spells..
Wizards get access to another tier of spells every two levels
And as for spell slots...
They get 3 level 1 spell slots at level 2
Yeah but do the capacity of lv 1 spells change. I.e. he chose six lv 1 spells at lv 1, was able to prepare two.
Now with level two he can prepare three.
So spell slots determine the "pool" of spells he can choose to prepare spells from
Int mod + level
Gotcha
Yeah alright thats the spell slots then
Ye
Thanks
Yeah I have a warlock at my table too. Magic classes make my head spin but I'm getting there
Warlocks are kinda shrimple but also kinda wacky, yeah,,
Do people hate tieflings? like outside of the game, the players. Are Tieflings disliked?
Like is it like, "oh man a newcomer to dnd who picked tiefling, how original."
What’s everyone’s favorite race to play as??
Hey question where can I put a combo more?
Could you rephrase the question? No idea what you mean
?
Not particularly. If you go looking for stereotypes you'll find them for all races, I don't think Tieflings are any more "hated" than any other race.
Ok thanks
dwarf
I had a Combo I wanted to look over
Is this a question you're asking with regards to a character, or as a DM?
"Combos" aren't really a newcomer topic
It's some I was thinking about
I wanted to just have it out there become I will use it but cant at the moment
Where can I put this idea then?
I don't know because you haven't explained what this is in relation to
Maybe check out id:customize and see which channel is most appropriate
It's a level 1 Artificer/ 2 Fighter Single Character combo that for players to look at and think, "hey I want to try that" or for a dm to see it and think, "I'm going use this to kill them."
It's something for fun
I'm mean it's a 3 item 2 spell one action surge move.
I can dm you it if you can help me see if it is possible
No thank you, please use the appropriate channel as it's about a character
Ok I will
What are the most common races in dnd??
That's something that depends on setting and campaign
The Basic Rules present some more fundemental options

heyo, can every module be played either as a Play by Post or Voice?
or does it have to be specific to one?
Every DM and group can run their games (and even specific sessions) in any way they want - play by post, video call, phone call, forum, virtual table top, in person...
All you need to play D&D is the free basic rules (and/or other D&D books), an adventure to run (self-made adventure or even improv, published adventure, or third-party adventure), character sheets for players, dice, and a way to communicate.
I mean yeah,as a dm when I see someone pick bard tiefling I roll my eyes a bit,but its not because something is common that its bad, tiefling in itself is a really cool race
Are here any people that live in Eindhoven because i have a party without a DM in Eindhoven
If you’re looking to connect with someone in-person, there’s some recommendations here: #learn-to-play message
If you already have a group, each of you can try your hand at DMing.
I recommend having each person Dming a one shot.
Problem is no one wants to
Is everyone intimidated with the idea of DMing?
Sorry my first language is not English what is intimidated
Let me rephrase it.
Does no one want to DM because they believe it is too difficult for them to DM?
Yes
Yep
It is possible to start DMing as a newcomer.
The key is to take some steps to make the process easier.
Oke thx
The biggest one is that you don't have to have to know every single rule or have them memorized.
DM screens come with quick references to the rules so a DM can use certain rules without having to memorize them.
Along with other information such as a damage scale and a DC scale for moments where you need to improv things.
For people who want to get started at DMing, particularly if they are new, is to start with already written adventure.
Ideally an adventure designed to be completed in a single 2-4 hour long session.
Those adventures already do alot of the heavy lifting for you. Such as creating a combat encounter, determining the DC numbers for certain checks, and having npcs already made for you.
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Where should I write stuff like Dark Vision? The same field where languages are? Or the abilities field?
Hey guys! I just got my DnD 5e starter set and the players handbook / DMG. Never played DnD before.
Q1) What should I be reading first.
Q2) How do I remember an entire book? How do you guys remember all these contents?
You can write it wherever you like, but Features & Traits is probably the most appropriate spot.
It's not necessary to remember EVERYTHING. It's a flexible game
The features field sounds like the best place to put it. But ultimately, your character sheet is a reference for you, so wherever you can best find it!
But what if there was an ability that you could use that would kill an enemy but because you forgot about it you use something worse?
The PHB is necessary for players and DMs, so that'd be where to start. The books are for reference; you might need to consult them often until some of the rules become ingrained through repetition.
it happens to the best of us
oh okay so this is normal 😛
my recommendation is to write down your abilities/spells for the character on a google doc (or use the book)
so you always have access to their descriptions
You absolutely do not need to memorize everything. Firstly, there will be 4 other people at the table with you to help you remember stuff. Secondly, it is absolutely fine to pull out the book while playing. That's why its there
you will get a feel for your character's abilities as you get more experience with playing them
My advice to newcomers is that its usually better to learn where certain rules are in the rulebook, so you can find them quickly, than it is to try and actually memorize those rules specifically
Okay. Thank you so much guys @fallen surge @ornate arrow @harsh fjord @vocal yacht
I don't need to memorize how a grapple works as long as I always know that its under the melee attacks section of the making an attack rules in the combat chapter
No problem
Same. Some rules I can never remember, despite looking them up multiple times. The main ones that come up all the time, though? Got them covered.
adding on to this, you will naturally learn how a grapple works (your STR check contested by enemy's STR or DEX check) over time when you perform those maneuvers or see them performed
just like how you quickly get the feel of rolling to attack, rolling for damage, etc

hello! i'm new to the 'real' D&D things and wanted to know more about them, so should I probably should start as a player but how much knowledge should i acquire before being in a game? sorry for the big text :<
The recommended pieces to know at minimum are how to create a character, how combat works, and how skill checks work.
oh, okay! thank you and have a great day! :)

Reminder, finding a group can take up weeks or months
dont get discouraged!
Alright
If you posted an ad as a player, you could also be proactive and browse the ads in #looking-for-players to see if DMs are running any games you'd be interested in.
Is there an offical list of subraces and subclasses any where? In the handbook?
If there is, I'm unaware of it.
for subclasses, you have to rely on fan compiled lists I think
this one seems accurate from a quick glance https://dungeonsanddragonsfan.com/all-dnd-5e-classes-subclasses-complete-guide/
For a list of races, you can find it here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
Ok thanks
stupid question maybe but does 2d6 slashing mean that you have to roll twice with the D6?
Yes.
thankyou
or 2d6 at once if you have more than one
For Tiefling, in its traits section it says they know the thaumaturgy cantrip. Now if I go wizard, will that be one of my first three cantrips?
no, those will be unrelated
Ok thanks
can someone explain to me wath the numbers mean STR
27(+8)
The strength score is 27 which gives the creature a +8 strength modifier
dang 27 Strength!
27 is the strength score. It mostly affects the ability modifier (+8 in this case), but it also affects stuff like carry and lift capacity
what does the 27 mean?
so you have a kinda "flat" number for your scores. In this case 27. There is a chart that tells you what kinda modifier (or amount you add to a dice roll) you get for checks when using that ability
For the most part, correct.
in most cases, yes
there are a few cases where the flat number comes in but the modifier is what you typically see
alright thank you guys 🙂
For now, it's just sufficient to know that the 27 is the score and the 8 is the modifier
Anything that wants to use either of these numbers will use those terms
ok ok im getting the hang of it i think
so i have these "premade " characters , the AC they have do they already have the armour added up or not?
The AC on premade characters should already be calculated correctly
so lets say a zombie rolls a 12 and you have an AC of 8 it hits right?
if you have their inventory and stuff, we could help you learn how they came to the AC they have too?
Yes, that's correct.
and THEN the zombies roll for dmg
though i dont think i ever have seen a premade with only 8 AC
You've got it!
ill go and grab the sheets really quick
thx for the help guys!
so its 18 not 8
but it was just an example
that makes more sense. yeah you got the example right
AC and Attack rolls is really just as simple as "bigger number beats smaller number" so yeah you've got the concept down
is there a diffrence in having a shield"raised"?
That's not a thing
i know its just crunching numbers that i am asking but i want to play it right
just one more thing, a natural 1 on the die will always miss, even if the attack bonus is +10 and the enemy AC is 8.
and a natural 20 will always hit, even if the enemy has an AC of 25 and your bonus is only +3
Shields give you their AC bonus for as long as you have them equipped. There's no bonus for using them in a specific way
Absolutely! We're here to help.
ok thx
yeah raising shields is not a mechanic in 5e. they give static AC bonus
A shield basically "takes up" one of your hands when you have it equipped, and its constantly giving you that AC bonus no matter what
Go right ahead
when players cast spells, howmanny times can they use it?
cantrips are unlimited.
leveled spells are (usually) limited by spell slots
Just remember, we can give you the short version on a lot of rules, but the actual basic rules do have all that info in detail. Sometimes it's better to give it a look through as well.
so for example if you have 2 level 1 spell slots, you can cast 2 level one spells per day
To cast a spell, you must expend a resource called a Spell Slot. The number of spell slots you have is determined by what class you are playing and what level you are. You can keep casting spells until you run out of spell slots
except for cantrips. Cantrips do not use a spell slot, so you can always use them
ok ok i see it here on the sheet, 2 1st level spell slots
they choose 3 spells to to ready
and then they can use those 3 spells
but can you use the same spell more then once or do you prepare the same spell twice?
The different kinds of spells that they have access to at any time is dependent on their individual class. There can be some significant differences in what they have, because of it.
well they can cast 2 of those spells or cast the same spell twice. spells known/prepared are not tied to a slot
If the spells you have are Magic Missile, Disguise Self, and Longstrider, and if you have two 1st level spell slots, you can cast any of those spells in any combination, but you can only cast two of them.
When you prepare a spell, that just makes it possible for you to expend a spell slot to cast that spell. What spell you actually cast, and what spell slot you expend to cast that spell, is chosen in the moment when you actually cast it, not ahead of time
So you could cast Magic Missile and then Magic Missile, or Longstrider and Magic Missile, but no matter what, when you've cast two of them you're out of slots
its great having pros ready to answer some questions!
If anything is different than the general rule, it'll say so in that character's features
lol love how true this is which is why the rules are so difficult
its a lot for a beginner
but i love the game!
shoutout to vox machina for introducing me
That's the bit that's tough for the new DM. As a player, you only really need to know your own capabilities.
for now its with my brother, both our girlfriends and my sister
who are all new
so they cant correct me if i am wrong
Haha, well, just make sure they read through their own capabilities. There's nothing wrong with consulting the book during play to make sure you're doing something right.
