Picking a race?
Yes. Which type of species do you want to be?
Half elf
OK. So you can write that down on the race thing. And write on the notes the name of the features half-elves get. We'll come back to the attribute bonuses later.
okay
Next is...?
class?
It would likely help you if start with a premade character that is closest to what you want. That way you have something you can use and compare to as you learn the in and outs of character creation. Dnd beyond offers free premade characters when you start up their character creator.
Yes. You can choose what you want to be. What's your character good at? What type of cool things can they do?
Oh I didn't know they had premade characters out there, thank you. I think I'll start with that so I can focus on learning other things. Thank you!
Well, that's a good option as well. Please come back if you still have questions.
Great, here are some of the options that dnd beyond provides. They have about 30 to choose from https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Though I recommend choosing the level 1 character options.

hey i have a quick question. new to DND
is it allowed to join campaigns stemming from this server?
Baldur's Gate 3 can be a great introduction to the world of D&D. I'm glad it got you interested! Its important to keep in mind however, that baldur's gate was only inspired by the rules of D&D. They changed a lot, to make it better fit as a video game. It would be a good idea to review the Basic Rules of 5e, and don't assume that you know how something works just because you know how it works in Baldur's Gate. Be sure to go in with an open mind!
The games advertised on this server are run by community members, and not managed by the server at all. You are absolutely welcome to request to join any that are open and seeking new members, if you think it would be a good fit for you, but it will ultimately be up to the DM and potentially the rest of their group if you can join or not. Every single game is different, and what sort of rules or criteria they have is entirely up to them
thanks. what channel are open games
#looking-for-players is where DMs advertise their games. You can use the reply thread underneath each post to request to join if you think its a good fit for you.

See the message a few lines up: #dnd-newcomers message
What’s the difference between wizard and sorcerer?
Mechanically or narratively?
….both?
Is there a create a character channel or something?
Wizards use Intelligence for their spellcasting and get access to the widest range of spells, making them quite versatile. They learn spells as they level up, but they can also scribe more in their spellooks. Wizards study to learn their magic.
Sorcerers use Charisma for their spellcasting, and they know a limited number of spells. They gain special abilities to twist their spells like greater range, casting unnoticed, double-casting, and more. They are born with magical abilities.
But there's no specific create-a-character channel.
So sorcerer’s are born with a specific magic while wizards learn, magic, and have to study but have more magic accessible to them?
To simplify, more or less.
OK, how do I do a game?
Did you read the bot post?
Only the basic rules, one sec I’ll read more
I have dragon ancestry? Which dragon should I choose?
@harsh fjord
Up to you. You could go for aesthetics or because of the associated damage type.
Also, don't ping folks out of left field, please!
Alr srry!!
Feel free to ask questions. Just understand that people will answer when they can.
Do I click on start new campain??
I don't think that's necessary. Have you finished going through the character-creation process?
Yup
#character-discussion is the place to share it if you're interested in feedback.
To build on this, premade characters are also available on dnd beyond.
Ok so do I start the campaign
The DM creates the campaign, typically.
Oh ok
They also take time to setup like any other social event.
So do I just ask if anyone wants to start a party or do I go to the find a game channel
Follow the instructions in #find-a-game. Asking people outside of those channels is off-topic.
Ok where do I go to add the things the community game needs
Can you clarify what you mean?
I tried starting a community game, then It told me no and told me I have to set up stuff
Hello. 🩷☺️
How did you try to do this? Did you try typing in the channel directly?

Thankssss I already know some basic things about the game, I'd like to start creating a character and joining a game later
First few chapters cover the character creation process.
As a heads up, when setting up your stats use standard array or point buy over rolling for your stats.
The first time I played D&D was back in 1983 and I only ventured to two rooms before I died. Now thanks to Critical Role and being old enough to fund my own fun I want to venture past two rooms. I look forward to learning a few things and find a community to quest with.
In about a week, I’m joining a lost mines of Phandalin campaign , I’m gonna be playing a wood-elf ranger, any advice…? 😅
For builds and things to avoid , etc
We are doing shattered obelisk after that, so..
For now just take your time to understand how the ranger class works. Like understanding that rangers in particular rely on having dexterity and wisdom being the highest scores.
Always wanted to play D&D, But just never had the time for it. Now that I'm finally free to pursue it I don't know whether I want to be a Player or DM first lol
On one hand. I have this really great world that I've been working on for a long time, I think it'd be awesome to run a campaign In my world, with one of its many conflicts as a backdrop.
And on the other hand, I love roleplaying, and have some great character ideas. Ughhh, It's so hard to choose...
lol id say player. but i started as a player. I understand wanting to be a dm and dming is good so far
I don't think I've ever been more torn on something lol
I mean theoretically, I could do both, but that's basically two different things, and that would be a lot of different information to learn at once. At least as a beginner
While there are definite differences, players and DMs should probably read the Basic Rules to at least understand the core of the game. DMs just need to know extra stuff, and as with any new thing, you can’t absorb it all at once so no sense worrying about it.

Hey, I was just wondering if there was any importance in religion when making my character? I'm using the beyond character creator
Generally no.
If you're not part of a dnd campaign yet, then best save for after you find one.
Depending on the campaign setting, certain pantheons may or may not exist.
Why is it so hard as a newcomer to find an experience like 2nd campaign of Critical Role xD
Matt Mercer is a professional, most run of the mill DMs just won't be able to compeat
Cause that’s a group that has been playing together for 10+ years
That too
all of them professional voice actors
Go watch campaign 1 episode one and you’ll see just a bunch of friends playing, being a professional voice actor doesn’t make you something special and a great dnd player it’s just a skill they have
Critical Role exists in a different environment and under different pressures than your home game, so you cannot reproduce it at home nor should you try
any group can do great things in a campaign if they develop enough rapport and trust. it doesn't have to be entertaining to watch
just needs to be fun while doing it
i think this a bit not in the way of the newcomer channel (maybe not?)
Given how many people join D&D via CR, it's good to help newcomers set reasonable expectations and understand the difference between a game you might see on twitch and what your first game may be like
It's a campaign that generates revenue so many of the players, especially Matt, can make it their primary source of income. Matt can literally make money from putting up videos of him setting up maps for encounters
For most of the players, it's something they do as part of their "day-jobs", so it's not competing for their time in the same way D&D does when you play as purely a hobby
They're aware of the fact that they have an audience, which while it doesn't affect what they do, it does shape how they play; there's an pressure to be more 'present' than you might get at a home game
Im about to run my first gameas dm next week. I'm excited and a bit scared tbh. I have many magic based people in my game and I'm not too sure how to roll for combat. I'll have to re read the rules. But it'll be fun im sure.
If you're looking to find games to join, we kindly ask that you use the channels dedicated to doing so: #find-a-game
Privjet!
Something by that really helped me was to have the players send me a list of spells they have equipped, and weapons they’ll be using then I made a list for each pc and made notes of which die they would roll. It was just an easy way to keep track for me personally. It also saves time so you don’t have to dig though anything at game time to find out
thats a very helpful advice, I'll do just that. thank you!
I need help finding a game
What sort of help?
Hello. I recently started playing a game with friends, and I'm playing a Rogue, and we reached level 3. I'm using DnD Beyond to help me understand what I do in the game, but the only available option for a subclass I have on DnD Beyond is Thief, but I want to use another subclass. Is there anything I can do, other than make an actual character sheet? I'm 100% sure I'll forget many things if I use a normal character sheet as opposed to using DnD B.
Unfortunately, if you want another subclass you'll have to either purchase it from DnD Beyond, or have someone else in that campaign who has access to it share the content with you.
Share as in, tell me what other subclasses do? Cause I have an app that does that, but dndbeyond does the stuff automatically
As in, if they have it on DnD Beyond as well, they can share it with you if they have a specific subscription for the website. If you or they have physical copies of the book, you can enter the information manually as mentioned above.
Technically, that would be up to the dm, if they are going to allow a homebrew, so it may not be allowed.
I possibly read messages in the wrong order.
I know the DM would allow it, as it is my friend IRL. But I didn't mean to do anything considered piracy, that's my bad 😓
What have you tried so far?
I feel embarrassed but direct messaging
Just figured out I probably shouldn’t have done that
Have you been looking on this server only or elsewhere?
A lot of times it's not just how we try to find games but how we go about trying to join them that have an impact.
Zero has a whole breakdown of options for finding a game, so I'll let him do his thing. But if you're after even more places to search, take a look at my Looking for Game/Group guide.
One break down coming right up
Yeah I’m not always the best with socializing when it comes to new people
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- Provide a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet the community and find events to play.
Other options
Unfortunately, unless you just join a public server, you'll have to interact with folks eventually. The hobby is a particularly social one.
The problem really isn’t socializing it’s just trying to communicate effectively, it’s takes me a bit to read people
I have adhd and autism so
I really like doing group activities tho outside of the initial anxiety it gives me
For anyone with ADHD, here are some resources. While everyone experiences ADHD differently, hopefully this can help

Omgg I watch that first channel lol, my therapist made me watch her vids 😭
What's good fellas. I spent 400+ on baldurs gate due to buying it a month ago. Got into dnd. What now?
Happy to help.
In regards to improving your chances of finding a group. Here are some tips that can help.
- Figure out what your D&D preferences are.
- There are many different ways to play D&D and sometimes certain playstyles and preferences aren't compatible with each other.
- Ask yourself questions such as the ones mentioned by PointyHat to figure out what type of game is right for you: https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4
- Use your answers focus on campaigns ads that meet your preferences.
- Reach out to ads where Dungeon Masters are looking for players.
- Given that there are more players than DMs out there, players need to to proactive in reaching out to others.
- Make yourself stand from other applicants.
- Mention, what specifically about a campaign post that you are interested in.
- Share your preferences and playstyles

That would be your DMs call.
Depending on the context and the DM in particular, they may ask for a particular skill check or decide it doesn't need a skill check.
Hi...
New here. Not new to D&D but still learning so I feel comfortable coming to this section. .
Well this channel is more for people who are new to/beginners at D&D
So you might not get much from this channel if you're comfortable with D&D
I'd recommend #dnd-discussion
Okay
Ty I'll head there
No, I thinks it's cool when you do though
Very true
Alright if thats the case and you know how to put a character together already, read some of the games from https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008 , sounds like you want a mix of rp and combat leaning more to rp. So just look for something that fits your free time.
Or the create a character on D&D beyond. My friend who supposedly knows how to play, somehow got the wrong idea that wizards were supposed to have D4 HP this entire campaign.
They had d4 hit dice in some older versions, so if your friend is new to 5e but has played those old versions they may not have realised
This friend likes to roll for hit points
Ive used D&D beyond to make characters before and I gotta say, its by far my least favorite method.
Usually just make a character on D&D beyond first and then copy it over to roll20 (where we usually play our games)
I just hope with the new core rule books there's an option to use the old one so we can still use our old books easily
It would help returning players as well
Let's stay on topic please
We are talking about the new player experience
This is the newcomer channel, if people want to discuss the 2024 core rulebooks, please use #1026901431132885064
Which are not out yet and as such are beyond the scope of what any newcomer will experience
I just dmed my first game ever and I have NO CLUE how to continue how do I make my campaign not stale frfr 💔💔💔
My advice is to look at adventures written by others to see how they structure them and what content they include
There are obviously official adventures for D&D, and lots of free ones people have shared
You can also ask in #dm-discussion for more advice
A good tip I would have for not letting your campaign go "stale" is to lean into whatever your players seem excited about
how do i share a picture? it was imgur but my comment was deleted
Make sure when sharing links that 1) it's server appropriate and 2) that you provide text context for what the link is (describe what the link is)
i did, for both
Let's take this to #moderator-support - ask to speak with a mod and we can create a private thread to figure out what's happening and clarify things.
Hey so I'm gonna be dm for the first time for also first time players like 2-3 friends any tips
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Also check out #dm-discussion
i’m creating a character in roll20 for the first time. i’m making a subrace tiefling. there is a custom option where i entered my subrace. but i’m not sure if that’s allowed, or if i put the name of the subrace correctly since it has “bloodline” in the title
Roll20 is a 3rd party tool - maybe folks in #third-party would know how to handle that although maybe check with Roll20's support forums/servers.
I'm not familiar with using Roll20's sheets.
it’s a dnd question not a roll20 question, sorry if i miscommunicated
would be ten times easier if i could post a pic
no i’m asking how to create a character correctly
the tools don’t matter for this question
there is a custom option where i entered my subrace. but i’m not sure if that’s allowed, or if i put the name of the subrace correctly since it has “bloodline” in the title
Here you are asking specifically about how roll20 formats the sheet
Another way to break this down is how would you write this down on a paper?
It's just text information and maybe some features
That's homebrew, you generally don't if you're new
Here are the rules for step by step character creation
Here are the rules for tieflings
that’s why i’m trying to post a pic lmao
if i could provide an image you’d see what i put in what section
If roll20 doesn't matter, you don't need to post a picture
Well is this homebrew? We have #homebrew for discussing homebrew. Again posts need to be appropriate and on-topic, including links to images.
i do if it’d help communicate my question
idk if it’s homebrew
Neither do we! 😅
can’t i just have permission to post a dnd newcomer related picture to better communicate my question? aren’t you two mods?
Nope
We don't give people image perms randomly
Have you read the resources I've linked you to?
yep
So what part of the process of making a character are you struggling with
i already said
Let's start fresh
the custom option part
Where is this "custom option" part in the steps I linked you to?
That'll help me get on the same page as you
it’s not, that’s why i’m trying to share a picture lmao
Then it's not part of character creation
How can it be, if it's not in the official rules for step by step character creation?
You seem to be looking at some third party character sheet or app that is confusing you
Just look at the official rules, that should be less confusing
i did.
Which make no mention of a "custom options", so that's not part of the process per the official rules
So ignore that on whatever sheet you're using
so nobody knows how to create a subrace, nobody’s played on roll20, and i can’t post a pic that’s dnd related and appropriate even tho the rules say i can, got it
thanks for trying to help i guess
creating subraces is homebrew
Creating a subrace is normally language used to indicate creating something homebrew
Which is beyond the scope of this channel
The rules do not say you can post pictures in this channel
You said you're trying to make a tiefling character, right?
You looked at the tieflings rules, too?
it says you can if it’s appropriate and described
Tieflings don't get subraces
which i did lol
as a new player this is incredibly frustrating and makes me not even want to play, a picture would make things a thousand times easier
Can't post pictures in this channel, I'm sorry, that's the rule
Have you tried using an official D&D character sheet? Like a form filable PDF or a printed out one?
That might be clearer?
Or maybe try using D&D Beyond?
i am
On what step of the character builder are you seeing this "custom options" feature?
There are the follow steps

- Race
- Class
- Abilities
- Description
- Equipment

I have my own list: #dnd-newcomers message
Hello, I'm new to dnd. I'm trying to create a character on dndbeyond. What sources are used on characters in this server?
People don't play D&D here, this is a discussion server
whenever you join a campaign they will usually say when something isn't allowed or you can ask them
do you have any recommendations for servers that people play d&d in that are beginner friendly
am i only limted to races that are already in dnd or can i create and play as my own
Up to the DM you join.
so its up to the Dm if its okar or not?
we have #looking-for-community
Exactly. If you're new, you probably don't grasp the game yet to make new content for it, though.
A DM will ultimately have the say on whether they allow homebrew (player created/non-official content) or not.
I would stick with published content to make characters and apply for games.
Work on your species on the side to get the flaws ironed out. Once you have a DM you can always ask to use what you have or work with them to build something you can both agree on.
Species created by players, especially when we are new to the game, game sometimes be very unbalanced.
It's the most accessible version of D&D to date, and is probably the most accessible TTRPG in terms of resources and finding people to play, but it's like a 4/5 in terms of complexity
I wouldn't say it's hard to learn, but you do have to put in some work
Here are some resources: #dnd-newcomers message
No worries. We all start somewhere.
Dice, a group and a character is roughly the bare minimum
Not much really. If you use a printed character sheet, maybe a pencil and eraser. Otherwise the rules you need to play and get started are online. You can even find digital dice rollers (though I love all my real dice)
Finding a group to play with is probably the longest part
I'm new to this whole DnD thing I've only played like once and loved it i wanted to learn more

How can i be dm
There's no one route to being the DM, but for me, it'd be:
- Read the rules.
- Assemble a group.
- Grab an adventure (either one you bought, downloaded, or made yourself).
- Run the game!
Unless you have more specific questions?
Thank you

Ok

Is it smart to try and DM despite never playing D&D before?
Starting as a DM is a doable task, but it requires a lot of extra work and commitment
Plenty of folks here started their DnD journey as the DM! It certainly requires a bit more effort than beginning as a player, but it's doable!

Two other resources I'd put on your radar: this guide (https://howtogm.guide/) and the first few videos of Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_). His thesis is that running the game is easy (or at least easier than it's often made out to be) and fun, and his videos help folks see that for themselves.

Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
Hi. So after a few weeks of researching this extraordinary game, me and four of my friends have come to the conclusion that we must try it. Me being the instigator of it all and most enthusiastic towards it was of course chosen as DM🤷🏼♂️
I have purchased the starter set containing “Dragons of Stormwreck Isle” and I am currently going through it. However, since I’m a terrible reader and can’t really grasp how to actually pull this off. Do you know if there are any playthroughs of this campaign specifically from a DMs pov. Like for learning?
I'm pretty sure Bob World Builder on YouTube has a video on DMing Stormwreck Isle. I'm not sure if it'll be right for your needs, but it's worth a look!
Hello!
I’ll check it out! Thanks for the tip
hi i would say im intermediate player in term of i know basic rule and wanted to start my own campaign and people were recomending reading the GM guide but the book is kinda expensiv here and i was kinda wondering how much as a dm i really need to read that and if i can just wing it
The DMG assumes a fair bit of the new DM. Frankly, you can get by with a lot of other resources, many of which are freely available: I love this guide as an aid to getting started (https://howtogm.guide/). Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series is free, as are the blogs of Johnn Four (of Roleplaying Tips) and the Angry GM. Justin Alexandar has his blog, the Alexandrian, and the book spawned from that site, So You Want to Be a Game Master?. Sly Flourish also has a lot of useful content, though he says his work is not for the beginner.
oh ok so its mostly your ability to be able to entertain your player while knowing the basic of the rules, thank you im gonna check it out !
The DMG is largely just a collection of advice, and optional rules, rather than anything you need to know for running the game. There is some information in it that is not in the PHB, that's important to know, but that same information can also be found in the Basic Rules, which is free. (The Basic Rules and the PHB are different things). One example of a ruleset that is not in the PHB but is in the DMG and the Basic Rules would be how Magic items work

Hello, I’ve been wanting to do this for a while. I’ve been looking at character stuff and I was wondering if the races of dnd characters are strict rules or guidelines
I’m making a bird bard class and idk if a bird is even allowed, at least the one I have in mind
There are over 50 official races (https://www.dndbeyond.com/races), but which ones are/aren't allowed in a game is up to the DM.
Oooooooo
If you don't have a DM yet, my recommendation is to create multiple character ideas and tweak those to fit the game you eventually join. You could make a character and set your heart on playing that and nothing else, but finding a game is tough as it is. Limiting yourself that way adds another layer of difficulty.
What it the personality conflicts with the cannon of the race?
The DM decides what canon is, so that's something to work out with them.
Nice
And if someone like me sees dnd as more of an imagination game, would that be “bad” or something if I play like I’m in a sort of a freeplay-rp type of thing?
Better term for it would be, I’m goofy
If you're still playing by the rules and your table is okay with it, you're probably fine. But if you're leaning away from the rules toward straight RP, you're probably playing something else, which is only fine if everyone at the table is cool with it.
I’ll try to be considerate and not too leaning, I’ll try to be a “goofy” play style to myself and try not to enforce it onto others, is that good?
Talk to the people you play with. That's the way to make the game work for everyone.
I’ll try though I’m still super new and don’t know any of the common terms
Also, could I post a picture of my character in the #character-discussion thing? I drew it and I’m pretty proud
Character images go in #dnd-arts-and-crafts.
Ty
And you don't need to know terms. You just need to talk in ways the other people at the table understand. That's communication.
What kinda makes D&D D&D (and the same is true for any other TTRPG) is the fact it's a game, it has rules
You can dial how many of those rules you use and how seriously you take them up or down, but at it's core, it has rules in order to create challenges
That's what differentiates D&D, and other TTRPGs, from freeform roleplay/collab storytelling

Some games happen asynchronously, but one of the more common ways of playing is, yes, for a few hours per session, however frequently the group agrees to play.

The article above covers the basics.
Could I just leave if I have to or want to? Or would that be bad manners?
Depends on the circumstance. If you know you need to leave, say that at the start of the session. If you're having a bad time, say you're leaving and do so. Just ghosting isn't a great look.
I’m predicting that most of my leaves would be dinner or chores or something
Discussing expectations with the group is generally important. That includes scheduling.
Sounds like with a little bit of effort on your part, you could get your chores done before gaming.
Calling me out lol
Yup. 😄
Roleplaying in a party with others is by nature not about you- its about the group. Part of the fun of exploring life in another mindset is the differences in interactions with others. The least you can do is think about how your preparation before game and play during game affects the other players and DM.
How exactly does cloud of daggers work? It is kinda confusing in the phb. My main question is How does the range work, is it like boxes of daggers around a target?
To build on razorwing's response, communication is the most useful tool for anyone in the hobby.
There are many different ways to play D&D and sometimes certain playstyles or preferences won't align with everyone at the table.
That is why communicating preferences, expectations, boundaries, and key to playing a D&D game that is right for you.
Hello to everyone! I have a small question, I was wondering if someone can tell if buying Volo's and Mordenkaiser worth it right now? I already have Monster of the Multiverse
Apparently, those books have some lore that wasn't reprinted in Monsters of the Multiverse. If that's not of interest to you, or you don't want to collect all the 5e books, then you can probably skip them.
those are actually the only 2 im missing in my collection XD
If you're a completist, then I guess go for it before they become rarer and/or more expensive.
What about stats and what classes can do? I wanna be a bard but idk what else it can do
Each class has a description you can read. Here's the bard, for example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Bard
For this particular spell, 60 feet is how far the spell can go to target someone.
A 5 foot cube is the total area the spell covers when an attack is made.
As an example, imagine that you are throwing a tire. 60 feet is how far you can throw the tire and 5 feet is how wide the hole in the tire is. If the hole was wider, say 10 feet, you can have it land on more targets.

Ya that makes sense, thank you
To build on Zero, the Sage Advice Compendium notes that Cloud of Daggers can affect multiple targets.
Using 5-foot squares, does cloud of daggers affect a single square? Cloud of daggers (5 ft. cube) can affect more than one square on a grid, unless the DM says effects snap to the grid. There are many ways to position that cube.

What does a “critical role” mean in d&d? Is it just rolling a nat 20? I tried to look it up online but everything’s about Critical Role like the YouTube series
Critical Role is what's called a Live Play D&D show
Where you watch people play D&D
The name is based on the notion of a Critical Hit, a game term for when you roll a 20 on a d20
(It's a play on words, critical roll as in roll of the dice, and role as in role playing)
If you’re having trouble building a character, a premade character is also a good place to start. Dndbeyond offers plenty of premade characters that anyone can claim here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Thanks! Yeah I meant the game mechanic not the show (so roll not role, my bad). So a critical hit is when you roll a 20 when you’re trying to hit right? Not when rolling for damage. What does it do?
Critical hits are described here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#CriticalHits
how do i post that UI for character so I can join groups?
it generates a number and exp date
That's something the bot spits out, nothing for you to actually use. You contact the poster either by replying to the thread or sending them a private message.
If you want to post an ad yourself, you need to follow the instructions in #find-a-game.
I'm trying to come up with a decent background for my character
Have you found a campaign group yet?
Usually it's recommend to wait until you know the campaign's setting and tone to build one.
Awesome and congrats
Work with your DM to come up with a background that fits with the campaign.
I feel I took so much time on my character when I just reworking a original character I already had for something else
oh
dang
So I really do need them to communicate with me more sob
Yeah, that tends to happen sometimes.
That why the general recommendation is to not get too attached and keep things vauge until you find a campaign to use them in.
I starting to feel like Having a in person group would be easier but it's harder to find anyone in person too
Yeah maybe it's bc I am subconsciously attached to the original version of my character even though understand they have to be someone of a blank slate rn
I think if you use any of the base game backgrounds as a template it should probably be fine. But yeah, communication between DM and players is usually a good idea ^^
It also helps to talk with your fellow players. You can definitely bounce ideas off of each other and help make your characters compatible with each other.
How annoying is it that people base their characters off of other characters?
Not really annoying, but you're almost never going to be able to perfectly translate that character into D&D
In my experience, it's better to recreate the vibe of the character, and don't try to translate mechanics
It’s also going to depend on the group, the campaign you’re playing, and the character it’s based on.
When rolling to hit with a melee/ranged attack (not magic) is it always a dex roll?
Thats right, Dex is the default. If a ranged weapon attack does not use Dexterity, it will specify
For example if a certain attack on a monster’s stat block says +7 to hit, is that a d20 roll + dex + 7?
What about melee?
Nah, an NPC statblock's to-hit modifier will have already calculated in the creatures Ability Score Modifiers
Melee uses strength unless otherwise specified
So just d20+7?
Yeah
You can reverse engineer the math to figure out what stat an NPC uses to attack with, but largely it shouldn't matter unless you're modifying them
Like, if their attack modifier is a +7, and they have a +4 Dex, and +3 Proficiency Bonus. Its pretty likely they use Dex with that attack roll
So for this specific monster (troll) the str mod is +4 and it’s a melee attack, so why is it +7? The dex mod is +1
Oh maybe proficiency
Yeah, you can usually assume an NPC is proficient with their attacks
Oh ok cool. And how come the proficiency bonus is automatically +3? Can’t a monster theoretically be at higher or lower levels? Or would that be a homebrew?
Their Proficiency Bonus is based on their CR. If they have +3 Proficiency they're between CR 5-8
If you have the DMG, this table shows what Proficency Bonus an NPC has at varying CRs
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#MonsterStatisticsbyChallengeRating
in terms of proficiency bonus, CR acts the same as player level. so CR5 and level 5 is the time it moves from +2 to +3
I have a party of four lvl 1s, and I want to let them combat a troll because the narrative calls for it. However a troll is cr 5. How would you guys suggest modifying it to fit a cr 1?
I'm scared they don't fit my needs but it was hard for me to even find a group
Even online
You could have them first go on a quest for an alchemist, to craft some kind of a poison. If the troll gets hit by the poison, it becomes severely nerfed, becoming essentially CR 1.
I think my mental disorders are getting in the way of the fun once again lol
I’m thinking of making it just like a young troll for example, but I’m asking how would you modify its stats to fit a challenge rating of 1 so it’ll probably be a good match for these players
The table I linked above also shows the stats for creatures of varying CRs. To make the Troll CR1, its stats would need to look like those recommended for a CR1 creature
Going from CR5 to CR1 will be a pretty big change, so youll need to explain why this troll now has a fraction of the strength of regular trolls, i think
half its hit points and let it make only two attacks with multiattack.
you are worthy of having a good time, if there really is a problem I'm sure the table can act like adults and let you know politely
If they haven't said anything, you're probably just overthinking it 😉
I have a copy of the book but can’t access the link you shared, what page is it on?
Thank you! Found it
Yeah, I overthink alot
My anxiety is bad
Btw what would a cr of 0 or 0.125 mean? 0.25 is a fair match for one lvl 1 player right? Why would you need to go lower than that?
Things like cats, rats, and small birds dont pose a threat, but still need a CR for various mechanical reasons
Oh ok I see
Thank you both so much! This has helped me heaps
Another question: to see if an attack spell hits you roll a d20 plus the spell attack bonus (casting ability + proficiency) against the target’s AC, right? That’s a “ranged spell attack”, right? When would the character’s Spell Save DC come into play?
Some spells call for the target to make a certain save. They make the save, and the number they need to match or beat is your Spell Save DC.
Which is 8 + spellcasting ability + prof bonus
Cool, so only if a spell specifically calls for this right? Not just any attack spell
The spell will say when they need a save. Example from the cantrip Toll the Dead:
The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 1d8 necrotic damage.
Thank you
Spells will also say when they need an attack roll:
Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 fire damage.
So are there certain spells that always hit?
One, Magic Missile
And some spells don't do damage
Each dart hits a creature of your choice that you can see within range.
From Magic Missile
I’m looking at a spell from a big homebrew (Wands & Wizards). It says the target needs to make a Str saving throw, if they succeed they take half the spell’s damage. It doesn’t say to make a ranged spell attack, although this spell has a 60ft range. Does this mean that this spell always hits regardless of the target’s AC?
AC doesn't matter in this case, they just make the saving throw
That's the case for all spells that require saves
How do you make sense of this narratively? Of a spell that you can’t miss with?
Like as the DM narrating
If a spell makes you make an attack, you're aiming it and trying to strike the target. If the spell calls for a save, you're just doing the effect and then your target has to avoid/resist it
Interesting
Perhaps the magical force of this effect is invisible, or 'locks-on' to the target like a Magic Missile
Feel free to ask these kinds of questions in #dm-discussion btw
Thanks 🙏
is mordenkainen's monsters of the multiverse compatable with onednd?
I'd be suprised if not.
have they said if the new book will be backwards compatible with all those species options?
No, not yet. Also not really a discussion for this channel
I imagine they won’t be readily compatible given species is being somewhat reworked
Hey, what class would a vampire be ?
Vampires aren't a choice for PCs, but one could be any class.
I'd say a vampire race would have the idea of a teifling since vampires are basically charismatic demons just like teiflings.

Oops, it was already sent, my bad
Oh my bad I guess specifically would be how to play like I know you roll a dice and the number determines the success of the action but is there any limits to what you do? Do you take turns doing actions? Also character creation is another thing i only kind of understand. Sorry if I'm not explaining it well
No worries
this explanation gives me something to work with. I’m going to switch to my computer to better answer this. Just a moment
Alright
Okay taking a step back.
When trying to do an action that has a chance of success or failure, Roll a 20-sided die (d20) and add the appropriate modifier.
Most often you are rolling to reach a specific number. If the result of your dice roll, with added modifier, is the specified number or higher then your character succeeds, if the result is below the number, then your character failed.
Are you with me so far?
Yeah
Great.
Now to answer your question:
Is there any limits to what you do?
I guess not
Yes, there are limits. There is a lot of flexiblity in dnd but even that has some limitations.
A persuasion check can't act as mind control for example.
And spells, can only do what they say. Nothing more, nothing less.
oh I see
In cases where the rules and mechanics are not clear of what you can or can't do, the game master will make a judgment call on what they believe is fair.
Now with your next question
Do you take turns doing actions?
Are you asking in terms of in-combat, out of combat, or both?
out of combat, i know combat uses a stat on the character
hi guys!
hello
Out of combat, you don't take turns.
You typically do things in the order that naturally make sense in the scene.
That said there are things players and GMs can do make sure no single person is hogging the spotlight.
For example, a player A can roleplay their character asking player B's character for help in a task that highlight's B's character's strengths.

Alright, fee free to check out my other responses up above as it could answer some other question you may have.
yeah I will, thanks again for the help
Happy to help.
hello, not exactly new to dnd but after watching some videos about classes and stuff I decided I want to start playing it, but my irl books seems a bit dated, like the player hand book I have doesn't have any of the races I want to play as or the artificer class. is there any good sources of official dnd info that's along those lines?
I'm kinda broke and can't afford to buy like 40 books to find the info, and I was wanting to play dnd online(Not the actual video game) with a group or something.

You would still need to purchase the books containing extra races and classes, whether that's digitally or physically. The exception would be if you were in a campaign with someone who had digital access to the content and could grant you access.
To build on razorwing's answer, I recommend stopping by your local library as you can find some books there that you can use.
I live out in the country and the nearest library is the book section in Walmart 3 hours away, I guess I'll save some money to buy the books digitally I guess.
You could see about getting a library card online. That might be something worth explorring.

@true musk tysm
If my character dies does that mean I can’t use them again or no?
Your DM will go over how they handle player death, but there are multiple methods to bring someone back to life after they die
@sharp lichen nice prof pic
The spells Revifify, Reincarnate, Resurrection, and True Resurrection come to mind
Oh, I saw a skit and I thought that you couldn’t use that character again ever, like you deleted it
I think you can resurrect it but if you can't resurrect it afterwards you have to bring in a new character
Again, it varies from table to table
Ok
Also, are ability scores like fallout SPECIAL?
You can pick it out with a set amount you can spread how you want, and depending on your character it changes the score?
The Basic Rules outlines several different ways to calculate ability scores, and your DM will tell you which one their table is using
So no? Or kinda?
It depends, read the Basic Rules
i think the lowest you can get any score to is 8 but it depends on how your dm will make you guys determine your scores
though most dms will do either rolling or point buy
Is there a video I can watch? I have trouble reading

So strength>strength dexterity>speed-ish constitution>endurance intelligence>knowing wisdom>feeling ?
yeah thats about right
I’m watching the handbook helper thing
I hate them personally
I mean it helps but I despise people trying to act quirky
They're voice actors, of course they get excited when a camera is pointed at them
Strength is crushing a tomato. Dexterity is dodging a tomato. Constitution is eating a rotten tomato and being fine. Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put tomatoes in a fruit salad. Charisma is being able to sell a tomato-based fruit salad
I saw the pic
Ty tho
Also, could I play that baulders gate game and get an understanding of dnd?
BG3 is a video game, and many changes were made to make it fit in that medium
That being said, if you've played BG3 you will have a head start

I believe they know the basics already, but just don't understand physical character sheets (correct me if I'm wrong)
Character sheets have a lot of information, I understand what some things mean, but its confusing to read it yknow?
Yes, overall the positioning, idk how to word it
The information is the same as your Beyond sheet, just laid out differently. If you click on a Beyond Sheet's Manage button, then click Export to PDF, you can see how a filled out character sheet might look.
Okok, also I saw the website determine the skills and characteristics, like Skills, Saving throws, and the Str, Dex, etc. Is there a way to determine those without the use of the page? I would like to know how to determine my own stats, or have a grasp of where to start
The Basic Rules describes a few different methods of determining stats, your DM will tell you which to use
Oh wait, Skills and Saving Throws?
For those, you add your proficiency bonus to those you are proficient in, then any other modifiers you may have from other sources
For example, Athletics is a Strength based skill. If you are proficient in Athletics, you'd add your proficiency bonus. If you have a +3 in strength and a +2 proficiency bonus, your Athletics modifier would be +5
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L&si=SwHQU7drfTXiVJx1 try this playlist from dungeon dudes for the basics they are a bit calmer when explaining the rules
Oh! Thank you so much! One last thing, to my knowledge races and classes get bonuses on certain proficiencies, right? Is there somewhere I can see those?
Classes give you proficiencies to chose from, and some Races may grant proficienices. You can see those in the class/race description

Hi people
Wazup
Hello!
Can I do two actions at once? Like, picking up sticks and looking around the floor?
you only have one action, however, you can interact with one object as part of your movement or your action for free
and of course, if you arent in initiative, these things dont matter as much
since then keeping track of actions, time etc isnt as exact
So it’s more of a “I take a stick off the ground and look for more”?
thats roughly how it would work if you where in Initiative, yes.
though you are most of the time only in initative if there is a fight happening
What about a guy constantly looking for cool sticks or something
So his eyes are on the floor, looking for shiny stuff. And sticks
if its a basic task any normal human can do IRL, its a safe bet a DnD character can do it too
Ooooo wait
So, if my character can’t do magic, could I make a bluff and act like he does?
Sure that would be deception
Intimidation or something
you could try. depending on circumstances it might be a difficult check
yeah deception or sleight of hand for "street magic"
I was thinking holding a stick and threatening
how is that pretending to do magic?
And if my character gets called out, could I poke em in the eye?
More bluffing, saying you could when you can’t
Hello
that would be deception for sure. And even if you succeed, your opponent might not be convinced your spellcasting is strong enough to threaten him
I’ve never played dnd before I just heard of it
hello
I have no clue what I’m doing.
check out #learn-to-play
Could I poke em in the eye tho?
you can try
@sharp lichen D&D is not designed for such overtly slapstick antics
So trying to do such things would overlap a lot with homebrew, improvised actions, and reflavouring
So be more serious
Do I just start reading from the top of the table of contents and go down?
yeah just scroll up in the channel all the way to the top and start from there
Ok thanks
Could I learn dnd off of that baulders gate game?
if you have any specific questions, ask them here if you want
You could the jist of the basics, but Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't use the exact same rules as D&D 5th edition
It uses a heavily modified version of them to suit being a video game
yes and no. BG does use DnD mechanics at its core but it does change a decent amount of stuff to make it work better as video game
so i could learn the basics?
so i could learn the "basics"
No, you can't really learn anything on how to actually play D&D, just get a jist of how D&D kinda works on a very high level
Again, your best bet is to read the basic rules
for example, Baldur's gate 3 handles stuff like jumping or stealth differently than D&D
good enough for me
those are pretty basic
for me, i learn off of hands on stuff, so i feel like when i play a campaign i could go "oh hey its like the game" and get it quicker
You will most likely get things slower that way
As you may often find yourself going to do something only to be told that's not how it actually works and having to 'unlearn' what you picked up from BG3
if you play D&D and are familiar with BG3, you will have a lot of moments of "oh, his works just like the game" but also a lot of moments of "oh, this is different than what I am used to"
so it has its pros and cons
I’d rather go “it’s like the game” then go “OHHHH it’s like this in the game”
BG3 gives you more vibes than anything of how D&D works, but a good portion of its gameplay will require you to relearn concepts and reassign definitions to things you already know
Eh, I bought the game and I’d rather have the seeds of knowledge planted in my head so I can use it in campaign
Besides, I can always look up how it’s “supposed to be”
hey check out #learn-to-play
Most of the games here in #find-a-game channels are online
What books should i get for dnd?
Have you played D&D yet?
No i cant find anyone who plays dnd nere me
Okay, so there's no real need to start buying books before you even have a game
You might not even like D&D
Ok
Stick to the free Basic Rules and then once you find a game, your DM might share more books with you
Once you're playing regularly and have decided "Yeah, D&D is for me", then maybe pick up a book or too
Tank u
np
Hey, I want to try out and learn D&D, but I want to know what I should do before trying to find a game (besides reading the rules lol)
You can try making a character?
Might sound like a dumb question, but should I use a character sheet?
How else would you make your character?
Anything you use to write down your characters stats and abilities, be it a digital character sheet, a form filable PDF, a paper printout, or even two napkins ductaped together becomes a character sheet
Alright, might use those 2 napkins, thanks!
What are you guys doing/showing your players when you're playing online w friends and you don't want no map but like have the whole session happen in the PCs minds.
Like are you streaming smth so players focus on the screen or are you turning on your video so they can see you?
Nah, I just let the whole session happen in the players imagination
I can't speak for anyone else, but my group doesn't need constant visual stimulation to stay engaged
I think its nice to look at something, like a painting of a place thats relevant to the current adventure
Yeah thats how I wanna do it too
Different tables do different things. Had some where we all did video calls during the session, others where the GM (me in this case) blurred an image of nature and wrote the campaigns name on it
I do have 1 group that plays with cameras one, so that would also qualify at something to look at
Yeah that's why in asking. I love the blurred image one, good idea actually
True, its a good idea too.
Even if you’re just looking at yourself
Im so excited for my first one shot so ik really overthinking. Doesn't help that 3 out of 5 ppl are using mages then 1 paladin and 1 monk and i have to read into it.
I'm ofc not responsible for all the fun but when I can help it I will
question about battle maps
I was watching NPC D&D and i saw that the DM has a book of various different battle maps. I was wondering if you can buy a book of various different battle maps of A3 size
@cedar vigil Here are the rules on customising your background
Just looking for the page of "custom background", ty though
That is literally the page
I believe you can.
Definitely I've seen A4 versions, at least.
What's the best video for getting into DnD for ABSOLUTE beginners?
That would be a great question for #dnd-media (although I think many folks would highly recommend Baldurs Gate 3)
Thanks

Does the artficers Armor counts as spellcasting focus if its infused ?
Im not sure if i understand the wording correctly
The arcane armor always counts as a spellcasting focus, whether you put an infusion on it or not. That’s part of the feature.
Oh wait, I might have misunderstood your question
Are you asking about the Armorer specifically, or any artificer?
I don’t know what a Hammer Shield is. There is no official magic item or infusion with that name
hammer and shield i mean 🙂
Ah I see. So then yes, as an armorer, you can cast your artificer spells while holding a shield in one hand and a weapon in the other, because your Arcane Armor always counts as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells
thanks thats very cool
Now, just so you’re aware, the same would also be true for any other artificer subclass if you put an infusion on either the weapon or the shield. Any object with an artificer infusion on it counts as a spellcasting focus for your artificer spells
Hey! My name is Joseph and I need help
What can we do for you? 🙂
I've been toying around on my own with creating a character and have even bought the player's handbook
But it's hard to create a character on my own, so I was wondering if you could help me out
Could you help me out?
How far have you gotten so far?
Have you picked a race and a class?
I barely got past the naming lol
I picked a wood elf and that's about it
What sort of things do you want your character to be like? Any particular features you want to try out, like spellcasting or shapechanging or sneak attacks?
I want my character to be a sort of a noble samurai warrior.
But I'm guessing Samurais don't excited in dnd
So I'm thinking like a warrior type of character with little to no magic casting
A fighter should fit then that idea then. There is a Samurai subclass in Xanathar's Guide to Everything if you are interested
Samurai does exist as a subclass of fighter, but maybe not one you have immediate access to. That doesn't matter.
You could go fighter. Alternatively, you could try paladin. They're also good in battle and their oaths can act as your "samurai honour code".
Agreed with above. You can easily flavor any fighter subclass as a Samurai of some sort
So let's say I pick paladin, right?
So how do I deal with things like points and the complex stuff?
Is there some sort of guide I can use to help me create one?
Have you read the stey-by-step character creation rules in the Basic Rules?
In the player's hand book?
It's in there too
I tried that, but it's way too information for me
Is there a more simplier way or is it the only one?
Yes, woodelf
I guess Paladin haha
Well that's step 2 done
Step 3 is determining your ability scores, do you have a Dungeon Master?
The DM will determine which method you use to determine your ability scores; standard array, rolled, or point buy
Nope, all alone
Okay, so the method doesn't matter as you're making a practice character. Standard array is easiest
If you want to save time or don’t like the idea of randomly determining ability scores, you can use the following scores instead: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Now take your six numbers and write each number beside one of your character’s six abilities to assign scores to Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Afterward, make any changes to your ability scores as a result of your race choice.
After assigning your ability scores, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. To determine an ability modifier without consulting the table, subtract 10 from the ability score and then divide the result by 2 (round down). Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
All I'm doing here is taking you through the steps listed in this chapter: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#StepByStepCharacters
Hello, I wanted to ask a confusing thing in the handbook. How does the Armour Class actually affect an attack? Is it like some bonus Hit Points or does it make it more unlikely to be hit
And is the Armour Class actually calculated or is it like a DC where the DM determines what happens?
Armor Class is essentially just the DC for an attack roll.
When you attack someone, you roll a d20 and sometimes add a modifier, and need to get higher or equal to the ac
Oh, ok, thanks a lot! I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this
And there is a calculation, depending on what armor the character has and whether it has any abilities affecting AC.
Padded armor sets the PC’s AC at 11, and any Dex bonus can be added to that.
Your AC is not +12, it is just 12. You don't add AC to anything. It is a static number that you compare rolls against to see which is higher
Hello, is there any spell that can produce some form of wooden staff/club? For a budget weapon and scenarios where you dont have your weapon
It would be better to ask this in #character-discussion

Theirs an entire fighter subclass just for you,the "samurail" subclass
Yeah there is and also you can just work with the dm to flavor characteristics to make the character come true
Guys im new to dnd and thinking of a backstory about a gnome trying to find a way to revive his wife but i lack the game knowledge. How he can revive his wife ? as far as i know there is wish and true res is there any other way ?
There are many resurrection spells. The right one usually depends on the condition of the body and how long they’ve been deceased
it will be like he just lost his wife and then will start to take a path towards the goal
like if its wish he will start and try to be a wizard after she passed away so im thinking it will be a long time
like normal res will not work
Raise dead will work if someone is casting gentle repose every 7 days on the body
@bold vault When it comes to making character motivation, it helps to make sure your motivation will fit with playing the game
Basically, if the option comes for your character to bring back their wife halfway through the campaign, what happens then?
Do you have a campaign? Because this is something that's good to workshop with your DM
its just a idea that come to my mind not gonna use him soon but yeah i thought about it what will happen if that happens but i think it will depend on the dm that day
Can anyone help me find a DM? I am new here

Other options
is there any other resurrection spell ? the condition of the body doesnt matter rn
Your spell required will depend on how long it takes then. Unless you start at level 2 you won’t have Gentle Repose to delay decay until you can get Revivify.
The next available spell is Raise Dead which has a 10 day time limit. As Enoki said that’s the most practical one since in my experience characters reach level 2 within the first 10 days in-game. You just have to find a way to cast gentle repose every 10 days on the wife until you learn raise dead.
Following that there’s Resurrection which you get 100 years for. But you’d have to wait until level 13 to get that
The method of death matters as well, if your wife died of old age you’d have to cast Reincarnate which also has a 10 day limit
Thanks for the explanation.I think bring back dead wife thing is too much for me rn but you gave me another idea.
It could work as a long term goal
Everyone needs an excuse to go adventuring
I like giving my characters goals they'll never actually reach/require real high levels so they've always got a reason to keep going
the thing in my head was he lost his wife and just goes tavern to tavern depressed and dont know what to do.maybe hears from another wizard or the tavernkeeper gives some rumor about its possible trough magic or something and then he will start to become a wizard but until he learns about its possible to bring her back it will be like weeks passed by already.
And with some hope in his eyes he starts to find a way to bring his wife
Sounds like a good long term goal to me
yeah same but as @crude musk said about there could some stuff happen that will colide with the characters goal but i think i can discuss it with my dm that day and maybe he can accept his wife died and try to find another goal or motive maybe will meet with someone on the way or find a bigger purpose idk
That can work too
In terms of working out a backstory and motivation, it’s good to keep things vague and flexible. That way when you do find a campaign the character can more easily fit with the setting, tone, and general vibe of the campaign.
Until you find an actual group, having a general goal is usually enough
You can work out the details later
Helllo everyone I came new to dnd I’ve played with friends before but I was honestly wondering how to get started and and how I can start playing more this summer

If you’re having trouble filling out a character sheet, feel free to to start with a premade character. They can provide a good frame of reference that you can use to play as you work your way up to building your own character. You can view and claim some on dnd beyond in the following link: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade
Thanks>^<
Is it normal for a dm to ask the party to make sure their characters are "bare bones"?
Can you elaborate a bit more?
it depends on what their definition of that is.
Supposed to be starting a campaign soon and ive already compromised fleshing out my characters personality and backstory so that it can run smoothly. I wasnt super thrilled about it but i just want things to go well! However another player has a really detailed backstory and doesnt want to compromise so they are kinda butting heads. I feel like it might ruin the campaign before it even starts
Sometimes new players come in with a different expectation on what a "really detailed" backstory is and/or should be, compared to what is actually used in D&D. Multi-page long stories of grand adventures your character has gone on before the campaign started doesn't really fit well for level 1 characters
The most important thing a backstory should do is explain how you got to this moment right now, and what is driving your forward. For most level 1 characters, that can be explained in 10 sentences or less
Oh dang i cant send screenshots here 😦 yeah i get that! To be fair this is just something im hearing from people in the group i jave no idea how detailed that character really is
Only thing i know is that when i had originally told the dm i was an orphan orc adopted and trained by paladins that i shouldnt "create my whole backstory"
Have you had a session zero yet? If the setting, tone , and premise of the campaign hasn’t been revealed yet it is often better to wait until it is.
No sessi9n zero id say but they have talked about the setting an atmosphere over group chats
It sounds like your DM may have an idea for the origin of your characters or an aspect of their world or story that will significant affect your backstories, and they do not what your group to create anything too detailed becuase it might conflict with their idea
Yeah it feels that way but it does seem kind of weord to have something forced onto your character. Ive already compromised just to make things easier but i wpuldnt be tpo excited if the trend continued
Whenever possible the group should set a time and day to go over the setting, tone, and premise.
That is why its so important to have a session 0 to set expectations and tone before creating characters
I see! Ive played divinity and baulders gate but Im a first time player for the real stuff so i guess im not sure how its all supposed to work haha
It is perfectly normal for a DM to set boundaries on what your character can be, so that it better fits the story they want to tell. Creating a character before you know these boundaries can lead to these feelings of being forced into something or control being taken away from you. Creating something from scratch within a boundary feels very different from trying to force your original idea into that boundary
Ill suggest that, hopefully they can smooth it over before it becomes an issue
If you’d like to get more perspective on the subject check out this video by Ginny Di: https://youtu.be/QnFStvEOVcA?si=q9vZwW9rq6fzJBrV
In the video Ginny reworks an old character of hers using her experiences over the years as both a DM and player.
Btw not that any of you asked but my character is gonna be a poi (reskinned whip) fire dancing orc from the carnival who later becomes a conquest paladin 😄 i think the gist is i want him to be a CC character with ranged fears n searing smites lol
I also recommend checking out this video about character goals for proactive role playing: https://youtu.be/DXUnEk4cuYI?si=1LMcXk1jwAZNw8LF
Is there a good resource for newbies on getting into the online aspect of playing? (Roll20, etc.?)
?tag new online
I’d want to do a game with people but I’m intimidated with the listings and stuff, I’m still new and I’m afraid I won’t get it
Go to #looking-for-players ,find a game that peaks your interest, and put your application in
See if the dm is newcommer friendly
and if he is,ask him all the questions ya need!
So I go and say “hey I’m new, be patient and please help me”?
Well first look for a game youd like to apply in
I know
THEN ask some meaningfull questions
avoid the "idk anything please explain to me everything"
ask some actual questions
How would I know what questions to ask when I don’t know what to ask?
If you don't know what to ask, then you don't need to ask anything
If you know NOTHING about dnd,I advise you look into youtube videos explaining the basics before talking to an actual dm
I think my knowledge is going halfway through a basic cliffnote book for the game
Then watch some youtube, it really helps
I have
It does but it gets repetitive and starts to lose my attention after a while
Dnd is a verry attention heavy game
you have to sit in a chair and listen to a dm for more than 4 hours at a time
So if focusing causes trouble,I may advise some less attention needing alternatives like Baldurs gate 3 and such
Of course, but every hobby needs a start
I mean watching and reading
Joecat "crap guides to dnd" and Dungeon Dads tutorials are VERRY efficient and good for newbies
I’m trying to actively learn but it feels like studying, I know I’ll be attentive during a game
Dnd is a lot of watching, and a lot of reading
I admit, I'm not a huge fan of Jocat for new people because they seem to lean into the memes
I got adhd and a pinch of ‘tism so it’s a mixed bag
Ehhhhh every new player makes a meme character, part of the cycle
It doesn't have to be
So do I,but sadly their is no dm out there thats willing to accept a player who refuses to learn the rules without it being directly explained to them, remember, their is a LOT of players willing to join any game,so youll have to put your all to get in
And meme characters are different than common/standard characters
I agree that meme characters is a pit trap for new players, but honestly,I think its a good bridge between them being themselves and their character being separate
I never said that I didn’t read the rules, I said that it’s hard for me to read and videos can lose my attention because I try to watch a lot
Then im really confused with what your problem is
You asked for help
but I don't see what I have to help ya with
I’m nervous about joining a game because I’m a noob
Then don't be,find a newcommer friendly game
remember, their is no shame in trying
Speaking of asking for help. How does one find a game to join here on this Discord?
Thanks fam 💪
So can I ask one of the ad things and ask if they’re newcomer friendly?
Pretty much
Ok
Hello! I need some feed back on a campaign I'm making. We're should I get advice on it
Sorry if I'm intrupting anyone
Thank you!
I'd also recommend starting with D&D Adventurers League.
There are games catered for level 1 characters that are generally very new player friendly.
You only need to commit to a single session and it follows rules as written guidelines.
If you want to learn more, you can read about it here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
You can also ask about it in #adventurers-league and can find games listed for the full month of July at https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081
How long would the be and what if it’s a multiday span and I am unavailable one day?
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Oh sweet
Hence the recommendation.
It can provide the steps to build up the courage to play with a group for a full campaign.
With AL, you can just to gather enough time and energy for a single session that will last about 2-4 hours.
So it’s training wheels
Hey guys! My friend and I are making a new campaign- I’ve play before but this is his first time dming. If anyways would be interested in joining and figuring out everything as we go- please dm me! :0
No, AL is full and valid D&D
Yeah, training wheels is also riding a bike
It's just designed to allow people to be more flexible with how they play by not requiring you to commit to a group week in, week out
Ohhhh
I think you want to pick your words more thoughtfully. "Training wheels" is a very dismissive way of phrasing things
Sorry
People also can and do run full campaigns for the official hardcovers by AL rules, it's just less common.
So al would be a casual game rather than a “full game”? I’m trying to put it in words so I could understand and differentiate
It's drop in, drop out style play
It's a one session game (usually).
The rules of AL (the ones that are unique to AL) mean that you can take your character to any table and just start playing
There are specific 'Learn to play' sessions, but those are a bit different
AL games are as real as any other D&D game. They're just usually less commitment
There is a consistency between tables and PCs that means if you make your character using AL rules and play at an AL table, your character will be legal for almost every AL table
AL games don't have homebrew or third party options and very limited and controlled house rules. This means your experience will be pretty consistent regardless of DM
hello
So al is more of what people think dnd is like?
No?
People tend to imagine long complicated custom campaigns when they think of D&D in my experience
Which is pretty much the exact opposite of AL
So it’s what some people think it’s like?
I honestly doubt that anyone thinks of D&D and thinks of AL, at least to any consistent degree
Everything is what some people think it is....
I thought of it
I'm honestly not really sure what you're asking at this point
AL is the organized play for D&D
AL is a way of playing D&D, that's all
Sorry. So al is good for beginners and I should start there, right?
It's a pretty solid place to start
It can be good for beginners. And if you're not able to commit to something long-term, it's a good place to start
Since it's generally about as low commitment as D&D gets
That doesn't mean you should, just that you can
Then where should I start?
If you want us to tell you something solid, sure, start with AL
Otherwise, find a game that speaks to you and try to join it
Ok
Start with whatever game you can find that seems most interesting and inviting
how do i make a proper character? i picked out most stuff but still have no idea how the stat point thing works
How are you filling out the character sheet? Paper and pencil? Dnd beyond? Digital PDF? Or some other way?
whats a application
In what context?
joining a campaign
Broadly applications for campaigns are like applications for any other context, it's some form of communication given by a prospective player in order to join a campaign
The exact form varies by DM, but usually it's just a simple message to them designating interest in joining
They may want certain questions answered like your time zone, days available to play, the style of game you like, trigger warnings, etc
Though it's more commonly handled in a Session 0, they might also want you to provide an idea of the kind of character you want to play
Looking a DM
I've already made a post a few days ago ans haven't gotten any response
That's great.
I also recommend taking a proactive approach because there are more players than DMs.
Finding a game can take weeks or months, hang in there!
As a player, making a post and waiting for other players and DMs to come to them is often going to take the longest to find a group.

idk if this is kinda rude to ask but i really dont mean for it to come out that way, but i also just recently started researching how to play dnd and honestly its really hard and kinda intimidating, so i wanna know if theres kinda a dumbed down video or something that could explain basic mechanics and stuff for me? as well as some terms that are used because ive tried looking at some sites too but theyre all using words i dont know dhahdahdaw
Where do I buy the dice and the character sheet?
"a crap guide to dnd" from Jocat can be a big help
Your local game store
ill check that out some time thanks!
No such thing here where I'm from😭
Online store then?
Then the internet is your friend
My post above your messaage provides a short 3 minute video that gives a nice overview.
idk where youre from but you could order them online! if there isnt an online store thats in your country you can try other online stores, ive found really cool dice on aliexpress for example
Thanks 🙂
ill try looking at that as well thank u!
No problem fellow basement gremlin
You could use dnd beyond if you'd like.
The character creator also provides a good selection of premades.
You can start with completed sheet and work your way through steps while having the final answer next to you for reference.
You can also use them for play.
Oh alright cool thanks
Feel free the use the link in my welcome message to jump straight to the list of premades you can claim.
would those premade characters explain for example something i struggle with understanding: anything on the character sheet where theres math envolved?
It can.
It's an interactive character sheet. So you can click on a skill on the character sheet and text will pop up explaining what that skill is, what it's used for, and what ability score is tied to it.
Hey new on the server and I have a question or rather a discussion I wanted to have with a dungeon master if I may so I could ask them about some stuff with a homebrew class idea.
ohhh thats really neat
Another example, if you select the wood elf ranger premade character and click on the armor class this will pop up:
Armor Class: 14
11 Armor(Leather)
- 3 Dexterity Bonus
Your Armor Class (AC) represents how well your character avoids being wounded in battle. Things that contribute to your AC include the armor you wear, the shield you carry, and your Dexterity modifier. Not all characters wear armor or carry shields, however. Without armor or a shield, your character’s AC equals 10 + his or her Dexterity modifier. If your character wears armor, carries a shield, or both, calculate your AC using the rules in the Equipment section. Record your AC on your character sheet.
Are you new to D&D as well? Or do you have solid understanding of D&D's rules and mechanics?
I played a lot of dnd but far from knowing every single thing about it. But I know everything basic and semi advanced Stuff
Alright, bring over the discussion over to #homebrew .
Remember though, regardless of the feedback you get on the subject, the final say will fall to the DM of the campaign you'll be wanting to use it in.
Well I was wondering if we could maybe do it in the dms? If that's not too much because I kinda feel embarrassed to talk over this idea in a channel.
hi
Unfortunately I don't have much experience in homebrew.
Plus sharing your idea over to #homebrew won't limit you to a single perspective.
Well then alright.
So I’m watching that handbook helper video series thing and I’m almost done, is there anything that I could miss that isn’t mentioned

Nice, thanks man, I made a copper dragonborn sorcerer for my first character
How do you turn off slash commands on disc?? /gen
Hello!
Hi
Can you elaborate? What do you mean by on disc?
Dumb question, but can someone please quiz me some basic topics about dnd gameplay so i can try to see how much I already know
discord lol
very real not dumb
Ah that's not really #dnd-newcomers question.
If you're having issues with this server specifically, #moderator-support should be able to help.
If it's with discord itself, discord's support can help you out.
Alright, I can ask you basic questions.
What determine's a character's armor class?
