We're not gonna be dramatic lol but we just want to have fun and actually get into it
hiii uhh im completely new to dnd and im dming a session (not my greatest idea) but what does it mean when an action says something like "hit 14(2d8+5)"? is the damage 14 or a 2d8+5?
Is it possible that the 14 is the total of the 2d8+5?
Also gonna be me at some point lol
typically you see that around Monster stat blocks.. it's basically telling you that you can take the average damage (14) or it'd be 2d8+5 if you rolled it
so i can choose?
are you the DM? As a player character, you usually roll your damage, not take an average.
im the dm, this is for one of the enemies
so yes, you could choose. I have a bunch of DMs that roll for damage
ok ty :))
Hi
Howdy
Hey I'm looking to support my fellow players in a survivalish game as a ranged utility character I rolled 17 17 14 12 10 11 we have a astral arm monk and a healing bard. Was thinking ranger or druid but not married to it. I Have to be an elf of some sort. Kinda stuck as I only played a front line barbarian before any advice would be appreciated. I know food and weight and weather will be kept track of heavily.
#character-discussion is the better place for that question!

What does it mean to play DMless?
To oversimplify, it's sort of choose-your-own-adventure with dice. Ginny Di's video provides a good overview of solo play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2nVilB8QeY
Makes sense. So everyone is sort of the DM and player?
I will note there’s far better systems to use for it than DnD
In solo play? You are the DM and the player. D&D isn't a typical GMless game where everyone shares responsibility for running the game.
Systems that are actually designed around it
Cool, sounds fun (to some extent). Thank you
I’m new to dnd and I was hoping to get into a group, for fun of course and to learn and try it out
Hello! so, not sure if this is a DnDBeyond issue, or if its just something I can't really find in PHB. My character is lvl 6 (5 paladin, 1 warlock) DragonBorn. on my Beyond character sheet, it shows that I can add multiple feats. I should only have 1 curretly correct? for reaching level 4 in Paladin? Or am I missing something that allows me more than 1 at this level?

Ok so I Wana find a game of DND and I know there is find a game channel but there aren't any other people things there so km confused do i just go into eh channel and ask to join a DND game
You find an ad that looks interesting and post in the attached thread or send a private message to the person who posted it.
Oh ok
#ddb-support is for DDB issues. My guess is you can add as many as you like because the DDB sheet is customizable, but according to the rules of the game, you'd only have one at this level, barring a background with a feat or a race that lets you choose one such as variant human.
Thats what I was thinkning. since, when I go to edit it, currently it's letting me add more so figured its a "you can but da rules say na fam"
So umm what dose other services mean in looking for dm
what crossovers options does DND have? Like can I participate in an anime called One piece or The marvel universe dnd session?
He has a good point I Wana make a crossover from how to train your dragon
if your willing to flavour certain monsters you can make it basically anything
So there won't be any legal issues? Like copyright?
not unless you share it on the internet and try to make money off of it the ogl/open gaming license has it covered
Ah that makes sense
Would I need to buy anything to make the game more accurate to what I am aiming for? Like an One piece world campaign?
not nessicerily
I play over a customizeable thing in aesprite
but if you wanna buy minis or stuff like that I suggest kitbashing
(turning trash into minis including but not limited to:bottles food containers old dollar store toys etc.)
Are there any popular newbie friendly Campaigns for the One piece world? Which I would be able to join?
I got nothin for that
Do I need to get my own dices to play dnd?
you can use a spinny wheel app thing
Oh cool
do any of you know this?
Hi there! I'm new to this discord but I have a fair amount of experience with D&D. I'm a little lost on navigating the different channels but long story short I'm looking for a group to play in on Sunday afternoons and evenings. LGBT friendly and an even amount of roleplay to combat. If someone could let me know which channel to go on to find a group I would greatly appreciate it, thanks!
sorry meant to reply to this
Hey guys 😄 So i wanted to buy some content on dnd beyond but im wondering, will yhis new player handbook make tashas and xanathars pointl3ss or less valuable?
I dont want to double buy content if that makes sense
Maybe less so
I’d watch a video on the content of each book and see which you prefer
At the end of the day they’re cross compatible
Hello Im new to DND i was looking for a guide so then once id got all i needed for a game i could Hop in (Assuming they are calls )
@brisk fog sorry for the ping, if you click that "Where do I join" and scrolling down a bit in that channel will show you the link to that channel or
click these if they show up for you #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community
@lyric fjord sorry for the ping, hopefully this Dyno thing is helpful
Ah! Thank you so much! I feel so illiterate with discord despite being raised with the Internet lol
Ah I do well Human guided introductions and connections.
I ask a lot of questions
Well after reading that, I am sure the professionals in this channel would be helpful for your more specific questions lol
Sorry Nevermind il stop being a bother
Huh? You aren't a bother, sorry if my message appeared in such a way, I meant having some basic knowledge from that channel would help you ask more questions you want to know
Sorry Im a bit estranged with new people so at the start im sensitive I will notice small things that will give me the wrong idea.
It's alright, Have fun with your DnD adventure
I said that because I didn't have Anything else to say, so was ending the conversation by wishing you a good adventure
yo
yo
how's you're day going
Okay folks - please keep things on topic (topic is D&D and specifcially learning the core rules and game mechanics)
Also don't solicit or organize games in these discussion channels - read #find-a-game carefully as it explains how to use our LFG channels to do that.
wait
so this is about dnd
but when we talk about a dnd game
that's not allowed
Did you read the server rules that you agreed to when you joined the server? 😉
Here is to Learn and another channel is to find a game
its all specific
I would've liked to i saw the Oppurtinty No?

We are happy to help new folks with questions about the game, but much like in D&D where a specific rule beats a general one, a specific channel on the discord is the place to use over a more general section.
#find-a-game has the instructions for using our looking-for channels and discussions around arranging games should happen there.
This space is meant to help folks with questions that are more introductory about the game.
I’m new, should I join a game and make a character or make a character before hand?
Hello! I'm sure this is a dumb question - but - if I have a group of 5 people playing, and one of them doesnt show up for a session, are we still able to play on without them or do we have to reschedule? I hope this is the right channel...
could someone help me with my character sheet
Depends on how your DM and player group wants to handle it
Hello, I am running my first Dungeon Master game on Dragons of Stormwrecks Isle I would appreciate some help for example like where to start and like maybe some maps would help! If anyone could help me that would be great! Thanks!
Ah, okay. Thank you!
Sorry I got sidetracked haha, that’s not a good answer.
I meant to add that some people have a dmpc stand-in, some come up with a reason the character is absent for the session, or you could always postpone the session if it’s important that they’re there
Typically you make a character after you join a campaign.
But you should take the time to learn how to create a character.
You could also use a premade character.
Generally it's recommended that you still play for a few reasons.
- Continuing on ensures that the people who did show up don't miss out on a game.
- Consistently having a game helps prevent a campaign group from fizzling out.
- Doing so helps people prioritize the game.
- Having players consistently attend helps minimize DM burn out.
Hey is there any way to find servers for dnd if you cant really do RL sessions
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- If your budget can afford it check out #paid-looking-for-game
- You should also keep an eye out for the events calendar of the server.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- Provide a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model let's people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet to community and find events to play.
Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
A quick question
Does anyone have any high elven name suggestions?
A name generator like https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/dnd-elf-names.php may provide some inspiration!
Thx! 👍
I made a guide with a bunch of options for where to find games. You can also search for Discord servers using keywords; d&d, dnd, lfg, ttrpg, and tabletop will get you results.
oh cool thanks
That's really up to your DM. There are dozens of official races and over a hundred subclasses, so odds are good something will fit the idea you have. If not, you're probably fine to describe it however you like so long as the mechanics are the same.

Hello, I've been interested in playing D&D with other people since I played Baldurs Gate III and thought "Man, what if this but with real people."
Is there anything i should know before starting? Cuz I don't know anything besides it's a roleplay game.
absolutely, Play-by-Post games are entirely text based

a decent number of things were changed for bg3

the dnd basic rules are herehttps://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules @inner arrow
they're generally advertised in the same place as voice based games
they're less common tho so may take more searching

oh, I see. thank you
Wait so I can't actually choose any race I want?
Like a goblin for example?
You can, but not all of them are inside the base game,
some of them are added on later, which would require different books
To clarify: you can choose a Goblin, but you can't choose any race you want.

Check #find-a-game . I find most tables are beginner friendly even if not explicitly advertised as so. Thus, it’s always good to ask before joining a game
Ight thx
Yes it's possible and not limited to only Play-by-Post games
When I play online I connect my hearing aids to my PC and try to have captions available whenever possible.
In person, I ask people to face me when speaking and rephrase what they say when I need something repeated.
I also use whatever tools I can to have people provide me with visual cues.
Hi
How does a rage spell work or a berserk move..
I’ve seen videos where when the active is, well, active it gives you an extra roll which they call “advantage”
When a barbarian rages they can attack recklessly gaining advantage on attack rolls, but enemies have advantage against you
Are there a limited amount of races or can people come up with their own?
There’s a limited number of official ones, making new races (or new anything) moves into homebrew territory
limited officials, new races come regularly, and there are homebrew or third party races. All in all, unlimited.
also it depends what the DM allows or not
Can a dwarf use magic?
Yes
Ok

Hı guys

that would be kind thx
Not me but i could join ya'
Gentle reminder that not everyone is a guy or likes to be referred to by that term. Try to use more neutral non-gendered greetings.
Oh im sorry.
A reminder about server rules - soliciting or organizing games outside of the LFG channels (read #find-a-game to learn how to use them) is considered off-topic and will be moderated.
Oooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh
But welcome to the server! If you're new to D&D please take a moment to check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel. They have lots of useful info and links to resources to help get you started.

In the players handbook it says what proficiencies you get on your class page and background page
I gotcha. I teach new players how this all works all the time
Ik i just got lost with all the words lol
I used to be asking here all the time but then i actually read the basic rules and everything sorta clicked (or rather i listened to an audiobook cuz i cant read for the life of me)
Send me that sheet and ill be able to explain whatever is going on
Damn discord
I really should find an audio for the book
Where? Its not in my dms

That’s weird can you dm me?
Incoming dm
Tysm!
İ have no tales but i might get tales with you people! Anyone wanna add me to their table?
Check #looking-for-players 🙂
Y’all I need a pep talk 😅 I’ve never been to a game store or any in-person trrpg events but there’s one happening today right up the road from my house- I wanna go but I don’t have anyone to go with me and I’m nervous 😭
dont be, this hobby is for people to have fun and people should have it. if your nervous try and talk to the people their. there might be somebody like you that has never done this before and is wanting to play
I’d recommend D&DBeyond. It’s D&D’s official app and has a character creator as well as a link to the free basic rules (also available in this channels pins)
Ok thank u
You can find play-by-post (PBP) on the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Otherwise, just search PBP or play by post using Discord's Explore Discoverable Servers function.
Hi Everyone, im max a newcomer to dnd, have beens studying dnd rules preparing to be a dm, I would love to find a game to play as a player to get more insight into the game.
Does anyone have a place for me around their table or could you direct me somewhere to find a game where I can play as a player?
thanks in advance

Sorry in not a newcomer but I think this is a newcomer question. What is cr? Like does the number mean anything beyond the higher the harder?
what summoning item like staff of python can I use as a druid?
CR stands for Challenge Rating. Generally, a monster with a specific CR will represent a balanced combat encounter for a party of ~4 people with an average level equal to the CR number.
I want to be like a shepherd druid but still have the spell casting of a circle of land druid
So a cr 23 is balanced with a group of 4 level 23 (ik that doesn't exist) people?
I already have the bag of tricks and figurine of Wondrous Power
In theory, yes. But using a higher CR means that the combat will be more difficult.
Oh wow so that was actually a pretty difficult encounter I did at level 10
Summoning multiple creatures at the same time is seen as problematic in some tables as it can slow down initiative. I'd recommend looking for spells that let you summon a single creature, such as Summon Beast. Or items that do so, such as Elemental Gem.
Wow! It must have been! Did your group survive?
I have conjure animal too if that helps
Yeah, Conjure Animals is one of those spells that summon a lot of creatures. Unless you really know what you're doing and can run them all very quickly, I wouldn't recommend it.
Thankfully, druids can change their spells every day. Try experimenting with other summoning options.
Yea. Ancient blue dragon
WOW, that's really absurd.
If you want to know more about encounter building math, I'd recommend checking the tables for it on Xanathar's Guide.
Ooh Ty. And yeah, but it was the final fight of the campaign
Oh, so it makes some sense I guess.
I got another question. how do I know my proficiency bonus? I've searched on the forums but I only got more confused since one says divide my level by four and round it up and the other one says divide it by two the round it down
It’s on the chart for your class by level.
See the fighter chart, for example: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/10-fighter#TheFighterTable
It's on the chart of every class and it's the same for all of them.
It starts as a +2 and increases by one every fourth level up.
... I didn't know there's a chart. I thought I have to compute it manually
found it
thanks
Soo.. I'm completely new and I don't know what to do as a D&D beginner
I've listened to a ton of D&D content and really want to get into the game myself, very much a beginner
@quaint raven @fresh arrow The very first step is reading through the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then check out #learn-to-play
See my message right above.
Then you should look into #looking-for-players or #looking-for-dm
k
But also keep in mind that you should definitely read the rules beforehand. Just watching a D&D game isn't enough to learning how to play.
No, not really.
i just wanna play a game
You should at least read and understand the basic rules to have a good experience.
if i dont understand the rules as i play ill look at them
And you can. But the less the other players need to babysit you, the better the game will be for everyone.
They already gave you the links to the channels for finding a game
what do i do in those channels!
Reach out to people who've posted in #looking-for-players
Or make your own list in #looking-for-dm using the instructions #find-a-game
Finding a game takes time and effort
Nice! I heard is a good adventure. Do you need any help with it?
DEFINITELY, YES.
I’ll come back when I’m done
OK, we'll be here.
Ty!
Im assuming the normal d&d 5e rules are similar to bg3 right?
or is that a stupid assumption to make
They have a lot in common! But the game changed some details here and there for better gameplay.
Got it tyvm! <3
The thing is i live in germany and nowhere near is a spot for d&d meaning i gotta stick to online exclusive gameplay 😔
I feel you. We also don't have a strong D&D culture around here.
But, honestly, my favorite games have been online. It all depends on who is in your group.
Servus! And yep, I'm very hard to find ttrpg communities here
sorry wrong channel
The thing is, as long as i can find a campaign in faerun ill be happy online or not i love that world 😭
Since most of the official adventures are for FR and plenty of folks homebrew there as well, I’m pretty sure you’ll be able to find something!
that makes me so happy to hear!! the thing is tho ill probably wait until i get a better hang of the rules, since bg3 is a modified version of 5e and i dont want people to babysit me :D
You’d be surprised at the places that have dnd games find any place that sell stuff for the alternative crowd or even book store and maybe just ask if they know of a local dnd scene
No we got like a nerd comic store here 😭, and they probably sell d&d stuff, but all the people i see there are only playing magic and yu-gi-oh so i don't really know if id find a group there
so is this for people that have never played DnD but want to?
Yes

There's an almost infinite number of ways to do that.
Just make sure your main stat is as high as possible and work with your team and you'll be fine.
Follow the directions outline in the first chapetr of the free basic rules and then also work with your Dungeon Master and group you're playing with to make sure your character will work well for the type of D&D game you'll be playing in.
are there any noob-friendly servers?
Many groups are fine taking on new to D&D players - but it helps a lot if you've spent some time learning the rules on your own so the group doesn't have to spend valuable playing time teaching you all the things.
Yeah, read the basics. Then look for a group. We have some channels here like #find-a-game that can help.
Then work with your group to create characters that mesh well together.
thank you so much
You're welcome! There'll always be people here that can help with any questions.
coming from communities that mainly are super unhelpful and rude, you guys have been so adorable honestly
Put your highest score in your class's primary ability. Don't put Constitution less than 10. If you're a spellcaster, have at least one damaging cantrip. And remember it's a team game, so even if you really want to be the edgy loner no-friends glowering from beneath their black hood type, figure out how this person would entrust their life to strangers.
@lyric fjord
thanks
Hey guys im completely new to dnd can i ask what characters should i start out with first? Ive already joined my first dnd group but i havent been in one their sessions yet
Pick a class you like and a race/species you like.
Casters (classes who can cast spells) tend to be a bit more complicated than martials (classes who just attack with weapons) but nothing a dedicated and passionate player can't figure out and manage.
You can but ask they may know of something
so like, if I wanted to be a dragon born spellcaster it would ok to do?
If you think a dragonborn sorcerer sounds like fun, sure!
The best character is always the one who sounds the most fun for you!
Be prepared to adjust your character concepts to fit the D&D game you'll be playing in
ok, thank you
It's a classic. Remember: class and race aren't your character, they just give you features and numbers.
your all so helpful thank you so much
This is really good advice
so I'm reading the rules to making a character, does anyone have any advice they wish they had when they were new?
Make an easy to play character to start. The more complex your character is the more difficult they are to play. Find a solid niche and start there and then branch out as you go.
ok, ok. thank you
Halp
Idk anything bout dnd and don't have anyone to play so idk what to do cuz I wanna try it out
wheres the best place to start creating a character?
@lyric fjord best place to start creating would be DND Beyond
how to play dnd?
-
Play what sounds most fun to you. It’s easier to learn when you’re interested in what you’re playing.
-
Don’t listen to YouTube Shorts-esque channels for D&D advice. Most like to skirt the rules or express bad faith interpretations of them.
-
Don’t multiclass until you have a fair bit of experience. It’s the quickest way to make an ineffective character if you don’t know what you’re doing.
- Get a group of people together willing to play
- Read at least the free basic rules and get an understanding of the core rules and game mechanics
- Someone is selected as the Dungeon Master (DM) and will act as the adventurer's guide and rules adjudicator, etc.
- The other folks create character sheets.
- The group begins playing D&D with the DM setting the scene and guiding the adventure and making rulings (deciding when dice rolls are needed and what type), players play tehir characters and tell the DM what their characters are doing. Dice are rolled, stories are told, fun is had.
But also check out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel.
dose anyone have any tips on how to join my first free dnd game
Try and have a decent understanding of the core game rules and mechanics (see #learn-to-play) and have some character concepts - then work with your DM and group to flesh the character out to something that works well for the kind of D&D game you'll be playing in.
We have #find-a-game in here for that. There's also the r/LFG subreddit, which is pretty popular.
Then go join a game!
I made my first DnD character, can I show it here?
You can or even better, in #character-discussion !
FYI: You have the character set to private, so no one but you can see it.
Yeah set it to public if you want folks to review it
oh! I'm sorry
No worries!
how do you set it to public?
Manage Character, down the bottom to I think visibility, then Public.
..it doesnt have that.. I don't see it
Character Builder (click the hammer & anvil symbol), then Home tab with the gear symbol, then down at the bottom for Privacy settings
yep I was able to view thru the earlier url link too
ah ok
You can use the earlier link also because it is the same link. The URL didn’t change, just now WotC updated to allow it to access/populate on your screen.
anyway you’ve made it Public 👍
so.. any thoughts?
Im New to dnd and i know this isnt the place for this but i need experience to be a Dm
GoWeegee you need some equipment before I can comment fully. And why are you blinded?
Got the main ability scores right, but look to have as many even numbers as possible. Interesting you picked Performance, not a typical move for barbarians. And yes, tell it you want the starting equipment and load that on there.
a barbarian has resistance to all 3 weapon damage types, but only while they're raging, it's not all the time
you don't need to add the custom resistances
Mr Smith makes a good point about ability scores. To take full advantage of modifiers, try using even numbers
when you choose your Draconic ancestry it'll automatically give you the resistance along with your breath weapon type
Great start, though! Keep going… and welcome to the D&D Party!
yep!
thank you
Just joined the server. New to 5e, but definitely not new to dnd. Been playing since 2e (remember the horror of THAC0). Took a break from dnd for a while due to real life stuff, so completely missed 4e, and now picking it back up with 5. Found the server on my local area's server "new adventurer documentation" channel, while looking for additional ways to trade magic items.
I'm fairly new to D&D and I was looking for opportunities to join smaller groups. I found this server and joined, so it's nice to meet y'all.
hi
Hello.
I just got the 5e starter set, my friends thought dnd sounded interesting but they don’t want to play it on a discord call because they think it could be awkward, so how can I fix that? (Were unable to meet in person)
Have to be really good with technology to play over digital platform. For most folks, that are new to dnd, in person is better. Just my opinion.
If they can't meet in person, having someone that is a veteran player, on the call, with .pdf access to all the books, is a must
There’s no veterans, we’re all newbies
We know dnd from dead by daylight and stranger things
you can try doing a group chat by voice call or video first, to discuss the game and get used to the tech - before trying to run the game & play characters
you got the next best thing to veteran present in your group. you're in this server. There are tons of veteran players in here. This would be the place to ask all your questions.
it WILL be awkward inherently but that’s just how it is trying something new - doesn’t mean it can’t also be fun!
Playing over Voice chat, just means a lot of theater of the mind play style
and getting a good dice roller bot
there is roll20 though. you can use maps on a Virtual Table Top
I have dice so I was thinking I could use my camera to roll
how hard is it to add Avrae to a discord server?
that is a common app for rolling on discord directly
If you plan on rolling for everyone. Having to have everyone share their screen every round, just to see dice rolls, will drastically increase combat time, and frustration
It's not. Adding Avrae takes a grand total of a couple minutes
How would I get a post on Looking For DM? I would like to get into a game to get more accustomed to Dnd
Looking for league or homebrew?
League are the official modules, put out by WotC. Homebrew is DMs making up their own stuff.
League then.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Don't need a bot if you're using DDB. Characters in a campaign together have their rolls recorded from the sheet to the campaign log.
Sheets on Beyond, characters in a campaign, voice on Discord, game on.
ah. I don't use beyond, so didn't know about the roll-logger

Is saying something like “I’m just gonna walk around” bad? Should I be giving more to work with or does that give the dm more freedom
For dragon breath, am I allowed to apply it and use the attack and as a bonus action cast a spell/cantrip, or only
Apply the effect and use a spell/cantrip but can’t use the breath attack?
Which specific dragon breath feature?
The bonus action
From what source?
Well interact with the scene your dm gives you, instead of saying "im gonna walk around" say "im gonna wolk throught that corridor"
@stone oasis, you know 6 levelled spells and 5 cantrips
But you can cast 4 1st level spells, 3 2nd level spells, and 2 3rd level spells per long rest
i'm not quite sure what 'know' means here. Does that mean I only have 6 spells on my character sheet, can only cast 6 different spells per long rest, or something else?
also you might know because of subclass, race and other stuff
know just means you can cast them
I have dragon ancestor subclass
You know 6 levelled spells and 5 cantrips then
ah, so out of the 9 spells between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level, I can choose 6 to use at each long rest?
i didnt mean know i ment have more spells because subclass, race, ect
No, you know 6 levelled spells. "For example, if you know the 1st-level spell burning hands and have a 1st-level and a 2nd-level spell slot available, you can cast burning hands using either slot."
That's how upcasting works, you can use either spell for that
But "The Sorcerer table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your sorcerer spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these sorcerer spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest."
(sorry for the flood btw), but I think just reading the spellcasting feature closely can help
Trying to understand that lol. This is my first time playing any kind of magic class in years so this is a lot to take in at once
That's fair, that's true
So I have 9 spells (not including cantrips). Color spray, sleep, detect magic, ice knife, blindness/deafness, levitate, invisibility, fear, and flame stride. Do I need to erase 3 of those from my character sheet?
I might be misunderstanding this.
You do need to erase 3 yes
but they can be any 3?
not just ones of a specific level
I'm also wondering about the difference between known and prepared spells if there even is a difference
You should know 3+ first level spells, 2 or less second level spells, and a single third level spell
Known has the innate knowledge that's set in stone, prepared can swap their spells that they can use for the day every long rest
I think I get it. I was confusing spell slots for known spells, thinking if I had 2 3rd level spell slots, that meant I knew 2 3rd level spells
Yeah you got it now, gj!
I think so. Thanks for all the help
Nws dude
and just to make sure, when i reach 6th level I can choose one of any spell from 1st to 3rd level to learn?
Yes
alright, thank you. This has been very helpful
And that process just kinda repeats until you become a god 9th level spellcaster
It was fun, yw
My main goal with this character to to be support during combat and very strong outside of combat with high charisma. My only real damage spell is Ice Knife, but that should work well enough for now.
Get some good damaging cantrips. What's your dragon's type for your ancestry?
Silver
I also have ray of frost, but I can't see myself using it much when ice knife just does more damage (1d10 + 2d6)
Fair
decided to switch ray of frost for frostbite since that will give disadvantage to an enemy when they attack. Bit less damage but more useful overall
I think I've gotten the complicated stuff figured out
Hello everyone
I literally do not know a single thing about dungeons and dragons
Actually no
I know the basic rules
I cast instant death
I mean how do I get deeper into the game. Because a lot of the terminology used by veterans seems overwhelming. What are some good free resources and what’s a good example of a play through I can find?
I was gonna say bro makes the big bucks
dnd isn't really a game you download
there's not really any lists of terminology
ive only really played Bg3
my suggestion is to just ask about anything you don't understand
But i’ve been wanting to actually play.
Oh ain’t that a good way to enter DnD isn’t it?
like make my own character and their own back story and actually make real decisions
so... do i need to write a backstory?
oh i’ve also listened to tales from the stinky dragon
It can be like a sh##ty one or a really detailed one
are you gonna be my dm 💍💍
if you want me to. i can try a one shot
I got into DnD because of The Boys (YouTube channel) they played BG3 and Legends of Advantris
Bg3 is super good and i think a good introduction for beginners (like you and I)
that’s WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT RAHHH
I really need to buy a DnD board
i’ve just been super into lore for the past couple years and i am a woman and the places where i am are not cool with beginners or women 👎
what 😭
i’m gonna download dnd beyond again
I HATE IT BECAUSE I DONT KNOW HOW TO PLAY IT 😭😭😭
WE CAN LEARN !!
will you be my DM?
we can travel the lands of whatever make believe lands we make or sumthin
i’m just a humble adventurer like you my friend
Read the basic rules
DnD beyond?
Your character will need a backstory, yes
I don’t recommend asking random strangers to DM for you
Because it’s a roleplaying game and a character needs an origin?
Like, imagine if a book character had no backstory and just appeared from nowhere
wait wait wait it was a joke i’m still catching a feel for everyone
most of my characters dont have one. other than... they exist ig.
me? sure
I got a character named Sweet Nut he’s a half-orc and is from the village called “Little Peanut”
If your DM is fine with it, but I don’t think most will
well one of my ex friends was trying to make a story where the main characters are created in their introduction story. like literally then and there.
there were more issues with the story i had but that was a huge reason why i couldnt see the story doing well.
i play one shots and ive kept most backstories to a minimum. mostly out of... theyre one shots
can someone be our dungeon master pretty please for me and Sam
For oneshots it’s not as important
You can use the #find-a-game channels to try and find a dm
But you should familiarise yourself with the basic rules beforehand
mk
Thats not how that works bud
Theirs a channel for that, #looking-for-dm
Also,"begging" for a dm won't make you a more prone candidate, act adequate, learn the rules, and be distinguishable from the rest to be picked by a dm
godspeed
I've watched lots of dnd live streams or playthroughs and I get the idea, I can't wait till this Wednesday for my first one-shot.
I don’t think he asked in bad faith but yeah. What you’re saying seems useful in the future
Its just a rule of thumb
Chat I need a big strong someone to answer my questions about making my first character🙏
have you read through some of the basic rules yet? you can just ask questions and people will answer when they can
I have, yes. I made a character and I’m pretty happy with her, I’m just confused about certain things and the internet isn’t helping me out much lol
One example being whether or not stats are something you roll before each game or if you roll them once and keep those for that character forever yk?
Rolling for stats is one way to generate the starting number for ability scores. Your DM may also ask for Standard Array or the point buy system. But yes, once you generate your starting ability scores and join a campaign, those are the scores for that character and can only be adjusted when you reach certain levels (usually 4,8,12,16, etc - some classes have more opportunities for what we can Ability Score Increases (ASI))
Okay so i have question on ASI's
Why do certain classes have more ASI's than others
Because they do, it’s part of balancing and theme
hi new to d&d, im Riley
can someone teach me?
Too many new people come through for each one to get a one on one lesson. Have a look at the basic rules, here:
yes im new,hi im bray nice to meet you
okay ill look thank you
i have looked i think i know how to play
This is probably a lot for this section.
But Hi, I'm new to dnd.
I have been watching alot of videos and some crit role campaign 3 when I have time.
I have wanted to play and learn for a while. My friends started a rifts campaign instead (because out dm doesn't like 5e and is in 2 dnd campaigns already)
Would love to find an online group.
My rifts group is every other sunday but has fluctuations due to life and what not. I just got back from a one month road trip for example)
Is there any games?
So basically my character is a spiritual construct
(A ball-joint china doll controlled by a spirit)
What methods of healing work on me?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
We cannot answer this for you, as this is homebrew. If you want an official option, I'd look into autognomes and how they work.
how about for constructs that are canon?
what are the best race and class combo for a tank unit
Human, Paladan/Fighter (if you are good at weapons and high strength)
Human, Warlock/wizard (if high wisdom/intelligence)
would half orcs work
Autognomes are the only official playable construct.
Most healing spells specify they don't work on constructs. Mending only works on very specific contructs as a means of healing. Discussion beyond this is best for #homebrew if you are trying to make your own playable race, and otherwise the answer is ask your DM.
But bit beyond what is appropriate for the #dnd-newcomers channel.
And this sounds like a good chat for #character-discussion.
You can make any combo work, but if you want to try and make a good synergy, they will have suggestions. #optimization may have more, but that's nt a channel recommended for new players as they will get very technical
ok thanks
Hi, I have some experience as a gm, but not in d&d, recently I bought starter set and a player’s handbook and I’m very excited to try the game. What do you think would be a good, versatile class combo for my small 2 players group?
Hello everyone! New member here. I joined this server because I don't know how to start off
Someone who fights and someone who knows things. Bard and fighter. Paladin and wizard. Rogue and cleric.
I am fairly new to D&D and have only played as DM a couple times using the starter kit. After attempting to create a character using the Essentials Kit rulebook, character creation feels awfully similar to figuring out my taxes. I'm sure this is because I'm still new and have lots to learn. I really enjoy creating characters on D&D Beyond though and am thankful that I came into D&D when I did. How important is it to understand character creation the old-school way? I mean, eventually I'll get it but should I have the pen and paper way completely figured out before I move on the the running the Essentials kit? I know character creation is part of what the EK is all about but should I just go through character creation with D&D Beyond or wait to run that campaign till I figure it out better. It's still going to be quite a while before I DM DoIP.
As someone who lives in southeast Asia, any tips on how to start off with DND?

It looks more complex than it is. Pick a class and a race, write them down. Distribute these scores for your abilities: 15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8. Grab a background too.
Put the highest in your primary ability, like Strength for melee fighters or Intelligence for wizards. Put at least 10 in Constitution and do what you like with the rest.
Note down your chosen proficiencies from race, class and background. Make a couple of picks from the starting equipment list, highlight your saving throws, you're about done.
I have yet to make the official character sheet, but I wanted to ask. Would a strong warrior type who is a barbarian make sense if he is also shy and timid when it comes to social interactions? I wanted to give that dynamic a shot for any campaign I am able to join.
Sure that would work!
I mean always run it by your DM and group you're playing with, but that seems like an appropriate way to run your barbarian character.
Of course! I would run the idea by the DM and the group to see if it's appropriate. I think it would be fun to play a strong character who is good in a fight, but he struggles to speak to people due to very limited interactions in his past.
Hello people, just wanted to ask: those games where you are given 4 races only, does that race i chose comes as a already made character or do i still have to make a character with that race?
Do you mean the Starter or Essentials kits? As I recall, they come with premade characters to pick from. Whether any particular DM wants to stick to just those or to allow your own character is up to them.
No kits
İ had to choose beetwen 4 races
Do you have to "equip" spells?
Do you know the name of this game?
İm New im sorry 😭
you need to choose a specific set of them that you’re able to cast, but it’s not really “equipping” like an item
Ahhhh
it varies by class whether or not you can change them after a long rest, or after a levelup
you would need to ask the DM to know for sure, this isn’t a thing every DM does. seems likely to be premades though?
Ok
I know the basic rules only have 4 classes, but I can't remember if they only give you 4 races too
the basic rules have all 12 classes, but the starter set has a limited number of both classes & races. 4 seems right? - OG Phandelver has two different Human Fighter, 1 melee 1 ranged with different background
So the Robe of Useful Things.....has additional 4d4 patches.....does this mean it's an extra 4 patches that random from 1 to 4 in number (so one could have 4 of the same, another could only have 1???
4d4 is just what you roll to determine the number of patches
The item has a separate table to roll on to determine what each patch is
But you can have duplicates there
Ok so whereas the main patches have 2 of each, these additional ones are 1 only but I'd roll 4 D4 dice to see how many extra patches I'd have
Yeah, each extra patch is 1 thing off the table
And you can have anywhere from 4-16 of them depending on what you roll
Do you post your character for the DM to read BEFORE you get accepted to the game of do you post your character to the DM to read AFTER getting accepted to the game?
Depends on the DM.
depends on the DM. some want sample characters to select players, others have a strict "character creation only happens at the table/at session zero" policy
I do it after
It allows me to access what kind of players will I be dealing with from the get go
Can you make a reaction in combat when you're surprised?
But do note that once it reaches your turn on the first round of combat, you're no longer surprised even if you were
So you can do reactions after that, if something triggers one
Does a nat 20 count when you have a disadvantage
Silly q from a noobie, can't you repair the patches on the robe of useful items?
As the item description does not say that’s possible, you cannot.
Even if you use mending, it doesn't restore the magical properties of that spot where the patch was

If you’re unsure of how to create a character sheet, i recommend going to dnd beyond’s character builder and choosing a premade character. It can be great way to study something already made to look at as you’re learning.
Yes! I've tried making 2 characters before. Thank you for the help :) I've had my eyes on this for a few months haha.
I'm pretty new but I do know how to help make a character. What software are you using
To make a character, to play on, or something else entirely?
To make a character to play with
Dnd beyond, roll20, and demiplane have character builders.
Yeah I know that's what I said
I said I know how to because the person that I saw said that they didn't know how
Ah, okay. The two messages were two hours apart and you have the new player tag so thought you were asking for help.
As a new player to D&D, does anyone have any tips or suggestions to potentially making a cleric as my first character? With more focus on being a healer for the group. I like to min/max pretty often, although I do know that's not the main thing to be concerned with in D&D. I do like dwarves though and heard that hill dwarf might be a good choice?
Dwarves make for good Clerics. If you want to focus on healing, Life Domain Clerics are the best healers in the game. Spells like Aid, Bless and Guidance are also very good for support.
@fervent chasm Thanks! Appreciate the info. Dwarves are probably one of my favorite races so lucky me for being good clerics lol
Any race that gives you a bonus to Wisdom can make for a good Cleric. But if your DM is using the optional rules from Tasha's Cauldron, you can swap the bonuses from any race to fit your character. Basically, don't worry so much about race, none of them will make you underpowered.
Where do I post my character sheet?
For?
To join a group
Oh.
You first join a group, THEN see with the DM how they want you to make the character.
Oh well darn. I already made a dwarf barbarian
For in person games you can:

Other options
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
@fervent chasm Interesting. Is there any other rules/versions I should be aware of like Tasha's Cauldron? I'm not aware of any expansion type stuff that is available
There's many versions... Relevant ones being AD&D, 3.5e, and 5e.
You shouldn't worry about that if you're starting out. If your DM is going to use any specific rules, they will tell you. But if you want more character options, both Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything offer more subclasses and additional rules. Mordenkainen presents: Monsters of the Multiverse has a lot of races and monsters.
Let's keep things channel appropriate (aka newcomer friendly)
The current edition is D&D 5th edition, other editions are beyond the scope of this channel and something for #dnd-elder-editions

My best advice I can give you beyond just making your stats/class/other on-paper stuff is that you don’t have to act like your stats.
If you wanna play a dumb wizard, pump intelligence and be as dumb as you want rp-wise
How to play? I am new.
Greetings! I'm new and I have read almost everything from the DnD player handbook but I still got some questions:
1- Which number is considered fail and success after rolling a dice? Higher than 10 would be success and lower than 10 would be failure?
2- Would I bother a playthrough or DM if I got stuttering? Or is there no problem with my condition?
-
The success numbers are determined by either the Dungeon Master setting a DC (Difficulty Challenge) that your roll plus any modifiers and bonuses will need to meet or beat to be considered a success or by if an attack roll meets or beats the target's armor class
-
Unfortunately some folks may have issues with players in the game stuttering (even though really it shouldn't be an issue). That said there are different ways to play D&D included play by post (PBP) which is text-based play.
Hello 👋 I am also slightly new to dnd
Welcome! If you're new to D&D, we have #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in the channel to help get you started.
Is thag where I get to find a group to play with?
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
We have #find-a-game to help give tips to finding a group/game as well as important information on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
That channel is confusing
It's for reading the information there - reading it carefully (the amount of LFG posts we have to delete because folks didn't read the instructions is annoyingly large 😉 )
If I find a dm do I message them in a private chat?
You can direct message a poster in #looking-for-players or use the thread attached to their post to communicate with them (some folks don't allow private messages from folks they haven't friended so the thread way may be the best option to try first)
What are paid dnd services? Is that like, I have to pay real money to play?
You pay a DM to run a game/campaign for you and your group.
So, I pay them to play?
Yes - they run D&D games/campaigns that require payment to play in them.
I only just wanna play, not pay, hope I find some
Also check out some of the other D&D servers advertising in #looking-for-community - they may have other kinds of D&D games (play by post, community D&D games, westmarch style games) as well as other places folkc are advertising their D&D games.
Thanks!!
Hey there! Newcomer to DnD here, I've always had a major urge to play DnD but I work 14 hours days for 15 days on 7 off so I didn't think I'd ever have a chance too, is there some sort of slow way I'd be able to pop in for a session here and there when I have time? Cheers!
Unfortunately, your only options would be play-post OR maybe some more flexibly or sparsely scheduled sessions
You could try looking for what we call a West Marches game. It's a type of campaign specifically made for players to pop in and out when it better suits them.
First off you should read and understand the basic rules of the game. Next you may start looking for such a game on #looking-for-community or somewhere else on the internet.
Community campaigns such as West Marches and Adventurers League are great for people with busy schedules.
Since you are new to D&D I would recommend Adventurers League the most because it's new player friendly and follows rules as written.
** Adventurers League**
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- Can be be played online and in person
- Provide a beginner friendly environment to learn how to play
- The single session model allows people commit to a single session at a time.
- The server has #adventurers-league and #1050206572535623690 where you can meet to community and find events to play.
The items from the Robe of Useful Things....do they last only for a round? Or are they permanent???
The individual patches have a single use, but you keep the items you get from it.
Once the last patch is removed, the robe becomes an ordinary garment.
Playing D&D online, is there a preferred place to create a character sheet and so on? As well as anything I have to or should buy?
It is going to depend on what the group or the DM wants to use to play dnd.
Some choices like foundry or roll20 will can give players options to have a character sheet.
But overall your mileage will vary on the platform used.
Hi, I'm a new DM (completely novice) and I had a session with some of my friends last night. Is there any way to be more engaging/descriptive of their surroundings? Is there any tips that I could be given to make sure the adventure goes smoothly? I have limited vocabulary when put on the spot to decsribe things, so I would like some help if possible
Yes, you can use tools such as dscryb https://dscryb.com/
I also recommend reading pre-made adventures to see examples of scenes being described.
@true musk I see! Yeah, I was checking out roll20 for a bit but it seemed like to unlock more options in the character creation, I had to pay, unless I'm missing something. Not that I'm opposed to doing so if I have to, but thought I would ask here what the ideal place to go is!
In terms of online options such as roll20 and dndbeyond, having content automatically added to a character sheet will cost money. If you already have the physical books, you can manually add in the content yourself but it will take time and work to do so.
Overall I would recommend you wait on buying anything until you have a group and know what platform you'll be playing on. The free SRD content provides a lot of content to begin with.
So window shop options such as roll20, dndbeyond, foundry, owlbear rodeo, Alchemy RPG, fantasy grounds and more.
Hey everyone! I've played d&d once or twice, but I'm still relatively new. I'm so into One Piece right now and was wondering if anyone at all happens to have any game set in the One Piece world or something? 😭
Hey team I’m a newbie, I’ve played a taster and bg3 but really want to get more into it but to scared to do IRL, does anyone have any oneshots starting? I’m in Australia/oce 🙂

Hey there
Welcome to the hobby.
For something that combines two mediums, anime and D&D, your options will be limited as that will be more niche.
If can't find a campaign with that setting, your best bet will be to Dungeon Master it yourself.

If you’re unsure of how to create a character sheet, i recommend going to dnd beyond’s character builder and choosing a premade character. It can be great way to study something already made to look at as you’re learning.
Not against the idea, thank for the insight!
Happy to help.
Given that you're new to dnd you can definitely work your way up to it.
You can start with playing a couple of one shots. (One-Shot: An adventure meant to be completed in a single session)
Then try to DM a few one shots.
Afterwards try making a one shot with that setting,
And before you know it, you'll have built up the skills to run a full campaign with that setting.
Hello!! I’m somewhat new to D&D and having trouble finding a group

Huh I didn't know that. Thanks!

Can Allie’s see through my darkness spell if they have dark vision? Am a shadow sorc
Darkvision can't usually see through magical darkness
Also, from the spell description:
A creature with darkvision can't see through this darkness, and nonmagical light can't illuminate it.

What fighting style is best for killing enemies for fighter?
Depends on your weapon
Glaive
Yeah it depends. #optimization can help you out with that.
really high damage Glaive does
because of my stats, it does like 20-30 damage per hit

So does anyone know how to play DND irl. I've played other tabletop RPGs but its always a friend group. I don't have acsess to that anymore so how to I play DND with people?
hi there !
You'll need to find somewhere people advertise social activities, such as
- Local gaming stores
- Bookshops
- Libraries
- Places of worship
- Community centers
Alternatively you can look for websites that can be used to coordinate in person activities, such as Warhorn, MeetUp, or Facebook
Check out the links in the dyno post below your message, which can also be found in this channel’s pins. They have a link to the free basic rules and Handbooker Helper video supplement
I saw your other post in #character-discussion and I’m assuming the giant slaying short sword is a magic item you made? Generally characters only start with their starting equipment + background equipment unless your DM says otherwise
New into dnd. Started watching fantasy high out of boredom and binged watched the entire season 1 and now into season 2.
havent played any dnd campaign before but would really like to join if any of the party still have space for an extremely new player !
Thank you
Well, the first step would be reading the basic rules (available for free on the Wizards of the Coast website). You should also visit #learn-to-play. Next you can look for a game in your local game store, Adventurer's League or even something online.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I did a run through on the links and tried the tutorial solo campaign available on the website.
As I have watched around 13 episodes so i have basic idea on attacks spell slots and other mechanics
Created a custom character and etc etc
Btw are ai character icons frowned upon in the community or does it depend from group to group ?
That's a good start!
You should try reading the rules and creating a level one character on your own. There's also loads and loads of videos on YouTube that can help you. If you ever find yourself in doubt, you should come back here and ask.
I want to try some campaigns and introduce the game to my friends (they are not so much into fantasy and stuff) but i think they might like the game
if your going to dm make sure you do whatever they want (within reason of course) and there is a intro to a campaign you can claim on dndb
Hey everyone! I’m fairly new to D&D and something I wanted to ask about is Max HP increase when you level up. I understand you roll your hit die and add you constitution modifier, but it seems kind of wild to me because that’s such an insanely important roll. I understand you can also just take half your hit die, but that can be nothing if your HD is like d6. Is just adding the highest possible value of your HD every time you level up a common home rule with DMs?
I disagree. The kind of campaign that’s run should be a compromise with everyone on board. Usually I’d say the DM has the most say, but I get it’s hard if you’re running with friends as opposed to seeking out a group that matches your desired game. The DM is a player too.
But is it more beginner friendly if you arent stickler for rules?
I mean you need to be strict about rules but allow players to have extra advantage might make story a bit more compelling for them
yeah i do to but intro to stromwreaked isles is a good one for new players i think
depends on the campagin but most are pretty 'go here do this then do that' but if its a homebrew campagin you can do whatever you want
That is part of the balancing aspect of 5e that PC health is relatively low compared to monsters, and to balance more powerful classes (I.e. wizards).
I’d say always taking max is an uncommon house rule. I feel it’s widely acknowledged that running max HP is a major power boost to players.
House rules go a bit beyond the scope of this channel
I've never seen that house rule before. But also you shouldn't worry that much about HP if you're using the dice average. D&D isn't like a computer game where monsters deal hundreds of points of damage.
Here, we keep things to RAW for the sake of simplicity
There are also many other ways to bolster your defenses including AC, saves, resistances, and class features like evasion
The campaign i watched generally used ac as saves on hit but i didnt understand how they calculated damage
That's homebrew and, as mentioned, beyond the scope of this channel
i guess resistance and weakness were calculated but never explained as combat progressed in each scenario
Thanks! I’m running a campaign where everyone is a sorcerer, what can I do to help them be less squishy as a group?
@real stone We have #character-discussion for getting suggestions on improving your character and their strengthd
Do all campaigns follow the same set of base rules?
To some degree, yes
All campaigns that are, for example, D&D fifth edition will in theory use elements of the core rules
However people modify the core rules in varying degrees that some might say makes it no longer D&D while others would say it is
However, for the sake of this channel, the assumption is using the D&D 5th edition Basic Rules with no modifications
Got it and i believe it makes the campaigns more beginner friendly and less complex?
No, more it makes it easier to explain what the game is and how it works
It's the concept of a "shared language" for talking about the game and helping each other understand it
So when someone talks about "saving throws" or "armor class" or "stat blocks", we're all on the same page
hey im new here and i was wondering if anyone could teach me how to dnd works to an extend ive never really tried it before but it seems really interested and i want to participate in some campaigns online since i have nothing else to do this summer

Could anyone teach me how to play Dnd? I’m new.

Ahh ok
Hey y'all. Just curious...where would people usually just chat casually in this server?
Would it be the dnd discussion thread or here?
Ok! Thank you! @fervent chasm
i just finished making my first character
it took nearly an hour of figuring things out
i used the online thing so i can link it to you if you want to see if theres any issues
#character-discussion would be the place to share!
Hey guys I’m new to dnd I was just looking for podcasts to listen (preferably beginner podcasts)
What are your recommendations? Thanks in advance
I'm not sure how beginner-friendly they are, but popular titles I hear often are Not Another D&D Podcast, Dungeons and Daddies, The Adventure Zone, and Tales from the Stinky Dragon.
Thank you so much!
I’m partial to Daniel rustages isekai (very goofy players and story) and one piece dnd (less, but still, goofy and you need no one piece knowledge to enjoy). These were what got me into dnd
I’ve also heard good things about girls who don’t dnd which is made up of players who haven’t played before, so I suppose that would be beginner friendly
Thank you for your help! I’ll check them out. As long as they are somewhat “educational” I’ll take it lol
I don’t know exactly how educational these live plays will be but I would say isekai has less of a homebrew influence
But he makes it clear what is homebrew and what isn’t so it shouldn’t matter too much for either
I'm checking out the first episode, and it's delightful! Genuinely cool to hear new folks be brought into the game and just have fun without being intimidated by how much they don't know.
Thanks for putting it on my radar.
That’s great to hear! Happy you’re enjoying it!
What's a good place to start when wanting to start a new campaign I'm trying to play don't have a character but just seeing some campaigns online people are playing I've really wanted to get started

Hi
I've just finished the starter set and the essential kit
Which set do you advise me?
Not all story in dungeons and in Italian version
Thank you
Are you after another adventure/campaign book? What sort of things did you enjoy from what you played so far?
I liked the wide possibility of choice between explorations and actions
I think i'm looking for an already writed story

So something sandboxy then. The sandboxy campaigns I know are Storm King's Thunder and the hexcrawl of Tomb of Annihilation. Maybe someone else has memories of others?
I want to learn how to play but but there is so much I need to read from the essential starter kit 😩
Curse of Strahd is regarded as one of the best adventures, but it can be complicated for the DM to run.
Yeah, I'm trying to think of less complicated sandboxes too
Genuine question I’m new so sorry if it’s cringe lol but I picked Druid for my character bc I fw animal powers but I wanted my character to be like a dps magic user. Is wild shape and other Druid spells good enough to compete with the other magic classes in terms of dmg and badassery?
Don't feel like you need to memorize everything. Having a good base line of information will make your games run smoother, but there will be 4-5 other people in your group to help remind you of anything you might forget. Plus, you can always pull out a rule book while playing, too. For now, just focus on making your character. That's the one thing you need to do before playing the game
I think druids are awesome, but damage is not where they excel (Conjure Animals notwithstanding).
Wild shape is mostly only useful in combat if you pick the Circle of the Moon subclass. If you do a different subclass, wildshape is more of a utility and scouting tool/
Thank you!!!
Wdym conjure animals notwithstanding sorry we are on our second session of the campaign so I’m only level two and yeah I picked circle of the moon
conjure animals is a druid spell and it does an insane amount of damage.
Isn’t that circle of the Shepard?
Or rather, can do an insane amount.
Conjure Animals is a pretty broken spell, that can be used to do massive amounts of damage, but usually through cheesing it and weird rules loopholes. So razor wing was saying that druids don't normally do a ton of damage, unless you use that spell
Yeah, it's one exception. And it can bog down combat, so it's not unusual for it to be banned.
Nah its all druids, but sheperds summons are buffed even further.
Moon Druids will do a lot of damage in wildshape compared to others till level 4-5 btw.
Honestly if youre a druid you can just take summon beast at level 3 and you'll do just as much damage, if not more, than anyone else in the group.
I’m too indecisive for this LOL wasn’t wild shape nerfed so that ur stats don’t enhance tho? I’m on TikTok dnd so it’s prob wrong
Its hard to go wrong with druids
Don't trust social media for information.
Okok I didn’t know that I swear he said I can only do that as Shepard so yay
the new core rulebooks might change some things but they arent out yet so we can only talk about how things work in the current version of the game
any talks about "buffs" and "nerfs" to D&D content is probably referring to the new players handbook, which releases this September. It hasn't changed yet
Thats a playtest for the next edition, dont worry about that. You can have a 5 in every stat in druid and still be OP, you cant go wrong.
Ty for all the answers LMFAO yall are so sweet. Okay so ig I’ll stay as moon and pick summon beast for next level ty I was about to scrap everything and completely change everything before I get too far 🥰
Anytime pal, if you need anything let us know, we got you
When in doubt, talk to your table! The game runs on communication, so if you find yourself stuck, not enjoying things, whatever, put your heads together with your fellow players and DM. Like the party, you're stronger together.
Not next edition, it's still D&D fifth edition
It's a new/next edition so let's not go spreading mis/disinformation in the channel where newcomers are most likely to get confused by inaccurate statements
It is still D&D fifth edition, just new core rulebooks (Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual). The 2014 versions of those books are still usable, as are all books published so far for this edition
We are getting revised versions of the core rule books?
The 2024 rules revision that's been in playtest for the past year or so. #1026901431132885064
Yea, I thought it would be more confusing to tell people theres going to be 2 sets of classes they can pick from, and its not even out so they dont need to worry about it.
Will there be much change?
That's not a topic for this channel, you're best off looking in #1026901431132885064 or checking out the videos on the D&D youtube channel and articles on the D&D Beyond homepage
Okay, thank you
D&D is played in the imagination. The only thing you really need to be able to play is the rules, some dice, and a way to communicate with other people. Any other tools we use are just things that help facilitate that process and make things easier. There are lots of digital tools, like online character sheets, online battle maps, digital dice, etc. Which of these tools you will or will not use is largely up to the group you are playing with
Most commonly, people will use the website D&D Beyond for digital character sheets, and the website roll20 for online battle maps. But again, this can be group dependent.
Ooooh I see I love the online battle maps style
So you need a invitation from the DM on roll20?
Yes. Roll20 maps are hosted by a DM, so you need to join their group to be able to see them
Thats not a bad idea, r20 isnt a bad place to start but if you can find someone running a game on FoundryVTT and it looks like a good fit, I'd use that instead.
Is that a streaming channel?
Its where the game is hosted, maps and characters, its a virtual table top
Just a different program, but I think a lot better in the long run of learning over something like roll20
Oooooh I saw this on a stream its a map each player can move
Or a system that that allows you to have better mechanics right
Foundry VTT is a Virtual Table Top (VTT) which is also what Roll20 is. They are the same kind of website.
Roll20 is free to use, and has very basic features, while foundry is a premium server with much more advanced features
The mechanics are the same because they are all DnD, but it just runs smoother, theres not an upload limit, just a lot of small things that are nice.
I want to play that way thank you for sharing the knowledge
So i have like never played D&D but i am familiar with rules, I asked my friends do they want to try D&D with me. So any tips for first time DM?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Also don't forget we have a #dm-discussion channel to talk shop with fellow DMs
can you play D&D online ?_?
?tag new online
Yes you can play D&D online!
erm without video chatting ?_?
Yes - there are D&D games that are played by post (also known as PBP or text-only games).
They may be harder to find and get a spot in, but they are out there.
Are you concerned about video chatting or voice chatting? Because most online games are done on voice calls with no video. Some do use video, but that is the minority. And as UndyingNoob said, there is also the option for text based play, though that is rarer
well I got no mic or cam 🤣
I expected there to be a text based D&D somewhere
There likley is - just takes a bit more effort to find and get a spot in those games
I'm gonna be honest I wanna play this game but I don't want to read an entire essay to know how to
Cuz like I've always wanted to but DAMN there's so much
I know next to nothing
I wanna play this game but I dont have friends, mic or camera 🤣
ouch
While it is possible to learn some things as you go, you will be expected to put in at least a little effort to learn things before joining a game. At the very least, you will need a character, so learning the rules on Character Creation is important. But the more knowledge you are able to bring to the table, the smoother your game will go. If you try to play the game before learning literally anything about the rules, then assuming the other people in your group are more experienced, then they will have to spend the entire game explaining things to you. And if no one in your group is experienced, you’re just going to be lost and confused about what to do. You don’t have to memorize all of the rules beforehand, or anything like that, but if you want you and your group to have fun in your first session, you should put in at least a little effort to make it run smoothly
If reading isn't you're preferred medium for learning, there are youtube guide videos as well. I highly recommend the Handbooker Helper series, made by the cast of Critical Role:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
These videos break different aspects of the rules into bite sized pieces, about 5 minutes each.
At some point, you will need to read at least a few sections of the rules, to figure out how certain things work. That's basically unavoiable. But don't feel like you need to read the book cover to cover an memorize the whole thing
I have one of those
DAYUM
There's so many videos 😭
A lot of the videos are breakdowns of the individual classes and races. They can be helpful for you to figure out what you want to play, but if you already have an idea in mind, its not too important to learn the mechanics of a cleric if you plan to play as a monk, for example
Me who literally just created my Monk character: 😄
hi ive just recently gotten into dnd does anyone have any good recommendations of a easy class to start out with
Depends how new you are. If you are learning the mechanics and are playing at level 1, any class is easy to learn.
ive read up on how to play and the basics just trying to make my first character and the spellcasters look confusing as i dont wanna spend ages rereading spells and make anyone upset during a game
Fighters, Barbarians, Rogues, Monks
The simplest classes to learn are any that do not have access to spellcasting. So, Fighter, Barbarian, Monk, and Rogue. No class is so complicated that you can't learn it as a beginner, but if you are specifically looking for simplicity, those are the best options
ahhh okay thank you both for the help
The idea in mind is doing anything but that 😭
Hi! I’m new to dnd and I was wondering if anyone could help me learn how to make a character:3 thanks! (No pressure I can just look things up I just find talking to real people easier!!)
Then I recommend going dnd beyond’s character creator and selecting a premade character. That way you use a character that you know works and can start with learning the basics of combat and skill checks work. If you’re unsure of how to create a character sheet, i recommend going to dnd beyond’s character builder and choosing a premade character. It can be great way to study something already made to look at as you’re learning.
Thanks so much!!
There’s some really helpful video series on YT to get started and a feel for what you want. This is both for the mechanics of the game and for different character builds. If you watch through them ( most are like 5-10min max) you can then figure out exactly what you want to dive deeper in on and read just those sections.
Hi
Welcome
Ty
The Robe of Useful Items.....how long do the items last for?
Indefinitely
Once you remove a dagger patch, for example, what you’ve got is just the same as any other dagger.
does anyone have a simple, not too long video (20-30 mins preferably) to learn how to play? i just got the starterpack and im eager to learn how to play!

I’m pretty new to DnD, I’ve played a beginner 1 shot before, but otherwise I’m still new
I’ll have a look at the links above later.

I know that this server can’t help me with product issues but I hope that maybe some folks can say that they did or did not experience this:
I just purchased the Essentials Kit from a local game store. All of the online listings and video reviews I saw showed that it should come with some codes to scan to unlock material on DnD Beyond. But my box didn’t come with that despite it being sealed? Has this happened to anyone else?
Those haven’t included unlock codes for a few years now.
Oh, that’s really disappointing.
Hello, I'd like for someone to explain how do bonus actions work. Are there only a limited amount I could use between long rests? Like spell slots
You get one bonus action per turn, but unless the feature/spell/ability/item that uses your Bonus Action says you only get so many per long rest, you can have as many bonus actions as you have turns. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
For example, healing Word is a level 1 spell that uses Bonus Action to cast. You get a bonus action every turn, but have a limited number of spell slots you can expend in a long rest.

hiii, im new to dnd and im dming a game. i've created a custom enemy, but the move set is incredibly basic. Basically, the enemy attacks with a dagger but i was wondering if its allowed for me to change the damage from a 1d4 to a 1d8 because it makes more sense within the story (too long to explain)
is that like totally against the rules or can i do it
If you’re creating a homebrew enemy you can do anything you want with it
ok hype
If you're new to D&D, I would recommend taking a look at already created monster statblocks.
You can make things a lot easier if you use an existing statblock but change the appearance.
And also adapting the type of damage to make more sense! Things get really confusing when the tree’s branch deals lightning damage
Just keep in mind how changing the damage from a 1d4 to a 1d8 will impact a fight.
If the player characters are level 1, they'll probably have about 8 HP.
So a single 8 result, and a player character downed. If it's a crit, then that's the end of the pc.
Hello all. Can someone tell me how dice rolls work? Like if it says 2d6 is it that I roll 2 d6 or is it 2 times the value shown or 2 plus the value shown?
Awesome. Thank you.

@idle plank Saw your question in the discussion channel. The Actions in Combat section of the Basic Rules is likely what you're looking for. It describes the main actions you can take in combat (shocking, I know). For the most part, the majority of things your character can do takes an action, but there are many exceptions.
Was there anything else you were having trouble with?
how many rounds is 1 minute in game???/
A round is 6 seconds
ohhh ok
and 1 round would be everyone who can take an action takes an action???
like if 5 people use their actions that would be 6 seconds of in game time?
1 round is when everybody in the initiative order has taken a turn, yes
ok ty!!!!
Turns in a round are generally considered to be happening simultaneously, but we resolve them in a specific order cause game
yeah just had to make sure bc what someone told me just sounded so bad for certain spells that i would get
said 1 minute was basically 1 round
Information on this is in the Basic Rules, which I suggest you read
Section on combat
ok ty

checking out the resources in the message above mine right now
sup
man i gotta get on pc i hate mobile discord 😭
Is there a good way to learn DND indivisually? Should i read books or watch videos? Maybe a mix of the two?
Check out #learn-to-play as well as this channel's pins! They have links to the free basic rules as well as the Handbooker Helper video supplement
Thank you that helped a lot
I'm ready to clash and rumble with some new faces 💪
Your friend may be correct - there are spells with casting times longer than one action or bonus action(during your 6 second turn in a round).
Tiny hut, for example, has a casting time of one minute or can be cast as a ritual (which takes even longer but costs no spell slots)
Some spells you would use more for out of combat situations. Like tiny hut for a safe space to sleep while traveling or in enemy territory.
Or, if they have a long duration, you might cast them before you go into combat knowing you might need it. Like Conjure Minor Elemental or even Find Familiar
hey I was wondering where new people find groups as a european to play with have not played dnd ever in m life have played other roleplay games (not online I must add) I have basic understanding of dnd and all that obviosly don't know every spell in the game as I have not created characters for all of the classes

There's some general advice here for finding games in-person:
#learn-to-play message
What class should I choose... I'm brand new to dnd
Is there a standard fee or amount for paid games?
It will vary from person to person and place to place.
Pick whatever interests you the most! Would you like to play in melee, ranged, cast spells, have a versatile skill set etc?
I've been playing dnd for a few years now. I've played warlocks and clerics. But still don't have a grasp of the role of spell casters if you get what I mean.
Picking a shadow sorcerer atm, other than burst dmg with the hound, any tips on how to navigate through their spells?
For example , one local shop charges $5 USD. It’s in an open space in the shop and is focusing in mostly one shots.
While another local shop charges $40 or more. They provide private rooms, different themed rooms to choose from, and wil run personalized home campaigns for customers.
Oh... I asked some friends on a call and decided on a bard
Damage is good, but you should also focus on buffing your friends, controlling the battlefield and out of combat utility.
For example, if you use Grease to make a bad guy drop prone and give advantage on the Fighter's attacks, they might end up dealing more damage than you could with a same level Magic Missile.
Each spellcasting class fulfills a different role in the same way fighters, barbarians, rogues, and monks do, even though they’re all martial classes.
Thanks
@true musk so what is the role here in your opinion
Without getting into specifics the shadow sorcerer focuses on de-buffing and damaging a single target through the hound. So you can lean into that by choosing spells that do more de-buffing or choose spells that affect multiple targets to cover some that weakness.
For more details, you can ask in #character-discussion

Hello there
Welcome to the server!
Im new too
Hi, I'm new to D&D and would learn how to play
I started learning 2 days ago
I started learning yesterday
i don't even know what I'm doing🥲
I can't figure out how to create the character using the character sheet and the handbook. I have the essentials kit and a pdf of the handbook.
You could start with #learn-to-play
I just made a character on beyond and thats it
I've probably spend a good three hours watching videos on how to make a character, but I'm still really confused
Which parts are you confused by?
pretty much all of it
