If a character uses a stat roll, they don't have to use profeciency right? Like, make a con roll.
If they are making a con save and they are proficient they would add it
How would I go about balancing a monster that is generally harder to be weaker for lower level campaigns? I want to set up a one-shot dungeon for two players and I'm throwing around having a Griffon as either the final boss or their means of escape depending on how they interact with it. If things go south I want them to be able to kill it with some difficulty as the last encounter of the game. I'm completely new to DMing and pretty much D&D as a whole so I haven't really had a lot of experience with any of this.
Gotcha my b
All g
Silly q, dragonborn.....Draconic Ancestry, there's different colours, but some have the same element, skill like Black \ Copper and Blue \ Bronze
Are there anything else that's different?
nope
Odd question but, how Lengthy should a Character's Backstory be?
Aslong as you want it to, best to keep it to 3 short paragraphs though where your from, how you got your skills/powers and why you’re out adventuring.
Hmm
Try not to make it to powerful and grounded in your DMs world
How does 466 Words sound?
Sorry... I'm the kind of guy who writes too much.
Well, a Writer.
Heck, I don't even know what can be defined as too much but usually even this message can be considered ‘Too Much.’
Your DM may want a condensed version depends on the campaign
Hmm, understandable.
So, basically how you write your Character Sheets depend on the Campaign?
You could put it in a google doc and share it in #character-discussion for feed back
Yes your character needs to have some ties to the campaign world
If youd like, you can send it to me and I can take a look.
Can someone explain the ability thing? I put 14 in strength, I then have a racial of +2, then it says +3 modifier, so that'll make it a total of 19?, Wisdom has a +1 modifier but it's still 10 total
How do I find out what these modifiers are and do they add to your ability score??
You have a score and a modifier.
Racial bonuses add to the score.
So you had 14 from stat generation +2 from your species, meaning you now have 16 Strength.
The +3 is your modifier. Every two points above 10 gives you a +1 modifier. You add this modifier to any roll that uses your strength. So a melee attack would be 1d20 + 3 str + your prof bonus (if proficient with the weapon).
Oh ok I misread that modifier bit after 10, 😂 now I get it.
With 10 wisdom, you should only have a +0 Wisdom modifier.
That's correct, I misread it all thank you
Hello how can I play?
Question: How can someone on Mobile play a DnD game?
with dndb you can
If you have your character on D&D Beyond, you have it join the campaign and your dice rolls there will be reported to the campaign log. You can use Discord for chat, voice or text. Most virtual tabletops will be difficult but you can have another player move your token when needed.
I see
Welcome! If you're familiar with the Basic Rules take a look at #looking-for-players for games that may be recruiting now.
how does this game work?
I just want to start playing and I don't know about anything rn
1st of welcome
ok so I'm quite new to DND lol
dnd is a very time heavy hobbie/game/whatever so there alot to learn but its easy enough
but I have a group of friends who invited me to play 1 time and I liked it
well you have some knowleage already thats good
How do I play-
first creating a character
you can use multpule things like dndb, roll20 and more but there the most popular
Should I make it after I got into a game?
I'm actually going to create a character who's a clown bard named dimples lol
depends on if the dm has rules he wants followed
but uselly you can make a character before joining one
Honestly, I don't even know how does the power system works .w.
I can give you links?
ok ill dm you and help from there if thats cool
Oki!
Thanks!!
i sent you a dm dajura

The links above can help you get started. Pick a race and class, read the section on ability scores and use this set of numbers: 15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8 (the standard array method). When you're done with your character share what you've got in #character-discussion for some feedback and further help.
Odd question but, is it possible for players from completely opposite timezones to play a DnD game?
I mean, I know it's possible, but would anyone be willing to play a game at 3pm - 3am?
Is it fine if I (a newbie) ask a lot of questions to the dm about stuff I don't understand?
If you play with the east coast dms you can get a game at noon for them and 9pm for you
Ah, I see.
Yes, an questions you have should be asked to your dm and you should never think you're annoying them.
I see!
so after I read a lot of these stuff, should I try to find a game now?
Talking is part of the gig
im playing with people from est and im from aest (14 hours diff) so yeah
uh?
yep
Sure if you're looking to join a game hop over to https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008 and check some out. Look for timeslot and style of play and make sure they match your style
Oki!
But for now I'll bid you all a goodnight
You have to read a whole lot of the handbooks before you play, huh?
No, that's insane, learn what the first 2 levels of your class do
Ah, I see.
no but yes , no but yes
you do need some knowleadge but you dont need alot
Hmm, I'm guessing I could just ask the DM about the crud I don't know, correct?
yeah
Well, what are the Information I do need?
just the basics on how to play
You should at least know what ability scores are, and how to use your skills, how to do attacks, and the basics of spellcasting if that's relevant to your character. Class features too.
Like a player of a rogue should learn about how their sneak attack works.
Alright then.
Also, odd question but... How exactly does the roleplaying work in DnD?
It's a conversation where you pretend to be a fictional character in a situation described by the DM. You make choices and decide how your character acts. Sometimes dice are rolled.
Specifically, conversations.
If a DM make a Barista say Hi to the Party - do all of them speak, or do DMS usually choose which one of them speaks.
you dont what the dumb barb trying to talk to a smarter person (unless its funny)
thats up to you usually
It's up to the players who speaks and who doesn't, assuming their characters are all in the same scene.
Ah, I see.
after I dm these party, I just wait until they answered?
is it to get into a party or a text based game
Say, if a DM just puts all Party Members in one scene - like, a Bar. - and that's basically it, do the Players just... Well, do and act however they want - like, the Rogue sneaks up on a Noble and steals his pants, meanwhile a Wizard is in corner surrounded by common folk as he does magic tricks going “Abacadabra!” and turning a Goose into Gold in front of them.
Or does the DM hand over to them a specific kind of action within the Bar.
Im not sure, Im still confused because I just started .w.
Follow whatever instructions are in the recruitment post. It can take time to match to a game.
oki
yeah pretty much
...the latter, the former - or both?
both
...how does a DM even manage that?
it depends on what happened before
Can a DM even manage that?
yep
if you fought already and a bar scene comes along most time its for rp or a break to set up the next thing, if its the start you might be investergating something or a bar will happen, who knows (beside the dm)
Ah, I see.
How do DnD games usually start?
As in - Roleplay-wise
Do the Party Members meet up, or do they just arrive at a bar already knowing each other?
my one started in a bar where we interduce our characters and alittle backstory
Ah - I see.
What exactly do players do with their character sheets?
Like, is it all just in their Hands, does the DM have all the character sheets, can the players see each other's character sheets?
if its a text based one you can give the dm or a bot them, same with voice. the dm see them all i think but you cant see others
depends massively on the individual campaign
again depends, but generally each player will have their own sheet, the DM will be allowed to see it, and often it'll be shown to other players as well
Ah, I see.
eh, depends. there's no rules on that
I personally prefer where everyone can see everyone's sheet.
it is a team based game after all
on my one we gave a avrea them so yeah i didnt know that side of it
But as per the roleplay experience.
Wouldn't it be more immersive if the Players didn't see each other's character sheets and just well... Talked?
yeah
but if your character doesnt know what there characters do on first glance
people seeing thier characters sheets is for more what the character is
I see.
the character sheet is far more than the roleplay side
I have some questions on hiding and passive perception.
I think I understand it correctly but just want to check(no pun).
If someone is hiding in an area or room and a PC walks into that area, does the DM automatically call for a Passive Wisdom(Perception) check?
In that room then, is the check only called for once or each time they enter the room or multiple times when they are in the room to notice if they find someone who is hiding.
Without their asking to search the room.
How do i calculate spellcasting modifier
Depends on your class
Spell save DC is 8 + spellcasting modifier + proficiency bonus. Proficiency bonus increases with level, starting with +2 at level 1.
Spell attack bonus is your spellcasting modifier + proficiency bonus. You add that to whatever you rolled on a d20 to determine your attack and whether it hits or misses.
In your case you'd use wisdom as your spellcasting modifier
You went on another topic
I want to calc my spellcasting modifier
You gave me math homework that requires my spellcasting modifier
Your spellcasting modifier as Druid is Wisdom, you calculate it by looking at your score (the higher number)
If your score is 10, your modifier is 0, and every 2 points in your score increases your modifier by 1
So
Score 12 = +1 modifier
Score 14 = +2 modifier
Etc. to a maximum of 20 score = +5 modifier
Wisdom modifier + Profiency bonus
Thx
I really appreciate the support for newcomers
(Even if i ask the same question 15 times)
Proficiency bonus isn't part of your spellcasting modifier by itself. It's just added to your spell save DC and spell attacks
Just to decrease confusion WHO THE HEck IS DC?
Difficulty Class, basically a number that your target needs to meet to avoid certain spells
As an example; Fireball
All creatures in its area need to make a Dexterity Save meeting or beating your spell save DC to take only half damage from the spell
Kool
Hi all
And to clarify, any check usually has a DC, not just spells. Basically it's the score you need to get with your roll + modifiers to succeed in what you were trying to do
Well luckily in general you dont need to worry aobut that part!
You just need to tell the DM what you want to do, and they'll tell you what skill you use, and then tell you if you succeeded (Usually the DM is the only one to know the DC for most non-spell checks anyways)
DC is just the number to equal or beat on a roll.
Basically
If DC + roll = requirement
You dodge your 500th fireball
DC is the requirement, not something you add to anything
Last night started a game of stormwreck isle with my kids lol, what a mess it was first time trying to DM after many years of not playing, I can definitely say it was an eventful evening hahahahahaha
Hello everyone, I'm gonna be a DM for the first time with friends who are also playing for the first time. We are going to use the stormwreck campaign. Any suggestions to help make it enjoyable ? And help me out learn the ways of a DM haha
try and let all the ideas of the player run wild (with in reason)
somebody wants to throw something in the environment at somebody let them
Yeah I plan on that, only major rule I have is just anything is up for debate, you want to do x but I don't debate with me and see if we can find a middle ground
fair fair. cant let them just do anything thats not in there power to do so
Yeah true true can't let them become gods unless it's planned haha
true
Boiz...
Are you supposed to make a Character Sheet before finding a Game or after finding a Game?
Either works but game table first in most cases
And either way, what is this?
you can have ideas and even partially filled in sheets before a campaign, but do not force a character into a setting where it doesnt fit
Crap, I can't send screenshots apparently.
if its just words we can still help
Is it possible to have a Character sheet that's flexible enough to be played on different campaigns or no?
Generally characters are not transferable between campaigns without DM approval
That's less a matter of your character sheet being flexible and more a matter of the campaigns being flexible
There are specific styles of play, such as West Marches and Adventurer's League, that facilitate that
Ah, so pretty much, I'd need to have Different Sheets for different Games.
I see... Wait, so if I did find a game, it's not like we'd head straight into the DnD session since my Character Sheet would require a little talk-out with the DM, correct?
Usually yes
Are DMs usually generous enough to include a Newbie into their Campaigns?
I’d argue most are beginner friendly, but don’t explicitly advertise themselves as so. As such, it’s always good to ask
I see.
So, now I pretty much know the basics of the Game - should I look for a game now?
If you feel you’re ready, sure! On this server there’s #find-a-game to help you find a group to play with
I see, thanks.
Are Virtual DnD games usually Mobile Friendly?
How do people play dnd
Like i wanna start playing it or at least learn and some day play it with my family and maybe even with my kids someday, like my mom introduced MTG to me when i was 5yrs
dnd is a very time heavy game/hobbie so be ready
hey im also new to dnd and me and my boyfriend would like to join a dnd session/group but idk where to start lol (online)
do you have an idea of what to do in dnd. the both of you

Hello everyone do you need to buy books or will DMs have everything?
if in rl no but for virtual you might depands if the dm has the book
DMs usually have books or the materials but if you want special races or subclasses having your own copy does not hurt
Question do you get some sort of digital code if you buy a physical copy of a book?
Generally not.
💀
It's not so dissimilar from buying any other book. You don't automatically get the audiobook or e-reader versions free..
I have a little grasp but Im still searching for a game rn .w.
Hello! I’ve just been chosen to be dm for my group of first time players (I am a new player too), does anyone have any tips on how to get started? I’m debating either running a pre-made one shot/short campaign just so we all get a feel for it, but I have no clue how to actually do the dm’ing stuff
Ok, from a beginner to another, run a pre made short campaign first. I would recommend Frozen sick by critical role for a first timer GM. The campaign shall be anywhere between 2-6 sessions depending on how pedantic the players are. I started for my first one a homebrew one, and now I am crying myself over drawing maps.
Also if you have time you could look a bit through the DM handbook but to be honest even the Player handbook may suffice for a short one
I feel like starting with a session just working on mechanics is a good idea- Dicerolls and familiarizing yourself with characters etc. is a good way to start… Get to know the nuts and bolts before you try to add a story or context or actually starting a campaign
I hear Peril in Pinebrook is a good starter.
Would it be possible to fix my lfp post? I accedently put am instead of pm on it. This is the correct time stamp <t:1718233200:f>. Sorry.
Please do not ping the whole Moderator team unless the Server is burning down (aka Spam waves or a Raid). It is also highly ill advised to delete your post prematurely as we do not reset LFG timers for deleted posts.
Yo guys I've learned much about DnD but never really played a game. Any absolute basic rules I need to know?
Like is it true for every round I only get one action and movement?
Check this channel’s pins and #learn-to-play , which have links to the free basic rules and Handbooker Helper video supplement
As for your other question, during combat in your turn you have:
- 1 action
- your movement
- 1 bonus action (if you have an ability that uses a bonus action)
Additionally, during the entire round you have 1 optional reaction, usually taken in response to a specific trigger
DnD, like many games of its type, does have a lot of rules. you dont need to know all of them but there is a decent amount, like a how ability checks, attacks and saving throws work, the basic actions you can take, and how your character specific things work, like your race and class.
but there are a lot of ressources out there that help you learn step by step
and many DMs are willing to teach new players, provided they are willing to do some of the work on their own
I know about the saves and checks and basic principles. I've listen to a campaign podcast and learned what they did. The only problem was that I never had any first hand experience myself. I was just looking to see if I missed anything that is worth knowing

This guide (https://howtogm.guide/) may be of help! My emphatic recommendation is to do a one-shot or short campaign rather than trying to create one from scratch. Running the game is plenty to juggle on its own; making a campaign is another, and you don't need to add to the difficulty right up front.
The above guide does refer to an adventure, but you could use the same framework for how to prepare for any adventure you like!
If you have any questions or need help understanding something in the basic rules please feel free to ask for clarification here.
Passive checks are not called for. They are for the DM's reference so that a player might notice a thing without having to roll. Say you have a small detail in a room that would not be noticed for a Perception check under 14. One character has a passive score of 15. You could say to that player, "What you notice is..." without asking for a roll. Passive perception is especially useful when the DM is trying to sneak up on the party; calling for a Perception check may tip them off that something is to be found.
to add to that, typically you would roll a Dexterity (Stealth) check for the hiding creature. If the result equals or exceeds the passive Perception of the character, they remain hidden. Otherwise, they are found.
You wouldn’t call for a passive perception check. A players passive perception is a flat value used as a general marker of their current awareness of their surroundings at any given moment. What you’re probably thinking of is just calling for a perception check, which represents an active effort to perceive something.
Does anyone know how to use owl ear rodeo
as for when to make the check, typically one should have the result of a prior check hold until circumstances change. So if the character leaves and re-enters the room shortly after, I wouldn't roll another check unless something else about the situation changed.
To build on what razorwing's answer, this video by the animed spellbook provides a visual representation of how stealth mechanics work: https://youtu.be/XgUEm6_yXCs
Also, going in and out of a room wouldn’t repeat checks. A check is generally supposed to represent the best effort of the player under the given circumstances and/or time pressure. Simply re-entering the room isn’t going to change their ability to notice something significantly
Lots of folks do, but they have a Discord and a YouTube channel that might be handy. We also have #third-party for discussion of various tools like Owlbear Rodeo.
Thanks but hopefully I won't🙂. I guess I could have used help creating my character with the many races, classes, and equipment. As well as what to expect when leveling up.
Thx
The yt Vedio is outdated and can’t find discord
Google owlbear rodeo discord.
I did
It's the first Reddit result.
Oh the reddit
it's not outdated. The rules for stealth haven't changed since the upload date.
It says its outdated
The leveling up process is going to depend on if Experience Points or Milestone are used.
- XP, as it is commonly known, is where you accumulate points and that determines when you level up.
- Milestone, is where you automatically level up at certain points in a campaign.
Which you use is going to depend on the campaign you are playing and what the DM has decided to use.
Kool good to know. There much for me to learn but I won't bother you all with my simple questions. I'll come back with more complex questions. Thank you all
This link takes you to the Owlbear youtube channel and the 5 most recent videos going over how to use it were made in less than a month. https://www.youtube.com/@OwlbearRodeo/videos
There's a lot of rules, but they do contain a lot of the necessary info, so that would be my first destination. If you can't find the info, though, or are confused by what you read there, don't be afraid to ask!
Hopefully nothing should be outdated.
Thank-you, so the check is just run once even if they leave and re enter a room.
that's just how I think is best to do it. I think it's consistent with guidance in the PHB and DMG, but it's not a rule per se.
Asking about the basics of dnd is what this channel is for
We also have channels for more complex questions, such as #character-discussion , #optimization , #dm-discussion , and #dnd-rules just to name a few.
Nice thx guys
i dm'd for the first time
i think i did ok everyone had fun but i think i made a few mistakes.
- How important is movement? I feel like i wasnt very accurate with it during movement lol
2.Am i supposed to roll for like if someone hits an enemy? Like if someone shoots a bow is there supposed to be a chance it misses?
Movement can be very important if you're playing on a grid. Some folks use theater of the mind (AKA imagination) to be more loosey-goosey with movement.
And yes, many attacks have a roll to see if they hit. Some hit automatically but the target can make a saving throw to reduce (or nullify) the damage.
When the player makes an attack they should make the attack roll, and then you compare the roll with their modifiers to the enemy AC, and let them know if the attack hits
Have a look at the info here

You didn’t set your character share settings to public. Also sharing character sheets specifically may be better for #character-discussion
Hey guys, me and my friend need 2 players. He's new to dming and is cool if someone else is the dm or he'll be dm. But it would be really cool if we had someone experienced that could help.

It can be a great starting point but the rules are not 1 to 1. They had to make functional changes for the mechanics to work in a video game. That said, it's an excellent game and can be a nice way to learn concepts common to 5E. The video has some great information that can help you start.
Someone host a one shot
me and my partner are itching to play
you can check #looking-for-players to see if anyone's running a game that interests you ^^
I've been looking but no one shots yet
Hello
How many stat points do you have starting out?
depends on your ability score generation method, you can read here for the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
It's often best to start with the standard array: 15 - 14 - 13 - 12 - 10 - 8
Yes.
The standard array is a widely accepted way of making your ability scores. If you get a better option in an actual game feel free to take it, but it's a simple way to rank your abilities from best to worst.
Wizards and sorcerers often put the 8 in Strength, for instance - they don't need it.
when can i as an dm say that someone can multiclass?
is it lvl 1 next lvl up multi class?
instead of taking another level in lets say barbarian, they take one level in another class
so the overall character levels goes up by one, but the barbarian level stays the same
thanks
Hello, does anyone know an app to play music and sfx?
And if there is a collection of sfx to download?
you can either use a soundboard, internal or third party, or the Youtube activity
I've used https://tabletopaudio.com/ for a lot of streams. :)
I know a lot of folks also use https://syrinscape.com/. Enjoy!
Do I have to buy the books? Or is there a way to get the campaigns via beyond?
you can either buy the books, or some groups have content share enabled, which lets you access them
You only need the campaign books if you're the DM, so only then do you need to buy the adventure campagin book.
What are some fun unique builds? My first Character was a aarakocran monk and it was alot of fun but it was also a little boring, so what are some fun builds?

You still need to follow the server rules.
Hello. I'm new here and new to Dnd. Looking forward to playing and learning more about Dnd
What exactly do DnDers mean when they mention Homebrew?
Homebrew is player made content not published by Wizards of the Coast
Ah, I see.
Hi everyone I’m extremely new to DND but have always wanted to learn and play hope to meet and be friends with all of you
welcome! if you need any help learning the rules feel free to ask here :]

Fr
Thx
the basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules) are free online and they are all you really need to get started playing
np!
Ama read it
how do I homebrew a dnd class? I mean yeah I can write my own in a paper, but is there a way to use it on dndbeyond??
dndbeyond has a homebrew creator, https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew
but i don't think you can make a class, only subclasses
There are tools for home brewing subclasses on DDB but not full classes, iirc
ahh is there any other place where you can like create your own class to play with??
Not if you want to use it on D&D Beyond, afaik
If you want to use it somewhere else, then it'll depend on what you're using
Hello..
I'm new to... I'm learning with my cousins

how come i cant post in the looking for channels?
is it because i have to go via the command?
Yes
ight
Take your time reading the instructions and the monodrone will set up the post for you.
Nice! If you’d like feedback on it or just want to share, feel free to share them in #character-discussion (or #optimization if you want more specific build advice)
Theoretically, how could I convince my DM to let me make a pipe bomb? - follow up question how much damage would it do and how big would the radius be?
You ask them and if they say no, you accept they've said no
If they say yes, that'd be a question for #homebrew as to how to make rules for them
Step one, ask them if you can spend some money and downtime on building a pipe bomb.
Step two, use the stats for dynamite on page 100 of the TDCSR, or cut the damage and cost in half if youre in the lower levels.
Thanks man really appreciate
what have I done
As a dnd newcomer, does anyone struggle with feeling like you can't get into dnd groups because of limited technology/not having proper experience? I bring this up because I was very close to being in a dnd campaign but when they noticed I had no laptop, I was told it would slow things down. (Which is valid) but is it hard to find experience players who will take on newbies without the proper technology requirements 🙂 just asking because its a bit discouraging as a broke player who doesn't have a PC
you could try local areas or tell the dm that you dont have laptop and hope
England doesn't have a dnd scene I'm afraid 😢 and if there is, it's not anywhere near my area so it's hard because I genuinely do want to play but I don't have a PC, only phone 🙂
Yes it does
AL is active in UK, primarily in the major cities (just like anywhere else in the world) and you can generally put together a group in GMT online
If you're in a small town or village, you will have a harder time finding an in person game, but don't dismiss online play out of hand. You can totally play by phone
For some reason I havant had any luck! Tbf I live in an area of old ppl so it's not like their gonna know about dnd 🥴 but yeah, I feel like most DM's won't take non computer players for some reason, oh well 🙂
I don't know where you are, but some places to check out D&D in major cities
- Southampton: Board in the City
- Birmingham: Waylands Forge
- London: Dark Star Games, Forbidden Planet
- Oxford: The Game Master store
DMs will generally accept you if you have the hardware to use the tools they run their game with, look for play by post or theatre of the mind games
Thanks broski :)) your a real one
Mine is like the one ppl barely even know 😭
If multiple skills use proficiency bonus, do I subtract from the same source when I use them?
Ex: My proficiency bonus is 3 and I have skills A and B. I use skill A and B once. Does that mean I only have one proficiency charge left? Or do I have two charges left of both spell A and B?
There's no proficiency charge system in D&D
Your proficiency bonus is the bonus you add to ability checks made using a skill you're proficient in
your proficiency bonus just gets added, there's no cost to it
also you seem to be getting spells and skills confused
Ah, ok! So if a skill says "You can do so a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus", I have "charges" equal to my prof bonus
Yea, I just misspoke when I said spell and skill, I meant to say abilities (like circle of stars druid "star map")
With you now. Just to clarify, that's the proficiency bonus based on your character level (starting at 2 for level 1) and doesn't relate to how many skills you have proficiency in.
yeah, abilities is the proper term
yes. you can use that specific ability a number of times equal to your prof bonus
Understood! And to be super clear, different abilities that use proficiency dont interfere with one another?
should i put both my skill points on deception and persuasion or rather just pick one of these two options to use every time
correct
huh?
i have 2 skill points i can use and i was thinking of putting them in deception and persuasion but idk if i should
im guessing i should choose one of those two instead
no i was thinking of using the other point on something else
ah, okay
it's entirely up to you
deception and persuasion can overlap, but they'll often be seperately useful
but im not sure how the game works i guess, like in bg3 whenever you had a dialogue you got choices to either persuade or intimidate or decieve, is there a point in using both decieve and persuade here or just go full on in
well if they will be seperately useful then okay
Up to you. What's your character like? My Reylana can't lie, but has Persuasion. Zola on the other hand never met a truth they couldn't twist and has Deception.
in my experience you don't have that freedom nearly as much in actual dnd
well im thinking of making a manipulative bard which does both depending on the context ig
If I had to pick one, I'd take Persuasion. What's the other skill you might take if not Deception?
investigation/insight
Insight and Persuasion can get you a good way. Use one to find the levers to manipulate a person, the other to persuade them that it's in their own best interests. Investigation can do something similar, but relies on more than just the person.
well i prefer deception over persuasion, whats better with that
You skip the first step, you get in with a good lie and move on before they figure it out. Sometimes telling someone a "necessary" lie to get their cooperation is seen as less manipulative than deliberately preying on a vulnerability.
Think of the difference between lying to someone about why you want access to an area and slipping them a little bribe, and Sherlocking them, deducing they have a sick child, and persuading them that the bribe is needed for that child's survival - but they only get it if they help you.
multiclassing is very dependent on how you use it, and I wouldn't recommend it for a new player
this seems like a newbie problem as I am not very tech smart. I have set up my webcam over my dice tray/bowl . the dice are readable but the light is poor and if I bring a lamp near the bowl it fixs the light issue but it causes a glare on the dice making them unreadable. any suggestions?
Adjust the angle of the lamp, or put something near it so the dice are illuminated indirectly. A book, a box, ideally something flat.
Maybe try folding a piece of plain paper to make the dice tray into a lightbox.
Thank you I will try that.
may anyone send an example of a bard character?
so thatI can get a better idea of what they do, and what they can't do
(in battle)
I'm not sure a bard character sheet will give you any more insight than just looking at the bard rules
The free basic rules have a section for the bard class, I’d recommend starting there. In fact, it’d probably be more helpful since it takes you through the abilities level by level
If you want a rough idea of what they can do in combat, they’re full casters (so you probably won’t be picking up weapons much, and almost certainly won’t be going into melee), with a focus on buff and debuff spells and a lot of versatility from class features
This server doesn’t host games, but we do have a channel dedicated to finding tables to play at: #find-a-game
As for learning the rules, check out this channel’s pins as well as #learn-to-play which have links to the free basic rules and the Handbooker Helper video supplement.
Thank you.
Hi I'm new, can someone help me understand how do I find a group to play with considering my circumstances:
I can only play online
I cannot use a camera or microphone but can listen to others and reply in text
I have never played D&D nor do I know anyone who has, and I also don't know anyone who's interested
I myself am very interested in the game and want to learn through friendly online text interactions with a group
Any help would be appreciated!
look in #looking-for-players for text based games or play by post games
if you don't know the rules, the free basic rules are in #learn-to-play. You dont need to know them all by heart but having basic knowledge is helpful
is there no artificer in 5E?
there is but you the book for it
the book?
Eberron: Rising from the Last War or Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, it's in both
i forgot what they were called lol
Wha
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a DnDBeyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
so you cant use the class wthout buying the book
Not all options are available in the free basic rules.
Think of it as you buy books to access additional content and rules to supplement what comes in the free basic rules
Correct; all rules outside the free basic rules are sold in book form
That's how TTRPGs work
I mean people who make the content do need to make a living...
yeah
Almost every single TTRPG, not just D&D, sells its rules in book form
Well there goes my plan for an elf artificer
wait are sub races also affected by thiis
All game content outside the basic rules comes in books you have to pay for
i was wondering why dnd beyond had like one subrace per race
The basic rules include
- 12 of the 13 classes
- 1 subclass per class
- The species found in the Player's Handbook
- For those that have it, one subrace per relevant option
and you get 1 feat
An optional game rule for allowing further customisation of your character
Best not to worry about it if you're fresh to the game
yeah
This was not an expected hurdle. I need to rethink my characters
well one of them works
I wouldn't get too married to a character concept until after you've got a handle of the game rules
TBH, I wouldn't even start forming character ideas until after you've found a campaign
I got a campaign actually
Its startin next week
just trying to make a good character for it
Then give the rules a bit more of a dive and that should help
if this helps you could use dice cloud ( if the dm allows it)
You would still need to have the rules for the class/subclass/race, etc. to build it in Dice Cloud (if the group allows it)
Which is why we have the handy ?books command

Sure - but someone (you and your community taxes) bought it.
The point is not all D&D content is free - the creators and folks that support them (company) would like to be paid for their efforts.
i didnt buy dicecloud? (its free)
Noob is pointing out that in order to use dicecloud (effectively) you still need access to the rules themselves
D&D Beyond is equally free as a character builder tool like Dicecloud, but again, you have to pay for the content
Advantage of DDB is the content is integrated into the character sheet automatically
and can then connect to Avrae and used in Discord along with DnDBeyond's shared game log
how come we cant share pictures here?
Although Dice CLoud also works with Avrae too
yeah i wass think that
Because it's not useful to a text-channel focused on discussion
But if you must share an image, use an image sharing service and share the link making sure to follow the server rules and providing text context for what the link is.
How do people create characters? I have been using dnd beyond but it is quite limited in options for race and stuff unless you buy like 300$ worth of books, is there a special book just for character creation I can use or is it just a matter of knowing all the race abilities and class Info
Your options are going to be limited unless you pay for more, get access through a campaign, or your game allows you to homebrew
The free options are the ones in the basic rules/SRD
So what books would I need to have all the Info I need for making a character?
@lyric fjord This is a newcomers channel, not a general discussion channel. Please stay on topic. For promoting things you've made, you want #dnd-advertisements
I wasn't promoting anything and I was asking a question here as a newcommer..... my program isnt public
you misread my post
It's spread around. The PHB is the primary book. But there are also character options in Tasha's, Xanathar's, SCAG, monsters of the multiverse, fizbans and others
Programming tools for D&D is not a newcomers topic
Ok thanks
that was a continuation of this question.
"how come we cant share pictures here?"
and I was replying to another moderator
That is also not a D&D newcomers topic
Questions about server rules/policies should be posed in #moderator-support
If in doubt about what channel to use, we have id:browse
Hi I see people using dyno commands that aren't on the FAQ list ( #frequently-asked-questions message)
Is there a list of them somewhere, because I'm not the best at explanations
Silly q time again....reading the PHB and I never do Spellcasters, magic in any game (usually I like the Tanky atheistic) to understand the spells table......for example Bard, at lvl 1 it knows 4 spells? But can only cast 1 of those 4 spells or 2 of those spells up to 2 times at spell lvl 1????
The list is out of date and we're working on updating it once we've locked down the commands we're going to use
And this too would be a #moderator-support question
How spellcasting works varies between spellcasting classes
Taking bard as an example
Oh I see thank you
At level 1, they know two cantrips (these can be cast without limit) and four spells
Those four spells can be of any level you have spell slots for
At level 1 a bard has 1st level spell slots, two of them specifically
What this means is that a bard can 'spend' one of these first level spell slots to 'power' a spell of first level
At higher level, you can use a spell slot to power a spell of that level or lower
For example, at 5th level a bard has:
- Four spell slots of 1st level
- Three spell slots of 2nd level
- Two spell slots of 3rd level
They could cast a first level spell using a 1st level spell slot, a 2nd level spell slot or a 3rd level spell slot
Sometimes casting a spell with a higher level spell slot (referred to as 'upcasting') gives the spell more potency
Oh I see, I thought the lvl spells had to be used at the appropriate spell slot level
Makes for very interesting choices
Me again, should I be looking at having spells from the same "school/ type"????
Unless you're a wizard, school rarely matters
Depends on you’re class/subclass, some like arcane trickster have to choose from certain schools
And even as a wizard, it doesn't matter much. The 8 school based subclasses give you a small boost to spells of the matching school, but nothing that should stop you from picking other schools
Is there some text or essay or anything i can read that explains dnd to a T? Like in detail of absoulutely everything cuz if its not in utmost crystal clear detail i will likely not understand it
🤷🏽♀️ help me ig but someone said I can go to a different chat to get advice

?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
You can roll digital dice online for free
?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
There are 6 different types of dice that you need minimum, each with a different number of sides, so trying to "make" them would be very difficult
Dam!!!!
Phew i knew its gonna be complex but still DAM!
But idc i'll get a hang of it!
Watch the video tutorials linked above.
It helps if you are specific on what you need help with.
So let's start from the beginning. Have you read the free basic rules?
@true musk I read some of them I went to a Fan fest in Dallas so they told me to start with making my character.
Do you understand the rules regarding character creation?
Particularly how different classes are dependent on specific ability scores to be effective.
For example, how Barbarians generally need a good strength score to use their abilities effectively.
Yes someone helped me with that and I did the rest online.
Great!
- Do you want feedback on the character?
- Help on exploring your options on finding a game?
- Help on figuring out what type of campaign is right for you?
Feedback on the character
Alright do you know how to share your character sheet?
Nope
How did you make your character sheet, paper and pencil, dnd beyond, roll 20, or some other platform?
Dndbeyond and used dice to make the character strengths and stuff
What character did you make?
High elf
Go to the "My characters" section on dnd beyond. Click the "Edit" button, then in the "Home" tab, scroll down and under "Character Privacy" set it to public.
Once you do, your character sheet will have a share button which you can share it on the server with a link such as this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/125282521/ajTFEY
You dont need to send it to me directly. There is a way to share it publicly like how I've shown above.
It's how people ask for to see your character sheet for feedback in the #character-discussion channel.
So for practice, try to share the link to your dnd beyond character sheet like I did.
Great it works.
So for future reference, when you need feedback on you characters, you can share the link to a dndbeyond character sheet in #character-discussion or #optimization . Which you channel you share your character is going to depend on what type of feedback you want.
Keeping things within the topic of #dnd-newcomers there some basic that you still don't know yet.

Thanks for your help
Thanks broski
So here are some basics that you are missing:
- Using standard array or point buy to establish your ability scores.
- How to add spell to your character sheet.
- How to add your starting equipment from you your class and background.
@maiden timber what's up!
I wanted to play dnd for so long officially and then I realized discord servers exist lol

Hey I'm not new to DnD but I'm new to being a DM, I was wondering if someone could help develop a parties backstories and notes into a campaign? I have the majority of the work done ofc but I mostly want a more seasoned DM to see if my notes will work with our campaign
Hello!!!
Just as a heads up, the moderators ask general discussions be moved over to #dnd-discussion
Otherwise they will start deleting comments.
For help with DMing #dm-discussion is the best resource for you.
Yes please keep on topic - this channel is to help new to D&D folks get started with learning the core game rules and mechanics.
Oki ty I totally missed that channel
See #channel-guide to see all of our many channels for specific D&D topics
@vestal creek Welcome
I feel welcomed :)
@hidden spear Take your time making the adjustments I listed above and if you'd like more feedback on the character, feel free to ask in #character-discussion and #optimization
I will also add, that Wizards will be more challenging for new players because they reading and understanding more rules, particularly how spells work, and require you to keep track of more things when you play.
So take your time going over everything and ask specific questions.
Everyone here has been super helpful thank you guys for explaining stuff to my pea brain!
Can I show you guys my character stuff?
Human fighter named godrick, his whole family died and only thing they left him was a ruby amulet(possibly spell imbued) after his family died he decided to train his strength ritually and became a amateur adventurer completing villager quests and helping injured animals
He uses no weapons and wears no armor as his main trait is a pacifist
Sounds like an open hand monk
Its not impossible to build an unarmed fighter character. I've played one in the past and had some fun with it. But that is typically what Monks are for. Their primary class features are focused on unarmed combat and unarmored defense
Are we allowed to ask for some extra help with the DND beyond app?
#ddb-support would be the best place for that
A rune knight tavern brawler fighter could do the trick
If we're going to get into the specifics of the build, the conversation should probably move to #character-discussion

Hello, im new, is there a Spanish community?
hihi!!
Probably
Greetings
It's annoying you can't post an image, as I'm trying to complete this DND character sheet and confused on certain bits
What are you having trouble with?
You can use an image hosting service to share a link to an image - make sure to follow server rules and provide text context (e.g. explain what you're linking to) when sharing links here on the server.
Still having trouble?
If so feel free to send me a message with the sheet and what parts are troubling you.
I'd say roll20
it doesn't really help you make characters by providing you a list of options and guide you through the process like dndbeyond but, it lets you use homebrew or content not in the phb and such (without having to pay for content)
Does anyone have any recommendations for what websites are good for getting familiar with dnd again? I played a while ago but I haven’t read up on anything in years
Ok ty
Im preparing dragons of stormwreck island for a game ill be running next week anyone got any tips for me? will ne my first game ive been DM
And the message under it should help too.

thank dude ill be checking it out
Thank you^^
Hello
I’ll def check it out!
so wait to make a post we just type slash looking-for dm into any chat?
Yep - read #find-a-game carefully as it explains the commands
i did that was my only question thanks
The whole guide is great, but these tips are a good baseline: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/cheat-sheet
The rules are there to help you and the group have fun, trust your gut, and if a player asks you something you cant easily find the rules for then make a judgment call and you can double check later. You'll learn it all in time, and no one is expecting that from you on day one.
A session 0 is a great tool as well, pull each character aside and ask them why they are there and if they want to have another player character hear a rumor about their character, it'll allow the PC's to start talking on some common ground early and let the party form up quick
And if you took the time to come here and ask for adive I'd say your already ahead of the curve, youre gong to do great
Is it ok if I send a link to my character sheet. This my first ever dnd character so I want someone to check it out
You can, but the best channel for character feedback is #character-discussion!
Ok
Thanks I'm exited for it I've got a good idea of how the campaign is gonna work I am 3d printing the BBEG and gonna work on painting it tomorow if it has fully cured! I've got a few ideas on how to tweak the biggening to make it a little more exiting for the PC's
i need help getting into dnd and idk where to start

Everyone’s I tried to joined never responded or is closed
It may take you days to weeks to find a good table to join. This is because there are waaaaay more players than DMs.
Yep. Just got to keep trying!
Finding a good table to join is like dating. Keep at it until you find "the one."
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #looking-for-dm .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
** Adventurers League**

How does Passive Perception work again?
It's something your DM looks at — such as when there are hidden enemies and they don't want the players to know something is there by asking them to roll a Perception check. The DM would look at each character's Passive Perception and see if it meets or beats the hidden enemies' Stealth check. If the Passive Perception is greater than that PC spots the hidden enemy.
I know youd have to roll perception to see it... but what's passive perception for? Does it bypass it if their stealth roll isnt higher than your passive?
I just explained that above.
It's for the DM to see if the PCs will notice something without asking the players to roll.
If the PCs are wandering down a dark dungeon hallway and the DM suddenly ask, "Hey, do you mind rolling a Perception roll?" and all the PCs roll low. Now all of the players will wonder if they missed something or someone is hiding.
The Passive Perception will allow the DM to see if any PCs spot something hidden without alerting the players. If the Passive Perception is below the DC value then the PCs won't spot it.
not new to dnd but new to dming! looking to run a oneshot and wondering if people have tips for running a silly homewritten one— i’m trying to not run anything that takes itself too seriously
Head on over #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
oh i did not realize that was a channel! thank you
I was planning to pick up DND5e rule book. Is that a good place to start
The PHB or the DMG? If you wanted, the basic rule are free and linked in this channel's pins as well as #learn-to-play
PHB or DMG?
Player handbook (PHB) or Dungeon master's guide (DMG)
Check the pinned! There's a whole series guide for basic rules!
The handbooker helper series linked in this channel is a great video supplement
New to dnd I know very Very VERY little and would like to learn how to play, so can anyone tell me how I can get a game going with a couple friends. (we are players and need a DM)
Check this channel's pins or #learn-to-play to find a link to the free basic rules as well as the Handbooker Helper video supplement.
As doichinstein said #find-a-game is a great place to find players & DMs within this server, but there are many other ways of finding a DM such as through other social media, local libraries, etc. The basic rules also contain all the rules needed to play and DM if you or one of your friends take up DMing.
How many people is your group made up of?
Depending on the number, it may be faster for each of you taking turns DMing.
Just me and two others
You could take turns running a one shot adventure.
yeah just the problem is none of us really know how anything works
I just watch YouTube vids tbh
LIke any game, its a learning process
You can check out #learn-to-play for the primer if you like

There are also adventures designed for beginners.
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
This 3 minute video by One Shot Questers provides a nice overview of D&D https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD

Hellooo is someone kind enough to send me a PDF with some item cards?
Perhaps the kind folks down in #third-party might be able to point you towards a resource like that?
are poisoner kits, included in "artisans tools"?
Doesn't look it. Here's a list: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#ArtisansTools
ok ty

Check out the Dyno post above to get started. Unfortunately D&D is a rules-heavy game so it's a big ask to have someone walk you through everything 1 on 1. That being said, if you have specific questions, this channel is great for asking beginner questions (i.e. what is a saving throw?).
Don't worry about memorizing every single rule, a good skim of the basic rules will work fine. Focus mainly on the rules on combat and character creation.
How do you play D&D
The Basic Rules in the bot post above and #learn-to-play have all the info you need!

Hi ! I'm new to being a DM (and just D&D in general). Any over all tips for starting?
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:

Hi I'm new to being a dm and I'm starting lost mines of phandeliver any tips and can I finish the campaign in one sitting?
no
i did a bout 13 sessions 3 hours eatch for lost mines
Dang that's a lot
players really set the pace of the game with how they explore and roleplay and fight, the pace set at one table will never really be matched at another
it manly lead toward time and day
absolutly, but you will have to change the balance of the game by either reducing the combat difficulty or letting each player controll a sidekick
You certainly could, but it'll require a lot more work on your part
If you've got more questions about being a DM, we've got #dm-discussion , and if you've got questions about the Lost Mines module specifically, you can check in #1029833015423143957 !
@buoyant walrus @primal harness: This guide is a good intro for the aspiring DM! https://howtogm.guide/
Sure. It's an uphill climb to learn to run the game and to make an adventure, but it's possible.
The usual recommendation is to run a premade adventure first, to get some experience. Many are built such that your players can hop into your homebrew story right after they finish the adventure.
Got it thanks
you absolutly can, thats how i started, then i learned to love running published campains, i switch back and forth and have linked togeather many of the published campains into epic stories
So, I was wondering. For creating characters, could I make a custom race? Like a cat that walks on two legs or something?
im an dm and one of my friends want to have prof in cooking, what is cooking is it survival?
I have recently started playing DnD and i had no idea how to allocate ability stats for a Dwarf Paladin lmao, so i had no chrisma and no constituion, so i had a very weird character lol
yeah it should be
The tabaxi already exist as a cat-like humanoid race.
Regardless, the DM has final say on which playable races are allowed in their campaign setting.
Oh? 8 didn't know that. Thank you, I'll check it out
If the DM doesn't allow tabaxis in their setting then it's a no.
yeah it not in the basic rules either, you have to buy the other content for that if you play DnD beyond
Ah, thank you. Definitely good to know!
There are about 60 races available to choose from.
It is worth seeing what is already been made.
60???? I thaught it'd be something like 10-20
prof in chef's tools could help too
You'd need access to the respective books to see all the details, but the full list is here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
What dice do u need to throw for a specific thing? Like for stealth or combat? is it the same or how do I know?
The game has been around since the 70s, the current version started back in 2014, you're essentially getting all of One Piece with none of the wait
The d20 is used for saving throws, attacks, and ability checks. The other dice are mainly for damage and healing. Abilities and features generally tell you what you need to roll.
Thanks, whats the difference between attack and damage tho?
Attack determines if you hit.
The attack roll is how accurately you hit, the damage roll is how hard you hit
Damage determines how hurt somone is when they get hit.
Generally its up to your dms discretion, fior example:
- if you have to climb over a log you would have to beat a DC of 10 for acrobatics
- whereas you hvae to see in the dark with the fog, youd have to beat a DC of 20 for perception
You can read the full setails of attacking here in the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#MakinganAttack
Attack you'd use d20 to beat an Armor class = AC and then a damage roll is weapon specific like a Warhammer is a d8
Hello, is the Hobgoblin a good race for Paladins in 5e?
To make an attack roll, roll a d20 and add the appropriate modifiers. - What are the appropriate modifiers?
Any race can effectively be any class.
Okay, I was just wondering because Hobgoblins look cool but my party needs a tanky boy.
for example you want to fly in with a sword to stab a creature, you'd add acrobatics to hit
- AC to beat is 15
you roll a 13 but have a + 3 to acrobatics so thats 16
so you hit
That is not how that works.
Oh i am sorry, i must have understood wrong
For melee weapons without the finesse property, you add your Strength modifier. For ranged weapons, Dex. If they have the finesse property, you can choose either Strength or Dex. If you are proficient in the weapon, you add your proficiency bonus.
So if you're a level-one fighter with a 16 in STR, you have a +3 and a +2 proficiency. So for melee weapons without the finesse property that you're proficient in, you add +5 to your d20 roll when attacking.
ohhhh that makes sense
thanks
Oh my God, I did not know that, I thuaght it came about around 2010....
I fell so stupid haha
So if the attack is for example 16 and the opponents AC is 15, that makes the hit counts, nothing else if its over?
The attack roll has to meet or exceed the target's AC. Unless you roll a 20 on the die, nothing special happens by rolling higher than the AC typically.
And no need to ping me. Just ask the question and folks will answer.
Alright, then the next thing is damage.. my witcher has a rapier wirh 1d8 so I roll it + modifiers… if I roll like 12 would he get 12 damage or?
If you roll an 8 on an 8-sided die, then add +4 from your relevant ability modifier, you'd deal 12 damage
Thanks and hit points are hp?
That's correct
Dont armor change something? Like AC or HP?
AC isn't rolled.
There are various different ways to calculate your AC. The different forms of armor give you different formulas to use to figure out what your AC is
Hit points typically increases upon level up.
Your Armor Class number determines what attackers have to roll to hit you with an attack. It can be affected by the Amor you wear, your Dexterity score, magical bonuses, etc.
Thanks guys, appreciate it
Idea: Vengeance Paladin with a Shotgun. Doomguy. What we thinking?
A "shotgun" is not a weapon that exists in D&D, and a paladin's main feature, their divine smite, can only be applied to melee weapons attacks.
Also, character concepts are not really an appropriate topic for this channel
#character-discussion is a good place to discuss character builds
shotgun is a firearm in the DMG (but yeah regardless of that, optional firearm rules are probably not suited for this chat)
Ah I stand corrected. I thought that they didn't include a shotgun
Hellooo

For context I was in a mental hospital when I first played it when our therapist recommended it and we only got 30 minutes so he invented "speed dnd"
what brings you here?
The bot post above has some great resources for getting started, and #learn-to-play has even more detailed guides. And if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. We're more than happy to help
Above comment it was really fun and the thought of dnd itself seems rlly exciting
I'm not sure if I want to buy the table version bc I don't really have anyone to play it with so I wanted to start on dnd beyond but I'm not sure how much detail I should put into my first character
You don't need to buy anything to get started. The Basic Rules is free.
The basic rules are linked above, and they are completely free. So are digital character sheets, and digital dice. You can start playing for completely free
so are you interesting in learning more about it? or more interesting in playing it? because there are great resources for both here!
Ik that digitally it's free which is why I opted for that instead of irl but I'm worried that 1 I didn't create a good enough character and 2 that I didn't put enough lore into the character
Both
I already downloaded the basic rules off the dnd beyond app btw
Don't worry about creating an amazing character yet because you will probably have to make a new character from scratch when you find a table to play at.
Good enough is a broad spectrum, as long as you like the character and it follows the rules that your DM set then it doesn't matter.
what does passive wisdom - perception means? There is a number 13 before it.
It's for the DM to see if the PCs will notice something without asking the players to roll a Perception check.
The full details on passive skill checks can be found here:

Ah! Sorry!
Are we allowed to add a picture link? I'm trying to complete the character sheet with using the DND beyond app as a helpful guide and I'm struggling
Do you roll for attack every round? Or only first then its damage?
If you make your D&D Beyond character sheet public you can link it.
You can attack or do another action on your turn.

See I don't know how to do that, I've converted the official character sheet for Adobe reader so I can edit it on my tablet
You need go to the website to do that.
You can post images with image hosting sites like Imgur.
Thank you, just noticed there's an export to pdf but only from the website
It's actually slightly different layout to the one from the PHB but it's also filled in souch more than I did lol
to make the sheet public you go to the sheet on the website, click the Anvil for the Character Builder, then the gear for the Home tab, then scroll down to the bottom for “character privacy” settings
Hi~! How's everyone doing today? ^^

Guys I got a question: how does a kickstarter work?
You tell people you're going to make something and ask them to give you money for it. But that's not really a question for here
That's not a D&D specific question - try asking in #non-dnd-topics
O alright sry
Hello everyone newbie here
same, I'm completely new and barely know anything about it
It's okay. We can learn fantastic things here. Good to see you
DnD Doge brought me here 😭
For yee who seek knowledge check out #learn-to-play, its got a bunch of great stuff to read to get a good understanding of what D&D is and how to play
Otherwise, feel free to ask whatever questions you have along the way, plenty of helpful ppl around that love to talk about this hobby
I learn better through experience
Thats very fair, I feel much the same. Its still respectful to at least give the rules a once over before joining your first game
Most DMs will require you to have read at least the basic rules. If you're looking for a game, head over to https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1070720656917938227
new here too. ppl said it's good for newbie to read the basic rules at least once. so i'm going to read it now.
imma go and read rm
I'm down for whatever really
hi, im new to the whole dnd thing and i barely understand s thing about it so if anyone could help me out i'd be very grateful!

Thanks
So wait
I’m confused is it not taking me to like threads where I can talk to people who want to play
Did you read the instructions in #find-a-game?
I just wanted people to play with so I downloaded discord again I’m not familiar with how this works
The instructions for using the Looking For Game/Group channels are all in #find-a-game. If there's something specific you don't understand, knowing that might help clarify!
Hello all! Just getting started, I found a local spot for adventure league and joined a game and going to my second tomorrow, but sshhhheeessh there’s so much to learn. Is there a good source for video or audio as I don’t have the time or the wallet to read all the books. I have the players handbook.
Critical Role’s handbooker helper series is useful
Ok, Thank you!
Why is creating a character for the first time so hard?it requires a lot of research especially when you don't have phb.
I slowly made a half-elf bard. It took a while because I had to Google EVERYTHING. I'm trying to make a character for my brother now and why are wizard so complicated? 😭
you can find all the important information from the PHB in the basic rules
and wizards aren't really too much more complicated than bards
how do I send an image here, it's my first time printing out a character sheet and idk if there could be anything wrong to point out
Cant post images here but if you'd like, send it to me in a message and I'll take a look.
I've sent it now
Hello! My name is Zero ive been interested in DnD but i dont know how or where to start. Can someone help me and educate me on this?
have a look at the #learn-to-play channel
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules this particularly is the most important stuff to look at
Thank you!
Is enervation an important spell to have as a warlock for healing?
#character-discussion would be a better place to ask
Hey everyone! I’ve been interested in D&D for a while but I’m finally getting into it. Still gotta make a character but I read all the rules. Thanks for all the links, they’re really helpful
@bitter saddle Have you read the rules on how armor works?
no sorry where could i find it

Components: V, S, M (tiny tarts and a feather that is waved in the air)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
Does this mean my character needs to do something vocal, with a sort of hand action with tarts n a feather to cast this particular spell?
V = there is a verbal component, which means uttering some arcane words (which are clearly recognisable as magical words)
S = there is a somatic component, aka a gesture made with your hand. If the spell has a material component, you can instead wave the the material components around, or the spellcasting focus if you're using one
M = there is a material component, which you must have a free hand to use during the casting of the spell. If the material component doesn't have a cost and isn't consumed by casting the spell, you can replace it with a spellcasting focus such as a wand, staff, or rod
For that specific spell they would need to utter some arcane words while making a gesture that can be with the hand or hands holding/touching the material components
Wow that seems like a pain though, I'll need to make notes which "ingredients" I need for certain spells then
Not really
- You can use a focus and only track costed/consumed components
- You can use a components pouch
- You can say to your DM "I'm buying all the components I need for my new spells" when you're in a town or city and then you're good to go
Unless a specific component is costed or consumed, it's largely there for flavour
The majority of spells either don’t have material components or have the kind that can be replaced by a focus/component pouch, so it’s not that bad
Oh ok so as a Bard I'll need to buy a components pouch asap? Or a focus (doesn't seem to fit a Bard though)
Bards can use their instruments as focus
Holding your lute/flute/drum is enough to replace any material component that doesn't have a cost and isn't consumed
And if it has a material and somatic component, strumming your guitar or plucking your harp can also satisfy the somatic component
Sure, I ain’t a full pro, and only know like 60-70 percent of the rule and lore
Alright letz jump channel once more to character discussion
I think you should look at this instead.
I'll take a look at it
@hidden ridge What questions do you have about character creation?
what race should I use? this is my first time creating a character so I don't know what the outcome will be
Unlike some previous editions, you can pick just about any race and have it work perfectly fine with any class
Are you in a campaign/do you have a DM?
If not, then it doesn't really matter and you should just mess around to get a feel for making a character
I'm confused about the "abilities" section in dnd beyond
When it comes to pick a race there aren't wrong choices. Just pick a race you like. For example, a wood elf might make a good ranger but that doesn't mean you can't make an orc who can shoot a bow.
Where on D&D Beyond?
the ability scores
Have you read the Basic Rules, specifically the section on Step By Step character creation?
I'm finally done creating a character
Hey my internet is way too bad when it comes to loading dnd beyond so can anyone tell me what these spells do
If they're in the SRD/Basic rules, you can just download that https://media.wizards.com/2016/downloads/DND/SRD-OGL_V5.1.pdf
If not, then no
where can I join a session?
Read the instructions in #find-a-game.
Trying to filter questions I have, not question bomb immediately
- Trying to put together a list of things I need to nail down to ensure I have a handle on:
- Required learning for core gameplay
- Adjustments to make for solo play
- <redacted info re how I want to handle the GM/DM role based on existing server rules (3.7 in particular)>
- I got a license for Foundry and that is set up, etc.
- The only "core" source book I don't have atm is the MM, which I figured I can defer for the moment
- For solo play, I have also acquired:
- DM Yourself (Tom Scutt)
- Elminster's Guide to Solo Adventuring (Oliver Gibson)
... I think that's the most important points for the moment 🤪
Save e.g. "also maybe taking a few rules from BG3 because holy crap, I am a hoarder lol"
I figured I'd ask here initially before branching off to other channels for more pointed questions, anyway
(Sorry for the brain vomit, btw)
So what is your question exactly?
Sorry, was wondering about that after I sent the message 😂
Focusing on these two atm:
- Any more recommended resources for Soloing?
- Recommended resources for newcomers?
- especially in the vein of "read this before starting", etc.
Short of e.g. "Read all of 'Basic Rules'", unless that's actually something I should do
You should read the Basic Rules because they impact gameplay. If you're playing solo, I guess you can do whatever you like, but if you do try to join others at a later point, knowing the rules will help tremendously.
I've heard good things about The Solo Adventurer's Toolbox, but I've never done solo play and D&D isn't really designed for it.
D&D is a group collaborative game and wasn't designed for solo play. There are "solo" adventures but they're few and far between and they're more akin to the old "Choose Your Own Adventures" than your typical D&D adventure made for a DM and 3 to 5 players.
Of course, folks have made workarounds, so it's definitely possible to play solo. It just might be tricky. Still, the rules tell you how the game works. I'm not sure the solo resources present that info themselves.
Yeah, that's fine
Interactive Fiction is something I've always enjoyed, CYOA is eh, but there are definitely ways to get around it
Anyway, okay, so it's probably good to maybe try and go through at least Basic Rules to start, so I can get a handle on that first
Then I can think later on how to tweak things that might work better if I continue to do things solo
Video supplements like Handbooker Helper or WASD20's Rules School may also be useful to you. And you should feel free to ask questions here if you don't grasp what you find in the rules. There's a definite learning curve to RPG books!
Will do
Hopefully things aren't much worse than technical reference material haha
If that's the reference point, you'll probably be fine.
hi guys! this is kind of random but I played a campaign once in college and have wanted to get back into it, but i moved to Asia so my timezone is kinda weird LOL any advice for finding a game or are they mostly in the US?
Heya, I want to get into dnd but I don't have any local friends to do it with. Tbf I haven't played in a looong time so there's that too
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The links above should have what you want
While there's a massive contingent of US players, it's not uncommon to play with folks all over the world thanks to the rise of online tools. I'd recommend not looking for time zone alignment so much as time alignment; if you're good with playing in the AM while someone else is in the wee hours of the morning, great!
And look broadly. There are a lot of places to search for games beyond just this single server.
Ahh thanks so much for the reply! I’ll look closer at the times
Silly q, we can't seem to find the Bag of Tricks.....it says it's in the basic rules but can't see it there, even checked the PHB too
Magic items are in the DMG, not the PHB.
Bag of Tricks is in the Basic Rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/magic-items#BagofTricks
Basic Rules has some material from DMG & MM, enough basic info to allow you to run games
How do I start? Like where

Thank you
I just got the players handbook. I’m super excited to learn as much as I can ^^
You don't need to memorize everything but just familiarize yourself with the fundamental rules.
What is a good class to start with for your first character?
Depends on how you wanna play I’d think
I’m probably oddly excited about all of this! 🙌👏.
The short answer is whatever class you find interesting!
Made my very first character EVER 🥹🥹
I need to make my first character
How’d you make yours? Like any websites or anything?
You can create a character sheet on DND Beyond!
I literally started googling while at work lol and found the website to create a character . “D&D Beyond”
I got today off so I’m using today to build my… everything
Check the pinned for more info if you're completely new as well.
Im not new to dnd im just new to the server
Yes I am super new.. like this is my first attempt at trying to get into d&d
How do I find who or even where I can play? I have no friends that are interested 😳. I’m VERY new
Any suggestions?

Same !!
Yeah same here ‼️
The bot post has info for using the server's Looking for Game/Group channels.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I played twice once in vr chat and once with some friends otp
Haiii:3
Downloaded and currently educating myself 😅☺️
It's a lot of info, but don't feel like you need to memorize everything! The most important things to learn are:
- How to make a character
- How combat works
- How skill checks work
And you can always check the rules for specific things if you forget!
The character is made 🗣️🗣️
I can’t wait until I make mine
Im probably gonna need to make a new one if I can’t be a gnome 😞
