What’s required to play D&D 5E?
A character sheet and that's pretty much it
Ah living soil. Very rich in nutrients.
Visit this for resources on the simple stuff
Something to randomly generate numbers is helpful also
I dunno i bought it from a goblin it was glowing
So I wouldn’t need an essentials kit?
Not necessarily no
Ah yes the forbidden radioactive dirt
Roll a con save then XD
Really all you need is a group to play with and a character sheet. Plus pencil and such but a good group will help walk you through the rules and guide you as you learn the mechanics
I GOT SCAMMED HE SAID IT WOULD GIVE ME MORE ARMS
I mean he isn't necessarily wrong
The dirt was glowing or the goblin was glowing? That's a very important detail.
Thanks. The only reason I’m asking is because I don’t have the essentials kit or a character sheet.
I think the links I replied to above have some free resources
And if not then there are free printable character sheets out there
Thanks so much
The hardest part is honestly scheduling lol
I'm blessed in that I have a regular campaign every week on wednesday (technically thursday cuz it's after midnight cuz night shift but bah)
Now that i think about it he had a sombrero on but no he wasn’t glowing
D&D Essentials Kit (Dungeons & Dragons Intro Adventure Set) Age Range:12 Years & Up: Wizards RPG Team: 9780786966837: Amazon.com: Books
Would this be a good thing to get, to get into D&D?
Can someone tell me how the weight modifier works when making a character, it says: x (2d6) so do I multiply the numbers from the dice together then add them, or do I do somthing else
Yeah like I said you really only need these
I FOUND A ALIVE DND SERVER
Why would you trust a goblin wearing a sombrero?
The rest of the stuff is more so extras to go more in depth
If I'm not mistaken it would be you roll the 2d6 and add them together and then multiply by whatever the variable is
He had a nice Mustache
Though ngl we don't use weight or encumberance in our campaign because I have my vessel and the party has a bag of holding
Ok thanks
Of course no problem!
I would have fallen for the mustache aswell, I can't blame you.
I said if i could buy it he said no
A good mustache is very convincing and makes someone feel trustworthy
Unless its a gnome
However a good goatee, has the opposite effect,
There goated
Bro the d6 is at the bottom of my dice bag…
I’m just wondering
Ouch
I would say dip your toes in first using the free stuff
Even if it's relatively inexpensive all things considered
Nah ive seen a goatman with a mighty fine goatee
I believe the book that comes with it is free on D&D beyond, from the little bit of research I did.
I rolled for height earlier and ended up getting 6’ 9”
That's a goatman. Not goatman with goatee = villain.
Noice. My tiefling is 6'
I’m playing a dragonborn
Thanks so much
No problem!
Oh can you shout? XD
Nah but I can breath elements so it’s basically the same
Glad I no longer go by the name Magic.
If i were a king I’d declare war on bricks
Heya! I wanted to ask what are the different type of classes and what they do?
Personally i know what some of them do but im no expert
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The basic rules in the bot post above have you need to get started.
Ty!
Can someone explain how the four sided dice that have three numbers on the sides works?
There are two types of d4 die.
If the same number is at the top, then that's the number you use:
4
2 3
However, if the d4 has the same number at the bottom, then that's number you use:
4 1
3
I’ve only ever seen the kind where you take the number at the tip/top
Basically just look for the number that's right-side-up on each side 🙂
I can't even comprehend the second version tbh. Im dumb.
EIDT: Oh I see, the numbers are along the edge instead of centered on the point. Weird.
Heya, im a dm and i was wondering if i can get some help on my homebrew campaign,
Sure
what do ya need help with bud?
Ummm, well its like a long term campaign, and they are level 3 now, we are doing storey arc leveling, not exp, i feel they should be 4 sooon..i am just getting a bit overwhelmed sometimes cus this my 1st time and its homebrew. i mixture of terry pratchett and pokemon. i guess i need to break it down to a good questions umm. one of my characters doesnt have anything personal tying into the storey, her characters motivations are new experiences in life, she is arakocra, dragon ancestry, no close family from the hatchery, one sortve close friends, no major goal, just experiences. when i compare that to my other characters, one wants to be a great in the watch and the other wants to make their father proud and show up step sister, i just having a bit of difficulty with making personal things for the arakocra, since her goals and connections.
Just..don't
If the player didnt give you any hooks
that means you shouldnt bite
my other questions is not really a questions, itsjust my next big encounter is going to be the hogswatch feast, like christmas dinner, and i am trying to tie in somethings, but i feel like i am overcomplicating it. i allready have soo much world building, so i am trying not to create more and just tie in what i have.. i dont really have a clear question yet, but its just good to umm i dunno try and express what im tryna say so i have a better understanding on what i am trying to do
Thank you, i think just thats reasurance is very helpful
May I recommend our #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building channels
No no hes a new player
a new dm I should say
So I think this is appropriate to discuss here
oh yip, perfect ok i can jump over there
Ngl I didnt catch a n y of that
Hehehe thats ok, i will try and figureout what i am asking first hehehe, i will jump over to dm world building
im having trouble knowing what class my character would be, ciuls someone help me
You might find better help in #character-discussion
If a player character lacks motivations, goals, or anything to get them be an active participant in the campaign.
Your best approach is to communicate with your player.
Tell what challenges you're having with the character and work with them to create a reason for them to be proactive character in campaign and a member of an adventuring party.
She is proactive. But her character is alot like herself. Has no goals apart from to enjoy life n help people.
Keeping things within the focus of newcomers.
You can ask a few questions to have a better idea of everyone's expectations.
I listed a few earlier today here: #dnd-newcomers message
If you'd like to go into more detail, feel free to ping me in #dm-discussion
@maiden halo
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops

I am back with a review.
I just want to summarize calculating Hit Points.
As background I am first time DMing for my friend with whom I played 1st edition for 15 yeas.
years*.
If the character is a 1st level fighter class the basic rules state
Hit Dice: 1d10 per fighter level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + your Constitution modifier
So the HP Max = highest roll of hit dice + CON?
That is correct for the fighter class:
Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d10 (or 6) + your Constitution modifier per fighter level after 1st
Thank-you so much.
I can provide an example if you'd like.
This helps a lot. It will take me a long time to learn all of these rules but I love to learn the rules.
Sure
Alright, give me a moment.
Sure
I have a fighter that is created at level 1 with 16 Constintution, meaning they have a +3 Constitution modifier.
At Level 1 they have 13 HP.
Yes
I see.
Good. How about level 2 then?
What does the (or 6 ) mean?
Will you be here in 10 minutes? I have to step away.
At Level 2, I instead choose 6 instead of rolling the d10.
Therefore their HP increases by 9 points, 6 from the choice, pus 3 from the constitution modifier.
So they go from having 13 HP at level 1 to 22 HP At level 2.
And level 3? I am confused about how to add it and what (or 6 ) means.
I will be back in a few.
You can roll a 1d10 or choose to use a 6 instead and add with your constitution modifier.
Yes, I'll be here.
When leveling up, you can increase hit points by using fixed value, in this case 6 for fighter, or use rolled value.
Correct.
Can a hit dice then be visualized just as the 10 sided dice for the fighter?
I was confused for awhile about what hit dice were. The instructions are brief in certain areas.
I am slowly getting it now thanks in large part to the help from the community here.
Yes, let's go back and explore the outcomes from rolling the fighter's hit dice, in this case a d10
Sure
So to recap, at level 1 my fighter has 13 HP because they start with 10 plus their constitution modifier, which is 3.
Now I'm choosing to roll to increase their HP at level 2.
Hey guys, tonight’s session was probably the best I’ve ever done so far in terms of knowing what to do
Won’t say I was perfect, definitely wasn’t
Good to hear.
I am just starting so my sessions have been a bit tough so far as I am learning the rules but gettin better here.
If I roll the d10, these are the lowest and highest possible outcomes.
- The lowest HP increase is rolling 1. Therefore the character's HP increases by 4 points because of the 3 CON modifier. So 17 HP at level 2.
- The highest HP increase is rolling 10. Therefore the character's HP increases by 13 points because of the 3 CON modifier. So 26 HP at level 2.
👍
Thank-you so much.
Congrats. Like with everything else these things take time.
I gotta run but hope to see y'all around soon ifyou are regulars.
Where do I find the board for the starterset
Can you clarify?
Do you mean an actual gridded map?
That's fine.
It can be bought. Let's of tabletop game stores and online shops sell gridded maps.
If you're looking for a more budget friendly approach, you can always buy gridded paper at your local hobby stores.
You could also use checkers foldable grid for a travel friendly approach.
You can buy the D&D Starter set.
Though, I personally enjoy the D&D Essentials kit.
got both
i just need a new map.
im starting to use my math notebook as a map for dnd but i cant use it anymore because of homework purposes
I gridded map or just any map?
Then any adventure book should work.
Though I'd recommend Wild Beyond the Witchlight because it has serveral large gridded and non gridded maps.
k thx
There is also a nice independent group 80 maps for Wild Beyond the Witchlight by Tessa Tessa Morecroft on dmsguild that is very budget friendly.
bet

Do u guys do like campaigns online?
It's an enjoyable experience.
For best results I often recommend online groups play through a virtual tabletop such as roll20, owlbear rodeo, Foundry vtt, Alchemy RPG, etc.
I’m wondering what y’all think would be the first step to getting into dming ,I’ve never played before and I’m wondering if I should start out as a player and see how it is from their point of view, or if I should just go and learn as much as I can about dnd?
Do you need to download an app or is it on browser, roll20 I mean.
The server actually has a channel for DMing help it's called #dm-discussion
It has both.
Though I can't speak for the app experience.
I do have some experiences with friends but I wanna try more with online groups but idk where to start
Ah I see, thank you, I’ll probably go check it out.
General first steps for getting into DMing is to run a pre-written adventure on your first attempt because it will do alot of the heavy lifting as you develop your DMing skills.
Specifically I recommend an adventure that is meant to be completed in a single session, also known as a one shot.

The links above and #learn-to-play should help!
I have this problem with dnd. It’s not with the game itself, it’s a mental thing
I get caught up in comparing my experiences with others. For example, I compare my roleplay to others I’ve seen online and I’m like “man I’m really not capturing the essence of my character”
I need to quit this, but it comes from a real life issue I have where I compare myself to others
You need to understand that roleplay is skill that takes time, patience, and practice to develop.
As you do, you'll cultivate your own style of roleplay.
Yeah I’m trying to remind myself of that, like I said above, I’m pretty sure this stems from my real life problem of comparing myself to others
Best I can recommend is to stop watching live plays for away and dedicate that time for vocal and improv excercises.
RP is easier if you get a voice for a character i think
gets u in the mindset
kinda like method acting
I mean I don’t think live plays are the problem, because I compare myself to others in almost every aspect of my life
I think I’m finding one? I kind of have been basing it off of other fictional characters and then making it more my own
the sillier or more not u it sounds the better
I would try explaining what I started basing it off of but it might would be better to just show you
Right, they are not the problem but they do trigger that imposter syndrome you're experiences.
I recommend checking out the roleplay practice video Ginny Di released over the years: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxkmkXQqcdthH-7BhMgkgMIrSI6s5pY8I
Because it’s a character, but very specific iteration of that character
gotcha
This playlist actually has more videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLUNu6BXzVoA8nzv1PrydDo6bqTPOdvrA-
Well, I’ll just explain, don’t wanna post links here, not sure if I’m allowed to in the first place
Not sure if you know who the One Piece character Shanks is, but there was recently a live action adaptation of the manga on Netflix and I really liked the voice of the actor who played the character of Shanks in live action
oh gotcha yep, i can do a really good like impression of bucklington if you know who that is
I also recommend switching over to #character-discussion as that place is better suited for helping you out.
looking forward to hosting my first D&D game as a DM. Any tips?
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
The bot post above should be helpful for you
thanks 1M
how ability check work ?? like d20 + ability modifier + skill point too ?
for general ability checks, d20 + ability modifier
for skills, you roll a d20 and add the ability modifier that is relevant to the skill; if you are proficient in that skill you also get to add your proficiency bonus
d20+ability modifier+proficiency bonus if proficient
All good!
hey everyone

hello im completely new to D&D and i would love to get into it, can anybody give me a quick explenation? (vc when needed)

D&D is a roleplay game where one person plays Dungeon Master, who acts as the story teller and referee and controls the non-player characters, and the Players, who control heroes in the game. You describe what happens and let dice and the character's skill decide what happens next when chance comes into play.
We also have #learn-to-play but above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
For character sheets you can use the printable/ editable character sheets from WotC such as this fillable form version or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Note that on dndbeyond your access to options will be limited to the free access races and creatures unless you purchase more, or homebrew. Feel free to ask here if confused by anything.
Then it's finding a game. You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to post if the LFG channels here but there are also other places to look into, including Adventure League (official organised play) other platform's LFG (Like roll20, r/lfg on reddit) so on. Or find an in person game by kidnapping getting together some friends or looking into local game shops.
ok thank you for that explanation i apriciate it.
hiii, im kind of new as well. I have heard of DND from some friends and how its been fun playing. I want to understand how they feel and would really appreciate it if anyone can answer some of my questions listed below.
1, For making your character (what do you call them actually? im not too familiar with the terms yet) Do you have to completely fill up a character sheet? or are there certain parts that change whilst playing? Because I've seen how some stats somehow change because of a characters race and position (? not to sure of the terms again example is knight, cleric, etc.) they are (please correct me im wrong).
2, Are there perhaps other beginners here that would like to share how they figured out stuff? I'd really appreciate as well if anyone can dm to explain the basics and what NOT to do and what I CANT DECIDE bc these are usually depending on a game masters preferences on whats allowed or not.
3, how much freedom are we allowed for our characters and where theyre from?
THANK YOUUUU
-
Character is the right term. As for the character sheet, you fill in the information you need to play but there is space left for more stuff. For example, your inventory. But even the stuff you fill in at the start can change. Your ability scores can increase, your attacks will change. Heck, you might die and get reincarted as a different species.
-
Yes, people run beginner friendly games but they're not always labelled as such. You're best off just asking "hey, is this game newcomer friendly"?
-
That's a question for your DM as it will depend on the campaign. A campaign where you're all playing halflings from the same village will have less freedom than one where you're all adventurer's from across the world summoned by a powerful wizard
What's a good campaign to start off with with lvl1 characters (preferably provided) that I can play with my 2 older kids ages 11 & 13?
The starter set has an adventure and premade characters
As well as dice and basic rules for levels 1-3
I have the starter set and am going through it.
THe rule set is explained well and it gives a good idea for an adventure.
My only complaint was I really enjoyed setting up characters and would have preferred having the rules to set up characters rather than pre made sheets.
Those rules are available for free here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
They're also found in the Essentials Kit (which came after the first starter set, I'm not sure if that's the one you're referring to)
What does the essentials set has that the starter one doesn't?
Also one question about character set up.
AFter rolling for abilitiy scores, do I add the ability score increase that is listed in the races section for humans to that roll?
And yes, if I'm understanding your question about ability scores, if you roll say a 13 and decide to make that Strength, then add 1 for being Human and you have a 14 Strength
It's a different adventure (Dragon of Icespire Peak) and has blank character sheets for making characters rather than pre-made
However, the second Starter Set, which came after the Essentials Kit, returned to pre-made characters so presumably it turned out that worked better for most newcomers
I'm going to delete the first part of my message above because I was referencing the original Starter Set and not the newer one. I don't want to cause confusion!
Can someone help me in vc better understand the game
This server doesn't have VC and we prefer that people don't try and solicit others into private chats
Instead, just ask your questions and people will try and help you out
Read this guide (https://howtogm.guide/), watch Matt Colville's first handful of "Running the Game" videos, and search the server for dm tips and/or dm advice as this topic comes up often.
I have my own suggestions here: #dnd-newcomers message
Guys I'm new to DND how does current hit points and temporary hit points work?
Also how do I fill up my spellcasting sheet thing
Current hit points are what your character currently has. They start at the maximum and may be reduced by various means, like being attacked in combat or setting off traps. They are restored by rest or some form of healing, such as a potion or spell.
Temporary hit points are extras granted through some specific feature, such as drinking a Potion of Heroism. These act as a buffer to absorb damage without impacting your character's own HP. However, they cannot be restored by healing.
For spells, refer to your specific class for details: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
hello 😄
Hi
downed player when get revived that downed player got action ???
for example : paladin help downed player and that downed player got action and attack monster immedietly ?
No, but they can use their actions on their next turn as normal
If a player is unconscious and is healed, they regain consciousness. They can take their next turn as usual with no detriments
Remember standing up costs half your movement.
for example if i revived him and next turn from me is him so he can get action ?
If you heal a downed player out of unconsciousness, then they can take their turn as normal as long as they're not downed again by that point
So yes
That's correct.
Hello, I'm trying to fill a player sheet and I dunno what to put in the spellcasting ability modifier. Please help
Well, what's your class?
Yeah. It's entirely possible that you don't have one.
Hello everyone! I am completely new to D&D and im looking to play with a group or somebody that will take me through the basics (like character creation and such). I know pretty much nothing except that the game has rules and is very big world wise.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.

- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Welcome! It's usually recommended that you read through the basic rules and get a decent understanding of how to play the game before you find a group. Remember: a DnD session is 3-6 people taking scheduled time out of their week to play a game, so it might be difficult to find a group that is willing to stop constantly to teach individuals the basics as they arise. You can find all you need to know in the links on the list above, and we're here to answer any specific questions you have!
Hello guys! I am completely new to D&D but I have some people, including myself, who are really interested in the game but we don't know where to start. We are a group of around 6 people and would want a short story, preferably one to finish in one sitting, to get to know the game before we embark on a longer journey. I would ask you all for help on where to begin or even what to watch out for when starting and how to get into the game at first. Thank you in advance!
Check out those links a couple of posts above. Basic Rules will get you started for free.
While it won't be a single session, I'd recommend either the Starter Set (including the adventure Dragons of Stormwreck Isle) or the Essentials Kit (featuuring Dragon of Icespire Peak) if you're willing to put about $20-25 USD into it up front.
While you can start for free, the hand-holding for a new DM that appears in Stormwreck Isle is pretty well-structured.
So you would recommend me the starter set, thank you. I already saw that one but I didn't know if I needed much prior knowledge. I would need to be the DM in our first campaign, do you think I get an good introduction so that I could guide the players through?
Do the players need to know all rules themselves or do I, as a DM, need to be the only one to know the rules?
does the DM play with the heroes or no?
All players should have a passing knowledge of the rules. Most important are what their characters can do, what skill checks are, and how combat works.
Everything else can be looked up as the need arises!
hi im completly new to d&d an wanted do ask if anyone has some ideas on how to start
The DM controls all the monsters and the NPCs. They don't control a character themselves. It's still playing the game, it's just different than all the other participants!

Welcome! Take a look at the links on the post above to get started, or check out our #learn-to-play channel. Let us know if you have any specific questions!
The DM plays literally everything that's not the adventurers: the shopkeepers, the villains, the monsters, the dungeons, even the weather.
The DM plays literally everything else lol
It's true!
Thank you for the quick help, I will buy the starter set and try to learn the rules to the best of my abilities as well as try to get the others to learn the rules
Good luck and let us know if you have any further questions! We also have #dm-discussion for questions about being a DM and running your game in particular.
if im playing with my friends. Can the DM play as a character themselves. I want to try the game out with some friends first but i feel like it'll be more fun if we all play adventurers
Psst: when you think you have a handle on it, look up "dnd cheat sheet" and "dnd character sheet explained".
It's usually highly recommended that the DM doesn't play a character.
Think of it like this: if you were doing an escape room with all your friends, but one friend built the escape room and knew all the solutions to escape, it would be a little weird, right?
it will be but we'll all be new to it. Or could we like take turns being DM?
Certainly! Do shorter adventures you can finish in a single session, pass the baton around, sounds like fun.
And if you'd prefer playing a character, maybe someone else would like to be the DM instead!
alrighty thanks everyone i will go and read the rulebook and try to get my friends into it. I think we'll start with everyone taking turns so we all get a hang of the rules and see who likes doing what
The starter set/essentials kit are kind of specifically written so that they're teaching the GM alongside the players.
would the light that a light domain cleric makes be considered sunlight?
unless it is stated by the spell or ability, light isn’t actually sunlight
thx
Would you say that excessive learning of the rules prior to playing that set is not really necessary?
And would you say that I should read through everything in the set, as a DM, before we play it, so I know what will happen or the rules of it specifically?
You as the DM should read through the condensed rulebook that's provided, and then read through the adventure. I'd give yourself a few days to do it before y'all plan to meet.
You don't need to memorise it as long as you get the basics down and know where to find things.
If there are insufficient pregenerated characters included, or if people want to try their hand at making their own characters for the first adventure, a "Session 0" where y'all discuss theme/tone/lines/veils and the party makes characters together is a good idea.
Okay I will bring the topic of individual character creation up when we get to it and then see where we go from there. I will also read through the rulebook so I am prepared for the many questions that will arise, thank you all
Last question for now, up to how many people could play the starter set "Dragons of Storm wreck Isle", is it bad for the game if I have like 8 or even up to 10 players?
That's not advised regardless of what you're running
And would I like have to scale up the enemies hp or something because there are more players attacking them?
I refuse to ever go past 7 and 4-6 players tends to be the sweet spot
Is there a reason for you?
It gets too unwieldy when you have more people. Combat in particular takes forever
And it's hard to make sure everyone has a chance to participate. Plus you do usually have to scale everything way up if you don't want your monsters stomped.
Wow! Yeah 8 or 10 is way too much. If every turn in combat takes around 5 minutes, it'll be over half an hour before a player gets to do their second turn
So I should definitely keep to the player maximum that is like to 6 players to keep everything from becoming stale and uninteresting for the players
Especially if you're new, that's what I'd recommend
Okay. Thank you!!
how do i find dms / parties
Can I pick any feat when I reach 4th level
You could go to the find a game channel at the bottom of the server
i cant find any that i can go into there
If your DM allows feats, you can pick any that you meet the prerequisites for.

If you've read the basic rules, you can find a game using the link above!
If none of the games listed work for you, you could try other sites which host game searches, such as Reddit or Roll20.
hey uh to try and attempt to get an DM how do I make one of these monodrone messages?
See #find-a-game for instructions 👍
it is kind of funny how I know nobody wll ever choose me as a player
because of too many people in EST and me being too scarce in availability
Keep your eye open. Check out Reddit and Roll20 and the DDB forums. And put a little research in to find how to present your best self when you do apply for a game. Someone that can tell me who they are and what they're looking for in a couple of sentences (and follow instructions in the ad, if any) is much more likely to get in my game than someone who just says "hi".
well ive seen too many people in timezones other than est
i get that but even then, i have very scarce availability
like I mean a one and half hour window on weekdays and 2 and a half hour window on weekends. at a very specific time.
because i limit myself in the evenings so I can get a full 8-9 hours of sleep.
So I most likely will never find a DM
Time matters more than timezones. Some folk work early, or nights. But yes, that's probably a bit narrow for most games. You'd really need 3 hours for a typical session.
fair, i'll probably never be able to find a Dm with my time slots.
i mean let's be honest
Most games tend to be 2.5 to 3 hours long. Unfortunately if your schedule can't accommodate that, maybe it's just not the right time in life to be playing DnD.
Or you could try looking into a text or play by post game. Your availability isn't going to stay the same forever.
That's a good point ☝️!
what are those???
i doubt there will be any other time in life. I feel like in the future my schedule will be even more busy.
that's saying something isn't it?
moving on from this topic, i have no idea what class to choose
i barely chose a race, i ended up rolling a d12 online and letting fate decide
from what i had on DNDBeyond which is just the basics they give you when you make a free account, ended up getting Tiefling
Text games (known as play by post) are DnD games held entirely by sending chat messages. Because sending a message can be done at any time, they tend to be much easier for people with strict schedules
I see
What do you think will be fun? Casting magic? Swinging weapons? Sneaking around?
yeah that's where I am stuck, i'm between Rogue, Warlock, Ranger and Paladin.
also i have no idea how to build character stats if it ever comes to that.
i did it once with a friend, but deleted the character cause it didnt feel right.
Well, let's start narrowing that down. Are you imagining a character that uses their weapons primarily in battle, casts spells, or a little of both?
I want to have melee and ranged
don't necessarily mind if weapons or not but i like to have a mix
i care about mixed offense and decent defence but not GOOD defense just dont wanna be one or two hit.
Any character can have melee and ranged: a warrior could use a sword and a bow, or a mage could cast long range spells or close range ones.
I guess then I'd like to go for something melee focused with a ranged choice as a backup plan
if you know what I even mean.
adds up
i am slightly annoyed i wanted to create a good necromancer so i watched a Youtube video for one and turns out 1 (or multiple i havent checked) of the things i need requires me to spend 30€ on some random book in ddb but i am definitly not gonna spend money without ever having played a single dnd campaign so guess no dnd for me rip
Based on your description, I'd recommend either Rogue or Ranger! They're both fun and can be useful in both close and long range combat. Ranger has a few spells which can augment their abilities, and rogue is better at dealing with traps and hazards.
I'll go rogue then
any tips for what I should prioritise? Are there sub-classes?
Unfortunately, a lot of the additional content in DnD costs money. But all the basic rules are free! It might be more limited, but it's still DnD
Also, why is it that a lot of the extra stuff that could be fun is locked by paywalls??
also, realised that I can only choose one Rogue archetype if that is a subclass then I am locked to only Thief...
All there is to D&D is its rules and guidelines. The only product the game designers sell are rule books. The fact that any of it is free is in and of itself quite a generous thing. The rest of it is a product you'd have to buy, just like if you wanted to play a video game
There's plenty of subclasses! Most important to rogues is the Dexterity stat. Rogues rely on melee weapons with the Finesse property (which means it uses their Dexterity for their chance to hit and their damage rolls) and on ranged weapons, so Dexterity is important!
also, what is multiclassing?????? I've heard the term online on DND Videos but have no idea WHAT THAT IS
great, so I assume being like some otehr non thief rogue is locked behind a rule book?
correct
are there any assassins or i don't know pirate types? what rules are they from?
if there are any obviously
what???
Multiclassing is an optional rule where you can slowly invest in two classes at once. It can be cool, but it's also extremely easy to make a terrible build by doing so. Because of that, multiclassing is highly not recommended for new players.
The assassin subclass is in the Players handbook. The swashbuckler subclass is in Xanathar's Guide to everything
still confused a bit but ok
not on the multiclassing, more on the short script for rulebooks
yea mb colossus has the full names in their post, i'll remove mine
It's the names of the supplemental content books.
also, is there a stat a thief rogue should prioritise or do I just run full DEXterity and something else?
We talk about them a lot, so we're used to the abbreviations
, sorry!
Dexterity is the main stat for all rogues. Some sublcasses will add a secondary ability score to care about, but dex will always be the most important
As I said here, Dexterity is most important. But Constitution is always necessary as a backup!
your biggest priority will be dexterity but constitution is also important for hp, and wisdom can be good if you want to be scouting ahead (since perception scales on wisdom)
ok
and dw about the abbreviations i'll learn
i see.
well after doing some rolls for stats so i don't have to think
i made my character, I also just went with a name off the top of my head and a background etc off of the top of my head, I had most things planned out just was lost on class really
but is there a easy explanation for multiclassing, and maybe a list of abbervations for me???
Could anyone rate my first character please?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/123544750/Vs1c4i
#learn-to-play has a link to a list of D&D terms and their common abbreviations
thx
If you'd like to have your character reviewed, it would be better to post it in #character-discussion
Ok
The easy explanation for multiclassing is:
You start at a level 1 rogue. When you hit level 2, you can choose to become a level 2 rogue or take a level in another class. Let's say you choose fighter. Now you're a level 1 rogue and a level 1 fighter at the same time.
While this can be useful with some specific combinations, you're usually weaker than all other rogues would be at that point in the game, AND weaker than all other fighters at that point in the game. This is why multiclassing is not recommended for new players.
fair
which link is it???

well i migth ass well do the demo which i have not done at all
I want to be some sort of spellcaster but idk what would be best
Depends, best at what 😛
See that’s a question I don’t even know how to answer
At first I thought maybe a Druid, but I read the guide and it said that can be tough for a beginner to play
Druid unfortunately does require a little bit more research and sheet management than other classes. If you're looking for the most straightforward spellcasters, the best ones in my opinion are Cleric or Bard.
Hello! Are there any artists on this group that like to write characters? I was writing a design for my first character and i have no idea if what I am doing is okay. It includes mostly the roleplay stuff like the backstory and his appearance, beacuse i m not good at the numbers and skills stuff . If there will be someone that I could talk in dm to review it I would be very glad.
The challenge is that Druid is a full spellcaster and all casters require investing time in learning how spells work generally and what specific spells to use when, on top of already needing to learn the basics
On top of that you have a Wildshape feature that also requires you to manage another set of stats (or multiple sets) for wildshape forms
It is a large checklist to put on a new player, so it is not recommended unless you truly want to put in the time
Check out #character-discussion , that's the place for character stuff and advice 😎

Read #find-a-game carefully (hint: start with /looking-for and see what the Discord autosuggests to you)

What does BBEG mean
Big bad evil guy/gal - basically the main antagonist/enemy
Would ‘Wild Shape’ be good for stealing stuff? Don’t plan to play Druid or anything but I want to know because it just sounds funny to me
i thought wild shape was more for playing as animals/beasts?? :0
The silliness cannot be contained.
Hii my character is a dwarf cleric I learned a bit about DND and I want to try a campaign my dm's are open! 😺

hi
i currently have a hyperfixation on dnd
i wanna learn a bit but i dont even know where to start,,
do u already have a group?
no
that's probably where u should start lol

people usually make characters and stuff once they've got a group, because you might wanna know about the kind of campaign you're playing
i just kinda have an idea for a character and i wanna use it
i dont know much about dnd at all, i only played it once that my friend made me play
You can always make a practice PC (player character) before joining a game, but as Jas says, it's a much better idea to make a new PC for a new game.
what's the character idea
its mostly just the power idea
let me hear it
Be aware that your powers/abilities are generally dependent on your class & race, and not somethin you decide (outside of homebrew) 😛
true
its taken from a game where there are tempos, and each one does a different thing, but all of them involve time in some way
but even then u can always find a class and race that matches the ideal character u have in mind
and each power is a name i have to say to cast that "tempo" like a mage i think..
elaborate
mhmm
one stops time for 7~8 seconds, the other 3 seconds, all of them have cooldowns that are dependant on the ability
i dont have webgl 2
Hello :DD
hi
idk anything about this server besides its rules lol-
Same!
This sounds like a concept that will be very hard to pull off in D&D, and I'd recommend looking over the basic classes and species and picking from them and building an idea around them first.
Ooo :DD
Could be interesting flavor for a Fighter's Action Surge. The mechanic as its written allows the Fighter to take another action immediately during a turn they've already taken an action. With a bit of timey wimey nonsence you could flavor it as them rapidly increasing their ability to act within linear time
Otherwise, you're going to be waiting a long time till level 17 when a few spellcasting classes get access to the Time Stop spell
D&D often gets sold as a 'You can do anything and be anything!' game and while it certainly has a lot of flexibility, it is a specific TTRPG (table top roleplay game) that focuses on specific types of gameplay and has it's own rules. Sometimes trying to bring in an outside idea without knowing the basic rules leads to frustration as you realise you can't really do that idea in D&D, and may be more fulfilling to use what D&D gives you to build an idea.
hm
ooo that’s good to know-
I already made a character and read it over on dnd beyond :,))
Have you read the free Rules? There's more to the game than your character sheet, such as ability skills and combat rules.
i literally know nothing about dnd basically
not that I know of-?

cant read it, dont have webgl 2
Okay thank you lol-
Then download the PDF
https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
Done! :DD I had to do a few chores, but I’m done 😄 I read to chapter 5 or 6- I forget which one lol-
It was very enlightening, thank you :DDD
D&D isn't like a video game lobby where you can just drop in to play. Scheduling takes time to prepare sessions that everyone can agree to.
ok.
That said, check #find-a-game for games that fit your time schedule.
I have a question if someone doesn't mind helping. So I'm very very new to dnd. I've loved the concept for a while but I've never seen someone play or anything. I love creating stories or taking part in them and being creative. In the website, the races and such, can you combine them? Like for example. I have an OC that I plan on using for dnd. His father had a contract with his mother before they fell in love and had OC. The father very closely resembles a warlock and the mother and my OC(besides the fathers aspects to my OC) are a race that idk the correct name to but I call them shroom folk. But they mostly just are like elves with mushrooms all over them. Would that be allowed in a DND game. A cross bred character like that? Or would that seem to op? Even though quite literally he losses body parts
Whether a DM allows unofficial material isn't something we can predict. Some folks are open to homebrew (AKA fan-made stuff), and others aren't.
My recommendation is to get acquainted with the game's base content and learn how it works as a whole before you try making up new stuff.
Oh trust me I'm trying lolz. I just didn't know if you needed to choose one of them specific races.
I'd say the officially published ones are your choices more often than not.
Hello. How many chapters would be good to read in the basic rules for a beginner
The first four on character creation, the chapter on using ability scores, and the one on combat.
It's pretty much all worth reading eventually, but you don't have to read about every race or class or spell. Those six would be the essential bits, I think.
Hey guys I am new and I have no idea how to join a campaign
ummm Hi... I created my first character but I dont know what to do
What’s the issue?
If you are looking to play then you’d likely want to find a group, if so you should read #find-a-game .
The channel has the information and tools to help you find a group to play with.
Okie Thx!!
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet? There's more to the game than just your character sheet.
A question. Is there any complicated math in DnD? The kind where you have to get out a piece of paper and solve an equation? Or is it simple addition, subtraction and/or multiplication?
Usually just adding and subtracting
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I would say it's pretty simple overall.
(Although I still use the pythagorean theorem in the games I run)
What’s that?
Finding the length of another triangle's side. This might not even be applicable in games you're in.
5E D&D rules try to keep things as simple for ease of use as much as possible.
Ahh I see
Cone area effects for example don't bother with angles -- you just need to know its length is the same as its width (at the target's end).
So there’s different “types” of DnD then? With 5e being one
There are different editions, yes!
There are several editions over the past 50 years of D&D.
5th Edition is the current and most popular edition (and is the one we talk about by default here on this server). If you're curious about older editions then head on over to #dnd-elder-editions
Okay I see. Thanks for the clarification
I’m seeing about DnD beyond, I see that they have an app, how difficult would it be to play with a phone alone? I’m guessing people don’t actually play DnD within the app and they use it for other things while they play on another application like discord. But would it be difficult to find a campaign that’s compatible with just my phone
I think it's possible to play via phone exclusively, but I imagine you'd have a harder time finding a game that meets your needs.
Should be fine so long as the DM is ok with it.
But a lot of DMs use Virtual tabletops which work very rough on Phones
Bad luck that my pc breaks around the time I get interested 😅
But alright, I can try to make it work
The D&D Beyond app is for character sheets and digital books.
If the DM is doing the game online then they decide which virtual tabletop (VTT) everyone will be using. Most VTTs won't work well with phones because of screen size is too small to deal with the UI.
Hoi

I didn’t see this thanks for the heads up
I run my games around and after midnight my time occasionally because all my friends are around the world lol

Hey 👋 nice to meet everyone. Just wondering if someone is able to point me in the right direct / advise the best way to move forward. I'm new to D&D and looking to find a group to learn to play with. I'm non-binary and looking for a LGBTQIA+ friendly group. What's the best way to find one. I'm open to paid and unpaid games but it's hard to see how to try nd filter for groups that are suitable / I can't see how you can filter for this. Thanks to anyone that's nice enough to reply 🙂

What does "+5 to hit" mean?
Roll a d20, add +5 to the total when rolling an attack to hit a target.
Thanks
And if that number (the d20 roll +5) is equal to or greater than the target's AC, then you hit
if its not, you miss
That I understood. Thanks again
what modifier would you add to a spells damage roll?
Nothing, typically. Spells do the damage their text specifies.
If it says to add your spellcasting modifier, than that depends on your class
Sorry
When attacking with a weapon, you add your ability modifier--the same modifier used for the attack roll--to the damage. A spell tells you which dice to roll for damage and whether to add any modifiers.

same for me
Hi everyone, I seem to be a late person to everything lol but I have decided to try DnD, mostly interested in the story line, less focused on battles necessarily
Perfectly doable, but might be a little more difficult! Combat is one of the core pillars of DnD, and most games contain a fair amount of combat. That being said, roleplay heavy games do exist, though they might be a bit harder to find.
Honestly I’m very open to experience new things, so anything to learn is something I’m gonna try (nice to meet you btw :))

Uhhh, hi everyone, I'm new to dnd, just heard of it from a show I watched and was amazed, I want to play dnd and see how to play!
Same here, I’m basically new I’ve played one campaign like 4 years ago but it was a mess everywhere so I’m down to play properly too

Hi I am new to playing DnD. But I have a question about preparing for a campaign, how much info should a player know about the game they are going to play? Or is that up to the DM? A DM friend of mine doesn't like anyone reading anything about the campaign before hand and I don't understand how that benefits the game. Is that how all DM's are?
You should read the free Basic Rules to get an understanding of the fundamental rules of the game. Check the links above.
I knew NOTHING when I first joined, honestly my party is crazy and we have fun
If the player reads about the adventure then that's essentially "cheating" because you will learn what's going to happen.
Ok. Thank you.
I am brand new to DnD and want to get a game started with a set of new players so we can all learn as we go. I have already found one new player so we now have him and I in the group. Please message me if you want to join too! We are excited to learn.
Please don't advertise here. Post in #find-a-game
Hi! I was wondering if getting started with dnd do I need a dungeon masters guide and the monster Manual or am I good with just the players handbook?
You only need the DMG and MM if you plan on being a Dungeon Master. Otherwise the PHB is fine.
You don't even need to buy any books to get started -- the Basic Rules is free.

Thank you! I’m actually a dm for this story since I’m trying this out with my family and I bought the essential kit earlier today and actually kinda dig the role as dm
the essentials kit has everything you need to run the game for several months without needing to buy anything else.
The Basic Rules covers everything you need to get started -- player stuff (classes) and DM stuff (rules and monsters).
Haha ikik I think I’m just pretty excited when it comes to races and stuff due to the handbook being more in depth and also having more races/roles on it
if you're interested in that sort of thing you'll definitely enjoy the player's handbook.
Keep in mind that new versions of these books are being released later this year and early next, with some rules revisions. The 2014 books are still perfectly usable and will remain so, but if you plan to pick up the 2024 versions then you may want to skip them.
Tysm!!
still confuse how to play artificer
alchelmist build
any comprehensive guide about that ?
I’ve tried looking at it online and I’m not getting a straight answer or one that I understand, can elves use potions and staffs and spells. If so what type of elf would fit better for that, what class should it be?
I don't believe your race has anything to do with it. Your class determines what spells and what spell scrolls you can use. Anyone can use most potions.
Every class has a list of spells they can use and a main stat that determines their ability with it. Wizard need intelligence, sorcerers need charisma, and clerics need wisdom.
There are no racial limitations in regards to using magic items are spells.
Spell use is based on your character class.
I highly recommend you read the free Basic Rules.

#looking-for-players tonight at 10
You need to type in the command to post in #looking-for-players. Read the instructions in #find-a-game
So if i hypothetically roll a 1 for a stat, it has a modifier of -5 making that overall stat -4? That stats system is lowkey confusing haha
I guess
What would happen then lol
the "modifier" doesn't apply to the stat itself, but to rolls where that stat is used
so a score of 1 with a modifier of -5 in, say, your INT would cause all INT-based skills to have a -5 when rolling, but your INT score is still 1
Ohhh gracias 🙌
Things that can be categorized as meta-knowledge, such as monster stat blocks and solutions to puzzles, are things that players generally should not know about.
What Players and the DM should know are the answers to these questions to set the group up for success.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can be done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
This table explains what your modifier is based on the ability score: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
ah could you ping the person who originally asked instead?
Misclicked on my end 😅
nbd ^^
If you want to learn more about how stat blocks work this section of Chapter 1 of the free basic rules explains ability scores and how they work with modifiers. This table explains what your modifier is based on the ability score: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
That’s what I am reading, just hard to follow seeing I’m not good with understanding some words
Thinking of joining a Greek/Roman mythology themed campaign. Any dms down for that?
There is no general restriction on spells by race
you could try the #looking-for-players channel and see if anyone is running theros games, that's a pretty greek-myths inspired setting afaik
U don't understand hoe it works
Hira I tried and it won't let me post something for it could you help
if you're trying to make a post, you need to use #find-a-game and send one of the commands in that channel (you can find the list of them in the same channel)
just type / into the find a game channel i linked and it should show you all the commands that are available there
then once you've sent the command, the bot should prompt you to fill out a form and it will send your message into the appropriate channel
Thank you so very much, Zero405. That was very helpful information.

If you’re more of a visual leaner feel free to check out this 3 minute overview video by one shot Questers here https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=cp62okM2Sdsl0-AD
Then check out the Handbooker Helper series, also in the bot post above, for a more in depth view.
The basic rules allow you to make characters. Others books just give more options
For any new players out there.
I would advise against the Dungeon Master Guide.
IT is poorly written and even worse organized.
The Player's Handbook is better though still lacking in instruction frequently.
I don't mean to be blunt but some of the books have to be better written for newcomers.

Perhaps ask in #ddb-support ?
what do i do

hi, i'm brand new to D&D and was planning on joining a group that is doing a 1-shot campaign for "The Tangled Temple", was curious to ask how do I go about making a character
Check this channel’s pins & #learn-to-play to find links to the free basic rules & Handbooker Helper video supplement. Both go over how to create a character.
The channel I linked also has a more specific guide on how to make a character specifically using D&DBeyond’s character creator
The dungeon master’s guide is known for not being very helpful
This is probably due to the fact that it doesn’t really cover what the experience of playing the game is like, due to expecting the dungeon master to help with that
hello! i am completely new to d&d and wanting to learn everything i can, i read a text in the chat earlier about playing on pc, is that true??

Playing online is quite common these days.
What books would you recommend? I’m new
Start with the free Basic Rules.
I was wondering where I can find a campaign to join but only for the content, then leave, is this allowed? My friend said that he does that sometimes and that people all chip in on a campaign and buy content for other people to use, but I haven’t found anything like that
That's against the ToS.
the content sharing on DDB is only meant for sharing with the group you actually play with. So you wont find anything like what you are asking for on the official D&D server
As a DM I wouldn't appreciate an Internet stranger joining my campaign just to use my digital books.
It's already hard enough for a lot of people to find a group to join to play.
Hello!
@steep raft I would agree with the free basic rules.
The free rules are ALMOST the Player's Handbook.
I would still POSSIBLY get the Player's Handbook in the future BUT start with the Free Basic rules on DNDBEYOND
These rules cover most of the game.
My ONLY issue with them is that the instruction in some cases is sparse for instance when assigning starting gear and calculating points.
Can a warforged artificer work
This may be because they expect the DM to help but I think the authors could have done a little better in providing more examples to show how the instructions apply.
However the community here is very very great and helpful.
I would also very highly recommend watching some of Bob Builder videos with a link here.
If you jump to that video to the 10:10 minute mark he will explain the books needed to DM.
I still purchased the PH and the Dungeon Master's guide and am reading both.
But I will probably check out that Lazy Dungeon master guide as he does say it is planned out step by step.
The Dungeno Master guide goes all over the place without really much step by step process for newcomers.
Please feel free to ask any other questions and the community here is great.
artificer works with every race

hi im a really new to dnd, and i dont have any friends to play with
how do i find a game to play as a newbie?
There's #looking-for-players here, or you can find games advertised on Roll20, Reddit and elsewhere. Have you looked through the basic rules and tried making a character yet?
ive tried the interactive guide and watched a short video, but the guide here seems a lil overwhelming to be honest, i havent made a character yet
will it be fine to just join a random game as a firsttimer?
just make sure to ask the DM, theyll be the one to give you an answer on that one
Everyone starts somewhere. Look out for posts where the DM specifically says they're welcoming new players.
but having an understanding of the basic rules will help both of you
If you visit www.dndbeyond.com, you can start a free account. It has a step by step character builder to guide you through the process.
noted! thanks
What Are the things i should write down after a session? What i wrote down after my first session is this:
1.Story summary
2.Notable characters other then PC'S
3.Questions i got regarding thing that have happened
Maybe something like area's visited?
Gotta say, first DnD session as a DM was lots of fun, even if it was a slow start. But after like a 3 hour session they already got to the first quest and somehow cleared a combat without any damage at all
Gotta work on who to focous in combat
Hi
That's good thinking! Write down any NPC names too, and a bit about them.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules um do i have to read everything here to get an understanding on the game
Glance over chapters 1-5, build a character.
Read chapters 7 and 9, they're important.
Chapter 10 is necessary if you're a spellcaster, and then pick your spells from chapter 11.
thank u 🙏
do u reccomend any youtube videos to help me get into it

thank u 🙏
Any and all? I'm afraid i'd get lost in the list when session 10 and up need some searching
i made my character, now what?
can someone help me make homebrew monsters for my dnd campaign on roll 20?
Probably #homebrew if you're looking for help with figuring out the mechanics / ideas, or #third-party for help with using roll20
aight,thx
are the quick build videos from handbooker helper important to watch
you got a party to play with?
not yet
guess thats the next step
how
i might just be dumb, but i dont understand it
what don't you get
Have a look through the posts in #looking-for-players , see if any match your availability and appeal to you.
but theres nothing like a "join" button or something
is it okay for a new player to play a homebrew race
you can't just immediately play DnD. You need a group to play with. You gotta find a DM and some others to play together
ok thanks
so you talk to the person who set up the "looking for players" if you can join and that's it
dnd is not like an online video game. finding an online group has slightly more in common with dating or job applications (but hopefully less frustrating)
some DMs allow it, some dont. I personally wouldnt recommend it
man
definitely less frustrating. DnD for me was "anyone interested in playing DnD?" and here we are
if the race isn't busted and the DM accepts it, why not
but I'd suggest playing a race that already exists
you could also ask in #homebrew I guess to let some people look at the race
can a new player just jump in without reading all the rules
are there any good fairy races 🤔 or is it not recommended
cause im getting bored reading this shit
but you'd be interested in reading what everyone does?
you dont need to read all the rules but the first couple of chapters of the basic rules are a good idea
pretty much 😉
Generally no, because homebrew is like building an engine part.
If you don't yet understand how an engine works, you don't know how the part you built will impact the engine.
you could watch videos instead. the handbooker helper series on youtube is good at explaining the basics
i watched the first like 10 ep of handbooker helper
All, yes
None, no
If you try and jump in without having read any of the rules, it will likely make things needlessly harder
also not every DM likes people just jumping in with no understanding whatsoever
well seems like you did already bit of a dive into the rules. It might be enough for a start, depending on the game
bare minimum is like, you know basic rules
there MIGHT be a very rare chance of someone willing to teach you how to play, but more often than not, people kinda expect you to have a very general idea of how the game works
dont need to know everything, but just enough to not be disruptive during the game
all you really need to start playing is basic understanding of combat, skills, Saving Throws, Start with a fighter if you really don't know much of the game. Low level fighters don't have many options.
whats going on in here
To build on this.
The way most DMs see it.
If they're going to spend hours prepping a session for their players, as a simple courtesy, the players should spend some time to learn the basics and understand how their character works.

Same
Feel free to start with the bot post above.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
- Search Meetup for local play groups.
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person and tend to be very new player friendly.
Online options in this server:
- Follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in the #looking-for-players channel.
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Take your time to read these posts and see if they are compatible with your preferences and interests.
- Tip: Reply to these posts with your preferences and play styles to help the DM determine if you are compatible.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
Other options
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
- This can be played in person and online.
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
- You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
xD
Thanks man
i need a bit of help on the lore of dnd, like on religions and wars
You can read about the D&D Pantheons here:https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-b-gods-of-the-multiverse#DDPantheons
Though this isn't really necessary because you might be playing in a different setting that is created by the DM.
there's no singular canonical lore, but the appropriate channel to ask would be #dnd-lore if you have a question about a specific official setting
what would be the easiest race to do?
Races only give you a handful of abilities. They aren’t as complicated as classes, so pick whatever seems cool or fun to you!
I know this is probably the most asked question, but from where do I start, I want to get into dnd but know almost nothing about it

i choose a monk tiefling as they seemed cool, also monks are also pretty cool is that okay?
Sounds good!
You’ll have to clear it with the DM, of course—say they don’t have tieflings in their setting—but for practice, follow your bliss!
im on dndbeyond, whats the next part i do on the abilities part
hiya, so on the dnd beyond forum i can apparently buy artificer on its own but when i go to the books, the option to view artificer on its own isnt there
You used to be able to buy content separately, but they recently removed that option. You need to buy the whole book at this point.
The rules should be helpful here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
The basic rules linked to you above explain the whole process
Read through it before you go
Hello! Im trying to make my first character by myself and I’m stuck on the first question almost haha. “Optional Class Features” what does that mean?
Are you talking about DnD beyond’s character creator?
Yes
Books such as Tasha’s Cauldron provided …optional class features. If you want to use them you turn that on
otherwise you’re only accessing the basics/PHB version
Ok, I’m not sure what that really entails but I guess I shouldn’t confuse myself with more options
Do you own Tasha’s or any books beyond the basic rules/PHB
No… but my friends do! They don’t really know how to use them though
If you dont own them in DDB you cant access them in the app
What do you mean they dont know how to use them
They’re books. Its pretty self explanatory?
I’m not sure, yeah, we can read them and all but none of us have any experience and know how to apply some of it into the game ( I’m sure they know most of it but I don’t and I don’t remember what books they have …) sorry if I’m saying things weirdly, I’m kinda dumb sometimes
the books gives you supplemental materials to add on to what the basic rules/PHB give
I guess i have to ask the obvious
Have you read the basic rules?
If you havent learned those yet then obviously Tashas and supplements wont make as much sense
Ehm… basic rules like, how to play? Or a book or a long text of rules?
I’ve mostly heard my friends explain the game and watched a lot of YouTube videos

Basic rules linked in the bot message above
It has everything needed to start playing D&D.
Buying other books (like Players Handbook) provides additional rules and options for a game but as noted, you can start playing with just the free basic rules.
Refer to what was linked above
No real substitute for reading them yourself
Ok, thank you for your help..
I might try to start to read some of this soon….
Boy, it’s a lot!
You don't need to read all of it -- chapters 1 to 4 are on character creation, chapter 7 on ability scores, and chapter 9 on combat rules.
Oh ok, thanks, that sounds a bit more manageable
Also watch Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos (link above)
Sure but right now I have a headache, ttyl thanks
You dont need to read it all at once
Hey, I'm filling a charachter sheet for a rogue charachter and I wonder what is the Spellcasting ability. Please help
None
Unless you’re an Arcane Trickster
Base rogue and all other subclasses dont get spellcasting
And for the future - each class or subclass that does get spellcasting will tell you what the ability is in the features descriptiob
Its a rogue archetype (subclass) in the PHB
Ok, thanks for the details !
What’s inspiration exactly? I see it on my character sheet and have no clue what it is
It’s a special resource your DM can give you. Spending it gives you advantage on one ability check, saving throw, or attack roll you make
As to how to get it, it’s up to your DM but is intended to be a reward for good RP, contributing to the session, performing something cool, perfectly executing a plan, etc
I know some dms use the inspiration rule, but I’ve also seen some use the “cool rule” where if a player does something exceptionally cool or creative it just kinda automatically succeeds.
Remember this channel is to help new players learn the game's rules and probably best not mention homebrew rules that aren't common at all tables.
Start by checking out #learn-to-play and the pinned messages here in this channel
Are you plannng to play in person or online?
Online probably
Rather in person but it’s harder for me to find people then
?tag new online
Thanks
Physical: Dice (maybe dice app), pencil, eraser, water, snacks (preferably some for the DM).
Online: A computer/laptop/tablet with Internet connection

So I’m on the weapons section and I’m a little confused on how it works. For example a longbow, it’s 1d8 for damage but how do I know what’s added to it as a modifier?
Melee weapons use Str modifier for Attack and Damage rolls (this includes melee weapons with the Thrown property).
Ranged weapons use Dex modifier for Attack and Damage rolls.
Finesse weapons use either Str or Dex for Attack and Damage rolls.
Can you be a bard and a sorcerer?
I have a question on starting wealth by class.
The rules could be fleshed out some more to provide clear examples.
You can multiclass in any combination you like, as long as you meet the ability score requirements(which are spelled out in Chapter 6 of the Basic Rules & Players Handbook. But Bard & Sorcerer are a pretty popular combo, since they're both Charisma-focused classes
Do you start with equipment OR wealth; Or equipment and wealth as determined by the Starting Wealth by Class Table
Ok I have an character idea but I don't have anywhere to put it down
?
You either get the starting equipment listed for the class(which usually lets you make a couple of choices as part of the loadout) OR you roll for your starting wealth and buy what you want from that.

"When you create your character, you receive equipment based on a combination of your class and background. Alternatively, you can start with a number of gold pieces based on your class and spend them on items from the lists in this section. See the Starting Wealth by Class table to determine how much gold you have to spend." Alternatively, meaning you get one or the other.
Are these stats normal for a new character? i rolled them and they seem too tough for a new guy.

[You asked an hour ago](#dnd-newcomers message). Again, check the links in the bot message above.
What class are you rolling for?
Warlock.
Did you roll or use Point Buy?
I rolled, dnd beyond
Half-Elf?
Nope, i'm a dragonborn.
I don't recommend you roll unless you have a DM to witness it.
How'd you get the +1 to Int then?
Im not sure. it might be one of my attributes?
Ahh okay. Thank you, so I should just wait until i find a campaign?
Dragonborn default to +2 Str and +1 Cha if I remember correctly, I can't think of anything that would give you +1 to anything else.
You can practice making a character. Use Point Buy to be safe.
I'll try again and make a new one
Is this better?

Make Str your dump stat. Don't even have your Dex and Con scores below 10 because you want as much AC and hp as possible

Perhaps move this over to #character-discussion?
BTW, you don't need to post your ability scores here if you're using D&D Beyond. Just post the link to the character sheet (make sure it's made public).
Hey everyone so I am completely new! I bought a starter set and the essentials set. I haven’t found a place around me to play yet/group to play with. But I really want to start learning. (Side note I am in Kentucky if anyone knows of a good place here.)
I know there are online communities but I think I’d love being with people and playing.
Where would you start, what would you do. Any advice is really welcome and needed. Thank you in advance.
For practice characters use standard array or point buy to get stable stats. Rolled gives unrealistic extremes
Go to your local comic store, game store, college/hs, library, check facebook, craigslist, warhorn etc
Also look for conventions
Thank you for that advice!
Is there anything/anywhere I should start as far as learning in the mean time?
Read over the free Basic Rules.
I believe they said they had the starter kit which includes those already. Either way, read them
I don't think the Starter Set includes the full Basic Rules.
hello :))
It might include the basic rules but not the SRD rules, not sure about that
either way they now have it
Can somebody help me and my friend we dont know if our backstory would even be possible?
#character-discussion would be a good place to discuss backstory. I’d be more specific however as to the problem. There are many reasons why a backstory may be ok or not for a campaign
Please don't advertise your games in this channel.
So when we’re doing a dexterity check for something like sleight of hand, we use that modifier as apposed to just the dexterity modifier? If that question makes sense haha
Correct - you would use your sleight of hand modifier.
Tysm!
You’re already a pro!
Was looking at frostbite but its a con save
Hello, everyone...not sure if this Is the right place to así but I just moved to California and would like to DM a game if possible (I found a store near the place Im stayint but know no one)

so like
if i min max intelegence and strength and have everything else a a dump stat, could i become an austrailian engineer?
If a character chooses to begin with the starting equipment do they still start with any wealth and if so where do I find how much?
They would start with any gold granted by their background. The description for the background would specify how much.
i should elaborate, could i create a high power tesla coil and fry my enemies, or create a massive slingshot with a poisoned dart at the end of it
Almost certainly not, unless you have a permissive DM.
really dumb question but... can someone explain how ritual spells work? how many can i have active?
you spend 10 minutes to cast a spell. you can only cast one at a time, but if it has lingering effects they can overlap. Concentration rules apply.
I want to play an archer type character for when I play, and I wanted to be a ranger. Though I keep hearing online rangers are bad. I would like to know why?
Rangers are fine. Beastmasters didn't have the best mechanics in the past, but Tasha's added optional rules that help a lot with that.
And honestly, I think rangers were fine even before that.
I was planning hunter since they seemed cool
Their mechanics leaned more to requiring DM allowance with things like favored foe/favored terrain, but I never had an issue with those personally.
Seriously, play what you want. As long as you're having fun, what 'everyone' thinks is completely irrelevant
If you find you don't enjoy rangers after all, play something else next time
Ah ok for that
And thank you for clearing up my mindset about them agter hearing they were bad
Hello im new, can someone tell me how does a campaign or dnd session begin and what do u need to prepare usually? Like do we need to give a digital copy of our character sheet to the dungeon master before we can start? I did a character sheet from DnD Beyond website. I read thingies about dnd and so much info my small brain cannot comprehend, thanks!
Hi all! Super new to the game, but I have watched a ton of videos, but I had a character idea that I don't even know is legal that I wanted to ask about.
I want to do a dwarf druid who is extremely standoffish with super low charisma (GrumpyDad did post this. Shocking, right?) but with super high wisdom and perception. I would play at the character level, but he is basically an archdruid that is too lazy to put in his full effort, usually waiting for the group to totally muff something before interacting and saving them, maybe in secret behind their backs with the DM.
Would that be a fun add for a DM, or would it just be annoying?
reception will definitely vary from table to table, dm to dm. i think "archdruid but treated as lower level for laziness" could be problematic, because then it's easy to start asking, "in a life and death situation, why can't the character use their full powers to save themselves/everyone?"
and it might be hard to sell people on a character who refuses to help the group until the very last second, because then it'd feel a lot like playing with one less character unless you can roleplay it in a fun way
this kind of concept can be hard to make work in a fun way, so you must make sure everyone in your dnd group is ok and will enjoy the character before you start playing them
Certain spells have a special tag: ritual. Such a spell can be cast following the normal rules for spellcasting, or the spell can be cast as a ritual. The ritual version of a spell takes 10 minutes longer to cast than normal. It also doesn't expend a spell slot, which means the ritual version of a spell can't be cast at a higher level.
To cast a spell as a ritual, a spellcaster must have a feature that grants the ability to do so. The cleric and the druid, for example, have such a feature. The caster must also have the spell prepared or on his or her list of spells known, unless the character's ritual feature specifies otherwise, as the wizard's does.
As how many you can have. That depends on your class. Though you can get ritual spells through the Ritual Caster Feat
Good to know, was just a thought
Because you’re reading outdated and bad takes from 2015

You want to be super powerful and be able to solve every problem without your table knowing? All of this goes against the very point of Dnd , which is neither about winning more about singlehandedly doing everything
Its about collaborating with your table to tell a story and have fun
Where ever you were finding those takes, never go back there

The way any dnd session beings is a group of people agree to play at a given date and time. As for what you will need, it will depend on the group itself.
That's fair. I guess I was overthinking it a bit and I see how it wouldn't work now with your explanation.
Dnd is inherently about playing WITH people, you want to be deus ex machina
It was more of a let them work approach and act as support, but I can see how it would be taken that way. I could do that at any level though.
thanks!
A thing to note is that D&D is a cooperative based game by design.
Although the rulebooks don't explicitly state this, generally a character should:
- Be a skilled adventurer.
- Have joined the team willingly.
- Be friendly with their teammates
- Have a reason to be a proactive participant in the adventure.
- Typically through their goals and motivations.
You can certainly build for support if that's something you're interested in. But ideally your character would be trying to help in their own way. Not just sitting back and watching the rest of the party flail.
You are arbitrarily deciding that YOU are more powerful and YOU have the solution to problems AND you want to act without telling the party
This might fly if you were in a live streamed game with professional actors that all owj the property together but not in any real world table as YOU are deciding that your party is irrelevant
Wait, how do we do a dnd sessions? do we just direct message dungeon masters? then they will send a link to a discord server? or it depends?

Thank you very much sir! ❤️
I think that's an oddly extreme take to a simple question where your initial response would have been (and clearly was) sufficient.
Theres no need to divert the channel from its purpose
Hey champ, whet you're describing is commonely described as a "marry sue"
AKA:A verry powerfull character that undermines all other players at the table
I advise you watch crit crab/den of the drake a little to learn more about why said trope is considered a liability
are there any online campains i can join that arent through vc?
that are begginer friendly
Some campaigns can be play by post yes
there definitely are play by post/text based games out there, you can check #find-a-game to see if anything would meet your criteria!
ok tysm!
You can also find Play-By-Post games on Dnd beyond's forum page here:https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post
Thanks for that. I will look into it. It was just an idea and I really didn't know what the drawbacks could be.
No problem m8,if ya got anymore questions, shoot
Rustage Isekai dnd podcast is funny af
@gritty fern
hello
There is a hyperlink typed as "Basic Rules". Click there, and you're on the right path on DND Beyond.
thank you
Spoiler alert, the second step is to read the paid Basic Rules (a.k.a The Player’s Handbook)
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
