but isnt fun a subjective thing?
Yes, and?
You discuss with your table about what's in line with everyones expectations
For example, everyone agreeing to make characters that want to adventure, want to work as a party, and want to save the day is metagaming in regards to roleplay
However, those three things are the cornerstone of the party actually engaging with the plot constructively
so from what im understanding the best way for me esp as a newbie to make sure i dont meta game or ruin to fun for others is to set expectations and communicate clearly about these things beforehand?
Don't worry about not megagaming
Focus on contributing constructively towards the fun of the table and everyones enjoyment
haha im worrying about it because i can already see where my pitfalls will be as a dnd player
im a gamer first and have a tendency to wanna cheese everything and i wanna be aware of that
You're comparing to a specific live play and assuming all games run that way
There are tables where people metagaming loads and it's fun for everyone there
yeah i guess it depends on the situation
i thought theres more community wide consensus about meta gaming
No, and even if there was, why would it matter?
All that matters is your table and how you as a group want to play D&D
As long as everyone is safe, comfortable, and having fun, that's all that matters
Hey, I’ve been trying to learn about spells but I’m really struggling with how often I should use them, any tips?
Ah, resource management is one of those tricky and fun dilemmas in the game. You could use those spell slots now, but what if you need them later? And it can depend a lot on your class- some classes get some resources back on a short rest, others need a long rest. So you need to think about what you might encounter before long resting and if you need to save your spells or use them now.
I'll suggest talking to your table about it. See what they're expecting, and how the DM plans to run things.
Hey, is there a recommended way for a new player to get into a game? the #looking-for-players channel looks great but seems to adress more experienced players who know what they are doing :p
So first off, don't let inexperience scare you off - most groups are generally fine taking on new to D&D players but it helps a lot if you show you've been reading up and learning the rules already.
Next you can also check #looking-for-community to find other D&D servers that may have games specifically tailored for new to D&D folks or just overall more open D&D games you can koin (community/westmarch style of games).
But feel free to use #looking-for-players and message the poster or post in their game thread that you're interested.
You can also find games through sites and forums like Roll20, Demiplane, and other generic TTRPG servers.
Yo do any of u play on DND beyond cuz I wanna learn to play and I have made a character
@opal coyote what class are you playing
Human fighter
Mhhm a classic we’ll honestly their a 3 types of campaigns I’ve been in
War hungry constant battle . Speaking and talking and having a chill time with minimum fighting and then the in between
@opal coyote honestly what. Campaign do you want to be in
I don't really mind just as long as I can play
I didn't even know there were different types

@opal coyote you can find games using that command also thanks for the help
👍
i am finding it really hard to find out how to join or contact someone to play with can anyone help me with that
like how to join a "party"
Have you looked at the #looking-for-players section?
actually i havent thx
Where best to ask help/advice in this discord about how to rp a certain curse?
#character-discussion would be my suggestion.
Thx
So how would you make a character if you don't have a DND character sheet, is it necessary or can you use anything just to record your character on?
Dndbeyond is a good way to set up a character and keep track of everything
Ok thanks
Np
Should CR correlate to player level. I want to make my players first encounter as fair as possible.
No, CR is more nuanced than that
Broadly speaking, encounter building is a lot like planning a days worth of meals for your party:
- You have the Daily XP budget, this is how much everyone is going to want to eat in total for the day. If you don't meet this, while a single meal may be filling, your party will be going to bed hungry overall
- Each encounter has it's XP budget, which is the portion size. You want this tailored to your party lest they end up wolfing it down without feeling full, or ending up painfully full.
- Then you have CR, which is how seasoned the meal is. Not enough (too low CR) and the encounter is bland. Too much (too high CR) and the encounter is inedible
IMPORTANT NOTE XP Budget has nothing, at all, whatsoever to do with what progression system you're using
The goal is to ensure the following
- For each encounter, you use up the XP budget for the difficulty you're going for
- When picking monsters to spend your XP budget on, you pick monsters of a CR ideally within a range of between average party level - 2 or 3 up to average party level + 1 or 2
- The total XP budget of all your encounters equals your Daily XP budget
How do I know how much XP my players need?
That depends on
- The level of the PCs
- How many PCs there are
- The target difficulty of the encounter
what would you all suggest as a very first caracter?
Go with whatever appeals
If struggling to choose like I did for my first 5e character, you can randomly roll them out too. Doing it slowly is better than generating them all at once, but you can assign a number to each class you're thinking about, roll that, then do the same for races, and so on, until you slowly discover the character you're playing. Helps with choice paralysis and can spark ideas.
But otherwise you can make any class and race combo work. So any that appeal to you.
I'd also suggest characters that:
- have a reason to talk with the group and get engaged. it's a RP game, so lone wolf characters that refuse to speak to their companions can end up excluding themselves from RP and the story.
- You're likely going to start off as level 1, so plan a character that hasn't done heroic deeds and slain dragons already. You're just beginning to be a hero.
- Try to play by the books at first. Homebrew (making up your own race and class) can be very difficult, especially for new players, so better to learn how 'vanilla' D&D plays first. This might mean looking at the D&D options first and coming up with ideas, rather than coming in with an idea and finding you can't make it work with the base options.
Can some guide me through putting up an advert on #looking-for-players ?
#find-a-game has instructions (and rules) but essentially you'll need to type in /looking-for-players which should prompt the form to come up, which you then fill out and it'll post to #looking-for-players
Thank you so much
Hello I’m new to DND and I wanted to know if there are any subclasses of Bards?
Every class has several subclasses. Only 1 is available for free as part of the Basic Rules, but various different source books will contain subclasses for different classes
Alrighty thank you so much I’ve been studying all day I’ve been really trying to get into it and learn
We’re always happy to help! Let us know if you have any more questions
Thank you
Hi I’m trying to find a group of people to play D&D with. Are there any groups needing a player or upcoming campaigns and how can I get in touch with them?
Have a look in #looking-for-players
Howdy
So like- what's the best healer class cuz I kinda like the sound of "monk" or "cleric" but idk
Cleric is the best for healing.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric
Can I make people immortal and incapable of dying? :3
Nope! But you can get closer than most other people can at high levels
Aww ok
Without getting too far into the weeds, there is no true “healer” class, as 5e is not designed to support that role. Healing is a situational thing, nobody can truly do only healing
cleric subclasses may have some helpful features that make healing more efficient, but they still dont only do that. They are capable of much more
Hi
Just FYI, the Monk class is themed around unarmed fighting and martial arts. They don't get any healing abilities at all, except for 1 subclass
Hello i am new to the server and to dnd and was wondering if i could get some help with finding a game of dnd as well as how to properlly use this server. I am pretty bad at using discord not gonna lie.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
i have briefly my understanding is that to find a game i need to go in the : Looking for dm room but i cant chat in that room so im a bit confused
I recommend you familiarize yourself with the Basic Rules (chapters 1-4, 7, and 9) before finding a game.
the #find-a-game channel has instructions for how to use the server bot to generate a post in #750812887697588356 for you. You don't actually type in that channel yourself.
hey could anyone private chat me about dming bc me and my friends are having a session on friday and i need to know what to read aloud and what not to read aloud
thx for the help and i will be reading the rules more thoroughly.
If you're using a prewritten adventure, there are boxed text the DM reads out loud (or paraphase) to describe what the PCs sees.
ok so if its in a box read it aloud, if not dont?
Yes, everything else is for the DM's eyes only.
Text that appears in a box like this is meant to be read aloud or paraphrased to the players when their characters first arrive at a location or under a specific circumstance, as described in the text. It usually describes locations or presents scripted dialogue, so the players know what’s up and have a sense of what their characters’ options are.
alright thanks
I recommend you start with a starter adventure like Lost Mines of Phandelver or Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, they're made for new players and DMs in mind.
i got the lost mines of phandelver
I just posted my request, just wanted to pop back here to say thank you again for the help.
I'm going to be participating in my first game of DND both in real life and in general soon without any knowledge on how to make a character or the game in general. I was wondering if someone could guide me in at least the character creating process.

I would like to find a map making software where other players do not need to own the software.
Check the pinned message in #dnd-maps
Map making software has nothing to do with players though. I think you're confusing map making apps with VTTs.
Ok
I am kinda dumb with computers so still trying to learn lol.
I think I am slowly getting it.
Ok.
So I need a map program first to create the battle maps I will primarily want to use.
Then how do players control the pieces on the map?
I think I am getting more lost lol with more I learn.
Again, check the pinned message in #dnd-maps for suggested map making software and websites.
Virtual tabletops (owlbear.rodeo, Roll20, Foundry20, Talespire, FantasyGrounds, D&D Beyond's Maps) are what you can use to have tokens on a battlemap when playing online. This is more of a question for #third-party because this channel is more for teaching new players the rules of the game.
It's for any D&D-related stuff that's not published by WotC.
Ok
hey can i ask stuff abt dnd beyond here?
If you haven't already, study maps from pre-written adventures.
You can learn a lot what is already available and build a solid foundation for that skill set.
#ddb-support Can help you out the most.
ohh ok ty!
i havent played dnd but i have read the cookbook and seen a few tiktoks on builds
i have no clue how to play
but i really want to
also if possible could i just be a normal ass human with no special abilities other than being styropyro
and making insane death machines

No matter what you do dnd and most ttrpgs require a decent amount of reading
Though the basic rules are a decently light read and have everything you need to be a player in someone's campaign
D&D is a game of rules so you can't avoid reading. The tutorial videos simplify things but you will still need to read the rules.
hello
Where exactly so I find the proficiency bonus at?
Your proficiency bonus is listed on the left hand side of your class's feature table
I use the dnd beyond app where do I find it on that?
I can't put pics in the chat?
Nah, can you describe your question without a pic?
Sp the proficiency bonus is just the +1and +2
Your PB shouldn't ever be a +1, it starts at +2
D&DB's character creator should automatically fill your PB with what it should be, as it scales off your level
I look under proficiency and it says survival and perception
Are you looking in the Basic Rules, on your character sheet, or in the DDB character creator?
It only is for basic skills and motnstr or int
Im afraid I don't understand what you just said
And not str and stuff
You add your Proficiency Bonus to any skill that you have Proficiency with
You get to choose a few to have proficiency with from your Class, Background, and possibly your Race
Even str and int and con
Even a nerdy wizard can have proficiency in Athletics checks, yeah
But only if they choose that proficiency
Please read the section on Proficiency Bonus:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#ProficiencyBonus
Your Spell Attack Modifier is the value you add to a D20 roll when you make a Ranged Spell Attack. Your spells will let you know if they do this or not.
You don't add your Proficiency Bonus to weapon or spell damage rolls.
Okay so it's only to hit not that damage
Yeah, exactly
Thank you so much
how many spells can a cleric prepare at first level?
The forumula for figuring out how many you can prepare is listed in the Cleric's Spellcasting feature
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#PreparingandCastingSpells
Its in the second paragraph there
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
ahh ok ty
What spells do each magic-focused class have access to?
Go to the class's Spellcasting feature and it'll list their spell list.
For example, the cleric's spellcasting feature https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#ClericSpellcasting with its spell list https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spells#ClericSpells
Uhhh
Look at the free Basic Rules, chapter 11 spells:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spells#Chapter11Spells
That is a lot of spells
You didn't specify which class. There are a lot of classes that are spellcasters.
Don't worry about the spells of a level you cannot cast yet. For your level 1 character just focus on the two dozen or so 1st level spells you have access to
Yea lol I didn’t know there were that many 😅
A spellcaster gets a large toolset but its up to the player to use them properly
Ngl I saw a video of a dude saying that as players we can describe anything that we want to do, and I honestly just wanted to see if I could somehow super-chill a bag of metallic balls then throw them into damp air then use a lightning spell on them to make an explosive chain lightning effect
I did make a character once. She was a half orc warlock
A general sentiment is to not try to use D&D as a physics simulator. But with the right DM, with the experience to improvise creative stuff like that it can certainly work out
It sounds fun lol
But I see your point
When it comes to bringing over character concepts to D&D, look past the flavor of classes and abilities and focus on the mechanics.
Doing so can allow you to bring a character concept to life through the support of those mechanics.
how play
#learn-to-play is a good place to start

Hmm ok
how do i make a character
The first four chapters of the basic rules in the bot post above go over character creation.
If you'd like a quick overview, I linked a a 3 minute video that covers that here: #dnd-newcomers message
If you want more an in depth guide, I recommend checking out the handbooker helper series in the bot post above.
Chapter 1: Covers the step by step process.
Chapter 2: Covers 9 racial options
Chapter 3: Covers 12 class options
Chapter 4: Covers the background options.
You don't have to read everything all at once or have it all memorized.
As for how much you need to read, it will depend on what kind of character you are planning to play.
The more complex of a character build you make, the more you'll have to read.
Knowing where to refer to is often more useful than simply memorizing a thing. Read it to get a basic understanding, not with the intent to fully know or comprehend everything. There's no test.
Halflings are what the hobbits are in Lord of Rings.
You can read all about them in the free basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#Halfling
Halflings are non namebrand hobbits
what does the world of dnd even look like
There are multiple settings that all look pretty different
ive looked up maps of “faerûn” where the humans come from
But the one that most people play is the forgotten realms which is a standard western fantasy setting
Humans come from whatever place that setting says. Planescape, Forgotten Realms, Eberron, Greyhawk - each are different.
There are many official campaign setting plus countless unofficial ones (aka "homebrew").
Faerun is a continent on the planet of Toril, which is the base of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting (one of the most popular official campaign settings).
I have no clue how to play any dnd how does it work
so i have to get into a group to make sure where my character comes from makes sense

never used it but it seems decent
Yeah, pretty much every race should speak common. It includes it in their know languages
i was thinking of making my character a human wizard that was an acolyte, but was devoted to a different kind of god
what spells should i learn
You should choose whatever looks fun. Most people would say that you should at the very least have Mage Armor (for a basic level of defense), and a cantrip that can deal damage
Yep take your time looking at options that are available to your character at level 1.
what is an arcane focus spellcasting equipment
Wand, rod, orb, crystal, or staff.
can the staff be the quarterstaff i start with
No.
An arcane focus is a substitute for a component pouch used for Material spell components. A spell that requires material components with gold value and/or are consumed in the casting of the spell are still needed despite using a focus.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#MaterialM
Casting some spells requires particular objects, specified in parentheses in the component entry. A character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in “Equipment”) in place of the components specified for a spell. But if a cost is indicated for a component, a character must have that specific component before he or she can cast the spell.
If a spell states that a material component is consumed by the spell, the caster must provide this component for each casting of the spell. A spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell's material components -- or to hold a spellcasting focus -- but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components.
An arcane focus is a special item--an orb, a crystal, a rod, a specially constructed staff, a wand-like length of wood, or some similar item--designed to channel the power of arcane spells. A sorcerer, warlock, or wizard can use such an item as a spellcasting focus.

I kinda don’t want to make it to op for my freinds
The character won't be OP if you follow the rules (read the first four chapters of the free Basic Rules)
Alright
When it comes to bringing over character concepts to D&D, look past the flavor of classes and abilities and focus on the mechanics.
Doing so can allow you to bring a character concept to life through the support of those mechanics.
If you're new to D&D you're more than likely start at level 1 -- level 1 characters are not OP and if anything they're very squishy.
My friends start the thing at level 3 every time we start a new one
Okay, then everyone will have a sub-class. You're still not going to be OP.
Whatever age you want, theres no real age limit on wizardry (or any class for that matter)
Simply because D&D can often cover more adult themes (violence, for example), its very healthy to make them at least 18. But thats another question altogether I think
I'm pretty new to DND, any suggestions for making a character? Like any guild lines I should follow other than just the standard rules?
Have you read the basic rules?
For character building? Like the stat determinations and other things of the sort?
all of it
I know a good amount of it but I still need to search up a few things when making a character...
Dont use rolled stats
When starting out for practice stick to point buy or standard area
Dont touch multiclassing
If you’re new, i recommend a martial class
Like fighter and rouge?
I have never played D and D but am very very interested any advice?

As for advice.
Whenever you are forming a group, it’s important to ask these questions to help set yourselves up for success.
- What kind of campaign does everyone want to play?
- Linear (The storyline usually follows a cause-and-effect relationship, where each event directly leads to the next.)
- Non-Linear (The storyline that has story events can be done in any order. Think Legend of Zelda games)
- Sandbox (The storyline has no pre-determined events and no overarching plot.)
- How much role-play, exploration, and combat do you want in the campaign?
- 1 social, 1 combat, 1 dungeon encounter per session?
- Perhaps 1-3 social, 1-2 combat, 0-1 dungeon counters per session?
- What is the desired level difficult?
- Easy, medium, hard, deadly?
- How easily and often can characters be resurrected?
- How much of a time commitment does everyone want to invest in the campaign?
- Have the campaign be 3 session? 5-8 session? 12 sessions? 12+ sessions? 1 session?
- Should each sessions be 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours? 2-4 hours?
- Would each session be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- What lines and veils need to be established?
- Lines are hard limits on themes, topics, actions someone doesn't want to engage in.
- Veils are soft limits where themes, topics, actions can be explored but not in great detail.
- Are everyone's preferences and expectations compatible?
- Do all players want to play the same type of campaign?
- Is the the type of game players want to participate in, the type of game the DM wants to run?
hey could someone tell me what dices are for what, ik the d20 is for ability checks and thats abt it
Look at the botpost above and read the basic rules
Very very general answer- the other dice are usually for damage . Some things are more powerful than others , so more sides to the die. d4 for a dagger , d8 for a sword etc …
so the more numbers on a dice, the better the attack?
Then things like healing , hit dice etc… where there are different values needed for dif situations
Basically, if you need something other than the d20, usually your weapon, spell or whatever you're doing includes which die and how many of them to use
Like I said that’s a very general over view , but just keep at it and you will pick up more knowledge. No body knows it all and it takes time 🤠
alr thanks
i only have a week to learn dnd
bc me and my friends are getting together for a session the first time and im dming
so thanks for the help 👍
Ha …just breathe a lot and drink water . Remember it’s a game played for fun. Every body can help each other . It takes a while to get things rolling
Watch some vids too , lots of how to stuff out there
That is exactly the right attitude imo 🤠
yea im making my own dice tower and dm screen from cardboard
Awesome!
I’m not a mod on here … just a dude who likes dnd lol
ik lmao
and btw do you know if there is a session i could join tomorrow as a player to get the feel of it?
Have u checked the channels in here ? There is a LFG , looking for game channel
yea i already did the thing to look for a dm
Patience is important… 🤓takes time to find games . But you allready have a group so that is very cool!
What races go well with what classes or dose it not matter in particular cause I know each race adds modifiers but are there certain sets that work well for certain classes for a beginner?
can someone pls make a really cool jjk campaign
Gojo just comes in and burns ya up at level 1?
But I do think that would be really cool
You should ask your DM first, but you’re allowed to change the ability score increases that your race gives you.
Alright also any advice on how to find a DM and Is it okay to learn as I go I've watched the video and read the rules through a bit but I think I might learn a lot better on the go then again i do have a good general understanding of the rules now. 🙂
Or a campainge looking for newcomers?
You can look through the posts in #looking-for-players, or read through #find-a-game to learn how to make your own post in #750812887697588356
I don't have access to those chats yet other then Find a game but ill read through it right now!!
Oh never mind I see I get access to it from the Find a Game tab
Hello
can anybody recommended what website to used for making a maps
Dungeon or world?
Check the pins in #dnd-maps
both
There are plenty of options, I personally also use Inkarnate and like it a lot but have very little experience with other tools
https://app.dungeonscrawl.com/ This and azgars are my preferred map making tools

I am returning from living under a rock for 10 + years, has the definition of "Munchkin D&D" changed? It was "fun and laughs are more important than anything" , for those who know it the indie film "the gamers" is a perfect example
Munchkin as a term has largely fallen out of the D&D lexicon, but I'm not familiar with the usage you've described. That's something I've seen more commonly referred to as "beer and pretzels D&D" with munchkin being largely replaced by the term "power gamer" and "rules lawyer" and to a lesser degree "that guy"
Lmao the gamers, rise of dorkness
But ultimately, terminology doesn't matter, D&D is and has always been about having fun
What has changed is there's a better acknowledgement that there's no
correct
type of fun as long as everyone is safe and comfortable
Want to have a light hearted dungeon crawl? Go for it!
Super tense political drama? Amazing
Disturbing gothic horror with dark humor? Fantastic
Just make sure everyone is on the same page in terms of expectations, knows what they're getting into, and everyones boundaries are respected
oh wow, that would have been bad, I might have thought I was describing a fun game wile actually sounding like a jerk BIG THANKS
A "fun game" as opposed to what exactly?
a "dark" game or " serious" game, just a short mental tag thing I do
funny is a better word
So "light hearted" or "comedic"?
grins and giggles is what I persnnaly will liky use instead
"Fun" isn't really a tone and you might get some peoples hackles up if you contrast the genre they like to play as being an antithesis to 'fun', albeit unintentionally
yeah thats why I used "munchkin" that equals just for the raw fun of shenanigans for me
so Thank you I know better than to use that one in game descriptions without an explanation ( if it comes up) the game I am working on is serious fun, what will you do with all that power? but thats a topic for other chats 🙂
I’m making my first character on DnDBeyond and the settings are confusing
What’s the difference between milestone and xp advancement? Fixed and manual hitloints?
Milestone and XP advancement are different rules for progression, your DM will tell you which one you're using
Fixed and manual hit points are two different ways of determining how many hit points you gain on levelling up; fixed automatically applies the average, while manual lets you type in a rolled value
The app is making me choose
Milestone and average.
You can change it later if you take that character into a game.
Do you have a DM? If not, then milestone vs XP doesn't matter
No Im literally just making a character
Idk anyone around me who plays
There’s no group at uni, the 2 game shops (warhammer and an independent one) have nobody talking about them
Well generally you make characters for a campaign you've joined
There's nothing wrong with doing it to practice
Good news, there are 195,103 people around here that do.
But the assumption is you have a DM
Oh
Wait isn’t there like an online version of dnd
you can play D&D online using platforms like discord and roll20
That’s cool
Hey there fellas
Im completly new to dnd i know some of the classes races and basics but i never played
Anything you wanna know or talk about then?
I have an obsession with talking about player tools and resources
Not realy
Except for the fact that i think it wouldnt BE a Bad Idea to Press every Button or lever i see
D&D is a cooperative game, so you should always keep in mind how your characters actions will affect the other players, including the DM
Doing random things may be fun for you but might be disruptive to the rest of the group
Okay
On a more serious note, yeah
Party pooper :€
It's important to be mindful of other players
So while everyone is talking about how to approach a situation, don't shout out and attract the attention of the group you're attempting to ambush and squander a surprise round
(This has happened to me on numerous occassions)
I feel Like thats Basic tactical knowlegde
I mean, this isn't even about tactics
It's about not monopolising the game; you are not the only person playing
^
Everyone is an important player and deserves to engage with the game, DM included
It's just good practice to consider everyone
But Warhammer goes Bam Bam Bam:{
While it does go bam bam bam, you get more bam bams by using the squishy pink thing in your head
Oh its spuishy in there?
But yeah, it's generally a good idea to engage with the group on a regular basis
Context and reading the room is important when interacting with the game
and if just reading the vibes of a situation is something you struggle with, or even if not, then just speaking up and asking is a good way to approach things
Communication is the most important thing in D&D
Yeah i guess but i kinda wanna confuse them by First acting stupid and then use my 117 IQ to Smash everything the dm throws at me and my team
Just make sure to not engage with a character like that in a way which ends up being annoying to the group
Hey, i am new to the game and are kinda lost, please help
Whatcha lost with?
Oh gee, that's a big thing to be lost with-
I'm generally not good at such broad asks, so I might have to point you to #dnd-rules for generally learning about the specifics of certain rules, and #character-discussion for help on specifics of how to build a character.
As for a resource that can be helpful, here's the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Don't forget to check pins as well in this channel and the aforementioned channels; I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help.
so just learn this then i will be ready to play?
It's generally a good idea to go through the basic rules and learn, yeah; it's hard for others to teach you everything about D&D, but it's a lot easier to get information out of others when you have specific questions for them. Have a read through and learn what you can, and don't be afraid to ask what certain rules mean.
You'll generally learn more by looking at things yourself, taking things one at a time, and asking specific questions about areas you're stuck with.
ok thank you so much, one last question. I am the only one in my friend group that is interested in giving dnd a try and was wondering how to find a party
#find-a-game / #looking-for-players / #750812887697588356
You should engage with these after learning as much as you can though
Also, regarding the basic rules, this series should be helpful as well:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
These are in the pinned messages btw, and so you should also have a look at pinned messages in this channel, #dnd-rules and #character-discussion
perfect, thank you
Glad I can help.
Sorry I couldn't give more specific help though, but I personally struggle with such broad asks x)
How do I determine the spellcasting attack bonus for a Fairy Blood hunter level 3? I need help for this? Additionally, is attempting to shout and intimidate your opponent you are in engagement with a bonus action?
Spellcasting Ability. Your chosen Hemocraft ability (Intelligence or Wisdom) is your spellcasting ability for your warlock spells, so you use your Hemocraft ability whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Hemocraft modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a warlock spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Hemocraft modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Hemocraft modifier
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/blood-hunter#OrderoftheProfaneSoul
As for bonus actions, only if you have a specific feature that takes a bonus action can you use one (per the rules), so your example would not qualify. Whether an individual DM would rule differently isn't something we can predict.
Welcome back! Adding on to iamrazorwing for your second question, generally when a player attempts to do something that's not in the list of normal actions they have access to, or if they try to do something that necessitates a skill check, it costs them their action.
quick question on how to use DnD beyond and also how to find the spells, monsters and things like that. I'm new to DnD, only heard of it from my dad during dinner once, and watched the movie and seen a bit of Legends of Avantris TvT
What's the question?
How to use DnD beyond because I don't really understand the platform in particular TvT
and also where to find the spells for casting and such
What part of D&D Beyond do you need help using?
never mind, my friend is helping me out with it. Thanks for your concern, appreciate it! 🙂
what's a acolyte TvT
What's the context? Also what does tvt mean?
TvT's just a thing I put for no reason don't mind it, and also the context is ummm me making a character in DnD beyond
No, the context of where you're seeing "acolyte"
background, they give you options to choose and under the options there's one called an acolyte?
Are you asking what that background does or what the meaning of the word "acolyte" is?
the meaning, sorry if I'm confusing you 😅
It's someone who assists in religious ceremonies, it's not a D&D specific word.
ohhh...thanks!
Hey, so I’m completely new to all this. I was wondering if anyone’s doing an online beginner game on discord?
Or looking to start one
Someone that studies with a (typically) religious order or organisation.
There's always #looking-for-players
Folks don't often advertise their games as specifically for beginners, but you could always ask those who post in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community. Or you can post an ad yourself in #750812887697588356 by following the instructions in #find-a-game.
You can also keep your eyes peeled for learn-to-play sessions as part of the virtual weekends in the server's Events tab.
whats up peeps im new to D&D. Looking for anyone that has free time to guide me through the basics and meet more people. i have lil knowledge of it all and have done YT vids but not really clicking i do better if i can ask questions and talk to someone about it.
You can ask questions in this channel about things you are having difficulties with 🙂
Hey guys whats a good multiclass w a Goliath fighter and should I start the multiclass at lvl 4
You probably want #character-discussion
So If i was to somewhat try and find Players for an dnd Party (i know i have to do it on find-a-game) and an dm of course what should i keep in mind while doing so
Do you mean tips for being a DM, or tips for finding the right players?
Forming a party before the DM tends to be more difficult. But if you can find a DM that you get on with, you can certainly look to assist with recruiting a full team.
Scheduling tends to be the awkward part. I'd focus there first. After that it's making sure the gang are all compatible and willing to play the same game.
I have no idea how DND works but I've played a one off or something liek that before and it was really fun.
Question here tho, is being a DM actually fun? You're not like playing actively in the game so like idk

your are playing the game as a DM too. You are controlling everyone except the party after all.
its just a different role to play
Not everyone finds being a DM fun, but plenty of people do
The reason why I want to become a DM is because i'd want to get other friends who aren't into the game into it, however I'm not sure if it'll be enjoyable 🤣
I'm a "forever" DM and I enjoy being a DM more than being a player. I have more fond memories of DMing than playing (I actually don't remember my first PC). As a DM, I get to be creative in possibly creating a world and adventures for my players to participate in. I also get to be roleplay all monsters/NPCs in my world.
Personal bit of advice: it's easier to make long term friends from a D&D group than make a long term D&D group from friends
Ok
Are you a free DM?
Hi there, I had a question about great weapon master. Is it a flat -5 to attack rolls or should I add in the modifiers?
Let's say I have +6 to hit, would it turn into +1 or is it just -5 straight up? I ask because everyone seems to treat the penalty seriously without advantage.
It's a modifier, so you apply it to all your other modifiers
Have your friends expressed interest in D&D? Have they watched actual plays?
I would recommend DMing an one-shot for them to "taste test" what the game may be like.
Nope ive only done one single one-shot 2 years ago but i still remember a good feeling from it
who now?
There are plenty of one-shots you can find on sites like DMsGuild and DriveThruRPG.
Yeah man, thats really fair however i still wanna potentially do some one shots w friends 😃
I don't charge money, if that's what you mean. I mostly run one-shots from time to time.
and whats a one-shot?
A single adventure rather than an ongoing campaign, usually played in a single session.
You'd have more luck looking in #find-a-game than approaching folk at random. Give it a try - just be sure to read the instructions!
alrighty
Hello
ya'll got any guide for leveling for monsters?
like how much more damage should something do for monsters
This is something more for #dm-discussion. Head on over there and we can help you out.
hi
hey could someone teach me how to fill out a character sheet
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
I recommend you read the Basic Rules (the Starter Set has a watered down version).
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
oh alr thx
New to the game, came from the dead by daylight collaboration, what do I do? 🥲
see the bot post 2 messages above? it has everything beginners need to learn about the game
if you got any specific questions, we are happy to answer them
#learn-to-play is also worth reading over!
I just have a lot of questions about the characters I've seen, I do have friends who play dnd bit they are all currently busy atm
For starters, Who is vecna?
An undead sorcerer. Major villain.

Ah, makes sense
I suggested you to read the first four chapters of the Basic Rules so you can understand what you fill out. D&D is more than just the character sheet.

ive played dnd before just not on pc only in person
are you guys fine with me typing through the session
Okay...? You still need to know the rules regardless if you play in person or online.
if not i can try to find a spare mic
oh im still new tho i was just says
Giving personal details, including age, is against server rules, FYI.
Don't mention your age, it's against server rules.
mb
my freind cant type her phone number wont work

are you still up to the game or nah
i did that and no one has responded yet lol
Getting a DnD game set up usually takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. You might need to be a little more patient!

Played alot of TT games over the years but new to the TT side of dnd. Beyond the mentioned above online resources and the boxed starter set I bought earlier today. Are there other resources I should also start looking at?
Are you hoping to be a player or a DM? There's plenty of resources for both
Player to begin with, would sooner learn to play that way than start off as a DM
It's how most people start! Honestly the only thing you really need is the knowledge of the basic rules, a way to roll dice, and a group of friends to play!
good way to go, you'll be a much better DM if you can see the game the way your players are going to see it
If you need more help with the rules, the Handbooker Helper videos linked above are supposedly pretty helpful, and we can answer specific questions here if you've got any
Ty both. 😊
Hello! It's cool to be new to dnd. Actually the truth is that I never played any dnd yet. The real reason i m here is to get ideas and learn about the world beacuse I like to write cool ideas for quests and characters for my friend who is a DM and constantly uses them. I hope I'll enjoy being on this server.
🔥
Welcome

Hello, I’m Faye.
I am interested in playing my first DND campaign, but I’m new. The only knowledge I have of rules and basics is from Baldur’s Gate 3. I want to be able to make my own characters and stuff. And make friends!

Welcome! Baldur's Gate 3 is a good starting point for learning 5e, but you'll have to keep in mind that they made a LOT of changes when translating the tabletop game into a video game. It will be helpful for understanding what's going on, but you shouldn't assume you know how something works because of how it works in BG3.
If you scroll up a few messages, you'll see our bot welcome message, which includes links to lots of helpful resources, such as the basic rules and youtube video guides.
Hey everyone! I just made my first d&d character after watching the movie. I read a lot of fantasy book so very excited to start this adventure 🙂
Welcome
DUNGEEOOONS AND DRAGONNNSS!
Can someone help me learn to play?
We have #learn-to-play and also check the pinned messages here in this channel.
Unfortunately we don't have time/bandwidth to run folks through the game rules one on one. But if you have specific questions after reading through the resources we pointed out to you, fell free to ask here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide)

What'd you like to know to get on the right track?
Hello, I'm pretty much new to d&d with no prior experience other than watching/listening to campaigns in YouTube. I would like to play.
First you should #learn-to-play, then you’ll be able to #find-a-game!
What'd you like to know or talk about first?
Well I do understand how the game works, the rp and combat system. I think the character sheet is very overwhelming though
Where do I find people to play dnd with
For artillerist eldritch cannon, can I make it look like a gun? I wanted to make a gunslinger character with a revolver and it seemed like I can use eldritch cannon to mimic that.
Read #find-a-game carefully as it explain helpful info on how to find a game and important information on how to use our Looking For Game channels.
That’s up to your Dungeon Master, CxS
Omg newbie here myself and absolutely agree with this! The character sheet is sooo confusing 😭
Is there any discord servers here that conducts their sessions via text style?
Is there any free spots I can join
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

have you read the (free) basic rules?
they cover what everything means on the character sheet
if you have and you're still confused, feel free to ask about any specifics here
:P
You should search for “PBP” or “play-by-post” servers. They’re out there!
thank youuu
K thanks
For starting equipment
(a) chain mail or (b) leather armor, longbow, and 20 arrows
(a) a martial weapon and a shield or (b) two martial weapons
(a) a light crossbow and 20 bolts or (b) two handaxes
(a) a dungeoneer’s pack or (b) an explorer’s pack
Do they just pick one of them?
If they start chain mail would they not get anything else?
Do they just start with one item or then four items?
In other words if they pick chain mail, do they not have a crossbow and dungeon pack?
No, you get to take your pick of A or B for each decision point. So you get:
- Either chain mail or…
AND - Either a light crossbow or…
AND…
Etc
What you choose for starting equipment is often reflective of the type of character build you are trying to follow.
That helps a lot.
Then for fighter the starting hit points is just 10 + CON?
I would not have the player roll a d10 then?
If you are playing someone with high dexterity, leather armor with a longbow and arrow will serve you well.
Hit Points at 1st Level: 10 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d10 (or 6) + your Constitution modifier per fighter level after 1st
For new players I often recommend sticking to point buy or standard array for character stats and default HP increases over rolled stats and health to start off with a more balance and consistent character.
Hey ao I'm like brand new to DnD, I played once when I was eight with my brothers, but now I'm older and Wana do it. Where should I start?

Hi hello
Hi

hi ive never played before and im looking for ppl to show me. I'm a Dead by Daylight player and since dnd is gonna be in dbd i figured id give it a try
a game master sounds sick, do they like dictate the game?

Yo! Happy to hear its peaked your interest. The above links are a good place to start learning what D&D is all about, and how to play
We always recommend new players read over the basic rules once just so you have a good frame of reference for everything else. Giving character creation a go is a very good idea too
To play dnd does one need to buy stuff to play or is it for free?
oh nice
I'ven interested in playing the thing for a while
As for being a Dungeon Master. You are essentially the narrator of the story, while the other players act as the main characters
You can jump right into DMing first thing if you want, but it does have a steeper learning curve than simply playing
You can get away with buying almost nothing. The essential items are: Dice, Pen, Paper, Character Sheet, and Snacks
Among these, you probably have pen and paper already. A character sheet can be downloaded for free on the WOTC website, and filled in with info from the free Basic Rules. And there are several browser-based dice rollers available that can substitute a real set of dice
The sourcebooks can be a bit pricy though. If you want expanded character creation options beyond the Basic Rules, its easy to spend a lot of money on them
Hell yeah, i'ven reading the rules, the only thing i dont quite understand its the character sheet or how to create one, i can draw it but not know how to implement it
Imo, this form fillable PDF is good enough
https://media.wizards.com/2022/dnd/downloads/DnD_5E_CharacterSheet_FormFillable.pdf
It won't fill in anything automatically like D&D Beyond's character creator. By doing it manually I feel you learn a lot more about the rules though
The Character Sheet and all the stuff on it will be a lot more clear after you give the Basic Rules a once-over
Im nit sure if i can explain it right but weell look at it as some chance game with math and stats, kinda like the old fallout games but way more complex
Idk if that was a good description
I would recommend trying the site DND Beyond to make yourself a character; it's pretty useful to newer players.
Video Game RPGs, and Table-Top RPGs like D&D are both Roleplaying Games afterall. There are quite a few crossovers
Imma be a human paladin
Thanks man!, gonna be doin this for the night
Id say for the first time pick human, seems the most basic one at least for me
First time playing DnD tonight, and was I painted the worst painting of the game ever. I was immediately trapped upside down, 20 ft in the air, and was a bloody piñata for an hour and a half while my “team” ran around hitting goblins. Are all games like this?
if you multiclass war cleric/barbarian can you still use your channel divinity while you are raging?
...Nnnnooo, and I'm not even sure what was happening in your game.
In situations like this, I would retouch upon session 0- chat with the group about expectations from the game and how you'd like to all play. THings like how silly or serious the game is, how to handle reminding each other of the rules so on. Chat with the DM about if this was fun for you or not.
I believe so. Rage prevents spellcasting, not channeling. Questions like this are perfect for #dnd-rules who can go in depth into the rules as written if needed.
Could I send a character sheet in here? Id like to find dnd games to join but i dont want someone to “wth is this” my sheet
#character-discussion is the place for getting feedback on your character
That being said, generally you make the character after you've found a game
Bet
Can someone give me the run down of dnd
It's a tabletop roleplaying game where there is a Dungeon Master who runs the game world, the non-player characters, and the monsters, and then 1 or more players who play Player Characters, often just called characters
There is a framework of rules that the DM and PCs use to determine if they succeed or fail at challenges that have a risk of success or failure (this is the game element)
Otherwise everyone plays as their character, making decisions based on what they believe their character would do (this is the roleplaying element)
D&D is a specific combination of genres; it's heroic meaning the assumption is that the players will be playing Characters that want to save the world, do good, help people etc
It's fantasy; there are dragons and magic and mythical monsters
It's action drama: challenges are typically conflicts that are overcome through either tense and dramatic scenes, or violence and combat
Is there a reason for making it after?
So it fits the campaign you've joined. The assumption is your character fits into the world
Ah, i assumed the opposite of make one and see if a dm would like it in theirs or not
Davyd I got that but I wanna know how do I properly build a character and where can I role dice online
For example, say you make a centaur artificer with the soldier background. That character wouldn't fit into a world that
- doesn't have artificers
- doesn't have centaurs
- hasn't had any form of recent war
Okay, well that's not a run down of D&D
If you want to know how to build a character, you want to read the first chapter of the basic rules; https://www.dndbeyond.com/compendium/rules/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
As for rolling dice online, there are many places:
- D&D Beyond's digital character sheet
- The Avrae discord bot
- A virtual tabletop such as roll20 or Fantasy Grounds
- Google (you can literally google "Roll 2d20 + 5")
- Dice apps for iOS or Android
Could it work as an almost theme of their character? (Ex: an ex-war character uses their war experience to be crafty and lead?
I don't understand your question
He is saying like could the character theme be an example
Like his vibe is a ex war member
I'll let them clarify their question if that's okay
Could they use their past as skills rather than a backstory? For example the veteran backstory could be used to show agility, stealth, etc
Are you asking if a background can be purely mechanical rather than a literal depiction of their backstory?
Yes
Davyd can u tell me what all I need to know to start playing
No, I cannot
Oh ok
I can tell you where to look: the basic rules (I linked them above)
If so, yes, you have two options
- You can reflavour your background; say take the Soldier background but you're a Mercenary for example
- You can make a custom background using elements from different backgrounds
The point still stands; you're best off making your character after you've joined a campaign so that the character fits the game world
that does not mean you shouldn't make characters as practice, or jot down ideas to pull from
But if you make a full character and become attached to using that character specifically, you will limit your options in terms of finding a campaign
Bet thank you, I like a character I have but also know ill need to adjust depending on the theme
Not just theme, but literal game options
Not every DM allows every single game option
And some DMs apply homebrew or house rules that change fundemental game options in significant ways
What’s a dex save
Dnd just gets more confusing LOL
It's a saving throw that uses your dexterity modifier, as well as your proficiency bonus if you're proficient in dexterity saving throws
What’s dexterity
Yea I am going through the website
In dragon kin they mention dex saves and I got curious
IMO the best way to approach D&D is to read through the basic rules chapters on making a character, using ability scores, and combat
Then try your hand at either making a test character, or reading through an adventure
I have no clue of like, 90% of the rules of dnd but i dont Care, i wanna play
You probably should work on increasing that percentage of known rules a bit, it will make playing easier
Yeah
We do have #learn-to-play and also do check the pinned emssages in this channel - lots of useful links to help get you started with D&D
thanks 🙂
can someone give me a proper fill in character shet
Is there any character donts? For example I heard to try and not do the loner/serial killer characteristics as it can easily make it feel like a “one man show”
What do you mean by "proper fill in"? Do you mean a form-fillable PDF?
If so, you can find sheets here: https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
yea like a character sheet that everyone accepts
There is no character sheet that "everyone accepts"
then whats the most common
Most won't care, but some DMs might only use D&D Beyond, or roll20, or Foundry character sheets
What kind of class matches with dragonborn Race?
It honestly doesn't matter, the character sheet is primarily for your own reference
so can u give me one
Make a character that
- Makes sense in the world
- Has a reason to follow the adventure
- Has motivation to work with the party
- Isn't disrutpive to the game
I just did
Perfect
when, i want like a fillin one
Yes, there are form fillable PDF sheets at that link I provided
Gonna make a paladin dragonborn then
I wasn't replying to your question, I was replying to higrandpa's question about character sheets
You can use any class with any race. So do what's fun for you and fits the D&D game you're playing in.
Oh
Just finished my First character sheet
I am confused about what hit dice are.
A fighter in the basic rules has 1d10 hit dice per fighter level.
What do I record then for each level?
How are hit dice used.
I think its like, How many hits you do on the target?
Ok
Im a dnd dummy so dont take what i say as the 100% truth
Thank-you. I will try to confirm this as the instructions are not clear.
The rule set is confusing.
Your hit dice are used to determine how many Hit Points your character has.
Not really. I think of the term "hit dice" as being exclusively tied to the setting of hit points
A fighter with CON=3 would have HP = 13 for 1st level.
Thank-you
How would I calculate HP for 2nd and so on levels?
They can also be used to regain lost HP points during a short rest
So if you start at 13, when you go to the second level, you roll your hit die, then add that roll, add your CON mod, and get a new total
So you could start with a lower HP?
No, notice that I said ADD to your existing
Start with 13 in your example. Roll a 7. Take 13+7+3 (for the CON) and get new HP of 23
For level 2
I got it.
That is a common mistake -- yopu are not alone! 🙂
Great, thank-you. So many rules for me to learn. It is my first time DMing.
weve all been there
i had played 15 years but never paid attention to all these rules and used first edition with my friend.
I gotta go but will be back with hundreds of more questions!
Welcome back and happy adventuring!
youve been playing as long as ive been alive 😅
Thank-you all
Hey guys. I have a question. I want to make a bard character, but i want him to play an instrument thats different for the default ones. Hurdy gurdy exactly. Is there a way to implement a custom musical instrument into a game or should I ask the DM if its even allowed to do so?
Prob ask the DM
The base instruments are suggestions, for the most part. As mentioned, ask your DM and they'll probably have no issue with it
ok thanks!
Which level spells can i use which level spell slots and how do i get back used spell slots?
You can cast spells using slots for the level of those spells or higher but not lower. So Cure Wounds, a level 1 spell, could be cast using slots at level 1, 2, 3, and so on. Fireball, a level 3 spell, could only be cast using a level 3, 4, 5 (etc.) slot, not a level 1 or 2 slot.
Most classes recover spell slots on a long rest.
Alright how long is a long rest?
Eight hours. If you haven't read the Basic Rules yet, I'd recommend doing so! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
What modifiers do you add for melee and spell attack rolls?
Melee is strength or dexterity depending on the weapon
Spell attacks rolls is your spellcasting modifier, which depends on your class
Hey, I’m very interested in d&d but I’m very new to it and I don’t really know how to play. Can anyone help me?
Attacks are almost always broken into 4 types: they're either melee or their ranged, and they're either weapon attacks or spell attacks.
So you can have a melee spell attack, or you could have a ranged weapon attack, etc.

Hi
Hi
Welcome!
Thanks
Is there a group looking for new players that can play, around 10pm UK would be ideal for me
I have the app D&D beyond too

How is dnd played??
im tryna find out too
Y'all can get a lot of info and helpful links in #learn-to-play
I really wanna play but don’t know like anything abt dnd
Is it possible to buy a separate subclas in ddb? I can't afford to buy the whole book.
It's not anymore, the a la carte feature is not a part of the updated marketplace
😢
The pinned messages in this channel and #learn-to-play should be enough to get your feet under you!
Thx
Hey, i'm completely new to this game and want to play a campaign, The only thing i know is that you roll a D20, bigger number = better
A friend recommended this game to me since we both play DBD and there is a D&D crossover right now
I suggest start playing with close friends and not many, imo it helps newcomers a lot

I only have 1 close friend who plays this game, and i kinda don't want to bother them lol
I mean idk If he plays or not, he just said this is a good game
DnD is fun! Take a look at the bot post above to get started with the basic rules or introductory demo. We've also got #learn-to-play . If you have any specific questions, we're here to help!
If your friend is into the game, chances are they'd be interested in talking to you about it, even if they don't have the time/bandwidth to teach you. You could always ask, though!
Yeah ask him!
Even a one-shot of a couple of hours just to help you learn the mechanics
Rules n stuff always push newcomers away cause of how big the books are and all those numbers and dices etc...
But once you start playing you realize it's actually easy
I suggest asking him to introduce you, just a one-shot adventure to try ; )
Speaking of books, i saw that they cost like 46 euros on D&D Beyond, why are they so expensive???
Art, design, and printing cost money.
hey hello! i'm kinda new-ish (already have a lot of dnd stuff) and i'm realy excited to play with people!
It's a Digi book i'm assuming
They still have those elements, minus printing.
Fair enough
Luckily, the Basic Rules are free: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Ooo thanks, i'll check it out
If you're looking to join a campaign, read through #find-a-game.
Thanks man, i'll try it out
Been DMing mine since april, i'm way too busy with that already
hello everyone! pleasure to be here! 🙂
I'm looking for a quick and easy way to learn how to be a DM as well as the simplest way to teach D&D to my friends; we've all agreed to play D&D but nobody knows how 😛; any directions to a basic crash-course overview would be greatly appreciated!
Grab a starter kit is the fastest.
Great! And where is that exactly? I've just joined so this is all a little new to me, sorry 😵💫
Stores will have them. D&D Beyond also has some free adventures and pre-made characters to use.
If you’re the US at least, most superstore retailers and/or chain bookstores carry starter kits for sale. Amazon does too for online. The big benefit of starter kits is that they are relatively quick to start playing since they contain a premade adventure, dice, pregenerated character sheets (sometime), etc
If you don’t want to spend a good chunk of $ #learn-to-play & this channel’s pins have links for the free basic rules & Handbooker Helper video supplement so you all can learn for free. Of course, doing this method means you’ll need to find an adventure to run. In which case D&DBeyond has some free ones, or you’re free to make your own adventure.
Idk what the Target, Walmart, or Barnes & Noble equivalent is in your country but they’d probably have it
you can get a starter set in gaming stores too.
Have you ever played as player?
hi prob too new to put my point but when i found out ab D&D i too wanted to be a DM . it seemed so cool crafting worlds , gods , places . then I saw a character sheet and got FNAF jump-scared
This is why I prefer digital sheets like on D&DBeyond since it does a lot of the heavy lifting for you and presents it in a stylistic way
a couple of times, and I have an idea of what it's like as a DM
I'm interested in playing 3.5e
I can suggest a perfect small adventure that might help for new DMs cause it's extremely easy and funny to run
I've pitched to my online friend group to have a D&D campaign but I don't feel qualified to actually teach them 😭
Oh please! Do tell!
can I join ? I am looking for someone to play with
Castle defense
Setting: The local lord wants to rebuild a ruined castle and hires a squad to scout the area before sending men to rebuild. The small army of bandits who hides in the area has been butchered by said local lord months ago and is seeking revenge, thinking the local lord would be there, they decide to attack the ruins of the castle where the party is.
It's very fight-focused which helps new DMs a lot
Eh, I'm sorry but its more of a personal friend group, though if I ever consider doing another campaign, I'll be sure to hook you up 😁
alr thanks

oooo!! really interesting, thank you so much! I will be sure to use this at some point!
If folks are looking for games to join, you're probably much better off going to our dedicated group finding channels, rather than asking random folks and crossing your fingers
ye sorry my bad . didn't see it
Put a couple of friendly npcs: local lord's men, at the beginning so that they can interact with players. Make each one different so you can practice with voices or voice acting. Said npcs will ask who the players are, and will also give a small introduction
Make players arrive one at a time, so the narration can be dynamic. I made one come from the road, one was already in the castle with the lord's men and one was sent scouting the area
it's very easy cause you need 2 or 3 enemy sheets for the basic enemy: melee goblins, melee orcs, archer goblins (in my case) give them ac, hp, and damage, that's it. I called the bandit's army "the 100 fangs" and yeah i made the party kill 100 of em
Lovely idea! Already adding these to my notes-
However, I think this is straying off-track; I cannot begin conjuring ideas when my friend group doesn't know how to play in the first place
How do I teach them to play in the simplest way possible? where can I guide them to so they can make their characters? how do we facilitate the roleplaying over discord? These are the questions I'm seeking answers to.
for context: they have heard of D&D, but are virtually clueless on how to play it
it is not a problem with the story, setting, tone, NPCs, or characters; we have enough creativity and wit for those things
The structure is: small intro with the setting,
problem: the first workers are not here yet, the lord's men tells you/ one of the lord's men in the ruins is missing /there's blood tracks on the road to the castle
buildup: search the missing workers/ find the missing man/ investigate the tracks on the road. Each leads to the enemies who are scattered before surrounding the castle
complication: the army arrives, the party is now united while first they were separated
climax: fight the enemies, use the castle map to make a few, just a few fight arenas
The first thing you'll need to accept is that all these things will start off rocky and get better over time. No one's ever 100% prepared when they first start, no matter how much prep you facilitate for them.
Other than that, getting them excited about the game should be your best bet! An excited player is one who engages with the story and their character, and is one who goes out of the way to learn the rules and interactions.
we are very excited to start (we just finished exams 😅 )
Do you know the rules yourself?
epilogue: boss fight, give him lots of HP but not much AC so that the fight is more fluid, give him a few minions to help with the action economy otherwise it'd be a whole group vs 1. Allow every player to make at least a couple of actions against him. When it's over i ended the thing with the ruins burned by the 100 fangs, the local lord arriving and basically scolding them while whining cause rebuilding will be more expensive n stuff
...a little? I don't have anything on me at the moment, I might have forgotten some. Besides, we've elected to do 3.5e which I've never played
Fair. I think a single, simple scenario is the way to go. Matt Colville's "Delian Tomb" is good for this (as are others). Give them pre-generated characters to just get them used to looking at and interpreting the character sheet, instead of learning how to build it. (That can come later.) Tell them about relevant rules or options as they come up, rather than front-loading it at the beginning.
This video by the DM Lair might give you good food for thought: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzn9FaM1jz0
That does complicate things a little bit. We can point you to all the resources for 5th edition here, but older legacy editions have their own vibes and playstyles which DnD 5e has moved away from.
fair enough, I might even suggest using newer versions for simplicity sake, though they'll have to agree with me on that one 🙃
oh thank you so much! This was what I needed 😅
This one from Halfling Hobbies also has some pragmatic advice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fEQxSXEyDw
Happy adventuring!
Thank you again! Oh and one last question: since we're online, how do I get them to obey their turns and roll dice (without cheating)?
You could use a virtual tabletop where dice rolls are visible to everyone. Roll20 and Owlbear Rodeo are both free; I prefer Owlbear for its simpler learning curve.
As the DM, you just say, "It's your turn" or "You ask to roll, and if I say you can, then roll. Anything outside of that doesn't count."
The short answer to "How do I solve problem X?" is "Talk to your players as people."
how do I ensure they are rolling honestly?
In addition, if you make a campaign in D&DBeyond and have your friends join it, character sheets assigned to the campaign have their rolls logged. If you use discord, you can get a dice bot as well.
Again, you can use a digital platform where the rolls are visible to everyone so they can't lie. But if you're playing in person—and even if you play online—you should establish that trust is important. If they're lying about their rolls, there's no hope the game will go well and they don't get to play.
true true, fair enough, thanks for now! 😁
As a new player I keep messing up my rolls/and or forgetting what bonuses to add to attacks/saves
It’s kind of discouraging but I hope I get better at it
Friends of mine having been playing for over 20 years. You'll never not make mistakes, so try not to sweat it too much.
The hope is to make them less often.
I try not to but I always tend to dwell on things when I mess up, in real life and in game
try to make a flowchart for your most commonly used abilities
An easy thing to do is to keep a simple calculation in view! If you know your bow attack is always going to use your Dexterity modifier (+4) and your proficiency bonus (+2), then write
Bow: 1d20+6
somewhere. Do the same for a couple of your common rolls, and you'll be saving time in no time!
highlight Strenght,Dexterity,Constitution,Intellignce etc... with different colors on the sheet with their respective others like Acrobatics, Arcana, Insight, Nature etc
It helps memorizing where the +1 +2 -1 go when you roll the dices
But also makes the sheet look like a rainbow lol
Is there a reason why I can't find Hexblade after downloading Xanathar's Guide?
Also, why are my paladin oaths limited to just devotion?
#ddb-support could be that your book hasnt been synced yet
Ty
I think there's another reason for my paladin oaths. In another character that's level 5, it has oath of vengeance, conquest, etc.. but on my level 3 it's just devotion.
character level 3 or paladin level 3?
Paladin 3
well then idk
#ddb-support is for assistance with D&D Beyond.
I'm DMing a discord DND campaign. I have played one before, but never DM'd. For the group of us that are playing, the flexibility of being able to access/participate it at any time is really valuable. What I want, however, is to make sure it remains engaging. Has anyone DM'd one before that has some good tips for me?
Your question is really suited for #dm-discussion!
alright thanks!
hi! I’m joining a new campaign with a barbarian and a bard, are there any classes that anyone would recommend for “filling the gaps”? :) any advice/ recommendations would be appreciated!! :)
You should be fine to play whatever you want. You can never go wrong with a big-blaster-caster, but you really don't have to worry about archetype roles. You can play anything you think would be fun
Mods ask that you keep recruitment to the appropriate LFG sections.
That's not an excuse to bypass server rules
okey dokey bye bye
New groups tend to fizzle often due to different expectations.
When forming a new group, I recommend asking things questions to improve compability.
People ask the same questions frequently enough that some of us have text prepared to copy and paste.
oh also we didnt fizzle it was a 3-4 four player group one randomly blocked me in the first hour after being added to the group one blocked me for spamming after i sent 3 msges in an hour and one stayed and is chilling in my server with me
o dopedie dope

Any tips for not being nervous at your first time as a DM?
Do you know your players already?
Yep
First session is in 2 days but I somehow start to get the same feeling as when I'm about to give a presentation in school. And I hated doing that
Well, they know you're new to DMing so they should be patient with you.
Take your time, breathe, and drink plenty of water.
I've been DMing 40+ years and I still get anxious at the beginning of every session.
I'll keep those in mind, thanks.
I think I'm most stressed about not understanding a rule correctly and then someone being mad at me for something
I don't think anyone will be mad at you! When my DM was just starting, we'd get rules wrong sometimes. If it happened we'd just note what went wrong and just do it right in the future. If you like the misunderstanding more, then that's a house rule.
-
never feel bad about taking a time out if needed
-
the DM is always right. If an extended argument or research will break up the flow, rule best you can and move on. Further discussion can be done at a break or post game
-
YOU run the show at the end of the day, with the goal of the protecting the table’s experience. Everyone is here to have fun.
We all make mistakes. You don't need to memorize all the rules -- the rulebooks are there to be referenced. Google "dm cheat sheet" and print it out.
also, you are god. Give your players leash to be creative or exploratory, but if you need to adjust plans, make the adjustments. They dont know, you do. Snap your fingers and they’re always going where they need to go
Oh right, cheat sheets! Probably will do that one
Thanks for the tip guys. And sorry for slow responses, am playing smash bros rn
looking for someone to play with is hard, let alone someone to help newcomers
and so i come for yall for HALP

We can try to help! The usual recommendation is to use the link above to check for games that might be advertised as 'newcomer friendly'. That being said, plenty of games that don't say that are still happy to take new players. Just be upfront about your lack of experience to the DM when you reach out to them
My message here covers a few options: #dnd-newcomers message
Hi, i cant find text only groupn
thanks!
I would also refer to the same message I made here: #dnd-newcomers message
For Play By Post groups, I would point you to the play by post thread on the dnd forums here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/d-d-beyond-general/play-by-post

ya think there's many people out there willing to take in... younger players?
i see a lot of players not liking the idea of playing with underaged players and it breaks my heart to see all my chances turn to dust
Schools, Libraries, and Local Tabletop Shops host youth dnd groups.
that's the problem, there's none of those things in my area so i have to resort to playing online
There is also the option of building a local community yourself.
You'd be surprised how many people in an area want to play dnd.
worth a shot..
Ultimately this comes down to ensuring safety.
This is why youth dnd programs are made.
Check your local Facebook D&D groups.
Question about proficiency bonus. Because I always manage to read things in separate ways. If the description says
Level 1: +2
Level 2: +2
Level 3: +3
That means the proficiency bonus stays at 2 until level 3, right?
Yes
Thanks
welp, just checked on facebook as has been suggested to me, and yet no luck
Check this table for the Proficiency Bonus for each (class) level:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
I mean they could have removed the "+" in front of every number lol
Can't wait to make our next campaign use exp instead of milestones
These things take time.
Keep doing what you can at your own pace.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
The Proficiency Bonus is a modifer, hence the +
That I understand. But once you understand that you add it to your rolls you could remove the +. Because I read it as "+2 to your current proficiency" at first
Okay...
Which would be broken
But you can't be sure enough about stuff like that
Speaking of broken, I heard monks can be pretty broken?
That's not a newcomer topic
Stuff being
broken
is more a discussion for #optimization
didn't realize how hard it was to find a game
A huge influx of players, not as many DMs, trying to coordinate schedules and determine compatibility—it's a wonder games ever do happen!
It's not that hard to find a game. It's hard to find a quality game with good players and a fixed schedule
While it unfortunately is not as easy as I'd hope it would be.
Often it's HOW someone is tries to find a game that will yield various levels of success.
I was lucky that last year someone asked in a WhatsApp group "anyone interested in DND"?
And now, one year later and 3 sessions later I'm the DM now
Welcome.
If you are new to dnd feel free to ask here.
I also recommend taking the time to check out id:customize to find channels that cater to your interests.
Nice.
Congrats on running your own games now.

I mean we're still dependant to the guy who asked because he is the only one with a big enough location for 4 players + DM. Or is it always "the DMs game"?
What do mean by "is it always "the DMs game"?"
It's everyones game; the DM can't play without players and the players can't play without a DM
If you ever need another place, game shops and libraries are good places for game sessions.
I meant because zero405 said "congrats on running your own games now"
Libraries for a group of guys laughing about everything doesn't sound like the best idea
That's just the syntax of describing DM'ing
Ohh
You're running your own game, you don't run someone elses
It doesn't mean anything important
Fair enough
Maybe not out in the open spaces but you can reserve rooms.
One of my local libraries hosts dnd games and they get a pretty decent room that provides space for 3 groups.
If only my local game store wouldn't close at 6pm I would ask them lol
It may not be your only option.
To keep the focus on topic for this channel.
There are a lot of legally free resources for newcomers available at their local libraries.
Some even have D&D books you can check out.
I'll check them out. But we will only meet at players location anyway because he's basically in the middle of everyone's location
Welp, it's getting late. Thanks for the advice. Was fun talking to everyone
I think I’ve been accidentally screwing myself over during times where I have to make a wisdom saving throw
If I could get some help real quick I’d appreciate it
help how?
Ok so when I’m asked to make a wisdom saving throw, I’ve been looking at my wisdom modifier in my ability scores, which is a -1
But when I look at my saving throws , it says +7
I kind of just noticed that I might have been using the wrong thing
I’ve been applying that -1 to my wisdom saving throw rolls
are you a paladin or something
But is it the +7 I need?
well yes
Yeah
if it says +7 at saves then its +7
Ah haaaa… I feel dumb
We’re actually all lvl 14 but I jumped on super late so I may as well be low level
What?
yeah read your features especially when jumping in at higher levels
I joined a campaign late
You should be the same level as everyone else.
I am
But I’m just saying I feel like I should be way lower
...
Since I jumped on so late and I’m a new player
in terms of proficiency in how you pilot your character?
That doesn't matter what the player's experience is.
Just my lack of experience yeah
theyre not talking literally im pretty sure
I know that I’m just saying I feel like I’m playing catch up basically
Then perhaps not join a game that is high level if you're new to D&D? Higher levels have more options which can be overwhelming for new players.
It was the only game I could find
¯_(ツ)_/¯
Well I guess you can jump into the deep end of the pool and learn to swim one might say
Anyway, if your class is proficient in Wisdom, such as cleric or paladin, then you would add your Proficiency Bonus to your Wisdom saving throw.
So I’m gonna ask a question I have asked a few times already in the past, but this is the last time because I’m gonna make a flowchart. When I attack as a level 14 paladin, just a basic greatsword attack, what bonuses are applied
I personally don't recommend having either Wisdom or Constitution as your "dump" stats.
who knows theres a lot ofoptions you can take as a paladin that change this but at base its pb +strenght
d20 plus your PB plus your Str modifier.
All attack, saving throw, and skill check rolls start with a d20 roll.
You said "greatsword attack" hence my answer for the attack roll of d20 + PB + Str modifier.
Ok
I’m sorry if I’m sounding like a dummy lol
I feel like I’m making this way too hard
Yes, and this is why I think you're going to be going over your head with a level 14 PC.
Good luck.
But don't feel bad asking questions both with your gaming group (assuming their decent folks and willing to help out) and here.
damage roll is 2d6+str+misc
Take your time figuring out what are the things you are struggling with.
Then collect resources, tools, and guides that will best help you.
Whether it's a visual combat guide that can be found on the dmsguild website, buying or making your own spell cards, or going with a character build that is easier for you to manage.
I would strongly suggest reading the basic rules thoroughly and watching whatever tutorial videos BEFORE joining any game much less a high level one
Dnd is inherently a group activity. While a table may give leeway to help a new player it should not be expected to be unlimited
I guess my eagerness to jump in and play bit me in the butt
You sadly cant just "jump in" in ttrpgs
theirs a lot of prior learning
Which is why its a pretty niche community, most new people just want to get to the clicky clacky endorphin rocks part, and not go throught the learning required, which is understandable
Making a notecard for myself ||
- Attack roll: attacking with greatsword so I’m proficient with it, add prof. Bonus to d20 roll
- rolling for damage: weapons listed damage plus strength modifier
I have had loads of players jump right in at my tables, I remember being new myself afterall
This is accurate correct?
(This is just my card for melee attack)
Wait don’t paladins do bonus radiant damage on melee attacks after lvl 11?
d20 + PB + appropriate modifier (Str for melee weapons, Dex for ranged weapons, Str/Dex for finesse weapons).
Yes that would be extra damage provided by their Improved Smite feature
And that’s for all attacks and not just smite?
Improved Divine Smite is separate and different from Divine Smite.
It also only applies to melee attacks (not ranged or spell attacks):
Whenever you hit a creature with a melee weapon, the creature takes an extra 1d8 radiant damage.
Yeah figured it was just for melee
Is there a reason you dont want to use a character sheet? Theyre free and have spots for all this
Oh I do have a character sheet
I just write a lot of notes
Yeah I understand now that the way I joined this game probably didn’t help me much being a new player, but I’m not just gonna leave, it’s the only in person game I have right now
What are good tutorials to get into D&D?

Brand new to D&D, my knowledge goes as far as brief pop culture references. Please point me in the right direction to get started like I was 5. Thank you. 😅
Check the links above.
Thank you.
Are there multiple versions of D&D?
yes there are
The most popular and current would be 5e or 5th edition. That is what most people play on currently
If you have any questions about it feel free to ask. Remember no question is a stupid question!
Is eating dirt bad?
That probably depends on the dirt.
Well last time i did i had worms
That probably also depends on your class too
