Its on the dnd adventure club website as a PDF that I printed off. I looked at D&D website but the premade ones are level 1 or 9. D&D beyond is all behind a paywall
Did you make your level 2 characters, or were they made for you?
It was premade on the website.
I tried to find similar charater at level 5 and swap numbers around but they had abilities in areas the charter we are using do not. So I figured that wasnt a good way to go.
What's your class?
I can change the PDF to JPG and post it. The class was human warrior
You can't share images directly in the server, but you can post it to a site like Imgur and then link to it with a brief explanation of what you're linking to!
This is my charater Jill the Giant Slayer https://static1.squarespace.com/static/607f5748345e8741490a3648/t/656e32029a8843116027b78b/1701720580412/DnDAC-Jill-the-Giant-Slayer.pdf
This is the charater my son played Snikers the Kobold https://static1.squarespace.com/static/607f5748345e8741490a3648/t/63e8561168a49912f470cc3e/1676170771125/DnDAC-Snickerz.pdf
Those are simplified character sheets, so they don't have space for the abilities you'd get after level 2.
Was the event you played part of the Adventurers' League?
Excuse me, but my friend is trying to make a cleric character, and we're both a little confused on how the spells work? What's the difference between learning a spell and preparing a spell? On DND Beyond when you select spells, some of them say prepare and some say learn, and I'm a little confused on it? How exactly does preparing a spell work?
I've read on preparing spells in the handbook, and I'm still confused on it.
Some classes, like cleric, have full access to their class spell list of an appropriate level. A level 1 cleric "knows" all of the level 1 cleric spells. But they can only prepare a limited number to actually cast.
Other casters know a limited number of spells; what they know is what they can cast. Wizards are an oddball exception, but no reason to get into that here.
D&D has 2 different types of spellcasters, learned casters and prepared casters. This is dependent on your class.
Oh okay! Thank you for the CLERIC-fication-
Sorry that was bad, thanks for the answer though!
I understand now
Think of "known spells" as books in your personal book shelf while "prepared spells" are the books you can carry with you in your backpack.
Ah okay, gotcha gotcha
Theres a bunch of different spellcasting rules for each spellcaster
For cleric, you have access to A L L the spells from the unlocked spell level
And each long rest, you may choose a number of spells equall to your wisdom mod+your cleric level
You prepare those spells and can use them during the day
Also, little thing that a bunch of new players hesitate on,you CAN use the same spell multiple times as long as you have spell slots, its not a 1 time use thinggy
Hello im new to DnD how can i get started

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful links and resources to get you started, and you can find even more detailed guides in our #learn-to-play channel. After you've taken a quick glance through the basic rules, let us know if you have any specific questions. We'll be more than happy to help
Hey, me and some friends want to start playing dnd. We got no real Knowledge and dont know people who have so got to ask here. What do we need to buy to start playing? Im not on low budget on the moment so I got no problem spending money. Just gotta know whats recommended for newbies. I dont even know the difference between the Adventure books and those Monster add ons. Heard of the multiverse of Monsters and that it got all the races tho, so maybe thats something Id buy.
Getting started is free!
Nah, everything got its price
The Basic Rules are completely free, online. The basic rules include 1 subclass for each class, so your character creation options are limited, but if you just want to try the game out before spending money, that's a good way to do it.
But if you are ready to buy some books, the Player's Handbook is usually the first and most important purchase. That contains all of the basic rules I just mentioned, but also a much wider array of different player options for your race, class, subclass, etc. The most in any one book actually.
Then, if you really want to jump in the deep end, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanathar's Guide to Everything also has some fantastic options for your subclasses. Tasha's even includes the 13th class: Artificer
Monsters of the Multiverse has a lot of playable race options, that is correct. It also has a lot of monsters, for the dungeon master to use. But the most important purchases for the dungeon master are the Monster Manual and the Dungeon Master's Guide.
Oh and don't forget, everyone needs dice. You can use digital dice for free, but physical dice come is a wide array of designs and price ranges.
Same here, but im a solo mate, trying so see what people post and here to ask for help
Where can I find the right character sheet?
Same
What about Figurines? Are they necessary?
best place for rules and advise?
Miniatures and physical battle maps are completely optional
Hello!
Is it worth it tho?
hi friend š«”
If you'd do sessions y not get some pics from the internet?
Good day to you 2 brother in arms
Depends. They are more of a show piece than an actual game function. When I first started playing, we used a chess board and chess pieces as a battle map
And obviously, you can only use minis if your playing in person. Online play uses digital battle maps, called VTTs (virtual tabletops)
Ye, I like to meet irl
I am confused already, goodbye
Yeah could take an I pad or print them it's cheaper
Are you trying to learn how to create a caracter like me and how to build a caracter sheet ?
Aight, in that case im gonna make them diy origami. Thats something I know well. Are "Tashss Cauldron and Xanathars Guide" Adventure books?
Yeah and where I could get the right one from the internet
They are source books, not adventure books
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
I got mines from here.
5th Edition Character Sheets to be more precise
Oh Ic thanks
Np mate, here to help
What would you create first I think building it after a existing character would probably be easier for the first time
Whats the difference? Why do I need a source book? Why do I need an Adventure Book?
Why not have a look through the classes first, see what sounds fun?
Source books contain rules and character options to enhance your game. Adventure books are prewritten adventures for your characters to go on.
Adventure books are specific for Dungeon Masters (DMs) to run. They're not for players.
Source books contain rules and monsters for DMs and stuff for players, such as playable races, sub-classes, feats, and spells.
Well, i know what class and race i want, but dont know the rest, I want a Elf thief, the rest im completely disoriented/lost. dont know what to do š
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
What kind of Idiot would buy a pre made Adventure in an rpg game?š Thanks for the help, will buy a source book instead
I think you'd need a DM now to plan ahead?
It's encouraged to at least go through the process of making a character for practice before you find a game.

Thank u
Are you a DM to help me ?š
Nah can't have 0 exp
Is there any dm who hosts games for only new players? I havenāt played dnd ever before but I would love to get into it
Yes, that's what I'm trying to do, I'm afraid of putting points where I shouldn't, having skills that I shouldn't have or the skills themselves (adding values) being wrong
Check #find-a-game
Maybe just wing it and take what sound interesting
Are you writing it out on paper or using D&D Beyond?
if you by any chance would like to play it me at any given time so he can learn this together i would like very much
Yeah sounds fun
What would be the most useful language to choose as a half elf?
https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets
I got mines from here.
5th Edition Character Sheets to be more precise.
But dont know how to build it.
but if D&D Beyond is more easy and helpfull for new player i would give it a try
Is the Multiverse of Monsters necessary, if u wanna have all race options?
Depends on where your party will be. Could be dwarvish, could be Undercommon.
Which edition should one start with?
The current game is 5th edition. It is currently the most popular and supported.
Ic thx
Should you role you're stats for the first time or should we take a certain amount of points and distribute them like we wish?
The standard array is 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
For a practice character I'd recommend it over the other methods.
Some people don't have the free time to do the worldbuilding. Encounter balance is a sense that gets honed through experience, so a pre-written adventure can deal with that for you. If you're just learning the game, having a pre-written adventure lets you focus on trying to learn the "how to run a game" pieces instead of the "how do I write an adventure" pieces.
And they aren't only just for learning. They're also just fun stories. Some DMs and Players just prefer using something prewritten, even if they are veterans
My Father is an autor and Proofreader and I grew up with storytelling. I write adventures automaticly. Understand that others might not tho, thanks for the help.
Writing a story is not the same as writing an adventure though because it involves gameplay mechanics.
They're related, but the Venn diagram is not a circle.
Its the same principle tho
Why are the dnd books so expensive by the way? Like over 200 Bucks for the 2 Essential Bundles doesnt sound that fair
Not necessarily. Prose stories are linear. D&D adventures can be fluid, changed by the players and DMs as they go back and forth.
I've thrown out stuff I had planned because my players decided to do something else so I had to improvise.
Still you gotta have fun doing and be creative and for both
Sure.
Like I said - they're related skills, but the Venn diagram between the two is not a perfect circle.
WotC recently increased the MSRP of the books a few months ago.
D&D is a game played in the imagination, so the rule books are literally the only product the game designers have made. They need to make a living somehow
I dont think theyd need to move under the bridge if the bundles were 30% cheaperš
D&D can be cheap as you want it to be (free Basic Rules, borrowing books from your DM/friends) or as expensive as you want it to be (I've spent thousands over the decades I've played).
The physical books are of decent quality and are handy to own
You are by no means expected to buy everything
I do believe that the PHYSICAL versions are worth it for some one that plays actively
Ye I share that view
Yall tried Traveller before?
I prefer physical because I own them indefinitely and you don't really own the digital version but lease (they're gone if and when WotC/D&D Beyond decides to kill the servers).
#non-dnd-topics for non-D&D TTRPGs.
I have only ever used digital books, but I honestly couldn't imagine using physical ones while playing. That would make it so hard to find information quickly
I can appreciate physical books for their novelty, but they don't seem practical to me
Physical books for collecting.
Digital books for easier reference and convenience.
Doesnt feel that magic with a phone in ur hand tho, does it
I would use digital if I could really truly own them
I mean, I also only play D&D online, so I am already sitting at my computer when playing
Especially after WotC made Volo's and Mordenkainen's "Legacy" and stop selling them on D&D Beyond, I'm glad I own the physical versions.
Makes sense
But there is no world where wotc will release pdfs
This is moving out of #dnd-newcomers territory and into #dnd-discussion territory.
Anyways joosh use basic rules and if you become a committed player/dm buy the players handbook
Can a complete newbie be a Dm?
Yes
Yes
Its a lot of extra work, but its certainly achievable
Study a little first
All DMs were newbies at one point.
Is a 200⬠Investment worth it as a Beginner? My friends are pretty blank rn but I save alot.
I dont wanna waste my money on one of the beginner sets, cause theyre useless at some point
Play with the free Basic Rules. If you like it, then put money in, but don't do that if you haven't experienced the game at all.
You could start off with the Basic D&D PDF, if you are not totally sure D&D (or 5e) is for you. You will also find lots of free resources like maps and adventures online.
Aight thats enough information for the start. Thank yall for the help, im gonna leave the server now.š
You can put the server on mute, if you want to take a break from it. š
thx
Hello just landed lol. I'm just here to observe and hopefully I'll be able to play at some point

Not sure it this is where I ask this if I wanna vent or ask for advice but I feel like I'm messing up too much in the game l'm in to where I'm scared the other players find me as more an annoyance instead of help, like I miss some opportunities for my charecter and what not and do or forget about something that makes the situation worse, anyways I'm just scared I'm being a bad PC to the party and dragging them down and just making the experience worse for everyone anyways what do u guys think I should do
Dnd is a collaborative game. If you feel something needs to be addressed, talk to your table
Now, there are always things a player can do to improve, and it starts with preparation.
Mechanically, do you study your sheer? Can you find the things u need to find quickly? Do you have a way to track resources (hp, spell slots, limited use abilities) and effects (advantage? Fear? Charm?)
Character wise, have you thought about the fundamentals of your character?
Motivations, long/short term goals, flaws, relationships, values, personality
these are all things you can do yourself, and come to the table equipped to act accordingly and efficiently
If theres table dynamics that need to be addressed, that is a conversation
Hi everyone! How does one go about posting in the #750812887697588356 channel?
In any channel where you have permission to type, type /looking and select the appropriate choice. Hit enter. You'll be taken to a form to fill out, and the bot will post in the channel you selected.
Thank you!
Next I need to find how I get permission to type! I'm a newbie.
Is there a way I can spectate a game?
Type in any channel where you can type. That's all.
Games don't happen here but you can find plenty on Twitch and YouTube.
Sorry for the long and late reply, I think mechanically Iām fine since I have DnD beyond that does most of the work for me, charecter wise I think my PC has an alright backstory with goals, flaws, and pros.
The main problem I think is I just make bad decisions from time to time or I forgot about something important.
For example I kinda have the morbid curiosity killed the cat type thing where I kinda get sidetracked with it and forget about the plan for example when me and another pc went through a different entrance than planned and I opened a chest that said ādo not openā it was a mimic and I ended up being the cause of one of the players dying early on and Iām just never seeing the end of it and Iām still feeling horrible about that.
Another time was I had a key that would describe the plan to us when put into an egg thingy but I forgot about the key in our discussion and was blamed for letting the bbeg helper get away and failing the mission and kinda having their newly acquired pets left in the area where they probably canāt get em back.
Most recently I couldāve saved a hostile pc and de escalated the situation but I sort of played my cards too late and instead of having the PC knocked out and explaining then like I planned, the pc ended up exploding and dying when I probably couldāve prevented it if I was in the frontlines where theyād have seen me.
Anyways Iāll have a discussion with my fellow players and see where I go from there. In the meanwhile what do u guys think on how I can avoid making such dumb mistakes? Any suggestions or advice for now would be great and very needed
Also does it sound like I really gotta reevaluate how I play and what I do or is this something you guys think will get better with experience?
Forgetting the plan, ignoring authority, forgetting about plot devices, losing pets, PC death, and being terrible at taking hostages are some of the most commonly experienced tropes. These are just par for the course for adventurers and should in no uncertain terms ever be something to feel bad about. You're all good, nothing to appologise for or feel bad about. You are overreacting.
Is there a channel with small tutorial or something about what is dnd if it's fun and how it's work or it's too long and complicated and stuff? Came in server like few minutes ago

Hello I'm new to the game I only heard some podcast and I liked the idea I have ALMOST no knowledge of the game all I know is someone is telling a story and the others are living it(playing it) so I want some help with rules and where can I play it ONLINE if possible.
Thank you.
Check out the links above.
Thank you
Sure hope thatās itās just a bit of social anxiety and nervousness on my part lol.
Anyways Iāll talk with my group and hope thatās the case, still I canāt help but feel like Iām to blame for a lot of these things but itās reassuring to know itās mostly normal stuff that Iāll get better with the more I learn how table top dnd is, thx for the reassurance
The shop we went to just has an open D&D night. The campaign we were in had been going on for a while. It was a lot of fun and everyone was happy to help us learn.
The way I am so undecided that I can't even get past choosing character in Introductory demo and Have been googling and thinking for entire half of hour
Thats alright, its just a game. Nobodies going to ban you from the dungeons and dragons if you dont complete the demo in a set time
Wich class is most lazy. Easiest. Not pure evil but not pure good?
You wrote that big message and deleted it or something else deleted it?
There is "lazy" in a class. It's all in how you play the character.
A class is just an adventurer's profession.
The way Rouge and Barbarian/fighter seems like pure Evil. Cercic and Paladin sounds like pure good. And Magician seems just complicated as it's fun to spell and stuff but probably need yo be smart and stuff to learn them since it's seems to easy to throw spellls outta nowhere and all are drawed as old also running out of mana not seems good. All those seems like you need to be very specific and skilled or morally in one thing
What does it mean?
There is no alignment restrictions to classes in 5E.
What is 5E
Wich one's? There's like few
There is only one Basic Rules.

While I highly doubt you read all the rules in a few minutes, just a reminder that you don't actually need to read all of them before playing. But you really should read over the character creation steps. You can always try and making a practice character by yourself before joining a game.
And what is practice character?
(It's 1:26 and I don't really use much of a brain anymore my eyes closing)
Might be best to sleep then, this server isn't going anywhere š
The basic rules describe the basic mechanics of each class.
As you were asking before, and as the basic rules state, classes are analogous to professions (I.e fighter, Wizard). More literally they are mostly discrete sets of mechanics that help play into a specific fantasy niche.
While the martial classes are generally regarded as easier to learn (fighter, barbarian, rogue, and monk), the best class for you to start out with is the one that seems most interesting to you.
Literally that. A character done to get experience with the character creation process, not for a specific campaign.
I urge you again to go through all of the materials linked in the bot post above
But early I won't think either with sun blinding my eyes and in afternoon I may be busy with baking with granny maybe so If I have to think of too much random bullshit I prefer to get tired now
Take it little by little then. The best learning is done when you are actively engaged and interested in the material. No need to strain yourself and cram the rules of D&D 5e this instant
To be honest.
Why there isn't something to help you like learn or how to become someone instead learning about someone you already choosed to be?
I mean. You aren't born as Magician or barbarian or rogue or paladin since you was literally born but you become it after time isn't it?
Iām not sure what you mean tbh
I'm not certain what you are asking. Are you wanting to play a character who is not even level 1?
The links above are to help new players learn the rules of D&D and how to play.
You generally make your own character yes. That doesnāt mean your character has to be born as X or Y class. Again, classes just represent the profession or fantasy archetype you want your character to be.
Again, classes are professions adventurers take up.
(Kung fu panda moment lol
Again, these resources and the ones in #learn-to-play can help. But we can't help you if you don't use them.
But if you choose class you can't change it right? When you become rouge you can't choose to be magician but stuck as rogue isn't it?
And that's is?
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
YouTube won't help me as I'm not even english.
It's literally pain to translate everything already
Classes represent the skills you have learnt and know.
You don't really ever forget those skills, but you can learn new ones.
A rogue will still know how to do the rogue things they learnt, but could then also learn how to become a wizard.
Multiclassing is when you take on levels in another class than the one you started with. In general there are no rules for respecing, if you are unhappy with the class you chose, you might want to talk to your DM about changing classes or characters
I'd suggest sleeping at this point, and then taking your time to work through the resources linked for you.
For example, you might have a level 8 character that has taken 4 levels in Rogue and 4 levels in Sorcerer.
And yeah I agree, sleepiness is not conducive to learning
Can like. One class be every class but simply not have the Core Powers and Bonuses? Like. Not be as powerfull as exact character is but have some of it's stuff? Like no need have all of it? Like rogue can Learn ability to heal itself and a bit others but simply not heal as strong and deadly damages as cercic would for example?
Please read the Basic Rules. You're asking questions that are answered there.
Rogues don't get healing powers.
like isn't it something to learn or gain by getting some artifact or something?
Classes are discrete. Itās not like a skill tree like in some videogame RPGs. Certain features may cross over between classes, such as the spells a class can know. Bards and Clerics both can learn the spell Cure Wounds, for example.
However, a Fighter will never learn the Rogueās sneak attack, and a Wizard will never get the Barbarianās rage
Not really. Classes can dabble a bit, but to keep the classes their own thing, no one class can do everything.
And yep, best read the rules for now, then ask questions about specific things that you get stuck on
If a player wants their rogue character to have healing powers then they could multiclass with a class that has healing powers/spells.
At the moment you're not really going to learn anything by asking questions based on assumptions and when you need to sleep.
Speaking of, I also need to sleep, so off I go!
You get to take a feat every so often, which is from a list of feats any class has access to. If you want to give your rogue some ability to heal, taking the Healer feat or Magic Initiate (Cleric) would grant them some of that
I know I just kinda stubborn to do something now Instead later. Also I am dumb overall so better to be dumb with sleeping excuse than be dumb later with no excuse
Goodnight
Remember though that other people are also having to put in effort to help answer questions.
And you trying to say I am disrespectfull or
Sometimes other features from a variety of character options can give you access to abilities that mimic or are very similar to the abilities of other classes. If you want to heal, thereās many items, character feats, racial features, class abilities, etc that can heal.
For example, the Fighter gets the feature āSecond Windā which is a self-healing ability. But, it will never get the Life Clericās Channel Divinity: Preserve Life healing ability unless that character takes enough levels in Cleric to do so.
So you actually can get something from everything if you just put enough levels efforts and gain enough artifacts and stuffs but just not be perfect?
The max character level is 20.
Ah. so you can't keep growing but it just takes a heavily long time or efforts
And it's also a team game: no one character can be good at everything, by design. Each person has some speciality that makes them an asset at the table.
So you stuck at level 20 max. And how hard is to gain levels?
Again, please read the Basic Rules.
How would I go about finding servers that stream DND stuff?
I am saying that ignoring the repeated advice of using the resources linked, or just getting rest, and asking questions based on assumptions that others are going to have to work out first and then answer and then point to the basic rules again isn't just about you. Being stubborn in this case because you're worried about 'seeming silly' (which don't be!) is making others have to put in more work.
It's a bit like asking how to bake a cake, being given a recipe, refusing to read that recipe and instead asking if you need to use flour, and if so, how much.
We're all eager to help, but can't really help if our advice gets ignored.
Dependent on the DM. As stated in the basic rules leveling up is either done via the milestone or XP system.
Milestone = The DM decides when characters level up, usually after a big event.
XP = Once you get enough XP via questing, killing monsters, etc you level up. However, the amount of XP you get is still decided by the DM since they give out the quests and decide what enemies you face.
But now, I'mma take my own advice and sleep š“
If you keep ignoring our advice then there's little incentive for us to continue answering.
Everyone keep telling me to read basics rules/advices but I don't see them Ig don't know where to click or can't skip that much because there were only a few sentences there and I'm also on phone

Basic Rules on D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Make sure you have Discord set up to show embeds - the bot messages with the links folks are telling you about are in a Discord embed.
What is FPF
I don't really know how discord works anymore after the update they got rid of tags to names
I don't even know if I have newest update cause my phone have full space
PDF = Portable Document Format (created by Adobe)
Under your Discord settings there's a Chat section - click that and inside there, there is a Embeds and Link Previews toggle - turn that on.
Yeah ig I have it
Ehh the way I literally have a linka with Basic Rules and intoductory demo. But I can't either pass literal demo or either find all those basic Rules to even read. Gosh I'm so dumb
Here's a direct link to the online D&D free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Here's a link to the PDF file version that can be downloaded and viewed by most browsers or by devices that have a PDF reader app (like Adobe Acrobat): https://media.wizards.com/2018/dnd/downloads/DnD_BasicRules_2018.pdf
Wait-
Nobody told me all of these points can be clicked
Oh sorry! Yeah the blue text are links.
a single one is literally entire article for School lession-
And those are only basics. How I am capable to learn and remember all?
You don't have to memorize this stuff - just become familiar with it so that when folks reference a rule or game mechanic you can think "Okay I remember hearing about that..." and can look it up or use that rule/mechanic in the game.
The most important thing for a D&D player is learning how to make a character, what the character sheet features are, and then how to make skill checks, attack rolls, damage rolls, and saving throws.
"I Remember hearing about that- start forgetting most important part of it and have to go back to rules and then read every each one of them again for another hours to read about the exact stuff
Also check out the Handbook Helper video links if you find learning from videos is easier than reading.
Isn't there supposed to be a simple mini card or something to fill with random stuff they would suggest?
I've been playing this game for years and I still forget stuff - it's not a big deal.
I'm not english. Reading is already hard. Videos impossible
That's kind of what the free basic rules are - the most condensed version of the game stripped down to its core (some would argue it could be further condensed).
The other D&D books add additional rules and options to the core game
But D&D can be played just with the free basic rules
Is there anything prepared already for me to just fit in? Like just pick something and mix everything in once? Or I actually need to be Understanding and smart?
Again you don't have to memorize this stuff - take your time and learn what you can. The DnDBeyond app has a feature to help guide new users through the character creation process but you can also read the very first chapter of the free basic rules as it's a step by step guide on how to create a character.
I can't have any apps
My phone have full space for like months already
It turning off everyday randomly
You can use the DnDBeyond website to use the character tool to create and manage character sheets.
Also DnDBeyond does have some premade character sheets you could use but they may nto work great for the particular D&D game/setting you may eventually play in.
Because I barely Understand 75% of everything you all saying and I won't Understand app stuff even if it's ready
You mean I need to made character and stuff for each game invidually? Like can't have single class/character/oc or something and just use it but need to make like 20 of them?
Unfortunately not yet. I know Wizards of the Coast/D&D has said they'd like to translate the game into more languages but I have no idea where they are in that process. I think they are focussing on German, Spanish, French and Japanese right now?
None of languages I would know
Each table is different and one character in one campaign/game setting may not work well in a different campaign/game setting.
So what I need to do to fit into most one's?
Google Translate offers text translations of websites. I am sure it is far from perfect, but it would be something
I trying to translate stuffs demo or you all said yet it's not really helping
Ehh sorry I am such an idiot I can't fix that. I guess I gonna try to sleep.
Goodnight

Welcome! The bot post above has some very helpful resources for you. The Basic Rules are linked there, and the first for chapters are a step by step guide to character creation. And thereās also a link to the Handbooker Helper YouTube series, which explains much of the same information in short YouTube videos, if you are more of an audio/visual learner
I wanted to use dnd byond but didn't have the$30 for the book I need to play my warforge artillerist artificer
Ah. Yes that would make things difficult. You can still fill out a traditional paper character sheet, or a PDF version if you want it digitally still. I know many people also use google sheets for their character sheets
Normally I would recommend using D&D Beyondās homebrew tools to recreate any content you own from a source other than their site, but their homebrew tools cannot make whole classes, only subclasses. So if you do not own the artificer class, you will not be able to make your character on D&D Beyond
I have an app to keep my stuff in just dosent do good with spells so I don't fully know what can pick and what not
the book comes with both class and race I think
think I bought the artificer class on there but I can't find a way just to buy warforged race by it self
they removed the ability to buy piecemeal content recently i fear
As of just 2 days ago, they removed the ability to buy individual content from books
D&D Beyond just removed a la carte option last month. A lot of people are upset of that decision.
guess it soon time to figure out how to do it from. the books
my lvl 7 barb died to a 3rd lvl smite crit
Check #find-a-game
it's def possible to do play by post/text based dnd
That's up to the DM how everyone communicate.
Just know, that everone at the table will communicate in the same way. Can't be playing by post while others are using mics, for example
Oh
Thatās just the way different communication styles go, text is significantly slower than voice especially during RP moments
If only 1 person is using voice, theyāre gonna end up waiting for the texters to type. If only 1 person is using text, theyāre gonna be left behind during RP
Hi
Hello
Hi! I'm really new to DnD and i whuld love if someone can help me with learning it
I'd first start off by reviewing the pinned messages here in the channel as there's lots of useful links and resources to help get you started. Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide to see all our many channels for specific D&D topics)
Oh I can help you! Do you have the player's handbook or any other D&D game?
No not really i'm looking for it!
I just learned about it
Oh it is really expensive like 10'000 rupees but it is worth it, if you want to individually buy the book it is 2'500-4'000 in india
Or you can have the online version
I don't really have any money to buy anything rn TT
Is it free?
I'm fine with that!

Homebrew
Tysm!
I think it will be good enough start
Kk!
So can someone explain how to use roll20?
Hello I'm new and want some help Makin a character and want some help learning the game
That would be more a question for #third-party
Ah alright thanks
@edgy haven
Have you read the rules for druid wild shape?
i believe a dragon without wings would still be a draconic creature type and wildshape only transforms you into beasts (or elementals at high levels for moon druids? but thatās not relevant here)
Well "dragon without wings" isn't a creature, so we'd need to know if they're referring to a specific creature (such as maybe a guard drake) or a homebrew one. That's why I was asking if they'd read the rules, so there was an indication of where to approach answering this from
I'm new here, what should I do first? Always wanted to play DND but never have anyone to play with
Hello!!
You can read the rules yourself, they're in the free basic rules
Read through the resources in this channel's pinned messages and/or #learn-to-play to familiarize yourself with how the game works. Try to make a character (with the knowledge it will probably need to change to suit the game you're in). Then head to #find-a-game to begin searching for others to game with!
God Idk why I'm so nervous about this lol
About what exactly?
Idrk, finding a community, fitting in, doing good-
you'll get it eventually
Focus on having fun as opposed to doing good
Starting a new social activity can certainly bring some level of discomfort - fortunately this activity is about playing a game and having fun!
Cuz like, I have an idea for a character but I think I want to make them a firbolg? But I have no money so I can't rlly buy extra content-
if you want to practice making a character on your own, then just use the options you currently have access to. When you join a group and make the character you're actually going to use, talk to the DM and see what kind of content they have access to.
I'm wondering what class I should go for, I have art for the character and he uses a large hammer, so..
#character-discussion if you want to spit ball ideas
Question, what do you actually need to have to start a campaign other than characters?
Someone to be the Dungeon Master (DM) ā you either join a game or you and some friends create a game yourself.
Some dice, some rules to reference (free basic rules should be fine to start with), a way to communicate, and then one of the hardest things: scheduling.

Excuse me, but if a character is proficient in Dexterity, would they add their proficiency bonus to initiative? Or would you JUST add your dex modifier to initiative, without the proficiency?
Or does proficiency only effect saving throws, and I'm just being dumb
It is not possible to be proficient just "dexterity" in general. You can be proficient in dexterity saving throws, or any skills that use dexterity. But since initiative is an ability check without an associated skill, it is not possible to gain proficiency in it unless you have a feature that specifically says you can add your proficiency bonus to your initiative rolls
Ah okay, sorry! I just looked at a character sheet too fast and got confused. Thanks for the clarification
No need to appologize. Answering questions like this is what this channel is here for
And if I'm not mistaken, your initiative is your dex + d20
That is correct
So Dex is already integrated
they were asking about their proficiency bonus, not their dexterity modifier
Right
how long does a casual session last for?
That's up to the players and DMs to decide.
that will depend on your group and how long they are available/willing to play
That is entirely dependent on your group and your playstyle, but the average is about 2-4 hours
oh okay, thank you.
Im trying to make my first character with a copy of the basic rules. Where can i see what starting wealth i have based on my class? (rogue)
oh, then how?
Your starting items (including your money) is usually defined by your background and your class.
Those are in the basic rules, yes.
Your starting equipment will be the first thing listed for your class under their class features
do i just write a backround or are there specific ones? Also my class doesnt mention any money or gold, or maybe i havent noticed it?
Equipment
You start with the following equipment, in addition to the
equipment granted by your background:
⢠(a) a rapier or (b) a shortsword
⢠(a) a shortbow and quiver of 20 arrows or (b)
a shortsword
⢠(a) a burglarās pack, (b) a dungeoneerās pack, or (c) an
explorerās pack
⢠Leather armor, two daggers, and thievesā tools
In chapter 5, there is a table with the starting wealth values for each class. These are meant to be taken instead of starting equipment. You choose to either start with the gold to buy your own gear, or start with the standard set of equipment listed in your class. Some backgrounds do grant you a small amount of gold as well, which you will recieve whether your choose starting gold or starting equipment
As for your background, there are a list of pre-made ones you can choose from, in chapter 4. But that chapter also describes how to make your own, if you'd like to customize it
Thank ya'll very much.
Are there pre made actions for weapon attacks or do we just make those up?
For PCs? Whatever weapon(s) your character wielding would be their weapon attack.
See the weapons table found in the Basic Rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
Most of the time, the only thing you can do with your weapon is take the Attack action. There are some class features that allow you to do different things with them, such as the Battle Master's maneuvers. But you don't typically have the ability to "make up" actions with your weapons
hello i am new to dnd (played once a few years ago) and want to start playing so i would like to know a good way to learn all the rules and important information to start playing like books or videos please
english is not my first language so i apologise for any misspelling
I asked cause I saw how bg3 gave you main hand attack, flourish, and other pre made attacks but I didn't know if that was just cause it's a video game that needed to put attacking in a simple way. Are all the class actions in the player's handbook. I might be getting that from a friend today.
Oh I didn't even see that
The special attacks that each weapon can do in BG3 are something they made up for that game. A "flourish" is an ability that is specific to the College of Swords subclass for the Bard class.
The base abilities of each class are in the basic rules (and the player's handbook). The basic rules contains 1 subclass for each class. The players handbook contains quite a few more. But there are even more in the other expansion books
Suffice to say, doing things like 'sweeping at an opponent's leg to try to trip them' isn't a thing that a character has access to unless they get a specific ability to do so
So like at the beginning you can only just Slash and stab
Or just say "I attack enemy with shortsword"
Try reading the section in the basic rules titled Actions in Combat
Couldn't find it thx for the direction
Where were you looking?
The contents page of the basic rules lists all the major concepts
Chapter 9 deals with combat
Unlearn everything you know about D&D from BG3. BG3 is basically homebrew version of D&D.

I thought it was different because it's 4e
No, BG3 is loosely based on the 5E ruleset but they tweaked A LOT for the video game.
BG3 is based on 5e. They just made a large amount of changes
You can say "I go in with a whirlwind strike to both the enemy's legs, hoping to topple them."
But that won't give you any different mechanical advantage over saying "I attack with my Shortsword."
Oh I thought they said they couldn't do a 5e baldur's gate cause the mechanics were too hard to make into a video game
Well, they have done so.
Narrative flavour of your attack is fine but just because you say you try to knock the enemy over doesn't mean you will because you are limited what you can do with your Action: you either Attack action or you do a Shove action.
Ive been had by the internet
Please remember that this is the newcomers channel for learning the basics of D&D
How could it lie to me like this
As a game developer, it was definitely possible to do a pure 5E game without changing any of the rules. Larian decided not to.
If you want to discuss Baldur's Gate 3 specifically, please use #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
They didn't lie. It's a video game.
Anyway, please read the free Basic Rules if you want to know how to play D&D the tabletop game.
Iām new to D&D. Havenāt even played a game yet. How do I contact a Dungeon Master to join their campaign? I havenāt been getting messages.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Can I please talk to a real person instead of a copy paste?
Read #find-a-game as it explains how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a game
you can directly message them and ask them to join if they've got a looking for players post
but yeah #looking-for-players is the main place to look for games here
Can also check out other D&D servers advertised in #looking-for-community
I tried that, and nobodyās answered.
Coordinating people's schedules to sit down and play a game for 3-4 hours takes time and effort. This is not like a video game that you jump into a lobby and find a game instantly that you can join.
There's also more players than there are DMs.
so when youre rolling for HP when leveling up can you buy instead of rolling?
You can either roll or take the average
wait so whats the average of 12+3? do you count the con modifier aswell with average
I am very interested in Dnd. Is there a channel here where you can find a group? Preferably German
You add your con modifier to it (rolled or average)
do I round up or down
Up
Im new to dnd how do i find people to play with
We have a channel called #find-a-game that can explain how to do so!
I'm new to discord trying to find a game but the # crap is confusing lol
The blue words is a clickable link that leads you to the channel!
I went to find a game and then they asked for specifics. how do i put that information in?
The channel has the ability to type certain commands
Usually starting with a /
It will then give you an application like form to fill them it sends it to one of the channels advertising for players and DMs alike!
okay I think I figured it out.
Good luck and have fun!
so how exactly do i start?

thxx
Well I'm new but I created a character on D and D beyond app at first.
I played a cleric in the past which was easier then the bard I'm playuing now. But shes fun
I do people contact you if they have a group?
*how
does Hit Point Type mean stats?
"When leveling up, increase hit points by the fixed value for your chosen class or manually enter a rolled value"
No, youāre choosing whether you want to use the average or roll for HP
Most clesses have different hitpoints depending on what level you are.
you can either roll your hit die (d12 barbarians, d10 fighters, paladins, rangers and blood hunters, d6 sorcerers and wizards or d8 everyone else) or take the average of said hit die
alrr thxx
D and d beyond is very helpful because you put your class in and it does it for yuou.
d12 average is 7, d10 is 6, d8 is 5, and d6 is 4 (rounded up)
You can direct message folks posting in #looking-for-players or post in the thread attached to their game posting. Or vice versa if youāve posted in #750812887697588356
can i technically make a orc rogue?
you 100% can
cause imagine succeding a stealth roll and going behind someone and out of nowhere just a 3 meter tall ogre being behind them
yeah that'd be hilarious
lol
should i go for such a troll build for my first try?
if you want to (and your dm lets you do it) then absolutely
Basically
The Basic rules might have a description on them
I know the Playerās Handbook does
proficiency is you get to add your proficiency bonus to the check or save or attack roll you make
so an extra to my roll
yeah
S:10 / D:15 / C:8 / I:12 / W:14 / C:13
are those good stats for a halfling lightfoot rogue?
wassup my gang
8 con is really bad
Personally I never go below 14 and I donāt recommend anything under 12
Also you donāt seem to have applied your racial stat boosts
correct
hol on lemme tell ya total after remodifying
STRENGTH: 12
DEXTERITY: 17
CONSTITUTION: 13
INTELLIGENCE: 10
WISDOM: 13
CHARISMA: 15
12/15/13/10/13/14 without modifiers
+2 dex / +1 char
Huh?
It should just be this but 17 Dex and 14 cha if youāre just applying racial boosts
didnt ya say constitution 8 is really bad?
Yeah but you canāt just randomly raise it without changing other stats
Thatās not how stat generation works
if you want you can do standard array
hwo do i find a "Alignment"
like how should i know tf lawful evil and chaotic good symbolizes
lawful evil is you follow a code, but that code excludes certain things, like crime, murder and the such
chaotic good is doing said murder, crime and bad stuff but for something like stealing money to give back to an orphanage for example
where can i find all of those
Alignment is covered here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Alignment
What about chaotic neutral
if you have dnd beyond, and a character made, you can go to your character sheet, go to description, then change it and get the definitions of the alignments
Chaotic neutral (CN) creatures follow their whims, holding their personal freedom above all else. Many barbarians and rogues, and some bards, are chaotic neutral.
Alignment is used to describe how your character behaves.
Ive made a character now im just looking for people to play with

why tf does the backpack add weight?
backpacks are heavy
where am i keepin my whole stuff in then what
you're either carrying it, wearing it in one way or another, or it's in your backpack
or a pouch
link doesn't work
#character-discussion is also the better channel for character feedback!
oh true mb
Could anyone help me out with how to make a character? I'm still a bit new, and I don't remember what classes are good and what stats for that class is good (I mostly go for an elf class in the dnd games)
on dnd beyond or in general?
In general
me personally, i pick my class first, then my race
There are PDFs for character sheet 5e but D&D Beyond has a ācreate a character builderā
D&Dbeyond also has a Basic Rules set that is free as well
Ah okay, thank you!
same with me 6 months ago

Hello, welcome to DnD
It looks so fun
Welcome!
And it seems like the kinda game I'd love too
When you find the right people it is very much so
How would I determine the level of my class?
Elaborate?
But unfortunately I'm quaking in my boots cause I have NO idea how to start
You have found the right place
Like.. on the dnd character sheet, the bar at the top says "Class & Level" But I don't understand what it means by level
I'm sorry if what I say is confusing
I have been playing D&D for over 20 years and have only found this server recently and it has led to great things
You are using a character generator? Which one?
oh nono, I found a PDF of the DnD 5e sheet, and i'm writing on it currently
I would send a picture, but I don't know if I can
I am not sure of those rules either. Are you familiar with the Player's Handbook?
@fickle turret Have you ever played any roleplaying games before?
No, I've never read it. I think I played a campaign once in my life but that was a long time ago, so i'm not that familiar with the handbook.
If I had read it in the past*
RPG's, TONS. I love RPG's but I've never done one over a tabletop before like this kinda thing
It really helps to have a ruleset in front of you in some capacity, whether physical or digital
Do you know any good digital rulesets that I could try to go too?
I would love to help you out navigating finding a good group to play with, this is the place to do that
There are a few different online resources for these things. There's D&D Beyond, 5e, Dicecloud etc.
omg my heart
Ah, Okay, Thank you! :)
I'll look at that, and if I have any questions i'll post them here! :)
Some are mostly free, some require paying depends on how involved you want to go, but you should be able to access enough basic rules to be able to create a level 1 character
For sure! Good luck and most importantly, have fun!
Feel free to DM questions, I know I had a bit of a rough time figuring out the virtual world of D&D
Also feel free to DM questions, not sure I can help with everything but I can at the least point you in the right direction
Okay tysm!
Anytime! The only way to keep the game going is to encourage new players and I want the game to live on!
I actually do have a question though, about the class I chose
Is it okay if I DM you real quick?
Yes
(And thus a session began)
Replied to the wrong one at first
? I like your profile pic
Do you guys have any ideas for where I should start so I can learn about DND?

You have found the right place
Heya
Hello
Welcome to the hobby.
My message above and the bot post point you to resources to get started with the game.
the basic rules are linked in the pinned messages of this channel
your dm will determine what level you start at. just go level 1 for now
have a look at the basic rules
I would also point any newer players to the #looking-for-community channel
Ive been wanting to get into DnD for a while, is there a starter guide of sorts? i know a bit about D20 and stuff like that but pretty minimal.
You have found the right place

the bot post above has some great links to get you started, and our #learn-to-play channel has even more detailed guides. Once you've take a quick glance through some of the material, let us know if you have any specific questions. We're more than happy to help
My only experience has been with Palladium growing up and that was just mainly my father and I doing small little adventures we never finished. My friend wants to learn and unfortunately I canāt teach them. Would you suggest looking for community to find someone to help us through the learning stages?
How does a bossfight/combat encounter work?
I recommend you watch an actual play of D&D. There are streams or shows of people playing D&D, such as Critical Roll and Dimension 20 that illustrate how combat in D&D works.
High Rollers is also a good one
If you are interested in watching an actual play, I would personally recommend one of Dimension 20's campaigns because they are usually quite short, generally only 8 or 12 episode runs, with each episode going for 2 hours.
They have the full campaigns of both The Unsleeping City, and Escape from the Bloodkeep free to watch on their youtube.
plus Fantasy High seasons one and two
Ah, they didnt have the [full episodes] tag so I missed them. Good shout
If you're short on time, reading through the the rules for Combat in the Basic Rules explains it simply
Do i need to buy the player handbook to play?
No, there are many free resources
And if you are in the market to buy something to learn, buy a Basic Game Set
It would include the things you need to learn and the basic accessories to do so

Ohhh... Alright alright...
Im dming for some friends but ive never played (im a player but my dm is still working on it) and idk how where to start? Is there like a tutorial or smth. Also we r probably gonna be doing it irl. But i would also like to have it on computer. Help where do i start!!!!!
I suggest heading on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Okk
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
The huh!!!!
That's a yes or no question.
No i havent

I've done a couple official campaigns now but is there a place people share their homemade campaigns that I could use? (For free)
Dmsguild
What do backround speciality's do? Are they simply for roleplaying purpose, since i dont see any mechanical benefits in the Basic Rules?
Do you mean things like Acolyte and Soldier?
They offer small mechanical benefits and equipment
Not really, i mean like PickPocketer from Criminal Backround, or Alchemist from Sage Backround?
Is 4 PCs too much for a beginner DM?
Ah, those specifics of the background.
I think thats jsut fluff
okay, but do i write them down anywhere, and if so, where?
Anywhere on your character sheet that seems appropriate
As long as it helps you find all the information you need when you need it, there's no wrong way to fill in a character sheet
They're for your benefit, that's all
Im completely new. id like to ask how to make a character
you can go to the official dnd website and download the character sheet and the basic rules. Then you just read most of the basic rules while you fill out the character sheet acording to the races classes and roleplaying stuff of your liking. If you have any questions about calculating stuff like proficiency bonuses or anything, you can google it or use an AI like ChatGPT or Aria. If you have any specific questions you can ask them here later on. At least that is what i am doing right now.
thank you
i made one with DnD beyond but i don`t understand the Faith part.
Hi, I want to get started with the game, i saw there are a few kits for starters "essential" "starter" idk which one to get
I also heard that's not enough, I need handbook or something
Would appreciate the guidance
Same over here
Oh, starter handbooks came in with those in one package if im not wrong, hold up real quick
Faith is optional - if your group/game deals with D&D pantheons you could use this area to note which gods you follow
D&D does not require characters to follow any particular deity though (or believe in deities)
https://youtu.be/zONEcUAYDfU?si=kX8bAjEYW7RpjXSQ
Here, it should have (A really, REALLY summarized) all the explanation you need @topaz minnow
hm, i saw a few ones namely starter, essential, and players handbook, plus a ton of expansions
thank you. it just bothered me because i dint get a clear answer from the internet
There, the video above me, you can check it out
Im also new and learning here
is there e-book version to buy?
Because it's fairly optional and highly dependent on the D&D game/setting you're playing in, that could explain why there isn't a clear cut answer
I have a friend working at printing company so he can actually print ebook to physical for lower price
if buying online is cheaper that is
The dnd beyond app should (probably) have them
The places where you can buy digital versions of D&D books are:
- DnDBeyond
- Fantasy Grounds
- Roll20
- (soon to come) Foundry VTT
Theses digital versions of the books are not designed for or intended for printing though.
Yeah, im about to say that
I need to save some money for starter kit + PHB it seems.
Buying BG3 got me slightly broke
There's some stuff you cabt print
Basic rules pdf can be printed
i dont realy understand the roll20 charecter sheet
alternatively I can buy the physical version and then ask my friend to scan it back onto computer???
oh ok, thanks
Neither do I - I use DnDbeyond or the form-fillable PDF sheets.
Or Foundry if I'm playing on that Virtual Tabletop.
I generally prefer DnDBeyond and using Avrae and playing theater of the mind over Discord
i used dnd beyond for my character. seemed easyer
But have used Roll20, Owlbear.rodeo, or FoundryVTT for maps/tokens
The dice, etc etc
back to D&D beginner questions
Hi I can't get the file for an exporting a character down can somebody be able to help me sorry
Are you using D&D Beyond or trying to find the PDF versions of the character sheet?
Yes I'm trying to get the PDF to export but it isn't is there something specife that has to be changed?
And sorry for money nuisance behavior
Iām still not clear on your specific problem. Character sheets are available here (https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/character-sheets) with both blank and pre-generated character versions. If your problem is using D&D Beyond, you can post in #ddb-support.
I'm trying to explore it as a PDF cuz I'm using the site to build a character and I'm trying to print it out so I need to explore it as a PDF but it's not exporting sorry for my nuisance behavior
If the site is D&D Beyond, you should use the support channel. If itās another site, Iām not sure we can help unless someone is familiar with how that site works.
It's fine were all learning here but i think none of us can help you
I am sorry
If your using the dndbeyond app, open your character click the cog in the top left and you should see an option for pdf
Should be able to scroll to the bottom on Manage Character and there's a button for it. Alternatively, copy the Share PDF link, paste it into a browser window and save it from there.
Like i said it's fine, im also new so i don't really know how to help...
And says that my character is not ready even though I created it I don't know what's wrong sorry
Did you fill out everything on the character creation screens? Class, race, background, equipment, stat points
Yes does that also go for a parents
Are you using the dndbeyond site?
Yes
You don't need to fill in the Appearance section.
Are you still in the creation screen?
Yes I'm going through everything over itself again I am on faith because I chose actually and I made sure that everything is where it's supposed to be on on page
Min to generate a character is race class and allocate stat points so check them 3 things
Do u know where can i find a dm
@fresh fable thanky for the information
Did you sort it?
@nimble yoke #find-a-game
@fresh fable yes thank you

The bot post above covers the differences between the video game and tabletop.
Im currently setting up for my first D&D combat where I'm DM'ing and I'm looking at Stat blocks for a Skeleton. In the monster manual is doesnt mention they have proficiency bonus, however on D&D Beyond it shows they have +2 Proficiency bonus. Can anyone shed light on this for me please?
you're right the statblock doesn't mention this, but in monster stat blocks the PB is assumed.
Might be a matter of not needing the prof bonus in the statblock explicitly called out, as the statblock on Roll20 (which also has Basic Rules content) doesnāt have the prof bonus. But you could calculate the prof bonus since the to-hit is +4 and Dex is +2, leaving you with that +2 prof bonus.
You can tell it has the PB added in the attack +4 of the shortbow and the shortsword. the to hit for both of those weapons is dexterity modifier +Proficiency bonus. The Dex bonus is only +2 so the other +2 is the Proficiency bonus
Thanks for the help guys! Much appreciated
just to add here, monster proficiency bonuses are explicitly based on their CR: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#SavingThrows
Yes and no. You are extremely limited on bg3 in comparison to real DND
guys this might be a dumb question but can i bring my character to different campaigns, with levels items and such
You can with Adventurers League but typically not in traditional play.
it would depend on if the dm allows it
No?New dm,new game
Basically, you gotta see every table as a "new game" button
Every time you get a new campaign or one shot, you have to see with the dm and create a character appropriate to said campaign or one shot
Its not like one big system, its plenty of little individual games
@kind compass That's not accurate
As stated, AL (adventurer's league) is a sanctioned format of play that explicitly allows this
And as for non-AL play, you have to ask your DM
maybe itās just because it fit the story
@shrewd moss Please no live play spoilers
He never mentionned AL thought?
No, but Adventurer's League is a common way for people to get started playing D&D as newcomers as it's one of the most accessible forms of play out there
As such, it's an important thing to cover when it comes to getting started with D&D
And even excluding AL, it's not an absolute "no" as you replied, it's a "Ask your DM" question
He just mentionned dnd in general,so my statement stands.
Not all tables will accept you to transpher a full character with their levels and items. Its one of the basics that need adressing.
No, hence why "Ask the DM" is the best response
Also there's no need to ping me repeatedly
Not pinging you,it does it when I respond to one of your messages in specific
You are pinging me, so I'd appreciate you disable pings when replying to me while I'm actively in the conversation
Thank you
oh dang sorry.
Thank you!! I think I found a place in my area where I can join AL i didnāt even know about it
Best of luck on your quests
i think davy answered my question, AL seems official and is part of DND so itās like having a public and private session
nervous AND excited
AL is the official organized play program of D&D and is as good a way of getting started as any other (which is why I mentioned it above). Happy adventuring!

Hi there, I am new to the server and have been a DM for about 6 months now, Nice to meet all of you! and I hope to learn a lot from this server!
Hello, I'm new, trying to get into playing DND, yes a noob
Hello! I've consumed a lot of DND content for years but never got the chance to play it, so I'm looking forward to getting to learn and play!
You can all have a look at the materials in the bot post a few messages up
Hey y'all!!
I keep trying to get into DND but every time I try I just feel like I hit a wall. Iāve read the basic rules before and had to take on the role of DM and I felt like I kept running into walls. I feel like it would be easier if I knew someone who knew how to play but there are 3 of us in total all trying to learn and overall just seems very difficult to play without someone who knows what there doing and I can ask questions to mid game. Any advice?
Then you might want to look for an experienced DM whoās group you can join
hello everyone, i have recently joined a group all of new dnd players and i ended up being the dm i have already had 1 session so i want to hopefully get ideas for my next session. currently my players are in a inn and almost just got robbed and they are staying the night in the inn. so i want some ideas for future sessions
Yeah I would like to find a group so I could maybe at least learn how to properly play but I would imagine most DMs are not looking for new players to help them learn and they would want to do campaigns with experienced players?
most DMs are open to new players
Hey, Iām technically not a newcomer because Iāve been here for a while, but I had a question about something I thought of and I didnāt want to just randomly intrude whatās happening in Dnd-discussion
what is it?
How do bonus actions work? Do you only get one? Orr-
You only get one bonus action per turn
is anybody instrested in teaching me more about dnd?
Just making sure, thank you

ok i also wanted to know if youd know anybody whod like to start a campaign with me and teach me along the way, you guys dont have to lol ill try and figure out everything on my own
Idc if youd like to be a player, or dm
Please read the free Basic Rules. No one has the bandwidth to do private tutorials here
Also how does proficiencies in weapons work again-? Does it add proficiency bonus + strength to roll to hit?
if you're using a strength weapons, then yes
yes, unless the weapon is ranged or has the finesse property, in which case it uses dexterity in place of strength (also keep in mind, you add the stat modifier, not the full stat - if you have 18 str, you add +4)
Only if your character is proficient with the weapon
So its be 1d20+5 for to hit then 2d6+3 for damage
He is
does anybody wanna create a little campaign with me to help me learn and just to have some fun
it can be about anything
Again please read the free Basic Rules and don't beg to join a table here
so sorry
Dozens of new people join here every day.
ok so it says here druids can transform into animals, is there a size limit or something?
there's the #find-a-game channel if you want to send your campaign pitch there?
the limit is challenge rating and its movement speeds
It's based on the Challenge Rating of the animals
cant figure it out'
oh ok
also do sorcerers have to use a staff or can they use there hands?
there's a section about what bot commands to use depending on the type of game you want to run; you send that command in the find a game channel and you'll be given a form to fill out where you put all the information about your game
also whats the diffrence between wizards and sorcerer
They don't need a staff. They just come in handy
ok ill try now
a staff can be used as their arcane focus, but it's not necessary for them to function
ty
ty
every time i say the command looking for game it send me to a thread
wizards use their intelligence for spellcasting, and have a spellbook where they keep all their learned spells. from that spellbook, they can prepare a list of spells to use each day, or cast the spells in there as rituals.
sorcerers use charisma for spellcasting, and they learn their spells and can't prepare new ones - their list is fixed once it's chosen (though you can switch some spells out when levelling up). they also get a special ability called metamagic which they can use to "morph" the spells and slightly change their effects
ok
but why does it take me to a thread every time i type hashtag looking for a game
i think you're using the wrong command, it'd be something like /looking-for and then players or community depending on what you want to run, which should then give you a form to fill out so that a post can appear in the designated channel
if you're not looking to be the dm though you can just look through the #looking-for-players channel and follow the joining rules
Spellcasters, such as sorcerers, either use a spell component pouch or a focus
I recommend you watch Critical Role's Handbooker Helper tutorial videos
assuming you have +3 strength, yes
Where's the +15 from?
+3 from strength, +2 from rage, +10 from Great Weapon Master feat
GWM is very good, but keep in mind it's also reducing your accuracy
Yeah, but I already had a +5 bonus from proficiency and strength modifier, so its just rolling a d20 with no modifiers
+5 bonus is what's mathemtically expected, so you're effectively 5 points of bonus below the standard
it's still a good feat, but it's not without cost
Thats when reckless attack comes in when i get level 2 frfr, gonna go crazy
ah yeah stacking it with reckless is good
for level 1 you generally want to use it on anyone with 14 AC or less
When I joined my campaign, they nerfed my revolvers because they would one shot people at lvl 2. This is a whole new level of ridiculous.š
with advantage from reckless, 16 or less
This is wandering into #optimization or #character-discussion territory
Fair
yeah sorry
#dnd-discussion would be a better place to complain about that
Do you think the cantrip Produce Flames could melt the blade of an enemyās sword off?
hi
Hi
I have a question. I am not sure if I should wait to get the Player's Handbook because I heard a new edition might come out in the fall?
Is it even worth getting the Handbook with the free rules online?
Thank-you
no. any feature or spell only does what it says it does
The new handbook will come out September 17th. I think itās going to be a big upgrade in presentation, and a strategic update to the rules. But the old rules will still be compatible.
regarding this, the PHB gives far more character options and is basically necessary for that beyond just getting a taste of the game with the basic rules
Maybe I will wait until it comes out then.
imo at least
To me, itās a matter of how much you will miss the options of the full rules if you just use the free basic rules.
The Dungeon Guide was a disappointing purchase.
without the PHB there's only one subclass option per class, which really hurts customizability
yeah the dungeon master's guide is known for being not great. It's also not needed if you dont plan on DMing
Like, if you have a character you like, right now, you can keep playing them until September and beyond.
Or if you want to use something of the customization of the players handbook, you can borrow from your dm. If you want that functionality on D&D Beyond, you could purchase just the option you want.
I did want to be a DM and I thought the Guide had a poor teaching style for newcomers.
It does.
The presentation was all over the place and not well explained.
New one should be a big improvement.
The art work was good though.
And a lot of the info in the beginning is not what a beginner needs.
Yeah better off watching YouTube to learn to be a dm.
They don't go through well actually setting up an adventure from scratch.
Nope.
I do care about the game enough to struggle to look stuff up on my own but I wouldn't have bought the guide if I knew the presenation would be that poor.
But I played for 15 years with a friend who moved so still feel a connection to DnD and now want to DM.
Beginner adventures do a better job teaching how to dm.
The Starter kit was ok but kinda basic for me as I already played as a pc for 15 years.
The Kit at least taught most of the beginning rules well enough for most part though some were vague such as some of the combat points.
And on top of that I couldn't find how to give feedback to WotC.
I have free video games that have more approachable customer support.
Though I am sunsetting my video game usage to focus on DnD now.
I was more pleased with the free rules online that someone here pointed out to me.
So I am lookin gto set up my first adventure soon as a DM.
Any recommendations for online software for battle maps and character sheets.
My group uses Roll20
Keep in mind I am not tech savvy and a newcomer but still want something that has decent map drawing without pre made ones.
I would rather create my own maps than do premade ones.
Does Roll 20 have map creation software and character sheets or not good ones?
Thank-you all.
roll20 does have a character sheet manager
For me the best part of DnD is the community.
So far most here have been very helpful.
it's not as automated as dnd beyond but that does mean it pushes you to learn things more
I don't believe it has a map creator though
damn trying to find a campaign and all of them are from the us at like 2 am my time
it's got a much more automated character creator and manager, but it can also lead to frustration with it being too automated. it does have a VTT like roll20, but it's in alpha, and very basic
you can think of them as the opposites of each other
dnd beyond has a very fleshed out character sheet manager and a very basic VTT, roll20 has a very fleshed out VTT and more basic/less automated character sheet manager
Do any let me create my own maps?
they all let you import your own maps, but you'll have to use different software to create them
This sounds a bit daunting to me since I have zero computer skills.
I did only use pencil and paper with my friend but now have no one local to play with.
I did prefer in person that is not an option at the moment.
Pencil and paper is zero computer skills
Sorry, I meant the DnD beyond and Roll20
I do defiintely agree pencil and paper is versatile.
I can't compare it to VTT since I never used that.
I may just start creating solo campaigns if it is too tedious to do stuff online.
I don't want to spend a lot of work trying to figure out software since my main purpose is to play the game.
Will the new Dungeon Guide and Handbook both be out in September?
After 15 years with pencil and paper, I would feel very limited with pre made maps.
The pencil and paper were great.
I decided just now to take a look at Roll20 (mostly thanks to you guys, and because I was curious).
Im... not overly impressed?
I understand that its a seperate thing, and as such, would need to buy the books again, but... that just doesnt sit right with me.
Do most DM's that use Roll 20 already have things unlocked?
check out the beyond20 extension
it's a browser extension that connects dnd beyond and roll20
My DM only owns content on Roll20. Basically will depend on which platform you want to use.
New DM guide comes out November
Huh.
So I imagine this works by having the DnD Beyond site open with your character sheet, and you still runt he game in Roll20, but it syncs the two together, and as such, updates Roll20 with what you do in DnD Beyond?
Yes, the character sheet on D&D Beyond interacts with Roll20 via Beyond20. I personally prefer D&D Beyond over Roll20's character sheet.
Well, now that I have a good grasp of it, I feel slightly more optimistic about Online games.
I dont WANT to do online games, and would prefer to be in person.
But the group im trying to form IRL could crumble in an instant...
Sounds way to o complicated to me.
It does seem like a lot
so i entered the links that i saw, the ones containing guides and stuff
it feels like i'm gonna have to take a whole DnD course before i can play properly
there are a lot of rules compared to a board game
imo best way to learn is with a group of friends, whether theyre new or not itll be a more accepting more chill environment. i learnt with my friends, we were all new, and despite the egregious misuse of rules at the start, we learnt and got better over time. key is to just find cool peeps that are happy to teach/learn with you.
Anyone wanna start a campaign on the d@d beyond app
I think thats what the #looking-for-players thing is for
Is there anyone with an open campaign who's willing to accept people who've never played?
oops I didnt scroll far enough in the channels yet
Try to learn some of the rules first, dms may have an easier time accepting you if you know your stuff
I know the rules pretty decent, I've just never actually played š
Then go at it champ!Wish you the best in dungeonning your dragons!
thank you!

Check the introductionary demo link above.
Is dragonlance still popular?
I donāt believe so
"When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action".
Does this rule count for using a quarter staff two handed, then landing an unarmed strike?
Yes, you can use the bonus action unarmed strike after making an Attack action with a quarterstaff held two-handed. The bonus action unarmed strike can follow any Attack action, including attacks made with a two-handed weapon like the quarterstaff.
Yep yep!Since its considered a monk weapon
Though if it were a great club with the heavy weapon property opposed to the quarterstaffs versatile, would it still be possible?
"At 1st level, your practice of martial arts gives you mastery of combat styles that use unarmed strikes and monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that donāt have the two-handed or heavy property."
how much points do i get for stats do i get when im making a character
I think its 27?
If memory serves, its 27 if you do point buy. Start at 8, and each stat increase costs 1 point, up until you get to 13, then it starts costing 2 points per stat increase. With a cap of 15 I think as the highest cap?
Then theres standard array that you can use however you want (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 I think?)
Or you can roll for it. Roll 4 six-sided dice, discarding the lowest value of the 4 dice, and thats now your stat
There should be channels like #looking-for-players where you can sift through and find people to play with
ight thanks
No, itās not a monk weapon
Yes but it has the heavy property
A monk weapon is any simple melee weapon that doesnāt have the two handed or heavy property

Learning just through playing isnāt a great idea and that mentality will reduce your chance of finding anyone willing to take you on
DMs already have a lot of work on their plate, teaching a new player from scratch who couldnāt be bothered to put in even a quarter of the effort that the DM puts in isnāt that appealing
You could check for tables at #looking-for-players
Oh it seems im quite late lol
Couldnt say it better (literally,id get warned)
greatclubs are 2handed, but if you have optional class features, you can use dedicated weapon and use it then if you want

Hello all you new players!
We also have #learn-to-play but above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. You can just pick any 'Basic rules' class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
For character sheets you can use the printable/ editable character sheets from WotC such as this fillable form version or you can create a character on Dndbeyond
Note that on dndbeyond your access to options will be limited to the free access races and creatures unless you purchase more, or homebrew. Feel free to ask here if confused by anything.
Then it's finding a game. You can use the instructions in #find-a-game to post if the LFG channels here but there are also other places to look into, including Adventure League (official organised play) other platform's LFG (Like roll20, r/lfg on reddit) so on. Or find an in person game by kidnapping getting together some friends or looking into local game shops.
Hey everyone
Hi never player before
Im stormy!
hay so, I'm weaning myself off of dndbeyond (for reasons) and I'm kinda lost. what other apps/webs are there for character creation? or how do I get my hands on an automatic pdf?
Roll20 has a character builder. I believe Demiplane have one based on the SRD as well
I don't believe there is anything like an automated pdf for 5e (I'm told pf2 has a good one), at least not for free.
Roll20 is pretty good but it's hard to beat dndbeyond
Hi,
me and some friends are new to D&D so I am trying to help by learning as much as I can about it ( p.s we are having a wizard, cleric and ranger ( Not sure why))
Good luck finding a dm!
I'll see what it's like then!
( we have A dungeon master, I am just learning the rules etc)
I'd recommend watching guides on YouTube and reading books like the players handbook. The players handbook has a lot of information that could help you gain a grasp on at least the mechanics
So I would recommend finding a digital copy and reading through it
thank you.
you are a nice person.
I hope you have a good day and thank you again
p.s any tips for wizard?
Thank you, and of course no problem!
I'd recommend looking up youtube guides on how to build a wizard, a wizard is a very complex class due to all of the spells it has access to. I'd recommend videos such as "A crap Guide to D&D Wizard" by JoCat and the wizard guide by dungeon dudes
They're on YouTube, while you're on it, watching JoCat's videos on D&D can be good to watch, they're short, funny and informative
Thanks ( I had so many path options ( like necromancer) I wasn't sure what path was best you know?)
What type of character do you wanna make? I like building my builds by the basis of if it's in character
What type of character is your wizard?
I am not sure,
I was picking the class ( like necromancer ) first so I could make it as acurate as possible.
It is giving me a head ache
School of necromancy?
yeah
if you had to say what school should I pick?
