No problem at all
So the demo is basically like a taste of what it may be like to play a DND game???
The free basic rules will give you an overview of the most common rules and how a game runs
Are they hard to follow?? They look really complex
It can be yes but you can absolutely ask questions here 🙂
The most important thing for a player is know about how to make a character sheet and understand what their character can do. Spending some effort now - to at least skim through the rules and learn the vocabulary and some of the bits that make up a character sheet - that will help you when you get into a game and start learning by doing.
OKAY!! I already might have a couple of questions if they aren't stated in the rules
Should I skip to descrbe a character then? I already went through the demo a bit so I think I have a bit of an idea on how races may affect the character I make
I'll also note that no one expects you to memorize the rules - I've been playing and running this game for years and I still miss things and mess stuff up. It's about having fun more than knowing rules.
I'd suggest reading the very first chapter of the free basic rules as it explains, step by step, how to create a character. ALso check out the Handbook Helper videos as they help break down some of the core concpets into fun digestible videos.
Where are they?

I watched a couple of this one ladies videos and they were pretty good on getting me interested and informed in the roleplay aspect

Hi
Hello
hiii
Hello :p
If anyone wants help.with making a character, backstory or ANYTHING message me im.happy to help
alright
I'm an experienced player with a lot of writing and character creation practice
And about 2 years of dming under my belt
There is also #character-discussion & #homebrew within this server
Got something for ya about balancing my level 7!
That sounds like a question for #character-discussion or #optimization.
Already tried there and didn’t get a response
Nonetheless, you shouldn't ignore channel topics and randomly post
Please remember to stay on topic

#750812887697588356 WHATS A COMMUNITY??😭
Hi
hello there guys, i have never ever played d&d, and would like to see if i enjoy it 😄 nice to meet you all
Welcome!
thankyou! do you have any advice on how to start?
That’s referring to the types of games found in #looking-for-community, which are described here: #find-a-game message
There’s some good link here to get you going!
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.

But if you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
thankyou very much 😄 i didnt want to join a game and slow people down with me asking questions and how to play aha
hi there guys, sorry to be a pain to ask this question, im having some difficulty making a character, and was wondering if someone could plan a time with me to run me throgh this, i have a basic idea on what id like to be, but just having trouble putting it into words
step 1: caster, half caster or martial
step 2: arcane, divine or primal
step 3: subclasses and flavour
step 4: race and background
If you've got any specific questions you can ask them right here, right now! We'd be glad to assist.
thats awsome! thankyou 🙂 so I have the idea that id like to be a wizard that specalises in dark magic... I was trained by my father.. but when he got betrayed by his half brother, i turned to dark magic and have been looking for revenge since... but i'm not exactly evil, i always protect the innocent and the good, but i fight dark magic with dark magic............................................ im currently making my profile, and need to understand organisations, allies, and enimies.... i dont really know any factions and races as ive never stepped foot into the dnd community
The person who would best tell you about factions, organizations, and allies would be your DM! While there are plenty of established settings in DnD, games can be very different from table to table. Plenty of DMs run worlds that they created themselves, so you'll want to wait until You've found a DM to talk with them directly about the setting they're using.
do you know how id find a DM without me being me an anoyance being a new player?
Plenty of tables are more than willing to accept new players. When looking for games, just ask! As long as you let them know, they'll know how to accommodate you.
From a strictly mechanical standpoint, you sound like you're looking at wizard for the class, with the arcane tradition you pick at level 2 leaning toward Necromancy or Evocation from the Player's Handbook, War Magic from Xanathar's Guide to Everything, or maybe Blood Magic from Tal'Dorei (which I know nothing about).
awsome! thankyou very much! i just put a form to search for a DM 🙂
thats alot of words im not familiar with just yet haha, i didnt know how in depth this game got! 😄
If you don't yet know what specific organizations, etc. are available, you can simply keep it vague.
"He learned dark magic by infiltrating an evil cult"
Why is this cult evil? How did this cult come to be? None of that's immediately relevant to your character. You don't need those answers to start the game.
So the vagueness of it gives your DM some wiggle room.
OK, so in D&D terms (and starting with the parts that I'd been beginning to write out as you responded):
- Race & Background encompass a mix of your species/ethnicity/heritage and what you did before you started going on adventures. To borrow from The Fellowship of the Ring (as something recognizable to a lot of people), Boromir would be a human race, noble background, while Merry would be a halfling race, fisher background (which is as close as I can quickly find to farmer/commoner).
They might work with you to flesh out those details beforehand, or they might use it to surprise you during the ongoing story.
Either way, it gives an easy hook for your DM to tie your character into the campaign.
The character you're describing, you've got your choice of race, with Inheritor (from teh Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide) or Haunted One (from Curse of Strahd) or Reformed Cultist (from the Tal'Dorei book) as fitting-sounding backgrounds.
Your class describes "What are you doing right now." That one's easy because you said "Wizard." But "Wizard" can be anything from Gandalf to Harry Dresden to Alex Verus to Merlin, and they're all specialized a little differently. When a wizard character hits second level, they choose how they're going to specialize - that's the Arcane Tradition. I suggested four that sound like they could fit, along with which rulebooks have them.
Hope those help.
Can anyone recommend a good place online to design PC refs? I got no artistic skill at all. Even if it is something as simple as bg3/Skyrim or whatever character design section
What do you mean "ref"? As it portrait?
Check out HeroForge. Lots of folks make their characters there
Anyone have any tips on how to make a party with a mix of chaotic and orderly work together
Use pintrest
Portrait yes
Are you the DM?
Yes
The folks over in #dm-discussion would be able to help you out!
I remember using that. Might be wrong but did you not need to pay to be able to download the model?
That's correct, but only necessary if you want the model to use elsewhere. You can just take a screenshot if all you're looking for is a visual reference
You need to pay for the 3D model. You can take screenshot of it though.
I think they do, actually
Yes. They have a direct partnership together
Roll a new character who happens to be the identical twin of the deceased character.
That's like the one thing our DM don't want us to do. Which is fine as I can not stop thinking of entirely different PC's I want to do
I am brand new. Actually looking for my first group. Are there sites where a person can practice. I don't want to go into a live session and embarrass myself. Private message me if you have ideas.
No, there are no such sites. D&D is a cooperative game by nature
Don't worry about "embarrasing" yourself, D&D is an inherently silly game and that's the fun of it
What specifically did you want to practice? Rules? Roleplaying?
The best stories from around the table are about evenly divided between "That was totally wicked!!" and "That was such a colossal <censored>-up".
Rules mainly
The rules don't need practising, you can learn as you play, or just give the basic rules a read
As someone that is also new I can confidently say that the rules are whatever you misinterpreted them to be this time
Translation: make it up and if it sticks, it sticks
You don't need to memorize the rules. Get familiar with them and reference the Basic Rules (or Player's Handbook) when you need to.
im new to dnd and got the essentials kit but havent put it to use. I really want to learn how to play and also dm, as i have friends who want to learn and play aswell and i want to join/ teach them on our journey.
Um, no. You don't make up the rules as you go. The DM has the final say.
Oh I know, just mocking myself after somehow mixing up advantage and profession for several sessions
Please don't intentionally give bad advice to other new players. We want to help people learn the rules of the game.
One thing that helped me when I was starting was to try and answer other people's rules questions here on the server.
Even if everyone else beat me to the answer, just learning where to look things up and being able to compare my answers to those quicker ones was a lot of help.
They do say that teaching is the best way to learn
Welcome!
hi hi!

Hey. So me and my friends want to try to get into DnD. The problem is we all have exactly zero ttrpg experience. Does anyone have some resources that could help us or recommend a module or something? Advice? I don't want our first try to be an absolute trainwreck and scare people off of it

going through the same thing friend!
There's a couple free introductory adventures you could try together.
I was wondering what is the fastest way to play my first campain
Like Intro to Stormwreck Isle.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1582-intro-to-stormwreck-isle-your-free-introduction-to
Or Peril in Pinebrook:
Is one of us gonna have to buy some rulebooks and whatnot?
You'll need at least two people to play: One as the DM and one as player. A typical D&D table has 3 to 5 players (optimally).
I know this is a terrible answer and not one that's viable for everybody, but it really is the fastest option:
Pay somebody
You don't need to spend any money to get started. The Basic Rules are free and has everything you need as a new player.
I mean we're all in our thirties and have stable jobs so a bit of money isn't an issue
Exept that lol
There's usually a few learn-to-play games at the monthly Virtual D&D Weekends for like $20.
https://discord.com/events/516367331358801950/1204561498689773599
Awesome I will check it out
All good. You definitely don't need to pay.
You could play D&D literally for years without spending a dime.
Is 5e recommended for new players? To be honest we played a bg3 campaign and now we're here lol
5E is the current and most popular D&D edition.
As far as free options, looking for a free Adventurer's League game or trying a community game like a West March are probably the quickest.
BG3 is based on the 5E ruleset.
D&D fifth edition is widely considered the most accessible version of D&D, something that has been attributed to it's success
Ok cool. I get thrown off hearing about all the different editions and "pathfinder" and everything else
But whatever route you take, building up a solid understanding of the basics while you search will help increase your chances of getting accepted into a game.
Is DMing a lot harder? I might end up being our DM
I wouldn't say harder, but it does take additional effort.

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.

- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

You're simply playing the game in a different way than the others at the table.
And to do that effectively means being prepared to your comfort level.
It's a lot all at once
I'd try starting with one of those free adventures I liked above. They're specifically designed for new DMs and players alike.
You don't need to learn everything at one sitting. Read at your own pace. There's also the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos linked above.
I'm not familiar with either intro adventure from the bot post above. Of the "hardcover" adventures, I think that the following are organized well for new DMs:
- Dragon of Icespire Peak in the Essentials Kit
- Phandelver and Below, the first half of which is a re-polish of the Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure from the original Starter Set
- Wild Beyond the Witchlight
Waterdeep: Dragon Heist is not well-organized for somebody with no previous experience.
not harder per se, but it demands something different compared to being a player
Prepare for what you think your players will accomplish in the session you're going to play, and a bit into the one before that. It's OK to say, "Folks, I need a minute because you did something I wasn't expecting." It's OK, if you can't remember a rule, to make a ruling on the fly to keep the game moving and look things up in more detail between sessions.
I have the player handbook I've been reading through
So as long as you understand the basics of movement/ "make a check/save" / actions, you're in decent shape to start.
Yes we've discussed having mercy on the first DM already haha
And if everyone knows you're all learning together, it'll be fine.
As long as everyone has fun together, you've done it the right way.
So do all modules have their own rules? Or does that make it a different edition? I get confused when people throw stuff like "pathfinder" and others around
Pathfinder is a different game
If you're all learning together, it's OK to ask your spellcasters to talk through the mechanics of what they're doing for everybody at the table: "I'm going to cast my Sacred Flame cantrip at <this bad guy>. He's 25 feet away from me, so I'm close enough to target him. He needs to make a Dexterity (or Dex) save against my DC of 12. If he succeeds, he takes no damage. If he fails, he takes <whatever your damage roll was> fire damage."
Oooo I see
Pathfinder is completely different game. It's like the difference between chess and checkers - those two are both board games, but they're different games.
Similarly, DnD and Pathfinder are both Tabletop games, but they're different games individually.
Each module is a different scenario / adventure using the DnD ruleset
I see. Is there a Warhammer 40k game?
I believe there is, but I'm not familiar myself.
Yes. It's a different family of game altogether.
There are Warhammer TTRPGS
there is Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying for instance
Good to know for the future. Don't want to overwhelm myself now
also Rogue Trader
Just a note that discussing other games beyond D&D should happen in #non-dnd-topics
To use a video game example, the different editions of D&D are like different versions of a video game series, like Call of Duty Modern Warfare or Call of Duty Black Ops. And then Pathfinder would be Battlefield
I'm gonna poke around some of the recommendations I've been given here and see if any click with our group
I was thinking of trying to make a wizard character for a campaign I'm in, then I decided against it.
Why’s that?
hey guys i am super new to dnd. and thought first thing would be best to make a character. i wanted to make a human monk that used to be a fighter but learned to fight from monks at monastery. but i don't know what would be normal stats for him because i have no clue . i am using the roll 20 website to make my character, anyone able to help me out a bit?
Have you had a look at the Basic Rules yet?
no i thought making class would be good start 😛 should i read rules first?

It would.
To answer your question while you read the rules, the method of picking stats is usually determined by your DM. You can assign some practice stats, but be prepared to change them if your DM requires a different method.
I know theres a whole tab for looking for group but me and my bf are pretty new to this only with knowledge weve gained on our own looking. We just looking for someone to teach us
We have alot of basic knowledge
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
You're not generally going to get one on one teaching, there's just too many prospective players
But if you have specific questions people are happy to answer as they have time.
And you'll learn more as you get a chance to play/practice building characters
The basic rules and other resources pinned in this channel are also good places to start
I am willing to share my wisdom and knowledge to whoever requires it
damm that was a lot of info that i just read haha
and i havent read all of them even haha just creating a character
You don't have to memorize everything. Having a baseline understanding is important, but there will be 4 other people at the table to help you remember things, and you can always use the rule books while playing
Anyone available to help answer questions I have about DnD combat (basics) Magic Items and such, just a brief few other questions on a call or here?
Just ask your questions here. We're happy to answer.
I’m a new to the game as a whole, I am trying to become a DM for my friends so we can have games together such
So I am trying to implement stuff like a campaign that they can follow and keeping the flow going with a reason, so basically preparing a story first the. Implement engaging combat and rewards for the players
Best to start by running a published campaign
Now where would I find that? I have the starter box set including the rules and Lost mines of Phandalin

That leads right into the dragon cult arc, iirc
I have ran a few games for them off the top of my head and let them be crazy, also that would be an issue, I will make a whole campaign but I am dealing with a party of crazy individuals
You can find the free into adventure Intro to Storm Wreck Isle here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/intro-to-stormwreck-isle?icid_medium=ddb&icid_source=article-198&icid_campaign=starter-adventures&icid_content=intro-stormwreck
I know it’s common to not know what your players are going to do, your campaign could never even see the light of day with players like that, it’s the off stuff I’d find it difficult to deal with
If you want DMing advice then head on over to #dm-discussion
You can control that somewhat.
Is that the best place to ask these questions also a newcomer? My apologies if this is the wrong place
Dm advice is semi-secret
This channel more for helping new players learn the rules of the games rather than about DMing.
So it tends to be done over there.
Ohhhh my bad, makes sense
This is where having a session zero can help set expectations and communicate with each other. It’s important to learn if the type of game players want to participate in is the type of game a DM wants to run.
Yeah my sessions 0 last around 10mins since they wanna hop in and go
Imma hop in the other chat
Lost Mine is a published adventure, which has suggestions for what to do after.
Will do. In the meantime, I believe this video about DMing by pointy hat can help you greatly. https://youtu.be/yUhWlfH68L4?si=O2hQtuTfkgBm5tbV
For some reason I just can’t wrap my head around the concept of making your own campaign
Well, the good news is that is completely optional. Even if you are a DM, there are plenty of published adventures for you to use.
Some folks run the game for decades and never homebrew a thing. Like Colossus beat me to saying, there's scads of stuff you can use or lightly adapt.
Or do it with a framework. I favour the Five Room Dungeon approach. Put three of those together, some kind of common element linking them, escalation and revelation along the way, and you can get a perfectly serviceable 3-6 session campaign going.
I’m hoping I can get better at roleplay eventually
It requires practice, just like everything else

I'm new to dnd and I'm interested in being taught the rules and hopefully being brought into a group to campaign with. I'm not too sure where to begin but this feels like a good start
hello. i wanted to ask if someone know how i setup dnd online.
Sure, what do ya need help with?
Completely depends on what ressources you're willing to use
i dont know how to download it
I guess for starters what's are some things I should know before starting
In terms of rules or principles?
Both?
Lets start with the basics:First,ya gotta choose what you want to start with,do ya wanna be a game master and make your own group?Or a player trying to find an already existing group?
i meant the dnd online video game
I'd like to find an existing group
dnd isnt a video game
(Why do I feel like one of those automated mcdonalds menu?)
Then ya wan't to be a player. So for a start, watch some youtube about character creation, there are hundreds of those out there
there are many video games, like dungeons and dragons online and more
Haha sorry, I can do that
This server is dedicated to the tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG).
Why did ya say sorry?
Don't mean to make tou feel like McDonald's
Is mayonnaise an instrument?
Probably have a read of the rules yourself. They're the second link in the bot post above your message
Heya, anyone got anyway to join a DnD session? I'm a bit new, can't figure out who to play with and how.
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Hey there all, I’m newish to DnD (played 3.5 once) but would like to get up to speed with 5th edition. Anyone have an open slot and would be willing to teach me the ropes again?
Yo same situation here bud
im sorry you keep getting redirected to different channels, the one Spam linked should hopefully be the right one this time
You can also look on places like Roll20, facebook pages and subreddits dedicated to LFG (Looking for groups)

I had a question about my recent experience
We the players basically outrolled our way out of the whole session the DM had prepared, is this normal or was this bad prep?
Can you elaborate on this?
Basically we avoided every counter
You avoided every possible fight? Okay, there's nothing with that.
Well we had one fight
Against one enemy, and then there was a dragon we were supposed to fight but the fight stopped after one round because a player said I want to talk to the dragon now
There should be nothing wrong prep-wise for the DM if the PCs avoided fights. That's player agency right there.
If the DM let you talk to the dragon to stop the fight, then presumably they were okay with that
I’m also a new player so I may just not know what to expect
They also said this doesn’t happen much for them lol
This is probably what it is ^
We just rolled our way at our most of the encounters and I guess that’s just part of it
some games you will roll high and crush like that.. other games, hit all lows. Dice do that 🙂
Hard to explain but the game was cut short because of how high we rolled a few times lol
From the looks of it, as Old man mentioned, the DM adjusted to player agency by going with a solution that didn't require combat.
Which I consider it as good thing because it can frustrating for players to be forced into a combat scenario, regardless of player choice.
If you want to have sessions that include more combat encounters and have it last a certain number of rounds, it's important to relay that to your DM and fellow players at the table.
I’m still learning the game so maybe less combat is better for now, but they said what happened this session almost never happens
Still I encourage you to relay your thoughts to your group.
Highlighting what you enjoyed and what you would like to see more of in future sessions can be extremely valuable to a DM and provide goals for the group to strive towards.
Hello i am a new player i haven't ever played a single game of dnd but I'd to to.

Hi everyone im also new to both D&D and this discord channel
Welcome to the hobby as well
Take your time exploring the resources in the bot post above, and if either of you have any questions feel free to ask.
Hey everyone! I’m new to D&D. I’ve played one game with my cousins a while back, but don’t really remember much. I was looking for some help with these things:
Do you get to choose your character class and name?
Also i’ve had the app “D&D Beyond” but didn’t know how to navigate it, so i deleted it after like a day. I think I’ll watch some YouTube videos on it. But is that an app that you can play actual games?
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!
Yes most aspects of your character are chosen by you.
No dnd beyond is only used to make characters .
Oh alrighty. Thanks!
In general, yes you do get to make your own character. Some options may be unavailable for you to choose depending on certain factors including but not limited to:
- What books or character options you’ve paid for
- What the DM allows within their game
For example, the basic rules don’t include the Artificer class, which you’d have to pay for. In another example, a DM may not allow you to play a Tabaxi (catlike humanoid) because they don’t exist in their custom setting.
As for D&DBeyond, it acts as a hub for character creation (and by extension character sheet hosting), as well as an online hub for the official 5e books. It contains various tools for DMs as well, such as an encounter builder. As a player you can use the digital character sheet for most aspects of the player side of play, since it streamlines some of the requirements of using a physical sheet (i.e. clicking a button to roll vs. rolling & adding up dice, item/feature lookup, etc)
I see. D&DBeyond sounds very useful. And i understand, I’ll look into the different characters and allat! Thank you
good day

Hi, I'm new to dnd and trying to create a character but I can't get it to let me sign up with my Google account, can someone help me?
Hello, I need some help in running a semi custom session. Anyone that can help can dm me.
If you're referring to dndbeyond #ddb-support should be able to help you with that.
Yeah I am
Thank you for the help 😁
If you're new to dnd I'd recommend running a pre-written adventure as that can do a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

Well... idk if this is allowed or not but I want to run a campaign for 2 people. Couples session. Me and the missus. But it is a currently running youtube campaign that's using 5e and I want to use part of the lore? Is that allowed?
Not following the story but set in the same world.
Idk if I can do that or not. Sorry of I can't.
You can run a short campaign using a pre-established setting.
Idk how I would do it tho. And I know this is frowned upon but I'm using chatgpt as a dm. I just need some pointers to get us started on said campaign in the same setting. I would rather have an actual dm but funds are low and I can't afford it.
I would just like some help or maybe someone that could point me in the right direction.
You can run a simple session of "You meet in a tavern... and the tavern owner sidles over and says, "Hey would you like to earn some gold? I got a rat problem in the basement." "
If you want to run a duo style dnd game, this video by Ginny Di on how she ran a D&D game for one player can be insightful: https://youtu.be/5WH0yEY5uo8
If the preference is for both of you to be players, I'd strongly recommend going to tabletop game shop or library and attend a dnd event.
I understand that, however, I have never played before and have 0 experience dming. And the world I'm talking about is something that we both enjoy watching. So it would make an easy transition.
I appreciate that. Social anxiety tho 😅
Which is why I'm taking baby steps.
Ptsd and all that... I don't like crowds.
While it can be greatly helpful to have experience in dnd to DM, it is possible to DM a game with no experience.
There are even pre-written adventures made specifically for new DMs.
My neighbor goes to a comic book shop and plays. But I have issues. Which is why I'm trying to ease into it.
Yessir. This is for me and the missus and see if she wants to get into it but I definitely want to. So I kinda want something easy to start with ya know?
JRod actually im also trying to learn and make a simplistic DnD campaign. My daugher is 9 and just started liking DnD after seeing me play Baldurs gate 2 and her and I watching Honor among Thieves. She really enjoyed that movie and the story telling aspects of both DnD things shes come across so far.
Another option could be for both of you to play Baldurs Gate 3.
I'm trying to make one off of my favorite dnd channel. And I'm stuck
Almost finished baldurs gate 3. Awesome game.
Gnome warlock. Based of off my main character on WoW.
If you want to run your own dnd campaign, I strongly recommend playing a pre-written adventure.
More specifically an adventure designed to be completed in a single session, lasting about 2-4 hours.

Yeah i understand that. However, the way I get my missus to stick to it initially is with a campaign that she knows and has seen me watching.
😂
So if I can do one with something she knows I expect I will have succes and I shall have someone to play dnd with.
For parents I highly recommend going to the dnd beyond website as they just recently released a free copy of a LEGO D&D adventure, it can be a great family activity.
Legos + d&d = greatness
Lego D&D definitely sounds like something she would love ill check that out now
Then I'd recommend visiting #dm-discussion to bring DM specific questions there.
Do understand this approach is going to require more work as you'll be juggling learning the D&D mechanics, creating an original campaign, and learning how to design a game for one player.
I understand. Thank you.
yo, new to dnd can someone show me what to do?
Hiya👋 im a somewhat experenced player lookin for a group

Thanks!
Welcome
I hope i can find a game. Its been very challanging
Always tough but you'll find one. I'd look for ones that welcome new players
How do I make my own character?
Have you read the basic rules on character creation?
Once you've looked over the Basic Rules, pick a class: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
And a race:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
And always start with the Standard Array method - you can change it later if you need.
Switching from Standard Array to something else isn’t as easy if you’re doing it by hand, though.
I’d say always start with whichever method your DM says to use.
(But if you don’t have a DM yet, then yeah, Standard Array is a safe choice.)
Point Buy is a bit more flexible then for example the standard array as you can freely put points into the abilities you need without throwing anything out of balance with other party members if they use the standard array or point buy as well.
Ok thanks
Standard Array is basically just one specific outcome of Point Buy.
So they’re on pretty even footing power-wise.
Whereas rolling for stats has a lot more variability.
The important thing is 99% of DMs are likely to reject rolled stats that they haven't seen rolled (unless they happen to be possible with point-buy).
My quick summary on the difference between a Point Buy and the Standard Array: You can use Point Buy to recreate the standard array. But, the standard array is guaranteed to give you a penalty in one attribute. If, like me, you don't like having a penalty to a roll, you want to point buy (and my personal semi-default outcome is 15, 13, 12, 10, 10, 10).

The folks over in #character-discussion could help you out!
Mice and Mystics is a neat game and good kind of intro to dungeon crawlers. Did you just pay Sorrow & Rembrance, or were you able to play through any of the expansions?
alright, thank you
I played thru one expansion and I loved it nez and flinch were my go tos
A newbie question since it feels weird:
I have a Level 1 fighter right now, with a 16 in DEX and the Archery fighting style.
My question is: does the light crossbow count as a simple weapon? Because, in that case, my fighter should have proficiency in it.
So, when I roll to hit, I have a +3 (DEX) +2 (Proficiency) +2 (Archery), or a +7 to hit, or am I wrong?
I think the light crossbow is a martial weapon, but that otherwise sounds right. You're proficient anyway as a fighter.
Fighters have proficiency with every weapon
What I'm double-checking is that archery doesn't add to damage instead of to-hit.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons you can see weapon categories here
light crossbows are simple weapons
archery does add to the attack roll
It's attack. So yeah, +7 to hit is right.
you are correct on all accounts
I'm old, Cat. I no longer have the encyclopedic memorized how all of the everything interacts that I did as a teenager. 🙂
Oh ok then. It's kinda weird, because I did my character sheet with the DM, and I noted a d20+5. I will ask him about it tonight
Thank you nonetheless!
fair, lol
d20+5 is probably without archery
Most likely. Maybe we simply both forgot about it 😅
Seems like a good bet. Your damage is recorded as 1d8+3, right?
Yup
Then you're set!
Yeah. I was trying to analyze whether the GM had swapped teh archery to-hit bonus as a damage bonus instead.
My archer fighter hasn't hit the table in a hot minute. Stupid pandemic, then with my AL home game falling apart.
i have seen many D&D thing and want to get back into D&D but i'm need some help relearning somethings
just trying to understand some D&D terns and i have played some campaigns that use D&D beyond or other D&D things
Can you be more specific? Which terms don't you understand?
We'll be happy to help if you have any specific questions!
oh okay

hi. was just wondering if there are any common pitfalls to fall into when playing wizard as a fresh player with a first time dm. I dont wanna steal the spotlight from the rest of the party and solve everything with magic, and neither take away the fun of surprises and other fun stuff the dm can come up with. I'm currently playing a hexblade 1/wizard 1 after 2 sessions with the group. We are currently a rouge, pally, warlock, sometimes an extra bard, and me. I took hexblade after a spook when someone took 7 dmg in a single attack at lvl 1 so wanted some more durability (and possible magic missle blasting). can link a character sheet if its necessary
Main pitfalls are struggling with managing all your spells
as in what spells to take or managing the spell slots from 2 different classes?
Both, plus deciding what spells to cast when
-
player consideration outside the game: a wizard is as good as its spell usage. Learn your spell list, read guides, think ahead incombat with different situations (consider alternatives before they happen). The class is the strongest, if used well, but that requires effort
-
you arent as fragile as the stereotype. Ignore the small hit dice, the Shield Spell and Mage armor as mandatory (until you get better equipment at least). After INT/CON, you want the dex
Managing spell slots means thinking about what encounters are worth burning slots vs using cantrips
also, make liberal use of ritual spells
They are extremely useful outside of combat and dont need to br prepared for a wizard, just learn good
got shield medium armor proficiency from hexblade as well as armor of agathys and the shield spell always prepared. Do i still need mage armor at that point ?
as for ritual spells i'm gonna have the essentials for a party (some of the reccomended stuff from treantmonk)
If you have those proficiencies you’re set on defence
i would assume i would need the components for the warlock spells (like a glass of water for armor of agathys) instead of being able to use the arcane focus of a wizard right ? But it can upcast with wizard spell slots if needed?
Wizards and Warlocks both use arcane foci so there’s no conflict in using one focus for the other’s spell slots.
To your second question, yes you can use your Pact Magic spell slots to cast your Wizard spells as well as your Spellcasting spell slots to cast your Warlock spells
oh i definitely overlooked the warlock arcane focus part. thanks a ton :)
Although you certainly could, it's usually highly recommended not to try multiclassing as a new player, especially when both those classes are spellcasters. Multiclassing can be extremely complicated, and it's very easy to make a particularly weak character by accident.
even through a single level dip? ill be 1 lvl behind on spell progression so i can see how it can be a big hurdle, but hexblade is very frontloaded power wise
It is the usual recommendation, yes, even with notoriously powerful subclass picks. Better to understand your current class before you decide to mix things up. You can always pick up a multiclass later as you get more used to the game, but I wouldn't go in with the plan to immediately start trying to reach some complicated build ideal.
oh it was just to get some good ac and armor of agathys after the big scare from the first real encounter (would have oneshot me). The dm told me he has some big plans for the hexblade dip rp wise as well, which i'm looking forward to. I guess i should also specify its not a power gamer campaign, since most of us came with somewhat wacky ideas for pcs
Is there a campaign that I can join and learn about D&D, Ive never played but it looks interesting
I recommend you read the free Basic Rules first so you understand the fundamentals first before trying to find a game to join (it may take you days to weeks to find a good table).

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
I kinda understand the basics, my cousin made me make a character sheet before she bailed on me @cobalt frigate
There is still more than just character creation (chapters 1 to 4). There are rules on abilities and skills (chapter 7) and combat (chapter 9).
Id personally rather learn whilst playing honestly, i dont learn by reading, it goes straight through my head
I'm being honest. You may find a DM that can give you a private tutor but as a forever DM it would be more appealing for me if the player came to my table and understand the fundamentals of the game. Having to pause the game constantly to teach someone something that they should have read in the Basic Rules slows the game down and is unfair to the other players.
Again, there are the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos if you don't want to read walls of text. However, D&D is a game of rules and you can't forever ignore reading the rules.
Check #find-a-game for games.
Are there really THAT many rules tho?
Yes.
But again, read up on chapters 1-4 on character creation. chapter 7 on abilities and skills, and chapter 9 on combat.
Is there someone who can make me one?
You don't need to memorize them. You just need to get a basic understanding. You can reference the Basic Rules later as you play.
Make you one what?
Character?
its its any help. the basic understanding comes fairly quickly after skimming through the rules
Best you try and make one yourself using the rules. We can help you out if you get stuck though!
It just seems SUPER confusing from what i have actually done
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Dndbeyond can also walk you through the character creation.
The are pre built characters available for you on the website linked above. That being said, in order to understand how to play your character, it's best if you build one yourself. There's a step by step guide to character creation in the basic rules.
Best to keep things simple at first. Just focus on one race and one class, and have a go at making that character. Once you make one, you understand 90% of making any other character really.
What do i use to make it tho?
The bot links above has everything you need to get started.
Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
My cousin told me to use pathbuilder for it but idk
Do you have dnd beyond
Yeah I use it for my online campaign and it works great for beginners and it’ll teach you how to build a character as well
Pathbuilder sounds like it's made for Pathfinder, which is not D&D but another Table Top RPG
dnd beyond or roll20?
i have like 300$ worth of books in dnd beyond and i like their home brew options
Pathbuilder is for Pathfinder 2e, which is a different RPG
i prefer using paper too bc i do not have a subscription and i want to use homebrew
I got about 500 dollars worth of paperback copy’s so I’m pretty set on that
but i found roll20 for other ttrpgs and was wondering if it’d be worth it to repurchase my favorites over there if it had better mechanics
I have no clue to be honest ever since I was 6 I’ve always done paper until recently so I couldn’t tell ya
yeah… think i’ll just stick to dnd beyond to look at the books but keep all my characters and stuff on paper
i own like 27 books in dnd beyond
for some reason i have “curse of strahd: character options” but not “curse of strahd” lmao
I only have the sample and all the free stuff you get
What race should i be if i wanna be a spell based character?
There’s no specific race for magic I think
i got my first job and had no financial responsibilities fresh out of highschool and spent my first pay check on dnd books
All my books have been gifts
probably a good idea
Yeah
Ive sent in a DM request
Idk If anyone wants to add me tho XD
I wonder if there is anyone who would add me to their game XD probably not
Your ability to cast spells is almost entirely from your class
The rules allow any race be any class so…pick whatever interests you.
Some races have limited innate spell casting that mostly wont drastically affect your build.
Oke
For the purpose if making a practice character just set it to milestone, it doesnt matter and can be changed. Your mew character should start at level and use pointbuy or standard array
Like I said, ill just see what the actual campaign i find is basing it off of
If I can find one that is
You are free to make as many characters as you want for practice
still worth making a test character
In fact, I encourage you to do so, to learn which will make your experience in a campaign easier
Hello, I just joined server and read through rules and pins on this channel and rules on how to find a game. I've never played D&D before, so should I find a game then make a character or first make character then find game?
furthermore if there are any character creator sites or articles on rules can you say them (I know nop links are allowed so I'll look for it myself)
Go through the character creation process for practice so you know how it works
When you make a campaign you can adapt as needed
How long does it take for a dm to answer
hi
ok, should the introductory demo and chracter sheet linked in pin suffice to learn?
Its where to start
No way to predict as there are many players
Whats more common? Open world or dungeon?
There's no set time. If you've posted in LFD, you're better off also checking the #looking-for-players posts and reaching out to people as well. There are significantly more prospective players than DMs, so many never need to look at the other listings.
There are a million dnd games being played, nobody can quantify “whats common”
Ill change my question, whats easier for a new dm to narrate and manage? A dungeon or an open world
Probably a dungeon
Though in my experience, most games have at least a little of both. You rarely spend the entire time in a dungeon
Dungeon is more "linear" than an open world, so easier for a DM to control what encounters the PCs may face.
"Megadungeon" is style of game that most, if not all, of the adventure takes place in a massive multi-level dungeon.
I mean, we’re getting far afield of newcomer territory but player freedom only means as much as the DM wants it to
You can slap a dungeon with a fixed path on the table or an entire landscape map, either way the players arent going anywhere beyond where you allow them do. The illusion of choice is part of the game
I want an open world, are there maps available and descriptions of each place, or do i have to make my own?
If you're running an existing adventure, there's usually at least some setting information for the 'overworld'
If you're making up your own world or want extra details that aren't included, you'd have to do that yourself
Bro why arent there any people in my timezone dming
hi
It is strongly recommended for a new DM to use a prewritten adventure
Finding a game takes time, this isnt a video game that is simple to drop in
Much like playing the game, which also requires patience.
No, what i mean is that i scrolled through #looking-for-players for like 20 mins and didnt see ONE aus timezone
Did you find anything in philippine timezone
my point remains - it will take time for you to find a game that suits tou
Idk
this really isnt the place to haggle about finding a game, the channels are there for you to use. You are also encouraged to look for games in many places
Idk, mby d&d is too confusing for me
Its a game. There are many other games out there, try different ones and play what you like
Did you find anything with UTC/GMC+5-8?
Its just that i do want to play it but from everything ive read it just seems too confusing
I saw a few utc and gmc
Thanks I'll try and see
If i could join
I'm a player looking for a dm and campaign to join, what channel do i go to
What parts are you confused about?
Don't pass something off as too confusing just at first glance
I'm also confused with actions, do I just do everything I can do that is available to me? Does a reaction use an action?
Ive tried to watch multiple campaigns to see how the game works but nothing ever makes sense, and the ads for the apps are also just confusing, like I said, it would help if i got a game but there arent any aus ones
Try having a look at the actual basic rules
they're linked in the pinned messages of this channel
on each turn, you get three main things: movement, action, and bonus action.
your movement simply allows you to move up to your speed
The other two can each be spent to use an ability that can be done as that thing
such as the attack action
A reaction is a special thing. From the start of one of your turns to the start of your next turn, you have one reaction you can spend
Abilities that use reactions will specify a trigger
if you have an ability that uses a reaction, and it's trigger happens, you can choose to spend your reaction to use that ability
your reaction is then spent until you regain it at the start of your next turn
Oh that means I can only do a reaction if I have an ability that has a reaction to a certain action that will happen?
pretty much, yeah
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/shield the shield spell here is a good example of something that uses your reaction
the trigger is on the asterisk at the bottom of the text
"which you take when you are hit by an attack or targeted by the magic missile spell"
so it's one reaction, which you take on that trigger
I read all of that 6 times and it still confused me
its in the name. its a reaction to something
as a beginner dungeon master, do you let your players choose what kind of story (like high fantasy, dark, uhh) its gonna be or do you just throw them in?
all of the basic rules?
I highly doubt you fully read them 6 times
No i mean what you said
It should generally be a group decision with the DM and players
About the turns or whatever
Without a basic understanding that obv won't make sense
that was directed at Yippie, not you
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules the basic rules are here, I recommend you start with them
in my experience, the DM knows ahead of time what they will run and see how their players feel about it and take part in an adventure like that.
Sometimes the players can change the vibe of that story, or a moment.. but I would say the DM is 75% they are running (expecially if it's a published adventure.. kind of has some themes baked in)
D&D is ultimately a game of group storytelling, so your players will probably be more invested if they get to tell a story that excites them. It’s worth getting their opinion on it.
ic, its their first time playing and my first time DMing, is it better for it to be homebrewed (all i homebrewed is just combat)?
I had this campaign in mind based off an anime named grimgar of fantasy and ash.
start with a trope and some keywords, and do a classic session zero to find out what you as a group want
wdym you homebrewed combat?
i hope that meant encounters and not combat system
in the anime, the weight of the combat matters being more grounded and such, basically turning every melee class into some kind of battlemaster, with locational damage?
I really wouldn't recommend that
If this is your first experience with dnd you won't have the knowledge needed to make balanced changes
If you want it to be anime style, maybe find a different system that fits that better
Something like Fabula Ultima, maybe
idk how you'd use the dnd rules and system for that type of combat, though it sounds cool
the anime is known for its realism really, i dont know what that is @.@ i guess i might opt to just follow the base rules.
you can still flavor it how ever you like. take a goblin's stats and just give it a new look
add some flavour and watch the magic happen
fabula ultima is a different ttrpg that's inspired by JRPGs and may be closer to the theme you want
but also, you could just reflavour dnd combat
whats meant by "reflavour"?
Change how it's described
make minor tweaks to mechanics, homebrew items/spells
So you could reflavour a longsword into a katana
no?
the point of reflavouring is specifically to not make mechanical changes
ig reflavour would be the wrong word for what i described
oh, so i just give them a katana with the stats of a longsword?
pmuch
fireball = grenade or w/e
ic
You could reflavour a tabaxi as a humanoid fox, or a shield spell as a gust of wind knocking the attack away
very useful info, themks, i probably need to ask them more then
just quickly googled the anime. should work well with the dnd system as it kinda seems like high fantasy? very typical classes and magic ?
i mean, its only got humans, its an isekai type anime but very realistic in combat and ig p hard so i was gonna make it a little easier but yeah, i might just stick to classic first. I guess its more dark fantasy?
nothing stops you from sticking to humans
and just take the stats from what ever race people wanna play
good idea, well, i gotta ask them first though, themks again
just quickly googled the characters from the series and a lot of the classes are in dnd as well
yeah only thing they dont have is a "dread knight" but that could probably somekind of hexblade warlock?
Conquest paladin, oathbreaker paladin, or hexblade warlock could all work very easily
dread knights in grimgar can like summon demons, closes to things are warlocks imo
Yeah then a hexblade warlock would work well
Hii
how does one play dnd
Idk
Hello, I wanted to ask about spells and cantrips. Whats the diffrence and how would I get them during an actual game (Do I start with all of them or add them 1 by 1 as it goes on)
I’m like completely new
spells cost a spell slot or mana, and cantrips are free!

Thanks, I'm trying to set up my character by the end of sunday so since school starts monday for me. By the way when we post to find a game can we also post our availability?
Yeah generally helps
The template includes a space where you add that
Hey! I've done dnd before and have been assigned as a leader before, but I'm still getting used to it. Any advice?
What do you mean "leader"?
Dungeon master my bad had a brain fart when I was writing
If you want DMing advice then head on over to #dm-discussion
Okay thank you
Just wanted advice in general since I'm still new
I don't think I'll be a DM anytime soon since I'm still kind of new
cantrips can be cast at will, spells cost spell slots. Your class/source of spellcasting says how many you start with and when/how you gain more
creating my wizard character and was wondering how many spells can i learn at level 1? or is that determined by the dm?
Hey, I would like to know if there are any starter tips that could be helpful?
Read the free Basic Rules, especially on character creation (chapters 1-4), abilities and skills (chapter 7), and combat (chapter 9).
May versión 1.0 work?
Could I use dispel magic like counter spell? Such as if an attack was being thrown at me could I dispel it

Ty!
No. Dispel Magic has a casting time of an action while Counterspell has a casting time of a Reaction.
Dispel Magic only affects a creature, object, or magic effect, not a spell.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/dispel-magic
Choose one creature, object, or magical effect within range.
I see thanks
Counterspell is an interupt (hence the Reaction casting time).
uh, new to DMing, what if my player says they want to start at lv0? so just, ability scores & background? (their first time playing, insists to start at level 0)
BTW when I level up do I have to choose a new spell or can I hold on to the empty slot?
Also when multi classing do I only level up 1 class at a time?
You dont have to but taking more spells would be encouraged
well the idea is to take two higher level spells later
You can replace spells out of combat whenever you please
for what class? sorcerers and warlocks can switch spells on levelling up
Well as you level up, you learn more spells and can unprepare and prepare different ones
Yeah, I'm trying to roleplay a character in a book I'm writing. I'd need to dual class in warlock and scorcer to get all the stuff I want
and progression looks a bit iffy
A wizard has the most flexibility as they can simply spend money to copy spells into their spellbook to switch in between
I unlock my second class cantrips as soon as I get my second class right?
I believe you only get the ones of your first class. I dont really mutliclass so
Thanks, I'm trying hard to plan out the role play. but the warlock class doesn't have the variety I was looking for.
There is no level 0.
Yeah warlocks are a bit different
could look on to sub-classes if they have what your looking for
Warlocks dont get many spells but to compensate, they get their spell slots back on a short rest rather than a long rest
A common warlock play is to really just hex an enemy and bombard them with eldritch blasts
yeah, ik but i was thinking maybe i could put them in some fantasy story where they choose their class in rp? i did tell them there is no lv0 lol.
I'm using dnd beyond to build since it seems to be the best site for it. I don't see anything about adding a sub-class
Its a basic but highly effective strategy
Subclasses are not available until level 3, excluding clerics
Who get their domain at level 1
Don't make more work for yourself than you need to.
Level 1 PCs are squishy already as it is.
Especially a spellcaster
spellcasters are so squishy at level 1 that they can get 1 shot by fodder enemies
fair
coming back to this msg, should I start sorcerer and immediately multi into warlock afterwards. (sorcer starts with 4 cantrips while warlock only 2)
Not just clerics, Sorcerers and Warlocks get theirs at level 1 too, and there are also classes that get it at level 2 (at least Wizard, maybe I'm forgetting one?)
You get cantrips from your secondary class too, as soon as you get their spellcasting feature (which for both Sorcerer and Warlock is at their first level)
Druids get theirs at level 2 also
I am ashamed I forgot about my favorite class. Thanks!

Oh no
Does anyone have any tips/advice for when your OOC personality gets in the way of your character?
I'm playing a bard, but I low-key don't know how to be charming or charismatic irl. It is something my character should be able to do, but I have trouble coming up with things for my character to say because I simply don't know how.
You can describe things in the third person; rather than you saying something charismatic as your bard, you say "My bard smoothly suggests the guard let them past, giving a charismatic wink"
You no more have to be charismatic than a player playing a fighter has to swing a sword

Check out the basic rules above! The core concepts you should try to nail down are character creation, how combat works, and what abilities your character has.
I'd include learning these common terms in that list, too.
mamma mia, looks a lot, but I am determined. Many thanks!
Yeah, it is a lot.
But you don't have to learn it all at once, and you don't have to learn it by heart.
If you just learn where to find the answers, you can always look them up as needed.
Its good to have a baseline knowledge on things, but don't feel like you have to memorize everything before you start. There will be 4 other people at the table with you to help you remember anything you might forget. And you can always check the rule book while playing, too. For now, you should start with the rules for character creation, and for how combat works
Is a "one-point" or "campaign" usually done physically with d# dices and player manual? Or can an adventure be done online?
you can play however you want to as long as you have a way to communicate and roll dice
and do you mean one shot?
That I do, heheh
There's plenty of ways to play online, such as using Virtual Table Top programs which display the maps and scenes, and allow everyone to see the results of everyone's dice rolls
Well I'm wondering how most players do it, may I ask how you prefer to do it?
i dont really mind either way as long as its fun and whatnot

I am, thank you friend!
Thanks to you as well!
Hi everyone!
I'm new to the server (and d&d), and I just wanted to ask about how to find groups, like do I just wait in the "looking for players" channel for a DM to post something new or is it possible for me to make a post looking for a group to adopt me?
Welcome! You can send a post of your own by following the instructions in #find-a-game.
But honestly, if you're looking to join as a player, you'll probably have better luck with the first approach. 😅
In my experience, being proactive and replying to others (rather than waiting for them to reply to you) is more likely to succeed.
ah I see...
one last thing, I got the player's handbook second hand from a friend, does that mean I HAVE to also buy it on d&d beyond to have access to all its features when making a character sheet? Because I already have a pdf filled with my character's details, but I've heard that d&d beyond is easier when it comes down to rolling or editing information after level ups and stuff
You can still make characters in d&d beyond with all basic races and classes with just the free basic rules on there
When I tried to make a warlock with the great old one subclass, it only allowed me to make one belonging to fiend though, isn't there a way to still have access all the player's handbook's features without having to re-buy the book?
You can homebrew it. Go to Collections > My Homebrew Creations > Create A... > choose Subclass
?books
There are five ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books
- Purchase the full book from the marketplace
- Purchase individual elements from the marketplace (options can be found within the book description)
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from dndstore.wizards.com
- Join a campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond. Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way, it is for personal use only
aaaaah ok I understand, man that's gonna be a lot of work
well I better get started with it
Thanks everyone!
Individual stuff can be purchased for 1.99
what are subclasses ?
how do i get them and what are the cleric subclasses ?
Subclasses are specialities to a class (think engineers have specialties like electrical, civil, computer, mechanical, etc). Most classes have them at level 3 but some at level 1, such as the cleric and warlock.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#DivineDomain
basically, every class gets a specialization to pick. The free cleric subclass is Life domain, there are A LOT of cleric domains in the players handbook and some more in other books
I am very new (got my players handbook 5 days ago). What guidelines do I have to follow when making homebrew content?
homebrew in general or on DnD beyond specifically?
mostly just make sure its fine with whoever you're playing with
I recommend you don't do homebrew content when you're still learning rules of the game.
free ? some of them are not free ? well that's frustrating
Hi I know nothing about dnd but open to learning
the basic game is free and includes some limited character building options, but most of the official content is in books that cost money

hi im a bit rusty on dnd how do spells work for character creation if u are multiclassing with 2 spell casters (for example: wizard lv 3/paladin lv1)
You can find the full rules for how spellcasting works while multiclassing here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Spellcasting
But if you have any more specific questions, we'd be happy to answer them for you
Hello, can someone help me build the backstorie of my caracter? i need some outside ideas.
This would probably be a better requested to make in #character-discussion
oh yeah thx
what does intimidation do?
You threaten someone.
and what happens to him? Does he just give up?
Does he become weaker?
The DM decides the DC that the Intimidation (or any other ability skill check) that needs to meet or beat to succeed. The DM decides what happens if it succeeds.
The DM may decide that the NPC/monster may not be intimidated at all despite a high roll.
gotcha
Hellooo
I've been interested in playing dnd but i dont know wich class to choose
Any recomendetions?
What type of thing interests you? ie. hitting things with weapons, casting spells, being sneaky?
Choosing a class is about choosing a playstyle. Once you know what style of gameplay you want to do, picking a class to fit that is easy
Probably casting spells for atacking and healing allies
Something like supporting
Sounds like a Cleric or Druid then
Hi I am new, I am kinda curious what the difference between a sorcerer and a cleric/druid is?
Cool!
I'll check them out
Wizard = an arcane spellcaster who studies to learn magic
Sorcerer = an arcane spellcaster naturally gifted with magic
Cleric = a divine spellcaster who has divine powers from a deity
Druid = a divine/primal spellcaster who is attune with nature
clerics and druids are prepared casters. at the end of every long rest they choose spells from their spell lists that they'll use until the next long rest. clerics are divine and druids are primal. clerics fulfill a support niche by having a ton of support and healing spells. druids have a bit of everything in their spell list and also have the ability to turn into animals
sorcerers are spontaneous casters. they always have access to their spell repertoire at any given point. they also have a resource called spell points which they can use to amplify their spells (metamagic)
sorry not spell points
i forgor what its called exactly
sorcery points
thats it
To help you understand better, since that's two large posts back to back, Mr. Cloud's response is the flavor differences between the spellcasting classes, and lats1e has provided the game mechanic differences between the classes
Thank yall!

I haven't played D&D before, but would like to start. I'd like to play a character that uses both magic and weapons. Are there recomended classes, or does that require doing a subclass? Is subclassing common in D&D?

Secondary class might be the more accurate term - I've seen somethings mention dual classing (ex. Druid + Wizard)
The D&D term would be multiclassing, and no it is neither required nor recommended for new players. Multiclassing can be common, but usually it is better to stick to one class
That's multiclassing. I wouldn't recommend doing multiclassing just yet -- just learn one class at a time.
So focus on the fiction - what do you want you character's actions to look like in the game world?
Ranger or Paladin are the main classes that can do that, however fighter, rogue, wizard, bard, and warlock all have subclasses that can do that
Preferring magic from a distance, but with ability to make a difference in a physical/close quarters battle.
Bladesinger wizard sounds best for that
OK. In your head, what is their preferred weapon? Or how heavy a set of armor are they wearing?
Maybe hexblade warlock
Druid, ranger, wizard, fighter and sorcerer are the classes that that seem the most interesting. to me
Light or medium armor. A glaive, martial arts or maybe a standard sword
Bladesinger can do single handed and light armour
OK... In my opinion, that rules out sorcerer. Martial arts/unarmed combat will be a little harder to make play with that concept, though you could reflavor a lot of monk shenanigans to look like magic.
Hexblade can do medium or light armour and most weapons
Anyone know what faith is?
Religious belief
If you mean Faith on the character sheet, it'd be whatever god you worship generally
Where would I find more info on bladesinger? I didn't come across it when reading about classes?
Yeah. I think you're describing one of maybe 4 or so things:
- A Bladesinger wizard will study hard to learn how to cast spells, and work their magic through how their blade moves. They're going to tend to kite a lot (hit and run).
- The Hexblade Warlock is going to own some kind of enchanted/cursed bladed weapon - stereotypically a sword. they've got the medium armor proficiency. The classic depiction in fiction wuld be Elric of Melnibone.
- Some Ranger builds can handle what you're describing, tough they don't have a lot in the way of attack magic because they tend to be weapons first, magic second. In game mechanics jargon, they're a "half-caster."
- There are a few druid builds that could do what you want with the right choice of cantrips, most notably the circles of the Land or Stars.
Bladesingers are in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide (SCAG).
Hexblades are in Xanathar's Guide to Everything. Druid circle of the Land is PHB; Stars is Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
In D&D, what are the benefits faith?
It's for roleplaying purposes.
Got it.
JC: Mechanically, nothing, unless you're playing in Theros. It's otherwise strictly flavor.
Ah - how common are the variations? I don't know when/what group I'd get a chance to play with so figured sticking to the base D&D 5e options would give me the most flexibility in finding a game
Bladesingers are probably the rarest; the others are all pretty common.
You have to ask the individual DM what they allow at their table.
That's going to vary by DM/group
Most of the PHB options are pretty safe, extra books will start being less commonly allowed
But there are certainly tables that do allow everything
So it sounds like ranger (or maybe druid) might be my best option to stick to a PHB character to keep my options more open for getting into a game
Most groups from my experience use at least a few of the additional books, Tasha’s cauldron of everything and Xanathar’s guide to everything being the most common
I think the odds are that you could get away with anything I listed. The GM may restrict bladesingers to being elves, since that's the flavor as described in SCAG.
There are also cleric domains you could use, but in general the ones who get proficiency in martial weapons (like a glaive or sword) also get heavy armor proficiency and are more focused on front-line weapon attacks than magic.
(There are also some GMs who don't like hexblades for multiclassing-related reasons -- any class that relies on charisma gets a HUGE boost from even a 1-level dip into hexblade.)
Thanks, I'll take a look at the options, or maybe work on a couple of options
For clerics, the Life domain is the free one. They get heavy armor proficiency, but not martial weapons. From the Player's Handbook, the Tempest and War Domains both get heavy armor/martial weapons, but are more focused on weapon attacks than on casting spells. similarly true for the Forge Domain from XGE, without martial weapons. Order Domain gets heavy armor but not martial weapons, but gets the schtick of being able to cast a spell (like Bless) on one or more allies and then let them make an attack.
What does con mean? For context, I made a dragonborn wizard from the silver dragon bloodline and the spell frostbite says con 11.
Constitution, essentially your health and stamina
Con stands for Constitution. Its one of your 6 ability scores, and it is what helps determine your character's HP
Thanks
When you cast a spell that requires a saving throw, the enemy must roll a d20 and meet or beat that number
what?
Hes asking about the number specifically
oh I see. I misunderstood their question
That’s specifically referring to the the number the enemy has to beat on a constitution saving throw
I will note, having a spell save DC of 11 indicates that your stats may not be great
Have a look at increasing your intelligence
What stat affects health?
Constitution
Thanks
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
In DnD beyond in the 'other' category it says
"Divine Smite, when you hit with a melee weapon attack you can expend one spell slot"
Am I supposed to leave one spell slot empty when casting?
Wdym?
How do I use divine smite?
You have a brand-new level 2 paladin, huh?
Yup
Paladins get spell slots (to start, a whole 2 of them), and can use them for one of two purposes:
- You can use them to cast (one of) the Paladin spell(s) that you know.
- Or, after you hit with a melee weapon attack, if you have a spell slot left you can use it to Smite. That does extra damage to the thing you just hit.
What I get from this is:
I attack with a melee weapon, attack again, get a bonus action, use divine smite in the end
hi everyone :]
Ohhhhhhh I see
The Smite just adds extra damage to the hit you just scored. If you scored a critical hit by rolling a 20 on the die, the Divine Smite dice are also doubled (in addition to the weapon dice)
gonna leave a slot empty fs
You simply need to spend a spell slot to use smite
I mean, you don’t need to
You only have to if you wanna smite
A lot of paladins end up coming up as what are nicknamed "crit fishing" builds. But, if you have a high-Charisma paladin, you can spellcast just as well.
1 slot = 1 smite
(I should say a lot of paladins that I've seen at a table are crit fishers)
As long as you can use actions on your turn you have a bonus action. Performing an action doesn’t “unlock” a BA. Additionally, unless stated otherwise, bonus actions can be taken before or after your action on your turn
If you have 3 slots left, does that mean 3 divine smite happen? That would be too op no?
Divine Smite also doesn’t cost a bonus action, but the smite spells called “X Smite” (X = wrathful, thunderous, etc) do
If I attack twice does that mean 2 Smites?
Only if you want to use them.
And only if you hit with both attacks
I figured that was a given from my equation above. 🙂
Does that mean I have to leave out 2 spell slots too?
No. It just means that if you have used all your spell slots, you can't smite again until you finish a long rest.
Smiting is optional.
Here's one way to think of it: Starting at second level, you get a resource that are called "spell slots". Spell slots are like money, and you can eventually get them in $1, $2, $3, $4, and $5 denominations. You can spend a spell slot to buy casting a spell, or you can spend a spell slot to buy using a smite. But once the money is gone, it's gone until your next payday (long rest)
When you start getting higher denominations of spell slots, you can buy more effective spells or more painful smites. But the resources are yours to use as you see fit.
With that, I need to start driving home for the weekend. Feel free to ping me if that explanation doesn't help, though it'll be on the order of hours before I'm likely in a position to add more.
Hey, I’m kind of proud of coming up with that explanation. The only part I left out from it is that you can’t combine bills - each purchase must be a single bill, and you can’t get change.
Quick question since we're on the topic of spell slots
How do they exactly work?
Nvm thanks
@carmine shuttle
The basic analogy holds no matter what.
Some details change from one class to another.
Dnd usually crumples at the level am playing tbh
But thanks tho

How do spell slots work? Do i spend 1 per spell?
A spell has a base level that it must be cast at. You must have a spell slot at the appropriate level to cast it. You can upcast spells (cast using a higher spell slot) but you must have an available spell slot. Upcasting may have additional benefits (more targets effected or more damage dealt).

As a heads up, you'll likely improve your chances of finding a group by showing some initiative in learning the game rules. Many groups are fine taking on a new to D&D player but the more a player comes prepared to the table, the easier it is for the group to support them. You don't have to memorize the rules but knowing the terms and where to look rules up (and how your character works) is extremely helpful to playing the game.
New player
Check out the info here
Dnd isnt a video game that is simply picked up, it takes time and effort to learn the rules and find a game
oh
Scheduling a session is probably the most difficult thing to do in D&D.
Yep. 2 of my groups members recently got new jobs so its hard for them to come alot
hey i'm new to DND and looking for a group to play with
i have a half-way idea of a 2 player same 2 people dm to do with my partner, its more like a roleplay than a campaign i guess you could say. essentially each player has a character and lore and a character quest that take place around the same area, i was just wondering how hard would this be to execute, i don’t want to do dnd without my partner and we don’t really have anyone to do dnd with so i thought this might be a fun way to explore the dnd lore and also dming as neither of us have dmed before
I'm pretty new to DND only been playing for about a year now at school I've got a question about the monk class
Sure, what is it?
@primal hare ?
What weapons can I use for the monk class, (sorry I was doing something)
Hi I am new to this all and just want some tips and help with this stuff
by default, monks have proficiency in all simple weapons and shortswords
For their martial arts stuff they can use shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don’t have the two-handed or heavy property.
have you looked at the basic rules?
So your saying it's possible to do a Kratos build? Like bare-fist and daggers?
I just am really confused
check them out, they're linked in the pinned messages of this channel
as in, 1 dagger and 1 free hand?
Well I was thinking like an Axe but where I can switch to bare fist or to the axe at times
A handaxe would work
Although I will note that for your extra BA attack you need to use an unarmed strike
handaxe in 1 hand and other hand free would work well
What level do I unlock that?
Hey uh I’m having a bit of trouble with understanding how to join a group and all that and wanted to ask for some help here
1st level
here's the martial arts stuff, which is basically what restricts what weapons you can use:
Martial Arts
At 1st level, your practice of martial arts gives you mastery of combat styles that use unarmed strikes and monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don’t have the two-handed or heavy property. You gain the following benefits while you are unarmed or wielding only monk weapons and you aren’t wearing armor or wielding a shield:
You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons.
You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or monk weapon. This die changes as you gain monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Monk table.
When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action. For example, if you take the Attack action and attack with a quarterstaff, you can also make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven’t already taken a bonus action this turn.
Certain monasteries use specialized forms of the monk weapons. For example, you might use a club that is two lengths of wood connected by a short chain (called a nunchaku) or a sickle with a shorter, straighter blade (called a kama). Whatever name you use for a monk weapon, you can use the game statistics provided for the weapon in the Weapons section.
Yeah, you can dual wield weapons as long as they're light.
There is also a straight-up feat that allows you to dual wield weapons as long as they aren't two-handed. (Dual Wielder)
If your looking for a game you can find it in #find-a-game
in general? find a group who's looking for someone to join, and ask if you can join
Communication is key if you want to get into Tabletop RPGs.

- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.

Hi, can someone explain how I can post on #looking-for-players ? Having some trouble figuring it out
Type "/looking-for-player" in any channel that has a prompt. You can do it in #find-a-game or even here.
type "/looking-for players"
The bot is giving me an error, "the message couldn't be delivered"
Reload your Discord perhaps?

If I level up a character capable of using magic, do I unlock all spells of said level or just a few?
Depends on your class.
Regardless of class, when you’re choosing spells, you can choose any spell from your class’s spell list if you’ve got spell slots for that spell level.
So when you get 2nd-level spell slots, you can now choose from 2nd-level spells.
But how many spells you can choose and how often you can change your selection varies per class.
Anyways whats alignment
Alignment is a summary of what a creature's ethics and morals are. It doesn't define them but rather the other way around.
🗣️ (I'm gonna get yelled at for not knowing the basics)
Law-Chaos is the ethics axis while Good-Evil is the morality axis.
Basically something like no sparing any life
Or what
I'm bad at this 😔
That said, concentrate on your character's Personality, Bonds, Ideals, and Flaws rather than their alignment.
Got it
Once you figured what your character is like -- then you can summarize it with their alignment. Remember that alignment isn't static or rigid -- it's just an overall summary of what you are.
Even a good person could be cranky one day and do something bad.
Yeah. If you're really not sure pin it at Neutral and ask your DM about it after your first session.
5E has put little emphasis on alignment compared to older editions, which alignment played a strong part in gameplay mechanics (there were magic items that specifically works with or against certain alignments, for example in older editions).
Again, don't worry about alignment for now. Just define your character's PBIF.
Pbif?
Personality, Bonds, Ideals, and Flaws.
