Ok thanks!
That's only if your DM allows them in their campaign setting. Plasmoid are from the Spelljammer campaign setting.
hey everyone, where do i start ??

Check out the post above to review the free basic rules. Once you have, feel free to ask questions!
What is really the difference between the type of magic a sorcerer, wizard and warlock can use?
From a purely games-mechanics perspective, the only difference is what spells are on their spell lists and how their spellcasting features work.
A fireball cast by a sorcerer is the same kind of fireball cast by a Warlock or Wizard.
i wish i knew a dm trainer
What do you mean by a "dm trainer"?
First of all have you read the free Basic Rules?
Arcane magic users:
- Artificers: Magic Engineers
- Bards: Use music/song to channel magic, generally to the benefit of their allies or detriment of their enemies.
- Sorcerers: Magic is an inborn trait that will manifest effects on either them or the world around them.
- Warlocks make a deal with a patron for power.
- Wizards spend years studying to learn how to control the forces in the world.
How much damage do thrown weapons (that are not made to be thrown like daggers) do
Say an enemy is about dead and you throw your longsword at them for a cool finisher
you can treat it as an improvised weapon:
If a character uses a ranged weapon to make a melee attack, or throws a melee weapon that does not have the thrown property, it also deals 1d4 damage. An improvised thrown weapon has a normal range of 20 feet and a long range of 60 feet.
(emphasis mine)
To elaborate, you'd also add your dexterity modifier to the attack and damage roll, since it's a ranged weapon attack (oddly enough)
I see
Hi, how can I start a game of DnD in the beyond app? I already have my character created but I dont know what to do next
DnD Beyond is like of like a portfolio of all your characters and source books, you don't actually play games on it. If you've completed your character and have read the basic rules, up next is looking for a group to play with!

Hello
Hey
I donāt remember Discord being this confusing. š
You get used to it after like a day or 2
Can an admin take that āNick the Adminā off my name please? Apparently, I forgot to fix that. š
You can do that yourself under your profile settings
Itās not letting me. I already tried or I wouldāve. lol.
Did it work this time?
Yes
āEyyy. Nice.
and now back to D&D
I just made my first D&D character on D&D Beyond. Been meaning to learn how to play this game for forever. Iād love to get into an already made D&D Beyond campaign to try this out.
Have you checked out the resources linked in the pined messages?
There's a link to the free basic rules - it would be a good idea to give that a skim.
Hey I'm In the same group jokerš¤£
Same group how? You just make one, too?
Ya
Noice!
Will do. I downloaded all of the free book resources off the site.
Iām honestly anxious to see how this character does.
Holy shit thereās a lot here to read. š
Yes - but don't feel like you have to memorize it or know everything. The big ones are knowing how your character sheet works, and the core mechanics of the different dice rolls (eg. attack roll, damage roll, saving throw, and skill check).
Getting those down (or least some basic understanding) will help you be a better player - and probably easier to join a game.
Even people who have been playing for years don't have everything memorized
The real trick is knowing where to look things up š
the things I've messed up and forgotten after playing this game for so many years lol
How long do campaigns normally last and are they things you can log out of and log back into?
Really depends on the group
It really varies.
Some campaigns span years, others are a couple of weeks or months.
Games can last a single session (referred to as a one shot) or go for years.
I think there's one campaign still running that's close to 50 years now.
All depends on the group and the story they want to tell.
I mostly play oneshots but I've been doing it with the same people for years
By log out of and log back into, do you mean like leave mid-session or mid-campaign like you might do in a multiplayer video game?
Yes.
That will also vary by group
One of the reasons my folks mostly play oneshots is because the scheduling is easier
Yes and no.
For no, sessions are typically on a set schedule (i.e. Sundays 6-9 pm GMT). Itās expected as a player you will be able to attend consistently for the full amount of time. Some groups have games at more sporadic times, but itās still expected that you attend for the full time unless: ā¬ļø
For yes, some people have life events that cause them to skip a session or have to leave a session early or attend late. Sometimes they even join a campaign halfway through or leave early due to personal circumstances. In general itās common courtesy to inform the DM and other players if youāre going to be unable to attend.
With how my life is, unless I schedule it for a weekend date, Iād be available for an hour, maybe two, most Thursday evenings but thatās about it. Thatās why I was curious.
Thereās also stuff like Adventurerās League thatās designed for folks to drop in and out.
Thatād be more my speed, probably.
Play-by-post is another good option if youāre time-constrained.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp
Hey newbie here. Just curious. Are warlocks considered weak in combat? The others in the part are barb and fighter. Whenever we are having a fight that seem to easily do 20-30 damage I'd not higher. While I struggle to do 10+ damage. Apart for with burning hands.
Thereās also whatās called a West March style game. They are typically decentralized games where one or multiple DMs run games at multiple times that you sign up for, play, and record characterās progress.
Yeah, if you can only do an hour or two at a time, I'd recommend PBP
For AL, the games are mostly oneshots, but they're still usually at least 2+ hours in a sitting
And you're expected to stay for the whole game generally
It depends on your level, gear and what all of your turns look like
In general Warlocks have pretty good DPR via Agonizing Eldritch Blast
Still early on so lvl 1-3
Is that 20-30 damage per combat or per player turn?
Hi Iām really new to dnd
Seems strange, thatās extremely above expected DPR for level 1-3
Early game, I wouldn't expect too much damage from warlocks
What gear do they have?
Does this work with that Avrae thing thatās advertised by this link? So itās all word based?
Tho, I have never seen the other players PC cards so I don't know their gear or stats admittedly
Even then, thatās what 1d10+3+10? Max 23 damage on a hit
I guess maybe 1d12 actually, but still 25 max at a -5 at level 1 seems high
Avraeās great if youāre doing a PBP here on Discord.
I got no idea on top of my head what their sub classes and such are. So can't help with that
Itās not the only way to do PBP.
Plus potentially rage damage/battlemaster or ways to get multiple attacks, depending on subclass
Iām just wanting to learn how to play while using my player card from my D&D Beyond character creation.
Iād ask how theyāre getting that DPR, since you should be lower as a warlock (for now), but not extremely so
Its doable, just not what I'd consider the average
You can try it out in #ddb-avrae-commands if you like. Try sending the message !tutorial quickstart
Iām mainly wanting to get somewhat of a grasp on it so I can teach my wife and then we can go about doing D&D games with friends and family.
And also my stats are very skewed. As I originally rolled my char to be something very different and a meme char for a one shot. But after certain relisation and the two hour one shot becoming a massive long term campaign. I decided to stick with my weird sheet
That might be a good part of it, is your Charisma at least 16?
Yeah thatāll do it haha

Also to make it all worse. The dice gods have decided that I am not allowed to hit attacks
3 combat sessions and thus far I've hit 3 attacks that are not burning hands
us there a session list somewhere?
We don't run games here. But you can check #looking-for-players
Doing burning hands as your main DPR source is likely a major source of feeling ineffective since it does 10.5 on average on a failed save (of which Dex is typically high for a lot off the monster manual) You might want to move this to #character-discussion or #optimization if youāre looking for advice to up your DPR or improve strategy, but for now:
Right now your expected DPR is ~3.6-5.9 (w/o & w/ Hex), getting that extra +3 from Agonizing Blast will seriously help. Warlocks bread and butter are cantrips (particularly Eldritch Blast).
Your allies are likely getting lucky (if not something funky going on, but Iāll give them the benefit of the doubt). Assuming theyāre both Variant Human or Custom Lineage to get SS or GWM at level 1, and using the most damaging non-magical weapons possible, their expected DPR is 7.67 (SS Fighter) to 13.11 (GWM Barb w/ Reckless Attack)
Oh no I am not looking for an optimised build. I never designed him to be good at fighting anyway. Just surprised at the massive difference between his much damage they will roll Vs what my maximum damage is at the time. So was curious if overall warlocks are considered weak early and stronger late
I finished the tutorials. Where do I actually access a campaign on Avrae?

Does anyone have any tips for being DM.
What kind of help were you looking for, specifically?
Yeah; if youāre new, donāt. lol.
I'm like is my character all right for a basic D&D session

Well no one in my group has and I've been told I'd like it.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnāt competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
You can definitely start the game by DMing. People do it all the time.
Especially if the whole group is new.
As long as everyone knows youāre all learning together, itās fine.
For some reason, when I click to accept the invite, it doesnāt do anything. š¤
You can share a link to it in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check everything.
Had to change some settings but it works now.
Can anyone help me fix my character
Uhm, anyone wanna help me make a character design? Lol
I mean sure ig
Wait if you do art could you help me make a character as well
What do you need help with exactly? Since I am just a beginner
The character was largely going to be based off of how I am since well I'm still new to D&D and I really wanted in character
Hm, well do you have a design on your mind or imagination?
I wanted a 14-year-old Fox boy character with emerald green eyes dark blue hair that could be mistaken for black darkish brown skin and a blue and white tunic
Wait a literal fox with human like characteristic
Or a human with a fox ears and tails?
A human with foxears and tail
Ah I see
Lemme create a sketch but it's not gonna be good alr?
Thanks honestly I don't really have that good art myself I have my own YouTube channel now which means I could do shout outs for you whenever I do make videos I'm still new so I don't have that much of a subscriber
Far side where are you
Hm?
New to the server, been wanting to play dnd for a while after i finished hs and had a dnd club there. Im not sure how it works in this server or if itll be online or more like how it is with a few podcasts ive listen to, but id love to get started with a group.
there are chat rooms in the server for DMs looking for players and viceversa I'm a complete noob to dnd never had a group in highschool cause the only other kids in my town that play are the wrong kind of weird but I've followed online sessions played games that use the base concepts like stat checks and such but they either had crazy rigged dice rolls or just a flat percentage instead of any dice at all, but anyway yeah i am a noob to the real game but i really want to try it out because it seems like the most fun a person could have
Hey everyone. I hope I'm not annoying anyone but I'm completely new to dnd. I have literally no idea where to start. But I listen to dnd podcasts alot and I have played baulders gate 3 lmao that's the extent to it. Looking for some guidance and recommendations tips tricks lmao

Welcome to the hobby.
The bot posts above can help you get started. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
Okay thank you. I will look into it more. Is there some kinda website or something that you can make a drawing or something of a character? I'm horrible at drawing but I see the art people can do in this group and it's cool. Jw.
Hero Forge is probably the most popular choice.

Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
I'm searching for a session
Ok thank u š
Iām entirely new to dnd and have never played before. Iāve already made a character using dnd beyond and have read the rules and kinda know the basics. How do i start?
I also want a campaign, but honestly iām just very confusedš
You can use our #find-a-game channels here to try and find a campaign
Whatās one specific thing youāre confused by?
An easy way to start is to go to your local gaming store or Barnes & Noble and ask if they can connect you to a game. Those places are popular for D&D groups, and many are quick one-shots that help you learn how to play.
Iām not sure honestly. Itās just a very confusing process and i donāt really know how to join a campaign.
Iāll probably do that. Thanks!
As far as finding a game on this server goes, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
the basics is just: 1. find a group that is happy for you to join 2. join that group

ok thanks!
hello
Hi freaking new here I just wanna play
Im new to the pen and paper set up of D&D, i usually play dungeons & Dragons Online. I believe ive run into an issue with my character creation

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Hiii, i'm starting to get into dnd and i ran into a major problem while creating my character because it's like very problematic with the lore, could anyone help me out please?
Have you talked to your DM about the lore of their campaign setting?
Nope, i think i should talk about this with my group but i haven't found one yet and wanted to hear someone's experienced opinion of it would be possible to run a character like that
I heard there's a dnd group in my college so i will ask them if i can join them, but like i'm still insecure about this character idea
If you don't have a DM then don't worry about lore because it's your DM who decides what's lore in their campaign.
Worry about your character's personality, bond, ideals, and flaws rather than how they fit in the world because you have no idea about what world you'll be joining.
Thats a great advice, i actually have most of his personality figured out, may i hear your opinion on it?
I'm also having a problem with my character its not lore so to speak its more putting the right proficiencies. My character is a Hill Dwarf Barbarian.
#character-discussion is where you can post about your character.
does the bonus attack from polearm master work with great weapon master?
TYā¤ļø
What about proficiencies is giving you trouble?
more or less selecting the right skills for my character
im possibly going to redo my rolls as well though
There are no ārightā skills. Just pick whatever helps you tell the story you want to tell.
Your background and class (and sometimes your race) will give you skills. Choose the ones that you think fits your character.
For barbarians:
Skills: Choose two from Animal Handling, Athletics, Intimidation, Nature, Perception, and Survival
Hill dwarves donāt get any skill proficiencies.
But your background may provide 1-2 more.
I wanna use my character for the upcoming virtual
For that, youāll probably want to make sure youāre following the Adventurerās League rules.
The folks in #adventurers-league can give you hand if you need.
I want to make a cowgirl character, but I donāt really understand the alignment very well
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Alignment
Alignment is really more of a guideline and suggestion. You could even leave it blank for now until you have a better grasp of your character, but the above link might help out.
Thank you so much, it was stressing me out š„²

yall wassup im new to this and want to make a campaign with my friends
had a question are homebrew campaigns easier then vanilla dnd ???
Thatās is up to opinion
Hi everyone Iām new to the dnd scene is there any games going on tbh I have no idea what Iām doing but Iāve seen a lot of stuff about it online and I do have rp experience but definitely would love to learn and play.
As in, easier to create?
Welcome! Check the links pinned in this channel to get started. I recommend reading through the basic rules
Thanks star of the light Iāll check out the basic rules
If you want to find a game to play using this server specifically thereās #find-a-game
yup and to dm too
lets say for example ajojo campaign
Some concepts don't mechanically work well within D&D's rules mechanics because the game is designed around a heroic fantasy RPG concepts and framework
Generally a pre-written campaign will be much easier
Anime campaigns do not work well with dnd
couldnt pre written campaign be played with no dm tho ???
And we aren't saying it can't be done - but you may find it easier to work with a game ruleset designed around anime
gaddamn
The dm still needs to run the campaign, control the monsters, adjudicate actions, etc
Iām assuming by your question and your desire to run games that youāre asking if homebrew worlds or official settings are easier to create and run. Iām going to say it depends.
Official settings have plenty of pre-written modules that make the game significantly easier to run especially for new players. However, it can be overwhelming if youāre the sort of person who likes to know every detail about every person/place/thing, as those things sometimes have decades of lore to sift through.
Homebrew settings can be creatively easier to run because as the DM you are more intimately familiar with how the world works- you can more easily shape lore as you see fit. It also can help accommodate a wider range of themes and ideas, such as an anime-inspired campaign. Just keep in mind a mechanical transference is an entirely different issue
Most Tabletop RPG games have a concept of a Game Master who helps guide the game and adjudicate the rules.
hmmm i see so it all depends on how familliar the dm is with the world building and characters ???
Thatās one way to look at it
if someone already brewed a mechanics for that specific power system its should be easy
Pre written campaigns also give a good sense of pacing, plot development, loot distribution, NPC variety, combat design, etc
That word "easy" is doing a lot of work there!
DM'ing is work.
Homebrewing (creating custom things) is work.
Balancing it all is work.
I will say that just because someone has made a custom rules addition for JoJo powers does not mean itās a good rules addition nor an easy rules addition
ight imma strat cooking thank you š

Hi there! I've been trying to get into DnD for a while but just now started out officially. Currently working on understanding character sheets. š„²
Welcome to DnD!
Welcome! Anything about character sheets we can clarify for you?
Right now I don't have any questions but when I do, I'll be sure to ask. Thank you for the warm welcome!
It definitely helps, so you know what type of game the DM is running and wheter your character fits the story, and some have different ways of character creation (Like how they rule ability scores)
But you don't need a DM if you're just making a character for practise / for fun, or if you're planning a general idea of your character that can be changed if necessary
I think I need the DM to help me because my character is helpless
I didnāt even give him a shield
No character ever needs a shield.
And a good number of them can't really use shields anyway.
What type of character did you make?
Iām new to dnd, how do you play and how does it work?

DnD is a cooperative story-telling game, typically played around a table in person, over voice chat using a few programs online, or through text chat. It tends to have one Dungeon Master (DM) and 3-5 players. To summarize it as basically as possible:
- The DM describes a situation
- The players describe what they want their characters to do
- Dice are rolled if skill or luck is required to accomplish the task
- The DM describes whether they succeed or fail, and happens as a result
Wizard š£ļøš£ļøš£ļø
Then you probably don't want a shield.
If you wear armor that you lack proficiency with, you have disadvantage on any ability check, saving throw, or attack roll that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can't cast spells.

The Shield spell though...

Hi all, i'm starting in the world of D&D soon. Found a local group, with an experienced player as a first time DM. All players will be first timers. I'm super excited. Now i have two questions:
- How much should i colaborate with DM while creating a character?
- Can i ask for help here to finetune my starting char?
-
You should work with your DM as much as possible. D&D is a game about collaborative story telling, so the more your character fits into and feels like a real part of the DM's world, the more satisfying that story will be
-
We're more than happy to help with your character, but this is not the proper channel for getting specific advice on that. We have 2 channels dedicated to just that. #character-discussion for more general help, and #optimization for help with numbers, math, and strategies.
I am brand new to DnD I donāt exactly understand what the beyond dnd app is for. Is it mostly used for virtual dice rolling and character tracking?
As well as quick access to digital rulebooks, and a few other things, yes.
Mostly, yes
You still have to pay for the books though
Its a tool for keeping track of things. You don't "play" D&D on D&D Beyond
But if you know someone who has the books, they can share them with you
So is there a location/ app for virtual campaigns?
Your DM will determine what platform(s) you'll be using to play online. It's nothing you need to worry about just yet
Got it
D&D is played in the imagination. The only thing you really need to play is a way to communicate with other people. Discord is very popular for this, but any way to send messages or talk to people will work. Everything else is just a tool for making that easier
True. The websites are cool for visualization, but ultimately you donāt need them.
Thank you very much! Will talk with DM as much as possible, and call for help in the other threads when needed.
Hello, a friend of mine told me about DND and I wanted to try by myself, but I donāt know anything. Could someone help me and explain everything to me because I literally know nothing :)

So itās like Baldurs gate 3, but with other people and your own character, did I get it right?
Yeah kinda. Baldur's Gate 3 was based on this game. They made a few changes to the rules, to make it better fit a video game, but it still about 80-90% the same
Oh ok thanks!

is there a place to play dnd online?
To find groups, to play on a virtual table top, or something else entirely?
like find a group i guess im new to this so idk that much
there are many places to play dnd online. Discord servers are pretty common, and recruitment happens on different sites/places.
roll20 is a big site for finding games, but you can also check out /lfg on reddit or look in #find-a-game
My friend set me up with my group. Play by post using DDB, Discord and tableplop for maps.
Nice!
Have you also looked at Avrae?

You can have it send your D&D Beyond dice rolls over to Discord.

hi to all, im new to D&D and i really would like to play with someone but don't know anyone who plays..is there someone who is organizing a campaign on roll20?

What class would be a good idea to pick if we're 2 in a campaign and the other person is playing a non healing druid?
All druids have access to healing spells, so what do you mean
To answer your question though, any class! DnD doesn't require dedicated healing classes, but a two-person party already requires a lot of leg work on the DM to rebalance for fewer players. It'll require a little more rebalancing after that in order to facilitate no support characters.

post has resources for learning how to be a DM
Alr Iāll check it out when I get home cuz the Wi-Fi here is bad
Sounds good. Once you get a chance to read through some of the resources, let us know if you have any specific questions. We're more than happy to help
I have a list of battles I want my players to go through for the plot, there will be other events and roleplay between them
- Undead man and 6 undead men
- Goblins in Sci Fi Robot Rovers
- High Wizard performing spell to collide universes (under someoneās control)
Say I have an undead creature that exudes a poisonous gas in a 5 feet radius of the creature, what type of damage would that be?
Would it be radiant?
Poison is a damage type
It's also usually recommended for new DMs to use preexisting monster stat blocks, rather than risk accidentally creating imbalanced ones on their own. Thankfully, the preexisting stat blocks tell you exactly what kind of damage each of their abilities does
Any race can be a Draconic Lineage sorcerer!
I know
I mean like assuming that I play an elf with a draconic lineage does that mean that one of my parents is a dragonborn?
No - it just means someone, somewhere recieved some magic from some draconic source
Not necessarily, but it could be if your DM thinks it makes sense.
Oh ok
It could mean your mom was a dragon, it could mean your grandparents received a Draconic blessing, and/or it could mean that you underwent some strange ritual that backfired! There's plenty of ways you could have become infused with Draconic energy.
How would someone marry a dragon
Perhaps that would be a story to explore in your D&D game
There are no game rule mechanics if that's what you're asking.
Oh ok
Yeah that's what I was trying to ask
I kind of want to make my own settings
A much more low fantasy one
I even wrote a few short stories there
Around northern Italy, Scotland and now Poland
I'd suggest trying out the game with at least the free basic rules before adding in homebrew (homebrew is rules or things you or the community create but are not official - as in it doesn't come from D&D).
I'd also recommend not directly tying your games to real world places and events. Inspired by is fine, but diretly trying ro recreate real world stuff is likely going to not be all that fun.
This is moving out of territory of this channel, which is to help new players to D&D, and more into #dm-world-building
Oh ok
I'll move there for those questions
Also do you need to keep track of your arrows
I recommend you first learn the game and how it works before diving into creating your own homebrew world, which can be a long and difficult task.
That's up to the DM.
Got it
I've certainly never required any of my players to keep track of arrows, but I'm sure there are DMs out there who do!
Can my spells at lower levels get stronger
The basic rules explain how you can upcast lower level spells
Also cantrip spells get better as you reach certain levels
Cantrips increase their damage as the character levels, some levelled spells can be upcast and typically the description states what the upcast effect is for higher slots
I mean like that
Can a magic missile at level 1 get stronger without casting it at level 2
no*
*Sometimes, some classes or or subclass might have features that can increase the strength of your spells
Like the evocation wizard's level 10 feature, for example:
Empowered Evocation
Beginning at 10th level, you can add your Intelligence modifier to one damage roll of any wizard evocation spell you cast.
Only if the spell's spell description says you can upcast it by using a higher level spell slot.
But features like Empowered Evocation are the exception. There is no general rule for increasing the strength of a spell, except through upcasting them, and only if the spell says it gets stronger when upcast
Read the spell's spell description on what it can (or cannot) do.
That is determined by what class you are playing. It is shown in the class table at the beginning of each class's description
Here is a link to the wizard's class table, as an example:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/wizard#TheWizardTable
So for example, using this table you can see that a level 1 wizard has two 1st level spell slots, and a level 5 wizard has four 1st level spell slots, three 2nd level spell slots, and two 3rd level spell slots
It doesn't show 10 level spells
characters can reach level 20.. Magic itself, depending on what kind of caster you are, stop at spells marked Level 9 (for various lore reasons, 9th is the highest folks can cast). Spell levels and character levels are two different things.
9 is just the number the game designers chose
Because it's a carry over from 1st Edition.
But that's beyond the scope of this channel...
Are drow elves
yes
Yes.

Yo what commands do I use

Have you looked at the free basic rules
Where can i find those ?
This post here
tyy!!
Can a lich take necrotic damage?
Yes, but it's resistant to necrotic damage (takes half damage).
If you read its monster statblock it would say its vulnerabilities, resistances, and/or immunities.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16943-lich
are sorcerers able to use verbal, somatic and material spells all together ?
Many spells use all three and yes sorcerer's have spells that require them.
For instance the iconic fireball spell: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/fireball
Has verbal, somatic, and material components required to be able to cast.
Read the individual spell's description to see which component (verbal, somatic, and/or material) are required to cast it.
If a spell has multiple components, you have to satisfy all of them to cast that spell.
whats a saving throw
Generally it's a roll of a D20 with an added modifier from the stat your rolling for.
To succeed on a saving throw you have to meet a DC or difficulty class determined by the GM
thanks!!
A saving throw is a roll to resist or avoid a harmful effect
Such as a trap, which may call for a dexterity saving throw
Theyāre basically the inverse of attack rolls
what about ability checks ?
The targeted performs the saving throw, rather than the targeter performing the attack roll
Ability checks are a generic roll to see how good you are with a certain ability score
Often ability checks will also have skills tied to them
Like a charisma (persuasion) check
A regular charisma check would be d20+charisma modifier
A persuasion check, however, would be d20+charisma modifier+proficiency bonus (if youāre proficient in persuasion)
Have you read the basic rules?
Can you give an example of something youāre confused about?
Read at your own pace. You can watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorial videos.
Any time you need to determine whether your character succeeds or fails, you roll a d20. Thereās three types of d20 rolls:
- Ability checks when you attempt to perform a task.
- Attack rolls when you try to damage a target.
- Saving throws when you try to avoid some harmful effect.
For all three, you roll the d20, add any applicable bonuses or penalties, then compare it to a target number.
If your total equals or exceeds the target number, you succeed.
Anything less and you fail.
So they all work basically the same way, and together, those d20 rolls are basically the core mechanic of the game.
But other game rules may give you specific bonuses or penalties depending on the type of d20 roll youāre making.
Are ākitsā what subclasses used to be called?
How do you know the target number?
For ability scores and saving throws, that number is the Difficulty Class (DC).
Usually whatever rule says to make one of those rolls will specify the DC.
But sometimes the DM will have to decide it for themselves.
As a rough guideline, DC 10 is an easy task, 15 is medium, and 20 is hard.
Oh okay! Tysm!
Then for attack rolls, you compare it to the targetās Armor Class (AC).
Kits are what 2e called what is essentially subclasses or variant classes.
Is the first and second Baldurs gate based on 2e?
Yep. Somewhat adjusted of course. Just like BG3 adjusts the 5e rules
If curious about how older editions worked #dnd-elder-editions is a good channel to start in. This channel focuses more on introductions to 5e.
Hello, I'm gonna be honest I'm new to DND. However I do want to learn about it. I was reading on DND beyond, and had a question.
Again, new to everything so kinda dumb, but it seems there's only a certain amount of choices for race and other such things. Are those the only ones you can choose or are you able to make one of your own? Either is fine just a tad curious.
People can and do make their own, but itās something youād need to work out with your DM.
Or sometimes you can take an existing race and just change the way itās described, without changing the way it works.
certain amount like on dndb when making a character?
Thereās also a lot more official races than what Iām betting youāve seen so far.
Thereās like 70-something, I think.
Oh alright, thank you.
And another question, one I've kinda been wondering overall.
How do you decide the stats for the players? Is it something that comes with whom you choose or do you do it yourself. If so, when do you know if it's too weak or too overpowered?
Oh, I've only seen about nnnine I think
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you donāt have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Mhm, I went on DND beyond and it was nine choices I think.
Yeah, thatās whatās available in the free Basic Rules.
But thereās lot of other books that expand the available character options.
you have to buy all the extra books that unlock more or join a campaign where someone else did and they share the content
Not just races, but subclasses, spells, feats, magic itemsā¦
Do Kobolds count as animals
What is the name of the summoning spell that decreases your maximum hit points by a bit? I know I'm being super vague but that's all I remember and I can't find it online.
Create Magen?
Thx!

Ok
So, I was going to play a DnD game, and sent in a "looking for dm" message
After I got in contact with the dm, they just, didn't respond back to my messages
Roll dice, your emotions depend on the outcome
And now I can't post for another 5 days, so I'm asking can I somehow bypass this? The DnD game should be over by now I believe and I still haven't gotten a message, inv, or etc
No but you can look for games posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community
Oh ok
Also putting together a D&D game takes time, effort, and scheduling
Don't expect a game in 15 minutes. More like hours, weeks, maybe months.
Alr, I was just a bit surprised when I didn't get any notification or message lol
What channel is the live chat?
We do not have voice chat here
Live as in active and not slowmode sorry I'm new to discord
We don't actually play D&D games on this server either
So I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for? You can look at #channel-guide to see if there's a particular topic of D&D that you want to chat with folks about.
Just figured there would be a place to ask questions and talk to others and such
That's pretty much every channel, just varying by topic
Yep - this channel is specifically for new to D&D folks to ask questions and learn about the core rules and basic game mechanics of D&D.
I'm familiar with DND since like the third edition but i am "old" and dunno what's up with discord
Then I suggest taking a look at #channel-guide, find a channel for a topic of D&D that you'd like to chat with others about, and then ask a topical question or respond to others.
We have #dnd-elder-editions if you want to chat older editions of D&D as well.
Is there a tavern?
There isn't. If you want to create a community you should have a "tavern"
Not really - we do have #non-dnd-topics for everything not-D&D (server rules still apply and things in that channel are generally expected to not be about D&D).
Well the idea of a "tavern" is where different people go to communicate and learn from each other and perhaps form parties. So it isn't exactly off topic. But I understand.
I am literally nobody sorry for being loud or something
Like i said i dont really understand discord
No you're fine. You may find other servers have channels more conducive to a tavern feel - you can take a look at #looking-for-community for those.
Oh, that's really cool. Thanks.
I cant seem to find a camp that fits my thing anyone need a player?
Please use the Looking For Game channels to find a game - soliciting or posting for games anywhere else is off-topic and will be moderated.
Read #find-a-game (carefully) for information and instructions on how to use our LFG channels
can we play d&d online its my first time and i wanna understand

Hello, I'm new to TTRPGs in general and just recently played Peril in Pinebrook which introduced me to the game as a whole (been wanting to play for a while but other games were either cancelled or never went anywhere), I'd love to be able to join more one shots and make a proper character if anybody would be able to help with at least the latter

those are linked in the pinned messages of this channel
How do people play online dnd?
VTTs (Virtual table tops) are a common way, though some also just play on discord with a dice rolling bot

Do I need a grid map for DND?
no, you can do theatre of the mind
However you can just use a piece of grid paper as a map
By the way, if Iām an elf sorcerer, do I still have a draconic bloodline
hi i new here
You can choose your sorcerous origin regardless of your race, so yeah š
draconic bloodline is one sorcerer subclass option, so if you choose it, then yes, you still do
Hello
Hello. I've never played any ttrpg's and mainly got interested with the promise of being able to play in a cyberpunk theme world. Could anyone point a hand to where and how I could get into such a game? Also would dnd be the right choice instead of systems like cyberpunk red?
dnd is not a good option for cyberpunk settings
a dedicated system like cyberpunk red will do much better
I see, thank you!
I just learned how to play the game and I have a character. Where can I join a beginner campaign?
You can join a beginner campaign in #looking-for-players most campaigns there are beginner friendly.
Hello, just finished creating a character not to long ago and pretty interested in playing D&D ever since my teacher in class started talking about it. Where can I join a game and how long do games usually last as I have work on some days.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
The duration of games can vary a lot. There are one-shots (I wouldn't reccommend to beginners though), that only take on session. The most used format probably are campaigns, that last multiple sessions (and last until your DM decides you have finished the story or you're getting bored and start a new campaign).
is there any spells that makes someone unable to speak ?
If you don't have time regularly though you could have a look into Adventurers League.
Not so much can't speak as no sound is heard - see the spell Silence
thank you!
And here's that spell: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/silence
Also, welcome to the server!

how do i know what type of spell it is ? (verbal, somatic...)
m is material. If it has a gold cost you need that thing specifically, otherwise an item referred to as a spellcasting focus or component pouch can be used in its place.
Yep - a spell lists what level it is, what it's casting time is, what range and/or area it effects, what components it uses (see what florishingneo noted above), the duration of the spell (how long the spell lasts), what school the spell comes from (some classes may have additional bonuses/effects when casting spells of certain schools), whether there is an attack roll or saving throw required, and the type of damage/effect the spell may have. Then below that there is a text description that describes what the spell does.
And note, that's all a spell does.
Any additional way you'd want to use it that would deviate would be entirely up to the dm whether it was possible, as you'd be beyond what the defined parameters of the spell does at that point.
Thank you guys!!
Whats the usual advancement type ? Im trying to make a new character on dnd beyond
depends on your dm
You can change it easily though. If you don't know what your DM will do choose XP, as it allows you to have way more control.
are most settings this way ?
A lot of DMs use Milestone, but if you choose XP it can be technically used as Milestone.
The dm is the one guiding the game, and setting the overall tone for the campaign. They, in effect, call the shots for how things work in a given game.
am i able to change my character anytime ?
As in, does dnd beyond let you?
yes
Yes, it does
thanks!

Hey guys I'm new to dnd and would like to ask how the combat system works for a fighter class human like me. Can I cast spells?
I m a sorcerer so I just burn things:)
Sounds cool lol
Poor wildlife
Only if you pick the fighter subclass that let's you cast spells. Or get a spell option from something else, like an item
Your class abilities, etc will tell you what you can do
O ok ty
What is the meaning of 1d10, 3d5, etc ?
If you want specifics on how combat works, the basic rules has a chapter dedicated to combat.
The Handbooker Helper series also has a short video about as well.
Both in the bot post above.
When the game refers to rolling XdY,
X = the number of die
Y = the die type based on the number of faces
Ty
Lf for a game
Apparently beholders are xenophobic according to the monster manual lmao
Unless you have a question this may be better for #dnd-lore or #dnd-discussion
Hey I've just found this Discord Server after months of interest in DnD. I'd like to see if it's possible to learn whatever is necessary (I have read up on the DnD *Beyond website so I have a fairly general understanding of Classes and Races) and I would like to make sure I know how to build my very first character, I already have ideas in place for my first ever character and would appreciate a guiding hand.
And of course, I want to know what is required to, well, play my first campaign with others.
Dndbeyond has a character maker, but all you really need is a sheet, and pick a class, race and background and start filling in. Following the steps in the basic rules can really help, and you can ask here if you get stuck on something.
Making a PC is soemthing you can do to practice even when you don't have a game yet, but it is best to make a new PC for a new game with the DM and group (especially as the DM needs to tell you any houserules and how to make stats).
After that it's finding a game and deciding how you want to play- online or in person.
(And if you want to DM or not)
Ah. So it seems that, for the most part, it may depend on the group party I find to play with, as well as the DM, so character creation may come after the fact?
My primarily goal is to learn as much as I can, so I am not strict on whatever first character I have to use (though I do have preferences). I wish to first have a thorough enough understanding of the game and its basics and most common intricacies, before I insert my own OC as a primary character from then on, as a more experienced player in future.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
So did I do sumn wrong,my party was jailed and I teleported out and set the prison on fire, all the guards died and my friends survived, monsters got attracted to the fire and I set them on fire causing a forest fire,we escaped tho so I did nothing wrong
Please help me
What's there to help? You have consequences to your actions.
Talk to your DM and the other players.
They said I did,I'm just tryna find an excuse to start another š„š„š„
Again, you will have consequences to your actions. If you are creating issues to the other players then don't be surprised if the DM asks you to leave.
So quick stupid question, In the context of a bunch of Fools wishing to start D&D for the sake of curiosity and Messing around, How important is learning the rules for that? Because we basically know the bare minimum of (Haha dice funni number)
Honestly the answer is both 'Knowing the rules really helps' and 'You don't really need to know the rules'.
I have, though I might be missing parts here and there, but I hope to fill all gaps as is required through play.
Yeah We were mostly planning to wing it on "F around and find out"
Naturally, if I have the necessary tools to do it all.
When starting off, knowing at least some basic rules for combat and character creation will really help keep things balanced and prevent it becoming 'Calvin ball'.
But at the same time, you can be pretty intuitive with it, play as you feel is right and when something feels off, look up the rule for it.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Check the links above.
Will give it a look, Pretty much all we're missing is a GM/DM that's willing to deal with our BS lol
Generally the basics are 'roll a d20 + stat modifier+ bonus' to see how well you do at anything- an attack, a check, a save, so on. Just knowing that lets you improv fairly well. But the more you know the rules the less you're likely to run into 'this is obviously not working and feels bad' territory.
One of you could always DM
I recommend one of you volunteer to be the DM if you want to play as a group.
I'm decent enough with fantasy plots, But terrible at describing and "Reading it" out in a fitting way
Start with a prewritten adventure.
I'll check the "introductory demo", the "Basic Rules" and the "Handkeeper Helper" links.
I am unsure about character creation, because it seems to also be dependent on the party I am joining up with, so I will probably just wing it when I get around to that, after I find a party to play with.
I hope this sounds reasonable?
If you agree, I'd like to ping you here again, once I am done. If you object, please let me know what my next course of action can be after I finish reading the aforementioned 3 sections.
Read the first four chapters in the Basic Rules on character creation.
Watch the "Handbooker Helper" tutorials.
Any recommendations? Again we kinda just mess around
Plus we're only 3 so we need one more anyways lol
@cobalt frigate are u a bit?
Please don't ping me
Srry
Iād recommend starting with a few loose ideas for characters to practice.
Then when you get together with your group, one of those might end up being a good fit, and you can work together to add any finishing details.
Any recommendations for a good way to play online? Site or app or whatever works We're all kinda like- across the world lol
Doesn't DM privilege require a far deeper understanding of the game, as well as a certain talent for creativity, improvisation, world-building, and how to advance campaigns throughout multiple play sessions (if this is applicable)?
Sorry, I've been watching a lot of vids regarding DnD over a number of weeks, and have been reading up a bunch. So I am aware of some stuff, as an outside observer who has never played a game before but has heard several stories of games, incidents, special circumstances and such.
DMs do need to know more about the rules but they don't have to be experts. You can always refer to the books during game for clarity. For storytelling and advancement, it's good to start with a prewritten module to help learn about pacing and tempo.
You can DM completely new. There are prewritten adventures that can help out, and when starting with a group of newbies, you can all help each other remember rules.
There is some extra work for DMing, depending on how you play. If you use maps or such, then you'll need to set those up for example. But that can be enjoyable too and doesn't require that much experience.
You don't need to memorize everything. I don't and I've been playing for 40+ years. The rule books are there for a reason ā to be referenced.
Alright. Thankfully, I've read the first 3 chapters before I found this Discord Server. So I only need the 4th, and the tutorials.
I'll ping you when I am finished and need more guidance in that case. Again, please let me know if you'd prefer I ping someone else.
No, please don't ping me.
Understood. Please refer me to someone else if possible.
Otherwise, I will simply post here as I have before.
You don't need to directly reply back to me as well. I'm in this conversation.
I like to be thorough.
Nevertheless, I understand.
I am not a private tutor. Just ask for help in this channel and someone will help you.
Alright. Thank you for the guide.
Problem with any of us becoming DMs is like- Imagine giving a book to a Rat, A salamander and a chicken that thinks it can fly
Remember you can reply without pinging
DMing just takes practice and being comfortable with making mistakes
Oh I'm not talking about that, Mostly is that two out of three of us are ADHD in a physical form and the third can't be creative on the spot to save his life
You can't get better at DMing if you don't try and learn from your failures.
I have ADD and I DM virtually with four monitors. You learn to focus as a DM.
So what is the absolute minimum number of Players (+ DM) that can be considered a full party for a DnD game?
I would recommend three to five players.
Minimum would be one DM and one player but usually it's around 4 - 5 players
Or 3 to 5. Honestly, it's what's most comfortable
My friend who introduced me to DnD, maybe 3 or so years back, has ADHD and he's always wanted to DM for me for whenever I'd actually take initiative to try it for myself.
Alright, so 2 folks saying 3~5. Thank you both.
I shall continue reading.
Ok so I've discussed it and they said it's ok as long as I don't repeat it
Remember that the game is suppose to be fun for everyone, not just you. If you intentionally make the game less fun for the other players and the DM, then expect to be kicked.
hey im very new and have no idea on how to get started,
how do play online? is there software i need to buy?
How to find a group of people who want to play?
are you limited to one ?
Yes, you can only have one sub-class per class.
depressing
any place where i can understand how to navigate dnd?

nice ty
A subclass, like Arcane Traditions, is basically just your specialization within that class.
Whichever one you choose gives you a number of unique abilities.
This article covers some of the more popular ways to play online:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
can anyone explain each wizard skill ?
Can I be a skeleton?
Not an official playable race. The closest is the reborn from Van Richton's. The DM has final say what's allowed in their campaign.
Those are all explained here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#UsingEachAbility
Ok thx
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

DnDBeyond is a not a place to play D&D - it's a digital toolset to help play D&D
#find-a-game is a place to read the info and instructions to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels work here.
(also in case it's missed - orange names are moderators)
Oh
Ok so I made it to the #looking-for-players channel, but how do I join a game?
Iām sorry I donāt know what Iām doing
Did you read the instructions in #find-a-game? Like all of them. Even in the threads inside that channel.
(and no worries - we'll get you there eventually)
So you can look for folks posting games in #looking-for-players and direct message the poset or use the attached thread to the post to notify them that you are interested in their game.
Or in #looking-for-community you can join other D&D servers that may have games available for you to join.
Oh ok I think I know what Iām doing now thanks a lot sorry for the hassle
No worries!
And welcome to the server and we hope you can find a great group to play D&D with and have tons of fun!
The bot command starts with /looking-for then select the option for what kind of post you want to create in the LFG channels.
This place is dead lol
So if Iām creating a character and letās say I need to start at level 3 do I go ahead and add all the spells I can or do I have to get them in the campaign
I am also wondering this as Iām reading through D&D beyond
Your DM will tell you if there are any restrictions
I think you have a few cantrip slots depending on your class, but otherwise you will have to level up to learn new spells
Iām making a character and I donāt know how to fill out most of it. Can anyone help me?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
?no

Ok but how do I fill out the strength, constitution, intelligence, and wisdom thing? And the weapons?
if i'm thinking about becoming a DM where should I start? I'm not really sure but I want to start a campainge
how do I fill out the strength, constitution, intelligence, and wisdom thing? And the weapons?
Thereās a few ways to do it, described above. Which you should use is a question to ask your DM.
Have you picked a race, class, and background already?
A short pre-written adventure is probably the easiest way to start.
Thereās been a few different starter sets over the years, specifically designed for newcomers.
Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is the current one.
alright thank you
His name is Tarn, he is a warforged and is a mercenary he was forged in a strange tower and brought to life using magic by a mysterious Sorcerer. He was created to steal from the nearby town but he eventually killed his creator and ran off now he is a thief/assassin for hire he will take any job for the right price
Nice! So a rogue, then, or some other class?
hi! at my school we recently got a dnd club. last year i was interested in playing but had no one to play with but i started making a character. because of the new club at school, which i joined, i remade my character, got the players handbook, got a set of dice, and made my character on hero forge!
Dude this is so hard
my character is a variant human(damaran), and hes a rogue who's background is a criminal (specifically a pickpocket), hes named after me but the german version of my first name, and his last name means foggy night(correct me if im wrong pls, im currently learning german so im not fluent), his name is wilhelm nachtnebel, and hes a chaotic neutral!
what is, if u specify i could look it up in my players handbook
Do all characters need to have my fancy fantasy names
Not really
What if I want to name my character Tom or smth normal
My last character was John Hendal
It's your character. You can name them whatever you want. But the DM and others playing may want soemthing that fits the type of D&D game you're playing.
It can be as normal or eccentric as ya want
I'm gonna name her Bartholomew dikus the 3rd
i dont think they necessarily need to be specifically fantasy, you can have fantasy names but its not a requirement
š
Because I have the humor sense of a 12 year old boy
Real
Sounds like a guy though ngl
and sometimes other ages but im also autistic sooo
How do I fill out the character sheets, Iāve been told what to do but not how to do it
Hello good sir, my name is Bartholomew Dicus the Third and I require your assistance in a civil matter
I was about to ask the same thing
Yall using a normal sheet?

The first chapter of the free basic rules goes through step by step on how to create a character
Well I donāt have a printer and Iām on my phone so
DnDBeyond has a mobile app for character sheets
Ight thx
There's also roll 20, and 5eCompanion
Fight Club 5e also (mobile app for character sheets)
what exactly do i put in features and traits, ive not seen anything that explains what, neither in the book or online
or if it is in the book could someone tell me what page or chapter?
Features & Traits come from various sources - your class, your race, and any feats.
oooooooh that makes so much sense, tysm!!
Should I download all of them or just pick my preference?
I like DnDBeyond's app because if you buy official materials through DnDBeyond you can access and use it there. Also has a nice off-line mode.
Also Fight Club 5e is nice however anything not in the SRD/Free Basic rules you'll have to build yourself (but totally doable).
Both have built in dice rolling too
i personally would download all then see which i like best and uninstall the others
Also a good idea - find what works best for you.
Alright thanks
alright so I made my online character sheet, now what
If you want to get feedback on it, you can go to #character-discussion
If you want to optimize it, you can go to #optimization
If you feel itās ready to be played in a game, you can go to #find-a-game within this server or look for games online/IRL in other communities
Hey Iām kind of new to dnd
I know some things but are still learning new things
Like I donāt think I know enough to homebrew a spell

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
I highly recommend you DON'T bother with homebrewing since you're a new player. Besides your DM will need to approve any homebrew stuff.
Well actually Iāve homebrewed a few times
Homebrewing is something we don't talk about or really encourage in this channel.
This channel is to help new players learn the rules of D&D.
I made a enchanted cloak for my rogue, a fairy race, and a š« for my bard
Okay
To give further context, the reason why homebrew is not recommended for new players is because you need to know how the rules work in order to understand what rules you can bend, break, or replace.
Just like how you wouldn't want change engine parts if you don't know how an engine works.
Is there a way to filter 5e sourcebooks/adventures to only those you own?. Or did wotc format their site to intentionally make you scroll through unowned content
That would be a #ddb-support question and no, there isn't (yet) a way to filter items you own on DnDBeyond - it is something the devs know there is a great desire for and they have said it's something they do want to improve (along with search).
So for dnd beyond do you have the pay to be a dm
No. You can play D&D with just the free basic rules.
Buying books just unlocks more game options like subclasses, races, magic items, spells, feats, and additional rules you can use in your games
The subscription tiers do allow you to created unlimited characters and combat encounters.
Along with adding publicly shared homebrew content and enabling content sharing with other players.
Though this also isn't needed to be a DM.
DMs tend to be the ones who spend money on books. This has been a thing for decades.
Crys in broke DM
Hi, I'm semi new to DnD. I think I have most of it down, but I always have trouble remembering what dice go with what roll. Like a perception check, or a damage check.
All ability checks, attack rolls, and saves are rolled with d20s. Damage rolls are weapon/spell dependent
Ooh, alright. Thank you! That was the only thing still tripping me up
hi iām quest i am new to DnD and i want to be able to do online DnD but im not really sure what to do and im down to play any game !!!
You can go to #find-a-game to find groups that play off/online. For more advanced online tools like VTTs (virtual tabletops), sites like Roll20, Owlbear VTT, and Foundry VTT are most commonly used
interesting thank you
?tag new online
what kinds of games should I be looking for as a newcomer?
I would say lower level games that are open to helping beginners, most games are like that though
im currently making the switch from D&D Online to Pen and Paper
I'm new so do I need to have a mic or is it optional?
It depends if the game is in-person or online. If ti's online, it's up to the DM if they use voice chat.
Ok is most games text or voice?
It varies depending on the game. Some use voice, some text and some are in person
Ok
Online is quite common these days, especially during and post pandemic.
I long for the day that I can dust off the dice bag once more

Thank you so much lol . I begged my ex bf forever to teach me how to play ⦠never would. And I have wanted to learn but didnāt know where to start so I appreciate it very much
Ty @smoky adder
Don't let the amount of information overwhelm you, most importantly.
Out of the many pages in player material, you only need as much as your character needs.
Which is represented by the 3-page character sheet, for quick reference.
DND Beyond, books, and the notes you take are there for you too, because memorizing information can only do so much.
Thank you so much @delicate vortex
Hey everyone.
I've always wanted to try actually dnd but i can't buy dnd stuff where i live so my closest experience is the Baldur's Gate 3 game. I know there's a lot of difference between that and dnd 5e and I've tried to learn as much as possible.
Is there a way to play dnd online? Like i want to but i literally can not buy any dnd stuff like books, miniatures or maps or anything. Can anyone help me learn more and if there is a way to play online can someone dm me and invite me to their campaign? It would be my first time actually playing dnd instead of a video game variant like Baldur's Gate
You can play with just the free basic rules.

Hello!! I am new to DND. I'd just like to ask whether there is a channel where I can watch DND as a newbie but not yet participate? Thanks in advance!
If you want to see how D&D is played over video thereās plenty of streams across twitch, YouTube, etc.
Just keep in mind some of the most popular D&D shows are often run by professional writers, actors, comedians, etc that are likely not super representative of the average table
(and such D&D streams are entertainment first rather than "how to play D&D")
Still useful but know what they're actually doing.
If you want to look over the basic rules (linked in this channels pins), on YouTube the show Critical Role has made a series of videos called Handbooker Helper that acts as a nice audiovisual supplement to character creation
Would it be possible for newcomers to have an intro game dedicated to beginners? I see at least two folks that have joined today, and who also want to learn just like I want to.
Thereās a good article here that covers some of the more popular ways to play online:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Thank you!
What is a good class to start with if you're still adjusting to the game?
The martial classes like fighter, barbarian, or rogue tend to be the simpler ones.
Any class with spellcasting requires you to learn more.
But none of it is unknowable.
Iād say just go with whatever most interests you. Youāll be more invested if youāre telling the story you want to tell.
A human champion fighter is the simplest option in the game, but not everyone wants to tell the story of a human champion fighter.
hey so, I kinda am starting to want to begin playing DND after a long time thinking and being scared to join this community lol. I do wanna ask for advice as I've been rejected from Redditor's posts for LFG like 6 times. But does anyone have any advice to find games that accept BRAND new people? Like I have 0% experience with the tabletop game, I do have made a OC tho!
So you have multiple options outside of reddit.
You could try finding a game here in #find-a-game, you could try roll20's LFG function and you could try Startplaying if you don't mind paying
I have no idea about roll20's but I can see in #find-a-game , do I click for communities?
Or the looking-for-players?
Hello!
I kind of want to try to learn dnd as a whole. it seems really fun. but I dont know where to start nor join one.
any guides?
also how wild csn the characters be?
First, read the main page. Then you can either look at what people posted in looking for players, or make a post yourself in looking for DM.
Alright :)
Well, what was said before applies to you too. But if you want to learn DnD, being brand new, you can't go wrong just reading the Player's Handbook, or even just the basic rules.
When it comes to how wild the characters can be... Well, you have to follow the rules of character creation
oo alright!
is there a link? or is it the same one as the one above?
oo so it depends on the dm?
Not just the DM, but the whole group.
Well, depends. Do you want to buy the player's handbook, or just read the basic rules? They're available for free here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
If everyone else wants to play something like Lord of the Rings but one person comes in with Monty Python and the Holy Grail energy, itās probably not gonna work.
It's a matter of how the group wants the campaign to be. It really depends on a lot of factors
And vice versa
lmao
here at dnd beyond character creation
completely new but i get the gist (though, I can't take this lots of information)
what are these sources option thingies
D&D is a game of group storytelling, so itās important to make sure everyoneās telling the same story.
And even in serious campaigns. If you have one person who wants Lord of the Rings, another who wants A Song of Ice and Fire, you will get into a lot of dissonance.
You should ask your DM which of those to use. Essentially they add different rule sets to the available options for your character.
If you donāt have a DM yet, Iād recommend leaving that whole first page at the default settings.
I just went straight to character creation after signing up in dnd beyond
yay
okay how bout picking a class?
what do classes like artificer do?
k
Artificers are basically magical inventors.
This article gives a quick overview of the different classes:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1047-d-d-101-a-quick-breakdown-of-classes-in-dungeons
Artificers are semi-spellcasters. Their mechanics are all about magical items and stuff and... Well, honestly, they're probably not the simplest class for a beginner.
lol what is a good beginner class?
something that uses a lot of talking so i can practice improvising a bit more
Bard.
Any class can talk to people. š
Any class can be social, that's not dependant on the class.
bard?
A character with a high charisma score would help with social interactions.
For me it is the most social class in the entire game, that depends on how you see it.
Since bards use charisma as their spellcasting ability, that makes it any easy fit.
But any class with spellcasting will be more complex than a class without.
The classes that use charisma are the bard, the paladin, the warlock and the sorcerer.
spellcasting?
Non-spellcasting classes are the rogue, the barbarian, the fighter and the monk.
A rogue might be a good non-spellcasting option.
Rogues are cool. B)
None of those are based on charisma, but it's not a problem if you want to make a social character. It depends more on your background and proficiencies anyways
but how is it harder?
how different is it from like saying
"i cast fireball"
if you get my gist
Hey! Is #searching-for-dm, for players who want to find a DM to play under?
Or is it for DMs to find matches to lead
Eyo, me lol
Yes Looking For Dm is for folks looking to find a group or game to join
Amazing!
Well it's harder because you have to manage the rules for all your different spells, and your spell slots (how many spells you are able to cast before needing to rest).
ooo
You cast fireball, sure. But then, you have to decide where the center of the fireball will be, look at the radius of the explosion, how many creatures are in the area, have them roll their dexterity save to see if they can take less damage...
yeah that sounds so much easier as opposed to just hitting your opponents in the face lol
is dnd a magic dominated game or is it balanced?
More or less balanced, but it's complicated.
complicated?
At the end of the day, spellcasting classes can do stuff martial classes can't do so...
oh true
thanks for the info, ill be reading the guide now!

hey, my friend and I have never played DND before and are looking to play it online with a group, what software/apps would we want to have to play online?
All you need is a way to communicate with each other. Could run a game via phone call if you wanted.
I suggest taking a look at various tools out there and see what will work well for you and your group and technology limits
I run a hybrid in-person/online game using Discord.
We also use DnDBeyond and Avrae (Discord bot)
DnDBeyond helps with the character sheets and rules.
Avrae for dice rolling and quick rules lookups.
Then Discord for tying it all together and providing a way for our online players to participate.
Some folks use Virtual Tabletops like Roll20, FoundryVTT, Fantasy Grounds, or Owlbear.rodeo to provide maps and tokens
Yeah, I had an interest in DND and with the coming summer vacation I thought it might be the time to get into it but I donāt know where to start can anyone suggest me a yt video or something similar that I can watch or listen to that can teach me the basics of DND for someone that has 0 knowledge for the game

Clerics use Wisdom for their primary spellcasting attribute
thanks
How does a paladin whose backstory is that they lost their faith in their patron diety work?
Really depends on the world/setting you're in and/or what your DM decides how things work in their game. But paladins don't have to worship a god - their power comes from their devotion to their oath.
Or how about an exiled paladin, or more accurately a paladin who abandoned their faith after a traumatic incident during a failed crusade
There is the oathbreaker paladin subclass but that is very much up to whether the DM allows it.
a Paladin doesnt have to follow a deity. so the more important question is, did they abandon their Oath or its tenets?
That subclass is found in the Dungeon Master's Guidebook (https://www.dndbeyond.com/subclasses/oathbreaker)
and a paladin who loses their conviction in their oath, maybe they just swear a different oath that fits better for their new outlook
Soo are they like limited to what spells they can use like they canāt use a certain spell because they donāt have faith or their abilities are weakened in effectiveness?
Mechanically there is no impact unless you switch to a different oath (or use the Oathbreaker subclass).
A paladin mechanically is a paladin regardless of what their backstory is.
Iām trying to make a paladin character that broke their oath by abandoning a past encounter and thus are limited in the use of their skill which locks their skills even if they already have the requirement to use it and have to āatoneā for it by doing certain missions to unlock it, can I do that? And if so how can I make them balanced for the game?
if your Paladin fails their Oath during a game, the DM might handle it in different ways
a) require the paladin to do some task to regain their Oath
b)switch to a different class like fighter until the Oath is renewed or another is sworn
c) if the player was doing very evil stuff, they might change the class to Oathbreaker
Ahh I see thanks
if this stuff happened during you backstory, then your Oath would be whatever the final outcome of those scenarios was
Hmm ok
this is all very DM dependant, and its best to work closely with your DM on this
Or you'd have to work with your DM to incorporate the mechanical setbacks and how to alleviate them.
Just be careful that a character concept does not start to become main character syndrome where your paladins atonement takes over an entire tables game.
Also giving yourself restrictions is an interesting move, especially to start a game. Make sure the flavor equals fun
Thanks, very much appreciated
Where do I buy the DND handbook and starter kit? And is there shipping to the Philippines?
Amazon sells it
I live in the Philippines all our online shops donāt seems to have them
But perhaps digital access is suitable enough? Don't know your situation but DnDBeyond sells everything digitally and you can actually buy individual items (like a specific class)
Anything you buy that way gets deducted from the book so if you do decide to buy the full book on DnDBeyond it's reduced by the amount you've already purchased.
Oh ok Iāll check that later
Hi. So I have read up on the Basic Rules, up to Chapter 4, and I have watched all vids on Handbooker Helper (aside from Monster Hearts 2). What is the next step for me?
I was thinking of drawing up my first character already, but I imagine it'd be best if I had a DM or a game. But, well, I'm nervous and would like guidance.
you can make a character for practice, just dont expect them to be played exactly as made in your first game
Alright. Practicing character creation sounds like a good idea. I'm guessing once I'm comfortable with doing so, I can just ask for games?
Iād recommend making a few different practice characters. At least as rough ideas.
Then when you find a game, you can work with the DM to see if any of those are good fit and add any finishing touches.
But you can look for a game whenever you like, though.
Gotcha. I guess it's not necessary to go for anything fancy on a first tryout.
can anyone tell me if this is a good build for a rogue? I have seven total HP, 16 strength with mods, 17 dex with mods, 17 IQ with mods, 10 wisdom and 16 charisma?
my cons is dog though I got seven cons
7 hp š
I got a negative one on my cons
can someone explain how exactly death works?
if it helps it my first campaign and she is having pity on me as im at a ripe 1.4 hp
and we left off in a cave with 2 owlbears
...i think you just might be cooked, my friend
our only healer refuses to heal anyone but her boyfriends in RL so I think im cooked
at 1.4 hp, you arent in what would be considered double owlbear fighting shape
only a lvl 1 dragonborn rogue
According to what I understood through Handbooker Helper's vids,
If you are taken down to 0 HP, you are simply unconscious, and unless an enemy attempts to further attack your lifeless body, you can still be resuscitated through healing spells or through making a Saving Check to determine whether you get back up on 1 HP, or if you are pronounced dead on the ground.
However, if the damage you took greatly exceeds the amount of Hit Points you had left, like, say, you have 14 HP and suffered damage of 30, then you are very very dead.
For the magnificent mansion spell when I make the door is it permanent or can I re use the spell anywhere
poor Grigor Zinsys is not making it
ok yeah nah.
bring that up to them and voice your concern about how they're playing and how its affecting the group
if that doesnt work then contact the dm about it.
But you can be resurrected, reincarnated, revived, or special potions or items seem to exist in-game which can be used to bring you back to life with different variations of said effect.
its a highschool group so it doesnt really matter for a first campaign because ive been looking at a necromancer type build that looks fun
Necromancers are fun, if a little confusing at first
so if I need a new character im going to try and go that route
When you hit 0hp, you need to make a death save on your turn, which is just a d20.
If lower than 10, you fail. If higher, you succeed. A 1 counts as two fails. A 20 means you wake up with 1hp.
Hits dealt to you give one automatic failure.
On three fails, you die.
On three successes you have 0hp but are stable.

I need to buy Tashas cauldron and ive got the money but I forgot my amazon prime login RIP
Oh. I heard the vids mention "stable".
But what does that mean, actually?
like in RL stable condition
What does it mean to be "stable"?
like your not exactly guarenteed to die
@wet galleon thank you
i do have a question
i remember in baldurs gate 3, if you used the help action on someone who was doing saving throws, it brought them up to 1 hp
does 5e have something similar or was that just for game balance
