Thank you!
What does homebrew mean though 😅
Hi, i've never played DnD but i have seen those DnD podcast and it looked pretty fun so i wanted to try it but i dont know how to really start or play
Basically non-official player made stuff, like mods for videogames but for D&D
Since wendigo by itself isnt a race that exists officially, you'd need to either flavor another race, or homebrew it
Ah i see, so since there's no wendigos (wendigoes?) In DND I have to make up stuff for my character?
Check out the pinned messages here in the channel and if you have any specific questions feel free to ask them here.
ight danke
Basically (and your DM needs to approve it)
But the easiest way is to just reflavor existing race that fits what you'd want from a wendigo, so you're using the existing race's mechanics, and just roleplay it as wendigo
Hi everyone!! I am totally new to D&D so other than what I've seen in films and on tv, all I know is it looks like a lot of fun! Any help would be incredibly appreciated, like how to get started, figuring out my player/character (I don't know the correct terminology) etc 😊
Hell yeah he let me cook
Hi! Starting out is actually kinda simple.
The hardest part by far (and the scariest one) is creating your character. Then you look for a session, and start playing!
Don't worry if you don't know everything from the start, I think experience is the best teacher!
Ok, about your character:
The things you really need to figure out are race, class, and backstory. From there, you can easily build from the ground up
Hello. I'm kind of new to DND
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Oh that's really good to know!! Do you have any tips on where to start regarding creating your character? As for sessions, is that something you can find on here etc? 😊
Yeah, for that go to #find-a-game .
For tips: tbh, think of a backstory for your character. Look a little bit into races (my favourite rn is Tiefling for example) and classes, and then choose what you like the most.
Maybe you want to Eldrich Blast your enemies to oblivion, or simply hit them very hard with your sword. It's really up to you
What's the difference between elf races?
If you're playing in the Forgotten Realms a lot otherwise it's just your abilities I can go grab the different abilities if that's what you're asking about
They all have a number of shared abilities because they’re all elves.
And a number of distinct abilities because of their unique subrace.
Hey I'm new and need to learn to play
But all those abilities are described here. Is there a specific ability you had questions about?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/3-elf
To what degree do elves age slower than humans?
Welcome! There’s some handy links here to get you started:
Humans usually only live to about a hundred on average elves can live to like 1,500 years
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
So about a 1:15 ratio?
In dnd around 700 is listed
On average yeah that's the D&D ruling on it some live way longer some live way shorter
Although elves reach physical maturity at about the same age as humans, the elven understanding of adulthood goes beyond physical growth to encompass worldly experience. An elf typically claims adulthood and an adult name around the age of 100 and can live to be 750 years old.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/3-elf#ElfTraits
Maybe I'm thinking of Pathfinder or something then I thought they lived a lot longer than that
whats the best dnd web? can i play on the web without having a dnd dice irl
There several virtual table tops out there that have digital dice for people to use when you play online.
This article covers some of the more popular tools for playing online:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
Hey im new to dnd i'd Like to start can somone teach me the basics

I am new to D&D I have wanted to play all of my life but never could and now I am here and don't know what to do next.
Welcome! There's some good links above that can get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
Do you know where I could get the rulebooks online the cheapest I am currently low on money
The only rulebook you need to start is the basic rules, which are free (linked in that bit above)
Later you can look into the core books such as the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual (Be aware there will be a new release at the end of 2024/start of 2025, so they'll be a little out of date)
Thank you (and sorry I didn't see it) and I want to work up to becoming a DM But I dont know how that works
I would say that you should start by playing a few games yourself to understand how the system works, and then try to run a written adventure. It's also possible to DM without having played before (I did), but it's for the best if you have some player experience.
Look up a free adventure module or the Five Room Dungeon. Get familiar with the rules. Find players. Discuss expectations, tone and content (like "please stick to the adventure and don't run off randomly to the hills," and "try to think heroic" and "PG-13, no sexual content, no harm to children or domestic animals").
Then play!
There is a stack of DMing advice just a search away, but if you want to talk about your ideas come share them in #dm-discussion .
are there like robot lobby's so you can play at any time?
D&D isn't a video game where you can join in at any time.
ok noted
Scheduling when everyone can play is the one of, if not the, greatest obstacles of getting sessions running.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Hello, everyone!
no not yet
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Ok
If you have any questions after reading the basic rules, please feel free to ask!
how do stealth attacks work? like if a stealthy character sneaks up on a sleeping enemy and stabs him what bonuses does that attack give
Stealth check vs Passive Perception check.
Well, there's a difference between stealth and sneak attack.
If you attack with stealth, the creature is Suprised, it won't be able to move or use its actions after that happened
Non-rogues don't get any sneak attack bonuses.
Sneak attack, meanwhile, is a rogue ability.
If you have it, you add a damage dice
ah gotcha
A sleeping creature would have the Unconscious and Incapacited conditions
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Unconscious
An unconscious creature is incapacitated, can't move or speak, and is unaware of its surroundings.
The creature drops whatever it's holding and falls prone.
The creature automatically fails Strength and Dexterity saving throws.
Attack rolls against the creature have advantage.
Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.
An incapacitated creature can't take actions or reactions.
thanks!
Huh
the first enemy in my campaign is a sleeping dude lol
"Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (2d4 + 2) piercing damage" What does '+4 to hit' and the 7 in the damage mean?
also what is a DC 11 saving throw
This is a monster statblock. If you're not a DM, why are bothering with this?
If you're a DM #dm-discussion would be a better place to ask since this channel is to help new players to the game.
In any case, the 7 is the mean average for the 2d4+2 damage (saves you time from rolling). The +4 is the attack bonus to the to hit roll.
+4 to hit means that when you make an attack roll, you add 4 to the total.
my bad
You don't know what DC is? It's Difficulty Class.
is that what you have to roll to pass the check?
Difficulty Class
oh yeah i know difficulty class
I recommend you read the Basic Rules again.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#SavingThrows
yeah i probably should
Ability checks and saving throws are both compared to a DC. If the roll equals or exceeds the DC, they succeed.
So in that case, they'd need to get an 11 or higher.
👍 thanks
You're unlikely to see anything listed as just "DC 11 saving throw", though.
Because it also needs to indicate the type of saving throw.
(STR, DEX, etc.)
Never played dnd but my friends gonna dm a CoC oneshot and she said that its, quote "well its actually very different from regular dnd, like creating a character" and left me with that (shes sweet but a little dense)
Anyone know where I can get more information?
this is more appropriate for #non-dnd-topics but to answer your question, you can download a quick start guide of Call of Cthulhu 7e for free with a quick google search
srry, thanks tho
its fine ill manage googling^^

Does anybody know where to find a dnd party?
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
i would love to join some virual campaigns
I accidentally became a party leader how do I become just a player?
Talk to your group about it.
What said create campaign?
I created my character, and for some reason it said I was party leader
What said it?
The thing that dyno sent it says create your character digitally
So you created a character on D&D Beyond?
Yes
And where exactly did it say you were party leader?
After I clicked create campaign and put a description
Are those the exact words it used?
Ah
If you create a campaign, you'll be considered the DM for that campaign.
Well, no, I’m pretty sure there’s another term for party leader in D&D
Yeah, dungeon master
If you want to join someone else's campaign on D&D Beyond, they'll need to send you an invite link for their campaign.
I just couldn’t find a way to save my character
It should just save automatically.
You can find your characters under Collections > My Characters:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters
You can also bump a character from one campaign to another fairly easily.
Oh my God dude thank you so much that helped me a lot
wait is dnd beyond used to actually play online?
D&D Beyond is just an online tool for character sheets, digital books, and now (in alpha) virtual tabletop (VTT).
so is the VTT just an online version of playing irl
A virtual tabletop is basically a way to show battlemaps to the players online.
how does online play work exactly?
Hey, is anyone looking to start a new campaign? I'm new to DND and trying to find some people who want to start a campaign, I've played like twice at school and that's it
I have 4 characters already made in DND beyond
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Oh ok, thank you!
Weird question, but do most dm pick a character lvl to start the campaign with, or start at lvl 1 and work up. Asking cus my dm likes to start us at lvl 5
It varies from group to group.
If a group consists of new players, it's best to start at level 1 and work your way up to the new abilities you unlock as you level up.
Otherwise you run the risk of getting overwhelmed by the various abilities, how they work, and what you have to keep track of.
While experience groups tend to start at higher levels because they already have a grasp on the basics and can juggle more things without issue.
Starting at 3rd level is also fairly common, because then all the class features are online for any core class and the very early level squishiness is dealt with, while still being close to beginning levels.
Makes sense. Thank you
Starting at lv1 for new player’s is preferred bc there are fewer features to keep track of
Starting at 5 means more decisions
For like, a one session intro adventure.
Is Baldur's Gate 3 a good singleplayer alternative to D&D?
It's a highly rated CRPG
What does CEPG mean?
Computer Role Playing Game
OK, thanks
As opposed to Table Top Role Playing Game (TTRPG)
Can you tell me the basics of dnd
I’m sorta new to dnd but does anyone have a open slot on a more long term group cause I don’t really like the play by post
I know find a game exists but who even checks that

Hi!
So how do pets work? Do I control them? Does the DM control them?
there's no universal "pet" mechanic
there are however multiple different features that can give you a "pet"
Depends on the dm. Also Depends on if you mean "pet", mount, or familiar.
each feature will specify how it works
In this case it's a pet owl that can transform into a staff and back because of some backstory I won't get into rn
That's homebrew territory.
Fair
Just because you write something into your character backstory doesn't mean you'll get it.
Yeah but i already got the DM's approval so it's all good
Question: if a sorcerer is holding a light crossbow (two hands weapon), he can't cast spells with somatic component, right?
Then why ask us?
I dunno how pets are supposed to work
and I was asking for clarification
They only need the two hands to wield (fire) it. One hand to hold it.
That's an item at this point, not a pet. Also, it's homebrew so the only one able to answer this question is your dm.
Aight
Also personally I'd argue it's 50/50 rather than being fully one or the other
up to you and your dm. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
The distinction doesn't really matter - it's a cool thing he gave you.
But only he can define how it'll work.

Thank you I'm brand new to this I have a character sheet and d&d beyond just can't find anyone I could play with
Me and a few friends that have no idea what we’re doing are tryna play, is there like anybody that’s willing to teach us maps we have one laptop and our phones to play
For in person games you can:

The bot post above has resources to help you get started.
Check out the demo, read the few few chapters of the basic rules, try creating a character.
You can also look at my message above to help you find a group or dm.
Though it would be faster if someone in your group tries DM a pre-written adventure that can be completed in a single 2-4 hour session.
Which of the magic classes are best for someone who has no clue what they're doing
Depends how much effort you want to put in to learning it
of the 6 full casters, I would say warlock is the easiest to learn
Definitely not wizard or druid
maybe cleric
bard and sorcerer wouldn't be bad either
How difficult is it to play a wizard
If you want to play a spell caster, I believe Clerics are good because they have access to a variety of spells (Attack, Defensive, Support) .
You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest, which can allow new players to experiment by selecting different spells to try.
@true musk can u be my dm
people generally don't accept random requests to be DMs
dming takes a lot of effort and work
depends how much reading you're willing to do
You get a ton of spells to choose from, and you can choose a ton of them
which means lots of spells to read through
I enjoy reading
K underw
Okay follow up question, which magic class is best for focusing on ranged attacks
are you including ranged spell attacks in that?
Uh, sure
then warlock
none of the full casters will be good with any form of weapons
but if you're including half casters then ranger is good with ranged weapon attacks
You guys are a lot more helpful than Google btw thank you
I don't take DM requests 😅
As PixelatedCat said, DMing something requires time, effort, and resources to setup to ensure it's a fun experience for players.
Though I do have some recommendations:

I have a question that might not have an easy answer, but how roleplay heavy are casual adventurers league games
I reallllllllllly wanna make a Nymph but I have no groups to play with and online don't have nymph as an option
Nymph is not a playable race.
There is no official nymph race.
So iv been reading. Seems like elf is the closest thing .
You could probably select another race and just call it a nymph, though.
Like a firbolg or a genasi.
Flavour is free.
I see there's interest in making a nymph race doh
It varies from person to person.
Though I should point out that there are some Adventurers League adventure modules that are designed to be very roleplay heavy.
You'll find modules that will lean to each to each of the three pillars: Roleplay, Exploration, and Combat.
And others that provide a balance of all three.
For more info ask in #adventurers-league
Remember that your DM has final say on which playable races are allowed in their campaign setting.
Also, I haven’t met the dm yet. This is a game that’s being held at a comic store
I don't have a DM will have to find one lol
Hi. I'm new to this server.
Welcome!
Are you concerned it might be a lot to do among strangers, or are you looking forward to it?
I’m actually looking forward to the roleplay, maybe a little nervous to do it with people I’ve never met, but mostly excited
The roleplaying part of the game is what I’m most interested in honestly
It's easier with strangers then it is with people you knw
Welcome!

Yeah sure show it! I mean I'm not exactly experienced but I know the basic basics at least.
did you make the character sheet physically or digitally
Like I'm brand new to the game like I made my account a couple minutes ago
so you made it using dnd beyond?
you can have a look in our #find-a-game channel for groups to join
If you make a character on dnd beyond you'll be to share it by providing the link to the character sheet.
It needs to be set to public though.
How
For example like this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/57717913/O7nFUm
you can set it to public by clicking manage on the top left of the sheet, then settings, then scroll dow and set to public
#ddb-support Can help walk you through it.
I highly recommend you read the free Basic Rules. Your wizard shouldn't have a 30 Str, 30 Dex, and 9 Int.
Those are some very high ability scores. 😅
I'm new
Click each of those scores and delete the numbers in “Other Modifier” and “Override Score”.
So I don't know what I'm doing so if I'm making y'all mad I'm sorry I don't know what I'm doing
Did your DM tell you to start at level 7?
Characters typically start at level 1 unless the DM says otherwise.
We recommend starting by skimming through the free basic rules (see the pinned messages here in this channel). The first chapter actually goes over how to create a character step by step.
Then if you have specific questions you can ask those here.
Again, I’d recommend removing the overrides on your ability scores and starting at level 1.
Oh ok
And fixing your starting gold.
Oh how much should I have
However much is listed in the starting equipment for your class and background.
So in your case, 10gp.
What do you think of this character? https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/121450044
Not bad, I do have a few suggestions though
You probably should equip your gear from the inventory tab
Also, I would recommend starting with at least a +3 in your main stat, which is dexterity for you
I assume you rolled for those stats?
You may want to swap dex and con
I did… I’ll swap them.
For new character building, I would recommend using standard array or point buy to reflect a more realistic point spread
Okay.
Hello I'm new so what can I do here?
Well this channel’s for helping people learn to play D&D. Did you have any questions about the game or how to get started?
Alternatively, #channel-guide describes the many other channels we’ve got, if you were looking for a different kind of conversation.
Well no because I played it before with friends
Just how can get invited to a session?
Check #find-a-game
Are you searching for an in person or an online group?
There are recommendations for both.
Not sure if I should put this on newcomers or dm~discussion, but does anyone have tips for a first time dm? Specifically, how do I get the characters to meet or come together at the start?
Just start at a tavern or they something like that
More of a #dm-discussion question, but it’s up to you. Stereotypically you just have them all be at the same location at the same time of an inciting incident like a tavern
Idk I'm new to this thing
Or which would be better?
We can continue this #dm-discussion .
For first time DMs it's better to have a session zero where your players establish a reason and motivation to work together.
They're different but necessarily better from each other.
They each have their own pros and cons.
For in person games you can:

Consider the story or game you’re running and decide on the starting location from there. A lot of times it’ll default to social spaces where adventurers would gather like guild halls or taverns, but it may be convenient for your campaign for it to start elsewhere.
I’ve had many games that have started in taverns but I’ve also had ones that have started with the players in jail awaiting trial, attending a festival, getting in line to board a ship to the next continent, etc

Hi I'm Blake and the last time I played D&D was about 4 years ago but I really wanna get back into it and I'm always open to make new friends ^^
Hi, I go by a few names but my mane name is Red. I recently had a falling out with my previous dm, and am in the market for a new party to slay beast (and maybe people) with.
I am new to the game though played 15 years with my friend as a character. I would now like to be a DM.
I have the Dungeon Master's Guide but am still a bit lost. What materials should I read first and in what order?
I also am going through the free rules on DandD Beyone.
what do you mean, that you're new but have played for 15 years?
So you just haven't DMed

By the way for future reference how do I find these Dyno bot messages for different topics?
https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1151572394008395796 I'll post a bunch of them in this thread for you
Thank-you
I was up all night trying to figure out this game
I think I got it can you look at my character that I just made
Generally looks okay. You may need to have the Dungeon Master approve your use of a double-bladed scimitars and you likely don't need two of them. Or two card sets. But this generally looks fine.
Yeah I don't know why it glitched out for me I don't know how to fix it
It automatically gave me two of everything
Click on the Inventory tab, select the extra item, click the Delete button in the pannel that appears (it will be near the bottom)
Yeah no worries. Also interesting choice of Deep Speech as your character's second language!
I fixed it you can go look at it again and see if it fixed on your end
Yep looks good here
Nothin - I just said it was interesting!
Yeah this is a fantasy game - no english here! lol
Oh
Elvish, dwarven, draconic... these are some of the fantasy languages mentioned in the game
Deep speech too
It's all good - could make an interesting background to your character about how or why they learned Deep Speech

We actually don't run games on this server but read through #find-a-game to learn how to find a group/game to join.
Ok
It also has important instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels
Why does find a game not working
Ok
The amount of posts we have to delete because folks share their exact age or other stupid mistakes is crazy.
life of a moderator
Ok
To use the bot to create a post in the LFG channels it's basically /looking-for dm
Run that command on any channel and the bot will give you a form to fill out.
Once you submit it, it will create a post in the #750812887697588356 channel and create an attached thread.
Use that thread to correct any mistakes or clarify things or chat with possible DMs.
I'll also suggest looking through the posts in #looking-for-players and responding to the ones that look like they'll work for you - either direct message the poster or post in their thread that you are interested in their game. You can also look through #looking-for-community to find other D&D servers. And there's #paid-looking-for-game if you are okay paying a DM to run a game.
Yeah I have no money for the time being
No need to discuss it here - anyway happy adventuring!
You too
Hi I just finished my character sheet
Nice! What kind of character did you make?
Hello I’m completely new at D&D and thought it would be cool to create a character on the dnd app and go to its discord
So new here?
Same
So I guess we just gotta go to the #looking-for-players and dm someone and just start a game I suppose
I rather just play the text RP for now instead of voice
Are there any creatures that get weakened or injured in the presence of bright lights?
Is there any dnd campaigns for super super new beginners
There are indeed
Lots of stuff from the deep, dark bowels of the world.
Yeah, the Starter Set is specifically designed for beginners.
So is Peril in Pinebrook.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
To echo @smoky adder , there are three different boxes commercially available for brand-new players/groups. The Starter Set includes pregenerated characters and the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure. The Essentials Kit contains some item/companion cards, some specific rules that could be used for a 1 GM/1 player scenario, and the Dragon of Icespire Peak adventure. The third box may or may not have a special name, and has the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle adventure.
All three are set in the same general region of the Forgotten Realms, and if you have everything, you can have players wander from content in one story to content in another fairly seamlessly.
The third box is also called the Starter Set.
That's not confusing!
such as?
The first Starter Set is no longer produced.
That explains it.
Superceded by Phandelver and Below?
Sunlight Sensitivity. While in sunlight, the kobold has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16939-kobold
Sunlight Hypersensitivity. The vampire takes 20 radiant damage when it starts its turn in sunlight. While in sunlight, it has disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17044-vampire-spawn
As a couple examples
@languid beacon I have direct experience with both the (old) Starter Set (now the Phandelver and Below adventure) and the Essentials Kit. While some of the props/handouts in the Essentials Kit are nice, and I like the eventual fight (very minor spoiler) ||against the green dragon||, I think that the Lost Mine adventure is probably a little better for brand-new players/GMs because there's more structure to what happens.
Icespire has a definite touch of video game to it in the form of a quest board and the ability to free-form the sequence in which the party tackles things, which can increase the GM's prep load.
I have no experience with the new starter set.
So do I buy the board game or play it online some how
That's a loaded question. 😅
D&D itself is a tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG).
There are a number of D&D-themed board games in addition to the TTRPG.
This channel (and really, the whole server) is for the TTRPG, which can be played in person or online.
Everything you need to get started with the TTRPG is available for free, right here:
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
And for online play specifically, this article covers some of the more popular options:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
the D&D themed board games that are closest to the experience of playing the TTRPG are probably the ones based on the 4th edition rule set, but they are really focused on the dungeon crawl/combat part of the game, and not so much on the exploration or the role-playing parts. Those would include Castle Ravenloft and Wrath of Ashardalon as the first two.
that's awesome! as a new player, how was your experience with character creation in dndbeyond? I'm trying to sell my friends on the idea of switching from roll20 for when we're playing dnd. we have been using roll20 for our Pathfinder TTRPG for years
It was confusing only because I never played d&d
yeah I def get that. I think 5e does a great job of simplifying things, but its still going to be a lot to get familiar with regardless. what character did you decide to make? i'd love to hear about him/her
also feel free to DM me if you'd rather
But also it’s like a membership you either play as hero or master and with master you get to see maps but I think it’s only for labtop and sure I will
When I get a laptop imma get master
yeah that maps feature is in alpha still but I think as long as you're part of a campaign and the DM has that master subscription, you're good to go. even as a free player
I just recently got the 30 day master trial and I'm messing around with it to see how it works. I've never run a game, but I'm looking into that for the future
What do short rests do?
that greatly depends on your character type and/or what feats you have taken. but one example is, some spellcasters might regain a spell slot after a short rest. I think monks regain KI points. just things like that as well as some minor natural healing
What even are feats? xd
feats are just a term for specific special abilities or talents that you choose when creating or leveling your character
During a short rest, every character can spend hit dice to recover some HP. How many hit dice you have, and what kind of dice those are, depend on your class and level.
In addition, every class has features that are limited use per day. They will either refresh on a short rest (example: warlock spell slots) or on a long rest (example: Fighter's second wind; wizard/cleric spell slots)
certain rogue feats for example could allow you to gain extra damage with sneak attack in extra situations
Okay, thanks 🙂
Are you shortening "features", because feats are their own thing, and this could cause some confusion
technically, yes that's true. but the difference is small enough that it never felt an important distinction when first learning dnd. I could be wrong, but they seem to be in the same category and has never impacted my ability to make characters or play
Hi I would like to know the basics of DND
Hi same
Check out the resources here 👍
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.

Feats are absolutely important to distinguish from other features. The key thing is that they are generally (with certain exception) non-exclusive. A Wizard and a Fighter can both take the Athlete feat but a Wizard will never get Action Surge nor will a Fighter ever get Arcane Recovery
Guys whats the difference between a sorcerer and a wisard?
They both seem to have the exact same abilities
Which is weird isnt it?
Or it might be just me
sorcerers generally have different origins iirc
Wizards learn their stuff, sorcerers are born with it (and sometimes can't control it)
again, yes as I've acknowledged, they are not the same. we agree. What I was stating is that for the purposes of a brand new player with no prior knowledge or experience with the game or character creation, it does not impact that player's ability to create that first character.
Ohhhhhh
Soo i cant control my abilities?
If I'm going to break things down, there are currently 5 classes with Arcane spellcasting: Artificers (magic engineers), Bards, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Wizards.
If you're a sorcerer, that depends on your Sorcererous Origin. In particular, Wild Magic sorcerers tend to have weird side effects happen around them.
are there any other origins that tend to have weird side effects?
sounds like that'd be good for the character im working on atm
Wait im supposed to make a character?
if youre playing typically yeah
Can i be gojo?
if thats cool with your dm sure
Yesssirrrr
Feats are special character options that you can choose to take instead of an Ability Score Improvement whenever you would normally gain an ABI (usually at level 4/8/12/16/19).
They generally help a character either augment what their class already does (i.e. Actor feat on a Bard), cover weaknesses (i.e. Resilient - Con for a Wizard), optimize into a desired niche (i.e. Polearm Master for a halberd-wielding Fighter), reflect your character’s roleplay, or some combination of the previous four.
my current character is a cowboy from the 1800s brother you can do anything
Bouta use this reversal red on a lost girl
- Artificers: Magic Engineers
- Bards: Use music/song to channel magic, generally to the benefit of their allies or detriment of their enemies.
- Sorcerers: Magic is an inborn trait that will manifest effects on either them or the world around them.
- Warlocks make a deal with a patron for power.
- Wizards spend years studying to learn how to control the forces in the world.
I don't know sorcerers as inside-and-out as I know/knew a couple other classes, so I'm not sure off the top of my head.
So when we make the character we must use D&D Beyond?
Nah. In fact, I'd encourage you to build your first few by hand (even if you have to redo them in DDB later). It helps you learn the system.
Ultimately which tools a group uses/requires is up to that group.
if youre new id recommend it over creating a character sheet on your own
Wait how am i supposed to play?
The basic rules are available in this channel’s pins
There's some helpful links here to get you started:

Like do i have to go to a place irl to play or is it all online?
Depends on the group, D&D can be played in person as well as online
Depends on who you're playing with.
Where and how a group plays is up to that group.
Ngl i dont have anyone to play with🙏
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
that's where playing online helps a lot of us. I play mostly online because we're scattered in different cities
@frozen horizon ok but how do I do the sheet?
The first few chapters of the Basic Rules cover character creation.
But you can start by choosing a race, class, and background.
Ye i was scared i had to go to a group meeting with other people (im not so socially active irl)
just go to dnd beyond and click create a character
Where?
Ok thanks@frozen horizon
I would read the rules first before creating a character, unless you just want to get familiar with D&DBeyond’s UI
Im texting on phone currently😭🙏
dnd beyond has an app yk
Fr?
i agree you should read the rules first
68 MB
Im downloading it rn
Yeah, I’ve seen some wild first characters come about from messing with D&DBeyond first haha
myself included nearly a decade ago
my first character was Lebron James and i was a human fighter
a joke only i found funny
Mine was an unholy homebrew abomination of an earth golem dual-wielding tower shields
totally relate. I'm pretty introverted esp irl. some of my group, I've never met or even know what they look like. It helps me when playing, by focusing on my character interacting with their character rather than feeling so exposed in real life interactions. the layer of separation from your actual self has helped me open up quicker and easier to new people/players
im in two campaigns atm, i have an 1800s gunslinger and a satyr who's off the goop
for me it is easier to play dnd online than it is in person
makes the whole roleplaying part easier haha
Exactly
i play with my irl friends
Btw i downloaded the app now what do i do?
i'm not sure everyone's thoughts on this, but despite absolutely loving the mobile app, I prefer the web version when doing more than actually playing the game. all my character creation stuff, I feel I get more out ease and understanding when I use the computer/laptop.
Also with the mobile app u cant buy individual things u have to buy the whole book but on the web version u can just get the subclass or race u want
yes! i just noticed that too. I played over the weekend with dndbeyond for the first time and I was able to buy items/spells a-la-carte when I used my laptop, but the mobile app wanted me to buy the whole sourcebook. also, the sale price was only showing on the web version. the mobile app was going to charge the regular price
Wait i have to buy things?
That's an app store restriction around changing prices I believe
What's the least expensive way to get all the playable character options?
No. The basic rules have everything you need to play
you aren't required to buy things, but you can. If you're in a dndbeyond campaign with a DM that is sharing their content with the players, then you have all the content they are sharing with you
Probably buying Xanathar's, Tasha's and Monsters of the Multiverse, then piecemeal the rest
for me, the only sourcebook I owned for a long time was the players handbook
Okay finally got the app how do I make a character?
Past the basic rules buying books or joining a game with a player that can share the books they bought are going to give you significantly more character options
Oh, especially if I'm building a L1 character for which I own everything I'm using, I prefer to build them by hand and then re-create in DDB. Makes sure I know their stuff.
Agreed. I like to be able to open a new tab so I can look up information in the PHB or other source books as I make my choices.
Is it possible to be demon elf in DnD?
You could flavor an elf or a tiefling as one, or homebrew would be an option if nothing else fits
So I'm really new to DnD 😅 can you tell me what homebrew is please
Basically unofficial stuff made by players. Think of like mods for videogames
Oh I see
Anything is possible within the realms of D&D, but some things (especially regarding homebrew) you would talk to the DM about it. It is 100% possible to play demon elf, it is a cool idea. I think the closest thing in D&D lore would be Drow
But since this channel is to help new players learn the rules of D&D we prefer you to learn what rules are in the game than make something new (which would probably be imbalanced).
I see, understood
Depending on what you're looking for we may be able to recommend something official though that you can reflavor. Dark elf for example may have some of what you're looking for.
kinda? u only need to if u wanna use the stuff beyond when creating ur character and keeping track of ur spells and stuff but if u have a friend with a source book and u keep track of everything with pen and paper u can just ask ur friend for the details. its probs easier to buy the sourcebooks tho
Gotta know the rules before you can break them. 🙂
Thanks
i wanna break rule 🙂
No, the Basic Rules are free.
If you're using D&D Beyond you can buy individual playable races and/or sub-classes.
If you join a campaign group often the DM shares their (physical/digital) books to their players for character creation.
I'm not saying you can't. But until you know the rules, breaking them will have all kind of weird ripple effects that you can't foresee.
And the DM has final say on any homebrews (I don't allow my players to homebrew).
Similar, but before my last group fell apart with folks moving, we were also playing AL-compliant. Nowadays, I'm of the attitude that "Reskinning is fine, but I don't have the bandwidth anymore to sort through mechanical implications."
If u buy a sub class from a sourcebook on the web version of beyond could u miss out on not having access to spells for the sub class?
I don't know for sure because I haven't bought anything piecemeal.
I've bought a subclass that included a couple spells and it was part of the purchase.
What do you mean miss out? You get whatever the sub-class unlocks.
I assume they mean "If I purchase a subclass, but one of the spells on its spell list is also from a supplement, do I also need to buy that spell as well?"
May have to ask #ddb-support for that?
Do anyone have a cyberpunk D&d campaign going on
yh that.
I actually don’t mine creating one for beginners as a cyberpunk campaign however I don’t know how to play D&d yet but when I do learn I’m on it
Check #find-a-game
I seen one person doing something like it
why not just use the Cyberpunk TTRPG system
D&D isn't geared towards the cyberpunk genre.
Everyone else in the campaign I joined is more experienced and I feel annoying asking questions trying to learn stuff lol :/
Send link
cant i'll be automodded
Oh
I can only speak for myself, but showing new people the game and how to play is one of the joys of D&D
This channel is to help new players to learn about D&D. If you want to make a cyberpunk-themed D&D game I recommend discussing it in #homebrew or #non-dnd-topics if you want to talk about a cyberpunk TTRPG system.
go look up Cyberpunk Red
On it
but yeah this is off topic discussion
I was excited to learn about all the new lore and stuff but now I’m feeling a little burnt out and thinking I need to find a newer player focused campaign I guess
The campaign is super cool though
the people I choose to play with also encourage new players to join this fun game. so, answering a million questions is absolutely a part of carrying this game on into the future for even more people to get to play.
He’s. Not considering new players it said
That’s a kind sentiment 🙂 I understand combat can take a while but there’s aloooot of secrets and rules and stuff when everything’s new to you lol.
Oh wait I see it on YouTube
Any recommendations for finding new player focused campaigns to learn in?
Check #find-a-game
Local game stores, libraries, school clubs, and/or conventions may have "learn-to-play" sessions. And you can always ask someone who posted an ad if their game is friendly to new folks.
Aren't dark elves just Drow?
Drow are specific dark elves in Forgotten Realms.
if you're looking for online play, the find-a-game channel reference above often has postings that specify they're looking for newbies to the game.
So there are other kinds?
Even in the Forgotten Realms there are some dark elves that aren't Drow, but in other settings they can have different names or multiple different subgroups.
Yeah, this is a lore question and not really a new player question.
Heyo, has anyone a good Tutorial on Youtube or smth about how to effectively design your own campaing, especially the details for the story quests and adventures?
This is more of a #dm-discussion question.
Oh thank you!
I am a bit confused about Perception. It seems that most every PC should be able to perceive things. How does it work?
Perception is how good you are at noticing little details/hidden stuff.
Okay. So I have to have this skill?
Everyone has it but not everyone is proficient in it.
If you're proficient in an ability skill you add your Proficiency Bonus.
Your character's background, class, and race determines which ability skills they're proficient in.
Gotcha. So if my Wisdom is 10, my Perception would be 12 (1st level) and I would need to roll a 12 or lower to pass the check?
Perception
Your Wisdom (Perception) check lets you spot, hear, or otherwise detect the presence of something. It measures your general awareness of your surroundings and the keenness of your senses. For example, you might try to hear a conversation through a closed door, eavesdrop under an open window, or hear monsters moving stealthily in the forest. Or you might try to spot things that are obscured or easy to miss, whether they are orcs lying in ambush on a road, thugs hiding in the shadows of an alley, or candlelight under a closed secret door.
Link to it in the basic rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Perception
Your Passive Perception would be 10 if you're not proficient in Perception or 11 if they're proficient.
For a stealthed creature your Passive Perception is against their Stealth roll.
To search a room, you roll a Perception roll against the DC number the DM has established.
Okay. So my Perception is 10 and I must roll a 10 or less to pass?
No, read what I wrote above.
There is no fixed DC (Difficulty Class) number that Perception checks are rolled against.
Any ability skill check rolls have to be equal or greater than the DC number (not lower).
Greater? So when my bonuses get higher, it’s more difficult to pass a perception check? Like if I have a 16 pp, then it’s harder to pass than if I had no bonuses at a 10?
If your Passive Perception is 16 then you will notice things that have a DC 15 (or lower). So a stealthed creature who rolled a 15 Stealth check your character will notice them with their 16 Passive Perception.
No the DM will tell you the DC number you have to meet or beat to to be successful at something
If the DM decides that in order to find a secret door it requires a successful DC 18 Wisdom (Perception) check. Your 16 Passive Perception wouldn't notice the secret door but if you rolled an 18 or higher on your Wisdom (Perception) ability skill check then you find it.
Ok. Thanks. That makes much more sense.

best rogue multi class?
Multiclass is probably out of scope for this channel, but if you know what you want the character to do, the folks in #character-discussion can probably help you out
Hey, what’s up
Either the ceiling or the sky
Really depends on your perspective, if you're a worm, dirt would also be up

Hey

Hi
Hello
What’s up
I'm new to D&D Beyond, is there a starter video to create a campaign from scratch?
Yo im also new, aswell to D&D beyond, i already created a simple character but i havent played dnd before.

Yes I want to make a camping to run
#dm-discussion can assist
Go to that channel and ask your question
Which of all the channels?
Thanks
I literally linked it

Is there anybody who can teach me about how to play? i have read one of the books but im one of those people who struggle to read without forgetting prior knowllege of what i read
Sorry, I'm also new to Discord and I didn't understand it.

Hello
If you see a link that starts with #, like #dm-discussion, that's a link to a channel. You can click the link to visit that channel.
So i just got to DnD and i dont really know how to play
Welcome! There's some handy links a few messages up to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
A whole bunch!
Those links above include one for the free Basic Rules, which has all the rules you need to play.
This?
Yep!
Okay thank you
And lets say i read everything where can i play or what do i need for playing
Read slower, in chunks and also watch the videos
im actually watching the videos rn, im at the third one about Ability scores.
The answers are in the things you’re gonna read
And where can i play? I mean Discord or something

Thanks i guess?
Dnd is a game that boils down to a group of people talking to each other
Any vehicle for that communication works
Traditionally its sitting at a table
Modern times involve Zoom, discord whatever its convenient and available
I encourage you to read the rules and watch any of the countless streams of games being played these days on youtube or twitch
I started playing dnd not long ago and I'm worrying if my artificers mechanical assistant can use weapons, I'm also wondering if it can get feats every 4 levels
Okay i have watched a few videos, im not gonna watch all of em as i dont wanna be overwheelemed with knowllege day 1, is there a channel i can discuss my character to see if my character is balanced enough for a party to both enjoy and not feel underpowered?
aight thx
No problem.
Are you referring to a Battlesmith Artificer and its Steel Defender
A feat can be taken at any level in which your character would get an ASI (instead of the ASI)
I'm not sure I'm using the 5e app and it says I'm a mechanist artificer and I get a mechanical assistant
So it is class dependent
Neither of those terms are official
By 5e app are you referring to DndBeyond or a third party app
I think it's a third party app
A third party app is unable to use official content without a license which it seems it does not
This creates a problem for new players bc terminology is important and they have to rename alot
I again direct you to official content and reading the actual rules
Thank you
We cannot reprint Battlesmith for you here

Sure thing dosh
I got my new set of die. Came to realize why people don't use metal dye.
Metal die doesn't roll very well.
Have a padded mat or else your table will scratch.
Or a dice tray.
agreed
Thank you guys for the advice, it was getting a little odd that I roll it in my hand, shake shake shake, toss the die and it lands flat without rolling.
Question: how do spell caster restore spell slots? I understood that, generally, they are restored only with a long rest, but there are some exceptions. Where do I find that specific information?
Typically you find it in the Spellcasting feature that spellcasters get. There, it'll say how you restore spell slots. There's Warlocks though, who don't technically have the Spellcasting feature, but instead a feature called Pact Magic, which gives the spell slots that are restored on short or long rests instead.
Wizards have a feature called Arcane Recovery, where they can restore some spell slots on short rests, depending on a few factors that are litsed in that feature though. I'm not too familiar with the other classes, if they have methods to recover spell slots.
Just check out the class information: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
How do people usually get to experience how playing DND is like without paying anything.
There are billions of streams these days to watch live plays
Many game stores offer organized play through Adventures League or otherwise
School, library, or local groups
you get what you put into it
You can also play just fine with the free options
There are free games. DMs often share their (physical/digital) books with their players for character creation.
The basic rules has everything you actually need. The rest is just gravy
Sounds good
Hello
I'm new to the game and I'm wondering where I can go to find people to play with
Iv played before but not much and I have a basic understanding of the game and have made a character
I'm new to this too, if you get to find a beginner friendly game you could perhaps DM me
You could try out D&D’s community campaigns Adventures League https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
They have adventures specifically designed new players.
Sure
So for my first adventurers league game tomorrow I’m bringing:
Character sheet
Player handbook
Dice
Pencil and paper
Anything else I should bring?
Where’s a good place to look for irl players, my current campaign has been canceled the past few weeks and I’m getting anxious
Do you have any comic stores near you?
Or a library?
Yes and yes, but where do I go from there?
Does the comic shop that’s close to you also sell table top games?
For an in person game that’s more than enough.
Did you create the character using the AL guidelines?
You could ask them if they have any weekly games
Alrighty, I’ll do that :))
I don’t see anything on my sheet that goes against them
Also, I used point buy for the ability scores
In case you need it, here is the most recent version of the AL players guide.
Do you already know the which AL setting your session is?
I’m not sure if I’ll be able to know that until I get there
It’s not posted on the event page
I’m sure you’ll find out when you play.
Don’t forget to write down the adventures code for your logs
Enjoy your game
Depending on how tomorrow goes I might get new dice
All I have is the starter set dice
Hey! I never played DnD before, and don't even own a physical copy how hard is it to try to get into it? Also, where should someone like me look to learn how to play and eventualy start a campaign?
The generally agreed upon best practice is to give the basic rules a read-over, try making a character, and then go looking for a game to join. This way you have a basic understanding of the rules to make the learning experience in-game as smooth as possible
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
The above links are a great way to get an understanding of the rules
Thanks for the help!
Getting started is really easy. I love taking noobs through their first game.
Same
I would love to do that but I need to find free time.

Getting started is easy. There are plenty of people who can take you through a game.
check out the bot post a few messages up
Hi, I have very personal question, is there anybody playing D&D here that English is not his or her first language?
Hey I created a character and read the basic rules of DnD I'm reading the find a game section. How do I find campaigns to join for a first timer?
Find a game that sounds good in #looking-for-players and use the attached thread to the post to let folks know you're interested. Or create a post in #750812887697588356 to let folks know you're looking for a game (read carefully the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to use the bot commands to create a post). Or check out other D&D servers advertising in #looking-for-community
Or if you're okay paying, there is #paid-looking-for-game
Am I supposed to post a looking for dm in said channel? Because I'm not allowed.
Do I do the bot command in any given channel?
And then check out local game stores, hobby shops, libraries, or even local schools that may have game clubs.
yes, you use the bot command in any channel
Tyvm
You can run the command in any channel (/looking-for then select a choice).
Also there is Adventurers League (official organized D&D play)
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.
[Find out more](#al-rules-compendium message)
Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
• #al-admin-questions — Ask the AL Admins questions
• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
Adventurers League is a great way for new players to get into D&D.

Honestly, my first DnD experience was playing Baldurs gate 3. While it’s not exactly like tabletop, it’s pretty close. The game is adapted from the current DnD rules (5th edition) and it could introduce you to a few things
I’ve been trying to play baldurs gate 3 cuz it seems pretty cool😋
Let me reiterate, it’s not a substitute for the real thing, but it can introduce you to some basic DnD concepts
It’s what started my DnD journey 🙂
Fell in love with the game and wanted more
awesome
Also if you could get your hands on a players handbook that would be a good starting point
Okie
Pls help me I’m very new 🥲

check out the post here. There are also more usefull links up in the pins in this channel
So like i just thought of something right, artificer can create stuff correct?
Within reason, yes
So like couldn't you just like Technically create a nuke?
Then use that nuke on anything you desire??
Like for example- You don't like a certain town, Make nuke place nuke bye bye town or see boss, Place nuke them blow nuke and boss away???
No.
Aw
Artificers can create certain magic items as per their class features (see infusions). They're not Tony Stark.
Well.... technically speaking an Artificer could use the Magic Item Crafting rules to spend an abserd amount of gold and downtime to create a Spellwrought Tattoo of Meteor Swarm to do something similar
More an airstrike than a nuke
Hey I'm new to dnd and I have a small understanding of the basics of the game. Issue is im all my friends don't have any interest in it, is there a way I can play with random people online?
Yes, check out #find-a-game
hi, is there a way to play online ( I've never played this game before but a friend of mine says it's cool so I wanna give it a try 😄 )
Thats what i'm looking for @solar lintel
If you want to look for an online group within this server, check #find-a-game
However, since you’ve never played I strongly recommend reading the basic rules first, linked in this channel’s pins
Hello. I ama new dm for my group of buddies and I had a question about the d100
Say you roll an 80% what do you do from there? How do you determine whether the 80% is successful or the 20% failure is taken place
I believe it’s if you get 80 or lower on the dice.
D100 isnt used for determining success, d20 is
So then what are the percentile dice for
And succeess is determined wheter the d20 with modifiers meets or beats enemy AC for attacks, or DC for checks / saves
No I know that part
Yeah if you have X% chance for something to happen, for a d100 that usually means you’d need to roll that number or lower for C to happen.
For example , the Clerics Divine Intervention ability
Actually it is sometimes, I believe in older editions it was used for bending bars and things.
d100s are usually DM tools to generate loot, effects, or encounters , but there are some scenarios where it is used to determine success/failure
Okay so like for example
A homebrew Dagger that I make has a 30% chance to poison an enemy. That means I need to roll anything within 30% to succeed?
The most common on the player side being divine intervention , some spell effects require percentile dice rolls as well but I’m too lazy to check which ones
Yes but that’d be likely too powerful since it’s save-independent . Typically poison abilities force a Con save to resist the poison
whats poppin
Then yeah you’d need to roll within 1 to 30
Got it. Thank you star. Big help
Np
hi
Hey y’all!
heyyo
yes, but that isn't relevant here
A mic and cam are needed to play right?
No
A lot of online groups may need you to have a mic, and maybe (but less frequently) a cam, but there's always some groups that don't need you to have a mic, and there's always the option of playing in person
So it's either mic only mic and cam or in person
there's text as well, I believe its called play by post
Well depends. There are games where only text is used so presumably it works as well as any
Part of the group using text while the rest uses voice in my experience does get annoying though, having to wait while someone is typing
hellooo
Am so confused … first day on discord just want to find somewhere to find people who can teach me or play D&D online with. Is this the right place for a child of the 80’s to do that?
Well many of us unfortunately don't have time and bandwidth to teach folks one on one but we can point you to some good resources to help with self-learning

Hi
Welcome!
Is there a general chat where i can speak mostly about anything?
#dnd-discussion for D&D-related stuff
#non-dnd-topics for non-D&D-related stuff
Thank you
This channel if you're new to D&D and want to learn how to play.
I am mainly new to being a dm
#dm-discussion would be the place for DMing advice.
Same
I am looking for a resource I used before but seem to have lost; It was a website that let you make a character sheet and autofilled the calculations and then you downloaded it as a pdf
I can do it without it, but It's less busywork
I don't believe it was this; it was just an auto-calcing character sheet 😦
I didn't have to signup or log in to anything
It just took your numbers and filled out your skill tables and you clicked your proficiencies etc
ye
Well, D&D Beyond does that.
D&D Beyond is the only legitimate character sheet app that supports the 5E books (outside of VTTs like Roll20).
Guys i want to get into dnd and I can't go to a club or smth so is dnd essential kit going to help me play by my own or should i buy another thing note i already have a dice set and character creation sheets but i got no idea of how to actually play i will really appreciate any help and thx
Look for online groups here/other servers, there are a lot of opportunities for online games. Local nerd stores might hold D&D nights, and it *might * be accessible online as well
D&D is a group collaborative game. You don't really play by yourself.
If you can't play in person with others you can find online groups to play with.
If you want to play in person, check your local game store, school gaming club, and/or local Facebook D&D group.
The problem is that i don't really speal english i can bearly talk irl

Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
I live in the middle east and its really hard to find a group here
Then you can find an online group.
Check #find-a-game
Its a good idea but my english is really goofy 😭
There are text-based campaigns. I promise there are groups out there that speak what language you are fluent in, they might just be harder to find
I'll try to find a text based or some people that wouldn't judge by accent
Most groups won't judge, and if they do then theres no shame in dropping
I've played with people from a lot of different countries, I played one where there was people from the US, Russia, Ukrain and Canada. If you think schedulings hard in the same time zone.... 🫠
And btw can't i just use chatgpt as a dm?
You could use it to spitball ideas, I don't reccomend using it for an entire campaign
Nah managing time wouldn't be a problem
Ig i need to face my demon's and speak english to random people
For you, yeah. For other players it could be. There is a joke that scheduling is the true D&D BBEG
I believe in you! It is hard but it gets better
ChatGPT is not intelligent, it just simulates it. It doesn't remember things either.
Thx bro
Yup ik i tried it once
Do you live near one of the American military bases in the Middle East? At least in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a reputation for the US Army having a lot of D&D players because they needed something for their downtime.
Nope there's hardly anyone know it in iraq anyway
Time zone differences and scheduling would be the biggest issue I suspect.
Yup i guess so
Does everyone have the “help” action for out of combat or is it specific in some way?
As long as the logic of the fiction works, it's always allowable.
(Meaning, for example, it may break believability for multiple characters to try to give advice when somebody is trying to pick a lock. "Be quiet, I can't hear the tumblers!")
how do reactions work?
hello! i’m very new to dnd and i don’t really know where to start yet..are there any tips or suggestions i can go by? ^^

when is the best moment to heal someone?
When they hit zero hp
In-combat healing of allies still up is generally an inefficient use of resources
The best healing is a rest

Hello
Welcome!
Hey I'm new to the group but not a new player I just would like to find a group to play with even if that means I have to DM
Being a DM is certainly the most reliable way to get into a game.
Right
But either way, #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups.
Thank u
I'm sorta new to D&D and I had an idea for a character that I want to create, the reluctant Warlock, tricked into a contract by a trickster god
Go for it
! Careful, Warlocks are very confusing.
Eh, not particularly
They're only confusing if you go in with preconceptions about how casters work and are unable to change that
😅 I've already had a divine blessed Werebear Shapeshifter Barbarian/Paladin named Garbanzo. I doubt anything could be as confusing as that 😅
The campaign fell apart after the DM moved across the country, but I was having a blast
Wow!
I put his backstory in the tales channel. Rather proud of thinking of that
Entire backstory was my personal creation
Good evening y’all, I am back after 3 months
Just a discord community quest, I'm not actually new

Yes, but they tend to mainly cater for US games.
Oh is there another discord?

Hello im a newcomer, never heard of this what it’s about?
@pastel harbor The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
The real task is finding a game and people to play with which #find-a-game can help with finding online games here.
Out of curiosity how did you find the discord if you've not heard of D&D? (Also helps us know what you know at all about the game)
How did you find the discord????
D&D is a Table-Top Role Playing Game where people get together and one person takes on the role of Dungeon Master (DM) and the others take on the role of players playing Player Characters (PCs). It's a collaborative storytelling game where the DM sets the scene and asks the players what their Player Characters do. The DM decides if a dice roll is needed and establishes what rules are in effect for a given context. In this way a game of D&D is played.
Patience
'A township Tale' is a video game unrelated to D&D
Oh crap I’m on the wrong server lmao
Well thanks for stopping by anyway! 😉
i wanna host a campaign how do i post for it?
Hey everyone, how are you all?
fine you?
I’m good as well. Thanks for asking

Hi! I'm starting a new campaign as of tuesday evening. any tips for preparing for it?
like as a DM
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Yo I’m new
Welcome!
So what I need to do?

I have questions
Fire away. That's what this channel's here for.
Is undead race a Homebrew thing or already in game?
There's an official race called Reborn that's effectively someone returned from the dead.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/706719-lineages#Reborn
But there isn't one literally called "Undead".
Reborn like Frankenstein?
(And notably, a reborn's creature type is humanoid, not undead.)
Yeah, Frankenstein could work as a reborn.
This is just one part of a much larger guide: https://howtogm.guide/dnd-5e/game-preparation
You can ask any questions you've got, whenever you've got them. That's literally what this channel is here for.
Why this game is niche?
5E is been the most popular edition, with a peak of 50 million players world wide during the pandemic.
I have questions
You can ask any questions you've got, whenever you've got them. That's what this channel is here for.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
hi is there any games that are accepting brand new players a friend helped me make my first charactor alrd

thanks man
Can you make your character an ooze
There's an official plasmoid race you could use.
