Can never go wrong with Players handbook
Also, I have no idea what that city of cats one is. 😅
It's not an official book, at the very least.
Did someone make Cats the musical into a module 😭
For now I'd like to be a player but in time I would like to try being a DM.
A book like Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, or Monsters of the Multiverse might serve you better, then.
The Eberron book has some player options, but those may not be usable in all settings. The others are adventures, so you should not be reading them if you’re a player of said adventures.
They've each got a mix of player- and DM-focused content.
Start with players' handbook, and overview of the rules. Watch a dnd livestream or two to see how the game is actually run. Once you start DMing, you really just need DMs handbook-- Tashas and Xanathars have good extra things

What about material stuff needed? Rules and character creation are online and dice is a must, I know that but what about maps, DM screen, terrain, miniatures etc. Are those a must?
will do
They're certainly not necessary to play, though they're fun.
Is a staff or wand better for a sorcerer
Seconding Dosh. That stuff is nice but not necessary. Ultimately, these are things you'll hash out with whatever group you play with.
They're mechanically the same at a base level.
A staff might be usable as a quarterstaff. (The actual rules there are a little sticky.)
Worth a discussion with your DM, though.
Hello! I'm very new to DnD and I'm excited to learn more about the game :D

Hello
Hey there.
uhmm.. Any recommendations where to start in the game? I'm a newbie and this game got me interested because of the arts that I've been seeing. I went to reddit to find out more about it and, correct me if i'm wrong, it has different or a lot of scenarios? Anyway, I think for now I just need to know where to start 😬

DnD is a cooperative story-telling game, typically played around a table in person, over voice chat using a few programs online, or through text chat. It tends to have one Dungeon Master (DM) and 3-5 players. To summarize it as basically as possible:
- The DM describes a situation
- The players describe what they want their characters to do
- Dice are rolled if skill or luck is required to accomplish the task
- The DM describes whether they succeed or fail, and happens as a result
thank you! I'll start with this
I think this is what hook me the most. The story telling and the art.
What do you have so far?
Sure! Are you liking for clarification on the rules of character creation, or are you looking to talk about inspiration about the character themselves?
I think if I show you
Do you know what Gundams are?
Have you considered using D&D Beyond for your character sheet? A lot of the things remaining can be auto-filled that way.
Dnd beyond is a helpful tool but it is beneficial to learn how things work yourself, especially the first time
I have no idea what that is 🤣
That's has nothing to do with D&D. Ask in #non-dnd-topics
it's just a stylized warforged.
(mechanically)
I know what Gundams are and it has nothing to do with D&D.
Warforged aren't giant mechas.
Even if they are, this isn't the channel for it.
Moving along, what can we do to help with your new character idea?
This server has almost 200,000 members. In order to make sure things are always running smoothly, we like to make sure every channel stays on its specific topic, and that we move discussions to other channels when they veer off. It might have been jumping the gun a little to shut down the discussion before you could tell us what it was that you wanted to do with your character, but their point was that this channel is meant to keep things as basic as possible for newcomers, and giant robots are certainly not within the bounds of the basic rules

Welcome! The best place to start is to give the basic rules a read.
How much you can carry. Don't worry about it.
That's up to the DM to decide.
Ok mmm this is kinda confusing
What is?
What would be a good class
Whatever one you want. Your class defines your powers and playstyle. You can just pick whichever one sounds the most interesting. If you want something that's simple and easy to learn, the classes that don't use spells are typically easier. But none are so complicated that you can't learn it as a beginner
Do you want to fight with weapons or spells or both? Do you want to have a naturalistic kind of vibe, or be a smooth talking city type, or a bounty hunter bringing the wicked to justice?
Hmm ok I'm going as a fighter with two weapon style with proficiencies intimidation and athletic
Nice! If you want to flesh out your character idea more, then you can hop over to the #character-discussion channel for more advice. If you want more help understanding the basic rules of the game, feel free to ask more questions here!
Ok
is there an expert i could dm about questions? Im brand new completely but ive always been interested in starting dnd but i have so many questions that i dont want to be posting in the discord channels. 😅
The point of this channel is to ask questions! Everyone here is more than happy to answer any and every question you have
It greatly helps us if you can keep things specific though
its a lot easier to answer questions like "what is my proficiency bonus used for?" than it is to answer something like "how do I play D&D?"
see, thats the problem is i dont even know what that is. 🥲 Mainly i was trying to start a character build but i went to dnd beyond but they didnt have alot of races and classes that are in dnd. i want to do a beast master build and then play a campaign for new comers bc i feel like that would be the easiest ways but i dont know where to begin. :p
easiest ways to learn things*
D&D Beyond provides you with access to all of the rules and game mechanics that are available for free. There are races, classes, subclasses, magic items, etc that are only available if you purchase them or the rule book that they were printed in
If you want to access that content on D&D Beyond, you need to purchase it through their site, or play in a campaign with content sharing, and someone what has purchased it
ok let me play around with it and ill come back if i have more questions. 😅
Here is a link to the basic rules, if you want a more step-by-step guide to learning the game:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Thank you!
do you already have a DM to run a game for you?
hmm.. i guess a half hour is like forever-long gap in a conversation (i didn't notice that before replying to RickJames)
I didn’t know Rick James was getting into DnD 😂
I dont!
If you don't mind my asking, how did you figure out you wanted to play D&D if you weren't invited by a DM to join their game? This is not a judgement, i just can't imagine how I would have figured it out without someone inviting me to it. (Kudos to you, fwiw)
**the algorithm ** pushed ginny di's dice video on me
shes a great content creator and i watched a bunch of stuff, and dnd sounded way more fun than i had imagined in the past, so here i am learning more
A lot of folk get into D&D through other media- Actual Plays like Critical Role or Aquisitions Inc, or TV shows like Stranger Things showing it played, or games like Baldur's Gate 3, or the novels, or the D&D movie...
And there are even older media as well. I got into D&D through Neverwinter Night's 1.
so i haven't played in a few years last time i played the capign fell about after the first arc. I'm still kind of new to this. i first was exposed to DND when i was a teen back in the early 2000's loved playing it
So you probably started off with 3E/3.5E then.
ah yes, early 2000s, that was just a coup - oh god. OH GOD
definitely didnt appreciate everything that goes into a roleplaying game at that age.
Role-playing generally, when I picked up a book called the Monster Horrorshow instead of another Fighting Fantasy choose your adventure one, on the basis of "wouldn't it be neat to make up my own adventures?"
I got into NWN and DND around the same time. Been a DM/Admin on a NWN Server for a number of years.
Who tryna be my friend
i am quickly discovering that time and IRL is a major issue
ive never played DND and wanted to try it, anyone know where i can start

The above resources can help you get started! You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
The real task is finding a game and people to play with which #find-a-game can help with finding online games here.
appreciate it

For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person.
Online options in this server:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Elaborate on what your preferences you have for a game and what your play-style is. Details can help a DM determine if you'd be compatible for the campaign they want to run.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in #adventurers-league

Other options
You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
5e is generally considered more balanced and streamlined than 3.5 (note: more, it's coming from a low bar), but 3.5 has more player options and freedom from my understanding
and also, being unbalanced is part of 3.5's appeal
it's the edition for making broken builds by stacking as many things as possible
Definitely share this question in #dnd-elder-editions
That channel will have more people who are familiar with older editions of the game as oppose to this one, which is usually made up of people comepletely new to dnd in general.
uh i dont understand how to get my numbers for saving throws and skills
i srill have to do half of this in very little time crap
Your Saving Throw Modifiers will be the same as your Ability Score Modifiers, except for the two Saving Throws you have proficiency with, as described in the first feature of your class
both of those modifiers are relevant stat + (prof bonus if proficient)
your saving throw proficiency is mostly determined by your class, as paracosmic said
your skill proficiencies will be determined by background, class, and sometimes race
what donyou want the highest stat on for a barbarian
strength
followed by constitution, then dexterity
at level 1 you want at least 16 strength, and preferably at least 16 con and 14 dex
you might want high wisdom for perception and survival checks.
or high charisma for intimidate checks.
what would druids be proficient in?
im making 2 character at once sorry
It'll be Intelligence and Wisdom
you can see what saving throws your class grants proficiency in, in the first feature of the class description
how would i determine them though im stuck on that part
uhm i thibk i figured it out but idk
Your background and class will list which skills you get
(and race, if it gives any)
Read the instructions in #find-a-game , where the prompt is at the bottom.
i dont know what to do i just made a dnd beyond acc could someone help me out?
k thank you 🙂

Alright, when I create a character on DnD Beyond, I can choose between Starting gold or Starting Equipment. Does that mean that, if you have Equipment, you start with 0 money?
Your character's background will indicate how much money you start with, if any.
you usually start with a small amount of gold based on your class/background
Ah okay
My players will play without a background, so I'll just give them 10 gp each
What's that, a one-shot for learning the system?
Background also gives them 2 skills, and 2 language/tool profs and a minor feature, so be sure they have those too.
This. Going to leave them a bit short in skills.
It's strange that i can't see drow anymore as a race selection in dnd website
Some players say they played a campaign for years. What's the average length of a campaign? Does a campaign really last years?
Drow aren't a free to use option so might be what sources you have access too?
It can very much depend on the players and what campaign. Some of the pre-written adventures with some groups, playing weekly for about 5-6 hours might take them under a year. For others campaigns can last decades with a dedicated group. There's not a real average.
Actually what was the most of the free access in the website only. Was drow just a limited free access only?
I do really want to play as one
Hey Folks, Thanks for having me. Done a quick google and reddit search but cant find the answer to my query on multiclassing. When I take the 1st level in a new class the proficiency bonuses are limited as mentioned in the PHB, but does that apply to bonus proficiencies that come with selecting subtypes? For example if I multiclass into Cleric, I only get the proficiencies in Light and medium armour and shields, but when i select the War domain do i get the bonus proficiencies associated with that? Searching google for bonus proficiencies vs proficiency bonuses yields unhelpful results
Drow aren't free access as a player race. You'll need to purchase the Playerhandbook to have access to them.
I see
(or purchase them individually)
I've had campaigns last a few months, a couple of years, or in the case of my current ongoing campaign, coming up on 7.5 years, it really varies
Or play an available elf type, have the appropriate look, and periodically complain about the sun.
Multiclassing is a bit beyond the scope of this channel. Try #dnd-rules
Will do
Yeah, i was thinking of second options of using fan websites of character creation but that would be in the guide of the dm

The rules in those sets tell you what you need to know about how the game works. Assuming you got the Stormwreck Isle starter set, the adventure book does a particularly solid job of walking the DM through running the adventure. You can supplement any printed material with video guides, like Bob World Builder's series on the Essentials Kit. YouTube has stuff on Stormwreck Isle as well.
hey, what do I need for a D&D game? I know I need to make a character etc., but what else? Do I need to buy anything or can I go with free material?
You could easily play DnD without spending a single coin! The basic rules are all you need to play.
You'll need a set of dice, but digital dice can be used for free as well
There's some helpful links above that have everything you need to get started.
thank you
West Marches have a large community of players and DMs in a shared game world.
Wow
Any subset of the group can run their own game session on their own schedule.
It's a good option if you need flexible scheduling and don't mind playing with different people each time.
West March or PBP?
Play-by-post is all done through text. People just check in once or twice a day and contribute when they're able.
Oh
It's another good option for the time-constrained, but the tradeoff is that games usually move at a much slower pace.
This article has a good overview of PBP: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp
I'm extremely new (haven't even played once) what's the friendliest for newbies?
That depends more on the group itself than the type of game.
But West Marches are usually easier to get into, regardless of how long you've been playing.
Are there posts for campaigns for newbies and such or is it just going and trying your best to roleplay surrounded by seasoned veterans?
Most games are probably welcoming of newcomers, even if they're not explicitly advertised as such.
It's not super common for folks to specify they're catered to newbies, but such games are out there. Learn-to-play sessions such as the virtual weekends tend to attract new folks.
So if you see one you're interested in, it can't hurt to ask.
What are those sessions?
Thanks, spam!
Yeah, March's was just last weekend. 😅
Hey everyone - wanted to get some thouggs from the veteran DnD players, especially DMs.
I haven't played for a really long time but wanted to get back to it. I like the idea of playing a character that isn't super common in most parties.
Was thinking Deep Gnome Rogue, super stealthy, hard to see, etc. Someone who is Chaotic Neutral. Is this a common character? Can he carry many weapons besides daggers?
I go between Deep Gnome and Half Elf. Both seem really useful.
Thoughts on this or suggestions?
#character-discussion would be the best place to ask
Ok thanks.
Hello, quick question and a little background, I'm playing as a warlock with the archfey path, and he has requested a certain item that one of the players has, is there a set way I should go about "stealing" it from this player or an alternative is that we are still in the room with the item so I could get more of it to give to the archfey. I'm just not sure how to go about it
You definitely should not steal from your fellow players
D&D is a game about a group of heroes working together. If you do things that cause conflict within your group (in game or in real life) it will make the expirience less enjoyable for everyone
If that's something your DM has told you to do, I'd recommend talking to them about what the intention is
And whether the group as a whole has okayed that kind of thing.
Communication is the solution to a bunch of problems, even if they are in-game problems. You could talk to the player about the dilemma. "Hey, my character wants [thing], but I don't love the idea of stealing from your character. What do you think about that as a prospect?" And yeah, talk to the DM to see if there's an alternative route to success.
That is a good way for there to be issues between the players and the campaign to disband.
Don't try to have fun at other players' expense. The game is meant to be fun for everyone (including the DM).
i didnt know if it was something i should bring to the DM or that yall might know abouit
Assuming the other players at the table know about this, just talk with them if they would be okay with you stealing the item for your patron. If not, then you can always justify not doing it by having your character not willing to risk all the possible negative consequences and placatate your patron another way
alot of "I wanna do X at my table" problems can be resolved by just talking to your table about it
What's the link to make a looking for players thing
you just type the command "/looking-for-players" in any channel
Thank you as I'm mainly asking as my partner was trying to get a DND party setup and I wanna help as best I can by trying to use methods I did
As I got a person here to join my campaign and From that made a good friend who brought his friend making a good team for my campaign
Just hoping the same happens for them
is a cleric beginer-friendly?
Yes.
Very! It's probably one of the most straightforward spellcasting classes.
spellcasting can be a little tricky for new players overall, but it's definitely not impossible to wrap your head around!

Is there a way to get Dragons of Stormwreck Isle without buying the starter set
Because I don't want to play LMOP and I heard I should start with either of these 2
There are different starter sets, which separately include LMoP and DoSI.
LMoP's set is no longer even in print.
There's no harm in getting the starter set now that I think about it
I get extra dice and extra characters sheets
and it's only 13$
Howdy everyone
Me and my friends just had session 0 and I don't know what to think of it. It was very chaotic. Each of us three had some idea, our ideas were quite different and we wanted them to be implemented but there was no order to it. They just kept brainstorming and got me completely lost cuz they want to do homebrew of multiverse consisting of shows they're obsessed with.
Sounds like an easy avenue for confusion
is everyone a new player?
Yup I was so confused! I'm not familiar with the shows they mentioned and I don't really like the idea of dragging other games/series into D&D or BG3.
- thats why session 0s are impotant
- sounds like you need session 0.5
- Are you the DM?
Are you the DM and haven't done it before? Then homebrew plus trying to say "yes" to everything is increasing the degree of difficulty here.
I do suspect this might be a more fitting discussion for #dm-discussion, though.
I'm just a player. The DM is the friend who wants it to be homebrew multiverse.
Did you convey, "Hey, I'm not sure I want to play in that sort of game"?
I'd recommend just talking to the other players/DMs then. Express your concerns, and how you don't want it
There are ways to implement other medias without making the multiverse of madness. Currently, my players are on an island that is pretty much the forgotten realms verson of the Wii Sports Resorts island 🤣
Typically with a session zero there are some key things that a group should cover.
- Scheduling
- ( When & how often to play, time commitment everyone is willing to put in.)
- Table Expectations
- (Discussing boundaries and expected behavior, consequences for breaking those expectations)
- Campaign
- ( What the campaign is, what everyone is going to be playing, ensure that both are compatible.)
- House Rules
- (Though if you are all new to D&D you should not home brew and should start with a pre-written adventure.)
I said it would be easier for our first time to just stick to pre-made characters and stories but the DM said she's an expert at creating characters and making up stories.
Naw simple is better for first time
Maybe it's worth saying, "Easy for you as the DM, but not for me as a player."
Facts adding a massive slob of stuff does nothing but confuse new players
Hello Im completely new to dnd
My first campaign was a complete homebrew world- and it ended perfectly fine. You can be successful in making a homebrew realm in your first campaign but it takes a lot of work and time. It's even harder if there's a multiverse

There's a lot of misinformation online about it, so the rules are a good resource. Handbooker Helper and WASD20's Rules School also do a good job of summarizing info without adding static.
Get some practice and see if you can create a character.
Definitely take the time to understand how combat works.
Combat is wack sometimes for me and I've been playing for years 😭
It might be worth to suggest trying out a pre-written adventure designed to be played in a single session.
That can provide a great opportunity to review and ask "Given this test run, what does and doesn't work for us as a group?"
Oneshots are a blessing
How does multi classing work?
It's described in the rules, and it's frequently cited as beyond the scope of the newcomers channel.
when you gain a level, you pick what class to gain that level in. So if you are one class, and you gain a level in a different class, you have multiclassed
As a new player I don't recommend you bothering with multiclassing -- just concentrate on learning one class at the moment.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters
What everyone else said, + I recommend messing around on the site I'm linking. Click around, make a random character or two
On your own or for a party?
Noice
When I play for the first time imma just mirror my first character from bg3 more or less
Human male fighter, basic as is fun as hell for a beginner 😂
Good thing to do, there is a slight learning curve. There are some things that BG3 does that is changed from D&D
I don't think its that much for fighters
What subclass? My first character was a champion fighter, very fun
Lemme double check
When your character has an opportunity to level up instead of gaining a level in your current class, you choose to take a level in another class if you meet certain Prerequisites.
You can read up on it in the free basic rules after you gained some experience: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing
Main reason why multi-classing is not recommended for new players is because you need to understand how the individual classes work on their own to have multi-classing work well, otherwise you run the risk of having a character that isn't very good at either thing the classes excel at.

Eldritch knight
@ whoever did that, Larian Studios has their own server where you can ask BG3 questions, there is also #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers
I love Eldritch Knights! Stabby and magic
I've only played them in BG3 though
I have a friend who only plays human paladins, I’m trying to get him to branch out
What does homebrew mean?
homebrew is the term for fan-made content
Ah
Like a mod for a video game
what's moonshine?
Homemade alcohol
Oh
they were just making a joke about it being "home brewed"
NVM I found Out of the Abyss. We can start at level 1 so I get more of that low level DnD goodness. It also just sounds fun
What does constitution stat do?
It determines your HP, as well as how well you are able to resist effect that effect your body, like poison or exhaustion
Increases your hit points per Hit Dice (character level) and modifier for some saving throws.
Let me visualize how the stats work using tomatoes
Strength is being able to crush a tomato. Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato. Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato. Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad. Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
Did I get anything wrong?
Strength is being able to crush a tomato.
Dexterity is being able to dodge a tomato.
Constitution is being able to eat a bad tomato.
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit.
Wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.
Charisma is being able to sell a tomato based fruit salad.
No, I pasted it. 😉
Is that a reference to something 😭
I actually typed it out
What's the limit on what patron you can use as a warlock?
Like can I use Kermit as mine?
Screw it Im using either kermit or shrek
That's probably something you'd want to discuss with your group as well.
There is nothing stopping you from making it kermit AND shrek. And making them fight over you
Some groups might enjoy it.
I just got a genius idea
But yeah, DM convo and player convos are important
Some groups probably wouldn't.
Lets try to help them set more reasonable expectations
If everyone else is expecting a Lord of the Rings kind of vibe, then it might not be well-received.
Its for their own character, not a campaign. I have been sayin/agree that Session 0 and convos are important
Im confused between a few classes
Which ones?
Monk, Warlock, Bard
The ultra dummed down version is Monk go punch punch, bard go magic with music/words, warlocks are magic bc of their patron
Monk is a martial artist without magic, bard is a performer (and spellcaster), warlocks are oddballs who have magic but it doesn't look like any of the other classes.
Quick question can monks use suplex?
Do keep in mind that the game you are playing in and the group you are playing with will determine what does or does not exist within that game-world. Most groups do not allow things like direct references to other pop culture in their games. What is or is not allowed is up to the group you are playing with, as everyone has said, but its certainly won't be standard for that to be allowed
There's no specific feature, but you're generally allowed to describe things as you like so long as you aren't changing how things work in the game. Like you don't get to say, "My character is so tall that he can just step over a chasm."
Follow up question what's the limit to what a character can suplex?
Whatever the DMs limit is
Hypothetically if the DM allows it, can I HYPOTHETICALLY suplex a dragon?
That's a big hypothetical, literally, but sure?
My monk has killed someone via backflip and mike tysoned a different enemy bc I rolled high, it depends on the group on what you are allowed to do
Hell ya
But spitballing ideas without understanding the game only goes so far, honestly.
And without a DM^
The closest thing in D&D to a suplex would be a grapple. There are rules that determine what you can or cannot grapple
whether or not a dragon can be grappled is determined by certain things like how large your character is and how large the dragon is, etc
Id say probably not, unless the dragon is small
a medium sized creature could grapple a young dragon
You are generally free to describe an attack narratively however you like, subject to the table’s discretion
Let's say a goliath monk against a medium dragon
there are narrow mechanical options for “suplexing” something
There are no medium sized dragons
I would suggest putting these ideas down in a notepad or something
And then focusing on reading and learning the basic rules to see how the game works
Young dragons are the smallest kind, and they are considered to be in the "large" size category
D&D Beyond/Players handbook are a good place to start
I am sure we could spend all day addressing every idea but it will be more fruitful if you spend some time learning so we can discuss with context

Everything u need is here to get started
I run a fast and loose game with my kids 8-9 yo. My daughter initially picked a fighter class. At level 2 approaching level 3, she wants to be able to cast magic. What a reasonable way to do this?
Battlemage?
Eldritch Knight?
There's a fighter subclass called Eldritch Knight that gives limited access to spellcasting.
There's a spell called Find Familiar. Not sure off the top of my head if EK can get that one.
They could take it.
(But you could also just give her a pet.)
I just thought of something...spirit statue like Guenwyvar
I don't know what that means. 😅
Drizzts has a panther he conjures from a statue
It is a wizard spell, so it could be their 1 spell that doesn't have to be Abjuration or Evocation, at level 3
Roleplay only?
Thanks sonmuch
Letting your player have a pet for social encounters lets them have their fun
A creature that can actually do stuff mechanically is more complicated so thats up to your discretion as to whether you want your player to have to manage that
A familiar is a game mechanic. It comes from a spell and has defined rules for how it works. Zero is suggesting that you could give them a pet that is basically just an animal NPC. Rather than being tied down by the rules, they could just meet a real animal and befriend it
Technically there are a few creatures that can count as a familiar without the spell.
You might also be interested in the sidekick rules from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
That would allow for a pet that can grow in power alongside her.
Man, you guys are on point. Thanks again
ive never played d&d before but im rlly good at embarrasing myslef im scared lmaoooooooooooooooooooo

Don't be. Game Store is a great place for such things.
wydm sorry;)
Find a game store near you. The odds are very good that they've got groups that play in-store, possibly through Adventurers' League. In-store games are usually open to most anybody provided there's space, and also usually have people who are willing to help you learn.
ty! i might check it out :))
It is helpful to remember this is a game not a judged performance or test. The goal is fun
Hi
Ummm, is there a way to play d&d with online played anywhere? I'm newbie so I just want to experience this. I can't find a people irl to play

I kinda feel bad for having agreed to let my friend try homebrewing only to change my mind. I texted her it's not a good idea considering we're newbies. She was so excited to create a story. Unfortunately her idea is not making sense to say the least.
There is some miscommunication there
A character’s backstory is inherently “homebrew” as it is created by the player, subject to the DM’s guidelines
Homebrew in what way? A campaign world? A campaign adventure? Rules? Classes?
Homebrewed rules are mechanical changes to rules or other mechanics
But regardless, I would highly recommend AGAINST new players homebrewing anything since they don't know what's balanced.
Homebrew merely means deviating from official material, it is common for roleplay and campaign setting and changes nothig about gameplay
There are plenty of prewritten adventures to get yourself started.
Honebrew mechanica should not be attempted by new players bc they have no frame of reference
So you need to clarify what you’re “homebrewing”
She wanted to homebrew pretty much everything, from campaign to rules. Well, turns out she wants the campaign to be a mix of Warcraft, BG3 and anime. Sounds like a nonsense to me.
Your friend needs to take it down several notches with her expectations.
There's always other games. Looked at Freeform Universal?
anime BG3 warcraft
i feel like i know a system that she might like
Thats not gonna work, its not DnD anymore.
yeah that just doesnt sound like dnd
but there are many games out there that can fit that vibe
When you're ripping out stuff and putting in new stuff without knowing what either stuff does to be balanced it's going to end badly.
honestly if homebrew comes to the point where the game is mechanically unrecognizable, id suggest switching to a different system
"5e but every rule is changed" nah fam at that point ur not playing 5e anymore
Remember that D&D isn't the only TTRPG. There are plenty of TTRPGs that cater to "niche" genres.
rpg of theseus
The things listed werent even TTRPGs, so…🤷♂️
ah but there are systems that are good at emulating the feel of non-TTRPGs
Okay let's get things back on topic and helping newcomers
Looks like we'll have to have another session 0.
Hey we all do that. During my first campaign I was playing Metroid Dread so I gave one of my members an arm canon and literally just put a boss from the game in there.
It's still not good though
Well how can I make adams backstory dnd?
Adams game backstory is that vicki their creator accidently pumped too much blood into a sandwich while testing out a prosthetic arm they were making
That’s a discussion you’ll have to have with your DM.

Hello, I am new here and I don’t know anything about dnd, it seems a bit overwhelming so I don’t know where to start, what would be a good first step, and what do I have to know before searching for a game
Read the links above.
You can start looking for a game whenever you like.
People can and do start playing with no understanding and just learn as they go.
But if you don’t have a group already, then the better you understand the fundamentals, the more likely you are to get accepted into one.
Yeah I neither have a group nor understanding 😂😂😂
Is there any app or somewhere that you can create character or smth like that
Point is: nothing stops you from learning while you look.
At a bare minimum, I’d recommend learning:
- these common terms
- what to do on your turn
- how your character’s own abilities work
I like using D&D Beyond for that.

Hi

Theres too much really to go over it 1 on 1 I'm afraid, its generally easier to go through the above links yourself
But feel free to ask any questions if theres stuff that doesnt make sense
Before looking for a game, do we make our character after knowing the DM or before?
I have 0 games played lol
How much learning game mechanics is necessary before we can assume we're ready to play?
Been a DM for 8 years, though I'm brand new to the discord. It definitely helps to have some idea of what you want to play, but you don't need to have a character before you start. A lot of DMs like to have a Session 0, where everyone makes their characters. It can help to be with the other players when you make your characters because then everyone can plan their roles as a group
As far as mechanics go, you really gotta learn them as you go
Tell your DM you're brand new and they'll help you along
Thanks~
The more familiar are with the games mechanics the easier your first game will be both for yourself and your table
A character for a campaign should be made according to your DM’s guidelines so you dont make one for a campaign till after you have a DM
HOWEVER for learning/practice/fun there is no limit to how many characters you can make, and running through the process is part of learning the mechanjcs
Havings said all that start with the basic rules

I want to play a battle master fighter, what is the most minmaxed build I can make into strength that makes me deal the most dmg?
I was trying to make a homebrew monster, and got stuck on how to calculate hit points. Any tips?
Hey everyone
it's my first time trying to play D&D
but idk which World is the best to start on
#homebrew would be the place to ask
Are you asking as someone considering being a DM?
Forgotten Realms is the most commonly used setting, with many of the prewritten adventures being written for that. You can also make your own. #dm-discussion can help out more if you want to dig into the different settings and see which one you prefer, but 5e mostly supports Forgotten Realms, with one or two adventures written for the other worlds.
Would Planescape be a good campaign for beginners?
No
Planescape deals with the multiverse, specifically the Outer Planes. That's more stuff to explain to new players than necessary than a starter dungeon would.
It's a great campaign to run after your first 1-2 adventures!
What kind of background are your beginners coming in from?
Hey I'm kinda new to dnd and I have been given a magic Warhammer by the dm ,what class can utilize it efficiently the most?
Um... presumably you have a character in that game already?
Any class that likes strength and uses martial weapons would love a magic warhammer. Fighters and paladins would be good examples. As Jeff asks above, is your DM giving you a magic weapon before you've even picked your character? That's... Rather unusual.
It's kinda weird I got to a place that swaps adventures and allow us to pick a new character if we want its not a continuing story as to say.
Strange!
Well, a fighter, barbarian, or paladin would probably make best use out of a warhammer.
or a cleric in the appropriate domain.
Thanks
Dnd it's a foreign concept from where I come and in my city theres only 1 place that hosts dnd nights ,could I ask for some tips so I can familiarize myself with this or become a dm one day?
(Appropriate domain would be anything that gives proficiency in martial weapons)
Are you familiar with the basic rules?
Mostly yeah
What kind of tips are you looking for?
I plan to make a homebrew campaign in the near future but how do dms make it work and have details of almost everything
Let's hop into #dm-discussion to answer that
i wish to join dnd beyond campaign but its long since i played .

ill check it out
oo thank you
Hey I'm fairly new to DnD and was wondering other than essentials like character ideas and that. Should I look out for people advertising that they are new player friendly? As in, is there this expectation that you know a lot about DnD or will DMs guide you through all that in an introduction?

Ok so I have a question,I already have a character set up and I just want to get into a game just to know how to play it can I do that?
I know the basics as in how combat functions, abilities and all that together. I've learned about most of that stuff though those kinds of videos
I suppose the question would be more leaning on if there are like gatekeeping kind of tendencies, like if I don't know all the spells by name, or if I don't pick the right build etc. Is there any of that?
But I can’t this week bc I’m grounded I prolly can next week tho
usually you'd want to get into a game first before you start making a character
I didn’t know that
I just set him up yesterday
yeah it's usually not the wisest idea to make a character before a game, unless ur doing this to like buildcraft and stuff
mainly because the DM will usually have setting assumptions that may conflict with your character concept
anyway, as for joining a game, refer to these channels
#find-a-game
It's always good to read the rules. Videos only cover so much. You don't need to read all of the Basic Rules, just enough to create your character and the combat rules. Read it at your own pace.
That's fair, I am assuming my question also depends on the DM
The player friendly question?
Yeah, as if I approach the DMs should I avoid one that look like they are for more expereienced players
The more you know about the game's rules the better you can help out the DMs. DMs are busy as it is and going in blank is a drain on them and slows down the game -- remember, you are not the only player at their table.
There are plenty of new player-friendly DMs but again, you need to put in the work to know the fundamental rules. Having the DM constantly pausing the game to teach you what are abilitiy scores or what's a saving throw, is rather rude to the other players who took the time to read the rules.
I know all too well new players slow down games, hence should I look for ones that look more friendly to new players? Is there a way to tell?
Also I know all the games systems, just haven't played
That said, this channel is here to help new players out. There are plenty of experienced players such as myself happy to help you learn the game BUT you need to put in effort yourself.
The only way to know is to join the individual DM's game.
Yeah, I suppose that's the answer I was expecting
I just don't like wasting peoples time, or getting yelled at for being new lol
Finding a good table to join is like dating -- you can only find out what they're like by talking to them. D&D is a social game afterall.
That's stressful, but I suppose something I just have to start looking rather than waiting for it to come to me lol
hello everyone
Hi hi

Looking to join my first campaign and curious about startplaying. I found one that seems to check all the boxes and is currently 1/5. Most of the others I've seen have no signups yet.
I guess what I'm wondering is how long does it normally take for a new campaign to actually start?
That's up to the individual DM on their prep time. If they're advertising then they should be ready to go "soon."
Hello im new here and im trying to find other finnish people or finnish speaking people to hopefully help me and my friends to start playing dnd and hopefully also make new friends who enjoy it. Dm's are open. (If this message is in the wrong place please dm me.)
Welcome! You can check out the pinned messages in this channel for resources and please feel free to ask questions.
I'm more talking about how long it takes to actually fill a game. The one I'm looking at is scheduled but says it won't start until at least 4 people sign up. Just curious how long it normally takes for new campaigns to get enough people to actually start.
Again, that's up to the individual DM since they're the one selecting from potential players.
There's no general rules to setting up a game. It varies depending on the DM, players, scheduling, or other factors.
Check #find-a-game

i just wanna be ultimate strong
Can you see my confusion
for blessed it only works on one attack roll right?
Any attack or saving throw roll within the duration of the spell (up to 1 minute).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/bless
You bless up to three creatures of your choice within range. Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw.
how many turns is 1 minute might i also add
1 round is 6 seconds. 10 rounds is 1 minute.
thats perfect ^-^

Hey, new to Dnd, looking for a casual experience for a new player really, anyone be able to suggest anything for me?
Adventurers League might be good, if you live near somewhere that does such events.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Is the PHB essential if you already know the basic rules to dnd?
No, it just expands on options: subclasses, feats, and the like. The rules are the same.
So like on D&D beyond, the feats are limited because of the books I don't have. If I already know the feats, can I just add it in there once I reach the certain level and it be ok?
Ohh no events near me, was looking here maybe to join a campign, I dmed for 3 of my friends and haven’t really played yet. Obviously I winged every part of the DMing and found it fun. I got them all to download DnD beyond to roll from there, no map no nothing except the app. I have watched a good few videos and such explaining mostly the DM side but also seeing it apply to a player also. So I was looking here to kinda get a grasp of actually playing the game
The Basic Rules are linked in the channel's pinned messages. Start looking them over!
So long as you don't publish the content for public use, yes you can use DDB's homebrew tool to implement any game features that you have through other means that you don't have access to on DDB.
Ok thank you 🙏
I have looked over them already, I have watched videos on what not to do and such, but the people I played with were casual also, I am kinda looking for the same but more on the roleplaying side

^ That's how to get started with the Looking for Group/Games part of the server.
So will people expect new comers aswell? Or would they be expecting you do know a lot?
That varies. I would say that you're more likely to find a group willing to bring you on if you've learned some yourself; with as many resources as are out there, there's really not much excuse for not trying to absorb some.
Not every post specifies they're open to newcomers, but you can always ask!
Yeah it’s pretty enjoyable, learning the rules and such, the DMing is fun but I feel like I need to be the player to then understand the both sides and improve DMing for my casual group to then get on the roleplaying side
Mannn I just texted the mono bot if we can play Dnd together, niceeeee
Not how it works - you use the bot commands (as noted in #find-a-game) to get a form to fill out that the bot then generates a post for you in the proper Looking For Game channel and then attaches a thread to the post that you can use to add any clarification or communicate with folks interested in your post.
Oh I see - you successfully used the bot to create a post. Awesome! Hope you're able to find a good group to play with soon.

There's no system for that. You would need to make a post yourself by following the instructions in #find-a-game or replying to the posts in #looking-for-players, #paid-looking-for-game, or #looking-for-community.
Okay thank you
Keep in mind that there are substantially more players than there are Dungeon Masters (DMs) so it may take you awhile to find a table that fits you.
To be specific, I have to actually create the feats via homebrew to emulate the actual feats from the PHB right?
I just can't publish them?
As long as you keep them for your private use in your own campaign.
I shouldn't read the Dm rules if I just wanna be a player right?
Correct.
why shouldn't players read the DM rules?
Just read the first four chapters on character creation and chapter 9 on Combat.
Because they're not the DM so those rules are really irrelevant as a player.
Players should just concentrate on how their own character functions.
maybe check with your DM.
if someone is new to D&D, I don't see any harm if they read something unless their DM tells them not to. Just don't utilize what you've read to metagame (unless that's allowed)
Players don't/shouldn't be reading the monster stablocks. That's meta-knowledge and considered "cheating" in D&D.
I won't read the Dm rules then
Let's keep this simple for the new players. It's overwhelming as it is.
Thank you everybody for the help
only meta if you act on it
Again, this is channel for new players. Let's keep it simple for them.
This channel is for new to D&D folks to get help getting started with core game rules and mechanics.
Do you need help with DnDBeyond's homebrew tools? If so, check with #ddb-support. If you need help with general homebrewing ideas, check with #homebrew
Again this channel is about basic rules and game mechanics and not homebrew
Homebrew is not really a #dnd-newcomers topic

my friend and i have already made our characters we just looking for a DM to help us learn the game through an actual campaign.
Then read the info and instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels
Is there any part of the character creation process that should wait until getting a dm?
To be honest, both everything and nothing.
You should feel free to make practice characters, but be prepared to change them per any DM requirements once you find an actual game
And if you want to raise your odds of a prebuilt character being accepted, use point buy over rolling stats.
The DM can always have you roll later if they use that method, but no one is likely to take pre-rolled stats
@main fulcrum thank you 🫡
Lore/backstory is always gonna be the big one. It’s always best to try to design your character to fit in your DMs world, so it can be hard to plan those things ahead of time. Especially when it comes to stuff has to do with deeper lore or cosmic forces, like a cleric picking their god or a warlock picking their patron
Thank you also very helpful!
Honestly I have no clue what I'm doing lmao, never played a game of dnd

how hard is it to get started in a campaign? like to learn it from ground zero
If you start with an adventure book, it can be fairly easy.
Some of them are even designed specifically for new players.
The biggest pitfalls new players fall into is trying create a campaign from scratch while begining to learn how the game works.
Best recommendation would be to play a pre-written adventure with some premade characters
Hi I want to start learning how to play DND but I don’t know where to start. I recently got the players handbook. Is there anything else I can do?
That’s plenty, honestly. Watching video explainers or actual play can also be useful, but doing so isn’t necessary.
Hello! I'm really interested in trying to DM a game. Is there some advice you could give or giving me good ideas on how to start!
anyone have any tips to designing my first dnd character? wanna start a group but don't know where to start on my own character

Oh, thanks!
are dnd characters typically completely original or like self-insert? I've no idea where to start in that regard
characters are generally original, self inserts don't tend to work super well for something like dnd
makes sense, thanks:)
is there like a limit on what species my character can be or can it be anything I think is cool? I see there's like basic species but then so many more listed after that??
The available races are in the basic rules. If you buy the PHB and supplements there are more options
so for like rhe bird and cat people I have to buy smthn seperate
Yes
Though you can just buy the race
Tabaxi and Arakocra can be purchased individually
and if I buy them I can use them in normal campaigns?
and can I have my tabaxi look like any cat like a house cat or specifically rhe more cheetah/leopard look. the stuff I see online is a bit unclear
You can have them look like any cat you want. Flavor that doesn't change mechanics is entirely up to you
cat in the hat time
100% he's an archfey patron
Much too powerful to be a PC
so if I had an anthro feline style oc I could just kinda make her into a dnd character if I apply combat rules and whatnot to her? I'm horrible at character design so I'm trying to be lazy lol
As long as your dm says yes I see no issue with doing so
I've seen plenty of people make a catboy or catgirl that mechanically was a tabaxi
would I be able to dm u a character design and see based on ur judgement if she'd fit into a campaign? it's fine if not I jst don't want to look dumb asking my dm last minute whenever we form a group
hallo, I'm a newcomer who knows almost nothing about the game, but I do understand some of the gameplay concept and the rules of the game. I'm pretty interested in getting into dnd, can anyone help me get started?

I’m not to experienced but i could give you some help
thank you, can we talk in dms? i dont want to flood the channel with our conversation
Yeah okay
That's actually kinda the point of this channel
That way you're not relying on one person to answer all your questions and instead others can contribute
oh wait, really?
um, lets talk here then
Okay that’s fine what is it you want me to help you with
firstly, how would guilds or sub groups work around this server?
We don’t play on this server - just discuss
just discussing?
Correct - D&D games happen off this server
You can find groups to play with in #750812887697588356
Oh, now thats what im trying to find 👍 😉
im great at conversing, i could try to be active
But first before you try to do that you should see if some people you know in real life would want to play since it would probably be easier since your not strangers
oh okay
But obviously it’s totally up to you
Don’t let me discourage you that’s just what I would do
but, its hard to find real friends irl
no, its alright
Yeah it is lol
Hello,
how do you play the game when you have all success death saves marked?
Are you asking what happens when you succeed on three death saves?
Yes
On your third success, you become stable (see below).
thank you!
Hi
Hii!!
Yea I’m new new tho so no knowledge what so ever
Hmm... So basically you just need to learn all the basics of the game
Ooo fair

Well, I think you should take a look at the Basic Rules book on DnD Beyond first imo
I have 2 apps that I think is dnd apps
I have dnd beyond and prism
Good good
I have no character so I would like to be helped prioritizing that
Okay. Well you should first go to the "Create a Character" part of the website. Not even for your first class just for a reference yk?
I'm going to be honest, never used Prism before. But I would assume so
Ok so I’m seeing standard and custom
I would assume standard are set presets for every character, and custom... Is custom. Standard's a good idea I think
I'm assuming that's standard array
Ok
Or that. Yeah that sounds more likely lol
There is 18 steps to making a standard character
I’m on roll type and there is 3 options which is step 4
there's not, there's 5
- Choose a species
- Choose a class
- Determine your ability scores
- Describe your character
- Choose equipment
I’m using prism
Try reading this chapter from the basic rules
Chapter 1: Step by Step Characters
I am currently using prism to make my character Davyd
I have no familiarity with that app, but I'd recommend reading the Basic Rules on character creation first
Which section is that on dnd beyond?
If the spell components say V, S, M does it mean that you need all three for the spell to happen?
I linked to it
Here
K
yep, it does
Kk thanks
Is getting 6,5,6,6 a good roll on it?
"It" being?
What is better, healing word or cure wounds?
@analog walrus #character-discussion is probably a better place to ask
It said roll 4 6 sided dice
Kk
And it says record the 3 highest
So you're rolling for ability scores
Yes
Yes, getting 3 sixes is good
Given that it's the highest you can roll on a six sided dice
Well 3 sixes, but semantics :D
I’m running rogue and my racial gives me +1 to all stats it says so would that give me 19?
Yes, 6+6+6+1 = 19
K I’m put it into dex cause rogue
Yeah that's a smart choice
My 6 numbers are
13, 19, 17, 15, 14, 13
My advice? Put the highest stats in Dexterity, Intelligence, Charisma/Wisdom
Why?
What is prism?
I think a dnd app
Because those stats are more generally helpful for you than Strength or Constitution. Well I mean Con is generally helpful, but not especially for you
What does constitution do
And those other stats will be more important
Con is basically your health and resistance to sickness/diseases
I’m on rogue proficiencies
Actually let me pull up the page so I can walk you through it
Acrobatic’s (Dex)
Athletic’s (str)
Deception (chr)
Insight (wis)
Intimidation (chr)
Investigation (int)
Perception (wis)
Performance (chr)
Persuasion (chr)
Slight of hand (dex)
Stealth (dex)
Those are my options
And I can chose 4
You can just pick which fit your character and their personality, behavior
But you should do at the very minimum 1-2 Dex focused proficiencies
For my dex I did acrobatic and stealth
Okay that's fine
For my other 2 I did insight and investigation
I play a changeling rogue in one of the campaigns I’m involved in, and I took
-Deception
-Persuasion
-Sleight of Hand
-Stealth
for expertise skills, since that allows me to get myself into and talk myself out of trouble.
For proficiency I did perception, performance and a few others
Mhm
I’m choose celestial has my language
GREETINGS
Hello!!
First time I actually chatted here (I think) despite joining days ago
How do I roll for my hit points
Same, I originally joined because I wanted to know how to reasonably make a Drider character work after my DM said guards and law enforcement in general would be a constant problem given what they are.
I’m very invested in the concept, personally and want it to work
How do I roll for my hit points
Go to your class on DNDBeyond, and scroll until you find the section that lists your HP. For Rogue I think you roll 1d8+con??
I’d check it. I’ve forgotten
K
I hath cometh to learn ye old ancient art of fantasy roleplay
Sorry I was getting a drink
I love drinking
It good the other guy tried telling me but he said he forgotten so
So I’m unclear now
It’s in fact 1d8+con modifier per level
I got 10
1d10? Or you ended up getting 10 total? or do you mean you started with 10hp base?
10 total
Ah, good roll
pretty sure it's that, yea
I’m on a section saying starting equipment or purchase do I pass both sections of starting equipment?
I think modifiers are +1 per 2 points from 10, and -1 per 2 below 10 so 13 should be a +1 mod still
Actually yeah that makes more sense
So your Hit Points would presumably be a 9 then
Ok
I’m not sure what I’m doing so I’m trust y’all on this
Do I skip the entirety of the starting equipment page?
Well once you get into a group your DM will probably be inclined to help you with your character if you asked them
My DM had me choose what starting gear I wanted. There were a few options like picking between leather and Scale Mail armor. As a rogue I think generally you want light armor
^ DM should help you along and give guidance
There is 3 options on my page for like extra gear
-Rapier or short sword
-Short sword or short bow and arrows
-burglars pack or dungeoneer’s pack or explorers pack
You basically want to pick from the starting equipment your character has access to
I finished making my character and my max dex got me tripping
Lol
My max dex is 20
Now that's a rogue if I've seen one
Yeah sure!!
My rogue also ended up with 20 dex due to stat rolls :)
Ayyyy
Is there a specialty game store of any kind near you? Assuming you're at a university, is there a tabletop games club of some variety (the answer to that one is almost certainly "yes".) Both are public play options that are generally "we will make space for somebody if at all possible."
My local library has a teen program that has had either DnD or Pathfinder games running on and off for most of a decade.
Im not a university student though unfortunatly, im years away from that and we dont have any specialty game store
And, im very shy irl, i can only express my true emotions and attitude here in dc
Have you managed to find a group to join yet in #looking-for-players
Not really
Sad 🥲
Keep trying you’ll find one soon
Thank you
Yeah i cant do it, i cant find a guild nor have the confidence to contact and dm the Dungeon Master
Don't be afraid! They are literally searching for players, so why shouldn't they accept you? Worst they can say is no
I do many roleplay but never on Mic
Its my nightmare 😭, im really skeptical
A little practice and you'll get into it 😉
Hi
Don't worry, give it a few shots and you'll see it'll be no problem at all
Hi! Welcome to the server!
Thanks
Do you have any DnD related questions or need help with this server?
I had help with C.C to understand a bit
All I’m doing rn is looking for a fresh dnd to join
I mean, i could try
In that case it's best to hop over to #find-a-game
Sweet black coffee ☕
I made a post
Black labeled brewed coffee better
Look into it’s caffeine count
Try to keep an eye out for "newcomers-friendly" campaigns, they're most likely to accept newer players
Great, now all you need is a little patience
Kk
Ohhhh, thx for the reccomendation
Np
How did you get your class role?
Hm?
Tell me how you got new to dnd role and I’ll tell you how I got the dnd role, role
Hello everyone, I’m a new dnd player, I just got started going recently
Channels & Roles. Just pick which you want!!
How did he get new to dnd role
Idk aswell 😭
No clue. I didn't get that when I joined...
What?
Oh okay
Go to id:customize and scroll to the bottom. From there you can pck your role

I see it
Hello everyone! I'm new to D&D and i'm quite interested to jump in and learn the ropes, my main exposure so far is from Baldur’s Gate but I’m not sure if it’s enough for me to understand D&D fully :”D Also im not entirely sure where to begin. Alright
First step would probably be to read the Basic Rules. After that you should probably find a DM first (under #find-a-game ), because sometimes the DM might set some restrictions for their world.
Alright, then I assume I'm going to have to make a character based on the DM's rules?
Also yes, it is bg3 lol
There is also a link to videos for going from bg3 to DnD 5e, but I don't know the link anymore. @crude musk could you send it in rq or anyone knowing it?
Ohh that's really useful!

So how’s everyone doing?
Good and all
Good good
That’s great
How about you?
Doing well, hoping to find some inspiration for new characters here. My pfp is my first one
Ohhh, have you joined a party or guild?
Thats really cool, what kind of inspo you looking for?
Yes actually, one of my old highschool buddies came to me early last year and asked me if I’d be interested in it, I decided to give it a shot
Backstory and different races. I’m new to this whole thing. When my DM says anything to me I pretty much try to relate it to Skyrim😂
In his campaign there is a race based on Japan but most of the folks there are “argonians”😂
What class you going for?
Haha it happens don't worry, I like to relate my characters to my current hyper fixations as well
Right now I’m on a human rogue/fighter but idk enough about any of this to know what to ask.
My current character had a rough upbringing but it’s being fit into the campaign, would yall like to read it?
Hell yeahh
13 years before nosaj meets the group Nosaj grew up in a family that raised a near extinct species of wyvern and even learned how to communicate with the beast.
Eventually some elven race of a rival land found out about the beast and sent a small army to wipe out Nosaj’s home village.
The elves killed his family while forcing him to watch and stole the wyverns egg.
Elves started invading more of the surrounding land so Nosaj had to flea on a ship to a new land and a new life. On the ship he started having dreams of lovecraftian creatures and somehow learned their language and gained the ability to conjure spectral weapons out of nothing . He decided to stay working on ships for for food and shelter until he eventually got caught stealing and was dropped off in denimar
It should be noted that the land that my current campaign is a place called Denimar and he is about 24 years old
Its really good! So he got off from the ship when you started the campaign?
This kinda inspires me to make my own backstory lmao thanks
I’ll be honest the only reason I made it was because I wanted my character to have a reason for knowing both “draconian” and “Deep” languages
Hmmm if i'm being honest I'm not entirely familiar with those terms yet : "D i'm guessing those are the language skills you can acquire?
both just languages
Ohh alright
Yeah, apparently humans can speak 3 languages. Mine speaks English, draconian is the ability to talk to dragons and Deep language is lovecraftian things like Cthulhu
I see
Can you learn languages along the way or do you have to uh... be born with it? idk how to say it, like your default language' ig
There are downtime rules for it.
I have no idea tbh, my DM kinda walked me through the character creation process
Most characters will begin the game knowing at least 2 languages, sometimes 3. There are then things you can do along the way to learn additional ones.
But how/if those downtime rules are used in your campaign is something you should discuss with your DM.
There's also feats you could take that provide additional languages.
Right2 that's useful to know !
One thing I’ve always been curious about is can your character be in multiple campaigns at once. I’d like to level my character up a bit
You can sometimes
The closest you'd get to something like that is play in Adventurer's League ( #adventurers-league )
But at the same time, with the same stats or something? Nah that's not how the games designed
I didn’t figure so tbh.
They could, but mostly not. You'd need both DMs to agree and have them play in a similar world (especiall for campaigns; could perfectly work for one-shots)
Finishing a campaign at level 7 and joining another campaign at level 7 as the same Campaign can happen if they're both the same story and tone wtc
Ah ok. So what was y’all’s first time like? My character got drunk and ended up in the arms of a succubus character one of my friends made on the first night with the group
Well anyways I’ll be back in a bit gonna be out of service for an hour or two
its so hard to find groups that
are compatible with Philippine time
pain, most sessions are either too early in the morning, or late at night
Scheduling is perhaps the hardest thing about playing D&D…
i wanna get my friend group to play dnd but i really dont know how to setup anything or have any experience in playing dnd at all
Its hard to find groups as a Middle Age guy who hasn't played in a couple of decades, who has an early job and can't play late into the evening and is busy on the weekends.
Check the pinned messages for useful links and resources to help get you started.
is it better to just download a preset map (those exist right? for free?) and then play off that
could i just join a game and try and get some experience first
Hi
It's absolutely fine and fair to have a fiddle with a virtual tabletop like Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo before you get an actual game going, but it's not a game by itself.
Think of it like a theatre with nothing on. You'll be able to see how the sets work, but you need the actors for a show.
Check the Basic Rules, share a character in #character-discussion , and then carefully read #find-a-game . Good luck!
Hey there, I see this question popping all the time but answers varies a lots.
Will the new core rulebook of 2024 for 5e includes the existing sources extensions. (such as Tasha' cauldron .E,g) ?
Not in their entirities, no
Some spells, subclasses, and optional rules have been showcased as being rolled into the revised rulebooks, but you'll still need Tasha's and Xanathar's if you want to use everything in those books
I see - thanks a lot. As it will be "compatible" I guess that's great. I am a bit afraid of having a "revamp" existing rule from existing extensions and explaining to players, yeah but in the new 2024 it is how it is. What's your opinion on it ?
This isn't the channel for discussing the 2024 revised rulebooks, that would be #1026901431132885064
Yo
(Although I generally stay out of discussions of homebrew, so I won't be sharing any opinions on that)
Right - I guess I got my answer anyway - much appreciated 🙏
Yes?
What is going on?
This isn't a general discussion channel, please stay on topic
Ok

Assuming you have a willing group of people, I'm still a big fan of any of the starter boxes -- either the Starter Kit with the adventure Lost Mine of Phandelver, the Essentials Kit with Dragon of Icespire Peak, or the newest version with Dragons of Stormwreck Isle. All 3 include an abbreviated set of rules, a set of pre-made/pregenerated characters, and (I think) a set of dice so that you're in a position to have the person who's going to run spend a couple hours reading before the first time you get together, then sit down and try things out.
Hello! I’m new for the server and for the game, I do have my fathers old book that are mint condition but they’re outdated so I’m willing to learn

recently got a pc and was wondering, is there any way i can meet new players online who would be willing to try out dnd? would love to get into it but when i find people it never happens, nobody responds.
You can try going through the #find-a-game channels here or the LFG for roll20 and other Virtual Table Tops. Getting a constant game running can take time.
At first it can be worth looking into one-shots (short games), Adventure League and Westmarches. These are great ways to meet new people and try out playstyles without having to commit to really long term games. Through this you network and meet people you get along with, and can slowly make a group together.
It can take time to get together a compatible group, and it does take commitment some folk aren't willing to put into a game- you need to really try and commit to playing for several hours every week (or how ever often the gorup meets) regularily to keep a game running.
I also recommend trying out dnd adventures league, dnd beyond made a post explaining what it is and how it works here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league
The server even has different channels dedicated to AL. Including a list of events https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081

Hello! I looked through the “looking for” area and i read alot but i have no idea what im doing. I got a group of 5 players and were looking for a dm but i only see sections for looking for players. Any idea where i should post that?
Read the instructions carefully in #find-a-game. The prompt to type the bot commands is at the bottom of that channel.
I had started reading the DnD guide book the one with big monster thing on the cover. And want to get into it but I’m a newb and probably would have folks hold my hand.. so I have no clue
Hi
There are newbie friendly groups you can find. Everyone starts somewhere, and there are definitely groups out there where everyone starts off as beginners and near beginners.
Even if the other players are experienced, they won't mind at all teaching a new player how to play.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
As for where to get started, the above can be a good idea- if you've already checked out the Player's Handbook, you might have looked over some of these already.
If you’re a group of 5, I’d recommend each of you try DMing a pre-written adventure designed to be completed in a single session.
It will no doubt be faster. Mainly because there is a high demand of DMs.
Yeah. DMs Guild has some single packges that are built as 4-5 "mini adventures" under a single heading that might be a good place to start.
Or rotating chapters through stuff from one of the starter kits.

And choose which you wanna do by what the description says
There are videos breaking the rules down.
Also visual cheat sheets. It's hard to get around reading entirely, though.
D&D is a collaborative storytelling RPG game... and with that comes a bit of reading. You don't have to memorize everything - but knowing how your character sheet works, or certain features of your class, or how to make attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks... videos can certainly help but so can skimming through the rules so you can become familiar where to find things and understand the terminology and core mechanics.
