If you want free options, check out the basic rules or homebrew
Gday, I Have been playing DnD from a player pov in a few different campaigns, but looks like soon imma become the DM.
Can you give me some helpful advice for a start out DM?
?newdm
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the gameās lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Hereās a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnāt competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
the two bot posts above contain lots of information that should be helpful for you
Just saying hi! I used to play AD&D when i was at summer camp. My nephew's been having a hard time but was introduced to D&D at school and loved it! I'm looking to support his interest and get back into it

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful links for getting started, including a link to the free basic rules for 5e. I would definitely recommend giving those a read through. If this is your first time playing since AD&D, 5e is basically like a completely different game. Once you've taken a brief look at the rules, if you have any specific questions, feel free to ask them here. We're more than happy to help.
And if you want to talk to people about the older editions, #dnd-elder-editions is the place for those conversations. There are plenty of people there that'd be happy to discuss AD&D or anything else inbetween then and now
As a cleric, i get to either choose a mace or a greathammer, however it also gives me options for any simple weapons. Do i have to take a mace or greathammer if im only using a simple weapon?
are you using dnd beyond? and also what do you mean only using a simple weapon, do you want to use a quarterstaff or somethin?
so i assume what you're asking is the mace or greathammer option in equipment, and later on you can pick between a light crossbow and a simple weapon
Yes
if you're doing equipment and not gold, you have to pick, even if you arent or dont plan to use those weapons
Alright
As a cleric using Starting Equipment, you should get a mace or a warhammer as one item, and then either a crossbow or a simple weapon as a second item.
How do i level up my character?
Follow the instructions in the basic rules at the end of Step by Step character creation
so i just do campaigns?
basically, you kill things and you get exp
Or more specifically, what's your understanding of how D&D works?
and exp gives you level
This is not really an accurate summary though....
the most basic form of it
Kinda over simplistic to the point of being a bit misleading
well im overly simplistic as a person
im completely new
Okay, well I think maybe you've got the notion of why you make a character backwards
ik that its like a roleplaying game
You make a character as part of a campaign and then you play in that campaign
The DM will decide whether to use the Experience Points (XP) or Milestone method. PCs get experience points for defeating monsters and other criteria (such as roleplaying or puzzles). The Milestone method is at certain points of the story arc (think chapters) of the campaign.
i already made one
yeah, you're maybe jumping the gun
wna see it?
What determines how much spells i can prepare in a day?
so i need to join a campaign before making a character?
sometimes, its good to have a basic idea on how to make a character
and having one you can probably use for any scenario with some tweaking
Generally it's a better idea, yeah
You don't really make a character and then seek out campaigns to level them up
oh okay
Levelling up is something that happens as part of a campaign that represents your characters growth within the campaign
It's not really the goal
how do i join a campaign then?
looking in #find-a-game
You find someone who is running a game and looking for players, and ask to join their campaign
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Which class are you? Each class has different rules for how many spells they can prepare, listed in their individual spellcasting rules
Cleric
Then, just like it says in the cleric spellcasting rules, you can prepare a number of spells equal to your cleric level + your wisdom modifier
okay
thanks
Is a quarterstaff a martial weapon?
It's a simple weapon
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
Bruh. My DM just gave me a bag of holding that contains 29000 gold that refills after being emptied like wtf š¤£
We're level 3 and haven't even had our session 0 yet. I'm scared of how brutal the campaign is gonna be.
First time playing. Is this common? š¤£
No, that's OP.
I'm scared that the campaign is gonna be that brutal that I'll need it all lmao
That's a red flag if your DM gave you that before a session 0.
This is stuff he added to my character today
ou have a neclace....a milky silver jewel. We will talk about this item more during game play
You have the feat called keen mind. Raise your intelligence score by 1. You always know how many hours you have before sunset or rise, aware of time always.
You have a photographic memory up to 30 days. You remember everything you hear or see.
As a young girl you lived in the Svalich woods with your Druid clan.
You have a bag of holding that is like no other bag of holding. In it is 29000 gold. When it empties it automatically refills through a spell that was cast on it. You are rich, your decades of adventuring has been very profitable.
If you have any questions or concerns let me know.
I am playing a Fallen Aasimar Circle of Stars Druid
Curse of Strahd Campaign
I think we set my Aasimar to just before the halfway point in her lifespan...?
I don't think so...?
Oh lawd. I better not show up on MrRipper's "worst campaign" stories š
I suggested less adventuring time due to level 3 and just more luck with my finds.
Sound reasonable?
Also suggested less gold, like 10-15k, which according to y'all is probably still a lot, but still like half of what he initially wanted to give.
Hoping he doesn't get too "eh" about it š
If your DM is giving you that much gold, its probably because the gold will not matter in the actual campaign. Even if you had 1 million gold, it wouldn't matter if there was no shops to spend it at or NPCs to barter with. I don't know anything about Curse of Strahd, so I don't know if that is the case here, but that's my best guess as to what is going on.
A normal amount of gold for adventurers to have at level 3 would be like a few hundred at most
i mean, money clearly wont matter if you have 29k that automatically refills
since thats literally infinite money
you could afford literally anything
I meant āmoney will not matterā in the exact opposite way
I'm just a bit worried now ;-;
Itās certainly an extremely strange thing for the Dm to do, at the very least
Hello there
aw
Well, I'll probably leave if I think stuff is getting too weird.
If you have questions or comments about moderation policy, you should post them in #moderator-support
Do you need to download any ting ekstra to play online?
It depends on what the DM has set up for their online game.
VTTs (virtual tabletop) like owlbear.rodeo, Roll20, and Foundry use web browsers.
usually you dont need to download anything
its mostly browser websites
For my table I use Discord (for text and voice chat), Foundry for VTT, and D&D Beyond for character sheets and digital books.
What do you mean "beginner stats"?

Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you donāt have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
i am not shor were to finde it
Just remember, your DM might only allow a specific method for picking your ability scores, so be prepared to swap them around if they do
i will keep that in mind

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
thanke you
i have question there was a rule about how your character looked and it cant be an ai drawing is a character look must be there?
where is this rule
i dont know i remember reading it 1 sec let me look
is this a discord rule or in dndbeyond thing
i remember reading a rule about it when i join this server
let me look
maybe i read it wrong idk
The server rules and the rules of D&D are different things
so the rule says
copy pasted
Any content created, in whole or in part, through the use of artificial intelligence is not permitted. This primarily includes text and images produced or edited by AI, and it applies whether the AI was prompted by human input or not. Advertisements related to these programs or their creations is also prohibited.
so you cant use ai drawings
do i must have my character drawing
what's asking for it
a person, a character creator, what
You're confusing server rules and D&D rules, they're not the same thing
We do not allow AI generated conten on this server
That is not however a rule for D&D the game
yeah you cant go into art and be like "look at my character" and post ai generated images
but you could use AI for a character in like, dndbeyond
not saying it'd be great, but its an option i guess idk
okey i got that
my second question is does my character must have appearance drawing on my sheet (i am sorry if i am giving a hard time my first language is not english)
no, you do not need to have a picture of your character
You can just describe them with words
ok thanks now i am going to read basic rules
yeah you can just describe them if you want
You can use the custom character builder at HeroForge and take a screencap.
heroforge is JUST what i was about to suggest
since you can customize things there and mostly get what you were going for
oh okey thank youu
love Heroforge to make characters, not need to buy the minis for digital play
only downside i can say about heroforge is that you have to take a screenshot if you dont wanna pay
even then just, pay or screenshot
very good site
@weak nimbus The attack bonus is the total bonus for that attack to your d20 roll
That bonus depends on what the attack is
For example, if it's an attack with a sword that uses strength that you're proficient in, it'll be your strength bonus plus your proficiency bonus
right.
However, if it's an attack with a bow that uses dexterity and you're not proficient with it, it'll just be your dexterity bonus
Is initiative bonus dex modifier + profiency bonus?

Sorry, that's a command to summon that bot. Check out the links above! The best place to start is the basic rules.
Thank you. I got interested when a friend told me about DND.
Yeah hero forge is great. I bought the 3d print file and my friend printed all our characters
Hi, uhh... I am a bit confused about looking for player, if the post said DnD Beyond for character sheet. Does that mean we make our character from the website? And that you need to purchase the materials to make the character? Lets say i wanted to make a sorcerer with a clockwork soul. Thank you
Ask the person who made the post
Ok
How do I change my role?
Thanks
Hiii Iām new to dnd I made a character but I have no clue if it makes sense or if I did it right
Hey everyone! I'm not 100% new to D&D, but I love creating characters and giving them stories for both individual modules or just because I wanted to make an interesting character (regardless of whether they are optimal or not).
Welcome! Feel free to share your character in #character-discussion if you want someone to double-check everything.
Oooh! What's been your favorite character so far?
I would submit one #750812887697588356 post for the both of you.
The DM will find the other players; that's not something you need to deal with.
My favorite's actually been a Human (Not Variant) Wizard with a low Constitution (weak/frail body) who wants to use magic to try and extend his life/improve his body's natural fagility. I had him in mind for a Curse of Strahd Campaign.
Sounds fun!
Where should I put more points into: hit points or proficiency saving throw
By "points", did you mean customizing your ability scores through point buy?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#VariantCustomizingAbilityScores
If so, those points can only be spent to increase ability scores.
I am doing it rolling the dice
Then what points are you referring to?
ability scores
Are you trying to ask which ability scores to prioritize?
What class did you choose?
Warlock with variant human. And I am just playing around with character creation
I'd generally recommend them in this order, then:
- CHA
- CON
- DEX
- WIS
- INT
- STR
Unless you're going for Pact of the Blade, I suppose.
What's that?
At level 3, every warlock gets to choose a Pact Boon.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#PactBoon-389
When Warlocks hit 3rd level, they can choose a special pact. Pact of the Tome, Pact of the Chain, and Pact of the Blade are the ones in the PHB.
One option is Pact of the Blade, which improves your weapon usage.
And since weapons primarily depend on STR or DEX, you may want to set one of those higher if that's where you're headed.
The only real exceptions are for Hexblade Warlocks, who use their Charisma as the weapon attack modifier.
thanks heaps
can anyone help me make a character but like explain it to me in really simple terms? ive played a campaign bfor but i didnt make my character properly at all and i get really confused when i make characters
or like just help me make one lol
How is best to find a group to play with in my location? North West England. I'm realtively new to the game
Check #find-a-game for online games.
In person: nerd shops, board game cafƩs, university societies possibly. If there's a subreddit for your area it might be worth a search, ditto Facebook groups and the like.
Where exactly are you getting stuck? Is there a specific part of the character sheet you have questions about?
And have you read the basic rules yourself (ie not a summary, not āi heardā)? They are available in the pinned messages here and provide the guidance you seek
hello
Hey guys I need help building a character could anyone help?
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
Yes
Is there something you're having trouble understanding?
So my DM is putting us in a campaign that is going to end with us being at level 20 when we fight the BBEG and I just need to know if the character that I want to play would be good
What character do you want to play?
So the race would be the rabbit people sorry my brain is going blank on the actual name of the race, but I wanted to be a phantom rogue multiclass into a way of the shadow monk
Don't worry about what would be good but rather what you would have fun with.
Also, don't worry about multiclassing when you're starting off. Just learn one class at the time.
Thatās the thing my DM told us that we need to have at least one or more multi classes for this campaign
And I just needed to know if the synergy for that would be good or not
In that case, Iād recommend asking in #optimization.
hey, i have never played dnd before, but i want to play really bad but I don't know how to, espeacially online, could someone enlighten me please?

thank you
im not sure how practically any of it works, idk armor class, weapons, stats, race stuff, anything really. idk how i managed the last campaign
Check out this post (#dnd-newcomers message), it's got links the Basic Rules and helpful videos.
thats part of my problem, idk if its my adhd but i dont have the patience to read all the rules
i mean i can try again but idk ill came back if i need help later
You don't have to. Skim through the sections on race and class, pick a pair that sound fun, share your idea in #character-discussion .
ok i do know what race and class i need
There is nothing wrong with reading it at your own pace. Its not a test or a race
Letās start at the beginning, then. Have you picked a race, class, and background?
shes gonna be a druid tabaxi but thats about it
sorry if im on and off im kknda busy
Hey. I've been playing DnD for years in person but i lost my campaign by moving. I really want to play online but i dont understand how it would work without maps and everything.. I made my character but Im trying to understand how it works first before trying to join a group..
in a nutshell, you use any number of online maps and character sheet options
I dont understand what you mean š
Do I need to find maps ?
im newish and do not know the fancy command that spits out the info XD
i wanna say dndbeyond is the goto one but could be wrong. theres also other sites. they are more or less jsut digital maps, and stuff

dndbeyond is being really annoying though bc i need to make my character but shes a tabaxi and i cant pay to get stuff for tabaxi
Yeahhhh thats what i struggle with..
let us know if you find the one secret trick for getting a (good) group lol
Great! Next step would be to figure out your ability scores. š

Will do loll If anyone answers me some day
Helloš Im sorta confused as to how to start dm'ing. I wanna try running a one shot with a party of brand new players but don't really no where to start.
Not only with getting said players, but kinda dming as a whole.
Have you played a game before
yup, played as a player for 3 years now.
is there a specific ability i shouldnput more points into for my race and class?
The best place to start is with a pre-written adventure
That does alot of the heavy lifting for a new dm
For a druid, youāll want WIS as your highest score. Iād follow that with CON, then DEX.
The rest you can put in any order. A lot of people tend to put STR as the lowest.
Hello!
do i have any race or class bonusus?
You typically get racial bonuses for two of your ability scores.
You chose your race, class, and ability scores?
yes
Yeah, make sure you add the ability score increase from your race.
And make sure you write down your ability score modifiers, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
me and my friends are completely new to dnd and are looking to find a dm to play with and also teach us how to play with.
ik now inneed to knownhownto background, spells, and equipment

Background is just a matter of choosing one:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/personality-and-background#Backgrounds
For spells, youāll start with 2 cantrips, and you can prepare a number of 1st-level spells equal to your WIS mod + your druid level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spells#DruidSpells
And for equipment, check your class and background. Theyāve each got a list of items you can start with.
I'm sorry I'm kinda lost what do I do
We got some useful info and links in the pinned messages here in the channel. But if you have any specific questions you can ask here (or find an appropriate channel with our #channel-guide)

wait
so if i dont have a wis mod i only get one spell?
bc im level one
Like I said before, for a druid, you want WIS as your highest score.
I made a guide here (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view) for finding folks to game with if you want to expand your search beyond the server.
my wisdom score is 15
Hi! Iāve been playing just over a month. Iām still just a wee lad in D&D.
So thatās a WIS mod of +2.
Thanks appreciate it!
Meaning you can prepare three 1st-level spells.
You probably want to double-check that youāve written down your modifiers correctly.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Just find your score on the left, and write down the number on the right.
For all six abilities.
ok what wouls good spells be?
With three choices, Iād pick something for offense (like Ice Knife), something for defense (like Cure Wounds), and something for utility (like Entangle).
wait how do i tell how many spell slots i have? would it be 3 bc i have 3 spells?
You can change your leveled spells after a long rest, so itās not the most critical decision.
The Druid Table shows how many spell slots you have:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/druid#TheDruidTable
You have two 1st-level spell slots to start.
mechanics wise, it seems pretty difficult to make a character wrong enough that you literally wouldnt be able to play. and a LOT of the character creation comes down to what you think sounds cool and looking for the class and subclass that meet that fantasy
the part where rules get sticky is when you start playing the game, but you dont really NEED to know the exact rules, you can sorta just say what you want to do and the DM hopefully can give feedback right away if you are allowed, and what to roll for it
i filled out a character sheet as much as i could can i like dm it to you or something so you can help me finish it? lol i don't understand parts of it that i feel like i should
peace to everyone
Just direct me to the d&d 3.5 group please š
Although really I'm too much of a nerd to really care about which edition š
Wut
Oh you just started that's cool. The last link I posted on my Discord server could also help you out as well:
https://youtu.be/0TsicWGho7c?si=p09yOxRAbgAHtW3i
Oh thx
You're welcome, actually I was just watching the video I just shared with you which motivated me to actually find an official Discord server for d&d.
So Iām new to dnd but Iāve heard of home brew, does that include making your own monsters? And I want to dm some day and would it make the players uncomfortable if I added to many of my own unfamiliar creations?
Place your question in the d&d discussion channel
Oh sorry
Wait what
A DM can hombrew monsters, but a new DM may have trouble balancing the stats, so it may be more easy to use an existing monster and reflavor
am i able to send my character sheet/s to anyone to have them look through it and help me for me
what is up guys

so i want to play dnd but how exactly do you play on computer i require friends
You can find online games by checking out #find-a-game
how hard is it to find regular games with find a game allot of 1 time deals ? or people willing to play a while ?
roll20 .net is the big way to play online. its most commonly used for the maps, dice, and character sheets, with communication (text and voice) being done through your own discord server seperate from roll20
wait theres an online dnd
a few ways to play dnd online
my biggest problem is finding groups that want to play together for a while
you can play D&D online with other people, the same way you would play it with other people in person. it offers several benefits, mostly being more dynamic character sheets (no need to cram a bunch of stuff in your Features tab if it can expand) and distance not being an issue
how do i do this
I would go to the tab labled 'Characters (previously vault)' and make a character there, selecting the 'dnd 5e' option. I would use the charactermancer option there to get a feel for the website, then make a new character labled 'edit sheet directly'.
leaving that page open, I would go the the dnd basic rules (in the pinned messages here) and read through those and make your character as you read it.
can i name my character dallas
yeah, you can name your character literally whatever you want. its just a text box (i think you can even put emojis in it, but i dont think thats very useful here)
how do i send the pictures?
i choose human
just follow through with the options there. I would, again, read through the basic rules so you actually know what the options mean.
if you learn better through video, I would also reccomend the Handbooker Helper series on youtube, made by the Critical Role channel.
If you want to do it as a picture, youāll have to upload it somewhere else first (like Imgur or wherever) and then share that link instead.

After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
ah
yes, there is. those are called ability scores, and they are on a scale of 1-20. the scale is based off of this: 10 is your average guy, 18 is the peak a normal human can achieve, and 20 is superhuman. reference the thing above for standard array, which is the one I would reccomend starting with.
im gonna do standard
ok i uploaded it
one last thing: the ruleset looks giant - because it is. It covers the whole of the game, but don't get overwhelmed. it is organized really well, so just read through it in order. here is what I believe to be the best way to learn the rules: read through it once, make a character as you go through the rules again, and then find someone to play with - the best way to learn is by doing.
Again, the rules are giant, but they are so worth it to learn. I have been actively playing for well over 3 years, and it hasn't gotten old yet. You can always look back at the ruleset - its not looked down upon at all within the community. I've been playing for years and still look back through it for clarification sometimes.
its not just roll d20 and kill enemy?
not at all. DND is really complex, and is more than just combat.
think of it this way: dnd is taking the generic make-believe, daydreaming, and fantasy concepts and putting them in a system where you can play it with other people. its built in a way so that most of the things you can think of can be done in some way or another.
combat is turned based, and there is a lot of ways to do it. its actually the most complex part of the game, but I believe its the 'sweet-spot' of DND, where roleplay, game mechanics, and teamwork all come together.
out of combat is much less complex.
the basic flow is fairly straight forward: you describe something you want your character to do (I try to check for traps down the hallway floor), and the dungeon master (often shorted to 'DM', the person who runs the game for other players) describes the results of the action. If the action is more complex, the DM may ask for a 'skill check', which is where your ability scores come in. they correspond to various skills, or specifications (acrobatics, insight, intimidation, and so on). in the aforementioned traps scenario, the DM would ask you to make an 'insight check'. you would then roll a d20 and add your wisdom modifier (explained in the basic rules, and wisdom is the ability that applies to insight) to the roll. if the total is equal to or higher that the 'difficulty class' (often shortened to 'DC', or the number you need to total higher than to pass the check), you succeed. if the total is lower, you fail the check. typically, bigger number = better.
Finishing the rulebook is taking me an eternity
You don't need to finish the rulebook
It's a reference book, you're supposed to look up the information you need as and when you need it
The more you do this, the less often you'll need to do it as you'll just start remembering it
Oh..
If you are talking about the basic rules:
The entirety of Part 1 (Chapters 1-6), you'll only need to follow through once for character creation, and then you will probably just return to your own class/race features for details.
Part 2 is the only bit you really need to learn.
Part 3 only matters if you are a spellcaster: if you are, then only your classes' spells matter, and only matter in detail for spells you can cast
Part 4 is only for Dungeon Masters and you don't need to worry about it too much š
The spells? Even if i like em, it seems too confusing..
Do you want to make a spellcaster character?
Best advice would be not to be a spellcaster then: and there's nothing wrong with that.
If you want to read a lot then sure a druid (for example) is a great choice. But if you don't, then you don't have to be a druid. If you were dreaming of being a druid but are put off by the amount of spells, then check out a Ranger or Oath of Ancients Paladin, which are similarly nature-themed but have far far fewer spells. Or just stick with martials that have no spells. It's all valid!
would anyone like to look over a character sheet for me? im newer and just wanna make sure i set up everything correctly
#character-discussion is a good place to get feedback on character sheets
I wanted, but the number of spells, the using mechanism is just overwhelming
Okay, you don't need to worry about the number of spells. When you make a character they'll have access to a limited number. That number grows as you level up, so you'll ease into it
As for using spells:
Known and Prepared Spells
Spell Slots
Casting a Spell
That's kinda all you need to know
Oh..
You don't need to ping me immediately after my message, especially just to say "Oh.."
Sorry
s'all good
Anyways wat does the versatile thing mean wen using a wep?
Have you looked at the weapon section of the rules?
All the properties are detailed there
I have but i have trouble understanding it
What part of the description are you struggling with?
(also, again with the pinging)
A damage value in parentheses appears with the
propertyāthe damage when the weapon is used with two
hands to make a melee attack.
That's just the text, what part of that is unclear?
Have you read how attacks work?
There's no point looking at weapons without understanding how you make an attack
I see, sorry, havent read how attacks work. Since itz in chapter 9 and weapons r on chapter 5.
The book isn't intended to be read in order
Oh... So in which order should i read it?
There's no prescribed order
If you want to make a character, read the section on character creation
If you want to learn how combat works, read the section on combat
Hello everyone, I'm new to DND community.I downloaded "DND beyond" but i don't really know what to do next- please give me some advice=P
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Give the basic rules a read, then consider a few character concepts. Maybe make a practice character sheet, then start looking for people to play with!
I will do that! Thanks^^
Hiya
Welcome!

Welcome! The bot post above has lots of helpful links to get you started. Once you've taken a look at the rules, let us know if you have any specific questions! We're more than happy to help
Can warforged be used to store souls?
I don't believe that their original lore says they can, but that might change depending on the setting that your DM is running.
Since my idea is play a cog bard based on freddy fazbear
I would recommend running this idea by your DM to see if they're willing to accommodate.
I think this is less rule of cool and more of rule of funny
That's not really a question any of us can answer. Souls are not a physical object or a force that can be magically contained by anything within the normal rules of the game, so "storing" one in a warforged doesn't really make sense on a fundimental level. Also, warforged are humanoid creatures, so in regards to game mechanics that do refer to the soul, such as revivify or magic jar and such, warforged are treated exactly the same as any human or elf (etc) would be.
And most certainly, this is beyond the scope of #dnd-newcomers

Hello, not a newcomer, but I am bit out of the loop, did something new come out in the last few months?
I have seen players discuss new builds in the optimization channel per updated rules so I am confused.
I am having bit of a difficulty figuring out what exactly it is when I search the web
It's possible that they were referring to the upcoming update of the player's handbook, which will be giving several meaningful updates to many of the classes. If you're looking for more info, check it out here: #1026901431132885064
Ah! so that could be it! i did see it was upcoming, but I did not see official release available yet, so I was confused!
I even searched for announcement section but nothing came up!
Many thanks!
I may have missed it while reading, but if I'm using a hand crossbow am I able to attack as my action , reload, and attack again as a bonus? Or does that not happen until lvl 5?
If you have the Crossbow Expert feat, yes
Otherwise, you would only be able to make a single attack with no bonus action attack regardless of level
Because the Loading property overrides Extra attack
Hi. I would love to join a group, played DnD table but no longer have the people to meet up. Let me know, thanks!
Check #find-a-game
So i am trying to be player and join a game how do i go about that? What do i type and stuff for that?

Which race is the best for a rogue?
Race and class often work independently of eachother:
So Goblin Rogue = Elf Rogue = Human Rogue, etc
Alright. I though usually race gave certain bonuses that could benefit your class?
idk. I am very new though
They can for sure! But it isn't required
Ah. Alright.
if you dont play XYZ Race (gives dex) Rogue you aren't going to be super underpowered
š
To play with people, will I need a board, or will the DM have their own setup?
it varies from table to table, If you're online; they might have you make a Roll20 account or sumn. Some tables dont run a board at all.
Alright.
And how long do sessions usually take?
also varies, 2-3 I would say, but they can span up to 8 hours sometimes
Before the Tashaās book came out, yes. But that book added a rule where you can change what stat boosts your race gives you
What is a "one-shot"?
A complete story that takes one session to play through.
Are those hosted often? It sounds like a great way to learn the game.
I'd say they're pretty common.
Hello I just got dnd this morning
As in, you got the starter set?
No I just went for the essentials kit because i thought it would be better to make my own characters
I'm currently in the middle of trying to create a character
If someone could help me with attacks and spellcasting that would be amazing
how do i get to circle of the shepherd in my dnd beyond class options? it only shows circle of the land
The free Basic Rules include one subclass for each class (except Artificer).
For druids, thatās Circle of the Land.
You need to either own Xanathar's Guide to Everything or individually buy that sub-class from that book.
Circle of the Shepherd can be found in Xanatharās Guide to Everything.

thank you š
If anyone has any questions about DND I will help you the best I can. I don't know much about the books, subclasses, and feats, but I can help with character sheets and character creation. I'm also willing to just discuss character ideas
I am completely new, no knowledge whatsoever (other than the occasional YouTube videos from here to there), but I really want to start learning and playing the game. I would also like to play with my friends who also do not have any knowledge about the game. How should I start doing this, any video recommendations or online information would be very helpful. Also, seeming as I am the one asking my friends to play, I would likely be the Dungeon Master. Any tips on being a dungeon master (for someone who has never played before) would be great too. I had an idea to start playing online first to learn better but i dont even know how to do it or where to start, so any tips, recommendations of videos/information, or anyone willing to teach me, would be extremely helpful

Welcome
Thanks old player just newish to 5e
#dnd-elder-editions for pre-5E editions
Yea older editions are what im used too but it's not like they are getting new content or new players so sadly having to bite the bullet and learn again
There are people still playing older editions.
I just don't want to end up being one of those people who refuse to try the new stuff
I'm already bad at that already on allot of other things

What class are you playing?
Hello everyone. I just joined the server. My knowledge of D&D is very limited. Any pointers would be very appreciated.
Check out the links above.
Where can I find the Service Awards 50th Anniversary PDF?
I don't understand. Where did you see a reference to this PDF?
that's a question better suited to our AL channels; #adventurers-league
is anyone available to help me understand the character builder?? specifically somestuff for class features
with homebrew stuff
thanks ill ask there
Btw.. I heard a session takes 3-4 hours to play, but ive got like.. 30 mins of screen time per day, how can i play? šæ
Any tips on finding a dnd group? I've been looking but haven't had any luck.
You can play by post which doesn't require being present for a continuous session. Instead you respond to posts when you can
Oh, where can I find a game like that tho?
Look for games advertised as "play by post" or PBP
Or you can go to the D&D Beyond forums, there's an entire play by post section there
How do i get into a campaign?
Any DMs have a place online where you get maps/3d terrain minis
Check with the folks in #dnd-minis
Read (carefully) #find-a-game as it has useful info on how to find a game and important instructions on how to use the Looking For Game channels we have here on this server.
For DM advice, Iād start by reading these guides (https://howtogm.guide) and watching the first handful of videos in Matt Colvilleās āRunning the Gameā series on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_).
Um hi I'm making a character but need extra help so my idea is a giant human warlock pirate king but maybe one of you could help me
āGiantā is a specific thing in D&D, and theyāre way too big and powerful to be played by a player without breaking the game.
However there is a playable race called a Goliath, and thatās like a big, powerful bigger than a normal person.
So a goliath warlock is supported by the game rules. As far as being a pirate king, thatās up to your dungeon master. And indeed it is possible that your DM doesnāt allow goliaths for whatever reason in their world. Ask your dm before building the character.
Nothing prevents your character from being very tall, but it wonāt gain you any mechanical benefit (except for niche circumstances involving upwards reach). Iād still keep it somewhat grounded, so donāt make your character like 10ā tall or something haha.
Iām gonna guess your character is inspired by One Piece. In that case, you can be a goliath as theyāre the ābig and tallā race as Bruce said. Human works as well, perhaps do variant human so you can get the Tough feat to emulate the brawn typically associated with your larger size.
Another option is to take a class that can actually increase in size (from medium to large) such as Rune Knight Fighter or Giant Barbarian. These transformations are temporary, just keep in mind.
As for āpirate kingā keep in mind that confers a certain level of power thatās usually outside of the scope of a level 1 character. It might be more appropriate to be an aspiring pirate king. To accomplish this, Iād recommend the sailor, criminal, marine, or pirate (variant of sailor background)
Im looking for one as Well
Check #find-a-game
Welcome! š I hope you learn lots.
Honestly i wanna listen to a group of people playing dnd before i jump into it š
If anyone doesnt mind me being a lurker for one game lmk
Let me introduce myself. My name is Drake and Iām a huge fan of dnd. I play at my local library and am welcome to all kinds of people. Iām also looking for a clan to join. My character is pizza dude and he just wants to make pizza ALL THE TIME. So if anyone just wants to me to join.
Sounds like an interesting character
Hahahaha yeah my buddy kinda gave me the idea for it
If you don't mind me asking, which library do you play at?
@late zealot I play at the witmore library in Utah
Ok, if I'm ever in the area i might come by.
Please be careful with sharing of information that can be used to identify you in real life (see User Safety in our server rules)
hiiee, im very new to d&d and could use some videos to get learning

You've asked at least twice yesterday and we keep telling you to check #find-a-game
There's a group on Spotify who did a good job with progression from new players. The story is also quite interesting as well. The podcast is called tales from the stinky dragon and I recommend to any new players/ DMs who want to listen to a campaign to get a feel for the game.

@true musk thanks, I made a looking for game post early this morning, fingers crossed.
For players, I recommend a more active approach as there are more players than DMs out there.
Given that, DMs are usually the ones who just need to make a post and wait for players to come to them.
@true musk Oh yeah, I've been searching for a game in the DM looking for players as well as r/lfg. Just haven't had any luck. I'll find a game that I could join but then it's fills up within minutes or they never respond to my application. It almost feels like I'm job hunting.

@true musk sweet thank you
Hey! I'm new to D&D and wanted to know if it was possible to play the game without the board? I have the dice but nothing else. No idea how to play š
Yeah
Itās called theater of the mind
Thereās no specific board needed. Different companies make a variety of maps with different levels of complexity but those are luxuries not necessities
I still would invest in a board purely just for battle, though
Theatre of the mind is fine for many aspects of the game but combat will be difficult bc it is impossible to manage AOEās and terrain and such without some visual aid
This doesnt mean you need to spend a bunch of money, anything with a 1x1 inch grid pattern is fine, like graph paper
The back of gift wrapping usually has a perfect grid, and is cheap
so basically graph paper?
yeah i have no idea how to play either- where would i find that in here?

ig i just have to wait for one that will work
Dnd has never been a āpickupā game, it requires patience and effort to find a table
Given the nature of dnd, usually having a group made up of 1 DM and 3-6 players, players need to take a proactive approach when trying to form a group.
Thankfully there are some options that can allow you to play while searching for a group.
The ones I recommend are:
- D&D games hosted at your local game shop and local library.
- Virtual D&D Weekends. The server lists them in the Events section of this server. Link is also here: https://yawningportal.dnd.wizards.com/virtual-dd-weekends-march-2024/
- D&D Adventurers League (AL). This link explains, what it is, how it works, and other useful resources: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1676-what-is-adventurers-league

Does anyone know how to fill out the cp,sp,ep,gp and pp section
On the character sheet
??
In equipment
Yup
Oh I don't got one I got the game yesterday
That's a lotta money
Just leave it with the basic 10gp or whatever it is for now then
Oh ok
Discuss anything 'extra' with GMs LOL
It sure was, but he was a scorned prince
Starting gold (if any) will generally come from your background.
I'll just leave it at 30 gp then
Did your class or background say to add 30gp?
If you donāt have a DM yet, Iād recommend sticking with the basic starting equipment from your class and background.
It depends on background tbh
Noble gets an extra 100gp or something
Compared to Comfortable
Nah, theirs is like 20 or 25.
Wretched starts with 0gp I believe
Hm okay so I got 15 from my bard entertainer
I donāt think any give as high as 30.
You usually come out ahead by taking the equipment, though.
True dat
And again, if you donāt have a DM, Iād stick with the basic equipment.
Take equipment, gold is so easy to earn anyway
Even my 'poor' dude who started at 1gp now has like 3000
Gets a solid 100/300 per quest
lol I guess it is easy to get gp
Depends on the GM tbh
So like some Game masters like grinding for gold?
I might be ready for my first ever session tomorrow with the rate I'm making my character
Also is 16 charisma normal from rolls
The problem with 5E is that there isn't much to spend gold on.
It varies from campaign to campaign.
Generally speaking your starting equipment from your class and background provide more than enough to be prepared for an adventure.
If you don't have a DM yet, better to stick to standard array or point buy, as a GM will not accept rolls they did not witness.
So I should scrap the strength through charisma?
What class?
Bard
Cha is a priority
Generally when it comes to stats, you should prioritize abilities to a strengths of a class.
Here can i dm someone the photo of stats
Just post the numbers.
Ok the numbers are 10 strength 14 dexterity 13 constitution 9 intelligence 12 wisdom and 16 charisma
A common pitfall new players fall into is the worry of having negative stats.
However, given that dnd is a cooperative game, your party members will cover you weaknesses.
So my party could cover my weakest stats and I can do the same to theirs
For the most part.
Did you roll or use point buy?
I used roll
DM witnessed it?
No I don't have a dm so should I restart
Yes. Use Point Buy.
A barbarian will not match your Charisma, but your character won't match a barbarian's strength.
Oh ok
Ok
So I'll try to get into a session as soon as I figure out the character sheet
Can I dm you for help on character sheet or do it here
Here.
Ok so I just got out a fresh sheet what do I do first
No tag stats found.
Bot post above highlights standard array and point buy.

It will probably be easier for if you build your character on dnd beyond.
If you prefer pencil and paper, check out the handbooker Helper videos. They're short videos and very insightful.
Use standard array or point buy.
I'll check it out
Ok but before I find GM or after
Use either while searching for a GM.
The reason why rolled stats are not accepted by a GM is because they need to verify the stats rolled were actually rolled and not just made up.
Ooo itās my favorite swine once more
lol
It's also because rolled stats can effect the balance of adventures.
Rolled stats can greatly change the difficulty of combat encounters for identical character builds.
So unbalanced stats could make the game boring?
What site do you (DMs) find to be the easiest to use?
Easiest to use for what, specifically?
#dm-discussion or #third-party would be a better place to ask about virtual tabletops (VTTs).
Not āfor whoā. For what?
The tools you choose should help you address a specific need.
Youāve said you need something simple. Iām guessing now that youāre also looking for a way to display maps.
Are you only looking for maps, or for something with additional non-map features?
Are you looking only for free options, or are you willing to spend money if it solves your problem or upgrades the experience?
Are you looking to display it on a single screen, or do you want your players to have access?
Thereās no right or wrong answers to any of these. The tools available for playing D&D are varied because the groups playing D&D are varied.
Welcome! If youāre looking for a group to join, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Thank you!
I'm looking for someone to help me get into a campaign or just start something fun that will help me get into d&d. I have issues making friends and it's really hard to reach out so any feedback or help would be greatly appreciated thanks everyone.
Hey! How friendly are people to newcomers? I can imagine it depends on the group or person but how easy is it to start playing the game and everything?
Maps mainly, maybe with a dice roll or something
In general youād have to ask a DM whose game you want to join, or check their advertisement in #find-a-game or equivalent items on other sites/irl.
In my opinion itās good manners to at least have skimmed through the basic rules, paying attention to Parts 1 through 3 which deal with character creation. After that, have a character concept ready but not complete so you can further tailor them to the DMās game.
hi im new to rpg/DnD but i like starwars and rolplay does anybody need players?

Hey anyone wanna talk about dnd im completely new to playing dnd but Iāve watched a little here and there and would like to talk about it with anyone willing to share info before anyone does comment on this I am what people would call kinda a toxic player my whole thing is that I want to have fun at all cost meaning I am willing to make builds that make no sense and have no actual balance while making jokes and hassling the dm keep in mind I donāt mean making overpowered character sheets or anything like that I just mean like I could put together anything at the start of the game and it could be the worst thing in the world but for some reason it makes sense to me Iām just looking to have fun while playing and having a dm that thinks things like this are funny would be nice since right now Iām new and just want to have fun while playing but when I get into it Iāll probably tone that down thank you for those that have read this
nothing toxic about making fun builds that are silly, just don't hassle the DM too much š
It's all about what you prefer, i also like to make sub-optimal builds if it allows for more interesting RP moments.
I appreciate you telling me this I thought it was just toxic and I didnāt really want to be a toxic player Iām glad to know itās all in good fun as long as you donāt go overboard
Check what the expectations of the other players are
My friend is playing a Artificier Goblin with 8 intelligence (The Classes Main Stat) and it's so fun haha.
With some groups, an extremely weak joke character will be fine
Other more serious groups will have issues with it
This is something to consider too.
Just discuss it on session 0.
Thank you for letting me know I just donāt want to ruin a session Iāll keep in mind to discuss and consider how the dm and other players might feel
Don't worry about making a sub-optimal build if the character is serious, just cuz it's a serious campaign doesn't mean you need to play that DEX/STR Rogue Build that has all the stacked options.
You can STILL play a "Weird Build" without it being comedic.
Thank you for telling me all of this I really do appreciate it
What I mean is that some tables may complain if you say, made a 8 Dex rogue
That's fair. I think that's wack, but it's fair.
Welcome! š

Hello
how can i make a fight more interesting as a dm
if i were to buy a book on dnd beyond what book should i buy first?
I'd say the Players Handbook if you're gunna play. And if youp lan to DM get the PHB and DM Guide as the next purchase.
but if you're a player getting the PHB is 100% i'd say.
The folks in #dm-discussion can give you some tips!
How do people play dnd online? What platforms are used? I have a few people that want to play but we don't know how to play online.
There are a couple. I know of roll20 mainly. It's the free one
There's lot of different tools out there.
This article covers some of the popular ones:
?tag new online
There is also FoundryVTT but they have a 1 time payment of 50 bucks
I like using D&D Beyond, Discord (with Avrae), and Owlbear Rodeo.
Thank you this is extremely helpful!
hi
Welcome!
Any questions we can help with?
Just looking at seeing if there are campaigns going in Australian, US and EU times are a bit dodgy for me. They tend to be 5-6 am this end,
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
Thanks that pretty much answers a my question too.
They're 40% off atm so a good deal considering the books are getting updated later this year.
Hey everyone, new to 5e but not new to rp'ng having played AD&D 2nd edition and MERPS when I was younger and currently play Warhammer. Hoping to find a community and get some pointers on how to get into being a DM.
Ehm weird question ish but still so im a new dm and im holdning my first dnd campaign where 3 of my firends are playing and today was gonna be our second session ever and two cancled and the last left who tecnicly didnt cancel i tried to ask like if she wanted to work on her character and their background instead and like she is always so unintrested in this whole thing, like all of them are. And rn dnd and my campaign is like the thing i care abt most in the world like its super important to me and they dont really give a shit
I have no idea how to deal will any of this mostly because it is ofc okay for them to cancel if they cant play
But like the 2 ppl that canceled have been online on discord like all day
So its just very weird to me that they cant play dnd but they can play sims
Sometimes these things arenāt meant for everyone, and thatās perfectly okay. Yes, itās stressful and it hurts sometimes that some people arenāt as interested or engaged as you are. The most important thing to know is that you canāt force these things onto people, itās a hit or miss, the best thing to do is to just be patient with yourself
Yeah like i can litterly talk abt the dnd world i made for ours and i am also really exited to play the game and all the players were inyrested at first and said they wanted to join and be with but now they dont care at all
Yeah, itās hard. But you just have to find the people who do want to play. And those wonāt necessarily be the same people youāre besties with in other parts of your life.
Yeah thats understandable but like i know they do want to play but like not as much or they are not as invested or intrested as i am but like none of them seem like they dont wanna play at all like i am not gonna cancel the campaign or anything like that (tho rn i do want to but thats just because of that all this was so recent and it feels worse then it is)
But like i have thought abt basiclly running two campaigns at the same time
One is ofc the one with my friends which isnt so investing or often or deep lore involved and then if i can find ppl who are yk a bit more intrested then that would be possible to play more often or like as well
As long as im able to seperate what the party dies which i will and make a new discord server for the new one
Though i have no idea if that is a good idea or not like it might be taking water over my head
Yeah, getting people together to play, consistently, long-term, is like finding the right person to date.
Itās not going to easily happen unless youāre very lucky. Itās a huge commitment and it depends greatly on their likes and needs lining up with yours.
What I would recommend is one-shots. They can take place in your persistent world. The players can keep their characters.
But getting together for one game of d&d, for 3 hours, thatās the whole game. And then play again a different adventure at that point. Maybe with their same character, maybe they want to run something different. No pressure.
The huge campaign? Giant story arcs about the threat to the world, tied to all of their backstories? That will probably need to wait.
And just do bite-size āthis is the whole adventure in 3-hoursā adventures. Have one day on the calendar be a D&D party. Invite a few people to join, and whoever actually shows up, they go on the adventure. And they destroy the evil and the story ends. You give them treasure, you announce they all gained a level, and they can bring that character to the next D&D day if they want to, once you announce it.
Hey! I am a bit new to d&d, and though I have been playing on and off for a few months, there is something I do not understand, and that is the attack system. How do I determine what dice to roll for my attacks, and what stat points to add to them? Every time I attack, I have had to ask the DM what to roll. It is something I have never been able to catch onto.
For weapons and spell attacks you use a d20 plus your Proficiency Bonus modifier plus the relevant ability modifier.
Melee and thrown weapons use Str modifier.
Ranged weapons use Dex modifier.
Finesse weapons can use Str or Dex modifier.
Oh, so for example, shocking grasp, would I roll a d20, then add proficiency and dexterity?
No, you use your class' primary ability score modifier. Wizards use Int, sorcerers use Cha, etc.
Your attack bonus with a spell attack equals your spellcasting ability modifier + your proficiency bonus.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#AttackRolls
Ed Greenwood speaks to the aspiring spellcaster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQIveeMgHP8
You only add your proficiency bonus to weapon attacks if youāre proficient with that weapon.
You always add it to spell attacks.
And just to be sure, would this apply to all spells when attacking, or just cantrips, etc
Any spell that says to make an attack.
Okay, thank you so much
That really doesn't belong here. Ed deals with #dnd-lore and not game mechanics.
So when shocking grasp says this:
Make a melee spell attack against the target.
Thatās your cue to make an attack roll and add your spell attack modifier.
So spell craft is not game mechanics?
It's not the purpose of this channel
Please use the most appropriate channel for a topic - see #channel-guide to identify the most appropriate channel for a specific topic.

Hey everyone, new to 5e but not new to rp'ng having played AD&D 2nd edition and MERPS when I was younger and currently play Warhammer. Hoping to find a community and get some pointers on how to get into being a DM.
Rule 1. Have a lot of patience. Seriously it can be very overwhelming.
#dm-discussion would be the place to ask for DMing advice.
Hello, how to play DnD?
Various ways to play D&D - in person, online, in a community server, play by post on server or forum...
But it helps to start with understanding the game rules
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Once you're gone through the basic rules, feel free to ask questions here!
For creating adventures, how do you come up with the story. Is there a generator or something i can use?
Some people use pre written modules, others create it entirely themselves
Prompt generators can be used when designing yourself but there isn't a generator that would create it all for you
That's something that should be discussed in #dm-discussion. This channel is to help out new players to D&D rather than how to DM.
I keep a story generator right above my neck.
For me, Iāll typically just think of a cool campaign idea then figure it out from there
Or a cool villain and think of how I can make it fit, for example: a Priest using a Chronolometer to speed up time to heal his dying god but in the end causing the death of billions across the world
@undone trail but we are new? What's the difference between being a new player and aswell as wanting some basic advice on what books/modules to invest in to dm?
All I've seen on here getting told to post in another channel and pushed from pillar to post, sorry but discord is already confusing for some of us who are simply after a plain answer without having to ask in several different places.
I agree, I am new to D and D, and I just wanted advice on how to create a story. Not to be told to go to another chat.
Groovy thanks
The other thing that you could do is watch a piece of media and add your own spin on it
For example, that Priest I was talking about is very similar to Pucci from JoJos bizarre adventure
Sounds interesting! I might do that, thanks!
Yup, just add your own spin that makes your story unique and fun
Cool, thanks
Hello! I've never played D&D but me and my friends would like to. What class should I choose for my chara? Druid or rogue? Idk which is better but these two classes are the ones that I'd like to choose from. Could anyone help me decide? What are the pros and cons?
best to ask in #character-discussion
can help ya there
Druids are typically stronger due to their access of magic and wild shapes. They have a large variety of support spells that can boost the parties chance of survival. The con is that they are pretty complex for beginners
Rogues are skill monkeys and are pretty simple for new players. Rogues so high damage but donāt get many attacks, they are usually limited only in your creativity and DM leniency. Con they are not as supportive of your party and they are typically weaker in combat
Hiya! I've never played D&D, but would like to learn cause it seems fun :). Was wondering if there was anywhere online that I can play though, as my (limited) friend group isn't really into that sorta thing, and I'd like to make some more friends and learn about the game ^^
Rogues are useful mostly out of combat for things like scouting, lock picking and trap detection
Druids are good at a lot
#750812887697588356 you can post your own advertisement to look for a dm
#looking-for-players DMs are advertising their game
#paid-looking-for-game These DMs are typically professionals and on average give a better experience, however they are pricy
#looking-for-community is also an option for bigger games and such
The other option which I do is go to a local game store near you and see if they have Adventurers league which is like official and structured D&D play with official added rules and such
Or join a discord server for things like westmarch (Iāve heard of them but have no experience with them so I have no guarantee of quality)
if you arent familiar with dnd as much, i'd suggest to go through this too
I recommend reading the basic rules and just letting your table know that you are new and they should be welcoming
Most horror stories online are extremely rare, and the few that I have experience has happened over my 7-8 years of playing so.
It is very rare to experience hostile players, this community is typically very welcoming
in most cases, if someone is being a bit of a stinker then people will kick em out
i have to assume anyone who puts a liiiiiiiittle bit of effort into finding a good group, instead of just any old group, should run into reletively few problems
That's nice to know š
the ones where problems show up are gonna be mostly the people who are frustrated and decide to just join whatever group will take em becuase they need a body
As long your willing to learn then nobody should raise a stink
Is there an app which allows me to visualise what my character will look like?
Hey! Is there a good way to get into this? I really wanna get into a game but most just feel annoyed cuz I donāt know anything
Check out #dnd-heroforge-etc - there are a few apps out there for creating images for your character. As a note we do not allow AI-generated art on this server though so things like midjourney and such wouldn't be alllowed to be shared here.
Check the pinned messages here in the channel - they have useful resources to help get you started (including a link to the free basic rules)
other than some features of your race, the look of your character is pretty much entirely up to you
Thx

Hello š hope everyone is having a great day
Hello ^^
Um i had a DND set maybe 4 years ago but that is all i know so far š
The dice was cool
What do you remember?
Ummm...I know that there are different classes and things like rolling
That's good, there us a website called DnD Beyond. It has almost anything you need to know š
I filled out my character sheet and was very sad to realize i did not have anybody to play with
my poor rogue elf ibis
Ooo i will see it
You can join the server looking for players.
It has different campaigns for you to join
I have one question
It is embarrassing to admit i am a young player. is there more than most campaigns who do not allow this type of player?
That is something you'll want to tell them before you join, not all games are for all ages, but I knew a dm who was twelve and he was great, just have to find the right group for you and you'll be golden
Hi I'm new to dnd looking for players I'm a little bit shy to meet or talk to new people but looking for nice people to play dnd with
Ok
Its awesome youre getting started, there are many places to find games but I think the easiest one atm is here, find something that fits your time and that sounds fun for you and hit up the DM. https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008

Welcome to the hobby
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person.
Online options in this server:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players
- These posts are by DMs looking for players.
- Tip: Elaborate on what your preferences you have for a game and what your play-style is. Details can help a DM determine if you'd be compatible for the campaign they want to run.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in #adventurers-league
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
Other options
You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Hey, does anyone have a guide for creating a character who is level 14?
I know how to create characters lower level, but I do not know how to create a higher level character
Thatās just a link to that channel
Start at level 1, then add the other 13 one at a time.
Not likely, unless there's a ridiculous number of party members.
there's only 7 of us š
I wanted to use a bean from the bean bag but I don't want a random super boss to show up
I came up with the most epic backstory ever seen and none od my friends are online to rate it, what world is this
I just planted a bean and a pyramid appeared in the center of town
Poggers
if you want people to take a look at a backstory, maybe try over in #character-discussion

Hi all, I'm a big fan of D&D for years, but have never played. My interest has grown to the point that I want to try a campaign, but if I'm being real, I'm introverted and have a lot of anxiety about finding a game. What are some tips for me to look for? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Also, what type of campaign should I look for? There seems to be a lot of variations and I'm not sure what is what.
hi
Pretty much try out different play styles and find one that works for you, I recomend using as versetile role as you can so you can try out doing more during the campain
any recomendations for a "versatile character?
Ranger or rogue are good choices from my experience that is quite limited
If you want, I can help you make a character tomorrow!
oh! That would be helpful.
my biggest advice is to have patience.Finding a group takes time. some times a long time. So if you apply to a game, but don't get accepted, don't take it personally. There are a lot of players and not a lot of DMs.
That said, if you have local game stores near you, you might be able to see if they have a weekly game you could join.
This discord server also has channels to help connect groups..
If you are over 18, theres DND bars too!
Thanks! I've been looking in the #looking-for-players section, but just unsure what type of game is good to start with.
Def over 18
'type of campaign' is vague.
there are mainly two variations of gameplay:
- one-shots: a single self-contained adventure that usually last 4-8 hours. they are fully independent, with the full game ending once the session is over.
- campaigns: a large, overarching story of gameplay consisting of many sessions and adventures with an overarching plot. these can last from months to years of real-world time, and you level up several times in these.
for a first game, i would reccomend a one-shot for a low-stakes way to learn by playing (once you have read the rules, of course).
Campaigns are by far the most popular way to play (one famous one has lasted 39 years straight). I would join one after you have played a one-shot or two to get a hang of gameplay.
sometimes those adds will say "open to new players" which means they should be especially accomodating to those who are learning. Although I find most groups are open to new people as long as that person lets them know they are learning. š
Nice, thanks for the input!
this is good to know, I'll keep an eye out for newbie compatable.
Hey everyone, I'm a new DM with a group of noobies. We are currently up to session 2 and I really don't have any idea of what I'm doing. Can anyone help me with tricks to use so my group don't get board.
Currently in the campaign they are in a small village that's constantly attacked by spiders, they have gone into the dungeon and slayed a bunch of enemies to find a map of the whereabouts of the mother spider which im going to make 1 or 2 phase spiders as the boss.
Now the thing is I have a bigger plan, I have a special spider boss called the spider tyrant and I plan for this boss to be hiding under the capital city where the king dwells, I also plan to make the king either a Doppleganger, charmed or just straight up evil. Now the help that im asking for is I want to guide them on the right path to killing the spider tyrant but I just don't want my campaign to be all fighting. They are going to arrive at the capital soon and I would like some guidance on how I can make them more entertained with npcs, investigations, plot and traps.
Thanks.
maybe pop over to #dm-discussion so folks more specialized can help you out š
Okay thanks
Welcome to the hobby
The community has more than its fair share of introverts.
Overall it's all about communication, for a home campaign have a session zero to set preferences and boundaries.
If you want to work your way up to a full campaign Play By Post games and Community Campaigns such as D&D Adventures League would be a good place to start.
- Play by Post adventures are done through text in discord channels or forums. While slower, this can help reduce some of the pressure of playing with new people.
- Community campaigns such Adventurers League are episodic. Each session is structured as a one-shot that lasts between two to four hours. This can allow you to space out your play times to suit your comfort levels.
Hi, been a while since I've been able to do anything D&D, looking to fix that ^^

Hello there My name is Fire š„
I have been playing D&D for about 14 years now in on and off games. I have DM'd for a couple of games before and have enjoyed making so many dnd characters over the years.
I started with Dungeons & Dragonsā3rd Edition Revised (v.3.5e) back in 2010 and played a few games in public grade school (Only played a couple games in that edition)
Then in 2014 I was re-introduced into 5th edition and I have been playing ever since.
I love Sci fi and fantasy of all types as as such getting to make characters as a hobby and min max ideas is fun for me.
I'm currently trying to get into a few more groups so I can play more and enjoy my passion for this game.
Since my old groups and other games with the small group of friends I knew are gone I'm branching out.
I'm currently trying to get into a few more groups,
I'm but a humble dragon looking for my next D&D party.
My girlfriend is also around as she wants to get into more DnD games but she is relatively new to D&D 5e.
I may not be a newcomer but I have a few things that make online stuff difficult for me:
- I use a character PDF and dislike DnDBeyond (DDB) because I don't have money for all the expansions.
- I don't really learn Turturro table tops well and dislike Discord bots as I get confused by them a lot.
- I'm a traditional pen and paper style player as such I'm looking to do things simply with theater of the mind.
- I am relatively shy in big big servers and as such trying to find games or communicate is difficult for me.
Please PM me if you're a DM and would love an eager player to play with.
Any help to find a game that me and my girlfriend can join in and play at is greatly appreciated š
Do you think anyone could help me learn

I've been playing dnd 5e for 10 years so I'm familiar with a lot of mechanics but there's also people on YouTube that explain stuff pretty good
I have and it's very confusing to me as I get a bit overwhelmed by that chat.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Are there any new books with new subclasses and playable races? I'm not up-to-date on newer stuff.
There's a lot of supplementary material and add on books that give lots of stuff for players other than the PHB
I just got 5th edition

Hello Lads, Iām decently new to D&D, I know like how to make a character with the bare minimum, but thats about it, Does anyone have some tips with better character building and for example how to make decent lore for a character?
Oh what i also noticed are some terms on this server i have never seen before like 60/40 or homebrew, could anyone explain what that means?
Homebrew is self-made or not official content
I have no idea what 60/40 is
Probably a percentage or a ratio that means something
Usually refers to the general ratio of rp to combat in a given campaign or game iirc
Ah alright, Gotcha
So 40% combat and 60% roleplay
Or vice versa, yes
Lore really depends on setting and what game you're in but a backstory is all about what flavor you want your character to have and what they were or are before they started adventuring.
Hmm, Do you perhaps have some advice how to properly roleplay? Because i massively suck at it

Hmm i see
Honestly, for me itās about getting into the mindset of a character,
The beauty is that it can be as simple or complex as you wish
Man, i still have a lot to learn i see
Seeing im still decently new but not that new, what type of character would yall recommend for me?
The bot post above has some resources to help you build a character.
If you already decided on a class, I recommend checking out the Handbooker Helper series as they have short and detailed videos for almost every class.
In regards to backstory and character lore, you can get some help in #character-discussion .
Still the recommendation is to hold off on character until you are a part of a campaign so you can craft your character's lore based on the campaign's setting.
The reason, doing so will help ensure compatibility.
Ultimately your backstory should answer a few key questions:
- What is your character's reason to be an active participant in the campaign's story?
- Why does does your character need to work with team?
- What makes them compatible with their adventuring group?
Alright, noted
One made for a campaign you're intending on playing in after talking with the dm and attending a session 0 where the setting is explained so the character you make is one that belongs to and feels from that world.
There are a couple approaches, after-all like anything else it's a skill that takes time and effort to build up.
- Take improv classes. Doing so can help you think on your feat and build something off prompts.
- Take opportunities to describe how you character does something.
- Example, my druid has access to Mage Armor. When they cast the spell, I say they slam their staff into the ground, which causes vines to immediately sprout and wrap their body in vines to form their armor.
- This article provides additional advice on how to get better at roleplaying in D&D: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1463-how-to-get-better-at-roleplaying-in-d-d
What would you personally consider your weak areas in relation to roleplaying?
Well itās kinda hard to explain but i will try to explain it
Everytime i try to like roleplay, My brain just freezes up and so i canāt really think of what my said character would do in that specific situation
It probably boils down to insecurities? But i wonāt bother yāall with that
This is why its important to establish Your Characterās goals and personality during creation
What do they want
What do they like/dont like
How do they treat other people
And if you're new, don't try to overcomplicate things, if roleplaying is something that comes to you not naturally, that's fine, we all started there. Stick with simple concepts, and simple ideas that are easy to roleplay, and you'll eventually find the experience/confidence to try harder concepts!
Some confusion here buddy, I was not the one saying to go to another channel. All good š š
I am super new to dnd too and I totally understand the struggle with rp. Something I found useful is that I go to a ttrpg website like DemiPlane and I just create characters for different ttrpg's that I see. The character building questions differ for each, but I find that I can apply these questions to my current character in my game and it helps get myself into the rp a bit more! I would highly suggest looking at the Daggerheart ttrpg character creation because that was pretty great ngl! Good luck, friend!
I don't know nothing about but it looks promising
hellow everyone.
I know this is a weird question but for first time player (just got the player handbook and have no idea of gameplay)
should I start looking for table or should I learn a little before I start?
(more like can I learn it on a fly?)
You can learn on the fly, but it's generally considered better ettiquette to try and learn the basics beforehand
like prepping character before meeting table and learning combat/spells?
well, you'll generally want to make a character after joining a table, to make it fit the group
but making a practice character to learn the process is good, and just generally learning how the game runs and how combat works
Where do i learn about combat and other things like that?
check out the basic rules. they're linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Do stats increase when you level up?!
Stats are increased whenever you gain an Ability Score Improvement (ASI)
They can do, yeah
all classes gain them at level 4, 8, 12, 16, and 19
No, they don't
See above
some classes gain additional ASIs at other levels
It varies from class to class
See above again
every class gets them at those 5 levels, afaik
(at least)
Basically at certain points you get an ability score improvement; this is shown on your class table. This allows you to improve either one ability score by 2 points or two scores by 1 point
There is an optional rule to take what's called a feat instead of those ability score improvements, meaning that improving your ability stats is technically optional
Apologies, you are entirely correct, I am totally wrong
All good, everyone makes mistakes
Hey there
I'm struggling to find a party, they aren't letting me in because I'm new
Finding the right group to play with can be an adventure itself. Sorry that it hasn't worked out for you yet - keep looking, be diligent, patient, and persistent.
Also... have you checked the #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels?
Also look at other TTRPG servers/forums and websites.
Yes.
Sorry to hear that
i've only started researching about dnd recently and have already made a character but im wondering, how important is it to build a good character?
i like world building and character creation, so the skills, traits i gave to my character isnt considering anything other than the story i have in my head
What do you mean by a 'good' character?
Do you mean good as in morally good?
Or do you mean powerful/optimised?
Or do you just mean competent?
you should build a functional character at least. someone who can contribute to their party inside of combat, and ideally also outside of it.
this doesnt mean you need to optimize every choice
you also should build a character that is interesting in working with the other characters at the table and who will be interested in joining the adventure(s) you play
Does anyone have a campaign on beyond for newcomers?
Offering a campaign like that just for access would be against D&D Beyonds Terms of Use

any advice on how to deal more damage or fight better
i do no damage
Offering a campaign for newcomers you mean ?
Offering a D&D Beyond campaign for access to character options via content sharing and the like just for the sake of access to it
I was just asking if any dungeon master had a campaign to join, just wanted to mention that Iām new š
Ah sorry xD It's a very specific thing to ask when it comes to D&D Beyond. While you can nowadays use it to play D&D thanks to the new in development maps feature, it's still not an active play area hence my confusion since D&D Campaigns are ment for content sharing with your group.
As for finding games, we have dedicated channels for that like the embed the Bot posted :)
what kind if character do you have
do you get sneak attack on most turns?
depends on the angle i have against an enemy
well you should be getting sneak attack almost every turn. Try to look for places to hide, or to attack enemies that are next to allies. or use Steady Aim from tasha's if you are level 3+
otherwise, what is your dexterity?
18
also, its probably best we take this to #character-discussion if we get further into character build advice

What would be the best book for a newbie? Eberron, Wild beyond the witchlight, Planescape, Dragon heist, Ghosts of saltmarsh, Southlands the city of cats?
For a new player, the most important book is the Player's Handbook. After that, Xanathar's Guide to Everything and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything are the next best two. From there on, most other supplements only provide a few options to players.
