But if you’ve got any specific questions, ask away!
Is it to late now to say sorry:
||to whatever times I’ve ever dared to ask “why do DM’s take weeks to script for one session||
I’ve realized why it takes so late
Scripting an entire made up world?
Scripting almost all the details for one monster
Some do. Some put together a scenario in a location with a motivated actor and a complication, think "what if a troll, but actively on fire?" and swap a vulnerability and a resistance around (and consider aura damage). Then find a way to insert adventurers.
Warding Wind is a 2nd level spell
Sort of. Catapult, Zephyr Strike, Thunderclap, Gust could all count as air-related and available at level one or as cantrips.
The spell descriptions will say. In the case of Feather Fall (https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/feather-fall) it targets a creature within 60' of you that is falling. That can include you.
The spells will say if they need a willing target.
Your class details will say how you can change your known spells, if at all.
Hi guys! I'm new. How do I start? Are there any guidelines?

I want to start my journey on DND. Will this be enough:-
Dungeons and Dragons Player's Handbook; - Durable & lightweight dungeons and dragons Dice with Bags; - DnD 5e
30 Paper Figures
1000 Basic Characters
Blank Character Sheet
Horizontal DM Screen
Grid Sheets
That's more than enough
All you need to start playing D&D is
- Free basic rules
- Free character sheet
- Free digital dice
No wizard hat? I kid, but what are the 1000 basic characters?
It say it is pre built character
How do I start about learning stuff
Blimus. That's a lot of pregens. But yes, book and dice and on you go. Here, take a look at these links.

You don't need pre-built characters, let alone 1,000 of them
And to start learning stuff, read the basic rules
Okay
When it comes to Dash, it mentions about adding "modifiers?" Can someone explain to me about that, please. I can't find anything online about it.
It means if something increases or decreases your speed (modifies it), it'll apply retroactively to your dash action
I see, thanks. I thought it meant your stat modifiers.
Say your speed is 30 ft
You dash, allowing you to move a total of 60 ft
Then you use your bonus action to activate some ability that gives you +10 ft speed
This means your base speed is now 40ft, with a dash you have 80ft of total movement, and now can move another 20ft if you want because you've only moved 60 ft so far this turn
Hey everyone
Extremely new to dnd here
I want to know some basic rules

Quick question about Opportunity attack. Say would someone use their movement (speed) if they were dragged away from a target or thrown? I don't get the part, "when someone or something moves you without using your movement"
Being dragged doesn't use your movement

Hey guys any suggestions for an easy one shot campaigns for noobs?
Got about 3 or 4 players and it would my first time being DM.
While I haven't played it, the ones that usually end up recommended is Wild Sheep Chase and a Most Potent Brew, which are third party ones. However, I would also recommend not chasing the "one shot" idea. It's hard to pull off even with experience in DMing. Trying DM for the first time, with new players, and complete a one shot is not likely to be a great experience - you will feel pressed for time, maybe feel like you failed if you don't complete it, or push yourselves past the point of enjoyment in order to "fit it all in". Even if you do try those one-shots, don't feel bad if you have to put it down and come back to it.
It's better to have 2 3-hour sessions you enjoy than one 6-hour session that stops being fun after 4 hours.
And with that said, the official tutorial campaign Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is ideal for teaching you how to DM, and suiting a realtively short campaign.
That makes sense. I planned on it taking about 2-3 hours anyways. I guess i just worry they may not enjoy it so we couldn't continue the story if its not something that clicks with all of them.
Ill check out that dragons of stormwreck isle for sure. Thank you
I know the feeling. I think if you have a group who aren't 100% sure at the moment, giving them the taster of a start of the campaign will probably lure them in more than a complete story that feels like a confusing marathon. Dragons of Stormwreck Isle does a pretty good job of drawing you in from the start, I think - by the end of the first session, everyone will understand what's going on, and what their role is.
That sounds a lot better thank you for the tips
You can get Stormwreck’s intro for free if you don’t want to buy the starter set outright before you know your group is into the game. Other good single-session beginner-friendly adventures to check out: The Delian Tomb, Peril in Pinebrook, The Silvyr Tower, The Green Blight, or any of Winghorn Press's other stuff, since they were already mentioned.

#character-discussion is where to go to get feedback on a character!
The bot post above has a bunch of resources to get you started. If you have specific questions, feel free to ask!
At a first glance, it looks like you used Point Buy, no? If so, try to aim for even-numbered ability scores. Changing a 12 to a 13 (or the reverse) doesn't really have any impact, but changing a 13 to a 14 does. #character-discussion can help, though, if you want any further advice.

hello!
Welcome!
hello i'm new
I'm new
Is it frowned upon to make a character based on a character that already exists in a game?
That's up to your DM. They have final say.
It can depend but the general answer is 'Nope, it's pretty normal to be inspired by other characters from other media'.
But you need to make sure that your idea:
- Can be done within D&D rules
- Doesn't break immersion for other players and DM.
Like basing a character on say.. Link from legend of zelda is doable. But if you named the character Link and went too far into it, then it might break immersion.
Making a character like.. Rick from Rick and Morty might be harder to do (I'm not interested in causing a debate on how to make Rick to anyone who reads this, not the channel for that) and would be more anachronistic and potentially clashing with D&D.
But much of this can very much depend on the tone of the game, and style and homebrew and so on- and that depends on your DM
Familiarity is also a factor. I can't put little moments into the game just for you if I'm not familiar with the source you're drawing from.
Howdy. Old hand at ttrpg, new to 5th edition. Trying to check a few things about casting "correctly". I'm a Pact of the blade Hexblade. GM added a trait to a magical weapon that lets me use it as my arcane focus. I took the War Caster feat at 4th level. Does that combination of stuff let me both wield the sword and shield and cast things with somatic and material components?
With War Caster and a weapon that's considered your focus, yes.
Assuming, of course, that the spell doesn't have material components that have a listed gold value or are consumed by the casting.
im new can please someone help me find a dm

We're building 10th level characters, I'm focused on skills and utility spells. AC 22 (+1 halfplate, +2 shield). Melee attacks are a +2 rapier, so I'm looking at two attacks at +11, rolling d8+7 (+4 vs cursed) (+2d6 sneak attack) (+d6 hex). Where am I on the "not useful in combat" to "glass cannon" to "overtuned tryhard"? I'm aiming for useful, not powergame.
#character-discussion or #optimization would be better places to ask.
Apologies, but #character-discussion or #optimization might be better channels to ask this question. This one's for brand new players, and that's a bit high brow
This channel is to help new players to the game.
Ok, thanks! I didn't see optimization channel, and character discussion looked like a lot more roleplay than mechanics.

I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
How do you decide what spells your character has, what weapons your character has, and make sure that's all in the rules
Someone ping me when you have a answer
Thankfully that's nice and simple! Your class tells you exactly what you can start with.
Your class and background with both gives you a few choices for starting equipment.
Your class will tell you what weapons/armor you are proficient in
If your class has spellcasting it will direct you to the appropriate list of spells
You can pick anything from those choices.
Ohhh
Class also gives options for starting equipment
Ok 🙂
What's your race, class, and background?
Currently? Wood elf, fighter, and I forget my background but its like grew up a orphan or smth (I'm not playing rn I just had a question lol)
So you likely won't have any spells, then.
Ok
The section here that says "Equipment" lists your starting choices for a fighter:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/fighter#ClassFeatures
Ok 🙂 ty
If you're thinking of the Urchin background, then you also start with this:
Equipment: A small knife, a map of the city you grew up in, a pet mouse, a token to remember your parents by, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp
(My first character was also a wood elf fighter, btw. 🥳)
Actually????
Dam
Yeah, but a Gladiator instead of an Urchin.
Hi! I didn’t see a channel for introductions so I do apologize if this is the wrong place, but I would very much like to join a campaign. I’ve never played DnD before, but I have been obsessed with Baldur’s Gate, so I have an okay grasp of the actual mechanics of the game. (At least I think lol)
Welcome! If you're looking for a group to join, #find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
BG3's a great introduction, though, but there are some fundamental differences in the rules.

@lyric fjord Movement in D&D follows normal movement logic
Unless you're using the optional grid rules, where distances can get a little weird
i see, it's because i saw a tweet from matt colville saying that the universe D&D takes place in is non-euclidean, and that's there's no Pythagorean theorem in a D&D world
That's a joke/sarcasm about some of the implications you get if you treat game mechanics as perfectly describing the game world
u sure?
Yes, I am 100% sure
ok, thanks
The rules make simplifications for the purpose of making the game work easily and smoothly
Those simplifications are not perfect descriptions of the game world
just to know, by RAW, does the physics and chemistry in the D&D universe work like our own?
That question doesn't make sense
RAW doesn't cover how the D&D universe works, it covers how you play D&D as a game
RAW stands for rules as written
so whar covers that then?
Lore
i see
And as for lore pertaining to those things, some things work the same, some don't
It's fantasy, the moment you start getting hung up on science you're comparing rock and roll to baking
They both rake in the dough. 🥁
D&D is a fantasy game where gods can create worlds and creatures with magic. The game not a physics/science simulator.
Taking it further, every game is effectively a universe of its own.
And any one of them can change those things to suit whatever story they want to tell.
D&D rules have simplified things for ease of use. Combat is turn-based because the players are human and not computers that can do hundreds of millions of calculations a second.
id be curious how you think a non euclidian dnd universe would be different?
i see, it's because i wanted to use the spell heat metal as a damage boost spell, and when a tried to show to my DM the 2 months worth of research i made to prove that that was physically possible, he got mad and accused me for meta gaming(saying that using real world logic was against D&D spirit or smt)
i cant really imagine any meaningful way it matters
may i send you a DM?
Spells only do what their spell descriptions say they do. Nothing more, nothing less.
its probably safe to say, if you wrote a dissertation about how you think you should be able to bend the rules .... ya. not gonna fly
Well the spell doesn't work that way per the rules and generally speaking it can come over as a bit antagonistic to do "research" to try and beat the DM into submission to change the rules
I mean, given the fact that diagonals are still 5 ft on a grid unless you're using the variant, I'm pretty sure lots of people play in a non-Euclidian D&D world 😁. And for the most part, it makes no other difference
And yeah, any player who tries to tell me science means their spell is more powerful is getting a flat
Their question was more based on a sardonic tweet that implied that this abstraction for the purpose of gameplay was descriptive of the actual world
i would think that dnd is necessarily non euclidian simply by the fact that alternate plains exist
but each plain would still have euclidian geometry itself
That's not what that means and isn't within the scope of this channel
I like to believe it is, just because the world is magic anyway. And I think it's funny to imagine
But I don't expect it to have any mechanics implications and if there's a tweet, it's immediately something I know nothing about.
Regardless, I feel like the new player advice is to just not worry too much about actual physics/geometry/etc
@nocturne marsh A wizards spellbook stores the spells they can prepare from
That's the point
Other prepared casters such as cleric and artificer may be able to prepare without a spellbook, but they have a smaller list to prepare from
hm.
Wizards have access to the broadest selection of spells in the game.
The spellbook narrows that so you prepare from the spells your wizard has studied.
And they can expand that by finding spells in-game.
Clerics have access to 16 first level spells
Wizards have access to 43
I love wizards
So once a wizard has scribed 16 first level spells, they have the same flexibility of spell prepping as a cleric

Welcome!
Hello, new person here
ello
Hello everyone 👋
Greetings
Hello!
Damage: 1 + 0 piercing + 5 + 6 poison, i just go this from roll 20 and its confusing me. is this just a crit
a snake just a bit a player and rolled a crit so thats the damage
So I have a question since this is a newcomers section. So if there’s 2 people (since I’m new a friend is showing me the ropes tomorrow. So would be able to play more than one person?
i guess does a crit roll more than one Dice is what confusing me here
Poisonous Snake:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/16982-poisonous-snake
It does 1 piercing damage + 5 (2d4) poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
If it crits it does 2 points of piercing damage.
D&D is a collaborative group game, typically with one Dungeon Master (DM) and optimally 3 to 5 players.
Oh..
Because it’s just so I can get the gist of what’s going on before I get in a group
Most adventures are designed around four players (DMs will have to adjust according based on the number of players they have at their table).
One-on-one games (one DM and one player) is doable but not uncommon.
But again, D&D is a group collaborative and social game.
That I know! My friend has played D&D for a while and just wanted to make sure I understood the gist so I don’t get confused or anything like that
If you check the Events section you will see Virtual Weekends where they should have games for new players.
Oh! I’ll try to check it out if I can because I’ll be a bit busy this weekend
Hey,we got a newbie games on saturdays if ya want
are 2 people able to play one character? kinda like Jacob and Esau in the binding of Isaac but reverse
Hiya! Got here post chatting with a friendly community member on GM Rob Hartley's discord. (Shout out to d.e.f.a.u.l.t.). I wanted to learn how to play DnD after having watched and followed the VLDL squad on their Epic NPC DnD adventure, which genuinely cracks me up.
I don't know if it's ever explicitly banned, but it would probably be difficult
Unless you're never playing in the same sessions

Both are linked above.

I’ll try to make it! If I’m not busy
Jacob and Esau aren't... the same being. They're just two people, and in TBOI, the context is normally controlling one character.
They'd literally just be two characters, being brothers.
That'd be two people playing a character each
But if you want to play two characters at once and your DM is fine with it, go for it!
Sometimes, people will do this if they have a very small group. e.g. there's one DM and two players, so each player has two characters. However, it's more stuff to keep track of, and you aren't likely to do this in a situation where you don't need to.
hallo, I'm a newcomer who knows almost nothing about the game, but I do understand some of the gameplay concept and the rules of the game. I'm pretty interested in getting into dnd, can anyone help me get started?

Dragon’s are cool
No, if it crits it does 1 piercing + 10 (4d4) poison.
When you score a critical hit, you get to roll extra dice for the attack's damage against the target. Roll all of the attack's damage dice twice and add them together. Then add any relevant modifiers as normal.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#CriticalHits
Only the number of dice are doubled, not any fixed numbers.
Helloo I’m pretty new to dnd, and I’d love to find a beginner friendly group to play with. Anyone who can help?
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups. A lot of them are probably beginner-friendly even if they’re not explicitly advertised that way, so if you see one you’re interested in, just ask!
Thank you sm!
hi!! newcomer here and i dont know anything bout the game, just the concept of how it goes. ive tried reading and watching videoes bout the rules and how to play dnd and stuff but there was too much info going on and im really bad at taking info all at one, and find it hard to listen too long in vids, is there something that can help me at least get the basics known with a (maybe ai) experience of what the campaign game would be like?
This introductory demo gives a quick overview of the basics:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
But is there a specific rule you want clarified?
thank you tons!!!
the ability score has me the most confused:'3
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
Have you picked a race and class already?
chose wizard, and race is a high elf?
Hello
For a wizard, I’d put INT highest, followed by CON and DEX.
You probably need STR the least.
WIS and CHA you could put in whichever order.
Strength, charisma and wisdom are all rather uninteresting to you. STR the least, the other two can be useful but generally other party members will have that covered
As a high elf, you’ll also add 2 to your DEX, and 1 more to your INT.
So with the Standard Array, you might end up with something like this:
- STR: 8
- DEX: 15
- CON: 14
- INT: 16
- WIS: 12
- CHA: 10
Intelligence is your spellcasting ability. You want that as high as you can get to make your spells more effective.
just to clarify tho, is the ability part of a rule for when you roll the dice?? Like, i roll a 10 and i can add a dex so that makes the roll i have 12??
Your DEX modifier gets added to the roll.
A DEX score of 15 does indeed have a modifier of +2.
So 12 is correct.
OOOOH I GET IT, THANK YOU!!
This table shows the modifier for each score:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
thanks a lot, it helped surprisingly, esp the introductory demo!!
what is the best dnd monster to put in the start of a campaign?
Depends on what level you're starting at
If level 1, something small like mephits or giant rats
Depends. What kind of story do you want to tell?
Sup

i am gonna be honesy everything i get some ideas but even after reading the player handbook has no idea where to start
What's the limits of the character I can make?
None over all, although some character makers have limits.
However you'll only use one character in a game at a time, so making more might be fun, but might also distract you from the one you're currently playing.
@solemn light thanks
Though once you find a game, your DM may have specific resources that they want you to use
Or things that better fit the specifics of their world
Okay I think I understand
I need help with character making i read the player hand book but dont know where to start
Start with the chapter titled "Step by Step Character Creation" and follow said steps
thank you 🙂
if you have questions while reading that part, we can help answer
Have you picked a race, class, and background?
Sounds fun
If you want to keep it simple, rogue is the easier of the two.
Bards have spellcasting and Bardic Inspiration which adds a few more things to keep track of, but they’re a lot of fun, too.
so i was planning on either a lawful good rough or a manipulative bard
Do you mean rogue?
lke a bard who uses his charisma for manipulation or a rogue that become a rogue without wanting it like one thing become that and he ended up as a rogue so he is a bit hesistant about commiting crmies
yes sorry
help
how do i determine my ability scores
hey
You have a couple options, you can take the standard array, use a system called point buy or roll your stats
and how do i roll my stats
Roll 4d6 and subtract the lowest
Do note that this is all listed in the PHB/basic rules in the instructions for building characters as well
And people may not be able to respond to you immediately, so it helps to give them a bit
You roll the primary 6. I think there's a linked post on it somewhere
may i dm you for help i might need to ask a few more questions
There's as command for the abilities info, but the post is also just right here #dnd-newcomers message
Yeah, that post gives a quick rundown. ☝️
so for a dark elf rogue what is the stat i want highest
Dexterity, usually.
hi, i wanna use the race Harengon but i dunno if its enable in the server and i dindt see him in Beyond website. i can use it?
It's not a free option
You would need to buy Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse or can buy the Harengon race individually
how i buy a race?
On the Mordenkainen Presents webpage, you can scroll down and see all the items you can buy individually
Otherwise, if you're not using D&D Beyond, then you'd need to get it on that platform or have/borrow the book instead
DDB does allow you to manually enter information that you own elsewhere as homebrew, but it takes some work
if i use in the automatically i need to pay or in free form using homebrew. understood
i need to ask one thing, if i buy some expasion pack or physical one but in other lenguage
i can have the acess in d&d beyon
If it's sold on DDB, it would give you access on DDB
Purchasing something elsewhere wouldn't count for that
hmm even if is in a website that is licensed or a physical store?
3rd party websites aren't linked to D&D Beyond so the purchase would only work on their sites
Alright so I don't have a laptop since it broke, all I have is my phone
Would that be enough to play or do I need an entire board setup
It's possible to play without a computer, but most VTTs are a bit hard to use
In my experience phone only works best if you're doing theater of the mind or maybe something fairly stripped down like Owlbear rodeo
Or in person games of course
A play by post game would also work since it's text only
Idk what any of that means
I just discovered dnd today
VTT - virtual table tops. Sites like Foundy or Roll20 let you play online together
Play by post - is an online game that progresses over text
Theater of the mind - everything or a lot of the game is imagined instead of using tokens
Check out #looking-for-players or make a post in #750812887697588356. You can also check out the D&D Beyond forums or sites like Roll20 for open games.
Hmmm
Thank you!
hello! idk how to do this- I'm new- and interested in playing DND, but idk much about it.. can someone help me🥲?
@echo kelp
the bot is having issue right now but that link takes you to a post with a bunch of helpful starter links @lyric fjord
thanks a lot!♡
hey everyone
My friend group is new to DND and I just got nominated as our DM, I haven't played 1 game and I'm watching 24 videos a day on the game. I get the rules on paper, but I need practice. Does anyone have a game I could sit in on and watch from the dms perspective, all the games I can find on youtube don't show any behind the scenes information. Anyone have a video for something like that?
I'm also reading the dnd beyond handbook and it's helpful, but navigating it is kind of tough.
Google "Critical Role" 😂
They're... professionals but it should give you a rough idea and it'll at least be entertaining
Did it, looking for a more behind the scenes view. They are more entertaining than anything else. I'm tryna see what the DM is doing from a mechanic perspective. They did make me laugh yesterday though. Thank you for the recommendation.
the stuff happening that you cant see is, mostly? rolling dice to see if the thing the players wanted to do works. and having piles of prepared notes about the story and the monsters and NPCs
the mechanics parts are the easy parts sadly lol. the hard part is knowing the story stuff and telling that story
Libraries worth of notes
Matt Coville's 'Running the Game' and #dm-discussion might be of help.
Running a prewritten adventure can be a big help at first, and beyond notes, it's more things like talking with players. Session 0s were you set expectations, boundaries, discuss preferences and dislikes, tone, houserules, so on are major parts of the game.
CR isn't just 'Matt Mercer is just great DM, don't hold yourself to those standards' which is... not good advice, it's that CR has lots of discussions behind the game that help the players and DM know what they want to do next and be better able to read each other's cues and expectations. Could be things like knowing if a character wants to explore certain story beats for example and trying to set up for those. They don't just happen.
Hello, I'm new to D&D. I have collected many of the books and a few models but I have never played.
Welcome!
My advice is to take the campaign you are planning and just solo the first couple of encounters. Think like your players. Anticipate what tehy might do. Yes its one-person chess, but it will really help. Do that a couple of times and youll be fine.
Hi I'm new can someone teach me how to play and do I need a set irl
sup im cybercake and i would like to get in to dnd can anyone help me start?
Thank you, I tried the first encounter and relised that a homebrew my friend wanted was much too weak even at max level. I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you.
You can watch videos made by jocat
I think there called "A crap guide to D&D"
oh thx
there interesting with animations and informative
if you ever need people to play with me and my friend are looking for a group
just gotta find a DM
Hey I'm new but I don't know how to play can someone please help teach me also do I need the game irl
Check the pinned messages on this channel - it inlcudes useful linsk/resources to help get you started including the free basic rules.
I’m a dm and I can help you get into the game
Hi, y’all! Glad I’m not not the only struggling with getting things started. I wanted to start a game for quite a while, but so far I haven’t kicked myself to actually do something about it. I hope we all get lucky
Hi, seems like I’ll have to become a dm of my group irl. Epps you mind sharing some secrets? I’m not sure about which books do I need.
Thank you, I’m sure it’ll be great, but getting it started is quite a challenge
That worked before, but I want to try it more… professionally? 😅
@mint sun do you know any rules I only know character and session 0 stuff
With the rules, correct character sheets etc
You can start with just the free basic rules (see messgaes pinned to channel)
Or just the SRD
Not that much, I knew a few back when I was following the dnd from viva da dirty league, but that was many moons back
Free Basic rules (includes SRD): https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Will it be enough, at least for the start?
Hello there chaps!
I’ll save this, thank you
Hello! How are you?
Kind stranger in here gave me a link already, but thank you
Just came back from my afternoon walks. Hope everyone is having a good day!
100%. I know a player who has stuck simply to PHD content for 4+ years. Sure, the other books can give you more options, but the PHD can last you foreverrr
That sounds wonderful. Gotta take some long walk myself, I haven’t been to nature all that much in quite a while
Thank you, I’ll get it later. Was quite confused by the number of these books 😅
Is there anyone here who can help me play I know some character and session 0 stuff but that's it
I completely understand. I believe 5e has 30+ books now so trust me when i say i get it lol. It's always good to see what some of the other books offer though because of the additional variety it provides.
What kind of help were you looking for, specifically?
@smoky adder well just how to play and also do I need anything irl
I want to look into it, but you know, it’s way too easy to get overwhelmed, and spending all the money on stuff you can’t possibly get to know at the start is not a good idea
ive been just reading whatever shows up in google when i search something
and getting a grasp on whatever i can
Afaik, you basically don’t need anything, it depends on how do you want to play. But don’t take my word for granted, dunno much myself tbh
Guys, what do we mean by dnd anyways? I’m looking for something official atm, but I’ve seen people argue that trpgs are dnds as well?
having physical stuff, or digital in some cases, at your fingertips that you know hasa all the info you need for the character you are making is super super helpful though cant be spending minutes looking things up on google in games every time you do anything
There’s some good links here to get you started with that: #dnd-newcomers message
D&D is one specific TTRPG.
Thanks
Cool, hopefully this won’t start a civil war then 😅 Just kidding, but you know
To give an analogy.
Elder Scrolls is a video game. Not all video games are Elder Scrolls, and if you wanted to play game focused on soemthing other than what Elder Scrolls does, it might be better to play one of those other video games instead of modding Elder Scrolls.
Elder Scrolls is also multiple video games. They are very similar in concept, but do not always have the same mechanics or even lore.
(You can replace Elder Scrolls with any other game franchise you're familiar with- Final Fantasy, Zelda, so on)
D&D is a TTRPG. Not all TTRPGs are D&D, and sometimes another TTRPG will better suit your needs. D&D is also multiple systems (editions). These editions all share the same concepts and some core ideas, but also are quite different at times in mechanics and lore.
Thank you for such an in depth analogy. I’ve heard a few times people talking about how open of a game this is, and I kind of went with it. Glad to hear an opinion of the wider community tho, really nice
Makes sense. I believe the 3 best books for a new player to get are the player's handbook, Dungeon master's guide, and monster manual. those 3 are dubbed "the core rule books". and everything revolved around them Tasha's cauldron of everything and Xanathar's guide to everything are also good additions
Id advise not getting the dmg, unless you are dming. Even when dming, a lot of it is not very practical.
Honestly unless you're running games or really want to read about items/monsters, you can skip both the DMG and MM pretty easily
Access to Magic item stats are handy if you ever get one.
surely, if you get a magic item, that means someone can tell you what item it is and you can just write it down
I would argue monster manual is less necessary as a player TBH
A lot of monsters and items are actually in the free srd
I was surprised by how many items are in it TBH.
Its only a few not in it from the PHB IIRC
Found a bundle with all three of them, thank you
That’s the thing, I’ll have to be the dm
For a player, I'd probably recommend the PHB, Xanathar's and Tasha's over the "core 3". Which is kinda funny to me but it what it is.
If you're actually reading the DMG I'd focus on the Running the Game chapter first. That and magic items are literally the only parts I've read more than once
Um hi
Even then, if you can only afford one, get the PHB. Monster manual is probably more helpful than the dmg for running adventures. Large parts of the dmg are just a guide to building your own world, which is only one perspective on a complex topic.
Hello. Doing good, mate?
that's fair. I just think the DMG helps new player's get insight about how certain game mechanics work.
A guide to building the world, you say? I’ll have some expense with world building and such, would I miss out on anything big?
It has some useful info. But it's buried in so much stuff they don't actually need
Starting out, you'll be best off playing prewritten adventures. Playing adventures is a much better tutorial on writing adventures than any "guide" could ever be.
Yeah, that’s the other part of this. Guide digging can get overwhelming
Personally I don't ever build my own stuff so the DMG mostly sits on my shelf and looks pretty
Unless I need a magic item or obscure combat rules for some reason
But people who do actually homebrew campaigns may get more use out of it. I still wouldn't recommend it for new players though.
Yeah, about those, I’ll think I’ll go the harder way. Thanks for the warning, but making up my own adventures and building my own world is some of the most fun things I’ve ever been doing. Tho I’m not sure about the start, I’d like to make it eye catching and all, but I’m also thinking about doing cop out like having my players crossing the border from Cyridiil 🤣
Just out of curiosity, what draws you to dming then? Haven’t had the opportunity to ask that many DMs about it, so I’m kinda curious
Well, still, if you haven't dmed before, you might get some utility out of rewriting/reusing content. Like take a dungeon map from a written adventure, but write a new context around it. If there's new players, the whole of Dragons of Stormwreck Isle can be neatly reformatted into most fantasy worlds as a "tutorial island".
Dragons of stormwreck, noted ☺️
Um yeah. Sorry I feel overwhelemed um Im new into this like never started but I want to try cause i watched this one dnd campaign with like drag queens so that got me interested so I wanted to try. Is there a resource (ideally free) where I can try to get started?
Look in here, @whole pond
Apparently it helps a lot
?new
You’re welcome ☺️ I hope you’ll have fun, and that you’ll share some stories with us in here.
Were you doing something similar before?
Me 👀
Bot down again, eh?
No, not really. I mean I do some online roleplaying but idk how different the stuff I do is to dnd
Sorry, which bot?
I enjoy running the game and seeing what players do in different situations. A favorite of mine is when I say something as a DM and go "that's not a sentence I ever thought would come out of my mouth". I just have zero interest in creating my own world or plotlines.
?new
There's a bot that usually reposts the pinned comments. It's not working right now. @whole pond - the pinned comments have some additional good resources. The handbooker helper series is really nice for a bite sized explainer video series.
Can’t really say myself, but it’s much different. The officially-ty makes it different imo. I’ve done this told play game a while back and some trpgs, but that’s about it, and it seems to not be enough anymore
The one that does this:
Oh, that’s cool!
Yeah Dyno is having a day... so you'll need to manually link to the important messages (or learn to look at the pinned messages on the channel).
Alright! Sorry, I sometimes forget pinned exist
Any roleplay experience will usually be helpful with the roleplay aspects of DnD. But as you saw from dungeons and drag queens (presume that's the one you saw!) the game then moves on to more crunchy rules particularly around combat.
Yeah, tho it’s a bit different to talk to people about it. I’ve seen tutorials, read some blogs, but usually it only scratches the surface. Dunno, does this make sense?
Sure does! Feel free to ask any specific questions here or in an appropriate channel (see #channel-guide to see all the many channels we have for D&D topics)
I will surely do that, it’s just that I just got here and wanted to talk to people, get different opinions and tricks and what not. Thank you
Ah, alright then! Also that was the game I was referring to haha. I'll check out the resources now, thank you all very much! 🥰
Yeah, that’s the great filter

Hello I'm new to dnd can anyone help me understand the game
I think I need to make a new character
What kind of character would you like to make? What types of things do you want them to do?
I want someone that can utilize vicious mockery and be able to deal damage up close
Do you have any preferences for out of combat situations?
Someone that can get money easily
The only class that can use Vicious Mockery is the bard class.
But you can make a melee type bard.
One thing is that, if you're using Vicious Mockery, you're not dealing much damage.
Swords Bards are a pretty good close-range Bard, but you'd be attacking enemies with your swords generally.
Vicious mockery is the funniest spell in dnd that's why I'm using it
So it seems you found your starting class.
This video from the Handbooker Helper series from the bot post above hilights the bard class: https://youtu.be/zvlROPHLdec?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
Ok I got my character
He's going to be a high elf bard using vicious mockery and friends, for my free cantrip I'm gonna choose fire bolt for the ranged option and I'll be going to Valor bard college
High elf grants me a free cantrip from the wizards stack of spells
Keep in mind that you choose at subclass at level 3.
Since you're new I recommend getting your bearing first with a level 1 character.
What if I just stay a bard with no subclass
You automatically gain a subclass you are 3 levels in a class.
Though this varies from a bit with certain classes.
Hmm i think I'm gonna go rogue for the stealth or paladin if I can get divine smite eventually
Alright, though keep in mind if you do pick Rogue or paladin, you won't have access to vicious mockery.
Or maybe fighter for the action surge
I wanted to highlight that for your free cantrip from choosing the high elf race, intelligence is your spellcasting ability for it.

Welcome to the hobby
the bot post above has everything you need to get started.
I already looked at that before but I can't find a game
Have you made a character yet
Not really
hihi i've never played dnd before. i joined looking for someone to teach me how to play if possible
The reason I want to highlight this is because each class needs you to prioritize one or two base states to be effective.
For example, Barbarians need a high strength score.
Rouges need high dexterity.
Bards need high charisma
Yes
You have multiple avenues to find a game.
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person.
Online options in this server:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Extra tip: Elaborate what you bring to the table, details that help a DM determine their compatibility with a player can make a difference.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in #adventurers-league
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
Other options
You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.
Welcome! There’s some good starter links here #dnd-newcomers message but did you have any specific questions?
@smoky adder nothing in particular. just someone to help me learn how to play. i was trying to teach myself but i was having a hard time understanding the rules
What’s one specific rule you wanted to know more about, to start?
i suppose the dice first. idk what dice means what

?tag new dice
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)
oh okay coolio
The d20 is the one you’ll use the most, any time your DM wants to determine whether your actions succeed or fail.
The rest are most commonly used for damage rolls.
Unfortunately, it's only a Wizard cantrip, so no Vicious Mockery. Same with Kobold but Sorcerer. (I had a brainfart too)
nice.
Correct.
Not to sound like an uncultured swine but does that mean if I choose fire bolt I can't have vicious mockery
It does not mean that.
Ok
There are many ways to learn cantrips and you will usually have more than one as a caster.
In case you want to book mark it, Check out the Handbooker Helper series as mentioned in the bot post:https://youtu.be/qQq_WsPFiDs?list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN
This video covers dice in case you want to revisit the topicl.
@true musk thank you ^.^
I think I'm gonna go with a wizard subclass because I can get access to some pretty powerful spells and even though I'm made of glass I think I'm still gonna be good
No it's bard with wizard subclass I think I did something wrong with the way I said that
In general, the main way to get access to certain spells is you play the class that has access to it.
In this case, Bards are the only class that have access to Vicious Mockery.
There are other ways, as Mute mentioned, you could get access to it through a feat such as the Magic Initiate Feat.
Feats are generally gained through reach certain levels in a class.
Then what subclass do I choose when I get to level 3 with my bard
a bard subclass
Eloquence, Swords, Lore for example, are all Bard subclasses
You can look in the class page
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard
to see what you have on DNDBeyond. Bard subclasses are "College of X" such as college of lore, college of swords, etc
I think I'm gonna choose college of valor
Great choice
Keep in mind that you'll get to choose your subclass at level 3, and depending on what kind of campaign you are playing. It make take a little while to reach that level.
It's time to finally make an actual character
A combination of bard and wizard would be a multiclass.
(And probably tricky to do if you’re new to the game.)
Yes.
Generally it's recommend to build an understanding of how individual classes work before deciding to multiclass.
Finally somebody said it 😂
Finally my bard is finished
A thousand times this
Lore Bards get the most variety of spells of any Bard.
Oh. you picked Valor.
I need to learn to read the whole convo before replying to things.
People generally don't mention it in this channel because it tends to be challenging for new players.
With the added risk that it can easily lead to a character that isn't good at either class.
As would easily be the case with a bard/wizard.
I finally finished making my character
I only mentioned it now to clarify the difference between that and a subclass.
The only problem is that I got unlucky with the strength roll and now he's made of glass
Your rolls don't typically get assigned in order.
Feel free to share it here or in #character-discussion .
strength doesn't have a bearing on how tough or fragile you are, and yeah you don't have to roll in order
You choose which scores get which numbers.
I ended up with 8hp
And on a bard, honestly, low STR isn't that bad.
You'll just want to use a finesse weapon, like a rapier.
I am using a rapier
I would swap your rolls and go with standard array or point buy.
If you ever roll for stats, the expectations is to do it with the DM you're going to be playing with.
that means you have 10 or 11 in Con, and are level 1, yes?
Yes
I have 11 con
You probably want your highest three scores in CHA, DEX, and CON.
it's recommended to stick with point buy or standard array at least until you find a DM, because as Zero said, a DM isn't likely to accept rolled stats they didn't see
Well back to the drawing board
Ok so I chose standard array and I'm FINALLY done
Umm how do I do that
in the settings for the sheet, privacy, set it to public
Assuming this is D&D Beyond, click your character name, then select Character Settings in the sidebar, and scroll to the bottom.
I think my character is already public so try to search Virsalor Drindrin
God that name sounds stupid
It won’t be searchable.
But if you’ve set it to public, then you can copy the URL and share that.
There's a lot to learn at the beginning. After you make a couple it becomes much easier.
Well let me know if he's at least good
Don't forget to equip your armor+weapons, but otherwise, it looks good!
If I sent my fiancé’ (and mine as well) characters in, could someone tell me if they looked okay to start playing? We’re fairly new to DnD and wanna make sure we get the jist 🙂
You can share it here but also we have a specific channel for discussing characters: #character-discussion.
Okay cool! Thank you for the info 🙂
Okay. I created a character, but now I don't know how to get back to my character sheet?
Depends on how you created it? If you're using DnDBeyond's online character sheet tool you can go to https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters and locate the sheet that way.
But if it's a PDF... then it's weherever you created and saved said PDF.
Unless it's a printed sheet... then in that case it should be in front of you /jk.
Okay. I opened it in chrome. That'll be easier going back and forth.
Thanks. 😊
Now I need a dungeon master. Lol

hello
Most groups are fine with new to D&D players as long as said players show effort to learn on their own (so the rest of the group doesn't have to do all the work) and even more importantly, said player vibes well with the group.
does anyone know any good ways to learn how to play dnd??
i got the starting pack and it looks wayy to confusing to learn by myself
Hey, soap. I'm new too. Maybe we can learn together? I don't even have dice. Lol
haha I just got some stuff on Saturday
Reading the rules is a great way to start (see pinned messages in the channel for links to the free basic rules)
Maybe watch some videos/streams of folks playing D&D to visually see and audibly hear how it's played.
Try your hand at making a character sheet or two.

how long do u think it’ll take to get the hang of dnd?
3 hours (e.g. a typical game session)
And then a lifetime of learning following... /jk
You can start by clicking that d&d beyond link, it helps you create a character.
I got mine. I'm a half elf rogue.
I’ll see what I am
It might take you a bit, I had to look up the languages.
Don't think you have to know everything or memorize everything - just start with the basics of how to create a character.
While you're searching, you might want to consider playing dnd adventures league while you try to find a permanent group.
I think it said I’m a wood elf.
how can I find a permanent group ??
I’m like really really new 😭

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Oh.
If you're more of a visual learner, I highly recommend the handbooker helper series mentioned in the bot post above.
They are short videos that cover different aspects of dnd and provide some quick guide to making a dnd character.
DnDBeyond has a mobile app
is it just called dnd?

I just downloaded it.
I heard about dnd a few months back and I really wanted to start playing and I just got the starting pack so now I’m gonna start putting effort into learning

It's even more handy than having it open in chrome.

There are some AL events that you might enjoy.
I wanna join a permanent game too.
The dungeon master creates the world that our characters are in.
That can take time.
One of the reasons why I recommend AL is because it gives you an opportunity to meet and play with different people, which can help in your search to forming a permanent dnd group.

No it's working now
There we go
See botpost above to learn
wait how do the dice work?
As Admirant mention, the Dungeon Master (DM for short), is the one that controls the npcs, the setting, and the one that tells you what happens when your character does things.
(An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)

ooh
so like if I’m the dm and I think it’s going to be really hard for someone’s character to beat whatever there trying to do I have to decide if it’s good enough??
the difficulty of a check should already be established in the adventure or stat block.. The player has to meet or beat the DC
Really, really suggest you start with the materials linked
If there is ever something that a player character wants to try that has the possibility of succeeding for failing and isn't covered in the adventure, there are DCs assigned to a level of difficult.
Very easy: DC 5
Easy: DC 10
Moderate: DC 15
Hard: DC 20
Very Hard: DC 25
Nearly Impossible: DC 30.
oh okk
What does DC mean?
Difficulty Class.
Difficulty Class
Ah.
Do remember, though just having a player say they want to try something and them rolling, doesn't gurantee a desired outcome is possible.
An ability check or saving throw has to equal or exceed the DC to succeed.
Anything less and it fails.
(Attack rolls are instead compared to the target’s Armor Class, or AC.)
I can't seem to find a game, even in the AL.
Cool.

hey
Welcome!
What do you guys recommend i take as a ranged weapon for rogue
Probably a crossbow
Hand crossbow right?
If you take crossbow you're limited to basically one shot per turn without getting Crossbow Expert feat.
Since the dm runs a specific type of dnd he doesn't allow the use of feats or gaining them
He did allow the use of optional feats like steady aim
But that's technically also class features
The he doesn't allow is things like polearm master and sentinel
Steady aim is not a feat. It’s an “optional class feature.”
It’s very important to remember that “feat” and “feature” are two different things
shortbow
if you cant take feats
hand crossbow if you can
Alright ty!
man,,,all that before i ever came to see what the server is about
Anyways I'm here mostly because of mild intrigue in dnd since i technically played once
@high merlinOMYAC is correct, the information needed to be able to promote your game is all found in #find-a-game, just read the instructions carefully

it takes a while to find a game with an appropriate timezone for europeans isn't it?
Try being Australian 😭
same pain i guess.
I've searched over 50 #looking-for-players applications, and all of them are either happening at 3AM or closed. i am out of my mind right now.
Make a looking for DM post, or you could check Roll20, the D&D Beyond forums, looking for community?
Ah, how lucky! Check this: #non-dnd-topics message
huh?
Australian it's fine, we all love in big cities
oh. this does help a bit. i posted a #750812887697588356 application a couple weeks ago, but i didn't get any traction. i doubt it will change if i will try again. i think i've been patient for about a month by now, i am not sure if this can be classified as patient but in my opinion it can be. D&D beyond doesn't support homebrew nor roll20 i assume. if there could be other servers where i could look for DMs i would like to see them.
Both d&d beyond and roll20 have certain levels of support for homebrew
It depends how extensive you are talking
A popular d&d youtuber (XPtoLevel3) regularly does bits of laughing at the worst homebrew he can find on DND beyond.

What type of character did you try to create?
Yeah, what have you got so far? Where did you get stuck?
I wanted to create a human wizard, but I am not as good with choosing the abilities, proficiencies and equipment, and the background thing 😄 as I have never played before 😄
What is the best healing/support class, mainly healing.
Life Cleric
There’s no right or wrong answer for proficiencies or background. Just pick whatever helps you tell the story you want to tell.
Your class and background will both provide specific options for your starting equipment.
And again, no right or wrong choice between those options.
By “choosing the abilities”, though, did you mean Ability Scores?

yippe
anything you can tell me before i dive in the world of dnd? any pros any cons, will this be a good experience if i just want something casual or will it be very try hard?
Ultimately D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together, so much of the experience is going to depend on who you play with.
If you want something casual, you can certainly find that kind of group.
Yes. The ability scores
Just be as clear as you can up front about what you are (or aren’t) looking for so that you can find the right match.
☝️ That should help with the basics, but if you’ve still got questions, ask away!
As a wizard, you’ll probably want INT, CON, and DEX as your top three abilities.
but like even if i want try hard, what would be try hard like whole leisurely period dedicated to dnd or just normal grinding you would do in a game?
Thank you 🙂
After that I just need a group that takes in newbies 😄
A typical D&D session usually lasts 2-4 hours. Sometimes that’s the whole game and you’re done; sometimes it’s just one part of a story that goes for years.
How long and how often a group plays is up to that group.
all there is, is paid lfg
i want a free session were someone can teach me and i can have fun
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction, whenever you’re ready.
I was already looking there, but didn't see anything specific for newbies 😕
Paid games are usually the easiest to get into, but free games are definitely the majority.
In our #looking-for-players section there shouldn't be paid games. That's what #paid-looking-for-game is for iirc
oh
In my experience, a lot of games are beginner friendly even if they’re not explicitly advertised that way. If you see one you’re interested in, it never hurts to ask.
There are what we call "dungeon crawls" in d&d where you essentially stay in one place and get into many encounters (fights, npc interactions, etc) over the session(s). But otherwise xp grinding doesn't super exist in d&d. You don't go out as a group and spend 4 hours killing boars to try abd reach a certain level.. doesn't really work like that.
Some groups don’t even use XP.
They just level up after major accomplishments within the story.
ohh do like some groups base their stories on already made fictional universes?
Definitely
D&D itself has a number of different official game settings.
Some groups use ones from movies, books, anime…
Some groups build a world of their own.
noice, i guess dnd is really really i mean really versatile
Yup
It’s really intended for like a fantasy medieval vibe, though. The farther you stray from that, the more effort it might be to adapt.
But there’s groups that do use it for scifi and stuff, too.
i would guess many people would use common settings and worlds like forcelia
Play Adventures League. It is very beginner friendly.
Each single session adventure is self contained. So you can play at your own pace.
It also allows you to rebuild your character to allow you to experiment and better understand how certain classes work.
hay, how do you work out saving throw modifiers? one of my players sent me their sheet and at 2nd level its got a +6 to wisdom, and that just felt a bit high to me, am i wrong in thinking that?
Adventures League? 😮

Short version, it’s D&D’s official community campaign that provides an opportunity to learn how to play and get to know the community.
Okay. That might be a stupid question, but where do I find groups of that?
is there a penalty for leaving midgame?
It’s okay to ask questions.
There are a few ways.
In this server https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081 has a few adventure league events for the full month of March
There’s no fine for leaving mid game.
However doing so can sour the relationship with the DM of the game because it takes time and work to prepare a game.
If you have a legitimate reason for leaving a game please communicate that with the table to avoid misunderstandings.
Does it make a difference which Tier the Event is?
Yes.
The way it works is that a DM will run a pre-made adventure that is designed for characters of a certain level range.
Each tier represents a different level range.
Tier 1 : levels 1-4
Tier 2: 5-10
Tier 3: 11-16
Tier 4: 17-20
Okay. Then I will check for the Tier 1 games. 🙂
Great .
Take your time reading the Adventures League player guide here: https://dnd.wizards.com/adventurers-league
Starting out you can make a level 1 or level 5 character.
nvm March is already fully booked 😄
If you’re referring to the Triden website, I still recommend joining the waitlist as there will be people who will cancel. So there is always a chance.
Not to mention those only show case some of their games, not all.
In general, the biggest appeal to Adventure League is that it follows certain guidelines so you can continue to play the same character in any AL game. Whether in person or online.

hey all. is there a current list of errata and changes for all the physical print books?
do you mean in the game or on this discord server?
game please
Yes, the free basic rules is linked in the bot post above.
Thank you!
you can also check out the Starter Set rules pdf that is free on the WotC webpage. its a bit shorter than the basic rules and gives you a head start
If you are more of a visual learner, check out the handbooker helper videos, also in the bot post above.
I see.. looks like i'll be studying for now lol
#dnd-rules might be able to answer your question.
thanks. hopefully there are ones that list the print book fixes that have been fixed on the digital ones. or at least a list of the digital ones so i can print those out and keep them with the books. i miss when sage advice came out at the end of like each year.
the Essentials Kit rule book is a little bit longer but goes into making a character. that is like the absolute shortest official and free thing to learn the rules. its like 64 pages or so, if i remember. and there are big pictures, and part of all that is a collection of monster stats and spell descriptions.
Oh.. do I have to buy it? Hajsha
to actually make a character and play yhe game you dont need to learn the monster stats from the essentials kit. and you can just look up the spells as needed.
Only content from the Basic Rules is free. You otherwise have to buy it or someone with access to it shares it with you.
Can I ask why? I mean why do you need to pay for that /g
If you’re looking for a budget friendly approach, you can buy the individual satyr race for $2 USD
Of course you can.
Questions are always welcome.
Oh okay, I thought the races were free, that's sad
Only the races listed with the Basic Rules are free. https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
To answer your question it’s because that’s extra content and at the end of the day the game is a product.
Because it's a product that costs money to make and therefore is sold for money
Why would it be free?
at level 2, how many proficiencies in skills does a player get?
It would depend on their background, class, and any other features they have
There's no one answer
It's based on your character level, you look up your characters level in any class table
There's a proficiency bonus column
I'm new to all of these so I didn't know.
Are online DnD's also require payment?
It’s okay that you are new.
We all were when we joined the hobby.
I should note that even with the free basic rules, you can get a lot of playtime out of it.
For context, I have a half elf draconic sorcerer from the free basic that I continue to play since I made the character 4 years ago.
Like online games and such
There are games that have a fee, yes, but they're not the default
I see
Generally no.
D&D is a social game that just needs people to get together to play.
Great to hear! Just need the friends 🥲
There are dnd events that hosts games for free.
Sorry ig
Check out the events calendar in the server for virtual dnd weekend events.
The best way to find people to play with is by interacting with the dnd community.
Is it better to create a character first and then look for a group to join?
Probably the other way around
Why so?
Not every D&D game is run the same and some game options such as subclasses, races, or feats may not be offered by a given DM
Character concepts are good rather than a full character prior to joining a group. You should fit the character to the game being played.
Aaah, I see I see, kinda makes sense for me
That makes sense
Ayup
For example, say you make a Chronurgy Wizard Owlin with the Astral Drifter background, and join a game run by a DM that doesn't allow
- Critical Role content
- Magic the Gathering content
- Backgrounds that grant level 1 feats
You'd have to remake your character
For a traditional dnd campaigns, it’s best to find a group first then create a character that is compatible with the campaign you are going to play.
For community campaigns like Adventure League, you create your character first.
To a less extreme degree, if you make a character who's a fighter that participated in a war, that's not going to work in a game where there haven't been any recent wars
Another question: when you're not in combat is everything also turn-based? Like say we're in a room and checking for things like traps or treasure
Usually no, but a turn-based system could be used.
That sort of thing is maybe more common in a dungeon that just in town.
there is the concept of a "dungeon turn"
No-but-yes
Initiative is just a way of handling time at a granular, 6-second increment level for when it matters
Once it stops mattering, you stop tracking it with that level of granularity
So does it eventually depend on the dungeon master?
And situation
Think of it like a dial that can be turned to slow down the passage of time to make decision making easier
As mentioned by Omegon, there are other forms of initiative where you're still tracking time in discrete blocks, but not as small increments as combat
For example, a dungeon turn can be 10 minutes rather than 6 seconds
yeah 10 min are common, but it can be any amount of time the DM deems reasonable for certain tasks
What would a background be for a Druid?
Any of them!
But Outlander is an easy fit.
It all just depends on what kind of story you want to tell.
Yep any background can be paired with any class.
Some pick backgrounds that fit the theme of a character.
Others will backgrounds that grant skill proficiencies that compliment a class's strengths.
important is that your background is what you did BEFORE you became an adventurer. so a Druid could have grown up in the wilds, but maybe the grew up and lived in civilisation until they had enough of it and wanted to connect more with nature, as an example
Ideally it helps explain why you’re an adventurer, too.
Whether that’s because their background led them to it, or because they left their background behind, or something else.
Is that American Time or EST?
The discord post in particular uses a tool called hammertime, so the times you see are displayed in your time zone.
oh - haha okay. gtk
Does a character with the paralyzed condition block a hallway that's less than 5 feet wide? say, a character was paralyzed, there is a line of other enemies behind the first monster. They cannot stack, correct?
It becomes a bottleneck?
That character can be used as cover. Allies can move through the paralyzed character as difficult terrain.
Your character will level up as you play D&D; the DM will either award XP towards levels, or tell you when you level up, or some combination of the two
That's more for #dm-discussion than a newcomer question.
well, I dont know because I am new, LOL
This server doesn't actually host games here but serves as a discussion/workshopping space for d&d.
Also a helpful spot for newcomers like yourself to ask questions about the game and learn the basics.
The server does provide ways for dungeon masters and players to connect via #find-a-game though
Hello! I’m completely new to dnd (I’ve been playing Baldurs Gate and also watched people playing dnd so I got an idea of how things work in a very general sense). I was wondering… I know there’s race, class, and background but do you have the liberty to play around with the character beyond that? I mean like, for example, I have a character (currently just an original character, not for dnd) who is “human” but she was actually artificially created rather than born, so she is an “artificial” human to put it like that. My question is if I were to use her for a dnd game and this didn’t add any significant change to her abilities, is there a way a character can be like that? Or would it have to be strictly tied to the characteristics of a human? Hope I explained myself well.
Would depend on your DM but generally yes. Adding flavour to your character is encouraged. The only issue that may crop up is if you're adding features to your character. Like giving a human darkvision for example.
It sounds like your idea is entirely flavour which is great!
You may want to consider a Warforged, they're constructs and maybe you could flavour them to appear human.
I’ll check that out. Thanks ^^

I mean there really isn’t a classed way to say like beginner or adept.
I think it’s mostly just your experience level and how comfortable you are with the system. So I mean I can say I’m an expert (I’m not) but it doesn’t really mean much
So I guess just be comfortable with the system and you can decide what you call yourself
thanks for the help. i just dont wanna jump into a fairly knowledgable party and then slow people down
Don’t worry about it, I’ve found that learning D&D works best when played
Usually people don’t mind
aight, thanks for the help dude
That'd be a question for #third-party
TTRPGs like DND 5e have A LOT of rules, and being classed outside of "Beginner" usually comes with time rather than knowledge.
You can hone your experience on being a rule-studying god, being an excellent roleplayer, or a creative combatant.
And those are just one of the few real-world specializations players may find themselves grouped within.
Thanks for clearing it up

Not from your race, no. If it did, it would say so.
It’s pretty rare for racial features to get added benefits at higher levels.
are the six stats all initially decided by a dice roll?
Usually the DM will decide the method used, but while dice rolls are portrayed by the book as being the main method, it's actually the least common as far as I am aware.
Point Buy is the most popular amongst most players, but standard array can also be helpful for a new player.
(I'm making these statements somewhat declaratively without data...in reality, this is just my impression from lots of conversations about this)
One thing you shouldn't do is roll dice for a characters stats without first agreeing that with the DM. Almost nobody is going to let you turn up at a game with a character sheet that has rolled stats better than point buy.
Yeah, there's been this weird coincidence where out of all the people that have tried to enter a character with rolled stats in my games, only one has ever been below average. Funny how that works (:
(But yeah there's a reason most DMs will want to see your rolls 😛 )
fascinating

Where can I find a characters advantage, disadvantage, Immunes and resists?
You’d need some rule that say to add one of those to your character sheet.
From your race or class, or a feat or a magic item.
Some classes give resistances and advantages
Some races do the same
But you don’t have any of those until something says you do.
It’s rare to get an immunity though
I think the only immunities come from very powerful magic items.
Okay, for some reason I thought they'd be in a column on the sheet or something
Only one I can think of is a fizban Dragonborn chromatic version
Resistances usually have a small box on the sheet, but advantages are usually given in abilities. So they would be put in the same place as the ability
Ah, as a temporary one, yeah.
Under what descriptor would that be?
I think labeled resistances (I do not have access to a sheet lol)
Can I dm you?
If it's the default sheet, a lot of stuff just gets tossed in the "Features and Traits" section
Where something is listed isn't really as important as you knowing what it means, for the most part
Alright thank you
also worth noting that most cases of advantage and disadvantage are circumstantial, rather than being a permanent thing
I'm dming a one shot (first time) so our actual dm can get some lore done this week, and I was just wondering what some good long ranged enemys would be?
If you're DMing for the first time, I'd recommend running a pre-written adventure.
Oh man where do I start😭🤦🏿♂️

okay thank you
Dnd beyond has a free pre-written adventure you can use.
You can also get others at dmsguild
Bro literally explained everything
I’ve been dnding on console this whole time I just thought it was less dnd more Rp but it’s more or less what I was doing
Are you referring to Baldurs Gate 3?
The kobold is a 1/8CR creature that has a sling in its statblock, if you want a human threat you could take the Guard statblock, and do a little cheeky homebrew to give them a longbow/shortbow instead
ah okay
What are you having trouble with specifically?
So, I need some D&D Beyond tech answers. Can anyone assist?

But if you’ve got any specific questions, feel free to ask!
how do i dm in a maner of speaking
i don’t recommend DMing until you’ve played at least a few games as a player tbh
because my family wants to play dnd but theyve never played before
i just dont know what to do
has anyone in your fam played before?
well my dad played 30 years ago but that was just one scission
mom didn't know what it was intill a week ago
if you don’t know how to play either it might end up being a blind leading the blind kinda situation, if you’re okay with that. it just might be a bit clunky until you all get a feel for the rules.
Start with a pre-written single session adventure, also known as a one shot.
