If you have a +2 modifier to something like charisma, but you aren’t proficient in persuasion, do you still add the +2? Or is the proficiency there to add an additional bonus
Yep you still add your ability modifier
Ok cool.
Proficiency lets you add your proficiency bonus, which scales as you level.
I know that much
So if you were level 1 with 14 Charisma, but no prof in Persuasion you'd roll 1d20 +2 (Cha bonus).
If you were proficiency in Persuasion you'd roll 1d20 +2 (Cha) +2 (Prof bonus) for +4 total.
Yea I’ve been doing it like that I was just making sure cause my friend said he thought it only applied if proficient
Both new so yknow
It’s a shame most people only play once a week or even every two weeks. I hyperfixate so hard I just wanna play like every other day because I have so many ideas and I’m super into it and by the time that one day comes once a week I’m like damn that was it? Idk
I mean I get why. Specifically the dm would probably get the most burnt out quickly without that much time to think of ideas between sessions
As the DM...I want to play more often!
It’s just having some trouble this morning.
Poor Dyno 🤒
I have a group with friends and, as they're all currently studying, we only meet so many times a year 😦
XD fair. Maybe I should try to put together a group for people here who are available more like 2-4 times a week
But I’m definitely not DM material so I don’t know how I’d go about that
I think if I really wanted to DM more, I would probably set up a paid Beginner campaign to get people rolling. But I am concerned about meeting peoples expectations as a service provider.
Yeah, maybe
Yeah I dunno how I’d gather a group as a non dm
Try checking the options in #find-a-game for starters.
The thing is I either have to have an established group to ask for a dm or be a dm to ask for other players
Maybe I could find a dm first then have them make a post after
After we figure out the general stuff
if i were to remake a monk build designed solely for unarmed strike (devious hands) what would yall suggest i can paste my current build
Depending on what you mean by "remake", then either #character-discussion or #homebrew could help.
not sure js want him to punch harder
If you want someone to look over your build and suggest alternatives from the official rules, then #character-discussion.
If you're looking to step outside of the official rules, then #homebrew.

GM! Does anyone know where the best place to go for a new player would be? I kinda just want to learn how to play. And I may be interested in learning to DM as well.
You've found it!
There's some good links here to get you started #dnd-newcomers message but did you have any specific questions?
For DMing, I'd recommend starting with this guide. Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series is also excellent. The pinned comments in #dm-discussion should be helpful, and that channel in general is a good place to dig into the details of DMing.
Thanks so much! I will check it out💯
Hello

Ok thank you
Feel free to post any question in this channel.
That's a pretty high bar to aim for, honestly!
The unwritten rules vary more from table to table.
For every table whats all way the rule
That's not a thing
That's genuinely impossible to say. Even the rules of the game can be ignored at any given table.
Focus on the written rules
You'll pick up on the "unwritten" ones once you join a group
Maybe a good general rule is "Don't be a jerk to the others you play with." Hard to generalize beyond that.
Ok thank you
What about evil one shpt and every bpdy needs to be a jerk
if everyone at the table is on board, then thats fine
but this needs to be discussed beforehand
There's a huge difference between "My character is a jerk" and "I as a player am a jerk."
also even in an evil party, your characters still need to be willing to work together on some level
Players at my table have been selfish, dishonest, and unscrupulous - but they are all still on board with getting the team to the goal, which is the main thing.
If you're completely new to D&D, I'd say focus on making a cooperative, likeable, helpful and heroic character
That way the nature of your character will make things go smoother and give you more room to learn the game
Thank you all for answering my question
This article has some general advice for good table etiquette:

Hey I got a question about dnd. So I’m the DM in our campaign but I don’t know how to narrate a dungeon if that makes sense
#dm-discussion would be a better place to ask about DMing.
I'd suggest reading through Peril in Pinebrook for a good practical example.

hi hi
Hey guys, new DM here looking for some insights on forgotten realms, i'm planning to make an expedition campaign 🙂 With mysteries, puzzles and battles in an alternate plane not so terrifying as the Far Planes, but more like a counter balance for it
What kind of info are you looking for specifically? #dnd-lore is for discussions about the history and such, whereas #dm-discussion can help with running games.
a certain year to start my campaign, i know there is a lot i can base my campaign depending on things that happen during the late years, so thats my doubt
thanks!!

well i know a good amount. however, im still new
ty for the resource
omg thank youuu
I've only played once with my family, and I desperately need a new hobby lol
im so going to read it
aw yes definitely go into dnd. its so much fun and honestly i learned most of what i know as i got into the game.
I need to play more games for the experience, I'm incredibly rusty at roleplaying so I need to warm up to that too
are you in any games atm?
nope, at least none are confirmed yet lol
aww maybe you could go on roll20 to find some?
I might, I was on there a while ago and barely knew what I was doing

i think dino dude just helped you to find a game!
If you want to look for additional games outside the server, I made a guide for just that purpose.
Thank you for the guide :D
what about you? :0
woahh lucky ;3;
ikr 🤭
ok so i dont know anything about dnd except its a RPG where imagination is the limit and the players going off topic,

But basically, it's just you and your friends telling a story together. Most of you control only a single character within that story, while one of you -- the DM -- presents the world, the creatures, and the events that challenge those characters.
And along the way, the rules of the game and the random roll of the dice help give shape to that story.
Hey I'm new i want to play this game online. Can anyone tell me where i can play? Any app or website?
?tag new online
The simplest answer is yes, in DnD your class provides 99% of all your skills and ability progression.
That being said, putting levels into more than one class at once (known as multiclassing) can be very complicated in DnD, and can easily result in a sub-par character build when tried by new players.
There are other ways to get access to new abilities for your character though: ask your DM if they allow Feats. If they do, every 4 levels you can pick a feat to customize your character instead of increasing their stats
How does armor work for enemies? and how does the DM determine it?
Creatures have their armor class (AC) in their statblocks.
And a good start can make a big difference! For example, if you picked the Criminal background when you created your character, you'd start the game with the ability to pick locks, even without being a rogue
As for how it works, the attacker rolls a d20, adding any bonuses; if it meets or exceeds the target's AC, the attack hits.
Yep!
got it
so does that apply the same for players when the monsters attack? like roll for hit then roll for damage according to armor
Yep.
Hi, I have a question about warlocks
Ask away!
Are there certain beings you have to choose to make a pact with or can your patron be whatever you want?
The subclasses each give a sort of "theme" for your patron.
But none of them are dedicated to any one specific being.
And you could always talk to your DM about changing the theme of a subclass (without changing the actual rules).
Well, I suppose you could talk to them about changing the rules, too, but DM's will be generally more inclined to accept the first suggestion.
For example, one subclass is "the fiend" which would be your classic "deal with the devil" sort of warlock, while another is "the great old one" which is more like an eldritch horror. You get to decide what devil, entity, etc is your actual patron, but the powerset you get is based on the subclass you pick, which will be what you are themed around
Thanks, that's basically what I thought, just wanted to make sure I understood everything correctly 👍
It's worth discussing with your DM, whatever your choice there.
Since they know the most about what setting you're playing in, they might be able to give you some specific choices or help you find something that fits well with the story.
Haha yeah I don't actually know anyone else who plays DND, I only started getting interested in it a few days ago. But when I do find someone to play with I'll keep that in mind.
I'd recommend keeping it vague to start, then. Just a rough idea of the type of patron you're looking for.
Going for a specific choice, like Orcus, runs the risk that Orcus may not even exist in the world you end up playing.
Whereas a loose idea like "I want a powerful demon who wants to reshape the world" can be more easily adapted.
Gday cobbers how we doin
Or pair them together: "I want a powerful demon trying to reshape the world, like Orcus" gives the DM a clear understanding of both the type of patron you're looking for and why.
Welcome!
What's the best way to get into a party? Just go through the lookin for players tab?

do i only need a character sheet and then i can start joining for a game? (if i know basic of gameplay and rules too)
is it that simple?
Use #find-a-game to find a game that you might be interested in and is accepting new players. No guarantees if you’ll be accepted, but as long as you have a character concept in mind at least that should be fine
ok thnx i have a character sheet tho
I just made a character sheet. I’m so confused on how to move forward.. because I’m a beginner and BARELY read the book😪
Different DMs may allow or not allow certain content so i wouldn’t get too in-depth into making a character until you’re accepted into a game or unless the DM says otherwise
Making a character is a good start, but if you don't know the rules much, you won't be able to use them well, so I'd recommend giving them a read. Once you have the gist of those down, you should look for a group. There are channels in this server for just that purpose.
i hope its not too hard
The biggest issue you’ll usually have is scheduling haha. I would look for a DM that runs their games as close to RAW (rules-as-written, without custom “homebrew” rules or rule modifications) for your first session
thankyou
Will thou of dnd, lend thy knowledge of what the hardest boss in dnd is?
Not a newcomer question really - try in #dnd-discussion
Basically a monsters overall threat level is noted by their Challenge Rating (CR).
CR 30 is the highest possible, of which there are four monsters.
- Aspect of Bahamut
- Aspect of Tiamat
- Tarrasque
- Tiamat
Foreknowledge of enemey abilities is likely metagaming anyways. If you’re a DM, there’s #dm-discussion
But yeah, not newcomers
hi
Alright, thanks for summing that up
ive never played dnd before
i dont know how to used discord well
how do i find a party to play with

After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
if I wanted to start a dnd campaign as dungeon master what are some things I should prepare beforehand?
- In Dungeons & Dragons, one person serves as the Dungeon Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The DM runs the adventure for the players, who navigate its hazards and decide which paths to explore.
- Learn how to be a Dungeon Master with this YouTube video or D&D Beyond article.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- Decide what kind of campaign you want to run. Here’s a few good options for new DMs.
- Get advice from your fellow Dungeon Masters in #dm-discussion and #dm-world-building.
And that's good chance the DM will give them a warning and/or get kicked.
I read the free basic rules and i think i get the gist of it what do i do now
Is there any easy way to get like an auto fill for sheets or smth? Like a site, I have had dming experience in other RPGs however it's my first time in dnd itself, my books have recently arrived but I have had a little trouble with my players to actually fill in their sheets, sometimes because they don't decide or there is something I can't seem to find or I take too long to do it, and at such a slow rhythm I don't manage to complete all of their sheets so is there an easier way?
(I just suck at basic things)
Sorry for yapping 🙏
But please I need help
Try D&D Beyond. It's very good for making character sheets
It also has a quick start function to make characters really fast
Oh ok, I mean something with more options like with more content and things to choose from
Dnd beyond can have all the content, you just have to buy the books it’s from
The Roll20 Charactermancer doesn't suck, though it's a bit clunky. And personally I find it easier to manually enter things into than D&D Beyond. But it's hard to use those sheets unless you're actually playing on Roll20
One of my players wants to be a halfling, should I put him in a room with stacks of mimic books surrounding him?
Or would that be too damn evil
I have dumped 350 hours into bg3 sense December, Just joined this channel and reddit, I want to play but have zero idea on how to even start the process!
And if he tries to climb should I use it's bite action
Oh right sorry
I would like to start playing dnd! Not bg3, sorry for the confusion
Ah, my bad
Have a look at the basic rules. They’re linked in the pinned messages of this channel
Hi I'm looking for a DM and when I tried looking for one it says I have to wait for March 7th and I don't know why
If you mean making a post on #750812887697588356 , there's a 1 week or so cooldown between when you can post again

A helpful tip: don't ask to ask. Just ask away. Be specific about what you're having troubles with. Is it Ability Score modifier calculation? Is it Feat selection? Is it leveling up? Is it related to Roll20?

Hello, dear DnD-Enthusiasts 🙂 I am glad that I am now a part of this big server and hope to find a game to take part in 🙂
Thank you

I'd be a little cautious about what AI has taught you, as it does often get rules and information wrong (It doesn't understand what it's saying, it repeats things it's scraped, including other editions and misinformation on D&D).
The above resources can help get firmer readings on the rules. The basic rules are free, and the handbooker helper series breaks them down more.
You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
The rules really click into place when you play, so one of the first big steps is finding a game. You can make practice PCs while looking for a game as that's one thing you can do by yourself (with help form here when you need it!)

Yeah I wouldn’t take a test based on what I’ve learned from gpt but it’s great in some aspects. I was really having trouble understanding certain calculations and gpt as not helping at all. I have the basic rule book downloaded on the D&D beyond app, but it’s a lot
Go ahead and ask what you need.
Yeah there can definitely seem like a lot of rules at first (and there are) but you don't need them memorised or to read all of them before playing. Better to just have a rough idea of how things like combat and making a PC work. Like more things, it clicks into place as you play and far better to know where to look up rules when you need them.
Do skill proficiencies have any impact on combat?
Yes.
In general no, but occasionally.
For example being proficient in athletics might help establish grapples, and being proficient in acrobatics or atheletics can help avoid being grappled.
Some do, some don’t really come up
The most important ones for combat are athletics, acrobatics (as mentioned), perception and stealth
Athletics and Acrobatics most often. Stealth and Perception can do. Intimidation on occasion. Arcana to recognise spells.
History might get you details of a monster's weaknesses.
In terms of smacking monsters or casting spells, skills are not relevant.
Classes and subclasses might have specific abilities that might use a skill in combat, but then that's more for that class and would be getting a bit too technical for n here.
I’d say that’s more likely a nature, religion or arcana check depending on the monster
Oh, there's a specific rule somewhere and yes, alternative skills may work but one thing people like doing is talking about how monsters were famously defeated and that's just History.
History isn’t really for monster knowledge imo
But DMs do run these skill checks differently
So here is the example A.I. was just not helping me with. A level 1 Dragonborn (Race) Paladin (Class) is proficient in Insight, Intimidation, Athletics, and Persuasion. They have a constitution of 10. Their breath weapon is a 15ft cone that requires creatures to make a saving throw. The dc for that saving throw is 8 + the constitution modifier + the proficiency bonus. Would they be 8 + 2 + 2?
Modifier for ability score of 10 is zero.
Oh, my b. I did the math bad there. Okay I see that. But other than that is everything the way it’s supposed to be?
Your paladin gets to pick two skills from Athletics, Insight, Intimidation, Medicine, Persuasion, and Religion.
I answered the wrong question, sorry. Yes about the ability score modifiers.
Or +1 for every two points above 10, -1 for 9 and another -1 for every two points below 9.
(As Jackie said, (Score -10)/2 rounded down for above 0)
And Looks like everything else is about right.
Breathweapon cone/line can depend on what type of dragonborn you pick from the PHB.
As Smith pointed out, Paladins pick two skills, and then you'd get another two from a background you pick. So those skills can be doable.
you should try filling in a character sheet
Okay cool. So now let’s say hypothetically that Paladin had a profficiency in survival which falls under constitution. That does nothing when determining the dc for the saving throw previously discussed?
survival fallsunder wisdom
and skills and saving throws are seperate things
survival is a wisdom skill while a saving throw is something totally different
I probably should start over with the rulebook. I think the gpt has really programmed me with a lot of wrong ideas. Thanks for the clarity.
Proficiency bonus is how good you are with skills based on your character's experience level. At level 1 it's +2.
In general the basic rule is for a skill, save or check related to an ability you roll 1d20 (twenty sided dice) + That Ability Modifier.
So for constitution checks you'd roll 1d20+0, because you have no Con bonus.
If you are proficient in that roll somehow, you also add your Prof bonus, which is a flat number that scales as you level (+2 at lower levels)
(This also includes attack rolls)
If you go on D&D Beyond it can help you put together a basic paladin. Use the standard array for ability scores and select the starting equipment option, then share it in #character-discussion with any further questions. Don't worry if you can't get it perfect the first time, this is practice.
I think I have a finely tuned Paladin, I’m just learning the combat mechanics now and how the math is done and I got confused because I was used A.I. as my learning tool and after 15-20 messages A.I. begins to go dumb. I feel like I understand that game I just was curious as to if skills you are proficient in give buffs to certain rolls. Like for example if you have to do a strength saving throw and you have proficiency in athletics if you get some level of buff from that skill proficiency. That’s where I was like ???
saving throws and skills are different
atlethics is a skill that if you are proficient in it you may add your proficiency bonus to the skill check

So Abilities can only impact Skill Checks but skills cannot impact Ability Checks is a good way to look at it?
?tag new skills
Skills
A skill represents a specific aspect of an ability score. Proficiency in a skill lets you add your proficiency bonus to ability checks that involve that skill, making you more likely to succeed.
- Strength. Athletics
- Dexterity. Acrobatics, Sleight of Hand, Stealth
- Constitution. (none)
- Intelligence. Arcana, History, Investigation, Nature, Religion
- Wisdom. Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, Survival
- Charisma. Deception, Intimidation, Performance, Persuasion
Write your ability modifier next to each skill for that ability. If you’re proficient with that skill, add your proficiency bonus as well.
?tag new saves
No tag saves found in category new.
Abilities are your base modifier in that sense.
As mentioned, for attacks, saves and checks (including skill checks) It's:
1d20 + Ability Modifier + (prof bonus if proficient)
They don't affect or synergise with each other. Having proficiency in Strength Saves doesn't affect strength checks or attack rolls using strength and vice versa.
But increasing Strength score (and thus mod) boosts all of them.
I think I understand it more. I think I’m over complicating it because my first experience with checks in on Baldur’s gate so when I roll I see a bunch of +1’s on things and feel like there was more to it
Baldur's Gate 3 would be the same for this. Mostly it's bonus came from things like guidance or so on.
But otherwise the same. 1d20 + Ability Mod + Prof bonus (If proficient). (And then like -1 or something if you've let Astarion give you a hicky)
Thanks a bunch. You guys are some smooth operators
So i bought the dragons of stormwreck isle starter set, and i was curious how to get stuff like maps.
are you playing irl or online?
assuming you’re playing irl i like to use dry erase maps. you draw whatever maps you need with a marker and it’s reusable. you can find them pretty easily at your local game store or online retailer like amazon for 20-40 bucks.
it’s a pretty low-cost way to play, especially in the long term if you end up using lots of maps.
if you’re playing online you can get virtual maps from the modules on dndbeyond.
if you need lowcost diy tokens i like to print out creatures and put them on playing card stands.
I dont really know how to go about making my character i read the chapters but i just dont know what to do can someone help
Any part you're getting stuck on?
You can always use Dndbeyond as a guide, and just go through the character creation steps, bit by bit

I also like going to the main pages for some of these (races, classes) as they help give bite size summaries https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
(Focus on ones in the Player Handbook / Basic Rules)
Did you have a certain kind of character in mind?
I was thinking of going for a half-elf sorcerer
I dont know what to do after that basically i read the chapters but its just so much stuff
Best to try and go through bit by bit.
So you've picked your Race (Half-elf).
If you're filling out on dndbeyond it can add all that for you, but if filling out yourself, fill in what half-elf gives you into your sheet. See if you can figure out where things go, and ask if you get stuck.
For the attributes (+2 Charisma, +1 to two other abilities) just note them down elsewhere for now, because you'll add that to your stats later.
Yeah im on dndbeyond right now
You don't need to note everything down. Like for Darkvision you might just want to put 'Darkvision 60ft'. If you needed to know exactly how darkvision works later, you can just look it up.
Alright
Getting your ability scores is probably the next important step, if you haven’t done that yet.
?tag new abilities
Abilities
Six abilities provide a quick description of every creature's physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
For each ability, your character has an ability score, a number from 1 to 20. There are three ways to determine ability scores, and your DM will let you know which to use. (If you don’t have a DM yet, choose Standard Array or Point Buy.)
- Roll the Dice. Roll 4d6 and record the total of the highest three. Do this six times, and then assign each total to a different ability.
- Standard Array. Assign each of the following numbers to a different ability: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Point Buy. Choose your own ability scores by spending points.
After assigning your ability scores (and adding any bonuses from your race), determine your ability modifiers, a number from -5 to +5, using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table.
So should i hold out until i join a group or should i choose standard array now
Yeah, they're a big step. They're at step 3 in character creation, because your class tells you what stats you might want to prioritise. For Sorceror Charisma, Constitution and Dexterity can be important, especially Charisma.
You can always use standard array for now and make a practice PC.
You'll like be able to use this idea for an actual group, and if they want different stat generation, it's not that hard to change them.
I chose for my proficiencies deception and insight what does that do
You can look up what each skill does https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Skills
But deception is about misleading and lying, while insight is about judging what people are feeling and if they're being truthful or not with you so on.
Oh ok so im guessing deception can be used for tricking people to do something that benefits us?
Can be yep. A lot of this game is RP, so it's also how creative you can get with skills and talking with your DM about your goals and what skill they think is appropriate to use if any.
Ah ok
Im going to hold out on doing my score rolls until i join a party i think anything else i need to do afterwards?
Oh wait i see them description and equipment
What are these options for the characters background? Acolyte, Criminal/spy, Folk hero, Haunted one, Noble, Sage and soldier?
You might want to use standard array anyway for now, just so you have stats you can use to figure out things that will come up like Dexterity affects AC, Consitution affects HP so on
Oh ok
For backgrounds you can look through them for one that suits your PC.
In general a background gives you: Two skill proficiencies, and two tool/language proficiencies, and a minor feature.
You can make your own and choose the proficiencies that fit, but for the feature you'll need to talk with your DM or borrow one from another official background that fits.
I might go for one of the official ones as its my first time
How can i see what they all do
Ty
Also if you choose one in the character creator, it should show what that background gives you below
Yeah it does
But whats the d8 personality trait, d6 ideal and d6 bond stuff below acolyte
Would i roll and choose whatever number it gives me
Those are personality traits. You can roll and take what ever you get, or you can make your own. They're to help RP and so your DM can get a quick idea of your character from their sheet.
Oh alr ty i’ll do that now
I did it but where can i see what i got on dndbeyond
I pressed randomise and it showed for a second what it rolled but i cant seem to find where its written
it'll be in the Description section
What do i put in faith theres nothing to choose do i make up a name for a faith?
talk to your DM about what faiths there are in their game/setting
That's probably one best discussed with your DM.
Ok so i skip that part
But if you've got a vague idea, like "sun god", you could make note of it there for now.
Alright thank you guys
Hello there everyone! Just curious if any of the veteran DMs out there could point me to a podcast or video where it discusses a broad range of topics relating to your early stages as a DM.
I have watched a few people on YouTube, and DM Lair was fairly helpful, Luke makes very good videos, but I’m looking for something less formal and structured. I don’t need a PP presentation, just casual conversation or someone talking to the camera and not reading a script or prompt.
Anyone have any podcast episodes they might recommend? Thanks!
-Turalus
hmmm... The Dungeon Dudes youtube channel sounds like it might be something you'd be interested in.
Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
There are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to RPG, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
Many thanks, I will check em out.
I planned to stop in there and make myself present as well, figured newcomers would be the place to start. And holy cow, thanks for this list! Google only represents so many results fairly. Huge thanks yous!

But did you have any specific questions?
If you want, I can help you
none specific. My counselor said he plays and a good chunk of my friends play so I was interested and wanted to learn more
yes please lol /nf
eep the links are all so much- can someone dumb it down for me ;w;
At it's simplest, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.
Most of you control only a single character in that story.
One of you, the Dungeon Master (DM) controls the world, events, creatures, and challenges those characters meet.
The rules for D&D and the rolls of the dice help give shape to that story.
The absolutely most basic explanation is: The DM describes the world and the situation your characters are in. Then you describe what you would like to do. Then your DM describes how that action affects the world. If there is a chance your action might fail, the DM will decide how difficult that task is, and assign it a "Difficulty Class" (DC) which is a number from 1 to 30. You roll a d20, and add your skill modifier to that number. If you roll equal to or greater than that DC number you succeed. If you roll below it, you fail. Then the DM describes how that success or failure impacts the world, and you do it all again
There are more complicated rules for combat, but if you understand this high level concept, you will understand most of the game
The introductory demo here gives a more hands-on explanation of those concepts, through a fun little choose-your-own-adventure game.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
It's like 5-10 minutes long, and specifically designed for beginners.
Should I play DND if I don't have a consistent schedule or will that be a hindrance to the fun of the group?
Depends on the group.
I think that depends on how consistent the group is
If you need a more flexible schedule, there's definitely options.
I mean you can ask them.
One-Shots are stories completed in a single session; no need to schedule a follow-up.
I can't really convince my friends to play with me because I also don't know what's going on is there a way to find one online?
I recommend looking into one-shots. There are several groups I know that only meet for that, and theres less worry about consistent schedules
Oh!
Check at #find-a-game
Play-by-post is a text-only game where you just check in once or twice a day and contribute however you're able. They're slower, but a minimal time commitment.
West Marches are community games with a large number of players and DMs all working together. Any subset of the group can schedule a session whenever they like. If you can't make it to a session, you're not holding anyone up.
These are great sounding options! I was worried to start playing because of that
It's a valid worry! But there's always a way
Adventurer's League is a set of rules that let you take your character from one game to another, so if you play a session or two, you can still carry what you've earned into the next game, wherever or whenever or whoever that's with.
is it silly of me to be so anxious about joining a game with strangers? I really want to play so bad but meeting new people on call makes me nervous, like I reallllyyy want to play but my anxiety is getting the best of me and is stopping me from doing anything about playing
D&D is a social game so no it's not unusual to be anxious/nervous meeting strangers to play with.
Can you tell me what Can i play
Play what? Other TTRPGs? #non-dnd-topics would be the place to ask.
How Can i understand the AC then
When someone tries to attack you, they make an attack roll.
Did you read the free Basic Rules?
If the total of that roll equals or exceeds your Armor Class, they hit.
If it's less, they miss.
there are systems made to be played without to-hit rolls
dnd isnt it
dnd is balanced around AC
Hey guys kinda a dumb question. I am playing wizard for the first time and I am messing around with the sheet on DNDbeyond and I noticed that I am able to add in an unlimited amount of leveled spells to my spell book. Is this intended or am I only meant to take a certain amount and get more from scrolls later? I understand that I can only prepare a certain amount obviously but I am still confused regardless. My character is level 3.
You can only learn a limited amount of spells at level 1 and then 2 per level after that. You can add spells to your spellbook though so have the option to add them to your sheet.
The class limits how many you learn by level. The function on dnd beyond that lets tou add more is to account for spells learneD from finding scrolls or given by your DM
It allows you to add an unlimited number of spells to your spellbook because that is how you add spell scrolls to the book during the game. In the character creation process, you must follow the process for learning spells by starting at level 1, and picking new spells to learn as you level up as explained in the class features
Got it thanks
This is what happens when a martial main tries to become a spell caster lmao
It can be confusing at the beginning yea 🙂 but super fun as you go!
TBF, this is exclusively a wizard thing. No other class has to both learn and prepare spells
its always either one or the other
I noticed that I’m just trying to get over the learning curve before the campaign starts in a few weeks
If you have any more questions feel free to ask

#dnd-discussion maybe a better place to ask. This channel is to help new players to the game.
Hey so I have a question but it isn’t necessarily about classes/races or anything like that, I’m just wondering if during a game you can ask about something if you’re confused? That may be a silly question, I’m new and I haven’t had any experience playing yet
I mean it’d be kinda weird if you weren’t able to ask wouldn’t it?
If the DM knows that you're new the game then they should be okay with you asking for clarification.
However, learn as much of the fundamental rules of the game so you won't be constantly pausing the game to ask "How does X work?"

ahh yes I understand, I have been researching + getting down the basics as much as I can, just wondering more about specific questions I may have, thank you for helping me out!!
can anyone show me how to play dnd
If you have specific questions you can ask here.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
i nned someone to show i learn better that way
There are no one-on-one tutorials because it's not viable since there are dozens of new people joining the server every day.
Again, read the rules or watch the tutorial videos at your own pace.
Learning is a collaborative process like playing. Reading the rules is sort of am essential start point and will continue to be as you progresss
The monthly Virtual D&D Weekends usually have a couple learn-to-play sessions.

Hey there! I'm still relatively new to DnD, but I've played a few games and would love to either play or try dm'ing for the first time! Any advice for either one is much appreciated as well
do sharp edge dice get dull at all or do they stay pretty nice
Head to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Will do! I'm still kinda finding my way through the server

Hey guys ❤️ I'm a new player looking for a group of people to get on call with and play ! ^^ Don't hesitate to DM me!

Depends on many physical factors
How do rolls work in say.. something like an athletics check to climb over a fence. Like there’s no stakes for failing, what stops you from rolling it over and over until you pass?
Just an example of something having no stakes do you can roll it multiple times if you fail
The DM calls for the appropriate roll if they deem it necessary.
Something simple as climbing over the fence wouldn't normally call for a roll. It may be considered difficult terrain though.
The DM decides what the Difficulty Challenge (DC) rating is, asks for a dice roll using a specific skill or attribute. Player rolls and tells the DM what they got (after adding bonuses and modifiers). If it meets or beats the DC, the player's character succeeds. If they don't meet the DC, the character fails to accomplish <thing>.
So basically
If it does have stakes or like a punishment for failing
That’s when you call for a roll?
Yeah
If it’s so trivially easy there’s no risk of failure, or so wildly difficult there’s no chance of success, there’s no point in rolling.
high, I am not new to D&D but I’m new to this server, I was hoping to ask if there is anyone accepting new player for there D&D campaigns? 🙂
Check #find-a-game
thank you 🙏🏽
if there are no stakes for failing and the player can repeatedly roll the check with no consequence, there is no need to roll for it
just say it happens
not everything needs a roll
are you looking for online or in-person, OldMan's suggestion is a good place to start for online games but just wanted to check
I’m looking for online since the local comic store is a little loud for me 😁
Very fair, I know the feeling
You could also look on roll20, and the various facebook pages/subreddits dedicated to getting online groups together
The more lines you cast the faster you'll likely find a game
Awesome Thank you 🙏🏽 I will look at those too, I will also look here because it looks like a lot of people are looking for players 😁
I’m honestly excited, I have not played D&D in a year 1/2 I think so I hope to find some fun peeps

would you be looking for online or in-person play?
You can check out hte #find-a-game channel on this discord
I would also suggest looking on the game postings on Roll20, along with the various facebook pages and subreddits dedicated to getting players together
@rocky escarp if my friend doesn't join this Saturday we could use another player
u ok?
Mentally no physically no spiritually no
Same bro
This channel is not for organizing and coordinating games. If you are looking to join a campaign, follow the instructions in #find-a-game to post and browse postings in the appropriate channels
See I tried to type in there but it deleted my text
You have to type in a thread
Ohhhh
read through the pinned posts in that channel and hopefully it'll make more sense
I'm new to the discord
It's okay
Soooo how do I join a game
Okay folks - do not solicit or try and organize games in the discussion channels. Read #find-a-game to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels
How do I do find a game
do you need the books to start playing the game?
No - you could start playing D&D with just the free basic rules (see pinned message), some dice, and some friends.
The books just add additional rules and character options folks can use.
But the core game mechanics and the base classes (excepting the artificer class) are all available in the free basic rules.
I just submitted the request (looking-for-dm). Is that the first step?
That creates a post that tells folks that you are looking for a DM (or D&D game) to play with. You could also look through #looking-for-players to see DMs/groups actively looking for players to join their game. Direct message them or post that you're interested in their thread. And we also have #looking-for-community - that's other D&D servers looking for people to join and play D&D with them. And then there's #paid-looking-for-game where you can pay a DM to run a game/campaign for you.
new here, is there a dnd maps channel?
thank you!
You can also check #channel-guide for the full list.
Just hoping for someone to possibly dm me rules and guidelines and how to plays for dnd? Fairly new I just find the concept interesting and searching for a way to dive into it without ruining a session with constant nagging and questions.

Welcome to the hobby
For in person games you can:
- Visit tabletop game shops
- Visit local conventions
- Visit your local libraries
- Visit your school
As these tend to host opportunities to play in person.
Online options in this server:
- You can follow the instructions in #find-a-game to learn how to make a post in #750812887697588356 .
- Reach out to people in #looking-for-players as those are posting by DMs looking for players.
- Extra tip: Elaborate what you bring to the table, details that help a DM determine their compatibility with a player can make a difference.
- Check out #looking-for-community as responses to postings will point you to communities that host dnd games.
- Learn about D&D's official community campaign called Adventures League in #adventurers-league
- Then check out #1050206572535623690as you can find al events you can participate in.
Other options
You can also search on the Looking for Group forums page of warhorn, roll20, dndbeyond, the website called startplaying, and dnd focused discord servers.

I been interested in D&D for a few years now . My issue is I don’t really have certain days off so it’s nearly impossible to play with the same people . Is it possible to play D&D with random players online ?
Yes. Check #find-a-game
Given your hectic schedule, your best bet is going to be D&D Adventurers League.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.
[Find out more](#al-rules-compendium message)
Are you interested in the Adventurers League?
We have several channels to discuss Adventurers League play:
• #al-admin-questions — Ask the AL Admins questions
• #adventurers-league — Chat about AL games, events, how to get started, AL characters, or other general AL chatter.
• #1050206875079155742 — Adventurers League rules discussion and questions. General D&D rules discussion belongs in #dnd-rules
• #al-dm-discussion — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for AL Dungeon Masters of all levels of experience to discuss their games, share tips, or share constructive feedback.
• #al-dungeoncraft — [SPOILER WARNING] A place for fledgling or experienced AL authors to discuss the Dungeoncraft program, ask questions, offer tips, or share constructive feedback.
With Adventurers League, you can create a character that follows certain guidelines and use it to play self contained adventures that can played in one sitting.
For you, the biggest appeal is going to be the schedule flexibility that AL provides, because you can play as often as your schedule allows and you just need to find an AL game that going to be hosted when you are free.
Thank u so much . This is a great start
Happy to help. You can find the AL player's guide here: https://dnd.wizards.com/adventurers-league
If you have questions, feel free to ask in #adventurers-league.
There are also quite a few hosted games listed in https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/1050208806006702081 that are scheduled throughout the month of March. So you'll be likely to find something that fits your hectic schedule.
Im building a character and a few things in the character builder don’t really explain how they are used in adventures . What are Proficiencies used for in your adventures ?
proficiency in weapons lets you add your proficiency bonus (PB) to attack rolls (not damage) with them, making you more accurate with them.
proficiency in skills lets you add your PB to an ability check that uses that skill (such as a Strength (Athletics) check), making you more suited for those tasks and checks of ability.
proficiency in saving throws lets you add your PB to those saves, meaning you're more likely to succeed.
proficiency in armor lets you wear that armor without a myriad of penalties.
Thank you
The long and short is, bigger number is better, adding more number is better. Except for armor which is just checking for "yes penalties" or "no penalties"
Of course, attacks and saves are very combat, but ability checks are the bread and butter of otherwise interacting with the world when the interaction has potential to go good or bad.
And to explain ability checks and ones that look like ability (skill) check
it's like a thumbs-and-fingers situation. All thumbs are fingers, reverse isn't true. A Strength (Athletics) check is always a strength check with a bonus if you're proficient in athletics, but it's still counted as a bog standard Strength check, just that this one uses a skill proficiency too.
So how would a History proficiency be used . Is it like Prior knowledge of things
That's usually for Intelligence (History) checks - basically a DM checking for something like...
if your character knows a thing about this ancient kingdom having had a custom for doing magic rune dances on weekends and that's the reason why this scene with runes and confetti is in this lost ruin.
Ok perfect. thanks for all of the help
And as exampled, if you have anything applying to intelligence checks in general, or ability checks in general, that could also apply to this.
Hello
So in general it could be highly useful to have someone with a History proficiency on your adventure if they know how to use it
I literally have no idea of what I’m doing
Can someone explain the basics to me please
Have you tried giving the basic rules a read?
do that, they are free
Just learned vicious mockery from the party bard can’t wait to test it
Hi guys I’m just wondering what all I would need (website wise) for a game when I do decide to try and find one once I create my character.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Dndbeyond, linked above has the free basic rules and a character maker if you're interested.
For playing, dndbeyond does have Maps now, but there are other VTTs (Virtual Table Tops) players use, so it depends on the one the DM/group you play with use.
So the dm will generally sort me out?
The group you join often will yes, or at least discuss together what sites they're using when playing online.
Always a good idea to have some grasp of the combat rules before joining a game, and you can make practice PCs by yourself, but much is dependent on what the DM decides (like what options are allowed, what platform to use, how Stats are generated) and you'll learn as you play best.
Been a longtime listener of podcasts and lets plays and decided tonight to try and take the first step in trying to find a game. Appreciate you.
Okay so I managed to get a group but now im most likely dming! Is there anything I have to take note of? I can't find too much help for dming as an absolute beginner at dnd
#dm-discussion can help, and if running a prewritten adventure (which can really help as a new DM) there are #1029833015423143957 to discuss that particular adventure with others who have played and ran it.
Okay thank you 🙂
Hello, I've never played DnD and would love to join in to somenes session to just listen in.
helloo
Most groups tend to not like random strangers popping in to just watch/listen on their game, but there are many D&D games that are streamed/recorded that you can find on YouTube/Twitch or even in Podcast format. I'd recommend checking those out - but recognizing that such are more for entertainment purposes and not for "this is how to play D&D" purposes.
Welcome!
If you're new to D&D, check the pinned messages here in the channel - they have useful links and resources to help get you started.
Thankyou 😁

Hello

To start with
So the question, how do you set the command to wild shape into an specific beast
Heyoooo
Hi
What’s up?
What do you mean?
If you’re asking about Avrae, I’d suggest trying in #ddb-avrae-help.
I will switch to the right channel, but yeah, can't figure how it works
Gotcha. Well, idk anything about AVRAE, so hopefully the people in the other channel will be able to help
Thanks tho! For taking an interest
congrats!
Hiya, im new to DnD. I played a tiny bit back in school but that was a long time ago. Could someone just help with the basics? ❤️
i have a cool idea for a Dnd with my Clock work Bard ;3
scroll up a bit
thanks
where can i show the art and if Ai art is ok /
We've got a few different art channels, but I'm afraid AI art is not permitted.
ok thought i asked ;p
i wanr be SILLY in a game but i cant find one in the find a game channel
Find one what? A silly game?
Generally people that promote their games in #looking-for-players skew towards more 'serious'
yea
yea.. kinda figured they would here
D&D is a big time investment and often requires a lot of effort to be put in to get things going. Silliness often derails things so that's why DMs might avoid that tone
Why is it you want a 'silly' game?
cause im er. newish to it
BUT i am good at finding the most bs thing to ever exist to a problem
Being new doesn't mean you can't take the game "seriously"
Although I'm not sure what you mean by that second commend
i mean like semi serious
Maybe you should clarify what you mean by 'serious/silly'?
i kinda mean like the games not serious really, like you wouldnt need to do intricate things to go forward or things dont have to make 100% sense.. kinda dont know how to describe it much more simplier
basically
Being random?
.sure yea like that obv theres a bit of a story but yea like what attacks i can do like that
Are you talking about taking the rules seriously or the world seriously?
Because those are two very different things
like i could spin a hammer at the melting point of iron
uhh both?
A group that takes the rules seriously probably won't let you do that with a hammer, unless you have a rule that gives you that ability.
Generally speaking, the rules specify what your character can do.
so yea not seriously
D&D is a game where the rules generally matter because it's what gives the game structure and keeps things fair
There are systems that are a bit more rules-loose though
^ By which he means games other than D&D.
the dm could possibly decide if what i do is fair
Indeed they could.
That's a lot of work to do on the fly, hence why DMs use the rules
like obv if i spin my hammer at the melting point of iron it wouldnt fly into the boss instantly killing it
My general advice while you're looking would be to have this conversation with each group up front. Be as clear as you can about what you are or aren't looking for in a game so you can find the right match.
so i should look for a game, be clear about my intentions and see if its a good match?
You've come to a D&D server; D&D is a set of rules as much as anything so it stands to reason the people you find promoting their games here are going to want to use those rules
oh
D&D isn't another word for roleplaying
That's not to say that a "serious" game doesn't have room for creative thinking, though.
In D&D you can ask try something but don't expect the DMs to say it will happen.
PC: "I want to spin my hammer at the melting point of iron."
DM: "You can try but it won't happen."
But usually that takes the form of finding clever uses for the abilities your character has, not inventing abilities on the fly.
like if theres a wall of fire and im a summoner could i summon spongebob to suck up the water from somewhere and fire it?
Does your character have an ability that lets them summon spongebob?
what if im just a summoner
Have you actually taken a look at the basic rules?
mmm…..
Usually anything that lets you summon another creature will specify which types of creatures you can summon and how those creatures work.
D&D fifth edition doesn't have "just a summoner"
There are rules to even what the spells do. Spells do only what their spell description say can (or cannot) do.
Im trying to download DnD online but it says the game is down
This server isn't for D&D Online
You might be able to get help on their forums.
https://forums.ddo.com/
Can my d&d character of the reborn lineage have different colored skin in some parts of their skin?
Generally speaking flavour is free. This means that how you describe your character is entirely up to you
Ohhh okay thank you
But always check with your DM to ensure your description fits the game world
Alright !
Do you need to buy something to play dnd online and if so what? (or is that just extra things?)
D&D is one of those hobbies where you can spend as much or as little as you like.
Hello everyone
You could play for years, online or off, without spending a dime.
This article covers some of the popular options for playing online:
?tag new online
Welcome!
thank you for letting me know ❤️
If somebody has high enough modifiers, wouldn’t they be able to pass any DC? What’s the point of having them roll then
You wouldn't
If there's no possible chance of failure or success in any form, the DM in theory shouldn't call for a roll
So for example, if a lock requires a DC 10 dexterity check made with thieves tools and the rogue has a total modifier of +10 for thieves tools, the DM might just say "you succeed" without calling for a roll
¯_(ツ)_/¯
5E D&D has "bounded accuracy" where the profiency bonus only increases about every four or five character levels. Also, 5E avoids modifier stacks prevalent in older editions but instead relies more on advantage/disadvantage.
That's why adventures set for high level characters tend to have more difficult challenges. A level 15 Rogue might have no problem breaking into a person's house via a DC10 lock, but high level adventures tend to have high level stakes. The lock to the Archdevil's mansion might have a DC of 25, for example, so the same Rogue still has a chance of failure.
Ability Checks DC
Task Difficulty DC
Very easy 5
Easy 10
Medium 15
Hard 20
Very hard 25
Nearly impossible 30
Alright, thank you. I’m really new so I don’t know a lot about running higher level campaigns
Starting off, it's extremely unlikely a Rogue would have over a +7 to picking locks at level 1.
If you're new to D&D don't worry about high level stuff for now.
Yeah, just a little epiphany I had lol
You can pick expertise with thieves tools, and then have. 16 dex
But most people would rather the second skill proficiency
Where do I submit my looking for dm
Any channel where you have permission to type.
Hi
Hey I have a question
I am trying cleric for the first time and I don’t know which spells I can have and which are off limits. I typed cleric generic spells but it gave me all of them
a cleric is a prepared spell caster
so it can prepare any spells it has access to according to their cleric level
So if I’m in the trickery domain and I want to cast a light domain spell, I can?
domain spells are automatically added to your spells prepared and some are already cleric spells while others arent cleric spells
so if that spell from the trickery domain was on the cleric spell list sure but if it isnt then you do not have access to it
Okay, is there a cleric spell list that I can trust only has the spells available to me?
I get mixed ones online
I am level 7 by the way
As a cleric you have access to all cleric spells (for the appropriate spell level)
just the base cleric spell list
just use the base cleric spell list and then refer to your subclass for your free domain spells
Okay where’s this mysterious list
Domain spells may include spells that are normally from other classes.
yes potentially
Okay. As long as the special domain spells aren’t in that list we’re good
I have those down I just needed to know which I could have that are general spells and which are off limits to my domain
your Domain grants you spells, it doesn't prevent you from taking spells
Read the domain description. You get those spells available to you on top of rhe base cleric list. The domain spell feature description explains it
Hi everyone. I wanna start the adventures of my level one Vulpin Bloodhunter. Does anyone have any space available? My work schedule changes so I have to do text.

Hi, im starting to get into dnd, and have a question. If you have a player in your campaign who is playing as a druid, and wild shapes, can you ride the druids wild shape?
That's more of a #dnd-rules question.
there are specific rules for using mounts, which involve the size of the rider and mount, and also the anatomy of the mount

Can I play on a discord server? Or do i need friends
Dnd merely requires a way to effectively communicate with the other people. Discord is one path.
D&D is designed to be played with people—doesn't matter if they're friends or strangers.
the idea is that you make friends
There aren't any spells "off limits" necessarily.
1: you have access to prepare from the entire cleric spell list, as any other cleric has.
2: You have the Trickery domain spell list, adding some extra spells to your prepared list, counting them each as a cleric spell, for free, on top of the ones you get to choose.
Hey, I'm a newcomer, I have basic ideas for a character but I don't really know how to get started, could someone please help me out?
Yeah, would love to help
First tho, have you given the first few chapters of the PHB a go at reading to get a general idea?
I have read the first few chapters so I have a general idea, yes
But like- im not sure if im doing it right, y'know?
For sure, what part are you haviing troubles with?
Rolling for stats, and making a backstory. I know certain races and certain classes give certain boosts for certain traits but I cant really find a clear answer onto what amplifies what
and as for backstory, I don't know enough lore so I don't know if what i have in mind would work
Some of that is going to depend on whatever game you're playing
Since a DM might have specific lore for their world/campaign
Okay, understandable
The class or race’s description says what it does
Really? I mustve missed it
Yeah that can definitely make writing a backstory that really fits into a particular setting difficult. For your first backstory, using placeholder names and broad ideas can work well. That way when you find a campaign to join you can change the name of that village, or that major NPC with ones your DM knows exists to get that "fits into the world" feeling
I'd also recommend using Point Buy or the Standard Array rather than rolling if building characters for practice. Most DMs wouldn't let you come into a game with pre-rolled stats
Yeah, the description for each race should include an Ability Score Increase subheading, that shows which stats get a +1 and/or +2
Any race can be any class. The current rule set allows the racial bonus to ability scores to be assigned to any ability
What ability is important for a class/subclass will be found in the description for the class/subclass
Okay, I'll reread it, but also for the pre-rolled stats, what is 'Point Buy' and what is 'Standard Array' im sorry if these are obvious questions, but my brain is slow from homework
ad for the backstory, it is a collaboration between you and the DM who dictates the world setting
Bear in mind the main goals of a backstory: to provide a reason to adventure
Point Buy is a method of picking stats where each number has a specific value and you can add up to a total of 27
And the Standard Array is one possible outcome of that method
The rules go over the details ^
It does not need to be long, it doesnt even need to be a narrative. Personally, some bullet points in an outline is preferable
Focus on:
Why is your character joining a party to adventure
What do you want? What is important
What are you afraid of?
How do you interact with other people?
What are your flaws
Thank you all so much 🙂 I honestly wasn't expecting anyone to see my messages until like 3AM so i really appreciate you for helping me
I'm a big fan of short backstories that mostly give me an understanding of what matters to my character and why they're adventuring
Some people spend alot of time writing a novel, but at the core this is unnecessary
I played an entire in depth Rime campaign off the minimal backstory motivation of "he really likes to fish"
Interesting, can I tell you the concept I have for my character? Should we go to the character discussion channel so we're not talking about it in the wrong place?
Yes. discussion about a specific character should go to #character-discussion
I put it in that channel 🙂
I’m just getting into dnd and need help creating a character sheet
Can anybody help
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
No where can I find that

Hello
thank you for the help brother!
#find-a-game can point you toward the available groups here.
Is there anywhere else to look?
Oh, tons 😅
Which ones are most accesable and understandable?
Another user here, iamrazorwing, put together a whole bunch of options: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fqCm4tA5Y_WxlqgryUM_iaz3l7B3zZ0m/view
I can't find many good ones here
A few general tips, though:
- Be patient. Finding a game can take time; finding the right game can take longer still.
- Be proactive. Start replying to others instead of waiting for them to reply to you.
- Be diligent. New games are posted all the time! The more often you look and the more places you look, the more likely you'll find what you're after.
- Be open. Communicate your expectations up front. The more clearly you let people know what you do (and don't) want from your game, the easier it will be to find the right match.
Oh, ok, thank you
Do most people use the fae races cause i wanna make a haragon but don't wanna get rejected from games because I'm using a non vanilla race
DM dependent
Yea sounds about right
Also is that the right term vanilla races?
Starter races idk lol
That is not a real term
it may be used informally in some circles but it is neither official nor common
hey all, im completely new to dnd and my friends whos pretty wellversed wanted to start a new campaign witch a bunch a newbies to see who wants to get into the game! im really excited to start but I have very vague idea where to start and am struggling to find resources thatll help me fill out my character sheet for my character. could someone point me in some directions? thanks :)

Have you started your character sheet already? What kind of character did you have in mind?
Hello 👋 I'm new to dnd I'm currently filling out my character sheet for a dnd club I'm in and I could use a bit of help
See above, bot post has many starting materials
Yeah! i do have a sheet
its basically blank
and the character I had in mind was a monk
my friend said i should have some sort of gimmick with the character to spice my guy up
so i made him blind 😭
thank you! ill check them out
You may want to discuss this with your DM as that will have a mechanical impact
oh yeah i did! he said it would be cool and hed work with that
Ok
i would probably avoid any mechanics related gimmicks tbh. this game is already confusing enough for new people as is
Ok but they be pretty silly sometimes
oh for sure, fun as hell
but for a new player, thats gonna cause all kinds of issues ontop of just .... not knowing the bazillion regular rules,
im learning that any minor tweek to something seemingly not that big a deal can actually be a pretty big deal lol. like, if you are blind. you might actually need to be rolling at a disadvantage .... for practically everything?
Oh good God that reminds me I did a angel that got stronger when putting on a blindfold
Extreamly funny when I hit
WHEN
onto of just not being able to do a ton of stuff at all. i assume any kind of searching is just off the table
Hello how are you all doing, I'm new to dnd, and I'm not sure how it goes other than it's a role-playing game and there is a d20 dice :3

Thank u
guys i just started should i make a character sheet with the website or pencil and paper
My experience is that it depends on the party/dm you’re with
i dont have anyone to play with yet
Then just make one online for now
Online
like i just started like this little quest to play dnd like 15 mins ago and i have NO money and NO clue what to do 💔
You need to have patience
DND is not a "hop in and play" game. It takes time and preparation.
wisdom…
D&D Beyond Character Maker keeps tracks any modifiers and is very intuitive. Even has digitial dice rolling if you don’t want to/can’t get dice
Yeah. Their website is mobile friendly.
I’d say make a character or two so you can get an understanding of all the aspects that make a character. But always reach out to your DM to get the vibe of a campaign. You don’t want to be a wannabe Sherlock Holmes in the middle of World War I if you catch my drift
What about an uncle Iroh in world war 1
thanks for the advice goat
There is a time and place for every character. At the end of the day, D&D is about being the character YOU make. It’s okay to take advice now and then but don’t let some hateful dice goblin on the other side of the table tell you every breath you should take @lyric fjord
Uncle Iroh takes the eastern front by himself. That’s different
So does that mean he can take the entire German front
That’s good
If you can take 1920s Russia, you can take 1920s Germany no question
Ok
If I make an Iroh character can I gust carry a tea kit with me and just have tea at any random time
Ask your dm if this roleplaying flavor is ok
Ok we haven’t started the campaign yet but I will ask if it’s fine
Hello!
Ok hello everyone I’ve never played or made a dnd character it’s my first time
How’s everyone’s day going
My days good what about yours
It’s been fine thanks for asking
What’s dnd beyond
Cause I got it and made a character but idk what to do now
Wait my bad I shouldn’t be asking here haha 😅
I also gut got it yesterday but you would need to find a group to play with
Oh that’s not gonna happen people don’t like playing with me sadly and I have no idea how I’m gonna find people
Why don’t people like playing with you
D&D Beyond is an online tool (website and app) for character sheets and digital books.
@compact stirrup If you approach D&D with the attitude of "People don't like me and I'll never find a group", you never will find a group, but not because of anything to do with how people feel about you
If you go into finding a game already defeated, you'll not get anywhere
Yeah man that’s true thanks
I’m being a bit of a downer haha
Yeah he got a point
That’s good
I don’t know why I thought I could play through dnd beyond 😅
Why don't people like playing with you.
You can play D&D online using D&D Beyond
it has a combat tracker, dice log where you can share rolls, maps
hello ı have some thıng to ask
which is?
The spell description explains how it works, including it's limitations
thanks
I’ve never played dnd but it seems interesting curious how to get into it or even start to learn

hi, im confuesed on how character hp works, my player is playing a dragonborn druid at 2nd level, how would he work out the hp for that? cos rn its at 9hp
Hello
At level 1, ignoring any other features that might give you a bonus, a druid's HP will be 8 + Con. This is because their hit die is a d8
Each time you level up, your HP will increase by d8 + Con to a minimum of 1.
So a Level 2 character will be 8 + 2x Con + 1d8
So if the character has a -1 or 0 in Con, it's entirely possible (though unfortunate) to get 9 hp.
Ahoy

Excuse me, i have a question.
I finished making my character sheets, what do i do now ?
I would recommend you to read the Basic Rules. If you have already try finding a game under #find-a-game .
How do I make a character sheet?
But i still don’t understand what is d(numbers) suppose to mean

A d20 for example is a 20-sided dice
The Number infront of the d means how many dice you roll so 2d8 means you roll 2 8-sided dice
thank you, im creating the character sheets from my phone and i have limited imagination with the background such as family relation etc, can i leave it as blanks or i should fill it ?
I think you can leave the specific ones open, as long as you have a general idea of your characters backstory and personality
Until you have a DM, you don't need to fill out your backstory since you don't know the setting the character would be in.
ahhh oki doki thank you, this is really helpful
btw just finished the handbook, should i find a game now or is there something i need to learn before searching for a session ?
i think you should be ready to find a game
often i think the best way to learn is to play :) you'll learn as you go along!
thank you 😁
Dice
Players roll dice to resolve whether their attacks hit or miss or whether their adventurers can scale a cliff, roll away from the strike of a magical lightning bolt, or pull off some other dangerous task. Anything is possible, but the dice make some outcomes more probable than others.
The different dice are referred to by the letter d followed by the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. For instance, a d6 is a six-sided die (the typical cube that many games use).
When you need to roll dice, the rules tell you how many dice to roll of a certain type, as well as what modifiers to add. For example, 3d8 + 5 means you roll three eight-sided dice, add them together, and add 5 to the total. (An expression like 18 (3d8 + 5) simply means that 18 is the average of rolling 3d8 + 5.)

Hi
Welcome
Yeah you're definitely not alone in that regard. It's just easier to help new players if you help yourself a little first by trying to get your head around the basic rules. They're linked in the bot post above and do a pretty decent job of getting the general idea of the game across
If you have any specific questions about anything you read feel free to ask whenever, lots of ppl here love to help

If you have specific questions, do ask, but you should try to work through those materials first!
so what makes dnd fun?
Hanging out with friends, helping to create a story, being creative with characters and choices, forgetting about the real world for a while in a fantasyland. Stuff like that.
The freedom of choice that you have as your character, to do whatever you want (within the limits of your characters ability). In the same way, it is fun because the limits of what is possible within the world, is only limited by the DM's and players imaginations
Kind of? But you're all in the story too.
yes, very much so
oh ok
The DM is the narrator of the story, and controls all the side-characters and baddies. The players are writers too, but only control one (more fleshed out) character each
so is the time setting the same? like i can't just pull out a submachine gun?
Very much so. It's collaborative storytelling, but the rules enforce some structure so it doesn't just turn into Calvinball where you can just decide you have ULTIMATE COSMIC POWER and smash the bad guys like bugs. Each player controls what their character says and does, and the Dungeon Master essentially controls everybody else. And instead of just saying "I do X", it's more like "I try to do X" and then the dice determine whether X actually happens or not.
D&D is usually medieval/Renaissance-era fantasy. But some folks set it in other time periods.
akimbo AA12's
The game was designed for use with a traditional fantasy setting. Straying too far from that will often require a lot of custom rule design.
Probably not. Other tabletop games will handle that better.
After all, it's "Dungeons & Dragons", not "Monsters & Machine Guns" 🙂
I am currently playing in a magic-cyberpunk setting with a lot of firearms, cybernetics and armored vehicles. It is possible, but by the gods have we spent an unearthly amount of time making it work
what about muskets and cannons?
The Dungeon Master's Guide does have rules for both of those things, depends really one what your DM believes should exist in their setting
There’s optional rules for them, but I don’t think they’re commonly used.

Ok.
do spells like inflict wound go through armor class
No, since the spell requires the caster to make a melee spell attack.
Meaning you roll to determine if you successfully hit your target.
The number to meet or beat would be the target's Armor Class.
To bypass a target's AC, you need to cast spells like Sacred Flame, which requires the target to make a saving throw against your Spell Save DC.
A spell that calls for an attack roll follows the base rules for resolving any attack. Roll to hit, compare to the AC of the target. If you meet it you beat it.
