Standard Array is really just 1 specific distribution of thats that is possible under point buy. If you want to use it to make things simpler for yourself, you can. Otherwise, you can just use point buy
Ok, thank you
I did 16 Char, 10 wis, 10 int, 14 dex, 15 con, and 8 strength
Hoping that this is gonna be good
Generally your DM will tell you which method to use.
Seems like a good distribution for a warlock, though. 👍
wassup guys, i know this might belong in the lfg channel but can someone gimme 1 hourish sone shot session rn, im new and wanna see what the game is about, i made a character already. i am okay with vc and theater of the mind, avrae
You're right. That does belong in the LFG channel.
#find-a-game can get you started.
There's instructions in #find-a-game.
Idk if this is really the right channel to put this in but we have a campaign and are looking for a new DM (first one hasn’t been active at all since she said she’d do it which was like 3 weeks ago and we’ve been trying to discuss game times and stuff) but anyways I’m we’re a bit confused on the channels #750812887697588356 and #looking-for-players because is the looking for dm where the dm’s post and people look through to find one? Or is it the channel where you make a post to say you are looking for a dm
I’m very confused and I’m still kinda new to the server and I’m just trying to get my first campaign started 😭
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
All the info you need is there
I have but I’m still confused for some reason 😭
Not sure anyone can help if you don't know why you're confused
I’ve reread it like 5 seperate times but all the info is like- spaced out?
I do know why I’m confused it says so in the message
#750812887697588356 is where players post that they're looking for a DM.
#looking-for-players is where DMs post that they're looking for players.
Ohhh ok Tysm!
To use the bot commands start typing /looking-for then select dm - the bot will give you a form to fill out to submit a post to the #750812887697588356 channel and attach a thread to it. Use the thread to provide clarifications or updates.
So if you want to join as a player, you can post in #750812887697588356 or reply to posts in #looking-for-players.
(Arguably the latter is the better choice.)
Ok! Ty!
what's an ability save?
There's nothing quite like that - there's saving throws and there's ability checks.
If you meant saving throws, you roll a d20 and add your saving throw modifier (if any) and any other bonuses
but what about the thing that says "ability save dc"?
(under the proficiency bonus)
Under what proficiency bonus where? 😅
character sheet
Which character sheet?
lemme dm u it
It's probably for stuff like a monk's Ki save DC, or a battle master's Maneuver save DC.
If you're a spellcaster, you could potentially write your spell save DC there for easy reference, too.
But it's very possible you might not have anything to put there at all.
what the hell is battle master
As a player, whenever your DM asks you what your passive score is
They may also use it without asking.
(passive wisdom, perception
(passive wisdom, insight
(passive intelligence, investigation
But it's ultimately a tool for the DM to use at their discretion.
I'm a dm-
It's not something a player ever chooses to use.
but what're the passive stats used for?
Typically they're used to represent the average roll of a repeated check, like searching each room in a dungeon for traps.
hmm
Then whenever you want the players to make an ability check either without them knowing, or if it's something done over a large span of time to represent the average of a lot of smaller checks
It's detailed in the Basic Rules: Passive Checks
They can also be used to represent an average roll for a check you want to make without the players knowing, like to notice if a guard is lying to them.
If you ask for a roll, they might think "Wait, why did I roll? Is there something I'm supposed to notice?"
But if they suggest on their own that the guard may be lying, then it's safe to ask them to roll.
Or they may explicitly ask if they can roll.
Or you might just let the lie go past undetected if the players don't act, and not even look at their passives.
It's all up to you as the DM.
lol
so if I get it correctly, if the players are using alot of rolls for common actions I just do the average
I'd just talk to my players.
"Hey, I see you're making trap checks every time you walk in a room. Here's something we could do to speed up gameplay. What do you think?"
got it
Then you don't need to waste time for them checking in every room.
You don't need to risk asking for a roll and cluing them in that a trap might be hidden there.
You can just check their passive when they enter a room with a trap.
I want to get into D&D, but I don't know where to start. After playing BG3, I understand the basics, and I am aware that some things changed in the game from the tabletop. I'm wondering if it is a money dump to just get into it. What do you guys recommend?

when a player character rolls with advantage how much does that add to their roll?
or does it just lower their dc?
Advantage means you roll twice and take the higher
Advantage is just taking the higher of the two d20
It doesnt add anything or affect the dc
hello
Can i use a white primer on minis or does it need to be a dark colour?
Same
We could cooperate
This channel is for asking questions about being new to D&D, not mini painting tips
The Basic Rules, linked by the bot, are free and can give you plenty of play without spending a cent. Reading those would be one way of getting started, or trying the demo, or browsing D&D Beyond.
i dont have enough experience in dnd to know all the rules except for the very basic I soon want to dm for my friends for the first time using the lost mines of Phandalin online free dnd beyond campaign but since we are planning on doing it online im curious as to what vtt to use and if any have that specific campaign already built in
That’s more of a #third-party question, as I believe you’d need to buy the adventure and only certain platforms have official support for D&D content. I’m partial to the no-frills approach of Owlbear Rodeo, but it is not automated by any means.
Did you claim Lost Mines back when it was free? Because it no longer is
i did
👍
kinda jumped onto the opportunity to get free campaign but have been putting it off with the excuse of being inexperienced
Everyone starts somehow, so good on you for not letting that be an obstacle!
yes just looking for the best way of running it either without or with online vtt
Again, #third-party is the best place to get opinions on VTT platforms.
Yeah sorry I couldnt see any particular channel to ask this in
#dnd-minis perhaps?
yeah didnt have it but added it now thanks
Yup, I got it. I'm creating my character rn
sure
Hi there friends, what manual can I find the information for leveling up characters. Such as, when my paladin hits level 4, what abilities, bonuses, spells etc. does he get?
Check the free basic rules pinned in this channel (or here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules)
Find the section with your Class and look at what you get at 4th level.
woah thanks!
if i had extra attack as a bard and used vicious mockery, could i cast it twice?
no
Extra Attack only applies when you take the Attack action.
vicious mockery is a spell not an attack
Vicious Mockery is done using the Cast a Spell action.
ty
(Vicious Mockery isn't technically an attack either, since it doesn't involve an attack roll.)
It does emotional damage
hello

Hi! I was wondering were to go in the group to find a campaign to join
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

im really new to dnd and my friends who agreed to learn to play with me scheduled for a sleepover next week but thats so far away and i wanna play already, thing is i dont know how or who id play with online, i joined a few discord servers but theres already ongoing conversations so i dont know how to butt in :, ) someone knowledgeable pls help i physically cannot wait a whole week
Ok so you may not find a game in a week, I suggest you look at the basic rules and learn the stuff on character creation and what you can do
We have #looking-for-players to find games but like I said it can take a while to find a game and even then there is some set up to do
awh okay i see! also ive been like hyperfixating on this for like a week or two so ive done all the research and like i think ive learned most stuff so idrk where to go from here other than look for people to play with
also thank you for the help!!!! i didnt notice the looking for players chat before
You may also be interested in #looking-for-community. Those are for communities with a larger group of players/DMs, and when someone wants to run an adventure, folks sign up. It's a possibly better bet for finding a game sooner, though it does still require some advance notice as Enoki points out.
Ooooo okay okay got it got it
the week of waiting feels so long its like waiting for your birthday and then days seem suuuper slow
im new whatsup

Hey, hello everyone)
A quick question - are there any spells similar to a command spell? Something that can order a creature to do something with more than one word for example

Yeah that was kinda weird.
Read the bot post above.
well anyways ill check out the handbook later but thank you for all that. But what is a easy species for a beginner?
Howdy. Feel free to scroll up to the bot post there, some useful links to get started with.

This is where new players can start
None of them are very complicated, but human is certainly the simplest.
Where can I post my results?
Also I love DND even more now!
It doesn't let me send images
Send a link
Can you delay with taking a feat? Take it, let's say, at level 5th instead of 4? (I think of taking Eldritch Adept one, and want a "One with shadows" invocation which requires level 5)
Nope
But you can replace your chosen invocation whenever you level up, so there’s no point in waiting anyway.
Thought so, sadge 😦
Oh, that's nice! Thanks
(Note you do have to be warlock level 5; multiclassing doesn’t count.)
Hi
Welcome!
I’m new to this stuff
Yeah it’s just like I’ve seen this game a few times and I wondered how I can play this game I don’t have anyone to play with so idk I just want to play with some people
There’s some handy links here to get you started, then:

The last one can point you toward the available groups.
Is it? It just sais "5th level", and not "5th level warlock" as for "Undying Servetude" for instance
"If an eldritch invocation has prerequisites, you must meet them to learn it. You can learn the invocation at the same time that you meet its prerequisites. A level prerequisite refers to your level in this class."
Oooh, I see now
Hello
Im new to Traditional DnD and have never personally played, but ive watched and listened to a lot of
DnD podcasts and ive played baldurs gate 3 and id like to find a new player friendly game
Welcome! #find-a-game can point you toward the available groups. A lot of games are generally welcoming to newcomers, even if they’re not explicitly advertised as such. So if you see one you like, can’t hurt to ask!
Thanks, aight imma head there
What is “session 0?” Does the adventure start there or is it just some prerequisite stuff before you start the game
Session 0 is where the dm explains the backstory for the campaign, establishes ground rules regarding lines and veils, and any house rules, and when players potentially finish making their characters
Think of it like a tool and resource that be used to prevent alot of potential issues that might come up in a campaign.
It's like when starting a co-op game in something, like organizing the settings of the game and the goals of what you want to go for
in DND that's what tone it is, so we don't get Maridith, seeking to save her vampiric father from the clutches of a vile curse eroding their long shadowed traditions... and then Robert Bobert the Lizard Wizard. In the same party.
And stuff like what not to do, such as referencing contentious topics. Organizing house rules, so it's known beforehand and can perhaps be planned around
Clarifying rules, setting boundaries, introducing each other, learning the setting, character creation, meeting the other players
One thing I do in session zeros if have everyone say what they want out of the dnd campaign.
By having everyone be aware, it can create table goals that everyone can work towards.
Sets expectations of the game
Yep.
It can serve as a good indicator to determine if campaign is compatible with everyone at the table.
For example, if someone’s hard line is no romance or “fun times” then that is a line that shouldn’t be crossed during the campaign that is established during session 0
Hi everyone, I am new to DnD and this server. I'm in a college game design class, and they want us to play DnD. I have no experience with it, and my group is having a hard time trying to play virtually. Are there any virtual tabletops that extremely easy for people who have never played DnD to use?
There are a few.
- Owlbear Rodeo
- Roll20
- Foundry
- Fantasy grounds
- Alchemy RPG
I'm sure there is more.
As for the easiest, I'd say to use roll20 with dnd beyond.
Mainly because you can use an extension called beyond 20 which you can use to send your rolls from dnd beyond into roll20.
okay thank you so much!
A portion of the D&D community is also part of the LGBTQIA+
Games will often highlight this to make it clear that it is a safe environments for members of that community.
Hello I'm a new dm and in doing curse of strahd were should I sticky note and any tips
Hey guys, what age is D&D for?
I heard it's for all ages
It can be
Are you doing it irl?
Or discord text based
Or roll20 idk
#1029833015423143957 has a CoS channel which may have some tips
Sorry for the late response but I had a doctors appointment, it’s the official D&D server so we try to be supportive of everyone
What's going on everybody i'm trying to get into D&D. I've played Divinity original sins 2 and I'm currently replying BDG3. I'm trying to get into virtual tabletop but I honestly don't know what I am doing. I have roll 20 download and Beyond. What's my next move? Also how do I play with others?
Alright so I recommend reading the rules (very similar to BG3 so you should be good), then going to #looking-for-players and #750812887697588356 to find a game. Once you do you should be able to create a character and play, I’m not sure exactly how virtual TTRPGs work since I play at a local gamestore but I hope someone with better insight can help
You are awesome thank you so much
No worries I hope you have a great time!
Some DMs ask for payment (they are usually professionals) some don’t so I just recommend seeing if they are paid or not if you don’t want to spend money
Does anyone have a dnd campaign i can join I don't know where to find one
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
On this server, at least, everything in #looking-for-players should be free. We have a separate channel, #paid-looking-for-game, for professional DMs.
Oh yup I forgot #paid-looking-for-game was a different server lol
no, that's a channel in this server

Any tips for a newbie sorcerer
- Focus on high charisma.
- Remember to have variety in your spells, don't just focus on spells that deal damage.
- Be aware of how many spell slots you have at a given time.
Thx cuh
Positioning is survival
Stay away from the action use your spells range
Mage armor is your friend
Shield spell is your best friend

Where do I put the race ability score increases on the character sheet
You increase the relevant ability score. You can mark down your base stats somewhere if you want and then note down all your improvements for the bookkeeping if you want.

wild magic can go into any wild magic table really
depends on your gm
can go from a d10 to d100
What’s a D100?
a die with 100 faces 🙂
intimidatinfg asf i know lol, a d100 roll without a d100 consists of 2d10a
rolling 5d20s wouldnt actually equate to 1d100
There are people called dice goblins for a reason
a. bc the results would be 5-100 not 1-100
and b. bc rolling multiple dice like that creates a curve of probability, rather than each result being equally probable
I didn’t know that was the term and it’s amazing
no. if you mean wild magic sorc, there is a single table for it
depending on gm it can change
Theoretically can I have 200 wild Magic effects?
And if so, what would I role for it?
if your gm agrees to that table
i mean.... that would be homebrew
RAW there is a single table
and we avoid discussing homebrew here to avoid confusing newcomers
the normal table has 50 effects, using a d100
My Dm LOVES wacky things so i’m looking for things to add to my wild magic table
The base ones are fun and goofy, but I feel like they can be more
Oooh
oh im so sorry i may be a little drunk i just love promoting personal play rules, my fault ill refrain
wacky things are so fun its what makes dnd dnd
Yeah. It’s part of why I made wild magic my first character.
wild magic can go so crazy its such fun
I was gonna do hex warlock first but wild magic sounds amazing
wild magic is genuinely one of the coolest subs in the game
Speaking of, which can I add to the list of 50 or is it set and stuck at 50? And I just have to replace things if I wanna make my own.?
theres tons of wild magic tables out ther
it reallt is just whatever your gm allows
Where would one go and find something like that?
I’m sure the DM would allow it. He’s allowing all kinds of crazy things at least that’s what others say
reddit has tons
Epic. Thanks for the information and help.
no problem 😄
I’ll name my first childs middle name after you
ryan is a beautiful middle name
Hello. I'm kind of new to this server and dnd as well, so hello 😂
hi
Hello does anyone know how to join a D&D game can yall tell me the steps
Anybody can tell me xp system please it’s so urgent
You get xp for defeating enemies and that xp is divided up between the party members. You add the xp to your xp total and you level up when you have enough for the next character level (see the character advancement table).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
So thank you

See above
hello individuals
That's not how the game works
Eldrtich Blast is a spell attack, meaning it's accuracy would be the same as any other spell attack you make
That accuracy would be based on your spellcasting ability modifier and the targets AC
Any attack depends on a d20 (twenty sided dice) + the attribute associated with the attack (Charisma for warlocks casting Eldritch blast, strength for most melee attacks, dexterity for most ranged attacks) + your characters proficiency bonus (if proficient, which you will be for EB)
So your accuracy (To hit bonus) goes up as you level and your attributes and proficiency bonus goes up, but it's always compared to the enemies AC (Armor class) which can also change.
Might be worth having a look over the combat rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat esecpially the 'making an attack' section.
what's a spellcast ability modifier?
its the stat u use for ur spellcasting it changes depending on your class
for example wizard uses intelligence and warlock uses charisma
and it effects how hard your spells are to resist and how much to hit bonus you get
Every character has 6 ability scores, dexterity constitution strength charisma wisdom and intelligence. These scores affect most of what your character is able to do in the game including the effectiveness of your spellcasting. Warlocks use charisma as their spellcasting ability score
Good morning :D! I recently joined the server and, to be honest, i don't know how D&D works, recently i've been reading the basic rules book from D&D Beyond to guide myself but there's a lot of things that i still don't quite get (;ŏ﹏ŏ)
Welcome! What’s one thing you still have questions about, to start?
Hi! I just joined the server. I have a question regarding the Zhentarim. What can be the rank of a Zhentarim base commander?
ok
I have some doubts about the proficiency itself, i don't quite wrap my head around how it works 8'))
Your proficiency bonus is based entirely on your character level.
At level 1, it’s a +2, then it increases up to a total of +6 by level 20.
It’s basically just makes you more likely to succeed at the things you’re good at.
Good at Nature? Adding that bonus to your Nature checks makes you more likely to succeed on those checks.
Good at weapons? Adding it there makes you more likely to hit your target.
There’s a number of other things you add it to, listed here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#ProficiencyBonus
How long do DND rounds last
And this table shows when your proficiency bonus increases:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
A round is six seconds in-game.
How long it takes IRL depends on how many combatants there are and how long it takes each person to complete their turn.
How long is the game itself ヽ(。◕o◕。)ノ.
As long or as short as your story needs it to be. 😅
People typically play for 2-4 hours at a time.
Sometimes that’s the complete story — what we’d call a one-shot.
Sometimes that’s just a small piece of an adventure that lasts for years.
the idea is that you come together for a few hours every so often and slowly but surely progress through the campaign and whatever
So, after a small part, the same DM will host another session another time?
Typically, yes.
Plus when it comes to combat, there are certain things that can affect the pacing and length of the game.
Such as:
- How many players do you have.
- How many creatures are fighting in combat.
- At what pace the players progress through the story.
Oohhh i get it :0 i think that there's a line in the guide that says that proficiency sometimes add and sometimes not, and i didn't quite understood how that works, but now that you explain it like that sounds easier to understand c:
Your race, class, and background will generally say what proficiencies you have.
Or give you a choice of proficiencies.
If you’re proficient with simple weapons, for example, you’d add your proficiency bonus when you attack with one.
And how do you Calculate the proficiency on levels? I mean, you said it starts at +2 on level 1, on which levels does the proficiency improves until it reaches +6 on level 20?
If you’re not proficient in martial weapons, you can still use one of them, but you wouldn’t add your proficiency bonus.
it is shown in the class table when your proficiency bonus improves
This table show the bonus at each level.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
I'm excited to try entering a game but I have to focus on school for the time being
Dies
Play at school! Start a D&D club!
Ohhh :DDD gotta check that Section then
Lol I don't know any people who knows and plays dnd
Nothing wrong with asking or putting out a call.
You’d be surprised. if you build it they will come
You'd be surprised how popular dnd has gotten.
We'll see haha
Remember, like any hobby, it's important to balance life responsibilities with things you enjoy.
Indeed
Exactly c: and i'm sure that it will be a moment where you can start a game with fun people
Im trying to figure out where I can learn more about the Monk class. Im reading through the Basic Rules, and all it tells me is about "The Way of The Open Hand" Monk. Where can I see the features of the Shadows and Elements monk?
nevermind, players handbook is different than basic rules. found it! lol
If you do something cool or roleplay really well your DM may reward you with an Inspiration point which you can use at any point as a free Reroll of a d20 roll
hello im new to this server and also to D&D but i need help
Welcome. What sort of help are you looking for?
me and my friend made characters but we need to full set them up like we already used D&D beyond to make a character but we need to make it orginized if that makes sense?
In what way do you feel it's disorganized?
well could i dm you what my friend did since they told me i might have to do this method
You’re welcome to share it here. That way everyone can help.
Hi! Im new!
Welcome to the server!
Im queer as well (trans fem and lesbian to be specific) but i could only oick one and i wanted to pick wizard lol!

Post the D&D Beyond link of your characters
i can send it in the D&D beyond feed back or support is that alright?
Are you providing feedback about D&D Beyond itself, or requesting help with a D&D Beyond feature?
If you’re just trying to share your character sheet, share the link. That’s easier and far more useful than a screenshot anyway.
well my friend took a picture of their sheet and im trying to send it to make sure it is correct and if so then i can make mine
You could also share a link to your screenshot here, if needed.
Is this PC approved by your DM?
well we are making characters we don't have anyone to start a campaign yet we thought we should have a character on deck
Okay, I asked that because 1) you've multiclassed and 2) you didn't write down the levels.
If you're new to D&D most DMs would have you start at level 1 so you can learn your character's class. Multiclassing isn't possible at level 1.
Additionally multiclassing may mean it's more confusing for a new player because you have to know how two (or more classes) work.
I highly recommend you pick one class and stick to it.
i'll tell my friend about this info
Also, I don't recommend you play a Chaotic Evil character. They can be very disruptive to the table (being CE they're very selfish when D&D is suppose to be a cooperative game) to the point where a lot of DMs ban CE characters.
well it's not mine it's my friends
The advice still stands.
i made a half elf bard and yes i shall relay the advice
well my friend told me that they have other classes as they progress in a story they get those classes like they are on standby
I'm like brand new to all of this. Wanted to play for a long time but never had the opportunity. I've more or less been fiddling with creating multiple characters, so I can have a variety that can be adaptable for whatever campaign is cooked up and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if one of my character backstories is too much? I've heard that too much tragedy makes for a less fun time but I have no intentions of creating the ultimate Broody McBrooderson lol
They don't write those down on the character sheets. Your friend hasn't earned those classes yet.
Have you read the free Basic Rules yet?
i see i shall relay that back
I've been trying to make my way through it
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
also do i have to do what my friend did as in the sheet or does the D&D beyond one work just as fine?
D&D Beyond is fine but that's up to your DM what they want.
ah i see thank you for the helpful advice have a good day
I didn't even know this was a series. Thanks a ton!
What would be the best race for a mounted combatant?
Dragonborn with crocodile
opinion on a backstory?
a lore bard half-elf that had been captured by cultists due to his search of knowledge getting him in trouble, they experimented on him and he became a half-golem with his jaw and left arm replaced by wood mechanisms. he has a wind-up (like a toy) on the back of his head and he cannot speak unless it is winded up. he can wind himself up but will become exhausted for the next turn
As a DM, I also be curious to know what kind of knowledge he was searching for.
The exhaustion thing is an unusual choice, though, because exhaustion has very heavy consequences.
If he turns that six times, it’ll kill him.
I can’t imagine winding it up is that hard. 😅
i see, im very very new to this and my only background is lorewriting for non-TT RPing. thought i'd give myself a massive disadvantage because that's how you get creativity
I don't recommend including gameplay mechanics to your backstory.
I’d say that’s not just a massive disadvantage, but a disproportionate one.
and certainly, i've rarely heard of a person being punished with becoming a windup toy so im sure this is unique too
Please read the Exhaustion rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/appendix-a-conditions#Exhaustion
Level Effect
1 Disadvantage on ability checks
2 Speed halved
3 Disadvantage on attack rolls and saving throws
4 Hit point maximum halved
5 Speed reduced to 0
6 Death
Even one level of exhaustion is pretty rough.
yeah it seems very disproportionate for sure, but that's why someone else should be winding him up but i can see how that can quickly become a problem if i want to talk
Half-golem isnt a playable race and isn't a thing in 5E (they were in 3E). This needs DM approval for various reasons. You can have a Custom Lineage but again is "Ask your DM"
i know, i think my DM can make it work but obviously, communication is key. i just think it's a very unique idea and certainly isn't overpowered at all since i'm at a huge disadvantage (set on fire, cant talk all the time)
thank you for the guidance though, the exhaustion might be abit much
huge disadvantage (set on fire, cant talk all the time)
Why...? Anyway, this belongs in #character-discussion
Hi
So there was this dnd like website
Where a dm showed us a map with our sprites on it and he added enemies and moved us around while we were watching it live in real time
Anyone knows the name of the website ?
Seems like your DM was using a virtual tabletop (VTT).
yeah should i move there?
and i like unique concepts, especially ones that limits me. i'm a big believer that restrictions breed creativity
Works on android phones ?
Yes, I would recommend to continue about your character concept there.
I don't know which one does. Most are preferable to be on desktop.
So no suggestions?
I don't know which one your DM was using.
Roll20 is one of the most common
But there are others it could have been
Without more info it's hard to say
I need any app or website that works with android phones
It's on your DM to decide which VTT to use, not the players.
I need it for other things
What's a VTT?
Do you just want an app for creating characters, running games, etc?
I'm making a game out of dnd with it.
A thing that i play with my friends
Now we can't get together so I'm trying to find any place to play together online I can't find anything better than a vtt
Yes
So you want to be a DM.
Kinda yes
There is no "kinda"... it's a yes or no question.
Are you actually going to play D&D?
Then this isn't the place to ask if it's not D&D.
It's a game that we improvised
Kinda like dnd
But not dnd
#non-dnd-topics would be a better place to ask. This channel is to help new players to D&D.
Something that we have fun with
And those websites will help us
What are the steps to be done generally before I can play with other people?
Virtual table top
Thanks
Read the rules, learn how to make a character, generate some character concepts.
Optionally, watch some gameplay via YouTube or Twitch, just to see how things proceed.
And then it's good? I already know them not perfectly but still.
That's a wonderful idea thanks. Gotta do this before I begin.
I’d say if you have that covered, you’re probably good to look for folks to play with.
It's good to have a general idea of the rules but you don't have to know them all by heart. You can always reference the books as you play.
what are the different play styles mean?
There’s no defined terms. It’s just “explain what parts you like/don’t like, what sort of game you might wanna play,” such as political intrigue vs. dungeon-crawl vs. classic hero’s journey. The more specific you can be, the better rather than worrying about any shorthand.
where it says start with either scale mail, leather armour or chain mail (if proficient)
does it mean proficiency in light, medium or heavy or does it mean proficiency in those exact armours
Do people play d&d on discord?
all the time
the if proficient only applies to chainmail
K
and you cannot be proficient in a single armor only the types of armor
light medium heavy shields
Im unsure if im supposed to have 6,4 or 2 spell slots for cleric
What does the Cleric table say? https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/cleric#TheClericTable
The slots available depends on your class level.
I was about to start my first campaign but then 2 of the players left right before and now idk what to do
I'm a player in it
Hello and sorry for just jumping in here, hope I don't get in the way of the current discussion. I'm completely new to dungeons and dragons - my only experience is BG3 and somewhat limited experience with role playing games like OS2 as well . I'm wondering if the set Dragons and dungeons startar set 5Th edition dragons of stormwreck isle is a good place to start? Also considering adding dungeons and dragons essential kit 5TH edition after a review suggested they go well together.
hi there long time DM. new to all this technology, I'm from Iceland so its bewildering to see so many dnd players and DM's!
I highly recommend Lost mines of Phandelver! even tho its older then most models it still really holds up and Phandalin can become a really nice starting ground for future events. I love to use it instead of greenest in Tyranny of dragons for example
i have 3 cantrips and 2 spell slots. But spell slots are affected by my wisdom modifier and my level. My wisdom is 17 so plus 3 and my level is 1
Spell slots are set, the number of spells you can prepare is based on your level and wisdom modifier
what does that mean
Did you look at the table I linked to? Level 1 says you only have two level one spell slots available to cast with. How many spells you know though can be more than you have spell slots.
ou prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
at level one you have two spell slots that you can use to cast spells 🙂
you can cast 2 spells per long rest prepare 4 spells from the cleric spell list and get 2 free spell preperations from your domain
two free spells from your domain meaning you have two extras that you know that don't count against spells known
could you give an example
are you guys talking about cantrips
domain spells at the moment 🙂
like i have healing word, bless, guidance bolt, and sanctuary as my 1st level spells
no idea what a domain spell is
No - about how spell slots vs spells known for clerics
"Each domain has a list of spells-its domain spells-that you gain at the cleric levels noted in the domain description. Once you gain a domain spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.
If you have a domain spell that doesn't appear on the cleric spell list, the spell is nonetheless a cleric spell for you."
what sbuclass are you
Stormwreck Isle is a good place to begin. It does what may be the best job among starter sets in giving new players and especially DMs a good sense of how to play.
yeah
i dont get the difference between prep spells and spell slots
like would it be six different spells total but only 2 i can use?
Thank you, reading up about it atm. Would you consider it "noob" friendly? Maybe worth mentioning we are just two people who are going to play - so just one player and one DM
yes. those do not count against your known spells. so you have your known spells plus faeire fire and sleep
basically
or you can use the same one twice if you wanted
im not on about twilight cleric domain spells tho
LMoP would require serious tweaking to work for one player and a DM.
basically i wrote down six spells
Prepared spells are spells you have prepared and could cast assuming you have spell slots available and at the right level to cast it with. If they aren't prepared for that day, you can't cast them.
not including cantrips or domain spells
i need 4 instead then
its a fairly straight forward adventure. just be carefull of the first ecounter with the Goblin ambush it can be tricky with few players
and i can choose 4, but i can only cast 2?
can you not cast a spell slot spell anymore until your next long rest or does it go on cooldown
per long rest y es
okay so for instance i have Healing word, bless, sanctuary and guiding bolt as my 4 spells
Okey then it's not for us, we want an easy set with premade story to start with, and as little tweaking as possible. I'm guessing the starter set 5Th edition is the one to go for in that case?
yeah
and then i can use healing word once and guiding bolt once. but after i cant use any
correct
Think of prepared spells as a menu at a restaurant and your spell slots as the number of meals you can order from that menu
or i can us bless twice
yeah correct
ahh
yes thats correct!
There's a series of adventures on dmsguild, I believe the 1st is called first blush, that would be perfect for you, they are made for a single new player and dm
make sense now, thanks
I can’t remember if Stormwreck Isle of the Essentials Kit has rules for sidekicks, which would help balance. You can also find free adventures for one player and one DM on DMsGuild by Beth and Jonathan Ball. https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?author=Beth Ball
which spells can i use multiple times then?
Cantrips
like cantrips and domain spells
Not domain spells - they use slots
Domain spells still require slots
I’m basically in the same situation as dr except I’m going to play as bard
and it’s tough to figure out what’s going on
Spell mechanics stay the same across classes
wait so domain spells use slots, but they dont use prep slots. ahh
there’s domain spells for bard?
so like its a part of a menu that is always there for me to choose from
Don't think so
no
Yeah a private one that others might not have access to
ahhhhhh
The difference between bards and clerics is that bards can’t change their spells as easily. You can swap one and learn a new one when you level up
i get spells now, this was extremely helpful. thanks
except for 1 spell tho
my racial spell for aasimar which is light
is it used like a cantrip (infinite usage) or like a spell slot
Its a cantrip so you can cast unlimited timrs
so bards have 4 spells in total at 1st level right?
Light is a cantrip
After looking at the website I'm a bit confused since they are so cheap so I assume I need the starter kit to play for example first blush, correct?
You only need the Basic Rules to play First Blush.
alr thanks, very last thing. On my character sheet. should i put my domain spells with my 1st level spell list?
You would need to know the basic rules iirc, but there are pregenerated characters
Yeah, but make sure you remember they are always prepared
alr thanks

Basic rules here @vernal berry
Thank you.
I feel like I’m not good at improv
Np
Hopefully I’ll get better
Dw you will get better the more you play
But I feel like I’m saying things that are out of character for my character
just a game, you don’t gotta role play perfectly
You don’t get better at things by not doing them.
Yeah I definitely want to play more
I also kind of want to find another game so I can make a new character lol
You might browse #looking-for-players, then.
im tryna play as a bard in my upcoming adventure and it’s confusing me a bit
Ah. You just get a pdf file and you print the map yourself, correct? First blush.
You could always change the character's personality to be more similar to yours so what you say automatically is less out of character
like where’s the “bard table”
In the class description: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#TheBardTable
Well I already had this character made and I’d like to stick to it
That can sometimes work but you may need to tune the character to the DM's game
that’s…. A lot….
I'm thinking of making a ghost slayer character (Once I get the chance to even play
)
I know what I really want to play
my dm said it didn’t really matter what my background was since we would all “wake up with no memory of what happened”
is there like a list of spells I can choose from for bard
In phb
You could either reply to the posts in #looking-for-players or post yourself in #750812887697588356 by following the instructions in #find-a-game.
I’ll look
If you are on dnd beyond it will only show bard spells
Here, but not all are visible without paying: https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/class/bard
The only pain is I can't find chat play styles cause my voice would be eradicated by unholy static
Do you mean text-only?
I mean if they wish to use voice they can but I won't is what I mean, text only or even voice as long as I am using text
You could always ask if that would be acceptable to only use text. Or find text-only games (also called play-by-post).
Aight thanks
I never touched dnd a day in my life where do I start?

The above links should get you started. If you have specifc questions, feel free to ask!
after ive finished making my character on d&d beyond what do i do?
do i just go to the channel to find a game and message the people who post
for warlock, are its subclass spells counted towards the spell list or are they free
such as the fiend
they just get added to your spell list.
basically he has 2 spell slots plus 2 more spells from the subclass?
The spell slots don’t change. What you get from the subclass is a wider variety of available spells.
a fiend warlock at level 1 has 1 spell slot and 2 spells known. the subclass spells are added to the list of possible choices for spells know, but arent extra spells known on top like domain spells for cleric are
oh so he has to choose 2 spells only
yeah
Hi!
Hi me and my girl friend are looking in to trying to play d&d we have no one to play with in irl and have never played before. Just seeing if anyone is willing to give us the run down and maybe jump in the amazing world of d&d. Thanks
Check out #looking-for-players for DMs posting games. You can also make a post for you and your girlfriend in #750812887697588356. You can also check out sites like Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums for game postings.
Lots of people use discord can virtual table tops (VTT) for games
For the first blush - don't you even need a typical "DND dice"? Do I really only just need the pdf files and the basic rules to play it?
You'll need some kind of dice. But you can roll online easily enough
You’d basically need:
Dice set
PHB
DMG
A module is optional and highly recommended, but besides that yea
.. sometimes I think my brain believes it lives in the 1600 and technology doesn't exist
Whats a module and PHB?
An Adventure Module is a D&D book with a prewritten adventure - a game that's all written out and ready for you to use.
PHB is short for Player's Handbook.
Technically you can run D&D with just the free basic rules - the other books add more options/rules and prewritten adventures.
Ah okey. So I got a module but nothing else then haha. But DND behind app should work as roller and for the basic rules.
Yes that can work
What is DMG? I assume it doesn't stand for what it typical stands for in games.
Dungeon Master's Guide
Ah. Might be wrong - but the module from first blush does include some guiding for DM, so seems I got that one covered as well.
Uhhh hi! My name's Mack, and I'm pretty new to DND. Can someone help me learn?-

Both are linked above.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
Thank you!! Sorry
Just to make sure, to land a hit on an enemy(or the enemy on a character), the result of the D20 has to be equal or greater than the AC, right? And if it hits, you need to roll a dice for the corresponding damage?
I see :00 i was having a bit of trouble with it c: sounds easier when you put it that way :D
The result of the d20 with all modifiers applied
I see :0 and each class has proficiency on certain weapons, got it >8))
Yes.
Is it easier for a newbie who likes to write to make a campaign or should they learn to play a bit first?
You should learn to play first.
I know some basics, but I wanted an honest opinion!! XD
While writing is something you have experience with, game design is a big componet.
I actually take high school classes for game design! /info
That's great. Still recommend playing a pre-written adventure so you reference points.
Okay! I appreciate the insight :))
Happy to help.
I will add, when it comes to a campaign story, it's not recommend to plan out how you believe a story is going to unfold.
Mostly due to the high chance, that the players will do something unexpected.
Mhm!
If you want to write a story then write a story. As DM, you're a co-storyteller with your players. The DM presents situations for your players to act/react to. They may not go in the direction you want them to.
Being a DM is like herding cats
Any tips on becoming a DM? I wanna work on being a DM bc it sounds fun, plus I like story making and creating chunks of lore + backstories
Start with a pre-written single session adventure.
Alrighty! Anything else that would work?

Happy to help.
There are more ways to find group online.
Start with that, and if you need more help feel free to ask.
Soo wait someone said a while ago the “5e” will be over ina few months. Whats 5e, 5th edition?
He was talkin as if a newer version of DnD was coming or something? I’m just wondering before I go n buy stuff n it’s outdated in a few months lol.
5E is 5th Edition.
WotC is doing an update to 5E this year. Think of it as patch 5.5E.
Okay what does that mean exactly like what will change? Some rules or something?
The core rules, particularly the PHB, is being tweaked.
Ahh okay, so hold off before getting into anything right now?
You can read the Unearth Arcana playtest PDF files
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/ua
Coo thanks brah.
No one is going to force you to play the 2024 revision of 5E (aka 5.5E). You can still play your 5E books.
I'm going to be sticking to my 5E books.
Hello! Im brand new to D&D and im looking for the best way to learn about the basics before I make a character and join a campaign. Any advice?
Are there any online games that I could join? I’m new to online dnd.
Check #find-a-game
Look up videos explaining the rules. I recommend the channel “Howitsplayed”. The channel has great visuals and explanations of the core rules. If you have the money for it I also recommend getting the player’s handbook, the monster manual, and the dungeon master’s guide.

I have a small question. IF i am lvl3 wizard wanting to cast Comprehend languages which requires "(a pinch of soot and salt)" as components... where do i obtain soot and salt? ... i have a component pouch as some gear/item. thanks for any help
If you’ve got a component pouch, you’re already covered.
i was figuring because nothing in rules or such said "see a vendor" for items. so the compenents in parenthasees(sp) are covered with that pouch. I appreciate your response
If I multiclass ranger/warlock, can I cast a spell I know bc I'm a warlock with one of my ranger spell slots?
Yes
If you have both the Spellcasting class feature and the Pact Magic class feature from the warlock class, you can use the spell slots you gain from the Pact Magic feature to cast spells you know or have prepared from classes with the Spellcasting class feature, and you can use the spell slots you gain from the Spellcasting class feature to cast warlock spells you know.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Spellcasting
Can I prepare darkness (a level two spell) with just a one level dip, or do I need to get second level spells to get the spell?
If a component has a cosst, or is consumed, you need to actually find it btw
a component pouch or focus only replaces non-consumed, costless materials
you prepare/learn spells indiviually for each class
so you would need to take 3 levels in warlock (or 5 in ranger) to get 2nd level spells of that class
if a spell required a forked twig branch i need to remember to forage for one onmy journey?
does it say it needs one of certain value, or if it's consumed?
if it doesnt have a specified value and isnt consumed, a component pouch or focus lets you ignore it
My main problem right now is that I work 5 days a week, usually 9-10 hour shifts, I’m trying to find time to play more dnd
Spell: Locate object
2nd lvl divination
Components: V, S, M(a forked twig)
So no, it doesn’t have a specified cost or say it’s consumed.
Which means your component pouch is enough.
Thank you. i appreciate the advice for a newb
Hi guys
Welcome
Hello! Never played before. Created a character and looking to start playing online. Any advice on how to find a group to play with?
I have just written the backstory for a new character of mine. I've never built a character before, so would anyone like to read the backstory and give me some tips to develop my character? It's short and to the point
I am not experience player so take this with grain of salt . From my perspective it's depend on your character some characters who start as funny characters or they have one specific archetype slowly surely become deep characters by slowing putting different layers on them . You can also try short sweet backstory or long backstory but in term of long backstory you don't have remember every aspect of your backstory but the most important aspect and if you want dm to more emphasis on your backstory you can always ask the dm how it can relate when the dm story. Personally from me I try to make characters based on race then what kinda of class would they go for an example of this can be if I want to make spiritual Buddhist turtle then I would choice turtle then make Soccesor and subclass would be monk .
Hopefully this helps
For a player, just the PHB, and even that isn't really needed
What PHB?
the player handbook
but most of what is contained in it is available online for free
at least all the stuff you need to make a character and play
Oh
@fair cliff Thats the kind of stuff I had in mind. My character backstory is a bit humorous and ironic and it really helps flesh out the idea of the character. I can DM you the backstory if youd like
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
This is everything you need to play
the PHB and other books just give you more options and advice, basically
True. I just recommend that they do a light read through those three books or at least know some of the magic items and monsters.
@tulip halo If only that wasnt $90 worth of material
that's what I was thinking, yeah...
Funny how WotC found out how to monetize imagination
spending 100-120$ MSRP for 2 books just for something your DM can explain seems a bit excessive
well, yes, but luckily homebrew is awesome and the rules needed to play are free
There are free pdfs that you can download to your phones files. I don’t recommend anyone get hardcovers unless they have the money to collect or if the book isn’t available online for free.
Thats what I found lol
I'm building a paladin. Can somebody explain to me how the channel divinity works? Like, can I use one of them per long rest, or can I use each once per long rest or smth like that
I mean... it's not really just imagination
It's intellectual property
designing a ttrpg and material for it well takes a lot of work and effort
think of it like charges that you can spend on any
you get one charge, and it recharges on any rest (short or long)
you can spend that charge on any of your channel divinity options
I could be wrong, but channel divinity is only used by clerics. It takes a short or long rest to regain. The basic version of it turns undead. Turned undead have to move as far away from you as they can. They cannot move to a space within thirty feet of you. When you choose a domain for a cleric they get more versions of channel divinity.
paladins get CD as well
I was wrong they do get it too
but they never get a second charge, and they get fewer options
I didn’t realize they got it as an oath ability😭
yeah it's buried in the oath text
I mainly play Paladin too💀
thanks!
are you allowed to have a shield and use the Dueling fighting style?
Hello. Im new to dnd me and me and my friends wanna try to play it. But the thing is i want to take the role as dm any tips or recommendations i should know about?
I'd recommend running a pre-written campaign before trying to write your own
Run peril in pine brook

Head on over to #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
yes. nothing in the dueling fighting style prohibits a shield in your other hand
Hi, I'm new to the actual DnD playing. I've always wanted to learn to play... Watching Fools Gold, recently Vox Machina, and playing BG3, it all has inspired me to want to learn play so bad. But... I have no idea where to truly start... I have the Players Handbook, and I can understand the basics. I also know there is loads of differences between BG3, and actual DnD. I'm hoping someone can lead me in the right direction to get started.
isnt there a command for something about going from bg3 to dnd?
like it gives you info
The differences aren’t actually that big to be honest
Could someone possibly list maybe 3 or so fun/easy classes for new comers? Specifically for 5e.
I'm really stumped trying to figure out what my little guy should be
Barbarian, Warlock and fighter I would say
wait literally or figuratively?
Literally. As of right now I want to try and create a memorable but strong little guy.
That sounds like a dwarf to me in terms of race
Barbarian is pretty simple, run into combat, rage and beat literally anything in the way
Warlock, Doesn’t have that much spells so kinda simple, invocations are a little complex but fun
Fighter is pretty simple just hit stuff
are you invisoning a magic dude or a fighter dude or a mix of both
Currently I'm split on making a goblin or a kobold for funsies so I don't really know how well magic would work with them
Idek if it's possible to make one of those necessarily "strong"
I love kobolds nice choice
any class can work with any race
kobold sorcerers are a popular combo
Absolutely it’s possible
Kobold barbarians are funny
easy? rogue, fighter, barbarian
fun? subjective
Kobold lore fits well with rogue
barbarian for newcomers never feels fun
A kobold barbarian would be pretty cool
why?

yeah there it is
Everyone just has different play styles, I like making goofy lil guys that have the power to blow stuff up
artificer?
Yup
As of now I've made both little guys up in my head visually
Kobold artificer is my go to for AL
one of the three classes i would really recommend against for newcomers
Yeah, you don’t wanna play an artificer if you’re new
They're both kind of just small but wearing a lot of clothing like baggy overalls with big fluffy coats over them with big work boots sort of and little goggles
currently in a campaign with a goblin sorcerer so there isnt really like a set thing of race to class
That's really good to know
What are the other two?
There is a subclass for the Fighter that lets a creature of any size grow to be a large sized player
combat feels samsies all the time and unfortunately being constraned as the strong guy all the time feels linear in rp especially since its harder for newcomers too open up
Hulk type little guy sounds killer
So you can be a smol lil guy who turns into a swole jacked kobold wielding a great sword
Literally the hulk
if you are brand new i suggest going fighter, rogue, maybe monk, or barbarian.
I have tried to play d&d before but have had to leave out of campaigns due to irl related things
Yo I need some help setting up an encounter for my players but im a bit at a loss at what monsters to use
So the player party is lvl3 and there are in a dungeon with kobolds that is going to be invaded by spiders... So i think im going to use a bit of the " Spider Swarm" enemy and some of the " Giant Spiders" as monsters for them to fight
But I want to have a good spider boss at the end but i Just cant find the right monster stat sheet for it.... Any suggestions?
But I do remember enjoying a rogue in Pathfinder
The subclass is called “Rune Knight” and it is actually pretty strong and it makes it so that small races can wield heavy weapons
It was a goblin rogue that used a big curved great sword he would swing with his whole body, sort of flailing himself towards the enemy
Rune knight is very fun
that will live in my head tonight
That’s why I recommend it lol, especially for small races
I'll definitely give that a try, it sounds super cool
He hit like a truck
im a bit biased and will always recommend ranger
Yup, it also has out of combat versatility that most fighters lack which is a massive plus
How do I choose to be a rune knight exactly?
Also what kind of app or anything should I use to make the character, one that's simple
At 3rd level you get to choose a subclass of your class
Ohh
thats a tricky question
dnd beyond but you need the books to get any real use out of it
D&D beyond is the main official app, however you have to buy the books on it
Yeah, doing it by hand is nice but tedious sometimes
Druid and wizard
also doing it on like a roll20 sheet and manually writting it down is an option
Yeah, fair
By hand lets you borrow your friends book and lets you do homebrew/custom stuff a lot easier than d&D beyond
Pathfinder 1st edition?
I was told when I tried started out to use the 53 companion app and path builder app, are those any good?
Ngl Druid is simple if all they do is wildshape
I don't really know, I made the little guy on the path builder aop
pathbuilder is for pathfinder and its pathfinder 2e
That would probably be 2e
Also ty
Pathbuilder is 2e only iirc
Which isn’t really a great idea
rune knight
You’ll run out of wildshapes fast
I know I was describing it
That’s fair
Dnd 5e rogue is a little sad compared to pathfinder rogue fyi
just play a paladin with a longbow. Tons of fun
i think most full casters are difficult to get into due to the variety in spells and not knowing which spells arent neccessarily "good" but come up more often than not
The more creative you are with it the stronger it is though
Yeah
I think warlock solves that issue though because you can change spells easy while having an extremely good fallback option
warlock is the easiest but are more difficult to manage recourses
yeah and i love me warlocks
How?
counter point: the more fun you're having the better it is
true
who cares if it's powerful. If playing a monk is fun to you, then have at it
The rogue isn’t super strong in combat, however out of combat you can do some of the most fun stuff ever like running around, climbing walls, using tools to make traps
steal
It ain’t a counterpoint tbh some peoples version of fun is being strong
If a PDK is your calling then go, it doesn't matter that you've barely got a subclass
yes
that's fair too
I was just saying that power isn't intrinsically tied to "goodness"
I mean… a str build would be better at climbing walls, I have 0 idea what you mean by running around, and making traps from tools is not RAW and is entirely up to the DM
What does "great weapon fighting" mean?
I find rogue just gives a lot of free reign out of combat and allows you to have as much fun as you want while still being good in combat
Using a 2 handed weapon like a great sword or battle axe
Ty
it's a fighting style that lets you re-roll a 1 or a 2 when you are using a specific weapon
Ty ty
When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make with a melee weapon that you are wielding with two hands, you can reroll the die and must use the new roll, even if the new roll is a 1 or a 2. The weapon must have the two-handed or versatile property for you to gain this benefit.
Tbh I’m blanking rn in examples but I’ve had fun breaking in through windows, running off buildings, climbing walls (I was a tabaxi) and being a skill monkey
steal keys off guards
Yup
I played an arcane trickster for AL, I got to a lot of devious activities as a rogue
oneshot the bbeg with smite/sneak attack CRIT combo
But I’ve found Artificer is my ultimate fun
i played an arcane trickster and was zooming on houses to deliver letters as a side hustle
♾️ familiars and bag of dimension bombs does that
I got wings of flying from an adventure and promptly went 140 ft per round with mobile
Jumped people with my shadow blade as well
i had a horizon walker ranger that could zoom pretty fast with some winged boots
Artificers can make those
this is all great convo. why don't we move to #dnd-discussion
I hate the auto emoji discord has
What would be a good fighting style for a fighter kobold or goblin?
With hopes of making it to lvl 3 without dying to choose rune knight
what are you asking about
kobold and goblins are races, not fighting styles
as like in a min max strong way
What weapons are you using
Outside of defence what fighting style you choose depends on what weapons you wanna use
Then go defence or great weapon fighting
Ty ty
I’m going to recommend using a long sword until you become level 3 btw
Depends if you want offence or defence
Yeah, smal creatures like kobold have a very bad time with heavy weapons
Or ask you DM to waive the heavy property of Greatswords, just cause having disadvantage on every attack really ain’t that fun
However, great weapon fighting style still applies if you make a two handed attack with a longsword
So still a good option
Very helpful stuff to know about now
I would've been struggling really badly with a great sword early on most likely
Yeah, so long sword with great weapon fighting is pretty good or dueling fighting style
Ty ty
Good luck with everything. Hope the campaign goes well
Best of luck to you too friend
Good luck, have fun with your kobold good sir
Tysm, I'll try my best to keep Hoss alive
I have a question about roll20.net site before I dwell into it to much, could it work to play on one device? Like DM and player use the same computer? Since I'm gonna assume using the site through a phone will be a pain in the ass. It's just me and my girlfriend who wanna try a solo game(Me as DM and she as player)
its difficult because the DM sees way more info than the player
if you had two monitors, you could potentially use it on two browsers but then there is the issue of keyboard and mouse sharing
ive heard that owlbear rodeo works better on phones than most other VTTs
Okey, thank you, gonna have a look at that.
The website is overall great, though the starting sets are sort of limited, not that i'm complaining since it's free, but i'm wondering if there is any free/cheap resources online to buy and import into owlbear? I have bought the first blush, so atm trying to see how I can setup that into owlbear, otherwise I have to wait until tomorrow before I can print out the pdf files.
the idea behind owlbear is that its very basic and simple to use
i dont know about any kind of import functionality
Atleast on my end, I can upload some stuff from my computer for scenes/maps etc.
yeah you can upload maps and tokens
What are some basic things I should know as a brand new dnd player
How your PCs skills abilities work, what you can do during combat,
You should learn the basic like he said then try to play a one shot and get an idea of how everything feels and works
One shots are one session games. Great for new players
I’m still somewhat new myself and after you get a feel for the game it’s pretty simple and lots of fun
And honestly if there’s one thing that I’ve learned rather quickly. And something actually I don’t think I see this said very often you don’t need to know every rule, things can and often do change.
All you have to do is ask the DM if you can do “this or that” and that’s kinda it
https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources there are some quick guides on this link for general game terms and what to do on your turn
Does anyone know if maps in d&d beyond has dragons of ice spire peak?
Doesn’t look like it
Oh…that’s disappointing. Thanks for letting me know!
You can check the dndbeyond website market place to see which ones have the Maps icon
First time trying to set up a campaign, and i'm using owlbear rodeo, do the dungeon master typically "control" the player movements? I tried joining my room through my phone as a player as a test, and I don't know if I'm blind but seems like the player can't really do anything? I assume the player communicate to the DM as what she/he wants to do, and DM carries it out for them? Or am I just being stupid atm?
#third-party may help alot of people who use it hang out there
Hi all
DnD basic player here, the original box sets and Cyclopaedia. Used to do basic home brew DM mainly and play a bit.
Did read AD&D thru 90s I guess 2nd edition.
About to get back into game, mainly to run kids games as DM. Bit torn on what version to do, can see 3.5 is still popular, but starter sets on v5, D&D one soon to launch, best to wait?
Clearly an over thinker, but didn't want to restart on the wrong foot. Will be very basic games so considered sticking basic rules even but don't want to hamper them.
Any advice gratefully received. Or views on 3.5 Vs 4 Vs 5.
I'd just go for 5e, all 5e stuff will be compatible with onednd when it releases
Also 5e is miles easier to understand for kids than the older editions IMO
Odd question is making one of the players a twist villain a bad idea?
Are you asking as a DM?
Sorta
I don’t plan to DM right now but I wanna learn some of the dos and don’ts
Since I really really really wanna be one some day
You're best off asking in #dm-discussion

You don't need to read all of the rules before finding a game, but having a look over character creation and combat rules before finding a game can help speed things up. And of course you can ask questions here!
Character Creation is one of the things you can have a go at before finding a game. There are step by step guides, and as a practice PC you don't need to think too hard. Just pick any class and race and see if you can make it- once you've made one PC you've basically got the idea for making any PC.
There's the find a game channels here, and also other places- r/lfg on reddit, the game finders on VTT platforms like roll20's looking for group, so on.
In person also check for local facebook groups or check to see if meetup.com has any. Local game stores are a big one to check out, even if to ask if they know of local groups if they don't host.
or kidnapping friends and playing a oneshot with them.
It can take some time, and one of the first big hurdles. It's a bit like online dating. You are going to spend multiple hours a week (usually) with these people, so you want to make sure you all vibe well, and it can take time to find or make that.
Also sadly some online groups are a bit flakey.
Looking into oneshots, Adventure League and westmarches (feel free to ask what these are) can be a good way to join lower commitment games and see if you find people whose play style clicks with yours, and then you slowly network and form a group together from recommending each other to games.
Or you can be lucky and hit it off with the first group you join.
Communication is a key part of all of this and session 0s and chatting with the DM before joining can be a good way to feel out if you all suit each other before commiting to a game.
Thanks for the insight, seems pretty comprehensive
Already have the idea for a character in mind and i think i have it saved on DnD beyond
Probably not gonna move to in-person games, for now at least
And yeah, Adventure League and westmarches do sound interesting, i'd like to learn more
?tag westmarch
No tag westmarch found.
Thank you for the assistance!
Okay, one last try to see if I remeber, then I'll just explain
?westmarches
?tag westmarches
No tag westmarches found.
Nope, okay- So westmarches are really where there are many players and no real set schedule for play, where 1 (or more commonly now, multiple) DM will run short episodic episodes set in the same region of a world so there is something of an overaching story. This means it's much easier to jump in and out, joining the games that you can. You might not always play with the same players or characters, but you're interacting with the same world.
?AL
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

Ah got the AL one. AL is organised play that, so long as your PC follows AL rules and is the right level, can theoretically join any table AL that has space for you. Players might only play for a little bit before needing to bounce again, and you'll play prewritten modules or modules written for AL. Commitment is preferred, but it's designed that players can join a table for a little while and then leave if they have to, and then join a AL different table. The AL channels will have more information.
Sounds like a good option for an introductiory game or two
That might be too advanced for me, i don't even know what modules are lol
Westmarches are definitely ways to meet people, and well managed westmarches can be amazing. They do have their own drawbacks too based on their style and limitations, so worth trying out a few game types. I essentially got into more traditional D&D after playing westmarches for years, and while there are some aspects of them I miss, there are other things they were prone to that I'm glad to not deal with anymore.
You might see 'modules' refer to prewritten adventures/campaigns. Stories already planned out for your DM to run. You might have heard of 'Lost mines of Phandelver' which was the adventure/module for the starter kit for a long while, or 'Curse of Strahd' so on.
Visited the westmarches website you linked, but i can't figure out how to find a game
Never heard of them, what are they about?
Sorry, that one just explains the origin and concept of a westmarch. #looking-for-community here will have westmarch servers listed.
Ah, i see, thanks for clarifying
They can be about anything. Lost Mines is basically a 'turtorial' story to help groups learn to play the game while investigating said mines. Curse of Strahd is a gothic horror adventure set in Ravenloft, a world beyond the mists where your characters have become trapped and involved in the schemes of a Vampire Lord. I mentioned those two because they're one of the more well known ones for 5e, being older and for lower levels.
What’s the best way to keep track of player stats on with physical content?
Hm, sounds interesting. Probably will check them out tomorrow tho cus my brain's already burning lol
Thanks for insight!
Try the #dm-discussion you’ll find some good advice there
Thank you
I created my own first level character by myself, now my stats are somewhat a little high for a level one, I made sure to record all my rolls and writing my stats down with my phone (camera so it’s in my camera roll) would it be okay to use that character for certain dnd games or should I create a whole new one? I quite like my character but I could always reroll to drop the stats a little? Thank you in advance for help.
I recorded it for my friend because he and I are playing a campaign together. Also to add.
That's something you'd have to discuss with your DM.
Very common for pre-rolled stats to not be accepted
You come to a DM with those, even with recorded rolls the DM has no way of verifying wheter that's a record of your first roll or 27th 😛
Very true. I had recorded my creating from the start most of my dice hit 4s or 5s one triple 6 and I was amazed but also surprised by it. But I’ll be using standard array for my first character, I just wanted to see what my rolls would be like. Thank you for the advice 🙂
I’m new to player creation but I’ve dm’d once before, I understand how certain dms would feel/be
The in person games I went to used the "roll 4d6 and drop the lowest" thing and then anything under 10 got immediately changed to 10
But it's kind of a give and take because those DMs were also stingy with magic items
Hi everyone, I played DnD when I was in highschool many moons ago (3rd edition) and I haven't played ever since so I'm very rusty. I'm educating myself but every now and then I come across something that I can't find an answer to. Is here the right place to ask those questions? An example would be I have a question about concentration when casting a spell, I have a general idea about it and I read very different answers about this, especially what breaks it and what not. I would love if somebody could explain it to me but also let me know where this information can be found from an official source. That way I learn where and how to look up stuff and hopefully I will have fewer questions moving forward.
We've got #dnd-rules for asking about rules 😎
It’s also in the Basic Rules themselves: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Concentration
Thanks for the help up there folks.
Think I'll go with basic to get going (group has played the boardgame beginners set also) then aim for 5e once rolling.
I'll prob home brem the adventure to tailor it
But any links to basic adventures appreciated
Good beginner adventures include The Delian Tomb (https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-L_0WX-KKXsZA22VHr5j), Peril in Pinebrook (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure), The Silvyr Tower (https://www.shacknews.com/cortex/article/437/the-silvyr-tower-a-dampd-5e-one-shot-written-specifically-for-new-dms), The Green Blight (https://howtogm.guide/resources/the-green-blight-v1.0.pdf), or any of Winghorn Press's stuff (https://www.dmsguild.com/browse.php?author=Winghorn Press).
Why is it hard to find a group
Because it like any social event, several people need to agree on a time and set amount of time to do something together.
There are things that can be done to make the process easier.
To say nothing of finding compatible people.
I think DnD is also slightly tougher because it isn't like finding a group to play bowling, where the game is always the same at least. It can vary wildly depending on the table and party.
True.
It also somewhat dependent on having the same people show up somewhat consistently.
Especially if it's never made clear how much of a commitment people are agreeing to.
I mean, even when it is perfectly clear, it's often a struggle. I get it's so commonplace that it's a meme at this point, but it really is surprising how difficult it is to get a bunch of people who really like DnD to actually show up and play DnD.
A lot of folks are also wary of being the DM. It seems common enough for people to say, "We have a group, but now we need a DM" without realizing one of them could be.
Very true, and also exactly how I got started DMing.
I agree that anyone can be a DM, but i think that for a good rpg game a good DM is very important, and is not that easy yo be a DM
Keeping things within the scope of #dnd-newcomers , while it is tough to find a compatible group.
What I often recommend is start with playing one shots.
This can be either through Adventure League, West Marches, or one shots of your own choosing.
By having people commit to one adventure, you can just start playing and it isn't dependent on the same people being available.
Eventually as you start playing more one shots, you'll start to see who's availability matches your own and you'll get to know who you enjoy playing dnd with.
Then simply reach out to the people that you enjoy playing with and have a similar availability to yours.
I disagree, but saying more would be getting too in the weeds given this channel's intent.
Same. I'd be happy to continue this in #dnd-discussion.
I get what an action is, but when do you use a bonus action or a reaction?
You can take a bonus action only when a special ability, spell, or other feature of the game states that you can do something as a bonus action. You otherwise don't have a bonus action to take.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#BonusActions
