Fr
I hope
You will I'm sure
um hi...
Hi.
@queen bane so what you need?
I don't really know the ability checks and the core rule
Calculating mods
I have trouble too
Ability checks are d20 + the relevant ability modifer + (Proficiency Bonus ONLY if you're proficient in it)
I think they mean like how much is my mod if I have like 10
Ability Scores and Modifiers
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiers
1: -5
2-3: -4
4-5: -3
6-7: -2
8-9: -1
10-11: +0
12-13: +1
14-15: +2
16-17: +3
18-19: +4
20: +5
10-11 is +0
So every 2 points above/below 10 is +/- 1
i have a question about the spell minor illusion from what i understand i can make sounds with it but i was thinking does that mean i can make like multiple instruments play at the same time using one minor illusion?
it just says sound I would rule it's up to your dm to consider the limits
i see
With DM discretion and appropriate wording .. saying something like "an orchestra" of music might work.
If I was a DM I would say it can't be random. It would need to be an arrangement you have heard or are familiar with.
I've been kind of interested in playing DND And that one time on overwatch what is the best way to find people to play with

Thanks I'll be reading that
Yeah 2 session, it was hella fun
Jealous
I finished reading it but also which one of the six sites do I make an account on
D&D Beyond, and Roll20 for starters.
Made a roll20 account
Um how many attacks can a gloom stalker do in one turn?
And how much dmg using a longbow 1d8 with +3 modifier
1d8+3
The number of attacks a gloomstalker can do will depend on if you've reached level 5 or not, but if you are level 5 or higher, then on the first turn in combat, you can do 3 attacks. Then on every turn after that, you can only do 2, like normal. They gain 1 additional attack, during the first turn of the combat only
What about gloom stalker lvl3 attacking?
then you get 2 attacks on the first turn in combat, and then 1 on every other turn. Like I said, their ability is just your normal amount +1
Like if I cast "hunters mark" on a creature, then attack it with a longbow, I would deal 2d8, extra dmg 1d8, extra dmg 2d6, +3 modifier
Is this correct??
The first attack would deal 1d8+3+1d6 damage
The second attack would deal 2d8+3+1d6 damage
with hunters mark on your first turn:
an attack that does 2d8 + 1d6
an attack that does 1d8 + 1d6
second and further:
one attack that does 1d8 + 1d6
and then all each have +3 for your modifier
On your first turn
You get plus one additional attack, which does a bonus d8 of damage.
Oof I only did 1d8 +3 1d6 on Santa clause centaur hahaha
Thank you so much @topaz garnet and @fallen surge
Some spells and special abilities confer temporary hit points to a creature. Temporary hit points aren't actual hit points; they are a buffer against damage, a pool of hit points that protect you from injury.
In video game terms, it’s like a shield health bar
I recommend playing in community campaigns as those allow people to play one shots with others in a new player friendly environment.
Plus it a great way to get to know others and create a group for a longer term campaign.
I'm new here as well so... what is a community campaign?
I'm not familiar with that term. Are you referring to the #looking-for-community channel?
Well the guy above said "play in community campaigns" so I just asked what that is, because I don't know myself
But thanks for the link to that channel, I actually needed that and didn't know it existed!
How do I go about that? I'm on a bunch of discord servers, but I'm not sure how recruiting works. I'm kind of just asking around ATM.
It depends on the community campaign.
The first is D&D Adventurers League, it is the official community campaign for Dungeons & Dragons.
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

That's not what I mean, that is likely something else.

so I seriously just do 1d4 damage at level 3? that's horrible
I thought it would be like 1d4 + dex modifier + proficiency or something, but idrk about dnd, just bg3
1d4 is what your Unarmed Strikes will do. Most monks typically use weapons, especially at early levels. When your Martial Arts dice start to become higher than what a weapon normally would be, then you can transition to unarmed only, if that is what you wish to do
Bg3 is not dnd 5e, you will still need to learn the actual rules
proficiency is not added to damage
right, which is why i said that
bg3 is quite different, but at least I know the very basics
And a monk can swing quarterstaff for d8 damage, you dont HAVE to use the martial arts die
But thats going down the rabbit hole of optimization
My husband gifted me the essentials kit since I have been wanting to learn and wanting to play. What was the YouTube channel recommended to watch? Thank you.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Very much agreed
I kinda thought monk would have really good offense, because they aren't tanky (low ac and hp) and cant really cast spells or do support stuff... so what are they good at?
To be entirely clear here, your unarmed attacks as a monk start off as dealing 1d4 damage, but you still add your Strength or Dexterity modifier (whichever is higher) to each of those damage rolls. If your Dexterity modifier is +4, that's 1d4+4 if you hit!
ohhh thank you
that helps a lot, i'm new XD
I have 18 dex, I believe
but since I'm still only level 3, I should probably use a staff or whatever monks get as a weapon, because then it'll be 1d8 or whatever +4
If you read the monk’s features you’ll see they can make an additional attack with their bonus action, two if they spend ki
Monks are decent damage dealers, but they also have a wide variety of battle field control abilities, with things like Stunning Strike. Also, they have probably the largest amount of out-of-combat features of any class in the game
And a monk's subclass can change their role in the party quite a bit. There's a lot to work with, don't you worry.
Id also say this channel is to get people started, talking about how good classes are is more for down the line and other channels
to some extent, yes. We should stop before we get into the specifics of how you build a monk character or anything like that. But if someone wants to understand more about the base playstyle of a class, that seems fitting for this channel
wdym? what sort of out-of-combat stuff do you get when you're only level 3
also, I'm planning to be way of long death, if that matters. what's everyone's favorite subclass? (if this is getting off-topic then ping me in the correct channel, wherever that is
Unarmed strikes do 1d4+(dex or str) modifier. As you level up the martial arts die increases.
Monks focus on doing multiple attacks in a single turn to do damage as opposed to dealing damage from a single attack.
At level 3 with flurry of blows you can make 3 attacks per turn as opposed to a single attack compared to other classes.
Their out-of-combat features are at higher levels.
"dex or str" I thought it was always dex
is it just whichever is higher?
I whichever is higher.
great
I choose the Eladrin race to get proficiency in long swords to help out in early game. So in a turn 1st attack can deal 1d10+ dex mod from long sword with monk martial arts. Then bonus attack unarmed strikes.
@true musk could you DM me all the monk martial weapons? (or where I'd find that list)
Longsword is not a monk weapon, so you would not be able to add +dex to attacks with it
I’m using dedicated weapon from Tasha’s to have it count as a monk weapon.
(But you can turn it into a monk weapon with the optional Dedicated Weapon feature found in the Tasha's Cauldron supplement! However, we're moving way into #optimization or #character-discussion territory!)
Ah. Optional Class Features are probably a little too advanced to discuss in the beginner channel, tbh
lmao
Monk weapons are short swords and simple weapons.
monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don’t have the two-handed or heavy property.
Jumping to #optimization 😀👍
well I'm completely new to dnd so what's a simple weapon
The weapons table is broken down into 2 categories, Simple Weapons and Martial Weapons
A simple weapon is any weapon on the Simple Weapons list
I was asking where I'd find that list :/
Here is a link to the rules on weapons:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/phb/equipment#Weapons
Everything here under simple weapons in the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#SimpleMeleeWeapons
When people say "Theatre of mind" do they just mean "Use your imagination"?
Yes.
Ok thanks!
I think fighter is good for me lol
Am simple half orc I swing weapon. I hurt people with weapon.
Is a Halbred something that requires polearms mastery?
Or is it just a martial weapon?
To use a Halberd, all you need is two hands! To use it well, you'd need proficiency in Martial Weapons.
Nice nice thankfully I believe fighter has that right?
A halberd is a martial weapon, so proficiency in martial weapons is all that's needed to use one (properly)
Polearm Mastery is a feat that makes you better at using pole arms. It give you extra combat options while using one. It is not requires to use them in the first place though
If not I can easily start out with like a great club or a Longsword. Oh good! Ty fellas!
Yes, fighters have proficiency with martial weapons, so they can use halberds from level 1
They can even pick one up as part of their starting equipment if they want.
Weapons are categorized as Simple or Martial
Class or race can give proficiency in these categories or specific weapons
I have no idea on how to play dnd dose anyone know where to start?
Usually a good idea to read the game rules... 😉
Check the pinned message for some useful links and resources including a link to the free basic rules.
Cool thanks

How does bard and wizard differ in terms of using spells? I noticed a lot of spells overlap between bard and other classes. Its my understanding that a wizard changes their spells at the start of the day from any spells they have access too up to their level and spell slot tier. How does it work for bards? Can they only pick new ones on level up or when they get another spell slot? How do bards actually cast magic like fireball compared to wizards in terms of RP flavor? It's hard to visualize what a bard is supposed to be.
I mean it's not hard to visualize what a BARD is supposed to be, but how do they cast combat magic, like are they just wizards with guitars then?
-
have you actually read the spellcasting features of each class? They describe what you are asking
-
how a character casts spells flavor wise is up to the player
Thematically, a Bard derives its power from performance, whether its music, dance, poetry, whatever. Therefore it is common to have the bard do some drmatic flair in casting its spells, although this is not required
A highly talented professional actor like Sam Riegel on Critical Role actually sang cheery takes on pop songs when he played a bard for years, but…he’s a real life bard. Nobody has to do that
Mechanically, a bard is specifically allowed to use a musical instrument as a spellcasting focus
Although again, how a focus looks mechanically has almost no effect, its flavor. Make it whatever you want
Mechanically bards use charisma, while wizards use intelligence.
Bards also have known spells, so once you choose a spell, it’s mostly permanent.
They also have quite different spell lists
Bard: As you level up you pick spells you know. Those are the only spells you'll ever know (some exceptions apply) and those are the spells you can use spell slots to cast each day. You don't prepare spells - those are your known spells and your list is more limited than that of a wizard.
Wizard: As you level up you pick spells that are available in your spellbook. You can also add spells to your spellbook in other ways (from scrolls or other spellbooks, for example). Each day you can prepare a certain number of spells from your spellbook that you can use your spell slots to cast. On a given day you could pick a different assortment of spells to prepare based on what you anticipate that you might be doing. In this way, the wizard has more flexible spellcasting than a bard does.
Im not getting this too well.......someone help
What part of it aren’t you getting?
Ugh. Figuring out where to get into adventure league is hard. You Google that and a bazillion things come up.
The folks in #adventurers-league can help with that.
Our general starting advice would be to only read the rules in #al-news-updates as Google will get you a wide variety of rules going back years that may not be valid anymore.

I have a question if I have a creature thats usually not in most dnd games thing I have a idea for one can I still use it as a character
This is something you have to ask your DM.
If you're new to D&D I recommend you stick with the published playable races.
Oh ok thanks
Sorry, I went shopping. Let me know if you're still free. If you want to DM that would be easier for me in case I forget anything. That way I can just back scroll if I forget something.
can you use ki points to get an extra action?
can i use other ki point to make patient defense or step of the wind after taking the flurry of blows bonus action?
Ki points don't give you extra actions or bonus actions
If you use your bonus action for flurry of blows, you can't then use it again for patient defense
so you can use ki points for bonus action once on your turn? so a level 8th monk does only have 2 actions and a bonus action (if he uses ki points)?
i mean in those cases of flurry of blows, patient defense and step of the wind
only attack?
I mean if you punch you can punch again as bonus action
I've been trolled by my players this whole time (im a new DM)
Just got home so I can hop on a voice call if you still want.
Ok one more question ik this is like a very big thing everyone shold know that plays dnd what are like the different classes (friend that play dnd got me a starter set and I'm to lazy rn to read though it fully and get to that part and I only know about rouge a little) (I just realized how dumb i sound)
#looking-for-community Trying to help my son (I’m a total newb). He would like to find an online group to play with.
You can only take one bonus action on your turn, regardless of whether ki is involved.
thnks
tyyyy!
Yes, extra attack only applies to the attack action, which is the use of a weapon (fists count)
I would recommend visiting local game shops as some host dnd sessions.
... impressive
He’s in one weekly but we have limited kids his age to play in our area. Any recommendations to find age appropriate groups for a pre teen?
Hmm 🤔 let me see if I can find something.
Peril in Pinebrook is a free adventure for young players
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
If you want to play in person I would recommend to find kids your son's age to set up their own group.
I started playing D&D when I was 11 or 12 (back in the early 80s, so think season 1 of Stranger Things) so it's not unthinkable of having preteens playing D&D.
Do you want in person or on call or are you ok with both? /gq
Thank you !! I’ll check that out.
Online would be most functional for us if possible
Online may be an obstacle because adults may not want to play with minors for various reasons.
And besides, you have to be 13 to use discord and servers can be shut down if there's people below that there
Perhaps you (the parent) can DM your son and his friends.
Sure I'm here
Can I do that through zoom or something? I’m worried about a public group but I would be in the same room while he plays in case
Oh, good to know. thank!
Whatever works with you.
You may want to use a virtual tabletop (VTT) for battlemaps.
Sure, you can play D&D through pretty much anything that gives you a voice connection. Or if you want a map, Roll20 offers voice options with their virtual tabletop.
Looks like I have a rabbit hole of learning to do this week!
Huge kudos to you for doing all of this!
For parents the recommendation would be to check the school, local libraries, and game shops as those can have dnd events for kids. As well as attend conventions that host dnd events. That way you can also meet other parents and coordinate with them.
I’ll delve into that a bit more. We’re finding limited interest locally so far but I’ll try.
Alright sending you a direct message.
I didn't get it for some reason
did you get my new message?
In the meantime here is a free dnd adventure that dnd beyond is giving away until New Years: https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/source/spelljammer-academy?icid_source=house-ads&icid_medium=crosspromo&icid_campaign=advcal2023
It's a beginner friendly adventure that be able to teach you the basics of dnd.
Eh... that's awfully niche
I had already mentioned Peril in Pinebrook as a free adventure for new young players:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
Couldn't hurt to have more than one adventure.
@trail cliff each day clerics prepare a number of levelled spells they can cast that day equal to their level + their wisdom modifier
So a level 1 cleric with +3 wisdom can prepare 4 spells each day
And those spells must be a level they have slots for
thank you so much :D
Hello, I've been thinking about trying D&D but I don't really know how to start
To help explain more wholly:
You have some cantrips. You can cast those infinitely.
Then we get to spells of 1st level and higher, colloquially called levelled spells. For now we'll just differentiate via Cantrip and Spell.
You have two 1st level spell slots at 1st level.
But, a 1st level cleric can prepare an amount of spells equal to their level (1) + their wisdom modifier.
Yes, you have more spells prepared than slots to cast each with, but it's options.

Being into fantasy roleplay servers and having a growing liking for baldur’s gate 3 made me wanna start playing dnd myself.
I played one irl game with friends for a one shot starting and ending at level 7 I think I did well for a newbie who uses the dnd side of YouTube for guidance and it being my first real dnd experience.
But im still new, especially to magic and remembering my abilities, dice I use, and certain abilities and scenarios (such as what is considered advantage for back stab.
So, in short, I used to be a total newbie, now I’m a novice newbie, guess this is me explaining my progress with learning such a different game from my usual card games or fps games
One thing’s for certain, BG3 does a good job of teaching basics, just compared to table games, nothing is automatically done.
Welp, there is my rambling about my first table game (no detail or stories), and my progression from total to not as much newbie
Hello. DnD was always something I was interested in playing but never had an opportunity to. I am a complete newcomer and what drove me to finally take the plunge here was BG3 which is probably one of my new all time favorite games. I understand that real DnD is even more fun than that so I'm hoping for a chance to actually try this game out and have some fun and tell compelling stories
Welcome
So, hello. For all intents and purposes, I'm new to DnD; last game I played was in a play-by-post message board roughly 17 years ago. But I'm hoping to get back in the saddle, learn a few new systems, and try some of the character concepts I've cooked up.
lol lots of new faces coming out to speak up here
If you played that long ago, then you actually would have been playing a different edition of D&D. The current version, 5e, came out in 2014. So, assuming you want to play the current version, just keep in mind that things won’t quite match what you remember
It’s always a treat to see veterans get back into the game and learn about 5e though. I love seeing the different perspectives of past and present
It's hard for me to focus on the nitty gritty details of this game. I work best as I go along and figure things out. Like I've been looking through the rules book that came in my Essentials kit and there's a LOT for me to remember
Yep. My first exposure to the D20 system of combat was from KOTOR back in the day, so my understanding was built upon that. While I have taken a cursory look at the PHB, I've never actually put it into practice. I'm familiar most with point-buy stats.
Point buy is still standard practice for making character stats, though I can’t say if the exact values and point budget are the same or not
Or, it’s at least one of the standards
Most of my sheets now are based on an array at 6th Level, with all sources except UA
The rules will definitely seem overwhelming at first, but you don’t have to memorize everything. I’ve been playing for 5 years at this point, and I still look things up while playing from time to time. The rules are reference material. You don’t have to lock the books away when you start
Yeah probably won't anytime soon for sure. I suppose my first real dnd experience comes from BG3. I love that game and wanna play the actual game it's based on. I also saw the movie back in June but I'm not sure that counts. Fun movie
Some people seem to think listening to podcasts count, so why not the movie too :)
Oh! Then I guess the movie was my first dnd experience in that case
The movie was very fun, yeah. But that was just a standard adventure story, set in the same world as the D&D games. Nothing in it really reflected or focused on the D&D rules.
I'd still say it counts as an experience
My brother said something similar and he actively plays the game
BG3 is much closer to normal D&D play, but they made quite a few changes to make it work better as a video game. It should still give you a very solid base for getting started though
Yeah. I adore the game one of my favorites now and I haven't even finished. Made me really itch to play the real thing. I made up a character through Beyond. I'm quite happy with him and wanna start using him as soon as I get my bearings
I haven't played bg3 but yeah hearing about it so much and listening to podcasts for fun made me take the step to joining this server too
Well, when you feel ready, you can go to #looking-for-players and read through the posts there, to see if any interest you. Or, you can use the server bot to make a post in #750812887697588356 to advertise yourself, so that potential DMs might reach out to you. #find-a-game has detailed instructions on how to do that. Scroll to the top of that channel and give it a read through when you feel ready
Alright these look good. I appreciate it. I might head to the character creation with what I have to see if I need to iron anything out with my character
Yep, that’s always good too
Thanks for welcoming me in. I'm excited to try this out

Hello
Hi I'm Peck. Haven't played a legit game of D&D before, and I really like BG3. I live in a town where nobody plays and I would love to learn
Welcome both!

@urban ferry Hey we should learn toghther
I do have a question.
What if I want my character to be a fox?
Use something approximate enough. Tabaxi should work fine.
You could go with homebrew (an unofficial race that a fan of DnD has created) but that's prolly not advisable for a newcomer. It's advisable to use the stats of an official race or just use an official race. Remember that you can make hundreds of DnD characters. So start with something with simpler and then move to more complex when you have some experience.
You could go with homebrew (an unofficial race that a fan of DnD has created)
Isn't that just custom lineage?
There are a lot of interesting official races anyway. Choices are plenty. Anything from fuzzy bunnies to quirky automatons.
I forget that custom lineage is a thing. Personally I'm not a big fan of it 'cause it makes a race feel less special and unique. Then again I'm also not fond of homebrew races so...
I'd recommend picking the tabaxi race and just flavor them as a fox.
Or custom lineage if you want your character to stand out from tabaxi (cat people).
Hello, I’m new here. Is this the right place to be?
It is!
Alright thanks!
So, what do I do now? Do I introduce myself or go to a separate room?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
This is where folks come to get info about the basics of the game, which are largely covered by the links above. If you have clarifying questions, this is a good spot for them. Otherwise, post in the appropriate channel depending on the topic/question you have in mind!
Alright
I have a few questions then: (also sorry if I’m awkward or anything I have a bad time reading people’s emotions or intent from text)
Go for it.
-
How should I start playing DND, as a person who’s new to the game?
-
Can I play with people in this server, or do I need to arrange for meetings outside of it?
-
I'm not sure what you're asking here. Some folks organize a group among friends and learn the rules as they go. Some learn the rules before trying to find a game with strangers. Some drop in to their local library or game/comic shop to try out a session. It depends on what's available to you.
-
There are no games hosted on this server. We do have channels to facilitate players getting together (see #find-a-game for all the details), but they would need to host the games elsewhere.
This would be a good place to start.
Ok. Thanks!
And thanks @harsh fjord
Sure thing. This channel is a good place to ask questions as you get yourself situated, though you may get directed to other channels as more appropriate, depending on the nature of the question.
Ok I have another one
I don’t know if it’s a dumb question but:
When choosing a race for your character, does it have to be one that DnD provides?
Or can it be anything as long as I describe its features?
That's up to the DM. Some allow homebrew (fan-made content), but others don't. Some are fine with you choosing an official race with all the built-in features but describing it however you like.
I would recommend against homebrew as a new player. Get used to the official options before making up something else (or picking something from the wilds of the Internet).
Absolutely not
Pick an existing official race
👍🏽
You have no way of identifying bad homebrew
Good point
Hey when makeing a character sheet what is the number under your the stats
It is unlikely there is no existing option that cant simply be reflavored to suit your needs
Ok
I would guess you mean your modifier.
Your ability scores and underneath the ability modifier
I have a question relevant to this: How far into my dnd playing career should I be before trying out homebrew? Like is there a recommended amount of campaigns to finish by your guys opinions?
I'd say until you're comfortable
homebrew what?
Homebrew campaign settings are common
Homebrew mechanics…not until you have a good grasp of the official rules
I think he means like weapons and races
And also it is DM dependent
Is there a race that isn’t humanoid?
Homebrew anything, but yeah mainly campaigns
Kobold
I don't think it's a matter of campaigns but just general play experience. I don't think there's a set number. But at two years in of nearly weekly play, I can identify bad homebrew, so I know I'm fairly knowledgeable at this point. Not as much as some, but enough.
You cant pick a random homebrew and expect your DM to accept it
There’s a few Fey.
Yeah I'd love to try out DMing and homebrewing a campaign eventually
Just be a redcap
Fey or kobold sounds nice
Homebrewing a campaign (as in a narrative) is one thing. Homebrewing mechanics is quite another.
Or redcap (mushrooms right?)
Well kobolds are like little alligators
There are two
One that looks like a garden gnome
I like it but I don’t think it fits with the character I’m thinking of. I’ll definitely use it again though
And the other is just a shroom
I think the shroom would work.
The character I was thinking of was a traveler
There is no official race called redcap.
Redcaps aren't an official race.
Can you be just any race or is that up to the DM
Up to the DM.
Figured ya
Some don't even allow all official options, depending on the setting/vibe/theme/etc.
But for other non-humanoids: Thri-kreen are monstrosities. Plasmoids are oozes.
The redcap is an official creature that you can find on your adventures though.
I should specify that redcaps are not playable lol and are monsters lol
Maybe a gnome that has a pet shroom or something?
I tend to to think of hombrewing a campaign as modifying a computer or a car. Until you have a solid understanding of how something works, modifying it could result in outcomes you weren't expecting.
Autognomes are constructs.
But you can't play as a redcap. You'd have to dip your toes into homebrew.
Gnomes are good
Can be a druid so you have some connection to nature
Thri Kreen looks amazing too though
That's a very fair way of seeing it!
Redcaps are just serial murderers right?
Isn’t that where the word redcapping comes from?
Are the gnomes biological or are they more like clay things that come to life?
These are like short elves think Keebler elves
gnomes come from dwarves right?
The official materials already provide a customizable “blank slate” called Custom Lineage that you can reflavor how you like
Not serial, just bloodthirsty maniacs
It can be small or medium
Ok
Man a garden gnome coming to life would be a fun character
It can look however you want
So gnomes are Pygmy dwarves
Its just a statblock you start with
On it
Maybe the gnomes are created by the dwarves
oh yeah, they just stay in their swamp or bog and kill travelers right?
Almost like golems
Like security guards
ok
Yeah they just kill anyone who goes on their turf
how rude
Seems pretty reasonable tbh
Insatiable bloodlust does that to em
get off me property!
they take it to another level
Why do I imagine them speaking in southern accents lol
They are from Louisiana
I imagine they live in whatever miserable place they can find
Temperate climate is their preferred area
So you won't encounter them in the cold mountains
Dang so not where my gnome would be found
At this point the discussion has drifted from the channel's focus.
Recommendation to build up towards going homebrew, either campaign or mechanics wise is to run and test out as much of the official content that is out there.
This will help you avoid from creating something that already exists and have a baseline to build from when homebrew is used.
If you want to brainstorm character ideas, head to #character-discussion!
Sorry but thanks
All good!
Hi, I am completely new here pleasure to meet my favorite class is what sciences would call the common nominator Human fighter.
Welcome. If you have any questions feel free to ask. This channel is here to help out new players.
@lapis coyote
Spellcasting is simple for Ranger.
They're half-casters, and most of their spells focus on crowd control and mobility. In a nutshell, they dip in nature magic.
Also, because rangers are half-casters, they get leveled spell slots at a slower rate.
This is good for newbies since it's less spells to think about.
Great because that's a big concern of mine haha, remembering all my spells
For choosing my first spells when I reach lvl 2, any recommendations?
An important note for spellcasters
Your character level is not the level of spells available to you
Being a level 5 cleric does not give you access to 5th level cleric spells
Spell level is entirely separate from character level
I know nothing haha
being a level 5 cleric will give you the array of spell slots available to a 5th level cleric, yeah
Hunter's Mark and Cure Wounds, both are extremely simple spells.
It doesn't give you 5th level spell slots though, this isn't the channel to condescendingly talk to people as if this stuff is all obvious like you were doing in #dnd-discussion .
I was actually thinking I wouldn't choose cure wounds, but if it's recommended for beginners then I'll try
My PC lived alone for a long time so I guess knowing how to heal one self would be ideal for a hunter
"It doesn't give you 5th level spell slots though"
you think I said something to the contrary?
If you want to, you could choose Longstrider.
It's just as simple.
Of the two I prefer cure wounds then, but thanks for the suggestion!
Do you know what other classes the people you'll be playing with are going to be?
Longstrider gives 10 ft. of increased movement speed for an hour to anyone you cast the spell on, no concentration.
I have no clue no since I haven't found a group to play with
I'll finish my character fully on dndbeyond before looking for a dm
How can you find the perfect class
The perfect class is the class that fits your preferred playstyle the most
Thanks
There is no wrong class or any bad classes, every class can be very fun and effective
hii
Hello
Hi!
Just one more suggestion:
Speak with Animals.
It's basically a spell for roleplay purposes, but has the "Ritual" tag.
Basically, Rituals can be cast without spell slots as long as you spend an extra 10 minutes casting the spell.
this is where like i can learn more about dnd right
Does what it says in the tin, you can Speak with Animals. :3
And if your class's spellcasting feature says you can cast spells as rituals
Some classes can't, such as Sorcerer, and Ranger also can't
Yes! I'm learning right now!
Or do an epic gamer move like me and get the Eldritch Adept feat and go with the Beast Speech invocation. Infinite animals to talk with.
This is the channel for new people, yes. If you wanna find people to play with though then #find-a-game is the channel to go, but this is definitely a good channel for asking questions.
Man i still haven't even started LOOKING at feats
My mistake.
oh alr nice cool
It's ok. One thing at a time. I am just really proud of my druid that has an infinite use of the spell speak with animals.
I still think Speak With Animals is nice for roleplay purposes.
I hope I'm not overloading you with information.
You're not, don't worry! I'm enjoying this
And I'm learning tons too
It def is. My druid is always talking to her pet.
If a spell says cast on object of a certain weight could that also be applied to a player?
creatures /=/ objects (and vice versa)
Are you objectifying players???? Jk
Objects and creatures are seperate in terms of rules.
so how does combat work
You should prolly read the basic rules
Can I sidestep that by casting on the clothing the persons wearing?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat is most of how things work
spells that target creatures target creatures
spells that target objects target objects
And most object-targeting is for ones not worn or carried
Shoes are objects
What is the spell you're trying to get to work?
Just defining limits of abilities like I'd I cast light on a halflings clothing because they are under 10 ft
of what?
Stuff like Light that can cause an object to shed light can work on carried objects, like you could cast it on a sword or a stick they're carrying
Also, the Light cantrip has a specific interaction for putting it on someone
"If you target an object held or worn by a hostile creature, that creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw to avoid the spell."
If they're a willing creature then it likely just happens
Like another party member
That's what I'm wondering because casting it on a halflings outfit would basically be a portable lantern
1: It doesn't specify not worn or carried, you can light something like a friend's sword fine
2: only if an object is held/worn by a hostile does it have a chance to not work
or yourself, for example
on your halfling friend, lit clothes is fine
Still worth asking if they're confused by it or unsure
Better to ask questions and get things right than guess and get them wrong and upset people at the table
🥜 IN A NUTSHELL 🥜
- You roll initiative, which determines turn order.
- You have actions, bonus actions, and reactions to use during a turn.
Actions are your main thing, mostly everything is done via Actions, such as attacking.
Bonus Actions are an extra thing. You cannot use a bonus action unless you have features or spells that require a bonus action.
Reactions can be used anytime, during other creatures' turns, and only once per round. This is only if a feature or spell's reaction condition is fulfilled.
Yep
Things do as they say, so for Light
You can target any object in range
If that object happens to be held/worn by a hostile creature, then that creature can make a dex save to avoid being lit up
Saying "Things do as they say" is such a non answer, there are a lot of instances in D&D where the wordings of things can be unclear especially to new players.
The game is a lot to get into for new people.
It's a multi step process
the first is what does it say
the second is, feel free to ask for any clarification thereof
Which people are doing in this channel, as it is the #dnd-newcomers channel, so telling them that spells do what they say isn't helpful at all and can just make them feel bad or dumb for having asked to begin with.
Just help people or don't, there's no need to be snarky when doing so.
What's with the adversarial attitude?
Being like "Yeah, things do as they say" is not helpful and is condescending, and when we're dealing with people who are new to the game, especially a game like D&D where it can be daunting to get into and is a game where you need other people to play with, we shouldn't be coming across so unwelcoming.
How is “Things do as they say” condescending
...I would not start accusing people of being condescending.
It's about being sure about what things say
Things only do as they say. So don't rush, and you'll know exactly what they mean to do.
Not helpful? I can understand. Condescending? I think we're just making assumptions here.
Sometimes, some things can be somewhat convoluted, or need contextual explanation, which is more fitting for questions
but when it comes to the absolute fundamentals, often the most fitting answer is simply the relevant description of the rule.
@indigo token @lapis coyote How are y'all doin'? Any questions?
I hope you don't mind me pinging you.
Don't mind at all bud, and thanks for asking :)
I'll have more questions once I get the player handbook on beyond
Don't wanna finish my character without
The basic rules is all the fundamental rules
the PHB will just give some optionals/variants, as well as more spells and subclasses
Have you checked out the Basic Rules?
It has all class information plus a single subclass for character-building.
Same brain lmao
Yeah I have! I mean more like, I wanna fill out Outlander as my background, but to do that I need the PHB
How do you use the looking for dm bot
Excellent.
for #find-a-game ?
You'd use the /looking-for-DM command and it'll present a form for you to fill out, then the bot will post your form in the corresponding channel
Outlander is the background for beginner Rangers for obvious reasons.
They've learned all there is to know about survival and tracking. 🐾
Could be a scout, scavenger, or another profession requiring wilderness exploration. 🍃
I feel so validated rn hahahaha
To me an outlander is a person who lived off the land. Like a hunter living outside of a town or a nomad who rarely visits towns or cities.
Yes that is my idea, and I'm choosing the tribe thing for bonds
"I am the last of my tribe, and it is up to me to ensure their names enter legend."
Some backgrounds fit classes like a glove, such as Entertainer for Bard; Criminal for Rogue; or in your case, Outlander for Ranger.
Others can inspire stories that feel more personal to you
There's a tribe member background though if you're the last one of your tribe it won't be of much use to you.
Outlander fits my idea perfectly
Funny potions and brews? :3
I'm very excited to try out the "Violence is my answer to almost any challenge." Flaw haha
Violence isn't the answer.
It's a question, and you say yes.
Personality trait:
"I know the wild, I'll eat anything I get my hands on. >:) "
(I kid, it's your character.)
Haha don't worry I know :)
Ranger: I found berries!
Druid: Umm, I think those are poisonous.
Ranger: They're definitely fine!
Druid:
Ranger: Maybe not.
Druid: Sigh. Casts lesser restoration.
Hello guys! Can someone tell me what preperations I should make before my first d&d game? I have no clue about anything yet...
Read the Basic Rules.
Learn your character's abilities and spells (if any).
Learn the rules of combat.
Have a character sheet.
What should I prepare as a dungeon master
Thanks! I will get on it
Ask in #dm-discussion for DMing advice.
Okk
HIYA! im new and just wanted to say wassup☺️
also are there any recommendations on how to determine the ability scores? or should i ask the dm for that?
Hey Rileey!
The DM decides how they're determined, yes
ty!
point buy is pretty safe tho
Usually point buy is a valid option though
most tables allow it
The method will be determined by your Dm
For practice, stick to pointbuy or standard array
same with standard array
the three base methods
your DM might do a different method than listed but using Standard Array or customizing the scores via the point-buying thing is a safe bet.
i've been working on characters for a while just so that i knew what it meant to be a pc, but im still a newbie when it comes to actually playing: any advice on finding a group?
Online or in person
Hi!
online
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
but check other sites as well
thank you!☺️
Hi I'm like a complete noob I'd like to learn the game more I have only played 2 games in the past at birthdays and I am now interested can anyone help me
What are you having trouble with? You read the free Basic rules aleady?
so i bought one of those essentials packs and im not really sure where to go from here and how to get started. do i absolutely need a dm? or can i do it by myself
if you could dm me it would be appreciated
Yes, you need someone to be a DM and at least one player.
D&D is a group collaborative game and not made for solo play.
Fighters that duel weld should roll for each weapon?
Yes.
Oops I’ve been naughty lol
So I should roll twice for main & off hand weapon. Once I unlock attack twice I can add only a simple extra hit?
Main
Off hand (bonus)
Main
Is that right?
there's no 'off hand', it's just two-weapon fighting's bonus attack
But yes, two main attacks and one bonus.
🙈 ok that changes how I’ll play now then. Thanks.
The martial adept feat gives u a superior die, can you get more then one?
Best way is to find a game
No.
Well there are Dragonborn but no one would screw a dragon 😆
🤣
Dragonborns aren't descended from dragons.
It’s fantasy where did dwarfs, elf’s, giants etc come from…don’t open that book
Dude, watch where you're going with this. This is a PG-server.
your DM is probably not trying to slaughter you. Just learn how your character functions, what they are good at etc
well this advice still stands once you do have a DM
Once you have a DM they can guide you better. For now ask questions about ur hero not where Dragonborn came from 😉
You picked a paladin
What race u pick?
So you will fight for a religion normally, welding magic and weapons
Yeah
Can a fallen assimar be a cleric?

these links give you all the info you need to get started
sure
You simple pick one
see chapter 2 of the basic rules
DnD beyond will have a lot of info to get started
Go to DND BEYOND website they have basic info to help create characters 👍
you dont strictly need physical items to play, especially for online play
though at a IRL table, you might be expected to have real dice
Smite.
Mostly I have seen a paladin smash and heal hero’s
But never played as one
Haha, they have a divine power so can do some serious damage
Start easy do you want weapons or magic?
Ok so look at barbarian or fighter in time you can add magic to them depending on the path you take
Ok so you have a blend on warrior & magic. It’s devine magic so from a ‘god’ not arcane like a sorcerer
Take a look at that link above to give you more info on character building. You can ask any questions here though
Well, more so just from their oath. Paladin is extremely easy to be religious with though.
I was close lol
You can literally just get the powers from swearing revenge
Is that more warlock type powers then paladin?
no, warlock is a pact with an otherworldly entity granting power and eldritch secrets
hello wich channel should i use to ask questions about carachter creation i am new to this and was hoping to get some help from someone who understands it a bit better
ok nice thanks i just recently started playing dnd with some friends who have been doing it for a while. ive got a grasps on the basics and have played a few times but now they want to do some kind of battle royale since one person cant make it the next time. so they've been playing for a while and have pretty good ideas how to make characters good for this but ive really got no clue. i dont think ill be able to win but i had this funny idea so that i could mayby at least stay in the game for awhile before i die. what im wondering how can i make a carachter with the most possible ac at lvl10?
I need help 🙂 i am using a custom Character sheet but there is a single box i dont understand for what its used. but i cant upload a picture on here :/ (DMG Barbarian Class Sheet)
Can you explain what the box is?
Is it Inspiration? If so, that's for a DM to assign, if at all, so don't worry about it.
Its at the top right corner right under the Barbarian name Tag. Next to the Subclass. I think it has to be my current level.
All the others have names. So there arent confusions there
does it say 'level'?
nah just a blank space. But profiency and inspiratio and all that is named
and a small space, i guess it fits a 2 digit number
yea
A little circle directly below a two-bladed axe, to the left of a rectangle with "PRIMAL PATH" below it
that'd be your level
ahh perfect thx
I can only assume that it's the DMs Guild class sheet for barbarian
yea they look much cooler and have more explanations than the basic ones 🙂
It’s not always about AC, monks and rogue have the ability to evade attacks, others do to but those pair stick out to me
Going straight in with a lv10 character you will want to speak with ur DM, to figure out how extra gear you can have rather then starting with just basic stuff.
The one who stands before the storm.
I’m not sure what you mean by that question. What your character looks like is largely just up to you. It obviously depends on what race you pick, and that kinda thing
Your character, you pick.
Stereotypically, a Paladin in the “knight in shining armor” character archetype, so they typically wear heavy plate armor that’s very well polished and adorned with ceremonial symbols and trimmings
I have never played Elden Ring, so I don’t get the reference, but by name alone that certainly sounds right
The character is yours to do with as you wish but start simple and as you play you develop your own style
so like if the dm chooses your items by rollin or js by choice how would u build a charecter u like
is it still js set on luck or is their a way to get items?
D&D is a collaborative storytelling RPG so the best thing to do is communicate with the DM and group. Even if the DM starts you all off with preset items, it's okay to talk with the DM about how to get new items.
oh okay thank you
Typically speaking, the dm chooses magic items by rolling on a table. All the non magical equipment you will need to get started is part of your starting equipment that you automatically get for free at level one.
good and yourself?
Trying to figure out which style I prefer my tiefling
I drew him in two different styles and can't figure out which is better
I have a D&D session coming up tomorrow and I haven't been wanting a while so I'm putting together a character hooray
oh thats super cool i wish i had the ability to put my charecter into a drawing
I can post it if you wanna see
id love to
I've finally tried dnd after a number of year's of politely declining and it's been a very negative experience so far with and I'm not exactly sure if its the norm so before dropping dnd all together I'm here to ask.
I've been berated fairly heavily over my limited knowledge of the games mechanics even though everyone's well are of the fact I came with little knowledge role playing experiences all together
well everyone likes different things and the goal of dnd is to have fun
its kind of like dating where you need to find the right group and from what im hearing your group isnt very accepting
Sorry that happened to you Lore that is absolutely NOT okay that u were treated like that and not representative of the dnd experience
Sounds like a not so great player group :( I'm sorry you had to put up with that
That's not cool. Sorry buddy.
The dungeon master is only one who's been constantly nice to me everyone else picks on me for being shy both in out of game and having a difficult time engaging in role play. I really like the dungeon master but I'm on the verge of just leaving and apologizing.
I'd first reach out to the DM about the rest of the players' attitudes. If nothing changes, then it's time to politely back out.
You do what's right for you, but if you want some advice, we've got plenty.
Thank you I really appreciate that
Could you tell us what class and level your character is?
A level 2 wizard
Wizards, generally, want to stay at the back and lay down the smack. If you can't stay convincingly away from the enemies try to stay close to your fighters.
Thats unfortunate and sucks and not a total representation of the hobby
Don't give up just find a better table
Ask your party who to target with your spells. They all want to win, so they should help. Do spend some time revising what you've got though. Different spells may be more appropriate than others.
(also Wizards are hard as a first character, I would recommend starting off with a non-caster or half caster is you don't know much about the game. But anyhow, the other players should help you learn the game, their behaviour is unacceptable)
As to the role-playing, you don't need a voice, or a dialect coach. It's okay to describe how your character is acting and even talking. You don't do a deadlift when you test your Strength, you don't need to be Romeo to say "Tharandil will spend some time chatting up the barmaid."
Last quick tip: look up images of "DND character sheet explained". That'll help you understand where to find your numbers.
Hi all, looking for newbie advise. I have played gloomhaven and hero quest as well as a variety of other D&D style games. Can anyone suggest how I get into joining a D&D group. Would you suggest online such as roll20 or in person. Not sure how to start out? Any advice. I'm based in the UK
I'd recommend checking out the free basic rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules), learn how to create a character sheet (see info in the pinned messages here and again refer to the free basic rules), learn the core mechanics of how to make a skill check roll, a saving throw roll, and an attack roll (see info in pinned messages here in the channel). Then go find a group to play with!
Either try comic or hobby s
How are you feeling now, @slender dew ? Think you might give it another go?
I'm on the phone with them dm
He says he's looking for a better group for us.
Appreciate it. It's tough to figure out where to start. I love watching the D20 drop out campaigns so would love to give it a go
Oh definitely see how others play D&D but remember that most liveplays/streams are for entertainment first and less about "how to play D&D".
Good on ya!
"Session 0" is an out of game discussion about the rules and expectations for the upcoming campaign, so don't expect to start playing the actual game during this session
I mean I know that much
Ok, just making sure. Some people think of session 0 as a prequel adventure
Think about what you want from the game, even if those are tentative ideas. What things appeal to you. Be prepared to participate!
It’s very much a conversation. Hold up your half.
Yeah I just don't know what I should bring up
When I prepare for session 0 as a player, what I like to do is make a list of things that I (as a player) want and don't want out of the campaign, as well as a list of things that my character wants and doesn't want out of the adventure
Ohh alright that sounds smart
Hard lines of content you don’t want to engage with, what things you like/don’t like as a player, character ideas. Those are a start.
I ask these questions during a session 0.
- How long does everyone want to commit to the campaign? (3 months, 6 months, 1 year, possibly longer?)
- How often do people want to meet? Weekly, bi-weekly, monthly?
- Session length? 2 hours, 3 hours, something else?
- How many players are needed at minimum for a session to be guaranteed?
- If not enough players show up, what can we play so those who are able to make it can still have fun?
Just looking over a session zero guide can give you some ideas for what topics might be covered (and stuff that isn’t on there may give you ideas too).
I have zero idea how to play DND what do I do
you can read the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules and run a premade adventure: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
OKOK thanks!!!

There's only one "no compromise" rule for me as a player when I start looking for a group: no PvP. As a veteran of MMO PvP and FPS multiplayer, I know that I'm an extremely sore loser.
God same
The game isnt designed for it
It can be toxic
It can also be narratively appropriate depending on context
it can be good if it's handled well and it can be bad when it's handled poorly (like anything else), so I don't understand the backlash for it
A problem player will most certainly abuse it
A group thats got good chemistry can do in an appropriate manner. CR has several examples
The stigma around PvP in D&D comes from 2 main things:
- The game is not remotely balanced around it. If two players fight, it will not be an even or fair fight.
- D&D is meant to be a team game, and working against your team is not an enjoyable experience for everyone involved, most of the time
I wasn't referring to combat and you can work for the party while having a fun rivalry
then point 2 still applies
of course if someone handles something poorly the results will be negative
Yes
So I bought a Starter set dragons of stormereck isle and do I have to follow it or can I make my own Story?
Or do I take the rules and apply them to my own game
If you are new to the game it’s recommended to run a pre-written adventure as is due to DMing requiring quite a bit to keep track of.
You have the option to do either
As DM, you can veer off course from the prewritten adventure as much as you want but that means more work for you.
Would a Druid/Bard work well?
As a multiclass you mean? That's probably a question you should ask in #character-discussion or #optimization
Are humanoid chimera playable?
"Chimera" is not one of the options for a playable race, but if you wanted to choose one of the normal playable races are keep its rules and mechanics the same, some DMs might allow you to change its appearance and flavor to be chimera-esc
Simic?
Actually, I take that back. Simic Hybrid might be exactly what you are looking for
beat me to it lol
Simic Hybrids are a race from Ravnica (A Magic the Gathering setting) that imbues animal traits into humanoids through experimentation and mutation. They perfectly match what would be considered a chimera. However, since this race is from a non-standard setting, just make sure you have your DM's approval before using it in a game. Some DMs may say that this race doesn't exist in their world
Yeah, what Colossus said. I probably wouldn't have them without some good backstory - and I rate quality, not quantity.
Hey can someone explain how leveling works in dnd
You level up when you either:
- have enough XP to go to the next level
- with the Milestone method, the DM tells you that you levelled up.
(the DM decides at the beginning which method)
Is there a generally preferred way of the two?
There are 2 methods of leveling up: XP or Milestone
XP is pretty self explanitory. As you defeat monsters or overcome challenges, your DM will award you XP, and when you gain enough XP, you level up
Milestone is more freeform. When you reach a certain part in the story of your adventure, or overcome a particularly challenging trial, then your DM will simply award you a level up. This method is is completely at their decision
DM's choice. I prefer Milestone because it's less accounting.
Yeah me too
Milestone seems to have become more popular, based on the conversations I've had online and what I've seen on youtube and twitch, but obviously that can't account for all the people playing at home. So, its hard to say if one is more popular than the other. They both still exist to enough degree that its important to know how they both work
I assume Milestones are more up to the DMs discretion?
Like something planned before hand
Milestone is 100% up to the DM. They decide when during the adventure/campaign the PCs will level up.
Im soon hoasting a campaign, and im probably using milestones
Just up my alley heck yeah
Is it possible to play d&d with mobile device.... my pc died yesterday 😢
Sure! Just gotta decide if it's vc or pbp and you're good to go
What is vc and pbp
It might be difficult to use a VTT like roll 20 on your phone, but it should still be possible. The DDB app makes it very easy to access your character sheet and roll digital dice from there though
VC = voice chat
PBP = Play By Post
Play By Post is text based D&D
Play by post is probably easiest without a VTT like Colossus mentioned
VTT = Virtual Tabletop. An online representation of a battle map
I'm gonna need some help with this.
Is there anyone willing g to play a very casual game with me? Using the phone
You'd need to make a post in #750812887697588356 or #looking-for-players so try reading through #find-a-game
I remember playing d&d by mail

A long time ago
Play by email used to be a big thing, along with play by post on forums.
I'd definitely do a play by email just to try, sounds very beginner friendly
It'd been mostly replaced now by play by post on forums or Discord.
Back in 2000 you could play in chat applets
Yeah I assumed as much and is what I'll aim for when eventually playing
If im not mistaken
There is a play by post mail ... but ... it is pay to play by turn.
I guess, then, since Discord was mentioned, how would someone play using discord?
You communicate via text/voice on Discord.
Well if I were to do it, I'd make a server and set up some bots to help out if it was pbp
If vc then just make a group chat
What about maps and how would someone handle combat
Theatre of the mind or a VTT
Pretty new to DND but I’ve heard a lot about it and wanted to try it
Well since I don't have a pc anymore... I kinda don't have a choice
D&D is a great addiction to add to ones collection.
I have nearly every book
There’s books?
nearly every book of what edition?
Awesome
Welcome to the dark side. We have dragons, and we might have cookies around here somewhere.
My collection is vast
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Thanks Dyno... I will get to that later.
Sure no rush
Ima read a bunch of that stuff so I get the jist of it
If you get bored of reading, the Handbook Helper video series linked above is a wonderful way to learn as well!
My favorite edition is 3.5.
I also loved to play the scenarios and episodic stories from the magazienes.
Thank you!
I think 2 of the magazines are defunct now
#dnd-elder-editions is the channel you hang out in to talk about older editions with us older gamers!
Let's keep things on topic, this channel is for covering the basics of D&D fifth edition and helping newcomers get started with it
If anyone wants to discuss prior editions and content, please use #dnd-elder-editions
I'm collecting now YIPEE
Does anyone have a party I can join? I’m a level 1 Eladrin Elf paladin. And also can someone explain to me how hit points and how the dice work. Just message me, thanks
Hit dice (1dx at level one) are used during a short rest. You can roll as many as you want from how many you have, only one to start with, and gain that many hit points back.
Hoi new to DnD and new to DMing for my smol 3 player group. Reading through the handbook but it's ALOT and at times a little confusing, safe to say I'm managing as the DM but we get to parts of the session where player asks to do something and I have no real answer unless I plan to spend the next 15-20 mins researching and debating. Since that gets pretty boring really quickly I just allow it and let them know at some point I will be knowledgeable if what they want is or isn't possible and if it isn't then I'll enforce it. First question, is this a good mindset for my first time DMing or should I stop the campaign everytime we get to unknown scenarios and hash out the logistics. Also have some questions about some DnD logistics, can they be discussed here or a different channel?
i really like your approach actually and you'll pick up on the rules as you see them more and more
but you can discuss logistics in rules or dm discussion if you'd like
with anything, not just DND, the smarter-long term option is to take your time learning
Making a call and discussing it later works fine
As long as your players know the answer may change, you're all good there imo
^^^ this is what id do if ur concerned abt game pace, just make it clear to everyone that its a learning experience and that rules may change as better interpretations come along
hi
keeping the pace up and not stopping the game is very important, you could always just take a quick "bathroom break" and search the rulebook for the answer to seem smart lol
I usually only pause for rules discussions if it's actually life or death for the characters
Otherwise, someone can look it up outside their turn if they really want to. Or I'll look it up later
yep my table trusts my rulings so we dont have long discussions mid game
Though I run with so many DMs that it's rare someone doesn't have an inkling
Hi im new to dnd only played once and it was just to mess around with. Could somemone help me with a few things i dont properly understand yet. Thanks
this, usually stuff like rules isnt too life or death so dont stop the pace immediately to look up a niche rule
lets hear it!
alright so, when for damage when it says 1d6+4 for example thats roll a d6 then add 4 and thats the damage right?
yup, make sure to roll to hit beforehand
and the strength thingy right?
and thats a D20?
yes
?
Roll to hit is a d20 plus any relevant modifiers, yes
plus strength (or dexterity if finesse) and proficiency bonus if proficient but yes
if ur strength says +1 u also need to add 1 damage or no?
That should be included in the +4 already
this
dnd beyond does all those calcs for you
and this is for roll to hit not damage
huh
im not sure how damage modifiers work but dnd beyond does that for you
Generally, modifiers affect both a weapon's attack roll and damage roll.
character sheets in general should have the dmg modifiers listed to reduce headache
when you make an attack, you roll a d20 and add strength + proficiency bonus and if that number is greater than the enemies armor class it hits them
Greater than or equal to
alright thanks one more thing for hitpoints on monsters n stuff when it says 33 thats hitpoints? then after it has 6d8+6. Whats that last part for?
"Meet or beat"
im using the wererat as an example
then I'm playing it wrong lol
The first number is an average of the rolled dice
So you can roll for hit points, or you can just use the average. Same with damage
33 is a suggested value as an average but you can roll the numbers to scale the monster up or down
Roll the d8 six times then add +6 (from it's Con modifier)
33 is the average of 6d8+6. A Dm can always decide to either take the average or roll for each monster
you can roll for hitpoints for monsters if you want to diversify encounters or make it harder to metagame
33 (6d8+6) means the the 33 hp is the mean average.
oooh okay thank you. That makes more sense
same for the damage monsters do
Can anyone explain how hit points and dice work pls and the technical stuff, the handbook doesn’t help
there is an average for monster damage and some dice to roll. DM choses
What don't you understand about hit points?
I also got another question, how does proficiency work
its a number based on your level that is added to rolls if you are proficient in that thing
Most spells tell you exactly what to do. Do you have an example of one that's confusing you?
Proficiency bonus is only added to your saving throws, ability skill checks, and weapons/spells you're proficient in.
it represents your bonus from being good at something
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
doin that now. i got a session im supposed to host in like 3 hours haha
So for example if I have +1 strengt. The proficiency is +1
You're DMing?
sadly yes
No. The proficiency bonus is separate from your stat bonuses
and i have the "most" experience
And you still don't understand the fundamentals of the game rules?
yep
throwing myself in the deep end
May I suggest you postpone the session? There's no point of you DMing if you don't understand how the rules work when the DM is suppose to be arbitrator of the rules.
no, the STR modifier is +1. proficiency is independent of that.
your proficiency bonus is a separate number going from 2-6 as you level up
How do I know how much proficiency I have
Based on your level. Level 1 has a +2 PB.
it is based on your character's level
ow
+2
Doh! I typed too fast! Thanks!
its based on your level. you can see it in the the class table for every class (but its based on overall character level)
whether you add it to something is an on/off thing
And u can only add proficiency if u have a positive modifier for ur skill?
I know a fair few things and how the game works i just needed a little help on a thing or two. If i keep postponing the game the players will not want to play sooo.
you either are proficient in something, or arent
no
if your proficient in that thing, which depends on background, class and race
whether you're proficient is seperate from your other modifiers
you could have -1 cha, but still be proficient in persuasion from say, your background
That's on you but if you don't understand the fundamental rules it's going to make the game slow if you keep pausing the game to look them up (there's nothing wrong with that... I do that)
If you want DMing advice then head to #dm-discussion
Winging it is definitely an option 😁 . Depending on the group you may not need every rule/to roll.
I'd say knowing how to parse statblocks is probably something you want to try to get mostly down beforehand
Do you have a DM screen that has some quick references?
and roughly how combat works
Google "DM cheat sheet" and print it out.
yeah, i got all the basics
So I can basically look that up if I use a pre-made character
some examples.
A human rogue is proficient in Shortbows. so to hit an attack they roll 1d20+Dexterity modifier+Proficiency Bonus
the same rogue is not proficient in Longbows, so they would only roll 1d20+dex modifier to hit with that weapon
wing it if i dont know it
Yes and no. Your players may get upset if you keep "winging" basic stuff that goes against RAW. Definitely look it up later to keep the game moving but I recommend have a "DM cheat sheet" (again google it to print a copy)
a character sheet will show what you're proficient in and what your proficiency bonus is
alright thanks, got no furder qeustions👍
thats a good idea ill look for one now and make one, thanks
Let your players know if you don’t know a particular rule, you’ll make a judgment call that you believe is fair in the moment. Then afterwords look it up and let the table know the official rule for reference going forward.
Thank you, I’ll probably binge the whole thing
ill do that too
Do you have any other questions about about any of the mechanics?
not really honestly
iv got the rest all figured out
im playing the dragon of icepire peak
Again, ask in #dm-discussion for DMing advice. This channel isn't for DMing related stuff.
i will in future thank you anyway
I got another question: So when I'm attacking I use the strength modifier to see if I hit. But what does the hit/Dc do
when you're attacking you dont always use strength
yh but when I do
What do you mean by hit/Dc?
When you attack, you roll a d20 and add your proficiency bonus (if proficient) + the relevant stat modifier. If the total number meets or beats the target's AC, it hits
You then roll damage as per the details of whatever you're attacking with
Hit/dc on the character sheet is where you put in your to hit bonus for your weapon or other attack
it's where you put your attack modifier (so str mod + pb in your case), or if it's something that needs a save it's where you put the save dc
Some things don't have a hit bonus. Instead they require the target to make a save, and the DC is the number the target has to beat
So if I see if I hit I do this: d20+STr modifier+ hit/dc modifier+ proficiency
No. The hit/dc modifier would include both your strength modifier and your proficiency already. That's part of how it's calculated
Generally speaking, that hit bonus is calculated as (proficiency) + (relevant stat modifier) + (any bonuses from the weapon) + (any bonuses from other abilities/items). With the first 2 being the most common.
So I need to do this: d20+hit/dc
Hello
Hi!
Trust the DM. Don't necessarily trust the NPCs the DM is playing 😁
Makes sense.

for wizards is there a limit to how many spells they can know or is it just as much as they can fit in their spell book?
It has something to do with ur level
If you manage to find the spells via other spellbooks/scrolls and have the money/time to copy them, the only limit is that you can't copy spells of a level you can't cast yet (or that aren't wizard spells)
There's a limit to the number of spells you can prepare, but not that you can put in your book
What Ratatoskr has said is right on the money.
For reference, you need 50 GP and 2 hours for each level of a spell.
You do have a limit to the number of spells you can prepare. This is determined by your WIZARD LEVEL + your INTELLIGENCE modifier.
Preparing spells means you can cast those spells. Generally, if a spell isn't prepared, you can't cast it. (Rulings vary.)
Do all spells require preparation?
Depends on your spell casting class
Some casters are prepared casters
also does the component pouch have the stuff in it already for spells or do I have to go around, find it, and put it in the pouch
Generally a component pouch has all the materials needed to cast spells that don't consume the resource
ok thank you
Nor cost gp
Class rulings differ!
Some classes require you to "Prepare" spells, such as the Wizard.
Other classes have "Spells Known", such as Ranger.
They innately know their spells, and are always prepared.
If it doesn't list cost or consumption then it's assumed you have it for free
Perfect! I'm a ranger
Some spellcasting classes are more versatile because of their ability to change prepared spells as days pass, while others are limited by their "Spells Known", the latter typically having other features to flesh out those classes.
hey guys just starting out ive heard of dungeon and dragons and i think its pretty interesting how does one start in the game and what are some things I should expect
Usually a good place to start with any game is to read the rules...

thanks bro
So here's some useful info (including links to the free basic rules) that can help get you started
i always thought it was interesting bc of the different classes
It can be lots of fun - playing with friends and collaborating on building a story based off your characters and the challenges they face and overcome (or fail at!)
is it similar to baldurs gate three?
Baldur's Gate 3 is based off of D&D so yes?
There are differences as the video game needs to do things to make it work as a video game
alright nice I saw some clips and i really liked the style of the game so i thought i might as well learn the basics of this
Some of the mechanics are the same or at least similar
Hi! I'm sort of new to dnd. I'm currently in my first campaign but I still don't understand dnd that much. Is there a website where I can read the rules over to be 100% sure I'm playing right? I don't wanna go too far and potentially ruin the campaign I'm in
Read the free Basic Rules.
Tysm ^-^
about to DM for the first time, really nervous!! i’m still relatively new to dnd, and i’m worried this might not go well- any tips??
do monk players usually prefer to use weapons or their fist for combat?
Check with the fine folks in #dm-discussion - but my number one tip is remember it's a game and the point of games is to have fun. Try and make sure everyone is having fun (including yourself). It helps to set boundaries and expectations (what topics are allowed, how to handle player disagreements, making sure everyone feels safe that they can stop the game if something is Not Right, etc.)
Early levels preference is made for spears or quarter staffs as they do a bit more damage for action and bonus action unarmed strikes. But after some level ups, unarmed strikes will catch up to weapon damage.
@soft halo you start in #looking-for-players
Just have fun
Oh, thanks man!
i am confused, i am a monk and it said in the rules that the hit dice is a d8 but when i do a unarmed attack on the character sheet in dnd beyond it shows a d4
Hit dice determines your hit points, not your attacks.
There's a lot of rules to remember, so you're gonna get stuff wrong even after you've been playing for a while. Try not to sweat it too much.
ah ok ty, im like very new to the game and still havent played a campaign so yea
No worries. That’s what this channel is for.
Hey I’m a new dm what do you think I should run as my first adventure to a bunch of new players
Lost mine of phandelver is a good beginner campaign
I was thinking about that one but I was scared it dose t explain the rules enoph for the players is thier any other campighn a /modifications of lost mine of chandelier that would make it better for them to learn
Definitely one of the premade ones for ease
I dont think you need to modify the campaign to teach them
That is something that is done primarily before the game, and along the way
I'd probably start with a one-shot or two myself. Maybe a mini campaign after
None of the campaigns goes in depth for explaining the rules to players, iirc. That's going to be more your job as the DM
But here’s the thing I’m also a new dm and I don’t know how to do a lot of what your saying
I don’t mind explaining the rules when shown up
But I don’t know how to initially show the rules
Explaining the rules is up to you as a dm usually
You can have your players read the free basic rules
You can run a practice combat session if you want to actively explain the rules, or yeah, just send them the rules
And help them with their character sheets. If those are built correctly, it helps a lot
I’ve tried the reason I’m asking this is none of them whant to read all they whanna do is jump in
If you can't get them to read, then you'll need to explain what they need to do as the game goes on
Build a tutorial session that connects to whatever campaign you want to run then
Dnd is a game for which u cannot skip reading forever
For example, if you need a skill check, you can tell them to roll a D20 and then add the appropriate skill bonus
In my experience, DMs usually end up doing that a lot for new players regardless
Is thier any resources that have short explanations of everything I could print out
Also, requiring them to read is an option. You don't have to let them jump straight in if you don't want to
There are a variety of different cheat sheets floating around online
But none of them have everything
Hi!
I'm 100% new in the DnD world. I bought the "Essentials Kit", but i haven't found anyone to play with (and learn), if anyone would like to take the time to teach me I'll greatly appreciate the assistance (I would like to play the game as a "player", but I would love to learn how to be a DM [eventually]).
End of communication lol :3
Does anyone have any links to cheat sheets
I mean we link to the free basic rules (check the pinned messages here in the channel) and some links to other useful resources.
Maybe try an internet search? I know some kind folks have put together quick reference guides.
Welcome! After you've read the start kit game rules, maybe go find an online group to play with - check #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community to find groups looking for players or even other D&D servers that may have games running you can join. After playing it a bit you can decide if you want to try being a DM. Or even before playing - some folks start playing D&D by being the DM right at the start.
I’ll try thanks and if anyone else have any ideas or resources for new dm trying to teach new players tell me thank you
Folks in #dm-discussion can help provide feedback or tips for DM'ing. My big tip is to focus on fun - D&D is a game and it's important that you and everyone playing is having fun.
Here is a new player guide to combat: https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/214803
And if you don’t have a DM screen, get or make one that has cheat sheets to help you out.
Thank you so much
Hello I’m back with another probably dumb question but I see on the monster stats next to HP is says 144 which is the creatures health but what is the (17d10 + 51) understand that it’s calling for 17 10 sided dice but but I’m not really sure what that information pertains to or what it’s for
The numbers in parentheses are the hit dice if you want to roll for them. The number before that is the average
144 is the average of the 17d10+51
so its a general idea of what you would roll if you rolled
give or take
Ohhhhh see
You guys are the best
Also I apparently can’t type tonight my apologies
I found in bonus action "two-weapon fighting", and I want to ask how does it work for Ranger's?
Like does it let you attack 2x?
Two-weapon fighting works the same for every class
If you take the Attack action while holding a light melee weapon in each hand and attack with one weapon, you can then make a second attack as a bonus action with the other weapon. However, the ba attack doesn't get to add your modifier to damage
you'd use it as like 2 crossbows
If you're using D&D Beyond, I think it just puts that bonus action in for everyone, to the confusion of many
you can fire 1 crossbow and use the second one as a bonus action
And it doesn't work with crossbows actually
really?
The ammunition property requires that you have a free hand to load the weapon
my whole life is a lie
Also two weapon fighting requires melee weapons
well technically rangers can use swords
but as i was saying in optimization rangers are just sucky fighters
Not really the place for that
aaand changing the topic
i feel like i walked in half a season late
For added confusion, there's also the two weapon fighting style and the dual wielder feat, which adjust how two weapon fighting works. But the above is the gist of the default version
How so?
a conversation already taking place and ending as i walk in,feels like i walked in on the end of an episode
Aah. Well unless you're dying to talk about two weapon fighting, we're ripe for a topic change
Two-weapon fighting is fun. :3
i dont play classes that gain access to fighting styles so topic change it is!
Hahaha ok, the are the feats good for Ranger's
Depends on what you're trying to do.
Dps
If you want to play a TWF ranger, dual wielder can be helpful. But it's not required and there are a lot of other options
hi
I'm a gloom stalker, archery
