gives like 5-6 languages
3
human 1, linguist 3, anthropologist 2
Eh, with undercommon, draconic and deep speech i've got the right language set to talk to those rare and perhaps complicated NPC's that a DM might throw our way.
We investigate something, meet a Drow and he doesn't wanna talk or something. Or we meet a Dragon and we wanna pass by unharmed. Or we meet an Alien? idk, im reaching rn, but you get my drift.
I wanna surprise the party in a tense moment, where i go "oh! oh! Oh, i can talk with this one, lemme try!"
nice thing with the anthroplogist spend a set amount of time around the people and you learn enough to stumble through a conversation
If you take Sage Background, then you don't need the scholar's pack, right?
I wouldn't say it like that
The shcolars' back gives you way more than the sage does, but that depends
Hi! I have a few questions if that’s okay?
So, what’s the difference between sorcerer, wizard and warlock
Sorcerors are those who were born with the magic. Wizards are those who studied theories and equations and other magical theorems. Walrocks are to put simply, sugar babies.
Sugar babies?? lmao
Sorceror- Kid born rich
Wizard- Nerd
Warlock- Sugar babies
Is there a place I can share my character sheet so I can get feedback?
Flavour wise, sorcerers are born with magic, wizards learn it, and warlocks are given it
Ohhh
I’ve wanted to play dnd for ages but my friend finally started a campaign so I get to play for my very first time
character discussion if you're looking for more flavor/backstory stuff, optimization if you're trying to get the biggest numbers and power out of your build
Mechanically, sorcerers and warlocks both use charisma as their casting stat, while wizards use intelligence. Sorcerers also get metamagic, but a smaller spell list than wizards. A warlock’s spell slots work in a very different way, they have a completely different spell list, and they get eldritch invocations
Well character discussion is also good for general “is this correct”
If I’m an elf do I have to not be certain classes or is it like a free for all
Because I read up on their lore and i just don’t know
any race can be any class can be any background
Its whatever you wanna be
Yeah but is it like some classes are better for certain races
Not particularly, assuming you’re using Tasha’s rules to move ability score increases around
Its a widely adopted optional rule from Tasha's Cauldron that any race can put their +1/+2 into whatever ability score they would like
To be more accurate
a Sorcerer has their magic be innate to their being. Draconic Bloodline may be draconic ancestry apparent from birth - but it could also be reflavored as having been blessed with dragon blood for saving a dragon's favorite town, or wild magic coming about from an inadvertent encounter with arcane experimentation, or the fey - this is in the same vein as the book says too.
A Sorcerer has Sorcery Points, allowing them to slightly adjust their spell slot selection, and slightly alter a property of a spell they cast.
A wizard learns their magic through intellect, memorization, experimentation, just study.
A Wizard has a Spellbook, letting them accumulate a large tome of spells they can prepare from.
A Warlock has made a pact with an otherworldly being, their Patron. The classic is a deal with the devil - the Fiend patron gives a warlock the ability to learn some fiery spells, for example, while the Great Old One deals in psychic and mental matters.
A Warlock has magic from their pact, and gains eldritch invocations - their class features, that you end up choosing as you gain levels.
Ok soooo how do I start a campaign
What part are you struggling in? PLot hook? Or just making one?
Imo the best way to start is to pick up a hardcover adventure
The Lost Mine of Phandelver and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle are designed for first-timers
Well I’ve played DND like twice with my sisters partner and they were good I kinda had an idea for one?
Just making one ig
I would reccomend buying a prewritten module before homebrewing one
Will do
As Para said, Phandevler and Dragons of Stormwreck Isles is a good start.
hey all new to the community looking to learn how to play D&D on discord have a couple of friends looking to learn D&D as well ive played table top before but never on discord
?tag new online
@winter gorge ^^
Is tce like a canon book?
Good luck, have fun.
a table that doesnt allow the PHB 💀
can I ask question about stuff from DnD beyond?
sure
why does unarmed fighting fighting style not apply to the astral arms of monks in the website?
I presume they have to be created as an attack different to Unarmed Strikes but scale with martial arts, so they don't immediately flag as unarmed strikes
but rule wise it should work with it?
yeah I think rules wise it should work
iirc astral arms are just another thing you can use to make unarmed strikes
so if you have something altering unarmed strikes
it'd also do that, since it's just a different way to unarmed strike
Alright thanks
Ah I had the same issue, I fixed it by creating a custom action and called it the same thing
What’s metagaming?
The first type is: Your character knowing something that only you as a person knows
For example: if the rogue in the other room found a chest and didn't tell anyone, and your character was no where near. They walk into that room and know where it is. But they shouldn't
The other type is just being meta, or optimized to be really strong
Ok gotcha
I'd say within D&D Metagaming is just using knowledge your character shouldn't have. Meta in the sense of being powerful sounds more like a comic book thing, and would be min-maxing in D&D.
Metagaming doesn't have to be bad. You need gentle metagaming to make the game work like agreeing to sleep in a camp with a bunch of strangers (your party), or realising the DM is offering you a plot hook and finding a reason why your character would go along with it. But usually metagaming is brought up in a negative context, where you are using knowledge your character shouldn't have in a way that breaks immersion or is akin to cheating.
Meta means strong to me cause of videogames, but yeah I agree
Meta and metagaming are, confusingly, both used in D&D discussion
Despite meaning totally different things
It might to understand what meta means
Meta means "about itself"
So when people talk about metagaming, that means "playing the game in a manner aware that its a game"
However, when you talk about "the meta", that's the "game about how you play the game"
Metagaming in D&D uses the former, to mean playing the game in a manner focusing on its game like nature, in conflict with or at the expense of roleplaying (which is the opposite of meta, I guess you could call it infra-gaming, playing the game within the game)
Hi, fellow newcomer here.
If a character dies in a campaign is that it for them in that game or in general?
Well there is resurrection magic, if your DM makes it accessible.
otherwise, there is no law or rule that states you cant reuse or recycle characters, but those character would typically be new versions of the same, and not the same as the one that died
Yes. You must then burn the sheet.
I joke - do what you like. And resurrection magic exists too.
Well, there is lots of different magical abilities that can bring characters back from the dead, so dying isn’t necessarily the end if your party has access to any of that. But, as for the heart of your question, each different campaign is normally considered to be its own world with its own history and story. If you choose to use the same character in a different campaign, it helps to think of it like an alternate universe version of the character. You can re-use them, even if the dies in a different campaign, though most players typically choose to use a new character every time. Re-using a character is not against any rules or anything, but it’s not typical
Dm I played with did that on a character death
Good to know, thanks.
No revivify lol
Thematic, but only cool with consent.
It was a good way to send off the character
Perfect explanation of meta-gaming
Do players ever need to leave the room because their character isn't with the others?
Potentially if it gives away plots or special information
If your mates go the pub & you go the zoo, you won’t know what happened at the pub 🤷♂️
So you'd use breakout rooms or something similar
Players are expected to be able to separate their player’s knowledge from their character’s knowledge. That is a basic tentant of the game. You should not need to separate players when information their character would not know is being revealed, because they should know better than to act on that knowledge
Makes sense, just wondering how easy it is to stick to
Basically, it comes down to how much you trust your players. I would only take measures like that if they have actively broken that trust
Fair enough. I suppose it would depend on the information too cause although players would try not to act on it. It could change there process
👍
Im a newbie and i've never played DnD but im soo excited to play soon. Buut i would like to add that you COULD just have the one person put on earphones and whisper to the one you want to have the information, but it can create tension. Or you could use digital softwares to "private message" "private info" Heck. Using whatsapp or something along normal DnD play could make for VERY interesting encounters. Say, you telepathically say something to someone. You could use whatsapp, but it slows the game down and when i say all this im more talking about playing with friends, bc then it doesn't matter WHAT you do. But when playing with strangers, i get that doing this is too complicated and you're better off just trying not to play on your irl knowledge. @livid root @fallen surge
Have you got your character sorted?
I have
(also haven't played yet)
Texting for telepathy seems logical, though I assume you'd need to clue the DM on that too?
Kinda new to dnd. My character just lost their left arm and got a new prosthetic arm. What are the plus and down sides of having a prosthetic arm??
Yeah actually 🙂
Yeah 100%. The DM doesn't need to know everything, but... he.. kinda does? Because he's the one who has to make a story that's fitting for YOU and if you uphold info from him, he just won't be able to prepare for it or play on it
Mechanically, like by the rules, I'm not certain. As is, as a simple replacement, it's just an arm. But in theory you could fit a storage compartment or small retractable weapon. It may need maintenance and repair from time to time. You might even be able to plate it in armour to count as a shield. Talk to your DM.
I'd say if you did armour it you'd only get the shield bonus when actively using it that way, so it has the same restrictions as a normal shield, just it's harder to take it away from you.
If a player wants to pick a lock is it sleight of hand?
Usually, I believe so. May need proficiency in thieves tools and the tools themselves to do it though.
Would you need to armor a prosthetic?
Sooo many options with a mechanical arm 🤔
Spinning blades, extra strength, slight of hand
Apparently
(As I make notes for future chars)
No, it's Thieves' Tool proficiency.
It would also depend on what your DM would allow I guess
The Prosthetic Limb magic item just replaces a missing limb, that's it. Nothing about storage and stuff. Otherwise it's #homebrew territory and not for this channel.
Special 🤔
My bad, it was my question and wasn't too sure what I can do with a prosthetic arm. :0 I'll definitely ask homebrew and if any ideas sound fun then I'll ask my DM if we can work with it
Got to ask somewhere mate
Locked Doors. Characters who don’t have the key to a locked door can pick the lock with a successful Dexterity check (doing so requires thieves’ tools and proficiency in their use).
Source: DMG: Adventure Environments
Picking a lock is a dexterity check. You add your proficiency bonus to the roll only if you have proficiency in Thieves Tools. It does not use the slight of hand skill
Clerics can change their spell list per long rest right?
Yes, they can change their prepared spells on a long rest.
Hey am Starting to get back into D&D, Am wondering if anyone would be able to help me figure out new lore and other Stuff that I've probably missed?
I’m starting as DM@soon and realising how much there is to learn. So focusing on what’s most likely to come up: stealth attacks with the halfling thief. Im seeing a few ‘phases’ that would come regularly. sneak along a dungeon corridor, check a door for traps, unlock the door, peer inside to see if anyone is there, sneak inside and sneak attack someone or shoot from door. Im not sure where I should be asking for the stealth checks or if one or two cover it. Im not sure if the door being opened would trigger a stealth check maybe at disadvantage? or just be an auto fail? Also, if he’s hidden does he get auto advantage on that attack for sneak damage? Then if he runs back down the corridor and round the corner and hides again - can he rinse repeat?
The rogue would need to make a Stealth check which would be against any creature's Passive Perception.
Soooo I just created my first character ever. I am completely new to DND. And have no Idea what to do next😅
What do you guys recommend I do?
If you want to ask further DMing advice head on over to #dm-discussion
Thank you - didn’t see that channel. Ill repost there as I’ll have a few follow ups -
Many thanks.
Hey there lads! i would love to get into DnD as a player, and I'd like some advice on how to get started, here's my experience:
General understanding on how a play session functions
100+ hours on Baldur's Gate 3, beat the game
General understanding of classes, lore, races, turns, actions etc. (mostly obtained from playing BG3)
Any things i should read/watch/know before getting into a campaign?

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
thanks mate!
This is probably a stupid question but what is critical role
It’s a live play dnd campaign run by a bunch of voice actors who also put out video guides to help people learn the rules of DnD
A youtube/twitch show of professional voice actors playing D&D

Ok I think I get some of it
If you have any questions, we're more than happy to help!
How do I respond to the posts in the looking for players chat?
every post should have a thread attached
Oh ok thank you
Is there like an online version of dnd cause I keep seeing people talk about games and online stuff
D&D is a game that is played in the imagination of the people playing it. All you really need to play is a way to talk to people, and dice. If you can talk to people online, then you can play D&D online
You either play D&D in person or virtually.
People who play online often use a virtual tabletop (VTT) to display (battle) maps to the players. However, that's optional because you can always use "theatre of the mind" (aka your imagination).
Is there a sci fi dnd counterpart with rules as good as dnd?
Nothing starwars related
Ask in #non-dnd-topics
Do what?
Sci fi campaing and stuff
There are non-D&D sci-fi TTRPGs out there. That's why I recommended to ask in #non-dnd-topics
I mean yeah i asked
D&D isn't the only TTRPG. There are TTRPGs to fill whatever niche you're looking for.
Hi I’m really sorry for bothering anyone but I joined this server on a whim since I love fantasy and connecting with other people who have similar interests so I thought DnD might be perfect
But I’m totally clueless lol
Does anyone know where I can find stuff out (learn the rules, lore, etc)

Thank you so much 🙂
Hi
Hello!
@obsidian orbit good luck and have fun
hii
Uh uh, it's "handbook-er helper"
reminds you of booger
Head on over to the #dm-discussion for advice
Ah, thanks for catching that.
thank ye
Hey um, is there like a DND beyond guide?
And what is the discussion all about? I've head there's some debacle about Wizards of The Coast or something? And OGL? Idk what that is.. Am i supposed to be worried about something, before i start buying DnD Products?
And also, i need help bc im not english-native. Are there german DnD books out there or is there a way to measure in Metres?
The OGL issues were a while ago, it’s fine now
There’s no conversion for metres, but you can just think of feet as a generic in game unit. There’s no need to know how long a foot is
The core rulebooks, at least, are available in German.
okay, cool
Also cool
Um... i have an idea and want to ask some1 in here what they think of it? could i, like... watch some ppl play DnD without playing myself? I mean, i could just jump in but i am a bit scared of just disrupting gameplay for everyone involved and by watching some1 play, while they stream what they do on DnD Beyond, could help me out, right?
You can find a lot of videos online of people playing dnd
Um... what about them using DnD Beyond?
There’s probably some where they use dnd beyond
Is something along the lines of that possible? I mean... i guess it's quite straight-forward, but im just a bit anxious
But generally, dnd beyond is just a dice rolling program and character sheet manager
So it wouldn’t be that different
One example is Critical Role, from campaign 2 onward they use DNDBeyond for character sheets
oh okay, cool. Do DM's lend a helping hand to new players? Like, if i don't know which bonuses apply at which times?
Yeah a good dm should
However, you should still try to understand as much as you can on your own
They'll help out confusions, but ideally a player has knowledge of the basic rules like what your ability modifier is, what "Roll for initiative" means, etc
hello, can someone help me make a dark-elf ranger
its my first time creating a dnd character
Yeah, i'll try my best to prepare beforehand
This is actually such a good advice. Im going through it rn and i didn't even notice the passive perception, insight and investigation checks
what are some good adventures to run as a new player hoping to play with new players?
i've looked into Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, but i want to know if there are any that you guys love and recommend
Are you going to DM?
Have you had a look at the basic rules?
yes
What part of it do you need help with?
kind of everything on the sheet like the inspiration, proficiency bonus, the spells, the skills
Are you using a pdf sheet?
a real sheet
if need be, yeah
You can ignore inspiration
As a ranger you don’t get any spells until 2nd level so ignore that for now
i'm hoping to find a dm so that i can get a game under my belt before i jump into dming, but if it comes to it i am happy to dm
ive watched a tutorial but where can i find the rules
Proficiency bonus is dependent on level, and is shown on your class table
They’re linked in the pinned messages
Dragon heist is a good module, but maybe not for a new DM. It takes a lot of prep to do well. I hear Wild Beyond The Witchlight is an easy run.
oh ok thanks
I would highly recommend getting the Starter Set since it's for new players and DMs.
thank you, i'll look into that
thank you
Seconding any of the Starter Sets (Lost Mine of Phandelver, Dragons of Stromwreck Isle, or the Stranger Things box).
yeah i looked into getting the starter set on dndbeyond, and it showed a 404 error? so idk if they sell that there anymore
Lost Mine is no longer available digitally, but you can buy it in print. Stormwreck Isle should still be available to buy on DDB, though.
Hello, Hi everyone. I am obviously new here and well I just wanted to ask a few questions.
I have no real idea what D&D is but because of a certain video i just watched a little while ago, my attention and curiosity was brought and now here I am in a D&D discord server.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.

I ask that someone please show me the ropes and have look at this character I made. Please judge it honestly and tell me what I may have done wrong and what I need to do right.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
okay
Quick Question
@cobalt frigate Excuse me but may I speak to you in dm? I want to ask you something via picture. Is that okay?
Hi i plan to ask this on discussion but i think its more on newcomer. So can you tell me exactly what dnd lore means
Is that do your own setting?
Lore is basically the history of the campaign setting.
PCs can't be gods.
I need some advice on being a DM for my first game. My friends and I are all newcomers and we got the essentials kit to run icespire peak. If anyone can hop on a chat/call to answer some questions I’d appreciate it. The book isn’t too clear on what to do in my opinion
Maybe ask in #dm-discussion
Thank u
Hiya. My boyfriend gave me a set of DnD dice and I've always been interested in learning I just don't know where to start
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
Perhaps he could teach you better in person than anyone here could?
So uh hey dudes. Been a fan of DnD video games and the like for nearly two decades, never had the pleasure of getting into tabletop until I finally scored an invite from the cool kid group to join for a session.
So. Uh couple of issues. 1)They know I'm a newbie, but what would be good prep so I'm doing the least I can to slow down the game.
2) Because of where they're at in the campaign, they want me to join as a level 5 character. Is this setting myself up for failure?
3) I'm kinda crushing hard on the monk class so if anyone has tips on character creation there...
Also, just as a general statement, I have been truly touched by how welcoming and just generally kind this discord community has been.
- read the basic rules, understand what your character can do
Sorry, was that super dumb question?
- no, starting at level 5 is fine
nah its fine, totally valid question
- nothing really special character creation wise for a monk
So for a first character, it's not going to be that hard to master? Some blogs recommend picking something like a fighter or fighter adjacent class like a Ranger/Paladine for your first go through.
And is there like any special unspoken etiquette rules I should be aware to be a courteous guest?
fighter is definetly easiest, but any martial (fighter, barbarian, monk, rogue) will be relatively easy
ranger and paladin are harder than monk tbh
nothing out of the ordinary
I'm just super excited because I always wanted to try tabletop and so make a good impression. Sorry if that comes across as cringe, just manners were something my family always emphasized.
nah, thats a perfectly reasonable thing to ask
After I build the character, what will the expectation be as far as items/weapons? Will they tell me or should I do my best to pick out my own?
ask them if they want you to use standard starting equipment or not
they may have some other option for you, given its level 5
@fleet field thank you so much for helping a stranger on the internet!
I guess one important thing is communication. Make sure to communicate with the players and the DM, especially the DM.
all good!
I suppose another thing you should do is to always respect the DM's decisions and rulings.
I thought the DM was like the god king of the adventure.
That would seem just basic courtesy. But I heard you, I will respectfully and graciously accept all my ass kickings without complaint.
He is, but it is not uncommon for players to argue about certain rulings.
||What's the standard starting equipment|| so sorry for the stupid question.
itll say in the monk class, its different for each class
What abt for bard?
itll say in the class description
it'll say it in the Bard class
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/bard#ClassFeatures under class features > equipment
"Equipment
You start with the following equipment, in addition to the equipment granted by your background:
(a) a rapier, (b) a longsword, or (c) any simple weapon
(a) a diplomat’s pack or (b) an entertainer’s pack
(a) a lute or (b) any other musical instrument
Leather armor and a dagger"
Oh! Okay I'm doing bard right thanks :DDD!!!!!!!!
all good!
Okay uh
I don't want others to be annoyed at my character cuz I'm not sure if they're overpowered or not.
But also, they kinda have to be OP cuz their older half-sibling is a god(Demigod promoted to full god)
So
Can I show ya'll and you could tell me if their OP?
is your DM okay with that?
Me, not having joined a campaign yet: Uh.
then don't.
Oke :D👍
You're meant to be at a consistent power level according to your class/levels
Coming in as "my sibling is a god so I have extra powers" is a fast way to become a bad memory
simply do your sheet normally
Ah no
Wait does having extra items count as that or?
Like
I have
Amulet of Health
Ring of Evasion
Cloak of Protection
Ring of Warmth
Should I be removing any of them?
All of them
K
magic items are a part of the game and only the DM will specificly allow any of them or you will get your hands on some while playing
Everything that doesn't was part of the starting equipment + what you get from your background
Tis criminal so can I still keep my 4 daggers
Equipment: A crowbar, a set of dark common clothes including a hood, and a pouch containing 15 gp
At most your DM will let you start with one magical item. Emphasis on "at most".
The criminal background doesn't give you any weapons
🙂 Ask your DM if you can purchase more basic items with the 15GP of your starting equipment with this
Okay thank you :DDD!!!!
A dagger only costs 2GP, so you could get 4 daggers with that without problems ^^
If you want a suggestion: If you can purchase more items do yourself a favor and get a healer's kit for 5GP
doesn't matter what class and character you play 😄 it's worth it
Okay :DDD
Thank you :DDD
I don't think any background does
It's class based
Have pancake and coffe
well... there is the dagger option in the soilder background :3
OYE, i wanna DM and am new to the idea, any tips? ^^
Equipment: An insignia of rank, a trophy taken from a fallen enemy (a dagger, broken blade, or piece of a banner), a set of bone dice or deck of cards, a set of common clothes, and a pouch containing 10 gp
Do it! 😄 And don't hold back in fear of mistakes or mishaps. That will even happen to a DM with years and years of experience.
thanks fellow Cleric!
As long as you have fun no project is to big or to small. Yes, a oneshot is a really good start but what counts is to be enthusiastic and open to learn
It doesn't matter if you plan a hole own world and work years on your setting until you don't want to do it anymore as long you had fun while planing and learning
ofc! i have ran a few oneshots before, and thought i did pretty good. Now I'm planning on making a campaign. in fact I've done a LOT of work too, and im actually not worried about it bein derailed by my players hahah
my personal tip: you just need to know where to find your material fast - a good list of bookmarks are your dear friend
heard 👍
Could I join your campaign?
in times of trouble as a DM: just make a short toilet-break 😄 it doesn't matter for the players if you really need to pee or just need some minutes to resarch or prep something for the running game
sadly I'll need to decline that offer. I've got a lot of people in this campaign already and theyre all close friends. BUT i would love to play a lot more dnd
handy trick, i got the feeling youve had to do that yourself before too lmao
Tis okay :DD!
is still in searching for her limit
I am excited about this campaign too, everyone's going to bard college and will be multiclassing as bards. one of my players is already a bard, and i plan for him to learn from another player/npc so he can multiclass as a different class. super stoked
xD sounds like a lot of fun and dirty jokes
theres definitely going to be a lot of that for sure knowing these guys lmao
though this campaign will be very mature i feel
no clue why i think that though haha
mature like R18 xD or mature like they will really dive into the game and don't only joke around?
NO xD just really in depth, and they'll dive into it! lol
Hi , what kind of D&D books would you recommend for younger children, 8-10 y.o.? We will be starting the D&D games slowly, but I'm interested in nighttime reading type of stuff. They already read all of Harry Potter
If they already done with the whole Harry Potter Univers they are already past and above everthing that would one recommend for this age 😅
to be honest, you could basicly use everything in DnD at this point because it's a lot more harmless than HP 🤔
I am not familiar with DnD fiction, and just looking to get them into the lore with stories. Any recommended stories, sort of like adventure books but without the gameplay
Possibly stories that parallel the adventure books , so that it would be easier for them to follow the adventure books with me
🤔 oh, I'm not into this myself so others might know more stuff... but I think the Drizzt Books are known and now reused for new material... but Drow are maybe toooo much for kids...
I know that Curse of Strahd has a SpinOff with I, Strahd as a Book... but I don't know if the content is relevant enough or good... hm...
Take a look at the Young Adventurers collection.
i just got a dnd starter set
^^ nice, the new or the old one?
How do i get into dnd? Is there a specific book with all the rules and stuff?
😄 Your Luck: The rules are free and easy to get at https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Hell yeah
But all you need to get into dnd is a group. It's not madatory to read all the rules and get everything to start with dnd.
A friendly DM will help you with your character and with a fun group you will learn everything needed while playing.
Is it possible to play dnd solo like baldursgate 3?
Not the "real" normal DnD, BUT there are some solo games aaaaand there was a online mini-solo-adventure
Neat
it's like the prestory to the starter set and will help you find a class for you
I only need to remember where to find the link... 🤔 maybe someone has is ready to hand?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/how-to-play-dnd this site has a lot of usefull information
I don't really know, maybe a moderator might know more?
Yes, it is
hm... damn, I know I have played the little intro to the set... but on wich site was that...
@lyric fjord Found it!
A cute little solo Text Adventure to get into DnD
I got the new one dragons of stormwreck isle
Yes, Wizards owns and curates this server, and all the moderators are paid employees of WoTC.
With the exception of community managers, I think, who do not moderate, but are still WoTC employees.
If you have server related questions, #moderator-support is the best place to ask them
Apologies if this is the wrong place for this but I really want to DM games online, what's the best way of starting up a game where the players know that the DM is brand new and still learning, I've been thinking of setting up a game online but am worried that players won't want to stick with a new DM
In my experience, a lot of folks are willing to play with a new DM - and being up front about that is probably the best thing you could do!
As long as you make things clear from the beginning so everyone has proper expectations, it should be perfectly fine
Thanks for the responses guys! I think I'll just have to set expectations and dive in
Guys how do I use the bot to post a ad looking for players to join my campaign
Go to the #find-a-game and use the command “/looking-for-[blank]” depending on which channel you want to post in
Also would it be cheating if I as the dm gave the players the ability to use spells even if there not a spell caster
Can you rephrase that question? I don’t quite understand what you are asking
Like say I wanted to give each player a enchanted item that lets them cast some spells from any class of soellcaster they wanted would that be cheating
Even if there not a spellcaster
it wouldnt be cheating per se as if youre the dm you kind of control the world and the rules but also like that changes a lot of fundamental things about the game and stuff
Yes. It this is a non combat adventure I’m gonna dm
Well “cheating” is a strong word. You are the DM, so you decide what is or is not allowed. Magic items are a normal part of the game, and many magic items grant the ability to cast spells. You shouldn’t be concerned with whether or not something is cheating, but rather whether or not it’s balanced
@lyric fjord Aside from reading the rules, this is a good place to start for how to run the game: https://howtogm.guide/
There's lots of advice online, on YouTube especially, for being the DM. For running published adventures, here are some handy videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcjK8oXEx5I
I appreciate it!
hello, im trying to come up with a last name for my character, any ideas? 🤷♀️ they're a tiefling wizard if that helps
i went with Talthor sounded nice
ill give this a read as well, thank you
Websites like https://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/ can really help with inspiration
If you want to work on your character, #character-discussion I’d the proper channel for that.
Talthor Belliard~?
ah thank you
Besides generators, one of the most common ways to create a fantasy last name is smashing two words together: Sturm Brightblade. Pike Trickfoot. So consider what qualities you want to highlight about the character, and see if you can weave that into the name.
And yes, in future, #character-discussion is the best place for these sorts of questions.
cheers
Hello
I am new to the game and just want to know if there is any way to play online
With my friend group
theres a steam game called Table top simulator 🤷♀️ , never used it though, so i dont know if it works well for D&D
Is there one on mobile?
?tag new online
That article gives an overview of how to play online. You don't need any special platform or software, really, but there are virtual tabletops that let you show maps, pipe audio, and host character sheets. Some require payment while others are free.
Ok, is there a bot that acts like a DM
My friend group would preferably like to act as a squad
No, you'll need one of your group to assume the role of DM.
Hi im new
hello uwu baka
Can some on teach me some D&D rules im going to be a DM for my friends in school and i want to play some online d&d with random people.
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.
- Check out #find-a-game to find a group to join.
Here’s s some useful links/resources to help get you started
thx
Hey quick question if im right DnD is basically a pick your own adventure game with the dice deciding the outcome of your actions right?
D&D is a collaborative group game with the Dungeon Master (DM) acting as the referee. The players and the DM are the co-narrators of the game's story.
Go on
Check out the bot post slightly above
There are also many youtube live plays if you’d like to see how it works in action
Ok yeah i think i get it Now
Just keep in mind that role-playing doesn't mean "acting". Some do it and enjoy it. Some are good at it, others are not, but role-playing can also mean, that you just decribe your character's action in a 3rd person perspective. Just in case you feel uncomfortable with acting
Alright thanks for the clarification
Hey everyone
Well actually I never played dnd before so idk what is it abt and what to do

i thought tieflings were just really small humans
badummtss
but they're actually just red people
Are you maybe thinking of halflings?
they are humans with influences from fiends
yeah i was thinking of halflings
id rather be a tiefling then a halfling, im already short irl i dont want to be short in dnd
No shame in being a pocket prince
red horned people with tails
wow they have tails
How can I play if I don’t know anyone that plays DnD?
You can find games online or somewhere like a game store, library, or school club.
See if a teacher or staff member would.
Take turns
is there an alternative to using minis? i would like to use them but my dad sold his a while ago
you could make paper prints ^^
Coins, candy, whatever you like.
Hey i have a question so i how are like the DnD sessions are they held in DnD beyond campings thingy or is it through group chats or any other app/website
D&D Beyond isn't a full virtual tabletop, so any communication will likely happen on another platform.
that is actually probably the best idea for my group
👍
hi
Upside for candy: you get to eat the enemy afterward!
my thoughts exactly
i'm thinking of doing something more milestone based instead of experience based anyways, so that would work well as an instant reward for the player
they'd just have to hope i dont have a hunger for adventurer candy
its a storytelling game, basically
you create characters and the dm puts them in the setting of an adventure and you laugh and roll dice and have fun destroying your enemies
this might help :3 and #find-a-game
tyy
have you had a chance to read through the basic rules yet?
nope
ty
with this little text adventure you can play while learning more about the game
- The DM describes the situation. They control the world and everyone in it except for the players.
- Each player controls one character (typically). Each person describes what they want their character to do.
- If needed, dice are rolled (to determine success/failure).
- The DM describes the results.
The result is a story you all make together. That's D&D in a nutshell, though the rules you've been pointed to go in more depth about how it all works.

hii im helping put together a dnd club at an elementary school, but i know nothing about it! can someone explain the basics to me?
Read the pinned message above.
Hello guys
That's awesome
hi
Pretty new to D&D, excited to talk to you guys about it!
How to be a great player from a recent Bandit's Keep video:
- Get Involved/Ask questions
- Get into your character / their details. Think about your character as an actual person.
- Be a fan of other player's characters. Ask them questions about their character.
- Be a team player
- Be yourself
"It’s all about punching
Strength is how hard you can punch
Dexterity is how fast you can punch
Constitution is how many times you can be punched
Intelligence is knowing where to punch
Wisdom is knowing when not to punch
Charisma is convincing the other guy to punch themselves" - i really like this explanation of the stats
that describes it pretty well
guys, I've only DM or played with new characters, the bonus action that people get at lvl 5 in most martial classes, is that ONLY for anothe attack or could a spell user use it to hit then cast a spell. Like does it equal 2 action points or is it only 2 attacks? My small group when we roate who dms, we thought it was for two actions, but we had an older DM come in and he explained that it's only for attack swings,
Most extra attack features say that when you take the attack action on your turn, you can make two attacks instead of one. An attack is a different action than casting a spell.
However, Bladesinger (a subclass of wizard found in Tasha's Cauldron) has an extra attack feature that allows the user to cast a cantrip in place of one of the attacks. This is not standard, though. There are no "action points" and bonus actions don't enter into any of these features, to my knowledge.
Question - I'm a hands on learner and tend to ask questions, not a visual/reading learner. Total opposite of my son. I do have the 5e player guide, but as confused as I get, can't keep up with it. Is there anyone willing to walk me through building a character so I can better understand the basics? I understand it's not the best route, but with a.d.d. I feel it's my best chance
ahh okay, thanks. ❤️
Charisma is convincing the other guy not to punch you
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbooker Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. Watch them at your pace.
After you read the rules and/or watch the tutorial videos, feel free to ask questions here.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Got it, thanks
Fighters lvl 2 adrenaline would let someone cast a 2nd spell tho right?
Are you playing fifth edition? Because there's no such mechanic for the class at that level.
Do you mean Action Surge? There's no "Adrenaline" feature outside of Ravenloft Survivors...
yes sorry, I'd like to blame BG3 using a heart pic so I just say adrenaline, but yes action surge as the name implies means it does yeah?
Action Surge is simply, a second Action. So a 13th level Eldritch Knight Fighter with their two 3rd level spell slots would be able to use two actions in one turn to cast two Fireballs.
however, there's a rule for bonus action spells:
?tag rule baspells
Bonus Action Spells
If you want to cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 bonus action, remember that you can’t cast any other spells before or after it on the same turn, except for cantrips with a casting time of 1 action. [BR, XGTE]
Keep in mind that this particular limit is specific to spells that use a bonus action. For instance, if you cast a second spell using Action Surge, you aren’t limited to casting a cantrip with it. [SAC]
Hmmmmm, so if I did a fireball, I couldn't do anything that is a bonus action, but I could do another fireball?
since it's just an action
If you had a second action to use for a second Fireball, only accomplished via Action Surge.
Can someone explain to me how mounting and combat works with a level 5 paladin using find steed?
So when it says "enemy must make a wisdom saving throw or get hit by 1d4 psychic damage" how do you determine the number they need to roll?
The casters spell save dc
The target creature makes the wisdom saving throw and it has to equal or beat the casters spell save DC or they take that psychic damage.
Ohhhhh, so to be saved from vicious mockery you would have to roll 13 if the casters spell save dc is 13?
Yep
But that's only for spells with saving throws right?
like with a regular mount
idk how those work
the target only makes a saving throw if the spell calls for one
so i get 60 speed if im mounted on a warhorse ?
So super imposing favor to ask, but I'm stoked to play my first first realm table top game this weekend. Only slite concert is that for where there campaign is at they want me to build a lvl 5 character. Anybody with monk experience or just anyone willing to take a look at my character sheet and tell me if I'm in the right direction?.
you can think of it like that, but its probably more helpful to think of it as you having no speed, but instead you can use the mount's speed
post it in #character-discussion and ill have a look
I was curious as to the proper venue.
and i assume its up to the dm whether the monsters target me or my horse if i am mounted?
when your mount provokes an OA, the attacker can choose to attack the mount or the rider
is OA only when you move away or disengage?
disengage causes your movement to not provoke OAs
but if i am moving to the enemy and smacking it with my greatsword that wouldnt trigger OA?
no, only moving out of their reach provokes OAs
although there is a feat that causes moving in to your range to provoke OAs
ok so if they run away from me then it triggers my OA and i can hit them
yes
well, you can use your reaction to make an attack against them, and maybe hit them
i have sentinel feat
Hi new here
hi
yeah, that also has a few interactions with OAs
specifically, even if they disengage you still get an OA
Let’s take the more advanced rules questions to #dnd-rules
Anyways what is the reason you joined dnd
Like joined this server or like what got me into D&D?
for what got me into dnd, my friends invited me to a game they were running
What got you in dnd
Am I able to use an existing character in other campaigns?
Me is that you can make your character how ever you want
Usually different groups will have you create a new character for that group’s games/campaign
But you can always check
Got the red box back in 1980’s timeframe as a birthday gift. Dabbled with it. Got into Shadowrun in the 90s. Then life got busy. Came back to RPGs in 2014 with Rogue Trader and then circled back to D&D.
I really enjoy D&D 5th edition’s approach and enjoy the fun stories my friends and I have been able to play/experience.
How do I set up a lvl 18 game
starting at lvl 18 is not recommended
@fleet field I'm testing something
It's probably will be 17 and it's for a campaign I'm already running
can't imagine how long a session 0 would be for a lvl18 XD
Hello all 👋
hi!
Kinda new to dnd kinda not if that makes sense ?
i joined because i wanna get back to playing D&D and no one will join me for one around where i live
You can start a game by Dm yourself
Or
Online
But also, have you explored your local gamestores, schools, etc
Check out your local game shop, school/library club, and Facebook/Meetup D&D groups
When playing DnD online using DnD Beyond, am i supposed to know about how certaing things work? Like spotfiy? I've heard of DM's that let their Players control the music everyone hears and im wondering. Is that also a thing in Online Campaigns where the DM can use a tool to make sure we all hear the same music or does everyone just puts on music at their own discretion? Im okay with whatever, i just wanna make sure i know how these things work 🙂
I know this isn't really the thing to worry about when looking for a match of DnD, but i was just thinking about this as i was watching a campaign just now
It can vary per group. I personally use Discord voice calls and the Watch Together activity for music.
Okay, cool thanks
What do I do in this server?
ask for help, share ideas, whatever
We discuss DND basically
We bounce ideas around, figure out rulings, discuss the general vibe or potential styles of how tables can run the game, and so on
In what specific way? We're happy to help but need to know how
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
Idk how to find people to play with
Good 2:45 in the morning to ye I have the largest fuel of bullshit known to man to just to learn how to play this game in the middle of the night
Any tips for online play?
Um yes
Basically don’t talk over each other
Don't think u understand I am a complete newbie I have no idea where to even start
😎😎😎
?tag new online
Thank you
you looking to play in person or online?
If in person: finding local game stores, or groups in the area you can meet with.
Online: Using #find-a-game and having patience, or using stuff like roll20 or other discords or sites or whatever.
I’ve never done either, so not sure
😅
Well thats a good place to start, its generally easier to find an online game because distance doesn't mean anything over the internet. But (imo) in-person games are more social
I think in-person would definitely be more difficult to accomplish…
yeah, youre limited by the number of nerds nearby as to whether playing in-person is possible or not
Any good places to find an online party? Also, are all DM’s pay to play?
Check #find-a-game
Paid DMs are in the vast minority ime
Use that channel OldMan linked, or you can check out the countless subreddits, facebook pages, Roll20, etc. dedicated to getting players together for online games
Okay thank you!
is a dndbeyond subscription worth the money?
depends
just the unlimited character slots is a huge thing by itself
it's 5 bucks a month for seemingly a good amount of stuff, but i thought i would ask anyway
there are alternatives which give you this for free
Dicecloud, for example
it's a tiny bit more legwork at character creation to put it in but stuff like Libraries of Vexus makes it a breeze
DDB is also well known for being buggy (it still doesn't work for some of the Tasha's subclasses, and hasn't for many years now, with no signs of fixes), whereas stuff like Dicecloud is pretty actively maintained
ok, and as far as sharing unlocked content with other players, i bought the physical versions of a players handbook and tasha's book, so i dont really need to worry about that sharing thing either, right?
yeah
for context me and my party would be playing in person
IMO, the only real advantage of DDB is name brand recognition, as it's officially affiliated with Wizards. Beyond that? I'm not sure why I'd use it.
If you're a new player, DDB hides too much stuff from you, and is just a hindrance to learning the game.
If you're an experienced player, you won't have any trouble learning another tool (not like new players will anyway)
Buying just the physical book is also cheaper than buying physical and digital
i bought both
it seems to make character creation super easy to do, which i appreciate
i also considered printing off my created characters and saving the info on a word document before deleting them off the ddb site so i can create more
This is kinda the problem
The system is pretty straightforward after you've done it once, but DDB hides a lot of it from new players
No it’s not cause not everyone learns the same way
I've had issues with player retention because they used DDB as a crutch
Both when DMing and playing
that makes sense
i'm coming from bg3 and watching critical role, so a lot of the finer details i dont know yet, but most of the rules of play i have a good grasp on
Honestly? I find paper sheets are the way to go for new groups, but YMMV - tech-savvy groups will like Dicecloud because it's digital, but I wouldn't recommend Dicecloud to seniors in a retirement home
so it wouldn't take me very long to figure out how to just build a character from the book physically rather than using the site
i'll give it a shot when my book gets delivered
Yeah I don't think you'd be gaining much from DDB tbh
ok, thank you for the input! you saved me 5 bucks next month lmao
Gonna be honest, I highly disagree with what’s been said here. Fed, you are calling DDB a crutch, but that means you are assuming playing with pen and paper is the default that people need to stride for. That’s just not true. Playing with a digital character sheet and playing with a paper character sheet are just two different methods to do the same thing. Neither one is better or worse than the other. Encouraging people to stay away from DDB because it’s a crutch makes about as much sense as telling someone to not write with a pencil because it’s a crutch for when you will want to use a pen
Whether you decide to use DDB or not, you seem to be mistaken about something here. The subscription service for DDB is not necessary for using the digital character sheets, nor does it unlock any content for you. You don’t have to pay a monthly fee to use the site
i am well aware that it doesnt unlock any content as well as not having to pay to use the site, i was merely asking if people thought subscribing was actually worth it
I don’t personally use a DDB subscription, and I have been using their site for years now, so I don’t think it’s necessary at all
The subscription is only worth it if you're a DM who wants to share your digital books with your players.
I play exclusively online and I prefer having my players use DDB instead of Foundry's built-in character sheets, mostly because it would be more work setting up the character sheets with the various playable races and classes.
So is standard array for stats like a default?
Okay, cause I heard that not ALL DM’s accept point buy, so I’m kinda iffy about using it
Okay, so I’ll just go ahead and use standard array
Heyo
Hii
I'm newish to dnd, have played a few sessions a long while back; but the group fell apart
that's happen quite some time 🙂 but a new adventure awaits surely
#find-a-game will help you out ^^
Is paid worth it?
you don't need to pay to play to have equally fun
I just figured maybe the group would stick together better if they paid lol
not much ptp rounds live Long enough to be of worth was I being told
friend of mine was despreate to play
17 out of 21 ptp games dies in under 5 sessions
Last time I played we got like 2 sessions in then someone stopped coming and then 3rd we lost another and got a new person and it just fizzled from there
I'll try another free group for now probably
sadly that doesn't count for DMs...
oouuch
my friend tells me he sees a hand full of DMs misuse the ptp mentality... they prep one short intro and only play these first sessions over and over again
with new groups every time, for some easy money
he sends me screenshots from some of his games he paid like 20 $ for one single session and I screemd to see the poor quality
I always thought that pay to play whould mean quality stuff, like good maps, propper token for monsters, sounds ans stuff - but no
Well like with any game, paid or not, it also comes down to the DM. There are good ones and bad ones, and paying doesn't guarantee anything sadly
Hello 🙂 take a look at #find-a-game there you can find what you are looking for
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
It’s too big to just explain over discord
Looking at the rules is the best way to learn the rules
Yeah that explains all the important stuff
try this :3 https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
it's a fun little text adventure version of the game to grasp the concept and learn something about the game and the world
Although Roll20 does have a list of games starting soon on it. Might be worth a glance. Do be aware they host free and paid games, though.
Hi, I'm like completely new to D&D like I've only just created my chracter on the D&D beyond website. I've never played any kind of D&D or D&D like games. I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this message. But pretty much I have no idea how to find a game or group or anything. And it says newcomers and I'm as new as it gets so uh. Can anyone help me like get started? Also I don't think I fully understand the rules of this server yet, it's kinda confusing.
Welcome! 🙂
For startes you will find a lot of usefull information for you in the 📌 pinned messages
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online On this side you find a lot of different infos for whatever sparks your interesst at first
#find-a-game might help you find a group to start playing
But don't be afraid. You don't need to know all rules and everything about D&D to start playing. A lot of things will get clear as you play
and DnD ist mostly a reaction game ^^ The DungeonMaster (DM) will guide you through it
The "Find-a-game" Chat is like completely empty though? Am I supposed to put something in there?
completly? without any text?
no Like there are the rules from dyno and then a thread under it but that's it.
Did you read that text?
yes
It explains
- What game finding channels we have
- Which game finding channel you should use
- How to use those channels
- Other ways to find a game
It's all there, including what commands to type out to bring up the form to submit your game
you can click on those text with blue background and a # in front
well I did read through it, and from what I could tell I should go to "looking for dm" but I can't post in there at all and all the games there are like hybrid games or sound advanced for advanced players. So that's why I'm here because I'm kinda lost on how to navigate this server
Look at #find-a-game to find out how to post in the looking for game channels. Most games posted in #looking-for-players will be VC on Discord and will also specify if they’re okay with newcomers.
If you’re interested in a game I’d recommend asking the DM how they feel about new players. Some games are specifically designed to accommodate for newbies while others aren’t
including what commands to type out to bring up the form to submit your game
you have to type in a command, such as /looking-for dm, to bring up the form where you submit your game
It's described in #find-a-game
Oh okay so where do I paste the command? in the "find a game" channel?
correct, that's why you can type in that channel
As you type the command, it should autocomplete
Okay thank you!
Is alignment optional? If I'm playing a paladin, do i need to be lawful good?
Paladin is one of the classes where rolplay ls actualy important
It would get a bit complicated
You are not required, by the game rules, to be any alignment
That would be a question for your DM
I see
Good morning, everyone 🙂
Gm even tho the timezones
I plan on buying the Crooked Moon Book and wanna do a paid game so I not poor XD but how you do that I'm so lost with like all the stuff I can't find any channels
Is this a dnd game?
Then if you want to advertise a paid game you would put an ad in #paid-looking-for-game by following the instructions in #find-a-game
ive never played dnd and it looks really fun. how do i start?
Have you read the basic rules?
to be honest all of that looks alien to me. i wanna say that i kind of have an idea of how general gameplay loop goes? as far as creating a character and how that character influences gameplay and whatnot im clueless
i should have led with "i saw an hour long video of one session and it sounded fun." otherwise i have consumed no form of dnd content outside of the occasional person painting a little figure on tiktok or something
i saw the movie as well but i would imagine thats not anything near how gameplay is
Oh, good, the bot really is down. Take a look at the pinned messages in this channel!
gotcha ill check it out thanks
@unkempt eagle If you want I don't mind helping you out like with any questions or stuff you got
Here's the master post, for reference.
i would definitely appreciate it. it sounds like a bunch to get into so im not really sure where to start. im checking one of the sites from the pinned messages now
@unkempt eagle yeah we could call or something if you literally just want someone to guide you through the stuff
word im down
peeping it as we speak
no way baldurs gate is from dnd?
Baldur's Gate takes place in the Forgotten Realms, which is a setting from D&D, yes. The gameplay of Baldur's Gate 3 is primarily based on the rules for D&D 5e, including skill checks, saving throws, attack rolls, spells, and much more. They took a few liberties with the rules in order to make the game better fit a video game, but its still a good groundwork for understanding the rules of the game
@lyric fjord @near parrot I have a guide on looking for groups/games that might be helpful in your search: #third-party message
thats pretty cool. i havent gotten to try baldurs yet
Baldur's Gate 3's story is actually a direct sequel to a published D&D adventure called "Baldur's Gate: Decent into Avernus"
Do they have wish spell o.o how does a broad spell work in a videogame
Oh wow
BG3's level cap is 12, so you can only get 6th level spells at max
Makes sense
ello
Hey so I would like to play DnD but I'm not sure if I can properly play? I played Baldur's Gate 3 and fell in love with it so I'm kinda familiar with some of the lore of Faerun, I don't have any equipment or dice but I would still love to play DnD

Hey, the bot's back!
Okay nice! Thanks!
If you are coming from BG3, do keep in mind that the game made quite a few changes to the rules. All of the basic rules are the same, but you might find some spells and abilities work completely differently. So, be sure to read things carefully as you make the transition. Don't just assume you know how something works from the game
Yes I figured haha, but is it possible to combine classes? For example Fighter and Sorcerer?
Or does that depend on what the DM allows
Multiclassing is an optional rule. Not all DMs will allow it. It's also tricky so not recommended if you're new to the game.
Assuming your DM does allow multiclassing, the actual rules for it are very similar to how they work in BG3, with the small change that each class has stat requirements that you must meet to go into or out of that class
Ohh okay, and the more you level, the more you can upgrade your stats (for example int) so that you can become a level 1 wizard for example
alright thanks!
Yes, but only every 4 lv of one class you get the chance to improve your stats
yess okay
also I'm assuming that you can only have a limited amount of spells while in combat? Not like in spellslots but like using different spells
This is the reason why multiclassing is usually considered an 'advanced' playstyle, not recommended to new players. And that's not even getting into how spells and spell slots get calculated.
Some spells take too long to cast to be viable for combat.
But otherwise, whatever you have prepared (or known) can be cast.
Unlike baldurs gate, you can only cast a leveled spell once per turn, so you can't spam two fireballs. And haste can't be used for casting
Also same as Baldurs gate, only one concentration spell can be cast at the same time

Dyno's back!
But you can only have a specific amount of spells that you can use in combat? So you can only use like for example 12 spells (goes up per lvl)
I'm still not sure what you mean, you can cast any spell you learn or prepare, just like bg3
Your only limit is spell slots, and what you know
You are limited with the use of spellslots, yes. You only have 2 Spellslots Lv 1 Spells as a Wizard on Lv 1 as an example
Ohh okay I understand now 🙂 Thanks
Let's put it like this:
Depending on your class, you can only bring a certain amount of spells with you every time you go out adventuring. The number of spells you can actually cast between rests is determined by your spell slots.
For example, a level 1 Sorcerer knows 2 leveled spells. They won't be able to bring any others with them when they go adventuring. They can cast either of these spells whenever they want, but can only cast 2 spells between long rests, because they only have 2 spell slots.
So, I learned about dnd by the stinky dragon podcast, but I'm not entirely sure the basics, dice especially

Do you have a special question in this regard?
Well I'm really new to the concept. I don't exactly know what I should do when making/filling out the Character sheet. It's very complex and mostly it's simple questions about stuff that is basically very little needed to know most likely
In the bot post above, you will find a link to the basic rules, which explains in detail how dice are used in D&D. But at its most basic level, the way it works is that the DM will decide how difficult a task is, and assign a number to this, called the Difficulty Challenge (DC). You roll a d20, and add modifiers to that roll. If you tie or beat the DC number the DM chose, you succeed in that task. If you got a number below the DC, you fail.
And then the DM will describe what happens when you succeed or fail
Ohhh that makes a lot more sense. What are some like. Unlisted rules you should follow when playing? Like. Things I should know so I don't make any dumb mistakes
D&D isn't like a video game lobby where you can easily do a "quick casual game" because it takes time for the DM to prep.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes ^^
You can go to #find-a-game for instructions on how to find a game, but as a fair warning, "quick casual games" of D&D don't exist. It takes a LOT of work to get a group of people together and to plan out what they will do for several hours
arent there any premade campaigns one can play through with a group for funsies?
DMs still have to prep and there are waaaaay more players than there are DMs.
It's part of the game and even advanced players and DMs make mistakes. 🙂 Just play along with what your DM says and everything will be fine
I see. Thanks so much for the help
Maybe you should look at the starter set ^^ There are even a free Intro on dndbeyond for trail
Ohh one more question. So. On average how long are most games?
I'd say expect anywhere between 2 and 4 hours of play.
If you're asking how long a campaign can be, that varies widely.
A single session usually ranges from 2 to 4 hours. A campaign will last several weeks, maybe even years, depending on the story and the DM
But a game that you will play in one go is called "Oneshot"
My group plays once a week for a three-hour session. The campaign has been going on for almost two years and it'll probably be at least another 2.5 years before we'll finish it at the rate the players are going.
Same with my group
Sometimes table-groups play a whole weekend trough with breaks in between 😄
So for a first game, what should I be aware of. And, how does one get there.
Be aware of what you're putting into the game
My list of general player tips: #dnd-newcomers message
To those I'd add, "Don't make your fun interfere with anyone else’s.”
D&D is a cooperative and collaborative experience
Be aware that DnD has variant rules and not every single game have the same combination. You can't premade a character and think it will work with every group out there the same.
In the ideal game, everyone is contributing to everyone elses enjoyment of the game; helping each other (including the DM) with rules, sharing the spotlight, working within the expectations of the game as it's set up
I see. So you may have to do more research to simply be able to go through with a game to make sure it works out
Not really research
Just search for a group and talk it out with DM and group, that's the best way ^^
Three Cs of D&D
Communication
Cooperation
Collaboration
It's as much a game of collaboration, communication, and compromise as it is one of imagination and, theoretically, being able to do "anything."
Almost jinx.
i leave on nov 7th for bootcamp and really wanted to try DND but it seems like all the games take place weeks after announcement
bummer
yes, because D&D takes a while to set up
As Davyd mention earlier D&D is a group collaborative game so you have a relationship with the DM and your fellow players. Like any reltionship with other people communication is key because if there is none then that relationship can break down.
In a really good campain group there will be a "Session 0" - a meeting in wich every aspect of playing will be discussed and you can get help to make your chars together
I have ONE more dumb question (for now)
Is it expensive to do it? I hear mixed opinions and I'm not sure what to think
You can play using the free rules.
no money needed 😄
At its most basic level, D&D can be played for free
You can spend lots of money, but that isn't necessary.
i find it a little silly theres paid games
can someone explain to me why that is
Ohhh I see. Okay!! Thanks so much. I'll do my best to find a group or some people
For players it can be free. DMs tend to be the ones who buy and share the books (digital or physical).
Supply and demand. Lots of players, too few DMs. Plus, in theory, a paid game will stick better.
For example, my group has bought almost nothing themselves, I shared everything
As they have gone on to be DMs themselves, they've bought content to share with their players
say you need money for a new book - why not make a pay to play game to get the financial part done?
Because while there are a lot of free resources out there, there are also a lot of tools to improve your games that cost money. If a DM spends their own money to improve the quality of their game, they may want to recieve some compensation for it, like giving gas money to someone that gives you a ride
i guess that makes sense
although its not really a concept in my country so i dont get it
but i can understand it ig
DMing is like putting on a partly-improved stage show, plus props, plus managing the players. If someone does it well, they're probably in-demand. If you have patience, you might find someone willing to do it free, but if you want something specific done well with good material, that's worth paying for.
online plattform to play might cost money, minis, maps, dice...
Do you go to restaurants?
only rich people go to those
Okay, well you can acknowledge that restaurants exist and people go to them rather than cooking for themselves.
Even people who love cooking will go to restaurants
i can understand
A paid DM is like a restaurant; yes you could cook for yourself for free, but sometimes you don't want to
And if you want someone else to cook for you, yes you could go to a friends house and ask them to cook for you, but that's not always possible
So sometimes you go to someone who cooks for you in exchange for money
That's paid DM'ing; it's a luxury service that exists because sometimes people want something, can't get it for free, and are willing to pay for it, so other people will provide that service in exchange for money
As a "forever" DM I front most of the costs -- I own most of the 5E books (physical and digital) and I share them with my players (which means I have to have a D&D Beyond subscription). I've also paid for DM-centric software like Foundry VTT and Dungeon Alchemist map maker. Besides the financial aspect I put in a lot of time prepping, so much so that my wife asked me why I don't charge.
So you can see why these are factors contributing to the lack of DMs. Players can just arrive at the table to table but the DMs may spend several hours prepping before each session.
A common mistake I see a lot of beginners make is that they want to make a character that is the silent loner type, or someone who is reluctant to go on an adventure with the rest of the group. D&D is a team game, about a group of people going on an adventure together. If you make a character that wants to be part of the group or at the very least has a very important reason to be part of the group, it will make the game far more enjoyable for everyone.
i want to have an old wizard with long white beard and a staff that shoots funny lightning bolts.
is this feasible
Sure, that's flavour. Flavour is free.
of course
I'm new to dnd and know the BASICS but I don't know how to get into the game. Especially because my weekends are also filled with work
Wizard is a class
Staff is an arcane focus
Lightning bolt is a spell
Everything else is flavour and flavour is free
Check out #find-a-game
The instructions are all there on how to find games
is that last bit a running gag or something
No, it's a statement about the fact that flavouring your character (how you describe them independent of the rules) doesn't have any 'cost' as far as the rules go
Oooooooo okay!! That makes sense.
You don't have to give up 1 point of Charisma to say your character is grizzled looking, or pay 2 points of Constitution to say they're unkempt
Hi
Im new to dnd and im getting my first Starter set on friday so i wanted to ask if any of yall can help me so i can destroy my friends on friday😅
In which way to destroy?
D&D is a team game, where you work together to fight villains and monsters controlled by the DM. You won't "destroy" your fellow players. They are on your side
PvP isn't really a thing in D&D. The rules weren't designed for that.
Ik i meant id like so i can be better than them
Still, a mindset like that isn't very helpful to team play. But, if you want to make your character as strong as possible, #optimization is the channel to discuss it
Do a Session 0 with you players. Make the characters together and start to discuss why their chars want to journey to a lonly island with a peaceful cloister.
Again, D&D is a group collaborative game. You shouldn't be competing against your teammates.
You will only be a good DM if the players are your heroes and you can make them shine and have fun.
@placid atlas Why do you want to be "better" than your team mates in a cooperative game?
I see that using voice is a very big thing in games, which I understand, but I do not have stable enough Internet to do so.
Any advice?
Look for play-by-post (aka text-based) games?
To play D&D, you need to be able to communicate with the DM and your fellow players. Any method of communication works. Face-to-face, video call, voice call, telephone, text-based, etc.
I understand. I possibly can do that, it just may be a little more on the slow side. Which is what I'm worried about.
Play by post might not even be in realtime ^^ sometimes it's just some couple posts a day
Text-based games are much slower, but for some that's part of the appeal; it can be hard to block out multiple hours every week or so.
PbP games tend to be far more casual, with people answering as they’re available. It moves much slower than in-person or online, but a good one is constantly simmering in the background. It effectively lets you play D&D all the time.
I see. So possibly doing a pbp could be better for a beginner kinda thing? To get used to it before diving in on voice?
Possibly!
If voice isn’t an option for you I think you’d have a better time if you found a group where people don’t need it. PbP games tend to take that option.
Are those kind of groups or something hard to find?
They're a bit rarer than those that use voice, but there are plenty of sites that specialize in it.
There’s plenty out there, and I’m sure you’ll start spotting them more often now that you know the term and acronym.
One thing to be aware of in PbP, there is a learning curve for the commands to use the bots that do the rolling aside from just learning the regular rules, your character, etc.
Google Discord servers doing play-by-post and you'll find plenty
Yeah I generally have the commands open on a second screen
Check out sites like Role Gate, RPG Crossing, Gamers Plane, D&D Beyond's forums, and Reddit's r/pbp.

If I get the spells from sword coast bundle for booming blade on dndbeyond, do I need to own Tasha's for it to be the updated version of booming blade?
I would assume so, but you'd probably get a more complete answer in #ddb-support.
I'll ask in there, thanks.
i got no idea how to play dnd nor the specific classses nor anything but it is fun and there is a dungeon master

Okay. i do really wish my friends i can convince to play dnd was not furious shitposter
Update: it feels weird but i believe it'll be better when there is like 4 people
A typical table has a DM with 3 to 5 players.
i have a small dnd IRL its 2 players and 1 dm
To the linked materials above
how do you determine DC requirement ?
For what?
For spells, it's listed in the spellcasting rules of each individual spellcaster. It's usually {8 + proficiency bonus + Spellcasting ability modifier}
ok so if my DC is 12 their d20 + mod needs to be above 12 to hit me
If they're attacking with a weapon then they will need to roll against your AC (meet or beat)
ok but for magic missile it doesnt require any d20 rolls
Magic Missile is one of the few exceptions that automatically hit.
ok
how would you increase dc
Offensive spells' descriptions will say if they require a spell attack roll or a saving throw.
Meeting the DC = beating the Dc
Easy nemonic is “meets it beats it”
A PC’s save DC is 8 + proficiency + the relevant ability modifier
ok so for witch bolt i only need to land the initial d20 + mod and then every turn after that it automatically hits ?
You increase the Proficiency Bonus and/or increase the appropriate ability modifier.
Increase the modifier and your Dc goes up
Yes, assuming you activate it with the appropriate action/bonus action(i forget, whatever the spell says)
so if you have +5 wisdom, it makes it harder for the target to do a wis save?
If your class uses Wisdom as a modifier for its DC.
As explained above - the DC is calculated with a formula. Increasing one part of it increases the DC.
In your specific question, a wisdom increase would increase your DC if whatever ability or spell you are using is based on wisdom
ohhh okay
Examples would be a Cleric’s spells , which use WIS, or a monk’s stunning strike ability
so warlock, cha
The class feature will specify what ability is used
If you ever wonder what class needs which ability you can check directly in the class description
how does flight work and how do you map it on a board ?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#FlyingMovement
Flying creatures enjoy many benefits of mobility, but they must also deal with the danger of falling. If a flying creature is knocked prone, has its speed reduced to 0, or is otherwise deprived of the ability to move, the creature falls, unless it has the ability to hover or it is being held aloft by magic, such as by the fly spell.
if you play on a grid, there isnt much support for 3D movement, most people I know just work with 5 ft cubes.
without a grid, you just move the distance you want/are allowed
Hello,This is my first time

is only nat 20 considered a critical hit or if you get like 18+ mod6 does that also count as a critical ?
a critical hit on an attack roll is a natural 20 which means 20 on the dice
This is an automatic hit regardless of AC, and you roll double the damage dice for the attack
so would 18 + 2 not be considered a critical?
I encourage you to check out the free basic rules linked above
ok
every nat 20 on an attack is a critical hit, and an automatic hit. this means the the roll on the die. modifiers dont change if you crit or not
See response abov
Hey how long does a game of dnd take?
Do you mean a session or a campaign?
Sorry, what the difference?
A campaign takes place over a longer period of time, made up of sessions which happen typically for 2-4 hours once a week (usually, everyones table is different)
Oh ok
A session is like one episode while a campaign is like a TV series.
Ok thx
is there a monster that can use true polymorph
not that I know of
None that I know off hand, although something like an archmage could easily have that swapped in
There are 2 creatures, I think they are more or less npcs-Arcturia and Scanlan Shorthalt, but most monsters that use similar have false apperance as a disguise, like a mimic or a treant
i just wanted to know cause it would be really funny if you could multilayer true polymorph spells by polymorphing into creatures that could use it. it's not really that useful but it's like a scooby doo mask reveal x4
this isn’t sounding like a D&D newcomer topic though.
I purchased the Young Adventurer's guides, and these are nice as references. They had 4 x books, "Monsters & Creatures" , "Warriors and Weapons" , "Dungeons & Tombs" , and "Wizards & Spells". Are there any good books for young children that have a story format e.g. Dragon of Icespire Peak but in a story format.
Hey hey its my first time in a server like this :3

I’m a brand new player(haven’t even started my first campaign) and would like to create a boxing-inspired character. I wanted to know what class would be most effective for this, and I’m planning on being a human
Monk or fighter (unarmed fighting style) would be options
definitely monk or fighter. At level 1, you might have some trouble keeping up with your fellow party-members, but to each their own. I'm certain other people have made build-guides for unarmed fighters, as well. You can probably find them on youtube
Thank you guys! I’m gonna be starting a new campaign with my best friend so levels shouldn’t be a problem
Yes that is the current version
Either works, assuming you’ve got a group willing to teach you.
But reading the rules or watching a video is something you can do on your own, at your own pace. No need to wait on anyone.
They are not the same
it is highly advisable and for the benefit of your table to also read through the basic rules

I am sort of “new” to DnD, within the last year or so. And I’m making my next character for our new campaign. I decided to become a Dragonborn paladin. I have no idea how Dragonborns work. There’s a few sub races that I’m between choosing. It’s the regular Dragonborn, metallic, or gem. What one of these sub races is the best to use as a Dragonborn?
I've never played dnd brfore but always thought it was interesting and wanted to but i have no idea where to start
Probably a better question for #character-discussion
Have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
Hey I'm new and wanted to try it but don't know were to start what should I do
Look one message above yours
@still forge Im new as well and would be down to try and find a game together if you want
@compact hearth & @still forge that would make me 3rd. Would be keen to find and join a game.
Id love to. Like i said earlier Ive never played before
Hello
Hii so I’ve only ever played one session of dnd but it was loads of fun and I wanted to like actually play it properly but idk how anything rlly works
have you read the basic rules?
have a look at the basic rules then, theyre linked in the pinned messages on this channel
hallooo i am new to dnd and would like to learn more
have a look at the basic rules linked in the pinned messages
Oh btw, I wanted to ask aswell, how do i know what my alignment is? Do I pick it myself?
you choose it
I see I see, okay thanks
I feel like this is such a stupid question to ask but, can fighters also use Bo Staff?
they can use quarterstaves, which you could call a bo staff
anyone can use any weapons, but you need proficiency in a weapon to use it well
luckily, fighters are proficient in all weapons

Haha sorry for the constant questions, I'm making my character rn I actually just finished with my background
all g
Uhh, so basically that question was kinda unnecessary cuz I decided on a Jade Spear
so a reflavoured spear?
Why doesn’t dndbeyond let me pick artificer
It like doesn’t show up in the class selection
wait i still dont get what that means
do u mean like, my spear is custom or smth?
basically reflavouring is describing something differently, but mechanically its the same
artificer is the only class that isnt available for free
It’s not in the basic rules but you can buy individual stuff for 1.99
bc its not in the basic rules, it was released in a later book
no, that would be piracy
its not bs as well, consider it less as a videogame adjacent site, and more as a digital library
Dnd isn’t like a physical thing I thought
it is
