No it's not
If you are hidden, you get advantage when you attack. It's called the unseen attacker rule
True rogues speciality
You could try too take down a enemy tho like that but I don't recommend it
It's grapple basically is what your saying? I guess
No
What role would that even be
no not advantage, i want my opponent to die instantly since no one can survive a knife to the throat
There's no 'die instantly' attack
Because you would have too like what unharm attack?
I know there isn't it's just like how would that work too attempt it
I was replying to EsK3r
Oh okay. Sorry.
Hm DND dosnt really work like that or everyone would play rogue
still you have the risk of being seen
You can aim for a specific body part I'm pretty sure ? If I'm not mistaken? But isn't it disadvantage I don't really remember the aim for part rule for DND
No
No, there are no called shots in D&D 5th edition
Oh yeah it's a homebrew thing nvm
I remember a player wanting it in one of my campaigns
This is #dnd-newcomers try to stick to the basic rules as it’s confusing to people
so the only thing i can do is just roll with advantage?
Or play a rogue
Depends ?
What did I miss newcomer chat
You can scroll back and catch up
i am a rogue
Then you have sneak attack
i think in situations where 1 v 3+ (its a one on one campaign), being able to make quick work of atleast one of them is a real big benefit. just a personal opinion tho
You might wanna ask over in #character-discussion
i still dont understand it, ive read the PHB but i dont get that how it can be used effectivly
What lvl rogue are you and what subclass
lvl 1
Lowering enemies is pretty much always beneficial no matter the situation
Also while yeah stabbing someones throat would be pretty much a near instant kill, but how dnd's attacks work is more abstract in a sense, where you roll for success, and maybe if you get a critical hit and manage to kill them in one hit by surprise, then sure no reason not to describe the attack like stabbing their throat, but orherwise the attack just didnt hit as vital of a spot, or missed completely
Ok so you only get sneak attack if an ally is next to your target or you have advantage on your attack. As you’re the only PC you will either have to hide or use steady aim
I probably explained that pretty terribly but the point should be there lol
so.. maybe a crit for a stealth takedown is an instant kill, is that any better?
It does more damage
hiding gives advantage? didnt know that
wait what? when?
here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat look at the bit on unseen
oh, didnt know unseen and hiding were the same, my bad
I wasn't suggesting any special mechanics, that would fall under #homebrew and something to discuss with the DM
I was just mentioning how dnd portrays attacks/damage, and that you rarely, if ever, have ways to negatively affect someone that automatically succeeds (but also in exchange its also rare for you to be subject to that)
Hi! so im new to d&d entirely but i want to start playing. how do i start?
Well I'd recommend giving the free basic rules a read through: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Then maybe watch some folks playing D&D via YouTube/Twitch streams.
Maybe try creating a character and see how that works.
Then find a group to start playing with.
See also the pinned message here in the channel for some useful resources to help get you started.
How about creating a monster?
theres a few video game enemies id want to convert into dnd enemies but theyre not typical creatures
also what are the most popular online formats? i follwoed the link on how to play online dnd, but which one will have the most potential to find a game?
Start with reskinning an existing monster before you try to create a new monster from scratch, especially if you're new to D&D (you don't know what's balanced for a CR 1 or CR 20 monster).
Much easier to take the stat block of a Tiger and call it a Giant Housecat then to build a new creature from the ground up!
Dang it
Sentients from Warframe shall have to wait
Although I did figure they would be classified as Construct
Once again, you can still run those in your game no problem! Just look up some existing Constructs and give them a different name
For sure. Im realtively new, I just wanted to make the enemies for fun.
Thanks!
I mean if I can share the image of a Conculyst, I think they would fit in a fantasy setting.
If what you're interested in is the NPC building process, check out #homebrew. No guarantee your players survive though 😂
Oh i cant post images. whoops
Again, what is the best online format? My schedule is kinda crazy so I cant do in person, and theres no local groups anyway.
What do you mean by format, exactly?
I used the looking for dm command in find a game but no thread was posted
How long do campaigns typically last? For example if you’re following the premade adventures, can you link multiple of those together so your characters go from level 1 up to say 12-15?
I’ve seen some groups finish a campaign in weeks. I’m up to a few years for mine as life gets in the way.
Premade adventures might be hard to link up, because you need to match the ending level of 1 to the starting level of another. Its certainly possible, and there are a few that are made as direct sequals to each other, like Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage, but it would be tough to say, beat Dragon Heist, which goes from level 1 to 5, and then transition into Lost Mines of Phandelver, which is made for level 1 characters
For home-made adventures, that's impossible to say. It depends on the DM, the story they want to tell, and the group's preferred playstyle
My longest campaign was about 7 years total, but my brother's been in one that's been going on for almost 20. It depends on how often you meet up, how long between level-ups, and how much your group gets done every session.
Cool. Thanks y’all
it's not the campaign that gets in the way of life, it's life that gets in the way of your campaign
Double check that your Discord app is up to date (may need to reinstall it because Discord is like that sometimes) and then can you try running the command again?
This might be a dumb question, but Ill ask it anyway. Regarding backpacks. I understand from a role play perspecitive why a backpack is necessary to carry all my gear, but I currently have a character who, for reasons, started out in the world with nothing but the clothes on his back and a silver coin. This character has no backpack. After an encounter with a merchant wagon, he now has about 10 items in his inventory, but still no backpack. So my question is this: Is it necessary, as a rule, to have a packpack or some kind of item container? Because the character sheet on D&D Beyond allowed me to have these items in my inventory without one.
Ask your DM how they want you to handle it as that sounds very game/group specific
Solo play, so I guess its up to me?
But the game rules do not require you to have a backpack if that's what you're asking.
Ok, thanks!
D&D is a roleplaying game, so one of the key governing rules is "Would/could my character do this?"
If you want to carry more than a few things, your character would need some kind of pack
If you want more realism I'd probably figure out some way of carrying the items you have beyond "lugging it around in my arms" as that doesn't make a whole lot of sense for an adventurer.
I think ill put an encumberence limit on myself until I get one.
Yes he is walking around town with a lamp, a 10' pole, and a merchants scale tucked under his arms lol. Not suspicious at all!
I have two questions-
- Im not too familar with all the races- but is there a race that has the body of a human and animal ears/tail? Im trying to bring my Charakter from a Roleplay (not from dnd) into dnd as my first character and he his a fox human, is there any race that fits that?
- This server is english only im aware of that, my english is fine but i dont know the meaning of too complicated words- is that gonna be a problem?
So if anything, look at the items you have and ask yourself, "is there a way I can carry this stuff with what I have right now? Do I have a belt some of these things can be slipped into or hooked onto? Do I have rope or something similar?" Just gotta think outside the box to find the solution. If there is none, then yeah you may be in a pickle. Even if there is a solution, is it effective? Will it make it difficult for you to do other things like fight? Roleplay it out, even if it is a solo play, you can resolve these problems with a little puzzle solving and hardy spirit
- There is a shifter race that you could use and flavor that way.
- Communication issues are always problematic but I wouldn't overly worry about it. We will do our best to understand you as long as you're making a genuine effort.
As a simple solution, a backpack costs 2g from a general goods list
Yea my character made it to a small town right at night fall, so he went to an inn first for a quick meal and to sleep. When I pick things back up I plan to visit the local trade shop. Hopefully there is something there I can use as a pack of some kind. I was just curious if it was a game rule, since the character sheet didnt limit my inventory without one.
Hey, if anyone is down to help me with the basics of designing a character that would be cool
Yea, was just asking if anyone had suggestions I could build off of. Since players will ultimately have the best experience to give better advice
Why not roll some dice? Randomly pick a race and class and go from there?
Great idea, thanks for the advice
you're welcome, good luck
hey there

Cross your fingers! It's unlikely a game is going to be available within the same day, but maybe you'll get lucky!
The #looking-for-community might be the best bet to find a same-day game as many of them may be running a D&D game in the Westmarch style where there's no set party or DM but when folks decide they want to play they throw togetehr a group, find an available DM, and start playing.
should i choose the "looking for communuty" option?
nice
That would be other D&D servers and they may have D&D games running at any time. Might be worth checking out.

FOXY FROM FNAF?!?
What’s the best way to for players to keep track of leveling with a paper character sheet? I’m a new DM with new players so I’m not sure how best to handle that do they need new sheets every level?
Are you using xp
I was planning on just leveling at certain points in the adventure
I believe the module I’m using has points where each character levels
Best way, are you using dndbeyond for character?
I want to but the problem is it’s a 3rd party module with different races
Ah well your options are hand write the new abilities in or use an editable pdf character sheet
You could also recreate those as homebrew races in D&D Beyond. (Just don’t publish them to the global community if they’re not your own original creation.)
Yep!
You can make a copy of any official race/spell/etc. as a starting point, too, or just to see how they’re set up.
Is there a guide for that somewhere I’ve never used it other than just messing around
And #ddb-support can lend a hand if you get stuck.
Sweeeeet thanks!
I sincerely and genuinely appreciate being credited, but could you make sure to spell the name right? That way any feedback can go to me and not someone else!
Animals druids have as familiars are limited by the find familiar spell, correct?
Assuming you are referring to the Wild Companion optional class feature from Tasha's Cauldron, then yes. That feature simply allows you to cast Find Familiar, so you must still follow all of its normal rules, aside from duration and materials needed
I had edited it auto correct wanted to call you I’m Ian taser 🤷
im too lazy to print a character sheet, can i just draw it on regular notebook pages?
That's the old school way!
well any layouts that you reccomend? cuz the default character sheet doesnt fit in my notebook
The point of a character sheet is to keep track of the information that's important to playing your character in a simple and easy to use way. They are not a required part of the rules. Just a tool for making the game easier. If you want to keep track of that information in a different way, you are fully within your rights to do so.
alrighty
I still don't understand d&d
I've never played a game
me neither
If it makes you feel better 🙂
I'm just learning 🙂
Do you need anything specific clarified? I can try and help !
Uh, how about I'll contact you after reading the begginers guide?
no worries
I think like most people, I’m happy to help whenever
THat's cool that ya'll are so helpful
I already love dnd community 😄
I have the players manuel, the stormwreck isle game, and dice, but that doens't mean i know anything
I just got here today but I’ve been playing for over 2 years now
I can try and help the best I can
Also going through the beginners guide now but before joining a party, do I need to have a character already set up? Lol I have that intrinsic need to (unintentionally) make things difficult by wanting to make characters that aren't in every edition
I don't have any equipement, tbh I'm hoping to play online 😭
How did you find your first game?
I did it in a server I was in
Someone offered to DM
My first campaign I found through college
It depends on what your DM wants
Communication with your DM is one of the most important parts of DND
On another discord server? Is it better in person or online?
I might drag my friends into the hell of begginer in dnd to then becoem a DM for them :evil_laughter:
It can depend but I always vouch for in person
It feels a lot smoother to do
AA
light mode jumpscare from the begginers guide
tbh, I think dnd is fun, but the hell is just understanding the basics
Certianly makes sense
I really want to make things easier on the DM by having something ready for them. Would you recommend having a backstory or a general guideline instead of stats?
I would say have a character and backstory ready
But don’t flesh it out too much because your DM may want to discuss things with you
Lmao fair point, thank you
Yeah np! It’s a good rule of thumb that you can always add specific details after establishing the general backstory
But get your ideas down
And don’t be afraid to ask questions
why is the begginers guide on lighty mode 😭
I have like dark mode on discord, switching to it is fr a jumpscare 😭
luckly almond mode isn't on 💀
Oh mobile has it on dark still for me 😭
Kenkus obviously aren't the best to play with but would it be possible if they were a paladin for them to speak using what their deity says to them?
For future when proficient at all-
I have almond mode (aka ultra dark mode) on mobile 😭
You'd have to ask your DM!
One of the newer books gives options for Kenkus to talk like normal as well, to make it easier on the player
That is something you can discuss with your DM
Because rules can always be bent, but it’s up to the discretion of the DM
books?!
BOOKS?!
Supplements, is perhaps the better word. All DnD supplements have physical versions, in the form of books
Oh perfect!!!
Yea someone somewhere said they had the raven queen bless all kenkus in their universe it's cool little accomodations like that
It's called the Player's Handbook for a reason 😉
like security logbook? (from FNAF)
Nope! The core source of rules material in DnD is called the Player's Handbook.
Except not a pile of inaccuracies
Think of it as the full set of rules that the Basic Rules is based on
We're talking about FNAF, the lore is a puzzle 😭
aight 😄
is 200 pages enough to journal the whole campaign?
btw what's the "pride"-class in the discord?
200?! HUH WHAT
yes 200
holy sh-
When you can’t get animatronic behavior and stuff correctly in a book (which is programming) that’s a real problem lmao
its a class that takes pride in its work
It’s for members of the LGBTQ+ community I’m guessing
The logbook is based on what Michael Afton saw, there are some things in the book that are actual lore, like the drawings of the nightmares, what if it wasn't C.C who dealt with the nightmares but it's Mike who did?
Sorry for my uhh, crazyness in the fnaf lore?
Where can I play a game I'm new

Spread your net wide dont just look here
@trail yacht sorry for the ping but, yk at the beginners guide?
I don't really understand ch.1 step 2.2&2.3
||link if needed https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#2ChooseaClass||
Gimme one second to read no worries about pinging
What you struggling with? Ability scores?
so in addition to picking a dnd race, you will also pick a dnd class
each has their own specialties
hit points and hit dice are your HP
each class uses a specific dice to determine how much HP they have
a proficiency bonus is added to your skill checks, attack rolls (for both hitting and determining damage)
ability scores decide your stats
there are 6 stats (as written in the book), and you will have numbers to assign to them
depending on the number, you will get a positive or negative modifier to add to your rolls that pertain to the stat (or sometimes it will just be zero)
at step 3 there's something about subtracting with 10 and then deviding by 2? what's that about?
That's calculating the modifier bonus.
that's how you get your modifier for your stat
so say you are trying to persuade an NPC to do something for you
you would need to roll, and you would add your charisma modifier to it
so like if you have a 12 in charisma, you add +1 to charisma rolls
there's this example of building a character, it's for a fighter, it says strenght: 17 (+3), what's the +3 about?
that's the modifier
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. It'll be easier to digest than readin the walls of text in the Basic Rules (but you should still read the rules for the detail).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
There's an interactive character sheet further down this page you might find helpful to look at too: https://dnd.wizards.com/further-resources
@celest beacon Jocat (a youtuber) makes simple, fun animated guides to DND in his series "a crap guide to DND": https://youtu.be/IVAJrYOOtwI
if you need extra help and want something to watch
No, don't watch that video. You'll get more confused. A lot of the humour assumes you already know D&D and a new player would be confused and he talks at a break neck pace that would be hard for non-native English speakers.
I watch this till 5 seconds, I see a sheet and I was like "wtf is that sh-"
that's fair
i got confused i think bc the other videos on like class and stuff were helpful for me
Stick with "Handbooker Helper"
i figured all of them would be helpful
There's a reason why it's called "Crap guide to D&D." It's more for entertainment than education.
...it did help me
that's why i suggested it
sorry that its confusing for people
100% not my intention
@trail yacht the video you suggested mentions a checkmark at 6:03, could you explain what it's for? (I'm so dumb I'm sorry 😭)
what's a hermit
that is for your proficiencies
each class will tell you what stats you are naturally proficient in
on your character sheet, you will mark them with that checkmark and add your proficiency bonus
Hello! Me and my gaming club are going to start a dnd campaign, can someone help me with making a character sheet?
I have never played.
are you filling out a PDF version, writing it on a paper version or completing it on a site like D&D Beyond?
Teaching someone to make a character is pretty time intensive. Here's a good video guide to the process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcNgj0KPYuA
Uh, we start making characters and stuff on Friday with paper, but I wanted to go ahead and get a character all filled out.
this one was also recommended above:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Okay thanks, go on beyond then print a sheet out
dnd beyond is super helpful because it does a lot of the math for you
For what specifically?
Just like, newcomers in general since I have never played.
Just to learn the basics.
Handbooker Helper is an excellent overview.
They just linked video tutorials above.
Okay thanks.
WASD20 also has a series, Rules School, where he covers the basics.
You can also have the beginner txt on dndbeyond to help too
Very useful advice and I wasn't even the one asking the question, thanks
total noob here!

What does this mean?
1d12+4
so 1 dice 1-12 +4? so max 16, min 5?
Yep
ohh
ty
You roll a d12 die then add 4
Is that german?
Yes, that's german. Hieb - Hit, Zustandsbedir - Conditional
Can your character be a pirate? i have seen in 5e that one of the classes was pirate but i’m not sure 😞
There's no "pirate" class, however, you can be one as part of your character background (use the Sailor background). Of course, talk with your DM what their setting is. If their setting takes place in a hot desert then being a seafaring pirate may be pointless.
Pretty sure they mean "Swashbuckler", if not there is a pirate "background" which may be confusing.
You can be a rogue with the swashbuckler sub-class.
Its a good rule in life, not just with people and D&D.
UGAH sorry i got timed out 😛
anyway, that’s kind of upsetting bc my character IS a pirate currently 😞 i might have to redo his entire story
Work with your DM if it fits within their campaign setting.
i would bro, but my DM doesn’t exist 😛
My wife plays as a pirate 😄 Though, the rest of the group don't know it yet...as mentioned above, the Sailor background is appropriate, and the Swashbuckler class is very fitting - but really you could be a pirate and build it as a Fighter, Ranger...heck realy any class, depending on the setting. However, as said, once you find your DM it will be something to discuss with them. A criminal past isn't a hard thing to write around, but "evil" characters can be a real challenge to make work.
great information, im probably gonna remember that
that sounded so mean i’m so sorry
Not sure if there's a better place to ask this, but I'm just wondering why Death Cleric's get access to martial weapons? I'm Dex based due to medium armour, so I'm wondering what I should be keeping my eye out for weapon wise beyond a Rapier?
I don’t know if anybody here has an inside track on why design decisions were made. As for the other question, I’d say that’s a good one for #character-discussion.
Yeah the most we have to go on is the flavour text: "The Death domain is concerned with the forces that cause death"
Rapier is the best finesse weapon for one-weapon play - and of course, longbow for if you need a non-magical ranged weapon (but really, your cantrips will probably be better). More importantly, discuss your weapon aspirations with your DM. It's perfectly fine and normal to take the stats of a Rapier, but call it something more flavoursome. Maybe your chosen God has a thing for scythes, and so you want to call it a one-handed scythe?
Is a gm literally allowed to change rules or is that just something people do
A GM decides what rules are in effect at any given situation in the game and may establish homebrew rules to best accommodate the kind of game they and the group want to play.
That said changes in rules are best done with the consensus and agreement of everyone playing.
Does the handbook say that or anywhere officially or the community just does that to make it more fun
The rules on running the game give the GM/DM lots of latitude on how to run the game, including changing rules to meet the needs of the game.
But the principal behind it is to ensure the game is fun.
You’re looking for a rule to say its ok to bend the rules?
For gms yea cuz it everyone says its allowed
Here’s the inventor of D&D:
In any case fantasy is a growing and flexible form of gaming, and referees must feel at home modifying and expanding upon rules as the situation dictates.
– Gary Gygax, Dungeons & Dragons Swords & Spells (1976), Introduction.
Introduction to the DM’s Guide:
The D&D rules help you and the other players have a good time, but the rules aren’t in charge. You’re the DM, and you are in charge of the game.
Player’s handbook, introduction:
Because there is so much diversity among the worlds of D&D, you should check with your DM about any house rules that will affect your play of the game. Ultimately, the Dungeon Master is the authority on the campaign and itssetting, even if the setting is a published world
Then is nothing considered cheating if the gm allows it?
Is there a way for newcomers like myself to get into playing d&d if we dont know anyone who can dm for us? Been wanting to get into d&d for like 3 years now but idk how to get started cuz i dont know anyone who can dm yet
It's a socially collaborative game - "cheating" at best is stating your dice rolls are different then they actually are in most cases. You're supposed to be having fun with friends - it's not about "beating" others or the DM playing the game.
Basically yeah!
The rules are more like safety nets for DMs to fall back on
There is the #find-a-game here in the discord
do the people in here expect you to have any understanding of the game outside of the fact you have dice rolls and classes tho
basically what i know is what ive learned through bg3 and other similar games which isnt a whole lot atm
Check out the pinned message in the channel here.
I’ve only been here a day but I expect no??? You just need to communicate with whoever is your DM
They should meet you at your level
Most groups are fine taking on new to the game players as long as you show your willingness to learn and play your character and fit well with the rest of the group.
Oh id 100% take it seriously and try to have a good time, im not the kind of person to just screw around and waste peoples time
bg3 has really made me wanna get into d&d as id guess is the same for many others
Then it should be fine! And you should be able to learn with whoever you’re playing with :)
The D&D you play should be a collaborative experience, which means conmunicating expectations and agreeing on guidelines, and more importantly, agreeing to get along and have fun
If your table is ok with something , it ok
Bad faith Deceit, insults, antagonizing - thats what you dont do
With those things in mind there is no need to “cheat”
Yeah it’s just constant communication between everyone involved
And let me tell you, having played this game for some time, I still mess up rules and forget stuff - so don't feel like you have to memorize the rules or anything of the sort. Knowing how to read and find the rules? That's good. Memorizing the rules - not necessary.
^
Is online d&d still a good experience like if you were to play in person? i imagine its quite a bit different and that in person would be more fun but i can also see online d&d being more accessible
D&d Is the experience of being together on an adventure, if everyone is having a good time that’s “winning”
With that in mind, the only cheating is acting against that goal
It can depend
Some people thrive online, some people thrive doing in person
It’s your preference tbh
i see
There is no replacement for sitting at a table with friends (new or old)
That said, in 2023, the reality is that it’s not possible to always do that but it is possible and more convenient for folks to play online
Yeah 100%
I prefer in person but I can see the merits of doing it online
Have you never gone to a ballgame or any event with friends? It will never be the same as a Zoom meeting or video game
Heck even old LAN parties at the ol’ college dorm
There are many different ways to play D&D - there is something nice about playing in person but sometimes that just isn't possible. Fortunately online communication tools and Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) have come a long way and have helped make online D&D play something relatively easy to accomplish.
One thing about online is that there are some great free resources to use
would there be anything i need before i can get started online or no?
like maybe some program or web page, so on
Find a group first - that will determine what tools will be used.
Yeah everyone uses smth different
ah so its not just one specific thing i see
Hi, I'm new here. Just wanted to say hello 🙂
that does raise another question, do some games not allow certain classes
Hi
Yeah no 100% virtual tabletops have come a long way
Hello!!
Generally they allow all classes, artificer is sometimes restricted
Are we talking official classes, or stuff people have made outside of the official game and rules?
my understanding of artificer is they create super op items and it often times messes up game balance but i also dont know a whole ton about them nor am i interested in playing as one
I mean I’ve heard of subclasses getting banned in sessions/campaigns but not straight up classes
Nope that’s not the issue
just the official ones
They’re not op, they just are more tech-focused which doesn’t work in some settings
ah
Not really no
Once again, some people will say “don’t use certain subclasses”
gotcha
Like I’ve heard of peace clerics getting banned from sessions
is gloom stalker a thing outside of bg3
It’s mainly just artificer and some subclasses like peace cleric or maybe eloquence bard
Yeah that’s a Ranger subclass
Sometimes Dungeon Masters will limit certain choices to ensure a balance to the game and what makes sense for the setting and game they are running. But they'll explain that and their reasons rather than "I hate that race or class and you can't play it" (usually).
Yep and it’s a pretty good ranger subclass
ok so imma take a guess here and say all of the bg3 classes are a thing in d&d and not bg3 specific
Generally I think so
That sounds about right
There are some DMs who run low magic games and may ban some magic classes but that should be pretty clear from the start
well ill have to look into this more later, almost at max level in bg3 so im guessing crazy stuff will happen soon and i dont want to put the game down cuz of it lmao
Yeah DMs will say what isn’t allowed usually before characters are even fully made
thanks for answering all of my question guys i do appreciate it
What’s funny is that BG3 doesn’t even hit the max DND level hehe
oh i know that much
I played a level 20 character a solid one time and it was terrifying
i got to witness the wish spell in game and its kind of terrifying to think about what it can do
Oh that and like
Power word kill
i heard most d&d games end around level 10, is that true?
I’ve never heard of that
Maybe though?
i was reading something about it earlier today, not sure where i saw it though
i wanna get to level 11 and use chain lightning if im playing a sorcerer though lel
Yes because most games start lvs 1-3 and meeting consistently long enough to reach upper levels is hard
I always like starting level 3 idk if that’s just me
it is faster to level up in Adventurer’s League tho
oh so the game doesnt always start at level 1 i see
Nope
The DM decides the starting level
cool
Also I have heard multiple people saying that playing/dming at really high levels isn’t very fun sometimes
A one-shot may start at high level, for example
Well I feel like combat becomes very extensive because there is so much to do
along with my d&d craving i started watching critical role to see more what its like and im watching campaign 2 atm, it seems so fun i cant wait to try it
i imagine most dms wont be the same as him but im not expecting anyone to be either
Everyone has 39374893 actions and spells that all affect the battle field with persistent effects and advantage/disadvantage on everything and summons and 2937893 familiars
Dimension 20 is also good as a DND podcast
Same with NADDpod
Critical Role is a very specific form of D&D that does not replicate real life:
- a professional DM w/ specific homebrew
- dwarven forge sponsorship
- players all professional actirs who spend hours on deep character work knowing their campaign will last 3 years
- custom built set with variable lighting
- decades of friendship which allows greater leeway in what is allowed between players
That’s very true yeah
yeah exactly
im dragging my friends into this as soon as i can cuz i know all of them want to try d&d but we dont know a dm
Campaign 1 probably more closely replicates real dnd
They were in a closet at Geek and Sundry on folding tables, matt was hand drawing maps on graph paper, everyone was switching from pathfinder so they didnt know rules , nobody had IPads with d&d beyond loaded on there, maybe 1.5 production staff and terrible equipment
would be cool to find a dm for us in here cuz theres like 4-6 of us who would play if we knew one
Yeah that’s more like how a DND session actually is
Good luck finding a DM !!
They used paper character sheets and books, now they all have tablets. But some still use the paper character sheet. Marisha was writing stuff down with dry erase
C1 battlemap: construction paper and some doodles
C3 battlemap: multiple layers, buildings with full interiors, lighting rigs, smoke effects, hand painted minis, lava shooting from volcanos, etc
Im not even sure they all had minis to begin with
My partner (he’s the DM for my friends and I) just recently got a grid map for combat
Before we just hand drew on either paper, or a whiteboard
We should probably let the chat get back to newcomer questions... 😉
o7
o7 to u aswell CMDR
Is a Silvanus Cleric, Warlock, or Paladin possible in DND?
It depends on if the world you’re playing in has that god
It would be a cleric probably
Nature domain cleric would fit best
Hello! My friends and i are planning to play dnd for the first time! the thing is that no one wants to be DM so i have to do it. Any advice on how to be a good one?
Hi I'm gonna a be joining my college's Tabletop club once clubs officially open on my campus in a week or so. I've never played before and I'm not great in social situations. Is there anything I should keep in mind when I show up or anything I should be wary of? I've got my own dice and some character concepts but I'm super nervous
Make sure to always communicate with your players
Have a time set aside before you guys start playing dnd to talk about expectations, general character stuff, rules, triggers, etc.
you want to show that you care
Also please use character backstories if they are given to you
They can enhance the world so much
As someone who went to his dnd club at his college campus, just be careful of who you play with
Dnd, like any game, can bring in sketchy people
The officers (or whatever the student government for the club is) are there to help and facilitate a safe and fun environment
Most of it will probably be one shots, but there may be some people doing campaigns outside of the club
If you want a smaller group, I would try to do a campaign outside of the club
Don’t be nervous because everyone is going to have similar passions and interests
It should be a safe space and people should naturally form their own groups
You just gotta step a lil outside your comfort zone to find your people
And if you don’t find them, that’s ok! Opportunities are endless in college
This is my generic DM advice: #dnd-newcomers message
I could add a bunch more, but it’s a good starting place. You get better by doing it and by listening to as much advice as you can. Don’t follow it all; just collect it and test it out, see what works for you.
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. I'm fine with one shots and just getting a feel for it. I've been wanting to play for years. The whole reason I joined the server was to find a group or do a couple one shots first before going in but then I kept chickening out and putting it off. Figured it'd be a lot easier to get myself to put foot through the door seeing and being with people physically. Even if for a little bit.
So about sneak attacks, can you, in combat, as a rogue, run somewhere out of sight, hide, then sneak attack next turn, either via range, or sneaking up behind and meleeing, then run away out of sight, hide, and repeat?
Is “hidden” considered an advantage
If the environment/DM allows it.
Advantage is a term in the rules
Because if so then technically you just need to run away and hide via cunning action right
Being hidden from an enemy can give you advantage
I believe we’re doing mostly vanilla
It’s still dm dependent
It’s up to your dm if the environment lets you be concealed from an enemy
But if I am concealed, then it counts as advantage provided there is no rule change?
Yep.
Yes
So as a rogue I can abuse sneak attacks once I get the double bonus action
I don’t know if abuse is the right word. Sneak attack is one of the strengths of the rogue, so you’d want to make it happen as often as possible.
Fast hands?
Or did I read the thing wrong
That isn’t how that feature works.
That just lets you use your existing bonus action to pick a lock
You only ever get one bonus action
It even says “use the bonus action granted by your Cunning Action”
Cunning action* thats what I meant
So I would have to hide somewhere within 9m and use the cunning action to hide?
Sneak attack (action)
Move
Hide (bonus action)
End turn
That’s pretty standard for using a rogue, yeah.
As it says, it lets you do that stuff as a bonus action
But does it eat the bonus action
yes
you can use your bonus action to perform one of the cunning actions: hide, dash, disengage
As opposed to using an entire action
yes
The fast hands feature from the thief subclass lets you use your bonus action to pick a lock instead
You have a bonus action and an action
You can use your bonus action to do some things, and your action to do other things
A bonus action is just an action that is used for different stuff
Oh
So if I wanted to get more out of the hit and run strat I guess I pick up mobile as a feat to increase movement distance?
Say the hiding spot isn’t within 9m
That’s one option.
And the other is picking up gear I presume
Or multiclassing, though I wouldn’t recommend that for a new player.
If you’re looking for character optimization we have #optimization but this channel is for new to D&D folks.
How hard is it to actually pull off repeated sneak attacks
Will enemies just constantly look at the spot i’m hiding in
You don’t have to hide
Sneak attacks can be as easy to achieve as having an ally within 5 feet of the target
If there’s an ally of yours near the enemy as well you can get a sneak attack
So if you have a frontliner attacking the enemy you can get free sneak attacks
So enemies in 5e have a frontal vision cone only?
It’s more that they’re focused on the ally
Oh
Don’t try and think about vision cones, the rules really don’t take that into account
About popping out of cover to do a sneak attack, if its “looking” at the area i’m in and I come out of hiding to shoot/stab, am I still “hidden”
You lose the hidden status when you attack.
Even if its looking directly at me
So do I only lose advantage after performing an attack
It’s a game and I wouldn’t get too focused on realism and physics simulation- it’s abstracted and the point is to have fun.
The rules don’t take into account where someone is “looking”
You should read the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#UnseenAttackersandTargets
There aren’t really rules on looking, but there are rules for whether a creature can see you or not:
- They can automatically see you if they have the right senses eg darkvision in dark areas
-As an action, you can hide , rules for hiding are at https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/5e_SRD:Hide_Action
-If a creature doesn’t know you are there, you can make a Dex(Stealth) check to see if they can see you or not
Um hi...
Hi
RAW, level 4
If your dm let’s you take a free feat at first level, or lets you take that feat without being an elf or half elf, then at level 1
Well clerics don’t use charisma
Oh....0_0
But either way under the Tasha’s rules you can change the ability score increases
Wisdom?
So you can make any race/class combo work
Yep
I just like the idea of a cleric that does goat things xD
"Come friend let me heal your BAHHHHH wounds....
Yeah that sounds great
How do I join a game 0w0
Once you think you’re ready, we have the #find-a-game channels to help with finding a game
No luck yet
It’ll take a while
Does it take long to learn dnd rules?
Ik it’s 3am but how does a artificer work with spells and cantrips?
It’s standard spellcasting rules
Oh huh istg someone told me it’s based on item infusion or something
Well the basics shouldn’t take too long but I don’t think it’s humanly possible to memorise it all
Item infusions are a seperate ability they get
How much spell slot do artificers start with
hiiii im new lmao

ah oki
I recommend starting with the Handbooker Helper videos, it will make understanding the basic rules a little easier.
alright
my friend just sorta told me to learn as i play
after helping me make a char
It's true, you'll mostly entrench it through practice, but it's worth having a bit of a read, and at least knowing where to look things up
Not planning on playing with your friend, then?
they were going to start one
but uh its been about 2 years since they even thought about it
i gave em the idea again recently tho they dont seem as keen as they were back then
:p
Anyone have any tips on how to make a character
Do you know the basic rules on character creation? Or you just after help with a character concept
Yeah dndbeyond is based on the basic rules

I have a few pre made sheets and the rule book
But I wanted to make different characters from the pre made sheets
Do you have an idea f what you want to make?
Yeah a monk but I don’t know the races
Hey dndbeyond and the free basic rules and it will hve the free races on there
What are some fun one shots? No horror not a ton of puzzles just fun
Wild sheep chase which you can get on https://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/170937
I know about tht one I’m actually in the middle of playing it
The official anthologies can be a lot of fun: Candlekeep Mysteries is one I have, and it's pretty great. Keys to the Golden Vault is also fun, but it's a lot more puzzle-y by virtue of being heist-based.
I was trying to read the book of raven one in candlekeep it was confusing me
I like ones that tell me exactly what to say and when
A dm has to be creative sometimes
I hear that Tales from the Yawning Portal is good, but I haven't read it myself.
Is anyone running a game on Sunday or Monday I've never played ....

Hello everyone
Hello, I am new here and have played it once a long time ago. I am looking for a beginner friendly campaign and someone that can walk me through the basics of DnD. 🙂
Hi I go to a dnd club but i would like to play a lot more campaigns. I'm new but I'm cool with beginner friendly or just an average campaign 🙂
I played it once when my buddies invited me over and I was thinking that "This is probably the most nerdiest shit I've heard" but then I got interested when they said I could bludgeon a goblin with a mace
I'm still technically new to it
Hello all, long time Dungeon Master here who took a hiatus over the last year only to have all my old players confide in me that they miss the game...
So here I am trying to absorb all I can and get the old infernal engines cooking again.
this is very selfie, but can i ask someone to hand hold me into dnd?

Is there a beginners guide to making a character?
I have one in mind but I know we need a sheet of some sort
You can use D&D Beyond but, I think you need to have bought the books. I don't use it personally. I use roll20. If you have Roll20, I can invite you to my test game, you can use the charactermancer to create a character using my compendium and then download it to your character vault.
Is roll20 free?
I know a little about Dnd but have nothing for it. No books, boards, figurines, etc
Yes, except the compendium I spoke about meant I bought the books on roll20 so I could use the library. You can create a sheet without them but, for new players the charactermancer is the easiest way. I use it all the time because it's just quicker.
Alrighty I’ll do that later today. Stuck at work right now
What’s your idea for a PC you might be able to do it with the basic rules
anyone got a campaign for first time players
#find-a-game may be some in #looking-for-players
Ah yeah, I've had the books so long I'm not sure what the default offers anymore. @mellow spade might be possible without my compendium if your character is from the PhB.
Speaking of the find-a-game channels it'd be nice if they were split by region. It's a massive headache scrolling through them all trying to find ones that are in your timezone.
couldn't find any tbh

I'm having trouble understanding spell save DC from what I've read
Specifically, is this something I have to roll or is it just static based on the calculation?
I can give the scenario if that helps clarify 😄
No the monster/dm rolls it
DCs are static, and not rolled.
But saves/checks are rolled by the creature attempting to beat the DC.
So if a spell DC is 13 and the Save is Dexterity, then the target needs to make a dex save 13 or higher to succeed. Spells say if anything happens on success (like half damage) but usually have no affect on a success
If dc is said to be dc10+spell lvl, then if third level spell is being casted. The dc to beat the spell is 13
To make that save, the target rolls a d20 and adding their dex modifier and their proficiency bonus if proficient in dex saves (granted by class or noted in their stat block)
That's not how it works in 5e
Eh? Then someone explained counterspelling wrong way to me
A casters Spell DC is either noted in their stat block, or is determined by class/feature.
Typically it is Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your (spellcasting ability) modifier
A player character's spell save DC is set by 8 + proficiency bonus + spellcasting attribute modifier
Yeah waht Elgate noted.
Monsters and NPCs spell save DCs are usually set in the stat block.
Counterspell is it's own thing.
You all are awesome. That really helped so thank you very much
Spell of confusion?
Thats my middle name 😄
Synaptic Static is by far the best expression of "spell of confusion" but we'll save that for another day 😉
(and also doesn't work like that- Counterspell would automatically dispell a 3rd level spell. The DC 10+ spell level vs (spellcasting ability) check only applies to when you cast a counterspell (a 3rd level spell normally) at a level lower than the target spell- but that is getting a bit too much for new comers chat 😅 )
I'm using D&D Beyond app, so I think it auto calculates the DC in the description... At least it appears to?
It should yep!
Yeah DnDBeyond does a lot of the calculations stuff behind the scenes and helps you focus on just playing the game.
Thanks guys! Until the next roadblock lol
There are also very neat virtual table tops (vtt) which makes the game look totally dfferent
I am trying to get my friends and I into D&D, and we're planning on starting with The Lost Mines of Phandelver, since it's free on D&D Beyond. Is there anyway to get like a virtual tabletop for it for free, without going and having to create the map or anything for it. The whole virtual tabletop thing confuses me as it seems you have to develop it from the ground up, and I'm not sure how to do that as somebody without any experience in the D&D universe.
Owlbear.rodeo has a free tier
Rol20 too.
yes but how do i get it set up to have a mines of phandelver session, as it makes me create a map and everything and im not sure what to do
VTTs provide a palce to place maps and add tokens and is sueful for tracking spatial placement.
You grab the map image from DnDBeyond and add it to the VTT
so i have to upload like a png of the phandelver map and png of each character and everything?
Yes
We also have #third-party-tools-archive if you want to ask questions about a particular VTT. Although I'd recommend checking the VTT's own support links/forums/servers to get the most applicable support.
Hello, my friends and I are completely new to DnD and we had been planning to play it for quite a long time but the thing is we don't have someone that knows how to play DnD so the barrier to entry feels high and I am going to be the DM for them.
We are planning to play a premade campaign but Idk which campaign is an easy one.
Also could someone please give me an quick summary on how to play since I had been watching tons of videos and I am still kinda confused
Just got into dnd, reading the PHB. Got a kind of weird question. If my players for example get attacked by bandits, they defeat them but also kill the routing bandits. Would that be considered Neutral or Evil? And how much does "the law" play a part in forgotten realms?

Alignment isnt that important in this edition, its a loose guideline for your character. Mechnically has almost no effect
your DM can integrate it as much or as little as they want
Thank you
Kind of wondering what kind of world the released adventure are in. Wondering if i should have more modern laws apply or it be a more witcher 3 like experience where youre not really punished for any behaviour except in rp maybe
“Law” is going to be dependent on the world your DM built
As an EXAMPLE: you may find yourself in a city with strict no-killing policy, forcing ur party to act no lethally, with the consequence being the local guards coming after you if you break the rule
or, in a popular streamed campaign, there was a strictly religious city that banned arcane magic so wizards were frowned upon
The rules can be whatver the dm wants for a local setting
If it suits the story
If you are in a premade campaign it will be in the written materials
im following the published adventure books though
ah so ill get a better view of the world in those books maybe?
Again: if you are using a premade campaign, the rules will be in the materials. Feel free to modify as you like to suit your table
im just wondering what "the written materials" refer to. The Adventure books or the PHB?
The book for the adventure
Or if you’re using a smaller module, whatever comes with it
thanks! this been a great help ❤️
I’m not sure how much clearer i can make “written material”
There’s a lot of leeway given to DMs to adapt and adjust things to what they want and need to make the game fun for everyone.
@lunar river have fun and good luck
A couple exceptions with the artifact books (good and evil, forget thier names) and the deck of many things. And vecnas stuff.
hi. i want to make a pirate character. How to use Revolver and melee weapon at the same time? Is two weapon fighting enough? or Crossbow expert feat counts? need help with creating a character like that.
Two weapon fighting does not work with a revolver
This should go to #character-discussion
Also, make sure that your DM allows firearms in their campaign setting.
Yes- guns are possible, but the rules for them are optional and not legal in every campaign
i wanna make a custom character sheet to print, but im having problems
by custom i mean a more organized version of the default one
There are loads of simplified versions online
im using a few homebrew rules, so need my own because of it
so what do you recommend i do?
We’ll be no idea what extra stuff you need or why info you don’t need on the sheets might be a #third-party thing
i see

i dont see how this answers my question?
It’s a bot command that pulls up the list of starter links below it.
(But in fairness, those links only include official character sheets, not a means to create custom ones.)
@trail yacht I don't get how the hit dice (hp) works explained at this video: ||https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8N0nyfZE3E&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=11|| Could you help me? 😭 (Sorry for the ping, but you're the only one I kinda know? ^^)
Your class lists the size of your hit die (For example, for rogue that's d8, an 8 sided die)
When you start at level 1, your hit points are the maximum result of that die (in this case 8) + your constitution modifier
When you level up, you throw this die and add your constitution modifier to the result to see how much your maximum hit points go up (Though sometimes you can/must instead just use the average result, depending on the DM)
and how do I know what the consitution modifier is?
Whatever the stat is for your constitution, you’ll have to subtract 10 and divide that by 2
so a 12 constitution will be a +1 modifier
wait is consitution one of those 6 "abilities"? you determin when creating a character?
Yes
Also a maybe easy way to remember is that a nice round stat of 10 is a 0 modifier, and every 2 numbers up or down will change it by 1
8 = -1
12 = +1
I'll keep this in mind
There are also tables that show which modifier is which if you have a Player’s Handbook
Or just a quick google search if you’re unsure
Math is hard sometimes
Yep. Prety much whenever youd need to change the number, you usually get the time to check it, and it stays the same for a long time enough that you dont need to constantly care/remember 😎
Yeah you don’t need to worry about that rn if you’re just making a character
Eh, what I saw the mad involved in dnd isn't that difficult
That’s fair
I just know some people struggle and some don’t
I didn’t know which camp you were in, so I’m sorry for assuming
don't be sorry, math can be hard xd, I just get like most difficult math for each grade at school
This table shows how to convert an ability score into an ability score modifier:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#AbilityScoresandModifiers
wth am I tpying today 😭
how do you get a 30
Some enemies have higher than 20, or as a result of some magic items.
how do I work with dnd beyond to make a character 😭
ohh
Hey guys. I've got a Paladin at level 3 and I'm struggling with how many prepared spells I can have. Are my oath spells included in my total count of 2 allowed, or are they seperate
Once you gain access to an oath spell, you always have it prepared. Oath spells don't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.
Awesome, thanks a ton!
There should be an option to make a character once you make an account
wait, lemme pop into ur dm's
if you don't mind
What does this mean?-
"Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per rogue level after 1st"
When you level up, you gain more HP
So you’ll add 1d8+ your Constitution mod with each new level
but what's the "each new level" part about
You level up in DND
So you start at a certain level (usually one) and if you’re in a campaign, there are moments where your character levels up
So you’d go from level 1 to level 2
And gain new skills and some more HP
ohh, I got another question (sorry)
So, I was reading the rouge page
and I came across this:
"Expertise
At 1st level, choose two of your skill proficiencies, or one of your skill proficiencies and your proficiency with thieves’ tools. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses either of the chosen proficiencies.
At 6th level, you can choose two more of your proficiencies (in skills or with thieves’ tools) to gain this benefit."
What does this mean 😭😭
So with each class, at level 1, you get to choose certain skills to be good at
Rogues are allowed to pick 1-2 of these to specialize in
Meaning they will get an extra bonus for those skill checks
And at level 6, you can do it again
It’s ok
It’s a lot to remember for dnd
That’s why DND Beyond is a super helpful tool for beginners, because it makes it easier to create a character
It puts character creation into steps
Hello
how do I use the thieves' cant?
Wsp
Nothing much.
That’s up to the DM’s discretion
There are many interpretations to what Thieves Cant is
It can be code words/phrases, code writing, a mix of both
Everyone uses it differently (if used at all)
how do I determine my hp at lvl 2? (new character, DM told me to start at lvl 2)
and what about the modifier
Rouge
I didn't roll for consitution yet
So at the top of your class, you’ll see this:
Hit Points
Hit Dice: 1d8 per rogue level
Hit Points at 1st Level: 8 + your Constitution modifier
Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per rogue level after 1st
You’ll want to finalise your major stats before doing much anything else on a character sheet.
So you’d have 8 + CON from level 1, and 1d8 + CON from level two.
8 + 1d8 + 2*CON total
I'm using the dnd beyond site
Ah, I don’t know DnD beyond. I’m used to pen and paper versions. :D
If you left the Hit Point Type as “Fixed”, then, (instead of “Manual/Rolled”), then it will just calculate this for you.
That will use the average at higher levels instead of rolling, though.
Which in your case it would be 8 + 5 + 2*CON.
(Instead of 8 + 1d8 + 2*CON)
I have a question. I just played my first session last night. Is there always going to be people talking over others?
Hello I’m new
Hey how do i as a new player find a campaign to play in
We can't answer that
You should bring it up with your group
?looking
oh mb thanks
Uh, that should bring up an info box
Head to #find-a-game and follow the instructions there
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
@crude musk No I'm asking if it's normal
"Normal" doesn't really mean anything
Again we cant answer that bc the interpersonal dynamics are different at every table
For some groups it's normal for there to be a lot of cross talk
For others, it's not
Normal is whatever your table establishes as normal
You’re asking what is normal for a random group of people we dont know a its impossible for us to answer
Got it.
It being normal is irrelevant
If you are worried about it then it's obviously not good in your eyes - so the advice of discussing it is good advice.
What you should be asking is "does this bother me?"
If so, discuss it with your group
I tried talking to my DM about it but its like he don't care.
Talk to your party members and see if you can work it out
Dnd is about people working together after all
Okay, well you can always voice it openly and be like "hey guys, I struggle when there's a lot of cross talk. Could we tone it down?"
Well, if it's a barrier to you playing in that group, then the group will need to change, or you will need to change group. Just have an open conversation about it - in my experience, people are quite receptive when it's all about having more fun together.
If they don't want to agree to that, you have two options
- Accept it and tolerate it the best you can
- Leave the table and find a new group
Can I leave after a session?
While the DM has a lot of power at the table, it's also not entirely down to them to regulate other people's behaviour.
You can leave a game at any time if you want/need to
Totally. The first few sessions are a very common time to find out that a group isn't for you.
There's an expression; "no D&D is better than bad D&D"
It’s a game….
You are not obligated to play
If there is a lock on the door or other restraints your problem is bigger than cross talk, call the cops?
Okay, this gives me perspective. Thanks.
To expand on this; while not playing D&D may be dissapointing, no one ever has a bad time not doing something. But you can have a bad time doing something badly
It just makes me uninterested in the game ....
That is why no D&D is better than bad D&D
Having a bad experience playing can put you off the game
I will say that normal or not, having a group that isn't considerate of you sucks
And it's always worth it to find a group that will be
@crude musk Thanks. This helps.
No need to thank me specifically, folks like @viral pelican and @slow hawk were saying the same thing
Consensus
Well, thanks to you all.
D&D is intensely social and as such, it can cut deep to how we feel
Is it me, or is finding a group very hard?
for real though it is
Any party that has a similar schedule to me, is full or is not taking new players
I had found an irl party, but our schedules are literally incompatible
thats usually how that works
Yep
getting folks schedules to align is... hard
literally impossible
Maybe check out #looking-for-community as many of those servers may have D&D games running at a time that fits your schedule.
All that do are full
Been checking for like 3 days
Like some servers use a play format called Westmarches where there isn't a set party or DM and if enough folks get together to play and find a DM willing to run a session, they just pick up and start from there. It's like pickup-D&D.
Also there's Adventurer's League which is organized D&D play.
?al
The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. Players use the fifth edition rules to create a character and bring that character to games anywhere D&D Adventurers League play is happening.

What “online status stuff”?
Can you clarify what you mean by online status stuff?
I can show ya in dms
As a moderator I do not take direct messages here for understandable reasons
Do you mean if your character is grappled? Or stunned? Those kinds of status?
Problem is I’m not American
Like a character sheet/invetory
So DnDBeyond provides tools for generating and managing a digital character sheet
Where can I post to show what I'm talking about
You can link to an image here.
You can use an image/file sharing service and link to the image that way.
That looks like it was made using a spreadsheet.
it does
How can I do that
Excel or Google Docs or something.
yeah
Nobody knows 💀
Well I didn’t make it, so I couldn’t possibly tell you for sure. 😅
But it certainly looks like a spreadsheet.
And spreadsheets could be set up in all sorts of different ways.
Here’s one example:
https://gsheet2.avrae.io/
You can sign up and make up to 6 characters using the Basic Rules for free on D&D Beyond here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/builder
Oh I mean't for him but yep thanks
Where can I find how to create characters?
The free starter rules first chapter goes through the step by step process of creating a character. See https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules.
You could also use DnDBeyond's character creator tool - it even has a beginner option that helps explain the process.
I know how. But I don’t under some parts about it.
If you have specific questions, feel free to ask here.
Okay.
Do you have a specific question about the process? Or where are you running into difficulties?
Regarding HP increases on level up on dndbeyond, is it rolled automatically or do I need to roll and input it myself?
Specific questions. Since I can’t send an image, may I private chat you?
I would like to private chat someone about my questions.
That depends on your character settings.
If you have Hit Point Type set to “Fixed”, it will use the average hit die size. If your hit die is 1d8, for example, it will add 5.
If it’s set to “Manual / Rolled”, you’ll need to update it yourself on the Class tab by clicking Manage HP.
Add whatever number you rolled to the running total. Your CON mod is added to that automatically.
You can send a link to the image here if you like.
It’s on my phone….it won’t work that way…
U could just..ask your question
Is fixed Hp better then rolling?
Rolling gives you random results and fixed gives you fixed
So it could be better or worse
Im not sure how we can tell you whats better - do u want the randomness?
Fixed is the average for the hit dice
It’ll generally be up to your dm which one you should use
Cool
I’ve heard a rule I kinda like where you roll but if you get below the average you just take the average
New here. I've never played before and am learning slowly. Getting ready to develop a character. I have a question though. Is motm different from dnd?
I heard that to or you get 2 rolls
Monsters of the multiverse is an expansion book for dnd 5e
Defeats the purpose of rolling
I have a house rule to reroll 1s
It’s pretty much dlc for Dnd 5e
Thank you!
Monsters of the Multiverse is a supplement book with additional player races
Thank you!
Thank you!
Wait it doesn’t actually have monsters? Lol I never knew that
Lol
It does!
It has PC races and monsters.
Okay
Gotta sell the book to players and DMs
So if I wanted to play dnd, and developed a character as let's say a harengon... that would be okay?
That should be fine - I do recommend working with your DM and group when building characters for a specific game/campaign to ensure it fits the general vibe that the group is wanting to go for.
Ask your DM as they have final say what is in their campaign setting
I'll take all the advice I can get. I don't know what I'm doing.
Read the Basic Rules and all questions here
Bit late, but just wanted to add fixed is technically slightly higher than average. So it is a safer bet.
hello
should i balance out my players subclasses or should i just use stronger monsters
Might be a question better suited to #dm-discussion . Balancing encounters is definitely one of the trickier bits of DMing
How much similarity does Baldur’s Gate 3 have with DnD? I’m new, thinking if I got into the game I’ll get more knowledgeable about it. Is it a good choice…?
Does anyone know a good app/website for creating a character?
BG3 is based on 5e, but with a few rule changes to adapt it better to a video game format
For the standard, newbies, I think DnD Beyond is a safe bet/easy for new players.
So it will be very similar in many ways, and probably trip you up in some small ways.
@heady locust thank you!
So is it a good idea to try it out as a new player or…?
I'd say play it anyway if you want to, because it's a good game, and you can certianly use a lot of the information from it for your Tabletop D&D game too.
I got into D&D through an older D&D game based on 3.5. I tripped up a few times as some rules were different between Video game and Tabletop, but it certainly helped me get a faster grip of the game.
Hmm, I see, okay then I guess I’ll consider buying the game
We have #baldurs-gate-3-spoilers channel for more discussion of the game. And #1136736147817631967 for spoilers.
Hello, I've always heard of DND but it always seemed complicated too me. But after playing Baldur's Gate 3 for a while, I really want to learn how to play the tabletop. Are there any DND groups looking for a new member?
#find-a-game can point you in the right direction.
Before you look for a group, read the basic rules and free materials

New player here (well, I have played before but it was in the early 80s). Looking forward to meeting some people and learning some things.
New Player here, I haven't played since 3.5
Hey everyone. Been a couple years since I've been in a campaign. Really looking forward to getting back into the game and meeting other players 😁
Nice
in an in-universe sense, what's the upper limit of healing magic? like, say someone had a permanent injury, like blindness, deafness, a mangled or cut off limb. could it be healed, or are there some practical restrictions on healing magic?
Spells can fix all of that iirc
However finding a powerful enough spellcaster who can cast those spells may be very hard
With sufficiently high magic and materials, even death is reversable, so …not really a limit
i see, thank you
Could someone give a rundown on how DnD Works?
This does a good job of covering the basic idea:

thank you
Hello I am new
hi
Hi
Hello all! I am new here to the server!
Hello
Not sure if it belongs here or in #character-discussion / #optimization . but what determines which stat is used for the spell casting modifier? Does each cantrip/spell have a specific stat modifier? If so how do I know which stat it uses for the modifier?
The class
If your class (or subclass) can cast spells, it will say in its description
The question is fine for here
I see, I think I am getting more confused because I want to multiclass. I want to start level 1 as knowledge cleric and then go full wizard after that point. So I am guessing any cantrip/spell I take level 1 will use WIS because I am putting my level into the cleric class. And cantrips/spells after that point will all use INT because all my levels go into wizard?
if you cast a cleric spell, it will use WIS
If you cast a wizard spell, it will use INT
This is the downside of multiclassing - if you pick classes that rely on different abilities to function, you become multi-ability dependent (MAD)
Its not impossible to multiclass Cleric and Wizard, it just takes careful planning and decisions about what to prioritize
Multiclassing is a tool that requires forethought and a plan, thats why it is not recommended for new players
hi am am new
Interesting, how does that work then with spells that can be taken as part of multiple spell lists? For example I think both sorcerer and wizard can get fireball, but one uses CHA and one uses INT.
can i be in someones campang
If I recall, it is dependent upon which list you took it from
Multiclassing spellcasters involves two separate progressions:
- spell slot progression
- spells known progression
Your spell slots are calculated by adding together all the spellcaster levels you have and then using a table to determine how many you have. For example, a wizard 2 and sorcerer 2 = 4 spell casting levels
Your spells known is tracked separately, so a wiz 2/sorc 2 character would know be able to use spells that wiz 2 would get and sorc 2 would get
If you're looking for a group check out #find-a-game for how to find one here.
For fireball, it would depend whether you got fireball from wiz or sorc. If wiz, then INT, if sorc, then CHA
yeah that makes sense then. and im guessing if you learn a spell from a scroll it will always use wizards INT as the spell cast modifier because learning spells is a wizard exclusive feature?
if you learned it through wizard means it is a wiz spell
Are you talking about using a spell scroll or using a spell scroll to add a spell to your spell book? Two different things
using a spell scroll to add a spell to my spellbook
Aye then, that'd make it a Wizard spell; so yeah, Int would be the modifier
personally I only plan on putting a single point for cleric. but just to try and understand how it works. what if I was level 5/5 on cleric/wizard or so and wanted to learn a cleric spell into my spellbook. Would that use WIS because its a cleric spell or would it actually change the cleric spell modifier to INT because its a wizard mechanic to learn it?
or can you only learn a spell into your spellbook if its from the wizard spell pool
you can only learn wizard spells into your spellbook
whats your reasoning for taking a level in cleric?
I wouldnt recommending just multiclassing randomly
Refer to the section in Wizard titled “Copying a spell into your spellbook”
I want to start as cleric for medium armor proficiency, 2x skill expertise and access to guidance, resistance and bless. also shield proficiency is nice because I want to be a tankier spell caster
i mean thats a decent idea
Always remember that you cant have everything and multiclassing is a give and take
i mean for a 1 level dip id say its pretty worth it
its not a perfectly optimised build but its pretty good
I am quite clearly speaking generaly
yeah ive spent a bit of time trying to understand how to make my character before playing xd. i saw someone recommend going knowledge domain / divination with a level 1 dip and was trying to understand how it worked
I should point out clerics do not get “expertise”
knowledge domain
but because I want to max my INT level 1 I was wondering if there was any way for me to get a damage cantrip that uses INT as the modifier, or because im cleric no matter what cantrips/spells I take level 1 they will all use WIS
at level 1 bc youre only a cleric anything you take will be as a cleric
at level 2 tho when you take a level in wizard you can take wizard spells
so im probably better off just taking utility spells that dont rely on a modifier for my cleric dip? like I assume guidance doesnt get boosted, unless the 1d4 benefits from spell modifier
it does not, no
i would personally go for medium wis, focus on int, take the damage reduction at level 1, then fully kick in at level 2
exactly
Guidance is unaffected by a modifier
Instead of splitting wis/int just for a cantrip when you’re ultimately going to be a wiz, just use a light crossbow at lv 1. Wizards need some dex and you can have higher dex than wiz
note that to multi class wiz/cleric u must have 13 wiz
Yeah I want to have high dex anyways for the AC bonus so I can probs just use a crossbow
Which again, a cost to multiclassing
oh, thats something I didnt know about. interesting
Aye, multiclassing requires a minimum of 13 in one or two scores (depending on class) to multiclass in or out of a class. Easy enough to do, but you'll be needing to consider how to spread your scores depending on what method is ultimately used to generate your scores
yeah I might have to drop my dex a little bit to make up for that then
Hey! Was wondering if anyone actually plays dnd without mics or is it rarely done
It's called play by post and you can find games for it somewhat regularly.
speaking of play by post do you know any good popular servers for it? I was in one a year ago but I cannot find them anymore and I think they closed the server
There's some in #looking-for-community
Yeah that's why I asked if anyone knew of one but I didn't realise it wasn't allowed. Cus I've had some bad experiences so I was saddened to see the only one I had a positive experience in closed
What are the downsides of using a shield as a Druid?
There aren’t really any
After A LOT of convincing I finally got my 2 friends wanting to play dnd with me however one of them has no computer or laptop, just his phone. Is there any way I could still play without having to do it all in our own imagination I.e. Any apps like roll20 or dmhub for mobile
Well we all live in different countries so not an option
Yh it's kind of sad that it's all for pc
I think you can try Roll20 but it'll be hard with its UI on a small screen.
I will try this
Are the Moon Druid the only ones who can use wildshape during combat? I'm confused at the difference between them and other Druid, can't all Druid wildshape?
moon druid just lets you wildshape as a bonus action
All druids can, moon druids just get stronger creatures to turn into, and can do so as a bonus action instead of action like other druids
all druids can wildshape in combat
Does moon Druid get access to reptiles that the others can't? I'm tryna make a lizardfolk druid who specifically only turns into reptiles (lizard, crocodile, flying snake, etc) and am trying to pick an appropriate subclass
There are definitely some reptiles of higher cr than what other druids could turn into
What should you do to avoid mimics? Kick everything before you touch it?
Are they pretty muche exactly like dark souls?
Wouldn't you just get your leg eaten if you kicked one, I assume shooting an arrow or ranged attack would be better?
Well I believe kicking would count as touching 😉
You could try to attack / poke every chest at a safe distance you come across
Idk in dark souls you have to hit a chest before opening to see if its a mimic then if it is it’ll start standing up it doesnt bite whatever you used to hit it
Yeah presuming you hit a mimic, it would be likely to fight back since it probably assumes itself to be discovered / wants to avoid further damage
Do wild shape physical attacks use strength or wisdom?
The stat block will tell you but it’s normally strength
You retain your int Wis cha scores it’s your str dex and con that change on wild shape
You mean Dex not agi right
when i cast hex on a monster it gets disadvantage on ability throws. what could an ability throw be?
