Or if you just want to check it out before you buy.
Thanks!
Honestly I'm new to DND and lookin' for somewhere I could find fellow newbies (or people who actually know what they are doing) to play with, I've tried some sites but because I'm new, I don't understand what the hell ppl are talkin' about there.
I'd recommend looking through #looking-for-players then, there are often DMs looking for new players.
hey im the same, maybe we could search for a game together
I'm new to Idk what I'm doing but trying my best maybe we could play
Im trying to get into Dnd i havent ever played it but it looks real fun and interesting, I just dont know where to start
Rules question: Does losing temporary hit points count as taking damage? I.e. Do you have to make a Constitution save to avoid losing concentration if you only lost temporary hit points to an attack?
it does count as taking damage, yes
I would start by reading the basic rules linked in the bot post below, at least the first four chapters on character creation
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.

hi
Hi
thx
Alr, time to read.
Hello everyone I need help finding a dnd group near me can anyone help me
Near you, in person?
Look for local game or comic store
Also search for an Adventureās league chapter- thats the official organized play league
Facebook, meetup, yelp, warhorn, school clubs as nearby universities
ive never played dnd before, does anyone have any tips to help me get started
Well, you see, I go to spiral school. They don't really have any DND clubs already checked. And I can't really go to any comic book stores. Or something like that? Because, um, well, my truck's not working
I mean we cant solve a transportation issue, we can only give ideas for where to lookā¦
Get a feel for the game mechanics and how character sheets work (see the free basic rules - check the pinned messages here on this channel). Then maybe watch some folks playing (there are lots of D&D livestreams/video-on-demand and podcasts). Then try making a character to get a feel for that. Then find a group to play with.
I know but I'm still looking
Feel free to check our #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community channels. Read #find-a-game to learn more about our #looking-for channels.
OK thank u so much
Hi im looking for a dm
Check out #find-a-game

Thanks
I need help i cant get iny one to play dnd with me and when i try useing the comand to get people ti wont work
Did you read the instructions in #find-a-game? You just start typing /looking-for and then select dm and then the bot should give you a form to fill out. Once you submit it, the bot creates a post in the appropriate channel and attaches a thread to the post for you to use to add corrections or folks can respond to you.
For this to work you do need to make sure your Discord client allows embeds.
Hey hey

Ok thanks @echo kelp
what's dnd beyond?
@weary void ty also ill def be joining a game first as even starting seems daunting lol
DnDBeyond is D&D's official digital toolset - it's a way to help run D&D games
d&d beyond is a set of digital tools for the fifth edition of the game
You can see what it has to offer here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/
You don't need DnDBeyond to play D&D - but it is a tool to help play.
Like access to digital versions of the books, a character builder, and encounter builder, Avrae Discord bot to help play D&D on Discord, etc.
dont worry, since you're looking too, do you wanna stick together? I'll help you cuz im not afraid of anything.
Sounds great will you be around tomorrow night? Ill be heading to sleep in about 30ish

how do you play dnd
Look at the post above yours.
Thank you btw, really appreciate the help above :)
I want to get into DND but im really put off by how theres one session a week and its only a few hours in most groups. Are there any groups that just get together whenever and play for as long as time allows?
There are probably, but it's pretty much the norm to play weekly for a set amount of time
People have lives that they have to fit D&D around, getting 4-6 people committing 3-4 hours to a single activity on a regular basis is challenging
You can always join multiple groups, but always keep in mind that whatever you commit to, you should be able to commit to
DMs also need time to prep the game
As a newer player does it matter if I start with a regular session based or a PbP? Play-by-Post seems more convenient but I don't know if I should learn the basic's better before continuing onto one.
it doesn't matter at all beyond what you think you'll prefer
PbP is just a style of play, it's not more 'basic' than online chat or IRL
I was considering it more difficult for a game to run smoothy, but the idea of it seems sweet.
How does PbP even work? It seems really slow and clunky
I also have like zero DnD experience besides watching Critical Role, so I'm kind of worried about being a detriment to which ever I decide to play.
You could look into Westmarches that are designed to be just that. Multiple Dms and Players, Dms run when ever they can, any player who is available and has a PC of an appropriate level can jump in.
If you understand the basic rules even somewhat, any good dm would teach you the rest
PbP is slower by design, it's a feature not a bug
If you want to know how it works, head on over to the D&D Beyond forums and check out the play by post section. You can see dozens of games being run there, go into any thread and have a look (just do not post invited)
Do not worry about being a 'detriment' at all! New players are new players, any group that doesn't allow for new players to get some things wrong or need to learn is honestly not a good group. And even if you get things wrong, it's usually no biggie, cus folk can just correct you and advise you. It's not like MMOs where you need to be 'carried' by a group. Most of the fun is more in just participating enthusiatically, and in combat you can take your time to think about your move and ask for suggestions if you need it.
Hey there looking for play and learn DnD as a complete new player. Can I get that from here? Any advice would be amazing

You want #character-discussion
I'll meet you there, Joker.
Hi
One message removed from a suspended account.
Yes, that's very relevant
That level 14 character is likely to get flattened in a balanced combat
It's not even the level gap, but the fact level 14 is a tier 3 character and level 18 is tier 4. Each tier represents a jump in the power level of PCs and the enemies they're expected to fight

Hello people, I“m a new player as a friend gifted me the essentials kit (he does not know how to play either) and I was reading all to prepare for our first campaign with other friends, but it seems that the "Dragon of Ice spire Peak" campaign is complicated for new people. Is there any campaign that it's better for new players? and also as I have to be the DM, are there any tips at the moment to lead the history?. It's very appreciated and thank you in advance.
Lost Mine of Phandelver is free if you register with D&D Beyond. (You don't need to use the site beyond accessing the module.) There are plenty of beginner-friendly one-shots if you don't wanna commit to a full campaign.
If you don't like DoIP, Lost mine of Phandelver is good and free : https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Hey, thanks for havin me.
The Stranger Things set and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle are also designed for newbies.
DoIP isn't too complex really, it's just it's not a story-led campaign, and a lot of people think that a story is a better introduction for new players.
Myself included, in fact!
For new DMs, too, I'd say.
Yes I agree. A more linear experience like LMoP is easier for a new DM than the sandbox of DoIP
how do I find a game that allows ppl under 16 ehe-
There are tons of resources on being the DM. My personal favorite is Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series. My advice is start DMing before you feel 100% ready because that will likely never happen. I'm not saying don't prepare at all; I just mean that eventually you have to do it, and no amount of reading or videos will cross that gap for you.
like I can't find a party that allows under 16s from most discords ehe
School clubs, local libraries, or game stores would be my first suggestion. If you're searching online, you can use keywords to help filter your results.
I have to search online cuz my mothers way to overbearing unless I'm on my pc
Check #looking-for-players and try different terms. I found one with just a very quick search: #looking-for-players message
There's also a bunch of other sites; don't just use Discord.

Hello, thank you for having me! I'm fairly novice at d&d but I know my way around the dice and improv stories
Does any new dnd players want to talk about their character sheet?
We do have #character-discussion and #optimization for talk along those lines!
Okay
Hey guys. I just joined, and im hosting me and my friends' first ever D&D session. Can a DM please contact me and help me with questions? cuz i got a few..

so does anyone here play the irl game?
Plenty do, why?
im just looking for someone who has time to chat and help me out with some basic rules
Theres the Adventureās League which hosts games regularly in places across the world
do u have time to talk about the rules with me?
You can ask specific new player questions here
Take your time
i just need someone who wants to talk
Thereās no VC on this server tho. Itās all text based.
After you read the (free) Basic Rules ask your questions here.
what is Unearthed Arcana?
Beta test
It's kind of like Beta or Playtest material. It's not official... Yet!
i got interested in dnd 7 years ago but at the time none of my friends wanted to play the game since they thought it was too complicated, so instead of learning how to play the game and teaching them i simply discarded all the rules and systems, it was basically roleplay with a d20 and some cards that showed magical items. however my friends started to gain more interest as time passed so i simply read some dnd rules and implemented them, such as amour class and resting. we are about to start our 4th campaign, which is homebrew like all the other games. ive already read the players handbook and the dm guide. im not really interested in running an official campaign since it wouldnt work with my players characters but i also dont want to just do homebrew. im really lost and i dont know what to do
You dont want to home brew and you dont want to run a premade campaign?
First learn the rules of the game since you discarded the rules...
Kinda excludes every option there
There are 3rd party adventures if you don't want the official WotC prewritten adventures.
So I guess the only way is to create your original campaign like most people do
i have
ive said i read the rules
i do want to do homebrew
Heya š how does money conversion work xD? I just found 15.000 copper coins ... can i just convert them to gold ? or do i have to exchange them somewhere ?
Since they add me an extra weight of 300 xD
i know the rules and i know how to create my world. what im asking is how do i implement this with my friends
They need to learn the rules too
its too overwhelming for them
they just like learning new game mechanics
such as the combat system
Game mechanics are rulesā¦
They just need to learn the combat rules and what their characters' do.
thank you
I highly recommend that they check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Why do you say itās overwhelming for them? Have they actually tried
yes
You can teach them, and look at materials together
They don't need to memorize the rules. The rulebooks are there to be referenced.
It sounds very defeatist the way you describe it
yesterday i explained how leveling up works and they couldnt wrap their heads around xp
im a bad explainer sorry
Take your time. You can do practice sessions like a tutorial level in a video game so they get used to D&D's turn-based combat system.
you dont need to be the explainer, have them read at the materials and review them after together
woahhh i like that!
You can start off as level 0 characters (yes they don't exist in 5E) like commoners with ability score of 10s and no class features so that way they know the fundamentals of combat without being bogged down with class feature mechanics. After the tutorial level they can pick their race and class, much like a video game.
btw, please don't Direct Message me. You can message me here.
ok
How do i play dnd?
Very long
Loooooong rules
But you do need dice and some sort of mini figs
And players hand book
And character sheet
And dnd beyond

And a lot of rules
I only have a very basic understanding of these rules
Same
I hear the introductory demo is very useful for players with little knowledge of the game, and the Handbooker Helper series is great for nailing down specific sections of the rules
Fr
You don't need "mini figs", you can play D&D digitally online or what's called "theatre of the mind" which doesn't involve any maps or minis
I can't wait to get into an actual game tho
You also don't need the Player's Handbook if you're getting started as all the core rules are found in the Basic Rules
Dude I'm using chess pieces as my mini figs that's how cheap I am with this game
And you don't need to use D&D Beyond, many don't
Okay, that doesn't change anything about what I said. You don't need figures/tokens/pawns to play D&D
Fr
You stated you need D&D Beyond to play, which is not true and misleading for new players
Dmd beyond was really helpful when Creating a character sheet
Dnd beyond is a need for me so yes I'm giving advice
True
When giving advice to newcomers, it's best to make it clear when something is an opinion/preference to avoid giving the wrong impression
Yes I'm telling him that the basic rules you need to play dnd is on dnd beyond instead of getting the players handbook for money. I know a lot about dnd now because of dnd beyond and the basic rules so that's why I was suggesting it
That wasn't what you initially said but now you've clarified, yes, D&D Beyond is a good way to access the basic rules rather than buying the players handbook, at least when you're new at D&D
That's up to your DM. Tables can all handle currency exchange differently since there are no explicit rules for it (thankfully).
How's everyone doing?
Pretty good
That's good
Do Tabaxi's claws count as nonmagical weapon for the purpose of the Magical Weapon spell ?
More of a #dnd-rules question but I donāt believe so bc they are specifically āunarmed strikesā not ānatural weaponsā
Im a new dnd player can anyone explain the Fighting system to me Its a bit complicated and I don't really get it

How does fall damage work
At the end of a fall, a creature takes 1d6 bludgeoning damage for every 10 feet it fell, to a maximum of 20d6. The creature lands prone, unless it avoids taking damage from the fall.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#Falling
to a maximum of 20d6

What?
dw
Okay, the next step is to find a group to play with. Check out #find-a-game
do you need a mic to be in a DnD game?
Not necessarily but itās helpful, although if youāre playing over discord it can be good for the dm to put what they say in text form, simply as a record of whatās happened
What I tend to do is state the basic action in text and do the flavour text over vc
Most online games in my experience will require you to have a mic as a bare minimum
my computers microphone port is broken, but i can still hear other people in vc
lmk what most online games qualify then
It really depends who youāre playing with, if itās an unknown group they might be a bit mift but if youāre playing with people you know they shouldnāt mind too much. It slows things down a bit but itās not absolutely necessary (however, the role play aspect will be a bit harder as flavour text takes a while to write)
hm ok than, thank you !
What I mean by "most online games" are all the games I have ever played online
I've never once played with someone in an online game that didn't have a microphone
so its your preference to not play with people without mics in online games
That is accurate, not being able to see someone's face removes a massive part of the social aspect of D&D that I enjoy, also removing their voice just kills it for me
DeezTwenties is right, but people you know will be far more lenient. If itās a group of people you pulled together to play with itās likely theyāll have their own technical difficulties, especially if theyāre new to the game. Itās a learning curve
If you'd prefer to play by text, you can look for Play-By-Post games?
nah its fine, ig i just didn't realize it'd be such a big deal since it wasnt in any of the other's i played with randoms
thanks for the help boss
Anyone have tips for attracting local players to play?
I don't really know anyone who plays so I'm posting on local forums and whatnot, but it's like a combination of anxiety and other X factors I'm not aware of makes it tough to get people to want to play.
Uh... offer a free dice set to folks who come to learn D&D?
Me personally i would host a party and then during the party slowly ease the people into dnd stuff
Watch the D&D movie with folks? Then play a simple and short one-shot with pregen chaarcters?
Suuuper newcomer here, been learning ways to get into DMing and the one thing I canāt seem to wrap my head around is how to balance combat for # of players and their levels? i.e. how much enemy health to give, # of enemies, their stats, and tweaking it accordingly if itās one or multiple enemies? Any tips or videos because that seems to be my current roadblock!
I would recommend heading over to #dm-discussion
I would also recommend DMing a prewritten campaign, such as the free Lost Mine of Phandelver.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Sounds good! Appreciate the redirect and recommendation. š

I'd like to play pbp, and am currently looking into avrae and rules. Could I get an example of how a game looks? Combat as well as narrative ability checks. I feel like I understand the avrae syntax, but I'd like to see it in action. Can't seem to find a resource for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Check the introductory demo: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en - this would be a bit similar to a play by post game, lots of text, etc.
As far as Avrae, check in with the helpful folks on the Avrae developer (invite is on the Avrae.io website) or even our #ddb-avrae-help.
How do I manage Snippets?
I'm trying to have it where it's CHA+2 & STR+1 but I can't find an example anywhere
Snippets for what exactly? Oh wait you're trying to homebrew the aasimar-like race?
If you're making a copy of the Aasimar race it should have fields where that's set up. I haven't worked with homebrewing races before though so I can't really give more info then that. I'd also suggest checking with folks in #homebrew as I'm sure someone there has a much better idea on how it works.
Nope, that's intentional
And again, this isn't the homebrew channel. You want #homebrew
Homebrewing is not a newcomer topic, hence why it gets its own channel and isn't a topic for this one
this is us mods telling you there's a better channel to be posting this and to please take any further discussion of it there

Any recs for beginner Dm friendly campaigns?
Lost Mine of Phandelver is free and was written for new players and DMs in mind.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
I used Candlekeep Mysteries for a series of one-shots when I was starting out, to get a feel for the game
The Stranger Things set and Dragons of Stormwreck Isle are, like Lost Mine, meant for new players and DMs. There are plenty of beginner-friendly one-shots too if you don't want to commit to a full campaign immediately.
For dragon breath and other spells that say touch a willing creature does that include yourself or you have to touch someone else
that does include yourself
If a spell targets a creature of your choice, you can choose yourself, unless the creature must be hostile or specifically a creature other than you.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#TargetingYourself
Does lowering dex by one always result in ac getting lowered by 1
It does for all most armor, at least.
And for the base AC without armor.
It does not for a Tortle.
if your DEX modifier is higher than the max bonus allowed by your armor, it wouldn't affect the AC either
Heavy armour has no Dex modifer applied so a low Dex doesn't affect it.
also it's the DEX modifier that needs to drop, not the Ability Score
Ah! Yeah, I misremembered on heavy.
I thought a negative dex could still drop it.
Heavy armor doesn't let you add your Dexterity modifier to your Armor Class, but it also doesn't penalize you if your Dexterity modifier is negative.
?
My paladin has an 6 Dex š She's a klutz!
Your shell provides you a base AC of 17 (your Dexterity modifier doesnāt affect this number).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/1026404-tortle
Hence, a decrease in your DEX mod would not lower the tortle's AC.
Tortle
It's from the Tortle Pack bundle
And most recently in Monsters of the Multiverse.
Literally half the book is updates to playable races. š
oh ok lmao I thought it was mostly to monsters
The other half is updates to monsters.
There's a whopping 33 player races in the book.
Hello
Do you start off at level 0
there is no official level 0 in D&D, so the normal lowest starting level is 1
though generally, the DM will set the starting level, so some games, particularly shorter ones, might start at a higher level.
as a 1st level artificer, how many lv1 spells can I learn ?
since I can learn spells from levels I can cast
is artificer a prep caster like druids or clerics ?
you know all level 1 Artificer spells, like a cleric or Druid would. and you can prepare a number of spells equal to your Intelligence modifier + half your artificer level
okay that's what I thought, thanks for the clarification
so if you have +3 in INT, you could prepare 3 spells
The definition of āmoteā is a very small partical, firebolt says you hurl a mote of fire, I dont get it
in Artificer's infusions, some need attunement, does it mean it only works on magic items ?
Hi
infusions are magic items made from mundane ones
oh so like
Can a Paladin use spells or is it like blessings from the god?
you make the item magic with infusions
yes
hey im new and im wondering how to get started

It's a good series, but the amount of intros and outros to get to the meat of the content can be a bit much.
You can skip ahead.
That's true, I'm just wondering if there are any alternatives
There aren't ones that are new player friendly in my opinion as the Handbooker Helper.
Sooo, I've play as a player 4 times I'm quick shots, but I want to learn how to dm

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnāt competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Ah cool, I never noticed those bot commands before!
Dungeon dudes have some good videos
Hey guys I'm new I'm looking for a group to play with but I can't find any wcid?
Are you looking to play online or in person?
Online
You've browsed the postings in #looking-for-players and #750812887697588356?
No
That would be a place to start. If you exhaust those options, there's a bunch of other places to search!
Thanks I have been searching for 6 7 hrs now
Yeah, finding a game can take a while.
Finding the right game can take even longer.
Be diligent. Be persistent. Cast a wide net.
Communicate your expectations up front.

But if youāve got any specific questions, ask away!
Welcome all
For rogue expertise it says choose two skill proficiencies does that mean choose two skills youāre already proficient in and theyāre bonus is doubled or choose two new skills to be proficient in and the bonus is doubled
Your "Proficiencies" are the skills that you are proficient in.
In this case, for the Rogue's Expertise feature, you should choose two skills you already have proficiency in, to then double.
Very good question
And if you mark skills youāre proficient in by filling in the bubble on the sheet how should you mark that your double proficient in them
put a circle around it
when im rolling if it hits or misses what modifiers do i add
vs what modifiers do i add when im rolling the actual attack
You typically add either your Strength or Dexterity modifier to weapon attack damage ā the same modifier you used for the attack roll.
You donāt typically add a modifier to damage from a spell attack unless the spell says otherwise.
And if you miss an attack, youāre not rolling anything, so modifiers are irrelevant.
When you make a weapon attack, you add your Attack Modifier
Your Attack Modifier = Strength or Dexterity (depending on the specific weapon) + your Proficiency Bonus (if you are proficient with the weapon)
When you roll damage for a weapon attack, you add your Damage Modifier to the damage dice which is most often just the Ability Modifier you used in the Attack Modifier (usually Strength or Dexterity)
okay okay i get it now

im trying to join a session and its my first time playing, is anyone hosting a match

Hello! I am very new to dnd. As in i heard about it from a friend and it looks interesting. I was wondering where the best place to start as there is a lot of content!
OH NVM I FOUND SOME LINKS FURTHER UP!
Howdy! New here too š
hello! this is my first introduction to D&D, I am currently creating my character, I want to be. monk and i havnt read much into it yet. but can I use a medium sized stick of lucky bamboo for my weapon? I want my character to be as deadly as possible with a more civil object. is what im talking about possible?
Yes
The monk section specifically describes the use of alternate weapon forms similar to existing weapons
Moreover, this is what we call āflavorā - the appearance of a weapon is something you can choose subject to your imagination, just like your voice, hair, clothes, whatever.
As long as you are using the mechanical aspects within the rules, its appearance is whatever you want
There is already a weapon called a quarter staff that is just a stick. You want it to bamboo? Go for it. Use the quarterstaff stats, make it look how u want
thank you so much!
hi! I haven't played DND in a long time and I haven't a group at current sadly, Ive never been too intergated in DND, only playing 3 total session. The links above you can help with that, but basically:
- Find a group to play with. This can be online, or a local in person group, or a bunch of friends you get to play with you.
- Look over the rules. Don't need to learn all of them from the get go, but character creation and combat are useful to look over.
If playing with friends, one of you needs to DM- be the dungeon master who runs the story. There are free to use adventures to help new DMs out. Otherwise, find a group, make a character, have fun!
Can i use booming blade on both my attacks for my T2 character
If by āboth your attacksā you mean Extra Attack, then no.
Extra Attack requires you to take the Attack action on your turn.
Booming Blade requires you to take the Cast a Spell action.
The one exception is a Bladesingerās version of Extra Attack, which allows you to replace one of the attacks with a cantrip.
But generally, youād have to choose between two regular attacks or one Booming Blade.
If Iām a Wizard with the magic initiate feat can I use that first level spell from the feat infinitiely without using up a spell slot?
That would be a question for #dnd-rules
This channel is more for newcomer questions on the basics
Sorry, uhm hi? Is there a channel for campaign or looking for players?
Yep! #find-a-game can get you started.
can someone explain to me how does dodging an attack exactly work, Me and my friends are trying to figure out dnd for the first time and using dnd beyond for trying it out. So if an enemy rolls an attack and i do a dex save roll and my value is higher does that mean i dodge. and how does taking damage working with taking your armour class in mind
thats not how dnd does it
an enemy rolls for attack
and then you compare that number to the armor class
if its equal to the armor class or higher then the attack hits
your armor class basically means how hard you are to hit
dex saves arent really relevant when getting hit by an attack
One of the actions you can take on your turn is the Dodge action, that grants you advantage on dexterity saving throws as well as disadvantage on attacks made against you. Otherwise username as the right of it. Your AC is the number to beat when an enemy makes an attack against you.
It's nice and simple to remember: Meet It to Beat It.
If your AC is 16 and an opponent rolls a 12 when they attack, they miss!
If they roll a 16 or higher, they hit!
so what exactly are save throws, and thanks for the info
saving t hrows are how good you are at resisting different effects
A saving throw--also called a save--represents an attempt to resist a spell, a trap, a poison, a disease, or a similar threat.
ohk
can you explain it a bit simpler
Saving throws are another way two opponents can interact with one another. While not exclusively, many saving throws are prompted by spells. Let's take an early spell like Burning Hands for example.
An enemy casts the spell, sending a cone of fire in your direction. You need to make a Dexterity saving throw (because that's what the spell asks for specifically) and need to beat a predetermined number the enemy has on their sheet called a Spell Save DC.
Meet It Beats It yet again, so if their DC is 14 and you roll a 15, you save, taking less damage from the spell!
do you know about the action economy ?
well doesnt really matter on your turn you have 1 action 1 bonus action and 1 reaction
and you can use your action to take the dodge action
which makes you harder to hit
just think that you are explaining a person what dnd is for the first time
i know the gist of dnd but where i live it has zero exposure so no idea how to do anything
but you usually use your action to attack or cast a spell so youre sacrficing that for extra defense
Yes, the Dodge action is an option you can use on your turn, usually instead of attacking, where you make yourself harder to hit.
Not always the best option, but sometimes you have no other choice!
do u think there would be an article or something that could explain these basics to me

Hi everyone glad to be here.
Hello
Can you do smth like if a player dies he dies permanently and gets like kicked from the campaign or smth
Also what kind of check do you need to identify a language noone in your group speaks
If a player character dies permanently then ask the player to create a new character if they want to remain in the campaign.
Perhaps an Int (History) check? You may not understand the language but you heard enough to identify it (for example, I don't know Korean but I know what it sounds like)
But what if you get like only 1 life per campaign as a player
Cuz respawning on the same power level wouldnt make sense for the campaign
And respawning on the start wouldn't ever make you meet the main group
Btw any tutor on boss brewing?
By respawning I mean new character spawning in
I mean you can do that if you want, but I will warn you that you should a) be very upfront that you are doing that and b) be pepared potentially get few interested players
D&D is not a roguelike game.
Just find a good narrative way of introducing a new character. That's no different than a new player joining the group.
I've had new players join the table and I describe ways how they meet the party.
Im making a roguelike game into a campaign so uh... you die you die XD
Are there like wands that get you new spells or sum?
In dnd 5e
Have you read the Basic Rules?
Or sum kind of wands or smth that gives you new homebrew speells
Mostly
Hi
There are magic items that grant extra spells, but usually they have item specific charges to cast those spells
But we are probably getting outside the newcomers chat topics
Where
Example pls
Hello
Here is a once a day spell item
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4599-cape-of-the-mountebank
Eyes of Charming has the charges mechanic for example
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/4633-eyes-of-charming
Its a game in an imaginary world created by the DM and expanded upon by the players
There is no reason a new character cant show up at a certain level
I've had players leave my game for various personal reasons and I've added in three new players. The party is level 7 so the new PCs are also level 7 to make things fair and balanced.
Anything else is likely to leave players dissatisfied.
I have added a few people to mine over time. Currently my group is drifting apart so need to wrap it up to restart at a lower level for the keen newbies I have been collecting
Sounds like youāre trying to design a campaign, which is #dm-discussion
Hi I am new two dnd how two find a online group
Check out the posts in #looking-for-players and see if any vibe with you āŗļø
Ok thanks
So I learnt recently that a Druid can switch out there spells to the limit of their level + their WIS Mod.
Does anyone know if this also includes their Cantrips, please?
Cantrips are fixed until your next level. Spells with spell slots can be switched upon a long rest.
If you ever have a question like this, there is a specific section for Spellcasting on the Druid class section
I have looked in the PHB and found nothing. That is why I am asking here.
So I have read it, but it only says spells. So does this include Cantrips?
I know how fiddly the wording can be with 5E at times
That section says you know two cantrips but can prepare leveled spells.
It's right in the Cantrips section:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/classes#Cantrips3
At 1st level, you know two cantrips of your choice from the druid spell list. You learn additional druid cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Druid table.
Also to be more specific, the ability to change cantrips is from Tashaās, and is called Cantrip Versatility
It lets you switch when you gain an ASI
Not got Tasha's content on DnDBeyond, can't view it.
All it says about Cantrips, is:
"At 1st level, you know two cantrips of your choice from the druid spell list. You learn additional druid cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Druid table."
Nothing about being able to change them out after a Long Rest like your spells.
Therefore, as Cantrips are part of a Druid's Spell arsenal, can they be switched at the same time as changing your other spells?
... Please?
No, they can't.
You prepare the list of druid spells that are available for you to cast. [...] The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots. [...] You can also change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest.
The definition for cantrips further clarifies that they aren't prepared:
A cantrip is a spell that can be cast at will, without using a spell slot and without being prepared in advance.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Cantrips
Cantrips are essentially 0-level spells that are "burned" into your mind. Your character has used them so often they can cast at-will with no spell slots. This is why narratively you can't switch them out at all (or not easily with some classes like artificer).
As i said above - cantrips are not prepared. They are known. You cannot change them the way you can leveled spells because those are specifically prepared
Cheers
DND beyond character creation seems really overwhelming are and don't have all the class/races I was hoping for there any other sites that are more newcomer friendly or can I get some info to help me traverse the site?
Also are sub classes there own thing or are they just homebrew because i can't find them on DND beyond
You need to have access to content either by buying it yourself or having someone share it with you; only Basic Rules material is freely available.
That does include one subclass per class (if I recall correctly).
Oh that sucks
Well, WotC makes their money selling books.
The playable classes (sub-classes) found in the Basic Rules are free and are included with your D&D Beyond account.
You can buy individual sub-classes for about $2 each on D&D Beyond.
Alr thanks for the info šš
$2
And whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
But IMO, D&D Beyond is the easiest site there is.
Is there somewhere specific you're getting stuck?
looking for a new player for my group we meet on saturday on discord every 10pm mt and play until 2am mt

Is Ray of ice a level 3 spell?
There is no spell called āRay of Iceā in 5e.
There is a cantrip called Ray of Frost
And thereās only four 3rd-level spells that can deal cold damage:
- Elemental Weapon
- Glyph of Warding
- Hunger of Hadar
- Spirit Shroud

Helloooo
Hi
how are you
Hi all. Long time interest, gonna play my first game next month. Hoping to work my way toward being a DM at our local library which runs games for youngsters
My immediate challenge is finding others who can work with my schedule but some friends are carving out some time for a one shot, then going from there
anyone know how i could get into a dnd game? im really going in blind here lol
To start with have you read the basic rules?
uh nah i havent
Those would help but also #find-a-game is a good place to actually look for a game.
You dont need to know all the rules and some people learn better by playing, but having a perusal is a good start,
okay, thanks
Hello Iām new to dnd
Welcome to the server. The pinned messages have some good resources you might wanna check out. Otherwise, fire away if you have particular questions.
Iāve been hearing about and i am very interested to try some DND i am new to this?

Trying to do so anywhere else is off-topic and will be removed.
I do recommend being patient and spreading your search wide - it can take some time to find a group that works for your schedule and fits your game style. Can take a few tries (or even many) before finding a good group that vibes well for you.
This might be a dumb question, but as a 1st level Cleric I get to pick 3 cantrips. I also have an extra necromancy cantrip from death cleric and booming blade from high elf heritage. Can I only use 3 per day or can I use all of these any time I want?
So cantrips don't take or use spell slots and you can use them without worry.
So you can know 5 cantrips - 3 from your class, 1 from your subclass, and 1 from your heritage.
Awesome. Thanks.
Am awesome
i spent like a whole week making my character from a malenia clone to a somewhat original character but i multiclassed it to 2/3 of the coolness has to be hacked off for my first campaign. sad
how do you guys even deal with zombies? my first experience with dnd was at a convention where we learned how to play but the zombies kept reviving themselves for 45 minutes. i got doubts turn undead helps with that
Zombies can revive themself unless they got a critical hit or radiant damage.
would cleric deal said radiant damage?
all clerics can get a cantrip, Sacred Flame
but would that deal radiant damage fire or both?
If you are new, avoid multiclassing. It is a path that leads to disaster when not done correctly
Radiant. Dont rely on spell name to guess damage

Famously, there is a necromancy cantrip called Chill Touch that is neither a touch spell, nor does cold damage. It is ranged, necrotic
That is crazy in a geriatric government kinda way
i played around with renaming things on the character sheet so whatās stopping anyone from just calling it Necrotic Spear?
Nothing stopping you at all. Just let your DM know
Flavor is free, as long as youāre keeping everyone in the loop
got it
Warlock table says at first level I know 2 spells but I only have 1 slot does that mean I pick two spells but I can only use one?
This has come up a couple times this week, oddly
āSpell slotā (or pact slot, as warlock calls it) is NOT the same as āspells knownā
isnāt that like a cantrip thing
You know the # of spells that the table says you can know
Your spell/pact SLOTS are the resource you use to cast a leveled spell
As a lv 1 warlock, you know 2 spells. You have one slot to spend, on whichever spell you wanna cast
As you level up you will gain a second pact slot
and you can them cast two spells, among the ones you know
can i play a human who has a hamster companen
so the human is a criminal n the hamster is a druied
There are several subclasses that have companions and some spells that create companions of various forms
If you want a pet that is ONLY flavor, for role playing purposes, ask your DM if you can have a hamster. It will have no mechanical effect in battle, and do no actual work, but you can have it around
If you want a pet that actually does stuff, you will need to follow the rules of the subclass or spell that gives you a companion
Hi
Bye
well the hamster is but isnt a pet persayyyy
like the human doesnt own or control him any way they are a pair
iāve been thinking of simpler dnd characters to make but idk cause i spent so long on the first one and it basically turned to an unusable lore oc
You can call it a pet or not. My point remains, if you want a companion you can have it either:
- a role playing gimmick that doesnt do anything
Or - a mechanical feature from a subclass or spell that has to follow certain rules
The relationship you have to the companion is up to you
You made a common mistake of over-writing your backstory
Just remember you DONT PLAY you backstory. It exists to inform your character as it goes on an adventure at the table
Why would you blow a bunch of time on stuff that already happened?
Your backstory only needs to explain (lightly) personality, bonds, ideals, flawsā¦.basicallt, why would you go out, join a party, and adventure
All other detail is unnecessary
Well it did take up the entire backstory section on the character sheet⦠but i feel like i spent more time on the abilities and balancing or at least equal time
your backstory can be four lines
i was under the impression that i could multiclass and add all these caveats and limitations to make is balanced then it was like āno multiclass at lvl 1ā
zamn
So at level one Warlock, I know two level 1 spells but I can only use one, then at level 3, I know 4 spells but can only use two?
Correct
you can cast any spell you have a slot for of the necessary level or higher
Remember, Warlock is a unique caster in that it recovers its slots on a short rest; so in turn it gets far less slots to work with than other casters who have to wait until a longrest to recover them
Cantrips are spells that do not cost a spell slot
And at level 3, the 4 spells I pick all have to be second level spells?
You can pick spells of any level you can cast; your slots simply ARE second level slots and any spell you cast is upcasted to 2nd level (regardless of if it can be upcasted or not)
I made bowser from mario:
Big Turtle. Seeks princess. Provides jobs to fellow reptiles and fungus. Astronomy fan.
Thats it
They can be any level, up to what your pact slot levels is
At 4th level you have 2nd lv slots. You can pick any lv1 or 2 spells
I like a good Swiss cheese backstory.
Enough to give it shape, but full of holes.
Makes it easy for the DM to fill in the gaps and tie it into the story.
i liked writing the pages tho
I have leant away from backstories really, and now focus on goals for characters.
actually that sounds smart
And at level 3 I also get to pick two eldritch invocations, as long as I meet the prerequisite?
If you wanna write a novel, write a novel
But this is dnd. Wouldnt you rather play?
And unless you DM is specifically asking for a super detailed backstory, youāre just burning his time
Yes
Just follow the chart in the warlock section
Although warlocks are spellcasters, they operate very differently from sorcerers, bards, clerics or wizards who have many more slots but only recharge them on a long rest
The warlock has invocations that enhance its cantrips and (some) give free spells (like mask of many faces). It only has 2 spell slots but they are all of the higher level available and all spells are cast at that level. Save them for maximum impact
It says level 3 can know 4 spells, thatās not including the ones I get from the great one though so I really know 6 spells? And those will still cost a slot
The most gut wrenching advice iāve gotten so far but i feel like i needed to hear that. youāre goated for that
Everyone learns eventually
i havenāt even played the damn game yet like iāve literally gone on so many youtube videos about best subclasses n shit
i feel like iāve gotten ahead of myself for that
Warlock subclass spells are merely added to the warlock spell list.
worry less about ābestā and focus on simple and easy to execute
Youād have to choose them as your known spells to be able to cast them.
Pick a class with LESS to do so you can focus on roleplay and the basic mechanics. Thats why i recommend fighter
The Great Old One lets you choose from an expanded list of spells when you learn a warlock spell. The following spells are added to the warlock spell list for you.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheGreatOldOne
thatās literally the next character i was gonna make.
eventually subclasssing to echo knight cause i thought itād be funny
So the great ones spells arenāt extra? They count as the 4 I can pick?
Yes
Theyāre spells that other warlocks donāt have access to, but you still choose whether to learn them.
Hello everyone! š
Hello!
I'm new here š
Hi
As am I
@left comet Nice to meet you then.
I'm still pretty new to dnd but I know basic things
I don't know much basic. I haven't even played.
Nice to meet you too š

I was able to make two character sheets. Haven't played them yet.
Same
Whatād you make?
I use dnd beyond to make pre made ones
I used dnd beyond as well. I made a wood elf ranger and a tiefling rogue
I just made a human fightee
Nice š
Thanks
I have made 2 characters that I really want to play, aside from that I played in a campaign for about a month or 2 which is on break, so I'm still getting used to the rules
I made the Tiefling out of anger actually lol
Cool
I haven't dipped my toes in that yet lol
I just know the basic action moves like move and fight
Oh, I don't. It's on the character sheet. But, I made Pdfs. Eventually, I want to draw them out.
Also I don't mess around with potions spells and wizards yet
The character I played in that campaign was a ranger, so all I really did was stand back and shoot things lol
Cool
Nice š
Thereās a good cheatsheet here for those.

- where is the enemy
- where am i
- where do i wanna be?
A starting point for combat
If I choose Fiend for Warlock I can have burning hands as one of my two spells immediately?
Yep
I got a question. Is there a clear way to explain the rules to me?
Are you asking about a particular rule/set of rules...or all of the rules?
Reading the rules is a pretty good way to learn them in the long run. There's some pretty good resources in the pinned message here in the channel for getting folks started with D&D.
That said, you don't need to memorize the rules - rather get a general feel for them and you'll likely pick up the majority of the game through playing it.
Very handy, thx
I tried looking it up and I was a bit confused.
Im still an L1 and getting to know the game.
I've been playing this game (and other RPGs) for years and I still mess the rules up. The important point though is to have fun.
What does the handbook mean when for Warlock it says āThe table also shows what the level of those slots is; all of your spell slots are the same level.ā
Warlocks have a limited amount of spell slots - they always cast their leveled spells (not cantrips) at the highest spell slot level they know because of the warlock's pact magic feature. This and refreshing spell slots on short rest is a defining feature of the warlock class.
Warlocks only ever have spell slots for a single level, but that level increases over time.
So first they can only cast 1st-level spells.
And then at level three, your spell slots all become 2nd-level.
(Youād upcast any 1st-levels spells you know to 2nd-level.)
Whereas a cleric, for example, would have both 1st- and 2nd-level spell slots and could choose which to use.
The other key difference is that warlocks regain their expended spell slots after a short rest.
All other casters need a long rest.
Oh so even at level 20 if I want to cast a level one spell like hex itāll take up a level 5 spell slot
yes
I know they get them back after a short rest but doesnāt that suck? Or the invocations really make up for it
You can also only go to level 5 spells
They get whatās known as Mystic Arcanum to cast even higher-leveled spells.
Each class has unique features - the cast leveled spells at the highest spell slot level all the time, refresh spell slots on short rest, and get invocations and other Warlock-only features is what makes a Warlock a Warlock. Just like Action Surge is a defining feature of Fighters.
Depending on what invocations you take, they can empower you significantly. The EB invocations alone strengthen your damage and can give you further battlefield control. So aye, they are great for what they do
Whether it sucks is a matter of personal opinion, but itās a pretty popular class nonetheless.
Thats the tradeoff that makes warlocks unique. And their cantrips and invocations are meant to offset that
It makes warlock a customizable class, but less versatile than other spellcasters
Whether thats good or bad is up to your preference
Hello
Hey there!
Can I make my familiar cast eldritch blast? It says āwhen you cast a spell with a range of touch, your familiar can deliver the spell as if it had cast the spell.ā
Eldritch Blast doesn't have a range of touch but a 120 ft range
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/eldritch-blast
Whats the difference
Touch is when you touch the target within melee range.
Range is when you shoot something up to X ft.
So my familiar can do stuff like shocking grasp
Yes.
How can I find quick pick up games, other than posting in looking for dm....
You might consider joining a West March server.
Those are a bunch of players and DMs all playing in a large shared world together.
And whoeverās free can just start playing together.
Makes it really easy to jump in, but you may end up playing with different people each time.
Youād find those advertised here in #looking-for-community.
That's fine. Just want to start getting some more experience playing.
Is casting time how long it takes to cast the spell or long it lasts
We do indeed have a channel called #find-a-game.
āchoose three cantrips from any classās spell list.ā For pact of the tome, does that mean I choose one class then the cantrips from that class or any three cantrips
When you gain this feature, choose three cantrips from any classās spell list (the three neednāt be from the same list).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#PactBoon-389
So any three cantrips in the game.
Oh thats weird the handbook doesnt have that in parenthesis
Ah, it looks like that was added through errata.
https://media.wizards.com/2021/dnd/downloads/PH-Errata.pdf
So if youāve got an earlier printing, it wouldnāt be there.
Can you use two bonus actions in one turn?
no
you only get one per turn, and you cannot exchange an action for a bonus action. There are no ways of getting additional bonus actions
sorcerers and wizards can cast Time Stop once they can cast 9th level spells, which will give you extra turns in a round, and Thief Rogues can also get extra turns at 17th level, but never more than one bonus action in a single turn
Hello, I've been roleplaying on discord for quite a long time now, but I finally want to get into DND. How do I get started?
- Learn the basics and enjoy a short adventure with our quick introductory demo.
- The Basic Rules are available at no cost and cover everything you need to know to play.
- For bite-sized video explanations, check out Critical Role's Handbooker Helper series.
- Create a character digitally on D&D Beyond or print a character sheet to fill out by hand.

Start by checking out the basic rules, linked in the bot post above
I would read at least the first four chapters on character creation
Thank you!
Do bonus action spells use up a spell slot?
Yes
No matter the casting time a levelled spell still uses a spell slot
A bonus action cantrip still doesnāt
Basically casting time doesnāt change anything else
What does it mean when it says speed is X amount of feet?
You can move that many feet as your movement
Why does it say speed is feet though
Bc wotc is American
I mean feet is distance, speed is how fast you are like āHow fast are you?ā ā5 feetā I donāt get it
Read what I said here
That is how many feet you can move on your turn
I know shouldnāt it be ādistanceā
If you have a speed of 30 you can move a total of 30 feet on your turn
No itās how fast you can move
Think of it as feet per turn
The same with fire bolt it says its a āmote of fireā a mote is a tiny particle how can u throw tht
It would look like a firefly
If thatās the way you imagine a fire bolt working then yes
There is no such thing as an ordinary owl or chair. There could be a little magic in everything. or its just a chair, but atleast have a look at it
Cool?
Is this pertaining to another convo or just out of the blue?
I mean itās their second message in this server
And their first was just āletās goooā
So im guessing itās just out of the blue
Fair.
It says clothes can be an arcane focus does that mean all clothes or can it be like as long as Iām wearing specific shoes or a belt or something
Where does it say that?
That sounds like it may be coming from some homebrew (user made content) or third party content (content made by a company other than Wizards of the Coast). As such, the question would be better for #homebrew or #third-party
@lyric fjord good luck and have fun
Thank you, I definitely will
In the arcane focus list it says clothes
In the basic rules?
No it doesn't
Iām looking at it
Crystal, orb, rod, staff, and wand are the listed arcane focus items. Clothes are not in that list
Page 150
A Holy Symbol (which is different from an arcane focus) can be placed on a shield or clothing if worn openly, but clothing itself is not an arcane focus
Oh in the book it says a long list of stuff after arcane focus but those things have a space in front of them
Which book?
The handbook
Player's Handbook, Page 150?
Yea
yes. The indentation is how they created a list. Only the items with the indentation immediately after are listed as arcane focus items. Same if you look at Ammunition, Druidic Focus, or Holy Symbol.
I thought what it says after arcane focus and before druidic focus was all arcane focus stuff
no...Those are a variety of other items and equipment
the adventuring gear page is not a page of nearly just foci for spellcasting
Ye I see that now I didnt know notice the space before the words but to be be fair someone told me here one time that it was all that stuff
Could someone help me put together a Changeling character? š I'm feeling overwhelmed
You want #character-discussion, someone there should be able to lend you a hand
thanks!

Hi
Does using a magic initiate spell cost a spell slot
Whatās the feat say?
Moved to #dnd-rules
Got to #find-a-game read the instructions to post an ad

What does arcane focus do?
I think it's just the thing your spells come from
Like if you choose a staff you cast spells from your staff
Have you read the section on spell casting?
Link to that section
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Components
It replaces the need for certain material components (any that don't have a gold cost and aren't consumed by casting the spell).
So instead of needed a tiny ball of bat guano and sulfur to cast Fireball, you'd just need your staff.
But it wouldn't help with a spell like Continual Flame.
ruby dust worth 50 gp, which the spell consumes
I thought they let you cast more concentration spells??
Nope
Isnt that what component bag does
Component pouches and spellcasting focuses serve the same role.
I don't believe there's anything in the game that lets you cast two concentration spells at once.
Hmm
And I'm not sure what you would have read that led you to that belief.
So it doesnt at all affect concentration?
It does not.
I didnt understand what I was reading anyways
Not RAW. There is a critical role subclass from Tal'dorei Reborn that allows more than one concentration spell at a time, but believe there are consequences for using that ability
FWIW, the DMG explicitly warns against adding anything that does that.
I rember smth like that
There was also bout 3 attunements
How much damage is a scratch in dnd? And how much is for example a deep cut?
D&D doesn't get into such minute rules, so that would be up to an individual DM.
The rules just say how damage certain action result in: a sword does 1d8 (or whatever), not how serious the wound is, regardless of how true it strikes. Instead of thinking about how the world works and imposing that onto the game, you have to think about the game's rules and how those map onto the world.
Hit points don't represent just physical damage, they're not (as people often say) "meat points"
3 damage to a level 1 wizard is half their health, but 3 damage to a level 20 barbarian is nearly unnoticeable. Don't think of damage as an exact number equating a wound. A massive cut in a level 1 wizard's chest and a massive cut in a level 20 Barbarian's will have very different damage values
A deep cut could be 1 hit point lost or 20 depending on a lot of factors
It's all narrative
Sometimes if you roll a low number the dm will say you only scratched him and did one damage or something like that
An attack can "hit" but not physically connect yet you'll still lose hit points because maybe it wears down your stamina or your resolve or will to fight or even just your luck
Taking 10 damage from fireball may mean a serious burn, or it may mean the dive you made to get out of the way of the blast has left you shaken and off balance and that means you're closer to being dealt that killing blow
If you really wanted to, you could say that the first 99 damage of a character's 100 health are near misses, and that their good luck is all gone. The final damage could pierce their heart. It's all flavor!
Ultimately, hit points only track how much more damage the creature can take before it's knocked unconscious or dies. Everything else is set dressing.
Thatās a nice way to think of it
If I multi class from Druid to barbarian can I wear chain mail
Neither druid or barbarian get proficiency with heavy armor, unfortunately
Even if they did, wearing heavy armor would remove almost every benefit from raging as a barbarian!
Oh ok
If you're looking to find a way to wear heavy armor as a druid, look into the Heavily Armored feat
I meant the chain shirt medium armor
