Pretty sure it’s linked in #find-a-game already, but done. ✅
Hey all. I am new to DND and I just wanted to see if yall can help me as I make my first game as a dm
im lowkey having trouble choosing a setting. i know that this is for me to decide, but generally speaking, what would yall prefer. an ancient greece type game(gonna go for a hercules trying to do his 12 feats story) and that sort of aesthetic, or would yall prefer more of a GOT type aesthetic with dragons and stuff like that. differnet families, differnet kingdoms?
What would your players prefer?
thats the thing, they dont really have a preference
what i have planned for the greek one is some sort of alternate reality where Hercules dies and the team has to complete his 12 feats
And the 12 labors sounds like a pretty workable campaign structure.
exactly
And you could grab plenty of ideas from books like Mythic Odysseys of Theros or Odyssey of the Dragonlords.
ooh
u know whats hilariouys
now the guys are actually telling me their preferences. after hours of nonstop going back and forth of everyone saying they dont care either way
I’m headed to bed, I’m afraid. 😅
But there’s plenty of folks in #dm-discussion or #dm-world-building if you want some more opinions.
yeah alright. just had a few more questions didnt wonna spam chat. honestly for the better
oh i didnt know about that i just joined the server, thanks and gn
Ask away! That’s what the server’s here for.
lol i guess youre right
I'm new to discord. Where do I go to find games or dms recruiting players?
Check out #find-a-game
It did not even occur to me until just now that I should join a server like this, this is so clever

@lyric fjord
There's plenty to check out in there and feel free to ask questions in here!
Is there certain posts for games that help new people or do I just pick one?
Ask the DM in the thread under the ad you’re interested in
I would also recommend reading the basic rules before joining a game if you haven’t already
hey everyone, i'm not necessarily new to D&D. However i am new to the D&D discord community and haven't played D&D in quite some time now and I am a big fan and have played alot in the past. i am also a huge magic the gathering fan, player and collector.
im interested in meeting some people and playing some D&D
i also play the D&D oline game, classic game and i love it.
Welcome! Mayyyyybe not the perfect place to find games, but a great place to discuss DMing, rules, characters and the play test!
Hi I have never played DnD in my life but I have gotten the jist of it from listening to podcasts and such, and I just can’t find anybody to play with near me so I’m looking to find an online game
I am interested i lost all my D&D stuff along time ago and after that I kind of feel out of the D&D world. my wife and my son knows how much a nerd I am and she knows I love D&D and bought me the D&D starter kit and the D&D essentials kit for fathers day.
@pale kite im looking for the same thing some online playing. we should start a group together. get a few more people together and start our journeys lol. i do have a place near me that play but its rare and they mostly play MTG
Check out #find-a-game for instructions on navigating the LFG parts of the server.
We have #character-discussion for discussing concepts. And you might get a bit more specific about what kind of ideas you’re looking for so people can give you more targeted responses!

thank you!
Hello all thanks for having me!
Complete noob question but
Can I change my spells? I chose something that wasn't faerie fire and now I really want faerie fire. I didn't read the desc properly at first
Lvl 2 artificer
Artificers can change their spells following a long rest.
I thought that was just like what spells are currently active (ie spell slot stuff)
Does it also apply to spells you didn't choose when lvling up?
Artificers are prepared casters, meaning that at the top of each day, they decide what to have ready to cast from their whole list of spells (provided they have the appropriate slots).
Ohhh I see. Is it possible to do so for cantrips aswell then?
Cantrips, no, but you can check with your DM. I let folks adjust their choices if they're really not happy with them.
I think maybe you can change cantrips on a level up with an optional rule.
Ah no worries that's still awesome! I just really wanted faerie fire
I thought it was a boring light ability but no
Faerie Fire is great.
Yeah! Somehow I managed to gloss over the advantage part. I thought it was like a singular light spell that is basic for most
The spell that does that is the aptly-named Light.
Im new and never played before and I was wondering if i need to talk to a DM beforehand if I want to play a ranger. Just feels like a lot of situational stuff
Need to, no. But the ranger is one of those classes that the experience can be enhanced by having an open line of communication with the DM.
Yeah, definitely a good idea. You don't want to pick Celestials as your favored foe and then never fight a Celestial. 😅
Or pick the coast as your favored terrain and then spend the whole campaign landlocked.
But if you know the campaign's all about fighting dragons in the mountains, then it's an easy choice.
A DM might also want to discuss with you other options for playing Ranger. There's a revised version of the class in another rulebook, and its a character creation option that they might recommend. It makes it less situational and more general.
The Tasha’s version is indeed vastly superior but it is technically “optional” so talk to your DM. And if permitted, definitely use all of the tashas optional replacement features
@versed fog have fun
damn yes theres a newcomers channel thank you
i need some help homebrewing a magic item
I have no idea how this game works haha

well thanks
thats very helpful ty
@soft shard have fun
oh thanks so much i'm sure i will
one final question (for now maybe) do i have to read books and stuff before playing or is it ok to read while play as a beginner cuz i saw youtube videos recommending d&d books
It's at least a good idea to read (or at least skim) the rules -https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules - so you know kind of how the game works mechanically. I also recommend learning a bit how your character and class work.
yeah i wanted to know about the races and classes before making a character i thought i had to read a whole book for that thanks
The dnd beyond character creator will list all the available races and classes for you
yeah its just i wanna know more about what makes each race and class different and special before choosing
You can search it up, ask here, or it should give you some more info when you click on the race or class
Races: https://www.dndbeyond.com/races
Classes: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
thanks again both of u

What do you think is the best option for improving my navigation at fourth level if I already put Rogue's "Expertise" into survival for that 2x proficiency
Asi Wisdom
1 level of Ranger so I can never get lost in two biomes of my choice
Keen mind feat so I always know what direction is north, always know how many hours till daylight, and remember everything I've seen or heard in the last 30 days
Yes I know this is a terrible idea but it's a one shot and it's ✨ thematic ✨ for my character
Keen mind I think
Probably keen mind or some thematic spell selection like Find the Path or something like that. What level ranger?
Oh nvm I just read it's a rogue with a ranger dip
Also this is probably more a #character-discussion question
can i choose a race that isnt in the basic rules or maybe not in d&d beyond?
That's up to the DM; some don't allow homebrew, and some restrict race choices even from the official list.
so i should join a party before creating my character?
If you create a character before joining a game/group, you're esentially making a character for practice—which is great. It'll help you learn some of the game's rules and mechanics.
But you should have multiple character concepts that can be tweaked so they fit whatever game/group you ultimately join.
Don't have your heart set on one single character.
ohh ok i got it ty
In this notation:
"Action Melee Attack. Melee Weapon Attack: +# to hit, reach # ft., # target. Hit: # (#d# + #) [damage type] damage."
What does **Attack: +# to hit, ** mean?
Oh wait
I asked the wrong thing
I meant **Hit: # **
That’s the average damage for the dice roll that follows.
Hit: 7 (2d4 + 2) slashing damage.
7 is the average of 2d4 + 2.
Oh, is it necessary to include?
It’s presented as an alternative to rolling for DMs who want to speed up combat.
Ah I understand
But you’d choose one or the dice.
The average or the roll.
Hit. Any damage dealt or other effects that occur as a result of an attack hitting a target are described after the "Hit" notation. You [the DM] have the option of taking average damage or rolling the damage; for this reason, both the average damage and the die expression are presented.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/monsters#MeleeandRangedAttacks
The average would be essentially be half of the maximum roll?
(max + min) / 2
Max here is 10, min is 4. Halfway between that is 7.
(Max+Min)/2 + 0.5
I don’t think that’s accurate.
Is this good for a bard;
Strength 9
Dexterity 15
Constitution 11
Intelligence 14
Wisdom 13
Charisma 16
Half of 1d6 is 3.5. (6+1)/2.
Swap Con and Int
Okay! Thanks you guys
This is how they do HP averages for players if you don't take the roll
Yeah, but HP rounds up.
Yeah, they round up that last 0.5
Averages in monster attacks would round down.
mmm, right right
Is it common to play with encumbrance / coin weight? I’ve only played without it
None of my games use those.
Nice okay cause I left it out haha
You’re using D&D Beyond, I assume?
You should check with your DM on all those settings.
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d just leave them all at the defaults.
Yes! I am
So if I know 4 spells as a bars but have two spell slots; I can use any spell I want out of my 4 but only 2 times?
correct
Sorry I mean 2 of the spells per cooldown or whatever it is
Thank you; am I asking too many questions or is this the appropriate channel I don’t wanna be annoying
I am curled up with the handbook rn but I get confused 😂
2 per long rest, yeah.
you will be able to use 2 spells per long rest as a Bard. You can either flex your choice of spells, or utilize spells with the Ritual tag among your prepared spells so that you may ritually cast them without expending a spell slot
And ask away! That’s what the channel’s here for.
Okay perfect I wasn’t sure this was for just chat or question too haha thank you
But yeah, ritual spells are handy.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#Rituals
And your cantrips don’t use spell slots either, so you can cast those as often as you like.
Yes I do actually remember that from the one shot I did because I just kept making the room shake with my clerics like… miracle cantrip or something lmao
Thaumaturgy, yeah.
Lol we got mauled tho and I ran out of spell slots so I was just trying to knock a candle over that was this hags source of power 😭 we all died
Could I create an move that induces knockback on a target but not direct damage?
Something like a strong gust of wind
I checked the wiki and it said that knockback applies when a target takes an attack that has a greater mass of force than the target, moving back 5ft for every 5 points of damage
Are you talking about a spell or something like Shoving?
I mean if this is something you're homebrewing, you can look to the spell Gust of Wind for inspiration and just change out the movement penalty for a knockback
It’s the very old looking one
Something out of the DynaTac era
I dont know all the spells 😔
right right, there is Gust. Does a 5ft knockback on a failed Strength save
I’m going for a mischievous little bard guy who is a trickster so I’m thinking minor illusion cantrip andddd idk if I want friends or prestidigitation
Are you looking for other opinions or just thinking out loud?
LOL opinions 😭😭
I feel like Prestidigitation sounds more in line with someone looking to cause mischief, whereas Friends seems like it's fitting for someone who wants to smooth talk their way through situations.
I was thinking that too; but I was thinking friends as a way to get out of situations but then I realize when it ends they’ll still be angry so now that I’m typing this I am going to agree with you about prestidigitation
Welcome back to the hobby. Did you play a previous edition?
well lets just say I played the original, 2nd edition. I have played 5e but only for 1 month but that was a few years ago
I even still have my char from 2nd edition and first edition
Nice. Well, if you need a refresher, check out the pinned messages in this channel. There's a demo, the rules, a video playlist, and instructions for using our looking-for-game/group channels.
yea I have been looking up the info. a lot to take in lol.
I even made a pally char.
the dice gods were nice to me today
Do you guys think I should do healing word or cure wounds? Is the difference really just if you touch them or not
I am still trying to learn the D&D Beyond program
Cure Wounds has more healing but a limited range. Healing Word flips that. I tend to take both because I'm an over-preparer, but if I have to choose, I go with Healing Word because it can get somebody back in the fight even at a distance.
But would you say healing word does less healing?
Check the spell description: it heals, just less than Cure Wounds.
I just wasn’t sure and the d4 vs d8 stuff
A d# is a dice with that many sides. So a d4 has a 4 as its highest value, whereas a d8 would have 8 as the upper limit.
Oh so if I did healing word it’s actualy only 1d7 vs the cure wounds 1d8
Cause it’s 1d4+ my spellcastibg which is 3
Or I guess whatever i roll plus 3
Exactly!
I probs sound so dumb just trying to figure it out
I’m normally nervous asking questions some people are mad condescending 😭
We get new folks literally every day; there's no reason to assume this is obvious information.
You're good.
Well I appreciate how helpful you are @harsh fjord
I had good teachers help me, so I try to pay it forward.
Thunderwave affects my companions right
Yep. The key is to read the spell description. "All creatures in an area" means everyone; "creatures you choose" means you can keep your friends safe (or use a buff on them but NOT on the enemies).
If they're in the radius.
Hmmmhmhmhmh so I’m thinking it won’t be worth it since I’ll probably be by their sides a lot early on
You can do whatever works for you, but I try to work out my spell choices in concert with the group so we all shore up each other's weaknesses.
Well perhaps I can be longer range and use healing word too
If you want to talk more about spell choices and build decisions, we have #character-discussion for that. This channel is for getting people oriented and covering the basics.
How come they didn't break down the spells to each class in the players handbook? makes no sense.
What do you mean?
they have all the spells in alphabetical order
Oh I know what you mean; i just legit was in those pages
Why WotC makes the design decisions they do isn't something the rest of us can comment on. Maybe they'll change it with the 2024 rules books.
I think it’s because multiple classes use the same spells and it would be a waste of space repeating the same spells and descriptions repeatedly
So instead they make us hunt 😭
There's also tools like D&D Beyond and Roll20 to make that kind of search easier.
If I use all my movement and take the ready action to move can I basically do a delayed dash
I think they meant to descriptions
And how they have to go back and forth through the pages that follow with every spell listed alphabetically
I would say not following Rules as Written.
When you take the Dash action, you gain extra movement for the current turn.
Readying an action means your turn is over, instead using your reaction later in the round when a trigger occurs, so Dash would no longer be possible.
Thank you Dun.
so what books would I need to start playing? I have the players hand book hard copy that I have bought years ago.
If it's the fifth edition PHB, you're good to go.
yea its the 5th edition.
Anything beyond the PHB is just added material: subclasses, spells, and optional rules. There's also the Monster Manual and Dungeon Master's Guide, but those aren't as central as the PHB is to playing. They can help in running the game, however.
Thank you
I asked if it was possible, I've read online that it's how much a creature can move in a single round, but I've also read that it's "reset" after your turn ends so moving after your turn would work with ready action and I'm unsure which to belive
Ultimately, that's a #dnd-rules question rather than something to be covered here.
Oh ok il just ask there then
so how would online play work with new char? you would make one in the online game?
Typically you'd make a new character for a new game.
They'll likely have specifics regarding character creation: allowed/banned races, stats method, XP vs. milestone.
I like the xp version. People play milstone?
what does Tool Proficiencies exactly mean in the character sheet
It's easier to track.
I prefer it such that I'll never use XP.
really?
It means you add your proficiency bonus when doing a skill involving those tools.
I need to look up that milestone and see how it works
If you are proficient in a tool, such as Thieves' Tools, you add your Proficiency Bonus when using it.
what should i choose my tool based on?
What is your character?
a half-elf rogue
So what is asking you to choose a tool?
its really a lot of stuff
Your character's class and/or background gives you tools and/or proficiency in them.
confusing tbh
Why are you picking a tool? What part of the character creation process is giving you that option?
description
Can you be more specific?
Pick your class and background. They will give you the tools and the proficiency in them.
it really just says Tool Proficiencies: in the description page
The page for what?
for the background?
ok ty
So what OMYAC was saying is right: you have to pick your background and that will give you a tool proficiency. It will usually specify rather than giving you a wide-open option.
are there any practice campaigns for new people to play around or nothing like that yet?
thanks dun
any games going on that I could watch do you know of?
Check out the "Before the Storm" demo:

man forgotten realms was my place back in 2nd edition
It's still here.
brings back memories
Evening all
Hello
Super stoked. Picked up the essentials kit. 31 and finally taking myself from "that looks like fun" to "let's learn how and start playing" gotta start somewhere right?
lol yea.
Well it was either get myself a hobby or my husband was gonna try and teach me magic the gathering again... So confusing
Dnd is confusing but its easier to learn (in my opinion)
Friend of ours has been a player for a while and he has branched into becoming a DM here the last year. So he and I and a few friends are gonna start together here soon. As well, a card/game shop near my house has weekly D&D meetups and so I'm on their socials to see when the next campaign DM will start signing up people to select players
Now I just have to create a character. So currently reading through the essentials kit to see how I'm gonna base it. Also my hubby recommended the fifth edition players handbook? Any thoughts on whether the additional book is necessary
what lvl do normally DM start with?
Depends on the party
If there’s some noobs level 1 is good
lol <==== old noob
I’m pretty sure the essentials kit contains the phb
Sorry no it doesn’t
In the kits book it had a section also that was like" for more information on character building look at the phb" so I was like... You need a whole other book? Lol
But you should be fine without it for now
That stuff is in the basic rules
Which are free online
Ahh gotcha
Good because I was not about to spend 30 bucks on a random book I may not need.
🙂

@wind geyser handbook helper on YouTube another great resource
Im new to the server an not the game, yall consider damn a swear word or na
Hi everyone, I'm new to D&D and I've been doing my best to read up on the core source materials (phb and dmg). I'm currently wanting to run a duet adventure as a DM with someone in-person, but I have a question about classes and duet adventures. There are a few duet adventures available on DMsguild and I've opted for First Blush, since it's designed for beginner players. Everything is pretty set up for it but I'm wondering how best to scale for level 1 characters in a duet setting. My player wants to play a wizard, but I get the impression that duet does not lend itself very well to a level 1 wizard, which is what the adventure is asking for. Should I just fudge some of the numbers until it feels better? Perhaps the wizard's starting HP?
For instance, there's an encounter fairly early on involving two level 1 npcs the player must fight simultaneously, which perform reduced damaged, but still easily enough to wipe out a level 1 wizard depending on initiative
I would say to create encounters that compliment it well but only untill the wizard gets their footing
What is the other class in the duo?
It's a short one-shot adventure, so there's nothing beyond level 1 unfortunately
There's no other class, just a solo player and a DM
One on one, DM and player setup
It's a curated adventure designed as such for the purpose
Have you tried looking up certain encounters? Also when i was running games for a bit, in the begining i would give people/monsters a different person/monsters stat
Thanks for the advice everyone 🙂
Hello, I am completely new to D&D and i am asking for guidance on where to start learning it.
Missed that part
Ah nvm i just scrolled up
I think I'll try and adjust the enemies on the fly to make it a fun experience
Seems like the best option
If you are worried that an encounter is too tricky, there are DM tricks to keep the same number of enemies but make the fight a bit more manageable.
For example, staggering the entrance of the enemies to the battlefield, or putting them 200 feet away so it takes them x number of turns to arrive at the players.
I threw 16 Twig Blights at a party consisting of a level 1 Bard and a level 2 fighter using the second method. It was tense and frantic, but they pulled it off
That's another great idea, thanks for the recommendation
I say "party" it was actually me and chatgpt 🤣
Also because im new to the server, can you post gifs? And if so, Is it an earned thing?
That's my other tip. Chatgpt knows the rules so you can workshop ideas in play without torturing players first haha
Ok thanks. I've been interested in D&D for such a long time now but don't know where to look.
I do wonder if duet is the right way to go as my first DM experience, but I figure it's easier to go into this with an inexperienced player but a friend with low expectations lol, so I can improve and feel more comfortable playing in a group setting
Well it lies convincingly enough to get through a few rounds of combat at least
I didnt
I did play around with chatgpt for a text-based adventure with d&d rules, but the token limit was a little challenging to have anything more than some loosely linked encounters and that sort of thing
I suggested using it to workshop encounter design
I'll definitely give that a shot, sounds like a useful resource
Hi there! I'm a newbie and I wanted to ask, what are the top 10 things a dm should know?
Thanks dunl 🙂
Chatgpt doesnt know anything, it just guesses the most probable combination of words and phrases based on all of the material it has access to
Literally
It’s a glorified combination of a search engine and predictive text
Virtual Intelligence would be a better description of ChatGPT than Artificial Intelligence.
Simulated intelligence
would you recommend some free, one-shot(less than 4 hours of playtime), 1st tier adventures for new dm and players? preferably something that has experience and mood of typical d&d fantasy setting! i am prepping the lost mine of phandelver and i find it too long to lure casual players.
wild sheep chase is pretty popular for this. not sure if you can always do it in less than 4 hours, especially with new players but I think its possible to do in less than 6 for sure
any good reasons to use short bow instead of long bow?
Short bows have extra dmg to short ppl
Nah but seriously, from a gameplay standpoint its easier to be stealthy with a shortbow, and they are more convenient
Small races will also have disadvantage when using a longbow (even if proficient) because of the heavy property. Beyond that, nothing mechanically per se beyond just needing proficiency to use a longbow 🤷
Depends on dm, hard to hide in bushes with a big longbow poking out
if you are a small race or if you arent proficient in longbows
Oh
I had proficient im both, so... Shortbow is usless when you can handle longbow, right?
longbows would generally be an upgrade over shortbow then, yes
Right. It's a direct upgrade - just one that isn't open to everyone.
ill check that one out! thanks
also checking that one out. thank you!
What would people say are classes/subclasses that newer players should avoid?
wizard can be overwhelming with spell choices
There aren't any that are unplayable, but Wizard, Druid and Warlock can be more complicated, and so are less accessible to new players.
id recommend the very very first time, better to choose fighter, rogue, barbarian, monk.
Wizards are not that bad at level 1 you get 2 bigs spells then have to fire bolt people for the rest of the day
That’s accurate to like… every full caster-
Yup
Most of the classes get better at all their "core abilities" as they progress. Druids are a little weird in that you have to choose which core ability to really focus on - Wild Shape, Spell Casting, or summons, depending on subclass. That can be a bit confusing for a new player, because they might wonder why their Wild Shape feels so underwhelming and useless in combat, or their spellcasting feels so weak.
So the consensus is generally wizard and Druid? (And maybe warlock)
I think the consensus is that if you were playing with a group where one person was a little bit more worried about keeping up, then you would guide that player more towards fighter, rogue, barbarian - but really any class can be taken on by any player.
I’d let a newcomer play what ever class they wanted, everyone had to learn them at some point, they might take a while to get used to them but as a DM I’m there to help and guide them

I wouldn't suggest telling new players to AVOID some classes, but the way I word it at my table is, "Since you are new, I would probably recommend fighter, or barbarian. However, any of the classes are there for you to freely use." Then I just make sure I give them the added help either online during the game, or offline outside of the game if they want/need/ask for it. I just finished a game in November that was a 3 year campaign. 5 players, and only 1 of them ever played D&D before, but never 5e. It was a fun experience for all. We had one guy that followed the recommendation of fighter, and he had a horrible time, so after talking to him for awhile about what he normally played in RPG's and MMO's, he decided to try a Wizard, and he fell completely in love with the game after that.
Well, that was generally what I meant, but fair enough
I've been at tables where the DM locked the new players to just the basics.. So, I always clarify 🙂
Ew.
Speaking of DMs, what is the main job of a DM?
To run th game?
Are they the ones telling the stories and what happens next..etc?
Aye
The main job of a DM, is to bring joy to their players, and hopefully themselves through the telling of a story, acting occasionally as the rules lawyer, and ofc, they are the supreme deity of their world.
Is Dungeon Master just a title? or is it like a title I need to earn? Like, I'm a new comer, what if I interested in being a DM rather than a Player?
I see.
It’s a lot more effort, that’s for sure
I think of a DM as a stage manager - they set the stage, invite the actors (players) to interact with the presented story elements, decides what rules are in effect and what dice rolls are needed, then helps guide the story forward. They also provide the background actors (NPCs - non-player characters) and play their roles.
dungeon master is just the name for the player who runs the game for others, not something you have to earn through set trials
Got it.
would be funny though, just three more trials and I can call myself an experienced DM
You also have to acknowledge, no matter what you plan for, maps you make, handouts you rock, arc's you plan.. Your party will still spend the entire session in the tavern.
Or shopping.
Or seducing the BBEG and running off into the sunset with him.. :/
lol
I've actually had that happen...
Uhh
If it hadn't been that it was back in the late 90's.. I'd have called it a pure Scanlan moment... lol
Elaborate?
@scarlet harness it's not very common for creatures to be resistant to only one of slashing, piercing and bluldgeoning. It's quite common for them to be resistant to all of them, or vulnerable to one of them.
As a player, you shouldn't know except by trying.
or via an ability that reveals that.
Otherwise, you have meta-gamed
I was a player in that campaign. But, one of our players decided her character ( a useless little bard mind you in 3.5e 😛 ) could get the greedy arrogant count who was destroying the country in order to lead a coup against the throne, was her type.. Annnd, after many high rolls, and many weeks of working on him, she convinced him to give up and retire with her to the country.
Yup, I mean I've the info because the other players met these kind of enemies in the campain so they gave me the info
Usually a DM will feed back like "your hit lands, but it doesn't leave much of a mark". If they do then tell you how much damage it takes, which they may or may not, it would be halved if they are resistant.
So you see why some players will take multiple weapons. A scimitar is a shortsword, but with slashing damage instead.
Where can I find the rules and info on familiars?
Above table knowledge shouldnt affect the PCs knowledge
I know, tho it wasn't the case here !
From what spell? Find Familiar, is in the Basic Rules.
Relevant to both comments currently, last session I just watched the barbarism (for some reason he found black pudding a funny and had read about them for no reason. (We are all new) just pull out the massive tree/great club he had, even though he had very clearly had his great sword out. Was very defensive when we accused him of meta-gaming
Btw 4 initiative is kinda low no?
Oh I wasn’t sure if the find familiar spell was only a quick description for the spell and if there was more information elsewhere
You mean +4 to initiative rolls or…?
A +4 is pretty good!
Yes +4
Each spell that summons companions, familiars, guardians, etc has it's own flavor for how they are handled.
That means your total will be 20% higher than it would be without that.
I've 19 actually but yea
Same diff
A lot of characters might have +0 to initiative so…
Oof
Oh you know what I only read the first paragraph 😁 lol. So I am really only limited to the animals listed? I want a winged cat
That's entirely up to your DM, I tend to let people flavor their familiars any way they want and make statblocks for them.
True
Or bard.. or Rogue..
I figured people would be lenient with it; I mean the point is to have fun
16 is pretty good
16’s average, I’d say.
Exactly how I run with it. I've got one player that is using the rainbow flying cat from the misfit's book as their familiar. I just had to tweak the stats down abit.
Except for all the spellcastera with 10.
The monk in our party has 20 AC, that's dumb
Monks and Barbarians get their AC from multiple stats. If you want to be an AC monster, make a tortle barbarian.
I’m torn between flying cat or lizard monkey
Decent DEX and Mage Armor will get you 14-16.
Fair
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/3509309-rain. Always a good thing 🙂
Are there any creatures like the Clabbert from Harry Potter
How do I know how many superiority die I've
Thank you!
Have you read the battle master subclass
OHHHH I have monsters if the multiverse and the original monster book; do you think they have this one in hard cover irl lol
I honestly forgot, didn't play for 2 weeks
I think I had 4
You have 5 at level 7.
Oh well 5, I was close
Nah, this was a digital release for charity.
4 at level 3-6, 5 at 7-15, and 6 past level 15.
Oh for charity I better buy it
Newcomer tip #37 read your character sheet
I wrote it
I think you are just jumping too far in the deep end for a new player. A multiclassed level 10 character is not a good place to begin at. I don't even think some of my players who have been going for a year would do well in that scenario.
Use slashing weapons
Swap your shortswords for scimitars
or your slasher feat for the piercer feat, if the DM will allow it.
Level 10's rather a .. lot to learn for a new player out of the gate..
Yea, I mean I'll swap weapons later but as for now I feel dumb picking that feat lol
I adapt really fast
And I don't start from nothing
But yea, that's quite a lot to learning
Having played Baldur's Gate like you have, I don't think it's that helpful for learning the rules of DnD - while it uses a lot of similar thinking under the hood, it's just that - under the hood.
I mean, it helped me to build my class
I already knew about the feats, stats spread, AC etc...
Yes, but as we are discussing, there's some gaps where there's totally unfamiliar elements to the TTRPG.
Its somewhat like trying to drive stick when you learn on an automatic. A lot is going to be there, but some key parts are not.
I love stick.. Tho, I have to drive it into my mechanic's garage cuz only the owner knows how to drive it :/
Yup, I noticed that like the initative is roll auto in BG meanwhild you need to do it manually in DnD
Same to know if you can hit or dodge etc...
But I was aware about it
Where should I post a question about dark elves and their alignment
If you feel like it's a newcomer question, here.
If it's more about advice on a character, #character-discussion
Alignment is overrated 😅
True but I’m trying to explain my mom about dark elves cause she wants to play one haha
Thank you!
Rogue thief
Strength 10
Dexterity 15
Constitution 13
Intelligence 14
Wisdom 12
Charisma 8
Is that good? (She’s not good with people)
Seems fine. Going with an Arcane Trickster?
Why so high on Str? You could probably make that an 8 and use your points elsewhere.
Ooh I just distributed the set of numbers the app gave me cause I don’t really understand the point system. And she’s not good with people so I swapped strength and charisma haha
I think that makes most sense because as a drow don’t they get some magical advantage?
It’s fine. STR will still help with carrying capacity and jumping.
A low CHA is fine, too, but you’ll want to steer clear of certain subclasses like Swashbuckler.
Using a calculator is wise, so you can move stuff around. And yes, it will help with carrying capacity, and jumping. However, you might get more use out of more hit points by putting more into CON, or getting straight to a +3 modifier on Dex by putting one more in Dex.
A high INT will work well with an Arcane Trickster or an Inquisitive.
Well maybe I’ll do just a thief instead not arcane trickster. What would you suggest for like just the thief archetype
I assume they’re using Standard Array, not Point Buy.
I don’t want to explain the magic system to my mother
Yes that’s what I’m doing
Thief just needs a high DEX and CON. The rest can be whatever you like.
Ah yeah in that case, 10 strength makes more sense than 10 Chr.
Ok! I’ll swap stuff! Thanks both of you
STR will help a little with Second Story Work, though.
Yeah I would leave it in Str.
I swapped and did 12 strength 10 charisma
15 Dex 14 charisma
Even if my mom barely plays I’ll just keep this sheet for myself LOL
When I do a Trip attack the enemy need to do a save throw of STR
I know I need to do a Maneuver save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength or Dexterity modifier (your choice) too but I'm not sure if i've a proficency bonus
I've a dex mod of +4 and that's it
All classes have a proficiency bonus. It’s in the chart on the class description page listing what abilities you get at each level.
Hi, I'm attempting to create a Gem Dragonborn Character, I have purchased the physical copy of Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, so I can't use DnD Beyond to create the character sheet.
Does anyone know an alternative site for building this character? I'm still sort of new, so I still struggle to build one from scratch using a printed Character Sheet
If you own the book, you can use homebrew to recreate the options.
You don’t roll for the STR save; the target does.
Yes but they need to beat a certain amount no?
If their result is equal or greater than your DC, they succeed.
Oh! Nevermind. I see what you’re asking.
would that be Hombrew on DnDBeyond, if yes, what option am I picking, I've had a quick look a few mins ago and couldn't see which one leads to a Character Sheet
Every character has a proficiency bonus based on their level.
This table shows your bonus for any given level:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#CharacterAdvancement
We have #ddb-support for that kind of thing. I don’t mess with homebrew there. I just know it’s an option.
alright, thanks for the help 🙂
I think the races tab might work
Yeah, you can either add it yourself as a homebrew race (just don’t publish it, please), or you can buy just that race by itself.
Here’s a guide for using the variety of tools available to find a group/game. #third-party-tools-archive message
(Whatever you spend on the race gets credited toward the cost of the book as well.)
I know that but idk what my DC is
8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength or Dexterity modifier (your choice)
What level is your character?
If you have +4 prof and +4 dex, then yeah, 16 is correct.
So the target falls prone on a 15 or less.
Yup
Also when I need to do a saving throw on INT I need to do d20+4 because I've a +0 mod since I've 10 INT
Just making sure, I've prof in int
I don't rmb why but I got to choose 2 Prof bonus stats right?
I'm level 10
The publishers of that adventure have a whole site dedicated to duet play if you’d like to feel more prepared for the experience. https://dndduet.com
Also, you got good advice to adjust enemy encounters if it looks like it’s going poorly. You might lower the numbers (fewer enemies, lower armor class, lower damage, lower bonuses to hit), and you can also play them not intelligently (like if they have non-attack options, you might use them). You can also give the PC an NPC follower (think like a squire) for them to control to help balance things out. Might not be necessary, but it’s another option.
If you have proficiency in Int saving throws, yes, 1d20+4.
Yea, I've tho I don't rmb why I did that I mean I got to choose 2 stats as prof bonus?
I forgot when I made that character
All classes grant proficiency in two different saving throws.
Yea, make sense then
But it would be proficiency specifically in INT saving throws, not INT itself.
Yes so in my case it would be d20+4
(Your bonus for an INT saving throw would equal your INT modifier plus your proficiency bonus.)
Then yeah, a +4 total sounds right.
Besides Winghorn Press’s Wild Sheep Chase and Most Potent Brew, check out The Delian Tomb.
Or 8 +4 +4?
8 + 4 (Dex bonus) + 4 (proficiency).
Aight, was just making sure
Yeah, the +8 for your DEX saving throw applies only to DEX saving throws.
You won’t use that number for any other calculations.
Any time another rule refers to your Dexterity modifier, that’s your +4.
As a rogue I can stab, but I don't see what does stab anywhere?
The word stab isn’t used anywhere in the Rogue class, so I’m not sure where you’re getting that from.
Yea, then idk why someone told me that
Probably trying to give you an idea of what the class does broadly rather than in game terms.
You could use a weapon and describe it as a stab, but it would follow the rules for that weapon regardless.
Which may not be helpful when actually building the character.
Yea, I think they just meant to attack
Have you picked your weapons already?
Familiar with Two-Weapon Fighting, then?
Yep
And I can add a mod
(Though I will say that off-hand is a misnomer; your actual hands don’t matter.)
True, it's just the "idea"
You’d add it to any attacks made using your action, but not to the TWF bonus action.
So 1d6+4 for the first attack, but just 1d6 for the second.
This is really more #dm-discussion, and folks will likely have very different answers, but I think they would be:
- Know the rules. It gives everyone a shared understanding so that you don’t get into “Well my Super Awesome Armor blocks the dragon’s attack.” Unless you and the group want to play that way, in which case, go nuts.
- Know the group you’re playing with—what they like and don’t, what kind of expectations they have for the game. These things can be communicated in a session zero (a term you can find good explainers on via Reddit, YouTube, and blogs).
- Know how to improvise. You don’t need to be amazing at making things up on the fly, but no matter how much you prepare, the players will do things you didn’t expect, so you have to know how to roll with it as best you’re able.
- Know how to communicate and manage conflicts. The DM has a certain added level of responsibility not just in running the game but also being a pseudo-leader for problem-solving within the group. Communication generally opens the opportunity for compromise and resolution.
- Know that it’s a game. It’s supposed to be fun. If it isn’t and it’s causing stress or friction, find ways to make it fun for everyone. Again, communication can help.
That’s only five, but that’s enough blather to digest, I’m sure.
- Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. They can and will happen, no matter how long you’ve been playing. It’s okay to correct things if a mistake is discovered, and it’s okay to just accept it as it happened.
- It’s okay to pause the game if you need to look up a rule or ask in #dnd-rules. It’s also okay to just make up a rule to keep the game going; you can always find the answer later and share it with the group.
- Remember that you’re working with your players to tell a shared story about their characters. It’s your job to challenge them, but make sure they each get their moment to shine, too.
It’s also okay to admit you don’t know a rule in front of the players.
It’s also also good to have players who don’t have the desire to exploit your perceived lack of knowledge.
So, basically for exemple I'm a Swashbuckle Rogue 3, Fighter 7 with a total of 5 superiority die
My combat can be:
- First attack (if it lands): Trip attack
- Second attack (extra attack) if tripped: Sneak attack
- Third attack (action surge): Attack
- Fourth attack (extra attack): Attack
- Fith attack (bonus action): Off-Hand attack
And I guess I can use most of my superiority die to make enemies Trip and Sneak attack, then if I run out of these die I simply can only land normal attacks right?
Until I do a short/long rest
Is that with Action Surge?
Because that has a limited number of uses per short rest.
Sneak attack isn’t limited by rests; you can use it once per turn regardless.
Yes
I mean I just say that for my first rush I can do that action surge
after that I can't
Sneak attack is once per turn yes
I’d assume you can apply both trip and sneak to the same attack as well.
I can
Which might be wise in case you miss the following attacks.
But it's better to make them prone and sneak attack to make sure?
I would try to make sure trip attack lands and they are prone before I sneak attack
So, I'm making a Mountain Dwarf, and I was hoping someone could help me with Class and Subclass?
Sneak attack isn’t any more potent if they’re prone, though.
You get advantage on attacks against a prone target if you’re within five feet, but that’s still not a guaranteed hit.
So waiting to apply sneak attack instead of doing it when you already hit is a needless risk.
I see
All that said, what you’ve laid out here is valid.
And when I used all my superiority die I can do nothing but just attack, right?
For one turn, at least. 😅
yea, it's a sample
You wouldn’t be able to trip attack, yeah.
Rip
You’d still get your once-per-turn sneak attack.
Yea at least
I can also use Second Wind
Once per fight tho
I need to short rest after that
What kind of help were you looking for, exactly?
Basically, despite being a TTRPG person, I have never really done D&D before. At least, not basic D&D.
So I don't know how to get the most out of a starting build
Like in terms of what I want to accomplish, It's Damage, and Magic
We do have #character-discussion and #optimization in case you haven’t seen them.
You are correct, I didn't see them at all till you sent the links
#character-discussion is good for general advice and helping you play the way you want to play.
#optimization is generally interested in the one answer with the best results.
(Even if that one answer is sometimes contrary to the general appeal of that class.)
But if you want to be the very best, like no one ever was…

No problem! Welcome to DnD!
I only have bought a box called "essential" and read the rules
But never played at all
depends fully on your character,
a good idea is to give the DM something to work with, a backstory element that is easy to tie into the actual game
like maybe you had a sister when you were a child, but she disappeared
that would make for an epic reveal later on, if she appears
there is an infinitude of such simple things you can do to create an interesting story (and dont worry about being cliché, that isnt actually something, anyone would look down on)
Thank you !
I will ask if i have problems with all this thing
Thank you
I usually look at my character sheet, and go from there. They had to learn all their proficencies somehow, so especially if anything seems uncommon, that is a good starting point: martial weapon proficiency implies military experience, for example. Backgrounds have a lot of details if you didn't read through them carefully. Languages imply connections, etc.
I had a life domain dwarf cleric...
This character is a dwarf, and speaks dwarvish, so obviously, they come from a dwarven homeland.
They're a brewer and a jeweler, but don't have their tools. Probably they sold them, or had to leave them somewhere due to an emergency.
They have a terrible dex and intelligence score. They wouldn't actually be that good with their jeweler's tools anyway.
They learned giant somewhere. Definitely not in a dwarven mine...
As a joke, I named this character Joe Pants, and when asked their gender, I blurted out female.
Dwarves have fancy clan names for last names... Pants is not one of them.
Their background is Guild artisan (jeweler). Her personality is that she is a perfectionist. Her ideal is community. For her bond, she hopes to prove that she is the greatest artisan. Her flaw is greed, so she always haggles.
Who is this character really though?
Her real name is Josephine. She has found that the dwarven beards, and dangers of the realm make it easier to pretend she is a man. She's up to something shady, and pretends her last name is Pants do that it won't dishonor her clan.
Jewelery inspires her. She wants to be the greatest jeweler, and she is a perfectionist... but she sucks at making jewelery. She got the idea to go out, and get rare materials from the overworld to disguise her poor craftsmanship, and possibly find a material she can work better with.
No mention of her brewer's tool proficiency... she learned that from her parents, but wrnt on to pursue jewelery and religion. They might have drinking problems. Maybe she used to as well.
How do I determine a monster's skill's base value?
You would see if they were proficient, and what stat the skill uses.
If they are proficient, you would add their proficiency bonus plus the stat modifier, and if they aren't proficient then just the stat mod
What stats would Acrobatics, Perception, and Stealth use?
Dex Wisdom Dex
Dex - 16
Wisdom - 13
How do those translate to a base value of my creature's skills?
And they would be proficient in those skills
So, is the creature proficient in those skills? If this is a monster you are making up, you can decide if they are, otherwise it will be written in the character stat block
It is a monster I am homebrewing
THey are
Dex 16 means you add a +3 to every dexterity based skill roll (a 16 is a +3 stat modifier), 13 is a +1
So the next question is, what's their proficiency modifier?
So the +3 for Dex is the base value for that skill?
And then the proficiency is the additional bonus?
Your dexterity is 16. Your dexterity modifier (which is what you actually add to your die rolls) is a +3. Any time you make a skill roll, you add the modifier of the stat it's based on, and if you are proficient you also add your proficiency modifier
So, if you are just like a lowly kobold, just a lil guy, and you have a 16 dex and a +2 Proficiency modifier, if you rolled stealth you would add +5 to your d20 roll
There is a chart, and basically it goes
8-9 = -1
10-11 = +0
12-13 = +1
14-15 = +2
16-17 = +3
18-19 = +4
20 = +5
Glad to help!
You mean Hit Dice?
I suppose
Hit Dice determines how many hit points your character has and the type of die (d6, d8, d10, or d12) to use.
So if I just decided on a fixed amount, do I need the dice anymore?
You need to record what hit dice it has, in case it takes a short rest it can spend them to heal or any other things that might care about them
It would be a boss monster so it couldnt exactly rest
At least in the scenarios im putting it in
Still better to just write it next to the HP, in case anything has something that cares about a monsters HD. Not a big deal though
You take half damage
Round down
In D&D, you always round down unless a rule explicitly says to round up.
I need help but i know practically nothing, i have a character made
Did you read the (free) Basic Rules yet?

HI!
Bear in mind, most DMs will want to set what method they are using for stats, and "allowing players to roll for stats ahead of time without them being there" is definitely one of the least popular ones.

I would very much appreciate an evaluation of exactly how bad an idea this will be for me as a level four Arcane Trickster rogue in a crime family 6shot
15Dex
14Wis
13Cha
12Int
10Con
08Str
Allow me to elaborate a bit more, I already have one super dumb gimmick, and the dm has offered me the choice between two magic items, one will enable me to make my dreams come true and have both the gimmicks I want, the other will make my character more viable overall. I've peppered her with far too many questions already, so I was hoping to figure out whether or not my character can survive without taking the better item to round it out
I didn't mean to be disrespectful sorry
DEX is top choice for any Rogue. An Arcane Trickster might want better INT, and CON should always be top three IMO.
Maybe talk to your group rather than your DM? Like are you going to be the weak link that’s going to ruin the overall group effectiveness by privileging your build idea, or is everyone kind of on a similar wavelength in terms of how strong they’re making their PCs?
I'm not well connected with the group, but I do know that at least one guy is running 4 different classes for his fourth level character
You know what, you have brought my attention to a really important point, nothing I do could be as bad as that, I think I will take the second gimmick
Glad that helped. If you want more opinions, we do have #character-discussion.

I'm going to encourage you to put a higher score in intelligence for an arcane trickster. High wisdom has a lot of uses, but so do your spells. Mage hand can easily be used to safely "find" and disarm all sorts of hidden traps, as well as to pick pockets, plant evidence, and steal

i’ve been dying to try a session since i finally made my character sheet but i can’t find any available campaign never thought finding a game would be the hardest part
Scheduling people and handling expectations and communications is the hardest part of any D&D campaign/group.
There’s a ton of places to try finding a game; check the message above yours.
Have you looked locally
ty
d&d isn’t a thing in where i’m from
There’s no school or game store?
nope also no one here speaks english
May ask which country you come from?
i’m from the middle east
So maybe an online table from a group near europe might be easiest (you should not have more than a couple hours difference with european countries, right?)
yeah it’s only a few hours i just have to find a group first
Might check Roll20 and Demiplane as well for a group.
Also #looking-for-community are D&D servers that may have D&D games going on whenever.
I have a basic idea of how to play D&D I just have no Idea how to set it up on like Roll20 or Beyond or whatever with any like Premade campaign
Is this what you’re looking for?
https://www.dndbeyond.com/campaigns/premade
Idk how to use it
im looking for help how do i start my campian as a DM (i got the esentials kit)
Read the campaign, know roughly what you're going to run.
Focus on areas, NPCs and what they want to accomplish and let the players help determine what happens.
Do you have specific questions?
What part is unclear? What are you trying to do exactly?
What does “use it” mean to you?
Hi everyone! I'm new to DND and have tried to read the rules over and over again, but I just can't seem to get it, I feel like there are so many rules to keep it all organized. Is there a way where I can get a hang of it without having to know everything?
To start with.
You don't need to memorize all the rules. The rule books are there to be referenced.
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
Awesome, thanks! I'll take a look at it.
The most I know how to do with it is get a player in and use the rolls and stuff but idrk what else to do or how
Are you referring to Roll20 or D&D Beyond?
I also have difficulties with the character sheets. Is there a comprehensive video somewhere?
I feel like there are so many factors that influence all the values and how much of whatever you can do...
KJ, you really don't know until the DM tells you the rules at that point you can ask those questions but as for right now I would not worry about the rules.
Okay.
There are many videos walking you through character creation. This one is the most in depth, I feel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcNgj0KPYuA
Cool, thanks a lot!
As long as you know the basic rules. DM should tell you what rules he will be enforcing so you know. Most of the time the DM will have this already down on his sheets so he can remember as well.
I see what you mean.

Yeah, it takes time. Don’t just limit yourself to searching on this server, though!

"You grant a bonus to the target's AC equal to your proficiency bonus against that attack roll, potentially causing it to miss"
it's ability from feat "gift of Metallic dragon" it's mean i add my proficiency bonus to AC, or add proficiency bonus to type of roll? I mean, i am mage, and try to protect fighter from enemy attacking using club it's mean he roll for strenght, i have proficiency in windsdom and inteligency saving throw, my ability is usless in this situation?
When someone attacks with a weapon, the attacker rolls, and is trying to beat the targets AC, which represents their armour and ability to dodge. That ability allows you to provide a bonus to the AC.
Saving throws are a separate method of resisting an attack, usually a spell or a trap. The spells that trigger saving throws will always say so.
Are AC always dodge? I would also think of it as not being able to do enough damage or getting block by a shield
I don't want to confuse people by calling it dodge, because there's other abilities called dodge too! But yes, a lot of classes can increase their AC by increasing dexterity, rather than increasing how armoured they are. So, in the simulation it includes getting out of the way of the blade as well as deflecting it or tanking it.
Also, the heavier the armour, the less dexterity counts. Light armour has less flat bonus but unlimited dexterity bonus. Medium armour has more flat bonus, but limited dexterity bonus. Heavy armour has the highest flat bonus, but no dexterity bonus.
Any advice on creating a Cleric.
Cleric is one of the classes that can be super versatile. You want to be a very powerful support? A hard hitting damage caster? A heavily armoured Frontliner with melee capabilities? All of those builds are possible. So you'll first need to think about your concept, because there's a wealth of options ahead of you.
Thank you for the advice 🙂
Hi all. Me and a couple of friends are interested in playing D&D. I seem to have been the nominated DM but none of us have ever play before! We started with the Lost Mine of Phandelver and we fell to bits at the first Goblin encounter...... Largely because we just dived in. Is there anyone that has a regular game going via Discord that I could observe? Or perhaps someone would be happy to come and DM for my group and then handover? There'd be lots of questions I expect 😬 We'll also be using Avrae if the helps/doesn;t help. TIA 🙂
Also, apologies because I know that you'll a bazillion of these types of message!
https://youtu.be/hgNRe76o4_8 he’s a play through of lost mine
No need to apologize! That’s what the channel’s here for.
There are many videos on YouTube to watch how people run games to get the feel for it
If you’ve got Avrae questions, there’s also #ddb-avrae-help to answer them.
Thanks folks. I really appreciate it. I know that it probably sounds a bit daft but I feel super nervous about DMing even though the lads I'm playing with have been my friends for 20+ years!
I'll pop on and have a look. Thank you very much 🙂
Yeah, it can feel pretty overwhelming, but as long as everyone’s having fun, you’re doing it the right way!
When we tried before there was a lot of laugh but I think that was mainly at the fact we were clueless! I'll watch a couple of the videos that Enoki mentioned and go from there 🙂
Perfect video. Thanks very much!
What character would work with my Cleric and Wizard?
Are you asking for party synergy?
Yes 🙂
Any class really, ranged fighter, Druid, depends what you want to play,
What kind of Cleric?
@smoky adder a war Cleric.
Cool. Then yeah, if you’ve already got a frontline combatant, there’s lots of other classes that could fit.
I’d personally lean toward getting a second character with healing options.
@smoky adder A Paladin?
Yeah, a paladin could work.
@kindred forge there's a few adventures written specifically with the idea of training DMs how to play. I'd recommend checking out Lost Mine of Phandelver or Dragon of Stormwreck Isle. The former is definitely free, and there's an official WotC staff playthrough on YouTube. Even if you don't want to play that campaign, you'll probably have a lot of help "DM-ing along" with the videos - like pausing it when players ask questions, and seeing if your answer matches what the dm says in the video.
Is there any first time suggestions for a new DM starting a campaign with my friends
tysm
My advice in the comment above yours also applies to your question. And if you have any questions, just ask here, or #dm-discussion once you are up to speed
What exactly is homebrew? I never see an ad without homebrew
Nvm googled it 😂 this whole time I thought it meant like made up rules and stuff like that. So all nearly dnd campaigns use homebrew I’m assuming
That depends on your personal definition of homebrew. 😅
Since it’s basically a community term, there is no exact definition.
In my personal opinion, it means user-made game rules, rather than things like a campaign setting.
There are hombrew settings and home brew campaigns / adventures. You could use en existing setting (ie a pre made world existing world, like forgotten realms, eberron, etc) and invent adventures there, or a pre-made setting AND adventure (curse of strahd, where the setting is Barovia and the adventure is also written), or everything made up, or, very rarely, bring a pre made adventure into your home brew world
But you’ll see plenty of people refer to their “homebrew” setting anyway, so like I said, it varies.

My generic DM advice: #dnd-newcomers message
Ultimately, I think it's good to take advantage of the resources available, but don't let "Not knowing how" stop you from doing. That's how learning happens: you try a thing before you know exactly how to do it.
When should I grapple someone to the ground as barbarian? (Grapple + shove prone) I'm playing a beast barbarian
I've not played a barbarian before
Getting people prone (by any means) is a good strategy when:
- It's a target that needs a few hits to take down
- Your allies have a lot of turns in between your shove and the target's turn
It's generally not going to be worth it on a weaker enemy who can be killed by just you attacking them, or if the initiative order means the target is going to get right back up before anyone can capitalise on them being prone.
I like your big words magic man
Being prone means melee attacks withing 5 ft havr advantage, so if your party has folks with melee weapons then shoving an enemy down helps them
If your party has mostly ranged offense then its detrimental, as ranged attacks have disadvantage against prone targets
Bear in mind as a Barbarian you’re foregoing an attack to do the shove, so that damage isnt being done
Hmm!
True
If I can single out an enemy it'll be good
So in situations where the enemy is not physically strong and needs to be taken out of combat while the rest of the party takes out the others?
Like if they have a wizard
Luckily for situations outside of grapple I still work well
Finding ways to be a more sticky tank should also help
I'm incredibly tanky but I need ways to get a character to target me specifically
Slasher could be very good
Hi! I have a question I have 2 ideas for characters but I want to make the character I originally though of.
It’s based off of a character already from a series (non dnd related) but idk what category the character would fall under
From the powers it has it is over powered but Ik that isn’t fair
So characters from other media don’t translate exactly into D&D because the design principles are very different. You can maybe get some variant on the character in D&D, but it’ll almost never be an exact copy.
Right
If you’d like I can give you a run down of said character. And tell me what I can and can’t do
Go for it.
-
dnd is a game with rules and mechanics. Your character needs to follow those rules, according to your DM’s specific guidelines
-
dnd is not an anime or videogsme, some things just wont translate, so manage expectations accordingly
-
dnd is a collaborative game, you have others at the table. If your fantasy is to be the solo hero from other media, you are unlikely to find that fantasy in this game
Many people use a pre-existing character as a starting point for their character, so don't worry too much! Nothing that unusual about it ☺️
So I don’t want to make her completely similar but this is what I have so far.
1. Vectors: she has a set of invisible telekinetic arms called vectors. These vectors can extend to a considerable range and are capable of immense strength and speed. They can cut through objects and people with ease.
2. Superhuman Strength: she possesses incredible physical strength, allowing her to overpower opponents and break through obstacles.
3. Regeneration: she has a remarkable regenerative ability that enables her to heal from injuries rapidly. This power allows her to recover from wounds that would be fatal to a normal human.
4. Telekinesis: In addition to her vectors, she can also manipulate objects with her mind, showcasing telekinetic abilities.
5. Diclonius Powers: As a Diclonius, a fictional mutant species in the series, she possesses psychic and telepathic powers, which she can use to communicate with other Diclonius and influence their minds.
Most of it is overpowered that’s why I know some of it isn’t capable but I wanna know what I can do.
She also can be defeated fairly easy.
She needs to be stuck with force on her pineal gland.
So some spellcasters would have access to those abilities at higher levels, but you wouldn’t get 100% of them, and they would also be limited to a few uses.
For instance, there are spells for regenration, telekinesis, and telepathy, as well as ones with limited influencing of others.
Would be more suitable to take this to #character-discussion
I’m being told to go everywhere @crude musk I’m a newcomer so I had a question on this character I wanted cause I’m not sure
Your question is beyond the scope of this channel

Sorry: a skeleton with resistance to piercing damage, gets hurt with full damage if the arrow is magic or the piercing kind of damage still gets resisted?
The piercing damage is halved.
An arrow+1 does 1d6+1 (plus any Dex mod). The damage from it is halved.
Thanks sir!

New to everything. This server and D&D.
I wanted to start D&D already two years ago, but couldn't.

Would be very very nice. I'd appreciate it so much!

?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
Embrace the shared story.
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
It’s not a competition.
The DM isn’t competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Be fair and flexible.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Modify the adventure to suit your tastes.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Don’t worry about mistakes.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.

Several players on large platforms have said how TTPRG’s can be a form of therapt. This article has a few quotes:
It doesnt hurt to try
Thank you!
Treat it like a game (unless you're playing with professional therapists in which case it could be a form of therapy).
guys how does the find a game work
Yes, I’d be in therapy elsewhere but using the ttrpgs as a way to socialize more, especially on a regular basis which currently I’m not good at.

I would recommend playing with trusted friends and family at first.
i always advise new players: DnD can be therapeutic. that does not mean it's therapy.
So if I post looking for dm I have to have a group already or......
Posting in #750812887697588356 is you just saying"hey I'd like to play, this is my preferences, and here's when I'm available" so a DM could review things and decide you might fit their campaign/group.

Alright thank you

Hi
Yo
Could someone help me with all this creation thing its to overwhelming for me. Plus i dont understand like half of the things it sayes.
There is little chance you have finished reading
Take your time
Where exactly are you stuck?
Is there an official dnd map/world/continent? I don’t wanna make my own anymore lol
Faerun is where a lot of modules for D&D take place.
There’s several!
Oh that’s awesome, I was trying so hard to make a place up and include all the races
But yeah, the default setting for fifth edition is in Faerun, aka The Forgotten Realms.
(That’s where the movie takes place, too.)
Where could I find the faerun map? (That almost auto corrects to fartin)
A google search is enough since it's pretty well known.
Everytime I google search it I just get sword coast
I meant is there any source material in one of the books or something I have dm guide book and player guide book
how to post (as a DM) to seek players? t does not allow me to post
The Sword Coast is part of Faerun.

The whole continent?
Check #find-a-game for instructions.
