Ah ok tyty
if someone casts Fog cloud on a part of the battlefield and someone else cast an AOE spell on the monsters in the Fog cloud, does the attacker gain advantage even if he can't see the enemies ?
since the enemies can't see anything
aoe spells dont use attack rolls so there is no advantage for the attacker to gain
oh that's neat
AoE spells ususally require the target to make a saving throw. Most of the time, this save will not be affected by the affected creature's ability to see
though there are exceptions of course. Look for words like "a target you can see" or "a target who can see you" inside the spell description
okay thanks
Elf has mage power so if the class of elf is a blood hunter not a wizard, can an Elf still uses magic spell?!
What do you mean by mage power?
If you’re asking about the high elf’s Cantrip feature, that can be used regardless of your class. You don’t have to be a wizard.
What is 5e?
The current edition of D&D, which is the fifth.
An Eldritch Knight is still a fighter, most of your work is done with your weapon. STR is still your priority.
CON should be around 16 because you are still a martial expected to take damage, and you need to maintain concentration
INT should be next
This is the tradeoff with this subclass. You get the spells, but you need to increase your scores. Fortunately fighter gets an extra ASI
Additionally, you can pick some spells that dont rely on you INT as much
How often do they commute with new editions? I saw something about a virtual table top is that something that can be played now, or due to be released later?
Fifth edition started nine years ago, and isn’t going away any time soon.
D&D's own VTT is in development, but I don't think they have a set release date for it. They're getting ready for a 2024 rules refresh, and whether that is/isn't a new edition is up for debate. New editions take a number of years, and as said, the old editions continue to be played.
As discussed at the summit, the 2024 core rulebooks are a continuation of fifth edition and not a new edition.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/community-update#2024_core_rulebooks
A character you create today will still be playable alongside a character created with the updated rulebooks.
Sure, but I think even 5e was regarded as not a new edition when released, but the community called it such and now it became accepted—which is to say what is/isn't an edition isn't clear-cut. (But given this is the newcomer channel, no sense getting too in the weeds about it!
)
Point being: if you want to start playing today, you don’t need to worry about everything becoming irrelevant next year.
Just jump in and have fun.
Absolutely. Some folks who are new to the hobby find they prefer older editions rather than the current one. However you decide to play, play; it's a game, so you should have fun doing it!
Thank you! I'll keep that in mind next session 😀
My current DM doesn't 'brew anything yet or at least doesn't want us to until "later on".
Just wondering opinions on whether female dwarves grow beards? I read online that the answer to that question varies depending on the campaign, but I wanted to hear other's opinions.
#dnd-lore probably
But if you already know it depends on the tabled, you already have the answer
Where can i get help on creating my character?
What you struggling with
I'm currently working on a character with a fleshed out backstory. I'm loving all the elements I've placed into it so far however I would like some advice incase I've done anything wrong regarding them
Do you have a link to the character sheet?
Equip your weapons. Did your DM let you have a feat at level 1
I'm currently aiming for them to be a Way of the Four Elements Monk. Picked up the Telekinetic feat so that it could be used later on to propel objectives at enemies such as ice spikes made via Shape the Flowing River.
Its my first ever character and they do not currently possess a DM.
The Feat can be removed since it does not effect any elements to them thus far. It more tied into their backstory
With a few exceptions, you generally don't get a feat at level 1 unless the DM says you can choose one.
Ah. Thank you for informing me
Anything else that i should be wary of? Nothing against their backstory, equipment or etc?
The backstory isn't visible, but the stats/equipment otherwise look fine.
Have i placed it into the wrong section? Its fully written out in Notes
Notes aren't visible to anyone else but you.
well shit
Is it perhaps visible now? I've put in a custom one so I'm curious to know if it shows
It isn't. You could ask over in #ddb-support, but I believe Notes cannot be public.
No those things only show up when you join a campaign I think
Ah. Well then
If you want to share the backstory to get feedback on it, you can cut and paste it, but it might be best to post in #character-discussion.
Ah thank you. I'll go ahead and post it there.
I have one friend who says “you’re a coward if you don’t give a lady-dwarf a beard” and another who says they don’t grow full beards but have a sort of perpetual 3-days’ stubble. So it’s personal preference, mostly. 😄 I would imagine that if the party only has one dwarf, there’s a lot of leeway, but if there’s more than one, the players would want to coordinate about it so their takes on it don’t clash.
Thank you I love this
hi
i just made my first character
can yall rate ithttps://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/101360592
Perhaps don't "spam" multiple channels with the same post?
So first number is how many dice. Second number is how many sides.
1d6 = roll one six-sided die.🎲
2d20= roll two twenty-sided dice.

Some dice you might not have like a 'd3' is a three sided die. They're uncommon now. But if you are ever asked to roll one you can instead roll a d6 (six sided die) and then half the number (round up is easiest for me. So roll a 1-2 = 1, 3-4= 2, 5-6 = 3)
The 1d3 and 1d2 stuff there is because there usually isn't 3 sided or 2 sided dice, so they give ways of getting random numbers using other dice
The d2 is hilarious. Just flip a coin
Yeah 1d2 is a coin toss
But basically that paragraph is just a way of explaining how you can get around not having some dice, by using other dice. It won't come up much.
Can you absorb elements and use a melee attack in the same turn
Yes, but you only get the bonus damage on your next turn
Absorb elements is a reaction triggerd by being attacked with certain damage types. Its benefit applies on your next turn
Neat
So I’m just starting dnd can anyone give me the basics to it

Are Dragonborn characters allowed in all realms
Ok
Being a PHB race, it is most common for them to be allowed, so pre-campaign building a dragonborn character is usually a pretty safe choice if you're looking for one
Your character's ability modifiers, are derrived from their ability scores. The table for what your ability modifier is, based on your ability score, is here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiersTable
Your ability score is usually a number between 6-20, you get this number from whatever ability score generation method your table is using. Either point buy, standard array or rolled (4d6 drop the lowest most often)
You derrive your Ability Modifier from your Ability Score, you dont add them together
For example, if you have an ability score of 16 in Dexterity, your Dexterity Ability Modifier is +3 (as per the table)
This same character, if they made an Ability Check with Dexterity, would then roll 1d20+3 (d20 + their Dexerity mod)
Well we are here
aw that sucks.Though changing spellcasting from int to str is a slight/easy fix, could still try and have a chat with them though
Regardless, Id say focus on your str and cons, int about 12-16 for low level adventures (<8) should suffice (im using point buy/standard array)
Is the DM strictly limited to overseeing the campaign or can he or she have a character in the game as well
Yeah, it's one of those things that's technically possible but generally not recommended
hey can anyone recomend a good campain server for newbies ive played in a couple one shots but im looking for something more long term
you could look in #looking-for-community possibly
When looking for a long-term campaign the trick is to stay vigilant and apply everywhere, there are more players than DMs afterall. #looking-for-players can be a good starting point, but I'd suggest also applying to games on LFG facebook pages, reddit threads and other discord servers set up for that kind of thing
While a DM can have a character in the game, it often doesn't work well and it's generally better to avoid doing that.
The DM gets to control everything in the world except the Player Characters, why horn in on that, too?
The DM already controls every NPC/monster in the game except for the PCs.
A DMPC is general frowned upon for many good reasons.
You can also look and see if there is a local Adventurers league near were you live
New to Dnd can someone help me?

But if you have any specific questions, ask away!
Thank you for help, I'll first go through the basics and if i got a doubt I'll ask you.
Someone with resistance halves the damage of that type against them. If they take 9 damage divided by two, that would be 4.5, but you round down to 4.
A bard with Jack of All Trades adds half their proficiency bonus to ability checks they’re not proficient in. If their proficiency bonus is 3, that’d be 1.5, but you round down to 1.
Can someone help me find a character sheet creator thing? I tried dnd and beyond but found that it ended up weird due to so much being behind a pay wall
Doing it manually confuses me so I’m lost
D&D Beyond includes all the free playable races and classes found in the free Basic Rules. If you want more playable races and classes then you have to buy the digital books or buy the individual races/classes for about $2 each.
@smoky adder how do i find campaigns to play online?
I recommend looking at #looking-for-players
Alright thanks
No problem, Good luck!
Even using the free content you should go through the process to see how it works
So I’m going to my first dnd session this upcoming Saturday. I’m brand new and they said beginner skill level was acceptable. I have the essentials kit and figured that would be a good start. Will I be able to play without the phb? I just don’t want to negatively effect others time.
If your table is for beginners and you’ve read the basic rules, just make sure you’re familiar with your character sheet and go start rollin’ dice
Bring a pad of paper to take notes, both for in-game info and gameplay questions you wanna follow up on
Feel free to ask questions about certain abilities you may have
And this chat is here so that if you need any clarifications on anything you have or need there is usually someone who can help
Best spells for a bard?
That’s more #character-discussion
what do each type of spell mean (Necromancy, transmutation, etc.)
Money
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/spellcasting#AttackRolls Just below here it explains all the different 'Schools' of magic. Mostly it's flavour, such as:
Necromancy spells manipulate the energies of life and death. Such spells can grant an extra reserve of life force, drain the life energy from another creature, create the undead, or even bring the dead back to life.
Creating the undead through the use of necromancy spells such as animate dead is not a good act, and only evil casters use such spells frequently.
**Transmutation spells **change the properties of a creature, object, or environment. They might turn an enemy into a harmless creature, bolster the strength of an ally, make an object move at the caster's command, or enhance a creature's innate healing abilities to rapidly recover from injury.
im new to real dnd but have been making a "homebrew" one and need someone to show me how to really play if its not a bother
Check out the pins in this channel for links to free basic rules and YouTube guides
or well i meant someone to play with
i tried but cant really figure out how to do it
You go to #looking-for-players find a game you like the look of and ask if you can join in the thread under the ad.
ohh ok thank you
Or you post an ad in #750812887697588356 by following the stuff in #find-a-game
oh ok thank you
hi
hi
you're also new here?
yes
Is there any form of dnd magic that will allow me to create stuff?
homebrew if there isnt
for things like that i use like a cloaking spell on a weapon
What do you mean by stuff? There is the bard of creation.
Creation bard, transmute wizard I think, fabricate spell
as in
Imagine I create a huge boulder to crush my enemies or shield me
is there hemokenisis? i use it in my homebrew things but insure if there is real (blood magic
Nope.
damn
Meteor storm, wall of stone
Respectfully, you’d probably benefit from understanding the game first before you try to modify it.
i do a bit, ive played with my uncle so i understand the basics, just not how to set yp proper campain
There are plenty of pre-made campaigns you can run
yeah i have a starter kit, idk what anything means tho
WOTC had published books that have exactly i said: pre—made campaigns that include materials for you to run a series of games and tell a story with your table. Maps, outlines, npcs, stat blocks of monsters, etc. you can buy them
No need to make your own
whats the first necromancy spell i learn that allows me to raise corpses and skeletons and such to fight for me
We’re getting beyond newcomers territory i think, but you should probably read the necromancy subclass
And wizard spell list
You should go to #character-discussion
Hello
Hey, I just joined the server! I hope everyone has a good day/night!😊
You to
Thank you
So to check you know how to find players right (if thays what you want)
Yes, i’m very new to D&D, my bf teached me to the basics and i think i have a solid character and all. Tho i might get confused sometimes, english isn’t my first language😅
Nice lol, it's good you got into it and your English isn't bad dw
Thank you! I’m trying my best
I’m looking forward to play even more! It’s very exciting
Yeah itbis
Is fantasy grounds a good investment
Idk
I’m looking forward to play anytime! I just need to find a nice little ground i can play with, not a big one tho, around 2-3 peole
Mine has alot of people, I'm used to 2 to 3
Wow really? That’s so cool!
It has 8 rn
Woow! Is there a lot of Druid characters there?
A better channel to ask would be #third-party.
No druids so far
Ooh! My character is a Druid!
Hi
Hello!
My character is a Aasimar Druid!
Oh nice
Yeah! I already thought about my Characters look and backstory and my Bf used the information to find out what She is and what her powers and attacks are!
Whichever one sounds cool/fun to you.
There isnt really a beginner friendly race bc theyre all fine and playable
Sure!
I heard a lot of people choose that one, so i’m guessing it’s a very good one
What is your class?
Oooh that’s interesting and exciting
I was only playing twice with my bf! He teached me to the basics few days ago
If you guys want to start a small one we could, if you eant
I would love to!!
Nice
Should i send the Info paper of my character or-?
Yes, thatd help, I do mostly homebrew btw
Hi all. So my teenage daughter loved Honor Among Theives and wants to give the game a try. I picked up the Essential Kit with Dragon of Icespire Peak to run for her (I'm a 25+ year GN of other systems). Just curious of where to set the time of the adventure; before, during or after the movie. Are dates listed anywhere?
According to the Forgotten Realms wiki, DOIP takes place in 1491 DR, and the movie in the late 1490s.
That said, your own game doesn’t have to follow those years, and you could tie it into the movie as much or as little as you like.
I just figured it would give her a reference.
There’s also some movie-related freebies here you can add to your game, if desired:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/claim/bundle/dungeons-and-dragons-honor-among-thieves
Found those. Thanks😁
Question for the DMs. The DnD books, are those guides for campaigns? Do they provide storylines to use with outcomes based on roles/choices of your players?
there are different types for books.
prewritten adventures, core rule books and setting books
Good to know, thanks! I know about the core rule books but wasn’t sure how the prewritten adventures worked.
so if you want to see how a prewritten adventure is structured, I suggest looking at Lost Mine of Phandelver, its free on D&D Beyond
the Dungeon Master's Guide gives some guidance on how to build your own world and game but its not well structured
how do i join a game?

Thanks! I just downloaded that and will check it out.
Whoe wanna play dnd
I assume everyone on this server.
Sure but you should post in #looking-for-players
It's a Simpsons reference.
quick question if im looking for a dnd game can I choose a beginner friendly game or is it kinda like matchmaking and its basically random?
Check out #find-a-game . People will post the types of games they're hosting.
thanks g
Completely random question still relating to being a new discord DnD guy. How does discord voice chat work with these games? Like Skype with no video?
So a short sword is a finesse weapon.
So its up to the user what he wants to Use as modifier dex or strenght?
yes
Everytime he use it or just one time and thats it for good?
every time but normally one score is higher than the other
Ok. Thx 👍
Closer to exactly like Skype 😄. People can turn on videos too, it's just a matter of preference. In my experience, most people just do voice so it's like one group call
Question, what is the best way to get some visual maps when hosting online sessions? table top simulator?
I use Owlbear Rodeo
Awesome, thanks!
As in finding maps? Image search, subreddits like r/inkarnate or r/battlemaps, Dyson Logos, and 2-Minute Tabletop are some of my favorite destinations.
Everyone left my dnd gc lol
oof
Yeah lol
Yoo
Yoo
When yall going to let the newcomers join a sess
Thayd be funny, a session with only newbie
Hey all - I've done a few games as a player in a group - we have done a few adventures. Most players like myself are still kind of learning how things work and how to play a character for a long time in a campaign (mostly done short or one-shot adventures so far) I'm having a go at being the DM for the first time. Just wondering what might be a good starting adventure for a first time DM that needs to get used to telling the story, playing out fights etc
Has anyone started a dnd group to play ? If so do you need players ?
Are you looking for a one-shot or something a bit longer?
For one-shots, there are a fair amount of adventures available for free or Pay What You Want on DMsGuild. I think Wild Sheep Chase used to be one people recommended fairly often
Otherwise, if you want something longer, Lost Mine of Phandelver was the old starter set adventure and is free on D&D Beyond
Check out #find-a-game
Looking for something a lil longer
And okay thank you
I meant like a group in person
Thanks. mostly something a little short so will check out the Wild Sheep Chase.
If a monster ac is say 25 how would i hit it without nat 20
If you have an attack bonus of say, +7, anywhere from 18-20 on the d20 would add to reach 25.
(e.g. at 5th lvl, your PB is 3 and your main attack stat is likely +4, adding to make +7)
Proficiency bonus
Pb in my attacking style so if physicall attack then strengh if mmagical sum like int ?
Different kinds of weapons use either STR or DEX and you use one of WIS/INT/CHA depending on your class for spellcasting (e.g. Druids use WIS, Wizards use INT, Bards use CHA), you then also add your PB for spellcasting or for weapons if you are proficient with that weapon.
Oh ok and if u had advantage on a throw u woul roll it twice and pick tbe better one how about disadbantage
So roll 2 least
exactly 😄
And since i wanna dm for a few friends how van i tie monster challange to player levels in a way its not too hard
How would i balance it basiccly
Holy hell lecture incoming
There are various ways to try, I'm not an expert but I'd usually recommend checking published enemies based on their Challenge Ratings (CR). In general, an enemy of CR 1 is supposed to be a decent challenge for about 4 players all lvl. 1 as part of an adventuring day. CR more or less than that might be more or less deadly (e.g. a wolf is CR 1/4 since it's a very minor threat - you need to use them in groups to pose almost any kind of danger. By contrast, a Cave Bear is CR 2 so it's either going to be more more challenging for that group of lvl. 1 players, it should maybe be the only thing they're expected to fight that day. ) By looking at the kind of stats those creatures have, you can begin to get a sense of what kind of HP and damage output creatures that are 'supposed' to be level-appropriate tend to have.
Pretty much, it's a little hazy and sometimes quite laughable how off it can seem but in general it's the 'expected' difficulty progression by level.
It depends on your party too; a party of optimiser power players may require much higher CR creatures to provide appropriate challenges.
Hi there! This is sounding a lot like a topic best discussed in #dm-discussion rather than here - this channel is primarily to help new-to-D&D folks get familiar with the game and ask specific questions without getting drowned out in other channels.
I dont seem tk be havkng that channel thnx anyway
Click the link - it will take you right to the channel. Also see id:browse to see all possible channels you can access! 😉
You are highly unlikely to find an in-person group by asking on a discord channel with people across the world. Thats why yoi were linked to the channel for online games
However, to find a local table you should check for game stores near by, or a local chapter of the Adventure’s League, and websites like Warhorn, meetup, facebook, craiglist
Oh okay thank you
Hey, new player here and just now found this discord. Are there people here who know the game and is willing to help someone learn through playing?
I was about to ask the same thing!

Thanks, I've looked over the rules and created a character. I'd really like to try and play, so I may try to find a game from the link above.
Yeah - finding a group to join and play D&D with may be the - unfortunately - hardest step. Be patient, spread your net wide, maybe invite others to play with you and start your own group, check out local hobby shops, game stores, even book stores and libraries, etc.
Hey sorry I’m a late but you can try to look in #looking-for-players

I am looking for someone as well to help me learn the game.
Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Does the requirement for a creatures ability "hits you with an attack" to work mean an attack must successfully deal damage or just be used on the creature
That creature could hit with an attack, against a creature that has immunity to the damage of that attack, and the secondary effect the "hits you with an attack" is referring to would still go off
So it always works even if attack roll isnt equal to or over the creatures ac
When you hit a creature with an attack, you are making an attack roll that either exceeds the targets AC, or is a critical hit
You do have to successfully hit
If you make an attack roll that does not meet the targets AC, you are not "Hitting them with an attack"
Ah
You're "missing them with an attack"
You just don't have to successfully do damage unless the ability says so
There are some abilities that just require making an attack as well, which are different
Those would trigger regardless of whether you hit or not
Ah
I have another question but I am unsure if it is fit for here as it continues this or #homebrew as it is about thing I wanted to make
If you're making it, probably homebrew
Ok
If it's something you want to create/invent, then homebrew
Chances are good there is a way to make most things work without homebrew, if you reflavor existing mechanics. What were you thinking?
I could dm you it I have it written down fully
Whats the basic flavor?
I'd prefer to keep the convo here so others can vett my mistakes
Super high ac, but if hit by an attack that deals specific damage type it gets lowered to actually normal levels
Oh, and magic ignores the extra ac
Yeah nah, closest thing that comes to mind is the Eldrich Invocation: Tomb of Levistus
Effects that have super specific vulnerabilities like that are pretty rare in D&D
Ratat and Grog had the right advice
So... reverse it then?
Alright yeah I think reversing it will work, thanks!
where does reversing it come from?
Ok so how I originaly had it
Actually nvm
The problem has already been solved and the only reason as to why I have remained here is because they have asked for "basic flavor"
I'm new and would like to find a game as a player
I'm 99% sure #find-a-game and the entire catagory it's in is the place to look
thanks

Not homebrewing

😭 help i just bought the essentials kit and idk how to run it with my cousins please
How tf can i do this
Have you read the adventure and the basic rules?
All the information on running the game is found there
I did..
I just dont know where to start
like i live in a country that basically has never heard of dnd so its like teaching swimming to people in an landlocked country
Okay, here's a very basic checklist
- Get an understanding of the rules
- Put a group together
- Ask everyone to give the rules a read
- Ask everyone to make characters
- Read the first few chapters of the adventure
- Start the adventure at the beginning
(also people in landlocked countries learn to swim all the time
)
is there any such spell that takes something and like enhances it attack wise, like a quarterstaff or something
Shillelagh does ^
can someone help answer a question? i just joined a group to play, though it was not dnd, it was a tabletop game called tekumel. they gave me an npc to play with my first time. his stats seemed decent, or so i thought, but in the very first battle i was instantly ambushed by 3 mortally poisonous worms and killed before i could attack once. the odds of success based on my body count of 7 required me to get 3 'successes' (3 dice out of 7 rolled a 6) these odds seem unbeatable, and i'm wondering if this is typical of tabletop games or if maybe the dm just didnt like me
What are oppurtunity attacks ?
If there isnt a catch or some hidden factor ur missing then the dm wants u dead
In number 3 what rules should i make them understand
You can't make them understand anything, but generally speaking the basic rules are a good place to start
ok
Sounds like either DM didnt like your or massively misjudged the encounter.
This channel is for newcomers to D&D. If you have questions about non-D&D tabletop roleplaying games, we do have #non-dnd-topics
Can somekne explain oppurtunity attacks ?
When a creature you can see would move out of your reach (usually 5 ft, but can be more), you can use your reaction to make a melee weapon attack against them before they move
Link to Basic Rules in Opportunity Attacks
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/combat#OpportunityAttacks
And would doing an oppurnity attack have bonuses like advantage or a nerf or sum?
It does what it says in the rules linked above
Can someone explain how multi classing works cuz i am clueless
Its a normal melee attack for all intents and purpose, so typical rules apply regarding ADV & DIS.
have you read these? what parts are causing confusion?
How the stats and abilities add up
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/customization-options#Multiclassing - Short Version, any time you level up you can increase your level in your current class, or take a level in a new class. To have levels in multiple classes, you must meet certain ability scores. You will not gain EVERY feature of your new class that you would if you had started in it. And the rules for things like determining how many spell slots you get becomes more complicated. The specifics are spelled out in the rules. But if you're still learning the basics of the game, best to stick with a single-classed character for now.
So each class i would get the the bonuses from its level minus the root bonuses that are from the first level right
There is a table, in that link, that tells you what you get at first level for each class.
I have no idea what you're referring to. Chapter 6 of the Players Handbook/Basic Rules goes over multiclassing. I suggest reading that, and then presenting any specific questions you have here.
you get proficiencies and class features at level 1 of a new class basically. with some exception's.
TBH, if your new and just starting dont worry about learning multiclassing, just play a straight class and wrap your head around it, once you are more comfortable with rest of rules.
Ye but im kinda forced to dm i just wanna know enough to remind the players if they are proficient and what not
Your DMing? then in that case MC is an optional rule and just say your not allowing it whilst you get comfortable with the rules.
Hey, real new and wanted to know how the looking for players/dm chats are setup. If I'm a player do I go post in lfdm or lfp

How do stats grow after leveling up ?
PCs get Ability Score improvements roughly every 4 levels
And Rogues and fighters get more then avg.
But also the Ability Score Improvements (ASI) are tied to class; so, until you get to the level in a class, you don't get the ASI.
The thing to keep in mind is that there is Character Level and Class Level.
- Let's say you start out as a lvl 1 Fighter and then, when you get enough xp to get to lvl 2, you decide to multiclass in Rogue. You are now a lvl 1 Fighter/lvl 1 Rogue, and these are your Class Levels, while your Character Level is 2 - the overall level of the character is lvl 2 because they've acquired enough xp to get to lvl 2.
- This character would have the class features of a lvl 1 Fighter and a lvl 1 Rogue.
So, in the case of the above character, the first ASI is offered to Fighter at lvl 4 and to Rogue also at lvl 4. These are gained from Class Level.
- Because this character has multiclassed, they're delaying their ASIs.
If they didn't take any more levels in Rogue, they'd gain their first ASI when they reached the Fighter Class Level of 4, but the overall Character Level would be 5 because Fighter 4 + Rogue 1 = 5 levels total
Note: these rules are the same whether you're using xp or milestone levelling.
A 5 lvl wizard Cant write a 8 lvl spell into his spell book?
Nope
Copying a Spell into the Book. When you find a wizard spell of 1st level or higher, you can add it to your spellbook if it is of a spell level you can prepare and if you can spare the time to decipher and copy it.
You have to be a high enough level to cast the spell for the spell in order to transcribe it into your book
Ok thx👍
How high a lvl can a multiclass charachter be?
Lets say fighter/cleric/wizard.
The maximum level a character can be is 20, regardless of how many classes they branch into.
So 7/6/7 ex?
Perfectly fine, so long as they meet the prerequisites.
Ok. 👍
Not 20/20/20 😂
Yes, that is not possible.
There's class level and character level, You have a max character level of 20. If you're a wizard and you choose to take one level in rogue, then the max levels you can get in wizard is 19, because 19+1=20
Character level is an economy like everything else in the game. You could go 10 lvls paladin + 5 lvls warlock + 5 lvls sorcerer, for example (10+5+5=20).
How many character levels do you want to spend on each class.
There is a house rule/(unofficial) play variant known as gestalt, in which the max character level is disregarded and one is able to progress through multiple classes up to 20th lvl in each. But again, this isn't in the actual rules of the game and isn't the norm of play, by far.
Dumb question, but do paladins get their powers from their convection to their oaths OR their god?
Oaths.
So I can make a paladin without a god/divine source?
Yeah
An oath of the crown paladin, for example, swears allegiance to a nation/kingdom and derives their divine power in their fealty to the state rather than to a deity.
"Although many paladins are devoted to gods of good, a paladin’s power comes as much from a commitment to justice itself [their oath] as it does from a god." (PHB)
There’s also guidance in Xanathar’s for clerics that serve something other than gods.
That same advice can be used for paladins.
Just below here:

usually when creating a character in dndbeyond, the spells that are already chosen when I for the first time open the sheet itself are there because of racial / class / feat reasons, right? I need to equip spells myself after that?
Because I just created a sorcerer and already have a lot of spells equiped but I never chose them
Also. spells that are pre-determined this way do not count towards the class and level given maximum of spells I can have equiped, right?
Can you share a link to that character?
Knowing the specifics would help provide a more accurate answer here.
I think I answered it myself, I could add spells until dndb told me I have all my known spells filled

The D&D Adventurers League is an ongoing official campaign for Dungeons & Dragons. It uses the fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons rules, and features the Forgotten Realms setting. You can play D&D Adventurers League games literally anywhere. I really like Fantasy Grounds. As a new player, its automation features really help me play the game, without taking too much time to figure out the math. As a player, I don't need anything but the free demo license. I understand there's a bit more of a learning curve for the DM, but the DMs I play with like it.
what would yall say a good age to start playing is?
Depends on maturity
I play with my kids - youngest started when they were 4. You do need to adjust the game a bit for them but it's still fun.
I started playing when I was 8 and loved it.
i want to play but have no one to play with

Do component pouches and arcane foci replace the need for material when casting spells, or do they simply allow for material spells to be cast? For example, if I had a wand and cast fireball (because haha funny spell) would I need to have previously obtained the bat guano and sulfur and use it as well (not consuming cuz the description just says it uses it, not consumes)? Or would I just use the wand and cast it essentially for free without the need of outside material? For an extension: if i had the material (bat guano and sulfur) and no foci or pouch, would I still be able to cast the spell? Sorry for the probably stupid questions, I'm fairly new to dnd and have never played a spellcasting type class before
It effectively replaces the listed material components, unless those components are consumed or have a gold cost.
I see, thanks for the response!
And yes, if you have the actual item listed as the material component, you’re able to use it for the spell as-is. You don’t also need a focus or a component pouch.
Thematically, the component pouch is considered to contain all the material components you need to cast yoru spells, except those which have a gp cost.
how do you know if it consumes the component ?
It will specifically state it in the spell description
If it doesn't say the component is consumed by the casting of the spell, then it isn't
thats what I thought but wasnt sure, thank you
Are there any classes I probably shouldn’t play as my first one? Some of them seem intimidating.
Which ones seem intimidating
The simplest classes are probably rogue, barbarian, and fighter
The paladin seems a bit complicated with these oaths. If I make one small mistake with the rules of my oath what will happen to my character?
that's really up to you and your DM
The oaths really aren't that complex, "oath" is mostly the subclass. The non-mechanical details of the oath, the values and such of the oath are more for flavor and are really up to you and your DM to discuss and hammer out.
Oh I see. Thank you very much!
It's somethign you need to discuss with your DM, some DMs might be really nit-picky about your character adhering to their oath and other DMs are going to be more lenient with that
You should clarifyof time how they view/rule all that stuff
Is it possible for a wizard to walk 10,feet and then cast a spell, like magic missile?
Yes
Movement and actions can be broken up.
If you have 30' move, you can move 10', take an action (including casting a spell), and then move another 20'
Or you can move your entire movement or any fraction of it, take an action, then move another fraction, take abonus action, then complete your movement. Or the other way around.
Thats really Nice.
Gonna make the batlles more Fun and strategic 💪👍
But not All spells or?
movement and actions are seperate in 5e
so casting spells is not affected by how much you move
only if you want to move more than normal, then you would need to take an action to dash, which prevents you from using your action to cast a spell
But a spell with casting time more than 1 hour, its still possible to move?
yes
Good morning coughs and blushes I just want to leave a short hello here ... I guess, I am one of the older frogs, who just arrived yesterday at this server. 51 year old guy, playing D&D since 1985 and the most amusing issue - since 2 1/2 decades with the same bunch of friends ... Somehow I feel quite old-fashioned now after this introduction 😀
👋
That's very cool.
Stupid question here.. Again 😀😀
How come Theres No modifier to heavy armor. 🧐
Seems unlogical for me.
What do you mean modifier
They mean dex mod
Mean, Dex + 2 ex wont give you more to a splint
Because they're heavy...
heavy armor is STR based
They're so heavy (40+ lbs) that you can't take advantage of your nimbleness (aka Dex modifier).
medium armor is DEX based
Its more of a balancing mechanic anyways
So is Light armour
You’ll be picking your armor type based on your build and weapon
Medium armour is the best of both worlds of Light and Heavy armour.
Ok. So If i have + 4 in dex , Ill be better with studded leather, than with a Chain mail.
AC is a mix of the actual armour deflecting the blow and your own movement to avoid getting hit so the heavier the armour the more your relying on the armour to take the hit
Yes.
Because then i still can use stealth
Yir..
But still 😂😂
Imagine a knigth i studded leather 🧐
Studded leather isn't a real thing. Gary Gygax probably misinterpreted the illustrations of brigandine (riveted metal plates with leather/cloth over it).
So yeah, knights wore "studded leather" but in actually it was bridgandine.
Don’t imagine, play one dex based fighters short sword and shield
Ok. Last stupid question for now.
Sorry 🤭
Turned undead, will They keep getting hit, without hitting back?
Lets say They Are cornered..
No, you'll notice the duration is "one minute or until they take any damage"
So as soon as they get hit they are no longer turned
Ahh sorry, missed that line 😔👍👍

Both, among other options. Here’s Ginny Di’s take on the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsnQfXdLgyI
Can someone help me make this character? I'm new to dnd and i want to make this intelligent eccentric character who is a tinkerer and has a synthetic dragon heart giving him access to an almost infinite spring of electrical energy / magic. He has a steam punk robotic left arm and eye which he uses as mediums to power up his attacks. His arm and eye contain many abilities for every day life and combat scenarios (grappling hooks knives screw drivers etc) dm me for info on his back ground https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/101565928 tell me what I could do to make him better
Your charisma should be your highest stat
Okay
How do i configure his arm for it to be something I can use like. How do i set it up as a medium for attacks? Like do I need to create something so I can roll an attack when using the arms built in sword etc
Sorcerer isn’t prof in swords you could maybe reflavour a dagger
Ah okay
You might try using an Armblade for inspiration.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/magic-items/215692-armblade
But a lot of this sounds like a discussion you should have with your DM.
Ah okay
The eye also offer magnifying properties and can use infrared vision although both are very limited as they drain my energy
Again stuff you need to talk to your DM about as humans don’t have dark vision and your home brewing mechanics that a basic sorcerer doesn’t have
Hello
It sounds like you’re starting with alot of ideas about your characters abilities, but this is a game with rules and mechanics for what a player character can do.
Its great to have concepts for your character but its important to study what the game lets you actually do
I’d review the basic rules and them check out the classes to see what is available
From what you described, an Artificer may be closer to what you want
Yup. You’ve got a whole lot of homebrew in there. What homebrew options has your DM provided and, if not, what options have you read in the published rules that lead to this inspiration?
I haven't read the rule 😂 I apologise
You could reflavour some of your spells to come from a mechanical arm like fire bolt, mending, magic missile but putting in new mechanics would be upto the DM to approve
Ah. I see! Well, if that’s the case then my best recommendation is to dive in to the rules - specifically the rules on character creation. Read the classes and races that you feel best fit the theme you’re going for. The closer your character is aligned to how the D&D rules allow for character creation then the greater chance you’ll have of actually playing said character.
I cant see that in the dnd beyond character class section
You would need to buy the class
I see, the original idea was someone with a robotic ish arm which could shock people I touched but since I didn't see a class that could fit I w went for sorcerer and tried to fit what it told me
Hey quick question, so is it a good idea to be apart of multiple campaigns? I got invited to two different ones and I feel bad about only joining one
If you have the time and energy to play multiple campaigns go for it
There's nothing inherently wrong with it, so long as you can keep up with both at the same time. But each one is a time and effort commitment, and one that affects other people and their schedules. So it's really up to your own sense of what you can handle.
One last question, what does 5e mean? I see a lot of it around this server
It means 5th Edition, which is the latest version of D&D currently.
Ah okay
Again, I strongly suggest checking out thr Artificer as it seems to be exactly what you’re describing, down to a subclass with something called Thunderbolt Gauntlets
I see, it would be in the dnd beyond marketplace right?
And theres a cantrip called Shocking Grasp which seems exactly on poont
Yes, or just buy Tasha’s Cauldron
Ah nuts. I just joined another server yesterday, and was putting in a lot of effort to get my chara sorted out. Now that I'm even suggesting to myself to dip my toes in and I'm forgetting that this is not that server
sigh the woes of a traveler
nice to meetcha
As a short description, an artificer is a tinkerer - they use magic through inventions, trinkets, mechanical stuff
my name is lily
That's perfect
Thanks a lot man!
mrrr~ good vibes
Use the website version you can buy subclasses for 1.99 if you didn’t want the whole book
Howdy folks, I had my first irl session a few weeks ago and loved it!
Due to having a busy life I can't always commit to the same day and time every week. I'd love to join some one shots / begginer campaigns to learn the game more and from the ease and comfort of my own home 😂.. UK based, so timezones can sync up.
Also nice to meet you all
Hey, this is for DDB, whenever looking at spells inside the marketplace, I don't know what level are the the spells, like if it's a level 3 spell or level 2 etc, is there anyway of seeing the spells level when purchasing them of the marketplace?
Not in the marketplace, no, but you can look them up here.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells
Ok!
ah, keep my posted. I've never played before and I'd love to gain experience.
I was introduced to a cute easy to use platform for character creation. sadly, it's not compatible with the avery bot, and the people that I've spoken to don't recognize the race. Catkin, as opposed to tabaxi
Will do... My first session was glorious!
heee~ That's promising to hear. thanks
We suffer the same fate , uk time zone
@lyric fjord I'm sure you'll find something that works
I feel like uk timezone is the worst for the rest of the world 😂.. But atleast there's two of us
it’s something we suffer
My UK player just stays up until like 2am. Don't know how they do it
As an art student I’ll confirm sleep deprivation
Please keep me updated, I would love to play! I'm currently on vacation but when I return I would love to play. UK based, I'm brand new never played before
Is there any session going on today me n my friend would like to join

Absolutely 🤙🏻
Hello
I'm a brand new player and I have just a couple of questions. Is it better to create a character, then try to find a game for it, or try to find a game session and then create a character for it? Based in the UK btw, since some people were just talking about it, if any groups are friendly to complete beginners hit me up
If you make one character, and then go looking for a game, you might find that the game has a very different vibe than your character, or is starting at a different level, or has some limitations from the DM that you didn't account for.
But...finding a game can be hard, and making characters is fun! So probably best fun to make a few characters, while looking for a group. Then hopefully one will fit, and you'll get a better sense for all the classes' abilities.
Some like to theorycraft characters and build backgrounds for them and then set it for an upcoming campaign. Some build something specific for a campaign.
Adding to the above, you might generate multiple character concepts and go in with the expectation that they'll need to be tweaked to fit the specific game. That way, you won't be disapppointed if you can't play something as is.
I spent too long making my first one I guess I should just practice by making a bunch and reading about the things I choose as I go. Great advie, thank you
I suggest having characters ideas that are easy to adjust, easy to change and tweek but still remain the character overall
Hey! Im new to D&D and I was wondering what do you guys do outside of sessions to scratch your D&D itch?
As a DM I read and prep and listen to podcasts/watch YouTube VOD D&D streams.
Awesome! what kind of things do you suggest that a player can do outside of sessions?
Read up on the rules (at least how your character class and features works), listen/watch podcasts/streams, check-in with your DM and see if they need help with anything, think about becoming a DM... lol
But really lean into being a great player with your DM and group.
Clearly I hang out discord and argue about rules
perfect thanks!
My current plan outside of sessions is to develop my current character and come up with new character ideas, read the rules and learn them in more depth, watch podcasts and streams and learn how to DM
Besides the recommendations above, I write vignettes in my characters’ lives or journal entries to get a better handle on their voice and perspective. Play-by-post games are also a nice way to be part of a group without the need to commit to a swath of time each week.
I’m going to be going to my first ever dnd session on Saturday and it’s in person. It’s a one shot a my lgs how and who would I go about asking if there’s any like continuous campaigns or such I can attend? I’d like to get into actual dnd content if available. The stores is a 1 shot home brewed with lore inspired by the store
The people at the store…?
Well yes but isn’t there a form of etiquette? I feel like just going up and being like hey I’d like to join your campaign if you have one sounds rude
Uh, just be genuine and polite and ask? Tell them you’re new
I dunno why anyone would get mad
I feel like you can ask something like that without being rude. "Hey, I'm interested in long-term D&D games. Do you know if any have openings?"
Can't hurt to ask if they do have openings. Just be polite and don't demand a spot in the group
Its a a game store. Literally everyone there is already gonna be a nerd interested in playing games. Be polite, be honest, be friendly.
I know it was a weird question lol. I just live in a very rural town and in 30 years we’ve never had a game store and I have real bad social anxiety so coming into a whole new hobby is intimidating for me.
It may reassure you that a game store is where there are already people with shared interest
They generally WANT to talk games and play games
And they'll probably be excited to share their hobby with you. Showing new folks what's awesome about the thing you like gets lots of folks jazzed.
There’s also shameless bribery
Bring some cookies, everyone will love you. Thats what I did
the game store equivalent of buying everyone a round at a bar, everyone is your friend suddenly
I am trying to create a backstory for my first character build ever and I would like reference geographic parts such as certain forests and towns. However, I am not familiar with the D&D world map where could I look to find that kind of information
do you know what world you are playing in? Faerun, dragonlance, etc?
The Forgotten Realms is the most used for setting for 5e's official adventures. The Sword Coast is a popular general area. I'd start with the FR wiki: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Sword_Coast
But that might not be where the game you join is located. Make sure to ask your GM if that's the case
Our 1st campaign is the lost mines of phandelver since it a good game to ease in to so I’ve been told
You could tie your character to the area that starter campaign takes place in. Character could be from Neverwinter, the now destroyed village of Thundertree, or even Phandelver itself.
Passive check is only perception?
Ok.
Only perception (wis), is on the charachter sheet on php.
Yep, because it's the more commonly used
On D&D Beyond, because there's more space, it lists passive investigation and insight in addition to perception
How do i join a campain
You go to our game finding channels (head to #find-a-game for more information) and reply to a post that sounds of interest. If you're accepted, you'll be able to join that campaign
Alternatively, start your own campaign and recruit people
And its 10 + ability modifiers + lvl?
Just modifier, you don't add your level
Yes to proficiency bonus if you're proficient
Ok thx. Got it 👍👍
You add your Proficiency Bonus if you're proficient in the Perception skill
You just add whatever you'd add to a Perception roll.
+5 if you have advantage, -5 for disadvantage.

The above box has links to the basic rules, copied here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
You want a link for a campaign right?
Yeah
Dnd isn’t like an MMO where you can drop straight into a campaign there is a bit of planning and set up needed, ya may take a while to find a DM but good luck and welcome
aye. I've never played with a group before, but even I can imagine how much preparation is worth
How do i dm
Can you tell a story and do you understand the basic rules?
Ok
I make a story where players get jumped by goblin babies so they have have to make the decision of wether to kill a bunch of babies or die
Well that is a dark moral choice
If your table is ok with that sort of thing, you need to check with players before starting a story what is acceptable at the table and that’s a bit dark
That’s the kind of thing you may want to discuss with your players before springing it on them.
Ok so i will ask them if they want to kill a bunch of babies
Let’s drop that particular topic. It’s not appropriate for this server.

Where does the gold go, from writing a spell to your spell book.?
Its the cost of inks and paper to copy it over, its not a straight swap for gp's
For each level of the spell, the process takes 2 hours and costs 50 gp. The cost represents material components you expend as you experiment with the spell to master it, as well as the fine inks you need to record it.
Oh.. So he needs those components everytime..
Most DM's will handwave it and just ask you to spend the gold pieces, some will require you to go to a store and buy the components.
Thx dude.🙏

Hi!! I’m new ish to dnd, I’ve only played a little but it’s my fav thing in the world bro
what is the difference between d&d and d&d beyond
D&D is a game. D&D Beyond is a digital toolset to help play the game.
D&D Beyond is not required for playing D&D (but I'd personally hate playing without it.
)
makes things easier
Good day and salutations I’m a bit new, but I was curious on how viable a alchemy based character would be?
There's a whole artificer subclass that can do it, called the alchemist
always check what’s available first
You don’t need to! Focus on the bits that you’ll need. Pick a class, a race, and the rules on combat. That’s about 15 pages.
Then just figure out how to reference the book when rules questions come up and you’re good to go.
play a audio book or listening to some music while reading always helps
Read in chunks
Focus on what you need to know, pick a class and race for instance and read up on that, if your not playing a spellcaster then ignore/put off until later the spellcasting section entirely.
Just take it a chapter at a time. Don't worry about reading the descriptions for every race and class right away, just pick a couple so you get an idea about how they work. Don't even both reading about multiclassing yet, save that for when you're more comfortable with gameplay and leveling up a character. You don't need to memorize everything, but the more familiar with the rules you can be, the easier it will be when you actually sit down and play. And don't get too worked up with the math side of things. The most important rolls will be a d20 plus or minus a number. Part of filling out a character sheet is doing that math upfront so the +X or -X is written right there so you don't have to figure it out each time. After you've read through the chapters on character creation a bit, hop onto D&D Beyond and try making a character for practice(I would suggest using the "Standard Array" option for generating your ability scores, just to keep things simple). And if you have any specific questions about something in the Players Handbook or on the character sheet, feel free to pop in here and ask.
..would that be under multiclassing?
Nope! Just look at artificer level 3, you get to choose one of the subclasses there and one option is alchemist
So I wanna learn to multiclass and im planning to go dip into it right off of level 2 so im a level 1 paladin planning to gain a level in warlock , so when I am doing hp I roll the 1d8 from warlock and add it to my hp max instead of the 1d10from paladin right?
I appreciate ye feedback back I’ll keep looking in the PH but I am lost lmao
Great question for #character-discussion (multicalssing is a bit more advanced than newcomer kind of questions)
Oh ok , sorry
So artificer isn't in the players handbook, my bad. It was the only new additional class made in 5e so far
It's in Tashas
Ooh my b as well I’ll have to get that at some point really want to try making a crazy alchemist, which might help or harm with his concoctions
Do you guys think that a Wood Elf ranger is a good choice for my first character? I don’t want anything too complex for my first time
Sure
Awesome! Thanks!. Im not sure really, it was always a type of class that I was attracted too when coming up with a character. Maybe it’s the bow and arrow im not sure haha
bow fun
Hitting trickshots with a bow is always fun
so how do i play dnd
i wanna get into it cause of how fun it sounds and i've heard its like telling a story

How much should the starting GP be for a character?
Your background lets you know how much gold you have
Or if you don’t want the starting equipment from your class you can roll for gold and buy what you need. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment
im creating a homebrew creature right now, when in the action description it says Hit:(#d# +#) does that mean like the score it gets on rolling DC or the damage?
Damage
oh okay, thanks
So, since my character has the Sage background they will start with 10 GP?
Yes
Ok, thank you!
I'm trying to use Discord to find an online group to play with. I can see posts in the different "looking-for- " groups. But I can't reply to any. How do I reply to a post when it says "you do not have permission"? Also, How can I create my own post?
There should be a thread under each ad to respond, to make your own follow the guide in #find-a-game
Thanks! Got it! ... new to Discord as well as DnD.
Hey! I'm trying to make a post in the looking for dm, I have the form open, but when I press edit responses 1-5 I cannot see where to input the information. I can see the actual embed but I don't see how to modify it all saying "not set". Sorry if this is the wrong channel I couldn't see a discord help one. Thanks for any help
You can just type your responses in the normal message bar.
They’ll get picked up by the bot instead of posting to the channel.
I have a two questions as a new dm and i've only ever played martial characters. First, we decided as a group to start at level 3. Some of the HP levels seem off. I have a PC Druid with 24 hp, PC Ranger at 12 hp, PC Rogue at 12 hp and a PC Warlock at 15 hp. Do those seem appropriate for level 3 characters?
Second, I'm still figuring out magic. In last nights session the warlock cast Shatter. Its area is a 10ft sphere, and all 4 bandits were within it. two made the saving throw which halved damage. My question is, do you not have to roll to hit with spells such as this?
Are you rolling for HP, or using averages?
To calculate max hit points, you'd also need to know their hit die size (1d10 for your ranger, 1d8 for the rest) and their constitution modifiers.
Everyone starts at level 1 with the max possible for their hit die (10 for your ranger, 8 for the rest) plus their constitution modifier.
Then each time they level up, they can roll their hit die and add it, or they can take the average, rounded up (which is 6 for your ranger and 5 for the rest). Then they add their constitution modifier again.
They built characters in DND Beyond, i assumed it did all that for them
Did you want them to roll or use averages?
You can check in their character settings to make sure they're all using the one you want. Look for a box called Hit Point Type.
doesn't matter to me really. I'll check on their sheets, thanks.
"Fixed" will use the average and automatically calculate their HP.
I'll bet your Druid is set to Fixed and has +2 CON.
If I had to guess, the Ranger and Rogue probably set it to "Rolled" and then didn't enter the amount they rolled for levels 2 and 3.
They can update that on the Class tab by clicking "Manage HP".
Generally, a spell with either ask for an attack (where the caster rolls) or a saving throw (where the target rolls).
You are correct that spells which require saving throws rarely require an attack roll
Ice Knife is an exception, for one example. It requires both.
Magic Missile is also an exception. It requires neither.
Thanks. Appreciate it. threw me for a loop when we went through combat.
Spells which state "creatures take half damage on a successful save", such as with Shatter, are almost always guaranteed to deal some amount of damage
got it. thank you for the help!
A target of shatter might not take damage if they're immune to thunder damage, for example.
Hey everyone I have a question about the thing I filled out about player finding dm when will I know if someone answers it?
You'll get either a reply in the thread attached to your post, or a direct message.
You should be able to change your notification settings for that thread if you want an alert every time someone posts.
I’m not sure where to check where my post is sorry I’m new to this
If you're a player searching for a group/DM, you should post in #750812887697588356.
If you're a DM looking to recruit players to your game, you should post in #looking-for-players.
I just submitted it!
Good luck! You should peruse the posted games in the #looking-for-players channel as well and contact anyone whose game sounds interesting to you.
It won't let me type in looking for DM
Have you read the instructions in #find-a-game?
KInda skimmed may have missed something
Figured it out lol feel kinda dumb now
We are all dumb sometimes but that’s what makes us human.
Is there something you need help with? Or just making statements lol
I just read the black pudding statblock and thought of something, if a creature has an ability that's required to "hit" (as in succeed in an attack roll) then is there no way a failed attack roll would even make the slightest of contact to corrode it?
Just thought it was strange. I mean, it does have very low ac, but are there any other creatures with "on hit" abilitites with higher ac? If so, I think it would be pretty weird if any attack you made that fails the attack roll doesn't make contact with them at all
I don't see the issue. I missed melee attack with a weapon isn't affected by the corrosion.
Game mechanics-wise, if you miss its AC then you completely miss the attack. There's no near-miss in D&D. How you describe the hit/miss is flavour.
Alright
Just a thought I had, really, nothing more
That's fine. I was just explaining the game mechanics to you.
hi im new to dnd
Mrrr~ Hi. I am also new.

My hope is to gain some fist time experience with a party, but I'm also working on setting up some quests for a custom world of mine. I'd love to DM for it, or even join a session using it as a base. long term hopes
I've never played or DMed a session before
sounds fun
mrrr~ I hope so.
First planned session, I've got some mean tricks set up. One mechanic can turn players against their party mates, incapacitate them and eventually drain them of an essential resource. on top of that, they get to fight natives until they discover a sustainable approach to the quest.
mrrr~ spoiler alerts.
oooooo good idea
nice to meetcha nana
You too lily:)
I'm not seeing the common option on the background language, is it automatically the base default? Or is it just not available in custom backgrounds?
language background, and yes
Can you share a link to your character?
It's not yet done, because I'm not sure if I won't be able to change it after finishing
Yeah, you can.
Oh-
one sec hshdjhg
...okay yeah nvm it's automatically there according to the sheet.
You probably learned it from your race already.
So it stopped you from picking the same thing again.

Thank you so much
you beautiful peeps im really interested in being part of a game if anyone is starting any
Welcome! There’s instructions in #find-a-game to get you started.
man reading those instructions is like reading paper instructions for building a crib hows about someone just be like yo ill send ya a message.
Ok but you still need to follow the instructions in #find-a-game just make sure your table is ok with your antics

Hello
hello
Hello. New peep here. I am looking for help with creating a legal AL char and am also looking for a group to game online (I can potentially bring two others also interested). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I'm guessing your looking for AL games since you mentioned it lol. We do have #1050206572535623690
We have AL channels that may be more helpful for Al questions - see #adventurers-league
Check out the docs attached here:
Well, I'm not necessarily looking for an AL game, per se. I have gotten into an epic event at my local GenCon and need to come with a legal AL char. It's been decades and much has changed so I'm needing some help with that. Separately, I'm looking to get into an online game. It doesn't have to be with the same char.
Thanks for the info, all!

Does any GM out there want to play Lost Mine Of Phandelver with me I'm new to D&D and heard it was a great module for beginners its just me so far but if you know any beginner or someone who wants to play it again let me know I'm ok doing it i make my charters on D&D beyond if that makes it easier It will be my first campaign so if you want a fun time helping the unexperienced and your a good dm this could be a good opportunity for me and you.😊
ive already done that and have to wate 5 days so now thiss is next best
Well, you're not suppose to post here looking for a DM.
Keep looking there and in #looking-for-players
fine
The next best option (I’d argue the best option) would be to browse through #looking-for-players to see what games are already available instead.
Hello! I'm completely new to D&D and would love to play in my first campaign, but I'm not sure a lot of games would take a newbie. How do I know the experience level DMs are looking for?

If range spells makes a 20 in a roll, is it then more damage. Than normal 🤔
That would be a critical hit, you roll double the amount of damage dice a normal attack would.
Before modifiers, of course. If you roll an 18 and then add 2, you don't crit.
Ok, so not only weapons but spells to. 👍
Yeah, any attack roll can crit, and you hit the enemy even if 20+mod is lower than their AC.
Skill checks can't crit though. That's a common misconception
Ok. Thx dude 🙏
I think a fighter with good strenght, has really easy chance to hit target.
Hi guys, I have never played DND before but I am super interested in learning how to! I've been interested in DND for a bit and just want to try and play properly.

Jinx!
lol
So welcome to D&D. Stranger Things brought you here, eh?
There was a big wave when it first came out, yes
At around the same time as Critical Role
Well in that case: It's not "the" Demorgogon, it's Demogorgon. Even he is not vain enough to ask for a "the" in front of his name. If I catch one more person calling him "the" demogorgon, I will be sacrificing them to him myself
(Joke, obviously)
You mean the Dragons of the Stormwreck Isle starter set adventure, yes.
I will say, if you aren't planning on becoming a DM it's not really worth it to purchase
Thats one of the adventures specifically designed to get you in as a plauer
Though it depends. Do you plan on becoming a DM and initiating your friends?
Then it's fine
If your a DM, buy the essentials kit
You don't even need to buy a starter set
With d&d beyond, you can use the free basic rules along with the now free adventure Lost Mines of Phandelver, and you have the first starter set without spending any money
Well you get the choice. The current starter set is Dragons of the Stormwreck Isle but the previous one, Lost Mine of Phandelver was very well received.
It also features a detailed step by step process for making a character
Basically holds your hand the entire way. I’ve never used it but it seems decent
The essentials kit rulebook (and the starter set rule books) are just stripped down versions of the free basic rules.
It gets you the main ideas of the Players Handbook while not spending $50
You don't have to use dndbeyond if you don't want to, another option is to download a fillable character sheet pdf
Yeah! My suggestion is always to use the free resources to make sure that this is a hobby you enjoy before dumping money into it
Or use the free basic rules for $0
So honestly, read it, try it, and then if you like it, go buy the Players Handbook
Which has more than both the starter set and essentials kit rule books combined
Thats what I’m saying. Go do it for free then spend money if they want to

5e's one of the easiest system to get into tbh
It can be overwhelming and it likely will be it at first, but stick with it.
Imma let you in on a secret. Nobody knows everything. Don't try to. Learn how to look things up in the books.
D&D 5e (Dungeons and Dragons Fifth Edition) (aka "the popular one")
5e is the version of the game thats been published. 5 versions of Dungeons and Dragons (well they say this is the fifth) so 5e
Really this would be by my count the 8th edition
Maybe I’m wrong about that. Someone correct me if I am
Technically correct yes
Though we will soon transition to what might be the 5.5 edition
One D&D yeah a glorified 5.5
Yeah, this is definitely not the appropriate place to discuss that
Yep, your right, sorry
In the looking for dm channel, what does Opt In Community Servers, Paid Games and Other Services mean?
What's LFP? And what's LFG?
Looking for players, and looking for group/GM
Are you open to being invited to other servers/west marches? Are you open to being contacted about paid games? Are you open to being contacted about other services, like artwork?
So basically if they want to be asked to play games that cost money, other servers and other people???
Yup. So if your offering a paid game, you probably won't want to reach out to the person who doesn't want to participate in a paid game
And if you do and we mods hear about it there may be consequences.
Hey sorry to interrupt but how does the lawful good alignment work? Not sure if this is the right channel but I’m new so
Alignment is a way to help give you some role-play prompts for what your character might do.
So for lawful good - the lawful part indicates you follow some code of conduct/expectations/rules/laws that come from outside of yourself. Good means you act for the greater good of all, helping others even if at the expense of yourself.
In past editions of D&D, alignment was more mechanically relevant but in 5th edition it's more of a "possible way to play your character" - but don't feel like you have to play it that way.
Is it breaking the rules of arcane focus if the orb is actually a glass eye?
Not at all, they can be pretty much anything you want, as long as you hold it in one hand to perform Material and/or Somatic components
What if I just did the hand jesters in front of the eye in my head?
??
Sorry I'm kinda tired
Like this 🧏♂️
I don't think I understood your sentence
So I do the hand movements required to cast the spell in front of my eye while it's still in my head
🧏♂️
You must have an empty hand to do so, yeah
"A spellcaster must have a hand free to access a spell's material components -- or to hold a spellcasting focus -- but it can be the same hand that he or she uses to perform somatic components."
Ok that usually isn't a problem with wizards. Most we ever have in our hand is 2 knifes
Hello, newcomer here
Any tips for creating a tabaxi warlock character please?
You can use tasha's custom origins to make your +2 Charisma, if your DM allows that
What are you specifically looking for? Tips for warlocks in general?
By the way, is it the mmotm one or the volo's one?
Hi,anyone in Aus or close to Aus time zone? been keen to get into D&D and looking for tips on which books(real or online) to purchase in the early stages. thanks
The Basic Rules are available for free. https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules
Play with those and see if you like the game before you drop money on it. If you do, the most important book whether you’re a player or DM would be the Player’s Handbook; it has the core of the game’s rules.
So No ranged speel attack has saving throws?
Some do. Ice knife as one example that first comes to mind
Fireball
Not sure if my character is correctly done, is it okay if somebody checks it for any mistakes?
No need to ask just share the link people will help you out
How did you do your stats?
I rolled
Use point buy or standard array
Got it, anything else?
Pick your spells and you get a feat cause you picked variant human
While yes, rolling, point buy and standard array are all valid ways of generating stats, you must validate with your dm what method is being used. Be prepared to reroll stats once you actually get a dm
Depends on your DM and if they allow firearms in their world
I see. Alright
I may have forgotten a rule. But is a personal possession illegal to have when it's about somebody from irl media? It's not LotR by the way, or any other media similar to that
But not.. irl irl. Like a mascot of an irl person
Your DM decides that, but assume if it’s not something granted by your starting equipment then it’s likely not something you’ll be starting with.
That book wouldn’t make much sense in a world where hogfolk don’t exist 😅
Wait there's no hogfolk? Google lied to me then xD
Avoid the wikis. They’re chock full of homebrew. Stick with the published rules until you’ve got a DM.
There may be homebrew, but nothing official to my recollection.
My advice, stick with the official material while wrapping your head around the game
can Aarakocras hover ?
Yes. They can stay in place in the air unless some ability forces their movement speed to zero.
They don't have the hover -ability though, if that's what you mean
i just wanted to know if they can stay in place while flying
Then yee, like Sad said they can 👍
Difficulty class
When you roll a skill check/saving throw, the result must be higher or equal to the DC for it to succeed
ohh
So how does RP spell casting work? Do you still only have your prepared slots or can you use any known spell?
Usually you choose which spells you have prepared after a long rest, so those are the only ones you have access to until you take another long rest. That includes during RP parts of the game. (Warlock is a bit different)
Okay I was wondering if there was a work around by like prepping the long ones and saving the instant ones for whenever
Nothing about being outside combat changes the rules for spellcasting.
Thats why it's important to have a mix of combat and non combat spells prepared, it's all a balancing act to try and figure out what you are likely to do.
Unless you're a paladin. Then the struggle is real for spell slots lol
Very true
Or be a wizard and have a book full of rituals
So if it is a ritual it doesn't need to be prepared?
anyone wanna do a DnD beyond?
I use it every day. Why do you ask?
That only applies for wizards.
The caster must also have the spell prepared or on his or her list of spells known, unless the character's ritual feature specifies otherwise, as the wizard's does
So glad I picked a half caster then lmao 🤣
If I wanna do dnd beyond is this the right server to find people?
People outside this server use DDB, but lots of folks here use it as well.
Alright thank you
Dndbeyond is just a tool for making character we don’t play games on it fyi

Hey all, joined this discord group the other day and want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I figured out how to make the "looking for dm" post, but am I supposed to copy/paste it anywhere or does it stay within that category and people visit those pages to find a match?
Thanks in advance, my friend and I just began our DnD journey and are looking forward to learning more and joining our first campaign👍
It'll be in that channel—don't go copy-pasting it elsewhere.
In theory, DMs will look through the postings and contact players who pique their interest, but you may have more luck scrolling through #looking-for-players and reaching out to folks whose games sound like ones you'd want to play in.
That's pretty good advice, much appreciated
Guys.. how does speed works? Cause i think i have been running it bad this whole time... speed resets every round for every player??? Or is it something you have to track and doesn't reset til combat ends (i mean speed just acts like how much you can move in a turn??)
Like movement? You can break up your movement throughout your turn - so you could move 15 feet, attack, then move another 15 feet.
You can move as many feet up to your speed (typically 30) in any given turn. It resets at the start of each turn.
Bruhhhh i have been tracking movement speed this whole time!! As it doesnt reset in every turn
In a turn you can move up to the amount of movement you have - e.g. 30 feet. If you take the dash action you can move that amount again, thus doubling your movement.
... damn i guess the way i learned by another dm a long time ago was wrong :/
Nope, the only thing you should be mindful of with movement in combat is getting into opportunity attacks, by leaving the attack range of an enemy.
Thank you so much!! Im going to let know my players rn
Of course. Glad I could help.
how can i go about joining a dnd game? sorry if this is not the right place to ask

should i have my character made or do you make them after you join a group
I would at least get some practice in by making a test character or two and get familiar with how characters work mechanically (you don't have to know everything). But then I'd make a character specifically for the group/game you're playing with that aligns with the kind of D&D game you'll be playing.
What is it called when, instead of 3d model token, you take a sheet of paper. Draw your character, fold it in two and place it on a token. What's that sort of token called and how do I find picture of it?
paper miniatures, I think
Helo, someone speak spanish?
This is an English only server
Here, but this is English only server.
Do you happen to know of a server in Spanish?
No sorry
So I asked this question on character-discussion and got a few tips but I figured it was not the best place to ask.
What's are some good ways to roleplay and stay in character/get in character. I'm finding it difficult to do so.
Are there any good ones on YouTube? Or any free ones online?
Saying to take acting lessons is actually the opposite of helpful, not taking into account the barrier of actually getting said lessons
There are many different ways to roleplay. For me, the easiest way to start is just describe what the character is doing and speaking about themnin the third person. The more you do it, the more comfortable and easier it becomes
I think Ginny D recently released a video about getting into character IIRC
You created your character with a backstory, bonds, ideals, and flaws? Work with that. Remember that you don't need to do special voices/accents, however, you can change your voice with the speed and tone. Talk in the third person first if you're uncomfortable with acting as your character.
The only issue I have with third person is I would be the only person in third person for my group, though it's probably what I should do to get used to role-playing
Who cares if you're the only person talking in third person. Do what makes you comfortable.
Get in your comfort zone first.
It's all about your comfort level an experience
The more you do it, the easier it gets
You can't get better unless you do it.
I mean I wasn't going to not third person it
@lyric fjord ability score modifiers are on page 13 players handbook
Hi, someone know of a good way to find a group to play online?
i'm having trouble finding one...
For dice, the first number is how many dice you roll, the second is how many sides.
1d6 = one six-sided dice🎲
2d20= two twenty sided dice

- You scores will be 1-20, the higher the better. A modifier is based on those scores and added to rolls. Every 2 points above 10= +1. So a 16 in con gives you +3. 9 is -1, and every two points below 9 is another -1.
2-3. Hit points are your health, and are determined by class. For example fighters get 1d10 HD, meaning at first level they get 10+con mod HP. Above that they either take 'average' (1d10=6) or roll that 1d10 and add con, then add that to their max HP. You take damage, reduce HP, if you heal, increase until you hit your max again.
Ultimately you need to throw your net wide, and be patient. #looking-for-players on this discord, r/LFG on Reddit, and the DDB and Roll20 forums are other places to try looking
A 1st level fighter with 16 con then gets 10+3 = 13 HP. That is their max HP until they level up.
tried roll20 and now here, no luck so far, but thanks a lot friend, i'll keep trying
Lets say a wolf bites them and deals 6 damage. They now have 7/13 HP.
The cleric manages to heal for 8 damage, but HP can't go above max, so they go back to 13/13 HP.
