This is only for spell slots not spells know they still follow your class rules so you would have the level 1 artificer spells know but can up cast them
Hello from Denmark 🇩🇰 👋 . Long time DM here 😉 Picked it up around 1984.
How do you set a DM role? Anyone know I've been surfing the top channels, but haven't had much luck yet.
Got it, thanks.
Importantly, artificers round up, unlike other half-casters.
Add half your levels (rounded up) in the artificer class to the appropriate levels from other classes to determine your available spell slots.
So 11 sorcerer + 1 artificer = level 12 on the multiclass spell slots table.
Oh learnt something new must really stop skim reading the books
It’s presumably because they get spellcasting a level earlier than the others (level 1 instead of 2).
That's unique, I didn't know that.

um i am a new dm ant want players
Hey all! So just a basic question, if someone in my party rolls a dexterity check and has 16 (+3) for their base stats .. How does that come into a play if they roll a 14?
Do you add the +3 making that roll a 17?
Yes, you add the Dexterity modifier to the Dexterity check roll.
For the base stats, Do they just play effect for the negative or bonus towards the roll?
Or is it dependent towards certain situations?
The ability score modifiers are dependant on the roll that is called for.
If you have a 8 Str (-1 modifier) and are using a melee weapon then you will have a -1 to your attack and damage rolls.
Ooooooh I see, so that modifier is added towards whatever set action they are trying to make basically
Either trying to be stealthy and or trying to make an attack roll?
But the base stat is only to add the set modifier, correct?
But the base stat is only to add the set modifier, correct?
I don't understand what you're trying to imply here.
Perhaps read this section on ability scores and modifiers:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#AbilityScoresandModifiers
Okay let's say the base stat 16 dexterity we were talking about, the number 16 has nothing to do with anything but give the + or - modifier towards that roll
It works like that right?
Hi! I’m extremely new to dnd and I wanna check it out and see if I could add it to my hobbies. Where do I start and what is good to know before diving into this nice community?
A 16 Dex gives you a modifier bonus of +3. You apply that +3 modifier to whatever calls for a Dex roll, such as attack with a finesse or ranged weapon, Stealth or Acrobatics check, or a Dexterity saving throw.

The guided adventure - https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en - does a really great job of giving you an idea of how things work!
Can you be a elf and a aasimar?
Yes you just use the aasimar stats but you look like an elf
Hey
Does anyone know a good dnd bot that will help determine peoples ability scores?
I would look into Avrae!
Just use point buy
How does that help them?
You are just totally disregarding their question
Well I have no idea what Avrae is and I always recommend point buy for new players
Avrae is a d&d discord bot, like what they were asking for
To tell them to just use point buy when they are asking for a discord bot is not very helpful
Point taken moving on
how hard is it to create a chaotic evil character that meshes well with other PCs? i've heard BAD stories about them, but i'm interested in making one and would like to know unspoken or golden rules for these characters so i don't go full murderhobo
I was wondering if anyone could help me with finding a group to play with preferably a not ongoing campaign
Generally you want to design your characters in a way that makes everyone at the table want to play more D&D.
If your character concept comes at the cost of someone else without their consent, then it’s a sign that you may want to consider retooling it.
Similarly, many players act out chaotic evil as “lolrandom” and commit heinous acts that cause the rest of the party to question why they’re even adventuring with them. If you hit a point where that question is broached, then your concept has likely failed.
D&D is a collaborative game so the potential problem of a CE character is that they are selfish and destructive by definition of Chaotic Evil (think the Joker). Talk to your DM about this
Personally, I don't allow CE characters at my table because they tend to be murderhobos.
one shots / pickup games is the term you may want to search for
Where do I look for one shots
i wanted to try to look for advice on creating one as a sort of failed villain or fallen knight, is there anyone i can look for to get assistance? just don't want to clog up this channel with just me talking
You can use #character-discussion for just that.
How do you find good local dnd games or find local dms looking for players
Check out services like Demiplane plus your local Facebook D&D page.
For local, I would look at local game stores, school clubs, and even libraries!
https://locator.wizards.com/ try here
hey guys im new to DnD
Thanks guys
Man closest local dnd game or event 50+ miles
If you have a local comic store or a card/board game store, that’s where I often find local groups looking to add people to their community
Some of them have a bulletin where they post the info to join
I've played a form of home brew my entire life so I don't know any of the standard rules or anything, what kind of psychic based classes are there?
Psionics aren't really a thing in 5e. However there are three subclasses that sort of fit the bill, soul knife rogue, aberrant mind sorcerer, and psi warrior fighter
how do i leave a post in the looking for dm section
i cant quite figure out how to do it
Check out #find-a-game for instructions.
would someone be able to help me out with creating a character, i have a few vauge ideas of things i want to do but I have very little knowledge about 5E so I dont know what is viable and what isnt and how to go about character creation in general. I found a place i can join games but i need a 3rd level character and i dont know how to make one.
The folks in #character-discussion can help.
Greetings, I was wondering if there is someone who could assist me with a matter, if it would not be too much of an imposition.
Just ask your question here and as folks have time and energy they can answer/respond.
I appreciate your prompt response. However, I no longer require assistance with my query as I have been able to resolve the issue independently. Thank you.
Hey folks...is there a dm about that would allow a noob player/DM to be a spectator to an online game?

Why don't you watch an actual play? There are plenty on Youtube and Twitch
You can find folks playing D&D on Twitch at all hours of the day.
Are there live streamed games?
Yes
Gotcha. Thank you!
Arcane Arcade does live streams every Saturday night on YouTube plus you can watch old games on there. They also play multiple systems of TTRPGs. Jocat streams weekly (I think) on Twitch. And Crispy’s Tavern uploads prerecorded gameplay to YouTube.
I’ve watched all three of these and learned lots of things from watching

How do I use a mutagem on DnD beyond
What's a "mutagem"?
It's a feature of the homebrew Blood Hunter class.
Character sheets don't support temporary effects such as mutagens, rage, etc
Hi guys, I'm a pretty new player and I joined a campaign with my Brother and friends a couple of Months ago. I had just come out of a Castlevania/Witcher high because of the Netflix shows so I ended up playing a Bloodhunter. However I greatly underestimated hoe difficult the class would be to play. I also ground that RP wise, my character was always at ends with everyone else and got into frequent arguments. I decided I didn't want that anymore and wrote a new character.
Is a Wizard/Artificer multiclass a complex or difficult class to play? I love the idea of being a Clockwork magician but I'm being told that kind of build isn't going to be easy for me to use.
Multiclassing will create intricacy, especially within understanding how the spellslots granted by both classes work together
If a monoclass blood hunter was a bit much, perhaps playing a less feature rich monoclass will be a better choice?
If you're a new player to D&D I would recommend to sticking to one class. It's hard enough to master one class but two is even more difficult, especially a spellcasting one.
Spellcasters are not that complicated at level 1
As a player all ya really need are
PHB
TCA
XGA
Right?
Depends on what races and subclasses you want to play with
So am I still missing some races and subclasses? Because I'm just looking to try and get all the right books
If you’ve got the money to buy them 3,then sure go for it more options is always good, don’t forget you can always buy individual races and subclasses as and when needed
Oh I'm on about the physical books not DDB
I get DDB is easy to manage and stuff but I like having the physical books and don't want to buy them twice
Monsters of the Multiverse would give you most of the missing races
Ah physical books then yes them 4 will give you most of what you need
Isn't there a Rules expansion box with the later 3 books for ~£100/$100?
https://dnd.wizards.com/products/rules-expansion-set yes there is
what books are specifically on races, lore, and the dnd world?
There are no books specifically on races or the D&D world
There are setting books, which will cover the lore of given settings
Monsters of the Multiverse contains the most player race options.
There are multiple different setting guides out like Rising from the Last War, Explorer's Guide to Wildemount etc
For example:
Explorer's Guide to Wildemount (Exandria)
Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica
Mythic Odyssey's of Theros
Spelljammer: Adventures in Space
If you are a new player, get the PHB, live with just that and learn the classes one at a time. Don't Multiclass, don't expand race, don't do anything strange out of the expansions... Just do the basics first, And when you can do that, then start thinking about a Mind flayer/Clockwork/Fire Genasi Druid/Artificer with split personality CE/LG psychological problems.... You can min/max when you are more experienced with your theoretical and practical ability of the game.
I'm attempting to create a human cleric that uses greatclubs, the sheer amount of languages is confusing to me
i'm using the beyond dnd thing to create it
Consider what world your DM is in and base it off that. I personally would think where my character comes from and what makes sense for the story, rather than trying to "pick the very best ones"
so step 1 is finding a dm and then make a character?
ya don't need to think about the ones you don't recognize right away either. the list on Beyond has even me confused since the additions of spelljammer and dragonlance languages etc
Nothing wrong with making character concepts stick to point buy, keep your backstory vague so it can be tailored to a setting when you find a DM
no kidding... and many of these "languages" are ethnic groups of one race. So, not just "common"; but there differences between Waterdhavian, Selunese, Thay, Cormyrian....
would a cleric speak celestial?
only if they worship LG gods
dragonlance and eberron is core dnd?
If you are making a Beyond character, think about what kind of person your character is and what their backstory is. If I were making a human cleric, I'd pick my god's language, common and one other terrestrial language (elven, dwarven, draconic).
Well, Eberron is defo Core Dnd. Dragonlance is more of an expansion, because of the way dragonborn and draconians are handled
does dnd have its own set of gods or are they based off real world religions?
but remember if you make a Warforged type character, that only really works in Eberron. Per canon, there are no warforged in Dragonlance or Forgotten Realms
The original Dnd gods were all based off world mythology. An old school book called Dieties and Demigods explained all that for 1st edition, and where Gygax got it all
i'm on wikipedia is that list correct for 5e?
yes
Each setting has their own pantheon, and the back of the player's handbook (I think) has a list of other pantheons for inspiration like the Greek, Norse and Egyptian ones
is a setting an entire world or a location on one large world?
entirely different realms?
yes. each and all of those can count as the "setting" for a given campaign.
the setting you play in really depends on your DM and the table all together.
so step 1 get all the details from the dm and then step 2 create the character specific to the setting (world) you're playing in?
i assume each book has different classes and races and general rules
Sorry for bring this topic again, but i still feel a little bitter as my top 1 PC dead, mainly because of the bad luck as well as RPG impacts on my Pc's death (There are still many factors affecting why i love him so much). How can I, as a new player, overcome this? I know this is just a game but stil....
what's stopping you from making a new one?
a new favorite character
"Use Prerequisites
Allow or restrict choices based on rule prerequisites for the following for this character
Feats
Multiclass Requirements" should i enable or disable these?
Enable
i assume i should use encumbrance and coin weight too
you should, especially if you are making an AL character
AL?
Adventure League
I already have a new character, let's say i'm an oldschool player who puts your whole heart in this character, if i don't want to say he is the founder of my dnd hobby
official DnD league play
start another campaign with a different group and use that character then?
he may be dead in that universe but he surely couldn't of died in every single one
Well the only advice is make up am epic closing scene for your old character's life story and go invent his son, who comes back to avenge his death
are humans restricted to the languages they can speak/understand?
Like it's been 3 days, and i'm still emotional about his death. That's it
Not necessarily, apollo. Dragons would insist that no human can possibly understand the nuances of the draconic tongue, but human can speak it (language of magic)
i wanted to pick giant but i'm not sure if it's in the lore that humans can understand/speak it
If it make sense to your character then they can have any language
if your character comes from an area that is inhabited by giants, then it is possible he speaks it
for example, your Greyhawk cleric hails from the Sterich or Geoff or the Barrier Peaks. Lots of giants there
If Forgotten Realms.then the Sword Coast is rife with giant activity
backstory wise orphaned human raised by half giant who finds faith in a church of a neutral good church who's focus is on wealth and healing so i kind of wanted to build a large cleric who uses a big club with a decent amount of health and strength and some healing spells
sounds great
more as like a crushing defensive character then per say an aggressive fighter type
doesn't matter. If you like the character, then do it.
is there a video that goes into depth on all the different languages in 5e?
for cleric is intel or wis more important?
One of my favorite characters was a blacksmith-turned-fighter folk hero. He was a half-orc who used a masterwork maul and a masterwork crowbar as weapons, but he was generally a pacifist.
there might be but nothing canon.
STRENGTH
14
TOTAL: 15
DEXTERITY
8
TOTAL: 9
CONSTITUTION
13
TOTAL: 14
INTELLIGENCE
15
TOTAL: 16
WISDOM
12
TOTAL: 13
CHARISMA
10
TOTAL: 11
Wisdom is most important for cleric
that's what i have laid out
oh okay
i'll swap the wis and intel
If you really want to min/max, then keep in mind that modifiers increase every even number. So having a 15 is the same in game mechanics as having a 14.
arcana and religion seem the same to me
what's the difference?
or is there not much of one
arcana is magic for mages (spellcasting using the magic of the world); religion is getting spells given to you by the gods.
so you would use Knowledge Arcana to determine the spell that was just cast. You use Knowledge Religion to determine what god has influence here
starting equipment if you choose a background do you get both the cleric starting equipment and the background starting equipment or do you pick and choose in this case?
Both
you get both
i assume celestial = the language of the deities or do they speak in race specific languages?
Celestial is a creature type. most, if not all Celestial creatures speak Celestial. i,e angels, archangels, solars, planetars, etc
and yes probably also most gods
pelor or Lathander seem like a good choice for the character
Pelor - Neutral good god of the sun and healing. Pelor's symbol is a sun Lathander - Neutral good god of birth and renewal. Lathander's symbol is a road travelling into a sunrise.
please review and let me know what you think
We have #character-discussion for that
alright
yes, I've never played dnd
my brother plays with his friends every sunday so i picked up a set of chessex translucent dice from a local game shop
oh nice

well that was conviniant
how common are text based roleplays in the #looking-for-players ? i'd really really want to find one
though dms can find fluent celestial kinda op at lvl 1
Why?
Probably not terribly common, but I've ran a few in my past.. never really had the proper group to keep them going for very long though
cus you literally speaking the language of gods, meaning you could communicate effectively with dieties
agh thats too bad since i'd love to be able to join one since i'm very active
At that point it really depends on how the Gods "speak" if they can even be heard by a mortals ears, and on top of all of that if they are even relevant to the campaign in the first place
true
So a cleric who’s spent their whole life in service to a church and studies the word of their god would know the language of their god?
I'd probably consider building one if I had a good crew, text based rp is where I'm most comfortable when it comes to hosting
my dm limited it cus he wanted to make gods closer to human level
Or, alternatively, celestial is the language used by priests in temples, like how draconic is often the language of magic
D&D has a great degree of flexibility in terms of making things work
rather than being these outright super op beings they were just super powerfull mages etc which had lived for thousands of years
aka anyone could become a god, and 1 criteria was being fluent in celestial
if you ever do it again- i'm always available as an option if you need me! i'd be happy to keep you company!
That's a fair point, no one ever stated that celestial is the language of the Gods themselves, it could be a simple answer of that's the language that the old books and tomes are written in.. perhaps the Gods themselves speak in an entirely different language entirely
I said entirely twice there...
I mean I'd be more than happy to bounce things off you, maybe introduce you to my crew of friends who I'm currently DMing a campaign for. I'm sure they'd love to give it a try themselves
Youre just going to have to look through all the listings in the channel to find one, take a while to find the right game for you
sweet! feel free to DM me if you'd like to talk more if they'd be willing to have me hop on, i'm a new player but i'm happy to take a backseat role for a while!

Hello and greetings everyone 👋
Hello everyone! Im a new dm and I just Dm’ed my first session yesterday and my party was fighting a bugbear and a few others. Most of them are new aswell and have a max of 11 hp and a bugbears average attack with the morningstar is 11hp and later on the enimies hit much harder. Does anyone have a good way to nerf down the enemies a bit without making combat seem easy/boring?
Change the damage dice for their attacks
Sounds good, thanks!
I just started playing D&D a week ago and went to my first one-shot session last weekend. Created a Dragonborn Pally and might roll a Bard next
Hey all, I am looking to get into playing D&D and was recommended to come to this server. I have played most DnD pc games over the years. And played a fair amount of online role play in neverwinter nights. But never in person before. I bought some dice… that’s about all I’ve got so far! I live in West London.

Hey, I'm new to D&D all together. I don't have many or any friends that I can get to play or learn this with. Someone in a local 40k store suggested trying to join an online group? Is this something that anyone is aware of or if I could please join? I'd be really grateful of the chance. Thank you :).

quick question:
is there any bundle out there with german books and redeem codes for dndbeyond ?
I don’t think there’s been any announcements about D&D Beyond content being available in other languages.
So where do I start looking for groups that need players??
Check that bot message a few lines up. ☝🏻
I made a character. But am unsure where to go from here.
Ah ok
There are channels here for new groups??
Damn I might need a Discord tutorial lol.
There are some good beginners’ guides to Discord on YouTube.
the dnd beyond stuff can be english but i would want to buy the books in german
Currently the only books that come with codes are the ones sold here:

alright thank you 🥲
There is an EU shop, apparently, but it looks like that's also English versions.

i would say my english is pretty okay but if i have to dm something i would like to read it in my native language at least
I believe French, German, Spanish and Japanese language versions are in the works
You could always DM an adventure (or more) from DMsGuild. In addition to official D&D material, it hosts third-party content, including adventures. You can filter by language.
They're already available. Have been for about a year and a half.
Just not currently in a format that also includes a code for DDB.
Are they strictly in physical? I had a hard time finding any retailers selling those, even.
Yeah
would be a godsent
do you think this will happen anytime soon ?
They've explicitly stated they want to offer physical + digital wherever possible.
Right now things are kind of in a test phase (since WotC bought DDB last year) while they figure out what works and what doesn't.
But I couldn't guess as to how or when we'll see the next steps there.
I think I recall something about looking at getting the other language versions on DDB. Was it maybe discussed at the creator summit?
DDB does have the Italian PHB, which was done as sort of a test for supporting additional languages.
But that was before the acquisition by WOTC.
i just read on ddb faqs they dont have an announcement but they are looking to improve the website
How big of an ask is it to be a dark elf/drow?
Not that big. It’s a PHB option. However, if your DM is using their own setting or adjusting the rules then that answer can change pretty drastically.
PHB?
Drow are in the PHB as a playable race.
Players hand book
?phb
The Player's Handbook (PHB) is an official sourcebook containing the full core rules of the game. The book is everything a player needs to create heroic characters for Dungeons & Dragons the world’s greatest roleplaying game. My friend and i have been trying to get into a DnD campaign but keep having people flake out on us when he (begrudgingly) sets up a campaign.
Any tips on reducing that?
Vet the players. Make sure they understand the fixed date/time for the sessions.
You add your Proficiency Bonus to it
Yes
ok cool, and i have a question about saving throws in general. so from my understanding, when i am faced with a, per se, unfortunate situation, the dm would have me roll a saving throw according to the situation.
so for example if suddenly rocks start falling, i could do a dexterity or a constitution saving throw do avoid/tank them, right?
In theory, yes. The DM would let you know what to roll.
in that case, whats a situation where a charisma saving throw would be applicable?
just curious
Certain spells or monster abilities.
Bane, for example.

iiinteresting thanks
Hey do any y’all know how to create a looking for dm

Read the free Basic Rules (at least the first four chapters on character creation).
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
Both are linked above.
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
I’m going to check out how to make a character. I was using character ai to make a makeshift solo game but it didn’t really work
Learn the rules of the game first before you dive into using AI to generate an adventure. You're trying to sprint before you know how to crawl.
Yeah I figured that, the ai alos kept changing my stats around but none of my friends play it
Hello there! I just finished my first DnD game, I was a DM, it was fun, I played using the dragons of stormwreck isle starter
You can find online games to join.
I’m looking at some, but I wanted to get a bit of advice on how it’s actually played before I jump in
Check out the links above. Watch some actual plays on Youtube/Twitch.
I’m checking out the links the now, it’s different from what I thought, I thought the dm designed the entire world but it seems there’s already a pre-made world and quests
There's multiple styles and approaches to D&D.
Yes to both.
Some DMs homebrew their own campaign world and adventures while others use premade ones.
Both are valid.
Both seem fun, like being a player and a dm
For an assassin build is rouge the best choice
I want to make sure since i am still newish to 5e. Im not seeing snow elves as a subrace am i blind or are they not a thing in 5e?
well there is an assassin subclass for rogue so i would say yes lol
I didn’t even know there were subclasses
Again, read the Basic Rules. You're getting ahead of yourself.
every vlass has subclass options. Most are unlocked at level 3 but a few are unlocked at level 1. it just depends on the base class
Any class can be an assassin, though.
They are not an official elf sub-race in 5E.
Snow Elves are not a thing in the official rules. ✌️
ok thank you
thank you
But you could totally talk to your DM about being one anyway.
well of course lol.
If im stuck to just a phone is playing still possible? I also don't have a ubundance of time due to work and stuff
But I really want to get into dnd
I think playing from mobile is possible, though that does present some technical challenges depending on what tools your group uses, if any.
I don't have a group and I've only kinda dona a single home brew as a artiphicer
If your group plays online with a VTT, that would be a big technical issue. Some VTTs may not work very well on a mobile device due to various reasons including a small screen and the UI/UX.
By your group, I mean the group you eventually join.
Fair in a few weeks (hopefully not any longer than that) I'll be able to have my pc and stuff set back up in a apartment (life happened lol)
I tend to play a lawful good Dwarven of some kind artificer since they are sorta tied to Norse mythos and stuff
I'm aware of the resource and time heavy playstyle that intells
Since artificers aren't one of the core classes, I'd either look strictly for groups that allow it or brainstorm other character concepts.
That's fair the one I used in home brew was also a gunner or ranged fighter?
Idk the proper term but I loved it
attack bonus is equal to my proficiency bonus, correct?
how play game
It's proficiency bonus (if proficient in the weapon) plus the relevant stat bonus (STR for melee, DEX for ranged, either for finesse).
Ye I had a gun I made that was expensive af and did a ton of dmg but it was slow to move and had a chance to backfire on me
ATK bonus = proficiency bonus + the associated ability score
👍 thanks
I would check this out - https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
It was based on a gun from monster hunter 3 ultimate
ok, ty. I've always wanted to try (hence why im in this discord) but never really got around to it.
is thrown also considered ranged?
If it's a weapon you'd normally use STR for, you'd use it even if throwing.
ohhhh mb. i didnt see that the handaxe was melee, i just read "thrown" and i thought you could only throw it
Yeah the handaxe could definitely be used as melee weapon, and I personally would rule it as a finesse weapon as well but that's just me
I would be impressed if you can chop wood wiith Dexterity.
finesse for an axe ?
I know I know
But handaxes (or tomahawks) are much smaller and lighter than your usual axe
It obviously isn't going to be as finesse (pun intended) as a dagger or a rapier, but I still think with enough skill a character could totally be dexterous with it
Well, you can say that of a lot melee weapons but the point of 5E is simplicity of rules.
Yeah, and again this is purely my interpretation of the weapon as a whole
I think 5E actually does a very good job at simplifying the rules, and the fact that handaxes aren't finesse completely fine
An issue with handaxes not being finesse is because it has one striking side and the amount of damage (via kinetic energy) from the force on its axe head.
Sorry my brain is having trouble comprehending that lol, are you saying that a potential reason as to why a handaxe isn't finesse is because of its singular edge and how axes cause physical damage in general?
Axes cause damage because of their heavy axe heads (relatively to their shaft, not unlike mace and hammers). The amount of damage is done by the kinetic energy of not only the mass of of the axe head but the force of the swing, aka kinetic energy. (You need Str to do damage with axes, maces, and hammers)
Rapiers wouldn't need much kinetic energy to pierce skin since the force is concentrated on its pointy tip.
People have created a vast variety of weapons to specialize against certain things. Most blades are useless against full plate armour so bludgeoning weapons are used (may not dent it but still can cause concussion to the knight underneath the armour).
That's my biggest beef with 5E weapons is that they're boring. I'm glad that 5.5E (aka One D&D) will give extra properties to weapons to give some spice to combat.
Yeah I agree
And I have yet to look into a lot of 5.5E but what I have seen/heard about is really cool
I think i understand this a lot more after that, thanks
Anyone willing to dm a 1 on 1 game Tuesday and Sunday (my only days off) I would post in the lfg but it won't let me
It won't let me post there just rerouts me here is there somthing I missed in roles?
Read the instructions in #find-a-game
Thanks didn't see that before also sorry for being blind
How do I get roles in this server?
Thx
im confused and could use hepl with the appearance of a warlock's otherworldly patron- and i could use help with a Fiend, is there a baseline as to what one would look like?
It can look how ever you want, it’s your head cannon how your patron appears to you, some warlocks are played without ever knowing what their patron looks like
i'd love for my GF to be my patron and whenever appropriate have things be a romcom during downtime or roleplay sessions
Talk to and work with your DM on the patron.
yeah! i should definitely do that before everything else, i'm sure they can help out a lot! thanks for the answers and advice
I'd also add that such a thing should be discussed with the table as a whole. Not everyone would be comfortable with that kind of dynamic.
i understand! thanks for your addition
i completely know what you're talking about
where'd the stereotype of magic users spamming and constantly using fireball come from?
Good question. Probably some combination of it being iconic and also powerful relative to its (early-ish) level.
Also probably a reasonably common spell on quite a few class/subclass lists in the Basic Rules
I am a noob to D&D and I was wondering if you guys have any groups that play to just play and learn?

The quick-start guide below explains how to find a game here on our server. Check out #find-a-game for the channel rules, FAQ, and off-server game options.
• #750812887697588356 has players who are ready to join a game.
• #looking-for-players has unpaid DMs offering a traditional D&D experience: a single party playing together through a shared adventure.
• #looking-for-community has free community-style games like West Marches, One-Shot locators, and more. These are easy to join and regularly active, but you might play with different people each session.
• #paid-looking-for-game has games that require payment to join. These games might offer a more professional DM experience or more consistent participation.

See the embedded message right above you
The "?looking" wasn't a question but a command for the bot.
Also if you can't see the embedded message from the bot check to make sure your Discord is up to date and that under Settings -> Text & Images you have Embeds and Link Previews enabled.
Thank you guys
Are we allowed to post LFP for FGU here?
Not here in this channel, but yes on the server. Check out #find-a-game for instructions.
FGU?
Fantasy Grounds Unity = FGU
Also, I was looking there, but it says I do not have permission.
That channel gives you the instructions on how to use the bot
Hey everyone! Hope all is well. I've never played DnD before and my family and I wanted to learn and start to play. I would love any tips or resources that would help on this epic journey. Thank you so much in advance for any and all help. I have looked in the dnd games help section as well!
Welcome!
If you check out the pinned posts here, there are some resources to help you get started, even a guided adventure to help understand what a game is like
Thank you 😄 I really appreciate that! I will look back at that and check it out. Im so excited to start playing!!
Hey all, back again 🙂
I just picked up the refreshed starter kit (stormwreck isle) to play for the first time
Is there supposed to be a digital key in the box, or do I have to pay (again 🙂 ) for that?
There is no digital code
Only the Essentials Kt comes with digital codes.
ooh found the newcomer chat
ah that sucks - is there a good place to buy the digital copy of stormwreck? Its more expensive than the physical set lmao
alright ima ask something how can u create characters in dnd its confusing as hell
to me
I think the only digital options are DnD Beyond, Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds
Have you looked at the rules yet?
i will look at them rn
alrighty i just read the discords rules cause im assuming thats what you meant
Basically, you pick a race and a class that you find interesting, assign stats and pick some equipment
I meant the rules for the game
ima be honest no

Hi
I thought with this server being so big finding a game would be easier... 😦
Same though- I'm limited to only text rn because my mic is broken
I dont do voice because of working from home, so i get that
I do need a bit of help
What is the challenge rating a level 2 party can handle
Of maybe 5 - 6 peopel
This table in XGtE is a great guide for selecting the CR of solo boss monsters:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/xgte/dungeon-masters-tools#SoloMonsterChallengeRating
For your specific situation, a party of 5 or 6 2nd-level PCs can take on a CR3 or CR4 creature respectively
Although action economy will favor the party
D&D Beyond’s Encounters tool can help with the normal difficulty calculations.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/my-encounters
guys so what is the least i need to read bout for playerhandbook, feels like its too much (as a DM)
Chapters 7-10 are a must.
1-6 all deal with character creation.
So that’s more for your players, but they may have questions for you, so it would help to have some familiarity with the process.
Chapter 11 is spell descriptions; you could just wait on those until you need the details of a specific spell.
ye thats what Im worried bout, im scared I cant give em an answer xD
Feel free to make a ruling in the moment but it's always good to come back and figure out what would be the correct way to rule it and make sure to communicate that to the players. I DM and I mess up stuff all the time - as long as you're focussed on making sure everyone is having fun (including you), it's not a big issue.
alright thx. im trying to at least get everything familiarize cuz I dun want ma bois to keep waiting. Since a busy month will be coming not long
Sure - have a general idea of the game mechanics is always good! But at the end of the day, we're playing a game to have fun together.
what is a good class for Dragonborn? the only class ive tried was sorcerer and omg it is so complicated
There really isn't a bad race/class combo
okay
A martial class like Fighter might be easier to get started with.
alr
Try Paladin
can you get into the game and start playing day-1 or is there a learning curve?
You can but there is a bit of a curve
I suggest going through the guided adventure- https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en -
To get an idea of what it's like
@pseudo frost thanks :3
can we shar characters here?
I just made my first character kinda proud of it
I love hopping into a server and seeing familiar names
Oh? You know me from somehwere, @barren swan?
ah
mnnn, idk if you can share ur character here but id love to see!
I'll DM him to you :3
okii
We have #character-discussion!
thx
how do adding subclasses work
like I am making a horizon walker ranger, how do I add it to the character sheet
you can write in your subclass next to your class on the top of the sheet then add the subclass features to your feat area on the character sheet
Ranger Archetype. At 3rd level, you choose an archetype that you strive to emulate: the Hunter that is detailed at the end of the class description or one from another source. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 11th, and 15th level.
This feature in your ranger character creation rules explains it
When you hit one of the listed levels, you add the features from your chosen subclass into the features section of your character sheet
thank you
Where do I start, I am familiar with the concept.. but noone I know will play w me..

For local games it's wrangling friends to play a short fun oneshot to get them interested, or looking on facebook or meetup.com, or local game stores for an established group.
You can check out the channels above, looking for games in #looking-for-players that seem interesting and join the thread/pm the owner, and you can advertise yourself in #750812887697588356 . AL (Adventure League) is also a good start as they tend to be more open games that so long as you make an AL legal character, you have a good bet of joining a table and meeting people. Oneshots can also be a good idea to look out for, as they don't need much commitment and if you don't all click, it was only for a short game.
It can take a little time to just find people who's playstyle meshes with yours, so with online games, keep in contact with players you got along with, and hopefully they're also doing that, and then you can make a new group from that network.
Helloooo d&d, so uh hi my name's jade and at first i wanted to play d&d cause of stranger things then after s2? Or s3? I forgot but when dnd kind of disappeared from stranger things then after s4 ended i forgot about stranger things and then i watched the d&d movie without that much knowledge about d&d and well d&d then after that i remembered d&d again and how it was in alot of media and realized that it's an rp game then went to character ai and went on those rpg ai's and got a blast just playing it so then i decided to ACTUALLY have enough time to actually understand d&d and character sheets and watch "crap guide on d&d" and well same with my cousins there also new to d&d and we decided to play d&d for the 1st time next Friday or Saturday and well of course i have to be the dm for this one as I'm the one who binged watched "crap guide on d&d" the hardest that I've learn is how character sheets work anyway i am still a noob and forgets how the character sheet work so anyway does anyone have like a tip for me on becoming more PRO on d&d specially the fact that i still don't have a d20 and don't wanna spend money on books telling me how to play.

Hi there! Check out the links Davyd posted for you up above my post. There are links to the free basic rules on D&D Beyond. In addition, you can also snag one of the best adventures for beginner players and DMs on there for free. It’s called Lost Mines of Phandelver and it is designed for entry level players like you and your group.
As far as becoming a pro goes the best way is to dive in. On top of that it’s good to make sure your players know to play with you rather than against you. You’re learning the rules just as much as they are so take the game slow, be willing to crack those rules open as questions come up, and learn how to reference those rules so you know how to keep the game flowing.
Should I start playing as a dm or not bc I don’t know a dm and I want to play with my irl friends
Play as a player first. It's easier to learn the rules as a player than as a DM, who also has the added responsibility of organizing, preparing, and being the adult at the table.
But I don’t know a dm that’s the thing
Well, if you're volunteering to be the DM then head on over to #dm-discussion as a place to ask question / advice.
To echo the above, being a DM is generally more work than being a player; I think most people here would agree with that.
That said, you can totally start playing D&D as a DM successfully! Your first couple of sessions might be kind of shaky, but as long as your group focuses on fun, there's a good chance that you'll all walk away happy. ✌️
Ok I’ll keep that in mind
How would someone start getting into DND without friends? I’ve been reading the rules and stuff and making characters on DNDBeyond for fun, I just feel like I should try some sort of campaign but I don’t really have anyone to play with 😂- (I would try to play with other people that I’d find online, but I’m a minor so Idk if anyone would wanna play with me lol)
You can find a group that are age appropriate. For example, I am DMing my sister's kids and their friends.
Check with your school, see if there are anyone interested there
You can search for games open to different age ranges on here and on other platforms. Besides school, check if any local libraries and games/comics/hobby shops host games.
Quick question, is there a big difference between games? I've heard terms like West marches and don't really understand it. Is there East Marches too?
Westmarch is a style of play that commonly is run on a separate Discord server (or similar service). These types of games are run in the same universe and the events of one group of adventurers can impact those of another. Groups and DMs may change regularly. They're ideal for pick-up games or if you want to be part of a bigger, more interwoven narrative. Think of them a little bit like an "MMO" for tabletop games.
Ohhhh okay, that makes sense. So I've never played a game of D&D. Would it be better to start with a West March then? Or would that be a little rough?
I suspect the downside of that style of play is if you're new and expecting to have the DM/table help you learn, you may not get that kind of guided attention. But I've never tried a westmarch out, so I could be wrong!
Alright, thank you. I'm gonna try and find a game igs. I bought all the books for the most part so I should be okay with whatever is throw at me
If you're a player, you really only need to be familiar with the Player's Handbook.
Oh, did I waste a lot of money then?
Not necessarily. If you find someone willing to DM, those books will be very useful. Plus, you may decide to DM at some point yourself.
Alright, thanks for the help! I'm gonna go and try to find a game or something.
Good luck! Cast your net wide; there are lots of sites to look for games besides this server.
There are? I thought this would be my best option
Sure, there are lots of folks advertising games here, but that also means it's harder to stand out among the crowd or be successfully chosen. If everyone's trying to get in through the same door, it bottlenecks and not everyone makes it through, y'know?
Yeah that makes sense. I live in the country so we don't have libraries or game stores for like 20 miles lol. If we did I'd try looking there for a game
Makes sense.
In addition to this server, you can check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds, EN World, RPG Geek, RPGnet), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn.
Okay thank you I'll check some Youtubers out first
i wanna play dnd with someone...

which weapon have finesse and versatile/one handed except the rapier ?
Have you got the basic rules
I thought there were only the explications
Rapier is only finesse
yeah but you can hold it with 1 hand, right ?
Yes it’s one handed
hii! im new hope to make some friends, and hopefully get to play some dnd with people! :D
so which weapons can be finesse and one handed ?
Welcome check the pins in this channel for the basics
do you have the basic rules? Go read the equipment sections
Look at the list of weapons and their properties.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#Weapons
oh the shortsword
"One-handed" isn't a property you'll see in a weapon description, it's the default. Any weapon that doesn't have the "two-handed" property can be wielded one-handed.
does anyone have tips for roleplaying?

Hey everyone, I'm new here
< new, after so many years. Vtt and its promising future has drawn me in finally
You could homebrew your own races, but I would suggest sticking with official races while you are learning the game
I wanna be a skeleton tho :(
There's reborn
Oh?
Yeah, it's in Van Richtens Guide to Ravenloft. But that's gonna need DM approval for the game being played
I'll do my research, thank you for the help tho :D

@gray narwhal
Hello I’m brand new to D&D and I have a couple questions about character creation. It’s a little confusing
ask away
i used d&d beyond to make my character but im not sureif i did it correctly or how to translate it to paper
i might start over because this sheet is covered in information that im not sure is even correct
Are you planning on playing it in person or online?
in person with some of my friends
nods
which is why i have the character sheet.
You can print it in PDF form
they want me to teach them how to make a character so i have to figure it out.
there is a PDF option for DnD Beyond
i have this kit called the essentials kit and it came with character sheets
Ok, so you can transcribe them
as for if you did it right, post your character sheet in #character-discussion and people will tell you if there are any errors
Post the web link
Unless you have a DnDBeyond character sheet, you'll need to share the character sheet via a file sharing service/tools like Google Drive.
Ah ok
I have a beyond character sheet I think
It is a DnD Beyond character sheet, just post the link to it
Ive been a dm for a while but not much player experience
Any tips to really immerse yourself as a character in a campaign
I am completely new to DnD and would like to learn more and possibly play my first campaign.

Recommend checking out the free basic rules (linked in that message), watch some videos of folks playing D&D (to get a feel how the rules/game mechanics work), maybe try making a character or two just to see how that works, then find a group to play with.
will do, thanks again
Can you elaborate on what you mean?
Hi everyone 👋 I got a question: Do you think I should wait 2024 to buy the new version of the 3 core Rulebooks (DM's Guide, Player's Handbook and Monster Manual)?
I had the impression that they were announcing a new version coming...
The 2014 core rulebooks will still be usable once the 2024 versions release and they'll likely include some options and versions of options that won't be included in the 2024 version. Given you can pick them up fairly cheaply, I'd say there's little reason not to
Thank you very much for your answer, time to spend some money then! 😅
are the shields in dnd are strapped or just gripped?
They are wielded in a fashion that requires an action to don or doff, which is typically interpreted as being strapped
ive only played dnd once and had zero clue what was going on and i rly want to play again
additionally they cannot be disarmed like another held object could.
Hey guys i never played dnd before and its been a while since i wanna try it but my friends aint really into it. Is there a way i can play it online?
I recommend trying to ask around the discord, looking online, or trying to find other people to play dnd with you.
Yep, plenty of different ways! Some use VTTs (Virtual Table Tops) other's just use Discord + maybe dice bots to roll dice and play more 'theatre of the mind' (no maps or visuals, just narration)

Some information there on playing online
Does anyone have any books that I should get first after the basic 3
By 3 you mean phb, DMG, mm? I'd look at xanathars guide and Tashas cauldron
Or some modules to play
Thanks
Tashas has a new class and a ton player options, whereas xanathars is more like a DMG expansion that has a bunch of player options at the start
Are you new to the Hobbie? Have you played before?
I am currently the DM for my players and I have been playing for about a year
If it's an active game I wouldn't add too many new character options mid-campaign, wait until your next game to introduce those options imo.
Maybe get mordenkainen's monsters of the multiverse if you want some new things for them to fight
I was wondering because one of my players died and wanted to make a character using newer races/classes.
any tips for first time dms? I've been playing for years but our usual dm wanted a break so I would welcome any help 💕
are you playing in person or online?
in person!
make a spreadsheet for all the monsters you're using, include creature type, hp, ac, hit bonus, damage bonuses, a note on special attacks (just enough to remind you what it does), ability score mods, and senses.
make it as condensed as you can
can you take any eldritch invocations as long as you have the prerequisites ?
yes
- Conduct a session zero to lay out everyone’s preferences and expectations before the game even begins.
- If you haven't played at all, watch at least a few minutes of some streamed games, professional or not. It'll give you the basic idea of how play flows.
- Try to engage all the players, even if it's a just "What is your character up to?" Be wary, however. Some are perfectly happy being audience members.
- Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions. In other words, don't punish the characters for your players' bad behavior. Talk to them and try to solve the problem.
- Don't try to avoid failure. That's impossible. Instead learn from it.
- Plan something but not everything. You'll figure out your own sense of doing enough/too much over time.
- Realize you'll get curveballs all the time so be ready to improv.
- Run a pre-written adventure or one-shot to get your bearings as a DM. Doing so will help you get some practice instead of having to first build a world (even a small one) and situation. Read any content in full before you run it.
- Don't see the game as a DM-versus-players scenario. Be a fan of the players. Try to present them with settings that let them be heroic/cool/whatever they're hoping to be in-game.
- Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that all have a good time.
- Don’t try to absorb all the info at once so you’re ready. That’s like trying to learn all the baseball rules before ever picking up a bat. Know the basics, start playing, and the rest will come with time and practice.
thats one of the prerequisites
not on every invocations
which one are you thinking about specifically?
the Hexblade
he gives a lot of eldritch invocations but having it as a patron isn't always required
which invocations are you looking at?
OH THATS SO SMART tysm
ahh this is so perfect thank gou
you can squeeze it into a 12*2 cell area per creature, 13*2 if you add immunity/resistances/vulnerability
i can't send images but put creature above type, ac above HP, and proficiencies under ability score mods.
a google search for "game night blog" will lead you to the page where i found the idea, he has done it for every monster in lost mines and dragon of icespire peak
so if I have the fiend patron, I can't take any of the Hexblade invocations ?
which invocations?
Some invocations are subclass dependent I think
some of them are locked to pacts, but i cant see any that require a certain patron
That is correct, if the prerequisite of a given invocation is to have Hexblade as a patron, then you can't take that invocation if you do not have Hexblade as a patron
That said, I don't think there are any invocations which have Hexblade as a prerequisite
There are some which require Pact of the Blade, however
at this point i think he's looking at some homebrew, im going up and down the invocation list and from what i can see, there's pact invocations, level invocations, eldritch blast invocations, ones with no prereq, and like 2 that require hex spell or a curse feature (hexblade has that feature, but so does a 5th level invocation)
Well, since you'd have to ask your DM to use homebrew by default, then you could also ask your DM if you could disregard the prerequisites of a homebrew invocation.
What is the average size of a heal for something like cleric or bard
Depends on their level.
Where would i find the list?
Of...?
Heal dice
If you are talking about Hit Dice, they can be found in Chapter 3: Classes in the Basic Rules at the very start of the page
The only time you would use Hit Dice to heal yourself (only yourself and not anyone else) is during a short rest.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#ShortRest
Im just wondering what determines how much youre healed for from things like the cleric and bard
It depends on their spell, the level of the spell, and the caster level.
You read the individual spell's descriptions.
There is no chart.
A 1st-level Cure Wound spell only heals 1d8 + modifier.
Cure Wounds is a level 1 spell but it can be upcast for an additonal 1d8 per spell slot above 1st.
Thank you.
Here's a list on D&D Beyond (not all of these are true healing spells though):
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells?filter-class=0&filter-search=&filter-tags=2&filter-verbal=&filter-somatic=&filter-material=&filter-concentration=&filter-ritual=&filter-sub-class=&sort=level
Just what i needed ty
hello guys new to dnd here and my friends want me to be DM. how the hell do i start lol
Have you played a game or seen one played?
ive played twice but even from that i dont feel like i learned much at all
especially not how to dm
Even the most experienced DMs had zero experience as a DM when they first started. If you don't try then you'll never get better.
If you want to ask questions/advice on DMing head on over to #dm-discussion
I think there are multiple routes to DMing. On the one hand, you could read up on the rules to give yourself a foundation. On the other, you could just dive in and decide "We'll figure it out as we go!" Both are valid.
There are lots of pre-written adventures out there, so you don't have to build anything from scratch. There's also lots of advice on YouTube and in blogs.
The basic loop is the DM describes the situation, the players react to it, and the DM narrates their success/failure (and also reacts to that as through the world/NPCs). If you can manage that sort of call-and-response, you can DM.
so ive bought the starter set with lost mines of phandelver. do i need to read the whole rule book and module? i dont feel like i have agrasp on how exactly to play yet like what skill checks to ask for and when, how to even start the adventure like literally what words come out of my mouth to start it?
Read the adventure in full, yes. I didn't read the full rulebook when I started DMing, but I had been playing for a while, so it's probably worth reading the rules too. It's make-believe, so the rules are to help facilitate that so people don't "Nuh uh" each other constantly. If you play "wrong" by not 100% following the rules, no D&D police are gonna show up and shut the game down.
There are many D&D Youtubers, such as How to D&D, who have tutorial/advice videos on running Lost Mine of Phandelver.
You should definitely read the entire adventure because it's rather sandbox-y so you need to prep yourself to what your players may decide to do.
Hey! I've played DnD once with my family, and now I'm part of my first real campaign with friends
Hey i just started what do I do here

Hello! I'm new to D&D, but I think I'm pretty comfortable with the basic rules and willing to learn along the way. I watch a lot of campaigns like Critical rule and-... Well... that's really it- but I've never gotten a chance to play it myself, reason being that I don't really have anyone to play with or to show me the ropes
Oh!- Hello Somi- you and me are sort of in the same boat, haha ( "^v^)

Thank you! You too ( ^v^)
Sorry to ask, but which channel would I go to in order to talk with other players?
It depends on what you're discussing, actually. For general D&D conversation, there's #dnd-discussion. For anything not-D&D, #non-dnd-topics.
Okay. Thank you
I’m doing the “we learn as we go”
It’s kinda slow but fun we are all learning
It's a game, so fun is key. If that's happening, it's going well!
Are you a good DM?
Or have any tips cuz I don’t feel like I’m doing to well on explaining the world
My players seem to think so.
If you want some tips, #dm-discussion is the place to go!
What’s the command for long rest using the avrae bot
I'd head to #ddb-avrae-help.
Let me know how it is going for you. Will be DM'ing for the first time for a group of people who never played dnd before. I have nearly no playing experience either. It will be a learn as we go for me too.
Hi, I just started DnD and wanted to make a character on the official website, which one is better for advancements? Milestones or XP?
Depends what your DM decides.
oh
I’d ask somebody more experienced 😂
I think I will go ask the people in the DM-channel maybe they have some tips for me/us XD
where did the stereotype of dragons keeping tons of gold in their dungeons come from? do they even understand the concept of money?
Feeds the ego I think. Theyre sentient. cant they take human form?
From myths and fiction like The Hobbit.
If you read Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, the book explains why dragons want a hoard of treasure.
aw man, i haven't read it
I’m new to DND, was curious if somebody would care to hop in a call and explain a few things? Preferably an experienced DM
Direct message me please 🙂
If you have questions then ask here. There are plenty of people willing to help.
It also helps if you have read the (free) Basic Rules first.

@knotty crest don´t be fuzzed if you don´t understand it first time, very often you learn it a lot easier just by playing
That is basically what I was thinking
Again, I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube. The videos are easier to digest than reading walls of text.
Watching it right now

Really like any new game you try - the first time is like mental chaos and then as you keep reading and playing it begins to click and soon it's almost second nature.
That said I've been playing this game for a while and I still mess up stuff. 😂
so making a game for a group of friends should I just use a preset? or make my own world and stuff
I'm just trying to learn everything I can so I can be a dungeon master for my friends irl, we've been wanting to do a D&D session since high school
If you're new to the game I recommend running a pre-written adventure so you can focus more on the game mechanics rather than trying to create and manage a whole worls, the NPCs, and everything else.
I mean like what's the point of being a Dm if you don't even know how the dice works lol
I would recommend you use a prewritten adventure instead of homebrewing everything from scratch.
The Lost Mine of Phandelver adventure is free with all D&D Beyond accounts. It was written for new players and DMs in mind.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
whats the playtime on that? they just wanted to try the game to see if we wanted to do a real campaign, was going to try to make a micro one that lasts maybe 5 sessions max
Pacing is up to your players.
You can run just the first chapter of it - might take 2-4 hours depending on how things go. Or shorter if they seriously fail the first encounter (which is possible).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
And yeah that is also very true - your players drive the pace.
they are Slow
Ran the first chapter of LMoP last night with a brand new group of 3 players. Including character creation it took them about 3 hours.
were you a new dm?
No.
so like 6 hours
is 4 max? or are there 5 player setups
There's no max.
But after a certain point it gets unweildy.
I understand that, but in the presets too?
You can have 1 to as many player as you can handle. However, 4 to 5 is the optimal number of players for me.
4-6 is the recommended I think
Most adventures are designed for 4-6 players + DM
The more players mean more time inbetween turns during combat as well as social interactions (aka roleplaying)
Laat night we had 3
They could have used one more player to be more effective in combat tbh.
I ran the module as written, but I had to pull some punches near the end to not kill them.
Originally I had three players, gained another then two others but then lost all three new players but now gained three new players (back to six in total).
TL;DR run the game with whomever you have. Don't worry about the number of players too much.
Wanna run two groups?
Or ask one of the others to be a DM of a group of 3.
nah ill just upset some people
You mean just be selective of who you want to join?
Just tell the others they are on a waitlist. haha
ello
Then they have to be upset.
i have no clue how to play dnd

all i know is hehhe funny charater and dice go brrr
im hoping to learn from expirence
Learn the rules. The DMs are busy enough as it is to handhold you. The more you know the less pressure it is on them.
k
The Handbooker Helper videos (linked above) are very useful.
tell me if im missing anything
so u create a charater with a race and class and the amount of health of ur charater depends on ur class
to do an action like fishing u have to role a dice and if it roles high then u do it decently or amazingly however if u role a low number u fail it and could get hurt
also races have abillitys that some dont
Your class and Constitution score modifier determines your hp. (All level 1 characters start off with max hp)
got it
btw thanks for the help
Fishing isn't a normal skill you train in. Your DM may ask you to roll (or not).
also i heard when u get to level 3 u get a sub class
Playable races (aka species) have certain racial abilities, such as darkvision.
and flight
Most classes get their sub-class at level 3. Others get theirs at level 1 (clerics and warlocks)
so would u say i uderstand the basics
Go watch the Handbooker Helper videos

I want to play DnD (from Discord) but i fear i might not have the equipment i need (mic not good enough etc.)
What is the bare minimum i need to not annoy the people i am playing with?
If youd like to test your mic or perhaps even play a oneshot I could be of service.
Im just using the mic built into my computer
Am I allowed to find a player for my (right now /oneshot) game in this channel or is that frowned upon?
Im sorta targeting newer players.

DM me
Have you read the rules yet?
Why?
Because that's usually how you do better in games is by knowing a bit how the game works.
Because you will probably waste people's valuable time going in blind without any knowledge of the game. The DM is probably very busy to teach you the fundamentals and that would upset the other players.
Help the DM by learning the basics first.
Knowing is half the battle.
That said there are DMs who are willing to help new players to the game, but again the more you know it's easier on the DM (I'm saying this as someone who has DMed for 40+ years)
Okay cleaning up.
As far as joining someone's online game is roll20/dnd beyond free for me to join in?
For the lfp that says they use those?
They are free to join and use, yes.
So the pay part is for dm mostly or?
Usually but not always.
USB Headsets in the $20-35(US prices) range from reputable brands should work just fine. If you don't have one and intent to play D&D online regularly, it's a worthwhile expense.
Hello, it's my first time being in this server and playing dnd. I was just wondering if there is anything I need for dnd? (Me and my campaign are do in-person dnd, not online)
Do you have the Players Handbook or a copy of the free Basic Rules?
I have a online copy of the basic rules, but no player handbook.
Dice (digital or physical), the rules, character sheets.
I want to create a character for a campaign I plan to participate in but I don't know which features of a character are essential and which are optional, there is so much to add otherwise
Any help?
You definitely need:
- Race
- Class
- Ability Scores
- Background
- Starting Equipment
You may need to select some spells, too.
And a name!
It's a good idea to have several character concepts and to go through the practice of building a character with the rules to understand the process.
Thanks for the help
I just seem to get lost easily and tend to think characters are overdetailed
Do I have to be a certain level to post in looking for players/dm?
Nope.
As far as traits for personality, ideals, bonds, and flaws. Those are some details might seem to be unnecessary, and can be in some games, but they can be important for role play and story as for why your character is traveling
Stating this just in case those might have been some of things you felt were overdetailed
if anyone wants to play lmk i cant get my post to work
anyone know a group or two I can join? I'd love to learn how to play :3

are there any rules as written(?) regarding what a character is capable of starting with in terms of equipment? i came across chapter 5 and was curious how far it could be taken- would it usually be up to the DM what constitutes as reasonable?
In terms of what rules a DM can modify, there is no limit
But it is always the DMs decision
They can tell their players to start with a bunch of legendary items for all it matters, although the balance implications of that might come back to bite them
Unless told otherwise, just use the starting equipment instructed by your class/background
If you're starting at level 1 then it's very likely that's what a DM would have you start with what's suggested in the rules.
Hey, I am new to dnd so can anyone help me with getting started?
These links are a great place to get started with

Ok
If I have a question about the balancing of an homebrew race me and my DM are making, where should I ask it?
Just ask it here and I'll see if I can help
No one
FYI dnd isn’t like a mmo where you can drop straight into a game you need a DM first and that normally takes a while to find them there’s a bit of set up needed to get a campaign started
Ok
So I watched Venom recently and it gave me an idea for a character that's basically a human fighter that merged with a mimic but we're not sure how to make it balanced, we were thinking about replacing the normal stat of the human race for a +2 in strength/+1 constitution with proficiency in intimidation roll but I'm not sure about balancing since this is my first long term game (I did play a few oneshot before). I am also looking to make it not too hard to use in-game since I am a newbie player and I don't want to drag the group down.
Easy peasy my man I got you
Grand master
Did you want to be the human and the symbiote or just the symbiote?
I sholl playith to winith
If youre looking for a game stax then LFP chat is the best place, thats where I get my players for my mini campaigns
#looking-for-players , sign up to a game that sounds fun to you and the DM will invite you there.
I (the player) plays as the human with kinda like an ghost companion that I hear over my shoulder type of thing. (But more... physical AKA venom popping around Eddie's shoulder.)
Bet, I think the best thing to do then is to take a bit of kalashar flavor and some simic hybrid mechanics and fuse them into a full symbiote, Give me 2 min and I'll send you how it could work

Its been sent!
Let me know what you think
That's really cool:)
I'm gonna send this to my DM and see what he thinks of the idea!
Perfect
Where do you guys play DND? I mean face to face or on web. I just create my first character on D&D Beyond, what's next
And my character is a dragonborn warlock, I cant remember all the magic names what can i do
FYI dnd isn’t like a mmo where you can drop straight into a game you need a DM first and that normally takes a while to find them there’s a bit of set up needed to get a campaign started
do racial feats work the same as regular feats ?
Pretty much, but you can only get them if you meet the racial requirements.
sure
(Note that means they stop working if you ever stop being that race somehow, like shapechange, reincarnate, wildshape...)
Oh shoot, I had never even realized this 😮
So me and my friends are all new to dnd I dm’d mines of philander and we tried a bit of water deep dragon heist but we didn’t really like the story or setting. Any campaigns you guys could recommend? We don’t mind something challenging and we prefer more role play stuff then and combat
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/twbtw this one is apparently RP heavy
if my familiar dies, do I have to gather all the materials from the Find familiar spell once again ?
That's a #dnd-rules question
Not sure where else to ask but... can someone explain average dpr for calculating cr? I know it says to average the maximum damage over three rounds but how exactly do I do that? I'm absolutely horrible at math and english is my second language, so I'm really confused 🥲
My thought was to take the average ×3 but that seems ... weird? Y'know, like 3 (1d4+1) × 3
Sounds like you want #optimization which focuses on numbers and how to make the numbers higher. Be warned it’s very white-room theorizing and highly opinionated number crunching.
Or a homebrew question as this is about CR of a monster right?
If a monster's damage output varies from round to round, calculate its damage output each round for the first three rounds of combat, and take the average. For example, a young white dragon has a multiattack routine (one bite attack and two claw attacks) that deals an average of 37 damage each round, as well as a breath weapon that deals 45 damage, or 90 if it hits two targets (and it probably will). In the first three rounds of combat, the dragon will probably get to use its breath weapon once and its multiattack routine twice, so its average damage output for the first three rounds would be (90 + 37 + 37) ÷ 3, or 54 damage (rounded down).
This complicated thing.
Some notes- the average listed for monsters is often rounded down. 1d4+1 (3) is actually 3.5. So two of them would be 7, not 6. Although that's a minor thing.
And well beyond the scope of this channel, #homebrew is the place like Elgate pointed out
I mean, I'm not exactly looking for someone to do the math for me (or optimization, not sure how that even relates to my question^^), I'm looking for a simple explanation
Yeah, which would fall under #homebrew
This channel is for the basics, and homebrew (especially calculating CR) is not the basics

if you v can help me plz dm me
Sorry, I’ve no experience with that content. Does it work with the step-by-step character creator you can find in the basic rules?
I am to sure tbh
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
Here’s where I recommend you start, then. I don’t know about your one piece book, but it’s likely got content that’s designed to pair with these instructions
@lyric wyvern This channel is for the basics of D&D. Homebrew is very much not the basics, which this sounds like
You probably want to ask the creator of this "One Piece PHB for 5e"
okay ty

Hiiii ppls. I’ve been wanting to learn how to play this game for a longgg timeee. If there’s a online version? Pls dm me if you can help me learn and whanot
I recommend the YouTube playlist, and the step-by-step character creator in the basic rules.
Don’t try or even think you need to read the entire book. Focus on a class and race you want, the rules on combat, and spell casting if you wanna sling spells. Then just reference the book as questions come up.
@dapper gulch tysm I would love someone to aslo dm me! I’d prefer online sesne I sadly don’t have anyone irl I can play with. If an online verison exists
Ok. Tysm :))
Ah! I keep my DMs private for my own reasons, but I’m happy to help out here in the public channels.
Ooooo awesome! Let’s talk then. Can you now? Or later?
Sure. What questions do you have? The more specific your ask the better the answer you’ll likely get.
I’ll try my best with that! I’m no good, I’ll give it my best shot tho
Okkk sooo.. does a online Version of dnd exist? Does that make sense?
D&D can be played online for sure! There’s no general “lobby” that people can queue up for a game, tho. You generally need to either be a dungeon master and recruit players (fastest) or look for a dungeon master recruiting players (slower).
Whoooo. Oh ok…… I’d be willing to wait tho for sure!!
Generally people play using a virtual tabletop like owlbear.rodeo, foundry, or roll20, and then they use a voice chat system like discord.
Oooooo ok! I couldn’t do the v-c would that really take an affect?…… a bad turn?
If you can’t use your voice for whatever reason then you can also type out what you and your character can do. Tho most games that use voice chat prefer everyone does it.
That said, there’s also text-only style games referred to as “play by post” or “pbp” for short.
Type out ok. I bet ppl will hopefully be understanding on that part (of typing it instead)yesss pbp is what I need
What exactly do I do to get into the pbp?
Yeah I’m in a pbp game as well. They tend to go slower, but they’re almost always going at a slow rate.
Oh my gosh ok, ok. Slow would be my cup of tea ☕️
Heya, i want to start playing dnd with 2 of my friends but noone wants to be a dm so i was wondering, are there any sites/apps where we could play without DM? Like Ai would be a dm or somethin i dunno
You’d want to use the LFG channels here and search for games in #looking-for-players or #looking-for-community , but you’d be specifically looking for games that mention play by post.
Nope. There’s no tool out there that can replace a DM.
damn, thats bad
The human mind is a tough thing to copy.
