The best way to learn is by playing, the hardest part is to find others to play with but once you do I'm sure your fellow players/DM will be happy to show you the rope so long as you are open to learn (which it sounds like you are 🙂 )

echo kelp
#

Well I recommend spending some time getting familiar with the rules (see https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules), then maybe watching a few games (see YouTube or Twitch for liveplay games), then try your hand at building a character (to see how the game rules work as far as characters go).
Then find a group to play with.

There are plenty of websites online to find games: reddit r/lfg, roll20 lfg search has a checkbox "games that welcome new players", fantasygrounds forums has an LFG section, dbdbeyond forums, crawlr, tabletopwizard, etc. There are many other discord servers to find games in too: r/lfg discord, dbdbeyond discord (you are here), altrole, critical role, the tavern, adventurers league hub, etc. ALSO consider a paid game (eg: on [startplaying dot games] site search for "beginners welcome"), the quality of paid games is usually worth it.

Finding a local game is sometimes the surest way to get into a game. Check libraries, colleges, and game stores, also try searching facebook and other online spaces for local groups (eg: "Chicago D&D").

Or, considering there are FAR more players than DMs (Dungeon Masters) out there, you might try gathering some players looking to play and try your hand at DM-ing, there are a lot of DMs here willing to help/advise/tutor new DMs. And the Lost Mines of Phandelver adventure is easy to run and free online

# burnt sandal Heya! Is there any groups that are just open for new players? I’m honestly prett...

I'm a DM, and I've not exactly got a group to join, but I've kinda been slowly looking for new players, not for creating a group, but more like teaching them the ropes. That being the whole reason im not posting in looking for players really. now if i were to get a few new players set up I might actually consider DMing for them. If you wanna learn to create a character and get a better grip on game mechanics you're free to message me.
Reason for me doing this because I absolutely lucked out getting into D&D with finding a group and I'd like to pay that luck forward.

The DMG has some of the info you want, and the Basic Rules contains some info for how to actually run the game. There are plenty of guides online as well: Google “Running the Game” by Matt Colville (YouTube), Sly Flourish’s Lazy DM site/book, the Angry GM, and the Alexandrian’s Gamemastery 101. Is DnD Beyond worth the subscription? I already own some of the books in hard copy and am not liking the idea of having to buy the digital version to use them.

frigid helm
#

IMO not really

crude musk
#

It depends on which subscription you're looking at and what you plan on using D&D Beyond for

crude musk
#

Neither subscription grants you direct access to content

frigid helm
#

If you already own the books, buying them again can get expensive quickly, and then you have to pay monthly to share them with other people.

keen mica
#

Was looking at the master level so I can share stuff for our campaign (wife and kids basically).

keen mica
strange acorn
crude musk
#

The content sharing option won't grant you access to content, it will just let you share what you and your players own within a campaign

simple goblet
#

You can homebrew the stuff in your books into DDB's systems so you can use them in the character builder

keen mica
crude musk
#

I think they meant "you should be fine without a subscription if you only own the books physically"

keen mica
#

Ahh makes sense.

strange acorn
#

yeah

keen mica
#

Currently using MPMB(?) character sheets but that gets tedious

mortal garden
#

D&D Beyond's subscription is worth it for me and my groups - because we use content sharing a ton.

simple goblet
#

My players are quite spread out so I can't just share a physical book with them

keen mica
#

$50ish a year isn't bad, but buying all the content again is pushing $1k. And this is just for our little family campaign.

mortal garden
#

Agreed. The "double buying" is pretty painful (buying a physical for myself and a digital copy to share). 😩

keen mica
#

So I could recreate certain things beyond the SRD as homebrew?

simple goblet
keen mica
#

Would I have to call it "the hand of Becna" or something?

simple goblet
#

I don't believe so for personal/private homebrew

#

You can also buy individual options piecemeal for $2 on the marketplace if there is a single thing you want instead of buying the whole book

strange acorn
keen mica
#

We have our own entire campaign setting so I guess that saves money too.

mortal garden
#

For what it's worth, I got lucky because I won a Legendary Bundle in a contest - and that might be the main reason why I'm able to upkeep my D&DB library (i.e. I didn't have to drop $1000 in one go).

Thanks though, this has been helpful. I've spent $50 on way dumber things, and now that the whole OGL thing is cleared up I don't feel bad about it.

Plus, if they pull that nonsense again then I can join in in canceling my account too.

this might be silly, but is there a service to play d&d online with people?

undone mantle
#

I think so

smoky adder
#

There's lots of ways to play online.

#

And different services do different things.

#

What exactly are you looking for?

gaunt roost
#

Just some way to play dnd that doesnt require me to go somewhere to play

smoky adder
#

The only thing you need online is a way to communicate with the rest of your group.

fiery cobalt
#

Zoom.

smoky adder
#

You could do that here on Discord or Zoom or whatever.

#

Then there's tons of ways to customize the experience. What you should use ultimately depends on what works for you and your group.

#

Digital character sheets, digital dice, digital maps.

#

Plenty of options for all of those and more.

gaunt roost
#

yeah ig i never thought pf it like that

smoky adder
#

My online groups are all text-based here on Discord, using D&D Beyond and Avrae.

#

Occasionally we'll use Roll20 or Owlbear Rodeo for maps, depending on the group. (I definitely prefer Owlbear.)

golden mango
#

Hello everyone I was wondering for CoS what would be a good map resource i was looking at Roll 20 and wondering if anyone has any tips or other resources that may be better?

cobalt frigate
#

You want to create new maps? Why not use the ones that are provided? I'm assuming you bought the adventure from either Roll20 or D&D Beyond...

golden mango
#

I have the D&D beyond book I am more so trying to see what would be the best map guide we are sorta a newer party forming and trying to figure out the best approach

cobalt frigate
#

What do you mean by "map guide"?

#

You're the DM?

#

Sorry I'm trying understand the issue you're having.

golden mango
#

Yeah, one of my friends said map management for DMing this campaign can be difficult in particular during the castle sequence. I was curious if Roll 20 as a map resource with the original maps would help keep things organized while helping my players not see spoilers

cobalt frigate
#

So if you own CoS on D&D Beyond you can save the players' maps and then upload it to Roll20 (or whatever your VTT you're using).

sudden otter
#

Roll20s maps are pretty darn solid from what I'd seen.

sudden otter
cobalt frigate
#

VTTs have fog of war so the PCs can only see as far as they can see and not the entire map.

golden mango
#

OK awesome are they user friendly?

cobalt frigate
#

owlbear.rodeo is suppose to be more user friendly than Roll20.

cobalt frigate
sudden otter
#

If I don't own it but a friend owns it and it's shared with me

#

Would I still be able to download the maps

cobalt frigate
#

I share my digital source books with my players but not the adventures.

sudden otter
#

Yeah again that's a given in my scenario, just asking if all the shared stuff can be downloaded too

#

On mobile now or I'd hop on and give it a try

crude musk
#

The person with the content, the person who enables content sharing, and the DM who controls what compendium content is shared don't need to be the same person

cobalt frigate
#

You have to read the D&D Beyond ToS in regards to downloading.

crude musk
#

Downloading maps for personal use is within the terms of service. You just cannot distribute them

sudden otter
crude musk
#

It's authorised distribution

sudden otter
#

Ok, good

cobalt frigate
#

It's like lending out your physical books.

sudden otter
#

Not intending to go spreading it further but wanted to know where the line was

cobalt frigate
#

However, it's only with people in that campaign. You can't use the "borrowed" digital source books to create a new character in a different campaign with a different DM.

crude musk
#

It'd be very odd for the official means of sharing content on the official digital platform for D&D was against that platforms own terms of service dndLol

sudden otter
#

Yeah!

golden mango
#

So I guess my main question is is it better to use roll 20 and digital maps for it all, with creatures and its features for players or to use physical maps when I do not have any tokens or anything in particular like that besides the printable maps?

sudden otter
cobalt frigate
sudden otter
cobalt frigate
golden mango
#

ok thx

sudden otter
#

I find digital maps easier to manage but Id prefer to play in person on a map

golden mango
#

I am playing in person at a game store

cobalt frigate
#

Okay, why not use graph paper or a white board to draw the maps out there? Using Roll20 means you'll need a monitor or a projector.

golden mango
#

The store uses a tv in the dnd room for ambience and its my first time in a while dming so I wasnt sure of what may make it easier

cobalt frigate
#

Well, if you never used Roll20 before it'll be more of a learning curve

#

(I'm not a fan of Roll20 myself)

#

The one advantage of VTTs over in person maps is the line of sight / fog of war

golden mango
#

Yeah it was one of the reasons I was thinking it was for the "unexpected" feeling but also because with printed maps I was curious if it gives too much away

cobalt frigate
#

Um, don't show the printed maps. Hand draw what parts of the PCs will see.

#

Use graph paper or a white board.

#

That's the old school way.

golden mango
#

Fair I was thinking that too just bouncing between the two

cobalt frigate
#

That's up to you. But IMO that seems a lot more work than necessary to be hybrid.

golden mango
#

yeah I am trying to make it a reasonable but fun game and just dont want to disappoint my players

austere juniper
#

I am late to the discussion, but have you DMed before, and what Module do you want to run?

#

AH i see curse of strahd

cobalt frigate

austere juniper
#

Yeah i understand, still I think with its more complexe structure it is not an easy one to run

Each class has a hit die (1d6, 1d8, 1d10, or 1d12). Figure out your class's hit die. At level one you take the max of that die (so if using a 1d10, you'd have a 10) and add your constitution modifier to it. So if your constitution attribute was a 12, you'd have a constitution modifier of +1. So then you'd take 10 and the +1 to it, and have a starting hitpoint pool total of 11.

When you score a critical hit, you get to roll extra dice for the attack's damage against the target. Roll all of the attack's damage dice twice and add them together. Then add any relevant modifiers as normal. To speed up play, you can roll all the damage dice at once.

For example, if you score a critical hit with a dagger, roll 2d4 for the damage, rather than 1d4, and then add your relevant ability modifier. If the attack involves other damage dice, such as from the rogue's Sneak Attack feature, you roll those dice twice as well.

I just see a short content about dnd meme

cobalt frigate
#

There are many D&D shows (and I emphasize the word "shows") that have people playing D&D. The more popular ones are Critical Role and Dimension 20 — the DM and cast are mostly professional actors and the shows have high production value so they do not represent the typical D&D game session.

The world of dnd is bigger than I thought

There are plenty of "amateur" actual play streams/shows that probably are a better represent what real sessions are like — unpolished. 😉

Hi all! New to DnD but I just finished creating my first character.

dusky helm
#

hey uhh

#

what does hit/dc do

mortal garden
#

I think I need a bit of context/an example to answer confidently but my knee jerk answer is:

Hit is the bonus you add to the d20 when making an attack. Sometimes people refer to this as the “to hit” roll. You compare it to the target’s AC; if you meet or beat that number, it’s a successful hit!

DC is the “difficulty class” of a check. It’s the number you need to meet or beat in order to succeed on some kind of challenge. This DC number is decided by the DM.

Fog cloud is great if you need to escape, thunderwave can also be good at causing damage and pushing enemies away from you (although it will absolutely ruin any stealth missions)

mortal garden

If you check under the spellcasting section of your class, it should show you. For example, if you look under Sorcerer it says:

Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Charisma modifier

It'll be slightly different for different casters.

harsh fjord
lyric fjord
#

hey heard about DND for years always looked interesting what should i expect from it?

smoky adder
#

At its simplest, D&D is just you and your friends telling a story together.

#

One person acts as the Dungeon Master, or DM. They control the world, adjudicate the rules, and presents challenges for the others to face.

#

The others, the Players, each take the role of a single character in that world, each with their own unique story and abilities.

#

When the players want to try to accomplish a task, they’ll typically roll dice to see whether they succeed. Pass or fail, it then shapes the next part of the story.

crude musk
urban shoal
#

any other tips for a new DM?

#

also, im guessing yes, but is it posible to take the story further then the pre-written campaign, you know go from pre written to my own adventures and Quests

harsh fjord
#

It is definitely possible; it just takes a bit of finesse.

#

As for tips:

  • Try to engage all the players, even if it's a just "What is your character up to?" Be wary, however. Some are perfectly happy being audience members.
  • Don't solve problem players with in-game solutions.
  • Don't try to avoid failure. That's impossible. Instead learn from it.
  • Plan something but not everything. You'll figure out your own sense of doing enough/too much over time.
  • Realize you'll get curveballs all the time so be ready to improv.
  • Don't see the game as a DM-versus-players scenario. Be a fan of the players. Try to present them with settings that let them be heroic/cool/whatever they're hoping to be in-game.
  • Communicate. The game relies on it, and that goes for out-of-game stuff as well as in-game. In particular, communicate about everyone's expectations so that all have a good time.
  • Don’t try to absorb all the info at once so you’re ready. That’s like trying to learn all the baseball rules before ever picking up a bat. Know the basics, start playing, and the rest will come with time and practice.
urban shoal
#

thank you so much :)) im very exited to start playing and come here with a lot more questions 😉

When creating a character, do I roll for my stats?

Most DMs want to witness rolling because it's very easy to cheat. "Yeah, I rolled six 18s!"

off the top of my head, melee weapons with the finesse property are daggers, shortswords, scimitars, and rapiers

fiery cobalt

I’m looking for the list in the phb.

cobalt frigate
fiery cobalt

melee weapons with the finesse property? yeah, they're a little far and few between

fiery cobalt

Yeah, also how are there no katana?
Lemme check the dmg really quickly.

foggy saffron
#

most often i see people reflavor longswords to make a katana

fiery cobalt
#

Although that’s what it says in the dmg,I think a katana would be a finesse weapon as they are rather smalller than a longsword.

foggy saffron
#

realistically that's a valid point, but from a game design standpoint, giving too many high-damage weapons the finesse property might weaken the role of strength in weapons

I’d probably use katana as reskined scimitar or rapiers.

So pedantically, clerics don’t have “known” spells. They prepare a number of spells from the Cleric spell list and can change them every time they take a long rest.

The actual number of spells they can prepare depends on the cleric, as shown above.

How does unearthed arcana work?
Working on my monk, would like to make him a 17/3 ranger (primeval guardian to turn into a tree), but am not sure how UA works.

UA is just playtest content

So you would need your dms permission to use playtest vs official content

sharp magnet
echo kelp

So.. let's clarify that. A natural 20 on an attack roll is an automatic hit regardless of anything else (unless some special feature nullifies it).
A natural 1 on an attack roll is an automatic miss regardless of anything else (unless some special feature nullifies this).
Nat 20s and nat 1s on skill and ability checks mean nothing other than that's what you rolled, add your modifiers and bonuses and that's it. There is no auto success/auto fail with skill and ability checks.

Hello everyone, pretty new to DnD and the discord, I'll get familiar with the game rules before joining, but as I do so I was wondering if there is any way to seek a DM as being a small group of players (we are two so far). As a general rule, you'd reach out to the DM as they're typically the primary person doing the scheduling etc. Exceptions exist but that's probably the best way to start.

If you're applying to a LFG post or something, there might be more instructions on how to apply/contact the group - so just keep an eye on that.

Basically you could post an ad in #750812887697588356 mentioning that there’s several of you who want to be part of a game. Alternatively, you could skim #looking-for-players and reach out to any poster saying you’re a set of folks looking to play. That kind of transparency would apply no matter how you look for games.
