ah i see
There's a bit of a learning curve but the basic idea of the game is pretty simple. And there's lots of resources to help.
If you can get into the idea of telling a story together at the table with some friends, playing out the role of a character you create, and, whenever your character does something risky, rolling a twenty-sided die to see whether they succeed...
The rest is just extra stuff to help you do that lol
Gotcha. Thanks peeps :)
No prob, you can ask here if you have questions
What wizards are exactly profecient at?
When you're going through the class features of the wizard you should see under the Proficiencies subheading something like this:
Skills: Choose two from Arcana, History, Insight, Investigation, Medicine, and Religion
These are the skills a wizard can choose to be proficient at, you can read more about them here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/using-ability-scores#Skills. You also get a few more proficiencies from your background and some races get them as racial traits.

Hello
How are you?
funnily enough i decided to dm for me and my family's collective first go at D&D so i've got the three main books and it's just so much information to have thrown at you
I highly recommend you check out Critical Role's "Handbook Helper" video tutorial series on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD-LWHhiseE&list=PL1tiwbzkOjQyr6-gqJ8r29j_rJkR49uDN&index=1
raaaaaah this looks so comprehensive tysm
The Lost Mine of Phandelver used to be part of the original Starter Set but now it's free with all D&D Beyond accounts. It was written for new players and DMs in mind.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
that's probably a good idea to start off with because i was otherwise homebrewing everything w no idea where to start
There are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to RPG, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
Youtuber How to RPG has a video series on running Lost Mine of Phandelver.

oh my goodness
D&D has been around for almost 50 years, it's got a following
It has a lot of rules. That said 5E (5th Edition) is probably the most accessible edition.
Can I get a "for dummies" explanation of Armor class?
It's the number that an attack roll must be equal to or higher than for an attack to hit
Oh, ok.
It's determined by what armor you're wearing. If you're not wearing any armor, it's 10 + your dexterity modifier
Some classes, subclasses, and races give you other ways of calculating it
Thank you.
at what age do yall think i should indoctrinate my little sister into ttrpgs? shes 2 atm
You probably want #non-dnd-topics
This channel is for newcomers to get help getting started with D&D
ur probably right, i was counting the bub as a newcomer, lol
When in a spell attack it says that, for example, the target suffer "5 (1d4) damage", what does that mean?
the number in the brackets is what you roll, the number before it is the average (rounded down) of that roll to save time
So your above example doesn't work for 1d4 as the average of that is 2.5, not 5
But 5 (2d4) would work and would mean "you can either roll two four-sided dice and add the result together, or save time with the average result of 5"
Oh alright, thank you so much, as i was confused about it i didn't know how to present an example
Another question, how do focus artifacts work? Can they be really anything as long as it's related to the class/background or are there specific items for it?
Specific classes use specific types of foci, but there is some overlap
Could you elaborate a little further?
wizards can only use wands, staffs, rods, or orbs, but druids can also use staffs, in addition to other types of foci
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/equipment#AdventuringGear Check out Arcane Focus, Druidic Focus, and Holy Symbol
I'll do, thank you so much

hello
How would I make a character? I have a race and class Id like to use, but don’t know the process
Do you have the dndbeyond app
Thinking of a half-orc barbarian
The rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters
You can also follow videos walking you through the steps, like this one from WASD20: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcNgj0KPYuA
I have the players handbook, but I’m not reading through nearly 100 pages of races and classes
Get the app it’s got a set by step guide on it
Hi , this is more of like a story building question then mechanic but how in depth of lore can I get into with my character before it interferes with a DMs story ? Ex: my dude is from a escaped cult and I wanted to know if I have to choose a cult from DND or if I can make my own..?
That's something you can and should work out with the DM. Some DMs want players to participate in the world-building (whether the setting is canon or invented by the DM) and will slot whatever the player creates into the world. Others ask players to use the existing lore, whatever that may be.
Thank you !!
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQMqiULo_05P90SzHdyyVIcz4TGZApQ5L first few videos should help
Most chill DMS from what I know, would let you make your own. As long as it shouldn't interfere with the overarching story too much.
@harsh fjord hey went to that adventure league game last night was really fun just wanted to say thanks again for helping me find it
Already am. Only for the class and race I am choosing.
I'm making a master interrogator holy crap lol, my race comes with intimidation right off the bat, plus the class comes with 2 other proficiencies I can choose from (chose athletics and perception).
Hello!! Im kind of new to the D&D thingy and never actually had a game before. I've always been excited to try a game out with my friend but every time we try, stuff dont get as well and i actually wanna learn all basics and everything, i sometimes do searching it up but i end up in a loop hole of confusuon and not quite knowing where i actually am. So i just wanna learn how to play D&D so i can be part of its community and to be able to play with other people
@tardy moth Buy the Player's Handbook, that's what I'm using.
Is there somewhere specific where i can get the book? +I dont plan on playing it irl because the game isnt famous in my country, is it still usefull if im planning to only play it online?

Thank you very much!
Also the videos help. You're totally welcome!
It includes all the rules, plus classes, and races, spells etc. I'd say it is.
Hi I was just making my first character and Im not sure what level I should start him as
ah ok thanks
is there a place I can put the sheet I made for someone to look at and tell me if I need to change anything?
ah thanks
All right, so for warlocks, does it always have to be a God that lends them power ? Like can it be a demon posesión thing as well were a demon can lend them the power in return for a host or is it just strictly saved for the Divine ? Pls lmk if I’m making sense I have a hard time formatting things 😅
That's up to the DM. Here's an excerpt from the class description:
A warlock is defined by a pact with an otherworldly being. Sometimes the relationship between warlock and patron is like that of a cleric and a deity, though the beings that serve as patrons for warlocks are not gods. A warlock might lead a cult dedicated to a demon prince, an archdevil, or an utterly alien entity—beings not typically served by clerics. More often, though, the arrangement is similar to that between a master and an apprentice. The warlock learns and grows in power, at the cost of occasional services performed on the patron’s behalf.
Warlocks don't get their powers from deities but from other outworldly powers like archdevils, demon lords, genies, etc. This is where each of the warlock sub-classes' powers are derived from — their patrons.
Per the rules, it's actually NOT a god. But it can be whatever you and your DM work out.
Ok !! Thank you guys
Pact of the Fiend is literally a demon or devil
Pact of the Archfey is a powerful fey (fairy)
Most pacts really aren't intended to be with gods at all, but with other powerful beings.
What is the most distinctive thing (feature?) about each class?
OK gotcha I was getting a little confused with the differences of the gods and the powerful beings
It's understandable
Gods have worshippers, who through their belief and faith empower the gods.
Other powerful beings like archdevils and demon lords are not as powerful as gods and don't normally have worshippers (but some have cultists).
Hey newcomers, im running a newbie friendly campaign and just had a player flake out on me, if you would like to join we are only level 3 running icewind dale!
Thank you sm omg you have no idea how hard I was struggling trying to find the difference between them
It does make me a little curious is there a chance that these other powerful beings have a chance to ‘upgrade’ to the gods with enough followers or no?
To the beings that actually have followers like in a cult ??
You can ask in #dnd-lore as there have been cases in the past where some demon lords have tried to attain godhood.
Oh ok ! Thank you
you gotta be scared of the players that try to attain godhood...
The rule of thumb is that only gods (who have divine rank, such as demi-gods, lesser gods, and greater gods) can grant cleric spells.
I would love. to join but I have work in like a hour and I was just told I don’t any days off for the week 🙃
thats okay np
It's a bit less spelled out in 5e regarding which powerful beings can grant spells to clerics. It was very clearcut in some earlier editions.
Gods aren't really bound by a lot of mechanics in 5e at all
hey peeps, looking to get started and hopefully try out a game with some chill peeps

Hi guys, im new to the game, but have already had my first round. However my club only meets one per week for 1-1.5h and im wanting to play more. Is anyone hosting a game with/for newbies on Sunday NZ time?

I understand that this is a very long shot question. But would a DM be willing to walk a newbie such as myself through a very short encounter with a character simply for the sake of learning mechanics. That being either a basic RP session with a goal in mind or perhaps a small combat encounter. I admittedly dont know how much work setting a small scene would take, but ive been curious as to if anyone has the wherewithal to do something like that. or if its more trial by fire?
I would normally not mind taking 30-60 minutes to run a little encounter for you just to teach some basic mechanics, but right now I'm afraid I just don't have the spoons. If you don't mind giving me a day or two we could set something up
Can I join?
Just to make things clear I don't have time to run another game, but I don't mind doing a short encounter to teach some basic mechanics 🙂
I have time right now. Up for a tutorial? @thin grove @scenic drift @burnt lintel @iron moat
I'm taking a lvl 6 warlock to a buddies 1 - shot this Saturday night and as much as he wont mind if i show up completely oblivious as to what's going on, for the sake of making the most of the 1 - shot i figured that having some basic concepts under my belt before hand would be helpful. I very much appreciate your willingness to quickly throw your hat in, but I also don't want to put you in a position to scramble between now and then to make it happen.
that would be fantastic
Yes please.
awesome 🙂 I normally wouldn't mind but my cat passed yesterday and I'm not in the best space.
You folks have fun!
Wow sorry to hear that man, I feel for you.
Ah, I'm so sorry to hear that. Thank you very much none the less.
So sorry for your loss.
Sorry for your loss
Any newcomers who want to hop in right now DM me, we'll begin in a few minutes.
No worries everyone 🙂 You have a good time
Im not jumping in but I think it’s incredibly gracious of you to hop in a big server like this and do that, compared to how certain people treat those new to the game in this discord.
I absolutly agree with this statement. It's difficult to get your feet on the ground in a game this technical with such little opportunity to actually practice in any sense. Its very generous.
Got 2 in, last chance to hop in to a tutorial session. 🙂
is this still open 😄

Hello! My name is Justin and I wanted some advice. I'm a new comer wanting to learn more about the game, I have a character in mind that I want to build but so far I've only flushed out his race, background and class. I unfortunately don't have an idea how to build his stats.
thank you!
If you don’t have a DM yet, I’d suggest sticking with standard array or point buy for now.
For my first time do you recommend a pay to play game or should I just find a random group? I assume that for my first time that I'd like the DM to be professional and understanding to new comers like myself, being a first timer my biggest fear is that I might interrupt the flow of the game.
You can get lucky/unlucky either way. Finding a good group where folks are on the same page is more important than whether it's free or paid.
both can be good. Both have their ups and downs. The advantage of a p2p group really is that with money being spent people tend to be more invested in making the game happen
The disadvantage of course is...well...it costs you and that cost can really build up
I've had some success with pickup groups. My Wednesday group was all strangers and they're a couple of sessions in and getting along mostly fine
But you do have to be careful and watch for red flags
red flags being?
Metagaming, that guy, rules lawyering, etc
Those vary. I think basic agreement on respect and communication are fundamental.
they'll be a bit different depending on your personal issues and tolerance levels. They can include:
-People who get really creepy with the DM or others players.
-People who just want to use the game to act out their disturbing fantasies (cannibalism, murdering kids, etc.)
-People who try to make the entire game about them.
-People who will be unreliable and not show up to game (without reason or notice) or refuse to participate.
-People who try to sow discord or dissent out of character, causing drama.
-People who want to rob or kill other party members.
Those are some of the more common ones
At least for me
I appreciate all this advice guys! I've been kinda scratching my head in the whole joining games part and speaking with an actual DM. I mean, I can find all the rules and specifics online but I'm still having trouble finding public groups and people who want to play online with. And If I do pay to play, I'm worried about the process. Camp dragon a recent site that I join is expensive, and I don't even know if I'm allowed to play a certain race because I haven't purchased it yet. (Tabaxi)
This is the channel to help you get yourself oriented!
Thanks! I really do need the help. lol

What spells and cantrips should a level 5 Druid take?
I want to focus on support and heals mostly
dnd beyond gives every spell and its description, right there in character build sheet.
Recently getting back into D&D, I have the Player’s/DM handbooks, and I just bought the Essentials Kit and want to run through its campaign. However, the rulebook of the kit only has half the races and classes, and one of my players wants to try something from the Player’s Handbook. I’m going to let him because that’s what D&D has always been about, breaking the rules, but are there any issues that could arise? Break the game even?

any tips?
I might be late to this group but thank you for making it i am trying to find little motivation why my Slivanesti Nuitari Socerer would want to go to war for dragon lance campaign obvi but never played it so... thoughts?

Those are where you'll find games to join.
Yep, already looking through them and keeping our eyes out! 🙂
Huge thank you! 🙏
Also looking for a campaign during the weekdays if it fits my schedule
Im kinda dumb but what are pathfinders?
Pathfinder is another TTRPG.
It's not a 3rd party, it's an entirely different game
oh i thought its a thing in dnd
Nope.
(Third party means something made to be used with D&D, but published by a company other than Wizards of the Coast)
I stand corrected.
Paizo used to publish the Dragons and Dungeon Magazines (under license from WotC) ages ago.
No, they're different game systems
Interesting
They share a common root, but they've diverged
If you want to discuss non-D&D roleplaying games, #non-dnd-topics is the best place to go
Yo i need help choosing a mat but cant decide on one
Mat??
The grid thing u put on a table
Ah ok, depends on your budget but wrapping paper in the uk has a grid on the back, chess boards give you a 40ft by 40ft battle map, you can buy books of battle maps like Loke BattleMats Big Book Of Battle Mats Vol. 2 (Size A4) https://amzn.eu/d/1p9taQA
I was looking at maybe https://a.co/d/aAkJjXw
Or https://a.co/d/3cm4J0v
I want something big that i can just draw on and make my own stuff so i wanted to know if anyone had experience with these or something similar but ill look at the one u sent, it looks cool
The first one looks good might get some of them myself, I’ll got a a3 laminate pouch I’ve drawn a grid on that I can slide maps inside of
Cool tyty
Hey, i’m new to dnd, thought joining the discord server would be a good start as i hardly know anything abt the game
Always a good place to start :)
Hi yall, i am also new to dnd
Hello :)
There’s a lot of good channels in this server to help new players get into D&D for the first time
Question, are there any rules i need to learn before going into any campaign or such?
You should always have an idea of what your character can do, and probably read up on the rules for skills and combat
i am tempted to pick bard as a class tbh, for uhh..reasons
Bard is a fine class. Tho if your reasons are for the meme of it you’ll want to make sure the table you play at is okay with it.
I love bard but too many people think bards are sleeping with everyone because 'haha charisma means I'm handsome'
They aren't wrong
They are, it's a toxic stereotype about how to play the class "right" that leads to a lot of disruptive behaviour
Hi
hi
how do i submit a quest for a dungeon master?
they are. For one thing, Charisma doesn't actually mean physical attractiveness. Several hideous creatures in D&D have quite high charisma.
Charisma is more force of personality/willpower or some combination of the two. There really is no 'attractiveness' stat
Sybriex says “glglglglglglglglgblrrrrrgggh.”
Sybriex being a freakishly ugly, but also freakishly charismatic fiend
Its strangely compelling for a floating blob of terrifying goop.
Hello me and my friends wanted to try dnd and i'm gonna be the dm, but this is my first time playing, and theirs as well, and i don't know which campaign i should choose, are there any anyone can recommend and should we play on roll20 or where?
Lost Mines of Phandelver is free online and a good introductory adventure
You can find that adventure on DnDBeyond but I think it’s also available on Roll20.
thanks and are there any good tutorials or guides for playing and being a dm
Check the pinned message here on the channel - lots of useful links to help get you started.
tysm
My mom says I’ve got high charisma 😁
Dungeon dudes on YouTube have some great guides for newcomers and DMs
a crap guide to dnd series by JoCat
his video helped me alot on making a character sheet
does anyone know good roll 20 tutorials
How good is the rogue class?
It’s a fine class that plays to its role fairly well.
But what’s good depends on context and use - and I think the most important context is having fun!
All classes are great depending on how you play them
I just saw that on roll20 there is Explorer's Guide to Wildemount adventure preview with maps and monsters so should i try that with friends or try the lost mines
Lost Mines is new player/DM oriented so I’d lean towards that
LMoP is also free on DDB.
ok i will try to set that up
how do i post in #looking-for-players because i can't type in there
Head to #find-a-game, you'll find instructions there
lol im kinda stupid, thank you
I really enjoy rogues honestly
Me, trying out a rogue: 😄
Itd be funny to make a Sibirex npc thats just a normal guy
Like hes just some surfer dude-bro
But he a weird meat sphere with chains ofc
I can hardly tell what side is d20 and what is a good roll
A d20 has 20 sides, numbered 1 through 20. Generally higher rolls are better. On an attack roll, a natural 20 roll is known as a critical hit and allows you to roll the damage dice twice and then add it all together plus any modifiers and bonuses.
A critical hit automatically hits regardless of armor class.
So any extras I have on will be added to my roll because I can’t read it as of rn like for example when it rolls I see multiple triangles
Let’s say right now I’m looking at a 3
But then I also see a 16 19 and a 17
On the one connecting sides
So a 3 and that means a bad roll and so I have to add in my modifiers to make it better
Okay I’ll read more on my players book because I also have that other dice that goes to 90
There is a 90 soded dice??
Oh yeah i have one of them
I lost the lower percentile dice but the guy at the nerd cafe i was at gave me his spare one
He was really cool
Although now my dice dont match but its alr
Yeah ik arent they more as a joke
Like a bit of a gag christmas present
Ive not played yet
Yeah like the chonk dice that the website critical kit sell
Yeah it came with one my d20 introduction box along with a map and books and kit
So I have the monster dungeon and players guide along with what I bought essential kit from Christmas also I happen to bought the rwby combat ready box and figurines sadly one of the figurines head broke off so I have to buy plastic glue to fix it which is wonderful
Im completely new to dnd, where should i start to learn to play or overall learn therules?

Welcome to the community!
I'm gonna be running my first group through the campaign in the essentials starter kit. Is it absolutely necessary for me to have the DMs guidebook? Or can we make it through with just the players handbook.
Hello 😃 I’m extremely new to dnd, so much so that I’ve never actually played before but am looking to get into it. Would love any and all advice, and if anyones willing to take me under their wing I’d be greatly appreciative.
Thank you. Thankfully, one of my players offered to purchase me a DM guidebook since I offered to DM it. So I think I'll be good now
Is it possible to play online somehow
lots of ways to play online
Great thanks guys
I just came on because over night I had trouble or time about thinking of hey what’s a d20 and how do you roll it
As a joke or for fun I bought the RWBY combat ready board game from rooster store which was also happen to be made by arcane wonders
But when I go back to college I plan on seeing if there is any dnd groups
Now I moved so it might make it easier for me to get a better path and or college
What are the most played PC levels?
My guess would be low levels are the most common. Lots of stuff that quickly fizzles out after a few sessions. There is some data somewhere that most campaigns end by level 10 or so too
Thank you.
Are there any decent websites for making sheets? I use dnd beyond but I dont wanna buy dlcs
Hello all ... I'm new to D&D 5e and looking for a group to join ... I haven't played 5e but I did play a lot of 2e and A2e
Beat me to it lol but same here as well although played 4e a tad and thats all
@random egret lol never got the chance to play 4e
played a lil 1 on 1 wit a bud of mine but that was really it and that wax forever ago
My guess: 3-6 by far the most, with 7-13 not too far behind, 1 & 2 common enough, and 17+ rarely
If you want I could try to find time to run you through all the mechanics the DMG has extra. But none of it is necessary, most are variants, and online tools help fill in the gaps, plus most of what's in there might not even fit the game style you are going for, plus half the fun of being DM is making up fun mechanics on the fly. 😋
Where can I/we find a group for online play ?

What does ac do? I know it's for defense but how do I like apply it during gameplay?
It's to see if the target is hit by an attack (melee, ranged, or certain magical). Roll a d20 for attack, that number has to equal or beat the AC number.

Finally, somewhere I can learn
Why is it so hard to find a game that isn't full of flakes and jerks. I thought online would be great but I think the online leads to even more problems. Sorry for the rant.
That's why I'm a DM. I get to kick out flakes and jerks out of my table (I haven't yet...).
I just started if there is any dms who need players pm me
I'm nearly finished making my first ever character I'm very proud
i just got done making mine and then i got on here to find people to play with
I should make a regular character instead of homebrew
I'm in a couple homebrew campaigns and the characters are broken
Hey, I literally just got into D&D and I have no idea what to do

It's my fault. I haven't played for 25 years and the game has just changed so much and there has been an influx of the wrong kind of people.
I thought it was a collaborative game. It used to be.
There are still plenty of folks you'd gel with, I'm sure, but the number of people you'd have to filter through is much larger.
Really also depends on who you get and what stage they are at. Since I mostly DM, if I get new people I can teach them how I DM a game and it usually runs pretty smoothly. If I get people who have had new DM's before me, a lot of them just kind of expect the game to go a certain way before we even start playing
There is also a HUGE DM shortage right now with most people wanting to play, tons of new people finding the game for the first time, but none of them really want to or feel they can DM a game. It leads to a lot of people looking and just trying to get into anything they can
Hi
Question
D&D 5e does allow what’s known as multiclassing which is taking levels of more than one class.
I'm just wondering can anyone's help me with creating a character I've been trying to read/watch a lot of things and they really aren't helping ;<;
I'm writing it down on paper btw
Where are you getting stuck?
I think mostly with like the stats of my character cause I don't have any books or anything I'm not sure exactly how to put it correctly
By “stats”, you mean your ability scores?
Yes (I think)
Strength, Dexterity, etc.?
Yea and the smaller things
There’s a few different ways to determine those, shown here.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
Which one you’ll use will probably depend on your DM.
If you don’t have a DM, I’d stick with the Standard Array for now.
Have you picked your class already?
Which class did you pick?
Because that will help guide which abilities you should prioritize.
Fighter
Nice 👍🏻
So the Quick Build for a Fighter says this:
First, make Strength or Dexterity your highest ability score, depending on whether you want to focus on melee weapons or on archery (or finesse weapons). Your next-highest score should be Constitution, or Intelligence if you plan to adopt the Eldritch Knight martial archetype.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/fighter#CreatingaFighter
(Not that you have to follow that, but it’s generally good advice.)
Kk thx!
But Eldritch Knight aside, you probably want STR, DEX, and CON as your highest.
The exact order kind of depends on how you want to fight.
Which weapons you’ll use, for example.
And then the other three scores you can assign in whatever order you like.
I'm gonna be honest I didn't think you were going to go so far in depth but it does help a lot so thank you! Lol
I’m new and want to know if a orc wizzard warrior is good

Hey I'm a newer player and I was just wondering some tips for dm
You can ask questions and advice about DMing in #dm-discussion
Ok thanks 👌
Is a personal backstory necessary? I'm having a hard time writing the lore for my character but I already made a story about how he would possibly end up in a campaign.
Do I use the commands in this channel?
Entirely depends on the campaign. Some DMs require backstories, others don't
You can start with basics - and rely on ur mechanical background to provide some context. But yeah it depends on ur DM.
#1075498333705089084
#ddb-avrae-commands
These two are for commands depending on what kind you need to use.
I usually just outline how they kinda lived before the campaign, no storyline just their lifestyle
I do short summary and flesh it out to fit world.
(Thing related to traits or ideal)
(Thing related to bond or ideal)
(General goal)
(Thing related to flaw)
Ie: grew up on a farm and married childhood sweetheart they passed from the plague, I search for a way to improve lives through medicine. The things I've seen have made me enamoured with alcohol.
Another useful thing to include in a backstory is some element that can be brought into the present day to further the story. For example, if your character was a thief, maybe they made an important enemy by stealing from a particularly vindictive person, or maybe they matched wits with a rival thief, or maybe they refused an invitation to a thieves' guild and the guild still wants to either recruit them or shut them down.
quick question what are trinkets for?

Trinkets don't have a special use, they're just neat random items you might have or find. You might talk with the DM and give them some extra significance, like if your trinket is say "a trophy from a hunt", it might be that your character used to be a monster slayer and they wear a tooth taken from their most impressive battle.
Is there any open new-by games coming out
Yep. They're like little prompts or bits of atmosphere.
I see a few games in #looking-for-players that say newbies are welcome that you could try
https://youtu.be/p3N3gv1dTr8 good video on backstories
Man, i love being cursed with a timezone that prevents me from joining most campaigns
If you need to avoid something bad happening, you roll a saving throw and add the corresponding score modifier (and your proficiency bonus if trained) and try to roll over the DC.
It works the same way with enemies. They have to roll over the DC with the bonus in their stat block
to add to that. if you force the enemy to make a saving throw, then their DC to beat is ususally decribed in the feature you are using. for example, if you cast a spell at an enemy with a save DC, then that DC determined by you class, spellcasting ability score and level. (noted as Spell Save DC on your sheet)
is there any player vs player combat system? i mean does the rules work as in a normal combat
5e isn't balanced for Player Vs Player combat
player vs player certainly works the same as normal combat vs monsters but as Lionn said, the game is not balanced for it
alright, thx
Hello, im very new to DnD (im interested because of VLDL's epic npc man DnD). I would love to look for any open DnD campaigns for newbie, where can i find those? (Sorry i think i've joined too many channel and now im confused)
Welcome! If you head over to #find-a-game, there’s instructions on how to find a game to join.
all 3
if it says V, S, M that's all three
so how does one go about creating characters and a "world" / environment for the d&d game while still keeping it d&d style
are there any guidelines or tips on this
ohhh thanks
The Dungeon Master’s Guidebook has a lot of information and tips on how to create your own homebrew worlds/campaigns.
I have a question concerning domestic and international times for a new server for DND players. Including the DM there are 6 people at the moment one is international and the rest are domestic those domestic have trouble due to having to work in the midday and the one international is having issues due to it being to early in the am for them what should the DM do?
attacks and spellcasting
how do you fill that in?
The DM is still a new DM so I fear that they are trying to take on too much at once
if time zones are not compatible and weekends dont work either then maybe the group doesnt work like this
I see so say eastern time zone in the US compared to Sweden's
Most of the players work the midday hour that the player in Sweden is requesting
So I'm guessing that means it won't work for the time being until the server grows?
I agree on that
what about weekends?
Fighter
level 1 I assume? what race?
Hii I'm a new dnd player trying to fit in w my boyfriend cuz he's so good and I'm garbage. I made the mistake of being a DM the first time I started so is there any tips for finding a campaign to join and how to play? Thanks! <3
ah so high elf or wood elf?
Uhhh good question
because of you are a wood elf, then we can ignore the spellcasting section of the sheet for now. just leave it blank. if you are a high elf, you get a cantrip and you need to read up on how that works
i looked at the races on dndbeyond 🥲

oh and if you click on elf on DDB, and then navigate to elf traits then it tells you about the different elfs
if i have 2 handaxes do i write them down as 1 weapon or 2 seperate ones
write two in your inventory but for the attack in the first page one is enough
since theres only 3 gray spaces then a bunch of lines do i only get 3 weapons?
and if so where does the shield go?
You can have multiple weapons, but the sheet only allows you to list three at a time in those spaces for quick reference. Shields add to your AC, so besides being listed in your equipment they don't have any special spot.

I had two more questions. Since I'm a dwarf shouldn't I be able to add the heavily armored feat to my character for free? Also, how does one receive the heavy armor master feat? The Player's Handbook states a proficiency with heavy armor, but my character has been wearing heavy armor with no penalty.
Variant humans do!
Except for variant human which gives one
Edit:was too slow
some classes get heavy armor prof like fighter or paladin
or some clerics
They don't get the Heavily Armoured feat but rather they are just proficient in Light and Medium Armour.
gotcha, thank you for the answers
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/races#MountainDwarf
Dwarven Armor Training. You have proficiency with light and medium armor.
Some classes/sub-classes give the Heavy Armour proficiency, such as fighters and war domain clerics.
Hey everyone
We'll start a campaign soon, and we're fairly new to the game
We're doing it IRL and I'll be the DM
But we'd rather have some tools to help us keep track of things, for both the player and the DM.
Is there anything you guys recommend besides getting the campaign in DnDBeyond?
And we will not be using battle maps
Why won't you be using battle maps? A lot of adventures have battle maps. Are you going to be doing combat with theatre of the mind?
You can just use graph paper or a white board.
My first few times trying to run battle maps was hell
Using stuff like Roll20 or another VTT was very expensive and infuriating, as more time was spent preparing the campaign than actually playing it
Roll20 has a free account tier. Owlbear.rodeo is free.
Well, as DM prepping for each session can be longer than the session itself. That's quite common.
It is fairly complicated, and requires a decent amount of time to set up, no?
I'm not sure if the players are committed
It depends how complicated you want it to be.
So that's why I don't wanna invest too much time in the 1st session
¯_(ツ)_/¯
We're just testing the waters
Which adventure are you planning on running?
I'll check out OwlBear though, can't lose anything by doing that
Dragons of stormwreck Isles

tons of things you can do if in person. but one of the easiest is to pick up some wrapping paper from a dollar store, the kind with 1in cutting guide grids on the back, and draw on that, or cut it up into rectangles to act as rooms of a dungeon. Easy to draw on. Can use toys (eg lego minifigs) as creatures, or use those glass beads one finds in vases, or cut carboard circles with a letter/color for the player characters.
One of my favorite hacks is if you already own the board game Othello (https://www.amazon.com/Mattel-B3165-Othello/dp/B00004TQMQ) Then you can use the pieces, since the white sides work great with wet erase markers, I have a letter and number for the creature (eg: W1 is wolf 1), and then below that in red I write the hp (or if hiding that info just the state eg: fresh/hit/hurt/bloodied etc via an icon or shape or color [green/yellow/orange/red], or number of dots to represent relative/visible damage). I'm a fan of wet and dry erase markers and boards for tracking everything that is happening in combat like initiative, hp, spell resources, etc. Small whiteboard and wet erase markers are cheap and you can use them for whatever, not just gaming so it's never a waste.
Many times I've just played with whatever was on hand like cups, salt shakers, bits of napkins, etc. then you can measure distance with a ruler, a bit of string, or eyeball it. I love theater of the mind, but I still always have a tactical layout (no matter if it's virtual, or physical), because it really helps players and you to communicate when there is that to work off of. You can still primarily use theater of the mind, but having something to glance at and reference can really help to keep combat flowing.
OR a tip I heard recently and was surprised I never heard of is to use a chessboard. Especially when in a dungeon, many rooms will be less than that size and you only really need the grid for those locked in melee #dnd-newcomers message
We had a DM use their extra dice to show us how a combat scene was laid out to assist with theater of the mind! Maps can be helpful, also don’t the essentials/starter kits come with them? Even some campaign books do.
I love those cubes of smaller D6s for that. Can use the pips to represent monster types, or if all same type can use the pips to communicate relative damage/injury.
Poker chips as creatures works, can also use an erasable marker to label. Etsy also has token sets of varying size
Michaels also sells packs of pipe cleaners for $2 which can be shaped for terrain or AOE
im, very, very new to the d&d community, can someone give me a brief explanation on dms?
in direct messages i mean, sorry i should have clarified

Fighting Style unarmed fighting states that my unarmed strikes can deal 1d6+str, or 1d8 if no weapon or shield.
Monk martial arts states I can use dexterity INSTEAD OF strength for the attack and damage rolls of unarmed strikes and monk weapons
Can this be interpreted to mean a monk with unarmed fighting can roll 1d8 for unarmed attacks, but use dex for the attack and damage bonuses?
yes

What would be a good and reasonable way to allow my players circle if the moon druid wild shape into a dino? How could their character find out that dinos exist if they've never seen one?
I mean they can normally. They have to have seen one and it has to be of the appropriate CR
So they've had to have seen a dino to figure out they can wild shape into one? 👍
Yep, same for any creature. I'm generally a bit lenient and usually allow them to have seen most common creatures at one point in their lives, but dinosaurs unless they live in an area where dinos are common, they probably haven't seen
Aight
I don’t have much experience DMing but my table has been really loud and rowdy. Is there a good way to get them to be quiet while I or others am talking besides just yelling at them very loudly?
yep. You sit them down and talk with them out of game.
And yeah I understand common creatures like wolves and whatnot. But a prehistoric reptile on the verge on extinction, if not thought to already be extinct
That's the sort of thing you have to have an OOC conversation about
What does OOC stand for..?
Out Of Character
ah alr
You sit them down and say "Hey folks, it's really hard to run the game with you interrupting me all the time so please wait until I finish speaking."
If they won't do it? Then you have a bigger problem and should perhaps reconsider running for that group
Ok, thank you.
I have an idea for a half gnome dwarf, scholar/alchemist type but I am running into issues trying to create it on D&D beyond any suggestions?

How do feats work in this? I'm just confused with them honestly
Feats are an widely used optional rule where instead of improving ability scores at the normal level-up point, the character instead takes a feat. Feats provide a feature that is not normally part of a class or species features.
so in what cases would it be better to take a feat versus improving ability score
hello there
Depends on what you’re trying to achieve with the character. Often feats are fairly flavorful and can help make your character fit the feel you want to achieve. That said normal attributes leveling up is generally more “optimal” from a overall games mechanics performance perspective I feel.
ok i understand the point of a feat a little more now
Is there a group I can join as a level warlock?

okey oket i text you latter them and we see
is there an assassin background?
There's an assassin subclass for rogue
I believe there's like a criminal background that gives you some options like Hired Killer, to answer the question
Might have what youre looking for
can a tarrasque be a pet?
After playing this game for 10 years I would say anything can be a pet if you're brave/stupid enough
ye plus itll be a temporary one like let it be his pet for a couple of sessions then fluffy has to go to sleep
Probably a better question for #dnd-discussion or #dm-discussion - normally legendary monsters like a tarrasque are not allowed as pets but check with your DM.
cus tarrasques hibernate for decades and years
i am the dm
Well you are asking in the newcomers channel which is more for helping folks get started with the game - tarrasques as pets is very much beyond “just getting started”
so i shouldnt just gift the tarrasque as a pet the very first couple of sessions
ok thank u
so this should be planned in the near futer ?
I’d suggest asking in #dm-discussion where other DMs can weigh in on the pros and cons of tarrasque pets for players…
It would be very unusual for a tarrasque to be anyone's pet. It can also be very overpowered since the trrasque is a very powerful monster. But if that sounds fun to you, you can do it

I feel like I'm misunderstanding the way Wish works, is it only when you cast a spell after casting wish that you gain the stress of capped strength and necrotic damage on casting or is it the moment after you cast wish that you gain those debuffs?
Ah, the wording of the spell was throwing me through a loop, thanks
i want to let players visit a weapon shop but where can i find lists of weapons that exist (i am playing on roll20)
well i think you should imagine basic weapons for example, shortsword, shield dagger and find the stat block for them
alternatively you can google what should be in a standard weapons shop, normally there is something online with information from a premade adventure that can guide you 🙂
ok ty both
yup and just pick what you think would be good in the shop, consider the town, consider the skill of the blacksmith @civic summit

Question so i don't understand the game mechanics yet it says that a sword deals slashing damage but what if i poke someone or thrust my sword into someone or run towards then with my sword does that turn it into piercing damage instead ?
Hm, it seems I don't have permission to send messages in #750812887697588356, how do I get permission, and if I can't how do I join a game for a dm who is looking for players?
Weapons do a particular damage type but in the course of narratively describing combat the DM (or you) can say that instead of slashing the longsword at the foe the PC thrusts it into the foe's belly. For the most part is cosmetic flavour as there are very few monsters have resistances/immunities/vulnerabilities to only one type of damage type.
I don't know if this is a "newcomer" type question, but, what's the average spell level for each player level?
That's actually pretty interesting; we're probably so used to videogame character classes progressing at the same rate, this might take a bit for newcomers to get used to 🙂
I know, but I"m looking for an average, specifically spells gained via subclasses.
So, in other words, story/campaign trumping rules?
Sweet
I never said that.
You can add flavour as long as it doesn't affect the game mechanics.
Just trying to interpret/better understand what you're saying, my friend.
The flavour is the description of combat. So even though a longsword does Slashing damage you can describe what it does against your foe, such as poking them with its tip. If that foe isn't resistant/immune to Piercing damage it's safe to describe that the PC stabs the longsword into the foe. The flavour text doesn't trump the game mechanic since it doesn't directly affect it.
Gotcha gotcha. Thanks for clarifying 🙂
Hey guys, I'm super uber new to Dnd and trying to do a mini-campaign for practice with me and my gf, tl;dr I'm trying to understand the Warlock class and it's kinda confusing LOL What I get is that it only has one spell slot level and a lot less spell slots than wizard for example, but what i'm confused on is, looking at a wiki site at least, Warlock just looks infinitely worse than Wizard since wizard gets WAY more spells and higher spell levels at the same pace as Warlock? Am i just not understanding something or..
Kind of. So it took me a while to understand warlocks too. Basically they get a good bit of high level spells to cast at will and when they reach level 20 they can reset their spell slots for free. They’re also a lot better at melee combat, especially the hex blade. Essentially wizards get a lot of stuff for a price and not a lot of combat skills, while warlocks get a few things to do at will and a bunch of unique stuff for free. They’re also a lot better at melee combat.
I don’t play a ton of warlocks so if I’m wrong or someone else has things to add please do
Warlocks are basically the “build your own caster” class. Their spell slots are always at the highest level they can be cast at for the level you are, they come back on a short rest, and Eldritch invocations give a ton of customize ability on top of their pacts and subclasses.
I see I see tytyty for the help
when you use a spell slot and cast a spell does that spell slot go away or does that spell slot simply hold the spell you want?
Goes away.
At the moment of casting you "spend" the slot
so if i have 3 level 1 spell slots, i cast a level one spell and now i only have 2 slots?
im a sorcerer so its a long rest?
thats great, thank you
So, what do I exactly do in this channel?

Hi there! I am fairly new to dnd, I’ve never played a game, just DM’d for my friends who also had never played. I’ve read lots of the rule books and such, just never actually had a chance to play. I’ve always had a lot of anxiety about acting/role playing, but I really want to try a campaign. Any suggestions on finding my first campaign?
Im a university student, and I don’t have a lot of time, but I just really want to try
Be proactive: reach out to folks hosting games. You can do this online or in person at a local games (or comics) shop or a library, as they'll sometimes offer tabletop programming.
Cast a wide net: there are so many folks getting into the hobby for the first time, and online tools have made playing with people around the world possible in ways it hadn't been previously. We have channels here, but there are other sites to check. I can share those if you're interested.
Be patient: finding a group takes time. Finding a group you gel with can be even tougher. But there are enough folks playing out there that you're likely to find others who have similar ideas about fun as you do.

what other drinks are typically used in taverns?
Common drinks likely include ale, beer, wine, mead, spirits of various sorts but even those will vary a bit by area. Some more respectable taverns may have nonalcoholic drinks as well for younger visitors or patrons who prefer tea, etc.
In addition to this server, you can check various Discords (many D&D YouTubers have public ones with channels to find players/games, for example), MeetUp, Facebook, forums (D&DBeyond, Demiplane, Roll20, Fantasy Grounds), Reddit (r/LFG, r/roll20LFG, r/DnDLFG, r/LFG_Europe), StartPlaying, and Warhorn. If you’re interested in play by post (asynchronous text-based play), check out Role Gate, RPGCrossing, Gamers Plane, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
So, new DM here. Trying to figure out where and how to start my group in the campaign. Unfortunately, when everyone made their characters, turns out everyone's back story makes them a total loner. Would it be completely unheard of to start them off in combat, which then leads them to go to town to recover from the fight?
no that works fine. maybe the town comes under attack from a bandit/goblin raid or something like that, and you start them off mid combat.
What campaign you doing and what the party classes and backgrounds
Since it's a new group of players that have never played, we are doing the easy-mode essentials campaign. dragon of icespire peak I believe. Was thinking of starting the group off in a caravan transiting to town. A couple miles out of town, the caravan is attacked, group jumps out to defend. In the process, horses of the caravan get spooked and run off leaving the group to fight. Once they win, they have a 2 mile walk and during that walk, they exchange information about themselves. Thoughts?
Should work is that the opening encounter
Because I'm not familiar with lost mines. First time DM'ing.
Yes that would be the opening encounter. Unfortunately, everyone except one person decided their character backstory would be a total loner who prefers solitude instead of people. So the whole "Once upon a time in a tavern" won't be an easy way to get new players to interact with each other.
I planned on using battle to bring people together.
Did you run a session zero?
Have some bandits attack them randomly as they pass a wagon, then hire them to guard the wagon
Not yet, that's tomorrow.
I think you can use the narrative to pull these folks together, sure, and I wouldn't recommend against it. But I also think you can use the session to not just lay out game expectations but also to find ways to connect the characters to one another. (I'm personally in favor of group character creation because I've wound up in a similar position as what you describe. Live and learn!)
If there are no bonds between the PCs, they could try to backstab each other and the whole thing will descend into drama
Right, I'm just trying to avoid the situation where new players don't know what to say to get the story moving. Or even whole, "Yeah I have no reason to join your group because that's what my characters personality is like". That's kinda why I was thinking of putting them into a fight right off the bat and use the "You saved me back there, you ain't so bad" approach.
What are the PCs class wise
Wood Elf Druid, Tiefling Warlock, Life Cleric Dwarf, two players are TBD. So far, the cleric is the only one who wants to be the glue to keeps the group together. Lol
Look at the first part of lost mines, have some of the party start of in the inn and get hired to take the supplies to phandelver, if you can get 2 of the characters to kind of know each other and set together in the tavern then the quest giver might recognise one of them and ask them to do this job for them, they then meet the wagon driver/guide in the morning maybe the Druid is this character and then they pick up the other party member on the way as they are walking and they offer them a lift, the party then gets attacked by some goblins kills them then gets to phandelver and can now be offered the job to go to gnomegarde
That's not a bad idea either. But other question unrelated to the gathering of the party. On the map Phandelin, there is a broken down home/manor to the east on a hill but the campaign mentions nothing about it. Any idea what that is or is it just a blank slate for me to be creative with? Because I have ideas if that's the case.
Oh nevermind, the map this kit came with is WAY less detailed than the actual map. For some reason they only labeled like half of it.
That spot is a plot point in LMoP but not Icespire Peak.
Tresendar Manor I think is what it's called.
So since it's not a plot point for Icespire Peak, that gives me something to work with in case the players are like "I wanna check out that old broke down manor on the hill"
If you're running Icespire, you might read through the first two chapters of LMoP as inspiration (plus it's freely accessible).
hello i’m new what’s this about???

Hey
I want to send a message in #750812887697588356, but it says I don't have permission to post there, and #find-a-game didn't tell me how to fix the problem. Can anyone help me?

Thanks so much
Do all newly created characters start off as unarmored?
But they are just proficient with specific armor types and have to buy or procure it later
No, they have starting equipment based on their class/background.
Right but unless it explicitly says "choose medium armor" they are considered unarmored?
They are unarmoured if they aren't wearing any amour...
If you're unarmoured then your AC is 10 + Dex modifier.
(Unless you're a monk, barbarian, or tortle)
Right. So my newly created lvl 2 barbarian with soldier background will be considered unarmored but proficient in medium armor. He'll have to purchase the armor to raise his AC instead of having armor on inherently?
We're about to go on a stealth mission to assassinate a pirate king on an Island fortress. We have a side mission of killing the 1000+ pirates as well (would probably be suicide without a big plan).
The DM allowed us to BORROW 1 VERY Rare item or 3 rare items or 6 uncommon items to borrow from the quest giver.
Any cool items that would help us in combat against this very strong king?
But your barb has unarmoured defence for better AC
Yes.
10+dex+con what are your stats?
17 con, 12 dex. So AC would be 14
15
10+3+1
Oh yeah long day at work 😞
You good
Hi, I'ts been a while since I've played DND, i used to be in the titan rise coalition if anyone knows what that is. Is adventurer's league similar to that and how new is it, because I don't remember it being around when I used to play?
Adventurers League is an offical campaign, 5e rules and forgotten realms setting
Think like card game tournaments or local comp game meetings for dnd
It’s a lot more complicated I have the explanation I was given before I decided it ain’t for me somewhere
I don’t think I’m allowed to link to non-offical sites so I’m gonna throw it into a DM
I’ve never played I just made my first character and would like to start, anyone wanna help a brother out

Does anyone know of a good website to make dnd world maps?
Here are a bunch of options: https://www.dnd-compendium.com/dm-resources/maps-map-tools
So I am getting back into playing D&D and am interested in being DM. Are there any sites or interest in having an apprentice to learn the ways?
For how-to-DM, I really like Matt Colville's "Running the Game" YouTube series as well as blogs by the Angry GM, Sly Flourish, and the Alexandrian.
Ooo okay! Thank you! I will look into those 🙂
There's also a small legion of YouTubers dispensing DM advice. Just run a search and you'll turn up more than one person can reasonably absorb.
Awesome!! Thank you!
There are D&D Youtubers, such as Matt Colville, Sly Flourish, The DM Lair, Dungeon Dudes, Dungeon Craft, How to be a Great GM, Nerdarchy, Web DM, XP to Level 3, WASD20, Seth Skorkowsky, Esper the Bard, How to D&D, Zee Bashew, Don't Stop Thinking, Icarus Games, Runehammer, Zipperon Disney, and MonarchsFactory, who give advice on DMing and playing.
I found a better example that answered my question. Clerics get to pick armor at the start, barbs would not. Seeing this would've helped a lot sooner.
I had already said that based on your class/background you get starting equipment. Barbarians don't get any starting armour by default.
Is there a channel that I can post my warhammer miniatures in
#dnd-minis but this is a D&D server....
Do you have a link for the warhammer server
google?
Most of those are expired for me
I’d like to be a player if possible, I’m new to dnd and I may need help but I’m good with communication and listening
Check out the #looking-for-players channel.
I’m a very new follower of DND and haven’t even created a character yet.. so is it better if I filled out my character sheet in pen or on a pdf and print that out?
That can be a great way to get a feel for a character and the creation process. If you are planning on joining a game online, you probably want to have the character in dndbeyond as it's the most used method of sharing characters.
Alright, I’ll consider both options for a little while but thanks for the insight
Hey everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself and say how happy i am to join a DND discord server! Im pretty new to DND but I’ve got the basics down so pretty much just looking to play. It’s nice to meet everyone 🙂
Hey y’all, I’m uh.. extremely new but I know some stuff but I still have questions about stuff like how the game works and character sheets.

hey everyone I'm completlty new to dnd ive never played a game before or have anyone to play with, i was wondering if anyone knows good online versions or alternetives to the game ?
You can find online groups to play with, check out #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community .
@runic horizon come over to this channel please
Is this correct?
Yes good job
If you are willing to tell me what city you live in I might be able to help you find a store that does AL
Yeah I should tell you I have Aspergers syndrome so I get confused and forget stuff
It is all good. In person D&D can be a good experience for neural atypical folks
If you find a good dm and group
And Adventure League tends to be a positive and supportive community
I live in Newcastle-under-Lyme
Is that in Australia?
OK so I click on that and it will help?
Did I end up on Australian discord somehow?
No that was me making a mistake
OK but I would not be surprised
This server is international, but a lot of folks are US-based.
I have an IQ 142 but the Internet make me feel like an idiot with the odd mistakes I make
I am even more clueless about UK
But try this list of stores to call https://locator.wizards.com/search?searchType=stores&query=Newcastle upon Tyne, UK&distance=10&page=1&sort=date&sortDirection=asc
We do do have a newcastle upon Tyne but it's like 50 miles away
And if they don’t have Adventure League ask them if they know anyone who does
Yeah I think that's geek box in Newcastle
There are also UK-centric D&D Discords as well as Reddit's r/LFG_Europe.
You can also play online. I can help you with some info if you want
For AL
Yeah this is my first time on discord so I don't really understand discord
May I pm you?
What's that mean?
Send you a message with a link for a server
Ok
We try to be very respectful of privacy here
hit points are your health.
Is it normal for my character to have 9 max hit points.
So that answers the first part of this question as well. Temp hit points are 'extra' hit points that you get from some spells or abilities. They get used up first and go away when you rest or when the effect's duration expires
Hit Points expresses both your health and your ability to handle damage
Oh ok
Yes, that's normal for a level 1 character, especially rogue, bard, or cleric for example
Ah. I’m a sorcerer.
As you level up you don’t actually gain mass or anything but you do gain more skill you can spend to mitigate the effects of someone hitting you
You have 16 constitution?
So it kind of is like health and stamina
hmm...then a sorcerer should have 8 hp at level 1 with that constitution
Unless you're getting an extra hp from something else
Sorcerers start with 6 at level 1 and your con gives you +2
What is your background/race for your Sorc, @lyric portal
Outlander and elf.
Some races and some backgrounds give you the toughness feat
Is outlander a background?
Which gives you +1 HP per level
good point, hadn't thought of that
Oh ok
Oh ok
You probably just miscounted hp somewhere 🙂 should be 8
What calculated your HP? Was it DNDBeyond or the like?
DnD beyond
Can you paste a link to your char? Copy and paste the url to it from your browser
If you are in the app please go into the web browser and sign in and get to your char there (and enjoy a much better UI for D&D Beyond too)
If I cast Expeditious Retreat & have Haste on myself at the same time, does it double my speed?
You might need to make sure it is flagged as public
Oh ok
It is not giving me access
Done
If you can give me access I’ll be happy to take a look
Your Charisma is 7 as a sorcerer?
Oh, okay, that's a bloodline right?
Yeah it’s a sorcerous orgin
Inspiration is something a DM can give out for good roleplay, basically allowing you to roll again.
Also, bards can give inspiration, allowing you to roll an extra die (a d6 or d8 or something like that) and add it to your roll
I chose brass for the type
Oh ok
If you can (according to your dm) @lyric portal you might want to see if you can do a point buy
Alright, is that where you have a limited amount of points and need to arrange them?
Yeah, honestly...you should have a word with the person who made that character. With charisma 7 your sorcerer is going to have a lot of trouble
Yeah it is a really poor allotment
For a sorcerer I would make a half elf
Do Dark Halfelf for extra goodness
eh, elf isn't bad for sorcerer, can still work
Well DnD Beyond arranged the stats, not me
And get +2 char and +1 to 2 other stats
Don’t let D&D beyond arrange it
Go back and assign them differently. Or do a point buy and use stats like suggested in here https://rpgbot.net/dnd5/characters/classes/sorcerer/
You can get 8/14/14/10/10/15
My brain hurts looking at all that.
It’s alright.
Just do point buy
I’m going to make a new character, and I’ll do point buy
And get CHA up to 14 or 15 with the half elf
It’ll be a dark half elf sorcerer.
And then add the other bonus points to dec and con
K
And try for even scores dex and con
Yo can have 8 str, and even 8 int and wins
So you can have 8/16/16/8/8/17 which is pretty good
Alr. I might just have some make the character for me or I’ll have to use my brain and make the skills correctly.
I’ll do that one then.
You can follow a build guide or as a start take skills that play off your strength
So take acrobatics (dex), persuasion (cha) at a minimum
That’s confusing but ok-
Some of this is from game experience
I haven’t played DnD before so that’s why I’m so confused.
There are various situations in the game where you will need to move around and make a check or get hurt
So you want acrobatics or athletics to cover those situations
So almost everyone wants one of those
There will also be situations where you or the group will need to convince someone of something to get a clue to advance in the story
Hm, alright.
So having persuasion or intimidation are good for that
And in general persuasion is easier to roleplay
Now if you want to give up 2 points of dex (which is OK if you find a way to wear medium armor) then put that into int or wisdom
Probably wisdom because the third important skill generally is perception

Although if you like intelligence then investigation and arcana or good
For those you just don’t want to get a penalty for them
But in my caster I take the -1 from an 8 int
And if you take the skill you add your proficiency bonus to it
So it can work out as you level up
But as a new player just get acrobatics and persuasion
That’s a lot, I’m really confused.. I’m sure it’s easier to learn, right?
Once you play a time or two it will make a lot more sense
For the most part your group will have other skills
Oh ok
So the idea is you really want acrobatics (or athletics) so you can survive certain things
Me and my friends are planning a campaign and it’s all of our first time playing so it might be confusing for all of us.
And then get skills based on your best stats
If you guys were in the Bay Area I would invite you to come run in a one shot/learn to play module for adventure league
And I would be happy to teach your group
Ah, we all live over in Texas, but yeah if we did that would be nice. But the one flaw is that I’m underage and so are they.
Underage might be better handled online
You could also watch some YouTube videos
Various DMs stream their game sessions
So you can see how a game runs in person
Ah ok, one of friends is the DM so I’ll recommend it to them while I send a video for players to my friends.
I would suggest you all watch how a game is played, make sure you find a low level game
And the DM could watch videos from YouTube channels like DM’s Lair and Dungeon Dudes
They have some stuff for new DMs
Ah, alright.
There is a lot of info and it can be a little overwhelming at first but if you stick to it and maybe blindly follow some advice it will become second nature faster than you might think
You can have fun in the game even without optimized builds
Yeah, it’s plenty to take in, I think I may get the gist of it though.
But getting some basic optimization like knowing what the prime stat for each class is and make that the highest is important to improve the fun
In general you want at least 14 dex and 14 con and as high as possible in your main stat
Ah, ok.
If you wear heavy armor you can leave dex lower
I don’t know if my character even wears armor.
A sorcerer does not wear significant armor
But you could do a popular multi class call a sorelock
Where you start off as a Hexblade warlock which gives you medium armor and some other cool stuff
And then after 2 levels of that you switch to sorcerer
And in that deal you get an amazing cantrip called Eldritch Blast that you can shoot as often as you want
And it is very damaging
As a new player a warlock is very simple to play
cuz you pretty much use Eldritch blast and then add features that make it stronger and stronger
But that may be too much info, sorry if it is

@raw sundial I made a new character, and i put the stats in the right places. https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/95007638
Can someone explain character stats and the modifiers. Is there a max total for like stat points and what does the (+3 / -3) actually do in terms off rolls?
The plus or minus is the bonus to associated rolls and skills. As for your stats and modifiers, your stats are the core of your capabilities and the modifiers are born to represent how good or bad you are consistently
Have you read the free basic rules? They are in the pinned message here in this channel.
The modifier determines bonus to Ability Checks, Attacks, Spellcasting, etc

Did you roll that?
