Welcome! What kind of assistance are you looking for, specifically?
Creating my character
Right, but what specifically? Do you need help with the rules for character creation, with filling in the details of a character you already have in mind, or something else?
There’s an article here with some general advice, it that helps:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/724-new-players-guide-making-your-first-character
Happy Friday everyone! I just joined the community. It's been about 20 years since I played D&D and I'm finally getting back into it. My kids have also expressed interest so I've started to figure out how to be a DM for them. But I also want to find a group to play with as well since I haven't played in such a long time.
welcome!
If you are looking for an online play group, we have channels dedicated to helping people find groups
?looking
We have four channels to help you find your next game:
• #looking-for-players — Dungeon Masters/groups looking for players.
• #750812887697588356 — Players or groups looking for Dungeon Masters.
• #looking-for-community — Communities looking for members.
• #paid-looking-for-game — Professional DMs advertising services.
If you can’t see any of these channels, you will need to head to #880965682462875679 and select the appropriate role depending on exactly what you're looking for.
And I believe if you played 20 years ago, that would be one of the older editions of D&D. If you need a crash course on 5e, the free basic rules are pinned in this channel
Thank you! I appreciate that. Yeah I went out and bought the Essentials box set and have been reading up on everything. It's been really helpful. Last time I played our DM had us in Krynn from the DragonLance series, which was fun.
You might be excited to learn then, that there have been rumors about a dragon lance sourcebook coming to 5e in the nearish future
I mean, it’s not a rumor. They have confirmed it’s coming.
We just don’t know when
ah right. Thank you for the correction
Thats awesome! I loved the DragonLance series and have read through many of the books.
Hey I have an idea for a Jamaican Rasta Bard character with a bass guitar the typical support that plucks songs of tranquility and good vibes and then pluck songs that hypnotize and maybe give X amount of debuffs on enemies What subclass in yalls opinion would go wellw that play style
I have a question for DMs and experienced players. I’m new to D&D, been playing for 2 months. I pay to pay each week, no biggie, I want to support the DM. However in the party, there is an experienced player who is also a DM. He has the adventure book and uses it. He is sterling the players to go to places and where to go in the dungeon vs us exploring. When the DM changes something, he complains about that’s not in the book. We’re at 3rd level, now he wants to retire his character and start a new one because the DM ventures away from source material. Is this acceptable? I feel like the game is ruined as he makes the decisions and takes the times he wants??
If I had a player tell me I couldn’t run a game the way I chose because it’s “not in the book” I’d ask them to run it themselves somewhere else.
It’s real poor form for a player to read the adventure as they are playing it.
in the end, the DM is the person in charge.....basically the GOD of the world they are running.
For me as a new player, I feel like he’s ruining the game, telling the party where to go, how to do it, and what items he knows is in the treasure, and will take
What they say goes, I've been playing for about 30ish years now and I find that the DM's that run the adventures I play in often go outside the box on campaigns. They make it more playable for the types of players playing the game.
From what I understand the DM is changing the adventure so now he wants to change sun-class because his character isn’t able to what he wants to do
talk to the player and explain your thoughts, if they don't like it they can find a new campaign to play in.
If you’re paying for this game you absolutely need to bring this up to your dm. You shouldn’t be paying to enable someone else’s power fantasy at the cost of your fun and your money.
valid point
I don’t charge for my games, but if I had a player at my table make a habit out of that they’d get the boot (after clearly communicating a warning of course)
I messaged the DM today to bring up my concerns. The player put in a chat box that this is what the adventure book says, and his upset so he’s changing class. I find it upsetting because I want surprise and be able to learn, yet the player is controlling the play
Asking whether that's "acceptable" is a tricky question. There's no one right way to play D&D, the books even say that each group is free to modify the rules to suit their group's style of play. But I think a great many people would say that player is out of line. There's no requirement that the DM runs the adventure exactly as it is in the book. And reading ahead to find out what's going to happen? Hey, if he doesn't want any surprises that's one thing, but spoiling it for the other players? Major party foul. Probably start by addressing it with the DM privately. If the behavior isn't something they condone, ask that they address it with the player. At the end of the day, each player has to decide if a particular group is right for them. If you're not having fun, and the player isn't going to change their behavior, my recommendation is to withdraw, and explain to the DM why.
I’m a cleric and we found a cleric scroll, he’s a wizard. But he said he wanted the scroll because he’s going to multi-class later, and wants it
Plus if you’re paying for games you will find one super quick if you decide to bail on this one.
It sounds like that player has a serious case of Main Character Syndrome
hi! im new to playing dnd and im not sure if i get the rules and how to play it very well can anyone fill me in pls?
Welcome! Is there a specific rule you were curious about?
Hi im new and looking for some people to play with

Sorry if this gets asked a lot but, DMs, is there any certain way you have to DM or is it pretty free form? I've been playing only for a short time but as my group progresses I get more interested in the creativity behind the game not so much as in the game. I wanna become a dungeon master but I don't know where to start. So im just curious about the limitations, if there are any really and what makes a good dungeon master?
Hiiii 🙂
Lovely to meet you @kind skiff
Nice to meet you too :))
Essentially, you are a good DM if your players are having fun and looking forward to every seession
Oh that's great. How did you start being a DM? Was it hard at first or was it pretty laid back?
More laid back I started at age 15 having never played or seen the game played before lol
Ooh I love it. It's just been so interesting reading about the game and such but I always imagined these like really strict players so that makes me feel pretty good. Thank you so much!!
Strict players sound YIKES
RIGHT. I mean I'm sure there are a few of those kinds of players out there but it makes me feel good to know that there's leniency
Yeah there might be some "competitive players" but normally I don't want them in my games haha yikes no thanks omg
Laid back and chill players are better imo
When it comes to monsters and stuff can you create your own or do you have to go by book. I know the monster manual exists I just wanna know how crazy I can get
It's better to take a "standard" monster's stats and then just reskin it to look different. For example if you take let's say a normal goblin and you make it into.... the monster under your bed idk
I seee. Cause in my current campaign we fought bats that had no eyes and ate eyes so they can see and it was all over the place. I mean I loved it but I didn't really understand what I was fighting or how it worked?
If that makes sense. Is the monster manual a good buy then in your opinion?
The monster stat blocks are carefully balanced with a lot of mathematics behind it and unless you love math for some reason it would be a waste of time making your own from absolutely scratch
dndbeyond, an official Wizards of the Coast website, publishes all the monsters online without purchasing a membership (better?)
Thank you sm
This has been a very eye opening experience I don't think I would get from just reading a book
Yeah, you can find all the monsters in the free Basic Rules right here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters?filter-source=1
What does that mean
@kind skiff everyone in the D&D community is immensely happy to help all new DMs and players
:))
My personal rule of thumb which I use for running games is this:
- With a full group (4 or 5 players) one Encounter takes approximately one hour.
- An Encounter can be Combat, Roleplay, Exploration, Skill Test, Puzzle solving, etc.
- So if you're running a three hour game, let's say, you can count on preparing three encounters.
- Maybe prepare one extra optional encounter in case the players get through them faster than you expected.
.
So perhaps one combat, one skill test, one exploration, and one puzzle.... or whatever
@kind skiff if you break every session down to these basics, you can easily prepare for your session without feeling "lost"
Is it okay if I put that in my notes and save it
Yup of course if you want to jot that down
Thanksss
Lol guess no gifs but I too am taking notes 😂
I just finished my very first DM session earlier
Right It's so cool so excited to start mine
Hopefully I'll be doing a sesh with some friends and family :>>
Would for sure recommend looking into some modules! It helped me out a ton haha
What are those
Prepwritten adventures usually for sale or free
Pre written adventures
Aaah I see thank you
hey can someone help me? i got the starter set and i have a group of friends who are willing to play but im lost and im currently on my bed surrounded in books and dice and i dont know what to do or where to start :< my friends have made their characters but idk if its correct since theyve barely played either ;-;

Unless you want to try a module?
i have the lost mine of phandelver thing it came in the starter set
Okay!
That is a good module
i just dont like understand any of this and idk where to start
Have you ever played D&D or watched it being played at all?
Ohh okay and when is your session scheduled for?
Good idea 🙂
The Phandelver module begins with a roleplaying enounter
Where you meet the other party members (if they don't already know each other) and receive a small JOB of driving a wagon full of supplies to the town of Phandelver.
Are you confused on how to run a roleplaying encounter like this one?
i think i could figure it out
Okay!
Then next you will have a Traveling encounter.... it takes a couple of days to journey from the starting location to the town of Phandelver.
You can either make it interesting/detailed or you can kind of skip over the traveling and say, "Two days later you turn left off the main road and head east on the Triboar Trail"
okays
If you make it interesting/detailed then it will take about one hour as well
Finally, you have a Combat encounter on the road, where some goblins have set up an ambush.
The combat will take at least one hour as well if not more.
So now you're three hours into the session, how long do you want the session to go for?
probably a maximum of 4 or 5 hours? but it depends
Okay!
Once you know how long the session is going to run for, you can plan how far you need to prepare, how many encounters will happen during it 🙂
alright!
Anything else?
no i think its okay for now, thanks for helping!
brand new player here, should i create a character before or after joining a group/campaign? should i make one to fit along with the group? or should i spend a lot of time fleshing out a character beforehand?
see, what I do, is I make characters beforehand to practice, and see what concepts I vibe with. but then I make a character with the group (or at least, for the group)
okay makes sense, ill keep that in mind
Yes, by all means play around with the Character Builder so you're familiar with it. Practice creating characters, leveling them up, etc. But I wouldn't go into a group with a fully rolled-up character. If nothing else, your DM might have some specific rules for character creation in their world(a particular way to roll stats, disallowed races or classes, etc). Come up with a couple of ideas, let the DM give you an overview of the world they'll be running, and see if one of your ideas will fit.
I've created around six different characters and depending on the DM/campaign I usually just select whichever one of them works better.
Hey im new to the whole D&D thing how do I start
Hiiii
Welcome 😀
There are some helpful links in the pinned messages of this channel to get you started
@dawn shell @simple goblet Thanks for a nice welcome
can someone help me with something? im trying to to fix my character but im having trouble understanding the subclasses.
Can you explain more?
im making a warforged samurai, but im trying to figure out the class and subclass for it
you... answered your question already.
Samurai.
Fighter. hit level 3. pick Samurai from Xanathar's Guide to Everything. done
oh oki! thanks!
And if samurai doesn’t fit your style, go BM and pick the techniques that fit it
very helpful, thanks
hi
How do you play dnd
We’ve got some helpful links in the pinned messages here that can walk you through the basics.
But if you’ve got a more specific question, we can help with that, too.
Um I'm new to dnd beyond and have made a character but I need a game to join does anyone know how or have a game I can join
We have four channels to help you find your next game:

Hi, my friend told me if u wanted to get into dnd then this was where to start.. any tip for a complete noob
the pins have a delightful list of resources to help with.
I would definitely recommend starting with the Basic Rules. They're available for free as a .pdf download, or readable on the D&D Beyond website(one of the pinned links in this channel). It's pretty much the "rules" part of the Players Handbook and a limited sampling of the options you can pick for your character. They'll give you a good overview of how the game is played, how characters are created, etc. Don't try to absorb it all in one sitting, just take it a section at a time and if you have any specific questions there are plenty of people here who are happy to help.
Thanks
hey sorry to ask but im pretty much new to dnd, i watch alot of twitch streams etc but have never really played, i was wondering what the best way would be to find a group to play with seeing as im new and havent played before

ah ty
So I have a group of us that's willing to play DnD at some point. I haven't played properly in over 10 years and the other 2-3 are new to it. Is it possible for us to get a crash course session?
Hi there! that is not really a service we can provide.. however there are helpful articles and videos out there than can help get you started such as: Need some guidance on how to play D&D over the internet? Here's a full article walking you through the details (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online) and a How to play D&D online with Lauren Urban on Todd Talks (https://youtu.be/_ThfJ3NTdC4)
Ockie dockie, I'll look into these. Is there a specific edition that currently played, any or is it most recent?
D&D Beyond uses 5th edition so all it's resources are related to those rule-sets
In the description of the looking for dm channel it says that it’s for searching for dms for sessions but it looks more like a place for players to find themselves parties, which one is it?
a player posts in looking-for-dm when they are looking for a DM.
On the other hand, a DM posts in looking-for-players when they're saying "hey I've got a game come along now"
Those are kind of the same thing; it's for players looking for DMs who are already putting together groups
Ok thanks
can someone tell me where I can learn dnd
me too please and please ping me
If you check the pinned messages, you'll find lots of useful resources for getting started with D&D
ok thanks!
Hello @pallid grotto, do you have questions about getting started with D&D or D&D Beyond?
My friend and I are starting dnd, he chose a Tortle for his race after seeing them on youtube is this allowed as its not in my players handbook?
The DM generally decides which source material is going be be allowed. This should be communicated before character creation
the thing is we both are starting together and i am the dm
it is official content available in Explorer's Guide to Wildemount.
You can decide if you allow tortle or not
There’s nothing about tortle that is gamebreaking, if that’s your concern. Also, join us in #dm-discussion for, well, DM Discussion.
I have already made caracters but never play much
I need a group with a good dm that does story well if there’s any here

should i get the dungeon kit of the wilderness kit?
It depends if you think you'll be running more overland travel, or dungeon exploration
If neither, then the stand DM screen will do you well
for lost mines of phandelver
ok cool
@pallid grotto check this message
Although keep in mind that DMs often ask you don't bring a character to the table, but instead make one specifically for the game
I understand
i am attempting to run lost mines of phandelver in the book there are maps or game boards how do i get these so that the players play on them with their minis
You will have to print them out
a4?
A standard size for maps is 5ft = 1"
So for a 5ft gridded map, that'll be 1" per square, for 10ft that'll be 2"
So yeah, the maps will be fairly large
so a2 or a1
Hey I'm new and my friends have voted me to be the dm do u guys know where I can go to find out the basic rules and stuff and what I can do wile they're making their character sheets?
the basic rules are pinned in this channel
Thanks
Just remember to not rush. DND isn't really something you just say "Let's randomly play DND" and you're in it by the night, really. It's much more of a weekly thing due to taking a while to play and for the DM to prepare things, and potentially write further, making NPCs (the shopkeep in the town they're going to, the nobles, a plothook or two), events, etc.
alright thanks im probably gonna use the already made campaigns on the dndbeyond app cus i think theres some free ones but thank you
Alr when starting a new pregenerated campaign with a new party is it best to make an encounter where they all meet first?
That’s kind of what a session zero is, right? Introducing the party to each other, weaving backstories, setting limits for the campaign going forward?
Homebrew is content created by players and DMs to use at their tables, sometimes shared with the community
You can use it when playing D&D, yeah
You don't need to be using a VTT, and not all homebrew can be supported on all digital platforms, it depends how complex it is
yo
Is there anyone that can add me to there campaign im trying to be a tiefling and i have no experience in this

hey, if you need another player im just starting out as well, are you playing by discord? prob cant do face to face....
time dependant too
bloody time zones...
hello i am a newbie like extremely new i just made a character like yesterday idk what to do or how to join a game or what
Welcome! If you check a few messages up, there’s a list of channels to help you find a game. ☝🏻
Hello! i made a group on discord and wanted to know if anyone wanted to join? Its for beginners and has easy scenarios/stories. You can ping me if you want to join! Have a nice day/night/evening.
Game invites should be posted in #looking-for-players. Just make sure to use the template there in the pinned messages. (Anything not using the template gets removed.)
Can anyone help me learn the game? I find the links in pins confusing. I need a person to guide me through the process.
Ahh I'm sorry ok
Did you have any specific questions? What part has you confused?
well
everything basically
for the character building i didnt know what i was doing
i pressed random stuff
Do you want to share a link to your character and get some advice?
My suggestion is get a prefilled character sheet and play with a beginner dungeon master.🤷
The dungeon master is the person who makes up the story
They can also have a character in the game. Sometimes.
ok
First priority, read the basic rules. Pinned links in this channel are a bunch of helpful resources.
You can basically do anything. For example, if you want to jump off a cliff into artic waters, you would roll a d20 (20 sided dice) for idk, durability. Durability (just an example) would be under constitution. Constitution is basically how strong your body is. Like durable. So you roll for durability and let's say since they're artic waters you need to roll 18 or higher. You roll a d20 and get 15. Each skill has a modifier that affects the roll. So how about your constitution modifier is +3. Then you get it. I think that's how it works.
You might want to adjust your ability scores. The Quick Build for a Fighter suggests this:
First, make Strength or Dexterity your highest ability score, depending on whether you want to focus on melee weapons or on archery (or finesse weapons). Your next-highest score should be Constitution, or Intelligence if you plan to adopt the Eldritch Knight martial archetype.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/fighter#CreatingaFighter
Then just make sure you equip your armor/weapon.
But otherwise, it looks good!

Oh shoot. Sorry about that
@lyric fjord Please keep things on topic for the channel you're posting in
This is not the channel for opinions on paid D&D games
I did not give an opinion on paid games, I gave an opinion on how to user friendly the new comers chat can be
It is very difficult and easily able to muted for asking questions
That is not a matter of discussion for this channel. If you have any questions about a warning or mute you may have received, you can ask a moderator contact you to discuss the matter in #moderator-support
Where do you start if you have no knowledge of dnd or discord
Aside from just reading the manual
Like many things, just observing a community can be a good starting point of learning the dos and don’ts of how the community works and expectations. For D&D I recommend reading/skimming the free basic rules, then watching some D&D livestream or videos of people playing the game, then trying to make your own character, and finally locating a group to play with.
As far as learning Discord… that’s tough because Discord is constantly changing. But I guess play around with it and learn how the different Discord settings work (push to talk, etc)
I have watched live streams that’s why I decided to try and learn the game, I read the manual as best as I can coming from zero
Sounds good. Also remember that many streamed games are entertainment first over actual game rules fidelity. But still useful to learn from (particularly how to play into the character and story pacing).
I have a feeling I am just going to have to hire a paid game to actually get started, it’s just so confusing
Uh. Okay. Usually you can find local game and comic stores with a D&D group and they may take new players.
Just go in humble and willing to learn.
Makes a big difference
Nothing in my area, I live in a large city, all shops shut down games aside from mtg
I think one does a pathfinder?
Everything went online from covid
Pathfinder has its roots in D&D
I am aware, just saying I did google local shops before I this
I haven’t even had a chance to be a know it all non humble player because it is really hard to even find step one
Libraries, colleges, and meetup groups may also have games
More than enough free games to find don't rush into a pay to play
@keen marlin things are looking up!
Hello! I am 100% new to D&D. Created my first character just last night. I still don't quite understand everything, but I've never really picked up on or enjoyed watching those series from creatives like Critical Role. I did get myself the core rulebooks gift set and still reading through the PHB.
Someone I know suggested I try being a DM, but I think they suggested it only because the two of us did forum-based roleplay for a couple years. I don't think it's entirely the same.
It has been difficult for my brain to switch off "know every rule and detail" and to just "have fun" so it's gonna be a lot of different learning curves as I venture through my first few experiences with D&D.
Sorry to talk anyone's ear off. Just anxious all around and hoping to find D&D as enjoyable as I've always imagined.
Hi! Rule number 1 with D&D is to relax and have fun! As long as you do that you'll enjoy yourself!
Thank you! It's just going to be difficult for my brain to remember that. It goes into overdrive whenever I pick up something new.
Honestly, every DM gets things wrong, no matter how long they’ve played. 😅
Just focus on what you do know. If you have to make up a ruling in the moment to keep the game going, do it. You can always look up the answer later and share it with the group for your next session.
Thank you for the advice. 💕
Or if you need a quick answer in-game, #dnd-rules has you covered. 😉
I am in the same boat when it comes to being a brand new person to D&D I have friend who have played for awhile and finally talked me into playing but the down side is they hardly play anymore so where I’m from it’s gonna be hard to find people to play with lol
There are always online games.
It's a bit of an adventure for me, because I struggle with reaching out to find groups. Like, even when I was looking to join in-person board game days at my local game store pre-pandemic. The anxiety hasn't changed since looking online. But I know I've gotta work on that part to be able to play.
It gets easier. I still get a little nervous playing with new groups and I got thousands of hours in this hobby now.
I will definitely look into that especially on days I don’t work so I have time!
That's another thing: working around my schedule for work. 😬
Do you have a rotating schedule?
Yeah. Sometimes I work 9am to 6pm on Saturday, for example, but next week Saturday I'll be 2pm to 11pm.
The full schedule possibilities vary from 9am, 2pm, 4pm. And with the upcoming SummerSlam event, it's a mandatory work day. Those types of days are rare, but can mean I'll have to skip a session or, if the group is nice enough, delay the session day.
I can work 5-6 days a week myself usually 5am and don’t get home till about 9 pm EST
That’s why I mostly play text-based games: easier to fit into a busy schedule.
It's not so much having a busy schedule as it's a rotating one. I will usually know my schedule 2 weeks at a time with a 3rd week posted a week in advance.
One of my anxieties with looking for a group is because of how they do my scheduling at work. I don't want to be a difficult player, y'know?
I've always done text-based games or forum-based roleplays, but part of the draw to D&D for me is that it's a TTRPG and that's what I'm looking for; of course, with VC and something like Roll20 instead of being in-person.
Definitely the best way to play is VC & Roll20
How are those games? I'll try anything once
I am the newest
Like any other game of D&D: it depends on the group.
If you’ve got a party that’s committed to keeping things moving and checking in daily, it can be a lot of fun.
But if people aren’t showing up consistently, it can really bog things down.
hello everyone, i just recently got into dnd. im still learning a bit of the basics and everything else but im looking forward to playing it someday with some of you:)
So my last rookie question of the day LOL; is there any VTTs that work on mobile?
Specifically an iPhone 12 Pro
Hi all 👋🏻 new to the world of DnD hoping to play and learn more, guessing online play mostly which is fine (can’t find a group where I am :(..) anyways! Hi! : D 😄
@grand ridge The only one I'm aware of is Owlbear Rodeo, almost every other VTT is very much designed for computers
Owlbear rodeo is what my group uses it works like a charm most of the time
Is it an actual app or does it work straight from the browser?
Because I found the browser version but I can’t find an app for it on the Apple store
It works straight from the browser
Awesome! It should be my go to way to play until I get a PC. Will use beyond to build my first character! This is such a welcoming community, thanks for all the info guys!
It's such a good place to use maps and tokens you can either chose to use the default or create you're own tokens and import maps
That’s great, I probably won’t try to DM for a while, I know I have the creativity for it it’s just that I want to read into the game as a player first
I lack the creativity for the DM folk myself but I love the rules and stuff and I love helping people learn the game and stuff
Hi
Hi
I just joined
If you need any help the community is willing to help

• #750812887697588356 — Players or groups looking for Dungeon Masters.
• #looking-for-community — Communities looking for members.
• #paid-looking-for-game — Professional DMs advertising services.

Still exist
Almost done with my character and will play a game despite everything you guys have done
Hello guys! Disciple here, brand new to D&D (1 session experience). I'm excited to learn the ins and outs and hopefully get under an experienced DM to see how things flow and who can train me in the ways.
@lethal vortex Check out The Adventures League or looking for group- will save you a lot of time, I just started as new but they helped me figure out the steps
@lethal vortex after that you probably can get help here
@lethal vortex welcome! We have lots of useful links pinned in this channel
Also check out #880965682462875679 where you can see a list of our channels, what they're about, and how to get access to them
As for finding groups

@lethal vortex the hardest part now has been figuring out roll20, not very intuitive
Thanks for the info. Where do you find The Adventures League and The Looking For Group at?
Yeah I have no clue about the roll20. I read the forum on DDB but still confusing lol.
Any idea on how to find PbP games?
@lethal vortex TAL is a different discord, LFG is for pay dnd
Roll20 is a vtt or virtual tabletop, they're an optional way to play online
You can try searching for pbp in:looking-for-players or text in:looking-for-players.
@lethal vortex just use google and reach out, they are new player friendly
If you're looking for play by post games, I recommend checking out the D&D Beyond forums. We have a section for pbp games
@lethal vortex most stuff in beyond is not for new players they call it “hand holding” what we just discussed, and if you ask follow ups on the stuff the mod sent you you will be muted
@lethal vortex also
Gotcha. I'm not interested in paying (yet). Just learning the basics. I'll do some more googling then. I tried one of the forums, but it doesn't seem like they use discord to communicate. Does each DM use a different method?
Paid games are exclusively advertised in #paid-looking-for-game so you can just avoid that channel
Let's keep things on topic, please.
Yeah, lots of groups play in lots of different ways.
Yup!
The group I DM for use Zoom for Voice chat, Signal for between sessions Comms, Owlbear Rodeo for maps and DDB for character sheets and dice rolls. Everyone has their own preferred systems
At the end of the day, the only thing you really need for D&D is a way to communicate -- and there's lots of different options for doing that. 😅
That’s not true at all- you need to read the books, figure out your character, make one on the preferred system, then post on the joining chats
Am I not even allowed to thumbs down a post?
All users are expected to treat each other with respect. You're welcome to respectfully disagree with a statement, but using negative emoji on someone else's post is not appropriate.
I respectfully disagree with what you said on how to start as a new player
And that's fine.
The point of my statement is that with so many different ways to communicate, not every group is going to use Discord.
Great- add that to the rules list, I did not see it
hello
It's the very first rule in #520291181083754516.
• It is expected that every member of our community treats everyone else with courtesy and respect. You may not agree with someone else's opinion, but there is no excuse for being rude or insulting people. Please be polite in your posts.
If you have any further questions about the rules, I'll be happy to answer them in #moderator-support.
But it's not the topic for this channel.
I feel it’s not entirely true to say you will be using NOT d20 on an online group found through this forum
What is the topic for this channel? I'm so confused....
Get ready! This will be funny
You can find the channel topic at the top of each channel.
New to D&D or D&D Beyond? Got questions on how to get started? Ask them here! We ask people focus on the basics; more advanced questions can be asked in our other channels
Ask a follow up!
I'm new to discord. Please explain how I can find these channels?
This channel is for asking questions about the basics of the game and where to go to ask more specific questions
Which channels specifically?
You are IN the Chanel, just does not feel like it’s for new players
If you head to #880965682462875679, you can find a list of all our channels
See? Lol
You can find the possible channels in #880965682462875679. There is a post where you can choose which channels you want to see :)
Read this and make a character
I made an elf bard, just took a lot to figure out what that meant
That channel lead me to this channel, now I'm being told this isn't the channel for newcomers to ask general questions?
We have channels for dungeon masters #dm-discussion
Rules #dnd-rules
Making your own content, called homebrew #homebrew
Plus many others
It is, feel free to ask any questions you have
Think of this like using Indeed- you do all the work and education, maybe you GET to play
Again, let's keep things on topic, please.
Roger!
So how is this off topic?
What question can we answer for you, Disciple?
I think they asked how to start as a new player?
In the new player chat
I might just be nuts
No worries. We were able to clear things up through DMs.
Normally new people ask questions, and we try to help them understand what's going on. Unfortunately sometimes that is difficult when there is a lot of chatter in the channel
Yep, we do ask people stick to either asking questions as newcomers, or providing answers
Maybe have a nice flow chart or template for “ I am new to dnd and would like to start@ I would make that
Just what I would do- I am not in charge but a nice step by step would be nice, I got that elsewhere but it would be nice here
That would a good suggestion for #ddb-feedback
Almost like you are a mod? If you agree ask that, if you don’t then do nothing
Fist step of my flow chart here would be what I wrote- leave, this is not actually for new players
Except it is
again, if you want to offer feedback, #ddb-feedback is the place to do so.
This is not the appropriate channel for that
Many of the questions that newcomers as are broad stroke questions like "how do I get started?" and "how do I make a character?" which is why there is simple and well written resources pinned in this channel to answer those questions. Rather than paraphrase whats in there every time someone asks one of those questions, we normally ask that they read the resources first, then we can use this channel to answer any questions they have about the specifics after they've read everything.
1- read the book 2- make Character on d20 3- join open groups
Post that?
You know, the steps
Call me nuts
Took me days to get this answer
Honestly, I agree to some extent, its not the most friendly system in the world, but this server has tens of thousands of members, so we can't guide every single one through the process every step of the way. We're more than happy to fill in any gaps, but we have to ask that people have some base line, to get the ball rolling
And thats what this channel is for, really. It points people in the right direction and gets the ball rolling. You won't get from "Hello, I'm new here" to playing your first game in one conversation. Its just not possible.
Once it is rolling, then you can use #character-discussion or #dnd-rules for more specific questions
It took WotC 180 pages to explain the basic rules. Kind of hard to condense all that into a Discord convo. 😅
Specific questions about specific topics are much easier to answer.
Critical role has some pretty good handbooker helper videos to help out new players ,i suggest checking them out if you want some help, they're short and sweet and informative
Evening all, 52 year old new player who used to play 35+ years ago. Will no doubt as stupid questions for which i am sorry I don't want hand holding through everything just gentle nudges in the right directions.
I am rryi g to get to grips again but please ve patient if I ask dumb questions.
Cheers
I read that new starter helps are pinned somewhere, ease can I ask in which section as I cannot see them
Welcome! There's a pin icon, either at the top of your screen on desktop, or if you swipe left on mobile.

Hi I am new to d&d. I have only been playing for about 6 months. I am looking for a game to play during the next week because I a at home recovering. So Hi!
Use the #looking-for channels to find games - make sure to read the channel description and follow the format when posting as found in the pinned messages.

I am incredibly new to dnd. I have been playing for a little under a week.
I am 100% new here anyone have the time to run me through this?
I created my character and got everything set
Am I ready to play now and how do I start playing...?
First off, you'll need someone to run a game for you. If you head to #750812887697588356 , there's a pinned template where you can ask to join someones game. They'll help you from there.
ok, ill go check it out
Making a character is good practice, but it can be best to just do it to get an idea of how it works and what you'd like to play.
You should wait until you're in a group to make THE character you'll play since individual DMs might run the game pretty differently.
There are tons of great DMs out there who don't mind taking new players under their wing and explaining things.
nice
Question about saving throws and accuracy do I say the roll with out and outside factors?
I read the rule book and everything but I still have no idea what Current hit points and Temp. Hit Points are
What do you mean by outside factors?
All good!
Let’s take a Strength saving throw as an example.
You’d add your Strength modifier to the roll.
If you’re proficient in Strength saving throws — maybe you’re a Fighter, for instance — then you add your proficiency bonus as well.
So let's say I rolled a 5 and had a proficiency bonus of 2 I would have a 7 is that all there is to it?
Other things can give you other bonuses to the roll as well, like the Resistance spell:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/resistance
Plus your ability score modifier, too. (Unless that’s a +0 in this scenario.
Each class is proficient with two different saving throws. You’d only add your proficiency bonus to the ones you’re proficient in.
So a Fighter again…
Saving Throws: Strength, Constitution
Okay so let's see in are previous situation but I had a modifier of 3 would it then be a 10?
They’d add their proficiency to a Strength save, but not to a Wisdom one.
Yep!
And then you compare it to the DC — the Difficulty Class.
If it meets or exceeds the DC, that’s a success.
So is dc like a resistance type of thing?
In a sense.
General speaking, a DC of 10 means it’s an easy task.
15 is medium, 20 is hard.
The DC measures how difficult a thing is, and your roll measures how well you accomplish it.
Hm I see so dc is number required to succeed in a task adding your modifiers and proficiency
Bingo
Alright thanks so much
Temporary hit points are a buffer against damage to your actual hit points. If you take damage, that damage gets subtracted from your temporary hit points first.
can someone teach us lol were new to the game
Welcome! There’s some helpful links in the pinned messages here to get you started, but did you have any specific questions?
im better if someone taught me in a vc lol
Me as well (We are in a group). I have some of the super basics, looking to get a better idea before jumping in completely
No VC for me, I’m afraid. (Busy putting kids to bed.) 😅
Np man 🙂
your fine man
But there’s usually plenty of people around to help. Hopefully someone else can chime in.
Thank you.
By the way I was told I should pick a patron sub class I was wondering what that meant or what the options on that are
I am trying to be a warlock if that helps by the way
Each class has a subclass, a kind of specific specialization. For warlocks, that’s their patron.
Narrative-wise, it’s the person/being that gave you your powers.
And you typically owe them some service or loyalty in return.
A warlock is defined by a pact with an otherworldly being. Sometimes the relationship between warlock and patron is like that of a cleric and a deity, though the beings that serve as patrons for warlocks are not gods. A warlock might lead a cult dedicated to a demon prince, an archdevil, or an utterly alien entity—beings not typically served by clerics. More often, though, the arrangement is similar to that between a master and an apprentice. The warlock learns and grows in power, at the cost of occasional services performed on the patron’s behalf.
Hm what about game play wise are specific abilities locked behind different sub classes/patron's?
Or is it a mainly lore based choice?
The Fiend is the free one included in the Basic Rules:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes/warlock#TheFiend
So you get some devilish abilities.
Cool
Contrast that with the Celestial, which gives you some cleric spells and healing abilities.
The Fathomless gives you watery tentacle stuff.
The Genie has a lot of elemental abilities and basically a magic lamp to hang out in.
Hm is it possible to use something like burning hands in non combat situations like lighting a torch/campfire type of thing?
Sure!
The fire ignites any flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/burning-hands
Might not be the best use of a spell slot, though. 😅
There’s a few fire cantrips that’ll do it for free.
Or you can buy a good ol’ tinder box.
True I might not wanna waste it on a torch then end up needing it later for fighting or something else
Out of curiosity. Say I’m going to meet someone and I wanted to cast the light cantrip on the blade of my long sword to make it glow bright gold for dramatic effect when I unsheathe it. Will the scabbard block the light or will the entire sword glow, including the handle?
When it comes to resolving questions like this, you should start with looking at what the spell says
Spells do what they say they do, nothing more, nothing less
Then you should identify which part of what they say is ambiguous/unclear
Then look to see if the rules define that
Tips for a brand new DM for a pretty new party. Only one persons out of 4 has player before. I haven’t competed a full campaign as a player yet. My wife, my friend, and his wife are starting a fresh one and I’m dming any first timer tips??
First session is this weekend
- Don't be worried about making mistakes (or other people getting things wrong). It's better to rally, come up with a ruling on the fly, and keep things moving forward
- If someone doesn't know how do something, try and guide them through it by asking questions and explaining what you're doing
i.e "Okay, you want to attack? Roll a d20 and tell me the result? Okay, cool. Now what's your strength modifier, the smaller number? That what we add to attacks with that weapon. Cool, good. Now what's your proficiency bonus? We also add that to attacks with weapons you're proficient in"
It can help not just the player learn quickly without getting overwhelmed, but also other players - Don't be afraid to guide the players along the goal of the adventure, especially if you're doing a one shot or short adventure
Yeah I’m not to sure how I’ll guide the players along. I’m kinda hoping we will just eventually get there from role play. I’m already started my prep but hope I’m not over prepping. The adventure is dragon of icespire peak.
You can literally just say "Hey folks, remember that you're here to investigate the haunted mountain. I get that roleplaying shopping is fun, but this session is only 4 hours long so keep that in mind"
Ha right! We will see where it goes. Thanks for the tips!
It helps before the the campaign starts to just let everyone know kind of what to expect. Like "Hey guys, you'll be adventurers in this town doing jobs for gold. You're free to explore, make friends and do other things, but the jobs are fun adventures with treasure and battles."

That depends entirely on the group.
This article covers a few of the different options:

Hello, I'm new to the server...

Welcome welcome! We are happy to have you with us
ok so created my 1st character on dnd beyond, hope i did it right and didnt miss anything. Now to work out how to get in to an online group, wish me luck
thanks @smoky adder no idea what im doing yet but will get there, its all changed since i last played 35+ years ago ha ha ha
I usually play ➡️
thats what ive just created
I will give you a heads up that you might not be able to play the character you made. The steps are usually
- Join a game
- Make a character specifically for that game.
DMs can all run very different games so unless it's an Adventurer's League game which has specific rules, you usually don't make characters ahead of time.
Ahhh didnt know that, oh well back to square 1 then lol
It helps to build them so you understand things still though. I just wanted to set your expectations.
You could definitely play the IDEA of the character you made, but things might need to be adjusted such as stats, backstory, and things like that.
appreciate it, finding this is much tougher to get in to than i remember
Hello, I'm new to the game and I want to know how to play with the app.
Hello is this server more to USA DnD players or International? I work a lot and Live in Scandinavia and am intrested to joining TTRPG games. I have been always passionet about Fantasy games and so but never had a chance to play the game. I see in the LFG tab that there are lots of parties but all are US based....
There is a group that does DnD Adventurer's League in Scandinavia.
like i said i am new so i am just trying to find out where i can find groups to play whit....
I know nothing about DnD but I've always known about it I get it what it is and the very very basics but have never played
Is this a place where I can play with people online?
We've got folks here from all over the world.

I was wondering what does chose a generation method for stats means in dnd?
The old traditional method is to roll the stats, but there are other options. One method is called Standard Array, were you have a set of predetermined numbers: (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) that you place on the stats. So one stat will be bad (the 8) and one will be really great (the 15)
Alright thank you
No problems, it can be a bit much to get at the same time. where was it this question came up, just curios
Here is a link to the section in the basic rules that describes it
Hey everyone! Super new to d n d and excited to start playing
Hello fellow adventurers! I have a little experience with the game but I've never managed to finish a session due to real life obstacles. I've always loved the idea of making my own campaigns and being a sick DM, however I need more sessions under my belt.
Main issue was no one being able to commit to a schedule and groups falling apart after only 1 session.
Hm does anyone know how to get my characters from dnd beyond to roll 20?
I am on mobile by the way it might effect it
Hey can anybody tell me how to make companions In beyond on mobile? I can’t figure it out
Hello y’all new here, DND always looked interesting but never got into it
Really wanna join a campaign through Beyond, made a character but I don’t think he’s any good, as I said I’m new so idk anything :/
If schedules are an issue, look up "play by post (PBP)" games as they typically are slower paced and can fit your random schedule as they tend to be more "post when you are able" within a reasonable timeframe.
Not new to DnD but I have questions about this server. Seems like "general" was the... wrong place to intro. If any mods are helpful, I just have a couple questions.
They are two separate apps so there is no 1st-party way to connect the two. Also most Virtual Tabletops (VTTs) like Roll20 are not optimized for mobile use.
You may be best off having the DM run your token for you and you just relay what you roll and manage your character via DnDBeyond.
I'm not a mod but what questions do you have? Also the #520291181083754516, #880965682462875679, and #frequently-asked-questions cover most of the server rules. I also recommend reading the channel descriptions and checking pinned messages on a channel for further information.
Also this server has #moderator-support if you need immediate moderator assistance
Thank you.
Hey can anybody tell me how to make companions In beyond on mobile? I can’t figure it out
I do not believe that functionality is available in the mobile app at this time. You can check at #ddb-support to confirm.
What exactly do you mean by “companions”?
How can I help?
does any one know how to put homebrew in campaign
On D&D Beyond? Or just in general?
Hello all! It has been many years since I have played, which was version 3.5. I had a lot of fun. I want to get back into it. How much info do you recommend I have to start playing? Read all the books? Know all the rules? I want to start, but I want to be a knowledgeable player.
The basic rules are for free and pinned to this channel. Start there
You dont need to read or know all the stuff
If you want more options and a physical book, I would recommend getting the Players handbook for now
Thanks, I will look at the pinned messages and get started.
@stuck kayak community links should only be shared in #looking-for-community
You cannot create on mobile, only view and use dice. Creating is done solely on website. You can access the website on mobile. I travel a lot for months at a time with only my phone and an IPad. It is super annoying to do on a phone, but possible, much better on an iPad. Hope it helps.
o lol ty
Hey I was wondering what does a staff do I just put it on my character in dnd beyond while making my character but I am struggling to find info on it
Which staff is it? If using DND beyond make sure you install all the free stuff for it will expand available character creation options and add more inventory items to your search
It doesn't have anything special just says staff
Hey uh- this is gonna sound like a really weird question but
Every time I try to look for games I find ones for adults,I'm a minor, are there any servers where I can find like, parties and campaigns with people around my age? Thanks!
Without knowing (or wanting to know) your age, that's impossible to say. But generally speaking you just need to keep looking and asking
Some groups are happy to have people of all ages
Also check out Adventurer's League, that's specifically set up to be as inclusive as possible
Thanks!
Ok thank you so much
Hellow im new to dnd and i am wondering how damage works
Hi as someone who is interested in learning to play a game of Dnd with some friends is there anything I could get to help Learn easier?
Roll to hit. If the roll+modifiers and bonuses meets or beats the target armor class, roll for damage. Then the target creature reduces their Hit points by that much.
Read the free basic rules, watch videos of others playing, then get with a group and learn by playing. Even us experienced players have to reread rules.
When a creature takes damage, that reduces their hit points. You'll need to either hit them with attacks, or catch them with nasty effects like fireballs.
Resistance to a damage type halves damage taken of that type (such as a raging barbarian having resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage - they take only half). Resistances do not stack, it's yes or no.
Immunity is being immune, no damage.
Vulnerability is double damage.
how do i determin modifiers
Ok thanks I have read the dnd beyond rule book and a basic grasp of the game but any suggestions for yt videos to watch?
DnDBeyond will do that for you automatically but generally for a weapon like a sword, you add your strength modifier and proficiency bonus when making attack rolls.
You would have your ability scores, determined at character creation. From those scores you get modifiers. For example, a strength of 16 or 17 gives you a strength modifier of +3. This means, when you make a strength check, strength saving throw, or make an attack such as an unarmed strike or with a melee weapon, you add your +3 to that roll. If you're proficient with something, you add your proficiency bonus to that something.
Dungeon Dudes Dragons of Drakkenheim is pretty good - entertaining and pretty good on following the rules.
Ok thanks I'll check it out
Also, weapon attacks generally use the ability modifier to add to damage as well. But not proficiency bonus.
For example, a level 1 fighter with a longsword is proficient with it, and let's say they have 17 strength for a +3 modifier.
Their proficiency bonus is +2 as they are level 1, so they have a total of +5 to hit when they make attack rolls with their longsword.
If they meet or beat a targets AC with their attack, they hit, and get to roll damage.
Let's say they hold the sword with one hand. So they roll a d8 (an eight sided die) and add their strength modifier (+3) to the result (even going to 9, 10, 11), and that's how much damage they deal.
Some weapons have particular properties, like a Longsword letting you hold it with two hands for an attack, which would let it use a d10 for its damage instead of a d8, or a shortsword with finesse, letting you use dexterity instead of strength.
Remember the rule of the channel; keep things simple and newcomer friendly and avoid overloading people with walls of text or minutiae of rules, okay?
Arcane Focus. An arcane focus is a special item--an orb, a crystal, a rod, a specially constructed staff, a wand-like length of wood, or some similar item--designed to channel the power of arcane spells. A sorcerer, warlock, or wizard can use such an item as a spellcasting focus.

Is there a genuine campaign I can watch somewhere to learn how to play? See everything going on?
iv been watching this play through myself to help get to grips for me and my son to get into D&D but it would help to get into a live game and listen in i think
I can't offer one myself but there are streams on twitch and videos on youtube like^
Streamed D&D is extremely popular. Some of the most popular ones are Critical Role on Youtube and Dimension20 on Droupout
Dimension20 typically puts a bit of a twist on the game, so if you want a more traditional experience, I recommend Critical Role. You should start with Campaign 2, episode 1.
Just keep in mind that the players on these shows are trained professionals. They aren't faking it or anything, but their acting and voice acting skills are incredible, and the show has high levels of production value. Its a great way to get into D&D, and its a super fun show to watch, but don't feel like you need to hold your own games to the same standard that these people play at
Also a lot of the DMs in streamed shows will have house rules which modify how the game plays, so just remember that :)
Question: i used the standard array for my modifiers, and have +3 in charisma, and since I’m a tiefling, do I auto get a +2 bonus from the ability score from being the tiefling race?
+2 to the ability score, yes.
Which results in another +1 to your ability score modifier (for a total of +4).
For any newbies, i am learning how to DM, and me and my little brother are about to run a one shot, does anyone wanna join?
Feel free to post in #looking-for-players if you've got an open seat.
Just make sure to use the post template in the pinned messages there. (Anything not using the template gets removed.)
What is the level of roleplaying your character? How in depth do you get with your character?
Depends on the type of game you're joining. If its a tabletop/voice chat/live game, it will probably be minimal roleplay depth. If it's a text-based Play By Post, players are much more patient and probably expecting a higher level of detail and literacy. I personally prefer Play By Post and usually stick to 3-5 sentences in a post.
Whatever you & your group are comfortable with. You can treat D&D like a board game, like Shakespeare, or anything in between.
hiiii
Good evening everyone! Does anybody know an online store other than dice envy that sells good sets?
Hi I am new to DND and will like to have help playing the game and knowing the rules if anyone could help me with that please and thank you
I never had any interest in D&D until I watched Dimension 20 and got hooked. I know it’s not always straight D&D worlds (e.g. Fantasy High is based on if D&D lore were an 80s style teen movie), but I think it is still really beginner- friendly for D&D. If nothing else it is funny, dramatic, emotional, and all around fantastic story telling. I wanted to start playing because it opened up the idea to me that you could play a game where an amazing story is being told like a book or show, but you are actively part of it and it is open enough that anything can happen.
Also - if you like podcasts or audiobooks- try Not Another D&D Podcast (NADDPOD). You learn a lot about the game and it’s mechanics. And it’s a great story.
Hey, sooo I just downloaded the DNDBeyond app played around with the character builder am 100% sure I probably did it wrong but I wouldn’t mind finding a group or something to get better hmu!

I got mine from Viridian Gaming
Thanks so much! I actually found some I likes, they look enchanted, icy and even glow in the dark 😊😬
I always confused about bonus actions are they an extra action or a seperate category
A separate category.
You only get a bonus action if something says you get one.
And if you have more than one, you have to choose between them.
The name "Bonus Action" has led to confusion. Actions and Bonus Actions are not interchangeable. Think of them as square vs round pegs. You have one square hole and one round hole on your turn. The peg for one cannot go into the hole for the other. And while rules tell you which square pegs(Actions) you can choose from(Attack, Disengage, Dash, etc), most of your round peg(Bonus Action) options are determined by spells you know, class/subclass features, etc. There isn't really a default list of things you can do as a Bonus Action the way there's a standard list of Actions.
tbh I need someone to help me with dnd in general if anybody could do that dm me plz
Can we answer your questions publicly in this channel?
sure
Hello everybody!
sup
hello everybody
Ok then, lay them on us :)
So when it says role play what does it mean by that like do we just talk do some actions or...
hi, do we have to buy the books again or can we just use some serial code from our irl copies?
Most of the game can be described as talking. The Dungeon Master describes the scenario and the players say what they want to do based on that.
There can be social encounters where your character talks to NPCs run by the DM, which often can use the social skills like deception, insight, intimidation and persuasion
There is no code available to unlock books on DDB from your physical copies. You can use the homebrew system to recreate anything you want to use in the character builder as long as you don't share it publicly:)
wow that kinda sucks you have to do it that way
like that makes sense, but damn
i own all the not module books so that'd be a pain
You can also buy piecemeal specific bits on the marketplace for use in the character builder if you don't want to purchase everything again.
For example Player's Handbook stuff is here
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/players-handbook
Whatever you spend on those gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too.
Hello! I'm new here.
Hello! Just joined the server. I've been wanting to play d&d for a long time now, but don't have any friends who have interest in it. I'm still reading the beginner resources. Hopefully I can convince some of my buddies to play (or make new ones!) after I read through them. 😅
I started playing just a few months ago at my local game store. I also don’t have any friends who play (at least that I know of).
Depending on where you live that might be a good option
Good idea. We don't have those kinds of game stores in my country, but I'll see if there are any dnd facebook groups in my city.
hi all....ITS SUNDAY!! GAME DAY!!!
How do you play dnd without the map? or how can i get a map..
Im new and just made a campaign and my friend joined it but how to start?
You can do Theatre of the Mind, where you describe the surroundings verbally and the players imagine it
okay thank you
Hey! I’m extremely new and I’ve been wanting to try and learn to play for a while. Hoping to find some fun campaigns and groups!
There’s some good tips here for playing without maps:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/tag/theater-of-the-mind
Say if a buy a source book from DnD Beyond, do I get both the physical copy and a digital copy with access to all the individual items or just one of either?
Got it, thanks
if anyone wants to join a campaign send me a request and ill add u, make sure to say in this chat that u did tho.
new comers and experienced players are all welcome.

Hey all, newbie here keen to get into DnD and explore the worlds 😇
Welcome aboard!
helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllo
i need some advice
im running a campaign with freinds and since i thought of a setting im the dm anyone got any dm tips for me?
What do you feel like you need the most help with?
im just lacking in stuff like im making a daycare setting were its a distorted dimension and they have to escape but an i wanna make a layout of the daycare for myself to look at where should i make that?
A daycare?
ya its kinda modern setting btw
Are the players all playing children?
well im one of them
two of em and the oldest js is a daycare worker lol
heh?
Are you sure DnD is the best system for this?
jk i am a child
yes they have to escape
im not creating a game its just with my freinds
I mean there are other RPG systems.
?
Like Kids on Bikes
are there any digital apps u could reccomend so i could make a floor layout
thanks for that help btw ima read that later
but does anyone have an art app or anything like that, that they could reccomend im trying to make a floor layout
Are you looking for an app on mobile or pc?
I use dungeondraft on the PC. Costs $20 but it makes very pretty maps. There are free options online for randomly generating or drawing dungeons
Dungeondraft is fantastic
Hi guys, i hear a lot of talk about "we're doing curse of strahd" or "we're doing forgotten realms". I understand that these are pre-written settings, but to what level? Does the DM follow a story from a book? Or do they just create their own in that setting?
Curse of Strahd is a pre-written horror adventure. It features a full story to play from levels 1-10 and takes place in its own setting called Barovia.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/adventures/curse-of-strahd
The Forgotten Realms is the default campaign setting for the fifth edition of D&D, and many other adventure books are set in this location.
A lot of what’s written in the Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Guide are written primarily with The Forgotten Realms in mind.
And it’s described in much more detail in The Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide. This is a setting book, which describes the world. It does not include a pre-written adventure (though some other setting guides do).
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/sword-coast-adventurers-guide
I see, thank you for the response. I've been running a 1-shot (which has turned into a 3 shot lmao), with a homebrew setting/world, but i use the current monster manual to get my encounters up and running. The idea was to test out being a DM and to see if my players enjoyed it enough to turn it into a campaign, with the 1 shot being the 'prologue' per se. Just wondering if I should look into any of the other books for more stuff I could integrate into my own world like unique monsters
Yeah, any of the pre-written adventures can generally be adapted to fit a world of your own, with a little effort.
Or if it’s only monsters you’re after, you can buy them individually. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, in case you want to get the rest later.
Lost Mine of Phandelver is one adventure set in the Forgotten Realms. It’s available for free if you want to get an idea of what the adventure books are like:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
I'll look through it now, much appreciated! At the moment yea I'm just struggling with my monsters a bit. I don't really feel experienced enough to homebrew monster stat blocks and spells so i've been doing little things like changing damage types on their abilities and stuff to fit the theme a bit more.
Honestly, that’s a pro move right there.
Reflavoring the existing monsters gives you so much flexibility.
Does anybody have an emoji pack for D&D on discord?
That's not really a question for this channel. Probably more suited for #dnd-discussion
Hello all. I'm wondering if anyone had any helpful tips for running a game for kids. I have never played before, but my kids (11, 8, and 6) are very excited to jump in. We also have Amazing Tales, but we saw the Starter Kit at our local game store and they wanted to give it a try.
Adventure Begins is a D&D intro board game for kids.
Dungeons & Dragons Adventure Begins, Cooperative Fantasy Board Game, Fast Entry to The World of D&D, Family Game for 2-4 Players, 10 and Up https://a.co/108CT3s
My six-year-old plays a celestial warlock, which turned out pretty well.
They only ever have spell slots of a single level, which keeps things simple.
I've run D&D for some niblings of about the 6-10 age range and I've found you can guide them through the fundamentals of D&D fairly easy without much modification
And I put together a little kit to help her keep track of things. She's got plastic diamonds for her spell slots, and little glass beads to track her Healing Light ability.
And then I printed out some cards for her to track her spells and race/class features.
She LOVED doing all the artwork for them.
Hi everyone! I'm absolutely new to D&D and I've only played once with my classmates...I wonder if I can play D&D online? I don't quite understand the system...I hope I can find help! Thanks!!
it's free on steam
If you're looking for a kid-friendly adventure, I'd suggest Wild Beyond the Witchlight, too.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/adventures/the-wild-beyond-the-witchlight
Pretty sure they mean an online game of D&D, not D&D Online.
There's a good article here that covers some of the available options.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/750-new-players-guide-how-to-play-d-d-online
thanks!
I love the idea of have little bits and bobs to help keep track of things!
Thanks for the help! The beasties are really excited to play. My 11 yo LOVES the dice and keeps trying to convince me that he needs more. 😆
Oh! Get a dice tower, too. You should be able to find one for < $20 if you want to keep it cheap.
But then you don't have to worry about them chucking their dice across the room and having to pause the game to find it again. 😂
My husband has a small 3d printer. I'd bet there is probably a file we can get from Thingiverse to make one. I did get a dice tray to help contain rolls, but a tower would be much more fun.
The one we got was clearly 3D-printed.
In "paintable white" so she could give it a personal touch.
So uh how do I play this games cuz I'm new to it
Welcome! There’s a few helpful links in the pinned messages here to get you started.

Reading the Starter Set Rulebook...how do y'all remember all of this?!
A lot of it comes with practice.
But plenty of times, you don't need to remember the rule. You just need to remember where to find it. 😅
D&D is a group effort, too. If you don't have an answer, someone else at the table might.
And regardless of how well anyone thinks they know the rules, they can and will make mistakes. As long as the group is having fun and the game keeps going, its fine to agree on a ruling of your own in the moment if needed.
And when all else fails, you can just ask in #dnd-rules. 😉
Knowing generally where to find a rule is much more useful than memorizing them all. (That’s why they’re written down!) Especially since nobody knows all the rules and remembers them perfectly all the time.
For example, the rules for Hiding are in the Ability Score chapter, under Dexterity.
That's all you need to know until it's time to hide.
What is usually used in most campaigns? Story-based or xp-based progression?
These books should come with ribbon bookmarks attached to make looking things up faster. 😆
Most of the pre-written adventures nowadays use story-based advancement.
So the xp one is more for homebrewed
XP is pretty common in things like West Marches.
There's no right or wrong answer, though. You're free to use whichever one your group enjoys more.
In my experience, the two upsides to XP-based leveling is it gives players a sense of how close they are to leveling up, and it gives the DM a way to reward players for individual achievements like good role-playing. The major downside is that having players level up at different times can make the group dynamic complicated, especially if it's a group that hasn't been together very long. Players who might not be as outgoing and assertive may fall behind because they don't have as many of those standout moments. These days I think it's more common to use story-based or "milestone" leveling, and have the DM give out Inspiration as a reward for exceptional play.
hi everone im new to dnd and ive just created a charcter and i was wondering how do i play with someone cause i dont have freinds to play dnd with

so i clicked the standard mode for character building and it has like a lot of option things does it really matter how i adjust it or am i allowed to change it later on
You're able to change stuff later on freely, it's a character customizer so do whatever you want to do
OH OKAY
yes it matters greatly
THANK YOU
kaleo I've got a little question that I think is very pertinent for new players because this is a complicated game and it's important to set expectations appropriately (it's why we have session 0s), what do you know about DnD?
good question..
i know that its like a story game, theres a story teller and theres some monsters..... i kind of know like nothing but
im willing to learn.........
okay that's a good start. story teller might be a misnomer depending on. Usually the term is DM, and they're there to make sure the game actually has any structure. Yes they write the story, but when you're roleplaying you also write the story. What got you interested in it? I would never have played DnD if I didn't have my dad DMing for me when I was a kid
One of the things i see a lot of new players come to the table with is the desire to make a "good character" and that's fine but DnD doesn't play like a video game, you're not necessarily meant to win every encounter and you're playing with your friends, or at the very least people you're being friendly with
I say this cause I saw you ask if there was a race better than elves, and while the answer is probably yes, the better answer is "for doing what?"
it's great if you want to approach every encounter like a puzzle you can solve but there's usually more to the game than that, and other people won't be able to anticipate how your particular experience is going to play out
me and my friends talked about playing it ahahah theyre actually in this server
OH KOSMO..GOOD TIMING
im the friend ahhhahaha
i know theyres a dungeon master and campaigns and
yeaha
i have a group of friends that wanna play and i was nominated to dm. I do not have much knowledge on how to dm. i have a story in my head although i do not have the mechanical skill to host a game on the website
that's a great start
DMing is really hard or really easy depending on who you ask
I say hard but I'm also a big rules stickler
if your group plays fast and loose then you can just buy a module and read what it tells you to do and then improv everything
anyone need a member?
Hello! My name is Christian and im very new to the game. i have watched d&d playthus but never actually played. i would love to be apart of a campaign.

It is much easier these days with Google and digital/searchable archives. Makes finding rules much easier when you Google Fu is as on point as your monk.
D&D Beyond is the new tool for our group! I got the master tier so I could share content with them. Now we can Search it all.
Google is of course helpful, but sometimes you can get weird homebrew rules or sites that don’t give you full descriptions. Doesn’t happen often in my experience, but definitely has happened to us.
I am still pretty new to DnD beyond and have a bunch of physical copy of books is there any way I can claim them on DnD beyond so i dont have to buy the same copies on there too?
hello im still on character building and on stage 3 (abilities) umm do i need to adjust anything on there like the things that say Other Modifier and Override Score
Those are typically used for temporary changes during gameplay, like the effects of a shadow’s Strength Drain ability.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/monsters/17010-shadow
I’m afraid not, but you can use DDB’s homebrew tools to recreate that content for free (for private use only, though; please don’t publish it).
Alternatively, you can buy just the parts you need, like a single subclass. Whatever you spend gets credited toward the cost of the book itself, too.
so should i just leave it for now??
Yeah
Just fill out the six ability scores at the top, and you should be good.
(If you don’t see six ability scores at the top, you’ll need to select an option from the dropdown there first.)
“Choose a Generation Method”
is there any plans in the near future to make it possible to do this?
to add physical copies that is
Not as far as they’ve said.
ok thank you
Do I add my modifier to cantrips or spells
not unless something says so.
For example:
Fire Bolt just says it does 1d10, (or more if you're a high enough total character level) so it just does that 1d10, be it 1 or 10.
Eldritch Blast also does 1d10. But a Warlock can gain a feature that lets them add their charisma modifier to the damage of eldritch blast, making it deal 1d10 + their charisma modifier.
Also about the pact of the tome can I use arcane focus to replace the gold cost/ink thing for the ritual?
no.
Rip
even if you wanted to, foci only replace material components of spells that don't have a gold cost.
the ritual copying A) isn't a spell and B) has a gold cost, so you still couldn't do it even if A wasn't true
can someone message me real quick I wanna show someone my first character sheet
We have a channel dedicated to that; #character-discussion

hello
i am new to d&d
i wanna start playing regularly and i need some help
can anyone help me?
it depends what kind of help you need cus like do you know what the game is?
yes i do but idk how to play it online annd stuff
idk how to make character sheets either
there are a lot of YouTube video's about all of those stuff
sorry I dont really know either
oh thats okay
We have a load of links pinned in this channel with useful information on getting started, including how to make a character and how to play online
Hey guys i want to become a dm but what do i need to do to become one
All you need is some players and a copy of the basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/souces/basic-rules
That's all you need to get started, you can literally just kick off and make stuff up on the fly
If you want an adventure to run, Lost Mine of Phandelver is free on D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Oke but how do we play online cuz i Saw i need to pay to make a campain
You don't need to pay to make a campaign
To play online, you just need a way to communicate with your players, such as discord
everything can be done via either voice or text through description, commonly called Theatre of the Mind
But if you check out the pinned links, there's loads of information on getting started, including playing online
Oke thx
hum didnt know that. sweet.
Are there free adventures in the store cuz i cant findt one
I linked you to one, Lost Mine of Phandelver is free on D&D Beyond: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/lmop
Oke yeah but how do i make a campain out of it 😂😅
You gather some players and start running it by reading through the adventure
Is there a map or something?
There are maps in the adventure, yeah
You can describe them to your players, or share them via discord, or use something called a virtual tabletop (VTT) to share it and allow them to place tokens
There are many out there, you'll have to look around and see what suits your needs
Some are free, some have subscriptions, so you buy up front
Some work on mobile devices, most do not
Yep
I didn't know that lol
Owlbear.rodeo is free and simple. It's what I use
How can i do the lost mine of phandelver into roll20
You can get the maps from dndbeyond and then upload them into roll20. Then you can use the compendium on dndbeyond to run the adventure for some friends. Though, if you're doing that I'd go with owlbear.rodeo (free, simple, works on mobile, only does maps and tokens and dice) and run the character sheets through dndbeyond
Oke thx
ya you betcha! Good luck!
Thx you too man
How do I join a campaign?

Hi guys, I've made my character using Beyond and the sheet says I'm encumbered. I'm carrying 99lbs (all starting equipment nothing added by myself) but my character is encumbered at 60lbs. Reading the basic rules it says encumbrance is strength x 15 and my strength is 12+1 so shouldn't encumbrance weight be 180lbs?
Hi, could you post a link to your character sheet so I can see what might be happening?
Ah I see. It looks like you have enabled the variant rule for encumbrance on your settings page
Standard encumbrance is 15xStr but variant encumbrance is only 5xStr
so if you are not playing with that variant rule, you'll just need to change that setting
Ah I see thank you, I presume settings such as that are set by the DM as campaign rules
Correct. Things like which Encumberance formula, XP vs Milestone leveling etc. are generally set by the DM, or by group consensus.
OK worrying for nothing lol thanks guys
they are set by the DM in an out of game sense. Meaning the DM decides what you are doing, and tells each player what settings to use. They do not control the settings on your character sheet on the actual website
It is entirely possible that you enabled Variant Encumbrance by mistake. I know many beginners see that for the first time and think it just refers to whether or not you are using encumbrance at all.
I was messing around with a few settings in the builder seeing what happened if anything at all I just left it on that setting instead of going back without thinking
glad we got that sorted out
Yes thanks just need to find a game now 👍
On DNDBeyond? You can follow people. It's pretty close. You just go to their profile and look to the right side.
OH okay
wait how do i find their profile
like bc my friend and i are planning to play and idk how to find their profile
I've always found profiles through shared campaigns. You can also click on them in the forums, I believe.
Easiest thing to do in that case would likely be to setup a campaign (under collections) and send them a link to join. You'll be able to see each others characters and profiles there.
alright thank you
My privilege!
What are the starting numbers for ability scores
There’s three different ways to determine ability scores.
Usually your DM will tell you which method to use.
But there’s…
- Rolling - Roll 4d6 and keep the highest 3. Repeat six times and assign as you like.
- The Standard Array - A specific set of six numbers you can assign as you like.
- Point Buy - each score starts with 8, then you get 27 points you can spend to increase them. (It costs two points each to go to 14 and 15.)
i think he usually dose standard array so do you know the numbers for that
or is it different for each campaign
You can find the full rules for each of those here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/step-by-step-characters#3DetermineAbilityScores
thank you
If they haven’t told you which to use yet, the standard array is probably the safest choice.

I'm looking to get into dnd, which is something I've been meaning to do for a while now. Could someone give me like a summary of all the stuff I need to know to be ready to start playing, and best place to learn it?
The Basic Rules are available for free on the D&D Beyond website at https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules, they cover all of the mechanics of the game, they just don't have all of the character options offered in the full Players Handbook.
Check the pins! Lots of good resources. I also recommend youtube videos since it makes some of this more digestible.
I've trying to get into dnd and would like to start playing online sessions. I would like to know what I need to get started and play.
You will need access to at least the free Basic Rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules), a character sheet, dice (digital or real), and a group of other people to play with (one of whom would be the Dungeon Master who sets the scene and decides what rules are in effect and what dice rolls are needed and just generally guides the game).
See the pinned messages here in the channel for more useful links to help get you started.
Thank you
You can start as soon as you find or start a group. That can be instantaneous if you're very lucky, but usually it takes a little while (say a few days or weeks)
Hello, I am completely new to the game and I have no idea what I'm doing but I would like to try and get started. I'm going to head off for now but if anyone has advice to share I would be grateful to hear it when I'm back.
Best place to start would be the links pinned in this channel; there's a lot of useful information for getting started, including the Basic Rules

Hi. I am new to dnd, I was just wondering how to make a good character and background.
A good character is really any character you like playing, which can do what you want, so try and think of an appealing character concept in your head then you can start thinking how this may affect your characters background, to actually create it use the character mancer on roll20 or dndbeyobd is probably the best idea
Ok. I'll try it out, thank you.
If you do come up with an idea for a character asking for accompanying backgrounds here is probably best, for example a character who does water stuff may have the swashbuckler background
Did you have any concepts in mind already?
What's a cool character moment you want to have?
I was thinking of a woodland character, that's village got burnt down and had to survive on its own at a young age. But is terrified of fire because of the tragic event in their past.
Sounds like a good start!
If it was my character, I'd almost just leave it at that. Let my DM fill in the "who" and "why" the village burned.
Ok.
And then tie the fact I had to survive on own into my character's current abilities.
Did they survive by taming or embracing the wilds? Could be a druid or ranger.
Did they survive by learning to fight? Or with the help of a spellbook they found?
Yeah that makes the backgrounds outlander or hermit likely
Ranger sounds fun.
Go for it
What would be the best way for ability scores though?
Usually that's up to your DM.
If you don't have a DM yet, I'd suggest starting with Standard Array or Point Buy.
ok
Also are you starting at level 1 or higher
I am just making them level 1. Or should I do a higher level character?
That's also usually a DM decision.
ok
Yeah I was just going to say if you’re starting on level 3 or higher you get to pick a ranger archetype and develop your character more
With more capabilities and such
What ability score should I have the lowest?
The Quick Build for a ranger says this:
You can make a ranger quickly by following these suggestions. First, make Dexterity your highest ability score, followed by Wisdom. (Some rangers who focus on two-weapon fighting make Strength higher than Dexterity.) Second, choose the outlander background.
(Also if you want to but this is often up to dm discretion since they’re banned, you could pick variant human as a race since it gives you a free feat that you can use to develop your character more)
You're free to listen to or ignore it as you see fit.
But I'd probably put CHA or INT lowest.
CHA for a lack of social skills because they grew up in isolation.
Or INT because they grew up without any formal education, just their own self-taught knowledge and skills.
(And mostly because you'll need the other stats more than those two. 🤣)
Ok, I think that ill do INT because there education was cut short by there village being burnt down.
FWIW, a 10 would be considered an average intelligence.
So it's not that they're un-intelligent.
And not that they can't know things or still be played intelligently.
An 8 would just mean there's gaps in that knowledge.
They just aren’t the sharpest arrow in the quiver
ok, can I post images here?
You can post a link to an image.
But image uploads are only enabled in a couple channels with their own specific needs.
Newbie character question (wasn't sure if I should post here or in Character Discussion). I was looking at The Wild Beyond the Witchlight after a recommendation from @smoky adder that it might be a good one to run with my kids. I understand that fairies were introduced as a playable race in that adventure. Could I potentially let my daughter go through LMoP as a fairy? I know she would love it, but would she be more likely die during the first encounter? Still wrapping my head around the rules and such. We will eventually get to Witchlight (which sounds like a ton of fun!), but the boys are really excited about Phandelver so we're doing that one first since I already have it.
can you view the character?
@lyric fjordAll race options are balanced equally so there's nothing about the fairy race that would put at her at a disadvantage for the Lost Mines adventure compared to any other race
This is a link to the character builder which people won't be able to vew
I can view it here, though: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/80207897
So is that how I should the stats then?
My daughter happened to pick a fairy, too. 😂
Awesome, thank you! I wasn't sure if there would be some kind of disadvantage for her being out of the Feywild or something. I guess that's fantasy worlds overlapping in my head.
She wanted to be a fairy, a unicorn, or a mermaid.
In the end, she got a fairy with the spell Alter Self so she can turn into a mermaid.
And we renamed the spell to "Makeover". 🤣
D&D isn't that punishing or granular
Yeah, looks good!
That's perfect! My daughter created a character for Amazing Tales that was a "rainbow fairy queen with plant powers that destroys her enemies by making large plants grow inside them." 😶 She also has a cat companion. 😆
She has a far better imagination than I do.
BTW, you can buy just the Fairy race by itself if that's all you need for now.
Whatever you spend gets credited toward the remaining cost of the book itself, too.
Neat! I'll look into that. I was considering getting the Witchlight module for Christmas as a together gift. At the rate we're going it will take us that long to get through Phandelver.
Actually, I guess the individual purchase is in another book, so it's that book that would be discounted:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/marketplace/sourcebooks/mordenkainen-presents-monsters-of-the-multiverse
I was looking into that book as well, so it works out either way.
what faith should I have for my character?
That's a good conversation to have with your DM, because the available options might depend on your party's game setting.
ok
