If you get far enough there is a portal from the ashlands that works

solar plaza
#

You can enable it in world settings, but it ain't how the game is supposed to be played.

polar mulch
#

It can transport anything

solar plaza
#

And yeah the port from ashlands too

#

But that's way later tho

There is gonna be a new biome in the next update

hasty geyser
#

How much area do i need to have as a stone floor for comfort items later on?

pliant hatch
#

If you use some tricks, I think a 6 x 6 m area would do.
But the floor with your bed will be quite cramped.

hasty geyser
#

I have a wood floor too for any items that dont need a stone floor

#

Its more that I dont want to stone this full floor because it all needs iron beams

wintry arrow
#

Hello. Where can I search for players on the server?

wintry arrow
#

Thank you very much

pliant hatch
#

What I did for my main building was using 3 - 4 standing iron beams covered with the stone collomn for looks to support the floor. For the horizontal part I used the 2x2m iron grate set halfway the last row of stones, then expanded all over the area, with the exception of where I had the staircase.
Since that grate was both supported by the wall and the iron beams, I was able to get enough support all over the building for the entire floor.

Plus, because I started it halfway the stone wall piece, the grid was completely covered inside the floor pieces, making it a great support.

#

For looks, I also used the stone arches, branching out from the top of the collomn and the walls under the floor to give some extra support.

hasty geyser
#

Yeah I thought about doing that but I dont mind having this floor wood, It's not got great support because I used the small blocks and also raised my foundation to have a basement kinda thing

#

Gods, if the ashlands dvergr can't be taught to avoid the lava, at least make them immune to it so they don't self-destruct constantly

lone rampart
heady parcel

I had this two-star guy running around near my base keeping blobs and stuff away from me, loved him. But he, of course, couldn't stay out of the damn lava so he's history. Sigh.

pliant hatch
heady parcel
#

Starting to experiment a bit with grausten building. Not sure I like it, walls and floors look a bit too plain and smooth, and there seems to be a fair bit of build pieces that should exist but are just missing

#

Roofs look cool but seem very messy to get right

tacit crystal
#

You can make nice details with the pillar parts.

heady parcel
#

Yeah, I'm thinking a stone house with the upper floor in grausten, with wooden beams to break up the grey, that might look nice

pliant hatch
#

Hmmmm. Sounds familiar. 😄

heady parcel
#

But are there really no 1-meter high wall pieces? And ways to fit walls around arches? The "grausten wall arch" doesnt seem to fit with anything. This is all very confusing...

#

Right, the wall piece fits the big arch, but there's noting for the smaller arch I guess

pliant hatch
#

There's plenty of 1m high stone, Black Marble and (ash)wood building pieces.
And arches do fit, you just need to keep a good eye at the snap point and occasionally disable the auto snapping for one of the other points.

heady parcel
pliant hatch
#

All build pieces are unlocked the moment you pick up the material.
So if you don't see 1m Grausten pieces, they aren't there.

heady parcel
#

Frustrating since I want to make a 3 meter high wall hehe, if use a snap point to phase one section half way into the first it doesn't look good

barren whale
#

no 1m pieces, though there's a simple Gizmo mod that lets you rotate in 3d and then you can get 1m high by rotating the existing 1x2 piece 90 deg

#

I'd recommend building the first layer out of stone 1x1 and then clipping grausten into the ground to replace it

heady parcel
#

Nah, no mods for me. I'll work around it somehow. Guess it will have to be a 6 meter high wall instead with two floors

fossil delta
#

One of, and probably the biggest, reasons I stopped building a lot is because of how monotonous the basic build materials look. So it then took me a lot more additional mats to make all the walls stop driving me bonkers. Which won't be bad once we get past 1.0 and I start using dev commands and mods for building. Just while I actually go out and gather my mats the hard way, yeah, I stopped doing big builds. I keep things relatively small, so mats I'm going to gather any ways are all I need to break up the monotony.

hasty geyser
#

the mats are killing me, it was easier farming a full boat of iron

heady parcel
#

Right now I'm getting annoyed that there is no small wall arch section, so there is no way to use the small grausten arch other than as a free-standing arch, which is a very odd thing to do. So there's this gorgeous arched door, but no way to make an arched opening that will fit it. (Yes, there is in ashwood, but dangit I'm building in stone here. Aaargh!)

topaz steppe

just to double check this version of valheim does have the bears and all that stuff right?

heady parcel

What other version would there be?

crimson trench

If your on Steam you should have the newest version by default.

nocturne wolf
#

Call to Arms has been out of public testing for a few months now

crimson trench

okay thats what i was double checking

#

i dont need to be on beta to play it

fossil delta
#

If you were in ptb, you still need to manually exit ptb.

#

I forgot to do that after Mistalnds. That was fun to figure out. 😄

merry pebble
#

The ptb should currently be the same version as live branch iirc 🤔

nocturne wolf
#

small patches don't always go through public testing and you could miss one by staying on that branch

fossil delta
merry pebble
#

Oh, you do always have to do it manually if you want to switch from one branch to the other 🙂
I was just saying that currently the version on both the branches is the exact same

fossil delta
#

This was like a year after Mistlands left beta. I was initially assuming it should have auto updated to the newest version, then I realized it was still in the play test.

Yeah, I am often well on my way to filling a second BM chest with Black metal, but I have never needed all that many chests for storing my mats.

barren whale

yeah i've only ever filled up a little over 100

heady parcel
#

Bloody hell Ashlands is dark at night. It's always dark, but fudge this. The only thing I see is patches of lava glowing and the odd starred charred shining like a beacon

fossil delta
#

Yeah, it does get pretty dark. I usually don't travel around at night because of that. I'm old, so have lost my night vision.

heady parcel
fossil delta
#

I use the dvergr circlet to help with that issue, but not always.

heady parcel
#

I use that when building at night, but when out and about I use the wisplight actually. So I don't lose my helmet

tacit crystal

I'm more comfortable in Ashlands during night than Mistlands during night.

It's only temporary, wisp comes off at dawn, and there's always the troll mead if I need to carry anything in the dark

ivory lantern

I died to a tree and not the siege that happened like 5 minutes ago

I'll be so happy when I finally move into my new base, I think I've been building it over a week lmao

fossil delta
#

Sounds like a massive base. I build mine over time. So build my house first, then expand it out as needed as I progress. So I have no idea how much time, over all, I put into building my bases. 😄 This time was rather easy though, since I just took over a draugr village, so just did a lot of repairing, then put up my walls.

hasty geyser
fossil delta
#

Oh, yeah, first time around was a huge challenge for me. Sometimes I go visit my first house, and still get amazed at how ugly it was. 😄 Even my second house was ugly, but I have since rebuilt that one, once I knew better.

I like my wood house I make but this is my first build with stone, I fear I may noit have enough stability for my roof but we'll see

My first house isn't even fit for wolves. 😄 Its bad. Well, my roofing is bad. I now know how to properly connect them, etc...

Working on my first tame this playthrough, time to get an asksvin farm going, hunting those pests is way too dangerous to farm sustainable amounts of meat

Killing one is not really a problem, but they rarely come without a cohort of charred and the odd boneroller/flying screecher

I felt that way too. Now I just don't want to go out there and kill 200 other mobs just to get Asksvin mats.

Is there a door, and proper flooring, or is it all dirt and open?

ivory lantern

oh my that raised the dirt to above my floor

hmm

well don't do that again got it

fossil delta
#

Yeah, that was what I was guessing. Hence my question.

ivory lantern
#

huh

#

i just put a half wall above the door

fossil delta
#

I was guessing you raised the dirt too much for the door height.

#

Which is why I brought up the dirt.

lone rampart
#

the standard door is only barely tall enough to let our vikings in and out unimpeded. That's why I tend to use gates for all my builds.

fossil delta
#

I do prefer gates, but mainly just because they are stronger, and I have had unwanted mobs come knocking on my doors.

merry pebble
fossil delta
#

Now a days I do gates because I know I will eventually be using the iron gates. So I build with that in mind.

merry pebble
#

I dont usually do big builds so only place gates might get used is defense walls, if i decide to make them.

fossil delta
#

I just love them, and how they sound when you open/close them. I am talking the iron/wood gates, not the pure iron version.

cedar stump
#

Didn't play for months, we ventured towards the queen and we got her! Long fight tho ooof

fossil delta

Yeah, she can be a tough one. I've gotten her down to under 10 minutes, but it took a lot of fights to learn how to handle her that quickly.

cedar stump

Our weapons kinda sucked i think took at least 20m i think lol

fossil delta

Plus I am talking solo times. With my wife we take her down a couple of minutes faster than that.

cedar stump

Now im hanging my black metal sword and going mage

fossil delta

Like I said though, I fought her at least 10 times before I got her down to under 10 minutes.

I wanted to do mage but I didnt feel like leveling before getting to the queen

tacit crystal

Heh, Krom is actually the most metal hungry weapon, even more than Silver sword.

Nope.

nocturne wolf

first time weve seen an ashland biome was random af when looking for queen and we got anhiliated by those water monsters

I think the next boss is a push over, aside from his one very over powered attack. Get rid of that and he is a marshmallow.

fossil delta

True. You need metals.

ivory lantern

will it work to just kill them in leather armor

fossil delta
#

Yeah, plus as good shield, and the flint axe works fine.

#

You could also use fire arrows and flint arrows, but that just takes longer.

#

I use the tower shield and flint axe. I usually beat him in a few minutes.

ivory lantern
#

do regular arrows not work?

fossil delta
#

Just wood? Yeah, they work, just the least amount of damage is all.

merry pebble
#

For Eik they are quite enough 😄

fossil delta
#

It will go fastest with shield and a weapon. I use the flint axe.

#

Oh, and tower shield, since most people love to parry.

#

Tower Shields only block, if you don't realize that yet.

ivory lantern
#

i have a level 3 flint axe

fossil delta
#

Perfect. As far as I am concerned.

#

Now just make whichever shield you prefer, and you should do just fine.

ivory lantern
#

oh yeah and my axe skill is at lvl 10

#

yeah I think I'll do fine

fossil delta
#

Higher would be better, it always is, but you can still do it well enough.

craggy canopy

robert how far are you

fossil delta
craggy canopy
#

ok

tacit crystal
fossil delta
#

Yep. I go relatively slow, so my skill is usually close to 30 by the time I want to defeat Eikthyr. So you just won't beat him as fast as I would, but you will still beat him.

pliant hatch
#

Also: the game is designed to be able to defeat all bosses without a single point in a skill.

ivory lantern
#

Oh

#

nice!

tacit crystal
#

And quality 1 weapons/armor of the biome.

pliant hatch
#

Doesn't mean it's easy without a point in a skill, but it's doable. The skills only give some benefits for the use of the weapons.

fossil delta
ivory lantern

i haven't used a shield at all my whole playthrough

I was on a bit lowish foods, I think that was more the case. 160 health is a bit low when trying to block a starred thing in Ashlands

Especially the heavy hitters

That is a bit low. Not sure how I would do even with a BM shield in that case.

Usually same. I want the trophy for my house 😄

fossil delta

Its why I fight every boss twice, unless I am trying a zero death run.

pliant hatch

I'm just preparing for just that. The trophy for myself.

Except this time I'm going to make it a very short fight.
Got Dead Raiser and Protection staff at tier 3, got the ember staff at tier 1.

I don't think this fight will last long. 😄

About 10 seconds, I think. 😄

fossil delta
pliant hatch
fossil delta
#

Yeah, she is still the most difficult fight even on standard, in my book.

pliant hatch
#

Well, it took me 4 fireballs, 1 hit of a skellie and 6 second to deal with him.

Next: The Elder. 🙂

#

I think I'm going to let the skellies do the fight that time. At least it'll be a bit more fun to watch.

fossil delta
#

They should still kill him pretty quick. Again, I just don't know, since I have never used those settings.

ivory lantern
#

I just beat him

#

that was pretty easy actually

fossil delta
merry pebble
pliant hatch
#

The fireballs and the fire dot already removed about 90-95% of his health.
So in regards of that I didn't even need the skellies.

But it was fun for as long as it lasted.

As for the settings, bosses got a bit more HP and hit harder iirc.
While player hits for less.

That's not really a problem with Eik and the Elder. But from Boneblob on things will be a bit harder.
With Yag and the Queen being quite a PitA. One due to his spells, one due to the minions she keeps summoning.

And what I also discovered: Queen is able to demolish her lair now.

fossil delta
merry pebble
#

True true 😄

heady parcel

I think Eik is a perfect first/tutorial boss. He looks cool, he sounds cool and he will destroy players who haven't even grasped the basics of eating food and combat. But anyone who has learned the basics won't have any problems.

fossil delta

3 is plenty, though. You can build a bench when you need to repair them. Which is easy to do in the case of copper.

exotic hornet
#

I use the bone pickaxes through the swamp and skip copper

pliant hatch
#

Right. Skellies don't work against the Elder.
They're too distracted by one of his attacks.
(Can't say anything because of spoilers)

fossil delta
#

I can guess which one. Probably.

pliant hatch
#

What's worse, he also destroyed part of my portal hub.
So I have to rebuild that. 🙁

#

Lesson learned: Don't fight a boss when his altar is above your portal hub.

nocturne wolf
pliant hatch
#

Yup.

That's called Dwarven logic. 😄

#

But the underlying thought:

The Elder is a boss someone will encounter sooner as the moment the skellies can be summoned.
So while the skellies are somewhat a spoiler, it's something in a far future, while the Elder fight isn't.

fossil delta

I guess I'm a dwarf, I get that logic.

It's a sandbox survival game. Some compare it to Enshrouded and Minecraft and those two have similarities with Valheim.
One of the things Valheim does different is that you will have to defeat a boss to process on to the next biome; but at the same time there's tricks and glitches that makes it possible to skip some steps of the progress. With the exception of one boss.

It offers challenges, especially when you enter a new biome, but the game is also set up that you should be able to defeat a biome's boss with the first tier of that biome's armor and weapons. And even without having a skill in the weapons you use.

placid delta
# clear hazel Any tips when to shift from single item foods to feast items?

We started using the Meadows Feast as soon as we could.
-- 1 Stm 1 Health 1 Meadow Feast
Then we moved to the Swamp Feast
-- 1 Stm 1 Health 1 Swamp Feast
and so on and so on ...
This worked well for our group as we tended to return home every other night.
There would be a feast on the table and we would only carry 2 foods on us (this freed up a limited inventory slot)

clear hazel
#

Although the feast stats are not as great as single item foods right? So it's an interesting trade off.

#

I've got the tray but I'll need to search the wiki page to work out how to craft the feasts. It seems like it involves combining every food from a particular biome but there's also feasts that mix between different biomes.

barren whale
#

depends on what you're building up for

At swamp state you could easily survive having constantly all first 3 feasts. With them your stats are 130 HP and 155 stamina.
I've used HFS setup regularly in later biomes (from mountain/plains) for having nice balanced stats, sometimes HFF for more HP but fair amount of stamina.
The benefit for using feasts is also saving item slot per feast used as you don't need to carry as many foods with you, only to refresh the regular foods.

As far as "games still being worked on" go it feels like a very complete experience. My biggest recommendation is: play it with friends. The main adventure is a good time but the best times I've had - and I know how cheesy this sounds - were the adventures along the way.

tacit crystal
# keen cloud hi guys! im new here, I am planning to buy valheim. is it worth it?

It depends a lot of if you've played survival games before.
Valheim is sandbox survival with procedurally generated worlds (each seed generates different world) and it has linear progression direction (gather materials, craft, make foods, kill boss, enter next biome, repeat). You can also build fine halls, castles or just smaller bases, all up to you.
One significant difference compared to many other survival games is that in Valheim you don't need to sleep/eat/drink to keep yourself alive, rather there are different food items that grant you different stats (HP/stamina) which helps you survive better.
Valheim is balanced around solo play experience but co-op is also fun with close friends.

I did that on my other world, I made a raised platform and built a simple wooden barn around them. fossil delta
heady parcel
#

As far as blocking goes - as in NOT parrying but just soaking the hit in a block pose - it is genuinely useless to block with any weapon. Blocking with a buckler is slightly better than a weapon, but bucklers are designed around being used to PARRY, so they demand a bit of timing. Blocking with a shield works, and blocking with a tower shield is where it truly shines.

ivory lantern
#

my inventory is a mess

fossil delta
sharp bluff
#

learn to parry, it really helps with blitzing enemies

ivory lantern
#

i did not take organizations into account when building my base 😅

heady parcel
#

Downside with depending on parry is that when fighting multiple enemies it is hard to time parries and not get hit unprotected in between. Depending on how big the gang is borderline impossible. Hence I have never liked bucklers...

fossil delta
#

I stopped using parry in my first play through. Initially it was because it made the game too easy, along with dodge rolling. Then I started doing zero death runs, and even one death due to a missed parry became unacceptable. Blocking is far more reliable. So blocking has been all I do for about 5000 hours now.

heady parcel
#

Regular round shield has decent block value, so even if you don't land the parry it will protect you a fair deal. It has a strong enough parry value to be good at that too, so to me the bucklers are just something for the sweats who like to dance around the battlefield playing invincible until something hits them straight in the face 😄

fossil delta

#

Now if I ever do a no portal run, that will obviously change.

heady parcel
#

Yeah no-portals changes everything. But in a good way, to me at least. No-map I would only find frustrating, but no-portals makes me appreciate the ships and some of the tools we get (pathify, paved roads - more than just decoration). I feel like no-portals is the way the game should be played, portals should be unlocked much later - maybe in Mistlands, but definitely not earlier. That's just how I feel about it. I won't ever play with portals before Ashlands again anyways.

#

(Ashlands on the other hand is such an unenjoyable biome to be in that I have - in my no-portals run, as I had planned all along - activated portals so I have a stone portal in my Ashlands base leading back to my home base. It is the only portal I will allow myself.)

#

Had to sail the drackar back out through the maze to set it up too, so it feels deserved 😄

Also, I would like to ask for some light source to get bumped up the queue with regards to rendering. I built a big, tall light house on a reef offshore of my main base. Now when I sail towards this base from far away, the first thing that renders in is a <BLEEP>ING birch tree on the shore, then the tower itself and THEN the actual bloody bonfire I lit at its top. Please, please PLEASE for the love of Odin make the light from the bonfire at least render in at the same distance as the FUDGING TREES!!!!

#

Aaaaargh!

#

My light house is a good 50-100 meters offshore btw, it is far enough offshore that when I am in my house it will not render, I will see the jetty I built to walk out to it, and the boats moored next to it, but the tower won't render until I walk closer to the beach - and the bonfire a further few meters later. It's all backwards... 😕

flat stag

I think I accidentally set my light setting to "realistic" or something like that (in Subnautica). And as a result I could only see a few meters forward. When I had to go to a really deep place in a really huge vessel, it was really hard to descend into the depth, because I was constantly bumping into things - it was that dark. and because of that I always had to leave my vessel to scout and to leave light thingies for myself, as a guide. And it was scary AF. I imagine if Valheim had deep caves like that or underwater mechanics - it might also achieve a certain level of horror, in a similar manner.

sharp bluff
flat stag

One of the scariest things for me in Valheim, however (besides the stupid deathsquittos), was in the Swamps at night. A flying ghost appeared above the water and chased me, while I was sailing away. It ALMOST caught up to me. The first sea monster / serpent encounter was also pretty scary

A shitload of years ago I played this dungeon delving game called "Dungeon Master". It was the basis on which the "Eye of the Beholder" franchise was inspired - so WAY fricking back. Anyway it was this enormous labyrinthine dungeon, and there was no map function whatsoever. So if you didn't want to get helplessly lost you had to make your own maps and keep track of where the feck you were going. Awesome game, but man now I am starting to wonder what year it was...

fossil delta
#

Dang, late 80's? BTW, I am old.

heady parcel
#

There were some levels that would change randomly so they couldn't be mapped, but that came really deep down the dungeon

#

Hahaha, reading the wikipedia entry about the game now and one comment is the lack of a map makes the game "extremely difficult". Yeah that's how I remember it, I had a stack of papers with maps that I was browsing profusely as I played it.

#

Anyway - no-map can be fun, but to be perfectly honest I think that for it to truly work in Valheim it needs to be worked into a synergy with the cartography table so you can actually access a proper map when at the table. That way you can make plans on how to go about exploration even if you can't have the full map on call at any time.

flat stag
#

I created a suggestion for a DIY-ingame-map

#

The big question is - what if you die. Should you be able to at least get an ingame hint on where your gravestone is? Kinda like when looking for silver ore

#

Coz if you died half a world away and you didn't leave any trails behind. GL, hf, searching for your corpse until you are 80 years old

heady parcel
#

Easy enough to implement in game. You simply don't get to use "M" but whatever you explore still registers, so when you copy to the Cartography Table you provide all your uncovered stuff, and when you read it you see all that you and anybody else who has interacted with that table have explored.

#

As for death, yes I think seeing your grave on the map should be base level...

flat stag
#

I personally can't imagine myself playing like that unless there were ingame tools to support playing without M. The payoff of playing without M should be greater than the suffering that comes with it

heady parcel
#

Yeah, no-map is not the most popular way to play the game for a reason - but still some of us do like it that way!

flat stag
#

Sure, for streamers and "content creators" it could be fun, but as a solo player who plays offline - I can't imagine that many people would go through something like that

#

The main thing is. Playing without map should feel like a strategic puzzle game that stimulates creativity

#

A limitation is imposed upon you and you have to overcome it with the tools you got. Leaving stuff in the world that helps you navigate, forcing you to take notes irl, and so on

heady parcel
#

That's pretty much how it works out now, yeah

flat stag
#

Ok here is a random idea - if you build a beacon, lighthouse or a smoke signal, it could be added to the ingame-map that you build yourself, over time. But building one of these takes time and resources

#

But if you build on of these it could have 2 huge benefits. You can see in the world if there are no obstructions on the horizon. And it could be added to the map.

#

I think it will mitigate the complete lack of map ("M") and create a balance of map VS no-map

#

Besides, I imagine it would feel good to be lost and finally finding one of your own navigational creations in the world

dark coyote
#

skyrim sstyle compass at the top, and you can see lighthouse pips on it, maybe color coded for distance

flat stag
#

If you build the most advanced lighthouse in the game, and you climb high enough, it could emit light from anywhere in the world. If something like this existed in the game, I would be motivated to play without the conventional, convenient map that we have now

#

Also, in a game about Vikings who primarily travelled by sea, lighthouses and such would make sense

#

So, let me recap all of my ideas as a short summary: You build a map-board as a furniture you can place in your base. On it you can draw simple objects (using chalk or with colors using dyes from plants, etc.)

On top of that you can build lighthouses, beacons or smoke signals. Different pros and cons. Simplest ones are just for you to see in the world. The most advanced ones will be added to your map automatically.

If you die and you are totally screwed and you can't find your corpse, there should be emergency solutions you can work towards to make the game help you in the right direction. These "solutions" will take time, ofc.

#

The navigation in the world meta game could be fun, actually, if there were proper game mechanics to support it.

barren whale
#

render distance is capped at about 120m away from your character, 200m for certain things like trees and large rocks

heady parcel
#

I refuse to believe that allowing light sources to render a couple of hundred meters earlier would completely tank performance for everyone

dark coyote
#

it doesnt need to be a light source, per se, similar to the lit campfire bug, just need some kind of dot imo

tacit crystal
heady parcel
#

Whatever it is, my take is that some players being on absolute shite systems that don't even comply with minimum system requirements should not dictate these things in-game.

pliant hatch
#

Glad that's for the devs to decide then.

dark coyote
flat stag
#

Regarding the system performance. I still play on GTX 1070, which is my old, loyal veteran workhorse. I found that the earlier biomes run fine, but the later bioms kinda lag slightly, which is a shame, because it seems like they are going away from the simple world design of the earlier biomes. Not sure if it changed... been a while since I played

the sword is expensive but im glad i made one

its still useful even after getting blackmetal

heady parcel
# dark coyote lol you'd rather it be the opposite?

I'd rather it would be customisable to fit your own system. Not being able to see a damn campfire that I SHOULD be seeing, because a tiny percentage of players are on ancient enough systems to make it impossible to render, is a wee bit frustrating. And my PC is fricking ten years old. The systems we are adapting to here must be truly ancient!
