I'm from NC in a region just outside of Appalachia (like 30-40 minutes away) so I speak a bit of a "transitional dialect" with more general Southern features mixed in with the older Appalachian features I've inherited from having been raised by old folks. the southern plains are way thicker accented and have more idioms, phrases, etc

the middle piedmont region is still very southern, more people in this region come from out of state than farther south so the accent tends to soften up
