So I'm trying to get particle textures working in vrchat, but the particles only show up as solid squares, how would I fix this?

Since the Quest doesn't support transparency avatars you are pretty restricted on what you can do

you can try using mesh partices, and in a 3d software knife out the transparent part of the texture

like youd put the texture on a plane, and then Knife out the shape of the opaque part, and end up deleing the transparent part

If you mean upload them to Quest, just change build targets and upload, you may need to optimise for it to be shown by default, and if the build is over 10mb, you’ll need to use crunch compression on your textures, remove props, or similar.

I have been trying to use the blend feature CAT Blender Plug-in to make a fallback avatar from my main. It's methods can very clearly achieve the result I am seeking but....

No matter what I try, when I get to excellent or good poly ranges the so called smart decimation distorts the face and creates many tears no at seems but on the middle of the face.

Anyone use this who has any suggestions? I could work around it if only the plug in gave the option to progress in steps rather than trying to be a one shot deal.

One of the keys to this method is that it creates a baked texture map before any decimation. This then allows for a near normal final appearance even at 10k or less Pokies...

The downside to that is any repairs or adjustments done after the decimation must be done in traditional low poly methods which completely wastes the potential.

Anyone know of any other tools that can bake and Atlas and make low poly avatars appear in near PC quality?

With this Method I turned my nearly 70k poly Avatar into a Good rated 33k poly Avatar with no visible loss in Quality. Going Sub 1Ok allows for discernable quality reduction but an Avatar that's far superior in appearance than any of the public fallbacks in the game.

You just need to learn how to work with materials for the program that you are using. It's not a matter of getting rid of the shaders for Quest but choosing the shaders you want to use in PC.

There are tools to convert from PC to Quest because there is only one option for shaders on Quest. The other way around has no limit to shader options. Even if someone made a tool to work with a specific set of shaders it could not predict what a person would want when no longer limited to VRChat mobile shaders. This is why there is no tool. If a person can't work with shaders then they should purchase an avatar they like rather than making one that they don't .

I'm pretty sure most just leave it parented to the head, so it's broken while moving but still gives the look desired during actual mirror simulation. lol. VRChat is working on something that should allow some dynamic movement even on Quest. In the meantime you did pose an interesting idea. I don't know if Unity and/or the VRCSDK has support for it, but it the prospect of parenting hair bones to other bones at the same time they are linked together does seem like a way to add some dynamic appearing movement.

this is probably a noob question, but.... about toggles; do toggleable objects add to the "meshes" part of the performance ranking?

So like if I want to add a crowbar without using a blendshape/shape key and having it inside my hand prior to the toggle

Any separate object will have its own mesh and thus add to the mesh count. You can utilize dedicated bone scaling on a unified mesh to avoid using blendshapes. Other than that, I don't believe there's any better options on quest (besides avoiding the use of toggles altogether, of course).

Right, it's a reasonable question, for sure. With material slots VRC can guarantee the maximum amount of materials that will be active at a time, since any that are alternated within the slots are by necessity mutually exclusive - As far as I can tell there's no such way to guarantee which meshes will be on or off (alternated) at any given time in Unity by default, so all the SDK can do is look at the total.

Perhaps there could be a way of controlling this if the SDK implemented custom script components for each child mesh object to define mutual exclusivity, but I don't know enough about the technical side of things to say if this would be possible or performant enough to be worth the added complexity.

There's still only one skinned mesh renderer - but if you look, the prop added a regular mesh renderer. You can have up to 2 of each and still have medium performance.

nope there is no way to automatically show avatars hidden because they are very poor on quest because very poor avatars have no cap to the amount of resources they could take up so you could run into scenarios where you run into a room a very poor avatars and have your quest have terrible frame rate or outright crash

No shaders on Quest avatars support transparency, and the particle shaders are only allowed on worlds (because the avatar and world SDKs used to be one)

This may have been asked before, but I'm genuinely curious, and I haven't really found an answer myself:

Is there a reason the mobile Toon shader...__ doesn't shade__? Like, every avatar I've used with the toon shader are behaving more like the texture is applied as a static image with saturation/brightness equal to the lighting intensity.

It doesn't behave at all how one would expect a "toon" shader to behave (e.g. Breath of the Wild, what @the rock#5290 posted in the image above, etc.)

Likewise, even in the unity editor the behavior is the same. With directional lights the avatar is "lit"... in a sense, but with no shadows, and very bright. Any other light, and it is as if the avatar's texture has had its saturation/brightness knocked down by half.

For some avatars this is really, really bad. Like, "I cannot see my hands in front of a toon-lit wall of the same color" bad. — This isn't just an aesthetic complaint, this literally makes avatars, objects, and any other use of it completely broken in a worst case scenario.

I've even noticed Quest-OK worlds moving away from the toon-lit shader, and I'm beginning to suspect this is, in fact, why.

There seem to be really, really simple toon shaders you can make in unity (e.g. https://roystan.net/articles/toon-shader.html), and VRChat does provide a modified Standard shader in the SDK that does provide shadows, so it doesn't seem as if shading itself is a performance issue. One would think it'd be less of a performance constraint to have that "hard fall off".

So I'm not altogether sure whether the mobile toon shader is just... broken? Or I, and others, are completely missing something about how its supposed to be used?

Is it possible the transparent areas are "backfaces"? I had an issue like that. VRChat Quest shaders cull backfaces, rendering them transparent.

If those sections of the mesh have their faces "flipped" they'll render wrong.

You have to use blender in this case; I forgot how but theres an option to select vertices and tell blender to "recalculate outside".

In laymen's terms, VRChat doesn't render the "inside" of models, but "inside" is relative, and can get "flipped around" on parts of the model at times. Have to flip them back.

I had this happen to me yesterday too. Basically it seems like blender gets confused/lost when you do multiple knife cuts at once. Try only doing one cut at a time so you're only creating 1 new edge.

To anyone who knows, is there a way to mix two textures in an "unlit" manner on Quest? I like the appearance of the MatCap lit, using Texture A as the base texture, and Texture B as the matcap, but it is a lit texture so it responds to lights.

The standard lite behaves differently too; The emissive texture remains lit but the standard texture does not. :|

I kinda essentially want one texture to work like a "multiply" layer, with the whole object unlit.

You can always import the FBX files from ROBLOX studio into unity and see what happens there, i might try and make it for you

Im also sure the avatar base comes rigged from the get go, so you’d just bind the objects to the bone you want and it should work

No, as that would result in the mesh needing to be rendered twice, what you can do is in blender, select the affected faces in edit mode, press shift + d then click without moving your mouse to duplicate them in place, then press alt + n then choose “Flip”. It will increase your tri count somewhat, but it’s still better than fully disabling backface culling

None of the VRChat mobile avatar shaders support transparency because of the poor performance on mobile platforms, you’ll have to use the blender knife tool to cut it out manually, and blendshapes may get a bit screwed up in the process.

When I switch to the android build this appears and removes everything, including the avatar descriptor

Click on your avatar in the hierarchy and then add component

Click avatar descriptor and go through the avatar descriptor adding things like lipsync and the eye bone mapping

Then go to your content manager and copy the id of your pc avatar

Paste it into the blueprint id in the desciptor

Click attach

And it should be good

If you're using shaders that are not compatible just select all your materials and go to shaders VRChat/Mobile and pick your desired shader

The rest should be okay along as you don't care about optimisation if you haven't done that already, if you have too many materials you might need to texture atlas in blender but thats really easy if you have the CATs plugin

It depends on what’s causing it to go over the “very poor” ranking. Somethings just disable certain components, others do nothing, but is someone does “show avatar“ it will always show the whole avatar, unless it’s over the 10mb build size limit

Did you create that model? Properly naming the bones would probably help a lot. You need to make sure that the slots listed on the body to the right match the specific bone. If, for example, the model doesn't have a toe bone, that would need to be blank. Some bones are necessary for a Humanoid rig, and you may not have said bones, in which case you would need to use a Generic rig instead.

I met a friend useing mamagen avatar yesterday and I notice the eyes and mouth on the visor doesn't seem like shape key or bones, it looks like an animated texture that can be controlled by lip sync.
