We appreciate the feedback, Ryan. The idea sounds cool. But taking the current complexity and randomness of #nms-photomode-gallery heart traffic into consideration, along with the limitations of Discord's API services, to automate this process while trying to maintain it "fair" is just not feasible. And making it a manual process, as in having the team choose an image every week wouldn't be realistic taking our team's existing workload into account.

I'm unclear what you're referring to in respect to our NMS voice channels. We've never policed off-topic discussion in them, as long as they don't break the rules described in the #voice-rules channel.

Moreover, I'm pretty sure that the suggestion above was referring to text channels.

Some of the topic-specific channels do not allow comments or discussions, presumably to keep those channels clean.
Why not allow users to create threads? That way, the desire to comment can be satisfied neatly within a small box underneath the post – without cluttering the channel itself.

A thread moderation storm in a Partner Discord server of 83k members, which must abide to stricter community guidelines than your friend's private server. We won't moderate hundreds of threads because a few folks are unwilling to remain on topic or follow a few simple server and pinned channel rules. That type of effort is essentially not realistic for any of our moderation volunteers. Everyone is welcome to create private group DMs too, then they wouldn't have to worry about moderation in a public server.

Honestly I dont think we need this level of granularity on an overall-general game server. If you wanna deep dive into ship hunting or are looking for super specific combinations, you'll be better off on the Creative Hub and / or Glyph Exchange servers.

First (&2nd) Wave Spawns
Players don't tend to realize that while this mechanic has been utilized for years by the community, it is one of the most sensitive and prone to error. The first wave of ships that spawns in is determined by the player's precise position when it loads in, including the direction they're facing.
What this means is that unless players follow a consistent standard, it's completely unworkable.
The Standard
In order to ensure the most consistent results, 1st Wave Scouting should follow these steps:

1. Land at/Teleport to a Space Station, create a Restore Point, and reload.
2. Upon load completion, do not touch your controls, just stand and wait to see the first four ships to land.
3. Either reload and repeat, else wait for the next set of ships to land.
4. Technically, all of these ships spawned when the player loaded in. However, provided the simple rules above are followed, not only will the same ships spawn in on load almost every time, they'll usually land in the same group.
5. In order to be considered a 1st Wave Spawn, the ship in question should be observed to land in the 1st group across at least 2 out of 3 proper reloads. However, experienced ship hunters tend to do 5 or 7 for certainty - the only reason 3 is considered acceptable is so beginner ship hunters aren't too intimidated to give it a shot.
6. 2nd Wave Spawns follow the same standard, just in the 2nd group of ships to land.

I have vetted a working ship "trading" method - Player A boots up solo, exchanges ship to be given for an NPC ship, then runs over and enters purchase dialogue with NPC. Player B joins game at this point, and after landing, Player A releases the NPC, allowing Player B to purchase the ship.
Net difference in result: It's now selling ship @ stock game pricing as opposed to gifting.
(And in more exciting news, I've fully restored ship reskinning glitch)

There is one discord I was that had an option to select specific channels from the server to add to "favorites" and those channels would be pinned to the top of our side bar so we didn't have to look through a long list of channels to find the ones we were interested in. I don't know if that's easy or difficult to add or if maybe I had nitro at the time and its a nitro feature, but I think that could be very useful.

Once, I suggested channels for different languages. The staff's answer was no because it would be hard to moderate. But... what if we used channels only in the languages that some moderators can use? Example: no staff member speaks russian, so no russian channel. But a moderator speaks french, so a french channel is created.

Occasionally I run into a discord channel where pretty much no matter what question is asked there is a grumpy core that says "check pins" and the help channels are nothing but auto response check pins check pins.. I've only run into two servers like that.

Well I suggest some kind of accomodations for the helpful people here. Sure I understand 'try to Google' your basic questions or whatever.. read wiki a bit sure but the guys and ladies here are encouraging of pretty much any questions.

I have a suggestion for the bot-spam faq and info channel. I'm new to the server and I'm having a hard time with it. I'm going to still do the best I can to use it the way it's set up but I think there's a different format that would be a lot easier for people to use than commands.

First, you could add a locked bot-spam directory channel for the commands, and leave the regular bot-spam channel to enter them in. Not super necessary, but would also save people time being able to preview what they want to command. (That would be super useful to people not adept at using Discord.)

But, primarily, for the faqs themselves:

Lock a channel to be read-only. Post all the faq topics. Make the last post in the channel have links to all the above posts. That way, you have no interruptions in the information and there's an easy-to-find and use directory. It'll make updating the faqs a lot easier, too.

The problem with that is anytime we make a new FAQ the entire channel needs to be redone or edited depending on the order of information - it wouldn't make sense to have ship or multitool information spread everywhere throughout the channel, even with a link guide at the bottom. The real issue at hand is how much there is to try and keep organized in a productive way, with discord inherent limitations.

Almost no good FAQ is going to be under 200 characters though (that isn't the limit for embeds btw) and the order definitely matters for a smooth experience, it doesn't read right when you have to bounce around a single channel up and down to read all the relevant info for what you want to see. Imagine a book that had chapter one at the beginning, 2 at the end, 3 in between etc - that's not effective or efficient.

Much easier to just run the command for the info you want, then links to other embeds with more detail

My thought for the number of changes being faced with could be a post in the faq itself towards the end that just holds all the new information until the faq itself is updated, so that it only has to be redone once in awhile. Like a temporary addendum.

I think it might be good to have a few extra steps to go through before unlocking server sections.

Something like calling out #nms-questions as a likely place to get started, explicitly guiding new members through unlock steps, and crucially — making it very obvious that no one here is getting paid.

I think how professional the server looks and how dedicated the team is here combine to give off the impression that you’re not volunteers.

Not really since exosuit layouts are not subject to procedural generation - the SC slots are in the same positions on the grid for all players so there's much less variations in layout compared to starships or other equipemnt. So it doesn't really make sense to have a channel for something so niche.

Okay, this one is likely to be a little controversial, but totally on-point. I suggest an exception, or exemption to the "no memes allowed" rule, either serverwide or specific to the most active "vague" channels like main chat/spoilers/thefuture.

The exception would be as follows:
Users may post memes, provided they check all of the following:

1. They are the meme's creator.
2. The only media involved is NMS
3. They have not posted it elsewhere in the server that calendar day.

I get that this would increase demand on moderators. But I've seen many of the more outgoing/friendly/active members express their disappointment at the rule. I think that this exception would minimize the downside, and encourage more creativity and interactivity overall.

Who knows? Down the road we might end up with enough good options to set up a gallery of NMSCord-approved memes for use. 🤣

I think the enforcement of topics to channels should be a bit less strict. I've watched moderators walk in and kill the conversation in a channel simply because it was not on the "correct" topic, after which no one said anything. If there is no one else talking, and/or it's fairly quiet, I think conversation should be permitted to stray to whatever topic is natural, as long as it's otherwise within the rules of the server.

It would help to not clog up the video game specific chats in the other games/other media channel. The sticking point with what you propose is that NMS is a massive game coded by a teeny developer - pretty much every part of it fails sooner or later, so unless most players are interested in some of EVERYTHING? Maybe I was unclear, this would be specifically for the experimental branch. The channel would be focused on changes/bugs that are potentially new in the patch. I suggested it be opt-in (like experimental) so it wouldn't be likely that live issues would come up.

I think what you describe works well for live patches, but experimental is where the bugs are being taken out before they go live and may benefit from having it's own channel.

Edit: Just to add, that the only appropriate place to really discuss these issues currently is the #nms-spoilers as the patch is potentially future content, but also what if the issue is about a new ship? This is the only time we've had an experimental like this, where people needed help with multiple things as there was an expedition going on. Typically experimental has a couple days at most and then gets pushed out, which doesn't seem like it needs its own channel. Desaturate lower-level roles to make higher level and special roles stand out more. For example: Top Autophage looks like a less special Legend, NMEGG looks like a less special Winter Sky, Top Gek isn't much different from Established, Top Traveller is good, but fairly similar to Familiar, Top Anomaly and Resolute are almost identical, Top Korvax looks like a less special Robust. How NMS can compete with the growing market of space sims: Make the frigates multicrew; industry frigates trigger coop industry missions, combat frigates trigger combat missions (infiltration/bounty/escort/etc.), exploration trigger exploration missions (data collection/planet surveys/etc.). Allow frigates to fly in atmonsphere, but not land. To land, players would have to jump in their personal ships (which are parked on the frigate). Introduce multcrew ground vehicles with mounted weapons. Introduce enemy ground bases with interior objectives (bounties/heist/data hacks/etc.) Also, add bandits/enemy faction to some abandoned freighters for these multicrew missions. Overhaul character combat mechanics to more resemble a TPS (i.e., left trigger = aim) with a cover mechanic. Lastly, make the multitool just a multitool (mining/etc.) and add weapons of various types that can be looted from these new locations.

At least four times since 5.0 dropped, people on help have seemed to get annoyed at the volume of VR talk — since many features are non-discoverable and the nomenclature isn’t set so people have to say things like “turn to face X and point at Y with (non-)dominant hand while looking at Z”, the questions tend to have a lot of back-and-forth, too, all exchanges that are completely noise to non-VR players.

Pets got their own channel even tho explorers archive can be used to save creature cordinates. You get what i mean right?

Suggestion; a read only, "useful information" channel that basically would function as an (easier to view for new users) version of the media pins in #nms-questions

A moderator could post the images and since it's read only it would ensure those images never get buried and reposted constantly in other channels, at least not as much since people will be more likely to see and have their questions already answered. This could also help a bit to reduce ol' Gunter posting text walls outside of bot spam.

Ah, I like that, basically a channel with all the pins/faq already in it. Though I suppose one issue would be keeping it up to date would be a bit of a chore. So maybe a channel that is an index that goes to all the pins/posts/faqs directly? Though not sure faqs can be pinned as I am not sure those would get updated.

We are in the process of revamping how the FAQ system will work, which includes the bothersome chore of working within Discord confines, so it will still be some time before that is in place. Using a channel with just a ton of pics out of context wouldn't be helpful, and making individual posts with each one along with a header just tedious, and in light of the changes coming not practical. Our current FAQ system along with pins in various channels works fine for now, so we are not going to switch until we have every tiny detail in place.

Portals exist as only one per planet.
Abandoned buildings are likely hundreds per planet as well.

When people hunt for ships / tools, they are looking into finding visually interesting procedurally generated designs / stats.
The things you mentioned do not possess this same procedural appeal save for some architectural / layout changes that could likely be showcased in a single page infographic.

If you mean just a general tech chat for anything non-NMS, it's less likely to be considered.

How is there not official servers? Now I know player cap on a session is 32 I think but having a 16 man cap in your alliance could work for like a pvp server point of view Like it would be dope to have your alliance take a planet and have to defend it from other alliances with buildings being able to be attacked that you place down you setup your outpost with turrets and your crew defending the base on the ground in the sky and in orbit all out wars would be sick! Me and some other travelers have been collectively thinking on a way to enhance the experience of voice chats.

• like a subtitle to voice chats to let players know what happens in the said chat.
• potentially a channel for teams of builders on large projects (not a private one) but simply a subgroup for builders in a team.
• since lfg small groups send the message for Randoms to join. But some may want a team up and it'd be all.

Closed captions aren't inherently available on Discord, necessitating the use of 3rd party apps or bots. We have no plans at this time to add yet another bot to the server, but we will look into options and talk about it.

Fair enough, thanks for responding and being open to suggestions. .... not closed captions but the ability to set channel status by all is a discord option you set in the channel permissions. I have tested this on a personal server. Set channel status is what Sensei means by subtitle.

We did allow anyone to set voice channel status when it first became available. Unfortunately some people could not handle that responsibly and we were forced to take that permission away.

Understood and makes sense! I do think at this point we are self policing on a regular basis if that helps. We were discussing this and it seems like since these are public channels, yes there would need to be some tolerance just like we get people vocally who say unacceptible things. When encountered we just mute them or whatever other rectification and move on. But the question is what's the best use all told? There are masses of well intentioned people who would like to set sort of a "topic" on certain channels so help organize what's going on where. Otherwise even the best intentioned involved...it can be like herding cats. People have no idea what's going on where and sometimes collide with one another in discussions. Just asking maybe to reeval at this point and maybe try a new limited trial basis again?

It would be great to have a channel dedicated for discovering and sharing planets (something like nms-planets). This would provide a space for players to discuss and showcase the most interesting planets they've come across. Considering No Man's Sky is largely about exploring unique worlds, it's surprising there isn't already a place for this in the discord server dedicated to this game.

Currently, there are channels for, among other things, ship hunting, base building, multitools, and discovering fauna, but nowhere specifically for planet exploration. A channel like this could inspire community to explore new systems or revisit ones highlighted by other players.

I hope this suggestion will be taken into consideration and I’m confident it would quickly become a vibrant space for players to share and discover the wonders of No Man’s Sky.
