Is there a plug-in for OBS that will do the tracking? or is there specific software that's required? (asking for posterity)

As of now - I am not aware of anything both natively or plug-in wise with OBS that can do this type of tracking for VTubers. Though I will keep an eye out on this.

For VTubers, the most used software is -

VSeeFace (Free)
VTube Studio (Free, but one time DLC to remove watermark)
PrprLive (Free)
Facerig or Animaze (Paid, read TOS for commercial usage rights)

There are also a few JP software options, but I don't usually recommend anything I myself have not used.

There is also a free in browser app that can load in both 2D and 3D models but the tracking is still being worked on/improved.

Howdy! The kappagen widget/overlay isn't open source right? I was wondering if I could submit a PR for overhauling the way the emotes are rendered to leverage webGL. to make rendering and resultant motion/effects more visually interesting/fun. I have a poc to handle using source gif/webp/apng as a texture source to instance emotes and was curious if would bring about anything. I was able to render 1 million animated emotes with their own trajectory across a canvas so the performance is there to showcase some interesting particle-like effects

So Ive used stream elements alot for my chatbot, merch store and for some data about my stream for awhile. Last time I brought this subject up I was shot down but now I need some help.

The app is great for IRL streams but I'm a mobile gamer. Stream Labs to this point has allowed me to have a face cam overlay and alerts on my stream directly from my phone while I peacefully play assassin's Creed, Elderscrolls online and more.

With recent issues in the community I was wondering the possibility of Stream Elements integrating things like screenshare and alerts to their mobile app as I already more strongly believe in this company.

@worldly pine I always say it depends on the game. But as a person with a ryzen cpu and 3090 I still use x264 as it has better quality and the ryzen chips are built for gaming and streaming.

Yeah I have a 3900x & 2080ti. The weird thing I found though, when streaming Call of Duty using x264 it keeps my CPU usage in the 90s, when I stream GTA V using nvenc it keeps my GPU in the 90s LMAO. Though during the test stream I did last night it seems that x264 had the better quality. But yeah no matter what settings I changed I couldn't get it out of the 90s on either one, even using the lowest game settings and lower encoding settings. It was interesting.

you have a 3900x. nice i have a special x264 command i use to lower my cpu use for obs. opens up more room for the games. so with my threadripper 3970x i go into the x264 and set my settings like so
bitrate 4400
keyframes 2 (never want to use auto)
encoder speed Fast
profile main
x264 options threads=32

with the last custom x264 command it uses 1/2 the threads on my cpu for encoding because my cpu has 64 threads. imo makes it more efficient.

🤔 ahhh I may have to try setting it to half the threads on mine as well. Does that set the hard number of threads used or just the max so it uses up to that amount?

It sets a defined max threads on the CPU to use

Also if you set a max threads you can slow down the encoding speed and compress the data sent more allowing more bandwidth. Just know that not all platforms are friendly with it. Found Facebook won't allow my encoding speed to go any lower than medium.

Naw basically look at it like this the slower the encoding the more compressed it is and smaller the data. So less of a bitrate. But to answer your question in my experience within the last 9 years I've not seen a quality degrading on twitch, Facebook or YouTube

But that's me no two computers or cpus are the same.

The limit will either be your cable or your Ethernet card, you can check in Network Settings in your PC to see check your network card/port speed or if you let me know your motherboard model I can look it up for you.

CAT 5e will be plenty fast enough unless you have a faster switch installed on your network, or if you're running over 100m of cable. Most ISP provided switches only offer 1 Gbps even as a hub.

Try to avoid flat CAT7 cables, they tend to be prone to breaking.

You definitely need a newer GPU, at this point it doesn't matter if it will be mobile or stationary. New cpu and psu will not save you from a gpu bottleneck. I believe ryzen 5600x is not enough for encoding(while also playing) and your gtx980 is not enough for nearly anything today

Yeah that’s why I was looking at getting the MSI Delta It has a ryzen 5800 X with a 3060 and 16 gigs of RAM and 1 TB SSD that would be my gaming PC temporary while I could use my current tower for streaming until I can upgrade the desktop and then switch it at this point that’s really all I can afford being that GPUs are in high demand right now so realistically whether I buy the laptop or I buy the parts for my desktop I’m still gonna be spending around the same amount because I won’t pay $1000 for a $400 used GPU that’s just asinine

Not directly a Stream Elements question, but does anyone have a good, free way to create a digital audio output so that you can route some sounds to your recording and some to your stream on a Windows computer? I have a few solutions for Mac but nothing for Windows.

I used the Virtual Audio Cable free trial version to create virtual audio devices, then never ran it again - I use EarTrumpet to set different software to output on those different devices, and then I add those devices to OBS and use the monitoring feature to also hear them in my headphones while splitting them to different audio channels in my recording files

it's a bit hacky, but it works well, and the VAC "free trial" limitations are all limitations of their software that interacts with the virtual audio devices they created - if you're not using their software, it's no problem

Don't forget that cpu is equally important for streaming because of multiple apps playing at once and demanding different resources, kinda hard to stream when your cpu is at 99% usage at all times

Not sure if this is the appropriate place to share or if I should post in #helpdesk-mobile, BUT, wanted to share how to get the SE overlays on the Prism Live app that is recommended for iPhone streamers. (I found tons of mentions of it on the discord, but never any guidance on how.)

In Prism Live app > swipe left > add media from web > paste the overlay URL from SE > click the SE icon that will now appear on that screen > maximize to fit screen (if you'll be broadcasting in landscape, rotate the phone before clicking the maximize button or it'll be sized to portrait mode)

Once done, the Prism app will update in real time as you emulate and make changes on the SE overlay editor on your computer. Took me a bit of experimenting to get layers placed where I wanted because the dimensions are different than the default SE overlay.

So in a clan's discord I run, there is "Moderators" (a role above the regular members), that we want to be able to make it so they can change regular member's nicknames.
I've went in and given the role to moderators for "Change Nickname" but for some reason they are still unable to change the nickname of regular members.

That is called transcoding and no. You are stuck with whatever resolution you stream to Twitch with. It's not recommended to stream above 720p60 as your viewers will have difficulty if you attempt higher resolution/bitrates. Partners are the only ones who have Transcoding options available to them.

Dropped Frames means that you have a bad connection between your device and the streaming platform and most likely something related to your ISP not handling the connection properly.

Speed tests usually cannot help solve this problem and its best to use this guide: https://obsproject.com/wiki/Dropped-Frames-and-General-Connection-Issues

If you stream to twitch, use the !twitchtest command and do a connection test to your regional servers.

What's everyone's position on APUs? I want to build a decent not crazy gaming PC but the GPU prices are just insane. Can I get a good experience for not SUPER demanding games (Let's say Civ 6, FFXIV, Maybe some older games and CRPGs), I haven't done any PC gaming in a long while so I'm pretty lost, any feedback would be appreciated

APUs I don't feel are really meant for gaming. Civ 6 isn't exactly lightweight, nor is FFXIV (I have played them both and currently own Civ 6). Gaming laptops exist but I imagine the higher end ones use mobile gpu's.

Well you have to think of it like this: The graphics processing and general command processing are crammed into one chip. All of that extra work that a GPU normally does is now in one formfactor. That's a lot of energy. Sure you can get a dedicated processor or GPU to its thermal limit but each unit is doing a discreet type of work so it has more power to do it. Instead now you have this all in one form factor so you have to sacrifice performance for convenience or space requirements.

APUs are good for what they are good for, but even moderate gaming, I think, should be done on a decent GPU (for what it's worth, I don't think gaming on something like a AMD Firepro V5900 is comparable in this discussion, it's a workstation GPU meant for a different kind of task).

I've gamed on laptops with APUs, desktops with integrated graphics and desktops with dedicated GPUs (like my 2070 super) and even on games like Civ 6 (which almost killed my workstation), there is a major difference between them all.

That being said, I don't know your situation or what's acceptable to you. Hope that helped somewhat.

Everything you say makes sense to me and I appreciate you taking the time, as I've been out of the game for so long, I thought (based on some very preliminary research) maybe APUs took a jump since I was last into this stuff and could help run non state of the art max FPS games, but seems like that's not the case. I honestly just can't justify to myself the amount of money I'd have to put down on a decent GPU (from what I've seen), considering the several other gaming platforms I have access to, so that's that. Once again though, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain it to me.

You're right, but it only looks at viewers that aren't mods or broadcasters. If those bots are modded they get ignored entirely

Well yeah it ignores mods or broadcasters because the SE bot (which should be modded) cannot ban other mods or the broadcaster. Some people don't mod bots when they don't have to (because paranoid) i.e. when they just use overlays from service XYZ that needs to have an active bot in the channel for stats, but doesn't need mod powers.

Then it might be useful to add the option for a whitelist, even though a pre-defined one probably isn't needed

If you are not hearing your alerts and/or Media Request, you are most likely using the Control Audio via OBS option in your browser source properties.
To make sure you hear the alerts and the stream also hears them, follow along the screenshot bellow.

Hey all, I was just wondering if there's a way to properly record a high fps game. For instance, my Minecraft client hits numbers as high as 500-800 frames and while this does look good on my side, its capped to 60fps through recording on obs and seems kinda off. Should i just cap my fps at a respectable point like 90-120 or am I missing something?

I believe the max you can get for recording using obs is 120fps, and even that is already incredibly high amount of data that is needed to be processed by your cpu, gpu, and drives altogether in real-time so the chances to run into bottleneck are pretty high. And keep in mind that obs has no official support for >60fps, so you are doing it at your own risk. Also the fact that you can't really use 120fps videos on any major platforms makes recording with higher than 60fps just pointless. Even playing at more that 20-40 fps then your monitor's Hz is just an unnecessary load to your gpu. Anyway, these are the settings you wanna check.

If you’re using the overlays correctly, all of the overlay widgets/elements you want are contained in a single overlay to reduce cpu usage. There should be no need to “crop”

Btw none of the streamers I know(including myself) are using the widgets in one overlay, because it's just pain into the ass if you are reusing widgets in several scenes (that's what we all do) and want to just change 1 value and/or move the widget slightly. It's like 5-6 clicks for every overlay multiplied on 4-6 scenes... So 1 widget - 1 overlay

Hey I was wondering if anyone has any experience with kvm switches? I want to get one to switch between my gaming pc and and Mac which I use for music...my only problem is that my Mac has an hdmi port while my pc has a displayport...currently I can switch between the two computers with the menu settings on my monitor but I wanted to make that process quicker with the kvm switch, as well as switching over my audio interface, mic and keyboard. I'm concerned about loosing quality by using the kvm switch because the display port is plugged directly from my gaming pc to my monitor..whereas with the switch...it's not going directly from my graphics now right? I also haven't been able to find a switch with both a display port and hdmi.

hi everyone! hoping someone can point me in the right direction here. i am thinking of building a 2nd pc to handle the streaming portion of my stream on the budget side. my understanding is that i can use X264 for the encoding and potential need a GPU for OBS scene compositing. What would be a older/used suitable GPU to handle said compositing? and what older/used CPU would be able to handle the tasks of doing the streaming AND also other tasks such as my own stream monitoring, viewing other streams, chatbot, etc. TIA!
