For reference, if you get shot in COD, your invisible health bar goes down, but outside of a headshot you will probably survive, and regen health.

In Arma 3, if you are not wearing body armor, a pistol at close range s pretty lethal, and even if you do live, youll likely suffer some effect - a limp, ruined aiming, etc.

You have to approach it like you're a mortal being in a battlefield.

Hello, and welcome!

At the most basic level, go to Multiplayer, Server Browser, and check out the Official Servers tab. These servers are vanilla (barring some with DLC/CDLC), so you dont need to worry about mods.

If youre looking for a particular game mode, you can filter down at the bottom left and search for them. However, you may not be able to join every server, given mod loads/passwords, etc.

If youre looking to join a community, look in #looking_for_unit or #communities_arma3 ; or if you want to run a game in the Right Now timeline, #looking_for_game

Another question before I buy, let’s say I want to join a server but I forgot what mods they use, what do I do? Is there a way to select entire collections like gmod or do I have to manually select all the required mods?

Theres a few ways to handle modloads.

Usually, groups create a Modlist, a .html file theyll pass to you. You plug that into the Arma launcher, it loads every mod on the list - any missing get queued for download - and saves it as a preset mod load.

If you use the server browser on the launcher and select a server that is running mods, the launcher will also try to set up the mods to match, but without saving to a list.

Another way ive seen is using a third party program to publish repos, so everyone can update from a selected source - cleaner and easier, tho it bloats the hard drive footprint something awful :x

Also if your scope is something like the erco, ctrl right click to switch between two scope modes, one is a dot and the other is a proper, more zoomed in sight. This isn't the case for something like an ACO though. If the scope looks like it has an extra tube, might be worth trying to do that

At least for Arma 3 that is haven't really worked with Reforger AI yet

A3 vanilla AI isn't that bad when it comes to spotting (depending on settings).
When running AI mods it doesn't even change much either, AI just becomes smarter than vanilla

you need to reposition. AI can guess where you are going from your previous trajectory and speed. The "AI can see through things" is really mostly a myth, people just play bad and make missions wrong way

sure there have been some broken assets too that have had necessary parts missing, but those cases are very marginal

the AI is just not so dumb that it would immediately forget that there was someone they were shooting at when you pop into cover

like in quite many games

It’s not about positioning, it’s about how detection “sticks” and AI can generally guess where you are despite having no reason to assume your position. Things like hearing footsteps in the middle of a firefight isn’t realistic, neither is knowing exact position of enemies when engaged at range while they’re prone

Arma 3 is still very active and will still be active for the next years. Not only will we not see Arma 4 for at least 3-4 years, but even when it's released the playerbase will not move from one game to another within a week (there are, 10 years after release of A3, still people playing Arma 2).

And in case nobody has noticed, a brand new CDLC #spearhead_1944 has been announced and will gone to A3 pretty soon (a bird told me somewhere in July, so very soon). So why add new content to a game which won't be active anymore next year?

If you want to play the vanila campaign, DON''T use mods. It will likely mess up the intended scripting experience.

If you want less AI accuracy, or less skilled, lower the values in custom Difficulty settings.

Nah. You're a soldier, amongst a (granted, motivated and experienced) civil insurgency. Theyre fighting about as well as can be expected, better than a civvie but not as good as a proper soldier.

No shade to any freedom fighters, but if you averaged the skills across a whole team of insurgents, its only gonna go so far.

The DLCs provide more content, and two of them large maps, but any gameplay features they introduced were free for everyone. You can comfortably play on (basically) any server with just the base game.

The only restriction would be crewing DLC vics, using DLC weapons, and entirely unable to join any servers set to Tanoa or Livonia.

Searching through the server browser for a milsim group to join is not going to net any good results; you'd need to have their exact (more or less) mod load already installed and running before you could even join. If you're interested in joining a milsim group, head to #communities_arma3 and find one that suits your interests.

As far as DLC go, they are broadly optional, outside of two maps - Tanoa and Livonia. You will not be able to play on those two terrains without owning their DLC... out of the literal hundreds of terrains available on the workshop, this isn't a huge issue.

Also, find the servers through the launcher server browser. Then you still have a chance to load the required mod. But I do think this is like diving in the deep end. It's indeed better to find candidate communities/units through the mentioned channel. So then you know their server name and what they do. Server information in the browser is usually not that clear to base your choice on.

Thats definitely not default behaviour, so its gotta be the scenario youre playing. Unload any mods you may have running and try the editor, see if you can engage normally with vehicles and inventories.
