We've just released the Teeny-Tiny hotfix for Below Zero on Steam, Epic, PlayStation, Xbox, and Discord.

This update addresses a color banding issue, fixes ambient water particle effects, and allows new screenshots to be cycled through after deleting older screenshots.

We're dropping a quick announcement to let everyone know that we need to exclude some more devices that we initially thought would able to run the game. These devices are experiencing a lot of graphical issues because of their GPU, and unfortunately, that’s not something we'll be able to fix.

Hello Subnauts,

We recently released a hotfix for PC and Android that addresses a security-related concern raised to us by Unity. You can read more about the specific issue here: https://unity.com/security/sept-2025-01/

While the update patches out the flaw, Unity has said that, to their knowledge, no one has exploited the issue to date, and no players have been at risk.

To help ensure that this security flaw can never be exploited on Subnautica or Below Zero, we have updated Unity following the guidelines provided. We have also had to make the difficult decision to disable all legacy and alternative branches of Subnautica and Below Zero, as there is no way for us to patch out the security issue on each of those branches individually.

If you play Subnautica or Below Zero with any mods on our legacy or alternative branches, you should disable or remove them before launching the game after the update to preserve your save files. You will need to check that the mods you want to play are updated to work with the most recent version of the game.

For our speedrunning community, this also means that the speedrunners branch has been disabled. We understand that this will affect speedruns moving forward, but the security and safety of all our players is our highest priority.

Hi Subnauts

There's been a lot of chatter the last few days about our publisher, Krafton's, AI-first news and how that might impact Subnautica 2.

It's best to think of the relationship between a publisher and studio a little like a library.

The publisher (in this case, Krafton) has a ton of tools available in that library. And the studio can choose to use the tools that are most useful to them. For example, we use a platform to help us look across multiple social channels at once, instead of checking each one manually.

We're not using generative AI to develop Subnautica. We have an "AI system" in the game that is similar to ones that have always been in our games: the creature behavior trees. You can see more about how that works, and who crafted it in our Leviathan Dev Vlog. But it's not "AI" as you might think of it (Dev Vlog here: #announcements message )

It is very unlikely that that will change. We already have a lot of our teams, pipelines, and systems set up.

But, ultimately, our relationship with Krafton is the same as it has always been. They provide us access to valuable tools and resources and we choose which are the right fit for our projects.

We’re pushing out our first hotfix for Subnautica 2! 🔥

This hotfix addresses some frequent issues we have seen, thanks to reports from the community.

The changes include: Improved startup error and support pop-ups for AMD graphics cards and DirectX 12 crashes, a fix for infrequent Ping feature crashes, and some adjustments to analytics.

This hotfix may take some time to appear around the world and will be available on Xbox once it clears certification.

Update: To enable crossplay between Steam and Xbox while waiting for for Xbox to certify the build, go to Subnautica 2's settings on Steam, then Betas, and choose the "crossplay" branch from the drop down menu. The update should now be live on Xbox!

Our second hotfix for Subnautica 2 is here! 🔥

The changes include: more Silver and Troilite resource areas, adjusted Hammerhead behavior, bug and crash fixes, improved performance for Epic settings, and adjustments to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Additional changes are currently being worked on to address community feedback on creature balance and overall graphics performance. We will continue to roll out those changes in the coming weeks.

This hotfix may take some time to roll out worldwide and will be available on Xbox once it has cleared certification.

We’ve made a couple of updates to the Subnautica Discord.

First of all, you’ve probably already spotted that the channel layout has moved around a bit. With the Subnautica community getting bigger every day, we wanted to make it easier for new and existing members to find the information they need. We know this might take a little getting used to for those of you that have been here for a while!

With that in mind, the rules have also had a bit of a refresh, with some additional info and key links as well. You can find that under #rules.

You’ll also notice that we’ve added a few new channels!

#role-assignment now makes it easier to become a DevWatcher and get alerted whenever a developer goes live with a stream, and you can also let us know which platform you’re playing Subnautica on.

#subnautica-ps and #subnautica-xbox are there for any platform-specific discussion and help, and for you to find other players with the game on console.

#📺streams-and-videos has also been added for linking to any Subnautica or Below Zero content that you are creating. Be aware, that your videos must follow the #rules (i.e. be family-friendly)

Hello everyone! One of the first things I did when I joined the studio as QA Lead was identify the need for a proper bug tracking database. After a lot of talk, research and set up, today I launched Jira for the studio with the first project being Below Zero that will use this new tool. That being said from a little bit of time bugs will not be publicly viewable. Jira isn't really set up out of the box to do that but fear not we do have one of our engineers working on a solution that will make the database viewable again by the public.

Us moving to this new tool is going to help us as we work toward bringing Below Zero to release, it is faster and easier to use for the devs. When the work is done to make it public once again we will update everyone on where to go so that you can see it. For now Favro is still there and bugs we were looking at are still up. Task tracking is still being done in Favro, so if you go to the site to see what new tasks have been added you can still do that

• When you die, re-spawning is indefinite
• When you attempt to save, saving is indefinite
• While you play, terrain stops generating below you
• While you play, fish stop spawning and resources stop appearing

If you are reliably encountering this bug on your Xbox One S, we would like to hear from you! Useful information to let us know when you message:

• How much space is left on your hard drive?
• Console region
• Console language
• Game language
• How long you were playing before you experienced the issue
• How long has it been since your last save
• Area in game where the issue occurred

Hello, with Below Zero launching it begins a new page in the book of community playtesting for Subnautica.

Our main goal of the playtesting group is to work closely with the Subnautica Team to troubleshoot known issues as well as test new features before they go live to the public.

Often we ask our playtesters for feedback on how we can improve certain aspects of our games as well as what players are interested to see in the future.

As we continue to improve the future for both Subnautica and Below Zero we're seeking eager community members to help us pave the way for the franchise. If you think you have what it takes, please fill out the Google form below!

This is a new playtesters form, meaning if you had filled out our previous form and still are interested in joining, you will need to reapply. There is a fixed upper limit to the number of play testers admitted to the PT Groups at any given time and if you are chosen, will be contacted via Discord.

Just for full transparency for everyone, I wanted to give an explanation for the major reason that we change nicknames with special characters on the server. This is less due to its ability to be pinged (though that is part of it), but because for any of our community members using screen readers or voice over, it makes it impossible to comprehend. I just wanted to make sure that's clear for anyone who has a nickname changed for this specific reason. Typically, we'll only remove the special characters, and replace them with the letter they're trying to emulate, but if you'd prefer a different nickname, we're more than happy to adjust, as long as it doesn't incorporate special characters.

For anyone interested, you can hear what special characters (or, what some people believe are "decorative text") sounds like for those using voice over / screen readers. It's incredibly enlightening and should give you an idea of why we change them.

This update also includes a fix for endgame dialogue in Sam's storyline, and some minor bug fixes related to translation and text sizing.

This update will be coming soon for PS4, Switch, and all other PC storefronts.

P.S. If you use console commands on PC, they're now even easier to access by using shift+enter!

Once you've done this, you can re-enable wifi and reboot your game and everything should load fine, including your saves. We are looking into what is causing it to crash now, but this is the immediate work around.
