You won't be able to see other peoples houses ( at least based on current dev info ) unless that person invites you onto their land. Housing is instanced in some form. So you can't walk down the road and see other player houses. But .. they have said there is no loading screen to visit someone's house. Not 100% sure how they will achieve that myself though

I have been watching the chat a bit and I am not sure if this was mentioned but to my understanding some of the core makers come from Blizzard and Riot. These games have different payment concepts, such as monthly sub vs free to play but get the pretties if you want etc. I think this will give the makers a good insight on how that affects their players as well as the game itself. I think whichever way the makers choose to go, it will work out well.

Yes, and there are a number of games that allow you to do this, leaving you with the option of playing the game and transferring game resources to shop currency to get what you want over time or using your real money to make the same purchase.

In my experience, the shops sold cosmetics and nothing that would give you an unfair advantage; that way money wasn't necessarily a better way to get things or win in any capacity, it was just faster if you couldn't wait for some reason or if you had more money than time available to you.

Loot boxes definitly need to NOT be in any game. Those are awful, but I can appreciate cosmetic items. It is hard to say what other options the game might hold such as mounts, seeds, etc

Blizzard seems to do well enough with selling mounts after the player learns the skills in game as a cash influx

Really is a divisive situation. Without some form of ongoing income games die, if they rely on continued transactions.

Honestly, its amazing games can continue to add features and simply rely on continued buyers

Say like NMS. Its continued to garner profits for 5 years, with nearly every update.

However, those kind of economic models really only work with certain kinds of games.

I understand a lot of player's concerns with microtransactions in games, and depending how MTs are rolled out, it can literally make or break a game. I once did a research project on how dangerously aggressive MTs can be. Here are a few facts based on that infographic project I did in 2019.

🪙 Depending on the Microtransaction model, some games (especially mobile games), can be profitable even if only 6% of an active player base (of at least 1 million players or more) are "addictively" spending on microtransactions. They do this through “price shrouding,” which is introducing a in-game currency system to confuse players to making large-monetary purchases to get enough in-game currency to buy in-game content.

🎮 69% of the entire gaming consumer market finds the cost of most microtransactions affordable and acceptable.

🕒 Timegating microtransaction models which cap a player's ability to play after they reach a "game over" (similar to how arcade games work) incentive players to buy a type of token to keep playing. One such game using this model rakes in $4.2 million per day.

👗 Games with single-purchase item markets will often price items anywhere between $2.00 to $20.00 per item. Fortnite which sells skins la carte averages over $2 billion a year using this model.

🎁 Loot Boxes are believed to created gambling impulses in minors to get the items they want. EA’s FIFA series is notoriously bad for this, and has even provoked some countries to banning the microtransaction model outright.

🐶 Some microtransaction models will often only offer a certain item for a very limited time to drive revenue and increase prices. World of Warcraft have pets and mounts as expensive as $24.99 per item and only appears for a few weeks on their digital marketplace.

That being said, I believe some games can be equally successful and not overbearing with microtransactions. I am hopeful that Palia will pursue a model that encourages purchases from those who can't play very frequently, but are dedicated to the game, and mostly rewards those who play steadily outside of microtransactions.

As I see it, depends on the item. As a comparison, Overwatch once ran a charity for an exclusive skin (which cost $15) and all proceeds when to breast cancer research. In the two week window it was available, they raised over $12 million dollars, but that was for charity so that is a good example of an LTO. On the flipside, Blizzard ran "virtual tickets" for those who could not attend Blizzcon live, and they included items for all of their active games, but if you only played one game actively, you would be spending $60 just for your game's one and only bonus item, and virtual tickets were really only available for three months total. That is a case of a more nefarious LTO.

I understand the conflict between wanting people to see what you've made, and wanting to make sure it's something that really completes the mission you've laid out for yourself first.

The problem with open testing phases is that little to no testing is done in the process. Many players see an open test more as the start of the game. For developers, you can rather test the mass suitability of the mechanics or the stability of the servers. Real bug fixing in detail is hardly possible. To be able to work really precisely, small groups with direct communication to the developers are much more productive.

I participated in a closed alpha many years ago. There were weekly test tasks from the developers with a subsequent test report and a weekly to 14-day voice conference for direct feedback. Just doesn't work in large groups.

So, as Odd-Ball said, Open Tests serve a different function from closed tests. I would first, before continuing, preface this that my role - seen here as on my server profile, Pre-Alpha Tester - means that anything I know is under a Non-Disclosure Agreement at the moment. I am legally bound not to reveal anything pertaining to Palia or its testing environment.

What I can do and say is this: I think you're approaching an Open Test from the wrong angle, friend. Whether they're looking for us to report bugs or not, there will always be those who say "hey, I found a problem!" and post about it. Those who want to just play, and see it "more as the start of the game" will no doubt be able to do that. You can't enforce human behavior like that so easily, after all.

To give you an idea, a public figure is that the number of Pre-Alpha Testers ranged from the initial 200, followed by another 1200. You can scroll back for these figures in chat, or search them; they're confirmed by S6 Staff somewhere. I will admit I don't know what size your testing group was, but that is the publicly-known number for the size of ours.

I don't think people can be made to sit down at any scale beyond a couple dozen, personally. You can ask them, but that doesn't mean they'll listen. That's nothing specific, just my philosophy. You'd need something to leverage them with.

And since we're looking at an Open Test, I doubt that'd be happening anyway.
