It's just more tradition than anything strict Gm (game master) is just in every game but in D&D you are DM (Dungeon master) and in Cthulhu you are SK (Secret Keeper) less popular or Just Narrator in Savage worlds and so on.

plenty of games without combat that are fun, plenty of games with tension that don't have combat. you can have cool mechanics that are similar to combat but not exactly that. I think portal is a great example of some things you can do when you think of a novel mechanic and milk it for all the fun its worth

That's always a tricky one. I think we can agree flying can be very liberating and fun, but there's also the chance exploration would kinda be ruined if you could just fly over everything/everyone.

And if a Community is large enough, contributes enough, and provides the required too-much-to-quantify resources, then that community can get a non-instanced building as part of the world. Because, at some level, the players want to leave a mark on the world beyond what is in their player instance.

I'm a fan of Gamers Nexus for some of their content as they do their due diligence to point out how things are in the hardware space. Though Steve does tend to fall prey to tautology..

A young apothecary brews poisons in his basement, away from prying eyes. Weaponsmiths craft weapons of terror, shown only to those with the most coin in the back alleys. Armorsmiths begin crafting the most durable metals into impenetrable defenses. Tensions begin to run high amongst neighbors competing to sell their wares. Soon, its an all out war between neighborhoods. Humans... are human after all.

Innocent, beautiful. What were they doing, destroying each other and and this world they call home? They looked around at the damage they had caused, the pain they inflicted. This wasn't supposed to happen. What went wrong? Realization began to dawn upon a few as the first shimmerflys landed on them and they once again disappeared from the world. It was them. Humans. This had happened once before, and now was again. Terror gripped some as they began swinging their weapons, desperate to escape their fate, only to disappear as well. Einar shakes his head and sighs. Perhaps it was too soon to think humans would have learned their lesson.

At first Einar fishes up an old boot, chuckles and sets it carefully aside. Humans, such strange creatures, losing their parts so freely. Einar re-baits the hook and throws it in the reeds, where a pine tree's shade has created a nice cool spot, just like the fishes love. There, movement and a bite! Something heavy is tugging on the line. Einar spreads his legs wide and turns his torso sideways, bracing himself and starts the long process of weaing a big one. Suddenly where the fish ought to be, the water starts to bubble and steam, a noxious odor rises. Sulfur. A red glow, dim at first eminates from under the water. Einar's fishing line goes slack as the light starts to approach. Brighter and brighter, faster and faster. A glint of shining metal in the rising sunlight and a crash on the little wooden pier.
Einar confronted what looked to be a golden coloured fish. At first it lay there in the splinters of its crater on the pier, umoving, light waning. Then the light began to pulse bright, and brighter again. A flash, and the world went red.

Einar stood up straight, rigid as a rock, the hat falling over to one side. Eyes gleaming red he said: "Execute order 66."

"A shimmerfly lands on Elouisa's post box as she is fetching her morning mail, then flies over to her nose, and off again to the direction of the ruins she was studying yesterday. A gust of wind sweeping from the east brings a cold chill with it. What unusual activity does this day bring with it?"

At first it was just more boots than usual. Then a ruby necklace. Metal pipes. A waterlogged trunk full of clothes. The things Einar began fishing up started to concern the locals. More stopped by the lake every day to see the pile of 'stuff' beside Einar grow. Something wasn't right. The townsfolk wouldn't pollute the lake like this. And a ruby necklace? Who in their right mind would throw that away? Something was going on. Something was down there. This went on for several days.

"Enough is enough!" A young Palian boy finally shouted. "I want to see what's down there."

"But how? You can't breathe underwater genius." A girl chastised. This stumped the boy for a moment.

"I... may be able to help with that." The apprentice Apothecary spoke up. "I've created a water-breathing potion. Problem is... I need someone to test it." He said, holding a small bottle in his hands.

"Gimme that!" The young boy grabbed it, popped it open, and drank it before anyone could stop him. All at once he felt funny. He grabbed his throat, choking, before falling in the water. Screams and shouts erupted, calls for someone to save him. The apothecary slinked away before the crowd could turn on him. Hours passed, and some had stayed hoping he would be fine and surface. As nighttime fell, hope seemed lost, that is until something started shining brightly in the water.

"Look LOOK!" The young boy surfaced, gasping for air.

"You guys... you guys will NEVER believe what is down there!" He yelled, holding up a glowing plant. "There's a whole CITY! We've GOT to get more of that potion and see what else there is!" But the apothecary was nowhere to be found. The city remained a mystery until the next apothecary could once again make exploration possible.

Within the postbox there was a letter, with a picture attached. Written with handwriting mostly resembling chicken feet doing the salsa it said: "We saw you, please come back, stay, its lonely here" the picture depicts a bowl of brains?.. no, ramen! What could this mean? "I was at the ruins yesterday" Elouisa mutters to herself. She grabs her kit containing brushes and a pick as well as some sample jars. "I wonder if this is Auni's idea of a joke?... though he doesn't usually come around here with the mail until closer to noon."

In her thoughts, she walks over to the ruins, rubbing her nose. A warm spot where the shimmerfly had landed started to tickle and it won't go away, besides, it's now starting to smell like Ramen all of a sudden! How bothersome. "Should've grabbed a scarf with me, this wind is treacherous today, I've hardly left and am already frozen to the bone."

Elouisa walks over to the ruins of a tower, a particularly stubborn pilar of rocks ending in a crumbling arc can be seen for a good half a mile around. The shimmerfly lands on top of the stone arch and as Elouisa walks closer it flutters down beside it where a small pile of rubble mark the remains of where the kitchen hearth would've been.

Walking closer, the smell of spices grows stronger, and the feeling of cold receeds slightly. "Must be the mere thought of a warm bowl of ramen.." she mutters "I wish I hadn't forgotten my food basket at home".

Clearing the pile of rubble by the tower without fully understanding why, Elouisa started to hear a faint sound, like a song in the wind. "No hunger
No sleep except to dream
Mild and warm
Safe from all harm
Calm" it went, or so she thought. A strange, soothing sound, yet somehow mournful.

Redoubling her efforts now, she dug away at the rubble finally discovering brass latch. More she dug to reveal a wide section of wood belonging to a trap door. Heaving and panting, both legs braced hard against the treatcherous rocks, Elouisa inched the trap door up just enough for a bit of rubble to slip in and jam in the newly formed crack. Now the sounds growing stronger and the inviting smell of a bowl of ramen growing irresistible. The singing stops and with a gasp someone exlaims "Oh, there you are! How wonderful, please do come in, I was just about to set the table, you are perfectly on time."

From that day on Elouisa would not be seen carrying a basket on her outings, and she always came home with a smile.
