Honestly the number one thing you need for Maws, is patience....
2 through 5, major zone size hook, Sushi, Fish Stew, and fisherman's Brew....
Number 6 is realizing you hooked a lot more than you thought, they was all those escaped lake sharks...

Fishing at the dock with a group so I keep a friend boost, I loose about 3 "sharks" and catch 1 Maws in an hour. So I'd say on the fast end of pulls your seeing about 2 to 3 an hour. The catch difficulty is the problem. It eats rod health fast. Moves fast. Does everything lake shark does on a slightly faster timer. So if your loosing a lot of lake sharks its just practice for MAWs... it gets easier as you catch more.

I feel that... I believe it took me a week... for both the infected and the star one. Ran from the dock all the way up to the mushroom area and back, Jumped home and back, to reset all the spots, rinse repeat... probably 20 hours to get the patterns down. The only hint that anyone gave besides buffs that helped me... reel diagonally. I.e. the lake shark and Maws move either left or right, and then flip. Reel while moving left/right. They usually don't switch their direction. If you spot the dash, just reel and move that direction, till they flip out of the water, if they stop moving left/right they are about to flip.

New to the game! Can I just buy the higher end fishing rods or have someone craft it for me? Or do I have to do mining and woodcutting etc?

as you level up your fishing skill, you'll be able to buy recipes for the upgraded fishing rods from Einar! The recipes will appear at your workbench, where you'll need a few resources to craft the new rod.
I believe the first upgrade is at fishing level 3, for the Standard fishing rod.

I love "Skilling" and being very attached to one or two tasks in a game rather then them all. so hopeful this is the case

once you have owned a resource, you are able to request it from other players, though you can only make 4 requests per IRL day.
i would recommend leveling the skills fairly evenly until around level 10, though this will come naturally as you play the game.
reason being, the resources needed to craft the Standard rod are copper bars and sapwood planks. the recipe for these require mining and foraging level 2, and this raises as you get to iron tools and so on.
for the highest (exquisite) fishing rod (recipe obtainable at level 9) you'll need palium bars (smelting recipe obtainable at mining level 6) and flow planks (sawmill recipe obtainable at foraging 7).

elderwood has the best selling fish even without glow worm; just buy some worms at zekis and go to the ocean to fish sharks and ancient koi all day

it can be tiring to get used to sharks but they rake in good money for how common they are

alternatively zeki underground has almost always people fishing so you don't need to move at all to profit quickly

I have a mining etiquette question.
I know if I find silver, gold, or platinum, to flare it and wait, but…how long should I idle there, waiting to see if anyone shows up?

Last week I waited until the flare expired, mined the ore, and moved on…only to then see chat replies from someone looking for the ore.

I don’t want to keep other people from a limited resource, but I also don’t have unlimited time to wait in game.

What’s the best approach?

Personally, I call it out, flare, mine and move on. The ore stays for a while once it's been mined by you, so you're just starting the timer, not removing it immediately.

There are 12 uncommon fish catchabke in kilima :
In lake : prism trout and striped sturgeon (worms), enchanted pup fish (glow worm)
In rivers : channel catfish and rainbow trout (no bait), freshwater eel and stickleback (worms), indigo lamprey and kilima graying (glow worms)
In ponds : cantakerous koi (no bait), mirror carp (worms), stalking catfish (glow worm).

The best advice I got for fishing was from a YouTube video that said you don't have to keep holding the R2 trigger to keep the fish, you can release it and reset the little brackets until they turn green and then press the R2 trigger again

That lets the bar refresh to make it easier to catch those jumpy fish

There isn’t really “best” spots but the best fish to try and get is a maw. Which I believe is caught in saltwater areas of elderwood with glow worms

i will say saltwater elderwood with glow worms and grabbing all bubble spots is pr dang good money wise, as long as you get good enough at lake shark to not lose any lol. when i do a fishing run like that finishing with a full inventory of star fish can net me like 17-20k

I still need to catch a Maws for the Essence anyway. Not gonna Lie I think the worst part of Fishing in the elderwoods is that You have to catch every fish at least Twice to get the achievements. Especially since the Maws is extremely Rare at Legendary Status. Having to get that one is kinda killing my love of fishing given how I keep on getting disappointed I haven't caught one yet.

Generally worms scale on value of the food, so more expensive = more worms. The only thing that changes based on type of food is the output of fertilizer, with sweet foods giving QualityUp fertilizer and savory foods giving HarvestBoost fertilizer

The underground is good but Elderwoods Saltwater with Friends, Fishermans Brew, Glow worms, and the Safe zone boost hook is also great. If you can get multiple perfect catch you will level up relatively fast. Without the Friends multiplier I can level up every hour and that is past level 10. After level 10 it takes 5,000 XP to level up so decent overall.

I just take what they max out on - I have to hit ogpuu multiple times to get one or two fish steak, so pressure and coordination and fighting my keyboard makes it hard when my character doesn’t want to run. I use EW bows and metal bows to minimize needed shots to get the steaks like you mentioned.

Focus activities like that is a strain, but more bearable than fishing.

they can drop all kilima fish, star and unstar, any fish they 'catch' can be added to bundles normally. I keep 5-6 bears all the time and regularly get epics. In fact I have my fishing bundle items completed without actually catching several of them 😛

Where to fish depends on which fish you want to catch, the thundering eel for the bulletin board for example can be caught in bahari rivers using normal worms, at any time of the day.

I don't know what they meant either but the only way to level fishing is by fishing. Recipes give cooking xp. Glow worm fish give most xp followed by worm fish followed by no bait fish. And fish rarity also increases xp gained, as does fishing for starred fish in hotspots (the little bubbles)

So I've been meaning to ask, how is it that people are able to get 100x Maws for cooking parties? I've never seen one and my partner who is a fishing addict has caught 3 total. The thought of someone being able to get 100 for a cooking party just seems unreasonable. Is there something I'm missing?

There's nothing you're missing, they're super rare. I cant say for certain but I would guess for those kinds of parties multiple people contribute to that 100 total. I highly doubt one person has 100 maws at a time

If you let a fish bite but don't reel it in, then pull your rod back after it goes away, you save your worm. If it's a fish you do want, it'll keep biting until you reel it in

To help with worms, you can not catch fish that aren't the pupfish. Let them swim away completely, reel in your line, recast. Repeat until it is the pupfish. No worms used.

The fastest way would be to mine anything you see :-) It should go fairly fast anyways, you only need 440 XP points for level 3, small stones give 5, small coppers 6, medium twice as much if you can already get them. Clay gives 10 XP per node.

Conversely I ran around bahari hitting ore nodes I saw, like 12 total? and hunted about 10 deer while absentmindedly picking up shells(12), coral(2), dragonbeard (5)) and oysters(27) off the beach and got 2 green, 3 yellow, 2 blue and a 3 red eggs.

Yesterday I did a palium run and got no eggs. It almost feels like I'm being punished for doing focused hunts vs just randomly running around grabbing things.

You do not need to fish for any of the eggs.. You can, but you don't have to. Blue eggs also drop from foraging, specifically oysters and things around bahari shore were good to me.

For me I find that the Major Safe Zone Size Booster Is a life saver along with the Fishermans brew. The amount of perfect catch I get when having both even with the Lake sharks makes that investment so worth it.

For the regular version a ton of glow worms should be the only "trick". I've had luck at mitana and in the shmole cave too. If you need it starred however it's an entirely different level of luck lol. And yes, if you're not confident in fishing skills, definitely equip the size boost for your hook, she's a fighter !

Just in case you don't know, you need to use the bubble spots in order to catch starred fish. It's just the type of fish that you can't control. At least not beyond using the right bait in the right place.

You're in the right spots on the bubble nodes, it's just all RNG on whether or not a pupfish spawns.

Nothing affects the spawn points of the fish, but you will definitely have a better fishing experience by upgrading your rod

Edit: You can use Angler's Fortune to possibly increase epic and legendary spawns, that's in the Kilima Catalogue for Kilima Coins

I'd like to complain about fishing! I despise this skill in the first place so I avoid it at all costs. When I finally decide to try and complete my angler and master angler accomplishments, I ONLY catch common fish. The uncommon, rare, epic, and legendary fish JUST DON'T EVER SPAWN. I seriously feel like there needs to be better balance between the people who jump to finish everything in 10 mins, vs the casual players. It just discourages me more and more

Oh I see! I ask because for example, ancient fish will only have a chance spawn if you're using glow worms. So if you never switch to glow worms, you will not have a chance spawn at ancient fish or other glow worm fish.

You would only get the no-bait spawns or regular worm spawns (if that is what is equipped)

From what I’ve gathered, eating Fisherman’s Brew is about the only thing that can boost fishing

Fisherman's Brew increases safe zone size only, there isn't anything that can change the spawn of fish though. That's all RNG.

There's an Angler's Fortune potion that affects epic and legendary spawn chances slightly, but no other tiers are affected by that potion.

There are some fishing foods that give you a boost (sushi, sashimi, trout dinner and fisherman's brew, iirc). There are also some booster hooks you can buy from Einar. Using those should help.
Also, since that's something that's confusing for people sometimes: When the fish jumps out of the water or is outside of the brackets, stop reeling in. Move the brackets so it stays between them, and only restart reeling when the fish is between the brackets and in the water again.

I don't get how this works. I am trying to keep the fish in the brackets and I can't seem to do it. I stop pressing my mouse button, then move the brackets around teh fish, and the darn thing keeps moving. I don't get why this is so difficult for me. I even just lowered my mouse pointer speed again, to try not to overshoot the darn thing. I'm trying to catch a piranha for Jel's quest.

You can move the brackets while you hold the mouse button as long as it's between your brackets, just let go of the button if the bobber or the fish leaves the brackets, or if it jumps out of the water.

Yeah, I'd been doing that. My issue is getting the brackets to stay around the darn fish. I miss more fish than I catch, because I can't get the brackets to stay around the fish. The timer thingy keeps going down if the fish isn't inside the brackets, even if I'm not reeling it in.

Well... I tried again and I got what I needed! I guess I need to not try for perfect catches! lol

Honestly, just go up and down this route (I use the fast travels to woods and docks) and rinse and repeat, lots of fisherman’s brew too. Also, instead of selling your starred river sharks, use them for your glow worm farm, they give you 11 glow worms per grilled fish 🙂

It’s a really tedious and repetitive route (especially at the docks when you have to play Tetris with your rod placement to fit in some of the bubbles lol) but it does pay off eventually!
