typically if you do not have ingredients it greys out, meaning you do not have the ingredients to cook it .. once you do it highlights so that you can cook it.

If it is however just one missing ingredient, it will prompt you , not to proceed as its missing one item

And when I say Souls-Like I mean emphasis on stamina for dodging like twice before being completely defenseless

I don't think the combat is gonna be heavy based on the temples..
