Yes, as long as you have been collecting your seasonal candles consistently before you get the Pass, you should be perfectly fine, especially with the added bonus of the season pass, you are able to miss up to 16 days.

Accessing areas for which you do not have the proper IAP is frowned upon and will likely get you in trouble. TGC specifically went through the trouble to make it so players can’t easy chibi fall into the area.

The cape you are thinking of is likely the Little Prince Asteroid Cape, which is red on the inside and has long sleeves. It was a collab IAP and is not available for purchase, and will not return unless Sky gains rights to collaborate again.

How do the elder masks work? I saw something about a shield it has and to “recharge” you basically go to the elders temple at the realm you wear it to and you get a shield that pops up for it in your wings

That’s pretty much it! Equipping the Elder Mask lets you withstand so many hits (from flying rocks, crabs, or 1 krill attack) before the shield breaks and discharges the Mask.

You can recharge the shield back up by visiting the respective Elder at their temple after meditating there, or by calling them down in Orbit.

A shield icon will appear on your cape meter to let you know that your shield is charged and ready to tank some damage for you!

Seasons last just over 2 months, typically you collect the spirits it has and watch as the story unfolds.
The Season guide has story Quests, these are evenly spread out across the Season's duration, so weeks intervals till next Quest is unlocked to play

You can earn 5 seasonal candles a day as a f2p, 1 from collecting four waxes (linked above by ginko) and completing the 4 daily tasks home shrines.

In the home constellation you can see the season constellation where you can purchase the new spirits cosmetics for the seasonal candles you'll collect over the duration of the season.
F2p can only have the items in the main lines without the Season Icon
With the Season pass you get a additional 1 season candle daily and can unlock the Pass locked items including the ultimate gifts from the guide.

There are a variety of ways you can get Hearts, including:
