No, not always. Some updates are forced, because there may be features or patches that everyone has to have. But sometimes you can remain on an old patch for a while.

The ones that have the icon is a shepherd. This is just an indication of how friendly you are to strangers I guess? If you have noticed it on the top right corner of your friend's constellation there's a heart shaped icon too. This is where you can check what your "mark" is 🙂

No, the icon represents a new player. Only players who have reached shepherd status can see the icon.
The ranking is mysterious, because we have not been told how it works and that is on purpose. Just be kind to others.

The beta build went out at 530am, I was definitely asleep (contrary to popular belief) and have been buried in meetings and other tasks today that take precedence. I'll get something posted shortly once I gather the change list from design/eng.

Not every build update needs detailed release notes. Light notes are usually included in the app description of "what to test" or "what's new" (varies by platform) but we are limited by the number of characters. When the test reqs exceed that char limit, I post more elaborate release notes in discord.

The absolute best thing you can do as a tester is download the latest update as soon as it's available and log in to play like you would normally on Live.

I thought they were meant to be a failsafe for people who got split during the races or joined a friend in the later half of the race so they could still get a candle, but I don't think I've seen them successfully perform that function on any of my runs up until now, so they just feel like they're adding an extra unwanted delay onto the candle runs in Valley

there's still a bit of a cutscene at the end when you either collect all the light fragments in the stadium or when they time out -- my main complaint there is that the wait to actually get your candle and go through the doors is even longer now, and i find collecting those light fragments (or even just waiting them out) to feel like a chore i'm not really enjoying (assuming they're not actually functioning properly in making sure people get a candle when things go wrong)

@rich stratus bruh you know downloading APKs is against the Terms of Service, right? It could cause a lot of performance, account and malware issues for you. from how the previous seasonal entrances were designed, the loading zone for the next area shouldn't actually be physically there until the season starts properly, even if you OOB'd past the physical wall that's there -- hitting the wind wall was just a sign that you went past the spot that was supposed to cause you to load into the map
