I've seen my friends who never played platforming games say that this was the hardest level in the game sooo

They just didn't understand it. If you proceed with that level correctly, the jumps you need to do are trivial. The problem many young players have is that they don't care about the lore, so they just ignore the history panels and try to proceed without them. In this level, reading each history panel does something. I'm actually surprised to learn that it's possible to complete that level without doing that.

There are actually multiple ways to make the climb without filling the tower! I loved doing it while playing solo/offline so I could visit the cloth whale in the side room

In theory, yes. But playing together with a specific friend is a bit tricky. Journey has random matchmaking, looking for people that play on the same platform as you and are near you (in the game and per IP afaik)
There are some guides and tips for how to meet up with a specific person, but Journey isn't really designed for that. It's intended that you meet other travelers and just journey together with them for a while and make a connection that way

Journey is an experience, start to finish
it's an exploration in how minimalistic storytelling and communication can be while still being incredibly touching (perhaps even more so)

Sky is an MMO, an online game - designed for mobile, no less - that lives off being played and replayed again and again
so it is less minimalistic, more to do, more to explore, but also more to grind, more to communicate
less of a sophisticated experience, but with a bit more replayability (tho Journey is also highly replayable)

Imo Sky is wayyy more replayable than Journey. Because Journey is meant to be a one time experience which u will remember forever. Where Sky is meant to be a glorified Social Media (kinda).

Journey is a lonely game, i play it once in a while in mobile, you are lucky if you encounter a white robed one and lead you, unlike sky many people are willing to take your hand

In Journey it's impossible to meet up with more than one person at once. But there is a wide variety in people you might meet. They may be complete beginners in a red cloak. They may have run the whole thing 15 times and be wearing white. And either one of those might be busy doing their own thing or might welcome company and do what you want. It's very varied.

You're much more likely to encounter other players in Sky compared to Journey. I don't think it's a bad thing - in fact, I feel that the loneliness of a solo adventure, or a fleeting connection with a companion, only adds to the atmosphere the game is trying to create.

Haven't played journey myself yet, so this might be wrong, but I think you can unfreeze those pieces of fabric to the right of your screen (by calling I think, but am not 100% sure there) and use those to go up.

That is absolutely correct. All frozen fabric can be temporarily unfrozen by calling close to them, or just by standing/floating next to them. They'll behave as if they weren't frozen while you're there, allowing you to use them to traverse the landscape as normal.

Until you finish a chapter anything you get isn't saved with your progress. If you want to keep whatever you got, you must finish the chapter you got it in.

I was heartbroken when I helped someone through the long open field with a guardian hovering over it, and they got caught and lost some of their scarf. From what I could see they knew not to run at that point but accidentally pressed the wrong button, or had a controller failure. Up to that point they'd had a very long scarf.

The game does save your progress but on a level basis. It saves the last level you have been and not what you do at that level. So if u almost complete a level but then quit the game and come back you have to do that level from the start.

Each level in Journey except the last one should take less than 30 minutes. Though you might spend an hour on one if you're determined to find every last collectable.

Well, it's possible to grab a companion's PS name if you watch the credits, where it shows the username of players you journeyed with during that session. Then you can friend them and arrange more meet ups, or possibly recognize them in the credits sequence if you happen to run into them again. (It's not very likely, sure, but still possible if you put forth the effort )

I want to play Journey some day but I know I won't ever get my T.V. to work with a PlayStation. I've heard lots of good things about it but I've always wondered about the Guardians... what happens if they snatch away your entire scarf? I know in Sky if Dark Dragons snatch all your winged lights away you get sent to a pity room. Is that also true for Journey?

Guardian rips your scarf. By the time you meet your first guardian, you have a long enough scarf that it probably isn't going to take all of it. I suppose you could intentionally play the game keeping the scarf as short as possible, and getting hit by as many guardians as possible, just to see what happens. I'd imagine you just get tossed in the air as normal. Maybe I'll try it.

War Machines will tear away a bit of your scarf every time, and you can indeed lose all your scarf after enough hits. You'll get flung around as normal when hit after that point, yes.

There's no pity room/game over screen, though, because it's completely possible to play the game without a scarf! There's always a way to continue progressing forward without flying; usually in the form of helpful cloth strips you can use to float up along, or cloth creatures who will carry you

i played journey for the first time today and that's exactly my feelings.

i hovered at the 'entrace' for the first guardian for probably 10 minutes before actually entering

I came to play Journey after Sky so when I saw that there's this spooky area after the sliding area, I knew that there's gonna be something like the krills in Sky. But what I didn't expect is the jumpscare that happens at the start. I literally jumped out of my chair lol.

And then the rest of the level I was so scared that I avoided ALL the guardians and managed to get the Achievement in my first playthrough.

no way. haha. That is exactly how I did the stage. to the T.
I knew something was coming because i had seen someone in here say "the krill like monsters in journey" so I knew something would be coming. So I was already terrified when I dropped down underground and I screamedddd at that jumpscare and from that point on I glued myself the right side walls to not risk any kind of contact with the guardians. When I came to that last bit before the "temple"(?), where two are pratolling the passage I took all my courage and get that ,...("Winged Light", i dont know the terms sorry) so that I could try flying over them and made it through without getting hit so I also got the achievement on my first playthrough because I was too scared to explore and just hid in the shadows lol . hi five
But my heart was pounding out of my chest.

I have several hundred hours in my Sky Game and I am STILL terrified of krill. And every time I feel a bit more calm I get krilled from a freak accident and am re-traumatized lol.
And the guardians felt the same.
It was the middle of the night when i was playing -i get ever more spooked then- and I seriously considered quitting Journey because it took me 10 minutes to even dare go further into the first Guardian area TT
I am not made for these kind of levels lol

Lol as for me in the last part, I stood at the slope for several minutes, trying to pin down their pattern and then try to avoid getting caught. I still got caught and then pressed W haard to slide as fast as I could.

Everyone agonises about how to get down that final slide without being hit. But then you find out that they can't hit you there even if they see and chase you. First time certainly does get the pulse rate up!

I think it's a glitch, but they can actually hit you. I've lost part of my scarf on that final slide exactly 1 time. Don't know how it happened, though. Went in with a loooong scarf (had gotten all lights up to that point), was sad and disappointed when I lost part of it. Was looking forward to having a really long scarf in the temple.

I do absolutely think it was a glitch, though, because I didn't see myself get hit at all, and I avoided the guardians through the entire level. Just my luck, I'd run into a glitch. 🤣

We'll be trudging along through the snow when they'll randomly go flying, hit by a guardian despite it being off in the distance on my screen. Makes it hard to make it through, since I have no clue where their guardians are, and they have no clue where mine are.

To get the white robe, you have to go to the right side of the chapter select where you can see long stripes of white clothes. Touch it and you'll get the white robe.

If Journey has ever let you wear the white cape, it should always show you the white cape in that position. If you can no longer choose the white cape, something is wrong with the game. Try rebooting your device.

If a spot is missing where they collected a glyph, it's possible the game didn't save that glyph being collected. Easiest method would be to go check that glyph and collect it again if it's not collected. If it is, and there are none that haven't been collected, then it's likely a glitch.

Do you keep white cloak if you start a new journey?

You can start a new journey with it, yes! Any time you visit the chapter select, you can switch between red or white by walking into the tall cloth banners that appear after collecting all symbols. However, you cannot start a totally fresh save file (1st tier cloak embroidery) as a white cloak.

1. On an existing save file where you've obtained it, visit the chapter select area to change into the white cloak.

2. Quit to the game title screen.

3. Start a new game. You'll be warned that any current progress will be lost; click "yes" to continue.

4. Tadah! You are now a white cloak right from the very beginning of the game!

In theory, yes, but it's a bit tricky. Journey pairs players together randomly if they're playing on the same system, are near each other ingame, and are near each other irl. There are some guides around the internet on how to connect with a specific person on purpose (tho I don't have any at hand right now).
But Journey wasn't really designed to play together with a specific person, the point of the game is to make a connection with random people you meet on the way with minimal communication.

Are you talking about the dark underground area? You can avoid the Guardians/War Machines there by sticking to the left side of the rooms! Their patrol paths stick towards the center, but you can also hide from their lights by using the tunnels/broken pieces as cover. (Be careful not to get spotted, though, because unlike Krill, you can't lose the attention of Guardians.)

yes, the ps3 method has been patched in ports, pc introduced a new version of the bug relating to quit to title. yes i know, your response is still valid.
also the trick requires an existing white robe save beforehand

But yes, it's impossible to start a completely fresh save with the white robe. (Apparently the texture for a 1st tier embroidery on a white cloak doesn't even exist in the game!) I'm sure there are some folks who are really devastated by that fact, haha.

fun fact: there's a white robe cheat that enables the wardobe forcefully without collecting anything and that actually gives you a 2nd tier wayfarer

Staying on the far left is easier than trying to dart between cover along the middle of the course. There's no cover but the Guardian doesn't look there. However, right at the end there's a very short piece where the Guardian can see you, so you have to time the final dash into the doorway at a time when the Guardian is not close.

Journey is not designed to be played constantly like Sky, but it is designed to be played more than once
The fun Journey provides is mostly focused on the very first and the occasional playthrough, but it doesn't need more than that. Journey is very minimalistic and that is part of what makes it so great.
It is a wonderful experience that I think everyone should experience at least once.

Those are definitely not other players. Unless the game substitutes in NPC models if you're offline, you can still see them all if you're not online (my first 2 runs, I didn't have internet, so speaking from experience).

It would make sense for them to do just that, though... After all, the first "player" we see is actually an NPC model. It would make sense for them to put in models to take the place of players if players are unavailable (aka, offline).

Right after you meditate with the first spirit and unlock the door, there is an NPC model that appears in silhouette in the bright light, far off through the doorway that walks away. Devs have said it's been out there to indicate this is where you can first run into players, and it is. The great carpet bridge is the first place you cna pair up with players.

True! White robes are associated with advance playing, and reb robes the opposite, but it isn't always accurate when judging another in-game companion at a glance. Although it's the most common community used terms, haha.

A skilled/veteran player still have the option to play as a red for the challenge, or by starting a new save, while a newbie with a completionist attitude can get a hold of the white robes for their second ever run.

I wish I could find the video where they talk about the multiplayer and all that. I remember the devs talking about the model that appears at the end of the first level, and about what their intention was when placing it. It's not a glitch, it's placed there intentionally, and I'm pretty sure it's visible to players offline.

The video might only be available in the TGC Collection's developer commentaries, though, which I don't currently have access to... I'd need to find my PS3 copy and all the cords to my PS3 in order to watch it again, and then it'd be difficult to share it.

However in the clip-scene that shows as you finish the game it includes their nicknames and icons in a page which is part of the credit sequence for the game. If you are alert you can remember the nickname, or perhaps take a screenshot.

So you cannot arrange who you play with, but perhaps you can contact them after you met them on your Journey.

Going to repost part of a journey theory from lore chat.
The guardians (also called War Machines) from the game are iconic, fearsome and mysterious.
They are flying stone creatures with a serpent like body, but with 3 pairs of wings.

It is also arguable for the face to resemble that of an owl, more so given there was once an older version of these guardians that resemble birds. Those were called beta war machines and miraculously are in the game. They are hidden in the race level.

I wonder if these may be related to the Quetzalcoatl (flying snake god), which is a "god of life, light and wisdom, lord of the day and the winds." (according to the wiki on Aztec mythology)

Any thoughts folks would like to share?

I tested the cloud game and it does feel like an experimental game rather than a full fledge one

During my playthrough, I wasn't really sure what I'm doing but just dragging my mouse around in the play area like crazy until I figured out that you're supposed to collect the clouds, and the white ones are the one you can control

Got a game over on the last of the 4 level realizing that you have to have a white cloud or it'll result to that. Dark clouds sap white cloud like they cancel each other out.

I do feel like the cloud flying mechanic in Sky is somewhat inspired from this game, but not the cloud collecting gameplay in general

And using art as a way to tell the story is great too

I play flower today on my ipad and I wish I have learned that I can change the control scheme

Anyways, it really does feel like a minimalist adventure-puzzle game and I don't see much difference on the flowers' functionality except the purple ones gives speed boost while the light blue is like hidden secrets that if you collect them the flower pots will have 1-3 petals near it on the menu screen.

I especially like the last level where you finally earn the ability to break the electricity tower thingies and you become a tree.

It's also nice that the bonus/credits level are somewhat of a reminiscent of the past levels too bringing elements of different things there too.

If you get three petals on all six of your flowers you get access to a special bonus level. And yes, that part at the end when you finally get your full strength gives an excellent feeling. It's a good counterpoint to the events at the end of Journey and Sky, which work differently. If you play it enough you'll find nod to Flow in there.

After u collect all of them there will be a place on the right side of chapter select where u will see some white clothes attached to a platform and floating. Go there and touch the cloth and you'll get the white robe.

the only 'cosmetic' is a white robe you can unlock that gives you flight energy that automatically recharges over time
besides that, no, journey doesn't have any cosmetics or currency
it's meant to be a standalone adventure experience, as minimal as possible, as artistic as possible, without any of these distractions

Apotheosis is my absolute favourite song of the Journey soundtrack. I love how it swells so epically as we ascend to the sky, and then mellows out to deep, resonant bells and gongs as we begin our final journey, only to begin playing an altered rendition of Nascence (my second fave) when we finally reach our destination and it sinks in that this is what it was all for. This is the end of our journey. It's an absolute experience, and I love it.

To be fair, Sky was a mobile game from its inception. Journey was a console game. It also has a much more simple design in totality, and doesn't have to focus as much energy on managing servers, as well as all the cosmetics.

However, yes, I Do wish Sky ran as well as Journey. Journey runs very smoothly, and I've yet to have any issues with it.

Sky is a very resource hungry for a mobile game that's why it is extremely hard to optimise for the low end android devices, unlike Journey which is a PC/Console game first.

Journey runs very well on PS3 and PS5. A little (but not much) better than the Steam version. As was remarked above, it doesn't depend on online servers every time you enter a new area (only for conducting interaction with another player), so it runs better than Sky.

I don’t have journey, is it true that the symbol on every players scarf is different??

Each Journey symbol is composed of four 3x3 grids, which would give 2^(4x9) ≈≈ 70 billion combinations. However, Journey symbols used in most places in the game are symmetrical, or contain copies of one of the quarters, possibly flipped or rotated, which gives fewer possibilities, more like 10 million. The copied quarter is strangely effective at making the symbols look 'nice' in some way.

However, Journey scarves just repeat the same symbol again and again. And I compared a screenshot from my game (attached to this post) with a random one on YouTube and we have the same symbol. So no, the scarf symbols are all the same. Sorry. But symbols scattered throughout the game vary.

If you're doing cosplay and want to look accurate, pay a great deal of attention to the brown, yellow and white colours, and to making every square has a proper point at each corner. No rounded corners. Also do your best to use a fabric which 'flaps' a bit like the scarf. The actual symbols, nobody is going to notice.

the scarf texture has its own set of symbols, there's a different set of symbols for the tower, another set for the player, another for the gravestones, the symbols rotate symbols. also the video you got is a public beta playthrough of journey (that's one of the history lessons) not retail.

been a while since i played it, but the flower is in one of the deserts (the pink desert, iirc) and the flow reference is the tower

if you need help with where exactly they can be found, you might need to check a guide

For the Flower in the desert, watch out for a meteor early on in that map, follow it to where it lands, then follow the trail of pebbles.. For the Flow, wait until the room is full of water, then swim all the way back up and down the central column, looking at what is inside it at every level.

Krills are animals. Guardians are like tanks with a brain inside. You should be more scared of guardians. Except that they were made so long ago that now many of them are broken.

guardians in Journey just do their guard duty. iirc, after 3 times attack, their attack will stop. its the krill who will eat all them can eat.

The only times I've escaped from guardians were times when some part of the scenery got in the way of its dive, And they were fortunate accidents, not things I was planning.

honestly, if TGC made another game, I think they need to come up with something a bit more unique and new
Sky works, because it's selling point is basically "Journey, but now it's an MMO"
they might work with similar overall themes of Flower/Journey/Sky (the playful-to-disastrous-to-rebirth) because that works, but they would need to find some great gameplay and visuals to make the game stand out among many artistic indie games that have been inspired by Journey's success since, and their own games

Flow has far too many random movements to make it worth speedrunning. Too much luck or unluck involved.

Speedrunning Flower just feels wrong. It would be possible, but Flower is all about expansive gestures and wide curves. Someone playing Flower should not be in the mood to speedrun it.

that's what makes it interesting, you learn to optimize the movement and go straight to the goal of going a layer down, there's enough rng for it to be speedrunnable

you might need to change the screen resolution in options. make sure it's set to your desktop resolution if playing fullscreen

I was just playing with someone in journey that showed me everything but when we got to the last part to skip the cutscene i think, my game glitched? 😭 the screen at first was white but i just continued going forward then it turned black. i can hear myself but can’t see anything

Maybe slightly off-topic, but doesn’t that…run into legal issues? Name-dropping Journey in your trailer to imply it was made by your studio when it was actually made by a team at a studio you used to work at? Would not be thrilled if I were TGC 🤷‍♂️

idk what the issue is? The trailer says its made by the artist that directed the art for journey, which is a fact. Matt Nava left tgc after making journey look gorgeous-- and just because he has his own game studio now doesnt mean he shouldnt be able to take credit for his past work

That’s all fair! I think for me the thing was that the way it was introduced on this thread was as a new TGC game, and many of the comments on the version of the trailer I saw are similarly confused. I guess that felt a bit…deliberate? Nava also doesn’t have credit as director, producer, designer, or programmer of Journey, and is one of two artists given credit. To describe himself as “the visionary artist behind Journey”, and then to list the other two games that his studio DID produce just seemed a bit disingenuous when it’s two entirely different teams working on the games- these are, at the end of the day, separate studios. Just my two cents though!
