you too c:
If you want u can send me a friend request or something
I tend to try and keep my friends list clear; feel free to message me on here or just post really as I'm usually arround if you have any questions
Ok thx
So im trying to learn how to become a DM and I've been using roll 20 for map making currently and me and my friend have made our characters and im not 100% sure on where to continue next cause if seems so fun but just genuinely lost at the moment so any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated thank you š
Cause im obsessed with making stories for others to enjoy its just making it work in dnd is proving difficult
?dmtips
The most important part of being a good DM is facilitating the fun of everyone at the table. Keep these tips in mind to help things go smoothly:
D&D is about telling a story as a group, so let the players contribute to the outcome through the words and deeds of their characters. If some players are reluctant to speak up, ask them what their characters are doing.
The DM isnāt competing against the player characters. Your job is to referee the rules, run monsters, and keep the story moving.
Treat your players in a fair, impartial manner. The rules help you do this, but you can make your own rulings to ensure everyone is having fun.
Adventures have no prescribed outcome. You can alter any encounter to make it more interesting and fun for your players.
Dungeon Masters are fallible, just like everyone else, and even experienced DMs make mistakes. If you overlook, forget, or misrepresent something, correct yourself and move on. No one expects you to memorize every part of this adventure and all the rules in the Basic Rules. As long as your players are having fun, everything will be just fine.
Also check out #dm-discussion to talk shop with fellow DMs
Thank you š
Hello I want to be a dm and Iām relatively new to dnd only played one game before what book should I get?
free basic rules are sufficient
Read the information in 'Playing the Game', 'The Basics', and 'DM's Toolbox'
Feel free to ask any questions you still have in #dnd-newcomers, #dm-discussion, or check out the resources in #learn-to-play. Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game for instructions on how to post to #looking-for-players or browse #looking-for-dm to find a group looking for someone to DM for them.
I just rediscovered my D&D universe books and decided to try playing for a while to get the hang of the new D&D and then maybe break out the world and start DMing.
Yes the free rules are enough to play. But if you are ready to invest a little the top three books are the playerās handbook, the dungeon masterās guide and the monster manual. If you are planning on playing online then getting them digitally makes the most sense either from D&D Beyond or Roll20 (Beyond is the official place).
For people who play online TTRPG's and found a group online:
Does anyone know a way to find a TTRPG group that is text-based? I can't speak much because my parents are in the room above mine and have a very thin floor, so you can hear EVERYTHING between floors, making text my only option. Iām also a minor, which eliminates even more options. Or is it just better to hold off from TTRPGās entirely?
Iāve heard of solo TTRPGās, but admittedly, I donāt like the systems most of them use. I like DnD as a system the most. Iām also in a timezone where TTRPG players donāt really seem to exist...
search for play by post or PBP
or you could potentially look into a MUD, which isn't D&D but is multi-user-dungeons that are purely text based and run in a browser
try the PBP first.
I've looked into PBP before, but all of the ones I can find are paid/18+ Exclusive, or based in a timezone that I cannot accommodate for.
Or based on a forum
PBP are usually intended for forum based formats, to be honest. gone are the days of text based IRC chat rpgs. i remember playing in one and later running one across nearly 7 years.
Yeah, I figured. Forums are mostly a no-go due to difficult UI or unavailability due to recent laws in my country.
keep at it. its like a job search. it'll take a few weeks or months to find the right game for you.
I'll try, I'm at around year one now though, so I'm not the most hopeful.
been there. at that point years ago i just made a game and DM'd it. i'm not a fan of online after running that for a year and a half.
I've considered that, I'm a writer anyway, but most places don't allow posts from minors or beginners so I ruled that out.
any chance you could post notices at school?
Not an option to me for various reasons, and TTRPG's aren't really a thing in my country.
i feel for ya.
Best bet for text based DnD these days is mostly west march servers tbh
It tends to be pretty accommodating as a PbP format with different time zones
I tried joining a few of them but the age issue popped up often, and most of them had no activity for months at a time unfortunately.
What's the tab for actually getting into a game , im looking to create some art for a campaign but idk what to click , help a newbie ?
That's why I asked if I should just hold off to be honest, this isn't a situation I'm getting out of any time soon, and I don't really think there are many people in this situation.
careful, there's a lot of art scams going around.
Okay thanks , I'm love dnd and to do digital art , I just want to Play
Have you looked on just this server or elsewhere?
I've looked here briefly, but also on many of the forums not banned in my country, Reddit, Roll20, etc.
There's Role Gate (which isn't a forum exactly and has a Discord), Gamers Plane's Discord, Discord's public servers listing (https://discord.com/servers?query=play+by+post), Facebook groups (if available in your country), and Server Scout (https://pnpnews.de/). PBP is much rarer, and having local restrictions does complicate it some!
I've just checked some of these, nothing I can run with unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestions though, I think I'll just give up at this point.
i manage to convince my friends, group of 5, to do a one piece themed DND and i'll be the GM with little to no experience. What is the main thing I should prioritise? I've so far been too focused on making this perfect even though I know it won't be, so I want to prioritise enjoyment first.
Find out what your group finds fun and use that as a baseline to design the session/adventure.
Alright. I'll focus on grasping the rules at the moment and getting the world I want in mind set. Evidently, I know that the ones with the most control and freedom will be players and my role is to merely give them the canvas for them to paint
That's a good perspective!
What's a good website for making dnd character
D&D beyond.
Thank you ā¤ļø
Hi i'm from arg i used to play with friends every week but not anymore. I'm looking for a party that may include me, my english is good but not perfect. I wish to start with a character with mild communications skills. Striving to enter the society and Maybe only causing hell and havoc from little misunderstandings.
Usually i'm free to play in this range
20:00 hs (ART) in Argentina 23:00 UTC.
04:00 hs (ART) in Argentina 07:00 UTC.
Hello Nephew I am sorry I am late with welcoming youš!
I have a question regarding moral alignment
I once met a DnD player irl; he was talking at length about the game. For example he was saying that while DMing players often come with many unforeseen very bad ideas, and the DM then has to somehow solve them, often talking to the offending player in private and explaining to them why the idea is very bad.
Example of such a horrible idea: a player playing a neutral character, pursued by some NPCs, has the idea to burn a village to make the pursuers investigate the village while the player runs away. But that's the action of a decidedly evil character, never a neutral one!
I found this very counter-intuitive, so I started arguing... My understanding of alignments:
- Good: Never harms innocents; always takes broader context into account when deciding on their actions; strives for the good of all (according to their understanding of "good"), even if it requires self-sacrifice (so would never burn a village)
- Neutral: Never harms others wantonly or for pursuit of own power; Discards broader context when deciding on their actions (prioritizes their job over wellbeing of others - ethics vs morality); Never self-sacrifices; Harms others if necessary to save their own skin or do their job (so would burn a village if they judge this is the best way to survive, but not to gain loot or just for sadistic pleasure)
- Evil: Will harm others wantonly or for pursuit of power or riches. (Will burn a village to loot it).
I think I ruined my chances of joining the guy's game by arguing this...
I understand my intuition is wrong?
You have contradicted yourself, you said that a Neutral character would never burn down a village, but then have said that would burn down a village if it benefits their survival.
I don't think so? I mean wouldn't burn for pursuit of own power, for loot or something like that, but survival is something else. Where is there contradiction here?
Also, alignment is a generalisation of the character, it is possible for Good characters to commit acts of Evil in the same way the Evil characters can commit acts of Good
I find a lot of arguments about alignment to be a bit of a distraction from what I perceive to be the real problem: a misunderstanding inside of the group what content is valid for the type of game you're playing.
That's a neutral character potentially making the jump into evil.
But alignment aside, that is where expectations haven't been agreed. He's expecting some happy-go-lucky adventuring hero types, maybe they'd pick a pocket but they wouldn't murder for fun, and your guy is there with a problem they want to solve by Molotov.
Your example had a Neutral character setting fire to escape NPCs chasing them, and you followed it up by saying that's an evil action and never neutral, then you said that Neutral characters would set fire to a village for their own survival, that is a direct contradiction
I think alignment is much less the issue there. The issue was proposing to solve a problem in a way that was likely to massively disrupt the intended flow of the game.
Either we misunderstand each other completely or... Am I understanding correctly that you argue that alignment is decided by acitons alone, and not by motivation behind actions?
so the moral evaluation of an action (such as burning of a village) is the same regardless whether you do it to loot it or to escape your own death? For my intuition these are two very different categories, but - correct me if I'm wrong - they are the same instead?
"Well, you could have been caught, cuffed, fined, and let out to go on the adventure with a stern warning not to do it again, but now there's a county-wide manhunt on for you since the screams of burning men, women and children reached the Earl's ear, so I guess this prep is useless..."
Just have a solid session 0. If we're agreeing that we have a heroic campaign, burning villages down is off the table without needing to discuss about the famously murky topic of alignment, which isn't even really a thing in the rules anymore.
How am I saying that alignment is decided by actions alone? I quite literally said that alignment is a generalisation of the character with because Good characters can commit acts of Evil in the same way Evil characters can commit acts of Good
Yeah, what you do matters.
Then you judge whether your alignment has changed.
Counter-intuitive for me, but OK.
Makes sense.
Alignment doesn't tell you how to act. It reflects how the character is seen by those around them.
Depends! Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The difference is usually whether the DM is running their own setting (often called homebrew setting) or an established setting (either running a prewritten campaign or running their own campaign in an established setting).
So in practice, a DM will tell you what they use when you join their game

I mean, I don't really understand the basics.I just understand the general idea
You gotta make a character. You gotta find someone who like, I guess paints the world
You can find the rules explaining the mechanics of the game in the links above @blissful sierra
Okay, then the other links will help, such as the link to the basic rules
I clicked on one of those links. Wow, that's up all the stuff. Do people remember all this
Mostly no, but over time you remember where to look
, i'm gonna go make friends to play with after I figure out what to play with
How can I join a party ?
Btw thanks for this

Heyo im a new player ive watched a bunch of yt vids and thought it looked fun i wanna learn how to dm tho
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do someāemphasis someāreading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!
Don't feel like you have to memorize everything to get going. Jump in, make mistakes, learn from them, and seek feedback!
hello
Welcome!
I am new here I dont really have anyone to play dnd with and I am also unsure how to start

okay thanks
btw, fellow newcomers, i'm playing DnD by AI engine Clxxxx, and it is quite fun to play as player and also being dm sometimes. but it is hard to play long because AI makes flaws.
Still good to learn about your character, so just fyi
Especially you can set your party members with your custom flavor. that is really great point. Seems like Baldur gate is not offering customized appearance or race, professions of party members.
except that baldur's gate does let you customise your appearance and race, race is just limited to fit the setting
Okay, not a big Discord user, new (again) to D&D using D&DBeyond; want to get into a game but am not permitted to add messages to any of the 'looking for' threads. What do I need to do to become a real person?
If I remember correctly you have to wait 30 minutes or so
then a local wizard shows up and makes you a real boy
Follow the steps in #find-a-game
Hey bud
Is it possible someone can have bot accounts from this discord server try and contact me
Yeah there's a lot of scammers/spammers around
I think I messed up
Its always that same format of attractive woman pfp with some account description like "Here to make friends!" with an acc date in the last 4 months
If you've not interacted with them before in a shared space and feel you can trust them, do not accept friend requests from them
Please report them as scammers/spammers to Discord
?discord
If you have a problematic interaction with a user outside this server, the best course of action is to report that user to Discord Trust and Safety.
Particularly be wary of the "free campaign" that after joining they say "but you'll need to buy art from <artist>"
That's just bait and switch.
If it's a free campaign then it should be free - no payment required at all.
I got timed out lol woops
Yep
I messed up
Do I just block them
Report to Discord and block and be wary of unsolicited friend requests
I kinda just blocked them
That's fine
If you have their message, you can right-click/long press the message and report the message (e.g. ones that clearly show spamming/scamming attempt are good ones to report)
And for unsolicited friend requests there should be a way to mark the invite as spam
You can also manually report - see the "Submit a Request to Discord" link in the bot message here: #dnd-newcomers message
Don't worry about it - you've protected yourself and hopefully learned to be a bit more wary
š, thought I was maybe finding a group to play with, but when I saw that some of that looked like copy an paste I got a bit wary
Yeah - I'd double check to see if they have any messages on the server and specifically if they have an LFG post up before interacting with them. And even then I'd suggest trying to keep the initial communications on server (e.g. in your LFG thread) until you feel you can trust them.
Looking For Game
See #find-a-game for info and instructions on how to use our LFG channels.
Ok cool
Iām going to continue learning the rules first about a week an then do it but thx for your time an have a good day
Hey does anyone wanna game

Hey is anyone hosting a new campaign?
check out the #find-a-game channels, you specifically are probably wanting #looking-for-players
Wouldnāt it be looking for dm?
Looking for players is DMs hosting games
Ah so go to #find-a-game and the looking fot #find-a-dm?
No
You asked about people hosting new campaigns, the place to find people hosting campaigns is #looking-for-players , which is DMs looking for players, so players are the ones responding to those posts
It can take some time before you find something that fits your taste, took me months
Oofš
If a campaign isnāt explicitly advertised as newbie friendly itās always worth it to ask!
Yeah but it seems like I have to pay a fee just to join it seems
Iāve been looking online and most of it is either paying to play or to find a group whoās willing to play with a new player especially a newbie
If it's a paid game it need to be posted in #paid-looking-for-game not anywhere else. Please report mis-posted games by right clicking/long-pressing the game post, select Apps -> Alert Mods and we can handle it from there
Games posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community should not have any payments required.
For some reason, I'm not permitted to add messages to the looking for players thread
You need to use the bot commands to create a post in thos channels. The instructions for how to do that can be found in #find-a-game
But to help simplify things, start typing here in this channel /looking-for
okay. thanks UN. I'll give it a shot
Typing /looking-for triggers the bot, you pick one of the options (if you are a DM looking for players, pick the players option), and then the bot gives you a form to fill out.
Submit the form, bot creates post, then attaches a thread to it.
cool
Use the threads attached to a Looking For Game post to communicate interest/provide corrections/updates/etc.
/looking-for game
/looking-for then pick one of the options that should pop up
/ oh wow just typing that gives you all sorts of options
Yep!
sorry. totally new to discord
The slash is Discord's "run a bot command" command
haven't played D&D in 37 years
Welcome back!
tankies!
Started playing in '78. I killed Gary Gygax at the first Gen Con. He wasn't happy.
DM'd for about 2 decades. Have an entire planet on paper. Have to get aquainted with the online assets
i want to learn to play dnd but the rule books are always hard to read for me (TwT i also cant find chapter one) i i usaly understand better when ppl explain it to me i also dont know a youtuber to explain the rules so just showing me a youtube vid is a good way to
Chapter 1: Playing the Game: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game
Chapter 2: Creating a Character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character

The pinned message here in the channel also has links to useful resources including other D&D YouTube videos to help folks get started
ty
BTW is there a find game chat?
Yes - read #find-a-game carefully to learn how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group/game
yeah i dont see any vcs
We don't have any vocie chats here at all - we don't host games here
We just allow folks to advertise their games in the Looking For Game channels
oo ok ty i may need to annoy you to help me understand a rule or two lol
Well feel free to ask specific questions - folks here are generally pretty nice and willing to answer specific questions
so basicaly uh a abilty is a bards like inspartion/buffs
That is one of the bard's features, yes
To give bardic inspiration to other characters/creatures
You can read the specific feature here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level1BardicInspiration
k tysm man dnd is just a more fun looking video game
...hmmm many video games have been inspired by D&D (particularly any RPG-style video games) but D&D is more in that there's a strong collaborative storytelling element to it. The Dungeon Master presents the adventure (problems) that the adventuring party (player's characters) must face and overcome/escape and together the group explores a story together.
D&D beyond does not give me a lot of options and my current new campaign is all using paper sheets (Iāve never done one before). Iām wanting to see if thereās any free quick and ez character sheet creator or something so I can make my level 10 wizard and not worry about writing a novel on paper with my terrible handwriting
i play firemblem LOL its basicaly dnd just a pr picked story and single palyer
Unless you own the books on D&DBeyond or are in a D&DBeyond campaign with content sharing, you would be limited to the free options provided in the basic rules/SRD (this is true regardless of if you're using Roll20, Foundry, Fantasy Grounds, or other tools that have D&D character sheets as only the free stuff is available for free, other options require purchasing the books).
If you would prefer a fillable PDF character sheet, you can download one here: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/free-rules/ph/character-sheet.pdf
?books
There are four ways to access content on D&D Beyond that you may have in your physical books:
- Purchase the full digital book from the marketplace
- Purchase a digital/physical bundle from the marketplace
- Join a D&D Beyond campaign with someone who already owns the book where content sharing has been enabled
- Use the homebrew tools to copy the content from your physical book into D&D Beyond (Note: Do not publish any content copied in this way; it is for personal use only)
Hello, I am fairly new to dnd and am playing a druid, and ive tried to search online but get so many different answers. How does hp work? If I wildshape into something do I take the creatures stat block for hp, or my own? Then whenever I die in wildshape do I revert back to human then enter death saving throw, or do I revert back to human and the hp I was at prior to wildshape?
Which version of druid are you playing, 5e (2014) or 5.5e (2024)
5.5e im pretty sure. We are kinda relaxed on the specifics as this is the first campaign for alot of us, but we are unsure of how it worked so I figured I'd ask here.
Which subclass are you playing as?
Alright so for 2024 druid when you wildshape you retain your normal health pool. Normal druids gain druid level amount of THP, moon druids get 3x druid level thp starting at level 3. So for a level 3 moon druid you get 9 temporary health. Your armor class will be 13 + your wisdom modifier while wildshaped as a moon druid. When you become incapacitated (such as going unconscious and making death saves) you revert back to your base humanoid form. Since your wildshaped health pool is just your normal health, you will make death saves as usual.
The 2024 version of druid is in some ways more and less straightforward than 2014
So if my druid has 31hp and I wildshape onto a wolf I'll be a wolf with 31hp plus my thp? Then if I lose that thp plus the 31hp I have I enter death saving throw rather than reverting back to my 31 before I transformed?
If that question made sense, sorry if not.
Im mostly just confused on how droping to 0 hp works in wildshape. If I enter death saving throw or if I just go back to normal at my hp I was before I used wildshape?
in 2024, your health is just your health. You gain temporary hitpoints when you wildshape, but your base hitpoint pool does not change. Damage you take in wildshape is just damage, and if you're hurt when you wildshape you are still hurt.
2014/5e druid is the one where wildshape has a separate health pool
So if you have 31 hp, wildshape and get 9 thp, you will revert to humanoid form after taking 40dmg and make death saves
No worries its definitely confusing š
I definitely appreciate it haha. I love my druid so far but its definitely gotten confusing as we are all trying to learn it as we play
Yep. I actually just recently started playing my first 2024 druid after being brutally stubborn so I just had to figure this stuff out
Hello, I'm Keo and I'm very very new to being a player in DnD. I play an Aasimar rouge. I really need tips on how to be a better rouge? Or a better player in general. I'm new to what rouges can do and would appreciate any and all advice.
How do you currently play your rogue
Reading up how exactly sneak attack works will get you a long way with rogues š
-# first of all, spell it rogue. Automatically better/silly
second of all, generally try not to end your turn next to an enemy unless you got a good reason. And learn sneak attack, and donāt do anything too stupid and endanger your party.
ye like i did in my campaign when i was stuck missing all my attacks against a displacer beast š
so in combat, rogues are supposed to sneak attack almost every turn. look for opportunities to get it, work with your allies who are getting into melee. Otherwise, you are supposed to be slippery and hard to target by enemies, so positioning matters.
outside of combat, you are a skill monkey. succeeding at a number of skills better than everyone else in the party. make sure to give the other players also opportunities to shine with their skill proficiencies though.
depending on your skill selection, you can specialize into different roles, but generally, rogues are good at exploring, with their ability to sneak around and disable traps
Omg my mistake. Thank you for your advice!
Thank youu I'll keep that in mind
Very nervously-
I try to be the person in the party who analyses the situation and then make moves- like sneak attacking the enemy or exploring the place and looking for valuables and blind spots for me to hide in. However, since I'm playing with new players as well, they kind of lean on me and I end up in the direct line of fire most of the time. ( Also Idk how to answer this question, I'm sorry if its not very detailed-)
Will do boss!
rogues certainly shouldnt frontline (outside of very specific multiclass builds who can sort of do it)
who else is in the party?
You should not be in the direct line of fire, that's more fighter/barbarian/paladin
being the scout and sneak attacking enemies is what a rogue should be doing though
We have a gnome-cleric, a Dragonborn fighter and a tiefling bard
Depending on the cleric, they can frontline alongside the fighter
is the fighter melee or ranged?
Yes, I'll try to pivot away from those positions in the next sess
Melee
Fighter is your frontline fighter, cleric is a mix of frontline and support, bard is support
hmm then they should be in the line of fire so to speak, with the cleric close by
Ooo I see. Alright.
We're in a campaign where we're literally playing mind games with either a God/dream creator in a town filled with shadow creatures and doppelgangers. I feel like I'm lacking when it comes to exploring/investigating. Any tips on how to better do that?
( also again I am very sorry if these questions come off as very stupid or silly-)
your questions are fine, it's what we're here for
Sobs*
No such thing as a stupid question
As for exploring/investigating, that's a case of asking your DM if you can when you feel the need to.
Alright, thank you for all your help guys!
np
in DND beyond, it says Tabaxi have 30 move speed, and "you have climbing speed equal to your walking speed"... but then later it says "because of your cats claws, you have a climbing speed of 20feet"
searching elsewhere seems to say it's 20... so is it just an error on beyond?
It doesn't
From 2 different sources
It is the difference between the 2 published Tabaxi's
what you are reading are two different version from the same race
In Mordenkainen's book, the tabaxi climbing speed is part of their speed
In Volo's, the climbing speed is included in their claws feature, so whatever youre looking at is combining the two sources
Sooo, I'm new to this stuff DnD and...
Can anyone dm me and help me to understand how does this game work?

read thru the basics in the bot, if you have specific questions afterwards, come one back and ask away
So I read that an Aasimar doesn't necessarily have to be half human, they can be half any mortal race? From like, a DMs point of view, would a player playing an aasimar like that be bothersome/too difficult? I've seen that sometimes DMs don't accept like too complicated races and stuff, so I wouldn't wanna make a character which would make DMs hate me
Flavor is free - with DM allowance you can describe your character as whatever as long as the game mechanics donāt change and it isnāt disruptive to their game.
How do I make an online character sheet
If you joined a server that play example every sunday or saturday then what will happen if you misses one of it
It would depend on the server
If every game is a one-shot, then not playing every time shouldn't be a big deal
If you're playing an ongoing story, then the group might want you to be there every time or reschedule if enough people aren't available
I see
Best to ask wherever you're playing, tbh
My work time keep switching every week
Then I'd probably recommend looking for a one-shot game rather than something that requires a set commitment
What is the different about one-shot game ?
You play that game with no assumption of coming back for another session at the same time
That sound kinda too fast to even enjoy the game
Have you ever tried it before ?
I used to run west march servers, basically every game was self contained
How was it ?
Itās a good time! DnD is DnD, and one shots have the ability to have a tight self-contained narrative which can be great
A session is still usually 2-4 hours in my experience, so plenty of time for a game imo
That's still the main way I play
I see
So, as a new player, I kinda got the main idea. But how can I firm my knowledge and stuff?
usually by playing
How much knowledge should I have in order to join a game?
It's good to have an idea of what your character can do, plus the basic rules for combat/checks/etc
Basic knowledge of your character's abilities and how combat/checks work and you should be fine
How can I come up with a proper character sheet?
There's DnDbeyond, Roll20 and pdfs, if you're gonna be online, I'd recommend ddb as it'll take you through step by step as you fill it
I could use a mate to help me out
There's a guide in the free rules, and the DnDbeyond character creator also takes you through the process step by step
Yea, you can post a link here or in #character-discussion , althought you'll probably get more feedback from character discussion
Can't I just send a pic of my sheet in the character-discussion part? Do I have to text all of my stats?
you could just set your character sheet to public & send the link there
no need to type everything out
On D&DBeyond on your character sheet there will be a share button at the top right next to the long / short rest button
If you made it via some other method you can upload the sheet to a trusted file sharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that
- from your dndbeyond character sheet, beside your character's name at the very top, click the manage button.
- there should be a side panel that opens. scroll down & click 'character settings'.
- scroll to the very bottom until you see 'character privacy', then click public. then click anywhere else to close that tab.
- copy the link of that page & send it to #character-discussion
OMFG THANK YOUš
no prob! remember to say hi in the channel & say exactly what you'd like ppl to do with your sheet so ppl aren't confused! :3
Hi!
I'm new to D&D and I'm really eager to play.
I've been looking in the looking-for-players channel, and I've noticed that pretty much every game is organized in an American timezone.
I'm wondering if there are also people from Europe who are organizing / still looking for someone?
It's quite difficult to find a group in my area lol, hence the question
There are about 20-30% that are european. Also suggest you post your own looking for so DMs can see what yer lookin for
I'd also recommend looking at times as well as time zones
And finally expand your search. This server isn't the only place to look for games!
Just because a game is in an American time zone, doesn't mean it won't work for you. I used to run games at 10 AM in my time zone, so I'd get a bunch of European players
Because that was early evening for them
fair points tbh
And some peoples posts will be set up to show times in your local time
Like C.A.I.N.E.'s post from about half an hour ago,
I mean, true that haha
but it's still quite difficult to look for a group. Been looking pretty much everywhere
Where specifically?
Communities nearby and some discord servers
It can be difficult, but you'll be able to find something, it just takes some time
And the only available groups were looking for a DM
And since I'm just starting out, I'd rather start as a player instead of a DM haha
Heyy, I'm also new!
did you make your own looking for as a player post?
you can list what yer looking for and then if a DM fits your needs they will reach out to
I've looked at much, but I thought this channel might be a good place to start looking haha
It's actually against the rules to set up games outside of the looking channels. So while we can advise on how to find games, you'll want to check the looking stuff as well
aaahhh okay! Thanks for the tip haha
Also, it wasn't necessarily a request to look for a game, more a question if there were people from European timezones haha
Hello, me and my friends wanted to get into D&D but we never had experience with the game. I am the DM (by choice) and I am looking for some tips and guidance from more experienced players. Are there any free campaigns we could start with or must I purchase one of the published ones (they're expensive for me and one of the players is in a different country so we cant meet together).
I believe there's a couple free modules on dndbeyond
Also don't be afraid to make mistakes
I see, I will look at these campaigns. Thank you.
np
I heard a friend of mine talking about something called the "Rule of cool" or something like that?
idk if it's a common thing
Is this good for new complete players? I'm into learning DnD for complete scratch
It's basically when a DM allows a player to break/bend the rules of how something works because the way they describe it is cooler than letting it play out normally.
It's is not something you need to do if you don't want to
I'd say it is as it basically provides a main plot to follow, which requires less work overall for the DM to do, and gives you an idea on what you wanna do/where you wanna go
Went to a new gaming store. Bought four sets of dice and a purple dice tray.
I didn't even know it existed until I saw a post on FB. It is an awesome store. It has everything. My next purchase is going to be some D&D books. Damn are they expensive.
Yo Yo
hell yeah!! new dice!!
Extremely new to D&D, but I do enjoy coming up with characters
then you'll probably like it, cos coming up with characters is a huge part of the game
I wanna make an Orc Cannibal Chef that wants to serve a god on a silver platter
I think I have enough sets of dice now. I think I have 8 sets. But I want more! hehe
You never have enough dice
Dice are cool
I got 2 purple sets, a grey speckled set with red numbers, and a black light set.
I have a resin set that has the one ring in each die
That's cool. I've seen some sets online I want to order that are like that.
If you're UK based, I'd recommend taking a look at diceroll.uk, they're reliable and have high quality dice.
I'm USA. But thanks. There are some nice companies online here.
Hi guys
Hi, if you have any questions feel free to ask
Ok. Im new to DnD and would love to play. Just went to DnD Beyond and made a character. Is there anyone that would wanna play a game sometime?
look at the #find-a-game channels as that's where all game solicitation is meant to take place, you specifically are want #looking-for-players
Oh. Thank you.

Im new to the game and want to play with people
Precciate' it kind stranger šŖ
First check out some of the links that bot just dropped.
There's a lot to the game and it can be intimidating at first. If you come across specific questions, feel free to ask!
I dont know where to play as i dont have friends who want to play
we have the #find-a-game channels
Lots of people play online :)
where is the best place online i can start playing as a first time player?
have you read any of the basic rules by chance?
from dnd beyond yea
So next step is to find a group to play with - and that will usually determine where you'll play D&D (e.g. what online tools will be used, etc.)
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
okay well where do i look for a beginner friendly group?
Most groups are fine with new-to-D&D folks as long as they've put some effort into learning on their own
So I just posted that bot message above and it links to the #find-a-game where you can find information on how to find a game and important instructions on how to use our Looking For Game channels to find a group
okay thank you
Also be patient and spread your search wide - also check out Roll20, Demiplane, and other TTRPG game forums/sites as many have Looking For Game (LFG) channels/services.
alrightt
2014 monk, stunning strike: is the con save vs my ki dc
Yes - refer to the section where it explains Ki it notes this:
Ki save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
Bet just wanted to double check thanks!
Oh one last thing - be wary of unsolicited friend requests/direct messages. There are a lot of scammers out there and will often try and offer a "free campaign" but once hooked will try and pressure you to pay an artist for character art. This is a typical bait and switch scam. Report them to Discord or whatever platform you're on where that happens. It's not free if they require you to pay for art (often said art is stolen or AI-generated).
^ that's happened to me 3 times before š
I sure feels like AI generated "art" makes the scammers think everyday is payday or something... I never trust a random friend request or a message from someone I've never interacted with on a server I'm never active on, especially if they are either trying to inquire about art commissions or don't really seem to have a point to their messages from the get-go. I can't tell you how many I get that are just doing a wave gif or something and it's always awkward as heck.
Kind of a dumb question but is it possible to just not take a starter class weapon?
Iām a fighter and I really donāt want to take the longbow because it sounds too complicated to write down ā ļø
It depends on what the DM allows. I think technically, you either start with starting gear or a set amount of gold to spend as you see fit, as long as the DM is okay with it. I don't really follow how a longbow is too complicated though..?
^thatās correct, plus a DM may allow you to swap something out if you ask, but I also fail to see how longbows are too complicated
1d8 range:150/600ft
Ah okay thank you
If you wanna add properties, Heavy and Two handed, plus the slow mastery in 2024
Iāve only got so much room on my paper to write everything XD
You can abbreviate a good bit of it, as long as you know what they mean.
For example -
D - 1d8 P, R - 150/600, H, 2hd, Slow
Oh I forgot Ammuniton too, but that one is obvious enough
Itās relatively easy to remember a bow needs ammo
Hah i almost forgot the 20 arrows
Gotta include the piercing damage
Ah, true.
But thats easy just 1d8p
Hi how are we today
Howdy. Let us know if you have any questions
Hello chat, can someone explain what does +1/+2 . . . mean usually? What is the difference between a regular bow and a +1 then a +2 bow?
+1 or +2 weapons are magicically enhanced versions of the base. the +1 or +2 is what you add in addition to all of the normal things you would add to both you attack and damage,
Example: your regular long sword - Roll 1d20 + Strength Modifier + Proficiency Bonus (if you are proficient). if that hits, roll 1d8 + Strength Modifier for damage... your +2 long sword - Roll 1d20 + 2 + Strength Modifier + Proficiency Bonus (if you are proficient). if that hits, roll 1d8 + Strength Modifier for damage. if that hits, roll 1d8 + + 2 + Strength Modifier for damage

Learn the game rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), at least broadly.
-
Grab a pre-written adventure (plenty are on DMsGuild), do someāemphasis someāreading/watching (I'd recommend the Quickstart Guide, the DM section of the Basic Rules starting here, and this Ginny Di video), and dive in! If you want additional homework, I'd recommend plucking whatever seems useful from Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. At least watch the first handful of his videos!
-
Don't feel like you have to memorize everything to get going. Jump in, make mistakes, learn from them, and seek feedback!
Currently at a point where I feel like I'm too old to play the game but also don't know enough about it to understand how to play it properly without pissing people off. But I want to learn enough that I can make it past session zero at least.
You're never too much of an unc to learn how to do a bad scottish accent
Your only too old of yer not alive.
can someone help me learn how to play
Check out #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Then feel free to ask specific questions as you run into them
We can't really teach people D&D one on one in a server this size
There's also some useful resources linked in the pinned messages here in the channel.
I'm just learning myself. Found a local group. Joining their game on the 23rd. Not sure what to expect. Just going in ready to learn from the DM and the other players.
this might seem counterintuitive, since balanced dice are random, but if a die seems to be rolling low its okay to verbally shame that die and switch to another for a few rolls.
That's dice logic right there. š
some people have a dice jail
Nonsense. Players in my group are old enough that they have played the original dnd back in the 70's
sometimes age gap can be weird at the table. like if its a group of random people sitting down and they're all gen alpha and there's one player who's gen X.
it happens though. i mean, we live in an age where there's people in their 60s re-training careers and entering college as freshmen. so age gap is much less weird than it used to be
At first it can be a little weird, but you kinda get comfortable with them and it doesn't bother you yk? Most of the people at our game store are early 20's, some 30's, but we have guys who are probably 50? 60? And we all fit in right with eachother
I just finished my masters with a 67 year old and a 72 year old in my cohort not too long ago. Never too late to learn something new
nope. you just need loads of money and time for retraining.
but back to the table. age gap is less initially jarring when there's varying generations instead of like a huge polarity in one single table member. and its more likely that there will be multiple generations at the same physical table.
does anyone know if the ravenloft preorder bonus encounter stuff will be eventually available in physical form for people who buy the books?
I just found out the group I am joining ranges from mid 20's to 50's. Makes me feel better knowing I won't be the only old guy.
So other than the player's manual are there other books I should have? Most of them seem to me to be geared more towards the DM. I'm playing a Drow Warlock. So are there any books I should have to play that class?
I think the PHB should be enough for now!
if you aren't used to actually playing in session, reading through Peril in Pinebrook by Young Minds Inspired in its entirety might help give a heads up about how the game flows. the pdf is free.
Hi!! How do you guys āget in your characters headā to roleplay them?? I have their backstory but I still struggle to think of how they would react to different situations
So at what point does the DMās ādiscretionā become a problem? Iām in a session right now and weāre in combat. First round. So far weāve had:
- enemy cast Otilukeās Resilient Sphere on our Cleric but a 28 didnāt save because he āupcastā it. When I asked how upcasting changes a save DC, the DM said he automatically casts all spells at max level and it increases the DC
- enemy used Teleport to move him and the en-Sphered Cleric away. When I point out that the Cleric is not a willing creature, the DM says that the sphere counts as willing for the purpose of the spell
That's a hard one. Newer DMs will sometimes really bend the rules of the game to fit the narrative idea they had in mind so that things "go according to plan," sounds like you got cutscene'd here
Yeah this is definitely some not so fun choises made by the DM. Yeah, sometimes as a DM you want things to happen a certain way when you have something specific in mind, but at that point there's also just no point in making people do saves, or use spells with pre-existing rules that have a chance to not work, if you need them to work
As for an answer to the question, it becomes a problem when it's not fun, or feels overly frustrating to you as a player
If you know your character's personality and ideals or the thing they want most, that can help. For instance, I have a druid who in their previous life was a sort of special ops agent. Something the character wants is to put that old life behind them, so they work very hard to help others to the best of their ability. Of course, that past also informs their character; sometimes they get pushed to the brink and they react with extreme violence, despite wanting to keep that impulse in check.
Point being, knowing the backstory is useful, but how does that backstory inform the character's perspective on the world? What experiences have they had that, to some extent, guide their decision-making?
That's one way to think about it, anyway. Hopefully that helps some!
Im completely new to dnd, and i have chosen dragonborn as my race. Which is the best version of dragonborn?
Hi, i might have a chance to experience a session this upcoming wednesday. is there any preparation like dice or paper written character status? i wonder the place that i can get those infos.
Best is somewhat subjective, but if it helps any, lots of undead are immune to poison and plenty of things like demons and devils are immune to fire.

Thank you for your effort to care the newbie like me! I need to make my character, so i made my own character filling all emptied slots in character sheet. Because it is first time to play D&D to me, i was very nervous. I didn't know how to play in online. But thanks to you, now I can learn how to play.
No problem. If you'd like a review of what you've made, head to #character-discussion.
that is perfectly suit option to me. i'll bring it right now, Thank you!
Hey everyone. Im new to the d&d world but I've kept an eye or should I say "interest" in it since I was a kid. My friends groups growing up were never into the fantasy world l8ke I was.

Start off with a look at the basic rules linked above, and when you think you've got an idea of the terms used try putting a character together.
The first steps there are picking a class, background and species. Let us know if you have any questions.
when you pop your first character together, don't worry about making mistakes. don't intend this character to be played, intend this character to mess around with options and numbers and whatever. get a feel for where things are on the sheet and where things are in the book, and what numbers mean.
then rebuild the stuff you liked and want to play onto a new character sheet.
Hey guys, anything new?
i'll be running Well of Shadows on the 13th of June.
haven't run that before, but i got time to get maps printed out and all that
i should check if i have to reprint any of the pre-gens
Please don't solicit games in this channel, is what the #find-a-game channels are for
i meant in physical meat space. i was responding to Sirius. but yeah, i can completely see how that looked. i should have specified a bit more
ok
guys a bit of an dumb qoustion i am pretty new to dnd why do some people demand money for sessions like dont you do it for fun
not money
people shouldn't be demanding money from you to play
DMs sometimes require money for their games because playing DnD is a fun hobby, but setting up DnD actually requires work.
It's kind of like someone setting up a surprise party for you. The party is a lot of fun, but the preparation takes time and sometimes even takes money.
Love DnD but I wouldn't never pay money for it, I am there to play the game and make friends so paying money for would make me feel disingenuous or something
When you saying demanding money, are you talking about paid games, or the DM just turning round and demanding money off you?
It depends...
Are you talking in store where a store charges for players to join a table and then the DM gets something from that?
Is this at a store where the DM pays a table fee and then sets up with a bunch of gear and stuff and you pay the table fee (for each person) and a little extra for the DM
Or
It is in a public place where the table and location are free and you're just paying for the DM's time and use of his equipment?
If there is no DM equipment involved (that the players make use of) and no table fee , there shouldn't be a fee.
Is it a VTT event and everything is done online and players stream everything?
Why pay for that when there are free games that do the same...
I mean, no shade whatsoever to DMs who charge. Being the DM is hard work, and takes time and effort, even when you're not using paid equipment.
If a DM wants to charge, then more power to them.
That's not the issue at hand here, it's trying to figure out it they're talking about paid games
There's definitely no shortage of scammers to watch out for, yeah.
I guess the store where we play charges $20 for the table space and the players all pitch in to pay for it. We play monthly so it's not a big deal. Worth it to have a place to play.
Hi
is there a way to get dnd beyond to show draconic ancestry on character sheet? it only shows my dragonborn breath and resistance, not ancestry
Probably
What do you mean? its in the species trait section under features and traits already
right under speed
oh. thought it would be like bg3 and give me a 2nd breath
BG3 did a bunch of changes to how 5e usually works, it's usually best to double check
ye; you can't easily fit a lot of the more utility and narritive sort of features in the format of a CRPG so they had to rework several things with replacements that fit thematically and that could be represented
paid games
All of the above, from the couple of places you've asked and been answered.
Free games will always be popular! Paid games are an option. Whether they're an option for you is a question only you can answer.
I just bought the players hand book and dice. Is there anything else I would need before looking for a game š
Knowledge of the rules, a collaborative attitude, and you should be good to go!
Damn how much did the players cost (Aw the missing word got added)
Sorry bro š¤”
Sounds good, thanks š
Checking out some DnD youtubers with new player videos can be a nice spot too with some generalized advice. I think the most helpful thing for starting to play is really trying to avoid putting pressure on yourself to play "correctly." Easier said than done, but trying to just relax and be present is the best thing to do as you familiarize yourself. Make mechanical mistakes, be uncomfortable roleplaying. Growth and learning is an inherently uncomfortable process as you venture into parts unknown ong frfr

is beyond going to add beast tamer anytime soon?
Not sure what that is. Do you mean Beast Master, the subclass for Ranger? Or some homebrew content?
Sincere question: Why would that be cause for concern?
My long term group ranges from mid 20s to 60 something, so seems fine to me
Just wondering if I will be able to relate to them. Especially the 20 somethings.
Well hey, here's one topic you're sure to share: DnD.
I don't know if relating is necessary to play the game, so long as everyone is collaborative, communicative, and respectful.
Im completely new to D&D, what advice do you guys have before I even look for a campaign to join?
Read the first two sections of the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), practice creating a character, give a think to what kind of game/group you want to be part of. That might be enough for a start!
How many practice character builds do you recommend for a brand new person?
Try a couple, but don't fret. Getting the process down is the key.
Maybe abouttt... 2 or 3? I think that's enough to get a taste of other classes and playstyles to see what you like the best
so rn im making a character thorugh DnD beyond how important is it to add things like traits and backstories?
Not necessary. Making sure you understand the mechanics and choices you have available is a higher priority in my eyes.
As a note: the character you're making is for practice to learn the process of making a character, so don't expect to use them as is. Generally, it's a good idea to make a character that fits the table and game you're part of, not ahead of time!
Better to save that kind of thing for when you get an actual game. Of course, there's nothing wrong with flexing your creative muscles, and #character-discussion is always open...
Plenty of players can rp and really immerse themselves in their character: John Adventurer, Champion Fighter. Especially when said character goes through awesome adventures at the table and bonds well with other characters.
so when building a character, what is important?
making a character that is willing to cooperate with others and go out on some kind of adventure.
And at least +2 bonus in your most important pair of ability scores, and a minimum of 10 in Constitution.
and making a character that fits into the world that the adventure takes place in.
(I figure, if your starting proficiency bonus is +2 you should at least aim to match that with your abilities)
i just used the quickbuilder on dnd beyond
I can put it in character discussion or here for some advice?
#character-discussion might be best
Impossible to say exactly, but 5e/2014 and 5.5e/2024 are the most recent and enjoyed the surges in popularity thanks to various pop culture trends.
It's impossible to really gauge any percentages, but certainly 5th edition is the most popular. It's split into two versions (the outdated 2014 rules and the current 2024 rules).
This server is for 5th edition DnD as well, so you're almost exclusively going to find 5e conversations here
You can play solo adventures without a DM?
You can,yes
Not really
you just either need a special toolset to adapt an adventure (with varying levels of suck or success), or a specific adventured designed for solo play without a DM
The game's not designed for it, but folks have made workarounds.
I was typing what razor put
AI is a poor DM (besides being bad at a bunch of other things).
Not exactly. DnD is built for a table of 1 DM and 3-5 players.
There are a few janky, homebrew ways to simulate some things that are similar to DnD, but it's definitely nowhere near the same experience. I wouldn't recommend solo play to a new player at all.
If I had a nickel for every time you beat me to the punch!
I usually say something then Dosh and Razor say it better
I think you're doing great here, sincerely!
Thank you! I am indeed trying!
generally the AI dungeon masters are not very good. a programmed script system does procedural combat way better than LLM. and generally any LLM will just make stuff up that sounds plausible, but doesn't actually stick to any lore or game system, or anything. such is the nature of LLMs, they build predictive text based on what came before, and at that they're aiming for something plausible rather than "correct".
Is there a place on this server to share D&D related personal projects like websites or art?
I have intro to stormwreck, can I use that as a solo journey or prequel to my character to familiarize myself with the game? Im completely new to this world of magic and fantasy.
#dnd-arts-and-crafts I believe.
Check id:browse but we do have #dnd-arts-and-crafts for any D&D arts and crafts you'd like to share.
Make sure it's not AI-generated and if the work is not your own, cite the artists and link back to them.
Also keep things appropriate following server rules.
@timid locust what about websites. For example I made a D&D personality test I'd like to share.
the point and click text based adventure thing? you certainly can use that as a springboard for your character.
If you have questions about server rules, go to #moderator-support and ask for a private thread to get clarification
you can also read through Peril in Pinebrook by Young Minds Inspired (or play your character through it if you'd like) to familiarize yourself with the flow. i found that adventure works well reading all the way through, and you can potentially DM yourself and play your character through without breaking too much because it guides you through stuff.
So it's like you pick the options throughout this particular story?
Games are not played on this server. It's purely a discussion discord. #find-a-game let's you look for players also wanting to game but those are taken off server and done in private or community discord servers.
the point and click Before the Storm thing doesn't exactly build your character, but it explains what a cleric is, or a fighter, and has dialog options. its a choose your own adventure book but animated and with dice rolls.
Huge PSA. There is an option that says #paid-looking-for-game if you don't select that but people try to charge you anyway. Block them. It will be likely a scam. Especially if it's art related.
Ahh ok. Thank you I might try that out tonight.
you can go through the Before the Storm choose your own adventure multiple times too, picking different options or choices. sometimes you get different results because of dice rolls too
This is becoming a forked road of many paths. It confuses me but excites me all in the same
For reference, this is the interactive demo Spiffy's referring to: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
yup. thats the one. i think i'll play it again right now.
at one point i was trying to transcribe everything from every option.
Man I wish I could start it now but I have to run an errand soon so it'll have to wait till later š©
would an aarakocra warlock need to bother adding points to str?
Depends if you expect your DM to use Earthbind against you!
I do kind of like the idea of using a diving dash and my claws later on
Don't post your age. Delete that before the mods bonk it lol but try #find-a-game

The more you learn beforehand, the easier it is to get into a group. Of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have along the way.
Once you feel ready, the next step is finding a group to play with. To use this server to find one, the instructions are in #find-a-game
thank you
Hey is there anybody I can play with I need a dm and some players
If you'd like to use this server to find a group to play with the instructions to do so are in #find-a-game
Iām watching the heroes of the borderlands video. I wanted something that gave a better rails on what would happen in an adventure but my daughters were turned on by the idea of the make believe of dnd.
How much āimaginationā is involved if I follow the guides in heroes of the borderlands? Think Iāll lose them by having too many rules or limits to imagination?
Think theyāll like the campaign enough theyāll want to keep playing dnd? How do we move on to another campaign when itās over? How to we branch into maybe a little more freedom game.
Use the adventure as a scaffold but feel free to tweak and adjust as needed and desired - the best D&D is the one that works best for you and your players.
I've run simple quest one-shots for my kids - go get the magical ingredients for the wizard type things
What matters is having fun together š
heh... I was doing anagrams for argentavis to think of an aarakocra name. it came up with something very childish
Hello I'm very new to dungeons and dragons I wanted to learn more in detail if anyone is willing to tell me or let me know how do I find out

Start off with a look at the basic rules linked above, and when you think you've got an idea of the terms used try putting a character together.
The first steps there are picking a class, background and species. Let us know if you have any questions.
Mee too
I also need to learn
Maybe we can learn together šø
Okiee thank you!!!
Ofcourse sure!
Should we make a character together
Ooo that'd be great when are you free? Can I send a friend request?
Hi, im new to dnd and tried to do it before a few months ago with a whiteboard on canva but tbh it went horribly, none of my friends or I know how to play dnd but we all want to, is it worth trying to make a custom game or just sticking to a premade one. (I want to be a dm btw) and if we do do a premade one is there any spy type ones as i think i have 2 players who want to be rogues
If you're new to roleplaying games beginning with a prewritten adventure can be an easier start.

For a real new starter experience, you could try Peril in Pinebrook: https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1625-peril-in-pinebrook-a-free-introductory-adventure
However, if you want some help building your own adventures head over to #dm-discussion.
ok thanks!
doing it on a whiteboard sounds kinda fun i should try that
it was, if i knew what i was doing itd be moreso lol
Is Hold Back the Dead still a free thing? What about the recent TED characters? Was that a limited time thing?
Sooo, I'm new to DnD
DnD taught me races matter and some races are better at some cases...
You might be surprised. Species is mostly for utility, and rarely affects your class gameplay. Pick whatever species you think is most fun.
More so in older editions where race gave you fixed ability score bonuses. That's changed in recent years.
That's if ur dm is good...
The sheer amount of tiefling racism is insane at some tables
That's a matter of agreed expectations at individual tables.
Indeed true yet I have had dms who lied
or an overhead projector. have things drawn on those plastic sheets, and it's projected on the wall
Btw
Can someone create a char sheet for me? I don't really have the time to do itš
Dm for the information, and thx beforehand
My friend, if you don't have time to make a character sheet, then actually playing a game of DnD is unlikely.
The usual session of DnD lasts 2-4 hours.
Ah yes,heaven
For us it lasts around 45 minutes
So I purchased the digital player's handbook (2014) but can't find it anywhere?
Wow. Things have changed. A session of D&D for me and my players would last... oh, the weekend?
YALL ARE LUCKY OR JOBLESS...Oh it's the norm.
Here i thought sessions last 45 minutes
Hilarious. My players and I would disappear into my basement on Friday night, get pizzas delivered through the basement window, and sometimes wake up Monday late for work.
I'm amazed, after a 37 year haitus from the game, how it's changed.
Damn
I'm honestly just a newcomer to dnd w super short sessions
Weekend dnd sounds awesome
on beyond? just click on it. some of them you have to download if it's the app
Hi. Thanks for the reply. Can't find anything to click on. š
Some things have changed, some have not, some for the better, some for the worse
Are you using D&D Beyond or another platform? We have #ddb-support to assist with DDB technical issues!
Thanks! I may have to go there and, yes, it's DDB
I see a lot has changed. Races I'd never allow, for one.
go to the library section, and select "owned" to filter
Well as you no doubt know, you (as a DM) don't have to accept anything you don't want
ABsolutely. My entire solar system was homebrew. Armor rules, spell-casting, combat... didn't use any of the D&D rules.
Was that even dnd...
sounds like kotor
Sure. We used everything else: monsters, deities, the spells and equipment. But as an actual medieval combatant, my combat was much nastier and my armor rules extremely realistic. Also, everyone got a detailed background they had to submit and then I had charts for schooling; martial or magical, that determined what spells they started the game with. It was totally possible for a 1st level character to have "Wish," in their spellbook.
Casting it, however, well...
@blazing totem group formation and solicitation can only occur in our looking-for channels. Any posts made elsewhere will be removed for being off topic.
Also please do not disclose your exact age. Its against server rules to ask for or disclose information like that.
I can say I'm so old it was my idea to make dirt washable.
The biggest change since 1989 was probably the move to the d20 system
im confused, "do not disclose your exact age" wdym by that
As in, don't say how old you are.
?? We were rolling d20s in '78
I'm so old I have velociraptor scars
Sure, but more was put on the d20, more rolls consolidated to it
Ah, okay. Got it. I was probably already doing that as part of my ruleset
I feel like we're veering away from the topic of this channel, which is to help new players with DnD.
Still trying to find my Player's Handbook. Off to that other channel. See ya later! Glad to be back!
Sometimes it doesn't pay to have a logical brain.
Kept going to 'Library' and looking for the links people told me would be there.
All I got was "You have not chosen any favorites." Nothing else.
So why would I click the link to "View all?"
I forced myself to make the illogical move. And, there it was.
Hello. I'm new and learning how things work here. Looking to join a game. I have a few character sheets ready to go.
the #find-a-game channels are what you're looking for
^^^
wow.... I used a name generator for a goblin warlock, and one of the names was "Goblin Warlock"
Obviously his name is Goblock Warlin
I can do a terrible Scottish accent but only if I am... For lack of better phrasing "Herbally Elevated"
I guess my struggle is trying to keep up with the amount of information. And barely knowing the bare minimum. Only knowing the lore but not really the numbers game or the luck system.
The lore is VERY deep and in most cases, not important to know. Just focus on the game and you'll naturally learn the lore, bit by bit š¤
I appreciate that. From what I've learned in recent years, I can build a world. And everything that functions inside world but struggle to put together a story or quest purpose within the world
If you have ever watched Cabin in the Woods, a lot of times that is how I form the narrative. I lay out the groundwork for just a few teaser quests and whichever the party seems to bite onto the hardest becomes the narrative focus. Its collaborative storytelling at the end of the day, player choices can do some of the heavy lifting for you in regard to crafting the story and purpose
For the first time I feel like I'm asking the right questions.
Granted most of my time spent in this server I barely asked a thing out of the concern or fear of being criticized for the lack of knowledge.
Even though I haven't seen any evidence of that possibility the entire time I've been In this server
This server is very beginner friendly! Especially in this specific channel since it's meant for players who are less familiar
Even if it's a silly question like "what can I do with rope?"
The malefic visions that we produce of the future will always greatly exceed the actual suffering of life
The closest thing to familiarity I am with D&D is
Folklore and mythology. Mixed with Vikingr and medieval renaissance, but can also include steam and cyberpunks
Making it 1 Game to rule them all
It's kinda all inclusive because there's also space stuff too, with the astral plane
Quick question, My party and I have been having weekly sessions on call for the great majority of our campagin, but me and all of my players agree that meeting up would be better, and I feel that as a DM I can contribute much more with the resources I have in an irl session, but one of my players doesn't really seem to want to, and I of course respect that. he won't necassarily tell me why, but I havent taken it upon myself to ask as I dont want to be nosy. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for a compromise or a substitute I can work on so everyone can be happy? It's obvious not everyone is comfortable with the same things but I still want it to be fun ! any advice would be appreciated, thank you! (ignore the typos lol)
But primarily, it is what you described it as
Happy to hear
This probably wouldn't fit in the game. But I built a character and an entire world around him... But in order to fit him into the medieval or fantasy setting of most D&D games I've either had to modify the story so that he's from a normal town or put him as someone who traveled across dimensions just for the adventure...
"Just for the Love of the game"
I used to have one member of the party who would join in on discord on a laptop in the middle of the room because he lived so far away from everyone else and it worked just fine honestly if they are dead set on not doing in person. I do wonder if its a transport issue or anxiety thing or what
It honestly might be worth it to ask š¤ but if you don't wanna pry, that's completely understandable. In that case, try to eliminate the reason why they don't wanna meet
It could be social anxiety, so you could say something like "it'll be fun! Think how close we've been lately, we could even bring snacks and pizzas"
It also could be a transport issue like snowpwn said
It definetly isnt a transport issue because we all live close. Social anxiety doesnt make sense either since we're all very close friends. I might ask him just to be sure though
The laptop thing might work if everyones comfortable with it, Thanks :)
I think the biggest thing that made that made it work smoothly was to cut off people in-person when my virtual buddy would join the RP, since theres always a lot of delay. Easier to get the people in person started back up than the virtual one (within reason ofc)
If you have a good webcam with a mic that'd go a long way, as well as a speaker that isn't just laptop speakers. Definitely more setup than you otherwise would need to do
Glad it worked for you, our group tried it but it kinda sucked
Now we hold up only in person play
Yeah YMMV, I 100% would much prefer all in-person if its doable
If transportation wasn't an issue. I would prefer in person games. There feels like a lot of time lag when people you are in a party with already live too far away statewise or countrywise.
Sometimes connection is extremely terrible to the degree that there is a great deal of time and lag between responses via call
D&D is a social game, so being flexible and willing to compromise aren't just nice qualities to have; they're essential!
I have social anxiety so I am hoping it doesn't get the best of me on Saturday for my first game with this group.
I agree, it's just a bit of a struggle, one thing I need to understand though is socially. I need to be able to stay in character, stop making schizophrenic characters who are aware of the dm. And to stop swearing,
But my excitement coupled with social anxiety usually leads me into tirades of swears
The social anxiety usually goes away quickly. It's people you see on a weekly basis and you eventually get comfortable with them
I sure hope so. Is it odd that it's easier to get into character ... But only when we're in the character costume?
It's not odd, it helps you feel more like your character so it makes sense
I would be wearing a custome if I had the chance to play at tables and not over the internet like now
It's one of the main reasons I want to finish the mask. Even though the mask can never fit into a fantasy setting,..
It's silly fun, ā¤ļø
I would be wearing a winter puffer, with the insides taken out to make it lighter, and then turned into food smuggle storage...
(used to have an old vintage weather tamer quilted puffer. With faux fur hood, I didn't read the instructions for how to properly wash it. So when I put it on heavy duty cuz it smelled putrid, I unknowingly destroyed the inner lining of polyester which led to maybe 80% of the cotton that filled the puffer spilling out entirely.
I think I've decided to play my character in homage to either Drizzt Duorden or Jarlaxle. Haven't decided which yet. What do you think would be best?
(I then sewed the lining shut and turned it into bonus storage for food.)
And I used it in real life as my Homebrew item
Coat of Holding
Those are two very different folks; whatās your character?
A Drow Warlock who has fled from the Underdark and is seeking adventure and to fight evil
Hmm, whatās your background?
Maybe #character-discussion would be a better spot for this line of conversation?
He hates the matriarchy of the drow and fought against them. He fled the Underdark and is trying to find his way on the surface world.
Sorry. You are probably right.
Sincerest apologies I will move my jacket description to said channel right away
All good. It takes time to learn what channels are here and what belongs where!
Thanks, quick question where would I put character art or Homebrew item pieces?
#dnd-arts-and-crafts for art, homebrew stuff in #homebrew.
and then another important thing is to remember which channel you're in at any given time. i'm stupidly bad for that sometimes.
Is it bad form to play with more than one group? My current one meets monthly. But there is another one that meets at my LCS that plays weekly. Thinking of doing both.
Not at all. If you've got the time, there's nothing wrong with playing multiple games.
no, just so long as you dont double book yourself on the same day/time , im running 7 campaigns and at least half my players have other games too
if someone gets mad at you for what you do on the rest of the week when you have a sunday game with them, thats a Them problem
I just verified everything and will be joining the weekly group next Tuesday. I meet the monthly for the first time on Saturday.
Im not sure where to ask this, but I am new to DnD trying to slow myself into a campaign if possible, but someone has messaged saying they have a campaign but I will need to pay for an artist for art for my character and I find this suspicious as they only messaged an hour after I tried signing up for another campaign and then they directed me to another account who was supposed to be the DM, now I know the rules say not outside problems in the server, I just want to understand if this is a common scam and I should just block and move on?
It's a scam
It's one of the most common DnD scams out there, you should never be told you have to pay the DM or someone else for character art
The only time you pay for character art is because you want to comission character art
Thank you, will proceed to block them
How do you find new DND parties and stuff?
we have the #find-a-game channels here, there's also LFG subreddits on Reddit, and LFG stuff on roll20
OK, thank youš
np
Yo
Hey guys I am looking for a dnd party in India ? New comer here so don't know anything about it. Can't find anything on finding games channel too
How cooked am I ?
Maybe try the Desis & Dragons Discord server? Or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2078334962230731/). Also, searching for india on this server netted me a number of people who say they live in India but can't find anyone to play with, so maybe send some messages and see if folks wanna game together.
How do I look up that server ?
Google it!
Aahh thank you so much
would a druid with one of the taken backstory be redundant?
Not sure what you mean exactly?
one of the taken gives 2 druid cantrips and spells
I don't know what the taken is.
It could be redundant, but I don't think it's a terrible choice. Myself, I'd rather use a feat to give me access to something my class wouldn't otherwise have.
i liked the idea of an Aarakocra being taken and being a druid that way, but fey-blessed can get me a similar backstory, and wizard spells
You're thinking of the Guide background for the Magic Initiate: Druid feat
Feats should be used to make your Character better at their main focus, or give them access to new tools that compliment their existing kit
how do you know when it's time to leave a campaign?
When you stop having fun
And there's no prospect of future fun
If you feel it may be time to leave, then it probably is
Hi, I'm new to the server. Which channel(s) should I go to for homebrew, map making, and world building advice?
Well, that makes sense, thank you.
Hey guys, me and my friends has been long interested in D&D but we're financially restricted, so we can't really afford to get all of the necessary books and stuff, but we'd like to ask, what's the most important book to get if we ever decide to get one, and will we be able to play, make characters, be a DM with just buying one book alone?
The PHB
Alternatively, you can use the free rules
Tha'ts enough to get you going
I was thinking of this one, but are all the necessary information needed included there already? Like mob stats, characters, races, etc?
and which version would you recommend we buy for the phb
Our bookstores are quite limited in D&D related stuff (sadly!) But we're also open to buying from amazon etc
Not necessarily, but of all the books, if you have to choose one, that's the one
But you'd still need to supplement it
As for editions, I suppose you could get the 5.5 (2024) version but if you're on a budget, get a used copy, or get a used copy of the 5.0 PHB (2014), which should be cheaper
Look up the Free Rules, its published on D&D Beyond, and there's a .pdf available
They contain most of what you need to get started, then you just need dice and your imagination (and a VTT if playing online)
If we decide to buy dices, what kinds and how many of each should you recommend we get
Dice are cheap, just get basic ones. Don't get tempted by custom dice made from moon rocks, or what have you. If playing IRL, each player ought to have a set, but they often come in packs of several complete sets, enough for your average table
I mean worse case just use google's free dice roller if need be
Yep, plenty of digital dice rolling options out there
But if playing IRL, may as well enjoy the satisfaction of rolling the dice yourself
actual dice
I just sold all my 7 dice sets to a friend of mine cuz I couldn't find the time to play a game because of my courseworks
Its a shame but it is what it is
But then you run the risk of getting a dice collection addiction šš
Which reminds me... moon rocks dice set... added to the list
I'm not a dice goblin. I can quit anytime I want to. š
"I'm not a dice goblin," says the dice dragon.
I want to make an assassin, I know i have to buy it. But is it something that I pick later in levels or can I choose it at the start of character creation?
Pick at level 3
Ahh ok thank you

Anyway @fossil iris , that above there is a list of free adventures should you decide to give it a try behind the screen. You could run them, rip them for ideas or just look through to see how a D&D adventure might be structured.
i have never played before. could i possibly DM a solo for myself on one of those starters ?
Getting some player-side experience in first is never a bad idea. Why not use the basic rules linked above and have a go at putting a character together for practice. Start with class, background and species, feel free to ask questions here.
Technically an option, yes, but it wouldn't be the same as a real game, naturally.
There's a demo somewhere. Let me see if I can dig it up.
Ah! Try this: https://www.dndbeyond.com/begin/en
yea i figured. getting through a session with me as the DM would take way too much time, with me trying to learn and remember as i go
The Honor Among thieves die Look pretty bad
Ahh Yes I remember frst Dming Being Nervous if your nervous always try I oneshot I learned that out the hard way
i am not much of a lead role person
creative thinking isn't that good on the fly either
Trust me your players want to feel like they have creative but your railroading them
Ideally a DM is putting down situations and scenarios that the players characters have the motivation to engage with and resolve, but that's getting into #dnd-discussion.
Yeah anyways back to starting playing
Trust me when I say this Older Players are super Kind to you they have patience espically because they once had no clue
So if you have friends or even connecions to people who might DM ask if you can join them
i've been watching people play on youtube today, hoping to retain some info lol
i know nobody that is into fantasy games
Anyone into Fantasy?
when i say fantasy i mean the whole goblins, elves, dragon, ect.
There are steampunk
Hi y'all! Hope you are doing well!! I am new to dming (I have played 2 campaigns) and want to host a session with my friends at college (all of whom are relatively new). Is there any online games I can watch or any channels where I can see how the DM role fully functions on video?
If you want to see what Players are like check out Legends of Aventerus on youtube
Shows you how much story progression the average session has too
Can i only cast 1 levelled spell per turn ? According to 2014 rules
Not quite:
If you want to cast a spell that has a casting time of 1 bonus action, remember that you canāt cast any other spells before or after it on the same turn, except for cantrips with a casting time of 1 action.
The limit isn't based on whether or not you cast a leveled spell, it's whether or not you cast any spell with a bonus action.
Do you have a decent grasp of the basics?
Howdy. The usual advice is to check out the free rules, just skim the first couple of sections, then have a go at making a character for practice.

hey guys
Class, background, species. Take your pick from the basic rules, no real wrong choices.
I'm playing as a lvl 8 rogue assassin, But been thinking about switching to inquisitive rogue, cause it fits my character well and more freedom in roleplay
my dm is allowing me to reconfigure my Stats
what should I be focusing on?
5e btw
Keep up Dexterity and Constitution, certainly. After that, what will benefit you most out of Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma? What skills do you use most frequently? Do you have any features or spellcasting that uses them?
Well I am planning to keep my dexterity at 20.I kinda left constitution at 12, Needed to invest in another stats
Well for intelligence and wisdom it's kinda hard to pick
Both of them are important from what I see
can't really choose between them
Look at your skills. Do you have more in one than the other?
18-14
was thinking about making them 1-1
inquisitive is mainly focusing on insight and investigation
You have 18 skills that use Intelligence and 14 skills that use Wisdom?
I should have specified: look at your skill proficiencies.
These would be your ability scores.
that's the freedom of playing a human I guess
Well currently Stealth and acrobatics are the toppers
should I switch the main focus to insight and investigation or try to balance it otherwise
How many of your character's skill proficiencies use Wisdom?
I'd lean on Wisdom then.
finding games i so hard are there any good sites for finding games
Aside from here, you could also try LFG on Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Razorwing also has a list in their profile: #dnd-newcomers message

wow. i never looked into that list from iamrazorwing until now. its very well done.
i'm sharing the link to it with credit into the resources on a neighbourhood association where i take part in a monthly gaming group event.
It's meant to be shared (and credited, but you've got that covered)!
Find live or recorded games on YouTube or Twitch. My favorite starter DM resources are the Quickstart Guide, this Ginny Di video, and Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series (though you don't need to watch all 100+ videos).
afternoon adventurers

How is everyone's day going?
good c:
much better. yesterday there were tornado warnings out the whazoo
thats two days of that stuff in the last 2 to 3 weeks.
Glad everything turned out well for you. I'll be getting into hurricane season soon myself
lets hope its a more mild one
Yes let's hope because I just moved more into the range of the usual hit spots
The dice of this world are not in my favor š š
i've started messing with the art scammers when they message me now. its kinda fun
Don't forget to report them as well to get them kicked/banned
can go to #moderator-support and ask for a private thread, then put the details in there
window's closed so i can't exactly take any screenshots
@atomic stream howdy sorry for a late reply, I also don't get notifications. Because of how many servers I'm in / downloads.
New lesson learned, when joining a new campaign do not mention your previous Banishments from several other campaigns in the past.
what was the reason you got kicked from previous campaigns?
Immature amount of swearing, breaking immersion. And at one point completely forgetting the story entirely
How did you break immersion?
Ask questions mid storyline. Because I kept forgetting what was going on..
And character had an inconsistent tone that would shift depending on who I was addressing...
(The other issue was that I made him aware of the DM and table
Granted, that's across six different session zeros, from 2011 to 2023
This is not a dig a you, but from what you've said, you sound like a disruptive player
Did not help that during that point. In time I was not in a positive headspace.
Didn't start trying to be positive until 2025.. where in which I retconned everything from the ground up
I don't treat it as a dig anyway, but even if it were. That was me then not me now
But I still can't help bringing up the past as a little reminder to myself of where I am now
Atleast you're working on your flaws
Yeah
I will admit though bringing up the past could likely be an extreme red flag
I think if I recall, I do still have the old character description. Somewhere in the server.
I'd recommend not speaking about the times you got kicked from campaigns in newer ones, let your progress speak for itself
Understood, PS I found the old character descriptions. I am quite proud of the retcons I've made
It's like going over your exes on a first date
That is a great comparison
Fair enough. Though my main issues I can't help but be honest.
If I could just tell the one lie that I've never played in a game. I can make it into the door.
You don't need to lie, but you don't need to divulge the entire unfiltered truth either tbh
Omission. Understandable.
"Yeah I have played in a few games before, never finished a campaign due to scheduling problems and such. Excited to get into a new one!"
Time constraints and improper rapport with the DM have led to many canceled storyline
Almost like saying I work at McDonald's versus
I take part in the food industry serving millions per year
I wouldn't even include the improper rapport part, kinda starts off on a bad foot anyways
It's progress though. I'll eventually have the right intro.
Time constraints and chemistry played a deep part in canceled stories
"Due to unforeseen circumstances the campaign ended early"
Due to unforeseen circumstances, such as technical difficulties in the imagination department.
Campaigns were closed early on.
"Metaphorical rocks fell and the campaign ended unexpectedly".
ā¦
I'm liking coming up with less descriptive simplified and more complex reasonings for a campaign closing
Simplified wording but compact meanings
Making my first character, she is a aasimar, acolyte cleric. Any ideas, suggestions, or even what to do and what not to do would be appreciated! Hoping to find my first game soon!
I am new to dnd and my friends got me interested and I want to delete a certain barbarian I made but I have two one is a Dragonborn and one is a Orc I canāt decide which one I should delete
when you say delete, do you mean on ddb?
Don't be afraid you make mistakes
In dnd beyond the app
Priorities your wisdom, then your constitution. Remember that you are not only regulated to being a healer, and that Clerics also buff and can do decent damage. Also donāt try to keep allies at max hp constantly on combat, wait till the next strike would down them, or when theyāre already downed.
Youāll never out heal damage, but using it to keep an ally up is very helpful. Or out of combat
I would keep them just incase one dies
Oh okay but which one would be better to use first my orc is strong but his intelligence is 7 -2 and my Dragonborn is strong and very intelligent and has lots of good stats
I couldn't tell you. I'm new myself, all I've done was make a character on d&d beyond
Oh okay
Use whichever one you want to play the most, if you don't like how it's going or feel like the character doesn't fit the story, voice your concerns to the DM
Okay š
Hi!
came up with a warlock, and my pact will be with a plant like from little shop of horrors

Hello! My name is Emily (or Em, whichever is easier!) and I'm BRAND NEW to dnd. It looks like it is so much fun and now that I have graduated from college and have no academic obligations, I wanted to try to get into it!
Any tips or suggestions, or just words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated! š
yeah, but instead of "Audry 2" it's "Venus the Voracious"
Welcome! The best place to start is by reading the free Basic Rules, linked in this channelās pins as well as in #learn-to-play
I like that idea
Welcome
Welcome, I'd suggest you start by getting your hands on a Players Handbook (PHB), or reviewing the Free Baisc Rules, available online or in pdf format
I recommend creating a practice character as you read through Chapter 1 & 2, and then getting feedback either in this channel or in #character-discussion . The more you know beforehand the easier it is to get into a group.
Then if you feel ready, try your hand at joining a group. To use this server to find one, the instruction can be found in #find-a-game
Hi š StarOfTheLight or is it okay that I call you star for short
Yup thatās totally fine!
Okay
DDB is the official tool so it is naturally oriented to all kinds of players
I will say that its homebrew system isnāt very well integrated, but thatās besides the channel topic
I kind of want to play a campaign right now so if anyone knows how to make one that would be great it would help us newcomers out a bit
If you wanted to use this server to find a game the instructions on how to make and respond to lfg posts are in #find-a-game
Okay thanks star
If a game isnāt explicitly advertised as newbie friendly itās always worth it to ask.
Iād just warn that it may take a while to find a game. Thereās a lot more players than DMs so while games are posted every day spots can fill up fast.
To that end I recommend casting your net wide. This server isnāt the only place to find games. Hereās some other recommendations:
- Other D&D/TTRPG discords
- Other D&D/TTRPG online communities (e.g. Facebook groups, Redditās r/lfg, D&DBeyond forums)
- Local game stores and libraries
Okay so I read some of the DND Beyond basic rule book and I still donāt understand
What do you not understand
The Six Abilities part of the book
What part about them?
All of it
Thatās a bit nonspecific. Like what theyāre used for, how to calculate them, etc?
Except the part where it tells what each stat means
so in essentials
you get your stats via either rolling, allocating them by point buy or standard array
the most common way to roll stats is through rolling 4 d6s (dices with 6 faces) with them and dropping the lowest number
Mainly the modifiers part
Thatās stat generation, which isnāt until chapter 2. Weāre talking about the fundamentals.
there's a table in the book that tells you what mods you get from each stat score
Each stat score relates to a different modifier, as explained in the modifier table a few sections down
obviously higher numbers get you higher mods and lower numbers get you lower mods
For 30 it says plus 10
Yup
The section immediately after that explains when you would need to use an ability modifier
essentially starting from 10, it's every two numbers gets you a +1 to your mod
Modifiers are +0 at 10, ever 2 steps (12/14/16 and so on) the modifier increases to +1/+2/+3 and so on,
this also works into negatives (8/6/4) gives you a modifier of -1/-2/-3
A character with 16 Int has a +3 Modifier for their Int stat
A character with 14 Con has a +2 con modifier
And 1 says minus 5 and 2-3 says minus 4 and 4-5 says minus 3 and 6-7 says -2
10-11: 0
12-13: +1
13-14:+2
10 is the baseline
thus 8-9 is -1
and 6-7 is -2
10 is what you would expect an average person to have
I think Iām starting to understand a bit
The more, or less, you have of an ability, the better, or worse you are at carrying out tasks associated with that ability, like STR for kicking down a door, say
The modifers, positive or negative, reflect that
So my orc barbarians intelligence say 5 with a multiplier of minus 3 so would that mean for him
it means you get a -3 on rolls related to intelligence
Oh
He not so smart
He fail at INT based tasks
He should bonk instead
Modifiers are used to calculate how good you at certain tasks for example.
Skills like Investigations or History use your INT modifier, if you have 16 int (a modifier of +3) you have a base Investigation/History skill of +3.
You then also add proficiency if you are proficent at certain skills (you choose certain skills on which you get a proficency bonus to)
Conversely, your Orc Barb:
Is very stronk
Can push enemies into next week
etc
to explain the skill stuff
different skills use different stat mods
And his strength says 18 with a multiplier of 4 so that mean for strength based rolls it would add 4 more
This is explained in the section that immediately followed the stat-modifier table you were talking about, SilentOne
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#D20Tests
yeah
Yes. So in the kicking down door example (involves the Atheltics skill, usually), your Barb would have the advantage over the skinny Wizard (with INT)
Ok I understand now so every skill has multiplier and the base rolls for those stats the multipliers will either add or subtract from them correct
And if it wasn't clear, each Skill is tied to a particular ability, the more points you have in that ability, the better you are at its associated tasks - plus a host of other things, like Saves, and Attacks
(you get proficiencies from your class and backgrounds)
I will say that if youāre mentioning having an Int of 5, which indicates you rolled for stats. When you get to Chapter 2 for character creation, for newbies we recommend using Standard Array or Point Buy over Rolled stats. rolling is almost exclusively done under DM supervision to prevent cheating
It seems complex, but it's not, you'll get the hang of it
Ok I understand a bit anyways I got to go Iām gonna watch some mandolorian with my aunt down stairs
Bye
Donāt worry about what Standard Array or Point Buy means just yet. Wait until you get to the part of the Basic Rules that explains them
Yea a tab bit overwhelming but over time I'll learn it
do fey/faeries have natural enemies? or a race that would be likely to take them?
Other Fey š
Hello there, my name is Random, but you can me Meudy as well. I am here because I love Fantasy and worldbuilding, and DnD is the best place to do that.
Welcome. Let us know if you have questions
Hey guys Iām back I was wondering while I was reading the barbarian part of the dnd beyond basic rule book I saw something that said d12 per barbarian level what does it mean
You mean hitdice?
Sounds like Hit Dice, yes, the dice you roll for your hit points
Barbs are tough. Much hit dice.
Yea itās right next to something that says hit point die
