I am aware. Which is why i took so long ot try this game in the first place.
Sounds like a rough go, even If you are paying for a game it may not be a great table to play at, it can take a while to find a great table.
The first game i played in was so terrible I learned what NOT to do
Im trying to learn but #learn-to-play has so much information and i don't want to read it 😔
Learn to play has information i already know and does not go over some of the specific social challenges when thigns are not going well and how to navigate them.
It's just so much information and I don't know where to start and I'm afraid to get absorbed into reading it and ignoring important things because I'm a slow ahh reader
Would a healer still be considered a wizard/witch/spellcaster?
Wizard is a class. Spellcaster is a category of classes
Clerics are the best healers in 5e and 5.5e but they can do a crapload of other stuff
They're the only class that gives you a choice between 100% full caster and gish (mix of magic and martial) as a built in part of the class
There's Life Domain to go the full healer route and expend so few resources on it that you can use them on everything else (like BEEG DAMAGE)
Light domain to be a radiant and fire damage based blaster (and you get fireball!)
What's the e stand for?
edition
???
5e = 5th edition
5th edition of what??
Sorry I'm completely new to this
No worries! Obviously more than the rules changed as the new editions came out (there were expanded classes and subclasses, races and subraces, locations, etc.)
But it's easiest to go by new edition = new stuff/new rules lol
I think Im following 😼
Arcana to get bonus spells and get wizard stuff
Knowledge to get skills, gather information and some enchantment
Nature to be a part druid (kinda underpowered though)
Peace to buff your party
Twilight to protect your party and get a bit of edge
Grave for a mix of support and offense and more edge
Death for damage and to be the edgiest cleric of all
Going down the rabbit hole of all the changes can happen once you're more comfortable with everything
So what class is a healer? I don't like being in the battle, I prefer staying back and helping
Forge for fire and to make stuff
Order for debuffs and more enchantment
Tempest for damage and control
Trickery for disruptive support
War for gishing/mixing martial and magical stuff
Clerics, bards, druids
???
Although you'll get a lot more stuff to play with than just healing
You'll usually have to participate in battle in some fashion, tbh, unless you have a large enough party that your fellow players are able (and willing) to protect your character
But Shiny is right - clerics, druids, and bards are often healers
Clerics literally pick a god and pray. You'll be dedicated to a god, philosophy or concept that defines your subclass, "domain" in the case of clerics, and cast divine magic. You're the best healers in the game, but you can do a lot more than just heal.
They also have the largest selection of subclasses out of any class in the game
I've been watching Legends of Avatris
Weeelllll technically speaking doesn't have to be a god.
It's more, faith in a divine domain. It's just that typically it goes hand in hand with worshipping a god and a domain of theirs.
Bards are artists and performers. Subclasses, or bardic colleges, define what kinds of arts you specialise in, although there's still a lot of room for flavour. For example, an Eloquence bard can be a debater or a spoken-word poet. You'll get a wide range of supportive and disruptive spells. And you'll be good at a variety of different skills, actually, every skill in the game
The issue here is any adventurer will typically get in a battle. Most of the game rules revolve around the rules of what happens in a fight, and what special things you can do in a fight.
You can certainly try and stay back and help, but even a "Healer" would do good to keep in mind that stopping enemies earlier means a lot less overall damage they have to heal.
And druids kick butt because you can wildshape and that's legitimately so fun when you learn how to utilize it
If Id have to fight I'd probably use a mace yk the ones with like spikes all over them
Well, technically speaking
a Mace does 1d6 bludgeoning damage. The spiky thing, a Morningstar, does 1d8 Piercing damage.
However, a Cleric isn't going to entirely want to focus on the strength to use those specifically, perhaps instead focusing on the Wisdom to have more effective spells. A cleric could just stay back and cast the Sacred Flame cantrip from 60 feet away for free, for example.
Moon druids do plenty of that. But there are other good subclasses too. How would you like to summon animals and fey in battle? How about animals made of fire? How about turning into a Last of Us fungus monster? How about a literal murder constellation?
Oh I know - I usually play druids exclusively and I am overly fond of moon circle druids but the other subclasses are seriously awesome too - I know they're not fully the same in BG3 but my current tactician run is a star circle druid and I'm having a blast
I play them often enough that in my current campaigns outside of BG3 I'm actively trying not to play druid just so I branch out more in irl D&D lol
I'm going to head to bed! Thanks @wheat oxide @topaz garnet @young summit for being patient with my stupid questions! 😼
No such thing as a stupid question, especially when you're trying to learn something new! Nini friendo!
Welterusten :3
No probs!
I’m very new to playing DND, I’ve literally never played, how do I even find people to play with?

I’m down to play! I haven’t played much and would love to join up with people to play with
so uhh im new to dnd i wanna play a game but i don't wanna mess anything up anyone beginner friendly wanna play
Well if you've checked out the basic rules and things listed in the bot message above I advise you to simply browse in #looking-for-players there's usually advertisements for new player friendly games or new player oriented games
And even if there aren't, unless otherwise mentioned many groups are still fine with new players as long as they have at least the basic understanding of the rules, and are willing to learn
Oh I’m sorry I checked rules i just didn’t see that I’m sorry
Oh and I have a question how would I go about playing online
Well typically (this can vary) you'll be playing on VTT (virtual tabletop) such as roll 20 or foundry and usually people get in VC as well.
Ty
What order of operations should I follow for making a character
PEMDAS :3
I believe there's a step by step guide in the free rules, player's handbook you can follow, and when using Beyond or other VTTs theyll gove you options in order
But overall I don't think the order really matters much, if at all. All you're doing when making a character is determine your stats, check your race/species, class, background, what features they give, and writing them down on your sheet
Class --> subclass --> species/race --> background
Got it got it, thanks
yeah even when starting at level 1, considering what kind of subclass you will get later helps influence character behaviour and the gameplay fantasy you want
Lookin for a cool text style game
Thank you I’ll be sure to check it out
Check #looking-for-players to see if there's anything that interests you, or put up something in #looking-for-dm
Even if you're playing 5.5e when all classes get subclasses at level 3, classes that got subclasses at level 1 in 5e tend to have the most thematically important subclasses. Such as clerics, warlocks, sorcerers
better to think of that as more "when do you get your special mechanical benefits from the specific thing you're getting power from" since I have seen some people (somehow) think of it as not engaging with 'the thing giving you power' until the subclass level
is there a specific place we have to make characters and guidelines or am i good to use dnd beyond roll 4d6 reroll 1s
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
Every DM has different rules for character creation. If you are a beginner, it can be good to make a practice character. 4d6 drop the lowest is one of the three common methods.
im not new to dnd just wanted to join an actual table instead of doing westmarch
Then it would be best to find a group before making your character and ask the DM if there are any restrictions/changes to character creation.
Chances are though DnD beyond will be fine

Hello everyone! I'm new to the world of DnD. I discovered it during the beta of BG3, and I fell in love with the possibilities of the universe and the outcomes.
I’d like to get into it step by step without feeling overwhelmed by the system. I’ve already participated in a Role Play's one-shot, but it wasn’t related to the DnD universe.
I’d love to try my first campaign or one-shot with other players, but I don’t want to be a burden as a beginner.
Also, I’m French and I’d like to improve my English by playing with others ♥️
Do you have any advice on where to start looking as a player who wants to play and improving his english?
I know campaigns can take time, so I don’t want to join a group and slow them down because i don't know the time going over a campaign can take.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and have a lovely day ~~

Give it a go. You can use the info in the post above, or try Reddit, Roll20 or LFG on the D&D Beyond forums to find groups.
If it's any help, there's a French version of the rules available here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/srd
Just be clear about what you're looking for, as you did in your post here. Good luck!
Thanks for your fast response ! I will give it a go🫡 ❤️
Oh I forgot! Haven’t introduced myself!!!! Morning everyone! Name is Maria Williams, still somewhat a newcomer to D&D and Pathfinder 2e! Love playing wizards and witches… well just not the type you’re thinking (definitely anime and light novel influenced 😂)!!!
Hi im new. my name is moon. I wanna play dnd with people so i joined this server.(dont really have ppl playing dnd here) im a korean but i lived in america for a few years so im flunt with english(not very but enough to communicate).
I like watching anime and playing games. I draw and do cosplays as well
Nice to meet you moonfollower!
Wahzzup folks!

Witch Hat Atelier?
Thanks (okay WHY IN THE SEVEN HELLS IS MY PASTE FUNCTION NOT WORKING?!)
Good question
Uh… more like TBATE, Nanoha, Owl House, Nauseverse, and the Irregular at Magic High School if it wasn’t a waste of potential!
YO TBATE MENTIONED.
Peak
They go straight to the food supply of our resident dragon Themberchaud
Oh come on, I wanted to do the “Praise the Fool” gif!
Don’t feed the dragon, he’ll get fatter than he already is
ROFL!!!! 🤣
The actual answer is that no gifs help the mods prevent people from posting inappropriate and other rule-breaking gifs
So, what's a racial ASI? Google isn't helpful
Oh
First time I heard of that. Racial ASI? Google sucks! I’ve switched search engines!
It’s the stat bonus you get in 2014 rules by choosing a species. Each species has a different one (in 2014).
Racial ASIs are a feature of 2014 5e species that give you a bonus to some of your base ability scores
stands for "Ability Score Increase"
In 2024 5.5e they were removed in favor of giving the bonuses to backgrounds, making them now “background ASIs”
Oh
...Ah. Okay that's interesting. But yeah I'm still struggling lol
Building a character?
Think of it as “you’re better at these stats because you’re this race”
Yeah, a lizardfolk.
What do you need to know?
If I may ask, have you read through the free Basic Rules or Player’s Handbook yet?
Just a question, how to play DND online? Do I use a website like roll20? If so, what would you recommend?
You’ll typically use a few different tools:
- A communications platform (e.g. Discord)
- A virtual tabletop (e.g. Maps, Owlbear Rodeo, roll20)
- A character sheet hoster (e.g. D&DBeyond)
Oh okay thank youu!
Yeah, still trying to make sense of it all though. It's pretty daunting
Which part are you struggling with? Stats? Class? Backstory?
We might be able to help.
Idk if this is the right channel but ill ask anyways
I have been playing dnd for 1 and a half years but i dont seem to know much about dnd and understand it as someone should for me to be playing for so long i mean i barely know what any of my spells do on my sheet and i just keep spamming firball and i need help from chatgpt everytime i make a new character
Does anyone have any tips for me to learn more about dnd other than just playing cuz i have done that
I wouldn’t recommend using ChatGPT to start off. LLMs have no understanding of the rules and frequently make mistakes, especially ones that aren’t immediately obvious.
Would it be rude of me to say read?
Read what your spells do, and what your class does.
That’s generally all you need.
I have but i struggle to understand it and often forget them
The basic rules have a good step by step guide to creating a character: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
I would heavily recommend doing this "by hand" at least once. You're going to learn so much about how characters fundamentally work in D&D, and what all the numbers mean.
You could do a few dot points on what each spell does next to it
If you have access to a printer, you could even do it with pen and paper. Old school
I've been told for my character to get accepted I need to add my character's Racial ASI (or background it seems to be now). I could show what I got so far to give ideas. If that means anything
Showing it can’t hurt
Thx
Ill do that thx
Do you know what version of lizardfolk you’re using btw? Volo’s or Mordenkainen?
If all else fails there’s nothing wrong with keeping the actual BR/PHB on hand to look up spells and features
Most recent is Mordenkainen, which has a +2 and +1 to any two stats, or a +1 to three stats
If you made your sheet on D&DBeyond you can send the share link here. Otherwise if you made it via some other method you can upload the sheet to a trusted filesharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that
It's a template from the discord server I'm in. Dunno if I'm supposed to share it
Are you able to download it into a PDF format or similar?
It's in google spreadsheet
What are your stats right now?
I'll have to continue this later, I gotta get back to work
Core stats: (without bonuses)
Str: 15
Dex:10
Con: 13
Int: 7
Wis: 12
Cha: 7
Rolled stats?
A spreadsheets link should be fine to share too!
For a new character what should i make cuz im kinda getting bored of wizards ngl
Do you want something completely different or in the same realm as Wizard?
Not sure either way
I’ll recommend you one of my favorite classes then, Paladin
Paladins are nice
I rolled... cleric, ranger, sorcerer. Pick one, use the flavour of another. Nature priest. Devout font of divine power. Outlander shaman.
Thats actually a cool idea
Hi everyone,
My partner and I have been really eager to play D&D together, but neither of us knows how to get started, understand the rules, or who to turn to for guidance.
If you’re experienced with the game and wouldn’t mind helping out, please send me a direct message—I have quite a few questions and I’d prefer not to clutter up the main chat with them.
Looking forward to hearing from you! 🎲
I’d rather not do DM’s, and would like to note that asking questions in a question chat is perfectly fine and expected/normal.
that being said!

Got some videos and guides linked in the post just above if you're looking for a starting point.
Hello everyone, I’m reaching out to you for advice and guidance. I’ve always been fascinated by the world of Dungeons & Dragons, but it’s only now that I’ve taken the first step toward actually joining it. I need guidance on the classes in this world for my original character.
I already have the basic concept for my character: an anthropomorphic creature that’s a mix of a red lynx and a snow leopard. She’s a mercenary with a team of three, accompanied by a Herrumbros cat and a Colocolo cat. My character wields two small axes and uses hidden weapons for ranged combat—daggers and a hidden weapon in an assassin-style wristband. I’ve also created a basic character sheet (illustration), but I still feel very lost when it comes to classes and the D&D world in general.
I’d really appreciate any help and advice you can give me on how to best integrate into this amazing world.
Hello and welcome! The first thing I'll do is direct you to the Basic Rules, which are in the bot post just two messages above yours. Those rules have everything you'll need to get started.
The second thing is that I'll try to set some expectations about your character. Some of the things you're describing are easy to achieve for a level 1 character, but others are much less so. I can explain more if you'd like.
Gooooodmorning
Ooh, a dnd community that I'm finally able to welcome myself inside~
Hi, thank you very much. I'll start reviewing the bot's message, and I'd really appreciate a detailed explanation about my character.
First off question and I hope it wasn't start rude, what do they usually do in here?
We discuss D&D - this specific channel is to help folks new to D&D get help getting started with learning the core game rules/mechanics, basic questions, etc.

Thanks
I want to start playing DND but I can't learn by being told yk?
Sure thing. I'll start off by saying that the primary thing to remember when designing a character in DnD is that you pick your character options (species, class, abilities, weapons, items, etc) from a list of pre-existing options that the game provides you. It's not a free form roleplay game where you design your options from scratch.
Your description of an anthro feline sounds most like a Tabaxi, which is a feline species in DnD. Unfortunately, it's not one of the free species available by default, but it's probably closest to what you're imagining.
As for your mercenary friends... I don't think it'll be very likely you'll get to play around much in this space. You don't usually get additional allies in DnD, you just play the one character and work with the other players who are playing their own characters.
Lastly, DnD doesn't have any 'hidden weapons' by default. Hand Axes and Daggers are both viable weapons on their own, though.

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
I see. I just did a quick search on tabaxis, and they’re definitely the closest match to what I had in mind. But if, as you say, they aren’t one of the species available by default, then how could I make my vision a reality so I can still use this species?
As for the groups… I had imagined that possibility. It’s unfortunate but acceptable; I understand why that’s the case.
Finally, regarding weapons... For me, the main weapons would be the small machetes. The daggers and the hidden weapon would be secondary weapons, more for long-range combat...
I actually made a detailed character sheet about this... I’d like to show it to you if it would help you better understand my concept... The character sheet is in color, but the details—which cover the weapons and travel gear—are still just line art since I haven’t finished them yet. But at that stage, it’s already pretty clear. Although I’m not sure how to share the images with you, hahaha.
I also have a lot of questions about the classes... What classes are available?
Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
Tabaxis are an available species, but they're not one of the free species. In order to gain access to their information, you would have to purchase the pack that has the Tabaxi species abilities and information in it.
As for your image, you can share it in #dnd-arts-and-crafts as long as it's not AI generated.
For classes, the list of classes can be found here in the Basic Rules. Though it seems as though English isn't your first language if you're using a translator. There are a few translated versions of the Basic Rules. What language do you speak? It might be available in your language.
GIYSSSS
I read the whole #learn-to-play page 😼
Took me about 15 minutes but I got through it 🙂↕️
Nice! If you've got any specific questions about the game, we can certainly help out here
I see... at least there's a way to get the species I want. Thank you so much. Honestly, you've really helped me understand and learn more about the species I'm looking for.
As for the image, it's 100% mine—I don't use AI for my designs.
And about the language, hahaha, yeah, you're right, I'm using a translator. Is it that obvious? Hahaha. My native language is Spanish.
It wasn't directly obvious, but you left the message at the bottom of your other post that says it was translated
Here's the simplified rules in Spanish: https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/srd/5.2/SP_SRD_CC_v5.2.1.pdf
Hopefully this helps!
No seems pretty straightforward but I don't have any dice, I can use online dice right?
Usually, yeah.
In 99.9% of cases, your DM will provide you a method of dice rolling that they can see as well
Hahaha, I forgot to check that. Hahahaha
Thank you so much for the guide and your patience. I'm going to start reading it right now.
What are the tags for? Like how there is Pride, Wizard? Are they just the class you use more or something?
It's just to add a little flair to your name here in the server.
Once you've gotten a good understanding of the Basic Rules, you can use our #find-a-game channel to begin your search for a group here on this server.
Someone make this man a mod and if you are you're doing great 😃👍

Started learning yesterday
Ok thx
Oh nice!
Hey there
finally home, can actually focus on tis character sheet
Welcome new people! Enjoy your stay!
Just to be certain, does a spellcasting class need a focus to cast their spells
No, what a spell casting focus does is allow you to fullfill the material component (m) of a spell without having the actual material (this only applies to spells which dont mention a gold cost)
An alternative to focus is the component pouch
So, it would be more cost effective for a wizard to start with a component pouch instead of a focus
They've got different prices, yes.
A component pouch costs 5 times as much as a focus (25g vs 5g)
Well, that depends on if the dm has the cost of the players' starting equipment taken out of their starting money
I'm not really sure what you mean by that. Players either start with a set of equipment or with a flat amount of money.
I can't remember what my friend did for the one session of the one shot we did
Helloo. Does anyone know if AboveVTT works on mobile?
Technically yes a component pouch is more valuable puece of starting equipment. In reality though its gonna make the smallest of differences so pick which youd prefer for your charactee
Youre unlikely to sell your component pouch or focus anyways because well you need it for casting
I just need help finding a game
Allegedly yes, though it might take a smidge of fiddling: https://www.reddit.com/r/AboveVTT/comments/17b3w8l/abovevvt_on_android_phone/
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Still have no idea what to do
Type
/looking
in this channel, pick the option for DM, hit Send. You should get a form to fill out. The more information you can provide about what kind of game you're looking for, the better.
Sicc

No. Type it in this channel.
What now?
/looking for dm
Forgot the -
/looking-for then pick the dm option
Or just /looking and then select the option from the Monodrone prompt.
Yeah but do you want to let people know you're looking for a game?
The /looking-for dm option gives you a form to fill out that the bot will use to create a post in #looking-for-dm to tell folks you're looking for a game
Great! Fill in your particulars, keep an eye on the thread and your DMs, wait to be contacted.
How do I fill in the particulars?
You can also review the games posted in #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community to see if any sound interesting - then direct message the game poster or use the thread attached to the game post to communicate your interest
When you send the request it comes up with a form. Answer the questions there and send that.
Hi all, Im about to be a DM for the first time (in fact, I never played before, as well as my friends)
Which starter set do you all recommend?
I hear folk like Heroes of the Borderlands, the new one.
heroes of the boardlands is the standard starter set for 5.5e, but really tho any works, avoid waterdeep and wild beyond the witchlight for now i'd say there's not much combat, in general intrigue campaigns are harder to run and homebrew is either easier then most or harder depending on how familiar with dnd & storytelling are u
man, i gotta figure out how to make the yellow character sheets from the welcome to the hellfire club set not yellow. they just destroy my eyes
use a online photo editor
wait, like scan it in and remove the background and print it out? that might actually work.
yea exactly
What is the best way to play DND online though? Mainly for free, me and my players are all practically broke and cannot afford to go through online platforms paying
discord if u want, there a dnd bot look online at dndbeyond
Is there a good platform to host like, maps/tokens and such?
otherwise there's a bunch of other websites, dndeyond obv, but it cost money iirc, map making websites usually cost money except for a few, all the good ones does those
do to dm
dndbeyond, owlbear rodeo, shard, roll20, foundry, there's some others.
didn't there used to be stuff for tabletop simulator? is that still a thing?
Keyword: free
Tabletop sim is very expensive if you're buying for 4 people xD
good point
Especially if you're not playing much with it, I don't mind buying it if we'll play more with it
AboveVTT is a browser extension that works great with DNDbeyond. It even allows use of books in DNDbeyond so you can plug in scenes directly from the books
(note that D&DBeyond does not support third-party extensions like AboveVTT or Beyond20)
hello folks
howdy. Let us know if you have any questions
using the windows photo thing was a bust, it ended up removing most of the text. however, printing in grayscale seemed to work alright.

Well, while listening to dnd games can help I do recommend you check out the basics above if you're not totally sure of the rules anymore. Once done you can check out #find-a-game
Hi never played dnd online or in person wonder what I have to download to play like table top sim or smtn or idk we roll dice irl and trust each other or what
No downloads needed per se. Just the free basic rules (check pinned messages here), character sheets (a way to track your character abilities/features), a way to roll dice (digital or physical), a way to communicate. Then a group to play with.
Of course the group you’re playing with may have preferred tools they use
?tag new online
Yea I was wondering for online but I just finished the video after I asked lol sorry
Is Lightfoot Halfling Swashbuckler Rogue 3/Hexblade Warlock 1 a good starting point?
I'd personally say that it's about 3 levels too high to be a good starting point
If you’re a new player I’d suggest staying away from multiclassing until you have more experience as well
Multiclassing can make character options more complex
Are you in a game where your DM is saying you'll be starting at level 4?
Depends what you mean for starting point. As a class? As a new player? If as new players I'd suggest against multi classing, more to juggle when you do and multi classing can fall behind other classes outside of very niche actions.
I'm not a new player, I just didn't know where to put this
Just starting point could be read in multiple ways.
As a class, he is a "hexbuckler"
If you're looking for advice about character builds, we have #character-discussion .
This channel is for players who are new to the game.
As a multi class it isn't bad in a vacuum but it's possible that later on unless you've got a specific goal planned you may feel like your lagging behind. For example you spell casting will lag behind and your sneak attack can lag behind depending on how you level up. If it's good depends on what you want out of it. Alot of multi class builds either take too long to get online or they fall behind honestly.
Hey, where do you find campaigns on this server? I’m new here.
over at the #find-a-game channels
Thank you!

I’m having a hard time trying to learn how to use the public commands of the server, which I found in https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/520323544811569176. I’m likely imputing the command incorrectly, as I practice in https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/552960259799515147
discord is currently experiencing outages, and this server has been hit by that. The bot could be offline or not functioning correctly at the moment
Ah thank you, because it works with the tutorial commands
The term homebrew can refer to a few things, but mostly means "unofficial rules," or rules that you won't find in an official D&D publication.
Homebrewing can be a Dungeon Master creating their own monster from scratch, writing their own adventure, or deciding to permit changes to existing rules to better fit their table or players' needs.
It's important to note that homebrew rules are only acceptable at non-organized tables, and homebrew rules cannot be used at Adventurers League tables. Always check with your DM on what homebrew is (or isn't) permitted at your table.

Hi im new I created a character and don’t know any campaigns to join with my friends.
I'm new, and I'm looking to join a campaign, too.
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

This is a very silly question. But, if a character is killed in one campaign, can they be used elsewhere or is that character like, dead?
If they fit they can be used in any campaign
Well, two campaigns are like two different stories, so what happens in one has no bearing in the other.
Unless deliberately made so by the DM.
I do understand that if a character dies in one campaign they stay dead unless revived somehow
Yeah, within one story, death is somewhat permanent. There are various resurrection spells that can be used to bring characters back, but they are usually high level and expensive.
The cheapest one is a level 3 spell, costs 300 gp and is only useable within a minute of death.
https://www.dndbeyond.com/spells/2618956-revivify
That makes sense otherwise people would just be popping outta the ground like daisies lol
At higher level play it do kinda be like that sometimes
Hello?
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
Wahzzup Nugget³!
:D
Your profile pic is so cute
Tytyty
Would you like to learn how to play?
What do you know?
Also hi new here, I’m Nugget.
Oh no, I'm an veteran in the game, not a specialist, but I know my way around
Oh I see
The thing I came here for, it's because I'm going back into playing
Well you can just chill, hang out. #channel-guide can help ya-
Oh getting a game?
you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Not actually... But thanks for the invite
I'm already in too many campaigns/adventures
But they're from other systems
Like Fabula Última or Tormenta 20
But my boyfriend will DM dnd again, so I'm here to refresh
And learn about the Forgotten Realms setting, cause... I don't really know where to look first
#dnd-lore then, for this
The forgotten realms wiki is also good
No problemo! See ya around.
Hello everyone, im New here, just wanted to know if there is an option to specifically join, search or post for oneshot campaigns?
Thanks a lot
Yeah i found that, thank you, but i Was talking more about a specific "channel" that is made only for oneshot searches and posts, is there one?
I don’t think so
You can search https://discord.com/channels/516367331358801950/750813601358676008 for the term "one shot" and that should help
Some of the community servers have more dedicated one-shots - can also look through #looking-for-community
Out of curiosity, why specifically one-shots?
How do you learn to play only with unexperienced players
Everyone could watch this introductory video series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLfS8QgUdeGYr-v1QfBH4x_diAZ7SGNFj4
And the person who DMs could also watch the Running the Game series by Matt Colville: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-YZvLUXcR8&list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
And of course, everyone benefits from reading the basic rules!
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
It might not sound super exciting, but some time studying Basic Rules goes a long way
A campaign that finishes first session. Like 1 session campaigns
I know what they are. Though sometimes they run long and spill over into a second session.
I meant why are you looking for one-shots?
I'm not a fan of the online free rules layout and flow. The 5e Starter Set rulebooks were so much easier to absorb.
This may not be their reasoning but one-shots are a good way to meet and play with people you don't know, it's provides a way to learn the rules without having to commit to a campaign, and can open the door to finding a group you want to play a campaign with
I prob discussed this before, but does anyone have tips for someone who doesn't want to dm, but has to dm because we're a small group of 3 in total and the two others have much less experience, and I kind of have an idea for a oneshot to try it out but I procastinated for like 5 months etc. I just don't know how to even get in the mood because I've never even roleplayed on voice properly
when using a two handed weapon like a longbow, can i have a melee weapon equipped on me and still use the bow?
or another weapon that isnt necesarilly melee
You can have a different weapon on your person or in your pack, but it's not "equipped" until it's in your hand/s.
I'm kinda getting forced into a dnd session soon and I'm horrible at deciding on a class, which one would be best for a character who is a thinly veiled reference to dragon ball?
Forced? I certainly hope not forced
But Monk is a classic choice for a Dragon Ball adjacent option.
To the first point: I genuinely think that DMing requires at least some excitement at the prospect. Without that, I don't think you will have a good time.
But the good thing is: it can be super fun even if you're not doing voices or get deep into roleplay. Even if you are shy an an introvert (been there). It's a genuine skill you can build up and few things can feel as good as a session where you and your players had fun!
What often helps me is to look for existing material and run those, so I have less of a burden of prep. If you do want to make something yourself, I think there are some good resources online, including in the DMG.
Even a DM doesn't have to do voices. You can totally do descriptive instead of active roleplay.
E.g. "The character does" instead of "I do"
"The tavern keeper tells you about a quest: clear out giant spiders that have infested the mine".
It kinda is, since its a school thing, I could always be a bump on a log and decide to sit it out like a meanie
if i want to equip a weapon, so for example i was shooting with a bow and now wants to use a dagger, do i need to use interact with object
noted thank you so much^^ I don't think I'll ever enjoy dming but I have no other choice as I have no one to play with
That's one way, yes. Every time you make an attack using the attack action on your turn, you can choose to draw or stow a weapon before or after the attack "for free".
What helped me is this youtube series by Matt Colville: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlUk42GiU2guNzWBzxn7hs8MaV7ELLCP_
He tends to explain Dming in a way that makes it so obvious and not really all that different from playing.
There's no secret sauce, no inherent talents. You can just do it if you want to.-
ill check it out! thank you a lot
Astral self and sun soul both look really cool, ugh, I hate being indecisive
Both are really fun, and they also fill similar niches.
I think Sun Soul is more classically DBZ though.
Y
there's plenty of artificer stuff going on in DragonBall.

Hello! 👋😊😁
So I'm like. . . Stupid new to D&D I am not new to role play necessarily I play with friends using the ironsworn campaign so I was wondering how d&d works lol
Should I build a character before or after joining a game?
After is preferable that way you don't waste time making a character that doesn't fit in your DMs world. But I still make characters anyway cause it's fun.
I just don't expect any dm to say I can use them
Gotcha. Thanks!
We usually do a session with my Dm that we set world and characters at the same time

Welcome
Hey hey! Welcome to the server!
What a curious name
He’s a myconid, so I did mushroom based name
A myconid? That's interesting. I don't think I've seen someone play a myconid before
Now you have.
He’s based on the fly agaric mushroom. But he’s chubby.
Ok i am new to this thing , , , i'm scared 🥹🥹
DnD or whatever its called seems cool so uh Uhmm uhhhhh ,,, <_<'
Uhm im so scared to talk in this server this is a new experience 🥹🥹
Are you looking for any help or information in particular?
Uhhh yeah i need help on WHAT DO YOU DOOO HOW DO YOU DO ANYTHING
Also another thing is like most dnd communities are filled with grown adults and im kinda scared because i am some random minor (under 17 yes the rules say you can give a rough age range i think so that too) but wait im talking too much
Im scared 🥹🥹🥹
Don’t be scared, D&D is generally a very welcoming community

Woahj ok im looking at that now !!! :P
Okay the thing is in those rules there are a lot of limks

Im scared of getting a virus or getting hacked or ip logged
Or something idk, , , 💔
This is the official D&D server, you can trust links from them
Okay I'll try
hi guys, i want to run a simple dnd campaign with my friends and watched a few videos but still don't have anny good ideas.
do you guys have any tips?
I recommend Matt Colville’s YouTube series Running the Game for all DMs. You might also want to consider a premade campaign like LMoP if you’re new.
thank you very much
I can second running a premade campaign
If you're playing in person, I recommend picking up the Heroes of the Borderlands starter set
It also includes maps and dice that will be useful for a long time after
Then the starter set is still good (I actually played it online). I think the adventure setup is solid and it's fairly straightforward to run.
For other resources, DDBeyond has a "free stuff" collection here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1827-adventuring-on-a-budget-the-free-d-d-resources-on
It includes some adventures too
if i start a campaign will i need to improvise the story or do the players normally stay on track most of the time
Generally depends on the story and players, but most players will stay relatively on track most of the time if the story gives them the proper flexibility and incentives
alright cool
Hey, are there any campaigns about to be starter
Probably!
But D&D isn't usually a pick-up game. There's setup, establishing expectations, checking characters and the like. That said, looking at the options in #looking-for-community particularly might help - many of those servers do run "quest boards" and impromptu games, just calling for anyone available at the time.
Given enough freedom, players can absolutely get off track very easily. A very common thing DMs often joke about is having to throw away so many plans because the players pull the weirdest decisions and plans for things, though most of it is exaggeration, and not something you need to stress over
Ways to avoid issues is having a clear goal the players are aware of, and communication. You can just say "hey guys I haven't planned anything for if you guys go ahead with your frankly insane plan to assassinate the nice king, and it's gonna throw off the whole story", and be up front with your players
Having the ability to do some improvised stuff is gonna come in useful, and is gonna go a long way to gove your players a feeling of having choise and control in the world, but don't worry about going too far with it

Gotcha, thanks
with character design, are there any limitations on clothes with classes? for example.. could a rogue wear things other than the stereotypical cloak/hood or is that a required thing?
It's pretty much completely up to you what your character looks like. The equipment mostly just defines the stats, flavor is free.
thankyouu <3
Is there a way, other than character class, to get proficiency in constitution checks
I want to go shadow monk but I don't want to go fighter
Checks? Or did you mean saves?
The feat Resilient (Constitution)
Then yes, Nugget is correct. The Resilient Constitution feat is your best bet.
Also lets you ingest some questionable things better
That's a pain
I'm only level 3 so I'm figuring out some cool like
Assasiny shadow monk idrk
Shadow monks are fun
Id actually love to summon my darkness and then shapeshift
Could work with a changeling
What's a changeling
A species. They can change their appearance
Race of shapeshifters
They’re in the newer Eberron book in 2024
Yeah it’s in Ebberon: Forge of the Artificer
Interesting thanks
There's a few different reprints, under legacy rules it's Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse / Eberron: Forge of the Last War.
Under the 2024 rules, it'll be Eberron: Forge of the Artificer.
Ah I meant like shapeshift into animals basically
Like with druid
Since you can keep concentrating after transformation
Main thing is figuring out if you can do normal unarmed strikes when shapeshifted
Any creature can do an Unarmed strike
Ok cool
Um excuse me but I'm new to dnd and I wanted to ask, how do I ask if there are any dms willing to start a campaign
Ohh okayyy thankss
you don't even need arms to do an unarmed strike.
Once you're ready to play, head over to #find-a-game, one of the many LFG discord servers, r/lfg on reddit, or your friendly local game store. If you'd like a printable character sheet, those can be found here.

Roll20 has a looking for group section, and/or if you don't mind spending a bit of money I heard the start playing website has good games
Thanks. I won't pay yet though, just started
no problem, you can totally play and even run games without paying a dime, one of the reasons why I love this hobby
So the push effect from tavern brawler basically makes you immune to opportunity attacks right?
It helps, but not completely, no.
Some monsters wield weapons like whips or have long arms or tentacles. Creatures like this have an increased reach, and can still attempt opportunity attacks from a larger distance.
So it works so long as they have default range, so stuff like goblins because they are the standard 5ft
I'm thinking about going Sailor on my Druid
Since unarmed strikes are kinda par for the course with Druid tmk
It would save you from opportunity attacks on many foes, yes.
As for this statement, I'm not really sure what you're referring to. Druids don't make very many unarmed attacks at all, traditionally.
What's it called when they transform tho?
If you mean while you're Wildshaped, then unfortunately no. A Bear's "Claw" attack or a Wolf's "Bite" attack aren't considered Unarmed Strikes.
Ah so it would be limited to say, an unarmed strike from being multiclassed as a monk
But not the default attacks
Any class can make an Unarmed Strike, but most really probably don't want to do so. Aside from some specific builds, Monk is the only class that has good Unarmed Strikes.
I was originally planning on going shadow monk with druid but I think that's bad
Since apparently a third of the monsters are immune to darkness
I... would highly recommend against multiclassing as a new player.
It's quite easy to accidentally make a very sub par build, unless you know exactly what you're doing and have a specific plan.
Oh, isn't pack tactics kinda op as it just gives you advantage all the time as you can have a familiar next to you
In most cases, multiclassing tends to actually make a character weaker.
I'll be fine because of the campaign but thanks for the concern :)
Is this question related to the previous conversation, or is it unrelated?
It's a druid thing but yeah not directly linked
Pack tactics just says, if you have an ally within 5 ft you get advantage. And like that seems really strong on players
Ah, I see. Yes, the pack tactics ability for creatures like Wolf is nice and useful. It makes up for the Wolf's lack of damage with their Bite, by making it much more likely to hit.
Also I feel like transforming into a haungharassk
Is a bit unfair
Or an Onyx lmao
Both those creatures are a bit notorious, but they're not a species of creature, they're a specific NPC from an adventure, so they're not a valid option for Wildshape.
So basically something like brown bear is best then?
Since it's 2 attacks and you can force prone without a check
That and giant toad because they can't escape tee hee
Most of the beast options have their benefits and downsides. Different situations will favor different options.
The most clutch wild shape I've ever seen was a Cave Badger
Sometimes you just really need to burrow
With 2024, since you have to pick your shapes in advance, I usually recommend taking a couple that would be decent in combat and then some for utility
#character-discussion can give you more suggestions if you want them
It's against server rules to solicit games outside the designated channels
circle's a pretty classic shape. all kinds of utility with that one.
in all seriousness, pick a shape that can breathe in the water
and one that can fly.
It gets around, but I've noticed that it's only good if you're already on a roll
my reasoning about the water breathing wildshape is purely for survival, or potentially to cross some sort of water. flight is a great ability to go over or above some kind of obstacle, or escape. the flight one's not really that big of a need, it just comes in really handy on rare occasions.
Just remember that you need to be a specific level to pick a flying form!
I think this one's spun out.
i forgot about that.
my character can polymorph into a bat. i have yet to do that or really find a use so far. however, my character has almost drowned three times. if you can, pick a wildshape that can breathe water. and possibly air too if you can get the option for both in one form.
Some of that is going to depend on the adventure
true, waterbreathing is less useful in a desert
Both flying and swimming are the kind of things that you only need when you need them, but when you do, you really do
There's a reason all my characters take Feather Fall just in case
i just intimidate the ground into getting out of my way

I feel it is good to start with a race and class. Most parties I’ve experienced tend to be supportive and helpful with people who are new.
Experiences may vary though.
Above is accurate on both counts. I always say just play what ends up feeling comfortable. Try a but of everything. I've ended up almost always playing an ice-based Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer, but I used to live and die as a Paladin.
I usually end up as a barbarian because I am quite chaotic.
So hard finding a dm for a pbp
They're not common, but maybe check out places that specialize in PBP instead?
part of why I love Fathomless Warlock <3
I have a weakness for Tritons personally
here, have permenant water breathing and a swim speed
also cold res if you take it to 6
also, you're literally aquaman at that level
and their spell list is a really good mix of utility and damage
and Tentacle of the Deeps is a really solid key feature
I’m looking to try playing but find a party is pretty tough
Here's the learning the game stuff in case you need it; the links for finding a table are in the second paragraph; I need to add the info for AL though
Read the information in 'Playing the Game'; Then follow allong with 'Creating A Character' using either the dnd beyond character builder or roll20 to make a practice character before heading over to #character-discussion to have it looked over.

if you're dilligent, between here and r/lfg, you can usually find one in like a week or two
New to the game, been a long time coming
is it possible for me as a warlock use pact of tome and pact of blade at the same time? My vision for my character is like a mage assassin, but i read i cant have those two pacts together, even though dnd beyond lets me choose both at the same time
I believe it’s possible in 2024 rules, I don’t know about 2014
I never learnt how warlocks work in 2014…
But good to know now
2024 lets you as long as you spend the invocations for it
thx both

If on PC you can do it using '@time' and then a little command option should pop up, similar to how suggested names pop up. Click that, then fill in the time as appropriate. If not available, then you can use sites like seshify and hammertime to make them.
Hiiiiiii
Evenin’
Good Timezone to you
if i do a reaction, can i still use an action?
Sure, those are separate
yes you can, an easy waay to think of it is, an action is what you do on your turn and a reaction is what you do on someone else's turn.

Welcome let us know if you have any questions
Would starting as a berserker for the first 2 levels then going into being a monk be a good idea for the extra rage damage?
Sounds like a fantastic question for the folks over in #character-discussion
if i use 2 shields one in each hand do i get more ac?
not sure in 5.5e, i'm thinking the answer is no.
i mean, logically it would work. but the rules often have specific things that prevent stupidly stacking stuff
alright, thanks
like, imagine having a shield in both hands, and then a shield mounted on your back. that would grant like +6 AC in theory if the rules allowed. but that's pretty broken.
No, it’s never worked like that
You benefit only from one shield at a time
okay but if i plant one shield in the ground and hide behind it, would that give me partial cover and thus more ac?
a tower shield, sure. that's like a big wooden door granting full cover in one direction. while being used the tower shield has a + something (i think 3?) AC. when planted in the ground like that, the tower shield itself has the same AC and HP as a wooden door.
That would be up to your DM to determine if such a tactic would work
im playing a dwarf so could i do that behind a regular shield?
fair enough i guess
Also tower shields are not an official item
ask your DM. strictly by the rules, no
No
they're not? where did i get that idea from? now i'm really wondering.
Pathfinder has tower shields
doh
They’re a fairly common homebrew alongside buckler shields in my own experience
is there a specific reason for that? does that not give me cover?
likely i'm remembering something from BG2 or Neverwinter Nights
Not Rules as Written
your DM may allow different interpretations of the rules at your specific table. that's up to them. but its not universal.
another question. the rules say i can only benefit from one shield at the time so if someone would use the protection feat on me, benefit me if im already use a shield myself?
i think that's a yes. i may be wrong
The protection feat is a separate feature
got it, thank you everyone who helped
like i think if you had a physical shield equipped, and then somehow cast the spell shield, those would stack. if i interpreted stuff right. that tower shield thing really has me doubting stuff right now.
Yes, shield the spell is also different
You just can't wield two shields at once to raise your AC more
when it says you can only benefit from one shield at a time, it means that your character can only use one physical shield at a time.
Well you can use multiple, but you can only benefit from one, its just extremely impractical to wield two shields
paladin who just wont get hit at all while all the spellcaster fight
It's impractical in d&d because it doesn't actually help you in any way
unless you're Ursa from that Predator cartoon. but that's not 5e rules, that's just awesome.
"does a 22 hit you?" no
also this
i'd rather stack damage resistance and immunity. that helps for saving throw stuff too, not just attacks
although getting hit at higher levels can trigger some nasty stuff from enemies
Having two shields instead of one does not make that more true
i guess but my thing works from level 1
Hence it being impractical because there's zero mechanical reason to do it
And it stops you from using your second hand for anything else
im not saying its the best thing always but if you are losing a battle you can just make yourself invincible
I mean high ac is generally a good thing. But one viscous mockery would go past all that 😭
and that's a reason they don't allow shield stacking
Ratat’s point is equipping two shields doesn’t make you any more invincible
Except you can't, which is what we've been saying
any spell that requires a saving throw just bypasses the shield and any AC.
I had a player once who went all in on AC and then got absolutely manhandled by spells that require saving throw dcs
i thought you were talking theoretically if it could
anyone got some easy characters to play as?
a pre-gen character? there's plenty. for 5e or 5.5e?
I have never said that. You can hold two shields if you really want to, but it does nothing for you
And you'd be limited by hands regardless
Any fighter character is generally super easy to play
uh whats that
a pre-gen character is a ready made character. its been "pre-generated" and ready to go.
The game version you’re playing. 5e/2014 or 5.5e/2024
i thought when you said its impractical you meant even if it worked its not that good. my bad
If it did work it wouldn’t be terribly practical either. AC is only one axis of defense your character has.
Hi all just joind hopefully can find a group

If you feel like you've got a good handle on the Basic Rules, the next set is to find a group! You can follow the link in the bot post above to get your search started on this server.
I been on group finder and table top web page and not had any luck, starting to think I maybe the problem hahah 😅 (I am dyslexic so maybe that is putting people off)
it just generally takes a while to find a group. like an actual job search. you've got scheduling, locations, methods of contact, agreement on what to play, agreement on tone and limits, etc.
so like, there could be the perfect group out there for you. but they play at like 2 AM your time. so that's not really going to work.
Can't say I've ever heard of that being a reason to turn someone down. These things just take time.
It's not unusual for your search to take several days to several weeks to find the right group.
After all, there's at least a 200:1 ratio of players to DMs looking for a game. And I think that might be being generous.
its a matter of timing too. the game you're looking for just might not be up yet.
Anyone know how to type in the find dm channel?

I've played D&D a little and I wanted to get into the online community.
This community is great if you just wanna talk about dnd! If you wanna find a community to play dnd with go to #find-a-game and make post using #looking-for-community
Thank you so much that was very helpful❤️
I'm just curious about the cantrip druidcraft and the limitations of it
It states "You instantly light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire."
I'm curious of how far you can go with this, more of the lighting aspect of this, as a campfire is essentially wood as well as a torch typically, your essentially creating fire from magic but what confused me if you have the power to create fire from a spell druid craft why am I able to do only able to affect wood assorted in certain form and shapes?
The short version is: because the spell says so
Yes I get that
Ime alot of DMs will let you light a set up campfire with it. Tinderbox exists so most DMs don't care too much about that unless it's a specific survival based campaign.
So what’s your question?
RAW I imagine it is a no? Since you're not lighting a candle?? But I have no clue
The limitations of the cantrip are what the cantrip says you can do
I more curious to see if there's a reason stated in the lore or something and not just because the cantrip says so
Yee RAW Its candle only unless otherwise stated. But I'm sure alot of DMs will say yes if you asked.
There's not always a match between lore and mechanics.
^
i think alot of DMs would just treat it as how big of a flame can you light at once and beyond that its just works as a lighter
The “lore” would be that it’s not as powerful as spell mechanically as other flame-generating spells
If you want to light other things on fire, there’s a great cantrip called Produce Flame
Also cantrips are meant to be something you can always do, so it wouldn't make sense for you to be able to instantly create a large fire with a weak spell
create bonfire usually works for me for lighting stuff up
After looking at that spell I now have another question that's a but simpler to answer, produce flame and fire bolt are very similar to each other, but I noticed that in the fire bolt description it state
"A flammable object hit by this spell ignites if it isn’t being worn or carried."
Does this entail that other fire related cantrips that don't include this text or similar won't cause flammable or explosive objects to ignite
Also sorry if I'm being annoying with these question, I'm bored and am hyper analyzing DND spell and want to get other opinions on my thoughts
Spells do what they say they do!
You're not being annoying, this channel is meant for how you're using it
So yes, if that text isn't present, a fire spell wouldn't ignite objects. In the game, rules often determine how things proceed.
RAW only spells that say they ignite flammable objects can ignite flammable objects, otherwise it's the DM's discretion
Thanks for letting me know. I hope you guys have great dayd
Umm I kinda know a bit Abt the game where do I start

check out the basics in the bot. if you have questions after that, hop bck in and ask away
I wanna join a session and I will learn more from there
#find-a-game is what you're looking for then
I understand it may be easier to learn from doing, as that is the way I learn, but I suggest skimming through the basics. Its not too much
I'd be a tad bit careful with that thought process. Learning from doing is always good but since DMs have a big job to do, not ALL DMs are willing to teach basic rules. You MAY be kicked from a table for not know what a D20 test is
Not me. I love teaching ppl but those dms do exist
Ok
I agree which is why I say to skim the basics.
My table doesn't even know the free rules exist on d&db

I am willing to teach, as long as you are willing to put a little work in as well.
Do u mind teaching me
That's fair. I'm too nice. I'd definitely make my next table learn the very basics at least.
Feel free to ask questions in #dnd-rules or even here. I don't have the capacity to teach ATM. Work and full schedule with the Westmarch I dm and my home campaign. Apologies
Plus I don't have nothing crazy all I have is dice and my PC
If you play online you dint even need the dice
Oh wha
Most DMs will allow you to use thier content sharing and there is free dice online
Sweet
Ig ima read the rules rq
Advisable. It'll go a long way trust
Even SAYING you read the rules is a good start. Regardless how well you did or didn't memorize them.
Oh ok
My gf and I have always been interested in dnd, never played. We don’t have PC’s, only Xbox’s and 1 laptop. Can we play online with only consoles?
I'm not sure how well Xbox runs certain websites, so it really depends on the platforms your group decides to use!
I think xbox let's you join discord and you can use your phone to manage your online character sheet. Might struggle when it comes to DMs who use VTTs
Some of our players use their phone only while other players stream for them and move their tokens around.
could use the laptop for the VTT
Can someone explain to me how hitpoints work exactly? I cannot for the life of me understand it
If an enemy has : 103 HIT POINTS and (23d8)
what does that mean?
The 103 is the average of 23d8. You could roll23d8 to discern the creature's HP instead of using the average, resulting in more HP or less!
That makes sense, thanks!
Also, excuse me but is there a good place to pick from for weapons?
One of my players really wants a Scythe, and I didn't find many that fit the vibe I wanted(from his pov) and it really sucks.
Even if it's in other books and such, I am more than happy to look around.
Why not just reflavor an existing weapon?
Scythes don’t exist as a weapon in dnd, but people often use a glaive or smt akin and reflavour that
I can do that, but where can I find those
Those are in the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Weapons
thanks^^

Ello I barely know what it is but it’ll be fun to know about it especially if there’s a healer involved or like a poet!! ^w^
Check out the different D&D classes: https://www.dndbeyond.com/classes
And we have #learn-to-play and the free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024 to help get you started.
Feel free to ask specific questions as you learn/run into things.
Nvm disappointed to see no healer but what roles are healers exactly?
Well Clerics, Druids, and Bards can cast healing spells so no idea why you're disappointed 😉
Ok thx
There's both technically! Cleric is considered to be THE healer class but there's other classes with healing spells. There's also a bard who's the closest thing to a poet? They're the class that fills the role of "ok guys, we need someone to just lie to this guy and make him think that the universe as he knows it, is all a lie"
Life Domain Cleric, Celestial Patron Warlock, Wildfire Druid
Fighter with a healing potion... can heal in a pinch lol
Divine soul sorcerer too... There's alot to name actually
Dang that’s a lot😂
If I'm not mistaken actually, I think ALL classes besides fighter, barbarian and rogue have one way or another to heal others. And fighter can heal themselves with an ability they have
and Spellfire Sorcerer!
The list goes on and on 😅
Yeah please those will do cause it’s quite a lot already aha😅
If you want to be THE healer, pick life domain cleric 🙂↕️
Yes on Life Clerc being the BEST option to be the MOST effective healer
but ye, these are like the three main healing sub classes
Devotion paladin:
So complicated, Hope it's worth it
If anything confuses you feel free to ask
its not so bad if you've got someone to teach you.
I have a question, from my research necromancy seems kinda dead in 5.5? If not, how can I run it? Do I need to follow the 5e ruleset or how would it work
The necromancer subclass hasn’t been reprinted, so I’d run a 5.5 wizard with the 5e necromancer subclass
Reprint is likely coming in sseptember with the Arcana book
Whats the difference between session 0 and session 1 and what does session 0 even do
Session 0 is usually just where the players and DM meet each other and discusswhat the campaign will be about, expectations, goals, do's and dont's
Session 0 is basically stuff liek introducing the players, establishing expecations and rules, and often also making your characters, and doesn't usually have actual gameplay, which usually starts during session 1
Session 1 is where the game begins
So a briefing, got it
i new to dnd and this server where do i find a campaign to join?
Ty
thanks
Kinda. For a one-shot, sure, for a longer game it should ideally be more of a conversation.
If I may ask again, how do I do this in character sheet or tell my player to? He is a bit of a lazy bastard 😭 so If I tell him "you have to cross reference from another sheet" he might explode
you'll have to look at the 2014 phb
It would be the 5.5 wizard with the 5e subclass
If you're doing it by hand, putting it on one sheet is easy enough if you have access to the content
If you're using DDB, you'd have to own both phbs on that website and watch for any funky interactions

Hi
Have proficiency in a poisoner's kit, which will allow you to make basic poison which you can then add to your weapons.
And you'll probably want a martial class for that, to which I'd recommend going Fighter, Ranger or Rogue
Yo
where does one find a group to play with in here?
i looked there the whole explenation stuff just confused me more
You're probably looking for #looking-for-players , if you want to pay to join a game you're looking for #paid-looking-for-game and if it's a community like west marches you'd want #looking-for-community
Sorry, you responded when I was sleeping. I’d just manually note down the necromancer’s mechanics in the character sheet (prolly summarised)
then you can tell him to stick with the options available in the one book.
personally, i do not intermix 5.5e and 5e. at all. and i'm experienced in making and modifying stuff and homebrew and all that. as far as any beginners go, pick 5e or 5.5e and learn that until it really sticks.
mm, I see. I'll try to convince him, he seems dead set on it
I still don’t get how to play

If you have, is there a particular part that’s confusing for you?
I get it a little more, I was confused about stats like stealth, initiative, and other things
start playing, it'll come naturally
ideally start with an in-person game
hey i’m new here, semi new to dnd in general, just curious if most of the #looking-for-players are US times as i’m from Scotland
um no idea just ask the ones ur interested in
Most are US yeah, though Europe is the second most
-# as an Australian, I’m crying
aw nice i’ll definitely have a proper look through them and see if i can find any, thanks
As an American in Japan, I feel you 😭
#rules then #dnd-newcomers then depends if u just wanna chat #dnd-discussion and such or play online here/find a group #find-a-game
I understood that but actually
I didn't understand like how this works
I just registered some minutes ago
ik, saw
It's like I was looking for some mage stuff online
so how discord works? or #learn-to-play
And I saw this school
um u'd need to explain more
check out #learn-to-play and read the basic rules on dndbeyond, or if u brought the books, read that
Btw I am a wizard nice to meet you all
Looks like I need to spend many days in understanding this world but it's sounds interesting

My party will be in a monster hunting challenge. I don't want to simply decide if they killed the most monsters or not, anybody have any good ideas for how to determine if the amount the party kills is a winning amount?
This sounds like it would be better in #dm-discussion
Hello can anyone explain what to do exactly
some more context please, your question is a bit vague

Yep done that

Ooh thanks!!
I just have a question about Owlbear, mainly how it works and if it works on mobile.
Yup, it works for mobile
I have a player who joins with their phone
As for how it works, its a bit like an art program, except collaborative and made for ttrpgs
Since it's free, I would recommend to try it out for a bit.
Though I can give more tips if you're stuck somewhere
I'd like to find a group to watch and learn from if that's possible. I played table top a long time ago 3.5e and recently found out people play remotely on discord
You're looking for the #find-a-game channels, most people are playing 5e or 5.5e so I'd recommend checking out the free rules for 5.5e on ddb if you haven't already
You can find tons of amateur games recorded (and occasionally live) on YouTube and Twitch, which might be easier than finding a group that will allow a spectator!
A simple question but are the DCs for attacks like: you roll a d20 then add whatever the character's stat? So like, if I rolled a 15 and I have 15dex with a standard bow--does it become 18?
Not quite AC is what you compare an attack roll to
DC is how hard it is for you to do/see something, like pick a lock, avoid a trap or spot an enemy
so an attack is a d20 test, you add the d20 to your modifier, so for 15 a +2, and then if you are proficient in the weapon, you add your proficiency bonus (+2 at level 1 for reference) and compare that to the target's AC, which will be like 10 or higher
How do weapon proficiency work exactly? I know you can only use the "abilities" from a weapon only if you're proficient in it, but what else
well to use the "abilities" which i assume you mean weapon masteries, you have to have mastery in a weapon, not just proficiency. proficiency i think is just for if you add your bonus to it
weapon proficiencies mean you can add your proficiency bonus to attack rolls with that weapon
the abilities you're talking about, like Chrono said are probably the mastery property which requires you to be both proficient in the weapon and have the Weapon Mastery feat

Weapon (greatsword, longsword, rapier, scimitar, or shortsword), very rare (requires attunement)
You can take a Bonus Action to toss this magic weapon into the air. When you do so, the weapon begins to hover, flies up to 30 feet, and attacks one creature of your choice within 5 feet of itself. The weapon uses your attack roll and adds your ability modifier to damage rolls.
While the weapon hovers, you can take a Bonus Action to cause it to fly up to 30 feet to another spot within 30 feet of you. As part of the same Bonus Action, you can cause the weapon to attack one creature within 5 feet of the weapon.
After the hovering weapon attacks for the fourth time, it flies back to you and tries to return to your hand. If you have no hand free, the weapon falls to the ground in your space. If the weapon has no unobstructed path to you, it moves as close to you as it can and then falls to the ground. It also ceases to hover if you grasp it or are more than 30 feet away from it.
Do you need proficiency and mastery to use this?
no that is a magic item that can attack on its own, you just have to attune to it and then use the bonus actions to active it
that's what I was curious about^^ the stuff on magic items, anyone can use them? If it doesn't require attuning
if a magic item doesn't require attunement then anyone can use it unless the item has some text that says otherwise. weapon proficiency is only important for adding you proficiency bonus to attacks with weapons
^^ thank you, that's what I was mostly curious about! Appreciate the help 😄

Hello, hi everybody ! I am sorry to bother but i wanted to ask one little thing.
I am making an OC for DnD right now, i am working on her. She is a dwarf. But can she be a kind of dwarf i invented ? I am not sure if it's lore fitting ?
That really depends on your DM. If you use the mechanics of an official species but describe it differently, that's probably okay, but always check!
I don't play yet, i don't k’ow anything about DnD, this is why i asked 😅
Thank you for your answers
Take a look at the species descriptions from the rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#SpeciesDescriptions
As long as you're not changing what they can do/how they work, you're likely fine, but again, it's something to clear with your table once you find one.
Alright, thanks !
my advice is to take the existing dwarf rules but just change the flavour around it
I did. They're really just dwraves. They live and work mostly underground. They are mostly miners too. The only thing i really chanded si that they can have Stones that can grow on certain body parts and they have to carve (it's a job in their society) them a few times during their lives because it keeps growing. (When it firsts start growing, they are babies, so it hurts them just like when they grow teeth)
Hello! I am new in the world of Dungeon & Dragons! Trying to join somewhere where I can learn to play.
I love stories and I write fictional novels in my free time and I think this will give me an opportunity to expend imagination.
Have you read up on the basic rules?
Nice to meet you. I am mrsgaml. I like stories.
Is this a bot?
with the fact that their response doesn't answer my question, I'm inclined to say yes
Are you guys new in the sserver? I am new.
I am a forest nymph. I travel along the plantation.
welcome. let us know if u have questions
This one is probably a 🧌
Thank you. I do have a question. Do you know how to join the game?
This is not a server to join a game in the server. If you are looking for game to join check out the easy to follow steps in this bot

- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).

Are you new to the game or just new to the server? If the latter I strongly recommend reading through the free Basic Rules, linked in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play
I’d also recommend making a practice character as you go along, it helps to reinforce your learning
I am new to the game and new to this server. I just entered the server about 20 minutes ago.
I am building my class right now on the website. I have created a forest nymph from a short fictional story that I have written(The woodsman and the Water Nymph). I will be connecting a novel 102,399 from my word document - unpublished version.
very cool
Very nice. You may find it a little difficult to translate a character 1:1 from a different media (even your own) to D&D. Definitely take a look at the official species, class, and subclass options to see what can make your concept come to life
Also is your backstory the entire 100k word novel? 😅
Yes. I have my character entire family tree from year 1022 to today.
She is a really good person and has been alive for hundreds of years.
Well, there's almost an inverse correlation between backstory length and likelyhood that a DM will be able or willing to integrate it into a given campaign. But if you just like it for yourself since it helps you roleplay, that's can be enough
Okay. That is not entirely true. She did something terrible in her early years, but she was young, and learned a valuable lesson.
is anyone looking for a player to join there campain im new
you're looking for the #find-a-game channels
ok thanks
np
Well, old time player wanting to get back in. Started with 2nd edition and played through the third. Fell off with marriage and kids. Now that’s finished, so I want to play again😂
If you haven't already check out the free rules on ddb
hey me and my group are trying to find a dm were do i go to find one
go to #find-a-game and have a read there, as that's where you'll be able to make a request for a DM
Question.. is community mean free when looking for DM I thought it means others I was confused by that
Community games are D&D servers that may have multiple D&D games being run, westmarch games (no set DM or set group of players), or some type of D&D game that's more than just 1 DM and a set group of players.
They are free if they are advertising in #looking-for-community (but read the details as some may be more of building a community around D&D and not necessarily providing a D&D game per se).
Paid games must be posted in #paid-looking-for-game
Also be wary of any "free" D&D games but they tell you you have to pay for character art - that would be a bait and switch scam.
If they require paid art, they should be up front with that in their advertising.
Gotcha I've only recently been thinking about joining a game so.. I'm a bit hesitant and nervous especially my first time with a DM wasn't the best.. alongside me using d&d beyond and roll 20 I just hope I can find a Dm it's nice
why is it so hard to find a traditional "come together in a party to (later on) fight the big boss and you start out lvl 1 with classes and such
I don't know how to respond to that because I know such games are out there but also know that different groups play different styles of D&D and may not do the level 1-20 and defeat some big evil at the end D&D game
sorry its just confusing on not many starting on lvl 1 and instead start on like 15 20
I'd say most start between 1 and 3 from everything i see
Is this bad
I tried to make a very flawed character
That could overcome his flaws but I got banned
If you don't clear things with your group and you purposefully make things that are problematic and/or break expectations and boundaries of what the group wants to deal with... then yeah, that's bad.
D&D is a collaborative game - you're expected to work well with the other players and the DM to have fun together
is there a way to edit my looking for dm thing?
There is not. General advice is to include any changes or additional information in the provided thread
Which is more common for games
Xp or milestones
Xp for sure. It’s a lot more common from certain skills to general character levels. Milestones are big in RPGs and MMORPG type games, but even then you still have many forms of xp throughout.
Anyone know how to make a character sheet
Your DM will decide what progression system to use. It's hard to get exact statistics but in my experience milestone is more common
They're referring to the D&D progression system, not general gaming. The amount of XP you have doesn't affect your skill bonuses except indirectly via increases in proficiency bonus & ASI levels from leveling up
I'd recommend starting out using the official template:
https://media.dndbeyond.com/compendium-images/br/ph/character-sheet.pdf
As for filling it out, the Basic Rules chapter 1 & 2 lay the foundation for the terminology and mechanics of creating a character:

Hey there. The links above will get you some video guides and the free rules to start off with. Why not give them a glance and then try putting a character together? You'll need to pick a class, species and background to begin.
Please go right ahead and ask if you have any questions!
hey
new dnd person here, i will be the the dungeon master of my group and i'm here to ask for advice
what thing should i look into and or do to be more effective dm i can?
Interesting question. First step, let's pop over to #dm-discussion.
There is no stupid questions
Am I allowed to talk in #looking-for-community
If you'll be running a major enemy/boss, do you state any of their passives/resistances? Or do you just let the players find out.
I know it's best to avoid AC/HP/Stats, but what about the rest?
Ah, no you're supposed to use commands they're listed in #find-a-game
the players should figure it out during the fight, the only time you specifically say is if a player has an ability that lets them know
Well this seems more like a #dm-discussion question although no usually I do not unless players take the time to take the study action or would for some reason know about it
I see, might do it like Esoteric Ebb then, that game has a neat inspecting system
Hi, I'm a complete beginner and I have no clue how to start playing. I think I need to make a character sheet but what exactly is it? And what am I even supposed to do? 😭

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Oh alright thank you so much!
hey everyone
Hello everyone 🤗
Welcome to the server!
So apparently using a single emoji of smiling as a reply is spamming or harassment which sends a reminder and deletes the message? Got it
The server auto-curates emoji-only replies, yeah. You can read up on the server rules in #rules .
Hello everyone! Brand new player from Edmonton (Canada) looking for campaign. I have a character made, half elf rouge (willing to make new to fit into a campaign)
Please someone let me play this game! lol

Don't worry I got got by the same thing 😅
So to put that “single character posts can be considered spamming” rule into perspective imagine you are a blind user that uses text to speech tools to participate here and in the middle of the discussion all of a sudden you get a dndLol with no further context. It can be very disruptive. So please put the emojis/reacts directly on the post you’re reacting to or inline with text so the contextual meaning can be conveyed. Thanks!
Heyo silly question prolly: Do DM's ever require you to have a custom made character art? ANd like, charge you for creating said character for you? Or is this a scam... it feels scammy
