im new to dm can someone help me figure this out?
Are you new to DMing or dnd in general?
yes
why
Well if you're new to dnd I'd recommend you to read the free rules. If you're new to DMing #dm-discussion can help you

i know the basicc rules like combat and mainly interactive rules and how to set npcs
idk what to do after that tho
Maybe try a prewritten one-shot/module, that way you've got a main storyline guide to follow, and you improv where needed rather than having to try improv everything.
?tag ddb claim
The following items on D&D Beyond can be claimed at no cost.
The links above have some free content to help get started with an adventure.
How do i deal with a character with 2 sides(a good side and an evil side)?
First make sure the DM and table are okay with that.
So open communication.
And then decide what boundaries there are to this - is this purely a roleplay aspect or is there mechanical gameplay aspects to this?
But yeah I'd first discuss it with the group and work with them to decide how this character concept can best fit the game and how to best handle this duality of their behavior.
Additionally I’d more rigorously define what makes them have both good and evil aspects. What are their beliefs, habits, actions, etc that would shift them towards each side of the alignment chart?
Ideally you want to avoid stereotyping a “split personality” kind of character where the two sides exist in a binary.
How do i make galeem not binary in personality as the good side is shy while the evil side is a wild animal?
Why have a strict split between an evil and good side? Most people are nuanced and have both good and bad aspects to them; likewise your character should too
As before, try to branch out and better define their beliefs, attitudes, habits, actions, etc that would incline them to be described as either good or evil.
I have a question but I’m scared to ask it cause I don’t know if I’m gonna get a brutal response because it was a dumb question
No such thing as a stupid question
Just ask, please. The suspense is bad for us.
That is also true
What's on your mind?
So I have a homebrew character, and I was just looking to see if someone could give me a second opinion on if something is balanced or not
I’m about to write three paragraphs ;-;
Alright, we could take a glance, sure.
I’ll help too
OK, so I have this ability that passively activates after I get attacked and I adapt to that damage type gaining percentage resistance (I have photographic memory so that DM doesn’t worry about it)
It’s not a stupid question 💖
The only problem is whenever I want this adaptation to activate. I have to know what damage type I was attacked by.
If I get it wrong, I don’t adapt, and I lose the ability to adapt until the next round of combat
so you have to guess?
But with how the story has progressed, I am now infected with the homebrew class the zerg
Yes
If you didn’t want to homebrew Uncanny Dodge is somewhat close, minus the guessing
The dungeon master will always tell you what damage type you take, because players have stuff like resistances
Hmm, yes, I see...
Oh no everybody but me has resistances, and he only tells after I try and make my guess
I have resistances because of the adaptation right now it’s 4% to bludgeoning and 2% to poison
Just about
Okay, so he tells everyone else, but not you? /gen /notsarc
What’s stopping you and your party from just camping out and getting ungodly high resistances to types for you?
No, what happens is if he attacks me, he waits for me to do I guess and then tells everybody what damage type it was
Because it has to be from a bilghted enemy
That’s rather complicated math for dnd, but if it works at your table then it works
I don't like this DM's tactics.
We do not know what that is :(
I personally don’t think that’s something that particularly fits for DnD, but let’s continue
It’s like an undead, but cannot be reanimated by a necromancer
Well, unfortunately this sounds beyond dnd, so I am now unable to help, my apologies
It is OK. I just wanted a second opinion.
Hold up, let me look for the spell
Irrelevant. If you're being bashed, bit or burned the damage type should be obvious and if not, the description should make it plain, not be an excuse to play gotcha with one character while rewarding the rest of the party with important tactical information.
I find often most homebrew isn’t needed, and can easily be covered by rules already in the game
Fair
For this adaptation ability, you could have it be that when you take damage, you can use a reaction to give yourself resistance to the damage type of that attack for 1 minute or until you use this reaction again
Yeah, but this is a one shot and in the very first combat encounter my health did get put to below 2%
(Personally I'd be needling the DM to describe the attack fairly before calling my resist type every time if they weren't open to being open with it)
Oh yeah, the DM describes how the attack happens very deeply because of the adaptation thig
I am not sure as to how that relates to my suggestion
("Are the creature’s teeth long and needle-like, edged but broad or wide and flat, DM?")
I’m glad you guessed that on your first try
And yes that is more or less how we do it
Well, if it works at your table, then it works.
Question, what of attacks with multiple damage types
My opinion shouldn’t matter
I still have my question
But if ur annoyed i can go
I don’t know what a Zerg is, I don’t know how the story has progressed, and I don’t know how this is a question
No no, I’m not annoyed. Apologies if I am coming off as such /gen
I am just a little confused
Very confused
I can dm you the lore if you want
It’s alright, I don’t think I can help
Ok thank you for your time tho
So I just wanna ask, I made my character and everything can I give it custom items a specific sword or is that a DM decision?
How custom is custom, to you? What's special about it?
Basically to make it short the OC is smart and a fighter so... a mechanical energy sword
Generally, here are your options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#Weapons
But some games start with magic items, so it's not necessarily off the table.
That's the thing I wanted to try even though its my first time. The character doesn't use magic. like at all. He doesn't believe in it so. more techy or science stuff.
Alternatively, perhaps if your character has some kind of powers maybe that could do the work for having a special sword.
Then you're in the wrong game, I'm afraid.
not full on, Magic is not real. more like 'Its just energy people can Use' he can use it to some level like a rune or that kind of stuff just not cast spells
I rolled an 18 for one of my stats
would it be better to max it out immediately?
but then when i get feats i can't really benefit from the ones that add to that score, up to 20
or would it be better to not max it, so i can benefit from those feats?
Also, starting with a 20 from rolling an 18 and race bonus, seems like, unrealistic?
so is it better to start at 18 and "work my way up" to 20 by leveling up for feats?
Oh yeah, a common thing. Sure, that works. You'll still be best off using the magic system to provide the game effects.
alternatively can I just, respec the race bonus each time i get a feat?
like if i start with 18 dex and pick +2 dex at the start
then when i get feat at level 4 I change my race bonus to +1+1+1 and get a feat that gives me +1 dex?
or is that not allowed?
This, sure, you're looking ahead and thinking it through. Don't worry about realistic.
The second part about respecs, that doesn't usually work. It's certainly not a default for most tables past the first two or three sessions.
Yes, but I wanted it unique.
When I made him the idea was smart guy with tragic backstory. He invents his things. so can I lean into the idea of a normal starting equipment but along the campaign the materials he gets he creates weapons with them rather than Gain whole weapons like other characters?
Hey where’s best to get started I’ve watched videos and done research on how to play and character and stat customisation and read up on the lores but like whats the bare minimum I need so I’m not wasting tons of money in the shop on rulebooks and stuff
Option one: work it out with your DM. Get the Arcana and tools proficiencies, make some money, find a few weeks spare and make your own magic items. It can be done! It's ruinously expensive.
Option two: go artificer, shortcut the whole deal with mechanical (rules based) backup.
Option the third: flavour your character's advancement in levels and abilities through your "custom weapons". Take battlemaster, say you get the Trip Attack move, explain how you rebuilt your sword with a retractable tripwire device.

If you've got a handle on the rules and terms, have a go at putting a character together for practice. The Basic Rules are linked just above.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
I think Option 2 is my best one, Thanks for the help 👍
if you are grabbing something like war caster to even it into a 20, i would leave it at 19 until lv4
spell save dc is depressing in tier 1 already so save spells are a no-go at that point imo
and attack rolls aren't affected so harshly
Hey is there a dnd campaign that I can just spectate in I’m bored and need information on how to play
Hey where can i find more info about dragonborns? Is because i have a bunch of specific questions and im not sure who to ask
You can find lots of recorded games on YouTube and Twitch. Occasionally you can fid live ones as well.
Thx
The rules give you some info: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Dragonborn
The Forgotten Realms wiki has a bunch of detail (https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Dragonborn), but that applies to one specific setting. We can't say whether or not that information will be true for whatever table you find yourself at.
Ok thanks 👍
Is there any way i can add visuals to Galeem that's not just the basic like frilled lizard frills?
I'm looking for a game to play in order to test Galeem
Elder Scrolls for Argonian, Hero Forge for a tabletop mini look, BG3, or the old classic of robbing some existing art and just tinting their scale colour.
I can make my own art but is hero forge available for Android?
No clue.
Hey folks, new player here (5 sessions in to a beginner session). I had a quick question about a decision I made in the last session and whether it's considered sabotage or feeding too much into a character's personality. I'm playing a half-orc barbarian (atrocious build but it's fine) and our DM had put us in a situation in which I had made the decision to grab a certain weapon. As a player, I knew the consequences would be negative (I ended up possessed while wielding said weapon), but as my half-orc barb (who I decided was very dumb after rolling 8 for both int and wis) decided he wanted a new shiny weapon, ignored all warnings from the party, grabbed the weapon, and then equipped it after succeeding a str check. Is that too 'sabotage-like'? In the end it was fine but it made that combat harder. Maybe this is just a question for my DM but I'd like to get feedback on it.
Hello new player here ☺️
Tried to get a grp of friends to play dnd but they all dipped after character creation so I am here to find a group which allows newcomers :3
Look at it as a learning experience for your character. They went against the party and paid for it. Maybe next time they'll be more trusting of their friends' advice.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Thxeoo kind sir :3
Every group has different thresholds for what's acceptable "what my character would do" behavior. I think that's not just a question for your DM but for your whole table. My plan is generally to ask for the group's green light if a decision I'd make will affect everyone, not just my character.
i’m here for the exact same! Except i have acrually no clue how to play past making a character but i so badly want to join a. campaign
Can someone ask @grim plume to unblock me 🥲 I was going to join a VC in their server to talk about a campaign but I wound up getting sick and when I got back to my phone they had blocked me lol 😭 is impatience a common trait in the D&D community? This is the second time someone couldn’t wait for 1 hour-which is really not that long 🥲🥲

Check out #learn-to-play and the rules linked above! Folks here are generally happy to answer specific questions when they come up. As for finding a group, read through #find-a-game for the info on using the server's Looking For channels.
I just feel like people aren’t giving me much of a chance and being pretty impatient
your awesome thank you!
Sorry that happened to you! As with any large group of people, you're gonna get some great ones and some not-so-great ones. Hopefully you haven't been discouraged from this awesome hobby.
I kind of have if I’m being honest-I was really excited to try and jump back in but so far I’ve gotten 2 people being extremely impatient and pulling their offer over an hour
I feel bad because I can’t just constantly sit on the phone or computer and monitor replies, it feels like that’s going to cost me being able to play
And both times it was genuinely just one hour 😭
I don't think most people expect that. It sounds more like a string of bad luck, to me, anyway!
I hope so. But those are the only people who have reached out so far, too
If you're a player, you'll probably be better served reaching out to DMs. They're in higher demand, so they can (and do) let players come to them, generally.
Good luck!
Should I notify people in advance that I have to just deal with “health issues” sometimes? I hate pulling the ‘pregnancy card’ lmao and it feels weird to bring up unprompted
That's up to you. Personally, I'd appreciate clear communication and transparency.
i hate to ask but can someone give me a broken down for an idiot definition of “homebrew”
Things that fans have made up: rules, species, spells, items, etc.
Just anything outside of the official books, so yeah they may make up enemies or classes & abilities etc.
Basically homebrew to D&D is like mods are to videogames 😛
That’s a great way to put it lmao
Ohhh! So like a homebrew is basically a original campaign rather than following the direct dnd books
Now i just gotta find a campaign 🥲 wish people liked percy jackson enough to do one like that
Now there's a world that constantly needs heroes
While the gods stay home and watch Disney+ I guess...
Presumably a lot of people, thanks to time zones 😛
You can see people online on the right of the screen
Mhm. Noted.
I had some questions about skills
And was wondering where I should ask them?
This is a good place, I think!
Fellow percy jackson fan i cee :3 have u read other series by rick? Like magnus chase, kane chronicles...
No unfortunately 😭 I just started reading the full series and finished all 21 books like a few weeks ago. I was only a fan of the first 3 for a few years until i found out there were more! It’s somerhing i’m really into rn Lol
Niceooo
Btw whts rhe is it an acronym for a series?
Ment the Lol typo
Oww lmfao 🤣🤣
I got rly lost there for a second lmao 😂
How do you roll for a stat spreed?
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
hi
Goood morning afternoon evening
umm now like if i wanna play what should i do i do have little know little abt the game but noow i wanna play it
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Or try local games stores, friends or libraries
Virtual Table Top
Basically a place where you can put maps and the like
is there website or what
There are many
wdym
I use Owlbear Rodeo, but dnd beyond. Roll20, many websites have a virtual tabletop
oh ok but do they need vc
You usually join a vc in smt like discord
oh ok whats better roll20 or owl bear rodeo
Hey is there like a thing where we can join a call and do like a practice session to get used to using the mechanics like I’ve read up on them but be better if someone can explain while I’m doing it
It's mostly a matter of preference
Last I checked roll20 had more bells and whistles but not every group wants those
ok soo um i kinda dont have friends soo

Roll20 is also a lot more glitchy and is unplayable for anyone who has to be on mobile for whatever reason
Guys how do I fill the Features & Traits part of the character sheet??
Like do I write the spells there or something?
You'd put any class features and racial traits there. Like sneak attack for rogue for example
can i ask how long it usually takes to find a game
Like who took the longest to get with a party
you must of had met someone like that no?
Typically I’d say it takes a few days for the average person. It may take longer depending on your availability and game preferences
So for a sorcerer it would be like Spellcasting, Sorcerous Origin, Font of Magic and all those??
OK thanks
Yup, and then your actual spells would go on the spells page
Pretty much yeah 🙂↕️ whatever class features you get, you put there
Also if I'm a dragonborn do I also write the Breath Weapon?
Correct because that is a feature and trait given to you by your species
OK 👍 thanks a lot
That HIGHLY depends on how strict you are in what you are looking for and even more importantly your availability. Also if you are under 18 (I do not need to know if you are, this is just a statement) it will be MUCH harder, especially here. I know you have been advised multiple times on what to do here and other places to look. So unfortunately patience is a MUST.
hiii i’m completely new to d&d and idk where to start. my friends helped me make a character and a character sheet on dndbeyond but im unsure what else to do
or how to even play

Is one of your friends running a game? That'd be a great place to start if so!
well i’m unsure, he said we would be later next month. but i don’t want to wait that long to play, yknow?
Patience is important with D&D. It's unfortunately not something like a video game that you can just pick up whenever you feel like it. Let him know you're excited and ask if there's any game or one-shot sessions he knows of that you could get in on. You can also look through #looking-for-players to see if there's a beginner-friendly one-shot available to apply for, but that's a bit of a long shot.
omg tysm!! i really appreciate this help a lot, our time zones are slightly different and him and i both have work and stuff. plus we only have one other person who would play, she also has a different time zone
i’ll look into it tho ty!!
I should probably look into that as well. A campaign I was in just got dropped and I'm sad about that. And as a result, another that I was dming for I postponed. Dming feels like a lot of work lately.
(It's more than just that I swear, I'm not a deadbeat dm and I plan on resuming that campaign when I feel better)
Breaks are important! DMing burnout is a real thing. It's a lot of work. People advertise new games in #looking-for-players all the time if playing online is something you're interested in ❤️
Plus, this server is far from the only place to look for games.
Hey there, I'm new to d&d I've been trying to understand the character sheet and what to fill out and what not I see a lot of videos and explanation but it just doesn't stick (I'm slow). And is the sheet supposed to be changeable? so it's better filled with pencils?
Some things are changeable. Like your HP, spell slots, or uses of abilities. But most things don't change. Using D&D Beyond or a form-fillable sheet and printing it out is perfectly normal. You'll need to reprint it when you level up, but not every session. You can also handwrite, there's nothing wrong with that and it is what I usually do.
Is there a specific part you are stuck on?
Oh i see good to know. Well more like I'm stuck in every part other than the name 😅.
Well I used D&D Beyond but after filling everything up and exporting it as a pdf I only get blank sheet with just the titles. Is that how it works I thought it would put in all info that I filled😅
It should, unless you did something incorrectly. Go back and make sure you've selected everything. Open every drop down menu, sometimes they hide things that you need to select like languages or gear.
Oooh OK thank you I'll see to it hopefully I will do it correctly this time thanks a lot!
Yo uhm idk if all the campaigns are currently full but if one is open can I please join in sorta new and haven’t been able to play for a long while
hello i want to make a game from my friends dose anyone have any good started videos to help me start of as a dm?
search on youtube how to be a dm and you shall find that one vidio with blue haired girl
Thank u I’ll check em out😁
lmk if its helping!

i have got the basics of the game and am looking to become a dm!!!! all the dms in the chat, tips? tricks? thoughts?
I'd start by reading the basics of DMing in the rules here:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/the-basics
It has great tips and advice
And like Omegon said, Colvilles playlist is great
i dont like her puns
its mostly self depricating and feel forced
Hello, why did it say the server changed my nickname?
idk now to change my UN in the website and I had it for 5 years
If you have questions about server rules or a moderation, you can go to #moderator-support and ask for a private thread. But usually user nicknames are changed to comply with server rules and most often they are changed because they contain non-standard characters, fonts, or symbols which make it hard to read/understand and thus do not comply with the server rules.
is charger and speedy feat a good combo?
Good question for #character-discussion or #optimization but yes they can provide useful features for combat
Hey everyone
hmm some people feel it that way
Hey everyone :D is there anyone that is willing to help me with my character creation? I am new to dnd so i kinda have no idea how to make a reborn dragonborn necromancer/wizard correctly
Folks in #character-discussion can help give feedback and advice
Thank you!
Generally though you can follow the 2nd chapter of the free basic rules as it explains how to create a character step by step
Free basic rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Thank you sm, i will look into it :)
why he gotta be a dragon born tho?
i'd imagine he would be a human
hard to imagine dragonborn as anything but fighters
please dont judge others options
every people has a different imagination than yours
Dragonborn are sterotypically Paladins or Sorcerers, but that's irrelevant as the whole point of character creation is you get to choose how your character is built
every race can be every class they want
what would you lot say the bare minimum of knowledge is before running a campaign for the first time? i have all the books i can refer to but would like to aim for being smooth too
also i forgot where i say it what do you use for rolling dice and stuff like that when playing with friends online? can i find that in the faq

Give #learn-to-play and the first two sections of the rules (linked above) a read. Try making a character. That should be enough for a start!
How do I create a character?
It's all in the rules! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
Go to the Basic Rules, above. Pick a class, species and background. Come back and let us know what you decided.
What do you mean?
well I have to write alot, think a tun, prob hurt my brain and hands, theres just alot
It can be a lot, but you don't have to do it all at once. Eating an elephant happens one bite at a time.
???
Doing a big thing is always done bit by bit.
Hello Everybody, Im pretty new (only played homebrew a few times). Ive decided to try out getting into some actual campaign gameplay. Always wanted to get into DnD but never had anybody to play and just got a PC. Building a character right now on beyond and wanted to know some of the basics as far as what is the general rule of thumb for creating characters? I see some optional things when i start the building process so i want to know if i should take things like legacy off? typical advancement type (milestone or XP)? Should i just build it and can edit these when i find a campaign or should i build him as a base/test character and make a real one when i find a campaign?
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok
english? in a shorter sentence please
Forget D&D Beyond for the moment. Hit the Basic Rules linked above. Start with class, species and background. Use the Standard Array for ability scores. Then just make your picks to fill in the blanks.
Ditto Smith. Also, any character you make now without a table is for practice. Which is valuable! But the point is to engage in the process, not to have a perfect character by the end.
Can people please help me create my character, I've asked, Ai, youtube and google and my brain hurts more
I got like 40+ tabs open already
2nd chapter of the free rules is step by step instructions
I think Mr Smith's advice is sound: look at the rules and pick a class, species, and background.
ZM, check here: #dnd-newcomers message
I don't see it
The rules are here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
My brain hurts more, sorry
I'm really new to D&D
There's no rush! Take your time. Breathe and focus.
Class, species, background. Each has a section. Have a look over, pick what sounds fun.
well I like Batmans Background/origin, human, class Fighter/ God?
How about this. Do you have any ideas as to what kind of character you want to play? Specialties, personality, likes, dislikes, abilities, etc?
well batmans intelligence, the flash, spiderman, thor, abilities, personality of Spiderman, ben 10, dislikes Evil, gagdets the omnitrix, power ranger morphers etc
And I'm serious (deadly)
D&D is a game of imagination, but the options it includes don't work for every sort of idea, unfortunately!
I'd recommend toning it down a bit as that's alot, although stuff like batmans intelligence/Wisdom couple with spiderman and thor abilities could somewhat work as an elemental monk, although I wouldn't recommend playing monk as a first character
so wrong server?
D&D is one tabletop role-playing game among many, where you use imagination and rules to tell a story with friends. D&D specializes in heroic fantasy, so if that's what you like, you'll enjoy it.
I like action movies, and guns, sword violence
No, though other ttrpgs might offer options closer to what you're looking for. That's a very super hero-y vibe, rather than a magical medieval fantasy which D&D does best
so I'm in the wrong server then?
The kind of fantasy D&D does well hasn't been super common in media lately, but the likes of Frieren and Delicious in Dungeon are close to the vibe.
You could emulate powers of thor, with lighting magic and stuff, or flavor your druid wild shaping into animals as Ben10 ability, but usually it'll still have to fit into the table and the theme of the game, which again in most cases leans heavily towards fantasy, not so much modern or superheroes
If you're looking for games that are more modern superheroes or action movies, then D&D isn't the right fit probably.
If what you're looking for is playing as a super hero / modern action game, you might be able to find a game where someone is doing that, though it's pretty rare, so it's gonna be difficult, and might not really make use of actual D&D rules. Otherwise yeah you might have better luck looking into other tabletop systems
You haven't wasted anyone's time, we're here to help when we can
I know i want to be a Paladin my only character i created and played was a paladin dwarf. Looking into it more i saw aasimar are a species that are kinda like angels? Thought it would be cool but i dont see any info on them. Just google them or is there a better resource to look more into it even though i dont think beyond will allow me to create one without buying the handbook.
How are Dragonborn subraces called? For example my character has a Black Dragon Ancestry, so he would be called a Black Dragonborn??
Or something like that?
Aasimar have celestial lineage, which is angel-adjacent, yes. And they aren't part of the free rules.
Yep!
Sounds Good i will look more into it just debating if i want to get the handbook or not but it seems if im playing online it would probably be worth it so i have all the info
Or you get creative. Ebonscale, for instance.
The usual advice is to use the free rules and test the game out to see if you really do like it. If so, then the books would be a good investment.
Yea, that's exactly how people refer to dragonborn subraces, the physical indicator of that is usually scale colour
i love DnD always have but was also more heavily into video games because i never knew anybody into it besides my brother that didnt let me play because i was too young. Now its just about finding the right group for my schedule or adjusting my schedule with for a group to the best of my ability. I appreciate the advice ill buy the Handbook so i have full access.
Actually that's a pretty clever name
Ill use it thanks 👍
As someone planning to really dive deep into the hobby are there any other essentials for online play?
first time even ever looking into playing online i know roll20 for rolls maps and such and beyond for character sheet?
Honestly, it just depends on what your needs are—like there are maps, music packs, VTTs, and more you can buy. The core books are a good first get, but I've gotten so much mileage out of legit free materials I haven't needed to plunk down much money.
Just the core books! Don't think you HAVE to buy them. The free rules + online resources is enough. I am new as well and have made very good use of the core books. DMG, PHB and MM(all 2024). If you can afford the books, I recommend them but again. Not mandatory especially if money is tight.
I prefer Owlbear Rodeo for maps: it's free and more lightweight compared to Roll20, but that's what works for me and my table. People use all different platforms depending on how they play.
I 2nd that. So far I've used d&db vtt and it's fine for new player but I have dabbled with owlbear and plan on making a full switch soon for my group
Sounds amazing i truly appreciate all the advice i tend to dive deep into whatever i set my mind to so im ready to pull the trigger on everything. Ill start with just the handbook and work my way from there as i continue playing. Thank you all so much.
Where do i go for finding a dm ?
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Out of like 30 different campaigns I requested to join over the past month, I got accepted in 1 pbp server. I give up🫠
Genuinely my advice is just chill here and be likeable. I personally got invited to two games and I didn’t even apply to any, just chilled here and interacted with the community.
Granted I may be the anomaly
Alternatively you can try DM’ing
Dming sounds like a nightmare. Plus I was trying to be as friendly as I can but I either (mostly) get ignored or rejected
Don't take it too personally! I think I came off bad to a couple people and definitely felt ignored but I kept talking and being as friendly and as helpful as I can be and now I think at least 1 or 2 people like me. Just keep trying!
DMing isn’t that bad, especially if you run a module. As for you getting ignored or rejected, it’s hard to leave a positive impression in such short amount of time
It does take some time for the players to warm up to the DM and for the other way around too
Also the ratio of players wanting in games, especially free game’s, to the amount of total DMs is probably 1,000 to 1 and that’s probably being generous
Is there anyone here who knows dnd lore really well? I'm tryna cook up a background for my character but its hard without knowing all the lore shenanigans
Its fun making characters (that I will probably never use...)
The folks at #dnd-lore are the experts there, though the lore of a character depends on the setting

There isn't really a set objective as each adventure is unique but to generalise more often than not it's a group of adventurers attempting to achieve success in some heroic deed against all odds.
But to learn details the bot message above is your friend, it has references and details
So its like a RPG adventure where everything can happen?
I like it, i need to learn about it
That is correct
Hello world!
I am brand-spanking new to d&d. I am looking for some help and I have some specific questions about character development for my first game coming up in a few weeks. I will be playing with 3 friends and a hired dm that I met at a public event. We will be playing with the Heros of the Borderlands starter set that I got.
I have questions about backstreet and whether the sub class that I want to play is compatible with the adventure I have. I dont want to clog up the channel so if anyone comes across this post who is knowledgeable and would like to help me, feel free to hit me up in the dms.
Thanks!
You can ask here and if it is more relevant in #character-discussion we can me there
Can move there*
Hey I made a post looking for I DM how do I know when someone says someone to me?
You will get a ping most likely and you can always occasionally check your personal thread that was created for your post
I see. Okay thanks also how long is a typical wait
Not to sure myself. But the more patient the better
Can I get a guesstament?
Hours to months
^
MONTHS?
Putting together a group can take some time to align schedules and get the campaign all organized
I was just looking for something to do this week 😭🤟
You can also look through #looking-for-players and #looking-for-community for available games to join
I want my first character to be a rogue halfling. I found some reading material about halfling subclasses and Ghostwise looks super fun to me. I saw that those characters are described as coming from specific places after being displaced in a specific war and I dont know if that storyline matches up with the game I have
Rogue halfling is very standard but fun! No clue what Ghostwise is though.
Ghostwise is a subspecies of Halfling originally published in the Sword Coast’s Adventurer’s Guide
*subspecies, sorry
Oh interesting. If it's from Sword Coast then I imagine your DM will likely allow it. Not always of course but I myself wouldn't say know to a subspecies from the forgotten realms.
Why am I getting like a billion friends request?
That specific subspecies is from the 2014 version of 5e, so you’ll need to do a small amount of conversion to make it 2024 5.5e compatible
You're hansome
YAY
It’s also specifically from the forgotten realms setting, but your adventure is set in the forgotten realms so you should be ok unless your DM says otherwise
Be careful. Check the pinned messages in #moderator-support on ways to handle unsolicited friend requests/direct messages because there's a lot of scammers out there
Oh HotB IS forgotten realms? I did not know that and I ran it
I wouldn't recommend accepting unsolicited friend requests
Okay thanks I'll just wait until I get something on my post
Gtg bye guys
8:00 is my schedule
That sounds complicated. Do you know of any website or tool that I can plug the info to thatbwill do a conversion for me?
It's like, ignore the racial ability score modifiers, right?
It’s not super complicated. The main thing is that 2014 species gave ability score increases, which in 2024 was standardized moved to backgrounds
Halfling is slightly more complicated since they don't have subspecies anymore
So basically if a 2014 species gave you ability score increases you just ignore it
But it's not that hard to take away the feature that used to be Lightfoot and add the ghost wise feature instead
Lol. That is super complicated for someone who feels like that sentence was written in Elvish 🤣
Oh, sweet. Thanks!
So I can read about all of the places they are from and the history and it will all be applicable?
Like lore for halflings or the info on their mechanics?
Well the lore for Ghostwise is different, right?
Different than other Halflings, I mean
Mechanically their info will be in the book Sword Coast’s Adventurer’s Guide, which should also cover a small bit of lore on their species.
If you wanted a slightly more in-depth read on their history, the forgotten realms wiki is a good place to look:
https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Ghostwise_halfling
You're awesome, thanks!

Hello guys

Welcome
Hi how can i do my character sheet and character in general?
This should help https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character
thx
Are you making a sheet online or in person?
online
Try using dnd beyond’s character creator with the above guide for guidance
If you run into any specific issues feel free to come back and ask questions
ok also do i need to firstly find an party and dungeon master first before making it?
It’s good to make one for practice, just don’t fully expect to be able to use them
k thx
thank u so much
I learned my lesson to never attack trees.
First time I attacked a tree was 2 months ago when I started DND, I died. Now this time my cleric gave me the idea to hit a tree, and when she somehow missed when rolling to hit, I used produce flame and struck the tree. Turns out it was a tree blight, and we are levels 1-3.
what is a tree blight
Newcomer to DnD, and was wondering if it would be possible to create a swordsman character with a mechanic similar to Marth's "tipper" in Super Smash Bros. I was thinking high intelligence and dexterity, fighting super defensively until a weak point is found, and then hitting the "tipper" to deal massive damage
is it possible to hit an eldrich blast back at an enemy

Hi all, just joined the server and still fairly new to the game
I've never played DND in my life
As like an attack of opportunity? Yes, but you need the war caster feat.
Welcome all!
the what
war caster feat. It's in the Player's Handbook, it's a pretty useful feat of spellcasters in general.
You'd have to pick it up at 4th level though
i take it that's only for the classes that cast spells
Yeah every class gets feats at 4th level but only classes that cast spells would want to take the war caster feat.
i think i got great weapon mastery at 4th level
hello
Hello
Howdy 👋
Hey
Welcome!
Hi
Hello!
im intrested in his imagination of his character, how do you call that judging?
damn... should of let it go
I don't know if I am sending this message to the right chat, but I am new here so I was thinking of leaving my comfort zone and share my questions instead of browsing alone. So, how anyone joins a free/paid dnd campaign online?
I used the only charisma I've got, please be kind with me 🙏🥹 Thank you!
Thanks 👍
I would start by checking out #find-a-game. Just be aware that finding a proper group can take quite some time. Patience is key.
you sound restricting id say
It's fun to imagine unlikely combos such as orc sorcerers, minotaur wizards or firbolg barbarians.
Nice, thanks for the advice! 💖
This is what I was trying to do but I was not aware if this was the proper way. And I don't want to do any hilarious mistakes due to my instincts.
Oh dang fr?
I was tryna read back what he said to see what u mean
Im a little lost tho
Whats restricting about what he asked?
Genuinely confuzzled

Hello
Hi
In the 2014 rules dragonborn are popular among fighters and paladins because of their racial ability score improvements to Strength and Charisma. Same as tieflings often being bards and warlocks.
That's not to say that's all these species are good at, but when starting out, there's often a strong drive to try and get a 16 in your primary ability. A dragonborn wizard might feel like the Strength increase is a waste - how often will they be called on for a Strength check?
Personally I prefer the 2024 implementation.
Howdy. What's on your mind today?
Howdy!
Even that can be solved with tashas which lets you swap racial stats
Good point!
Could i have some step by step help on how to make a character, im new to this and dnd beyond isn't as helpful as a person who knows what they're doing
Check out chapter 2 from the free basic rules - it goes over how to create a character step by step
Free basic rules can be found here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
Feel free to ask specific questions on any of the steps or anything you're not sure about
would you recommend filling out an online sheet or a physical one?
Having it digital can be helpful in the "you can always have it with you" with a digital device but doing it by paper and pencil may help reinforce the character creation process better depending on how you learn best.
ok, I'll just do it digitally
I started my first dnd game recently I noticed that for things that often change (like HP) are pretty annoying to do on the character sheet cuz it gets damaged after a few erases and rewrites. So how do I deal with that ?
(excuse my English if I made any mistakes it's not my native language)
You can use a digital character sheet, that way you don't have to write and erase. Or if you wanna use a seperate program like a calculator to track your health, if you wanna use a paper character sheet
Okay tysm
Some people just write HP on a separate sheet or dry erase board too
Can I send my sheet here?
It may be better to head over to #character-discussion for that
Hey yall, I've never played dnd and joined this server cause my fyp keeps throwing dnd content at me so much that I've thought up of a preety fun gimmicky character, but idk if i should acctually try to find me a party cause i've heard it's gotten woke as heck with like safe signs and stuff so im not entirely sure
Not sure where the woke aspect comes from. If you want to play feel free to start with the basics in the next Bot

I've heard things about like safe signs and potential triggers and stuff like that being encouraged in the actual rulebook. Mainly some vids knocking on dnd and saying its not as fun anymore cause of those weird additions. Mainly babylon bee's vid though, but dnd does genuinely sound fun, so i reckon i should probably try it :))
Give it a whirl, I'd bet you will love it
Oh ye!
I did do that
He was askin why a sorcerer cuz usually dragonborns are fighters
So he was tryna see what idea they had in mind cuz he couldn't think of how itd work
Thats why I was confused by wut u mean when you called him restricting or judging or somth
hello guys! any idea where i can find a one-shot? im rly intrested in playing dnd but rly busy with school and things and i jst dont know where to start
Check Find a Game
tysm!
hey is it possible to play a game without a mic?
Yes there are play by post/text games
Or do must people not do it?
?tag new online
it is far more common to use a mic but play by posts are common too
Many online games use voice, some even use Virtual Table Tops (VTTs) to show maps and character/monster tokens. But there are D&D games that use just text sent via Discord or other system (forums or even text applications) to run a game.
How long usually sessions are?
that can vary heavily but i would say 3 hours is relatively normal
Thx
thank you

Hello, this may be a more advanced question, but I still feel relatively new. How do opportunity attacks work if the player themselves are not retreating? For example, for telekinetic feat, I can move someone. Would it prompt an opportunity attack if I use it in combat on someone engaged in melee?
Forced movement does not prompt an opportunity attack unless specified otherwise by a feature or involves the enemy using their own movement
What does "involves the enemy using their own movement" mean?
For example, the fear spell causes the enemy to be forced to run away. Because this involves their movement speed and isn’t them being pushed, even though they are forced to move away they still get hit by an opportunity attack
In contrast, telekinetic forcefully moves them by pushing them, but doesn’t involve using their movement and would not cause an opportunity attack
You can think of it as “if they’re running away, they’re using their own movement”. If it’s instead them being manipulated forcefully from something else, then it’s probably not gonna create OA’z
Dissonant Whispers is another example. If they fail the save, they have to use their full movement to run away in a straight line from the one who cast the spell. Uses their own movement, even if technically forced
Oh I think I got it. Thank you!
which doesn't make much sense to me
so i usually use the house rules of as long as they move within reach and out it could trigger an opportunity atk
Personally I’m happy with how it is. Means you can yeet allies out of danger
just got a nat 20 on my first ever death saving throw
The rules make sense to me. AoO is an abstraction of a player leaving his guard down to flee thus giving an opponent an opportunity to get in another attack. Yeeting an opponent out of range shouldn't work the same way. Plus there's a balance issue to take into account. It would be too easy to abuse the shit out of forced movement combined with attacks of opportunity.

Hi
Hello, I want to check if I understand saving throws correctly. So let's say I cast a spell and the opponent needs to make a INT saving throw. On my character sheet, it says 14 Save DC. The opponent needs to roll higher than 14 in order to successfully resist the spell, and they can add their INT modifier to their roll to help them. No matter what ability, the number they have to roll against is 14. Yes?
Also, where does the number for Save DC come from? Can I boost it up?
14 or higher
All things that have a DC will have an explanation for how it is calculated, if this is coming from spellcasting it will be written in your spellcasting feature.
I.e for wizards they use intelligence as their spell casting modifier and bards use charisma whilst clerics use wisdom etc.
Most spell casting saves are calculated using the following:
8+proficiency bonus+spellcasting modifier
You can increase this with magic items etc.
So it is the opponent adding Their INT saving throwing throw modifier to their roll right?
So if someone makes a (insert score type here) saving throw, they use the modifier of the same type plus proficiency if they have it

ello im a newbie in a campaign full of newbies and i have zero idea how to build my character properly or make a sheet
i attempted using dnd beyond but they do not have tabaxis and i dont wanna spend money
You have a a certain class or race you wanna use?
My character is meant to be a Tabaxi Bard/Rogue (mainly bard)
One sec
A recommendation I have you don’t have to do this if you wanna be mainly a bard but I feel a mainly rogue would be a lot better for a tabaxi
Since they can climb on walls and have sneak attack
Though bard is good also because they have a plus in charisma
twas making them a bard as part of their lore, i also jsut think bards are fun
thank ya tho
A main thing im confused about is how to make the character sheet and where to put stuff for example class features, species stuffs etc
Hello! Looking to recruit player for a DnD game. Just trying to get access to the looking for players channel. Looking through everything to figure it out now but if anybody could help me that would be great. Haha. 🙃
Type/looking-for-players to make a post, and/or go to #looking-for-dm and reply to posts
THANK YOU so much!
No problemo, it’s a common question
Omg that helps the overwhelming anxiety I've felt so far.
It's in the Find a Game channel! I'm so dumb haha
No need to be stressed. Unless you’re rude, mean, inconsiderate, break the rules or like durian I won’t hate you (jk in the last part)
Yup! If you got any more question feel free to ask here. Btw i recommend you don’t ask in multiple channels
Sorry 😒
But thank you so much for the help. 🙂
Hey man!
I saw this yesterday and was just as curious as the last guy
Dragon borns are typically fighters
So why a magic user?
Did u have a cool concept in mind or were u just testing things out as a dnd newcomer
In the base 2014 rules, you get a few more dragonborn fighters because of the Strength bonus.
Then Tasha's Cauldron of Everything added the concept of "floating racials", as in, everyone gets a 2 and a 1 to put anywhere.
In 2024 the rules updated again and now those starting increases are paired with backgrounds rather species. As mentioned (#dnd-newcomers message) any species can be any class.
Ah I see now
Thanks man!
I knew any species can be any class
I just couldn't think of what cool backstory or combat style would fit dragonborn
Hence why I was seeing what his thought process was
I GOT INTO A SERVER THATS PREPPING FOR A CAMPAIGN
it happened I found a DM
But they are starting level 5 which is intimidating, in an ideal world i'd start with level 1 so that I have time to get used to how the game works without that many stuff to keep track of
Let the DM know your new, but do some reading/watch some videos and get comfortable with what your character can do specifically.
I’m planning on doing a complete home brew campaign and I’ve never been the DM so anyone got tips on how to write a campaign
Start small, expand out. Focus on the parts that actually matter for the players, and don’t put too much time into something out of the scope of the game. And make it digestible.
The campaign is gonna be a zombie apocalypse type thingy so I’m trying to think of how I can make it a campaign and how to make it long and enjoyable
I mean, how do you win in a zombie apocalypse
Survival is the most obvious, but it’s not always too fulfilling
I was speaking with one of the potential players and we came up with smth to where your trying to either find the cure or another idea was there is smth controlling the zombies so killing it kills the zombies
Finding a cure is great and all, but without a way to mass produce it or distribute it it’s just a second chance or a good bargaining tool
I’ve still gotta think of smth for that
May I also suggest using #dm-discussion ?
I’d second that
Oh I didn’t even know that was a channel
This channel is specifically for new to D&D folks to get help with learning the core game rules and mechanics

Hi I’m new
Howdy!
New to RPGs, or D&D in particular?
Hi, I'm new to d&d but am a heavy veteran in pf2e and have experience with pf1e/bg3 I had a few questions I was hoping to get some help with?
Fire away!
I see on d&d beyond there's a bunch of types of books but as I read some seem 3rd party and others don't is there anyway to tell what's standardly allowed across all tables so I don't start by buying the wrong types of books I won't be able to use immediately?
I would say you can't go wrong with the Player's Handbook, being the core of the game. Outside of that, it's impossible to say what's accepted across all tables. People will restrict even official materials for various reasons.
Hmm 🤔, perhaps more commonly accepted content then?
Since the 5.5/2024 edition is relatively new, there's not much official content out there yet. If we're talking 5e/2014, that's another story,
What's the difference between the 2 besides being new?
Small quality of life adjustments for player options. The bulk of the rules are the same. (I haven't dived into it, so I'm not savvy to all the differences.)
Ah so more like a light remaster then, guessing if u learn 5.5 it's safe for using in regular 5e then?
You can use 5e stuff in 5.5, but not vice versa. If you learn 5.5, you can definitely learn 5e, but they do have enough small but important differences that it's worth being specific which you're referencing at any given time.
I see so would it be better to learn 5e or 5.5 first?
A lot of folks recommend 5.5. I trust their judgment, even if I've been enjoying 5e and don't feel like learning the new parts just now.
The core is the same, roll a d20 and add a number or two, but specific parts do vary.
Alright thank you that definitely helps, my next question is what app is best for new people getting into it. I know d&d beyond is the official default. But, are there others that are regularly used because they might be cheaper, or more beginner friendly?
Different tables use different tools, and none I've heard of touts itself as particularly suited for beginners.
D&D. I’ve played RPGS in video games but tabletops and community driven games i have no experience
Fair enough. What's a good way to get started and play around a little before jumping into a campaign like adventure paths for Pathfinder Society?
Give the rules (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024) a read, make a character or two whether on D&D Beyond or using a PDF. Not sure what else you're looking for specifically, but if you can provide more details, we can better help.
More of is there an organized play group for meeting people to play small single sessions instead of full campaigns
Sure, there's Adventurers League. We have a whole section of the server dedicated to it (see #channel-guide).
2014 monks, are they proficient in long swords? I read something about a dedicated monk weapon but I’m not sure if that’s 2024
Thank you. You've been very helpful
Not base, no. They're proficient in simple and martial weapons with the Light property.
Simple weapons and shortswords.

Good luck and happy adventuring!
Cheers 🎉
ok thanks, thats what i inferred but couldnt find if long sword counted last night
thanks
Here's an idea i had for a dnd campaign: it's an isekai but the players are dnd characters and a cavalry runs over them without knowing and then the isekai part is literally just the super mario universe and they have to stop fawful and reclusa while bowser is a secondary antagonist so does this work?
You'll probably feel a bit of friction trying to mash Mario and D&D together, but if you're willing to do the work, it could happen!
Specially if it's a literal isekai but dnd characters in the mario universe and morality not mattering as much as usual
"How much XP for the goomba?"
Hello^^
My dm is making a ww1 steampunk campaign homebrew.
And I need to make a character without dnd beyond thingy. Can anyone guide me and help me?
If you can't use D&D Beyond not sure how much help we can be as it sounds like your DM is moving heavily away from D&D but do you have specific questions?
I'm totally new to this so I have no idea what to do. Dm told me to look foe advice from pros
How much official content are you using?
Like-
He is making classes for us. And weapons and skills.
But background and character make is like still up to me
And races is still five basic ones
Ask something like "Hey, my DM is making a homebrew steampunk WW1 campaign and I need to create a character without D&D Beyond, anyone willing to help and teach me?" and show them all the things I will send once Im done with them like classes, weapons, new skills etc
( that is his exact word)
Again it sounds like it is heavil not D&D as there are way more than 5 races and if he is making up things, we wont be able to help as we are not in his mind lol
Huh??
True. But he means like humans, dwarfs. Elfs. Dragon people and the other one.
ok thats fine, but if it is not D&D based, this may not be the place to get your answers
have you read the basics yet? maybe you can get answers from that

Your DM is using heavy homebrew, im just seeing how far they are going. Custom classes for everyone is already pretty far removed from regular 5e. If the only thing similar is some of the species in the Basic Rules (since there’s even more than 5 in the free content), then it’s going to be difficult to give useful advice
Yes I read the basics
I think. But I'm not sure on how to make my character yet. Like not on technicality. But like choosing something.
Ok again, if all he is using is a fraction of the races that many game systems use, but is making up the rest, he is not playing D&D, but a homebrew game in which case without having his rulebook or his brain in a fancy golden jar, we cannot help much unless you ask specific questions that may be answrable as if it was D&D
Hmmm...okay then how about this? I want to create a character. I will choose a class later but for now any advice on character creation?
Start with your class and race
This is actually a good example. In 5e species has little to no impact on class and vice versa. The typical advice is to pick whatever species you’d find fun to play as. But we don’t know your DM’s custom classes, so that advice may not be true. For example, if a class is species locked or gives preferential bonuses to certain species
Alrighty
For race I chose an elf. And I chatted with my dm so I'm getting a spy/rouge class kinda thing with some shadow magic. Or at least something similar. I like rouges.
What else?
10
You need your background, and then your backstory
Well, the latter is technically optional
Try to arrange for 16 in your primary ability, like Strength for a melee fighter or Dexterity for a ranged one, and don't put your Constitution below 10.
Okay.
Are they not same thing? Background and backstory?
But you should collaborate with your DM on that
No your background is a mechanical choice and component of your character
I see I see
That's good notes. Thanks.
Your backstory is a narrative component
Huh...
Oh! Right. For skill professioncy I can have up to 4? Including background?
Its part of the Basic Rules, Chapter 2 which covers character creation
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#OriginComponents
Tell them that not all classes will be custom (some only renamed) and that it's still at development level, I haven't finished everything, as a matter of fact I finished very little. Starting equipment will be made too, and adjusting things for character creation
(That's what boss said.)
Your starting proficiencies depend on your class, species, and background
"I had a fine life as a pickpocket and petty thief until one day my luck ran out. The judge offered me hard labour or the draft, so here I am. Still not sure I made the right choice..."
Your background gives 2, your species may give some, and your class will usually give at least 2
Yes. So can I choose slight if hands and stealth if I had an acolyte background?
Nope, as per the Basic Rules the Acolyte background gives proficiency in Insight and Religion:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-origins#Acolyte
Where can I send a pic?
Where are you making your sheet? Pics aren’t allowed in this channel but you can upload your sheet to a trusted file sharing site like Google Drive and send the share link to that
Oohhhhhh
Thank you so much.
So can I be a criminal...impersonating a priest?
Oh yeah! I need a sheet too. I have no idea how to make that
Also no. My dm sent me a message and I wanted to show that.
That is also the entirety of Chapter 2 of the Basic Rules 😅
The basic rules in the bot I sent before had a section on character creation. you should try to go through that and then when you are stumped on something specific see how your DM wants to handle it as it seems they are very comunicative
That could be your backstory yeah. Your background is a mechanical choice. It’s normally intended to represent the most impactful skills you’ve gained from your life before adventuring
Sorryyyyyyyyyyy
Like I'm honest lost. I'm just so excited to play this so I dunno what I'm doing 😭
Hmmm...then I do have a question. Since I will be choosing a rouge like class.
What professioncy should I choose? Slight of hand and stealth sure. For a third I was leaning for arcana for a little magic. What about fourth? Is that any good too?
Perception is always good if you can take it
Huh. 🤔
That is...honestly good advise as we would be using ww1 weapons
Okay! I will read that character creation more throughly now and ask when I'm confused
Thanks a bunch staroflight san and mitcho chano San and Mr Smith san
Huh...
Guys can I use dnd beyond character sheet to track my progress? Like, I want my Character to be elf. So in the sheet I write elf and class I choose let's say sharp shooter.
Like can I do that? Or are there only paladin and fighter classes?
The dnd Character creation adviced to use it
If your DM is setting things up, they may share the custom content for the game.
Without that you may be best off using the form-fillable PDF. It'll mean completing the details yourself, but at least it'll be neat.
Form fillable pdf? Like a blank sheet made for dnd that I can fill myself?
Yes.
Where can I find that?
here
Huh. Mr Smith. My dm was said I can make a dnd beyond sheet to track my levels and progress and spell slots.
But won't it be a problem for his custom weapons? I said can't I write your weapons there? Now we are both wondering that
THANK YOU!
you can try your hand at the DnD beyond homebrew tools, but be warned they are not very easy or intuitive to use
Is your DM new as well? Maybe he should come in here and talk in the DM channels to get some advice. To answer your question, you can customize weapons on D&D Beyon to read how you want or even homebrew them, but that is more advanced
but even customizing takes a little experience
Thankssssss
Ima tell him
Wait how do I give him link to this???
to this server? you can get the invite link up top
Or tap the three dots on your DM's profile and select "Invite to server."
Done!
He is my dm
My only dm
(Psssst. He gets jealous if I say I have other dms.)
I am new (I had one campaign before) , and I will ask for help whenever I do need help with it, for now Im feeling really confident in my abilities
-# Don't all dms?
How did you make your text dark and small?:0
Do -# before your text
#like this
I encourage all of my players to have multiple DMs if they are into playing many games a week
...sad
No "-#" this
Yeah I know it's just a joke that I dislike it
Quick question, if I as a player purchases the player handbook and Xandurs guide to everything, would I be able to share that content with my DM and other characters? Or would I have to purchase the book for my DM??
You can share as long as you or the DM (or others in the campaign) pay for master tier (assuming you are asking for D&D Beyond)
-#banananaa lalalala
I am, sweet thank you
You gotta put a space after the -#
- #this is Hella confusing
In the campaign, you or someone has to activate Content Sharing, then All books that everyone has in that campaign are shared (unless someone goes and manually turns off what they are willing to share)
-banana? Apple?#
Copy this -# Lalala
This is not meant to be a general chat channel. this is for new folks to ask questions.
-# I know dark magic muahahahahahaha
Oh yeah! Thanks guys for helping me out
Thank you so much! Me and a group just reached level 3 and we were like why isn’t there any content like starry druid, wild magic sorc, etc… so just double checking before I get it. Thank you!
No Problem!!! Good Luck
On the character sheet's bio section what am I supposed to write on the Treasure part??
That's for loot you find on your adventure. You don't start with anything there.
OK thanks 👍
Is it the same with the Allies and Organizations? Should I leave it blank?
For now yes but your DM may allow you to start with some if it makes sense for their game
what's the stance on Dragonborn's using the Breath outside of combat to interact with the environment?
Example being fire/lighting to light up an area/trigger an explosion
Up to the DM, really
But you are using a limited resource to do so, so generally I could see a DM letting things work when it makes sense and/or is a clever use of it 😛
Actually that was my main concern, that the breath is unlimited
So far at the table I have used it a handful of times and I have been spacing it out,.but I dont see anything limiting me from just spamming it. Did I miss anything that specifies a cooldown period?
The breath weapon feature should mention a number of uses it has, recharging after a long rest I believe
PHB: "After using your breath weapon, you cannot use it again until you complete a short or long rest."
Fizban's: "You can use your Breath Weapon a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest."
Ok these are great to know,.I'll discuss it with my DM thank you!
This does also nullify my freshly-acquired water bottles to try and toss them at foes before lighting-breathing them but that's not too bad
There also isn't an official rule for anything being weaker to lightning due to being wet, so that's also gonna be entirely up to the DM 😉

thankk youuu
Depends on the DM, but I would say you need to spend a lot of money procuring the right inks and papers for it.
joining an in person group in my area soon
I think there’s a subreddit for that, idr what it’s called though.
Have fun!
I’ve just been looking for them to use lol
Can’t find any ones that aren’t very get pixelated
Yes, that's typically how spell scrolls are made, Xanathar's guide should have info on it, at least to my knowledge
i have two character concepts one is a goth-daddy edgelord and the other is well greg what should i choose
Flip a coin?
#dnd-maps , battlemaps on Reddit, or the Internet generally. Try setting your search to large images only and make sure you're not saving the preview images.
Here are the rules for that: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#ScribingSpellScrolls
Did my first longish one shot last night. Used an artificer and was able to build a mini backstory. I got some terrible rolls but had a lot of fun. I’m hooked and want to know how to be able to make a post in looking for players. I would like to be able to post my schedule, experience and such how do I go about that?
Check out #find-a-game
It has the instructions youre looking for
Ah thank you appreciate you so much
Hello, I'm trying to figure out where/why I have Disadvantage on my character sheet. It says I have Disadvantage on STR and DEX when not proficient with armor worn under Saving Throws. I have leather armor and a shield, and I'm proficient in Light Armor
Shield counts as armor. Are you proficient with those?
No... How can I get more proficiencies? Shield isn't an option for now
Moderately Armored -Feat is probably the easiest way to gain a shield proficiency. Other is Multiclassing into a class that gets it, but not exactly something to recommend for a newcomer, just for a shield
Thanks. Does it mean shields are completely out of the picture for me (warlock)? Or it just comes with leveling up?
Pretty much out of the picture until level 4 and if you take the feat then, unless you're a Hexblade (Which I assume you're not since you would have the proficency already if you were)
Proficiencies usually don't just come from leveling up in most cases
Oh. Thank you very much for the explanation. I thought having a shield would be an easy way to up my AC, but I guess I just need to focus on remaining far away
For the Warlock consider Armor of Agathys.
And Hellish Rebuke. Make them pay for hitting you.
Fiendish Vigor at Lev 2 to get False Life.
My favorite map-makers who offer stuff for free are Dyson Logos, 2-Minute Tabletop, Neutral Party, Dr. Mapzo, Angela Maps, and Reddit (r/dndmaps and r/battlemaps). Give those a Google and grab whatever will fit your needs!

Is there a way to dual wield 2handed weapons or anything that makes it so you can consistently wield oversized weapons?
You can just flavor your 1h weapons and just say "I'm wielding two giant swords" my player is flavoring one of his weapons as a chain sword from 40k
Ah but no actual way to wield 2 actual greatswords then?
Nope. A 2 handed weapon requires two hands to use, and no feature removes that requirement
Ah then I merely need 4 hands!
Only option for that is the Thri-Kreen, but sadly even then they are not able to dual wield 2 handed weapons, as their extra hands have limits
Dang
I'm not familiar yet with how attacking with multiple weapons works in general but how would a thri kreen attacking turn look if it had a 2h and 2 agile weapons?
Hey everyone, I’m really new to DnD and practically don’t know anything I’m going to download the app is there anything else I should use or know before starting?
What app are you downloading? There is technically a D&D Beyond app, but it doesn't have all the functions of the website.
I personally would suggest that. Are you going to create a practice character? That's a good way to start. You should read the step by step guide in the basic rules while you do it so you understand what you're doing.
Ok thanks I’ll start by doing that
Let us know if you've got any questions!
Ok thank you i really appreciate it
You don't actually get any extra attacks by wielding multiple weapons, they're just an option to attack with when making attacks. The only exception to this is two-weapon fighting with light weapons, which let you make an additional attack as a bonus action
Ah
I decided to use the quick builder to make something well quick is that what you meant by step by step guide?
There's a Basic Rules link here, which goes through character creation step by step.
Ok thank you I’ll read all the rules in depth
Hey guys i’m brand new to this i wanna start a campaign with my friends via discord whats the best way and any tips
I'm new as well and recently made my oc Shad, idea of look in hero forge tab lol. But I honestly wouldn't know but would love to get into DnD
Hi I'm zay I just made a character on DND beyond but I have no experience in DND except for a half attempt at the 360 game and I'm wondering what I should do to play online
If anybody could help that would be amazing 😭
I don't know anybody who plays but I've always wanted to try
#find-a-game has info on how to find an online game via this server. You can also try reddit, dnd beyond forums or roll 20 forums to name a few
Forums?
D&D Beyond has forums and some include play by post games and general recruitment for games
Wha
Do you need new player help? 🙂
how should i dm as a new player? i have already decided on creating my own campaign
I think being open and honest is important. Being open to feedback from players but also capable of being firm when needed (recognize this is hard). Having fun definitely!
Keep in mind being a new DM and making your own campaign is like playing DMing on hard difficulty. That's not to say don't do it, but it's not the easiest way to start.
My main tip is to keep the scope small. Prep the next session and nothing else so that you can change things as you go and get better. Also, don't be afraid to look up rules or ask your players to take 5 while you rearrange your prep if they do something unexpected.
What are basic things I should first get as a new player as a ranger?
Like first learn?
Wdym “get”
Like gear?
Like things to basically get into the game in general
I already made my character on DND beyond
Sorry that was worded confusing
Learn spellcasting, how combat works, ability checks and modifiers
Oh and send a link to your character sheet here so it can be reviewed
How do I do that? I used the app
If you go to manage character near the bottom there should hopefully be something
Hi, yes I come new
Same
im new to dnd if any groups wanna invite me to play with them im a 24 M
#find-a-game if you want to find a game on this server

I have a server where I host stuff like this :)

Yes
yeah theres #looking-for-players and #looking-for-dm, #find-a-game has instructions on how to use them
Thanks
-# more like a TTrpg.
-# but
hi
Hi guys I'm new do u guys know some things to learn or need to know abt cleric
im also new to this and im trying to learn how to play as a wizard
Both of yall should go read up on spellcasting
how do i find the spell casting stuff?
No tag spells found in category new.
thanks
What sucks is while I'm looking through the posts for #looking-for-players, all of em seem to be taking place when I'd be asleep since I work full time night shift lol. That's seriously gonna make it harder for me I feel
Ain't that a mood

Adding to what the other person posted
Most classes have spells that u should probably get in them
For wizard this is mage armor and sheild
Is Armor of Shadows worth taking as a Lvl 3 warlock?
its +1 AC vs studded leather, so not essential but its not bad
It’s decent. If your game doesn’t make use of cover very often or the dm targets casters a lot, it’s more useful. If you can make use of cover often or don’t often find yourself the target of attack, there’s probably better things.

Does anyone know if there's people who play dnd with discord but where you dont have to use vc? im fairly new to dnd, i played it with my friends for around a year but we havent had a session in ages because one of them moved to canada but would really like to play. I dont really like using vc though due to being a minor and i have quite a bad stutter
I think PBP(Play By Post) is the gametyle you may be asking about? Idk any details though.
What you're after is play-by-post games (https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1668-play-by-post-playing-dungeons-dragons-in-pbp). In short, text-based games. Many are done asynchronously (not in real-time), but occasionalyl you can find those. They're just quite rare so far as I know!
Funny enough I was invited to one in #find-a-game but declined since I was looking for vtt vc games.
Oh okay yeah, thank you, will keep a look out for those
If you make a #find-a-game post you can specify you want PBP games!
You can also check out places that specialize in PBP play like the D&D Beyond forums, Role Gate, Gamers Plane, RPG Crossing, and Reddit’s r/pbp.
Other options include Myth Weavers, No Goblins Allowed, Ongoing Worlds, RolePlay onLine, Roleplayer Guild, Tavern Keeper, and The Tangled Web.
Dang! That's what I call a resource. Go razor wing!!!
Okay yeah, thank you, ill probably do that later on
Will those games still be done through discord or is it done just on those platforms?
Varies, I think. I know some of those sites have Discords, so do some searching.
Okay yeah, Thank you for your help
Guys on the characters sheet bio section what goes on the additional features and traits??
Any additional mechanical features or traits your character might have that aren't already listed. Don't worry if it's empty.
Is there any way of doing dnd with friends via discord? And what’s the best way to go about it?

And feel free to ask specific questions as you run into things
Also see #learn-to-play
i already created a charcter i just need to know how the character sheet works like what does everything do and all that
Well if you have a specific question then we can provide specific answers - but you need to be a bit more specific
?tag new sheet
Character Sheet
To keep track of important information about your character, you need a character sheet, whether it’s a printed character sheet, a digital character sheet, or plain paper. Choose whichever style of sheet works for you, and then embark on creating a character! Chapter 2 of the Free Rules walks you through the steps of character creation.
If you're struggling with the myriad character choices available, premade characters are a great way to streamline character creation and get playing. All you have to do is browse through the available paper or digital options to see which is most appealing.
Your character sheet helps you know your character stats (ability scores, saving throws, modifiers, proficiency bonuses, what skills you're proficient in, what attacks/weapons/spells you have, your hit points, your armor class, your initiative score, your inventory, your class features, your background features...)
That is optional but in some D&D games and campaigns, that is used to indicate which god/gods your character follows
ohh
It has no mechanical impact except where your DM makes it have such impact
Alignment is a shorthand way to help you understand how your character might view and act
are you good or evil or neutral. are u chaotic or lawful
Here's the alignment section from the free rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#Step4ChooseanAlignment
That said, don't feel like your character must always behave that way - again this is more of a shorthand prompt on how you could roleplay your character.
Some D&D games may lean more heavily into using alignment in a mechanical way but many do not.
chaotic good
now
there ya go lol
how does someone that is dragonborn have skin
Skin = scales
so like red or smt
It's just a way of indicating the coloration of their skin/scales/hide/fur
that section is just they way to describe the way you look and the way u act/think in VERY general terms
also same with hair
again just generic terms to help u flesh out yer character
yea but what would i put
what color hair or none or bald or spiked
is yer hair spike, parted, bald, do u have cool lizardy looking spikes
a frill look goofy tbh lol
But you can describe anyway you want (as long as it's just flavor and has no mechanical impact)
prob lizardy lookin spikes
i think
ok cool.
Make sure to read the server rules
You can use a reputable image/file hosting service and share a link to an image that way.
Liek Google Drive
Do most people here use a voice when speaking for their character?
Not necessary but many players do modulate their voice to refelct tehir character
like full on accent, voice acting? probably not the majority.
slight variants in expression and pitch? probably many
btw found out how to send it
ok lemme send it now
this is what he looks like :3
Thanks I am trying to create a voice, though it's been 2 sessions, out of a planned 50-ish. I think it's okay to just drop a new accent anyway, eh?
Can you make it a publicly shareable link?
I think it's perfectly fine to feel out your character for a while, including how they sound/speak.
idk how 3:
Yep! Nice!
yayy ^^
also note server rules regarding no AI-generated work so make sure to source your art ethically and cite the artist and link back to them per server rules
now what kinda hair does he have
But looks good
ok
They have lizard-like spikes and a frill
ok
agreed
I had Copilot create character art based on my character sheet. It actually did a pretty good job. I understand the AI restriction but it is useful at times esp if you know how to prompt it well. I would guess very few people who play D&D are skilled artists
Otherwise my art would be a stick figure smiling, near a house with the sun in the upper right corner, as it should be
now... skin color?
and a bird that is a dot and 2 arcs
reds and silvers
Whatever color you want - based on the picture I'd say redish-hued scales.
ok
(there is no wrong answer here - this has no mechanical impact on the game)
is red-orange good?
Sure
perfect
congrats!
yayy
now
