does anybody have a campaign i can join, i just started playing and id like to get some experience
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:

Follow the easy steps in the bot to look for a game and or post what u are looking for
I'm not am experienced player or anything but it seems good you picked good stats and good skills. As long as you like him he is cool imo
Thanks
Spells are overwhelming I don't know what's good since I don't know their use cases and if they are the most effective at said cases
So I just picked what sounded strong and would be used a lot
Poison spray
Hellish rebuke
Hex
Are these good for a warlock who uses pact of the blade lvl 1
You’re missing your origin feat from your background, which is the main thing that’s missing.
Other than that I suggest swapping your background ASIs from +1 Con/+1 Wis/+1 Cha to +2 Str/+1 Con. The reason is that you’re currently boosting your Wis and Cha scores when the boost doesn’t increase their ability modifiers (e.g. 10 Wis and 11 Wis both give a +0 Wis modifier)
don't get poison spray, get smt else
OK, thanks a ton!
this is a common problem as some of the descriptions a re misleading, check out smt like rpgbot for a, although not always reliable, guide on building ur first character
How do I select a feat?
for warlock very important take eldritch blast as a cantrip
choose one from the list
In DND Beyond. I do not see the prompt
Armor of Agathys is nice
Especially starting out I wouldn’t worry too much about choosing the “most effective option.” Just go with what sounds fun and completes your character concept.
Of course, like any other caster, Warlock has a few staple spells you might want to strongly consider before choosing something else. Primarily the cantrip Eldritch Blast.
Thankfully Warlock is somewhat noncommittal to its choices. If you feel a cantrip, spell, or invocation you’ve chosen isn’t working out as you thought it would, you can change them out whenever you gain a Warlock level as per your Pact Magic feature
Is there anyone teaching new comers how to actually play dnd. I know the basoc fundamentals just dont have anyone to play with.
If you’d like to use this server to find a group check out the instructions in #find-a-game !
for those, i suggest finding a local dnd group
Which background did you take?
Uh-huh. Yeah... nobody around my area is taking in fresh meat with little to no experience...
Criminal
"Fresh meat" like damn
Make sure you’ve chosen the 2024 5.5e version of the Criminal background first. If it is the correct version and it isn’t applying the relevant feat (Alert) then I would ask about the issue in #ddb-support since that would mean the site isn’t working correctly; then in the meantime you can manually add it on the final sheet if you go to your character’s feats tab.
OK, thank you
Sadly that's how it be in this area. Nobody actually seems to care about the story or lore it's all about money to them. And honestly if I want to pay someone to teach me I'd rather go to college.
Dude you read the rules no? Then what you are lacking must be some gaps
well i guess #find-a-game then
It should be easy to fill with the help of these guys
i don't recommend paid dnd
Paid sessions aren’t for everyone, I agree. There’s pros and cons to doing paid vs free games
The wide majority of online ones are free though. If a game isn’t explicitly advertised as newbie friendly it’d always worth it to ask!
I swapped poison spray for eldritch blast and for my second cantrip I got true strike cause it sounds cool
im gonna bench the warlock character since it obviously stopped resembelling the main inspiration a long time ago
i need help with this idea of a barbarian
i thought of it while being absent minded
he is a barabrian from an infamous clan of brutes and savages (WHOM dont kill women nor children or do raids at night) and the biggest honour for any barbarian is to die in battle right?
and then one day a sage or mystic traveller is passes by their clan and he predicts the future of some men in the clan
and "olaf"s future is that he will die in his Sleep
DUN DUN DUN....
i havent fleshed it out yet so it seems forced but i will and it will be great eventually
so olaf beleives that this is true and he would rather be tortured for a thousand years than die a "weakling's death"
SOOOO he goes out to adventure with the first party he sees and he almost is suicidal with his fighting and he fears sleeping at night and he would go days without sleep just to "delay the prophecy" or maybe disprove it
ITS SO BRILLIANT
Seems like you got a great concept cooking! I’d just be careful about the part where you want to intentionally not sleep, since that has mechanical consequences
hello
Howdy! What's on your mind?
does anyone wanna teach me how to play i want to be able to play
So what questions have you got so far?
So your proficiency bonus is a flat number that goes up as you level. It's the same for all classes and can be found on your class table.
At low level it'll be +2 . You add 2 to any roll your character is proficient in. Follow so far?
Your saving throws use the same modifiers as your ability scores. Your character class will also give you two that your proficiency bonus applies to.
A fighter, for instance, is proficient in Strength and Constitution saves.
Say they had Strength 16, that's +3. They also add proficiency so when they make a Strength save they roll the d20 and add 5.
oh
hi chat is my level one sorcerer's armour class 10?
If your Dexterity modifier is 0 and you have no armour, yes.
And sorcerers have no armour training, so you can strike that out.
Most sorcerers invest in Dexterity for this reason. The mage armour and shield spells can help.
Technically yes but you can't cast spells if you wear it + get debuffed
You need the correct armor proficiency to avoid penalties
It's not a good idea, no.
If you wear Light, Medium, or Heavy armor and lack training with it, you have Disadvantage on any D20 Test that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can’t cast spells.
Here's good.

Alright, rogue dwarf, standard gear, masteries fit, proficiencies picked. That part is all fine.
Ability scores look to be on the high side. The typical advice is to use the Standard Array or Point-Buy method to begin with.
i used point buy
Not the usual way, considering the chart only goes to 15 before adjustments: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#AbilityScorePointCosts
Here’s some things that I noticed:
- Your stats are either rolled or manually set. Your array is not possible with Point Buy. I’d suggest switching to Standard Array or Point Buy for now unless you have a DM that has seen you roll that array. Rolling is almost always done under DM supervision to prevent cheating.
- You seem to have extra gold from somewhere.
- You seem to have chosen the 2014 version of the Criminal Background. Make sure to switch to the 2024 version which will give you an Origin feat. If you plan on playing the 2014 version of the game, then switch your species and class over to the 2014 versions.
- Along with 1 & 3, it seems you have not chosen which stats to set for your background ASIs
can I cast age armor out of combat?
Yes you can
Pretty much anything you can do in combat you can do out of combat unless there’s a specific explicit trigger or condition that would only activate in combat.
It is 8 hours so just throw it on at the start of a day
in the components section of that spell, there's verbal, somatic, and material. But it doesn't list which material you need
so like you don't need to worry about the casting time of 1 action?
In DND beyond it's usually at the bottom of the spell next to a little asterix
my dex is 20 because of my class i think
Rogue provides no ability score increases at level 1
Your dex should be at 17 tops after bonuses unless you rolled
i dont know im sorry
No not really. Casting time will still matter broadly “when it matters.” That is to say how long a spell takes to cast outside of combat will matter depending on the situation since the time scale isn’t as structured. Taking 6 seconds to cast a spell at the beginning of the day will probably be hand-waived. Casting a spell with a 10-minute duration may matter depending on the circumstances of when/where you’re casting (e.g. probably handwaived if it’s in a relatively trivial situation)
In the character builder, go to the ability scores tab and see if you accidentally added extra modifiers onto the stats
Your stats still seem too high, Point Buy only allows a maximum of 15 in a stat before background ASI’s so you’re getting extra points somehow
o i forgot some
Speaking of which, you don’t seem to have set which stats will receive the background ASIs based on your background
The array is still off, you have an 18 in Dexterity somehow before choosing your background ASIs
15 point buy +3 for dwarf
The dwarf species does not give a +3 to an ability score
In the old 2014 5e rules, Dwarves gave a +2 to Constitution and another +2 to a stat dependent on subrace. However in 2024 5.5e species no longer give ability score improvements. Those have been moved to backgrounds where you get your choice of +2 & +1 to two different stats or a +1 to three different stats. The stats you can increase are dependent on the background that you chose. This will probably help to review:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/creating-a-character#AdjustAbilityScores
Speaking of which, you are still using the 2014 version of the Criminal Background (and also you still have the extra gold for some reason)
What link are you trying to send? Outside of D&DBeyond links, new users need to wait 30 minutes after joining to post links, as the bot keeps saying.
i sent u the link
I see the issue. You are accidentally applying the +2 and +1 to the same stat, which you cannot do. D&DBeyond allows it in its character builder for some reason but it’s not allowed by the rules
I would review the link I sent above, which overviews how background ASIs are assigned.
so do i take off 1 and change the 1 to a different stat
Yes one of the other stats you can apply the +1 to as dictated by your background
hello
i dont know anything about dnd's gameplay, does anyone have a tutorial for me to follow?
hi im new to
would u wanna learn or play together
@pine snow would u wanna learn or play together im new 2
Have yall ever gotten powergamer/minmaxer allegations for playing a class, subclass, using a spell, feat, etc. for character/roleplay/flavour reasons?
Stats look fine now, though I strongly recommend swapping your Strength and Constitution scores. It’s a bad idea to have Con as your “dump” stat.
After that, it still seems like you have extra gold from some unknown source and you still have the 2014 version of the Criminal Background. You’ll need to remove the extra gold and update your background to the 2024 5.5e version so you can get your Origin Feat
Welcome! The best place to learn is with the Basic Rules, linked both here in this channel’s pins as well as in #learn-to-play . I recommend reading through as much of the first 2 chapters as you can; the more you can learn yourself the easier it is to get into a group. Of course feel free to make a practice character as you go along and ask any questions you have here.
As an additional tip, #learn-to-play has a small “demo” linked towards the beginning that can give you a small taste of what the actual game is like.
Those terms tend to get thrown around a lot without a lot of hard definitions. I wouldn’t worry about it unless the accuser was trying to insult you, in which case you should have an above-table discussion with them &/or the DM about their behavior.
the gold came from my friend
Not sure what you mean by that
Gold doesn’t transfer between campaigns, especially not campaigns between different DMs
You only start with the gold given by your class & background (more if you take the gold option instead of the equipment option for both)
Also it seems you removed the background ASIs
the what
The ability score increases granted by your background
ooh, alright, thanks!
You swapped back to the 2014 version of the Criminal Background and still have the extra gold
Wait nevermind the link messed up for a sec
The sheet looks fine now, though again I strongly recommend swapping your Str & Con scores. Rogue doesn’t get a lot of use out of high Strength and no character likes having low Constitution
Yeah for a Rogue 8 Str & 15 Con is way better than 15 Str & 8 Con
what does the letter c at the end of the spell name mean
That is usually a marker that the spell requires concentration
Basically you can only concentrate on one spell that requires concentration at a time. Concentration doesn’t require you to do anything to maintain it but certain things can make you drop concentration, which will instantly end the spell you’re concentrating on. Some things include:
- Failing a concentration check, usually as a result of taking damage
- Dropping it willingly (can do this anytime for free)
- Casting another spell that requires concentration
- Being subject to an effect that would force you to drop concentration (e.g. Unconscious)
Concentration. Can be maintained over a period of time, but taking damage (or certain other effects) can disrupt it. Only one concentration spell can be maintained at a time
Here’s the Basic Rules link on Concentration:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/rules-glossary#Concentration
Everything is fine except for the stats again. You seem to have an extra point allocated somewhere
Either in Constitution or Charisma
But, your stats are distributed well. Primary stat highest, then con. Int is actually very useful for rogues, for scouting purposes, you'll need investigation, and stuff like arcana, religion, history etc
between chromatic orb and disguise self, what should I choose for the second spell of the two level one spells my character know?
Mage Armor unless you have some other armor proficiency
i added 1 to dex because i updated the class remember
What's your first spell? Is this for a feat, an early level of full caster, a half caster, etc?
What's your class?
That would make your array impossible then since that would mean you had a 16 Dex before adding the +1
For example, you shouldn't take mage armour on a class that already wears armour
because i have plus 2 dex
Hey Quick Question
Is Chromatic Orb and Disguise Self goodFirst Level Spell Ideas for a Sorcerer?
Do not take chromatic orb. Too unpredictable and requires a material component with cost. things like magic missile are better
Hmm, What is an alternative then?
Also, are you playing 2014 or 2024? In 2024 ritual spells can be casted by any caster who has it prepared.
I have Fire bolt and Ray of Frost
-# 2014 Sorcerer
Mage armour
You cannot stack the +1 and +2 as before, I highly suggest looking at the link I sent earlier. Even if you double-stacked Dex against the rules, your Con would be too high since again as per Point Buy rules you cannot buy a stat higher than 15
15+2= 17
increase your ac to 13+dex mod
Why did you say you added an additional +1 dex then?
Oh, so 14?
-# Wait no 15
-# Improvement from 13
"+ 1 Force damage" what does this mean
i dont know its confusing
Shield or silvery barbs are also very useful
With the Normal Dmg, It adds 1 Force Dmg
Deals an extra 1 Force dmg
Even still, back to what I said originally, either your Con or your Cha would be too high. As before, the best array you can do that matches what you have is 8/15/14/14/8/12. With the Criminal background and putting the +2 into Dex your only options are a 8/17/15/14/8/12 or a 8/17/14/14/8/13.
Roll d4. each missile deals the d4 damage, plus 1 more force (raw magic) damage. 3 missiles means each missile does 1d4 plus 1 force damage, x3 missiles
Magic Missile does not make 3 separate rolls
It is a unique spell in that the damage is rolled once to determine the damage each missile deals.
Oh I didn't know that lol. Sorry 🥲
remember its +1 and +2
Well, that is the case for the 2014 rule when you target multiple people. You do in fact roll individually in 2024, or when targeting only one creature in 2014.
least overcomplicated RAW
what do i fill in the class features box for my level 1 sorcerer
Magic missile is amazing because it always hits unless a spell blocks it.
No saving throws, no attack rolls
In practice, the DM decides
All the features listed on the sorcerer's class table for level 1.
Again yes, that is what the two arrays I provided are. You cannot get 16 Con, since you cannot get 15 Con with how you have your array. You apply the +2 Dex and then the +1 to either Con or Cha, as per the rules
no point buy give u 27 points
I suggest reviewing the rules on Point Buy. It is not simply 27 points you have to distribute to your stats. It is a pool of points you have to “purchase” certain stat values.
i know
just calculated it its right
nevermind i am so so sorry
when i updated the class i updated the dex but not con
Alright looks good now!
again i am so so sorry
so am i reeady to play
Sorry, my games are private and don’t have open slots. If you’d like to use this server to find a group to play with the instructions on how to do so are found in #find-a-game as skyblade said

Good news, you don't have to buy anything! But the Player's Handbook and a set of polyhedral dice would usually be the first purchases. Are you going to be playing in person or online?
I thought I would play with my cousins, so I'll mostly play offline
but don't u have to buy that board the dungeon master usually has??
One PHB and a set of math rocks will do you fine.
If you want to use a board, you can. Search up battlemaps and print them out, use tokens stuck to pennies.
I c
Ohhh ok 👍
thank you so much ✨
The "standard size" is one inch or 25mm to a grid square. Also it's a good idea to number your monsters. Makes it easier to tell which zombie is which when they're all represented by a dead man's face.
👍 👍 what about character sheets??
Visit the D&D Beyond site and you can find blank ones to print. Or write them out however you like, long as they're readable.
I've played D&D on and off for a few years but my DM and party have gone separate ways anyone got any suggestions on where to join a new group

What is metamagic
It's a sorcerer's ability to change their spells in particular ways (distance, damage, etc.). See the description in the rules for more specifics: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#Level2Metamagic
And here's the metamagic options: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/character-classes#MetamagicOptions
is tinderbox a one time use thing? is something a one time use thing only if it's stated on the description?
No it's a tool that can be used multiple times - basically it's your "strike metal to create spark" kind of thing to help start fires.
If it has limited uses, it would be noted in the description.
"You learn two cantrips of your choice from the Cleric, Druid, or Wizard spell list" so does that mean I can learn cleric, druid, or wizard spell as a sorcerer?
"Repeatable. You can take this feat more than once, but you must choose a different spell list each time." what does this mean ion get it
You pick a spell list (cleric, druid, or wizard) and select two cantrips plus a level 1 spell from that list.
Say you picked druid the first time. You could take the feat again but must choose the spell list from wizard or cleric.
Can you be more specific?
"If you consult an accurate nonfiction Book about its topic, you gain a +5 bonus to Intelligence (Arcana, History, Nature, or Religion) checks you make about that topic."
no clue what thismeans
it's the equipment u get when u choose acolyte as ur background
You tell your DM that your character wants to consult a book in the city library (and tell them about this background feature) as you try to learn more about <thing>.
Then if the DM requires a roll to learn something about <thing> you can use this to get a +5 bonus to an intelligence check using Arcana, History, or Nature skills
ohh okay
so like i just carry around a book that just give me a stat boost and doesn't have any contents inside?
More like, talk the DM about what your starting book might be about
In your roleplaying in the game you can tell the DM you'd like to read some books to gain some further information about some relevant topic your party or your character is trying to learn more about. Then if there's any dice rolls needed later in the game regarding that subject that utilizes Arcana, History, or Nature skills, because your character read that book earlier it now gains a +5 to those checks.
It's a roleplaying tool with some mechanical benefits

I am DMing for the first time, and I want the boss of my oneshot to be a sickness causing ritualist who spreads a plague. I am thinking of a Lich, but I'm afraid it will be too powerful. Should I add it anyway?
one sec, lemme look at my books
what level are you planning on having the players be at
That is still being determined, but my usual DM recommended Lv. 1 players for my first One Shot
a lich is way too much for level 1 players
I mean they would have gained levels along the way with my various encoutners
Do you have any other reccomendations for a boss?
Yeah but like, 17 levels?
I found a homebrew "Herald of rot", but I also think thats too powerful
Lich’s are EXTREMELY powerful
No, so no lich
I just started DND 2 weeks ago, so I'm still learning a lot
you could do a mummy, or an otyugh being worshipped
or a cultist of any kind
Let me look that p in the book
OK I see it
For recommendations about literal encounters to run, I'd recommend the #dm-discussion channel. While newcomers is useful for basic rules and general questions, the folks over there are much more equipped to deal with balancing encounters.

Do you know the rules first?
Aight sure then
The player portion
What sorta help do you need?
More specifically please, is there anything during the character creation process that I can help you with?
Stats
Do you have a game yet?
No
Aight then let’s assume standard array
Ok
?tag new abilities
Abilities
All creatures have six abilities that measure physical and mental characteristics: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma.
Each ability has a score from 1 to 20, which represents the magnitude of an ability. Each ability also has a modifier from -5 to +5, derived from its score. Add the modifier when you make a D20 Test with the corresponding ability or when a rule asks you to do so.
Determine your ability scores by using one of the following three methods. Your DM might prefer you to use a particular one.
- Standard Array. Use the following six scores for your abilities: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
- Random Generation. Roll four d6s and record the total of the highest three dice. Do this five more times, so you have six numbers.
- Point Cost. You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. The cost of each score is shown on the Ability Score Point Costs table. For example, a score of 14 costs 7 of your 27 points.
After assigning your ability scores, adjust them according to your background. Finally, determine your ability modifiers using the Ability Scores and Modifiers table. Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
What’s your class?
Monk
Great choice
I’d do something along the lines of 8, 15, 13, 10, 14 and 12 , maybe swapping 13 and 14
Hey guys, is there anyone that would like to start a campaign with me? I’d love to play but don’t know anyone that wants to join me
You should check out #find-a-game to get info to help you there
Or check out reddit, dnd beyond forums, and roll20
Ok I’ll have a look thank you
8STR, 15 DEX, 13 CON, 10 INT, 14 WIS and 12 CHA btw
Now, are you playing 2024 or 2014 rules?
2024
Do you have a background? (Not backstory)
Good to know
Do you know how backgrounds work, and would you like a recommendation?
I do not and yes
Backgrounds give a character additional stats, and an origin feat (think a small extra feature)
Cool
its more like skills he gained through his life, if you want you could wait after fleshing out his backstory and then make it relevant to it
do you see this? are my tips good?
What do you want this monk to be best at?
im the one u suggested me make a druid spore build
I remember ya
")
Combat
This is much closer to the 2014 version of backgrounds
Also I just realized you're also a monk
Mhm, monk main!
im saying how i create it
idk what the 2014 does
Now, I’d recommend either criminal (for Alert so you go first easier), or sailor for Tavern Brawler (your punches are better)
Ok
Oh and what’s your species btw?
Dragonborn
Noted, now which of the two seems more fitting for your character?
Or do you perhaps want to be more durable?
Criminal
K
Do you know how modifiers are calculated?
Then add the corresponding mods under your stats and you’ll be done
im getting to lost in the sauce with this barbarian character
can i make him a little resistant to cold from the jump?
Dragonborn can be resistant to cold if you chose silver or white
can i add any mechanical thing to his axes that they are infused with "true ice" which is a magical ice only the "icebron" can wield? if not then it will be just a flavor
no hes a human
then you need to wait till level 3 I think
thats... plausible?
can i be a dragon born and then flavour my apperance? he already is like 2 meters+
Only if the DM Allows the homebrew
good to know
ask your DM. flavor can make a lot of things possible but dragonborn to human is pretty drastic
why? its just apperance
you also get a breath weapon
ah
and can fly with spectral wings at level 5
i understand
not impossible, but you def. need to talk options with your DM
you could flavor it maybe as a sort of alternative draconic sorcerer thing
i just need to add that he is resitant to cold
thats it
can he not just give it to me?
Resistance is difficult to get
A DM might be willing to give it to you, but I wouldn't count on it
he doesn't have to be immume like 50% off
He could, but most people won’t give it for free
ok what do i have to give in return
That's not how this works
Three levels or a specific species
you may be also able to use the old Goliath species instead of the one from the new players handbook? they are much closer to human in appearance and abilities than dragonborn
Oh good shout, I forgot about them
If you're making practice characters, you get mechanical things by taking features (class/species/background/etc) that give you those things. You can't just add extra mechanical things that you want
Does anyone know where I can find a ga.e
but i play in the 5.5 or atleast i want to
and i think i can flavour him to have human skin and appearnce right?
you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
Ty
Flavour is free, but usually you want the mechanics to back it up. It doesn’t make too much sense for a regular human to fly for example
its insane how there is a cap to imagination
There isn’t, you just need a reason to back it up
he is an iceborn, he was born in the northest north
Sure, but does that give him flight?
i guess saying he is X doesnt help atall
Some DM might allow you make up your own mechanics but it's very much not a guarantee
no
Then make up a reason that does
i cant stay faithfull to my orginal idea if i do
That's why I recommended starting with the mechanics you wanted and then working backwards to flavor
Maybe he’s distantly related to the dragons of the north, and through claiming those special axes he awakened them
Otherwise you're going to keep having this issue
hes just a simple barbarian gng
With Cold resistance. Which isn't something human barbarians get at level 1
A simple barbarian ain’t resistant to ice
yeah, saying hes special doesnt help my case
but thats the only issue i faced
unlike my summoning monk
How did you get your monk to summon again?
i dont even freaking know, i just blindly had faith in that one guide
is "your mom slept with a dragon an insult"? there is a plot line where due to his big size they mock him saying "troll" instead
and his warpaint can be his scales or something
and his breath weapon can be him blowing ice onto his weapons to make them have the properties of "true ice" which kills anyone that isn't a true ice born (if thats too broken let it be a flavour)
what are mechanical teeth and any ideas how i can flavour them to be faithful
no listen... he will be ashamed of his dragon heritage
since i have plotlines where his god is a little evil and he gives power and inturn if you give in you become a monster
he will feel shook when he uses his breath weapon like "am i giving in?" and it would be soo cool its free depth
and he later fights a "trial of the tundra" or whatever where a magical wolf ambushes him and he decides to choke the thing as if he tries to get up and waste anytime he would lose and in it his bones break... and since dragonborn are really hard to break that would prove "his humanity" cause if he was pure blooded the wolf wouldnt be able to break his bone
im gonna take a creative nap
This all seems very much like great topics for either #homebrew or #character-discussion
im trying my best to not let it become homebrew if you could tell me why you think its that it would be cool
i didn't know there was a channel for that mb
anything that isn't rules as written is inherently Homebrew. If you are talking pure reflavor ok, but once you change how something functions, it becomes homebre
all of this is backstory, im just trying to not compromise anything and make it all releated (he is a half dragon barbarian)
idk if half dragon is a choosable race tho
I think most of your more recent questions are better for #character-discussion not new folks types of questions TBH
i understand
There is the Dragonborn race
Not exactly a newcomer but the rules revision is kinda confusing to me. I've played 5e before and am rather familiar with the system but the shift to online platforms made me gravitate towards pathfinder 2nd edition remastered instead of OneD&D. I just wonder if it's worth getting the 2024 handbooks or if I should simply stick to the original rules in case me and my group for back to 5e
how do i find a group?

whats DC?
hey guys! just made a character less than an hour ago, where do i hop in to a game

will i get banned if i mention that im not ok with certain types of people in my game?
genuienly idk
Our LFG channels only allow exclusion based on age range

Heyyyy, new player to DnD. Would love to make friends, find an adventuring group, and learn more about DnD!
I mean I built a character. And uh. That’s about as far as I’ve gotten. I wanna start to play but, I dunno what I’m doing with any of this stuff or the dnd app as well.. it’s mostly just for me to get used to the game since someone else I know wants to start a dnd thing but they dunno when they’ll get to it.

So uh, is this connected to the like, the dnd app I presume
D&DBeyond, owned by Wizards of the Coast who own D&D, is a digital toolset to help with playing D&D but is not required to play D&D.
They do have a mobile app.
But to play D&D all you need is 1 DM, 3-6 players (typically), game rules to reference (like the free rules here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024), character sheets (digital or printed) to track characters, dice (digital or physical), and a way to communicate.
And then an adventure to run
Could be home made or pre-written
I mean I get that but like how do I join ones the server has or what not is what I meant
We don't host any games here but you can look through our Looking For Game channels for possible games - the instructions on how to use those channels can be found in #find-a-game
#looking-for-dm is for where players advertise they are looking for a game
#looking-for-players is for where DM's advertise they have a game they need players
#looking-for-community is for non-standard D&D games (more than 1 DM, no set group of players, westmarches, etc.) and D&D community servers
#paid-looking-for-game is for paid D&D games
I appreciate the assistance.
where do I read up about crafting?
Here for anything that is player-facing by default:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/equipment#CraftingEquipment
And here for most magic items:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/magic-items#CraftingMagicItems
does "craft" section under the tools section mean the stuff you need to craft the tool or does that mean the stuff that comes with the tool
That's referring to items you can craft using that tool.
I'm a little frustrated, my dm had us roll for stats like usual, I rolled too high he said so he nerfed my stats, to 8 9 10 13 14 18, no problems so far I'm okay with that.
Someone else in the party had the same thing, so how he got nerfed became , 8 13 15 10 16 17, so then I was like, wait what his post nerf stats are looking like my pre nerf stats, and I wouldn't care if there was a clear logic or method
But I know he wasn't really thinking about it when he did it both times, he was just going off of "the feel"
They both happened different days so what he feels is balanced obviously isn't going to be the same, idk I just wish he had like a logic behind it, like if he was thinking they should add up to a set number, or like a point buy, but he kinda just, felt like it was too strong for me, and then with the next guy idk had a different view of what was balanced.
I really don't get what the point of making people roll for stats is, if they're just not gonna accept whatever they get. A really strange choise
Yeah, I'm sorry that happened to you.
Did you try and bring it up for discussion with the whole group?
If the DM wants balanced stats you could simply go for standard array or point buy.
Rolling for stats is gonna be inherently "unbalanced"and/or unpredictable, and can result in high or low stats, and possible large differences in player stats, so it's definitely gonna require some good DM knowledge on how to deal with that
Yeah. And I usually don't do that for campaigns, because that one roll is going to potentially impact you for weeks/months/years to come.
You usually also have some players that like it more or less than others and those will end up being the ones whose enjoyment is impacted the most.
No I don't want to, they're my coworkers so I don't wanna be "that guy" whatever that may mean, and also he's the dm and the only one with experience in DND so I can't really question him I suppose.
DnD is a social game. It's a game to have fun with your buddies. If you feel like something is taking away from your fun, then it's worth bringing up to the DM. It's the DM's job to meditate player issues, after all.
-# Though in my opinion, if your DM wants people to have randomized stats but then doesn't want people to have high stats, they shouldn't be using randomized stats to begin with.
You could also suggest that you all use one set of stats as well
Water
I don't even know that much about DnD man, but I don't think that the fear of being "that guy" justifies me not having fun when I'm playing for 4 hours man
Well it's not gonna make me not have fun it was more of a bruh moment
If you aren't having fun I'm sure they can sense it and inturn it's not gonna be fun for everyone, in situations like these prioritising yourself over what other think or whatever consequences it might bring is the best move imo
I misread the situation then mb
'Bruh' justifies at least a clarification, in my eyes.
Just really hope you don't feel any pressure from them that you would turn on yourself and downplay moment where you were uncomfortable and no one knew cause you didn't let anyone know
“Hey, I don’t mind stats being nerfed to create a better or more fair game, but can we make a point total or some other system so the nerfs are fair for everyone? Or if stats need to be standard, can we just do point buy?”
The situation makes me laugh.
Rolls dice for stats as instructed.
DM says, "no, I don't like those rolls."
Like, what?

If you feel like you've got a good handle on the Basic Rules, the next set is to find a group! You can follow the link in the bot post above to get your search started on this server.
As for programs, your DM will determine which they're using, if any. It's not usually something a player needs to worry about.
Have you tried Facebook pages, Reddit, you local library or gaming store? Have you posted what you are looking for?
I don't have social media and I don't think they are worth the effort making a whole account on said apps
I can check my local library but I'm not optimistic, and no gaming store comes to mind in my area
Then you have to be patient here. I assume you checked Mr. Google To confirm stores near ya. Heck maybe even put up a flyer in a local coffee shop that yer looking. Another option is to learn to DM and start your own group which is a great way
Expand your search. The Google Doc linked in my bio has a list of places to look!
I don't want to start DM'ing before playing as player, but your recommendations are really solid thank you
Dude it's like 144p
It's not. Plus, you don't have to try all of them!
No stores near my area no. I,d have to take like a 10 km drive
I thank you all for your help, but I'm done
Hello, what does "Face" mean in d&d? I'm reading some blogs online and they mention things like "Face skills" and "party's Face"
The party's spokesperson. Typically whoever has the biggest bonus to Persuasion.
Hellooo I joined because I had a few mutuals with the same tag
I’ve played D&D many times but I’m really not that advanced in it
But I’m excited and very interested
:)
The only age restriction, is do not put your age lol

I want to joing a group/game but I only did irl and im not very good at english yet so im kinda lost in where it will be best for me to join but i really want to 😔
in person is the way to go
find a local dnd group ideally one that free to play and takes newbie
i dont have any irl close anymore, all are in the capital or really big cities so that is out of the options sdnks
I just started really learning english like 3 months ago so i thought that maybe doing something i like could help, i like dnd but im kinda nervous about trying to do it in other language 🥀

I feel u, irl has hella perks but people are just too far away, and gd ur English looks swag.
Ooo if you like older RPGs, & don't mind some reading (The NPCs aren't fully voice acted) I highly recommend Morrowind 💖, it's awesome and fills the DND shaped void. There's alot of awesome videos on YouTube if you wanna take a look. Sorry bit of a text wall :p
I recommend you start by reading the free rules in the bot message, those should provide you with the general info
Hey I'm pretty interested in dnd is there anyway I could play online (PC) to get started?
If you've read the free rules I advise you to check out #find-a-game it has all the info about finding groups in the server.
Hey spillz I am down to play some dnd. Wanna join?
Niko I am trying to play dnd to and trying to get some people to form a group. Wanna come?
Hello im super new and wanted to try dnd, cuz it always interests me
Hey kourse I am new too but know few things. Wanna know?
You should take this to the lfg channels #find-a-game or direct messages. Soliciting for games on other channels here is against the server rules
Yes, thanks
Okay so kourse I myself is new new but I got to know there... Honestly I am looking for answers too🥺.
dang, its ok
If you've got any specific questions on how the game works, this is a good place to ask. People are happy to help
You can also check out #learn-to-play for the free rules and other useful resources
Okay we will check that out thanks for help Saragonvoid
I honestly did use dnd beyond and have made a character sheet. I heard it was good
Beyond is very handy tool for making characters, and getting the hang of it!
Beyond is really cool I just don't really like the paywalls </3
Anything that lets you access paid content for free is piracy
But all the actual rules are free, and someone in the campaign with a subscription is able to share their content for the others
I know I know
Try having a read through the first couple of sections of the Free Rules to get a grasp of the terminology, then have a go at putting a character together for practice.
You'll need to pick a class, species and background. Let us know if you have any questions!
Yeah. What ad how many species are there? What are classes? Their pros and cons and how do you make a character sheet?
I bought the player handbook for the extra info and the monsters and multiverse books on dbnd beyond so that I can create a tabaxi character
hey Red-Pe you new too?
?tag new class
Class
Your class is the primary definition of what your character can do and gives you a variety of special features, such as a fighter’s mastery of weapons and armor, and a wizard’s spells. This article provides a quick breakdown of each available class and can help guide your choice.
Each class also lets you choose a subclass, which provides unique features and further specialization within the class.
I don't understand the language you are speaking robbydoozy
Like 40+ species, 12 + 1 class
They bought extra books that give them more access to different rules, and made a humanoid cat
Thanks 2nd nugget
I am new with this whole D&D stuff as well 🙂
The website DNDbeyond is where you can see free books with rules and other info. It's also where you can create a character to use in D&D online play with others
Please just call me Nugget
Hi nugget 🙂
my character is a saber tooth tiger (idk if thats allowed so I have a backup)
Okay nugget. I meant to say what is the difference between the species and the pros and cons of it, if you have any video recommendations please suggest.
40+ official ones if you have all the books, 13 official classes with 12 in the free base rules, too many pros and cons to list for each feature
From what I understand, Tabaxi come in all cat forms so a sabertooth tabaxi should be fine
YAY
Plus flavour is free, and I like it. Nugget approves
It is not unless you homebrew (basically the dnd version of adding mods in a video game)
They still do walk upright, and have humanlike opposable thumbs but it can be a big buff tabaxi with giant fangs I guess
Or sure flavoring works too
Umm okay so I need to buy a book to play?
The basic rules and races and classes are free to play I think!
Different species have different features, including more durability, spellcasting, utility, feats and speeds (including flying and swimming speeds)
Free basic D&D rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/free-rules
I recommend reading Playing The Game and Character Creation
No books are like DLCs
sorry I probably should not be answering questions I don't know for certain 🙂 PLease anyone correct me if I'm wrong
You don't need the full set of DLCs
No no, you’re right
Okay well I will just look up on YouTube
Agreed. For example I’ve played for 2 years and own like two
I just have only played some one-shots IRL a few years ago at conventions, but never found people to play campaigns with IRL or online
You could have a look at local games stores or libraries, and trying to get friends together
Else, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
I wouldn't be on discord if I had real friends who would want to play dnd.
yeah tried that but most players in games stores are very young. It gives a bit weird vibes for an older dude to go ask kids if I can play along
So I'm trying my luck online
oh alright
Hi
Goood morning afternoon evening, Wahzzup!
helo there @velvet veldt
I'm new, also, my english is pretty bad.
I understand your english fine!
Can someone explain to me how things work around here, like, what I shouldn't do?
Don’t be rude, don’t reveal your age, don’t talk about topics in a channel not on that topic, and don’t be sad i guess
what's optimizing?
It's good that I'm not sad
Trying to draw out a character's mechanical aspects to the limit with Maths and funny wording
ohh so kind of meta building, got it
I find most funny wording isn't gonna be permitted for that matter
I mean you can. Just in #optimization .
And, what do you mean?
yeah when I created my first character on dnd beyond there were so many skills and stuff that I didn't know what it was. It took me hours looking everything up in the manual. It's all a bit overwhelming. But I guess that's natural
Tanks
I just have this character in my head and tried to pick what skills best seem to fit him
I don't really klnow yet how all those skills can be used in game yet
you're doing fine so far
To be honest, I must confess that I never played where I played
That's why I'm here
So you want to get into the game and find others to play with?
Exactly
@hearty blaze is it OK to dicuss time zones?
Yup!
But soliciting (looking fot or advertising) for games outside of the proper channels is not allowed
I want learn how to play and... Play¿? I don't know, I've only played others manual and i wanted prove dnd
Read up on the first few chapters of the free basic rules on #learn-to-play , and feel free to ask any questions you might have. Then, make a practice character and get it reviewed in #character-discussion .
Once you’re ready and got the fundamentals down, you can check out #find-a-game for information on how to find a group online. To make a post, type the appropriate command in any chat channel. There’s also DnD beyond forums, reddit or roll 20.
How long does a session usually last?
Most of the time I can only free up like 3 hours max. with a family and all..
It's all up to what the group agrees on. In my experience, 3 hours is very common.
thatnks!
Sometimes it goes for less, sometimes it goes for more. Day-long binges do happen but are fairly rare and if they involve adults above 30, are very hard to organize
yeah that was my main concern.
While I love the idea of a session starting in the afternoon going on until the late hours, it's just not feasable for my schedule
It's also a matter of focus. I often find that people get tired out / less focused after about 3-4 hours. This is especially noticeable in online games.
Thanks for everything em (I don't know how do you say, ¿People? ¿Guys?, I don't know I don't speak english in a good level sorry) bay
Everyone is very kind, thank you very much
your english doesn't need to be perfect, it is good enough to be understandable! 🎖️
Does anyone know about a game that I could start in ? taking in consideration i live in EU so we have different timezone from most part of the games i saw in here... It's my first contact with D and D and i would love to learn some more and find a game but the timezone from most part of the games dont match with mine.
I assume you've already checked #find-a-game if so, a community might get you more luck than here
Yes I did, unfortunately so far from what i check most part of the games are EST time but thanks for the advice i am gonna look futher in the communities.
I have the same issue, a starting EU player not finding any UTC/GMT groups 🙁
please keep me informed if you find anything, i will as well.
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Cast a wide net, and don't treat timezones as a deal-breaker. It doesn't matter if it's morning for you and evening for someone else as long as you're both available at the same time.
Keep in mind you don't need to find a game listed with your timezone, but a game that runs at a time you can play!
Someone's morning is someone's evening, the time itself matters more than whatever timezone the host lists
Though it can be a bit of a pain to check each time to see what time they would run for you, since not everyone uses the really handy tag which automatically translates the time to everyone's own
i dont understand the looking for community
is it like a small server of 3-8 people who need a player? or like a small DnD server that specialises in a particlur type of campaign
It's where folks post to advertise their own Discord servers and groups. The exact content may vary but will usually be indicated in the advert. It costs nothing but your time to check them out.
what does "west march" imply
Simplified, but basically it's a type of campaign with no set time or necessarily a set time, people just play when they can with whoever is available
Those games would go into the community channel because of that, since generally westmarches have a larger "pool" of people, rather than a set group, so very much a community
no, thats for sure not for me
I am very new to D&D, meaning I am really looking forward to my first game. I am very unsure how to do this, but I see a lot of campaigns posted, although it seems they are occupied?
The posts on the #looking-for-players channel are by DMs looking for players, if those are what you mean
They are likely to already have people applying, but it doesn't mean they are full unless the DM says so. On fact better DMs will not just pick first ones to post, so no harm in trying to apply!
Hi @weary pelican , looks like you're trying to advertise a game. Check out #find-a-game for the instructions to get your post raised and seen by others.
He guys do I need to buy a dice to play?
No you can use a dice app on your phone or the table might have dice you can use
Not at all! You can use bot commands to roll dice, or even go to google and type in “dice roll”, which will give you all the necessary dice options to play a game :]
Physical dice are nice, though.
Trueee
random question: what does bbeg mean?
Big bad evil guy
Usually in reference to whatever the main villain of an arc is
So you can have many bbeg a campaign
i assumed bb was big bad, couldn't figure out the last two!! thank you tons :D
Is the handbook necessary or can I just use dnd beyond?
You can use dnd beyond!
Is this for character creation? because you can find everything standard on dnd beyond for sure
Yes
Yea the freerules section of d&db is plenty! Can always pick up the book in the future if you want extra variety and more in depth stuff
Also where can I go to find a session
Thx
Hey everyone, just started with beyond
Actually just got interested with dnd after playing baldurs gate funny enough
Heyo, I just joined and I've never played DND before, I've made some characters and information to go with them but I need to fine tune and tweak stuff the way I want it, does anyone have any advice?
I need to do another playthrough of that blessed game

Hey everyone
I'm new to the game, like literally, and I have no idea how to start playing, is there like groups for new players?
I'm afraid to ruin it for people who are experienced
There are occasional games aimed specifically towards newcomers, but overall as long as the game doesn't specify any requirements of experience, it should be fine! At least no harm in asking.
As long as you know and understand the basic rules, and are actually motivated to learn, then you're fine in most groups, and aren't just gonna ruin it 😛
Great! Thank you

Welcome! The best place to start is with the free Basic Rules, linked in the bot post above. As you're giving them a read, we'll be happy to answer any specific questions you have here in this chat.
Hello, i new kinda, i get the basic like idea of it and im going to start playing a campaign with my friends in a few months but i dont really understand races and classes and im wondering if anyone could recommend one or two pairs that would be nicer for beginners?
Species has very little impact on class and vice versa. There can be some synergies but overall it’s better to go with what sounds fun to you
okay thank you!!
For classes, the martials (rogue, fighter, and barbarian) have the fewest mechanics, whereas any class with access to spells will be more complicated. That said, no class is impossible to learn; it just might take more reading.
But better to go with a class you feel excited by instead of one that you only picked because it sounded easier!
Not everyone wants to switch whenever there's a new edition or update!
The time investment to learn the differences isn't always worth it to some folks.
Some people prefer how the rules worked before they got updated, just like how some people still play DnD 3.5 edition even nowadays
I learned the new rules and there is a campaign that uses 2014 rules can they be even played?
How different are they
The rules between the two are more or less 90-95% the same. However, most of the differences are on player-facing options, so there might be some disconnect.
I own all the 2014 books, I'm not buying them again to play the same but slightly different rules 😭
But it's cooler
Also don't buy book? They are available on the website no?
The free rules are, yes, but I'm talking about stuff like books with new races (or species as theyve been changed to) and subclasses, etc.
If it's any help, here are the 2014 rules: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/basic-rules-2014
First time on DnD can someone check if the dungeon is okay? ;o (Show over call, you need voice chat)
Ragish (pugilist enthusiast!!) [JEW], Role icon, Fighter — 21:37
Hello it is my second time playing dnd can somone help me with knowing when the sesions start
That depends on your group! First you need to find a group to play with, then you schedule sessions together.
Damn I'm not gonna lie I feel kinda overwhelmed xD
I just finished fixing (or at least improving) my character some and I'm not sure whether to completely rewrite his backstory or not
You could always share it in #character-discussion and ask for feedback! If you don't have a table, a backstory with flexibility with serve you better than one where you nail down every little detail. (I would say that's good practice even if you have a table!)

Longtime IRL player trying to learn online gaming. I think im getting discord down, whats the best way to learn VTTs?
I'd look at owlbear rodeo first, as it has straightforward functionality. If you end up wanting things that owlbear doesn't offer, you can then look at some of the more complicated ones like foundry or roll20.
Thanks
You tube is probably a great place to look
im a first time dm and i stupidly gave one of my players an iron flask as a reward way too early and he convinced me that yeah, its an okay for the flask given to a level 8 to have a balor. you dont know what a balor is? dont worry about it
how do i deal with this issue i have no idea what to do lmao
from what i understand, the rules about the flask are a little vague in the DMG, but i dont want to be a jerk and just say out of nowhere "hey yeah no you cant use the item like that, even though youve already done so twice now"
my current idea is to either have it be sacrificed in exchange for something (transport to somewhere real important, lotta gold, different item, heal an ally), or have it break or something
idk if this is even the right channel lmao im just tryna figure out what to do
Honestly, this is the kind of thing where I'd recommend going to that player and flat out saying "I made a mistake"
Though if you want DM advice, #dm-discussion is usually the better spot beyond the basics
hi hi
i made my first character sheet and i’m not sure if it’s good, where can i post it to get a feel for if i did it right?
Over in #character-discussion!
Hello, so I was looking at a book that referenced 5e+ (2024), just wanted to confirm, is that the same thing as 5.5e?
Yes
5.5e, 5e+, 2024, 5e revised, all mean the same thing
Thank you
Hi everyone
Goooood morning afternoon evening, Nugget Dnd Player Helpline here, how can I help you today?
If i want to post an image of a homebrew item, is that in homebrew or another section. I know its probably obvious
Homebrew, though you can’t post images there…
Unless you use imgur I think? Idk tho
You can send a link maybe, or type out what it does
Oh ok
I just made my own homebrew character today so I’m just looking for any homebrew friendly campaigns rn, scouring the forums lol
Good luck!
I just realized that puting it in dnd arts and crafts might work
You can post images there but it’s off topic
Hey nugget can I ask you something?
Sure
Sorry to make you wait. I wanna ask that do I have to make different server to play or I can play one of the server or channels here?
This server doesn’t host games
So where can I host game?
I'm usually creating a private discord server to organize my online games.
Thanks. I am new here so it really helps
Hi. I'm sure y'all keep hearing the same question, so I apologise 😅
My family and I are looking into starting D&D.
From reading around I think we need a Player Handbook, DM Guide and Monster Manual. Is there anything else we need to be able to make a start?
A player's handbook is always good to have, but you don't necessarily need that many books just to tip your toe in.
For one thing, the free basic rules contain the important parts of the Player's Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Masters Guide:
https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024
For another, the starting sets, especially the newest one, Heroes of the Borderlands, include all the material you would need. There are maps, little standees, dice and short adventures.
Don't forget the dice!
Visit #find-a-game for everything you need to start your search, including:
- Instructions for finding a game here on the server (including how to post in our #looking-for channels).
- Suggestions for finding a game outside of this server.
- Basic advice to help you in your hunt.
No toe tipping, my nephew has wanted it for a long time now. I'm buying the whole package for him cause he's got friends to play with, but we also want to give it a try.
Oh alright, in that case yeah, the three core books are the three you mentioned.
But even still, the starter adventure would make a good first adventure to run.

How does attacking work?I'm trynna figure out ranger I've chosen hand crossbow and scimitar?
is it movement-->free-->attack-->bonus for combat?
or is free the same thing as a bonus
what you have is basically
movement
action
bonus action
reaction
with an action you can take the attack action for example and you could attack with either the scimitar or the hand crossbow.
What did I miss-
Does character creation can be anything?
I mean it needs to be D&D to be discussed here. And generally that means it’s following the game rules of D&D
Check out the 2nd chapter of the free rules to see how to create a character step by step
(Free rules are in the pinned messages here)
In DnD, character creation means picking from a list of abilities and species that are available for level 1 characters.
You can also describe a backstory and write up the personality of your character, as long as these things don't grant you any extra abilities.
Hello i was wanting to make a new build a tank paladin as that's what i always play in any game that allows me to be a paladin, the tankiest one i can find is oath of the crown, but it's locked behind Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, do i have to buy the entire adventurer's guide just to get the subclass? I know i can "homebrew" the subclass but i'm very new to dnd and idk how long it would take someone who is comepletely fresh to create a subclass like that?
All in all, any Paladin can be a big, hard-to-kill bruiser on the battlefield. No subclass is substantially better than the others in this regard.
Honestly, if you asked me, I'd probably recommend Ancients as my favorite subclass for survivability, which is from the Player's Handbook.
and do bonus actions not add the flat modifier?
That depends what you're using the Bonus Action for.
Don’t I also need to pay for that too
attack
That is a book that requires a purchase, yes.
How hard is it to just make the sub class is that a whole big thing
But the free Oath of Devotion works just great as a tanky powerhouse
That depends on what kind of attack it is. What's the feature granting you the attack using your bonus action?
If it's because you're utilizing the Light property if a weapon like Scimitar or Shortsword, then the damage of the weapon doesn't add your Ability Score Modifier.
there's a feature that grants you an attack
There's a bunch, yeah, and they all work differently.
Do you mean crossbow expert
So I can't really answer actually without knowing which one you're referring to
Damn I wish sub classes were an individual purchase
They used to be, but unfortunately DnD Beyond changed that. Now it requires a full purchase of the book.
Subclasses are some of the hardest things to homebrew for D&D and that’s not even getting into using D&DBeyonds homebrew system.
So replicating a subclass into D&DBeyond is doable but very challenging.
I can bearly find my stats while playing dnd
Work with what you've got. If you join a game with content sharing, you can update your idea then.
Then I'd honestly also say that any paladin subclass will have enough knobs to turn that you can make it your own. Remember, the mechanics are one thing, but the story those mechanics tell is completely up to you.
No need for big investments to get started.
True
I just really wanted the aura that dosnt allow them to move away and challenge duel is just a taunt
If you're building practice characters, you also don't have to do it on d&d beyond if you have access to the book somewhere else
I would argue you'll actually learn how things work better doing it almost anywhere else
My dm might I honestly don’t know I’ll have to ask him next time we’re playing
You could pick up Compelled Duel ! (link to Player's Handbook)
Any paladin can
Oh?
It's just for a single creature, but that's what a duel is, after all
Hi! I'm new here and I have no idea where to start with a D&D game (or have people to play with for that matter) I know the basics, kind of still need to brush more on things, the dice roll thing still confuses me despite having tried to understand it and I think the only way to finally get it in my brain is to play it.
that being said, I have a question, can a Dragonborn look human? Like the only way I can describe it is Maleficent, draconic features that are there (tail, horns, claws, slit eyes) but otherwise still looks human?

The usual advice is "Flavor is free." In other words, description can be whatever you want so long as it doesn't change how things work. For example, a longsword described as a katana doesn't suddenly get to swing faster or slice better.
Always check with your table, though!
I wish I had a table to discuss with, I'm table-less 🤣
still trying to find
This server is one of the many places to look, so hopefully you find something!
hopefully !
Razorwing also has a handy guide in their profile worth checking out. Here's my C&P contribution, though:
Check the listings in #looking-for-players for games that want people, read the details, respond as appropriate and cross your fingers.
Type /looking and select the option for #looking-for-dm to advertise yourself as a new player in search of a group. Be sure to include your regular availability!
There are other Discord servers where people gather for games. You can find them in #looking-for-community .
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
thanks !
Wanna talk about dice for a moment?
sure, what mostly confuses me is the math of it
like how do you calculate that ?
dunno if I said it right
Ability scores give you a modifier. This is the number, minus ten, divided by two and rounded down. Sounds like a handful, yes?
It works out like this:
8-9: -1
10-11: 0
12-13: +1
14-15: +2
16-17: +3
18-19: +4
So if I've got Dexterity 14, I add 2 to the d20 on tests of Dexterity.
You also might have proficiency in a saving throw, skill or weapon type. The bonus is listed in your class table and adds on top.
unfortunately I'm very stupid and very lost
ah no gif, but insert confused math lady here
That's okay. Do you know what ability scores are?
Write the modifier next to each of your scores.
the thing beside STR CON and WIS etc... no ?
Yeah. They describe your character's basic abilities, like how strong or clever they are.
I'm gonna throw out an example in the event it helps. Not trying to steal your thunder, Mr Smith!
Fighter A has a STR score of 14, so they add +2 to any roll involving Strength. Rogue B has a STR score of 8, making their modifier -1 to any Strength roll. You can see, then, that the Fighter with the +2 bonus will generally succeed more often than the Rogue with a -1 bonus.
Sometimes you'll need to see how well your character does with a challenge. Maybe picking a lock, or hitting a foe. You'll be asked for an ability test where you roll a twenty sided die (d20) and add the appropriate modifier.
Say you try to fast-talk your way past a guard. That'd probably be a Charisma test. You roll the d20 and add your Charisma modifier. If you get high enough, you do it!
If you haven't given the rules a read, that might be a good place to start! https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dnd/br-2024/playing-the-game#TheSixAbilities
How are we doing so far?
so-so
like I get it but am there
that explains why I have +2 under my character DEX I guess
ok yes got it, it finally clicked in place 👌
If you scroll up to the Dyno post above, there are video links available. The Handbooker Helper series can help fill in the blanks.
will do ! 🫡
Why isn’t there a separate forum for beginner DMs and beginner players who are lvl 1
Yes agreed @pale ice
Because many groups are fine playing with new to D&D folks (particularly if said new folks have spent some effort trying to learn before playing) so at which point there is little reason to specifically carve out specific LFG channels for just new players/new DMs - and that’s also more channels moderators have to monitor/moderate
I'd imagine this right here is the channel for all new player talk. Dm and pc alike. Could always make a suggestion if a suggestion channel exists. No clue if it does
And like Undying said any channel allows new players to participate
This channel is for new to D&D folks to get help with learning the core game rules and mechanics - DM and Player.
But if you want to dive deeper into character builds - #character-discussion is the best channel for that.
If you want discuss DM topics - #dm-discussion
Experience is not a requirement to participate in any of our channels
Also your character's level is separate thing from your own experience / play time. You don't play from level 1 and up with the same character in multiple games, just one at a time, so when you join a new game, your character will start at whatever level the DM sets the starting level as
i know i'm 3 hours late but lot of new DMs take their queries to #dm-discussion anyway (which is probably better)
heya, i was wondering if there was anyone highly experienced with dnd beyond and could point me in the right direction of which channel i'd need to go to for asking with help creating a custom subclass on there, i'm very new to dnd
Duuuuuudddeeeee
Funny seeing you. I'm noctis. You are nox.
Hehe
Also hello again! Wait maybe I need to go to the other chat??
i was just playing final fantasy 15 a few weeks ago lmao thats where i got the username from
Is the protagonists name nox? I think it is?
He seems like a cool dude with cool magical swords
i just changed the wordplay a bit from noctis xD
I mean it’s more like, all the lfgs feel like they’re looking for semi experienced players and I have no idea what the hell im doing.
Plus being like 37 years old kinda makes you feel a tad out of place
You could scout about for some online games, that'd be a start.
I mean is that not what the lfg area is..?
Most of those are already a few journeys deep or the times aren’t adding up
Lfg, lfp, same thing
Most DMs will gladly take a new person, just ask and be willing to learn the basics on your own (see the bot) and willing to learn. Also age doesn’t matter I have folks at my tables from 19-62 once you get in, we all just nerds at that point lol 😂

Heck new DMs like myself almost prefer new players because DMing for experience ones can be intimidating 😭
That too but hopefully experienced players are even more willing to help a new DM as DMs are a RARE breed and they will Gladly help raise a baby DM duckling into a full fledged swan
Yea I'd ilike to imagine most experienced players are patient and willing to help a new dm. Purely just my own insecurities would be the issue 😅
Aha! I misread your original post and thought you were talking about a FLGS, or friendly local game store. My bad.
Aside from here, you could also try LFG areas in sites like Reddit, Roll20 or the D&D Beyond forums to get started.
Hey I am making an obsidian vault for mine and my wife's dnd notes as they are growing. Any ideas on how to organize things? We are only players in a couple campaigns.
People, places, problems?
You asking me?
More like making a suggestion.
Yeah. Quests you go on, rumours you hear, things you learn, difficulties to resolve. Useful to have a to-do list. Make sure to date the entries though, you don't want to hike all the way back to the starting village to discover the missing dog came home on their own and there's no reward for it.
Oh! I didn't even think about a to-do list in dnd! That is a great idea. The other session our party spent like an hour trying to remember what other quests we have after finishing a really big one
Hey, I’m new to D&D in general. I really want to get into it, but it’s the age. I’m a minor but would absolutely love to get into this. But I’m not entirely sure what groups what let me if you get me. So if somebody could make talk about it that would be amazing, thank you.

Do you have friends/family interested in the game? If not, looking at local game/hobby stores, school clubs, and libraries are likely your best bet. Finding games for minors online can be tough, for obvious reasons!
Unfortunately not! I’m not the greatest at leaving the house if you know what I mean. Nobody really plays this that I know! So it’s really difficult to find something.
Have you asked people you know if they'd be willing to try it?
I've scrolled through the #find-a-game looking for DM posts and some people have been specifying their age and desire to play with other minors. As long as that's not against server rules maybe that could be an option? I'd be more comfortable if a Mod can confirm.
The bot message has the free rules and other info if you don't know about it yet. #find-a-game has a guide to finding games here, not all games have an age requirement.
I don’t really know anyone much besides family. And I know for a fact they wouldn’t because work etc. but I can TRY to find something online I guess. It’s definetly going to be hard but it might be the only way
You could also ask a teacher about starting a club at school. Some folks just need an opportunity to jump into (or reveal) a hobby.
Wait theres a lot of options to click on! Where am I looking exactly?
Unfortunately i am home learnt 😆
Also, this isn't an endorsement, but online spaces do exist for people in your situation, such as: https://www.youngdragonslayers.com/ or https://www.dndclub.games/classes
What would be the cheapest as money is a little tight at times!
DnD is as costly as you want. You can play it for free
Where would I look for free types??
On this server, you can post an ad yourself in #looking-for-dm (follow the instructions in #find-a-game) or reply to the ads that interest you in #looking-for-players!
What if they don’t add what age requirements there are?
Sorry for causing all this hassle being on the younger side
You can ask! D&D relies on communication, so practice putting those skills to use!
It’s hard to get answers without questions. That’s the purpose of this channel :D
Also, I’m doing a looking for DM and what service do I choose? There’s community, paid, or other services? I’m looking for the free ones!
Say NO to those. Filling out the rest of the form is enough for your purposes!
Kay. What do I say for the game style?
I don't think you've played before, right? I think as best you can just describe the sort of game you want to play in.
Like the type of adventure?
Like, do you want tactical combat or smash and crash in a dungeon, big problems and bigger heroes or character-driven plotlines with some nuance, that kind of thing.
can i ask a mod to let me post another post in "looking for dm"
Not super likely, but it's not unknown. What's wrong with your first post?
Hello
i cant find it
i searched with my own @ and nothing popped up
if you could find it fine
What day was it posted?
Im new to dnd, am interested
5 ago? it says ill be able to post again on 28
i think the move here is to look up DnD beyond and read the rules
and maybe create a character

So that's why im here I am interested juts..
Nah, you're on there.

1 reply is underwhelming? what's wrong with my post?
K
Your post doesnt inherently have to have something wrong with it. But theres a lot more players then there are dm's so finding a dm like that can be challanging
Felt like I’ve done the thing wrong, but we will see!
Take a look at other posts there youll see they have similar engagement levels. Alternativly you can browse #looking-for-players yourself and find a group like that
and also when i look in the DM looking for players channel its filled with either
starting high level
weird, like very weird setup
or people i dont think ill enjoy the game with
like there is this way of playing where its openended?
Finding a group is probably the most frustrating part of the dnd experience. Its an unfortunate effect of the game
Open ended?
you "a random" dude can just take action for a character
where the whole server is in on the campaign
he called "asynchomius"
So you (and anyone else)just play any character instead of 1 player 1 character?
I think I messed up in my looking for game honestly
Freeform roleplay, chat room RP. Not really the best for the D&D experience. But yes, play by text or play by post games exist, they are a thing.
Yeah, you did.
|| The clocks change this weekend and it'll be BST not GMT! ||
You’re from my time zone?
I kid - I mean, I'm right, but your post is fine.
People are gonna think, what is this guy on about..
It's pretty clear. Don't worry about it.
Only thing is, they wouldn’t know about my age if you knew what I was talking about earlier
Hello
did u use the past tense of kidding?
Hi
Um can i seek advice on my charachter on this channel??
Its the first character i make and im confused about some stuff
#character-discussion is much better trust me
Even as a new player people will help you better in that channel
character discussion is for if you already understand the game, which they may not
Oh ok thanks
Oh maybe I'm wrong then and this is the channel. Nvm go ahead and ask friendo!
So like i dont get the part of the personality traits and bonds and allat
Do i have to copy them from the book or do i make my own??
Those are suggestions, so you're free to make up your own.
Oh yea nvm that's definitely a this channel question 😅. But like deva said it's whatever you want!
Ok thanks 👍
Also can i create my own weapons? Or those have to be from the book?
To start its best to stay with the books. Homebrewing and retaining balance is VERY difficult even for seasoned veterans. Also MANY DM's either won't allow it unless they helped make it at best, if at all.
Thanks! I mostly asked because a friend wanted to create his own magical sword with its own rules and i wasnt supe if thats even a thing
Hes a sorcerer btw
Also its okay if in my group we're only 3 players and a DM? Cuz im not sure if i can include someone else
3-4 players with a DM is pretty normal and a good amount
More than 5 and it can get.. hectic, I say, as someone who had been part of a group with 7+min people.. Shudders Never again
I want to get into dnd but idk where to start. The game seems pretty fun especially with homebrew stuff but is there like a guidebook or anything?

the bot has some GREAT basics. There are tons of sourcebooks to enhance the game for sure. It can be played (although in limited capacity) for absolutely free
Thanks man!😁
Also im kinda worried about how my character is a sorcerer but also one of my friend's
And i dont want it to get boring or sum
My other friend is a ranger but i think hes changing because it doesnt use bows lol
just like the real world there are people of the same profession but are two toally different folks, so they get along and have fun. now a whole group of them may make it difficult for both players and DM to keep the game balanced. it is not critical to have a balanced party but it is a good idea if it sort of is at the least
Rangers absolutely can use bows, probably the most famous for it. but a range weapon user and two spell slingers who stay at range will be tough to be honest
As long as you pick a different subclass, no harm in having multiple of the same classes. You can play them completely differently and focus on different spells
And yeah, rangers definitely use bows? They can be melee or ranged but they aren't forced into one or the other unless you choose to
Oh sorry i thought they didnt ig i got confused. Thanks tho
Hello
Howdy, let us know if you have questions
Does anyone want to know about the character i made today that's called Galeem?
folks in #character-discussion would love to. This channel is mostly for new folks to ask basic questions. I am Glad you are excite about your character!!!!
Is ryokos guide to the yokai realms widely accepted and used? Or do most games not allow it
It's 3rd party so it's really going to be up to the DM and table
Whats the best way to start? I always wanted to dip my toes into a actual game but all the rules and veteran friends make it seeem quite overwhelming to start
I want to know it too

Is it ok to start dnd with homebrew?
Lots of people do! I personally recommend at the very least running a beginner friendly module or starter kit and just changing the words or visual description to match your homebrew world. But not like you'd be the first or last to start with a completely homebrew setting and adventure.
I ran a starter kit which had a cave system and I just homebrewed over the individual caves as these space and time warped locations to match my PCs back stories. (Ie one setting in a pokemon world) but it was still just the starter kit underneath
Thanks man! Also is it ok if I start off with a homebrew or custom class?
Oh now that is actually much more difficult hurdle. If you're a DM then you might be setting yourself up for failure. If you're a pc you'll like not find a DM who is willing to take homebrew class/subclass. I'd definitely stick with core and/or official 3rd party classes for now
I personally don't recommend that at all when brand new, unless it's an experienced DM who made it to begin with, but it's way better to learn the base mechanics and base stuff before delving into custom things like that
In addition it's best to not make a character until you know what world your dm has for you. You want you character to make sense in their world
Custom races and classes just have the potential to be waaaay too unbalanced and usually lean into overpowered territory, so most DMs won't allow either
Uhm it might sound obvious but can normal blades or swords damage dragonborns?? Its for my character background
Yes, they can hurt then just fine
